candor: [laughing] honestly quite normal! it’s a blessing and a curse, really, not having my identity revealed. i get to live my life without those pressures, but i don’t get to see anyone and thank them for reading!

interviewer: do you ever get the urge to approach someone reading one of your books?

candor: all the time! whenever i go browsing in book stores and see someone looking at or buying mine, i have such a temptation to scream THANK YOU at them!

candor: maybe! there are a few of my fans who know who i am, those who attend the secret events and signings, but i’m very lucky that they all respect my privacy and haven’t shared anything further. perhaps one day soon i’ll finally let everyone in on the secret.

candor: oh! i’m assuming you mean lando norris? yes! he’s a pretty good friend of mine, he’s been a big support over the last few years and we found some time in our schedules last week to meet up.

after getting an earful from you (and a certain british driver) it finally sinks in for charles how much he's been neglecting your happiness and he starts to see how much mick truly means to you

word count: 2.8k warnings: none except lil bit of asshole charles still

When Charles met up with Lando and Carlos for a late lunch, there was no way he could ignore their looks of disapproval. Lando even had sunglasses on and Charles could see the judgement through the dark lenses before he could sit down.

Charles could see the shift in dynamic as well. Lando and Carlos were friends, but they way they both sat on the same side of the table, leaving the other side empty for himself made this whole meal feel like an intervention. Maybe that was their plan, they wanted to talk some sense into the Ferrari driver.

“Do not say anything,” Charles groaned, slumping in the chair. Not like they would listen to his request anyway. He glanced over the menu but nothing seemed the least bit appetising. Last night's drinks were still sitting in his system and he was worried one bite from a fruit platter would cause everything to come up.

But the alcohol wasn’t the only reason why he felt sick.

Just seeing his sister’s face when the elevator doors opened told Charles that he royally fucked up.

“Was the Instagram story apology your idea or the PR teams?” Lando asked, reaching for his water. Carlos scoffed, but Lando continued on calling their friend out on his mistakes. “You realise that’s probably the worst way to apologise, right? You’re a laughing stock all over social media right now.”

“I didn’t know what else to do,” Charles admitted, waving his hand at the server when he came by to take his order. He couldn’t eat anything.

Carlos leaned forward. With the most serious, dead panned look on his face, he looked directly into the eye of his teammate, “Has it ever crossed your mind to give Mick a chance?”

Charles glared at the Spaniard, “Mick isn’t the problem. She shouldn’t be dating any driver, period.”

“What about me?” Lando teased, only to be met with a similar death glare that had Lando sinking back into his seat. Charles could be intimidating when he wanted to.

“Mate, Mick is a good guy,” Carlos defended the German driver as he had done so many times before. “Your problem with him comes from your own insecurities.”

Charles grimaced, “My insecurities? I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Camille?” Carlos brought up his last girlfriend, but didn’t stop there. “Colette? Who am I missing?” He looked at Lando.

“Mélanie,” Lando added, another ex. “You’ve got a bit of a track record, Charles. It was your own mistakes that ended those relationships and now you think every driver on the grid is as bad as you are.”

Was he really being scolded by a 23-year old gamer who’s most meaningful relationship was the one he had with his golf clubs?

“Most of them are,” Charles retorted. He knew first hand what majority of the drivers got up to after a race weekend. Infidelity, the partying and the lies that followed. Some of the guys were in serious relationships, more serious than his ever were, but that still didn’t stop them from making bad decisions.

“Mick’s not one of them,” Lando told him and Carlos nodded in agreement. “He’s not going to hurt your sister and if he does then he has 20 of us to answer to.”

Charles laughed at the idea of Lando trying to be threatening. That man couldn’t hurt a fly.

When Carlos excused himself to answer a phone call, Charles was really hoping that they could drop the conversation. He aimlessly picked up the menu again, not like he was going to order anything, but he only managed to scan about half of it before Lando threw a crumpled up napkin at him.

