Honestly the first scene In Hannibal that I was left thinking “are they actually about to kiss??” Was in season 2, episode 7 when Will holds Hannibal at gun point. I could not stop imagining will dropping the gun, slamming Hannibal into the wall like he was gonna kill him but just smashing their faces together instead. Raw, angry, messy. Then I think he would just push away and walk out. the rest of the show would carry on like normal and will would ignore it.
Until the cliff scene when they kiss again

I Fucked Your Wife (Will Graham)
Tumblr media
Word Count: over 1800k
Warning:Smut,Cheating
Description: Hannibal is in prison and Will and his wife hook up
Her husband was a cannibal. He ate the people that were found dead and had parts of them in their very home. He gave her and his “friends” the meat of them. She could puke. Just the thought of eating another human being made her nauseous. He was right where he belonged.
But that didn’t make her feel better. She cried and sobbed in the arms of their friend Will Graham. Will didn’t have any emotion to it or at least that he showed. He knew what Hannibal was all along and he warned everyone. He hated Hannibal but not for what he did to all those people. But for what he did to his wife. He hurt her and made her cry. Will wanted him dead for that and only that.
She was beautiful. She always looked her best and even when she didn’t she was beautiful. Will was convinced that Hannibal gaslit her into a relationship. How could a beautiful young woman love a monster like him? He didn’t know.
Her soft cries and sob muffled into his neck. He held her like she was his wife. Like Hannibal would. “It’s okay.” He mumbled to her. She shook her head. It wasn’t okay. It wasn’t even close to okay. He whispered sweet nothings to her. “He killed people Will and fed them to us.” She cried. “He’s a monster. He always was and he doesn’t deserve you.” Will told her. His voice was soft and a whisper. She looked at him. Her eyes were hurting and red from the crying she did. She looked broken.
Will cupped her face and rubbed her cheek. “Will I-“ but she couldn’t talk. She’s in the arms of another man while her husband is behind bars. But she didn’t feel bad. She couldn’t. Not when Hannibal did all those terrible things. “I don’t know if we should.” She said, His fingers ran over her lips. “You’re so beautiful. I’ve always wanted this. You shouldn’t feel bad for anything. Let me make you feel good. Let me help you forget.” He whispered. She didn’t have to think as she kissed him. She softly moved her lips against his. His hand cradled her head as he kissed back. Their kiss wasn’t hard and sloppy. It was passionate and full of lust.
Her hands gripped his shoulders. Their makeout session went on for some time until her hands started unbuttoning his shirt. Her soft hands ran up and down his torso. He loved the feeling of her hands. His hands gripped the bottom of her long shirt. It was Hannibal’s. She removed it and threw it. She honestly wanted to burn it. Their lips connected again. His hands ran up and down her bare back. He pulled off his shirt and threw it with Hannibal’s.
Her hands moved to his pants and unzipped them. “Will, please.” She whimpered against his lips. He grabbed her body and pinned her down beneath him. He removed his pants and straddled her. They both were left in their underwear. He leaned down and kissed her sweet lips again. They kissed until their lips were swollen. His lips found her neck and kissed down from there. His lips and tongue explored her body like a temple.
He kissed her down to her black lace panties. They were soaked and it made him smirk. The thought that she was wet for him and not Hannibal made him feel cocky and great. “Holy shit you’re so wet.” He mumbled. Her hand reached below her to lock in his hair. “Just for you Will.” She moaned. He smirked and pulled them down. Her pussy was perfect. It was shiny with her arousal. He ran a finger up her slit and she gasped at the foreign feeling. She was used to Hannibal and only Hannibal’s fingers.
He kept running his finger up and down her slit. Her cute little moans could be heard through his house. “Will please.” She begged. He smirked. “Please what?” He teased her. He knew what she wanted but he wasn’t going to make it easy. “I want your fingers and tongue.” She gasped as he slowly slid a finger in her while she told him what she wanted. She moaned as he slid the finger in and out of her wet hole. He decided to add another finger and she let out a pornographic moan. He watched her clinch around his fingers and her juices spill out.
He licked his lips and decided to lean in and lick up her slit. She screeched his name. He took that as a sign to continue. His tongue massaged her clit and lips while his fingers fucked her. Her hands pushing his face deeper in her. His lips wrapped around her clit and sucked. His name left her lips like a prayer. His nose was bumping against her clit as he explored her. His mouth was getting wet with her juices and she drenched his fingers. Her breathing started to change into panting. He knew that she was close. Her hands pulled his hair hard making him groan. Her moans kept getting louder and louder. “Will I-” But before she could fall over the edge He pulled away breathing hard
. She looked at him and moaned at the sight. His lips and nose were covered in her slick. He had a smirk on his face that hasn’t left since they started. She pulled him back up to her and kissed him. She moaned as she tasted herself on his tongue and lips. He straddled her and she cupped him through his boxers. He tried to hold back a noise. It came from deep down in his chest. She slid her hand in his boxers as they kept kissing. Her soft hand gripped his dick and got it out of his boxers. Her thumb ran over the tip as pre cum leaked from the tip. He gasped in her mouth. Her hand felt amazing. He couldn’t tell if it was even better because he has always dreamed of this moment or what but nothing has ever felt like this.
She started jerking him off. Her hand running up and down his dick while he let out moans and groans. His head dropped to her neck mumbling his sounds. Her other hand rubbed his back. “Your hand feels so fucking good.” He groans. It was her turn to smirk. She had Will Graham falling apart in her arms. His lips started slowly moving afraid that if he moved too fast he’d cum. Though it wasn’t long until he felt like he’d fall apart. “I’m close baby.” He groaned. She sped up her movements. He wanted to cum inside her. It would feel amazing to claim her as his own while Hannibal couldn’t do a thing about it. “I wanna cum inside of you.” He said. Her movement stopped.
He lifted his head and looked at her. She cupped his face. “Will I want you to make love to me.” She softly said. He looked at her in awe. This is the moment that he waited for. “Are you sure?” He asked her. She was more than sure. She didn’t care about Hannibal in this moment. “Yes.” She whispered against his lips. He kissed her and lined up with her entrance. He grabbed her hand and pinned it above her head while the other one grabbed her hip. They both gasped as he pushed in her. “Will fuck.” She gasped. The feeling of her pussy was incredible. He couldn’t believe he was inside of her about to make her scream. “Will baby please move.” She begged pulling him out of his thoughts.
He started slowly thrusting. Her hand that wasn’t pinned gripped his back. His hips slowly rocked into her. He looked down at her face and she looked blissed out. Her eyes were closed and her mouth was agape. The hand that was gripping her hip moved to cup her face. “You’re so beautiful.” He said to her. His hips picked up their pace as she began moaning. They weren’t too loud but soft and sweet. Each thrust of his hips sent pleasure so good through the both of them. “Will.” She moaned as he started slamming into her. He groaned as she clinched around him. “Fuck do that again.” He groaned. Her pussy clinched around him wildly. He felt himself get close but he wanted her to cum first. He reached down and rubbed her clit making her sob. “Will.” She sobbed as his fingers danced on her clit. “That’s it baby scream my name.” He whispered in her ear. “Will.” She screamed. “Louder baby.” He groaned holding off his climax. “WILL GRAHAM.” She screamed.
Her breathing had picked up and her hand scratched down his back definitely leaving marks. “I’m gonna cum Will.” She managed out. He nodded “Fuck me too baby. Cum for me.” He whispered. Her body shook as she came all over his dick. She screamed his name and he moaned her as they let go together. His hips lost rhythm as they stuttered through the pleasure. His hips didn’t stop moving as they came. His eyes couldn’t leave her face. He couldn’t believe he was watching her fall apart and Hannibal had nothing to do with it. Once they came down he collapsed next to her. Both of them breathing hard still. He pulled her into his chest. “Wow.” He said. She giggled at his reaction.
“Hey I have to visit Hannibal later tomorrow do you wanna go?” He asked her. She yawned and shook her head. “No but please tell him that you fucked me so hard I forgot about him.” She whispered in his ear. Damn if they didn’t have to get to sleep that would have made him fuck her again. He smirked as that’s what he planned to do.
The visit with Hannibal went well. Hannibal looked miserable. Will knew how he felt but didn’t feel bad. Will tried so hard to hide the smile that was trying to show when Hannibal brought up Y/N. Hannibal missed her a lot and had hoped that she forgave him. Will finally smirked at the man. “Will you tell her that I love her and miss her?” Hannibal asked his friend. Will shook his head. “Why not?” Will’s smirk grew as he went up the bars before the guards could pull him away. “Because Hannibal I’m fucking her and she wanted me to tell you that my dick is so good she forgot about you.” He said with pride. He watched as Hannibal’s face dropped. The look of sadness was an understatement. If Hannibal was to ever get out he would kill Will and maybe Y/N for what they did. But Will didn’t care because the look on Hannibal’s face and his wife’s pussy was worth it.
This is my first piece posted here. I will gladly do a Hannibal version if you guys would like. I take request so don't be shy. I will write for tons of fandoms. The list will be in my bio. Also if you notice the name "Alexis" in any of the fics that is my name and I've tried to change them all to Y/N. Thank you so much and I'm open to feedback!

AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!! THIS CHAPTER WAS EVERYTHING AND MORE * inhuman noises * * intensive flailing * 🥹😍😍🤩😍🤩🫠🫠🫠
(sorry for screaming, I have a lot of feels for this chapter). Yunho part was so soft and sweet and perfect!!! (Words can't describe. As someone very insecure I can totally relate to the OC and the way he reassured her was so on point.)
And San (ugh need me a man like him) I felt his worry and concern, and it was nice to see that there was still some level of jealousy between them but they can be rational and above else put the OC well being first.
Thank you for this chapter, you are such an amazing writer ❤️ Just * chef's kiss * . I'm also glad you found joy in writing this chapter. Hope it continues that way 😊
thank you!! it was literally so much fun to write, so i'm glad you enjoyed it!!
it's actually kind of funny because this chapter also made me do a lot of self-reflection on myself as someone who is very insecure and has intimacy issues. at some point, i was sitting there and was like, why won't mc kiss them? why are they so distant? like, i know they have a fear of intimacy, right? so, like what caused it, what is the explanation here, you know?? and then i literally had to sit down and be like, there doesn't have to be an explanation. mc has a fear of intimacy and it doesn't need to be reasoned out, you know? like, i don't have to sit here and spell out completely why mc won't let herself get close. the fact mc is afraid of intimacy is a reason itself. it's a fault and it can be frustrating, but it's reasonable.
ooooo, and san. i was not at all planning on writing any of that. it wasn't until i was about 2k words into this chapter that the idea popped in my head and i knew at that point i couldn't add it in here. it also made me think a lot about how there relationship all worked out and, overall help develop it a bit more. jealousy is inevitable, but i had to remind myself just how close each of them are. they've spent the past eight decades together in a life that practically made them brothers. they've gotten each other through difficult situations and would, without a doubt, lay their lives for each other if it came down to it, so though they wish they had mc all to themselves, they know what exactly the bond to mc feels like and could never deny that to the others. because they care deeply for mc, but also deeply for each other. so, yeah, jealousy is bound to issue, but deep down, they truly only want what's best for mc and even each other.
also, i don't know if you've ever watched the tv show hannibal (literally one of my favorites and i am forever sad it stopped) but the whole time yunho was talking to san about kissing mc, my brain kept thinking about the scene in hannibal when will literally drives an hour one way in the snow just to tell hannibal he kissed alana, and hannibal is just like, why???
but, once again, thank you so much!! your words and kindness mean the world! <33

Pretty as a Picture

Hannibal Lecter x Fem. Reader
Warnings: Implications of smut.
A/N: Why do I keep disappearing from this blog?? I’ve had this idea for FOREVER. Fun fact about me, I sometimes recycle my works from other blogs. So if you’re curious, this is from my Harry Potter blog @seriouslysnape and here’s the original work.
Word Count: 1,738
“It’s not much...just a little something for your birthday.”
__
Tumblr media
On the surface, surprises don’t really seem to come to mind when you think about Hannibal Lecter. The esteemed psychiatrist always came off to you as an open book. He was usually willing to share all aspects of his life with you, which naturally left you believing that there weren’t any secrets lurking further within himself.
Oh, how wrong you were.
Despite all the things that you didn’t know about Hannibal, you knew him well enough to know the sorts of things that he has a fancy for and the things he doesn’t. As high maintenance and temperamental as he is, he is shockingly easy to please. It’s a bit of an ironic statement, but still the truth nonetheless.
You could gift Hannibal with something as simple as a pair of socks or with something as extravagant as a brand new luxury suit, and he’d always have the same genuine, appreciative reaction. If something came from you, he would surely love it with his whole heart.
This gift, however, was on a whole new level.
The idea had honestly come to you at random when you were brainstorming birthday present possibilities. Even though he would never admit it, he was a bit bored of you buying him a new tie for every occasion. He had a tie for every color, pattern, and even he could ever dream of. You wanted to think outside of the box this time. You wanted to come up with something that he would never ever think of.
On the flip side, you also wanted to be sure that it was something that he could have for a long time and something that would have some real meaning to him. You could always go down the culinary appliance route, but he already had absolutely everything he’d ever possibly want or need. You were in a bit of a rut, but that’s when you got a wonderful thought.
Hannibal didn’t own many personal pictures. Most of the photos in his house were custom made art pieces that were worth more than the price of your left leg alone. Hannibal never struck you as the kind of man to have plethoras of pictures of loved ones, but you still found it odd. It’d be a win-win in your eyes. You’d supply Hannibal with some photos to hold on to, and it’d be a thoughtful gift.
Then your plan took a sultry turn.
You had picked out a large photo album that would match the aesthetic of his house, and an album that would have plenty of pages to fill up. You kept it stashed away in your closet until you were ready to put pictures inside of it when another idea came to mind.
What if you made a sexy photo album for him?
At first, you were a little sheepish at the idea. Boudoir style pictures showing off only the dirtiest of contents? It seemed like that might be too much and even a bit weird. The longer you thought about it, though, the more and more the idea sounded good. Maybe Hannibal wouldn’t necessarily jump at the gift, but at least he’d have something to jerk off to when you weren’t around.
You assembled as many outfits as you could, some coming from your personal collection and some were purchased as a specialty to the production of the photos. You’d need some help actually having the photos taken, which is why you recruited one of your closest friends.
You could’ve had them professionally done, but you weren’t sure how comfortable you were with a photographer and group of modeling experts studying over your naked body for an entire day. Your friend was stoked for the project and dedicated a whole afternoon while Hannibal was at work to help you out.
You took probably about a hundred pictures, all with varying poses, outfits, and locations around the house. You even took a few more innocent photos of you just smiling or doing candid things. You figured that you needed some sweet to balance out the spicy.
You decorated the pages to add some pop and flare, ultimately thrilled with the final product. Hannibal’s birthday was only a few days away, and you were itching to show him what you had made for him.
“You’re fidgety tonight.” Hannibal spoke from where he was laid out underneath you on the living room sofa.
It was true, you had been extremely jittery for the last hour and a half, trying to compose yourself. Hannibal had told you that he had wanted nothing more than to have a quiet evening in for his birthday, which you found as a blessing because he’d definitely want to stay around the house after seeing his gift.
“Sorry. Just excited.” You admitted, seeing this as the perfect opportunity.
He raised a brow, looking down at your frame that was practically trembling with explosive animation.
“I feel as if I don’t need to inform you that my birthday comes around every year,” He joked; “What’s gotten you so elated?”
You smiled up at him with a brightness that was almost blinding. You scrambled off of the sofa at your cue.
“Wait right here. I’ll be back.” You announced as you dashed up the stairs.
Hannibal chuckled to himself, already guessing as to what you were plotting. You returned shortly after with the picture book in hand, complete with a bow on top. You sat with your legs crossed in front of him, eagerly handing it to him.
“It’s not much...just a little something for your birthday.” You explained.
Hannibal sat up from where he was settled into the cushions, eyeing over the cover carefully. It was a beautifully crafted book, the dark leather was absolutely gorgeous. He pushed the bow off of the sides, opening to the very first page to see a sweet note you had written him, signed with your signature and all. He turned to the first page to actually contain photos on it, and a smile of pure joy spread on his face.
You had put all of the non-sexual pictures in the first two pages to disguise the actual reason for the book. You were smiling happily in each of the first several photos, wearing different casual outfits and in different places.
“Darling, these are wonderful,” He complimented; “They’re stunning, they-”
His heartbeat quickened when he made it to the third page, and he noticed they had taken on a new theme. The scandalous photos were enough to knock him speechless. For the first time ever, you saw Hannibal’s cheeks break out into a deep blush. His fingertips trailed over one in particular where you were wearing one of his white work shirts with all the buttons undone. The only thing you were wearing underneath was one of his ties settled between your breasts.
In other photos, you were wearing different sets of lingerie. There was one lacy, red colored set that almost made him faint right then and there.
He was knocked speechless, unable to string together a single sentence. You were beginning to feel a little self conscious, and you went back to your original worry that this was a bad idea. You had honestly expected him to completely attack you with feverish kisses or fuck you right then and there. The fact that he was completely silent was unsettling, because Hannibal Lecter always had something to say.
Your voice was thick with uncertainty as you spoke to break the silence.
“Hannibal, do you...like them?” You wondered aloud.
His eyes never steered clear from the book in his hands and the photos presented in front of him. He turned to the next page, a rush of arousal flushing over him at one in particular where you were completely naked, stretched out on the massive kitchen counter and giving a look so seductive that it made his belly flutter. The sight of you naked in his culinary world where he spent so much time was a sight to behold.
“[Y/N], I love them. These photographs...they’re beautiful, well produced, and so, so sexy.” He breathed out.
You exhaled a breath of relief, feeling a sense of anticipation as he continued to rake over them. He turned to a new set of pictures, his hot blush growing even deeper onto his cheeks. He couldn’t look away from the scandalous photos, each one becoming dirtier than the last. He was riled up and he was already looking forward to having this book at his disposal.
His lips parted slightly ajar as he loomed over them. Your waiting was patient as he finished looking through them, his pupils dilating more and more by the minute. He closed the book once he was finished, his eyes finally flickering up to you. He had grown a very prevalent erection, and his eyes were filled with an intense amount of lust. Your suspicions had been correct after all.
He was going to rock your world.
Hannibal usually didn’t try to make the first move. He always wanted you to initiate sex first. He believed that sex was a passionate, romantic connection that shouldn’t always be fueled by burning want and desire from outside resources. Based on the way he was looking at you though, you could tell that he wanted you BADLY.
He nonchalantly rolled his hips forward to create some kind of friction. The sneaky grin on your face was almost maddening. The way that your body leaned in and your lips brushed over his just ever so was intoxicating. Your lips traveled to his ear as you purposefully let out a wanton moan to tantalize him.
“Touch me, Hanni. I know you want to.” You coaxed.
That was all he needed.
Hannibal lunged forward, smothering your body with his and suffocating you with hot kisses. He kept your hands pinned above your head, leaving open mouthed kisses on your neck as he intentionally drew the most wonderful sounds out of you.
“What are the chances of you wearing one of those outfits under this sweater?” He said in a steamy voice.
You squirmed against his hands, but to no avail. When Hannibal didn’t want you to go anywhere, then you wouldn’t. You bit down on your lip in a seductive way, breathing out your response to send him into full on love making mode.
“Why don’t you find out?”

