Definitions & Examples of Fanvids and Animatics
A fanvid is also known as a songvid, a video edit, tribute and sometimes a fancam. GMV is also a popular term for video game specific edits, just like AMV is for anime music videos.
This fanwork is usually some kind of television or film source with clips arranged in a certain order to create a narrative that is set to audio (usually music and/or dialogue and sound effects).
Example: War Pigs (2:17) by Grabel424 - a gen Witcher Netflix vid focusing on the theme of violence from season 1. This has some very sharp editing that matches the beats of the song to some really interesting visuals from the show.
Example: Just Like Fire (3:33) by Tami - an Eskel, Ciri, Geralt, Triss and Yen vid featuring their perseverance from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The vibe and lyrics of this song give emotional weight to the clip choices as they fight and survive the events of the game.
An animatic is a type of fanvid that features storyboarded illustrations and is set to some kind of audio (music, sound effects, dialogue).
Example: Ciri Portrait | A Witcher 3 animation (0:27) - by abuzzybee. This animatic features a Ciri scene with incredible sound effects and illustration style.
Example: Hard To Be The Bard | A Jaskier animatic (0:59) - by CosmicWahoo. These illustrations are so fun and well edited to a song from the musical comedy ‘Something Rotten.’ This features a song sung by the Shakespeare character himself. Very fitting for Jaskier!
But I don't know ANYTHING about fanvids!
Vidders value ALL feedback they receive, even from–especially from–from non-vidders. Vidders are spending hours making their vids and putting it out in the world. Vidders REALLY want you to watch their vids and know what you think!
This type of fanwork has typically received less comment activity than fanfic over the years because people are afraid of not knowing what to say or saying something wrong. If this sounds like you, please join me in learning how to make a vidder’s year by leaving them some feedback.
Best Practices/Suggestions
Watch the vid more than once!
Just like watching a film or TV episode for the first time, you are absorbing new material. Watching a vid a second time will allow you to absorb the song choice, lyrics and narrative the vidder is trying to tell with the character, pairing or subject.
Vidders watch and rewatch their vid and song a hundred million times during the process of making the video.
If you watch the vid multiple times, tell the vidder what you took away from the vid during your first watch. Then on the second viewing, describe if you saw anything new or had a better understanding of the lyrical associations with the character or ship or narrative.
Ask questions!
There are MANY ways to make a fanvid and every editor has a different process. They use different tools, techniques, and ways of telling a story. Different sources of inspiration and tricks they picked up along the way to finish their vid.
Ask about music selection. They might reveal their inspiration and how it influenced the way they arranged the clips to tell their narrative. Example: A common question is "Did you have the song idea first or the pairing/narrative idea first?"
Ask what software or apps they use to make their video. You can ask them how long it took (some people can work fast, other people will spend months or years to complete a single project). This will give you insight into the work they undertook before they even started putting the story together!
Ask about their feelings about the subject they're vidding. The canon. The characters. The pairing or themes or emotional content of the vid. "Why did you choose this character's story arc from the first season?"
Insights from a Vidder
In my 15 years of watching and making fanvids, you never know what the vidder planned and what happened serendipitously unless you ask.
Some vidders spend hours or days on a 5 second sequence that no one will notice.
Many, many times the vidders will create amazing sequences, effects or clip choices by pure accident, serendipity, or trial and error. It's rarely what a viewer assumes when you're watching a vid unless you are familiar with a vidder's process or style.
Learning the story of how vidder's make their story can give you insights of how they approached a canon's visuals, character's emotional arcs and what choices they are making to create the story they are sharing with you. This can reveal new or different ideas of how to view characters, pairings, and themes in a canon source.
Basic/Advanced/Intermediate Feedback
Basic Feedback (Examples/Suggestions):
Simply showing up and saying, “I liked watching this!” will mean the world to vidders. So will a string of emojis, keyboard smashing and gif reactions.
Describe how you felt while watching the vid. Example: “I am SOBBING, this vid has ruined me.” or “I cannot stop laughing because Jaskier is DEFINITELY Taylor Swift… OMG.”
Ask the vidder a question about the song or clip choices to gain a better understanding of what story the vidder is trying to tell. Example: “Is there an additional meaning when you used this shot of Yen looking sad to [specific lyric]?”
Intermediate Feedback:
Did this vid make you see a character, ship or subject in a new light? Example: “I would have never guessed Fiona/Donkey from Shrek would parallel with Yen/Jaskier so perfectly…WTF omg 😍”
Let the vidder know if you made a connection between their song choice and subject matter. Example: "The lyrics of 'Control' speak about being trapped by the world, by your own demons. It fits so well for each of the women in the Witcher. Fringilla and Yen and Ciri all wrestle with villains that live inside their heads. And all these characters really ARE bigger than their bodies or the boxes that society has put them in, whether it's the Brotherhood or Nilfgaard... oh my god. This has me all thinky!" (a comment I have about "Control" by walktheeagle)
Advanced Feedback (aka quoting a line of fic, except it’s a clip or sequence of clips, to the vidder):
Identify specific visual or emotional elements in the video. You know something in the vid wowed you and you don’t know how to express it. Rewatch the vid and note a timestamp where the thing happened that made you sit up and go “OH MY GOD???” Example: “Oh my GOD at 0:35 i started screaming because of the lyrics of this song for Yen!!!  ‘Some of them want to use you / some of them want to be abused..’ and you used the shot Sabrina STABBING Yen on ‘use you.’ And THEN you put that shot right next to Yen kissing Geralt on the ‘abused’ lyric at 0:40!! It made me SCREAM because Geralt does walk himself into that connection with Yen and gets abused. That violence and softness parallel is so good.” Example: “And then at 0:41 the cymbal crash is timed to the opening of Yen’s eye!!! I liked that!!” (comments I have for the vid Sweet Dreams, a Yennefer vid by mithborien)

hi. i am renowned Playlist Maker feeba. here's my outer wilds playlist. EXTENSIVE explanation (AND OUTER WILDS + DLC SPOILERS) of every single song below the cut because i am INSANE and autisitc
Carrion: This song gave me the same feeling as reading some of the nomai text in the ruins. This song is insane to me. ["my soul," she cried "i thought you'd died / amid fumes of formaldehyde / you have been gone, for so long" i felt the lapping of an ebbing tide] <- particularly this part reads as when i explored the ruptured core...
Storm's Raging: HI blaseballers. are you emotionally destroyed? i'm emotionally destroyed. [the sun ain't coming back, the sun ain't coming back, the storm is raging]
Blank Slate: oh come on. Come On man. the universe has reset, has refreshed. [the slate, the slate, the slate is blank / and now, i know, we can't go back] come ONNNN
Didn't You Hear?: something about this is just so Nomai Music to me. the tenderness of the singer's voice. the way the instruments sound. the contents of the lyrics themselves [didn't you hear? there are signs in the sky / they say dreamers hang on / you'll wake by and by / and why are we all playing at games we cannot win? / we play because we fear we cannot play again]
In Space: an instrumental little jaunt that sits somewhere between Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and the merry wonders of the stars
Stairs to the Attic: oh boy. this is one of the more complex ones to me. the lyrics of this are self-explanatory, if you know the story of the game ([and through the door there was the attic / without old clothes, without a ceiling / everything had opened wide / into the jaws of something bigger]), but there's just something about the desperate existential voice that drives my brain nuts
Leviathan: fullstop this is about the Nomai extinction to me. or Solanum. i just. 😭😭😭 FUUUCK man. Fuck
Onset - Beyond Clouds: another instrumental.. reminds me of the pre-intelligence hearthian ancestors seeing the stars for the first time tbh
diary entry 7/15 - 7/28 + fourteen days is not enough for my screams to reach your ears: (these songs connect together) self-explanatory if you look at the lyrics tbh. [short wicks on a small stage / watch us burn, watch us burn, watch us burn / oh, you won't see me cry] [all our worlds will end / all our time is burning] also again... Hi blaseballers...
two week world: OH WHEN THE WOOOORLD LAST TWO WEEKS!!! YOU DONT GET FAR!!!! WHEN THE SUN FORMS AND BURNS OUT IN FOURTEEN DAYS!!! ALL YOU CAN HOPE TO BE!!! IS SOMEONE ELSE'S STAR!!!! IN SOMEONE ELSE'S SKY!!!! A TRILLION MILES AWAY!!!! A GOOGLEPLEX OF YEARS DOWN THE ROAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAYBE OUR DAY OUR LIGHT WILL GUIDE SOMEONE HOME!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAUAGAGAAGHAAAAAAAAA. AAAAAAAAAAA
analog: this song is just kind of cute and reminds me of the general hands-on and analog technology of the hearthians. they would put a grandfather clock in a spaceship.
nullified: Okay this is because i have an animatic for it in my head. But i picture the Hatchling accidentally breaks the warp core in a loop before they make it to the Vessel. and they have to fly their ship to the Eye themself. and. augh. starts crying
first field: another Antlers song about being a tiny piece of the universe and loving the world you were born on? uhhh yes please
Curses: blaming you for this lazuli. but also it's a goodass song
Hollow Moon (Single Version): blaming you for this lazuli (echoes of the eye edition)
Don't Quit: IT JUST REMINDS ME OF THE ASH TWIN PROJECT MUSIC? TBH???????????
elsewhere: OHHH NOWHERE TO GO!!! STUCK ON THE COAST!!!! STUCK IN THE ELSEWHERE TRYING TO FIND MY WAY HOME!!!!! FUUUCK
howling at twin moons: a looping hearthian's remorse to when the life was simple and linear and the little pleasures of the world could be enjoyed without knowing how they would be burned away. Also, haha, twin moons, like when the quantum moon orbits timber hea
Remember Me: nomai. NOMAI. I WANT TO GIVE THEM A KISS. IM CRYING INTO MY PHONE
solar eclipse (live @ the garages vs desert bus): don't wanna be forgotten. don't wanna forgive. is it so bad if i just wanna live. also the live version feels like having my whole heart ripped out thx
Intimate Immensity: the universe loves you and the universe wants a kiss
.--. --- . - - . - .-. . . : don't ask me what the title of this song is because i don't know. also it just reminds me of the village
you want it darker: THE OWLKS OH BABY I FUCKING LOVE THE OWLKS. LETS GO. the lyrical genius and Hot voice of leonard cohen combined with my special interest OOOOO ywah. Oh yeah. [you want it darker / we kill the flame]
The Sea of Tranquility: sniffling and crying and wiping my eyes on my sleeve and hiccuping and sobbing and [oh, we'll be old and weary friends / god bless, let all this never end / and how we lived / and how we know / and how we laughed together / and who alone / sings how we sang / know all we knew / and all we'll ask forever / is bring us too]
Road Movie to Berlin: i love tmbg rips open my shirt to reveal a second shirt that says i also love the narrative connotations of being trapped with your buddy (#timebuds #they should kiss)
Little Bird: reminds me of the prisoner and the hatchling meeting... in that moment you communicate more effectively than you do with anyone in the wjole game...
Sickly Suite Part One: sounds like solanum 😭😭😭😭 reminds me of her. [how are you today? / are you sure / you're still okay? / it's been a long, long time / but now you're reborn / dragged out into the light]
Sickly Suite Part Two + Three: i just like i monster. leave me alone
the twelfth trip around the sun: STARTS CRYING SO LOUD. you dont understand. the emotions i feel from this song i cant explain them thru words. i know that's literally the point of this post but i just can't do it
The Voyage: another instrumental. i apply this to all of my fixations where there's a Treacherous Journey
The Sun Hasn't Left: oh my god this is literally so time buds. this song is just straight up Gabbro you dont get it. [the sun hasn't left, the sea still has depth / the rain's still wet, try not to forget / we're not so bereft, so here's a bell that still rings true: / there's still something left, there's still something left for you]
Little Motel: again... Time Buds.... sorry i want the aliens to hold each other and sway softly
Dashboard: total vibe shift. but um. the dashboard melted but we still have the radio.. if u even care
Never Ending Math Equation: THE UNIVERSE WORKS ON A MATH EQUATION THAT NEVER EVEN EVER REALLY EVEN ENDS IN THE END. OK?
Night On The Sun: me and my homie the softboiled egg hanging out on the doubly impossible binary planet system orbiting 3 inches away from the surface of the sun
The Ground Walks with Time In A Box: gabbro again... i love you gabbo
5-4-3-2-1 Lisp Off: silly song abt being an astronaut can u tell i like modest mouse.
The Whale Song: I KNOW I AM A SCOUT I SHOULD HAVE FOUND A WAY OUT SO THAT EVERYONE COULD FIND A WAY OUT. INSTEAD OF SEEING A NEIGHBOUR OUT GOD I WISH I WOULD HAVE FOUND A WAY OUT IT WAS THE LAST TIME WE WERE HAPPY EVER HAPPY.
Gravity Rides Everything, Ocean Breathes Salty, Bury Me With It, Coyotes, We Are Between, King Rat: gabbo again... i like gabbo....
The Great Fire: WHEN THE FLAMES DIE DOWN!!! EVERYTHING IS GONE!!! WILL THERE BE FIRE!! UNDER THE ASHES STILL!!!!!! FUUUUUCK I LOVE THE OWLKS!!!!!!
Our View Of The Stars: instrumental that makes my brain explode
SUN 2 + SUN 2 (live): nomai love song... take my hand when i forget that there's a reason i'm alive, dude....
When I Was Done Dying: hatchling recounting their loops at the Eye as they have become so disconnected from the fear and feeling of death they regard it as nothing more than a momentary pain
And Yet Our Love Lives On: the way the nomai bones are still cuddling in their beds... fuck
Thank You: hatchling.
Eye of the Universe: literally just a kickass fansong
Feet-like Fins: PROTO-HEARTHIANS I LOVE YOU
still here: SOLANUM!!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
watching the stars, snowfall, PP1: just awesome instrumentals tbh
Dark Center of The Universe: gabbo
The Yawning Grave: MY WAY OUT THERE HYPERFIXATION. MY LORD HURON HYPERFIXATION. NONE OF YOU ARE SAFE I AM CONTAGIOUS. anyways. ruptured core/Stranger moment
Frozen Pines: i know this is crazy but hear me out. gabbro/time buds (and the ancient glade)
You Can Never Go Home: they can never go home! idk bro!
Space & Time: [i'm close enough to happy to say / i'm close enough to happy to say / that i won't throw my memories away]
Long Lost: YEEEESS. YEAHHHH!!! YES WOOO!!!!!! I AINT LONELY IM LONG LOST!!!!!
I Lied: this reminds me of ocs i made sorry