“What?” Charles spoke through clenched teeth. “I fucked up, I know.”

Lando took his sunglasses off, resting them on the surface of the table. There were no dark bags under his eyes, he probably had a great sleep last night. Lando was one of the few that didn’t wake up in the mornings wondering what sort of damage control he’d have to do to make up for the night before.

“Y/N has been nothing but supportive of you and your career,” Lando told him, as if Charles wasn’t already of that. “She’s a damn good sister to you and you can’t be arsed to show her and Mick half the respect that they give you. She’s family, Charles, but try hard enough and you will push her away. Put your own stubbornness aside for once and see how much Mick means to her, how happy he makes her. You're one of my best mates, so I say this with kindness, but you're honestly acting like a dickhead. You're not a child. She's not a child. She's in a relationship with someone who clearly loves her. Don't get in the way of that and for Christ's sakes, give Mick a break already. He's a good guy, you're not."

This was not the first time Charles had any heard this, but this was the first time he had all of it all at once from one of his closest friends. And after the events of this morning, it was sinking in deeper than it ever had before.

Charles opened his mouth, to argue of course, he didn’t like to be put in his place or told when he was wrong, but maybe it was for the best when his phone started to ring. He held his finger up to Lando and leaned back in his chair, answering immediately when he saw your name on the screen.

He barely got a word out when you started swearing at him, both in French and English. Charles couldn’t keep up with how fast you were talking but he got the main idea. That Instagram story apology did shit all to help make anything better.

Charles hated being yelled at though, so the more you raised your voice at him and told him how much of an ass he was, the more defensive he got, even when he knew he was the one in the wrong.

“A fucking Instagram story apology?” Your voice was so loud that even Lando could pick up on your words.

“What else do you want me to do?” Charles yelled back and across the table, Lando laughed.

“Be a better brother,” Lando suggested and Charles just flipped him off.

You scoffed into the receiver, “I want you to not lie on social media and put a fucking effort into getting along with Mick! Give me one good reason why you don’t approve of me dating him,”

Carlos had come back at that exact second and raised his eyebrows towards Lando who simply mouthed your name. Carlos hummed and sat down, watching the rest of this disaster of a show play out in front of him like it was a blockbuster film.

Charles had about ten reasons in the forefront of his mind as to why you shouldn’t be dating Mick, but for the life of him, he couldn’t get them out.

“You can’t,” you pointed out.

Charles rolled his eyes, not like you could see it, “He’s older than you.” Both Lando and Carlos groaned at that piss poor excuse.

“By two years.”

“He doesn’t have a career.”

“Harsh, mate,” Lando blurted out. Charles gave him a look, telling him to stop putting his two cents into his conversation.

“Maybe he’s not currently driving but that doesn't mean he’s done for good.”

“He can’t support you,” Charles said.

“I can support myself.”

Eventually, Charles just came out with it, “You shouldn’t be dating a driver, Y/N, okay?”

And it was really his own fault for using that excuse. The second those words left his mouth, you hit him right where you knew it would hurt.

“Just because you were a shitty boyfriend to your ex-girlfriends doesn’t mean Mick is going to treat me poorly too.”

Charles had never told you what happened in his last relationships, but it didn’t take a genius to figure it out. People gossiped. Rumours spread around the paddock and Charles knew damn well that a handful of drivers weren’t good at keeping their mouths shut.

“What is she saying?” Lando asked, more invested in this conversation than he had a right to be. Charles leaned away from the two of them, but it didn’t give him any more privacy.

“Charles, I don’t know what happened in your relationships,” he could hear the hesitancy in your tone, “but whatever fear you have, whatever you did…Mick isn’t the same guy. He’s not you, he’s-”

“Better,” Charles finished your sentence. Mick was better than he was. Mick was a good guy. He would give you the world world if you asked for it.

You laughed into the phone, agreeing that Mick in fact was a better person than Charles would ever be. “I mean, yeah. And I get it, you want to protect me but this isn’t how you go about it. You’ve just been cruel and closed off and you haven’t even tried to see Mick for the guy he is. Do you even know how happy he makes me?”