The Bed
Request: “‘There’s only 1 bed” Hannibal & Will obsessed with a fem reader.”
Pairing: Hannibal Lecter x Reader x Will Graham
Warning(s): Smut, Praise Kink, Vaginal Fingering, Vaginal Sex, Slight Dom and Sub Tones, Spitting, Blow Jobs, and So So Soooo Much Fluff
A/N: It’s not as long as I originally intended but I’ll add more later when I find what I want to add. Also not entire proofread. I did read through it a few times but there could possibly still be mistakes and I’ll happily fix them later lol.
Two weeks ago, during a conversation with Hannibal, you mentioned how tired and stressed work had made you as of late. That following week he surprisingly  invited you on a trip to a cabin that he owned. He said it was further north and he usually went there a couple times throughout the year. You didn’t want to interrupt his free time but he insisted you go. He even said that ‘It would be a relaxing trip and the scenery was quite spectacular’.
You mentioned the conversation to Will and he stated that the trip was offered to him as well. But he said that he’d only go if you did as well. The two of you decided to tell Hannibal that both of you would be delighted to go and he happily told you that he planned to leave on the fifteenth.
The rest of the week was spent planning on what you’d pack, meal options, and any necessities that would be needed. When the day arrived you received a text from Will stating he and Hannibal were on their way to pick you up. Despite the cold that nipped at your skin, you decide to wait on your porch.
On the car ride there you ran through your list of items that you all packed twice, just to be sure that you had everything. You knew you had it all but it gave you something to do since you didn’t bring a book and your phone had no service. Hannibal wasn’t much for conversation and Will read a book that you believed was, The Measures Of Madness, which Hannibal had given to him as a gift last Christmas.
When the three of you arrived you all grabbed your luggage and headed into the cabin. Hannibal started making dinner while Will started a fire. You took everyone’s things to the back and went to put them in their rooms until you noticed that there was only one bedroom.
“Uhh… Hannibal? Can I ask you something?” You asked as you walked back towards the kitchen.
Hannibal looked up from the carrots he was cutting and said,”Yes (Y/N)?”
“Where are the other beds? I tried looking and this place only seems to have one room…”
“Oh yes I must have forgotten. I’ve always come here alone so I never thought to have a cabin with multiple rooms that I didn’t need.” Something in his tone of voice hinted that he wasn’t telling the truth but you didn’t bother to question his response.
“Okay, I guess I’ll just sleep on the couch.” You muttered. Not realizing that they had booth heard you.
Will said nothing but came out from the living room and walked to the bedroom.
“Well, (Y/N), the bed seems big enough for the three of us. Why can’t we just share?” Will’s voice yelled out to you. And before you could say anything he added, “Plus the couch seems quite uncomfortable.”
Hannibal sneakily smiled and looked at you waiting for an answer. When nothing came out he said “Yes, it would be a shame if you couldn’t sleep properly while we were on our vacation. You must sleep with us, it seems to be the best option. At least try it for tonight and if you were to become to uncomfortable with it, you can sleep on the couch.”
After continuous bantering amongst the three of you on where you’d sleep, you finally agreed to sleep in the same bed. The two, grown might I add, men both made a small victory dance and you couldn’t help but giggle at their childish behavior. As the three of you ate you conversed about work, how fast the seasons seemed to change, and all recent news. At some point the topic of your love life was brought up. How exactly it came about was unclear to you but it had happened and there was no way out of it.
“So are you...” Will cleared his throat and then continued, “interested in anyone?”
You felt yourself begin to choke on your food at the suddenness of this question. When you managed to calm down your face noticeably heated up making the other two aware of your embarrassment. Neither made any remarks about it and waited patiently for your response.
“Well yes and no, it’s more like I’m interested in… multiple people but I highly doubt they’d care to know. I could never see myself possibly being with them, they’re too good for me. And I could never choose between them.”
Your response seemed to noticeably change something within Hannibal and Will. As you glanced up at them you could notice clear disdain on their faces. You frowned immediately afraid they had become disgusted by you and your lack of choosing between two people.
“Who are they? Is it someone from your work? Or possibly a friend of yours?” Will’s rapid fire questions surprised you. His tone let out that he was not angry at you but at whoever your “crushes” were.
Hannibal reached out under the table and set a hand on your thigh. The grip he had made your stomach flutter and your cheeks felt warmer. He looked you in the eyes and without hesitating said, “You deserve to be cherished by whoever you desire.”
You cleared your throat and opened your mouth to say something but nothing came out. Will stared at you with such an intensity you were afraid he’d burst at any moment. Luckily he didn’t and instead mentioned how late it was getting and that it was about time to ready yourselves for bed.
Hannibal released his grip on your thigh and began to collect his dirtied dishes, Will and yourself followed after him. You insisted that Hannibal was given the first shower since he had made the meal and then it was decided Will would go next and you last.
As you stood within the shower thoughts of what had occurred over dinner began to make their way back into your head. You felt so embarrassed after what had happened. What if they knew of your crushes and were just teasing you? A new thought quickly made itself known and you caught yourself leading into it. It couldn’t really be true; no, there’s no way… but perhaps they liked you back?
You had no more time to think of it because soon the water ran cold and you had to exit the shower. Quickly you got dressed and did your usual nightly routine afterwards you headed to your… shared bedroom, the thought still made your mind blank. It was too embarrassing to think about.
When you entered the room you were surprised to find Will fast asleep. You stared at him fondly then turned your gaze upon Hannibal. As expected he was laying with a book in his hand and a small glass of wine next to him. Before you walked any further it dawned upon you that the only available space was between the two men.
Pretending as if it did not bring butterflies to your stomach, you slowly crawled in to the surprisingly soft bed. Having no other option but to rest yourself in a slightly curled position against Hannibal’s side.
Without any warning you felt Will’s hands curl around your waist and his legs move up against yours. You let out a gasp of surprise at the sudden contact but tried to relax. Hannibal then placed as hand onto of your head and began brushing your hair softly with his fingers. You had no words to describe the unexpected bliss you currently felt at the moment.
Hannibal spoke, his tone soft yet authoritative as he whispered, ”You are to remain and belong to us, only us.”
You felt hot breath against your neck as a shockingly awake Will added on to Hannibal’s words. ”Your silly crushes will have to go away, no one else can have you but us.” He then softly kissed your neck and caressed your side.
Their sudden possessiveness made you blush madly.
Hannibal closed his book then slid himself down slightly so that his face was next to yours. He reached a hand up and placed it on your cheek and caressed your face softly with his thumb. You held your breathe as he leaned in and placed a gentle kiss upon your lips. You couldn’t help but to lean into it and you cupped his face to deepen it as you did. Hannibal took his time to part your lips slightly and move you more towards him.
As Hannibal distracted your upper half, Will began to caress your sides. His hands moved tenderly up and down your thighs and would occasionally dip between them. He let his fingers dance across your clothed area. He only stopped when he reached the edge of your underwear; he would tease you by pulling the fabric up slightly and snaked his hand between your flesh and thin panties.
Your breath paused a moment and a soft hum left your parted lips when Will rubbed his fingers against your folds. Hannibal pressed himself against you and let out a groan as you pulled him closer.
“She’s so needy for us.” Will taunted. The comment made you pout a little and Hannibal lips noticeably lifted in response. “Tell us what you want hun, we’ll give it to you, whatever you want just ask.”
You let out a whine at the though of using your words. It was just too embarrassing to truly tell them your desires but reluctantly you did as told. “I… I want you both inside me…” You hesitated before adding a quiet, “Please.”
“Oh so polite for us. What a good girl.” Hannibal whispered to you, more so to Will though.
You let out a needy whine and pushed your hips both into Will’s hand and Hannibal’s hips.
“Let’s give our good girl what she so desperately wants.”
They both sat up and pulled you along with them. Quickly you undressed with them and then they had you lay your back against Will. His warm skin against yours caused you to sigh at the feeling. You almost became unaware of his length pressed against your back until you felt the tip’s precum wet your back slightly. The reminder had you drifting to thoughts of what it’d feel like to have it finally inside of you.
Admits your distraction Hannibal had begun to crawl closer to the two of you. He brought you back to them by placing his hands onto your now bare thighs; drifting them upwards then spreading them. Once they spread he moved in closer.
Moving up he went past you and made his way to Will. He glanced down at your curious self and then moved to Will’s ear. He then began whispering low enough that you could not hear a single word and before you could even think of something to ask. Hannibal lifted his hands and grabbed a hold of Will’s jaw and roughly laid a kiss onto his lips.
Their tongues were pushed against one another and at some points a tongue would drift into one of their mouths. Will both visibly and physically showed his liking for the kiss by pushing into it and growing harder. He then let out a deep moan that caused his chest to vibrated against your back.
You could feel yourself become even more aroused and the wetness between your legs became more noticeable. You thought about reaching one of your hands down between your legs to pleasure yourself at the sight but found that Hannibal had beat you to it. One hand stayed on Will while the other made its way between your legs. He moved his fingers between your delicate folds, coating his fingers in your slickness. You loudly moaned at the contact and lifted your hips to give him more access.
When Hannibal deemed his fingers wet enough he slipped one within you and began thrusting it in and out before attempting to slowly work you up to two fingers. Your moans increased once he added a second and at that he curled his fingers slightly hitting a spot that had you’re hips pushing down on his hand for more. He then added in a third; at this point you were writhing beneath him, the warmth within your stomach quickly building.
Just when you thought he was going to start bringing you to your climax he stopped and pulled them out. You let out a dissatisfied whine and opened your eyes to look up at him. A muffled chuckle could be heard from above and then Hannibal pull away from Will. He made his way back down to you before, in what could only be described as purring out, “Are you ready for your reward now songbird?”
You looked past Hannibal and up at Will in an almost questioning way. He nodded his head slightly as if he had known what you were asking when you yourself didn’t know. But at his sign of approval you looked back at Hannibal and  quickly nodded your head.
At your sign of consent, Hannibal grabbed ahold of his length and made his way to your entrance. Before he put it in though he coated his head in your wetness and spit down onto your entrance. It was something you hadn’t expected but had you gasping out at the feeling. Once we deemed that he was lubricated enough, he pushed himself in.
Will ran his fingers within your hair and moved you up to kiss him; distracting you from any discomfort. His softness greatly balancing out Hannibal’s rough movements. His tongue lapped up any moan you let out and his fingers caressed your sides in a easing way.
At first his pace was slow until Will moved his hand down between your legs and gathered any of the liquids he could before teasingly circling two of his digits your sensitive clit. You cried out into his mouth and felt your legs jolt at the touch. And Hannibal took this as his queue to pick up his pace.
The heat inside you coiled more and more and you could feel yourself getting close. You started to relax your body more and your breathing slowed as well. You took in deep breathes, well as deep as you could with Will’s mouth on your’s, and felt your self give into the release. Your mouth fell open and you felt your body spasm slightly and your arms bent back and grabbed onto Will’s legs.
Hannibal slowly worked himself in and out after noticing the movements and pulsing inside of you. He moaned out as your squeezed around him and seemed to both push him out and suction him more. The contrast and feeling had him closer than he originally thought and as you came down from your high, his had grown nearer and nearer.
It was at this moment when he pulled out and began stroking himself at your entrance. His hand increase its speed and you watch as one of his hands spread your legs giving him more access. With a final groan he came onto you and ropes of cum leaked down your crevices.
As the two of you laid there breathing heavily you began to wonder what you’d do about Will. He was still hard against you and you could tell that you were to sensitive to go for a round two yet. Then an idea popped into your head that had you smiling coyly and caused you to slowly turn your body so you were now laying on him.
You leaned in and kissed him gently before you started to litter kisses all along his body. As you moved lower you would tenderly nip at his skin each caress of your teeth on his skin had him moaning quietly. Once you reached your desired destination you looked up at him from under your lashes. Eyes observing his every move to see if he was uncomfortable at all with this.
Seeing no signs of discomfort, you licked a long stripe from his base to the tip. Then you swirled your tongue around it, letting your saliva pool around him and drip down his shaft. Will set one of his hands on your head and braided his fingers into your hair. You allowed him to guide you down and you bob your head on him.
You felt movement behind you but didn’t think anything of it until a mouth connected to your now sensitive sex. Hannibal’s seemingly tongue mocked your motions and lapped up any of the mixed liquids he found. You surprisingly felt no discomfort from the delicate touches and even found yourself pushing down onto his face. Though for a moment you hesitated, thinking that’d you’d crush him if any further pressure was applied, but hands wrapped around your hips and pushed your down more.
Your moans sent vibrations through your mouth and onto Will’s cock. Eventually leading to an even louder response from the man above. He praised you when he wasn’t practically crying out. The praises were nothing wild but they were enough to make you feel light headed and adored. Your favorite phrase that he had muttered was most likely, “Holy fuck princess, you look and feel so good with your mouth around me. Just like the good girl you are.”
After a few minutes you noticed that he had begun to move your head faster and his hips began to lift, which you assumed was his attempt to get in deeper. You ended up gagging a few times and found yourself drooling, what felt like,  pools around him. Then suddenly the movements became sloppier and less controlled. At some point you gave up all control to him and instead focused on moving your hips more to get more pleasure out of Hannibal’s mouth.
You felt the familiar warmth inside your stomach coil and twist about and right as that feeling made itself known Will came hard inside your mouth. To your surprise, you ended up swallowing every ounce, not letting a single drop spill. And as you did so, your second orgasm ran through your body. Your muscles shook a little at another rush of euphoria.
Slowly you removed your sore jaw off of Will and pulled your hips up and off of Hannibal’s face. Strings of saliva stuck you two will for mere seconds before they broke and as you glanced up at Will you noticed his dark red face and giggled at the sight. You had never seen him more embarrassed from something then now. It was, somehow, quite adorable.
You couldn’t help but reach up and place your hands on his warm cheeks and pull him in for a tender kiss. Something about the way you kissed him felt so sweet and pure, despite the sinful acts you three had committed. And you couldn’t find it in you to pull away. You stayed with your lips on his for a moment or two and then slowly separated.
After a brief moment of silence and stillness, large hands made their way around you and wrapped themselves around your hands. With a seemingly no hesitation, they guided both you and Will back onto the bed. As you had moved down, you removed your hands from Will’s face and instead placed them around his arms and on his back.
You pulled him closer to Hannibal and yourself and rested your head next to his chest. Your legs tangled with Hannibal’s and one of his hands reached out to set on Will. You had thought a bit about how natural all of this had seemed. It was quite odd that none of you had spoken yet but you said nothing about it.
And as your eyes slowly shut you whispered out a barely audible, “Goodnight.” and fell asleep before you could hear them mutter the same word.