Note
i know imagining animatics/fanvids set to songs is a time-tested fandom tradition, and i vaguely remember that you talked about having playlists dedicated to characters, so i wanted to ask: do you have any songs in particular that inspires you to translate it into a different medium? (not necessarily for fic purposes)
like for example i recently listened to gravity by john mayer (the lyrics is so stucky-coded, which you know, ouch) and i'm vividly imagining making a stopmotion thing with paperdolls that have movable joints flat on the table, a snowy sky as the background, the bucky doll falling in slow motion (as the background streaks red) while we see the form of a chair slowly becoming visible at the bottom of the screen... and then it switches to a parallel scene where the steve doll's falling with the pieces of the triskelion floating in midair. then as he crashes into the river we see the bottom of it is the waterlogged version of the room he wakes up in the future, and as he lands on the bed it freezes him ❄ the frost spreads and spreads, until it reaches the other doll being held in its own cold prison, serving as a tomb where he slumbers ❄
...wish i knew how to outline things properly and break tasks down into manageable chunks lol, but it is very fun to think about making art! (but actually following thru ambitious projects is 😭)
I think you'll enjoy this post
Also, this post
I 👏🏻 LOVE 👏🏻 THIS 👏🏻 QUESTION 👏🏻
As far as imagining fics based on songs, you can very much see that I do that to some degree with the amount of fics I have that use song lyrics as titles, lol. But when that happens, it's not so much about hearing a song and then coming up with a fic concept based on the song, usually, I have the fic written, then a song comes on shuffle and I go Oh! Oh, This Is The Exact Vibe! This Song Has To Be The Title Now!
Your idea for the John Mayer song sounds beautiful and haunting, by the way! It perfectly fits that song! It would be truly, truly breathtaking. Just the idea in my imagination is breathtaking.
I have a vivid imagination, so usually when songs remind me of stucky and inspire me, I imagine fan edit type videos in my head. I don't know how to edit, though, and I have too many things going on to teach myself right now, so... they'll stay in my mind.
This got longer than I intended, lol
"What Was I Made For?" by Billie Eilish
I used to float, now I just fall down
I used to know but I'm not sure now
What I was made for
What was I made for?
Takin' a drive, I was an ideal
Looked so alive, turns out I'm not real
Just something you paid for
What was I made for?
'Cause I, I
I don't know how to feel
But I wanna try
I don't know how to feel
But someday, I might
Someday, I might
When did it end? All the enjoyment
I'm sad again, don't tell my boyfriend
It's not what he's made for
What was I made for?
That song vividly, vividly shows me Steve--Steve before he encounters the Winter Soldier and really begins to make a life for himself in the 21st century. Aimlessly wandering around Brookyln. Staring out into space. Frowning. Wringing his hands. Trying to figure out how he feels and who he is now that he's woken again to a new world. There isn't a war. There aren't any people he knows. What does he do? Who is he?
I mean...

"In Over My Head" by Grandson
When I was nine, I'd make believe
The good guy always caught the thief
The room went dark and I couldn't sleep
I was in over my head
At 15, I would look around
And all my friends had it figured out
They all thought it, but they never said out loud
I was in over my head
Oh, I feel this vertigo
Sick of being an optimist
I'm trying, I'm trying
But I'm in over my head
I'm in over my head
...
I thought I'd make change happen overnight
I was 20, thought I had a good hold on life
Didn't know it at the time, I was not alright
I was in over my head
Now I'm pretty sure at 26
That it isn't gonna be some little fix
The game wasn't rigged by accident
I'm in over my head
This is another Steve song. I hear this song and I see an edit showing us Steve from the playground, squaring up with bullies twice his size, Steve as a teenager, getting in trouble with Sarah, giving her gray hairs, Steve as a young adult, getting in fights in alleys, enlisting illegally, Steve in the military, standing up to his superiors, then Steve post-serum, post-war, entangled in his Captain America suit--watching the news after a mission, wading through the scene of a protest, frowning at his phone, opened to angry discussions on social media... he doesn't know what to do. He feels paralyzed.
Tumblr media
(Also, "Left Behind" by Grandson also gives me MAJOR Steve vibes. He's stubborn. He cares so deeply about topics. All of that. I see Steve getting angry in that song, I see Steve crying with that song. <3)
"Black Vultures" by Halestorm
Black vultures circling the sky
Feels like the end of the world
But it's only the beginning of it all
Forget the things that you've heard
Been a survivor since I began to crawl
I'm falling down but I'm not out
The devils at my door
I don't give in, I don't give up
I won't ever let it break me
I'm on fire, I'm a fighter
I'll forever be the last one standing
Black vultures circling the sky
Pick at the pieces
Scavengers wait for me to die
But I'm not defeated
I'm on the edge of the war
I'm holding on and hanging by a thread
I am the eye of the storm
And you haven't seen the last of me just yet
This feeds my brain the idea of Bucky lying on his back on the ground, in the middle of fucking nowhere, a meadow that's muted and dulled. The sky is overcast. There are vultures and ravens flying overhead, circling, but also perched in trees at the outside of the meadow. He's exhausted. Worn thing. Greasy. Gritty. Bloody. He gets up, turning over to crawl, and eventually finds the strength to walk. To stagger. It cuts to black. And then there's a montage of destruction in the most beautiful way as he tears through HYDRA bases. Ending them.
Tumblr media
"Devil In Me" by Halsey
I don't wanna wake it up
I don't wanna wake it up
I don't wanna wake it up
The devil in me
Gotta wake up, gotta wake up
Gotta wake up, gotta wake up
Gotta wake up, come back to life
This is simple. At least, it feels that way to me, lol. It's purely Bucky. I see Bucky screaming, sweating, hair amess, after having a bad night, coming too close to horrifying memories through dreams, and trashing their [Steve's and his] bedroom. Thrusting the nightstand onto its side. Cracking the lamp. Ripping the sheets. Needing to do something. Squeezing his fists.
Finally, finally sinking down in the corner of the room to sob. Hands to his head, trembling. He sits there for who knows how long before Steve comes in and holds him. He tells him it's okay again and again and again. It is. They can replace everything. Sometimes you just need to get it out.

