Tower of Dawn

Spoilers for Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas.

This book is one that I like to refer to as an 'amnesia book' because it's one that you don't like at all while you're reading it, but once you're done, you look back and think of it as an an okay story overall. That's why I'm giving this 3 stars, but really, it was 2/5 while I was reading it.

I'm going to start with how I feel about the ending because it just didn't sit write with me. I don't understand what the problem would have been if Chaol would have just stayed in a wheelchair. This is my biggest issue with this book: SJM created a ridiculous plot line at the end, just so Chaol could walk again. Was it really necessary to bind his life and leg strength to Nesryn? Was that really the better option compared to just letting him be disabled? There's like a million main characters in this series. What would be so wrong with one of them being in a wheelchair? It annoys me that the plot was stretched like this just to avoid that outcome.

A lot of this book was descriptions and the thoughts of the characters, rather than actual plot. It felt veryyyyy dragged out. I read this after the full series was complete, but I’d be annoyed if I’d read Empire of Storms and then had to wait two full years to get answers from Kingdom of Ash since this book takes place at the same time as the events of EoS.

SJM said this was originally intended to be a novella and I think she should have kept it that way. So many words and sentences were unnecessary. It felt like when you’ve said you all you need to in an essay, but still haven’t met the word count, so you ramble. It was frustrating to read. This could have been 400 pages at most. It took so long for any sort of plot to pick up and I don’t even know if it ever did get interesting for me. Bearable, maybe. It got okay around 75% but at that point, I had the audiobook on 1.7x speed because I just wanted it to be over with. I literally couldn’t get through more than a page before wanting to put the audiobook on. My mind would just drift elsewhere and I’d end up having to reread the page. I appreciate ‘setting the scene’ but the descriptions were too much. I don’t want to read an interior design textbook. I’ve seen design proposals with less detail.

I wanted to experience the series how the author intended, so I didn’t do the tandem read, but in hindsight, the tandem read would have made ToD go by quicker and I should have done that.

I kept confusing all the siblings at first. They just weren’t introduced as well as they could have been, so it felt skimmed over and drowned by the information of how the Khagan’s worked. Lots of information very fast. For a lot of Chaol and Nesryn’s interactions with them, I had to go back to the start to remember who they were.

If I look at this from a perspective of us seeing the aftermath of Chaol’s injury and him coming to terms with his disability, it’s an okay book, but I don’t care about Chaol or Nesryn and having to read this book after the cliffhanger and fast pacing of EoS is annoying. We’ve had 6 books of plot and then we have to get through this book of descriptions. Reading ToD felt like when I was younger and my parents would host dinners with relatives I didn’t know and I had to sit through the boring dinner before I could go back to my room and play Nintendogs.

I will say that I enjoyed the cultural aspects of this and the city itself is portrayed beautifully, but there is such a thing as too much description.

I really thought Nesryn and Chaol would stay together so the introduction of new love interests surprised me and I really like Yrene and Chaol together. Not a big fan of them as characters but it was probably the most interesting aspect of this book.

dogs but i have nothing against cats, it’s just (fun fact!) dogs were my special interest when i was younger

like i literally could’ve listed off v specific facts about every dog breed (height, weight, temperament), i only ever talked about dogs, wanted to be a dog trainer, spent all day on dog forums and playing games where u raise & train dogs. i grew up with two dogs and spent all my time training them to do complex tricks. lol oh yeah once when i was in middle school a dude referred to me as a “dog lady”. idk if he meant it as an insult or not lol. and nintendogs was so important to me,,, i don’t think i realized i should talk about other things until i was 13 lol and then my interest in them didn’t end till i was like 17/18ish

tsukishima was always very hesitant to kiss and hug tbh

the only thing he did freely without overthinking was hold your hand but even then, he’d immediately pull away if he thought his palm was getting the slightest bit sweaty (from his nerves)

so after a few years of dating, they become less of ‘random kisses’ and more like just regular kisses for tsukki but he always tries to act like it’s surprising

but they weren’t really surprising or ‘random’ bc he would always announce something to grab your attention before kissing you, like ‘babe’ or ‘wow’

also, imo ‘random kisses’ gives off a ‘sweet lil’ smooch’ sorta vibe but the kisses he gives you are far from ‘smooches’

like they are unintentionally sensual as hell

but when he’s down, blaring lo-fi music from his cat speakers and playing animal crossing, nintendogs, stardew valley or tomodachi life (etc), you’ll shower him with all your cuddles and kisses

ngl tho, when you scuttle up to him while he’s playing any game and press a lil’ kiss on his ear as you absently rub his shoulders, he literally melts

he just kinda sits there and stares at the screen but not even a fraction of his mind is dedicated on the game, it’s all just ‘(y/n). i love them so much. i hope they know that. wow, i got so lucky, i hope they never leave me. (y/n), if only you could read my mind.’

so imagine how hyped he is when you sneak up behind him in the school corridor and peck his cheek

AND IT WAS IN FRONT OF HIS FRIENDS TOO, IT WAS AWESOME

he was so triumphant about it, as if he had just won some sort of award lol

‘yes, i am the coochieman. and what about it?’

then he bought you lunch for ‘being the best s/o ever’ 🥺

but don’t think you’ll ever beat him in the random kissing game bc while he was feeding you the lunch he bought (he does that sometimes, playfully though, whenever he is feeling like a simp) he’ll lean in and steal a lil’ kiss which will lead to you choking on your rice

‘hey babe, plz don’t choke. otherwise i’ll have to give you mouth-to-mouth, ahaha.’

Pit is Autistic - A “Brief” Analysis

Kid Icarus: Uprising is my favorite game of all time, and one thing I love about it is the characterization of Pit. Specifically, I see him as autistic. Of course, this is just a headcanon of mine, but I wanted to write out a little discussion explaining why I see him as such as well as show some of the autistic traits he demonstrates in Uprising (and the occasional reference to the Guidance conversations from Smash).