Here, Though the World Explode, These Two Survive by TheTyger (G, 1,194 w., 2 Ch. || Good Omens Crossover || Post-TRF, Ineffable Husbands, Fluff, Reunion, Rings, Hurt/Comfort) – Tomorrow, it would be three years from that day. Three years with no rude text messages, no experiments being conducted while London slept, no body parts in the fridge. And John still sometimes caught himself buying extra milk and looking for cases and making two coffees.
Just the Book by Carenejeans (G, 1,495 w., 1 Ch. || Good Omens Crossover || Humour, Aziraphale’s Bookshop) – John's looking for a book. It's Aziraphale's bookshop, but Crowley provides customer service.
The Case of the Missing.... by Beth H (G, 2,601 w., 1 Ch. || Sherlock Crossover || Case Fic) – Crowley has gone missing, and Aziraphale hasn't a clue how to go about finding him. Luckily, help comes from above...or rather, from the side.
The Curious Case of the Missing Antichrist by Aedemiel (G, 2,865 w., 1 Ch. || Sherlock Crossover || Vignette, Case Fic, Desperation, Bad Ideas) – What if Aziraphale and Crowley had consulted the great consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes, about finding Adam Young?
Eye of the Storm by Calais_Reno (G, 2,996 w., 1 Ch. || The Day After Tomorrow AU || Survival, Cold Weather, Boy Scout John, No Major Character Death) – Weather has become the fifth horseman of the apocalypse.

His heart chooses Captain Watson.
The Old Town by a_different_equation (T, 3,573 w., 1 Ch. || Hans Christian Anderson Fusion || Magical Realism, Christmas, Fairy Tale Elements, Love Stories, Fluff, Friends to Lovers, Museums, Sweet Sherlock) – Once upon a time there were two boys. This is the story how once upon December, they found the missing Christmas Spirit, true love and new beginnings. A Queer fairytale for all seasons.
Holmes vs. Harkness by coinin (T, 3,960 w., 1 Ch. || Torchwood / HHGTTG Fusion || Crack, Mystrade) – In which Captain Jack gets in a little over his head and is introduced to the myriad joys of bureaucracy, Mycroft is smug, the Guide offers up some helpful advice, John Watson doesn't share, and, in a strange turn of events, Jack doesn't get laid even once.
Perfect by TrufflesTheMushroom (T, 3,984 w., 1 Ch. || Good Omens Crossover || The Apocalypse) – Crowley and Aziraphale have made a huge mistake. It's the end of the world and it all boils down to one fight. Crowley has picked John Watson. Aziraphale has picked Sherlock Holmes.

The Baker Street Flat by Anonymous (PG-13, 5,000-20,000 w., 7 Parts || Lake House Crossover || Angst, Romance, LIVEJOURNAL Comments Fic) – John’s pretty sure it’s a sign of mental imbalance — of which he has been all too frequently accused of late — that he is actually entertaining the possibility that he is communicating with a total stranger two years in the future via the magic mail slot on the door of his new flat. He certainly won’t be mentioning this at next week’s session. On his way out the door to interview for a part-time position at a local surgery, another meeting where he has no intention of mentioning his most recent hobby, he drops a fairly sarcastic note: If you’re really from 2012, is the world about to end?

The pages are scrawled with beautiful charcoal lines and thick black ink. The cover, bright red, edges the open pages and something tugs at the back of John’s brain. It’s a familiar feeling, black and tarrish and thick in his thoughts. He shakes it off and picks the book up off his bed, turning so that he can sit on the edge and spread the book out across his knees. If it’s in a word or it’s in a look, you can’t get rid of the Babadook. He turns the page, ignoring the pressure building beneath his chest. Hi! I’m new to the Hannibal fandom and I was wondering if I’m the only one who didn’t understand Alana and Will’s relationship-thing? Like I kind of could see how Alana’s feelings developed but I don’t get Will’s. Sorry if you answered this before I’m just really curious.
Hello! Welcome to the fandom)) This is how I understand the relationship between Will and Alana.
I can see genuine physical attraction, some friendly care, and a crush that's mostly motivated by the fact that Alana is a very acceptable partner - Will craves normality, he wants to be an average family man with a wife and kids as expected by the society. Anything to drown out who he really is.
By the start of S1, he and Alana have never had one-on-one interactions, someone was always in the room with them. Will refers to her pretty impersonally as "Bloom" to Jack in E1. He starts flirting with her when they see each other, but he almost never seeks her out first. He remembers about her only when paths actually cross. There are about 2 exceptions, from what I recall.
1) He calls her first in E8, when he's feeling unstable and worried about it, and asks her to come help him find a possibly wounded animal. At the same time, he doesn't see it as romantic. Everything below is from the script, including text in the brackets.
Alana: You invited me over to help you collect animal parts?
Will: I invited you over on the off chance we find it alive. Hard to wrangle a wounded animal by myself. (then, realizing) Did you think it was a date?
Alana: Honestly, it never crossed my mind.
Will is at first relieved, then almost disappointed.
This is a good demonstration of his feelings. He isn't actually interested in a romantic relationship with her, but he wants to be interested in it.
2) The second time Will seeks her out first is to ask about her safety when Gideon escapes. In the majority of other instances, Alana is the one to come after him.
In E8 again, Alana comes to visit Will at the moment when he's particularly freaked out by his instability. He kisses her with genuine passion - and with desperation, too. That's what he and Hannibal discuss.
In their conversation, Will says he always wanted to kiss Alana because she's "kissable". He doesn't describe her qualities that make him like her, he doesn't say anything about deeper emotions - he merely refers to her in terms of his physical attraction to her. Hannibal rightfully notes:
Hannibal: You waited a long time, which suggests you were kissing her for a reason in addition to wanting to.
Will admits it's true. It's another point proving that his interest is superficial. He never bothered to actually pursue Alana until he got scared because of losing control. They confirm it again in the following lines. Will tells Hannibal how he freaked out because he thought there was an animal in his chimney and adds:
Will: I sleep walk. I get headaches. I’m hearing things. I feel unstable.
Hannibal: That’s why you kissed her. A clutch for balance.
Will nods here. Also, they deleted this bit, but he actually also had to say:
Will: Because I’m losing mine.
So it's a confirmation that Will focused on Alana because he was scared of being even more abnormal than he usually is. He does care about her and he likes her, but their relationship has always been shallow. They don't know each other much. Also, I don't think Will could ever love her for real because of who he is. The thing Will craves most is acceptance and understanding. Alana can't give him that. They have an interesting conversation related to it a bit in E11.
Alana: Would have been fun cozying up with your dogs in front of the space heater.
Will: Don’t need protective custody to cozy up with my dogs. Or me for that matter. Just a little more stability on my part.
So Will acknowledges that for Alana to like him, he has to change. But his instability is largely who he is (not counting encephalitis) - even when he was physically healthy, he was still unstable because of his darkness. That's why Alana didn't feel comfortable staying alone with him until S1. She can't give him unconditional love, and that's what Will needs. Another telling conversation is with Hannibal.
Hannibal: She would feel an obligation to her field of study to observe you. And you would resent her for it.
Will: I know.
It all comes down to them being fundamentally incompatible.
In S2, Will is not profoundly hurt when he realizes Alana has no feelings for him (during the talk with the lawyer she hired), though he’s upset and grim at the realization. He's angry and disgusted upon realizing she's with Hannibal now, but he shows no actual hurt or heartbreak - he's concerned about his relationship with Hannibal already. He shows the same behavior back in S1 - his dreams are filled wth darkness and Hannibal/Wendigo; he shares his most intimate thoughts with Hannibal; he covers up murder for Hannibal and Abigail, while Alana comes to his thoughts only when she's physically there, when he's losing control, or when she's in danger.
So, in my opinion, their bond has always been shallow, and it never went further than superficial friendship and physical attraction. And it fits with Will’s character.
Alana, I think, is attracted to Will and feels sorry for him. I don’t see any genuine romantic feelings from her side either - the worse Will feels, the more she cares about him; when he feels fine and confident, she loses interest and becomes intimidated.