And what could Charles say to that?

He wasn’t blind, he saw how much of an impact Mick made on your life. For whatever reason that he still couldn’t wrap his head around, Mick meant the world to you. Charles told himself that it wouldn’t last and that you would eventually move on, but that still had yet to happen. Maybe it never would.

“I love him,” you said quietly, voice broken like it was your final attempt at getting through to Charles.

And again, what could Charles say to that?

This wasn’t a conversation he could have on the phone.

He abruptly hung up and slid his phone into his pocket, ignoring the confused stares from the other two drivers. Charles pushed the chair away from the table and stood up, not bothering with an explanation as he hurried to rush back to the hotel.

Charles packed up what he could in a frenzy, texting his assistant and asking them to grab anything he might have missed. His priority wasn’t making sure he had everything with him, it was getting to Monaco where he knew you were. Where else would you have gone? With that race coming up, it only made sense that you would go home early.

So a few coffees and five hours later, Charles found himself outside of your apartment building. He typed your code into the keypad to gain access and then next thing he knew, he was in front of your door.

It took nearly a minute for him to actually knock. He had no idea if you would listen to him, or even let him in. He thought about turning around and just heading back to his own place. Sending a text to meet up later might have been smarter, he’d have more time to think about what the hell he was going to say.

But no, he was already there. He had to talk to you. He needed to make things right.

When you opened the door and saw Charles, you had no idea what to think. It didn’t help that he still didn’t say anything. He drove this whole way and yet he couldn’t form a single coherent sentence. You were still waiting for a sincere apology.

“Y/N did you want Mozza or did you want to try that new sushi place?” Mick walked out of your office, focused on his phone that he didn’t even see Charles until he looked up to find out why you weren’t answering.

Charles cleared his throat, “Hi.”

Mick nodded firmly, glancing your way to get your read on the situation. He could tell right away that you didn’t invite him over. He could also tell that you didn’t know what to do and Mick being Mick needed to steer this in the right direction.

“Well don’t just stand there, come in,” Mick offered, putting his hand on your back to usher you to the side so you weren’t blocking the doorway. His touch sort of snapped you out of your own thoughts and you nodded in agreement, watching as your brother entered your flat.

This was awkward for everyone. This strange tension lingered in the air. You were mad at Charles. Charles wasn’t a fan of Mick. Mick was stuck in the middle because he loved you but he didn’t want to overstep and do anything that would really set Charles off.

“I thought you weren’t coming back until tomorrow,” you said, crossing your arms over your chest. You leaned against the edge of your kitchen table and watched as Charles shifted uncomfortably until choosing to lean against the wall behind him. He was out of his element here, especially with Mick at your side.

“Change of plans,” he said, his eyes landing on the way Mick still hadn’t removed his hand from your back. The way you leaned into his side didn’t go unnoticed.

“I find it hard to believe you drove home early just to stop by and say hi,” the bitterness in your tone caused Charles to tense up. You didn’t want to fight, truly, but you were still annoyed with his actions.

Mick’s fingers brushed against the material of your top and you inhaled a deep breath.

“Charles, you’re family and I love you, but-”

“I’m sorry,” he blurted out, interrupting you halfway through your sentence. Your eyes widened, not out of shock but because you were waiting to see if more followed. “Really, I am. I’m sorry for how I’ve treated Mick since the two of you have started seeing each other.”

This apology wasn’t for you. You just shrugged your shoulders and nodded your head towards your boyfriend, “Don’t tell me that. Tell him.”

Mick straightened up and you could see it in Charles’ face that he really didn’t want to have to repeat himself.