"Guilty (For Your Love)" by YONKA
You tripped on love, you got cut, you were bleeding
I carried you through the night, an emergency
I want to inhale your disease
I would do anything for you, I am guilty
I get goosebumps when you're near me
You're just like the movies
I am guilty for your love
...
I had monsters in my bedroom 'til you came along
You scared them off and kissed my head
Told me that they've all gone
You taught me how to stand up to my demons, that's real love
You been messed around so much, you forgot how to trust
Had the wool pulled over your eyes, but I ripped it off
I'm the pill you needed when you thought that you were all done
This is one million percent stucky in my head. I see so much with this song. I see them in war times, I see Steve getting up in a commanding officers face, throwing his own queerness in their face when the officer comes to deliver Bucky his blue slip. Yelling. Eyes lit with a challenge. They won't discharge Captain America. They couldn't. I see Bucky throwing himself in front of Steve. Blocking him from fire, from bullets, from danger and absolute death with his body. I see Steve taking the stand in Bucky's defense against the United Nations Court. They will only convict Bucky if it's over his dead body. I see Steve and Bucky lying in bed, sheets tangled, Steve's fingers tracing Bucky's jaw, his sharp cheekbones... yeah.
Tumblr media
"Are You Really Okay?" by Sleep Token
Are you really okay?
You woke me up one night
Dripping crimson on the carpet
I saw it in your eyes
Cutting deeper than the scars could run
And don't you know
I can see it in you even now
And don't you know
I want to help you but I don't know how
And are you really okay? Yeah, yeah
Are you really okay?
And I, I cannot fix your wounds this time
But I, I don't believe you when you tell me you are fine
Please don't hurt yourself again
Just please don't hurt yourself again, oh
This song, depending on the mood I'm in when it comes on, flips back and forth between coming from Bucky's point of view, about Steve, or Steve's point of view about Bucky.
It's mostly the same either way, I see Bucky or Steve filling the role of the narrator in the song--waking up to see their partner bleeding, shaking, incoherent, and hurting. They're dazed. So hurt that they have a thousand yard stare and can't totally focus. The rest of the night is spent on the balcony of their apartment. Smoking a cigarette despite supposedly having quit, sharing it between them silently. When they slide back into bed at dawn, they're wrapped up so entirely in each other.

I hope you enjoyed my rambles, lol

Here's the full animation, complete after about 4ish weeks
I spent almost every in the studio trying to finish this and I did one all-nighter just to render it
It is definitely one of my proudest animations and I'm more than happy with the way it turned out and that I actually managed to finish it considering how big the animation was in comparison to the other animations I've created
When making this animation, which really emphasised the validation of my process of making animatics, I learnt that colouring/inking the animation can take just as long as trying to animate in TVPaint and that is all thanks to the pixilation in TVPaint's canvas'
The pixilation makes it really annoying to select the areas you need coloured/inked and, even if you increase the selection depth, if it thicker than the lineart, it will select the whole canvas
I say it every time and I'll say it again, TVPaint would be so much better if it was, at basis the same, but had passive features that are to today's standard of animation software
I've never programmed a software so I don't know how difficult it is, but it's an industry software, the developers can afford to make those updates >:(
The camera movements, timing, and putting all the scenes together was all done in after effects and to be honest, I was working off of muscle memory with after effects
For the most part, it's one of adobes not-as-complicated software which was why it was simple enough for me to remember how to do what I wanted to do for this animation; can't stress enough how important those camera movements are and how much it adds to the animation
There were two parts to the sound, to edit the sound where I needed to (making the bear running sound from editing the sound of a horse galloping), I used audacity which I would say I am well versed in using because I use it all the time
To put the sounds in the animation and have them play at the right times, I used premiere pro, another of adobes software's that aren't too unnecessarily complex to use, again allowing muscle memory to kick in to do what I needed to do
The music, which isn't copyright free, is 'Since U Asked' by Swim Good Now and I thought it fit the scene perfectly in my opinion

This is my final for my Storyboard class back in 2018 (I was wrong on the year on the last post.) This assignment had us make an original story with sounds effects, voice acting and movement; effectively making an animatic.
My story was simple and I wanted to experiment with non-human characters and “fantasy.”
This was my second me ever making an animatic and It is clear that I was still very new to it. The timing is some shots need better build up, and the sound needs better pitching. Though it was my first time doing both these things I learned a lot and it can be seen in my future projects. I was really naïve and probably a little too ignorant when I made this (I was 18 y/o haha of course I was,) and I refused to touchh storyboard pro. These professional programs were very intimating for me as by then I had only touched Painttool.sai and Photoshop. So for my midterm and final I used a combination of my drawing programs to draw out the shots and characters and then passed it over to SbP to get the timing for shots. The audio was cut and spliced in a sound program that I do not remember (I used Reaper in future works) and then I edited the pitch of it on SbP.
For what I remember a good score on this class, and my Prof. was happy with my work. She did have her critiques, but I remember it was very light and she she said it was passable lol.
Anyways, enjoy
EDIT: Adding the character exploration sketches

So, I’ve just come up with an idea for The Owl House Fandom 🧙‍♀️🦉🔮🌟…..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So with the premiere of the 1st part of season 3 of The Owl House quickly approaching (airing way late in my time where I’m from - on a Sunday no less) I figured I propose a suggestion to the fandom… By giving thanks to Dana and the crew for all their hard work, especially on this season!
And while I’m not sure if anybody else has or is going to use this idea before me (I mean it was worth the shot! I feel like just about any fandom would do that), I was thinking about doing some sort of massive fandom big bang; making and creating fanart, animations/animatics, AMV’s/edits etc You name it!
The idea came to mind after lurking around in the Amphibia fandom (I like to check into the fandom every once in a while) then I remembered that since Amphibia ended months ago, the fandom would joke around making tweets about season 4 happening and creating fake promos and fan made episode animations/animatics/storyboards for like a couple of weeks (even creator Matt Braly liked some of the stuff he saw from fans and had to check in with the fandom about it - You had to be there!)
I like to think of this as a tribute to Dana and her crew for giving us the most of season 3 has to offer, and while we’re concerned of how the final season would play out as a 3 part near hour long special, I trust Dana and her team would be able to fill in everything that’s needed, flaws and all.
As a fandom, I think we can all come to an agreement that since Disney decided to be a bunch of assholes for cutting the rest of season 3 and cancelling the show entirely for not “fitting into their brand” (whatever the hell that’s supposed to mean?!) that they’re now officially on - what I like to call - “Massive Corporate Entertainment Company Hit List for Screwing Animation Fans Over” officially considering Disney public enemy No. 1 (but now that spot seems to go over to Warner Brothers/Discovery, after certain recent events - also don’t ask me on the title, I just randomly made that on the fly so it was the first thing that popped into my head - sorry if that sounds cringe 😬)
Which is why I think starting around the day of the premiere for season 3, let’s get the show trending on social media to show tremendous support for the owl crew, cuz lord knows they deserve the love for creating an amazing show after everything they’ve went through with Disney’s higher ups shady ass-hattery that goes on there, the best we can do is support Dana and the team for the hard work, appreciate and make the most of what we have for the final season!
There’s probably a few bits and bobs I felt that are missing (or just the whole idea of some fandom big bang is already somewhat a common thing here and in other fandom spaces IDK) but feel free to share some ideas here! I’d love to see some ideas to shared around this fandom!
Personally, I love seeing fanart, but you know what I wanna see more of? Fan made “episode” animations/animatics/storyboards of season 3, y’know since Disney thought that cutting season 3 was necessary, why not make make some fan made “episodes” to fill in the gaps that would’ve been a full season (especially once the first part is aired and from what I’ve heard we go into a 3 month hiatus until the next part, which oof, I thought the Steven Universe fandom has a rough hiatus, but this 😳) - whether it’s from fan made theories, headcanons or just something that’s canon adjacent - I think it would’ve been really fun and would really mend the hole in the fandom’s heart once the show’s over (honestly I kinda miss the chaotic energy from the fandom when Amphibia ended and I really wanted to have fun with The Owl House, all in good fun!).
I hope this idea sticks to the fandom because I would love for this post to boost up and garner everyone’s interest! Again, if you like this, feel free to share your ideas here!
Also of course, please support the show through legal means through Disney +, or more likely, just pirate the show and give Dana the crew some support and kind messages! Also, don’t share any spoilers/leaks and PLEASE tag them once they’re aired, especially to those that are not in the US!

Downside Ch. 1
Note: This was originally posted on Robindraw’s AO3. I edited the first chapter and wrote chapter 2 and now wish to finish the rest of the story based on Robin’s notes. This is not my story, it’s HERS. I just have the notes and the story and am writing it. This was before Janus’ name reveal so I’m keeping it Clyde for the story for now.
There is also an animatic Robin made of this AU you can watch
here.  Summary:
Clyde (Deceit) was a relatively normal teen who lived with his parents and his brother until he discovered that he has powers, but they have a price.... You can read here how Deceit became one of the most dangerous people on the planet, ....but could there be people who can stop him? And what does his family think?
Oh crap... One on the face again? And you can see it more than the others too. How many does he have now? 15… 16 maybe? At least most of them can be covered with a shirt, but the ones on the face? Those could become a real problem.
But he had to use it. If Ms. Mayer knew he was the one who took the money out of the register? She would have fired him and he needs the money too much for that to happen.
Clyde stood in front of his whole body mirror. He was wearing an old Disney shirt of his, which he would never admit to anyone he still had, but he just couldn't let it go. Used socks and T-shirts were spread around his relatively dimly lit room, still lying in the same position he had thrown them there from the days before. The sound of a terrarium, with his favorite little snek buddy Terrence in it, filled the thick air, breaking the silence.
The 17-year-old looked at his face in the mirror with a disgruntled frown. He had to figure out a way to hide them somehow. Not that they didn't look cool but other people would start to ask questions that he can't even answer himself.
A sudden knock on his door threw him out of his thoughts. Without waiting for an answer, his little brother stormed into his mess of a room.
“Dinner's ready!’’
He turned out of reflex towards the sound but remembered quickly why that would be a terrible idea. He ducked his head down quickly so that his bangs would cover a little of his face and got down on his knees, pretending as if he was cleaning his socks off of the floor. But it was no use. The curious kid had already had a glimpse of what he was trying to hide.
“What's that on your face?”
“For f**ks sake, Virgil, if you don't want your head ripped off you better stop storming into my room like that.”
It threw him off a little that it was already time for dinner. His parents were apparently home early today, great.
While he was throwing socks under his bed, the 10-year-old approached him.
“What? Do you care about me seeing your dirty socks all of a sudden? That’s a first. But seriously I think you have, like, dirt on your cheek or something.”
Bending down, Virgil tried to get a glimpse of his brother’s face but he kept turning more and more to the side so he couldn't see.
Suddenly a sock went soaring and made a landing right on Virgil’s face. He stumbled back a little and ripped the stinking object off while his brother stood up from the ground.
“Ewww, gross! You’re disgusting!”
“And you're a pussy.”
They taller boy tried to go around the right side of the smaller boy while having his head turned so that Virgil couldn't see the three scales on his left cheek, but was stopped by a hand gripping his arm and attempting to pull him back.
“Look at me!”
“Let go or I'll make you.”
“Not until you show me! I wanna see!”
Getting irritated with him he barked out an “Okay!” before he turned his head. The side of his face he was trying to keep hidden was in full view of his little annoyance who still clung to his right arm.
Virgil's eyes widened in shock.
“Woooah. Are those scales?! That looks so cool! Are they real?”
Clyde's face showed maybe a second of surprise on his face but masked it quickly with a confident grin.
“Are they real? Of course not. This is my Halloween costume. Well, an idea for it.”
Virgil's furrowed his eyebrows.
“You're lying.”
“Wha- Me? Never!”
He got down to his younger brothers eye-level.
“Virgil, I would never ever lie to you, little brother.”
Virgil rolled his eyes.
“That's a gigantic lie. You told me yesterday that you didn't eat my pudding, even though you were still holding it!” Clyde couldn't help but chuckle a little at that memory. “So just tell me the truth. I know when you're lying.”
Clyde's face darkened a little, his smile fluttering. He was thinking about using his powers on his brother but considering that using his powers caused this dilemma in the first place... he chose to tell the truth.
“I- ok, you have to swear to not to tell our parents or I will rip you into pieces.” Virgil straightened his back and stared wistfully into his brother's eyes. “I have these scales because of my superpowers.”
The smaller boy's shoulders went down, disbelief and disappointment in his eyes.
“You still pretend like I'm an idiot. You, brother, you're an ass.”
With these words he left out of the door, leaving a smirking Clyde behind.
Sometimes the truth is the best lie to hide behind.
The young man got up and his eyes fell again to his mirror. Through it, he could see the terrarium with his snake resting inside. He turned and walked around his bed. He looked into the glass box, to see a curled up Terrence on a stick with his beautiful light yellow scales.
He had a soft smile on his face before he shuddered and his eyes showed maybe something akin to… worry.
Maybe he shouldn't use his powers as much anymore. What if he-
No. No, no, why was he afraid? It's not like that's ever going to happen.