The Story of How Hannigram Became Canon to Those Who Are in Doubt
This post is mostly meant for the casual viewers who I noticed have joined Hannibal Subreddit after the news about the S4 negotiations. It is great that we are growing in numbers, but there seems to be a misunderstanding in regard to Hannigram (the romantic relationship between Will and Hannibal) and people who ship this pairing.
Hannigram is not a fanon pairing. It is not ‘just in the heads’ of silly girls or overly-romantic viewers. It is a canonically acknowledged couple that is supported massively by the cast and Bryan Fuller. Furthermore, this romance is the essence of the show, because Will and Hannibal find everything in each other. No, their relationship is not based merely on romance or sexual attraction. But also no, a more explicit romance in S4, which seems very likely and has been hinted at many times, will not destroy the complexity of the relationship. It will add to it.
The first part is canon evidence of Hannigram season by season. The second part of this huge post is tweets, quotes, and photos with Bryan and cast in regard to Hannigram. (Sorry, I can't seem to break the post in parts for easier reading, the formatting links don't work here for some reason.)
THE SHOW ITSELF
Season 1 is obviously the most ambiguous one in this regard because the relationship only starts to develop. And yes, the majority of scenes can be interpreted as the blossoming friendship, because it is a friendship first and foremost. Even several rather romantic moments can be technically classified as such — but only if you ignore the looks that Will and Hannibal give each other and the later narrative. Still, this is all ambiguous at this stage.
When Hannibal offers Will to take care of Abigail, he repeatedly calls them her “fathers”. Not “uncles” or “caretakers” or any other option — fathers, and while this word by itself might not mean much, it is clearly supposed to hint at what kind of relationship is going to unite Will and Hannibal in the future. In 1.07, Will doesn’t come to the appointment and Hannibal is pining. It is a very powerful and explicit scene, with Hannibal slowly walking to his chair, checking his calendar to make sure Will had to come, touching the phone longingly, then abruptly making a decision and going to look for him. All of this is accompanied by the corresponding music. Is this scene romantic? Some may see it this way, some may disagree. But I think most will agree that such obvious pining is a common romantic trope that's often shown in media. The focus and the way the scene is presented are everything: they didn't just show that Will didn't come and that Hannibal decided to find him. No, we had a slow focus on all his hesitant actions and his longing for contact. In any way, at this stage, it is no longer a mere friendship. It goes deeper, to the point where Hannibal can’t stand not knowing where Will is and craving contact enough to drive for hours in the search for him.
Once again in 1.07, Will brings Hannibal a bottle of wine out of blue and acts awkwardly and shyly when declining the invitation to join the dinner party. We don’t know why Will did it and it is never addressed again, but I think everyone will agree that bringing a bottle of wine to another person for no reason and just for him has a rather romantic shade.
Then, in that same scene, Will claims he can’t stay because he has ‘a date with a Chesapeake Ripper’. It is a joke, of course, but once again, it’s fiction. The word choice is very deliberate, and Bryan loves to foreshadow the upcoming events.
In 1.08, Will drives an hour in the snow to tell Hannibal about the kiss with Alana and Hannibal exhibits a very controlled jealousy, making a snarky comment about the long drive and telling Will that he had been motivated not by attraction, but by the need to find a balance.
In 1.09, Hannibal calls him and Will Abigail’s fathers again and touches his shoulder. Yes, it is ambiguous, but when (especially) you know what’s coming, you can’t help but notice how this touch is too hesitant and fragile for a mere gesture of friendship and unity. I’ll just say, even my father caught up on it right away, which is saying something.
These are the most explicit things I recall from season 1. Now, season 2 is way more direct.
Many scenes of Hannibal pining, sitting with a glass of wine and staring at Will’s chair at his time of appointments is a common romantic trope. Yes, it can be interpreted in different ways — for example, Will has already become a part of Hannibal and Hannibal misses him as the person who has the power to understand him. However, I feel like I have to emphasize the fact that it cannot be the only reason. Hannibal has already met people with extreme empathy before, such as Pazzi. He has also met people who were happy to join him and who had similar mindset, as Tobias Budge. Hannibal wasn’t interested in them, but he’s interested in Will. Will is special because he is himself, and like Hannibal will say later, love either pays you a visit or it does not. It clearly did with Will.
Soon after Will is released from prison, he goes to Hannibal to start the implementation of his and Jack’s plan. What does he choose to do? He dresses up and polishes himself up, presenting himself to Hannibal in the way that we have never seen him before. The first thought that comes to mind is ‘seduction’. Consciously or unconsciously, Will makes himself look as attractive as possible.
In 2.08, Hannibal touches Will’s face and holds it, staring into his eyes. This is romantic. It is one of the most popular romantic tropes that ever existed. ‘Transcendent’ love doesn’t require this kind of very intimate touch to be displayed. More than that, things become very dangerous here because if there had been no explicit follow-up, Bryan would have been accused of queerbaiting. Fortunately, it wasn’t the case.
In 2.09, Will has a dream where Hannibal directly calls him his ‘beloved’ several times. In 2.10, Hannibal treats Will’s hands very gently and we get camera focusing on it thoroughly. It is a deliberate depiction of eroticism that's often used in romances to create and underline romantic and/or sexual tension. In the same episode, we have a beautiful sex scene, seemingly between Hannibal and Alana and Will and Margot. However, it is there to show a very intimate and all-encompassing connection that is developing between Will and Hannibal, and it is structured this way specifically. Will reaches orgasm when he sees the Wendigo, a reflection of Hannibal. The words used before, like Hannibal's words about "never touching", are said to Alana but put on the image of Will.
Alana notices the shift in this relationship and asks Will and Hannibal about it. They talk about “crossing boundaries” and the fact that they “know where we are with each other”, and Alana clearly remains suspicious. In the end of the episode, Will and Hannibal have an intimate dinner full of lingering glances.
In 2.11, the episode starts with the eating of ortolans, which has being pointed out as an allusion to blowjob by the creator) If you have missed it, just re-watch this scene again with this in mind. It is very explicit, to the point of being uncomfortable. Hannibal’s reaction to learning that Margot is pregnant from Will is to hint Mason about it, thus endangering her and her child. Granted, he seems to genuinely regret it, but the deed is done. It is a jealous and possessive reaction, which has been further confirmed by Mads. During the con, he said: "If Margot had Will’s baby, it would be very hard for Hannibal to get over it. He’d be jealous and very grumpy." In this same episode, Alana looks at the burnt ‘Shiva’ that Hannibal has left for Will and calls it a ‘courtship’. So, we get the explicit confirmation that Hannibal is courting Will. And no, he isn’t courting an emerging killer in Will because at this point, he thinks that Will has already embraced his potential by killing Randall and Freddie and eating her. To Hannibal’s mind, Will is almost ready, but he is too lovesick to stop. Can you imagine him digging up the corpse of ‘Freddie’, decorating it, and displaying like that? It’s hilariously romantic — in a dark way.
In 2.12, Will chooses Hannibal by freeing him from the trap and then not giving him up to Jack after he mutilates Mason. Hannibal draws a fanart (!) of himself and Will as Achilles and Patroclus. For those who don’t know, these two are popular examples of lovers. This isn't just friendship. The reference to Achilles and Patroclus is often used to hint at a romance, it's a popular trope as well.
In 2.13, Hannibal talks about ‘imago’, an image of a loved one, and then says that he and Will have an image of each other and offers him to run away. Two men running away together to reunite with their daughter is romantic. Will chooses Hannibal once again by calling him, but it is too late. We get a heartbreakingly tender and intimate touch between them before the stabbing. As Mads said, "Will is the light of Hannibal's life and Hannibal killed Abigail to break Will's heart the way he broke his." Just as he said that "Hannibal was blinded by love."
Season 3 is where all subtext is taken into text. Hannibal has chosen Bedelia as a substitute to Will, and note how many people believe they become lovers. So, why Will and Hannibal running away is platonic, but Hannibal doing the same with Bedelia is not? Even though when the only person he does love is Will. We see that he is dissatisfied with Bedelia and is growing restless.
In 3.01, we get a flashback to Gideon who teases/mocks Hannibal by saying, ‘If only that company could be Will Graham’. So, in the very limited interactions, even he managed to glimpse the attraction, because let’s be honest, he didn’t have time to understand all deep layers of this relationship, but his phrase has been included deliberately.
In this episode, Hannibal meets Anthony, practically a Will mirror. He looks similarly, is smart, sassy, and he is even enthusiastic about Hannibal’s crimes. Ideally, he is everything Hannibal has wanted. But what does he do? He kills Anthony and turns him into a Valentine heart for Will. Before that, he makes an example of the heart from Da Vinci’s ‘perfect man’. In 3.02, Will recognizes it as such and calls it a Valentine and a ‘broken heart’. He asks himself, “Do I still want to go with him?”, and answers, “Yes”.
In 3.03, we get the first ‘in love’ confirmation. Hannibal is shaken after seeing Will and hearing his words of forgiveness. When talking about him with Bedelia, Bedelia says, “Betrayal and forgiveness are best seen as something akin to falling in love”, and Hannibal replies, “You can’t control with respect to whom you fall in love”. The longing for Will has made Hannibal reckless, and Bedelia notices it by mentioning that he is going to get caught with this kind of behavior. In the end of the episode, Hannibal once again says that Will makes him feel love. He adds, “Love. He pays you a visit or he doesn’t.” Which love can either come to a person or not? Technically, these words could be interpreted as platonic love, but in the beginning of this very episode, we got a confirmation that the nature of this love is romantic. Will, in turn, is still reverent about Hannibal and even travels to his home to find out more about him. His attitude changes when he sees Chiyoh, who he sees as another toy abandoned by Hannibal, and it brings back the insecurities. We see it through how often Will compares himself and Chiyoh and how he is filled with anger and bitterness again (which were absent before this meeting). Chiyoh sees right through him and repeatedly states that Will is wrong to compare them, but Will persists.
In 3.04, we see that Will spends a lot of time sitting in Hannibal’s house, which is yet another romantic trope. Even Alana knows where to find him. Will admits to Jack that he “wanted to run away with Hannibal”, which also has a romantic connotation. Before that, Will was making the boat that he later uses to come and find Hannibal. This scene is intercut with his Mizumono memories, namely, with Hannibal's face that emerges every time he moves yet another part of the engine. This is a vivid demonstration of Will trying to repair what is now broken. He also literally sails after Hannibal, which is considered extremely romantic by many tropes at once. Chilton calls Will and Hannibal’s interactions a “flirtation” in this episode.
In 3.05, when discussing what to do with Hannibal, Chiyoh says, “I told you, there are means of influence other than violence” and kisses Will, thus showing him what others means exist. It is yet another direct allusion to the romantic part of Will and Hannibal’s relationship because Chiyoh basically offers him to kiss Hannibal instead of trying to kill him.
In 3.06, Hannibal says the famous, ”If I saw you every day, forever, Will, I would remember this time”. He said the same words to Clarice in the books shortly before having sex with her. It is an utterly romantic phrase that just cannot have any other meaning, especially when you count the narrative and the source material. Will adds some more romantic phrases, like “We are conjoined, I wonder if either of us can survive separation.” Such level of love is incredible, but you don’t say things like that to a person who you feel can just understand you. Nor to a simple friend or a spiritual mentor. It’s everything at once, especially when coming from Will. Things go badly after that and we get a knife and a drill. Scenes in Mason’s house are great and show that Will and Hannibal could be a great team. Hannibal saves Will and carries him home bridal-style. He changes his clothes, puts him into bed, and waits for him to wake up while writing down formulas that could change the time and erase some of the events. When Will wakes up, Hannibal admits that he has discovered Will in his Mind Palace, victorious, thus giving the power into his hands. When Will rejects him (by saying he’s not going to miss him), Hannibal gives himself up, knowing that chances are, he will never get back to freedom and he will never see Will again. Prison is the ultimate act of love because Hannibal is helpless there, completely on Will’s mercy. As Mads said during the con, "Will forgetting him was the last thing Hannibal wanted to hear, so that’s why he surrendered. The only way Will would see him again is if he’s in jail, and he would eventually visit. He was afraid he’d never see Will again otherwise."
3 years pass and we see that Will has a family. But — surprise! He is unhappy. He doesn’t even go fishing with them to have some time for himself. He hides the letter from Hannibal and goes to read it in the middle of the night. He never returns Molly’s ‘I love you’, never attempts to touch her, can’t even keep up a conversation with her, and literally sees himself falling to pieces. At the earliest opportunity, he jumps at the chance to see Hannibal. He didn’t have to do it. We are shown that he has recreated the crime scene perfectly, better than ever before, but Will lies to Jack about it and asks to see Hannibal.
In 3.09, we have a very powerful scene of Hannibal and Will reuniting, exchanging long sorrowful and heartbroken gazes. Hannibal says, “I gave you a child”, which puts him and Will in a category of parents again. He says that Will has chosen a ready-made family and Will doesn’t argue. We get a “Murder Husbands” reference from Freddie.
In 3.10, Will seeks Bedelia out. He acts catty and jealous. Bedelia calls him “Hannibal’s bride”, and calls Will out on visiting Hannibal just because he missed him, which Will doesn’t deny. He is confident and snarky at those scenes, using every opportunity to cut into Bedelia for having a relationship with Hannibal and surviving it in even better shape than he did. Bedelia says, “My relationship with Hannibal is not as passionate as yours”, and then adds: “You are here visiting old flame. Is your wife aware of how intimately you and Hannibal know each other?” They literally place Hannibal on the same level as Will’s wife. Then we have, “Your experience of Hannibal’s attention is so profoundly harmful yet so irresistible, it undermines your ability to think rationally.”
In 3.11, Hannibal sends Francis after Molly and Walter. Will doesn’t really comfort them, we see clearer than ever what a wedge exists between them. Hannibal asks, “How is the wife?”, which is another display of blatant jealousy. Will gets it, and he can’t deny the truth any longer.
In 3.12, we have the exchange that should have settled the debates about romantic part of relationship once and for all. Bedelia compares herself and Will to Hannibal/Bluebeard’s wives, and mentions how she would have preferred to be the last — the one that Will is. Will asks, “Is Hannibal in love with me?”, and Bedelia replies, “Could he daily feel a stab of hunger for you, and find nourishment at the very sight of you? Yes. But do you ache for him?” Will’s look and his silence speak volumes as everything fades to black slowly. This is it, the textually explicit confirmation. Fans didn’t come up with the idea that Will and Hannibal are in love, it was stated directly on screen, several times.
Shortly before the confession, Bedelia says, "It excites him, knowing that you marked in this particular way." Personally, I always felt some sexual subtext in this phrase, and it is confirmed when we regard the similar scene in the book. Clarice gets sperm on her face and these same words sound. Granted, the situations are very different, but it proves that the phrase does indeed have sexual connotations, and it was deliberately planned like this.
Will devises a complicated and deadly plan after this. He sets up Chilton, which can be seen as courting gift to Hannibal, and in 3.13, he lies to everyone to break Hannibal out of prison. Bedelia calls him out on it once again, saying, "Can't live with him. Can't live without him." Will doesn't deny it - he confirms it. When Hannibal says he'll agree to the plan if Will says 'please', Will does it - in an obviously flirting way. Hannibal calls him a 'cunning boy', which is once again obvious flirting, especially considering the way he says it. His plan results in the deaths of numerous officers, but Hannibal is free. We have another romantic trope where Hannibal pretends that Will is a hitchhiker and asks if he’s going his way. In the house, they have another loaded conversation where Will admits that he doesn’t think he can save itself, and that it’s fine.
Predictably, Will can’t handle seeing Hannibal killed, so he reaches for his gun. We know the rest. At the cliff, Will finally accepts the truth, and he gives the fate a chance to stop both of them or to set them free. They fall into the ocean under the Love Crime song, and since the water symbolizes reborn, we can guess what happens after that.
Post-credits scene indicates that Will and Hannibal have paid a visit to Bedelia and are in the process of eating her while she’s hiding the fork to stab one of them as he approaches. The deleted epilogue to the series shows that they are in perfect harmony now.")