(fair warning, this is not very brief)

Difficulty Understanding Words and Jokes

It’s made abundantly clear that Pit isn’t the best at picking up sarcasm or jokes. At times, he struggles with understanding words, phrases, and context. Here’s an excerpt from Chapter 11.

Pit: Good! There are survivors! Palutena: They’re a stubborn bunch hanging on like that. [...] Pit: Uh… stubborn? Palutena: Oh, I didn’t mean it like that.

Here, Pit doesn’t understand what Palutena means by “stubborn.” It’s pretty common for autistic people to struggle understanding parts of speech, such as words being used in different contexts than what they’re used to.

Medusa: Hmm… Now this is a little… bizarre. Pit: I know right? The mouth on that guy! I’d never talk like that! Medusa: That’s not what I meant. Palutena: Sorry. He can be a little… thick.

Once again, Pit is misinterpreting the situation. He doesn’t understand what Medusa is alluding to, thinking that she is talking about Dark Pit’s brash behavior. Palutena’s last comment hints that it’s very common for Pit to misunderstand people like this.

Pit: I’m Pit, servant of the goddess Palutena. I’m here to defeat Dark Lord Gaol. Magnus: So you’re here for a slice of the pie too? Pit: Huh? Pie? Where?

Chapter 2 has several examples of Pit not picking up on obvious jokes or idioms, and here’s one. Pit takes the idiom literally, not understanding what Magnus really means at first.

Viridi: Pit certainly is devoted to you, Palutena. Hades: Only because she squeezes his head wreath when he doesn’t follow orders. Palutena: You mean like… THIS?! Pit: No no no no no! You’ll squeeze my brains out! … (sigh) Why do I always fall for that?

In this example from Chapter 15, Palutena is clearly messing with Pit, but as he stated, he always falls for her jokes. Even though it’s clear she is just teasing, Pit can’t pick up on the fact that she isn’t being serious. He consistently struggles with understanding tone.

Pit: This is so annoying. Lady Palutena, help me out here! Palutena: Deploying the Palutena Super Sensor… Pit: I didn’t know you had a super sensor! Palutena: Hee hee. I don’t. You know I like to make stuff up. Pit: I can’t believe you’re messing with me at a time like this!

This dialogue from Chapter 13 is just another example of Palutena clearly joking while Pit does not pick up on it. Even though Palutena has done this time and time again, Pit still struggles to tell when someone, even a person he is incredibly close to like Palutena, is just messing with him. These are just a few examples. Pit commonly struggles with understanding language and tone throughout the game.

Using Words Differently

We can see that Pit has his own unique vocabulary with his own creative phrases like, “Calamaried!” “Re-defeated!” “Pulverazed!” and so on. Pit also makes LOTS of noises throughout the game, all of his “woohoo”s and “woah”s and whatnot. It’s just how he communicates, even if it's a bit particular or different.

Expressiveness

Pit is excitable. Like, really excitable. Sure, he’s a fun video game protagonist, but he’s always very happy-go-lucky and upbeat in a way that reads to me as autistic. Just look at how he jumps in excitement!

Additionally, while Uprising doesn’t have a lot of cutscenes with Pit just standing around talking, in the ones where he does he is usually very expressive, using his hands to talk and whatnot. Added with his excitability, I feel that this shows us that Pit is so expressive and emotional because he’s autistic!

Extra Help

Pit needs more help with understanding things in comparison to others. Palutena often goes out of her way to guide Pit, whether it be giving him directions or explaining how to defeat an enemy. While Palutena’s advice does work as a guide for the player, it’s clear that Pit needs the help more than someone else his situation might. The clearest proof we have of this comes from Chapter 22.

Palutena: Watch out for that heart-shaped crystal barrier! You see, it’s— Dark Pit: Reflecting my shots back at me, right? Palutena: Well… yes. Dark Pit: I got it, so stop telling me what to do!

Palutena is expecting Dark Pit to be like Pit, where she needs to explain to him what’s going on and offer her guidance. However, Dark Pit was able to figure out a strategy to defeat Pandora all on his own. Palutena is very aware that Pit needs a bit more help and prepares accordingly for him.

Accidental Rudeness

Many times throughout Uprising, Pit is shown speaking “rudely” towards gods or characters who have authority over him.

Pit: Oh, great! You’re the guy I’m looking for. Listen, I have a favor to ask you. Would you mind if I borrow your chariot for just a little while? Chariot Master: Your foolishness is matched only by your rudeness. How dare you charge in here, flinging unreasonable requests at me? [...] Viridi: You can’t really blame him for being upset. That was kind of rude.

Here, Pit is talking to the Chariot Master very casually, treating him like a friend despite the fact he is breaking into the Chariot Master’s tower and asking him for a precious artifact. Pit doesn’t see it as rude but Viridi and the Chariot Master clearly do. He is breaking an unwritten social norm by talking so casually to someone of high authority. Autistic people often misinterpret social situations or don’t act appropriately, sometimes resulting in “rude” behavior. There are several examples of this throughout the game, such as in Chapter 24…

Pit: You know, the Three Sacred Treasures weren’t exactly durable. Can you please make sure that this new weapon won’t just fall apart? Dyntos: Palutena, you’d be wise to put a muzzle on your chicken. Palutena: I apologize for him. Again. Pit: I… I’m sorry too. I didn’t mean to be rude.

To Pit, he is just stating a fact. However, it comes off to Dyntos as Pit being rude or even insulting his work. This is something that autistic people often do; they are blunt or honest about something, which is again mistaken as being rude.

Pit is also seen being more blunt when under emotional stress, such as in Chapter 20.

Pit: I trusted you because I knew you were on the side of justice, and… and light! But something is blocking that light now. This isn’t the real you. Viridi: Someone cue the strings… Pit: Would you mind holding the commentary for two seconds, Viridi? Phosphora: There are goddesses you’re talking to here, Pit. Watch your tone. Pit: Butt out, Phosphora! The goddess of light has turned dark. Skyworld is destroyed! Everything is wrong, and it’s up to me to make things right! Palutena: Oh, Pit. You’re just as naive as ever. Pit: I’m not naive!

