this says a lot about Snape's character development for me. There are many parallels drawn throughout the series between Harry and Snape; obviously, they're very different characters but there are similarities too.

I think here Snape is talking about himself. The teenaged Snape we see in the Pensieve is very much like this- emotional, heart on his sleeve, easily provoked, a definite wallower in sad memories... weak. Adult Snape, though he retains some of these characteristics that do emerge in stressful moments (in PoA we see how angrily he reacts to Sirius's escape, for instance) on the whole is a great deal more thoughtful, reserved, calculating, measured.

I think that Snape at some point had to force himself to become this. I think he actually relates to Harry here, and is giving him advice based on personal experience. In my fic he begins to learn to control his emotions partially out of a desire to protect Lily; he's fully aware that she's his weakness (or really, his strength, viewed a different way) and that openly displaying any sort of emotion towards her at all makes her vulnerable to the likes of Avery and Mulciber, who will have the perfect weapon to get to him if they want to.

Severus doesn't have the advantages of his peers, he's not pureblood, he wasn't born into money. If he wants to join the Death Eaters and rise in their ranks, he needs to be subtle, cunning, careful. he can't afford to be careless and entitled like mulciber or bellatrix or even sirius. what he's got to offer isn't his name or his money, it's his sheer talent and cleverness. moving on:

When Voldemort decides to go after Lily this becomes even more important. Imo the reason why Voldemort believes that Snape only "desired" Lily is because that's what Snape told him. He lied to Voldemort's face and told him something probably disgusting tbh because that's the only way Voldemort would accept it and agree, if it was a selfish, callous request that Voldemort could understand. We can see evidence of this here:

Asking Voldemort to spare a mudblood because he was in love with her would likely not have gone over well- and as we know, Voldemort actually bore his request in mind, though obv didn't give enough of a fuck about Snape to follow through. Because although asking voldemort to spare her must have taken serious balls, Snape's mistake here was trusting someone inherently selfish to do something selfless for him.

Clearly he immediately realises this and goes to Dumbledore, which is when controlling his emotions becomes of paramount importance, because now he's working against perhaps the most highly accomplished legilimens of all time.

It's also interesting to me that Snape in this conversation is probably the character who is most forthright and informative with Harry in the whole of OotP until Dumbledore at the end; Harry actually learns a lot in this conversation. And Snape also kind of gives him credit which is interesting too:

like for Snape that's high praise lmao. A shame because if he wasn't so bitter (i.e. didn't wear his heart on his sleeve so much around harry) then he might have actually been pretty helpful to Harry and a decent teacher. Again, during the Occlumency lessons his unrestrained emotion brought up by memories of James is a hindrance. He defies Dumbledore's orders to teach Harry Occlumency because of his emotional response to SWM, as well as honestly doing kind of a shit job before that (by not being empathetic and teaching Harry in a way that would've been actually productive.)

At this point Dumbledore believes that Harry learning Occlumency and controlling his emotions is of vital importance; he turns out to be wrong about this. In Harry's case, it turns out to be his emotional nature that saves him- unlike Snape, who is the opposite. Snape's journey is about learning that some things are more important than his selfish need to give into his own emotions.

By DH Snape's learned this lesson fully; his old hatred for James doesn't stop him from doing what has to be done, from giving Harry the tools he needs. Even in the final moments of his life, he can look past James and see Lily in Harry- and, by giving Harry the information that leads to his self-sacrifice, he can let her go.

Hi guys I’m back! Life’s been...catastrophic BUT that’s for another day so enough on that and lets quickly redirect and focus on the fact that reading requests are open again!! Pile I. A Wink Worth Billions

Stop being so cheeky pile 1. We get it you’re god’s favorite damn. Literally what other cards could have been more perfect?? Pile 1 get ready for the prettiest Valentine’s Day ever. Most of you haven’t had a Valentine’s Day where things went right, and this person wants to make sure that it goes perfect. Honestly your first Valentines will probably be spent in the early stages of your relationship. Like I’m not getting that you guys will be together for a long time before Valentine’s comes. So you both are in the state of mind of wondering if you both should play it cool and go casual your first year or if you guys should actually go all out and throw caution to the wind. And you know the thing about you both being together is that you both immediately feel the love with one another.

You both don’t fall in love gradually, it’s more like it comes hard and strong and one minute you both are meeting and the next you both are scrolling for hours on your phones trying to come up with the perfect gift. As I was writing this I got the vision of one of you going back on text convo’s to see if the other person has mentioned something they’d want or liked. Like that’s how much one of you is stressing. Although I don’t think it’s in a bad way, more like in a “the possibilities on what we can do are endless” kind of way. For the people that are barely getting to know your person, because I do feel like there’s that select few who won’t be serious with their F/S on Valentines, will be asked to bring things to a next level that day. Say we have a couple who’s barely getting to know each other and want to take it to the next level, the more masculine energy of the two will be more proactive and plan to make the connection more serious. For the people that are already in a relationship with their F/S the day off, I’m getting that they might pop a big question the day off. I’m not getting marriage lmao don’t worry, more like talk on the future like moving on or meeting each other’s parents. Or even planning a trip. Something that signifies making things more serious.

Also, I think that the masculine energy in this connection could be feeling real nervous about planning this as well lmao. Like there’s an element of “things are going so well, I don’t want to mess it up” combined with “but things would be even better if they said yes.” Ultimately I think your first valentines will make you both stronger at each other’s side. The bond will be strengthened and new steps will be taken moving forward. So to recap, with the masculine energy it’s going to be all about planning an event around making your relationship more serious. Something pretty that strengthens your unions. And for the other in this connection, it will be more focused on finding the perfect gift. Finding a gift that’s perfect for them but also doesn’t look like they’re coming on too strong. Lmao the energy the other person is exuding is equally as nervous, they’re going to want to take it further as well but will at the same time be nervous about initiating the conversation. You both will be wearing darker clothing and if makeup is involved it’s more on the lighter side. Kind of elegant chic. NOW for a special select bunch of you I do see a proposal. I know, I’m sorry!! This is just for a select few of you I promise, and it’ll have to do more with you both being friends before the connection even started. Cause again, the love is still new, but sometimes when you have a long story with someone you just want to marry them as soon as you finally have them in your arms. So nothing out of the blue, don’t worry, more so this is for those going from friends to lovers. Also there will definitely be s8x okay that’s it bye.