(How I Learned) How To Read Irken: A Guide
Tumblr media
(Pictured: Us....) (From @zimgay ‘s lovely animatic!)
Okay, I’m finally making this post.
If you’ve been following me for a while, you might have caught on that I can read Irken. When I started, I was completely confused over wether or not I was teaching myself correctly, how long it’d take, et cetera. But I’ve finally hashed it out for myself, and I thought:
Why not make a guide for anyone else who wants to learn but has no idea where to start?
So that’s what I’m doing. Some disclaimers, though:
- This is what worked for me. It may or may not work for you, I’m not sure. I think it’s a pretty good method, though.
- Reading Irken and Writing Irken are two different skillsets. I’m gonna show you how to do both, but don’t worry if you’re better at one than the other.
- This will probably take a while of daily (or near-daily) practice to learn. It’s not impossible, it’s not super challenging, but it’s not super easy, especially if you have memory problems like I do. (For context: I started in September. But I also have a really shitty memory so, like. It might take less time for you.)
Okay! Let’s do this!
First off, you’d probably do well downloading the Irken font for practice purposes. Messing around with it and typing in it is fun, and can help!
You’ll also need a notebook. It’s not required, but having it all in one place is super convenient. (And, if it’s tiny enough, you can carry it around whenever, and also have it on hand to whip out at cons.)
The first thing I did was write each individual letter over and over and over again. This is what’s at the start of my notebook, and writing the letters over and over helped me remember which were which. I also had to focus pretty hard on what letter this actually was, this is tedious as hell but it’s not something you can do mindlessly.
Tumblr media
(Pictured: Normal levels of interest in a show.)
This is what my notebook looks like. Don’t worry about those simplified versions of the letters yet, but you’re gonna wanna leave room for them. Don’t worry about learning simplified/handwritten until later, it helps recognition if you really have to focus on actually drawing the letters, at first.
(And yes, I know my pen is really smudgy. And that my H’s suck.)
After this, three letter words are your friend. Pick just, common three letter words you know, and write them down a lot. I have just, the Irken for “THE” written in the margins of my class notebooks a TON. Once you feel like you can remember that word well, go onto another 3 letter word with a different set of letters. Recognition = good, so pick something you like, use all the time.
While I was doing this, I tried to string together Irken letters I knew into like, coherent phrases. I was very bad at this at first. Acronyms are your friend here, lmao. (I don’t think I can count the number of times I’ve written ‘u r a qt pie’ in my notebooks.) It doesn’t matter what you write, just that it makes coherent sense.
There are gonna be some uncommon letters that are gonna be hard to practice, like W and Z, off the top of my head. For Z, that was easy. I just wrote ZIM over and over and over. For W... I used UWU. You laugh now, but the absurdity of it cements that I will always recognize those two letters.
Four letter words are also good. (Please, absolutely write “FUCK” over and over in order to remember letters. I encourage it.)
There is also the absolute cuntwaffles. Y’know how in English, b, p, d, g, all look kinda the same? Yeah, Irken has that too.
Tumblr media
(Pictured: Head hurting juice.)
The I and Z don’t look that similar now, but good luck without a translation guide. By this point, you should have memorized a good chunk of the Irken alphabet, and be able to recognize some others when you see them. If you’ve been writing common three- or four-letter words, it’s likely you’ve been using letters very common in the English language. Which brings us to our next stage, and the actual fun part:
READING!
You’re gonna want a translation guide on hand in these early stages, you will need it. The main goal of this stage is to read anything in Irken you can get your hands on- but start small! Fanart with Irken in it was a godsend to me. It’s not that long, so it’s not overwhelming. I did need to look up some letters at the beginning, and I read really slowly, but that’ll change quickly if you keep up with it! The specific fanarts I used are:
@inimoose ‘s The Last Irken comic, specifically chapter one: part one, and chapter two: part two have a lot of Irken. But I’d recommend reading the whole comic; it’s good!
@paketdimensioncomic ‘s page of lore for their comic! Spoilers, though. Again, I’d recommend reading through the whole comic, because it’s just that good.
@xryn-art ‘s Linguistic Au’s first comic has a good chunk of Irken! The other comics do have some, but it’s all translated. Still good practice, though, if you wanna... read them......... ;) ;) ;)
Yes, this segment was partially a way for me to plug my favorite fan-artists, (or at least the ones that use Irken,) sue me. It’s my guide and I make the rules here.
(I am very sorry if I bothered any of you by @’ing you.)
But just some sources isn’t enough, so I introduce you to browser fonts. And changing yours to Irken.
It will not effect everything in your browser, and it can be toggled on and off, so don’t worry. If you really want, you can download a separate browser to change the font of, and leave your normal one be. It’d be convenient if you could, since having your browser font be Irken is inconvenient if you need to use Wikipedia, like, ever.
Here’s a guide for that, for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer for some reason. You’ll see four options to change, I just changed all of them. Not every page is going to have Irken on it, though. For me, Wikipedia is all in Irken, and so is TV Tropes. And some Tumblr blogs (PAKet Dimension’s is one, just in case you need a reason to go back there ;)) But it might be different for you.
Whatever it is, now you have a nice way to practice. I read Wikipedia articles on stuff I already knew about (so I wasn’t completely lost and could figure out what letters I didn’t know were from context clues,) but not a page I’ve read before in recent memory- you might just be recalling what the page said, instead of actually reading it.
And about the absolute cuntwaffle letters: yes, this will help you in recognizing which are which. Seeing the letters in context is always going to be much more helpful than just, a bunch of meaningless squiggles floating in the void.
At this point, I personally am much better at reading than writing Irken. It’s one thing to know a letter when you see it, and another to recall it and write it down from memory. Right now, I’m trying to write song lyrics and dumb little phrases in Irken, to improve my writing skills. Again, nothing too long, don’t overwhelm yourself. This sounds stupid, but Vines are good. When I don’t remember a letter, I just leave it blank and look it up after I’m done.
Another thing that helps is having a friend to practice with, or someone to just give you Irken phrases for you to translate.
Once you’re around this stage, you can try to learn simplified/handwritten Irken. You can also try to learn it before this, I started it around when I started reading fanart for practice, it’s up to you. This guide is a good starting point, but you don’t have to follow it exactly. This is your handwriting, do what feels natural for you!
(Also, don’t even worry about speedwrite Irken. That has no place in this holy land and frankly I am scared of it.)
And that’s... pretty much it! Most of the process is just... practicing a lot.
If this post does well, I might make a server for people who wanna learn Irken to practice together and stuff. It all depends if anyone even wants to learn Irken.
EDIT: Well, guess what I ended up making just the next day. Here’s the post for the server, and please read the joining rules.
Also, if you wanna learn Irken numbers, here you go. But start with letters first, worry about numbers later. These are never used, aren’t even in the Irken font, and three of them look a lot like those cuntwaffle Irken letters.
Anyway I just really hope this guide helps someone out. If you do use it, tell me! And have fun learning Irken!! It really is just, a blast to do honestly.

Home Movies #23: “History” | March 10, 2002 - 10:00 PM | S02E10
Oh good lord, that was TERRIBLE. Sorry, but that's my least favorite HM episode ever. It was the first to actually dedicate more screen time to Brendan's movie than the real world (about a 3:1 ratio or so), which isn't a bad idea, but the movie wasn't funny enough to hold up that much time. Brendan's films work best when they're short segments that hold up the rest of the episode, not the other way around. There wasn't much plot, no screen time for the regulars (though McGuirk and Paula did get in a good line or two), and Brendan's movie was jarringly overproduced. Did anybody else here notice that it was full of studio caliber special effects? There were enormous backdrops and laser effects and editing which is damn near well impossible without professional equipment. It didn't jive with the under budget crappy look of most of Brendan's films. Anyway, just a way boring episode overall, with a paper-thin premise and sub-par humor. I don't know if it was just that I was watching Denis Leary's "The Job" beforehand (which happens to be the best and funniest show on television right now), but this episode just didn't seem up to HM standards. I give it a D.
-RandomGuy, Toonzone message boards
It’s important, I guess, to remember just how much certain Home Movies fans hated this episode. In fact, if you listen to the commentary the animators do over the animatics for this episode, they actually shout out a few specific Toonzone members. Personally, I remember always loving this one, and I consider this to be an all-time classic on the level of The Party. History is mostly devoted to Brendan’s film Starboy and the Captain of Outer Space, which we saw glimpses of in the episode Impressions. The real-life drama of Brendan’s life has far less screentime than the actual movie, ironically making what’s actually important (Brendan failing school) the B-story and what’s less important (Brendan’s stupid movies) the A-story. This episode is basically like living in Brendan’s head. Also, Brendon not paying attention in school legitimately makes his movie worse: It’s full of distracting historical inaccuracies. It’s wonderful. The ending that seems like it’s going to lead up tot he Bart Gets an F finale where the lil guy pulls it out at the very end is subverted here, with Mr. Lynch gleefully assigning Brendan his 0% F grade on the test.
This episode is also notable for the use of the insane-sounding but also weirdly catchy compliment song, the music for which you can hear softly in the background of a couple scenes earlier in the season. It’s birthday music in The Party, and I think it’s coming out of a TV in one of the scenes where Brendan and Paula are on the couch together. It’s a song about how you can get people to do what you want by complimenting them. This is how Brendan defeats the kitty-cat man played by Duane, who also has his own bitchin’ song. Goddamn, the music in this show easily laps it’s musical-in-nature contemporary Brak Show. Hell, I’d argue that the music on this show is better than anything The Simpsons ever did. You absolutely gotta hand it to ‘em. You simply must.

