On today's "I am SO not normal about Dead Friend Forever": Discussing Catholicism and Colonization in this gay Thai slasher series

Some background on me: I am from a Latine Catholic family. Raised as a non-practicing Catholic (we didn't go to church or pray). Then my parents enrolled me in a Catholic school that I attended from 5th grade to the end of 7th grade. Today, I am not Catholic and have never really considered myself as such.

Ok, so in the flashback episodes of DFF, I have been noticing a lot of things. My findings under the cut.

Let's start with this crucifix and photo of the Virgin Mary and a baby Jesus.

The camera lingers here a bit so we're obviously meant to pay attention to the phrase. I put the screenshot through Google translate's image translator and the translation it gave me was, "Think good, do good, be a good person." I didn't think much of it when I first watched the episode other than it was supposed to establish that the boys attend a Christian or Catholic school.

But then there was this image posted on Be On Cloud's Instagram (also from ep. 5): X

Zooming in, we can see there's another picture of Mary in the background. Watching the classroom scenes, it's easy to miss because the series itself is more washed out than the official photos posted. But this emphasis on Mary led me to believe the school is a Catholic one. So out of curiosity, I looked up the schools the writers and directors attended because I felt I was onto something here. And boy, was I!

Ma-Deaw, if you didn't know, is one of the directors of Dead Friend Forever (he also directed Manner of Death and Inhuman Kiss , and lots of other things).

One Google search later (X) and I learned "Montfort College" is a Catholic school. It started out as a primary school that later added a secondary school as well.

Now let's take a closer look at some of the details of this school:

First, the school's motto "Labor Conquers All Things". This reminded me of the phone conversation Tee had with his uncle:

On my first watch, this sounded familiar to me but I couldn't really place why. It wasn't until I saw this other Tumblr post (X) that pointed out it's similar to a bible quote from the New Testament. The quote varies a bit depending on which version of the bible you're using but it's along the lines of, "He who does not work, neither shall he eat".

This is meant to discourage "laziness". Nevermind the fact that people deserve to eat simply because we get hungry and need food to survive. The idea that we only "deserve" things based on productivity is an extremely colonial one. — Reminder also that Tee is being forced into this "work" in the first place. He's just a high school kid. I don't need to like his character to understand how fucked up his situation is.

Then there's the patron of the school. St. Louis de Montfort was a French Catholic priest most known for his study in Mariology. What is Mariology (X)? The study of Mary, the mother of Jesus. I didn't know that was a thing but it's unsurprising considering how prominent images of Mary were in my own religious upbringing. And she's what started me down this rabbit hole in the first place. Mary is a big deal to the Catholics. I'm going to be paying even more attention now if more Mary imagery pops up.

The Garden of Eden and Original Sin

Now I want to draw attention to these images:

Here we have Non and Phee biting into an apple as they leisure around this lush green field. We know they've visited this location more than once because they're wearing different outfits in the screenshots. And I think it's important to note that it's Phee holding the apple and offering it to Non.

The use of the word "bait" in the bts of ep. 7 is quite interesting too. (X)

The Garden of Eden was the paradise in which Adam and Eve resided. In this garden, there were many trees to eat from. The one tree Adam and Eve were forbidden by God to eat from was the Tree of Knowledge. A serpent (Satan), first tempted Eve into taking from the tree to eat it's fruit. And then Eve gave the fruit to Adam. That is Original Sin. And because Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge, all humans thereafter are born sinful and bad, and can only find salvation through God.

Of course in the scene between Phee and Non, the sin the apple represents is being gay. And it's after this, and after the bracelet scene, that Non becomes involved with Por's film and his tragedy begins.

And I wonder if the bracelet scene is the last time Phee and Non visit this forest location. It would parallel how Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden once they sinned.

Final Thoughts

You give me a story that criticizes Western religion and how it's used as a tool for oppression and colonization, and I'm gonna eat that shit up. I am gonna eat it up. Every. Single. Time.

I really wasn't expecting anything like this from Dead Friend Forever. This level in attention to detail is unmatched. I don't think I've watched a more well planned out show. And no matter where DFF goes from here, these seven episodes will always hold a special place in my heart. 💗

“I don’t know,” Neil says. “Why would you be a worm? How would I even know who you were?”

You did already ask me this and I did have an answer in the works to the original ask, but because Tumblr's mobile app is my number one enemy, I accidentally posted it. So, really, it's super fortunate that you asked this twice!

But! Because I'm a smart cookie, I took some screenshots of what I had typed out in the original post, so I can just re-type it out here and carry on! (I'd post just the screenshots, but they're full of typos because I'm just awful at typing on a phone.)

So, here's my answer:

Yes!! Give me a Noah who thought he was being so sneaky and cunning by intentionally getting himself eliminated, only for it to backfire horrendously!

The producers would've known that the contestants were being sent to Camp Wawanakwa instead of the resort their contract heavily implied they'd be going to, so they would absolutely anticipate at least one of them trying to pull a stunt like Getting Themselves Eliminated Intentionally- either as an act of defiance against the trickery (of Camp Wawanakwa not being what was advertised) or just to be spiteful.

Noah being the one to do so is just happenstance.

(It was more so expected from the likes of Duncan or Izzy, who are outwardly anti-authoritarian and not afraid to confront perceived injustices.)

If I may, I'd suggest having the contract outline that whoever intentionally gets themself eliminated has to work as a base-level intern, and that their "pay" is them working off whatever expenses the show invested into them as a competitor (travel costs, lodging, food, ect.). So Noah ends up stuck in the role of an unpaid intern for however long it takes him to "earn his keep" so to speak. But it's a Sisyphean task, since his debt is ever growing- he's forced to stay at Playa des Losers as an intern, and his daily cost of living is just added to the expenses he needs to work off.