Phew. This scene is pretty noteworthy to me because throughout the game, Pit is never really that angry or upset. He does show hostility, but he never really snaps at anyone, much less gods, like this. But when his home is destroyed and Lady Palutena is not herself, his emotions get the better of him. He doesn’t even seem to care that he is being “rude” to Viridi. I definitely see this moment as Pit having an outburst because of the stressful situation he is under.

Scripts / Scripting

The most obvious example of Pit using a script is with his “rally cries” that he prepares before fighting enemies. Look at the idol description for this AR Card.

He practices his rally cries a lot in order to be prepared for battles with bosses. Pit even mentions practicing his rally cries in a later chapter.

Pit: Cells of Hades, hear my words! And, um… see my actions! Uh… something, something… I’m going to rain death on you! I can’t remember all the words, but that’s the general gist. Hades: My innards have so longed to hear your battle cry. How could you forget the words? Pit: I didn’t have time to rehearse. I’ve been busy fighting evil, okay?!

While some may see the rally cries as meaningless fun, I think it could be seen as Pit having a script that he likes to fall back to when facing enemies.

His many references and quotes to video games could be seen as scripting, too. There are lots of instances in Uprising, and especially in Palutena’s Guidance, where Pit quotes famous video game phrases or imitates sounds. Which leads me to…

Special Interest

Pit’s special interest is video games. While Pit’s very vast knowledge of video games could just be because of Uprising’s fourth-wall breaking style of humor, I think it could also be seen as Pit having an intense interest in games. He references various video games such as Metroid, Nintendogs, and Super Smash Bros. in-game. He seems to enjoy bringing up video games or referencing video game mechanics whenever he can, which is very similar to how autistic people enjoy bringing up their special interests in conversations whenever possible. Additionally, while the Palutena’s Guidance conversations aren’t 100% accurate to canon, Pit constantly references and alludes to various video games in them, such as quoting Reyn in Shulk’s conversation or Peppy and General Pepper in Fox’s (which ties back to him scripting). It’s clear that he loves video games and talking about video games!

Pit: Those Aurum troops are doing their best Game and Watch impression! Viridi: Check out the gaming IQ on this guy! You’re a regular video game historian!

Sensory Issues

Throughout the game, Pit seems to have an obsession with hot springs. It is never outright explained why he loves them so much, but I’m led to believe it is because of sensory reasons. Many autistic people use extreme temperatures to help soothe or calm themselves, such as cold showers or hot baths. It can often help with sensory overload. Hot springs, similarly to hot baths, may be a way to help soothe Pit and keep his sensory issues to a minimum.

Pit’s habits with his tunic seem to hint towards sensory issues, too. He doesn’t like to be without his robes, stating that he keeps them on even when he’s in the hot spring. When his clothes seemingly get messed up in Chapter 21, he gets upset, exclaiming that it’s his only tunic. Wearing the same clothes or same types of clothes/fabric is pretty typical for autistic people, and Pit wearing the same tunic everyday is similar to that.

Additionally, Pit’s habits with food could be because of sensory differences. He very well could be hyposensitive to food and tastes, which is why he eats a lot and doesn’t seem to care about what he eats (as long as it isn’t vegetables, according to the Revolting Dinner short ;D ) .

Small Social Circle

Pit doesn’t have a whole lot of people he can rely on. Before Uprising, the only person he seems to have any affinity for is Palutena. Other than that, he doesn’t seem to talk to anyone else. We don’t have a clear picture on what his relationship with the Centurions is like, but based off of the Revolting Dinner short and Chapter 17, he only really talks to them when he’s working as the Captain of the Army and not as a friend.

While yes, Pit is the only angel left in Skyworld, I still think it’s important to bring up that Pit only really has Palutena to rely on. By the end of Uprising, he has Viridi and Dark Pit as well, but his only clear and completely positive relationship is his mother-son bond with Palutena. I see this as Pit struggling to really befriend others. He’s had over two decades between the original game and Uprising to befriend the Centurions, but again, he only really has Palutena. It’s pretty typical for autistic people to have very small social circles, consisting of just one or two friends. Palutena seems to fit the role of mother and best friend for Pit, and she even remarks that he should make more friends in Chapter 4.

Working Alone

This is a small one, but still something that I think is worth pointing out. Pit seems very adamant on accomplishing his missions on his own, telling Dark Pit on two separate occasions (Chapter 9 and Chapter 21) that he can handle the situation by himself. Similarly, it’s common for autistic people to prefer working by themselves rather than with others. Paired with the previous point about having a small social circle, this just reads to me as Pit not feeling too comfortable in situations with others.

Conclusion

There’s a few other points that I feel I could bring up but overall I think these are my main points summed up (and yes, I said summed up. this used to be over 2500 words) ! 2/17 NINTENDO DIRECT PREDICTIONS, HOPES, AND DREAMS...

(If even just one of these happens I will be so happy lol)

Predictions

- HW Age of Calamity DLC: (HWAOC SPOILERS AHEAD) Here’s my idea for 2 different packs: one a Sheikah Pack and the other a Villain Pack. Sheikah pack will include Robbie/Purah as well as maps for Hateno & Kakariko with a side story about sheikah tech or researching the ancient weapons. Also some new costumes! Villain Pack will include Sooga/Astor and an “alternate world” (actual pre-BOTW) story where the calamity wins..... and some more costumes!

- Zelda 35th: I think there will be an HD Collection of some kind. TP & WW ported with Ocarina of Time possibly. I can see Skyward Sword coming as well but with a separate launch— I feel like SS is going to take a while longer to port since it has complex motion controls. Maybe a little bit of merch is announced too. Nintendo could also simply refer to an upcoming Zelda direct later this week to focus exclusively on it...