One thing that always bothered me about the Class Trip episode of Home Movies is that it seemed beyond suspension of disbelief that a school would go to a hotel for a field trip. Like too much of a plot convenience of a good shooting location for the kids. Then I eventually met someone who did actually go on a school field trip to a hotel. In high school no less! So I gotta give it to Brendon and co on this one.
Yeah, I had this same thought! But I figured that lame field trips like this must exist. I myself can only remember a very small number of field trips I ever had, and I’m guessing that’s at the expense of several insanely forgettable ones. But getting kids used to the idea of boring places where adults work does seem like a sorta valuable lesson. I guess.

thanks :(

The premise of Brenden wanting to film in a real location when the show makes you accept that Brenden has to ability to create insanely elaborate and detailed sets for his movies at home is certainly a trip and a half. I wonder if they talk about that in a commentary track.
Yeah, how boring can you get? All the kid had to do was clean up his mom’s bedroom and that’d pass for a hotel room easily. This episode has tiny flourishes that seem impossible for the kids to replicate; the backgrounds and stuff all seem handmade, and the titles seem a tad elaborate for what they could pull off. I guess Brendan got a macbook from his rich dad.
There is one bit where Duane is flying off in a space ship and it speeds off in warp speed, which causes the ship to stretch unnaturally in a way that I have no idea how the kids would do that. It’s kinda blink-and-you-miss-it, and happens just as the scene is ending. I guess they just like the dramatic flourish as the scene ends. I guess as long as you don’t cut to the kids behind the camera calling “cut” it’s relatively easy to just let stuff like that pass you by. Maybe RandomGuy has a point.

omegafrisk is om-over-frisk, apologies, and unreleased stuff
i want to preface this by saying that every time i admit to a mistake i get people trying to minimise it. if you’re getting ready to do that, please don’t. it makes me feel terrible. even if you don’t agree with how i feel, i violated my own morals, and that means a lot to me!
so, omegafrisk is definitely over. it’s partially that i was in a bad bad place when i started this comic and it’s always gonna be tied to that for me, partially that i’ve just become a much better writer since then and i’d have to reboot the whole thing to be satisfied with it, and partially just that i’m not into undertale enough to make a whole comic anymore.
and speaking of being in a bad place: letting that bleed through into my writing is what i want to apologise for. i’ve come to realise i was a victim of grooming when i started this comic (and as i continued to write it). it messed me up, and i wrote messed up stuff because i just didn’t know better. the child gore, the flippant use of suicide, the extremely inappropriate jokes about kids, probably other stuff i don’t remember - it all disgusts me now. i’m so sorry i put that out into the world and that it took me so long to address it.
i thought about password protecting this blog and shutting it down altogether, but i’ve decided i won’t do that. after wrestling with tumblr a bit i think i’ve deleted  the worst stuff, but if you think there’s anything else i should get rid of please bring it to my attention through IM, or through the submit box if you’re shy (you can submit anonymously if you log out).
again, don’t defend me. if you don’t agree keep it to yourself. i will block you if you try to minimise this.
heavy stuff out of the way, onto the content, which i’m sure most of you are much more interested in.
ABOUT THE STORY
i thought about releasing my entire plot outline, but... it sucks. that thing predates mad mew mew. it’s terrible. there’s barely even any detail. whatever you’ve come up with yourself is more interesting.
i do have plenty of stuff to share though! this summary got long as hell, so the rest is going under a cut.
since it’s so long, i’ll put the one thing i am mostly happy with here (obviously sui/child death implications):
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1modE5IQiwNIwRPHBBkwADAEbPttbpIzJBWFaBZlvYHY/edit?usp=sharing
this is the script for an ask i was planning for ages. first written in 2016 apparently?? with the help of the fantastic emouse. it’s a look on what was going on in the original timeline while frisk and chara were off gallivanting through spacetime.
the one thing i’m not pleased with is i don’t think it’s totally ic for flowey to start resetting again. i left it in though ‘cause i don’t feel like updating it.
another thing i’ll leave you is the playlist of instrumental themes i collected for chara and frisk, which i don’t think i ever released. this must also be from about 2016.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVSr-S6q61wCF5IFuBO2Ipl0Nb-u3r4xo
it starts out with frisk’s themes, life/universe and high score are shared themes, and after that chara’s themes begin.
summaries of the rest of the event and the ending under the cut!
A WRINKLE IN TIME
i can at least summarise the rest of the event i had planned. mettaton was about to turn the tables on everyone by having a camera crew burst through the ceiling (which were gonna be some people’s cameo’d ocs). he’d broadcast the debate over who got the soul live to try and bully everyone into giving him it. he had some fair points - he’s the only one of them that’s literally indestructible (at least to monsters and small children) - but both asgore and undyne were determined that they would be the ones to take it.
flowey would then pop up with his own plan. he’d kill everyone in the room except for charadyne (and mettaton just because, again, indestructible to magic). it would’ve been a cool little animation that scrolled past everyone’s shocked faces as bullets appeared behind them with that jarring sound effect they have in game, then cut to black with a cacophony of them all turning to dust.
this was all to force charadyne to load their save. he thought they’d be able to load to before undyne absorbed chara’s soul, which would be impossible as that moment would’ve been undyne’s first save point. (i’m only now realising the hole in this - surely he would’ve known that after his fusion with chara? but wait, he didn’t know about resets until he was revived, can beasts just not save? fucking undertale man)
regardless, chara and undyne would try to reset to, in chara’s words, “the last time you were... filled with... determination”. i wanted to do an animatic to half of [this song]. sweet chimes as undyne rifles back through her memories for that moment, building up to her getting ready - a blast of sound as it rips the timeline to shreds.
chara’s soul is so fragmented, only exacerbated by being in a foreign timeline, that they can’t reset properly. i was thinking of styling the catastrophic glitch that resulted after an undertale corruption because those things scare the shit out of me and also can be fucking hilarious. love me some comedic horror.
chara and undyne would eventually figure out they had to leave the timeline and manually straighten it out. because it was knotted. it was wr. there was a wrinkle. in the timeline. a wrinkle in time. because the event is called. it’s c. a wrinkle in time
that’s where i was hazy on details - you can see just how much was made up as i went along. somehow, they’d be separated, and undyne would have left enough dt in chara’s soul that they’d be able to go down to the human village and yoink some souls from the mausoleum there. (i had worldbuilding stuff around that - the soul jars used in the underground are based off what humans use for burial in general. burying your body in a grave = having your soul stored in a mausoleum. there’d also be equivalents to cremation and such)
i hadn’t really thought much about that - the actual idea was that chara would find their old house and we’d get a flashback sequence about their backstory (eugh, glad i didn’t get around to that). and then, idk, the mausoleum would be empty or something? i didn’t think about what might happen if they were actually able to get all those souls. that is to say, i didn’t think about the story implications - i totally thought about chara becoming a cool shapeshifting rainbow beast because i’m like that.
Tumblr media
THE ENDING
rest assured there was gonna be a happy ending. chara and frisk were gonna have a big cool battle bursting through various timelines where frisk tried to talk chara down and chara tried to kick frisk’s ass. at the end, frisk would’ve given up and let chara kill them. but chara wouldn’t have been able to. as viciously as they attacked, they could only do a single point of damage - they and frisk are both made of magic now, and magic works on emotion, and chara cannot truly hate frisk enough to end their life.
so they would’ve made up, broken the barrier in their original timeline together, and lived happily ever after with no more resets.
i remember daydreaming an animatic of the two of them trying to break the barrier, stumbling a few times and gradually achieving synchrony, to [this song].
you might notice i don’t mention flowey here. i was kind of struggling to figure out what to do with everyone else in regards to like, actual methods of character development. i had some ideas about chara bringing wrinkle-in-time flowey along with them on their adventures and him somehow getting his memories spliced with og-timeline flowey’s near the end but didn’t really think them through.
here’s a shittily-sketched old concept of what i might’ve done with him though:
Tumblr media
not exactly my most beautiful work but it’s all you’re getting. it’s just visual notes, so i didn’t think it through much.
i daydreamed a lot about a cute ending animatic to [this song]. i don’t remember my thoughts well enough to summarise, but i hope you can come up with something cute yourselves!
aaand that’s all for this post. thanks for reading!