At first, he'd be outright resistant to doing any of his tasks as an intern, because why should he? He didn't ask for the job, he didn't (knowingly) sign up for it either, and it's not like he's gonna be paid for his work. That is, until the producers threaten to pass his debt off to the rest of his family to "pick up his slack"; Noah's not heartless, and he cares a lot about his family, so he concedes to actually doing the work expected of him to save the rest of his brood from having to compensate for his short-sightedness.

(Let's say this turn of event takes about a week, meaning that from the time of his own elimination to the threat to his family's financial wellbeing, only Justin and Katie have been eliminated. Since, at least during Island, it's established that a challenge and subsequent elimination ceremony happens every three days.)

Now, the thing about lazy people- of which Noah undoubtedly is- is that they're downright innovative when it comes to figuring out shortcuts for any type of labour. Now that he's invested in doing his job, Noah uses that big brain of his to quickly figure out how to get all of his allotted tasks for the day completed to near-perfection, in a manner that's both efficient and easy. It gets to the point where he's completing a full day's work in an hour, spending the rest of the day doing what he loves; nothing. The other interns are just as annoyed as they are impressed.

Word quickly gets back to Chris about his miracle intern. But he's either too preoccupied to actually listen to who it is, or no one thinks to explain that his most productive labourer is the ex-competitor he'd contractually conned into the position.

Needless to say, Chris' interest is piqued.

The host issues a request to have the mystery intern shipped out to the island so they can work on the "important stuff" instead of doing menial tasks on the Playa, and is met with staunch refusal on their part. Which is odd, at least to Chris, since the interns send to be far too scared shitless of him (or, more notably, Chef) to ever outright deny a request like that.

It makes more sense when Noah's literally dragged kicking and screaming back to the island. Of course the only person ballsy enough to defy Chris' whims is the same contestant who got himself intentionally eliminated via deliberately pissing off his teammates. But he's back, now, so he might as well be put straight to work! No use in wasting labour, after all.

(Again, this probably happens over the course of a few days at most, since showbusiness is such a hectic and fast-paced line of work, so let's say that Tyler's the only new elimination in this timeframe.)

Again, Noah utilizes his higher-than-average smarts to figure out how to streamline his expected tasks because he's lazy, inadvertently proving himself as a Valuable Asset to both Chris and Chef since he's surprisingly good at what he does (even if what he does is very little by design). Chris is quick to offer Noah an ultimatum; he can either be promoted to being Chris' Personal Assistant, thus meeting the demands of his previous contract (and, of course, entering a new one under different pretences) and finally being paid for his work, or remain as an unpaid intern indefinitely and receive penalisation for his slacking off- since, despite the fact that he's gotten all of his work finished, he's still technically on the clock for the allotted work hours and should be acting as such instead of lazing about.

It's not really much of a choice. Noah reluctantly takes the promotion.

That's how he finds himself in the position we all know and love; Chris' Personal Assistant.

Because of his new promotion, he's expected to be at least within the vicinity of Chris at all (reasonable) times. The problem with that? Chris is hosting the show he got himself eliminated from in the most socially destructive way possible. Noah's now contractually forced to, at the very least, tiptoe around the prior teammates he knowingly and intentionally made hate him and dearly hope they don't notice him.

...Thus begins an AU's worth of shenanigans wherein Noah is desperately trying to fly under everyone's radar as an intern.

(I'd carry on into what he does during Action and World Tour, but this post is already fairly long, so maybe another time?)

YEAH it's super unbelievably fucked up. i think i kinda remember the circumstance being a bit dire so everyone else was more worried about either 1. protagonist getting stomped on brutally or 2. saving the world from kyurem / the bittercold. i was totally under the impression that he was dead in that moment but i guess the characters may have known that he would just come back? i seem to vaguely remember partner being surprised that he came back and being like "but we watched you die :OOO" but maybe i'm misremembering that. i do create a lot of pmd lore on my own time so i have a hard time telling the difference between canon and fanon sometimes

two a day makes the world go round! this blog started when i started college, paused for 80% of my college career and now has started back up and i just graduated college a week ago. i would say "how time flies" but it has been a very, very long year

i've said it before and i'll say it again: gen 6 is my favorite gen, so you'll be seeing lots of favor for this gen from me in the tags i'm sure. maybe gen 6 is my excuse to start doing other things here. like that stream i keep talking about

I'm now into the 5th season of hxh. As soon as I finish this series I will actually make a proper post but in the meantime I want to shout into the void how I feel about some of these bastards. Yes I was too lazy to turn off subtitles before taking hulu screenshots. I've been cutting into my sleep hours to watch this since the past week since I keep having to work overtime so this might be incoherent and delirious idk. I'm not entirely sure I'm awake right now. This might be a dream. Anyway

Hisoka was the only character I was familiar with by name prior to watching and like. I always assumed the pervert schtick was like a one-time line/single scene that people just took and ran with it. I was incorrect

I know full well this man would most likely kill me but like. I think I'd be okay with it. I think it would be a good way to go and I would probably accept it. I'd thank him even. I'd ask him to step on me while he does it. Or maybe I'm right at the threshold where I'm so pathetic I'm genuinely not worth killing which I think I'd also be okay with as long as I can still get knocked to the ground and have him step on my neck. Please sir

Also a large portion of me watching this, up until this past week, has been while I'm at home bc I've been home a lot recently and I often have a parallel play thing going on with my mother where in the evenings I'll watch something or play games while she browses facebook or reads her Bible/Christian books and she'll like pay half-attention and make comments every few minutes on anything I watch. In true parent fashion she's managed to be there for like every scene of random naked shots or weird moaning and says nothing, but once just looked up, made a face of deep discomfort and went back to highlighting her Bible. I think about this a lot. I'm sorry mom

I'm very weak to comic relief men actually and I have a triple weakness to token perv characters and furthermore my ovaries were created as such that men who are incredibly intelligent while also being astoundingly dumb are my kryptonite so my boy, be he as he may, dare I admit, does things to me. I think if you pulled the typical tease line where you say something about having a problem and needing a doctor to inspect you or just flash him he might die on the spot and that is very endearing to me. One could torment this man with the slightest of skin or sensuality it would be very easy. I appreciate you leorio