-Smash Character reveal! I think it’s going to be... CRASH! (I honestly don’t have strong feelings about Smash so I’m pretty indifferent about the DLC characters...) Maybe there will be a Zelda/Age of Calamity character to tie in with the anniversary? I still have hope for Impa even though she was a sticker...

-A new Kirby or Donkey Kong Title. Another platformer!

-Pokemon will be tabled entirely for next week. If anything, we’ll get another teaser for New Pokemon Snap with an announcement of when to watch more pokemon direct things next week.

Hopes (Less Likely Yet Still Possible I think??)

-BOTW2 Teaser Trailer!! This could happen but they could also be saving it for the summer/E3 or whatever. If it’s guaranteed a holiday (or sooner?) title this year, then yes it’ll be shown! They could also show some key art or something... i would still die of happy.

-Switch Pro announcement...Launching... this holiday...

-Diamond/Pearl Remakes announcement to kick off the hype for more info next week.

-Mario Kart 8 DLC as a surprise... Even more tracks!!!??

Dreams (VERY unlikely BUT OH WELL)

-Age of Calamity DLC BUUUUTTT EVERYONE IS A BABY.... Baby Sidon. Young Zelda, Young Link etc, with new maps/plots to explain origin stories of each character and get more info about Zelda’s mother... Her mother is even a playable character??? But the main attraction is to play as Baby Sidon with a giant trident. I think this idea is weird enough that it would make fun DLC that I would buy lol.

- NINTENDOGS SWITCH!!! We need HD doggos with online doggo playdates.

-SWITCH SPORTS!! Bring back wii bowling with HD rumble! And golf!

-Tomodachi Life sequel. After 2020, we need this level of silly in a game again.

Character Palette/Personality Palette

If I have seen the movie/show/or whatever this character is in I will let you know! But if I haven't I'm just gonna give my best guess to their personality or what I think they like and everything. I will make them two palettes, one based on their appearance and one based on what I think their personality is. If you'd rather not see this just block the tag "character palette and personality guess" I figure no one's tagging anything like that so it should be easy to filter out. If you genuinely like this character and I lowkey diss them I'm sorry, I'm not going to apologize though, you're going to have to live with it. Alright so this is Bobo from the game Love Nikki Dress Up Queen. Vaguely heard about it, never played it.

If Gretel from the Hansel and Gretel was an anime girl this is what she would look like. I don't particularly like her outfit, it's very orangey yellow and those are my least favorite colors. Her socks are better than Nikki's though. Shoes are kinda whack. Doesn't matter, she seems nice. Has a very child-like innocence to her. Oh my god, hold on. Is her hair just two braids or is it two braids and then it's down the in the back? Oh no. Oh no, no, no I don't like that at all. Hair down? Fine. Hair in two braids? Fine. But both? No. I don't think so. I don't like it. Apart from the hair I don't have a problem with anything else character design wise, except like maybe the ruffles. But I wont focus on that. She's got a dog face. Not in a bad way but like the hair reminds me of one of those dogs that look kind of tired a lot with the big fluffy ears that's texture that doesn't match its body. A cocker spaniel, I couldn't find a picture of the one I was thinking about but the one I'm using as a reference in my mind is the one from nintendogs. The white one with brown on its ears and around its eyes. It's got like a small patch of white on its head that's in a wine glass shape. Anyway, back to her personality. She seems nice, probably dumb, like she'd follow someone into the woods and leave a trail of breadcrumbs. She's got the same energy as the character who's always getting kidnapped. This kid has got "I am always in danger" written on her forehead. You just can't see it because once again we got a character with bangs. I don't understand the bangs, I don't get it. I know you have a big forehead, you know it, just embrace it. Love yourself and your big ass forehead. Also, why does it say evolved on the side, someone who knows what this is about please explain this. Is she a fucking Pokemon? What does she evolve into? What's her moveset? I don't know but she seems nice. She'd probably a good babysitter for someone not a baby. Maybe like a kinda rowdy nine year old or something, maybe a puppy.

sdr2 youtuber au headcanons

-yknow how markiplier did that video where he learned how to pole dance with the game grumps…. hinata does that with souda and kuzuryuu. komaeda is their cameraman

-nanami and hinata live together, but everyone thinks it’s just an elaborate prank they’re pulling to justify why they do so many collabs. hinata does a house tour and nanami is very visibly asleep in her bed in her room and souda comments that it’s a scam

-nanami’s channel is called “nanami.exe” and it’s gaming, obviously. she has a series called “playing games with a literal [blank]” where she brings in one of her friends and they play something that’s related to their profession/personality. like “playing wheel of fortune with a literal four leaf clover” with komaeda, “playing trauma centre with a literal nurse” with tsumiki, “playing nintendogs with a literal tamer of hell beasts” with tanaka, etc and etc.

-tsumiki doesn’t have a lot of videos because she’s shy ofc, but she makes really quick and helpful videos like “how to properly do the heimlich” “what to do if someone has hypothermia” “how to make a makeshift splint if you hurt yourself outside”

-everyone has admitted to having a crush on hinata at one point or another in videos or on twitter. he is baffled each time. special quotes include:

someone in her chat: are you gonna join the troupe of people who have declared their undying love for hinata

nanami, merking someone in splatoon: you guys didn’t know him in high school. how could you not fall for that dumb ass

komaeda, reading out a message for a q&a video: “are you also in the group of people who used to have a crush on hinata?”

komaeda: what do you mean “used to”

-hinata is eternally confused by this quote in particular and never brings it up

-speaking of komahina, komaeda does storytime videos and vlogs, usually, and hinata does lifestyle videos and challenges. komaeda’s stories are WACK and saionji likes to make fun of them in her videos (like pyrocynical, she bullies children) but he’s just like “yeah my life is like this”

-mioda forces all of her friends to do covers with her on her channel. a solid 90% of them would rather perish than sing for all of her subscribers. special hits include don’t stop me now with hinata and sexy naughty bitchy me with saionji

-everyone gets confused and yet excited abt how often these wildly different youtubers collab. “is that the breeding dude… in the same video as the car mechanic?” “why is that guy who does cosplay collabing with the yakuza guy???”

