It’s hot out. And with the dog days of summer stretching on, there are fewer and fewer reasons not to book a vacation—particularly since hotels mean access to air conditioning and pools. Let’s be honest: When it comes to cooling down, almost any body of water will do. But if you’re looking to make your next swim an epic occasion, we’ve gathered a selection of hotel pools from around the world that go the extra mile.

The Kona Pool at Hilton Waikoloa Village: an appreciation.
I’m pretty lucky in that I’ve been able to swim in a number of pools over the last few years in my travels, and the Kona Pool at Hilton Waikoloa Village easily slots in my all-time top three. This is one of the most well-designed pools for a resort of this size; not only is it absolutely huge, but there are a lot of features throughout that encourage people to spread out, so if you’re trying to do laps or you’re splashing around, it’s pretty easy to stay out of people’s way.
Like most resorts, there are not enough chairs for everyone at the same time, but they will put up signs that say that if you leave your things unattended for an hour, they reserve the right to move them out of the way, though I never saw anything moved personally. (I’m sure that’s only for when the chairs are all completely taken and people are starting to complain.)
But yes--this was definitely a wonderful swimming experience, and I’m glad I got two epic swims in here because they felt amazing.
I also liked how they handled the kiddie pool: lined with coarse sand, it was a fun place for little kids to enjoy the water but there was a stone wall separating it from the main pool. I think this also greatly contributed to my overall enjoyment.