I want to protect Killua but like does he need it really. Like the "oh poor baby I want to hold him and squeeze him and never let anything harm him" urge is there because of my blatant maternal complexes but at the same time I know full well he does not need protecting and would realistically be the one protecting anyone else but like the urge is still there. I don't care. I WILL find something to protect him from and I WILL do it

Also very tsun. I can sense it. I know I'm dumb and weak and I would get snarky comments about it but that's okay. I would let the middle school aged boy bully me. I'd be okay with that

I think Illumi looks kind of like an insect. However he also terrifies me a little bit but I don't think that would particularly bother him. I think I could tell him both that he terrifies me and that he looks like a bug and he would have an entirely neutral response. Would probably just ask what kind of bug but may be disappointed if I name a non-cool bug. I'd probably say a grasshopper. I don't know how he would feel about that

I think what would be infuriating to me most is it is difficult to get much of a reaction out of this dude. Like you can be a total nightmare to have as a captive and the most you'll get is a :/ response. In attitude at least, like he'd probably still snap my wrist if deemed appropriate but would do it with just a mildly exasperated face/voice. I would try so hard to get a strong reaction and would never get it and that infuriates me. What right do you have to infuriate me like this bug man. Stop staring at me with them big ol eyes

I think if this man were to be living a normal life and not running with criminals he would wear socks with sandals on a daily basis. Like those thick white halfway up the calves socks and tan buckled sandals worn exclusively by boomer middle aged dads. And it's not the only trait he would share with middle aged men either I think he would care deeply about the quality of his lawn and mispronounce foreign things in a way that is borderline creative for how wrong it is. I think he just is a middle aged boomer dad trapped in a younger man's body. Release this man into a Home Depot and he will immediately adapt to his natural habitat

I am terrified of this man because due to who I am as a person I immediately evaluate all male specimens on what I think sex with them would be like, and cannot imagine a scenario involving this man where I come out of it without actual internal damage. Like you know how people joke about "rearranging your guts/insides" well this would be that but like actually genuinely. I think intercourse with this tank of a man would automatically necessitate medical attention. However do not mistake my horror for hesitancy because organ rupture is a price I will willingly pay for the experience of a realistic simulation of what I imagine it feels like to be a sick gazelle that falls behind the rest of the herd only to start hearing suspenseful nature documentary music

I cannot look at this man without my blood pressure immediately rising. I have never been simultaneously so strongly attracted to yet have such a strong desire to strangle someone. I think the worst part of this is that he would somewhat let me attempt to strangle him but would find it endearing and would start going on an analysis of my personhood and I will be real with you all that would peak my fury and I would become violent. And blah blah "understanding myself" hey man can you maybe not mass murder and go on your journey of self discovery by doing drugs or taking a road trip or something like a normal person in their quarter life crisis. Is that so hard.

As my fingers type these words I can feel my heart rate increasing and I am filled with immense fury and arousal at the same time. Why are you attractive? What is wrong with me? I hate it and I hate myself for it. I have to unironically take a break from typing to take a deep breath. I have to move on because I'm getting heart palpitations

Shalnark seems underappreciated. I love him so much but he also terrifies me in a way none of the others do. Like sure being blatantly cruel or loud or huge like some of the others is one thing but he's too cheery. It scares me on a visceral level. Sir why are you smiling like that. I do not trust it. Or rather realistically I know I WOULD trust it if I met this man as a stranger because I'm very gullible and that would not end well for me. This boy would probably be like one of the absolute worst people to end up stuck with once you get into it but that is very well hidden from the surface and I do not like that. I know I'm naive as all hell and I would fall for the same tricks over and over and I just know that would be used against me

On the bright side though this does mean he would actually fit the classic, original yandere trope since originally yanderes are supposed to be super sweet and cheery externally, so there's that

hello! nope idm at all! and tysm~ (´｡• ᵕ •｡`)

i'm gonna assume that you're referring to something like these below (the main b&w scene of the gif on the left and the anime crop of the gif on the right) and not sth like recolouring backgrounds!

scene selection: i would usually go with static or more or less still scenes for these, just because it's much easier to mask. if you really wanna do a moving scene, it's not technically impossible it's just really tedious because you'll have to mask the scenes frame by frame which is... not fun _(:3 」∠)_

there are two main ways i go about doing these, depending on whether i'm removing the background of a live action show or an animation. the logic is pretty much similar, they differ in how you get rid of the stuff you don't want!

live action: BRUSH TOOL

this is how the scene looks like as it is - there's minimal movement here and it appears more or less static, but even so when i was doing this the movement of the gun was already problematic enough

with your gif layer selected, add a layer mask using this button here at the bottom

once your layer mask has been added, make sure you have your layer mask selected, then use the brush tool (B) and select a soft brush

brush over on the layer mask. you can use a larger size first to get rid of the easier and larger areas first, but as you go to tighter/ smaller areas, you can switch over to a smaller size

what it looks like in the end, before i've done by colouring and added in the other elements!

animation: (MAGNETIC) LASSO + MARQUEE TOOLS

the original scene with the background - absolutely no movement at all besides his mouth ✨ PERFECT ✨

again, add a layer mask, and with the layer mask selected, select the magnetic lasso tool. you might have to right click on the original lasso tool (L) and select magnetic lasso from the drop down, or if you're lazy and want to use shortcuts you can keep clicking shift+L to scroll through the lasso tool variations until you reach the magnetic lasso

then, start tracing out the area you want to crop out. with the magnetic lasso, you don't have to click anything; it will automatically lay down points that adhere to the lines based on the difference in colours like a magnet (hence, magnetic)

in some areas that are too tight or where the difference between colours is not large enough, you can still click to lay down a point so before the magnet does

trace out the whole area and close the loop. the magnetic lasso is not perfect; as you trace along, the magnet might lay down points at parts you don't want it to, but don't fret about that it can still be fixed!