baby pile two’s you are all so stubborn. And your future spouse is too. You guys probably have known each other a long time before you guys actually spend a Valentine’s day together. I’m getting almost like a sad vibe here? Like one of you has physically watched the other go on dates and so on in Valentines day. It could be that you both were friends before you were lovers and going out together is something new but also bittersweet? One of you keeps thinking what it would be like if you both just realized sooner and got together earlier. You guys both want this to be beautiful and right and amazing but you two don’t want to communicate when trying to talk about it. You both are acting like you guys are on the same page when I’m not even sure you guys are reading the same book

. You both are acting like this is no big deal because the other person is doing so as well. But in reality it’s a very big deal and you guys want to rejoice that finally!! you guys are together. You both might be talking to your friends and family members like “I just want this to be special”, and the whole time the other person assumes that you guys aren’t excited. Like I mean this probably happens and goes on until either a day before or the very day of the event. I even think you both argue when the truth comes out. The feminine energy in this connection will not lash out but rather retreat inward and stop talking? Almost like they want to complain but they’re going to feel like they’re making a big deal out of nothing and will retreat forward. Now I think the masculine energy in this connection is more new to this whole dating and emotions thing, and even though they don’t really understand how to fix this (that’s also been bugging them) they don’t want to be shut out on a day where things are supposed to be happy and okay. So I think they approach but it just spirals into a fight. Again you both are soo stubborn so you both will probably be just afraid to admit that you want this day to be celebrated more.

I can see you both arguing. Until one of you just snaps and admits that it’s not fair. As I wrote this I started to hear what it would sound like and it not only sounds, but it feels very in the heat of the moment. “I wanted this to be special and you don’t even care.” is what I heard. The other’s very confused, not even sure about what they’re talking about until they start piecing it together. I imagine it going from something very tense and angry to still and warm. A trickle of realization and hope. The masculine energy was the one doing the prodding I think, asking a bunch of questions in alarms and defensiveness. Asking what they did and why are they being ignored. The other then suddenly getting fed up and blowing up. Telling them the truth just to shut them up. I think that you guys are then going to be silent for some time before eventually talking and apologizing. It sounds almost like you both are then taking the time to finally talk about your feelings and leave it all out in the open. After time, we have the chariot card describing the last of it so I can see you both deciding to do something. A quick plan where you both have a destination in mind. One of you is smiling softly while the other’s making quick jokes as they drive over there. Hands are being held and smiles are being shared. Lots of eye contact once you both arrive to wherever it is you went.

No letting go. + Little additional tidbits I can see is the plans being made after the argument being very adventurous. Maybe it’s a long drive to where you both are going but it’s a celebration to the realization of feelings. A celebration that should’ve been planned a long time ago. I can see you both touching each other a lot as well. Hands around the waist of the others, neck kisses, kisses on the top of the head, etc. I think people didn’t really expect you guys to last long either or even have much in common which is why it was even more important that you guys celebrated the day of love together, and when you weren’t doing it like it deserved you both felt bummed. We have the masculine being more of a social butterfly in this case so yeah they’re definitely going to be the one that is badgering and demanding to fix the problem. In this case I could see the feminine being more of an introvert and instead choosing to keep it all in. Yeah, to end this off, I do see a long drive ahead of you both when you choose where to go.

Pile three you guys are the ultimate couple. Now let me start by saying this, MONEY IS BEING SPENT here. Like loads of money. I don’t know if you guys know about the couples that spend close to thousands of dollars for Valentine’s day and treat if like it’s nothing big? Yeah that’s you both. There are some cultures where it’s like that, where Valentines day is meant to be celebrated in big and meant to go crazy with the theatrics and you both do not disappoint. To be completely honest with you, I keep trying to summon the energy of you guys individually but it doesn’t really come out leading me to believe that you both are locked in and really solid when the days rolls by. Are you guys the type of people that lose their identity when they fall in love? No. That being said, are you guys so enamored that you both think of each other as their world? Yes. So do you both not want to talk to anyone but your own partner the day of Valentines? Again yes lmao.

This is kind of giving me Scorpio Venus energy. Like “I share you every day please just be mine for today.” Or days. Like mentioned before your partner wants to go big. And its liely that each year aftet that they’ll go bigger until they run out of ideas and even then they’ll ask around if that’s’ their last option. Why last option? Your person likes thinking of their plans for you. They pride themselves in being the one that knows you the most. They pride themselves in having you see how much effort they put into their gift since to them, their act of service, means more than just picking something out. I could see you both going out to little Valentines day parties before the actual day and people asking you and your FS what you’ll be doing and your FS just grabbing onto you and shaking their head. They’ll be telling no one about their plans by the way, they don’t care for others telling them if it’s a good idea or not like this person is so confident in their abilities of knowing you lmao. I can see them planning a trip for you both. Almost like a surprise getaway. It could be to an actual spot outside the country or to something as simple as a weekend spa. Whatever it is it will only involve you both. It’s going to be their version of a relax spot away from the world. Away from problems and into a world shared only by you two.

Like I said this is so Scorpio Venus, because even though it looks very flashy and big, all you both really crave are closeness and intimacy. There’s layers to this. Sweet words are exchanged. Thousands of I love you’s. I think you guys might even be told by other people that see you what a wonderful couple you two make. You both are also very patient with one another in the days you disappear. No rushing, just relaxation and love. Walking to a restaurant holding hands and buying flowers from someone nearby. Feeling the night warm up and being able to wear a more revealing outfit. This is another reason as to why I think you both are going to go on vacation, when trying to intuitively channel I get hot and humid weather. The kind that makes hair curl. So to recap it would be something beautiful because of the attention to detail. Everything done bigger than need be. But at the same time it’s special because of the intimacy that you both share. It’s quiet in the way that there’s peace but electric because of the sensation you keep on sharing that “hey! I think they might be the one.” + additional tidbits I’d like to add would be that the feminine energy in this connection is holding on more. Kissing, hugging, they’re the one initiating the contact. The date you go to before this happens ends up being your future spouse. It’s exciting and fresh and new and honestly no one can blame you from being excited. They’re intelligent, well-spoken and charming. I mean they seem like the complete package. Like I mentioned before you probably haven’t had the best of luck with love when you’re close to meeting them. It’s possible that you could’ve just gone through a break up that left you feeling emotionally battered. You’re not wanting to do the whole love thing anymore. Ever dated someone that made you lose your spark? Your previous relationship will have you feeling like this. You’ve gone from being someone full of life, vivacious and bold to maybe someone more insecure and guarded. Protected. So going on a date was something really big for you.