-oh yeah, the imposter does cosplay. they have a very dry sense of humour but are also very encouraging, especially to fans who think they can’t cosplay because of their body type.

-tanaka has a crazy dark aesthetic going on, and his preferred style of lighting is candles and hanging lanterns. his channel name is Lord Of Darkness. he makes the most adorable videos ever, about raising and breeding animals and proper ways to take care of pets. his entire fanbase thinks he is the most pure man alive, even though he refers to himself as a resident of hell.

-sonia does conspiracy theory videos. she brings in the other girls, mostly akane, to do bfu type investigations with her. you know the recent episode where they have that guy (i think his name was curly?) do the la llorona investigation? sonia’s got the same energy

-of COURSE nidai does self improvement videos, fitness stuff, personal training advice, and is overall just a really wholesome youtuber?? he does a “draw my life” where he talks abt all his time in the hospital and everyone’s like THIS MAN ONLY DESERVES HAPPINESS and nanami comments “rt if you’re crying in the club rn”

-hinata does one of those 24 hour charity streams and stays awake the whole time out of pure hubris. he becomes a legend, and so many inside jokes are spawned that you just “had to be there for.” komaeda and nanami do it with him. (extremely obscure reference but if any of u guys know the time shane streamed for 8 hours trying to date himself in asagao academy while he got progressively drunker and drunker, same energy)

-they do SO MANY COLLABS that all of their fans just kind of assume they all live together in the same house or apartment complex. except nanami and hinata of course who live countries apart. it actually becomes an entire conspiracy with people trying to put together who lives where

-at one point komaeda does a video that’s “asmr but it’s your thirst messages that you send me on tumblr” and every time he reads one out he looks disappointedly into the camera. then he does a sequel video where hinata reads them to him and it’s A Lot

-conversely, hinata does the same idea, but he reads out hate comments, and at the end he just looks square into the camera and starts crying. no one can tell if they’re real tears, not even hinata (a la the end of top dan memes of 2017. i think it was 2017)

-souda unironically does the “make sure to like comment and subscribe” shtick, but we support him

-tanaka has a single brightly coloured sign in his set up that says “trans rights” why wouldn’t he, the man’s basically damien from dream daddy anyways

-you know how there’s that new group of youtubers who just do reddit videos or stuff like callmecarson? that, but it’s the survivor gang (kuzu, souda, hinata, sonia, and akane) and they make fun of memes together, without being offensive lmao

-pekoyama does the most GRACEFUL videos ever, like they’re super well shot (koizumi) and amazingly edited and are her either fighting or teaching techniques. all of her fans call her “sensei” and it embarrasses her. it’s adorable

-koizumi does editing and photography tips and tricks as well as vlogs. she helps out with pretty much everyone’s videos and is affectionately referred to as #team mom

Somebody save the Nintendogs!

I’m just going to be really honest with all of you right now, I haven’t properly played a game since Nintendog’s were the popular trend in 2005. That’s right 14 years later and my beautiful golden Labrador named Bella, must be soo damn hungry right now!

Let’s just have a quick flashback of the cringy games I used to play as a seven year old, just for laughs. There was:

DS: Nintendogs & an Ice Age Game; which name escapes my mind.

PSP: Shrek & a unicorn/ horse riding game!?!?

PC: Zoo Tycoon (which was the best!)

You could really tell what the trends were for seven year old girls at the time, couldn’t you? *insert embarrassed/ nervous laughing here*

Anyways, back to games, more specifically people who game, and why they bother?

Personally, I am a movies, tv, and music type of humanoid; and you might say that gaming is foreign territory for me, except for Games of Thrones of course *wink wink*. Did you see what I did there? I’m hilarious! Get a stage ready for me at the Melbourne Comedy Festival!

Games come in many forms… video games (PC, DS, PSP,PS, Wii), mobile apps, board games and even social games such as Tiggy and Cops and Robbers. Oh the primary school flashbacks are starting to hit me.

According to Caillois (Many, Play and Games 1961), Games are appealing to people because they are:

Free: playing is not obligatory

Separate: circumscribed within limits of space and time

Uncertain: about the journey, it is not predetermined

Unproductive: creating neither good nor wealth, only an exchange is the exception

Governed by rules: suspends ordinary laws and establishes momentary new laws

Make believe: second reality or unreality against real life

So in summary, I can play Grand Theft Auto by choice, when I want, not knowing what I will do in the game session, for an exchange of enjoyment and escape from real life, and run over as many ladies of the night and pimps as I wish without consequences, such as jail time for murder.

When in reality, Law and Order CI/SVU like detectives would probably be knocking on my door within 24 hours with a pair of handcuffs and a jail cell with my name on it, for murdering civilians.

I understand why people would play games, to escape the boring constructs of the ordinary life. But some people get obsessive over games, take ‘Sims’ for example.

The Sims, according to the ever so trustworthy Wikipedia (I won’t tell that is was used, If you don’t), ‘is a series of life simulation video games developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts’, players can create and design their own homes and avatars. When this game was released I remember my older brother being obsessed with it! I mean spending hours and hours in The Sims, as soon as he got home from school.

Caillois would describe this type of gaming community as ‘Mimicry (simulation) players’. The Sims and other simulation games allows the players to escape from reality and become illusionary characters.

I think that games like this do have a God-complex, that people play it because they like the power. If you’ve had a shitty day at real life work, you could kill your sim. The God-complex can be really scary, as some sims can be really dark. For example putting a baby on a BBQ. Yikes!

But, I think that’s why people like games, they play for entertainment, pleasure, power, anger and procrastination.

Even though my heart lies with movies, tv and music, I might have to crack out the DS and show my Nintendog Bella love much needed love.