TO ADD AREAS THAT ARE STRAIGHT (e.g. the base or top or sides): with your original selection still active, select the marquee tool (M), hold down shift, and mark out the area you want to be added to your selection. when you hold down shift, there will be a + sign on your cursor. remember to hold down shift!!! if you don't your original selection will disappear

TO ADD AREAS THAT ARE MORE ORGANIC (e.g. everything else basically): same logic as the marquee tool, but now you'll use the lasso tool (L) instead to draw out the area you want to add. again, as you make your selection, remember to hold down shift! in this screenshot here, the dotted lines indicate the original selection and the solid line shows the new selection to be added

TO REMOVE AREAS: similarly, with either the marquee or lasso tool, draw out the area you want to remove. this time, instead of holding down shift, hold down option (mac) / alt (windows) - not too sure for windows, i think it's this. this time, your cursor will have a - sign

once you're happy with your selection, use the paint bucket (G) to fill in the selected area on the layer mask

right click and invert the mask if you have to so that it shows the area you want

alternative to the above step, right click your selection and select inverse so that the selection goes from the area you want to keep to the area you want to remove

and similarly, fill in the area you want to remove with the paint bucket

OR if you had done your selection before adding a layer mask (this is what i usually do actually), just add the layer mask with your selection active and the layer mask will automatically remove the unselected area

LIVE ACTION VS. ANIMATION

just as an ending note, i usually use these different approaches bc live actions tend to have ~softer~ edges and outlines vs the background (like irl) so if i were to use the lasso/ marquee way of doing it, it's technically possible by adjusting the feathering, but it's a lot more tedious than just using a brush to block out the areas you don't want

you also very rarely have scenes that are absolutely still in live action shows unless you're giffing a non-animate object; living things tend to move around after all. so it won't look that good and clean if you have a very solid crop in a live action show (which is what you'll get if you use the lasso/ marquee method without any feathering)

meanwhile, animations tend to have very defined outlines and there are some scenes where your subject is absolutely still - just like the example i've used here. while it's definitely possible to use a brush with solid edges, imo it doesn't look as clean and nice and might end up being more tedious because you'll have to keep varying the size of the brush whenever you go from big to small areas, and it's much easier to accidentally eat into areas you don't want because the brush is round. (also, when you get to hair tips... it's a nightmare)

langue de chat physically cannot take a break . like theyve had this mindset for such a long time that they need to keep pushing themself and strive to be better that they cant even Comprehend the idea of not working. like Huh?? stop.. doing things? just put everything down and do NOTHING? where would that get them? they didnt become a great lawyer by slacking off

in their new dialogue in the camping event they talk about how when their parents took them camping they sat in the tent and studied (and said it proudly might i add. they dont see anything wrong with this. they said it like a fond memory. theyre proud of their work ethic) and their whole entire costume when they literally just Dont know what to do with themself. they snuck their case files into their vacation they literally dont know what to do with themself when theyre not working

like if you look at their regular dialogue compared to their vacation costume is Crazy im too lazy to grab screenshots but like they use a bunch of ellipsis in their costume where their dialogue in their regular form is so much more confident ,,, theyre hesitant to relax. they dont know how to. theyve spent their whole life working as hard as they can until they inevitably burn themself out and they STILL dont let themself rest and then it turns into a cycle. i have a feeling most of their vacation was spent sitting awkwardly on the beach watching everyone run and laugh and theyre sitting there thinking about how badly they want to go back to work, to be in that cycle again because at least its familiar

And then they finally loosen up!!! they actually relax!!!!!!! in their costume lines they talk about actually enjoying their time and they dont want their vacation to end now ! so happy for them . im going to put them in a vacuum chamber. they deserve a little break here and there no matter how much they enjoy their job

You grunt in reply and puld the blanket over your cold body. Howard is already up, enthusiastic as always. But today you’re too tired for that.

“Come on now… You’ve been snoozing for 20 minutes!”

“I don’t want to…”

His smile fades and he sits down on bed next to you.

“You alright?” He reaches out to stroke your cheek and notices how cold-sweaty you are. “Hmm… That’s not good.”

“I don’t feel well.”

“I know, sweetie, I know…”

I feel like he’d be like: YOU’RE SICK??? 😰 at first

But then be like: You’re sick… 💔 If that makes sense LOL

Probably scared of catching a cold etc

But he loves you - so it’s worth the risk 😌✨

Howard is the guy that helps you with everything once sick

He fixes food, makes sure you keep warmth and makes warm tea etc

He basically acts like a maid for you until you feel better lol

But he doesn’t mind, at all <3

He likes taking care of and spoiling you

“Are you cold, darlin’?” he asks, proceeding to wrap a blanket over your shoulders.

“No, I actually feel quite warm” He looks concerned and feels your forehead “Your fever is not going down… Do you want something cold instead? Water, ice cream… Are you laughing?” “Sorry… You’re just so cute when you’re worried!”

Also… You being sick gives him an excuse to just sit back down and cuddle you

He allows himself to be “lazy” (aka taking a break and not overworking) when you’re around

He loves to set you down in the couch and put on some movie to watch together

If he can’t be at home with you - he texts or calls you at least once throughout the day to check on you

It doesn’t matter if you only have a simple cold, he’ll take care of you until you feel ok again

He probably would end up sick too 😭 “But at least we can stay home together now!” he says after waking up with the same cold you had. “...But Howard, I need to go back to work today” “...Oh ☹” But you’re of course there for him too until he feels better <3

“You’re burning up” Nacho mutters, still having his palm pressed against your sweaty forehead. “I’m fine, Nacho”

“But…”

“Rest.” His voice gets softer “Let me take care of you, ok?”

He’ll be all 😐 towards everyone, all the time

But not with you.

Whenever you’re doing poorly, he’s right there. Whether it’s mentally or like in this case - when you’re sick.

He’s the guy that will grimace and be really judgy if someone sneezes or coughs in public, but he tries his best to not be a baby about it for you.