And then going on a date on Valentines day? Something even bigger. But I don’t think you’re getting your hopes up. Almost like you’re excited because speaking with this person was fun. But at the same time, you’re just going with the flow. Letting things fall where they may. They on the other hand, are coming ready. Like they have thought and thought of about a million things they could possibly do at your side that wouldn’t be too much or too boring. You know it’s funny how most of the piles have been trying to keep between that imaginary line of it being just perfect and not too this and not too that. Like Goldilocks, it must be just right. I can see them checking the reviews for places on Yelp or just talking to people around them on what places would be good to dine in or what places they’ve gone to that a person like you would like. I got the funny image of them describing you to the person they talk to like “they’re like this and they do this and etc.” and honestly, they might just nail it. This is a more lighthearted version of Valentines.

There’s shy looks and glances but also hand holding and the occasional kiss. There’s so much banter and dry wit passed around too. I get the image of you both talking with big smiles on your faces as you eat dinner. It’s not like your trying to keep the smile up, it’s more like it won’t like your face. You both are just so amused with each other, like you’ve met your perfect match. You share the same humor and you see of yourself in each other. What they are is what you are as well. I think you both start acting much more romantic as the night is ending. Like you guys start seeing at each other’s lips, or casually touching at each other more. The attraction is real, but so it the chemistry between you as people. So to recap, we have you and this person being together after a tough period in your life. Nothing serious but leading up to it as the night goes on. + Additional tidbits I get from this pile is the Aries like behavior that you both have when together. Being brave and bold with one another, laughing and teasing the other person. They will be more well off than you are so be prepared to have them pay for everything. This is the type of person that even because it’s your first dates out with each other, they will not allow you to contribute a single penny. They’re definitely more affectionate as well, you being more awkward and not knowing how to respond to the flirtatious remarks but being a pro at handling the teasing. They’re very well spoken like I mentioned earlier so be careful cause they are great at flirting and making someone blush. You both talk about interests a lot the day of Valentines, and you guys could focus a lot on doing little things for each other. For example, say you go out to dinner; one person will put their hand on the small of the back of the other, push out their chair, etc. You both will be very attentive to the needs of the other person. I could see them also being in a field having to do with Law, that message came to me very randomly but take that as you may.

Hope whoever did request it sees this! I went kinda hard on this bc I have posted Min on this blog ONE time. and that's a crime.

forgot to screenshot this one to, but an anon suggested: Hu patching up Ace after he falls off of a horse. I feel like even if Hu and Ace don't get along, she'd try to come to his games to support him once in a while as the mom of the group! (even if Ace is her least favorite child.) In like 90 degree heat she'd pull up, with enough sunscreen and waterbottles to keep everyone in a 70 mile radius hydrated and safe from skin cancer. And she wouldn't hesitate to help Ace if he gets hurt, ofc!

There's not much written about Slasher! Papyrus (Chess), but he is still one of my absolute favorites; that's how great of a character that you have created!💜 I just love the idea of a Papyrus making puzzles that are dangerous and actually hard to get out of. It also does not help that I love puzzles, mazes, and solving mystery board games!

May I request the moment where after going on multiple dates, Chess confesses to Y/N?

Okay I know that I have like thirty other requests that I need to do but I love Chess so much that I just have to do this one asdkfjlasdf Also, I'm not sure if you meant confess as in "I love you" or confess as in "I'm a murderer," so I'm gonna go with the second one because that's more dramatic lmao

Chess looked around his home nervously. He had invited you over for a "ROMANTIC NIGHT THAT WILL KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF!" Which was true! The dining room was lit by candles, the curtains were drawn, and he had made a delicious dinner, including all your favorites. However, he had ulterior motives.

Tonight was the night he was going to tell you. He is the Jigsaw Killer.

Sans had tried to talk him out of it multiple times. "ya got a good thing goin'," Sans had argued. "i don't want ya to lose 'em just because they have 'morals'." He had made finger quotes around the last word.

"WE HAVE MORALS TOO!"

"yeah, sure, but the non-killing type of morals."

Sans had brought up a good point, but Papyrus knew that he couldn't keep this part of his life secret forever. Much better to hear it from him, rather than for you to put the pieces together yourself.

Besides, that's why he had some...failsafes in place. The chloroform rag in his pocket seemed to weigh heavy.

Finally, a knock on the door. Immediately, Papyrus put on his cheerful, carefree mask. He opened the door, and beamed down at you.

"WELCOME! I HOPE YOU'RE READY FOR THE GREATEST DINNER YOUR TASTE BUDS HAVE EVER BEHELD!" he announced dramatically.

You laughed softly. Stars, Papyrus loved your laugh. "I sure am! Thanks for this, by the way, you're always so thoughtful."

Papyrus tried to hide how flustered he was by your compliments. "I KNOW, I'M THE GREATEST!"

"You sure are!" Gently, you tugged Papyrus down to your level and pressed a kiss to his cheek.

Now blushing profusely, Papyrus led you to the table. He wanted to make everything as nice as possible before he dropped...admittedly a pretty big bombshell on you. Despite his best efforts to treat you as well as he could, his nervousness was clearly shining through.

About halfway through your dinner, you finally brought it up. "You seem worried," you probed carefully. "Is something wrong?" You looked away anxiously. "Is something wrong with...us?"

YES, ER, NO, I MEAN..." Papyrus groaned and put his head in his hands. "WHAT I MEAN IS, IT'S NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU! YOU'RE WONDERFUL!!" He reached across the table and grabbed your hands. "IT'S...ME."