June 7: Going through the Smash E3 Trailers

Well, the title says it all. How to best predict or understand what we might see on Tuesday? Look at the history. I should note I’ll be ignoring Melee, as the nature of how information on it came out (and how people reliably accessed it) makes it more of an outlier.

E3 2005: A new Super Smash Bros. game for the Wii, then-called Revolution, is announced.

E3 2006: The first trailer for what is now named Super Smash Bros. Brawl releases.

Veterans: Mario, Link, Pikachu, and Kirby - four of the five main Smash fighters. Samus is also shown, albeit in a way that doesn’t confirm her inclusion in her classic form.

Meta Knight (Newcomer): One of the most popular characters requested, Meta Knight follows Peach as the first newcomer revealed and part of a franchise already represented. You can also argue his placement references his (and the Halberd‘s) involvement in “The Subspace Emissary.”

Pit (Newcomer): Another highly requested character, filling the Ice Climbers’ role as an iconic retro hero. Notably, he also sports a drastic redesign.

Zero Suit Samus (Newcomer): ZSS was probably never anyone’s most wanted character. However, her inclusion is necessary; she obliquely represents the new Final Smash mechanic.

Wario (Newcomer): Outside of Sonic, Wario probably was the most wanted character - but fans assumed he would use his classic costume. This shows he will be fighting as a wildly new fighter, one who represents a sub-series that started after the release of Melee.

Snake (Newcomer): Shocking everyone, the last reveal is of, for the first time ever, a third party character into the battle, and one no one would have rightly expected. Snake’s inclusion sparks a change in the Smash community where previously laughable, mocked suggestions can “potentially” be plausible.

Alongside characters, we also see new, unnamed stages: Battlefield, Halberd, Castle Siege, Pokémon Stadium 2, Skyworld, Mario Circuit (Brawl), and Yoshi's Island (Brawl) (Shadow Moses Island would be revealed in accompanying screenshots). A Nintendog hints at the new Assist Trophy item. And we see incredibly “super attacks,” later dubbed Final Smashes, which fighters can acquire by collecting a ball with the Smash logo.

E for All, 2007: While not part of E3, this is the period in which the public is allowed to play a demo for Brawl, featuring Sonic the Hedgehog - who had been revealed only eleven days prior. As for E3 itself, 2007 has a fifteen second video revealing only Donkey Kong. I’m not going to highlight it here for space.

E3 2011: A new Smash Bros. game is announced, which will appear on both Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

E3 2013: The first trailer and sizable accompanying information for what is now named the collective Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS & Wii U are released during a Nintendo Direct.

Veterans: Mario, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, Pit, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, and Bowser.

Villager (Newcomer): while Villager’s chances and popularity were debated and debatable, Animal Crossing is a huge franchise for Nintendo. Using him to almost literally lead off the cast makes sense.

Mega Man (Newcomer): A new precedent is set: unlike with Brawl, newcomers to Smash For (excluding clones) were given individual trailers. Having Mega Man’s be the first makes sense; he was possibly the most requested guest fighter after Sonic.

Wii Fit Trainer (Newcomer): Unlike the other newcomers, Wii Fit Trainer - the game’s new surprising, out of nowhere fighter - is now revealed in the Direct itself but on the show after the fact. Her reveal comes at a demonstration in which Sakurai plays a match, and before a video of him discussing the game’s ideas is released.

Altogether, we see extensive information from those trailers. New stages are later revealed to be Battlefield, 3D Land, Gerudo Valley, Spirit Train, Skyloft, Arena Ferox, Living Room, Boxing Ring, Town and City, Wii Fit Studio, and Wily Castle. Of noteworthy shots, one is of a jungle-esque stage, and the other is a platform-less version of Battlefield; in an April 2014 Smash-centered Direct these would be revealed as part of Smash Run and an Omega Form, respectively. Finally, one CGI scene shows Mario followed by five other fighters on Battlefield, arguably hinting at the Wii U version’s Eight-Player Smash mode.

E3 2014: Attention ahoy. You’ll note that this isn’t a trailer; instead of taking up one part of the Direct, Smash bookends Nintendo’s (rather good) showing.

Mii Fighter (Newcomer): The Miis were no one’s favorite choice for a character, but they excite because they introduce to the series the ability to actually customize your own fighters - a godsend in a series beloved and notorious for how wide its breadth of inspiration reaches. This also dovetails with the end of the show, in which Palutena, the newcomer and only other fighter whose special attacks vary wildly like them, closes out the event.

Pac-Man (Newcomer): Pac-Man is unveiled at a private showroom after a massive Smash Bros. invitational tournament, one in which sixteen competitive fighters play on a build which would later be available to E3 attendees. The invitational itself provides some information that had been revealed and clarifies other points, from how certain Assist Trophies function to the utility of different items.

E3 2015: While Nintendo does not feature Smash in any capacity during its Direct and only minimally during its post-show “Treehouse Live at E3″ segments, they announce and release a wealth of downloadable content for Smash For. Lucas, announced months prior, is released alongside fellow veteran Roy and newcomer Ryu, from Street Fighter.

So...what can we take from this?

Well, I think it says a few things. Mostly, the newcomers shown off will be fairly big in terms of fame and popularity. I know that seems insultingly obvious, but it’s true. A third party fighter especially seems likely; if the game really is coming out this year, it makes sense to show any and all they can. Like, I feel like if Ridley is coming to Smash, showing him off here seems the smartest, given his colossal popularity, instead of on the side or as an unlockable fighter.

I think it’s also interesting how some are chosen. Of all the newcomers, only three - Meta Knight, Zero Suit Samus, and Palutena - came from prior series. And of those, Meta Knight’s the only one whose entire design isn’t tied to a mechanic introduced in that game. This isn’t to say they’re not going to appear here at all, just that most likely we may see new series represented.

