A (slightly angsty) domestic zukka hc I’ve been thinking abt a lot: I think Zuko would have a sort of knee-jerk flinching reaction when anybody touches his scar (with katara he looks like he’s bracing himself and with mai his whole upper body is sort of being held in place by her) (which i definitely think mai did on purpose to make him feel more comfortable but anyways) I think Sokka would after the first time figure out Zuko flinches hard even when he sees it coming and he’s The Plan Guy so I think he would secretly experiment and find out Zuko doesn’t flinch when sokka drags his hand from a different part of him (like his hair) onto his face. So he just starts doing that and it takes Zuko a stupid long amount of time to realize “hey Sokka touches my face a lot and it doesn’t suck. I wonder why🤨” until one day he figures it out like Sokka you sneaky shit you were nice to me and I didn’t notice

Bc the whole “zuko lets Sokka touch his scar bc he trusts him and he’s super normal abt it” is nice but it doesn’t feel realistic? You can trust someone a whole lot and still have instinctive trauma reactions. I think it’s much sweeter if Sokka notices and figures out a way to make it better without being asked.

Consider the following: potty UNtraining. training your little to let go in their diapee because it's healthier than holding it in and having an accident later. giving your little stickers and rewards for every time they use their diaper instead of the potty. encouraged wettings. peeing your diaper because it's more efficient than the potty. just imagine

littles who have been thoroughly potty trained, so much so that they simply can't use their diaper without a lot of concentrated effort... but they really want to wear them and use them

they're just so anxious about it! how whether or not their padding will absorb everything right, if there'll be any leaks, if they should get into a certain position, if they, as an adult, could/should even be wearing a diaper....

but it's okay because their caregiver is there to help ease these worries and make using their diaper something to be celebrated!!! there's praise, there's rewards, there's encouragement!

and, whenever the little tries to come up with an excuse about why they should probably be using the potty instead, it's hard to argue when their caregiver is able to give them a good reason that a diaper is actually the best choice, from explanations like:

"I just cleaned the toilet and it'll be a shame to dirty it so soon"

"we're low on toilet paper, and I don't want to have to go to the store yet"

"it'll be a long drive home, you'll hurt your bladder and risk a UTI if you don't use your diaper"

"you're too little to use the potty all by yourself, and I just started making dinner, so you'd have to wait until after dinner, because we don't want the food to get cold, do we?"

"I can't pause the movie, it'll ruin the pacing; using your diaper will preserve artistic integrity"

"babies use their diaper, and you're my baby :) "

soon enough, the little will be able to relax and will slowly start using their diaper with more and more ease, until one day, likely while they're watching tv, they're about to get up when they realize: their diaper is wet and they didn't even notice when it happened!!!! their caregiver will be so proud of them and all the hard work they put in to get there!!!!!!!

Took the bus to the big city yesterday and it only stops near where I live in the early morning and late at night, so I left a bowl for Pandolf with enough food for his 2 meals of the day. He didn’t start eating because it was too early for breakfast and he’s punctilious about mealtimes, but I told him “Bon appétit” to Authorise The Kibble, then left. When I came home at night it was long past his normal dinner time yet I found the bowl half-full—he had eaten the breakfast portion but since he only got 1 bon appétit he didn’t dare to eat the rest for dinner. I don’t think if I had said it twice in a row he would have understood that one of them was a Bon Appétit voucher for his next meal unfortunately. But I’m always amazed by his scruples, he is the most principled animal I know. When he was a puppy he would try to stick his head in his bowl while I poured the food so I taught him to wait until he heard ‘bon appétit’ before going anywhere near it—and very quickly in his mind the words became an incantation that turns the contents of his bowl from a miasma of forbidden unthinkableness into edible food that belongs to him.

He knows how to get you to sleep. You know all the signs too, but when his nails scratch through your scalp, it's too late. They're blunt and the pads of his fingers are rough as they smooth over your hair. You make a content sound and feel the mattress move as he sits up and kisses your forehead. "Shh, baby." And had it been an earlier hour while you were fully awake, you would have made an offended scoff and told him do not tell me to shush, but it's so different when you're tired and one of his hands i softly tracing along your side. He temporarily breaks off his shushing to kiss your forehead again

and then your cheek and then your jaw and then again on your forehead.

You're passed out by the time he gets up. He's experienced at it now, makes sure not to wake you up. He knows it's tough to watch him leave, so he doesn't let you. And he knows you want to stay up for him, but you'll never be able to resist cuddling him even if you know what it means. He makes sure to tuck the covers snug around you. The bedroom always seems to be freezing no matter what you put the thermostat at, but who would complain when that just means more cuddling?

He silently bends down and grabs the red stuffed bat he bought you from under the bed. He moves it so it seems like you're cuddling the small plush of the insignia he wears on his chest. He bends down and kisses your forehead one more time because he just can't help it. As quietly as he can, he whispers "I love you. Sleep tight." He quietly laughs to himself about the joke you might have made had you been awake.

He's out of the door window without a sound.