I just watch that clip “Into The Unknown” from Frozen 2 and am having so many ideas... (Also this is a really great song, and it’s probably gonna get stuck in my head...)
Soooo... an(other) AU wherein Luna is sorta like Elsa, born with magic powers that nobody understands and has come to fear them. Lets say that she eventually got her powers under control and has come to be accepted by her people as their Oracle and Healer. She and her brother have already had their little adventure, and are ready to settle into happily ever after...
Except, lately Luna has been hearing this voice. Well not a voice exactly, but she can feel something calling out to her, urging her to follow it to it’s source. And as her powers grow stronger, this strange siren call grows louder and harder to ignore...
Meanwhile, far across the sea in the now defunct Kingdom of Lucis...
Lucis was a kingdom of magic, but long ago something happened that ended with the capital Insomnia becoming cut off from the world, hidden behind a strange wall of mist. And with the capital and with it the Crystal (wihch is said to be the source of all magic on Eos) gone magic seemed to disappear from the world...
In Insomnia itself, magic still exists, but over the generations their power has begun waning. Until Noctis is born. Noctis has power beyond anything seen since the great Kings and Queens of yore. It’s too bad hardly anyone remembers how to wield such power. Regis is very concerned for his son, that kind of power could consume Noctis entirely. Not to mention there’s no telling what kind of fate the gods must have in store for him...
Soon enough, Noctis also starts hearing a strange voice calling out to him. He’s been warned against listening to strange voices no on else can hear... but he can’t help himself. It call to him, pleading him to follow. Where or why? He doesn’t know, all he knows is that whatever this is, it lies beyond the Wall.
One day the call is so strong that neither can ignore it, and in trying to reach out to it, Luna inadvertently sets off a chain reaction and awakens the Glacian from her slumber, while Noct finds himself standing before the Crystal having also set off a chain reaction and nearly brings the Citadel crashing down in on itself.
Luna, not knowing what to do to after unleashing Shiva unto the unsuspecting  world, but desperate to set things right, sets off on a new journey. Guided by the mysterious Gentiana (heh) she makes for Lucis, hoping that there she will find the answers shes been seeking her whole life.
Noct knows there’s something out there beyond the Wall and he needs to go. He needs to find out what ever this thing that’s calling truly is. He needs to finds out more about this power he possesses. His father forbids it, no one can venture beyond the wall anyway, it’s impossible.
Noct sneaks out anyway, accompanied by his friends, who are definitely not letting him go off to do something potentially stupid and/or dangerous on his own! Seeing is believing, and when the Mist (which have blocked them off for generations) parts for Noctis, well Ignis, Gladio and Prompto can’t help but accept that maybe he might be on to something here...
As Luna and Noctis’s paths lead them closer to one another, the call gets stronger and stronger. Except, now it’s begining to sound like an actual voice. Now it’s also accompanied by vivid dreams, sometimes even visions while they’re awake. And as it grows stronger and clearer, they make an incredible discovery.
It’s not just some strange siren call of magic... There’s a person behind it!
Noct: “A girl?” Luna: “A boy?”
Neither understand it. But they’re desperate to meet. To find out why they’ve been calling out to each other. Why this is happening. “Who are you?” and “Are you real?” are some of the biggest questions on their minds...
...
This kinda like a script for an animatic tha I have in my head right now and would really like to make, maybe, one day... I really wish I new how to properly edit music or at least get my hands on “Into The Unknown” but sung as a duet between a girl and boy... (Probably would be easier to visual if you listen to the song while reading this, but it’s hard to explain this kind of thing with words...)
Anyway... So picture Noct and Luna being woken up by a mysterious voice. Throughout the scene it appears as though they’re talking to one another, sometimes looking directly at the other, but at any given moment, only one of them ever appears on screen. It seamlessly shifts from one to the other, for instance: having Luna sing her part then as she turn it shifts to Noctis, hundreds of miles away, singing his part as if in answer, and then as he passes through a doorway (or something) we’re back to Luna...
...
Ah ah oh oh oh Ah ah oh oh oh oh oh oh Luna: I can hear you but I won't. Some look for trouble while others don't Noctis: There's a thousand reasons I should go about my day. And ignore your whispers which I wish would go away, oh oh oh
Ah ah oh oh
Luna: Oh oh
Ah ah oh oh Noctis: You're not a voice You're just a ringing in my ear Luna: And if I heard you, which I don't I'm spoken for I fear Noctis: Everyone I've ever loved is here within these walls I'm sorry, secret siren, but I'm blocking out your calls Luna: I've had my adventure, I don't need something new I'm afraid of what I'm risking if I follow you Noctis: Into the unknown Luna: Into the unknown Both: Into the unknown!
Ah ah oh oh Ah ah oh oh oh oh Noctis: What do you want? 'Cause you've been keeping me awake Luna: Are you here to distract me so I make a big mistake?
(Picture Noctis looking out a window, placing his hand on the glass...) Noctis: Or are you someone out there who's a little bit like me? (The reflection changes into Luna, and our perspective is flipped, now outside a window looking in) Luna: Who knows deep down I'm not where I'm meant to be? Luna: Every day's a little harder as I feel my power grow Noctis: Don't you know there's part of me that longs to go… Noctis: Into the unknown? Luna: Into the unknown Both: Into the unknown!
Ah ah oh oh Ah ah oh oh (Magic swirls around them, and every time is moves in front of the camera we switch back and forth between the pair.) Noctis: Oh, oh oh, Are you out there? Luna: Do you know me? Noctis: Can you feel me? Luna: Can you show me?
(As magic continues swirling, they’re looking directly at the empty space where the other would be, moving together, and begin reaching out for the other) Luna: Ah ah oh oh Noctis: Ah ah oh oh Luna: Ah ah oh oh Noctis: Ah ah oh oh Both: Oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh Oh oh oh oh (They take off running, both appear to be chasing after something unseen, implied to be each other, as trees/pillars pass in front of the camera we switch from Noct to Luna) Noctis: Where are you going? Luna: Don't leave me alone! Both: How do I follow you... Into the unknown? (These last few lines begin with Luna standing at the edge of a cliff, looking out over Tenenbrae, the full moon above her and her magic shining all around her. Then ends with Noct in the same position but in the throne room in Insomnia, with the crystal shining above him instead of the moon.)