Those two fighters lead me to something else: there will very likely be mechanics, items, powers, or modes the trailers will obliquely show or reference without explicitly saying. I do suspect that those 2005 and 2013 trailers deliberately hinted at the story mode and Eight-Player Smash, respectively. So while most crazy theorizing will be just that, maybe you will stumble upon or uncover something that’ll turn out huge.

However, this also says we should not put all our stock in only this showing. In an interview today with the Hollywood Reporter, Bill Trinen admitted that they will be keeping some Smash surprises for after the event. It shouldn’t surprise anyone; this series has never been one to show all its cards. So be excited, hope for more stuff, but also remember that this won’t be the be-all and end-all of this new iteration. All of these videos only prove how no matter how much information we get, so much can, and will, be hidden.

Also, as a minor point, it’s likely that Smash may not be relegated to just one section of the event. I suspect it’ll both start and end it, the way it was in 2014. As important as this game is for Nintendo, they have other stuff to show. Pokémon Let’s Go is a big deal, there’s potentially Fire Emblem for Switch (and other announced games in development), there’s the increasingly inevitable announcement of Fortnite; they may have a lot on their plate (one rumor says it might be upwards of forty-five minutes - which is apparently about twice as long as the fairly packed one last year).

But finally, just remember that all of these are nothing more than precedents and commonalities. A lot of Sakurai’s general directions here make sense, but we don’t know if he’ll be using the same kind of character trailers the last game(s) did or going back to the Brawl “general stuff” kind of trailer, or something entirely different.

Cats and dogs will always be popular, of course, but horses and fish were also in high demand. He Legend of Zelda the franchise has Link’s iconic horse as the main protagonist and Red Dead Redemption 2 yields wonderfully cinematic horseback riding in the countryside, as well as necessary interactions such as feeding, stroking, and preparing. I’ve already mentioned one (of many!) Fish games available. And for those looking for something even further out of the way, there’s the adorable Chtulhu to increase as own.

So these are the digital pets that came before. What about the things to come?

Today and tomorrow

With each new technological advancement, a virtual pet of some sort will follow. Shortly afterwards Apple introduced the Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro, the Touch bar mascot He came. Using the limited space, you can feed your pet, throw some red ball to play with, and clean it afterwards. A nice idea, but hardly to be considered a game. I would file this virtual pet in “distraction” instead of companion.

David Fazzio is the solo developer of the Studio 46 game The companion, which, in addition to being impressive in both sound and visuals, offers players the opportunity to see the other side of company life. Here, the animal refers to a “spiritual companion,” and the players are the creature itself. Fazzio says, “As a companion,” you will gain the kindness, trust, and love of the characters in human history. At certain times you will interact with the characters in human history and you will be pets, you will be able to sit, stretch and offer a leg. ”Now I felt like I was approaching the reasons why digital pets maintained this influence on users. .

The ability to rub your pet behind the ears seems an essential part of the design. Tristan Cooper owns Twitter account “You can pet the dog,”It collects user data about which video games allow players to interact kindly with dogs (and sometimes with other animals). “I think people who like to pet video game dogs do it with different perspectives,” he says. “Some players will see it as a good break from the increasingly complex and demanding standards of modern AAA play. Some players will see it as a way to reconnect with a beloved child pet that has been passed down. Some players like beautiful animals. There is a positive feedback loop to pet animals from the game and receive enchanted reactions from them.

Virtual reality developers are also playing to create pet games. The Oculus-based one Bogo offers adorable creatures to consider pets and being inside virtual reality headphones provides players with a complete sensory interaction experience. Here you can bend over to pet your pet and physically rotate your arm to throw a stick. Imagine your beloved pet living forever in virtual reality!

Virtual pet ownership can also be a trick. ZED is a horse racing and breeding site based on blockchain technology. Users spend real world money to buy, breed, compete and sell digital horses. Each includes its own unique coding set, hidden from users to add even more realistic unknown factors.

If horses aren’t yours, there are too Aavegotchi, which works like an updated Tamagotchi, only created for cryptographic generation. Users can buy their avatars and take care of them in the same way they did in the 90s.

After analyzing all this, it is clear that digital pets will always have something to offer us. They represent the company when we may not have any. They nurture our needs to take care of other beings. It is a pleasure that we quickly invite into our lives. The multiple species of brightly colored fish in my virtual aquarium are proof that they provide something that would be impossible to achieve in real life.

Satisfied with this, I know my fish are doing well, so I turn off my iPad and can finally sleep.

the games i played to completion in 2017, ranked in order of how much i liked them

mostly for my own reference and i’m gonna try to keep this out of the tags but read on if you want to read about me getting super excited about video games i guess

p/ersona 5 - look i know this wasn’t a perfect game like there are Several Large Complaints i would like to file regarding plot and pacing and premise even but this was. still my favorite game of 2017 and just such an enjoyable 120 hours to have spent holy fuck?? like everyone’s always talking about how stylish p5 is and goddamn are they right like it’s such a gorgeous game!! the loving detail they put into every aspect of the UI, the beautiful character sprites, that effortlessly cool contemporary tokyo vibe that oozes into every aspect of the game!! and the gameplay (which i played on normal difficulty, being a series beginner) was both challenging and rewarding and both the dungeons and the school life segments (considering the sheer variety of Shit You Could Do not to mention all the charming-ass characters with compelling sideplots) were just. an absolute treat?? plus the soundtrack to this game was just killer so there’s also that

n/ier: automata - SPEAKING OF GAMES WITH GR8 SOUNDTRACKS. i think this game’s soundtrack probably ranks up there with my favorite video game OSTs of ALL TIME FOREVER like seriously. it is so so good. anyway friends it took me four (4) days to beat this game and another full 24 hours just to process this game like. y’all know i’m always a slut for sad robots and BOY HOWDY did this game have that thing. not only is the game itself gorgeous but i’m pretty much in love with the Entire cast (but especially 9S, who is my special son) and i’m crying,, eternally,, about the c/d/e routes and even though it probably wasn’t the Most impressive and best written game Ever it had a lot of good twists and revelations and a real sense of weight and suspense esp. in the later playthroughs which i am ALL ABOUT. not being much of an action RPG person i never really fell in love w/ the combat but it was fun enough even though it got kind of repetitive and too hack-and-slashy for my taste after a while?? actually fuck the bullet hell hacking minigame tho if i’m gonna be real