Initially, during S1, Bryan said he wanted to explore the idea of “heterosexual male friendship”. However, he later admitted that he was worried about negative homosexual stereotypes surrounding the imbalance in power in the relationship between Will and Hannibal, and in the podcast due to the beginning of American Gods, he confessed that he “wanted to approach “Hannibal” from the angle that no one has explored before — the angle of romance”.
During the airing of S2-S3, and beyond, Bryan was the one who pointed out romantic and even sexual subtext, and promoted Hannigram further. The cliff scene is officially labeled as "Kiss_alts".

Mere teasing, but it shows that Bryan does acknowledge sexual tension between Will and Hannibal: They did change clothes as well as Their lips were busy (to the question of what Will and Hannibal were doing in the car in TWOTL).

To the question of whether explicit Hannigram was a part of the initial plan, Bryan Fuller stated: "No, it naturally evolved because I guess I was absorbing so much of Mads and Hugh's performance, which felt like it was growing in intimacy, and it would have been inauthentic not to address it. Because all of these characters, and particularly Bedelia, was able to call out what she had witnessed [between Hannibal and Will], it seemed like a natural conclusion. I remember when I turned in the rewrite pages where Will asks Bedelia if Hannibal is in love with him, I got a note from Don Mancini, one of our writers who was always pushing for more homosexual text – not just context or subtext but text, text, text – and he was like, "I'm so glad you put that in there! They said it! They said it!" http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/hannibal/interviews/a667077/hannibal-bryan-fuller-talks-season-4-sexual-fluidity-and-how-will-became-clarice-starling/
Discussing what motivated him to verbally acknowledge the romance between Will and Hannibal, Fuller mentioned: "It felt like we had to s–t or get off the pot, ultimately, because there had been so much going on between these two men that when Will asks, "Is Hannibal Lecter in love with me?" it is very much about death and the romance between these two men. There is a quality to connections that go above and beyond sexuality. You can have this intimate connection with somebody that then causes you to wonder where the lines of your own sexuality are. And we didn't quite broach the sexuality. It was certainly suggested, but the love is absolutely on the table." http://tvline.com/2015/08/29/hannibal-series-finale-will-lecter-cliff-bryan-fuller-interview-season-4/
Remembering how the song for the finale of the series was created, Fuller said: "It was interesting. She [Siouxsie Sioux] was like, "I want to write this song, and what are the things I should really be thinking about?" And I was like, "this is a love story. A love story between a full-fledged psychopath and someone who has nascent psychopathic abilities." Actually, Hannibal Lecter is not a psychopath; he's something else entirely. But it's a love relationship between two men: one of them is a cannibal, and one of them understands those cannibalistic instincts all too well." http://uproxx.com/sepinwall/hannibal-creator-i-wanted-to-be-sure-we-had-an-ending-for-the-story/
Bryan Fuller: "Clarice never, until the end of Hannibal, submitted to that romance, whereas Will seemed to be on a slippery slope right from the beginning, so there's a contrast to be drawn between them." http://www.digitalspy.com/tv/hannibal/interviews/a667077/hannibal-bryan-fuller-talks-season-4-sexual-fluidity-and-how-will-became-clarice-starling/
Bryan in the commentary: "“After killing Francis Dolarhyde with Hannibal Lecter, he realizes this is exactly what Hannibal Lecter has wanted all along. He has wanted a partner in crime - a murder husband, as it were - and the sad truth of it all is that Hannibal was right. Will did enjoy it. Will thought it was a beautiful, powerful thing." https://omnisexualhanniballecter.tumblr.com/post/134099645797/after-killing-francis-dolarhyde-with-hannibal
Hugh during PaleyFest 2014 (prior to S3): "They are in love or they love each other, that's unquestionable. I think it's a platonic love... but it's rich in... (audience and cast laughs) Ok, we've done two seasons so far... so platonic love and they recognize each other as unique in the world, they reflect each other in a way, it's like profound recognition and relief that comes with it. And they are good looking guys." Mads agrees: "Exactly. Losing him or what Hannibal did with him in the two seasons is probably the closest he has ever been to loving anyone. And what love means in his universe we have to see later on. But it's heartbreaking everything that happens to poor Will is also heartbreaking for Hannibal."
Hugh: You could say that during the second half [of season three]-I mean, obviously we’re jumping ahead here, but Will comes back to Hannibal. He’s now got this family, and Will, independently and pretty quickly, starts coming to the conclusion that it’s not sustainable for him to have that family. Like, he’s not the guy. He’s not the right person to be able to look after them, to live with them. It’s not compatible with who he really is. And you could argue that Hannibal is just driving him more quickly to come to that realization. So in that sense, it is kind of brutal, tough love. His love is saying, “Know thyself.” Mads: As Hugh is saying, it’s unavoidable. It’s going to happen sooner or later. Might as well happen sooner, before he’s stuck. [Interview http://oh-dr-lecter.tumblr.com/post/129331180920/theyll-say-were-in-love-fangoria-august-2015]
Mads Mikkelsen on ‘Which scene has been the defining moment?'
"Probably one of the moments early on, maybe mid first season, where I spend some quality time in therapy session with Hugh and he’s flying away thinking about something and I have the chance, Hannibal has the chance, to watch him. And he becomes very warm watching him. He sees not only this brilliant person but he sees something he loves. I think that is the definition of Hannibal." [https://twitter.com/noforts/status/1071952333221888000]
Bryan and Hugh discussing Will's motivation in TWOTL at the cliff and beyond (in the commentary to S3):
Hugh: The point was that it wasn't the horror that drove Will to do this, the horror was secondary, it was a horror in reaction to how much he loved what happened between him and Hannibal. We have seen so many moments of Will is covered in blood and shaking and horrified and this moment he suddenly realizes it is his true self.
Bryan: I remember the day you shot the closeups, you both came running to me and I remember Mads was particularly giddy, giddy as a schoolgirl, he said we really went for it, we really went for the love story, we almost kissed and it's all there and you can use it.
Hugh: We had to push in that direction so that there is no point pretending otherwise.
About Bedelia's leg:
Bryan: The false interpretation is she cut her leg which is a crazier version of Bedelia than I understand. Of course the intention is they survived and there are three place settings."
Hugh, answering the question what is happening to Will and Hannibal now: "Let's just say they're on a beach somewhere. [Interviewer] Just chilling on a beach? [Dancy] Yeah, just chilling on a beach. Drinking something out of a coconut."
Also, the reports from people who visited one of the cons mentioned the following."Today at Red Dragon Con it was announced by Mads that Hannibal and Will are now married, have dogs which he calls “the ugly carpets” of the relationship, and live in seclusion for 4 years before hunting together." Regardless of whether it is going to come to fruition or not, this is how Mads imagines Will and Hannibal's life Post Fall.
Mads in May 2018:
"“I think that Hannibal and Will… they’re not really alive without each other. They are a piece of the puzzle for the other one’s soul.”
A great video where Mads talks about Hannibal and his feelings in S2 final.
Question: Was Hannibal suspicious of Will before he smelled Freddie Lounds or was he completely clueless about it at that point?
Mads: Hannibal doesn't have a masterplan. He's living from day to day and he's seeing possibilities and opportunities, and one of them is Will Graham, who he is obviously in love with, in a certain way - that way. But I think at that time, Hannibal has been blinded by Will Graham. He believes truly that he will walk down the path with the light, hand in hand, with Will - and Abigail. That's his dream, that's what he wants, and I think it does surprise him and it does break his heart. It is a turning point for Hannibal when he becomes the cleaning man instead of the man who loves. Until then, he'd been a man full of love, and after that, I think he is... slightly angry. It was a surprise for him. He was tricked. He got blinded by love.
Interesting interview bit:
IGN: Reba’s final scene was another where you got to really pull direct quotes from the book. But here, I was reading it as Will can also be projecting about himself, as he talks about what it might be like to have a serial killer in love with you. Was that in your mind too, given you had these great quotes from the book but that it could definitely be maybe be a bit more of an echo here, given the situation.?
Fuller: Oh, absolutely. It was a great synchronicity of events where everything that Will was saying to Reba in the novel actually applies to Will Graham in the television series. So there was the want of seeing that scene because I haven’t seen it in any of the adaptations where we get to see Reba, post all of this, and have a quiet moment between the two people who were in love with serial killers.
Bryan: "My ship is canon" (https://twitter.com/BryanFuller/status/1072599788581998593)
Bryan about Will and Hannibal's relationship: "Will accepts who Hannibal is. It’s also narcissistic, in the way that we fall in love with people who make us feel better about ourselves and who make us feel like we’re a better version of ourselves. That makes us feel more secure in our bodies, in the dysmorphia of who you are on the inside versus who you project on the outside. That disconnect narrows dramatically when somebody sees you, understands you, accepts you and loves you. It’s transcendent." (http://collider.com/bryan-fuller-hannibal-silence-of-the-lambs-interview/)