You frowned. "Are you cheating on me?"

"NO!!!! I WOULD NEVER!" Papyrus was aghast that you would even think such a thing. "I LOVE YOU!"

Your shoulders relaxed. "I love you too. But if it's not that, then what's the problem?"

"WELL, UM..." Papyrus was sweating now.

"You can tell me anything," you said gently.

Papyrus took a deep breath. ".....I'M THE JIGSAW KILLER."

There was a long moment of silence. Then, you started to laugh. Hard.

"THAT...WAS NOT THE REACTION I WAS EXPECTING."

You wiped a tear from your eye, still giggling a bit. "Oh come on, Papyrus! You? A killer? You're too sweet!"

"WELL, YES, I AM, BUT-"

"I would expect something like this from Sans, but you? You really had me going!"

You chuckled, clearly expecting Papyrus to join in. Instead, Papyrus let his cheerful mask drop. He stared you down with a deadly serious gaze.

After a moment, you stopped. "Oh my god...you're for real. You actually mean it."

Papyrus stood, stalking slowly around the table. "I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE 'FOR REAL' IN MY LIFE." He put his hand on the back of your chair, effectively pinning you to the furniture. "But I Would Never, Ever Hurt You."

Despite his words, Papyrus easily recognized the terror in your eyes. It was an all-too familiar expression that he had never wanted to see on you. Your breath was fast now, and Papyrus could practically hear your panicked heartbeat. "H-how can I trust you?"

"It's Still Me, My Darling," Papyrus said gently. "I Haven't Changed! But Now You Know The Truth."

"You're a murderer!"

Papyrus gently pushed some hair away from your face. Usually, you would lean into his touch, but now, you flinched away. "I Keep You Safe, My Love. You Never Have To Be Afraid Around Me."

Reluctantly, Papyrus stepped back. The candlelight flickered, casting eerie shadows across his face. He held his arms out, as if for a hug. "What Do You Say?"

For a long, long moment, you just stared. Then, in a blink, you jumped up and sprinted for the door.

Papyrus sighed. "How Disappointing."

You slammed against the door, and almost screamed when you realized that it was firmly locked. "I Thought You Could Help Us. You Have Such Wonderful Ideas! You're So Creative! You Could Have Helped Us Make The World Better."

"Please, Papyrus, let me go," you stammered.

"I'm Sorry, But I Can't. Not Until You Learn To Accept This." You attempted to open a window, only to find that there was a magic barrier around it, making you unable to even touch it.

Papyrus saw your muscles tense, ready to fight. However, before you could turn around or even scream, Papyrus grabbed you tight and held the chloroform rag to your face.

"It's Alright, Just Relax," Papyrus whispered in your ear. "Sleep, My Darling."

You were obviously holding your breath as you struggled in his arms, but before long, you were forced to take in a breath. Papyrus waited, counting carefully in his head, until you went limp. Carefully, he adjusted so that he was holding you bridal style. "I'm Sorry," he whispered. "But This Is The Only Way We Can Be Together."

Without jostling you too much, Papyrus carried you to the basement. He had prepared a room for you, just in case. It was as nice as he could make it, complete with a bed, a bookcase, and even some of your favorite video games and movies. It was nice to be able to put his talents into making something non-deadly for once, though there were still plenty of traps in case you tried anything once you woke up.

As if you were made of glass, Papyrus set you on the bed. He pressed a kiss to your forehead. "Now We'll Be Together. Forever."

It's rude and out of pocket REGARDLESS but I also think you're a little hard on yourself! oh absolutely! i have a feeling you're right abt what they meant considering i saw the transphobic comment they made a couple posts down on their blog lmao but i wanted to add that part anyway. and i appreciate your words a ton, but dw im not hurt or upset! i get a lot of weird comments all the time, i just wanted to use that one as a platform to bounce off of a thought ive been having lately. i wouldn't post a negative remark like that unless i wanted to use it for something. the actual comment was mostly irrelevant to the point i wanted to make, which is also not meant to be super serious, just a thought soup to stir around

and i mean my interpretation of my art as purely objective, i think its important to think critically about yourself and in general. from an objective standpoint, i dont believe the way shes drawn is too out of the norm and is fairly tame (disregarding her ox/bull parts lol), thats basically what i was aiming for with that section. i constantly get stuck in a rut without improving by much because im usually just drawing to doodle after a school day and not rlly with any purpose. i tend to keep drawing the same things out of habit and it gets stale really quickly. so i know my faults and im rlly looking forward to getting better!

also rq, what you said about how we need to draw more than conventionally attractive people- while i do agree with that, in my post i was more saying its important for people to be more open-minded about how they view gender expression and attractiveness in general, myself included! i dont think how i drew charlie was very revolutionary, but ive seen so many tags speaking otherwise. which is either reflective of how small the bubble is for whats acceptable or maybe i have a skewed perception of things? for example if having a bush or something is gender envy we need to look at ourselves. bush is so normal to me. (which i dont if thats what even drew ppl to it BUT. just as an example). would those same people say the same if i drew a very fat woman with a beard, unibrow, etc.? i have no idea. but i have had my eyes opened so many times before its incredible. little things ive never thought about before through new perspective. so thats why i want to encourage it too. i hope that makes sense. thank you so much i hope you have an equally lovely day!! 🫶🫶

ive always really liked picking apart different animation styles, and how things are done, but if you know me you know my favorite thing to look at is expressions. more specifically, eyes. they convey so much emotion its actually insane, and the different ways people draw them?? omomomohmomhonohn

so here have a post about my favorite ways that animes have drawn eyes (ft. tokyo ghoul, demon slayer, bungou stray dogs, and chainsaw man)

TOKYO GHOUL RAHHHHH no one does horror like them!!! this is so evident so early on in the scene where kaneki is trying to eat food after his stay in the hospital, and the terror of not being able to eat human food is finally setting in

and of course, we can't forget when he went outside for the first time after the accident

yeahhh. tokyo ghoul absolutely loves to white out the eyes, not entirely, but they make the pupils so small and their eyes HUGE. the TERROR that they portray is amazinggggg

demon slayer has the prettiest eyyesss!!!!!