“Mick I’m-” Charles paused, glancing at you but you were staying out of this. He needed to apologise to Mick first and then the two of you could work out your issues. Charles sighed, “Mick I’m sorry, mate. I know you’re a good guy and I know you’ll treat Y/N right. I just can’t help but have my guards up for her. I know what some of the guys on the grid have done and I’ve seen-” he hesitated when you raised an accusatory eyebrow. “It’s not easy for drivers to be in relationships and I just don’t want to see Y/N getting hurt.”

“I would never hurt her,” Mick assured him, sliding his hand further around your waist. His fingers rested on your side as he pulled you against him and gave you a gentle squeeze. "Charles, I love your sister. She's my entire world, she means everything to me."

“I know that now,” Charles said, but you were still having trouble believing his words.

“Do you?” You asked, quite bluntly “Because I’ve been saying this for months and suddenly, out of the blue, you’ve come to your senses? That doesn’t make any sense.”

“Honestly you can thank Lando,” he admitted. “He reminded me how supportive you’ve been of me my entire life. You’ve stuck by my side through everything. Every win, every loss- both off and on the track and I haven’t done the same.”

“Nope,” you agreed. “You haven’t.”

“I’m sorry,” Charles finally directed the apology to you. His green eyes were filled with sorrow and guilt and for the first time there seemed to be actual strength and meaning behind those two words. “I’m so sorry, Y/N. I haven’t been a good brother.”

“You’ve been the worst.”

“I know.”

“You never even tried to get to know Mick off the track.”

“I know.”

“You’re always so caught up in your own world.”

“I know.”

“You don’t even-”

“Y/N,” it was Mick’s turn to cut you off. He looked between you and Charles. Whatever you were going to say, Charles would just keep agreeing. This could go on for hours if you all let it, but Mick stepped in. “I think we should just all agree to move past this.”

You nodded, but when you looked at your brother, you were still hesitant. How did you know he wasn’t just saying what you wanted to hear?

“I need to see more of an effort from you,” you declared. “I’m not saying you two have to be the best of friends but for the love of God, Charles, don’t be an ass anymore.”

“That sounds fair,” Charles said as Mick dipped his head and chuckled.

You expected Mick to be the one to extend the first olive branch, but it was Charles who stepped forward and held out his hand. Mick, who had been waiting for this since you started dating, happily stepped away from you to shake your brother's hand, only to pull him into that sort-of half embrace that men were notorious for.

“I know it doesn’t need to be said- or maybe I should have said it a long time ago," Charles started off as they pulled away, keeping one hand on his arm, “But welcome to the family, Mick."

Things weren't perfect after that, not at first at least. It took a bit of time, but eventually, Charles truly did see Mick as part of the family.

After seeing @josefavomjaaga’s and @northernmariette’s marshal calendar, I wanted to do a similar thing for all the marshal’s children! So I did! I hope you like it. c: I listed them in more or less chronological order but categorised them in years (especially because we don‘t know all their birthdays). At the end of this post you are going to find remarks about some of the marshals because not every child is listed! ^^“ To the question about the sources: I mostly googled it and searched their dates in Wikipedia, ahaha. Nevertheless, I also found this website. However, I would be careful with it. We are talking about history and different sources can have different dates. I am always open for corrections. a) Thomas “Hater’ Astruc still helping to write the show, even though he said he was quitting after S5? I KNEW it was too good to be true, but at least this explains the diabolical Chloe ‘Hope Spot’ above. God forbid there be any wealthy teenage blondes in his upcoming reboot of Astroboy...

b) Let me guess... The episode ends with Chloe humiliated (again) Audrey shouting at Chloe for perceived failures in letting down the family name (even though the defeat will be all Audrey’s fault) and Andre with Zoe waltzing off into the sunset together to become a World Famous Director/Actor duo, with all the Karmic Jackpot from the writers you can possess for the pure attribute of disliking Chloe.

c) Of course, all these ‘leaks’ could be complete nonsense invented by some imaginative geek with WAY too much time on their hands, and I reserve the right to delete this post at any time if/when this turns out to be the case to preserve my own reputation/ego/sanity. (My main reason for skepticism? In the above episode, Chat has his moment in the limelight instead of giving Ladybug all the glory and demoting him to ‘flirtatious goofball’ when they’re apparently ‘equals’. Yeah, right.)