f/ire emblem fates (birthright, conquest, and revelation) - listen i know this game was like objectively garbage but i’m still trying to justify having spent a literal 1/3 of my year playing it so bear with me for just 2 hot seconds. first of all hi yes there’s a running theme here bc i dig the shit out of fe14′s OST?? also even though the plot was kind of a mess the characters and supports still grew on me a lot after a while and actually the gameplay was really fun?? maybe it’s bc i played it on hard/classic (as opposed to fea which i played on normal/casual) but i really enjoyed the combat a lot more in these games than fea--actually i do think there’s actually a lot of actual improvements here, especially with all the new classes, the improved dual guard/dual strike rules, and no fucking weapon durability, etc. as well as a lot of the more unusual victory conditions (in conquest and revelation, not so much in birthright) like i feel like there were a lot of highlights and i genuinely enjoyed the battles in fe14 a lot and sure the whole waifu nintendogs concept is creepy as hell and babyrealm is a fucking joke but i still thought this was a Pretty good or at least enjoyable game so you can fight me on that front

d/anganronpa v3 - ok let me me the first to admit that i honestly?? don’t really like dr as a franchise very much and the only real reason i got into it in the first place is to fill the ace attorney-shaped hole in my heart in between releases thereof (as well as superficial similarities to other games i like, like ze) and while i still enjoy the gameplay and investigating and mystery-solving parts of it and those aspects i still find very enjoyable and well-written a lot of the rest of the games really kind of fall flat for me?? like tbh i’m not a huge fan of the art style, the sense of humor and localization don’t really do it for me, the characters are cute but kind of over-the-top and not super relatable to me personally, and honestly the whole ~evil mastermind did it for the lulz~ trope being played super straight disappointed me a lot about the first game especially?? that being said i know this is a bit of a base breaker but i actually really liked the direction that sdr2 took with its ending and it made me hopeful for the sequel, which brings me to drv3 which surprised me in a lot of pleasant ways?? like personally i think it’s the best dr yet and while i can see why people would be disappointed with the ending and feel like it may be a cop-out i think it was still clever enough that i appreciate it for trying?? or maybe it’s just bc i didn’t like the original so much and the departure from that felt like kind of a breath of relief but that’s just me idk

f/inal fantasy x - guess who was late to the party and played her first final fantasy in this year of the lord 2017!!! it’s me!!! honestly i was expecting more from this game overall in terms of plot just because it’s such a Classic and all but fwiw i still liked it?? i didn’t super love any of the main characters and the story was a little predictable and even though i played the remaster it’s still an obviously dated game but NEVERTHELESS it was still just a solid RPG and i genuinely enjoyed playing it!! i should play the sequel sometime but. i’ll get to it after i clear out this massive backlog i have currently as we speak sobs

the witness - i don’t talk about this game enough bc honestly it isn’t the kind of game that can have a real fanbase (no real characters or plot, etc.) but i still enjoyed the fuck out of this, holy hell. i mean it’s i guess kind of an open-world exploration-slash-puzzle concept which sounds kind of boring but the world is gorgeous and the way the game presents these puzzles for you to solve and teaches you the rules in a way that’s entirely self-explanatory and intuitive but still super difficult and ultimately rewarding is just so gratifying and i was just so so impressed at how creative they got with these puzzle designs and the way the world seems to unfold itself the more you unlock its secrets?? anyway i know this is near the bottom bc i do love me a video game story and this particular game doesn’t have that but PLAY THIS GAME IF YOU LIKE PUZZLES IT IS JUST SO COOL AND FUN AND GOOD

the n/onary games (999 only) - this is a replay but still worth mentioning i think?? obviously 999 is one of my favorite games of all time and i was super pumped about the remake and while i didn’t quite enjoy it as much as the very first time i played 999 on my DS it was still a good game!! tbh i mostly just played this game for the voice acting which i was pretty impressed with, and also i got to pick up a lot of the bilingual bonuses i obviously missed while playing my localized copy of the original game which was cool!! i wasn’t as impressed with the updated sprites unfortunately, i felt like their quality was inconsistent and some of them looked like kind of a rush job to me but ymmv i guess?? i think overall i still prefer the DS version even with improvements like the flow chart in the newer version, mostly because 1. i actually appreciated having to literally replay parts of the game in the former bc i feel like it’s more in the spirit of the game if you know what i mean, and 2. some details near the ending that they changed, which you definitely know what i mean if you played the game. still, i appreciate that it’s made the game more widely accessible and if you haven’t played the game pls go play this game i’m literally begging u,,

u/mineko (question arcs only) - ok the only reason i have this 8th on this list is just bc i haven’t technically finished it yet and BOY am i the kind of person who lives entirely for that sweet sweet payoff but there really isn’t THAT much i can say?? like thanks to the ps3 patch the art is pretty decent i guess?? i’m liking all the characters so far?? there’s a whole lot of Bullshit that doesn’t make any sense at this point but i’ve been promised metagame and mindfuck in due time so i guess i’ll just have to see?? yeah this is more of a tbd review than anything i don’t really know what to say besides i’m just so eager to play the other half of this game and get the answers to all these gotdamn MYSTERIES already

braid - i mostly just played this bc i knew it was made by the same person?? studio?? as the witness and while i liked braid and i really enjoyed the puzzles it was just too short for it to have really made an impression on me?? like i know that there is a story and a Twist but it didn’t really do much for me with how abstract it was and just in terms of sheer volume of content it doesn’t quite compare to the other games on this list like don’t get me wrong it was still good!! and if you need a way to kill an afternoon i still highly recommend it but it just wasn’t as memorable to me as p5 or nier was unfort