ive always absolutely loved how they draw their eyes. its so colorful, so detailed!! the demon eyes are my favorite, especially the demons with numbers scratched into them.

i mean COME ONNNN, the color??? also, another early on show, when tanjiros family died and he came home to find out. the expressio they drew for him??? phenominal.

demon slayer likes to scrunch up the nose, and really throws in the mouth and the eyebrows too, while tokyo ghoul is almost entirely focused on the eyes (also the absolute peak voice acting omg)

oooo yess bungou stray dogs a personal favorite of mine now obviously every bsd fan knows that bsd loves to give us big fishbowl eyes during serious scenes

(the chuuya one is a personal favorite of mine but, i digress) despite how many jokes i make about this angle, i actually really like it. not only does it give bsd something significant that you can associate it with, but i think it does a really good job of making everything... a little unsettling especially in lucy's scene where shes describing them getting captured for the rest of their lives, but if they try to leave they'll forget everything, including their friends. and shes getting so much joy out of it, its meant to be a scary scene! and the fishbowl just adds that disturbance, this uncomfortableness bc atsushi is fucking going through it LMAO of course i have to talk about how they draw their eyes. the diamond shape is something ive always loved, with a color that somehow fits so well.

now FINALLY chainsaw man (i just started watching this show bear WITH ME)

i LOVE how csm draws their eyes. their so? detailed? they draw the little bits of the eyes that most animes dont

the way they draw makima's eyes is a personal favorite. i know from spoilers (rip) that she isnt quite human, and the way they draw her pupils different from everyone elses, with extra rings and them being an uncharacteristic bright color. the way they draw her eyes almost reminds me of a cat? my favorite thing tho, is the fact that they draw that little thing on the end that most people forget (the tear duct!!) it just makes them look so real, and when you get as close up to their eyes as you do in the anime, it almost makes you feel a bit uncomfortable, which is exactly what theyre going for considering the nature of the anime

he just looks so shocked. he fully believed he had died. he would forever starve, forever weighed down by his fathers debt. and all of a sudden, hes free, and none of it feels real.

🏳️‍🌈 A sexuality headcanon

Klieg is aromantic and gay :) Though I have imagined that he spent many years identifying as AroAce because his interest in romance and relationships was so non-existent it just never even occurred to him.

I feel he always knew he wasn't into women, and that paired with his general anxiety around sexual situations just lead him to take quite a while to connect the dots :)

He's aroallo but shy about it LMAO

👻 A headcanon about what scares them

He is scared of a lot of things, but I feel like one of the things that worries him the most is his whole impostor syndrome and the idea of losing everything he's worked so hard to get. :')

What good is he if he can't do the one thing he's good at?

🫂 A friendship headcanon

Klieg has a hard time figuring out when he is or isn't friends with people. And since he assumes that everyone hates or dislikes him by default, he does tend to be closed and hostile if he sees someone approach with dubious intentions.

His closest friendship is with Mittens as he has spent just enough time with her to be comfortable with her regarding her as Safe. He hasn't really told her this directly, but she can figure out quite easily that he trusts her the most and she wants to make sure he feels comfortable.

He's not very good at showing his appreciation for others, but he'll still try, usually in the form of favours. Like Mitts will happen to need help with something in the cooking channels and Klieg just immediately makes himself available to help her ;;

They're very good friends and I care them so much.

🪢 A headcanon about their family

Unless in cases like Button and Match, or Tenna, I don't tend to give my darkner characters family members or relatives ^^ They just exist on their own.

I can give headcanons about Klieg's future family though!

I imagine he would be really into making home films with Rouxls and Lancer, and eventually Lava as well!

Someone does have to take the camera from him because he starts treating the films like he's directing a serious movie and that is only cute for so long x)

🖕 A headcanon relating to anger

He's actually not as prone to anger as I've drawn him! He will get exalted and loud when working, but it's usually more out of a "These people only follow my instructions when I'm yelling them".

He is very passionate about his work and interests, and he will express himself in over-the-top ways, but it rarely comes out of a place of anger, only enthusiasm.

If you want to get him mad, you ask about his opinions on movies he hates, or you make him walk into a cinema where people have spilt popcorn on the floor and it's all sticky and gross :) That should get him worked up!

😬 A headcanon about the worst thing they’ve done

Countless dadaist cocomelon-esque movies at Tenna's request have been Klieg's worst cinematic crimes and he'd gladly exile himself if it means he must be confronted about it.

As I often am when I'm rotating in The Bad Place, I'm drawn to old loves and nostalgia for comfort, which is why I'm currently rereading the Dragonriders of Pern series.

I've already made my peace with some of the more eyebrow-raising scenes in my childhood beloved books (Anne was a 2nd wave feminist in the 60s, what can I say), but I'm up to Moreta and, oh my god it hits so different after the pandemic. AND NOT IN A GOOD WAY.

Titular protagonist Moreta, dragonlady of Pern. Such a Pernese legend that they wrote ballads about her that would be sung for generations to come.

And only now do I somehow see that she's a fucking idiot.

Seriously! She's Fort Weyr's healer, would have become a Master Healer if she hadn't become a dragonrider first. But she touches a mysteriously dying runnerbeast without any caution or even washing her damn hands afterwards (something she later admits to herself she only did to impress her new boy toy Alessan).

THEN because she doesn't want to face the fact that she may be infected, she instead questions the judgement of the fucking Masterhealer of Pern in calling a quarantine and flits about interacting with everyone as if nothing bad could ever happen. Her whole justification for this is "dragonriders are healthy, we simply won't get sick". WHAT. I'M SORRY?! You're a HEALER?! Do you know ANYTHING?!

The Pern setting is a little dark ages in the sense that, despite this being far in humanity's future, Pern's population has effectively regressed and forgotten a lot of science (and gender equality . . .). But even so, we can't pretend the healers don't know enough to understand the basic dos and don'ts of serious illnesses.

We know this because there is one person besides the Masterhealer who takes the situation seriously. And that is Sh'gall - Fort Weyrleader. He is rightly anxious about the prospect of a pandemic, he responsibly social-distances himself from other people in the Weyr because he knows he may have been infected, and he furiously enforces the quarantine, destroying his already utter lack of popularity.