I mean, if you read the rest of the plot descriptions, it DOES sort of read like bad fanfiction... but then I think of what S5 is basically like... and I reckon, ‘there might be something to this’. Headcanons regarding the Ghosts™

(Thank you anon for the idea. I hope you wanted something like this. I had so much fun writing this.)

One

Four wasn't lying when he told, that One loves his Beaver show. He watches it all the time. During eating, he sometimes almost chokes on the food from laughing so hard - this usually earns him a disapproving glare from Five, and raised eyebrows from the others.

One loves to pamper Wally, the dog. Once he gave the dog some bacon, and it caused for poor Wally an upset stomach. Ever since then, One always checks on the internet what kind of treats can he give to his pet.

Occasionally he has nightmares about the bombing in Turgistan, those days he quieter than usual.

One is not fond of the whole 'family' thing or being the Cleavers. Yet, when the others are having a meal together he usually eats with them, - of course sitting at the back, but it's enough for him to hear the chatter, he rarely takes part in the conversation.

Two

She is quiet most of the time but joins the banter with the others.

Two regularly tells of Three for being stupid (for example when he eats too many unhealthy foods).

She is not a big fan of PDA (public demonstration of affection). However, she sometimes holds hand with Three. (Or a gentle touch here and there, or silly whispered sweet nothings into each other ears).

Most of the time Two and Five are the adult ones in everyday situations (#girlpower).

Three

Three loves to learn languages, so whenever it's his turn to do the grocery shopping, he stops to buy himself some language books.

He practices target shooting and has his own little secret shooting range, but unfortunately, he is not allowed to shoot without gun silencer.

He often practices hand-to-hand combat. When his sparring partner is Two, it usually becomes sexy time.

He always brings a large bouquet, when he visits his mother.

Four

Four is a restless, energetic person. Since there's nothing to do in an abandoned plane cemetery besides climbing the planes (been there done that), he got himself a skateboard. He spends a lot of his time learning new tricks. (don't tell a soul, but learning the Ollie, in the beginning, took embarrassingly long for him).

He says that wearing protective gear restricts his movement during skateboarding. When he leaves without his helmet and pads, One shouts after him, to wear them.

He loves to hang out with the others and frequently sits with One, while he watches his Beaver show. However, he usually fell asleep during the first five minutes (but hey, Four is someone who values his beauty sleep).

Being a thief is a lifestyle, and it is really hard to get away from bad habits. He sometimes pickpockets the people on the street. Whenever Seven is with him, the older man slaps him on the back of the head and sends him a disapproving glare, which leads to Four giving back the items. 'Sorry, sir. It seems you dropped your wallet *innocent smile*'.

Five

She is a doctor, which means she is a collected, tidy person. (She was called 'Clean freak' by Six several times). She usually cleans up after the others, but when she loses her temper, everyone should find shelter, because she tends to go atomic.

She washes the dishes after dining together because she can't stand the idea of rotten food. Also, Two sometimes helps her, and Five feels like Two is the only other sane person in the squad. Then the blond murders someone, or take out someone's eye with a knife, and Five feels like she is alone in the sanity team.

As the (probably) only medically trained person on the team, she takes care of the medical issues. No matter how ridiculous it is. " Three, how did you dislocated your shoulder?" And her eyes widen when the reply comes "Two thrown me on the ground to hard."

She and Four hangs out often and they talk a lot about everything. When Six was alive, he would take part in the conversation too. Now she wants to strengthen her stamina so, she takes climbing lessons from Four.

Six

Six was a big coffee enthusiast. He always insisted to stop for a coffee. He especially loved Moccacino.

His favourite band was Spice Girls, and he knew every single lyric of their songs. It was long overdue for One to snap and throw out the radio from the car in Florence.