Week 17 – Alex – I Told You I’d See You Later
My previous post was a little anti-climactic if you ask me, and I didn’t get to recap what I did so here we gooo.
----------------------FIRST, MAJOR DISCLAIMER---------------
As you can see, this post is pretty dang long, so I’m just gonna put evaluation stuff for the class here first, and if you feel like reading on afterward that’s cool, but it’s just personal reflections and final send-off stuff.
So, shockingly, I was one of the main contributors to the rough animation which you can see in the animatic, and can track the progress of throughout this blog’s history. I finished 15 roughed shots in total. I also have 8 shots concurrently blocked (in other words, partial progress,) and 2 shots unstarted.       I also made the 3D environment models used for reference in making the backgrounds, as well as handling the editing side (video composition, timing, and sound edits) for the animatic up to this point.
Next, I worked closely with Sophia and our sound mixer Tim to get the voice actresses recorded, their clips edited, and finally integrated into the film. And also, while this hasn’t made it into the animatic yet, I have been creating some original sound design elements as well. Here’s a sample of some:
youtube
I’m focusing mostly on the characters’ Pua powers and transformations right now, and some sludge sounds. And in hand with that, I also did the voice clips/sound effects for the Sludge Monster. Aaand that’s pretty much it from me this semester! Super excited to keep up the work in the weeks to come! If you’re not sticking till the end of the post, then thanks for an awesome class, and awesome semester!
------------------ The Feels Side of the Post -----------------
                                       The Pua Warriors Experience
When I first heard about Pua Warriors, I thought the idea sounded awesome: Magical girls set in Hawai'i using flower powers and sparkles to save the day? Yeah I’m down for that. It felt… familiar to me, I suppose. But at the time I still knew relatively little about the characters, the story, and only had a vague idea of their designs.
As time went on and the Capstone application deadline was approaching, I felt like I was a bit stuck, with the exhaustion of working on Midnight Showing holding me on one side, and having only a vague outline of a plot for my own film idea on the other. And with no crew to speak of, the decision not to make a Capstone of my own was … difficult… one of the most difficult in my time at ACM. Cause in my mind (at the time at least,) not making “your own” Capstone project felt like a failure somehow. But this whole Pua Warriors thing was sounding pretty nice, and I already knew everyone working on it. So I decided life’s better together, and far be it from me to not work on a project of some kind. So I hopped on-board for a little trip into the unknown. And well, here we are, still in the unknown. But that doesn’t mean we’re lost. Not yet.
I have to say, Pua Warriors has grown on me. At a certain point it stopped feeling like a student film, and started feeling more like a potential series: a world with its own storyline, and indeed one that’s worth telling – yes, I would make a distinction between the two. Working on the project has just been the sweetest, most wonderful, enlightening, mild existential crisis inducing, and bizarrely friendly thing I’ve had the privilege of working on, all at once. It didn’t just change how I approach character design, animation, or working on a team – I feel it changed me for the better as a person, and at times I feel almost unworthy to be on this project.
One thing I’ll never forget is the time we spent hanging out in the Keller lab, going to group meetings, and recording at MELE. What silly fun times those were. I admit, not being able to hang out with my friends after the virus shut the world down has truly been one of the most difficult parts of my whole “college era” of my life experience. To feel like something great was forming, only to be ripped away by something so crazy and completely over-the-top as this virus – words just can’t capture the feeling of melancholy. But even when we’re spread hundreds or thousands of miles apart, at times I can still feel near, even if it is only through a screen. And personally, I don’t want that to change just because the semester’s ending. That’s why, in a way, I’m sort of glad we have time to work on into the summer.
                                             Reflections on Life
Some lessons this semester taught me: First is on fitting in. It’s never blending in for the sake of blending in, nor standing out for the sake of standing out. It’s being comfortably unique in your own talents and skills, strengths and weaknesses, styles and tastes - while being happy to share those things with others. Indeed, it’s not about being “good enough” to belong, but rather belonging, in order that may do good for others. Second is on wanting to help. For a long time I remained kind of a loner in ACM, sitting in “my” corner with “my” ideas. It wasn’t until last semester and especially during this semester I realized just how powerful, or perhaps rather how much more powerful the drive to help and serve others can be. That’s true not just for creative endeavors, but all areas of life. The Third lesson: doing things for the right reasons. We do things for a lot of different reasons, and often times we aren’t cognizant of why we act or feel the way we do. Having an understanding of who you truly are and what you really want is critical in exercising self-control, and you may come to realize your desires aren’t always what you think they are. And the Fourth lesson is on being assertive. We all want and feel things, and one of the greatest feelings is being in control. You may doubt yourself when you don’t know where your feelings and desires come from. You may think your mind is playing tricks on you. But the truth is, we’ll never go places in life if we don’t speak up and acknowledge our ideas. We may not always come to the right conclusions, but that doesn’t mean we’re wrong for trying. So try, try, and try again. It’s okay to fail, as long as you pick up something with you as you get up. Take risks, and understand that doubt is often our greatest enemy, so fight it!
So now, at the end, I don’t really know what I feel: I don’t know if this is sadness or happiness? Courage or fear? Maybe it’s none of those things, but something I haven’t quite felt before. Until recently, I didn’t realize there’s an emotion that can make you feel so weak, yet feel strong at the same time. One thing’s for sure, I’m going to miss the project, the crew, and all of Hawai'i. To us, the future is a blank slate: nothing is written on it, yet it holds an infinite number of possibilities.
                                          Honoring my Maker
Now before I wrap up, I have a specific topic I’d like to address.
While I  usually avoid discussing my religious life openly in a scholastic context, I will say here and now that God has been my greatest help throughout these past couple years. For the longest time, even before coming to Hawai'i, I struggled with feelings of not fitting in, of low self-esteem, and of self-doubt. There were a lot of recurring battles at my home growing up, and many of the wounds followed me into adulthood. And if nothing else, this semester has brought many of those to the forefront.
As a child back in Washington, I would often just go with the flow of my friends at the time, because it was easier, and allowed me to avoid conflict. Yet I would be lead into instances where I would not speak up or act, even though I felt what we were doing, thinking, or saying was wrong. My family wasn’t particularly religious, or at least they certainly didn’t act like it. And for a while I think I didn’t believe in God. Maybe there was some higher power... maybe, perhaps, but not God. Yet still I felt a crushing weight on my conscience, for both the things I had done, and the things I had failed to do. So I watched TV shows and movies to help me feel safe, to distract myself, and indeed to feel as if I had more power than I actually did.
There came a time in middle school when a big storm came through my life, and when I was living in fear, I turned to God, and He helped me through it. And again in high school, God helped me. And in college, many times more. Through it all, God answered my prayers, and showed me there is a better way. And I came to understand that He gave me a way to life through His Son, long before I was even born. And because of that, I could find comfort and rest by trusting in Him through the afflictions I faced.      So the way I see it, God has lead my life in a way neither I, nor any human being could. I have found that He has a purpose for all things, and truly that nothing comes by accident. I may not say it aloud, but I observe it every day in the places He sets me in, and the people with whom He places me. Yes, even in the midst of this virus. So while family and friends may not always be there to support me, and while institutions may crumble and fall, and while I may move away and feel isolated from all I’ve known, my God was, is, and always will be with me. There is nothing more empowering or reassuring than that. And without coming off too preachy, my hope is that people might perhaps look at that reflected in my life - to see the work God has done, and to consider their own relationship with Him.
                                                       Roll Call
Next, I have a few shout-outs I’d like to mention.
First, to my wonderful film Director Sophia: What can I say? This project has been simply amazing to work on with you. I think back to the moment I first overheard you talking about Pua Warriors. You were so thrilled to do it, and that’s when I realized I might want to jump onboard as well. Since then, the only adjective that comes to mind describing this experience is “vibrant.” I know there have been a lot of ups and downs, but that’s part of what makes the experience worth remembering. And there may very well be more hills and valleys to go through, but I actually look forward to them every day with you, as we continue to make this film happen. You shine like a star with a brilliant, positive energy I’ve never seen before. And I think you have a much greater potential than perhaps even you yourself realize. Of course, everyone has room to grow, but that doesn’t reflect poorly on you at all. It’s the fact that you’ve been so supportive of your team, and that you didn’t give up on your vision, and indeed, you’ve made massive efforts to grow this semester – that’s what makes you a good director in my eyes. And to be honest, I wouldn’t have anybody else direct the film – certainly at least not this “episode” anyway. It’s been a lasting experience, and I hope you’ll take what you’ve learned from it with you. You have a bright future ahead of you Sophia – all you need to do is reach out to it!
Next, to the Art Director and my good friend Gavin, wow what a ride this has been. Your artistic vision, your stamina, and your work ethic are so very remarkable. It’s been awesome these last few years getting to know you and work with you through all the late nights and long class periods. And especially through Midnight Showing and Pua Warriors. You basically set the standard that I and most other animation students aspire to, and you have such a unique way of looking at things too. Even when you’re feeling drained from all the work, your passion clearly shows, and you know how to communicate both very clearly, AND very, uh, sassily, which makes hanging around you hilarious. You’re also one of the only people on Earth that could get me to watch Clone Wars, and I don’t regret it. You give exceptional feedback in each critique, and though it can be tough to incorporate sometimes, you make listening to you a worthwhile endeavor. ACM simply would not be what it is without you, and I know you have many great things you’ll do with your skills moving forward.
To our excellent Animation Supervisor Chandelle, this semester’s been a tough one, but even in the darkest times, the sun still rises! You’ve always been an awesome animator, an incredibly hard worker, and an exceptionally friendly and helpful member of the group. And what’s more, you never sought to put the spotlight on yourself for it. You do things simply because you care, and you do them with such a level of discipline and professionalism that few in the ACM department could match it. I’m sure I speak for the whole group when I say, we care about you so much, and we’re just thankful you’ve been with us on the project. Never sell yourself short Chandelle! You’ve conquered some major obstacles in the past, and I know you have it in you to overcome this one as well. The light will shine again someday, so hang in there, and thanks for all the help you’ve given!
To my fellow animation friend Jared, man, have I got a lot of respect for you. You really know what it’s like to get down and dirty for the team, or feel stuck in a rut in the middle of a project. This last year has probably tested you the most, and yet you never fell apart. Sure, cracks may have formed at times, but you held together and pulled on through to the end. That proves you’ve got guts, and a great capacity for patience and accommodation especially in times of crisis. And that’s exactly what we need - that kind of boldness and passion, to be able to outlast our worries, especially when there are so many unknowns. I remember back to Midnight Showing; boy, that felt like a big time of unknowns too. We had no idea what was coming. And yet you outmatched it, and sure enough, things worked out in the end. And because you’ve been so humble and willing to improve yourself, I’ve seen you get so much better over these last few years, and frankly, it’s astonishing! You’re a great friend, and a hard worker Jared. Keep it up! You’ve got this!
I’d also like mention my fellow animation friend Kalilinoe! Even though we’re not in the same team this semester, you’re still an awesome and inspiring animator to have in class! Working together on Midnight Showing last semester was a lot of work, but also so much fun! And I love your style of animation using rotoscoping. And I gotta say, the animation in Pua Ka Uahi looks sooo smooth and beautiful. Watching your progress on the film this semester has been super inspiring, and definitely keeps the other teams on their toes! I can’t wait to see the finished film!
I’ll also make a brief mention of Jayme and Bobby from our 320/420 classes! You guys rock, and made the year all the better! I hope we’ll get to hang out again sometime!
PLUS, A big thanks to the whole Capstone class! Stay creative, and best wishes to you all!
And finally, one last big shout-out to Lisette for making all of this possible! You’ve been an awesome teacher not just for this course, but for the last few years in general! You always bring such wisdom and expert film knowledge to us younglings. And you’re so willing to make yourself available to your students; always helpful and encouraging to everyone, and even more so now during this time. That’s just the kind of support we need! I’ll be missing your classes greatly! Thanks so much for all your care and help!
                                              A New Chapter Begins
Well, that pretty much wraps up my blog (for the school-production time anyway) of Pua Warriors. I’d like to once again thank each and every one of you for making the ACM experience so incredible. I think I like posting, so I’ll probably try to keep up with the blogs for the future, or at least make an update every once in a while. Thanks for reading through this epic conclusion of a post.
Until next time my friends! This is Alex(is) Nelson, Ganitine, the Undercover Animator, uncovered! See you next time!

Life in Film: Michael Tyburski.
The Sound of Silence director Michael Tyburski shares some insights into the making of his debut feature, and answers our new “life in film” questionnaire.
In The Sound of Silence, Peter Sarsgaard is Peter Lucian, a house tuner in New York City who believes that the notes emitted from a household’s appliances must harmonize in order to bring peace to its residents. However, his state of mind collapses when he struggles to apply his methods for a new client, Ellen (Rashida Jones).
Directed by Michael Tyburski and based on a short film he made with co-writer Ben Nabors in 2013, The Sound of Silence debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and stood out for its “remarkably silly” unique premise and strong performance from Sarsgaard. Fans of ASMR, get your headphones out; the film’s sound design will trigger those sensations.
The Sound of Silence started life as your short film Palimpsest. Is the ‘house tuner’ occupation at all based in reality? Michael Tyburski: The short answer is no, it’s a fictional profession. The character idea is something that my co-writer Ben Nabors brought to me. Right away, I loved the idea of a practise where someone shows up at your door and offers you a solution to the emotional problems that you’re having.
A lot of alternative therapies exist in New York City so it didn’t seem so far from reality that people would take someone intellectual, dressed well in a tweed blazer, with professional-looking tools, seriously. I really liked that as a conceit. We tried to base it in real science and looked at sound engineers and acousticians for what tools they would use. We tried to make it exist in a very real New York City; that’s why we have touchstones like the character being profiled in The New Yorker.
How has your research into music theory affected your own domestic space? Actually, I moved, for the first time in ten years—after living on a pretty noisy commercial street—during the course of developing and making this movie. Somehow, during the edit, I made my first apartment move within New York City, to a much quieter street. I also took a cue from the main character, Peter Lucian, because I moved my office below my apartment, in a subterranean space. At least I can control the sound a little bit more now that I’m cut off from the surface level, similar to the way Peter does it in his “fallout shelter”.

The character Peter Lucian feels like a perfect fit for Peter Sarsgaard. When did you have him in mind? He was my first pick. I knew I wanted him from the beginning when I first started thinking about who would be the perfect house tuner. I feel so lucky to have him and fortunately the script resonated with him right away. He’s someone who’s very musically inclined and he plays a number of musical instruments. I was so gratified that he connected to the part so closely.
He’s such a chameleon of an actor. He can play a lot of dark roles, but also he has a very scientist-like intellect. I also think he has one of the best voices, it’s very unique and I enjoy hearing him. So for a movie about sound, it kind of seemed fitting that someone with those types of qualities would work for the role.
What was important to you about keeping Peter’s house-tuning technology analog instead of digital? I think he’s just someone who has the philosophy of “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it”. Even though his tools are a little more dated, they’re still as effective. They might not be as efficient as digital technology so he’s a little slower, but they still work. There is at least one sound engineer in New York City who we found in our research who measures the sound in rooms, and there’s one thing called a spectrum analyzer that we use in the film that we completely got from this guy’s tool bag.