Bryan about Will's reasons for jumping, surviving, and attacking Bedelia with Hannibal: "I think one of the reasons it seemed so organic for Will to go over the cliff with Hannibal at the end was that, in his mind, as he understood the universe in his world, he had peaked. It’s also stopping a monster and stopping himself from becoming a monster, but I think part of him was thinking, “That was beautiful. I don’t think I can do that again and feel as high as I do now.” Everything overwhelmed him and he went over that cliff because there was an apex to his experience, in a way that was poetic and dramatic. ... The kind of suicide where somebody jumps off a bridge, part of them hopes they survive and part of them wants to be over. I think a lot of people are hoping for some percentage of survival that may change them because they’re looking for change within themselves. So, I think there was some bit of that. For the ending with Gillian [Anderson], there are two place settings for a reason." (http://collider.com/bryan-fuller-hannibal-silence-of-the-lambs-interview/)
Bryan about Will and Hannibal's relationship in S1: The relationship between Will and Hannibal in this first season is the seduction. It is Hannibal Lecter recognizing in Will Graham for the first time in anyone that he has ever encountered in his life the opportunity for a friendship, a real friendship, because he sees something in Will Graham that he also sees in himself. They are both unique in their crazy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzU7O7Q0R5U)
Hugh about the start of Will and Hannibal's relationship: "It’s an instant love between them, it is as if Will met not the best chess player in the world, but the only absolute, the only person he can play with, that enters in the room - or rather, in his life - with a chessboard in hand, and this provokes in him a pleasure and an incredible relief. When we find Will at the beginning of the second season, he was betrayed and thrown in jail, so he is not in a really enviable situation, but the connection he had with Hannibal has remained unchanged, it is something which he can not get rid of. This time, however, he manipulates their connection because Hannibal still needs him and their friendship, but beyond the practical utility must be said that the bond with Hannibal is, even for Will, a source of uncontrolled, involuntary pleasure.”
Mads about the start of relationship: "Hannibal sees an opportunity in this young man. And so he can hopefully, one day, walk hand in hand down the road of life." https://k-s-morgan.tumblr.com/post/187266698258/hannibal-sees-an-opportunity-in-this-young-man
Mads during S1: "When he sees Will, he recognizes himself to a degree. [Hannibal] has empathy, but [he] uses it as a tool; Will has empathy, but he doesn’t know what to do with it. Lecter sees an opportunity to open this man’s eyes and see his full potential realized. And he also sees the opportunity for a friend, which is probably not what he’s had too many of. Even though Hannibal is the puppeteer, he really loves Will." https://screencrush.com/hannibal-lunch-preview/?utm_source=tsmclip&utm_medium=referral
Bryan: "The tricky thing with this show is that it is a story about two men and their relationship. But if it were just about male point of views, it wouldn’t be interesting. I feel like we haven’t done as good of a job, in Season 2, of representing the female characters and their point of view of the world. I think there’s a greater opportunity in Season 3 to do that, and do more of that. In Season 2, we knew the story was about these two guys, and everybody else around them were pawns. Jack Crawford was a pawn. Alana Bloom was a pawn. It was all about what was between Hannibal and Will Graham." https://collider.com/hannibal-season-3-details-filming-europe/
Bryan about S4: I'm still hoping for more Murder Husband adventures!

Will.... crazy, desperately jealous of Bedelia But acting like he doesn't care™ ThankU
author’s note: yes yes yes and yes! love this prompt, anon. love me a bit of jealous hannigram, if I do admit it myself! thanks for the prompt, hope you enjoy :)
-”why her?”
-his question is cold, his tone stony and face much the same. he does it on purpose. he wants Hannibal to connect the dots, even if he doesn’t want to actually talk about it. he’s feeling especially sour, even though now none of it really matters now, since they’re running from the past he despises so much.
-”why who?” Hannibal asks, drying cutlery, his back turned on Will. even though he can’t see him, Will straightens his shoulders, taking on a more confident stance.
-”Bedelia,” he clarifies, “you chose her. when you ran away, you ran away with her. why her?”
-there’s a moment of total silence, in which Hannibal stops moving, stops putting away the newly dry items, and Will might think he’s died standing up, if it weren’t for his sudden response.
-”you sound jealous,” he notes, making Will feel suddenly hot, like it’s his fault, like he’s the one in the hot seat. he refuses to let Hannibal get the upper hand, so he clears his throat and retorts.
-”I don’t get jealous,” he tells the doctor, voice still keeping cool, despite his mental meltdown, “I get even.”
-”you almost sound intimidating, Will,” Hannibal says fondly, then turns to face Will, a dry cloth in his hands, wiping away the water residing there. upon his face blooms a sincerely wicked smile. “you’re rather unpredictable lately.”
-”I should think so,” Will responds, then moves so he leans against the sink, standing beside Hannibal, who he feels watches every movement he makes. “you could have told me, you know. you didn’t have to leave without me, without Abigail. with Bedelia.”
-that last part he adds on with a venomous streak in his voice, spitting the name like a faithful disciple might do Judas’. it’s hardly a conscious decision he makes, anyway.
-”she wasn’t such a bad companion,” Hannibal teases him, eyes watching him intently, seemingly waiting for a reaction, enjoying how Will’s jaw clenches at him complimenting the woman, “I couldn’t have told you. you were undecided; it was too risky.”
-”I’d have chosen you,” Will blurts out, almost too fast, “if you’d have told me the plan, if I’d have known- it’d have been you, not Jack or Alana, or anybody else.”
-Hannibal offers him no words, not of comfort nor adoration nor appreciation. he looks at him, but the heat in his gaze softens, mulling merely as warmth and familiar affection. Will holds his eye, refusing to let him go - never again, because he doesn’t know who he’ll end up with this time.
-the doctor is slow, purposeful, in everything he does. every word he speaks, every move he makes, everything he does have intention pushing it, willing it forwards, influencing himself and those around him. this is why Will knows that when Hannibal chooses to discard the fabric cloth behind him, so that he has to reach right around him, as opposed to placing it elsewhere, it’s not a happy accident.
-his breath catches in his throat, but fear can’t take this away from him. anything else, sure, but not this, this that he’s waited so long for. this which he’s been anticipating virtually since day one.
-when Hannibal’s eyes drop from his eyes to his lips, that’s when he feels the rush. he manages to contain it, just about, but there’s some animalistic part of him that’s ignited by the sight of Hannibal wanting him that makes him want to jump the man, to ravage him then and there, as dinner cooks.
-he doesn’t, though. he’s trained, and so his patience carries him into the moment slowly. he allows himself to be Hannibal’s prey, watches as the man draws nearer, as though slowed by some terrible force of physics. he inhales quickly, licks his lips, and then it happens.
-Hannibal’s kiss is light. that is, at least, the first one, though he imagines - hopes? - that any future ones they’ll share will be varied. it’s not that he doesn’t like it, however. he likes it, very much so, and he’s pretty much quaking with how much he wants Hannibal in that moment.
-his fingers find their way into Hannibal’s cropped hair, running through it, relishing in the feel of the man’s soft locks beneath them. he feels exactly as Will had expected him to feel - perfect, pristine, divine - but nothing like it at all. Will could have never accurately imagined how it would feel to have Hannibal pressed up against him like this, to have him gently coaxing him in with his taste.
-their chests press up together as one or both of them begins to teeter forward. he thinks it’s probably him, because he can’t remember exactly where he is, but figures it doesn’t really matter anyway.  his fingers grip Hannibal’s hair more tightly, and he can’t ever dream of missing how it feels when Hannibal’s hands come to rest at his waist, clutching him tightly, as though as afraid of losing Will as Will is of losing him.
-they only part when Hannibal pulls back. Will’s shocked, sure, and definitely a little disappointed. his small, self-doubting voice slips into the back of his mind, and tells him this is either all a dream, or it’s a living nightmare and Hannibal regrets every single thing that just happened. his throat closes in on itself, but he waits for Hannibal to speak before he assumes anything.
-”dinner,” he says plainly, then reluctantly lets Will go, slipping away to check the oven. Will had almost entirely forgot about their food in the jealous - yes, the green-eyed monster had possessed him - haze, but now that he can see it and, as Hannibal removes it and draws nearer, smell it, he’s sure it’s sublime.
-the pair of them sit, and begin eating. the meat is set in the middle of the table, between the two of them, and though the distance between them makes Will’s heart ache, there’s something sweetly satisfying about it, and all of its twisted irony.
-there, in a well-cooked, beautifully prepared dish, sits Bedelia’s leg. he can’t remember if it’s the first or second, but he discards the importance of this. regardless of whether it’s right or left, wrong or right, the sight and smell brings a smile to his face.
-he can safely say now that, regardless of whatever they’ve been through and whatever happened or didn’t happen between Hannibal and Bedelia, it’s a fair point to make that she won’t be interrupting the two of them them and their flourishing again any time soon.