He loved expensive sports cars and ended up looking for the right one for a long time. (And then he ended up with a green one, 'cause why not?) Also, he tried to teach Four how to drive, but that was a lost cause.

He was childishly naive, and innocent sometimes, so he was the only person, in whose presence Two and Three could openly flirt without getting caught. And he needed to be explained at least twice to understand the dirty jokes.

Seven

Seven is getting used to the Squad. It's going alright. He kind of challenges One's leadership, and that pisses the millionaire off. Once Seven and One bet if the ex-military man can do a full baller roll with the jet. Conclusion, Three won't eat just before getting on a plane ever again.

He has an ongoing prank war with Four after he once woke up to Wally licking his mouth because Four put some peanut butter on his face. The younger boy doesn't know what's coming in his way - Seven bought some pink hair dye and poured it into Four's shampoo. Seven is not a man who is willing to show mercy.

He and Three have a target shooting competition. So far, Seven is winning. He also tries to teach Five how to hold a gun correctly and use it effectively, but the girl is not happy with the thought of hold a killing machine.

He had trouble with the main rule and used to visit his family and friends, watching them from a distance. He stopped this habit when Four once caught him, sneaking off. When he told the blond where he was going, the younger man was looking sad, and Seven immediately remembered, how Four told him, that only a few people attended his funeral. Out of compassion for the other boy, he stopped visiting his real family. Ever since then, he tries to spend time with his new family whenever he feels a longing for his old.

[In celebration of Disneyland Paris’ 2020 re-opening on the 15th of July...!]

And hoping that things will get back to normal as soon as possible!! I know that in WDW it has been already announced that Mickey’s Not-so-Scary Halloween Party (easily one of the best things I’ve experienced in any of the parks) won’t happen this year and it made me very sad even if I couldn’t have been able to attend... since, you know, I live on the other side of the planet XD. But I do enjoy watching videos of it and it is one of the rare occasions in which we HM/PM fans get to see some of our favorite characters portrayed by live actors :< so it is a loss for everyone.

The same thing can be said for Disneyland Paris Halloween/Harvest Celebration Parade that in 2018 introduced the new and improved costumes for Mélanie and Henry Ravenswood, the two main protagonists of DLP’s Haunted Mansion, a much darker and plot-driven ride known as Phantom Manor. But hey, if you’re here in my blog you probably already know this :P I’m just providing info for those not in the know!

Accompanying the two characters during the parade -and show stop- there’s also a quite large group of dancers playing the Waltzing Dead (just like in the Boo to You parade, but with outfits that match the Wild West setting of the ride) from the attraction and a bunch of skeletal scoundrels always up to some mischief.

So, yeah... fingers crossed and let’s hope we’ll get to see Henry and the boyz and Mél and the gurls this year!