And he’s good at it

Truth is, he somehow likes it when you’re sick

Just because he’ll get to take care of you

And have you all dependent on him

It takes his mind off all his troubles, and he can focus on you only.

He brings you tea, soup, painkillers… Whatever you need - whenever.

He also appreciates cuddling up next to you and watch TV, letting you pick out whatever

It’s just comforting to him - somehow - to feel your fever warmth against him.

Basically - he’s already a sweetheart, but becomes the most caring (and worried) boyfriend ever when you’re sick. <3 “Nacho, don’t be so close, I don’t want you to be sick too…” “I don't care.” he murmurs

…And eventually he ends up sick too lol

He’s really overdramatic about it 😭

Before meeting you - he’d overwork himself and not give a damn about resting

But since he takes well care of you - you of course do the same for him.

So when he eventually catches a cold, you’re there for him “Well look at that… Told you that you’d get sick.” “...Shut up.” “Will you let me take care of you?”

And of course… He lets you

Homeboy gets overdramatic af when sick 😭

He likes seeing you all worried for him - it’s cute lol

Nacho makes sure you’re cuddled up next to him all day

And now it’s his turn to choose movies/series for you to watch with him

1. the character everyone gets wrong

Faragonda. People either think that she's secretly a villain or that she's a meek, old grandma. The villain part is really annoying because people act like Faragonda sending the Winx on life-threatening missions is a writing choice made in regards to showing her character when it's a writing choice made for the sake of plot. The writers don't care how Faragonda comes off if they can get their little plot with getting the Winx to save the day work. It's true about everything. How come she spies on the Winx but never does it when they actually need help and she could save them but at the cost of interfering with the plot? Her seemingly keeping the Agador box (4x01) is just the writers being lazy with coming up with a new design for something that will be on screen for 10 seconds. Honestly, name one of her "shady" actions that cannot be explained as a plot convenience. The other side of the spectrum is honestly just... Are you blind? She clearly has a lot more backbone than people realize, yet when that's noticed, it somehow makes her a villain. I am tired.

3. screenshot or description of the worst take you've seen on tumblr

Somebody implying that Daphne is at fault for getting killed by the Ancestral Witches because she chose to sacrifice herself for Bloom and she could have just let her baby sister get murdered if she'd wanted to save herself. What even???????? *flips table*

4. what was the last straw that made you finally block that annoying person?

I block over too many wrong opinions or just a few opinions that are Very Wrong TM. So it's usually that. I don't try to remember what exactly made me mad.

7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?

Roxy, kind of. I don't hate her but every time I see someone whining about her not being part of the later seasons and bemoaning the fact that she was supposed to be the seventh Winx but then dissapeared, I start to hate her... until I distance myself from that part of fandom. I think Roxy has much potential in her quality of being a foil to Bloom, someone with a very similar backstory but completely different feelings on magic and being a fairy. However, the writers are so hellbent on making her Bloom 2.0 that they completely ignore the differences between the two that they themselves wrote in and the fandom just makes all of that worse when they try to shove Roxy everywhere and force her into the same mold that the Winx fit into. Roxy should have gotten to decide for herself and instead of going to Alfea should have stayed at home with her long-lost mother. Morgana was literally the queen of the Earth fairies. I bet she could have taught Roxy everything she'd learn at Alfea and more, considering that Earth seems to have a different branch of magic altogether that probably differs from the curriculum at Alfea. Plus, that way she could have spent some time with the mother that is a stranger to her and she could have found her own path instead of being forced into something she clearly didn't want just to be like the Winx and, more importantly, Bloom.

8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about

The idea that SotLK is a better movie than Magical Adventure. The way that Bloom makes headway in her search for her parents is so fucking random. We never learn how the Winx found Hagen, the English dub cut the part where Daphne explains why she now thinks that the Roc might have survived when, for 20 years, she believed it to have been destroyed, and the Book of Fate is the literal fucking worst plot device ever. It straight up tells them that Marion and Oritel are in Obsidian. Don't even get me started on the whole mess that happens once they get there or the search for the key to Obsidian. And the theme - if it can even be called that - is a joke.

Magical Adventure suffers from the fact that the scenes have to be in a certain sequence to make sense and keep the suspense but that sequence makes the story feel like two movies mashed into one. However, the two segments are not bad at all. Sure, there are things that don't work (ugh, that montage with the suitors - what were they thinking?!?!?!). But the movie tries to focus on Bloom's relationship with her birth parents, which the first movie completely skipped over. Bloom and Sky are actually somewhat likable. We see the Winx without magic which hasn't happened since when? Season 1? The Ancestral Witches are actually scary when they possess the Trix and the fights are interesting and creative. Plus, there is a coherent theme about how parents' actions affect their children (there was another nuance here that I can't remember now because it's been a while since I watched it).

I already talked about all the bullshit in SotLK and besides I really hate what they did with Zenith. The source of most technological advancements and, of course, they made the whole society be logic-based and emotionless. I. Cannot. Stand. It! They should have made Zenith's technology come from a place of empathy, of wanting to improve life so much for everyone that they become too focused on their work and don't notice how they isolate themselves from everyone else, including each other. It would have been so much more interesting and they could have kept Tecna as a logic-driven person, who's not good with feelings because that's just who she is. She'd fit even better with Winx if she comes from a planet so dedicated to helping everyone else that they neglect themselves and their emotions.

Blorboifying Valtor. I'm sorry but if you think you want a real-life Valtor, you need to go outside and touch grass. Not to mention that Valtor stans in general seem to have a very distorted view of him. This man has the temper and anger management of a fucking toddler. The only reason why he manages to remain collected and calm a lot of the time is because pretty much no one can stand up to him and pose a threat to his plans and his ego. At the same time somehow people completely miss the fact that he's vain and self-centered and clinging so desperately to his charisma and skills because he knows that deep down he is nothing more than a monster that was created to be a tool for the Ancestral Witches and he hates that. He's practically in constant denial mode about how truly sad his existence is.