And everyone, including the narrative, take the absolute piss out of him for it. Oh, silly Sh'gall! Such a worrywort. So over the top. Talk about exaggerating the risk. What a whiny pissbaby, says Moreta internally in not so many words.

Even after his concerns prove true, nobody acknowledges it. It's just "Oh well, it's done now, Sh'gall. Deal with it," from Miss I'm-Such-A-Great-Healer-I-Spread-Pandemic-To-My-Entire-Weyr.

Lmao.

Well, Sh'gall, it is years too late but I see you now. The title of this book should actually be Sh'gall: Smartest Dragonrider of Pern.

Let's hope the rest of the book redeems Moreta because at the moment I cannot like her anymore xD

Reverse-engineering Hokushin and Otake

I am very very close to finishing part 3 of fight / flight! So close…!! I decided to take a break with what was supposed to be a quick drawing but ended up going down reference rabbit holes oops. This is modern day (actual Yu Yu Hakusho series canon) Hokushin and Otake alongside my imagined early Kamakura-era versions of them in North Bound.

More commentary below the cut.

To figure out their relative heights, it was the usual game of Measuring Stick Yusuke, i.e., relying on the fact that every single character at some point has stood next to Yusuke, or next to someone who has stood next to Yusuke. In this case:

Hokushin is a head taller than Yusuke.

Otake is about half a head taller than adult Koenma.

Adult Koenma is half a head taller than Yusuke.

Therefore, Otake is about half a head taller than Hokushin. Success!!***

This is assuming nobody changed in height between 700 years ago and now lmao

(*** EDIT: I reread this post and was like, wait, what I wrote doesn't make sense. Measuring stick logic outlined above actually indicates that Hokushin and Otake would be about the same height lol. My logic failed. However, I went back to doublecheck my notes and the manga panels and "Otake is about half a head taller than adult Koenma" is little more than guesswork because they spend most of the time crouched next to each other and leaning slightly forward, so he could be anywhere from the same height to even a head taller. Ehhhhhh close enough. Again, 700 years, who's counting.)

Reverse engineering character designs to different ages/periods is always a fun exercise. Aside from new clothes, one of the easiest and most obvious things to do is to change up their hair! Super easy for these two. Give Hokushin hair, and shave Otake’s mustache off and give him a closer-to-period hairstyle instead of his Western-style cut. Done! But of course, a challenge is that for most visual storytelling purposes, you still need the character to be quickly recognizable.

To me, the really distinguishing aspect of Hokushin and Otake is how Togashi renders their eyes. This is where I find it particularly interesting, because both of them have very fixed eye styles. I personally struggle a lot with making them more expressive without feeling like I’m going super off-model. I have a lot more flexibility with Hokushin now because I’ve drawn him about a bajillion times, and through North Bound I’ve stretched the comfort level of how I can depict him. This is only Otake’s second appearance in North Bound (though it feels like a lot more because it’s taking me a while to draw all these parts of a story), so it’s been more challenging. Page 7 in fight / flight part 1 was difficult in terms of making him look intense. You can see what happens if I tried too hard to convey intensity with his eyes by checking out the sketch of the page - it doesn’t look like him anymore. (Sometimes that can work though, for drama especially when conveying something going off the wall and pushing their limits or shocking others with an about-face.)

Working through their designs allowed me to reflect on the parallels in their design and nature. Hokushin and Otake are both envoys of sorts for extremely ancient and powerful non-human masters, and naturally bring a lot of visual gravitas to that role. Neither of them are the sort of people who’re here to just chill and hang out, and their visual appearance and presence need to convey that.

Hokushin I’ve talked about before. Togashi draws him with these really low eyebrows and flat, dark eyes that almost never shift. This makes him look very serious, to the point of glowering. But through the magic of characterization, context and other little facial details, he feels a lot “softer” - friendlier and more approachable. On the flipside, Otake has very thick bushy eyebrows and beady eyes. His eyebrows are definitely much more mobile than Hokushin’s in the manga, and the styling has the potential of coming off almost comedic, but we never get that impression from him unless Togashi is actually drawing him in a situation where we’re intended to laugh at him (e.g., his reactions to Yusuke pretending to turn into an evil demon). Instead, he feels really serious - much more rigid and inflexible than Hokushin.

Part of this is due to reader perspective as well. Hokushin is a demon who eats humans, which is typically terrifying nightmare material. Otake, on the flipside, is the head of the Spirit World’s Special Defence Force, sent out to save the Human World and also stop a powerful demon from awakening, which sounds like a classic hero. But of course, Togashi has flipped them on their heads, at the most basic level simply by sheer virtue of their associations. Yusuke is the protagonist we’ve followed since volume 1; by the time we get to volume 16, we know him very well and have been rooting for him for all these pages. We can quickly recognize and identify his struggles even in challenging situations. Thus, Otake intent on killing Yusuke (permanently) makes us quick to judge him as villainous - or at the very least on the “wrong” side. Meanwhile, Hokushin appearing in Yusuke’s court, understanding Yusuke’s concerns and even giving answers that clearly align him with Yusuke’s values, immediately develops more benign associations. It’s interesting to compare and contrast them!

5. fighting style?

liah is a soldier and jedi guardian so she heavily emphasizes melee combat with fast and powerful strikes, aiming to dispatch her opponent before they can react or counterattack! she doesn't use force powers much besides augmenting her speed and mobility and the occasional force push when needed. she's a much more physical jedi than bastila or jolee for example.

jedi guardians can also use force jump to instantly close the distance to enemies and it's perfect for liah because she is the frontline fighter and will gladly jump right into the fray before the rest of the party has even drawn their weapons. just picture her zooming and flipping and spinning across the battlefield and just. destroying her enemies with the sheer force of her momentum. god she's so cool. in one in-game dialogue carth says "you've got the skills of an elite commando" and it's like. so true bestie.....

also liah uses a double-bladed lightsaber right. as a padawan she learned that the double-bladed lightsaber can deal more damage but is also more difficult to master than the common single-bladed one so obviously she decided she would have to master it. to challenge herself and to prove that she can. and also because the idea of being more powerful fascinated her. this was absolutely not a red flag and did not herald her fall to the dark side at all

12. what is their attitude towards winning?

to liah winning is something to be proud of and proof that all her training is paying off! she is confident in her skills and she goes into almost every battle with the mindset that she will win. and in a life-or-death situation she will of course do everything she can to ensure victory but in a less serious encounter - like the duel ring on taris - it's more about the opportunity to challenge herself and see how far she can push herself and how much better she can get. i mean she still takes it seriously and expects to win lmao but being the adrenaline junkie she is she's also there to have a good time and enjoy the thrill of the fight.