AAS NOVA Mind the Gap! Investigating a Potential Cause of the Exoplanet Radius Valley Neptunes and Jupiters and Earths, Oh My! Extrasolar planets, or exoplanets, have been theorized for centuries, and studied firsthand since the 1990s. Much of the common classification of exoplanets is based on analogs in our own solar system: hot Jupiters, super-Earths, and super-Jupiters, just to name a few. The authors of today’s paper focus on two types of exoplanets: super-Earths (planets with more mass than Earth but less mass than Neptune) and sub-Neptunes (planets of 1.7–3.9 times the size of the Earth, but with a composition similar to Neptune’s). Between these two classes of exoplanets, there is a radius “valley” in the range 1.5–2.0 Earth radii where the occurrence rate of known exoplanets is much lower. Since we can observe exoplanets above and below this radius, it’s unlikely that the valley is a result of observational limitations, so a physical mechanism is probably to blame. There are three main theories about the cause of the radius valley: photoevaporation, core-powered mass loss, and the planet forming with no gaseous outer layer to begin with (otherwise known as rocky planet formation). In a photoevaporation scenario, X-ray and/or extreme ultraviolet radiation from the host star cause the gaseous layers of a larger planet to evaporate, leaving behind only a rocky core. Photoevaporation can also destroy gasses in the protoplanetary disk, which may also impact planetary formation. In core-powered mass loss, the energy radiated during the cooling of the rocky core erodes the gas envelopes of sub-Neptune-sized planets, again leaving behind the core. Rocky planet formation is exactly what it says on the label: a rocky planet is directly produced with no gaseous layers and no evolution required. All of these theories consider only properties and dynamics within the star–planet system. Today’s authors investigate the potential effects of stellar clustering on planet formation as a cause of the radius valley. Compiling the Sample The authors analyze a sample of exoplanets from the NASA Exoplanet Archive with radii of 1–4 Earth radii and orbital periods of 1–100 days. These radii and periods are chosen so that they only analyze planets that have had these values directly measured rather than derived from mass–radius relationships. The density of stars around the planet’s host star is part of the archival data, and the sample is split into “field” and “overdensity” subgroups that consist of low stellar density and high stellar density host star regions, respectively. In this case, what constitutes low and high densities is determined by the probability of there being many stars within 40 pc of the system: field stars have an 84% probability that there aren’t many neighboring stars, and overdensity stars have an 84% probability that there are. Additionally, only systems with ages of 1–4.5 billion years are considered, since younger systems may not be stabilized and the overdense group is too small in older systems. Finally, they constrain the host star mass to 0.7–2.0 solar masses to limit the chance of observing effects that are actually caused by mass differences rather than stellar clustering. With these cuts, the authors are left with 8 field planets and 86 overdensity planets, for a total of 94. Results Simply plotting the densities and radii suggests that the authors’ idea holds up (LOWER IMAGE). In the middle panel, the gray line represents a constant radius within the radius valley. The fact that there are fewer planets around this line shows the radius valley exists, but how does that prove their idea? The field stars all lie above the radius valley, while a little more than half of the overdensity stars lie below the radius valley. If residing in a dense field can cause dynamic and radiative effects that decrease the planet’s radius, having more small planets in overdense regions is expected. But what if it’s really the effect of some other properties of the systems? Comparing the planets’ host star masses, metallicities, and ages shows no clear differences that might suggest the trend is caused by one of those characteristics. This data is compiled in the BOTTOM IMAGE. But what about the distance from Earth to the system? The further from Earth a system is, the less likely we are to be able to observe smaller planets. Could that be a factor skewing the numbers, since that could mean we just aren’t seeing the smaller planets? On average, the field systems are closer to Earth, but all of their planetary radii lie above the valley. The authors therefore conclude that the distance is probably not a contributing factor either. But what about those other mechanisms we discussed earlier? The authors consider photoevaporation within the system, mass loss, and rocky formation alongside the potential effects of densely clustered stars near the system. They conclude that stellar clustering alone can’t be responsible for the trends seen in planetary radius, but alongside one of the other three theories, clustering is certainly a potential contributor to the radius valley. The clustering would, however, affect each of the three scenarios differently. For the rocky core mass loss scenario, it is unlikely that clustering has any direct effect, since that mechanism is purely internal to the planet. The likelihood of rocky planet formation, on the other hand, can be increased by clustering effects, since neighboring stars could cause photoevaporation within the protoplanetary disk. This would decrease the amount of gas in the disk, increase the dust-to-gas ratio — the ratio of solid particles to gaseous particles in the disk — and thus increase the likelihood of rocky formation. Additionally, clustering could cause more stellar encounters with the system, which in turn could change the orbits of the planets and the effects of photoevaporation inside the system. In this paper, the authors conclude that, in addition to previous theories, the dynamic and photoevaporative effects of stars near planetary systems can contribute to the radius valley between super-Earth and sub-Neptune exoplanets. Although this doesn’t provide definite answers to why this valley exists, it provides another piece to the puzzle. Solving the mystery of this radius valley can give us more insight into planetary formation mechanisms in extrasolar systems.