12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them

Krystal! She's already at a disadvantage because she's introduced in season 5 AND is instantly shoved in the bullshit drama between Helia and Flora. I have seen people hate on her and call her a shady bitch when all she's done is be overexcited about seeing Helia and managing to defeat the Winx at volleyball and then realizing that maybe the situation came off wrong to Flora and trying to talk to her and tell her that Helia only loves her and he and Krystal are just friends. She's just an excitable teen and she's not at fault for Helia acting weird as fuck and introducing Flora to her as his "friend" as if they haven't been dating for 3 years. Smh. #JusticeForKrystal2kforever

14. that one thing you see in fics all the time

Giving alien features to the girls. Like, I get it but it's always surface level because in the end it's so much easier to work with humanoid characters that you don't have to invent a whole new biology for. It seems completely pointless and usually doesn't come into play a lot. It feels like it's added more for diversity points rather than because it's fun or interesting.

16. you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)

Making Flora a drug dealer. The "Flora does recreational drugs" take honestly feels like people are desperately trying to make her interesting because they don't like her as she's portrayed on the show. And the idea of "Flora is okay with parts of nature that are dangerous and volatile" somehow always seems to lead to "give Flora a gun" when the two have nothing to do with each other. Flora wanting to protect all nature as it is is one of her defining traits. It feels like people are trying to erase her gentleness because they think that a mild-mannered character is worthless. Honestly, the show doesn't help. They make her empathy come down to "don't hurt it" even when the "it" in question is trying to kill her friends. They could have improved on that by letting Flora specialize in restraining spells that don't hurt the creature they're used on so that she can protect her friends and stick to her beliefs.

22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores

The Company of Light. Even the writers ignore it because a) they did not think it through when they added that backstory and created several plot holes, b) they never did anything with it (for the last time - where's the fucking spin-off?!?!?!?!) and c) they constantly make all of the Company members appear incompetent and weaker than they are for the sake of the plot and letting the Winx in the spotlight. Give these people screen time! They are interesting and important! *cries*

I guess Blicy. I just didn't understand why Icy would want to date Bloom but I read a really good fic and I can see it now.

Recolor Resource

I know Simomo has a newer bigger palette, but I’m far too lazy for 178 colors. All credit for this palette goes to Simomo.

With that out of the way

I made some gradient maps for the original 90! Please do feel free to play around with these and change the colors or even make new ones. They’re a lot easier to customize and use than multi-step actions so don’t be afraid to mess around.

How-to under the cut if you need. Very beginner friendly & applies to gradients in general.

You’ll need s4studio and photoshop. I use cs6. I primarily use these for hair type items, but they can be used over anything. I’m working my way through the clothes atm actually. I always use the #15 hair swatch. If that is not available (kids) I have included a gradient map you can run over Dirty Blonde #13 to get #15. It’s not perfect, but it’s close enough for a base.

You can do this over a .dds, .png. jpeg w/e you prefer. I use .pngs.

Load up your file of choice and add an adjustment layer -> gradient map

You should see a menu like this somewhere in your photshop.

which will drop down in to this :

If you do not see the momo colors click the wheel up by Momo 83 in my picture and hit load (you can use replace to get a clean only momo menu like my pic) and select the Momo 90.grd file you hopefully downloaded. You can also double click the .grd wherever you saved it.

Simply pick one and voila. Your texture is recolored.

Something I had trouble with with actions was them not respecting selections and recoloring everything, the map will respect your selection though so you can leave out streaks or hair accessories easily. I selected a small portion to demonstrate :D

I have not included an action because you don’t need one! However, I did make one for myself that loads the colors and saves out as 1.png - 90.png, but it won’t work on other’s pcs because the paths would be different. You definitely can and should do this yourself to save time.

make the layer once, change the color & save. then just change & save until done!

Pro-tip: Save your recolors as .png and name them 1,2,3,4,5 so on. Once you’re done use bulk rename utility and add “Swatch_” as the prefix and “_Diffuse_1″ as the suffix. (in my experience so far “_diffuse_1″ will not need to change, but swatch does so that’s why we don’t add a number to it and instead name the .png as the number.)

If you do this you can bulk import in to s4studio to save you some clicking. :) shift+control+c in s4studio and type “studio.importall” Studio will make a folder where your package is called “yourpackage resources” and you just drop your .pngs in there then type studio.importall again to actually import this time. Yay no more carpal tunnel clicking import 90 times!

You do need to apply the color palette to the package first but s4studio has that palette tool now so no tips/tricks needed. Hope this helps!

also for shits n giggles I put one of the blues over a random skyrim screenshot and set the layer to soft light for a knockoff reshade effect. Experiment!

I'm watching the documentary really fast now I'm in the middle of episode 3 and I want to take a break because I have life lol and then this is the thumbnail on my netflix

Anyway, I also have skimmed everything beforehand and they did skip a lot of Take That stuff. Might have cut some based from the footages I see on the trailer that don't appear on the actual cut, which makes sense, he doesn't want to overshadow his friends or painted weird pictures when they're about to release an album around a week from now. He once again said he felt sorry of everything he did to Gary in front of Teddy as if she is Gary, that's interesting. I wanna know what you guys think when you get to this part.

And oh yea, they show Teddy a lot here, front side. But it's only her maybe because she's now 11 and old enough to be shown to camera and besides she is the only Rob's children ever shown her face to public, the rest of her siblings never. I'm pretty sure we're gonna see a lot of her faces from this documentary soon. I'd love to screenshots but Netflix doesn't allow you to do that and I'm too lazy to try bypass that. I just wait until someone do it. Anyway, she looks so beautiful and grown up now. She sings her own song on piano at the end. Her dad's pride and joy.