13. what is their attitude towards losing?

due to her (sometimes unfounded) confidence liah tends to forget that she's not invincible and can actually lose? and when she loses she becomes weirdly frustrated and retreats into the mini gym she set up inside the ebon hawk to blow off steam on the punching bag. but once the shock and anger wears off and her mind is clear she will meditate on what she can learn from the loss. and then she goes back to training to work on her weaknesses so she won't lose next time. it's that unwavering shonen protag style resolve baby

17. speed, strength or strategy?

speed and strength in equal measure? she's not stupid (i gave her 14 int in character creation bc a guide told me to ok) or incapable of devising strategies when a situation calls for it but she is reckless and so certain of her own abilities that most of the time she thinks she doesn't need any strategy besides "lightsaber go wWwoooOom"

this of course doesn't always work and liah will have to confront the harsh truth that she has weaknesses that the others can cover with their strengths. she eventually learns to listen to the more cautious companions and work together with them as a team 🫶

29. who do they want to fight the most?

carth lol... verbally at least. in an actual fight liah would most likely curb-stomp him so it's a good thing their arguments never turn physical. or do they 😳

to give a proper answer tho... malak i guess? like yea she wants to stop him but after the Reveal it becomes personal and she wants to 1v1 malak and will stop at nothing to strike him down herself. also not to get too deep abt this but like... she probably wants to fight herself more than anyone. would love to kick her own ass. unfortunately she can't fight herself physically but damn if she doesn't have some inner war with herself going on 24/7. it's rough.

SO HEY I’M BACK???? A little ramble, followed by something I want to ask y’all about if you’d be interested in. Sorry for my departure. Life just... really got in the way. I’m still dealing with a lot, and things still aren’t very easy at the moment-- but I desperately needed to do something that gives me a bit of purpose at the moment. Making this comic for others to enjoy was the singlemost eye opening experience for me in a long time, and it also made me realize communication was an entire area of art I was lacking in. Sure, it’s still mostly just messing around and nothing even remotely close to serious, but it’s also a nice testing ground for learning and experimentation with a subject that I don’t have an extremely personal stake in. (Something like working on your own comic, where there’s a looming pressure to always have to make it perfect.) Perfectionism deters experimentation for the sake of staying within the limits of what you know, fear of not meeting your own expectations, all ultimately leading to you never learning new things because you never feel ready to put the pencil to paper in the first place... (I’m on my second attempt at illustrating my own series lmao) Here, I can just mess around without feeling any pressure, and the characters are all familiar to us and don’t require tons of backstory to establish, meaning we can just jump right in to the fun stuff! (And then that, in turn, makes learning and experimenting easier and more approachable!) I realize I still need to learn a lot of basics for comics before I think I’m ready to do my own stuff, and that’s what I really want to do here. So I wanna thank you all for being my guinea pigs (affectionate) in this. Your response to it has meant the world to me, and I really want to get back to that place where I get the warm fuzzies from seeing you all react to whatever weird situation gets drawn from my drawing tablet.

SO ABOUT THE THING I WANTED TO ASK Y’ALL:

I see that Tumblr now has options to allow you to support creators on here, which is actually kinda awesome to see! Would y’all potentially be interested in maybe seeing some extras like sketches, designs, maybe even drawing livestreams, and perhaps some more elaborate art like pinups (I love drawing me some pinups) if I were to have a small subscription option available? (This would never affect the readability of the comic, and no part of AR will ever be behind a subscription.) I’ve been facing an immense amount of financial strain in my life after my whole living situation changed, and things have been pretty rough for my roommates and I. I just can’t morally accept tips unless I can offer you something worthwhile in return, as it’d eat my conscience alive. (I already feel guilty just asking this ngl) Any income made from this would exclusively go to securing rent or food.

Life Update June 2023

Okay, so I don’t typically do these really anymore; but so much stuff has happened recently that I feel like I kinda owe an explanation as to why I haven’t posted stuff I said I was gonna post; etc…

Firstly, I have gained a new hyper-fixation with the Murder Drones series on YouTube, to the point I have just spent an actual lump sum of money on merch; which is something I haven’t done since I was like 12ish… The show is a phenomenal work of art and it deserves more notice. I legit thought I wasn’t gonna like it at all, due to the anime chibi looking characters making me believe it would be garbage knock-off cheap anime bs, but it showed up in my recommends and I haven’t been able to stop watching it since.

I won’t keep gushing about that, as this is an update post, not a review posting lol, but I also have written an entire pmv script for this show and idk I’m in too deep now…

I have also had an infestation of field mice inside my home this month, which my dogs helped to uh… remove from the house. So that’s been a thing.

I’ve also been playing Pokémon Infinite Fusion, and kinda ended up making a too OP fusion of Charizard and Raichu, with a Blaze ability. Who would’ve thought having both immunity to burns and paralysis would work out so well? 10/10 Giovanni didn’t expect me to utterly destroy his legendary triple fusion with that combo lmao.

The Unicorn Warriors Eternal 2nd review will be coming out as soon as I can retrieve some decent footage/images of episodes 5-7. It’s not got as big of a dedicated fandom to it, so it’s harder to track down images of it. :/

I will briefly talk about my opinion of episodes 5 & 6, as I want to clarify that the plot does actually pick up the pace some in these episodes, but it’s still janky with the timing until the last five minutes of episode 6.

I could actually make out some of Tarkovsky’s handiwork in episode 6, but both episodes felt like each scene was created from a different time and art studio. Again, the cgi scenes don’t really blend/mesh well with the 2d drawn art; which I will do my best to breakdown in the actual review.