Director Michael Tyburski.
The film is carefully crafted and you have Peter obsessing over every inch of New York City. What degree of obsession did you have in the making of the film? I’m pretty obsessive as an individual in general. I like to be very organized and have everything mapped out. We had been developing the screenplay for so many years that I got tired of reading it, so before we made the movie, the first thing I did after Peter came on board was sit down and record the entire script in audio format. I kind of had this radio edit of the movie. That transitioned into a rough animatic of the film that I put into the timeline and I was able to add in location references, tonal reference photos, dialogue in different room tones, and then music.
Logistics-wise, we only had 21 days to shoot the movie which is very conservative especially because we had a lot of ground to cover, but I just needed to be as efficient as possible, so it was helpful to have that thorough, animatic tool.
With all the technical departments it was a very close collaboration and I like to be very involved in all details. For the sound design, I wanted to re-record all of the tuning forks, which were kind of an aural motif through the film. When you’re shooting in the elements, you don’t always have the control over the environment, so I hand-recorded each one of the tuning forks myself. We were aiming for that level of precision.
We’d like to ask a few questions about your life in film. What was the film that made you want to become a filmmaker? My choice is probably not that unique but when I was 13, maybe a little too young, I got a VHS copy of Pulp Fiction. That stunned me and took me from A to B. It shook up how I thought contemporary American stories could be told.
Which film do you think is the best love letter to New York? Annie Hall, closely tied with Midnight Cowboy. I suppose I love that era of New York.
Which film has the greatest sound design work of all time? There’s a lot, but one of my favorites is Play Time.
Nice choice. Greatest production design of all-time too. Yeah, not bad. I used a few frames for my look book.

Which is the most overlooked performance from Peter Sarsgaard? I loved him in Experimenter, which I think is an underrated film. More recently too, Errol Morris’s Wormwood. I don’t know how many people went down that rabbit hole because it was long, but I think he was so good in it.
What films did you watch to prepare you for The Sound of Silence? There were three that we were looking at, for a lot of different reasons. We watched Jonathan Glazer’s Birth for the mood and that fairytale vibe it has in a mysterious, alternate New York City.
Being John Malkovich for its bizarro version of science, and I love the naturalistic quality to that film. And obviously The Conversation for its production design and how it follows a man obsessed with sound.
This is a nicely-timed, autumnal, gentle film. What films give you those peaceful autumn vibes? My favorite is Hannah and Her Sisters.
What mindfuck movie changed you for life? I’ll have a couple Kubrick on this list, but for this probably A Clockwork Orange.
It’s Halloween next month. What movie do you watch every Halloween? The Shining! There’s my next Kubrick.
As a teenager, what film character felt like a total mirror to what you were feeling at the time? One of my favorite coming-of-age films is Harold and Maude. I definitely identified with Harold.
What’s your go-to comfort movie? And how many times do you think you’ve seen it? My favorite film of all time, which I promise will be my last Kubrick, is Barry Lyndon. I think it’s just a perfect movie and I’ve certainly seen it dozens of times. I think it does everything I want in a movie. I don’t even know what genre to call it because it’s funny, it’s dramatic, it’s an epic. I love the idea of doing a perfect epic movie that covers a lot of ground.

Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Barry Lyndon’ (1975).
What film do you have fond memories of watching with your parents? We were a big Chevy Chase household and National Lampoon’s Vacation holds up as a fine movie.
What’s a classic you could just not get into? Maybe Brazil. Admittedly I think I need to rewatch it because I first saw it when I was 14 or 15 and I just didn’t quite get it at the time.
What classic are you embarrassed to say you haven’t seen? Two Kurosawa films; Rashomon and Seven Samurai. They’re always on my list to brush up and they seem to come up in conversation more and more.
Which movie scene makes you cry the most? Definitely the holiday classic It’s A Wonderful Life.
What film was your entry point into non-English language cinema? That was a good one, I like that question. I remember when I was in my freshman year of high school I was given two VHS copies from someone who knew I was getting into film. One of those films was Persona, but then the other one, which I knew I watched first, was a film called Woman in the Dunes.
What filmmaker—living or dead—do you envy the most? If Kubrick, go for living… If it’s Kubrick go for living? Oh my gosh.
I feel like you’re going to say Kubrick. Yeah. Envy is a funny word. Kubrick has an admirable career for the depth of his filmography. You know, like a lot of film nerds I’m a huge Paul Thomas Anderson fan.

Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Prestige’ (2006).
What’s a film that you wish you made? I would love to make a movie about magic but ever since I saw The Prestige I think it would be hard to compete with that. That period, that Victorian era of illusion, I don’t know if you can top that.
It’s time for best-of-decade lists. What’s the greatest film of the 2010s? If we went back even further it would be easier. For the last 10 years, I think Phantom Thread is pretty great.
‘The Sound of Silence’ was released on September 13 by IFC Films and is in select cinemas now.

The unofficial “Change, In All Things, Is Inevitable” playlist.
Here’s some of the music I listened to while working on this fic, plus a few key lyrics and some commentary about each song:
------------
Gladiator – Zayde Wolf
Imma give you a second just to catch your breath / 'Cause I can see that your heart is jumpin' out your chest / I know you gave it all 'cause I've already seen your best, and it’s time you accepted this
Let me tell ya / I've got every reason to fight
This song is great because it pumps me up and then 1 minute and 50 seconds into it, the tone does a complete 180 and gives me serious chills. It reminds me of current Megatron vs. past Megatron, and his initial motivation for starting the Decepticon revolution in the first place. I think he lost his guiding principles along the way, but his anger and gladiator might hasn’t gone anywhere. It’s a perfect Megatron song for obvious (and not so obvious) reasons.
Church – Fall Out Boy
Megatron: Take the pain / Make it billboard big then swallow it for me / Time-capsule for the future / Trust me, that's what I will be Soundwave: Oh, the things that you do in the name of what you love Orion Pax: I love the world but I just don't love the way it makes me feel
Church makes me think of the early days of the revolution when Orion, Soundwave, and Megatronus were all working together towards the same goal. The chorus is fitting for all of them; their friendship was a sanctuary of sorts, and it gave them the kind of support / relationship none of them ever had before (at least in Megatron’s case). Friendship was a novel, strange, but wonderful thing. Pity it didn’t last long :’I
If I’m being completely honest, Toastyhat’s animatic for this song definitely influenced my associations, what with the gladiator ring and all that, haha. It’s a fantastic animation, and I highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t already.
Meet Me on the Battlefield – Svrcina
We carry on through the storm / Tired soldiers in this war / Remember what we're fighting for Our tainted history, is playing on repeat / But we could change it if we stand up strong and take the lead When I was younger, I was named / A generation unafraid / For heirs to come, be brave
This melancholic song is a perfect fit for the tone of the war, and Optimus’ feelings on it. Poor guy never expressed interest in being a Prime, but he never really got a say in the matter. The best he can do is keep moving forward hoping it’ll one day come to an end.
(Side note: someone’s done a TFP AMV with this song! Go check it out.)
Run to You – Pentatonix
I've been settling scores, I've been fighting so long / But I've lost your war and our kingdom is gone I will break down the gates of heaven / A thousand angels stand waiting for me
Very much a melancholic unrequited Soundwave --> Megatron song. I don’t care how many times I listen to this; my heart always aches for poor Soundwave and the ending he got in TFP. He would’ve gone to hell and back for Megatron (and I suppose, in a way, he did).
Battle Cry – Imagine Dragons
Stars are only visible in darkness / Fear is ever-changing and evolving Nobody can save you now / The only sound is the battle cry
Another great song for Megatron! He reveled in his fights as a gladiator, and war is no different. It’s his challenge to Optimus and anyone else who'd dare oppose him. In essence, I see it as Megatron’s “If you’re not with me, then you’re against me, and you’d better be damn well prepared to be treated like an enemy” song.
The “stars are only visible in darkness” line also reminds me of Optimus and Megatron’s conversation in IDW’s “The Transformers” #22 comic, where Megatron goads Optimus, saying he would’ve been no one and nothing without him / the war:
Tumblr media
Also: I genuinely had no idea this was a Bayverse song until recently so sHHH LET ME LIVE
Chains – Radical Face
I thought I had control, that I could always walk away if things turned bad / We were thick as thieves 'til I became the one who always went too far / And I couldn't hear you  In the end I'm lost / And I'll drag you down yeah, that's my cost / But I'm glad you were my friend
Finally, the song that helped inspire this fic! Definitely gives me strong MegaOp vibes. Despite everything that wound up happened, Megatron and Optimus were each other’s biggest influences for a loooong time. That’s not the kind of thing that can be forgotten easily! I think Megatron was briefly reminded of the friendship they once had at the end of Predacon Rising. Megatron doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who has regrets, but I still wonder if anything akin to it crossed his mind before the end.
A few bonus lighthearted joke songs: A Little Help From My Friends – The Beatles This song came up on my playlist while I was editing some early chapters where Megatron / Orion / Soundwave were still buddies, which I thought was ironic, sweet, and a little bit sad. Take A Chance On Me – ABBA  An example of a song I associated with a character as a joke, then thought about WAY too much to the point where it’s no longer a joke. Anyways, please imagine Soundwave playing this every time Megatron passes him up in favor of the Decepticon’s latest traitorous and/or knuckleheaded senior officer. (Seriously though, why on EARTH do you have your most loyal officer as your third in command, Megatron??? Stability and competence clearly mean nothing to you).
Strawberry Blond – Mitski
All I need, darling, is a life in your shape / I picture it, soft, and I ache
This song is perhaps a little bit too wistful / lighthearted for the TFP continuity, but the tone (and the topic of unrequited love) reminded me of a young love-struck Orion Pax. (This was supposed to be a fun addition to this list but the more I think about it, the sadder I get :’I I’m so sorry your life sucked so much, Orion).
Songs reminding me of other TF continuities that nonetheless influenced this fic: Firewall – Les Friction
Deep beneath the light / A spark will now ignite You will see me now / This is my world now
A great G1 / IDW song that’s particularly good for Megatron and Optimus. I could dissect every single line of this song and create an entire MV to it, but I’ll spare you the 10 page essay. Just listen to the song and let your imagination run wild! So many lines are perfect!!! Alright I lied, here’s a few good corresponding lines: Megatron: Fear is a device / So quiet and precise / It's not what I allow / Not in my world now Rodimus / the Matrix: This force is in love with you / It wants you safe / It wants you well Shockwave / empurata: This force knows what you can do / And what you can make / With your tattered shell Optimus / the Matrix: Faith in your device / So quiet and precise / Just when, not how / You can feel it now The Autobots: Deep beneath the light / A spark will now ignite The Decepticons: You will see me now / This is our world now
Dangerous Man – Little Dume  An absolutely PERFECT IDW Megatron song! Great for Megatron post- his change of heart. I actually am determined to make an MV with him for this song because it’s just that perfect.
Silhouettes – Of Monsters and Men
There's nothing that I'd take back / But it's hard to say there's nothing I regret.
Not necessarily a perfect song for TF, but these two lines from it reminded me so strongly of Megatron / Optimus I figured it was worth making note of.