Tbf, I have never really seen Nobody Someday and I don't know how many footage from that documentary re used for this documentary but I feel like there are a lot because I have seen the bits and they look somewhat familiar. The new stuffs mostly come from Guy Chambers camera which surprise me that they dig his relationship with Guy a lot although at the end weird that they didn't mention Guy has now returned since. It's like if people don't follow Robbie Williams a lot they would think his best songwriter has left him and never return. Well, he has returned and remain each other's best friends. In fact, Robbie's stuffs post Take That reunion since 2013 are produced by Guy Chambers. Also they talked about Nicole Appleton and Geri ginger spice, but we already know that, except now there are more footages.

And the story stops in 2011. The ending is when he reunited with Take That and then skipped to present when he is now living his life well with his family.

Tl;dr if you are big Robbie Williams fans and have watched documentaries and biographies about him and follow Ayda on instagram, there is nothing you haven't known yet. If you like Robbie because you like Take That or vice versa, there is also nothing you haven't known yet.

Also Tl;dr this is bad documentary for someone who never know Robbie Williams before.

how I edit my sims screenshots without a tablet and downloading a program

So, I’m lazy. I own Clip Studio Paint and I own a tablet, but when I’m playing the sims I’m 90% of the time too lazy to paint over my pictures. But I’m still a sucker for ✨aesthetic✨ and I’ve been asked how I do it, so here’s a guide on how to! It might seem long but trust me, it’s super easy, especially when you get used to it.

First things to consider (but not essential)

○ Reshade makes all the difference! You can follow this tutorial without one and I will show you how you can work around it, but it really helps a lot because it acts like a lovely filter in-game. I recommend Gshade because it’s easy to disable so you can just turn it on when you need screenshots. It also has a lot of pre-made presets and supports reshade presets.

note: Gshade also has this really cool function that allows you to cut out the background immediately in-game, which works if you have a flat CAS background (either default or custom). You can disable this when you’re finished taking screencaps as it turns the ‘transparent’ bits bright green in game, but saves as transparent.

○ Don’t want to / can’t install reshade/gshade? No worries, they are basically in-game photoshop. All you need is some psd (you don’t need photoshop to follow follow this step, trust!). I really reccomend intramoon’s psd/actions, so download the ones you like! You can also search for ‘psd download’ on tumblr and there will be plenty you can choose from.

Now to the actual editing! (aka the less boring bits)

1. Go to photopea.com and open your screenshot there by clicking “Open From Computer”. Photopea is entirely free and supports psd files too!

2. (Skip this if you want to keep your background) Assuming you didn’t activate ChromaKey with Gshade (skip this step if you did) - long press the eraser tool and pick “Background Eraser”. Do your magic.

note: you might want to fiddle with the brush size and “mode” depending on what results you get.

3. (Skip this if you kept your background) If you want to put a new background in, I recommend Pexels.com and search for “abstract background” or whatever you’d like. Once you’ve found one you like, download it.

Open your background in PhotoPea. However, do it through Open > Open & Place

Then resize the image that got imported and put it behind your sim. Bam, there’s your background!

If you’re happy with how it’s looking, merge the layers by right clicking your sim layer and click “Merge Down”

4. (skip this step if you don’t want to use any psds) Open your .psd by clicking “Open”

Then select all the layers and press Ctrl+C

Switch tab and go to the file you were working with, you can find your tabs underneath the top menu

Then once you’re there, press Ctrl+V and your .psd layers will import to that file. Now adjust it accordingly, it might require experimenting since all psd files are different. I typically just collapse the folder (if they have it) and lower the opacity.

Then once you’re finished, select all your layers and select “Flatten Image”

5. (Skip this if you used reshade) To add a soft glow, duplicate the layer by right clicking on it, select “Duplicate Layer” and then change the layer to “Overlay”. It will look extremely bright but don’t worry about that for now!

Go to Filter and press Blur > Gaussian Blur, then press OK.

Then lower the opacity to make it less bright. I usually have it very low, around 15 - 30%

6. Now it’s time to fix the jagged edges. Duplicate Layer by right clicking or press Ctrl+J

Go to Filter > Liquify

Now zoom in on the areas that stick out to you, that you’d like smoothed. Using the liquify brush, carefully manipulate the image until it looks how you’d like. You might have to play around with the settings, but I usually just change the brush size.

When you’re finished, press OK.

6. Now to polish your piece! Press Ctrl+J to duplicate your layer and then go to Filter > Stylize > Oil Paint

Untick “lighting” to get rid of the squiggly lines. t should now just look smooth, press OK.

Now go to eraser tool (you might have to hold it to get out of the “background eraser”. go to the brush settings and pick a soft brush, you can also adjust the size there.

Use the eraser to get back any detail that was lost when you used the oil paint effect. Usually this is around the eyes, but do it anywhere you feel like you want the detail restored. Click Ctrl+E to merge the layers once you’re finished, or use the flatten image method.

7. Duplicating the layer again (Ctrl+J), to get a more illustrated effect go to Filter > Blur > Surface Blur, then click OK. Repeat the Same process as you did at step 6 where you use the eraser brush to restore any detail lost (usually the hair), and then press Ctrl+E once you’re finished to merge your layer once more.

8. To add depth to the layer, duplicate the layer (Ctrl+J) and press Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Change the radius to something low-ish and press OK.

Then using a bigger eraser brush, focus on the middle of the face/body, leaving the edges of the body/hair and background blurry. Then flatten the image once you’re finished (Ctrl+E)

9. To make ambient light, duplicate layer (Ctrl+J) and set the layer to Multiply. It will look very dark.

Click Ctrl+U and you will get a window that says “Hue Saturation”. Change it to a bit unnatural colour, I usually like pinkish tones but feel free to experiment. Don’t worry if it doesn’t look good right now. Lower the opacity a little bit, but not a lot. You still wand it to look a little odd.

Click on the black and white squares to make your colours black and white. Press the two arrows beneath it so that the white colour in top, then press on the Gradient Tool. Then go to the Menu and select the second option.