I did however figure out the main problem I’m having with the show overall. First and foremost; the dialogue. It doesn’t fit Tarkovsky’s usual signature, and feels wildly out of place with the serious plot/nature of events occurring in the show.

I’m not saying that no dialogue is better than a ton of dialogue at all; my point here is that the tone and rhythm of everyone’s speech is not matching the vibe of the scenes/plot/show and is 100% not what anyone from the early 1900’s Britain would sound or behave like. (Also still some weird British stereotypes going on that feel wildly out of left field.)

My second problem is the Popeye art style. This is not me just nitpicking here, again, it is so wildly out of place with the serious nature and tone of the show that it actually interferes with the style/flow of the show. I took a lot of issue with the young children in episode 5; they were drawn with massive muscles on dainty little girls, they looked like a mix between a dwarf and a shrunken Popeye. It was a bizzare image.

Anyways, I don’t have much more time to blab at the moment. I just wanted to stop by and give an update. I’ll eventually get around to more stuff soon. :3

That Lily post you reblogged has me thinking, and it’s honestly kind of insane how categorically bad almost all of the parents on Gossip Girl are, even the ones we’re supposed to like!! If we take all of the various anecdotes from Serena and Eric seriously, then Lily - despite otherwise being an enjoyable character - is nothing short of a negligent parent. And variations of the same can be said for most of the other parents with significant storylines!

Like, as much as the show tries to gloss over it later on, Eleanor’s casual cruelty towards Blair and the seemingly intentional provocation of her bulimia despite KNOWING how severe it was throughout season one was actually genuinely awful. Harold, while more sympathetic given his backstory, still chose to relinquish primary custody of his daughter to move halfway across the world and barely see her, even though she was a 15 year old struggling with a serious mental illness. Alison, despite being oddly beloved in this corner of the fandom, is honestly just as bad - she too fucks off except with the added pretense of it being a temporary separation, and then makes little effort to maintain any contact with her kids outside of holidays, leaving Rufus to effectively single parent. And Rufus, despite being the most involved and least “objectionable” parent on the show, still consistently treats his son significantly better than his daughter, to the degree that said daughter at one point muses that her dad “basically hates her” and seems to believe it.

And that’s without getting into William van der Woodsen, Bart Bass, or the Archibalds, who were actual villains!!! Like it’s no wonder that all of the kids grew into fucked up adults when that was the standard of better parenting on the show.

i originally wrote that i had very little to add but then all of this happened! lmao. but still: you're spot on, anon.

one thing i will say is that wrt alison - she does get quite a bit of leeway in this corner of the fandom, hm? i'm not saying that i hate her or that i think she's as bad, as, say, bart bass (but literally who is), but i think what gets me most about her is that she leaves and upon briefly returning, doesn't let there be any space for the fact that the lives of her children have changed while she's been gone. when jenny tells alison she would have been able to go if she wasn't here, it may come off a little bratty, but it's not hard to sympathize with for me. because she's not wrong! her mom has been gone and now that she's back she's supposed to not have changed at all or stop caring about the things she cares about? (note: i know allison was upset about jenny missing her art show for the debutante ball, but it seems like it speaks to a larger issue of allison not liking who jenny has started to become while she's been gone... even though she's the one that left and jenny's allowed to have interests that deviate from hers.) i think the reason alison gets more grace from some parts of the fandom is that we see way less of her than most of the other parents, so there's room to imagine she's a Perfect Mom (TM) whenever jenny and dan go visit her on the weekends or holidays or when jenny leaves for hudson. but i doubt that's the case. (nor should it be! no one's perfect and i tend to prefer characters who are more complicated than that. but the idea that she's this flawless ideal of a parental figure seems... strange, to me.)

there's something really interesting about the lines being drawn between who the 'good' and 'bad' parents are. because I fully believe that lily and eleanor are on a pretty similar level to the archibalds, yet the narrative turns more in their favor. we still see their bad sides but we get their perspectives more and are Supposed to sympathize with them to some degree. the show never quite shies away from lily's negligence (the way it does from being consistent about eleanor's emotional abuse toward blair tbh), but it also never fully condemns her for it. the narrative wants us to forgive her, i think, in a way that it doesn't really care if we forgive, say anne. there are absolutely parents that are designated firmly in the villain category (#mafia boss burt bass circa season 6), but none of them come out looking to be shining examples of heroes either.

i think the show WANTS rufus to look that way but he just... doesn't. i don't hate him or think he's an absolute monster, but it's incredibly frustrating for him to get put on a pedestal (more by the fandom than the show itself, i'd say, though it depends on the circles you run in). a thought i had when i was trying to wrangle my thoughts in response to this ask jdjsjsjs was that... idk it almost seems like, prior to season one, rufus was used to getting to be The Fun Parent? and part of what alison leaving triggers is him having to figure out how to have a more authoritative role in his children's lives while still showing his care for them. and he gets a lot of that wrong! which makes sense. i think that when you're not used to being the authority and you start to try, you might hold on too tight and be harsher than you mean to be at first. which is what he does! especially with jenny. and that makes sense! i don't have a problem with that in and of itself - it's that it doesn't really get better? he refuses to see jenny's point of view throughout every conflict they have and never really tries to have empathy for her struggling to find her role in the ues (despite insisting, according to the pilot, that the only way both his children will be succesful is going to private school) or for her dreams of being a designer. it's hard not to chalk up his often controlling and judgmental attitude toward jenny as misogny (on his part, maybe, on the writers' part, definitely) because he DOES tend to make more) because he does tend to give dan more grace. but if I'M trying to show any grace, i think part of it likely stems from insecurities and fears from his own musical aspirations - he knows what it cost him and that he's not considered much more than a washed-up musician at this point, that he had to choose between his family and his music and he's chosen them, full stop. he knows dan is passionate about writing, but dan's more cautious, more hesitant, less sure of his craft or how much value he puts on it over everything else. (there are multiple story arcs about this!) i think jenny scares him a lot more because she's burning with pure ambition. she's not hesitant or unsure about it; she knows what she wants and she's going to risk whatever she needs to get it. i think i would be remiss to act like that doesn't play some role in how suffocating their relationship becomes.