Use the gradient tool from one of the corners (select only one corner, feel free to experiment which one! All gives a different vibe), and drag it so that half is light and half still looks dark. Once you’re satisfied, flatten the image. (Ctrl+E)

10. For the last (and easiest step), sharpen your image. This time you don’t have to mess with the layers, just go to Filter > Sharpen and pick any of the sharpen options, I personally like Sharpen More. This maks the facial features pop.

That’s it! Simple, and trust me, the more times you do this, the easier it gets. ♥ I hope this was of any help!

1. What’s your favourite sims death?

Hum, tough one. I guess being struck by lighting is pretty cool, not that I get to see it that often. Also being hit by a satellite, but I’ve literally never seen it happen in my game unless I cheat.

2. Alpha CC or Maxis Match?

Alpha, obviously. Although I prefer to call my style ‘semi-realistic’.

3. Do you cheat when your sims gain weight?

I used to, but now I’m like, nah. Let those sims have some meat on their bones!

4. Do you use move objects?

All the time, bruh.

5. Favorite mod?

If I only had to pick one, then Gunmod’s radiance lighting. Picked based on the fact that it’s always the first mod I get whenever I have to reinstall.

6. First expansion/game/stuff pack you got?

I think it was Nightlife? But my PC from back then was so weak that I couldn’t get the EP to work at all, save for a couple outfits that were randomly showing up in CAS.

7. Do you pronounce “live mode” like aLIVE or LIVing?

Been pronouncing it ‘aLive mode’ ever since I started simming. I never even knew there was a debate about it until I saw a post on simblr some years ago.

8. Who’s your favorite sim that you’ve made?

What, just one? D: I have a bunch of faves, and you can probably tell who they are by the fact that they crop up in every new iteration of my game.

9. Have you made a simself?

Never, nor do I plan to! Having a sim version of myself in the game would just feel weird.

10. What sim traits do you give yourself?

I don’t know them all by heart and I’m too lazy to google 'em, so pass. xD

11. Which is your favorite EA hair color?

I wouldn’t say that I necessarily have a favorite, but I noticed a lot of my sims tend to have black hair.

Imma go with hairshortcombed solely based on the fact that I don’t have a burning urge to replace it the second I see it in my game.

13. Favorite life stage?

Adults, duh. And teens. They’re pretty fun too.

14. Are you a builder or are you in it for the gameplay?

I do a bit of everything, but I definitely lean more towards gameplay, especially since starting my BaCC.

I think it’s gotten more consistent? I’ve been trying to find a balance between realistic and cartoony cc to maintain that elusive ‘semi-realistic’ look that I’m so fond of, and I like to think that I have a pretty good grasp on it now, after so many years of simming.

Never had one, lol.

22. Who’s your favorite CC creator?

One favorite cc creator? BRUH. I have a 10GB downloads folder, and you better believe every creator whose cc is in there is my favorite! 🤣

11 years! Golly, has it really been that long?

24. How do you edit your pictures?

By offering a blood sacrifice on a full moon. Nah, kidding. No blood is spilled during my editing process, though it does feel that way sometimes, considering how effin' long it takes me to iron out all the small kinks that annoy me about my screenshots. I kinda hoped having a dedicated photoshop action would help, but it only speeds up the process so much, unfortunately. :(

25. What expansion/game/stuff pack do you want next?

For Sims 2? Dunno man. Maybe a higher-res remake with all existing EPs/SPs and all known issues ironed out. Which is probably never gonna happen, but a girl can dream, right?

25. What expansion/game/stuff pack is your favorite so far?

I’m partial to Apartment Life because it introduced witches, one of my favorite supernatural life states!

main posting: outfits

this isn't really an outfit timeline, moreso a bit of rambling & putting my transmogs in a rough estimate

so! up until they were five, hanni lived with their biological parents and their krewe. they wore pretty typical asuran clothing, although focused on durability and often patched. they weren't really enrolled in traditional education and the camp wasn't all that fortified, which left a lot of time and space for exploring the environment and playing in the dirt. few pieces of clothing survived past the first week without a tear or stain.

after their parents' death and getting adopted by their dad, the general cleanliness and condition of their clothes didn't change much (although now with the added stains of motor oil & grease), but they mostly wore whatever was available - which rarely included actual asuran outfits, so far from any major settlement. most of the time the pieces were refitted for them by a neighbor.

they entered college with a fresh new batch of asuran robes, which they eventually switched out for clothes in more human-leaning style, once it became clear that fitting in wasn't going to happen and their peers wouldn't stop being assholes about their human dad.

during their adventuring years they continued the trend of 'just wear whatever's available until it needs to be replaced' - just with more armored clothing. they needed to be replaced very, very often.

adding a readmore for the dash's sake

the war on zhaitan saw them equipped with quality armor (heh)(see screenshot nr.1)(ignore the wings i forgor to turn them off), that got another polish once they became the commander.

the second screenshot is their main outfit and the one they probably wear the most. they picked the coat up fighting the aetherblades. they never specified if they looted the quarters or if it's simply taken off of a corpse. (i don't think anyone particularily wants to know anyway). the original coat has since gotten irreparably damaged, but they've commissioned multiple replacements since.

third one is their Official LookTM for the maguuma campaign. technically it still is their 'professional' outfit for pact pr etc but as you can imagine it doesn't hold the best associations for them.

fourth outfits is vaguely somewhere between HoT and dying in PoF, but also far from their favourite. they aren't entirely sure what they were thinking putting this armor suit together but oh well. at least it works, right? right. (the orange colour scheme is what i like to pass off as foreshadowing)

they pick up the fifth transmog after defeating balthazar, mainly to avoid showing their now orange hair and eyes (before that they had dark brown hair and blue eyes (i took some screens of the tmk preview but i'm too lazy to add them rn. maybe tomorrow)). the wings are schroedinger's canon don't ask me i don't know. they're very pretty tho.

last one is roughly EoD going into SotO. air filtration device was from gyala delve obviously. zojja gave them the coat as a 'souvenir'.