Paradise Lost, III
Klaroline AU | Crossover, Modern!AU, Frankenstein!AU
[Part 1] [Part 2] [AO3]
A/N. lmao it’s been 2 years, omg. I am so, so damn tired of this chapter - it has been lying on my drafts for years, literally, and every so often I went to add something, delete something else, and I was just. tired. of seeing it there with no apparent will to go somewhere, anywhere. What even is this story?? It doesn’t even have a plot. It’s just an AU for which I have some ideas, each one worse than the other, so idk if there will be an end. Or a point? Lol. Just - enjoy creature!klaus and dr. frankenstein!caroline and don’t expect too much. Let’s call it a personal experiment and practice for English writing.
This of course doesn’t mean I don’t love every single one of you who for some reason love this story??? Guys, really, each ask gave me life and made me cry because - yeah I suck, I can’t meet the promises I carelessly make, I’m so so sorry! But yeah, I hope this will make me look less, idk, bad?? I hope you enjoy despite everything. Also, since this is probably the only thing I will post until next year (also the only thing I’ve posted this year I guess??), merry Christmas and happy holidays and happy new years and hugs and kisses and confetti for everyone! ♥♥♥
warning: mentions of suicide and depression. no beta, i’m posting this now because, again, if i don’t it will just die in my drafts, so. i will read it tomorrow or in the next few days after I purged my eyes for a bit and i will be able to take a carefully objective look at it. feel free to point out any mistakes anyway!
PARADISE LOST – Part III
Abashed the Devil stood,
And felt how awful goodness is, and saw
Virtue in her shape how lovely.
—saw, and pined his loss.
[John Milton, Paradise Lost (846, 848)]
A year and ten months earlier.
Niklaus Mikaelson knew perfectly well that this time around, there would be no saving him. Strangely enough, the rapid nearing of his death did not worry him in the slightest.
After all, it wasn’t as if he had anything left to live for.
His family had been decimated – his brothers, his sisters, his parents, all dead in some way or another during the last fifteen years. And he was even more or less responsible of most of their deaths – that was probably the only reason why he hadn’t tried to escape the prison. His own kin’s blood that stained his hands. He was tired of fighting, tired of running, and he was sick of living with the ugly regret those deaths brought along.
Besides, cowardice was beneath him: he did no fear death.
Honestly, those nine months in the death row had been far worse than whatever would came next. For a man who had enjoyed life at its fullest, who had fancied his fair share of women and men, who had admired the most exquisite art, even producing some of his own – the devastating absence of any kind of beauty in the prison was probably a fate worse than death.
Moreover, the food was uneatable.
He hadn’t even wanted a lawyer, what would have been the point? So, they had appointed him one – an attorney who surely wasn’t paid enough and who trembled and swallowed anxiously every time he found himself sitting in front of him, as if he were Hannibal fucking Lecter.
Ludicrous. He had killed people, not eaten them. He wasn’t barbaric.
Wiser men than himself said that when one approaches one’s own death, images of the life he had conducted would flash in front of his eyes, like a morbid recap of all his good and bad and awful deeds that would determine his fate on the other side. As per his own personal experience, Klaus couldn’t really think of anything. He’d rather his last moments weren’t focused on his past, on things that he couldn’t change and for which it was too late to ask for even a modicum of forgiveness. Those who could grant it were dead too, anyway.
He let the guards move him from his secluded cell to the room where he would die soon, his eyes apathetic as they counted how many steps he had to walk. They had handcuffed him with his hands behind his back because they didn’t trust him – fools, each one of them; if he had a single spark of fight left he could have freed himself even with hands and feet chained, as it were, but the truth was – he hadn’t. He still remembered the time when he had bit off the jugular of a police officer just because he had liked to mock him, and – but no, he had decided he wouldn’t think of the past. He buried those memories in the back of his mind and kept counting the steps and the floor tiles.
They pushed him inside a somber room with grey walls that looked halfway between a doctor’s office and an interrogation room, seeing as it had both a hospital cot and a two-way mirror right in front of it. He ignored it – he didn’t want to think of how many reporters and police officers were sitting on the other side getting ready to enjoy his departure from this world. He simply let them guide him to the bed, allowing them to uncuff him so that he could sit and lie on it and then watching dispassionately as they cuffed his wrists to the banks of the bed.
Once settled, he decided to let his gaze wander around.
He counted ten people: the two guards who had held onto him as they brought him there, three who kept their weapons aimed at him from the corners of the room – bit of an overkill, he thought with a barely repressed smirk – his lawyer, the district attorney, a nurse and two doctors.
It was there that Klaus’ attention settled eventually: surprisingly, one of the doctors who had come to monitor his execution was a young and lovely blonde lady.
Finally – something good to focus on in his last moments on this blasted earth.
She didn’t look as if she particularly cared to be there – but he was a good judge of character, and so he knew better. Her skin was pale, but in an unhealthy way: the red of her eyes and the dark shadows under them suggested that she had had little sleep lately, a fact she was trying to hide behind glasses. She had little to no make-up, her hair styled in a bun ordinate enough to look professional.
He casually wondered what she would have looked like with her hair loose over her shoulders, without her glasses, perhaps with a smile on those delicious looking lips – must have been the drugs.
He didn’t listen as the DA read him his charges – he knew perfectly well why he was being executed. He didn’t need to be reminded of all his awful deeds – or, well, of those that the police were aware of.
Instead, he kept staring at that stunning blonde – damned him if he would leave this world without taking with him a delightful vision to look at on the other side, if there even was one.
Funnily enough, she was staring right back at him.
He would have liked to know her name, he realized while the nurse was fixing the needle in the crook of his elbow. The drip with whatever poison would have had the honor to kill him was ready, and Klaus was determined not to look at it. It wasn’t that difficult, with that woman’s attention utterly focalized on him.
He saw her gasp when they opened the tube to let the poison into his system, her teeth biting softly her bottom lip as her eyes darted around, as if someone would jump forward at any moment to stop the execution. I’m sorry, sweetheart, he thought, his mind already drowning in the mist of drugs. There’s going to be no salvation for me.
Her blue, wide eyes were the last thing he saw before being lulled towards the empty darkness.
.
Present day.
Caroline awoke slowly wrapped up in a comforting warmth, something that hadn’t happened in a very long time. A soft light poked timidly through her window’s curtains, making her groan and hide her face into the pillow.
She had the weirdest dream last night – she dreamt that Niklaus had returned to her. Perhaps it was just wishful thinking on her part – her subconscious revealing her desire for forgiveness, the gaping abyss of regrets she lived with – but she had almost made peace with him, had comforted him, held him. She had stopped wondering a long time ago why she dreamt of him instead of Tyler – clearly her shame exceeded the nostalgia she felt towards her late fiancé.
As she sluggishly came to her senses, though, she started to gather more details. A body pressed firmly against her back; an arm curled around her waist, its hand covering her stomach and preventing her escape. Slight puffs of air ticked her nape – someone’s breath – and occasionally a nose nuzzled her neck.
Caroline froze, confused. She didn’t remember having Stefan stay the night…
Because Stefan had the night shift at the hospital.
Suddenly, everything came together at once.
Trying to stifle the loud gasp she felt coming, Caroline stiffened, all the while looking for a way to get up without waking the person – Niklaus – still sleeping behind her.
When she had agreed in letting him sleep with her, last night, she hadn’t expected to wake up with him wrapped up around her like a second blanket. It was also strangely comforting, if she had to be honest; and in a brief lapse of clarity, she realized that she had not slept that well in more than a year.
His hand splayed over her belly was cold even through her top; one of his leg lied trapped between her warmest ones, and his face was buried in the sweet hollow of her shoulder. She had never known him to be a cuddler – not that they had ever slept together, voluntarily at least. She remembered, in fact, there were times when she had awoken just to find him next to her, usually well alert, rarely asleep, like a guardian dog of sort. Nightmares often kept him awake, at that time. Caroline wasn’t usually afraid of him – maybe in the beginning, but then she had quickly learned that Niklaus looked at her with that same unconditional trust and love that children nurture towards their mothers, and thus he would have never hurt her. Not purposefully, anyway.
Although now, the situation was quite different. She had betrayed him – abandoning him – and thus she doubted that his feelings towards her were still that pure. She tried not to think nor give a lot of importance to the kiss he had forced on her – she was sure there was a good, logical explanation.
Swiftly, and carefully as to not brusquely awake her guest, Caroline slipped from the bed and padded towards the kitchen, remembering to snatch her phone from the nightstand and setting off the alarm: no reason to wake Niklaus – Klaus, she mentally amended – earlier than was necessary.
Checking quickly her phone for texts, she found the usual Good morning from Stefan: he had just finished his shift at the hospital and was returning home hopefully to sleep the morning away, thus giving her plenty of time to think of some excuse to cancel their lunch date. With Klaus back in her life, and with no way to know where they were standing, she felt horribly guilty about seeing Stefan as if nothing were wrong. But she didn’t want to lie to him, so she decided to text him back later: in the meantime, she hoped she’d be able to gain a little more insight on the whole situation.
Klaus did seem to be in a talking mood just a few hours earlier, hopefully that hadn’t changed with a night of sleep.
Her hands started automatically to fix breakfast. Her stomach was currently too tightly wound to let her eat anything heavy, so she would have to give up on her eggs. As she prepared some coffee, finding a sort of peaceful comfort in the familiar gestures, Caroline went silently over all the questions she would have liked to ask him.
It was probably best to start from the beginning, and slowly work their way down to the present. She was indeed curious about the life he had lead away from her – one year mightn’t seem a lot, but for a newly reborn man, who had had only a moderate knowledge of the world and the way it worked, it ought to be a damn long adventure.
And what about companionship? Did he keep himself away from humanity, or had he tried to form links, have relationships, make friends? She noticed he had a way with words, now – he didn’t stutter, as he had done in the beginning, instead his tongue slithered fluently with every syllable, curling almost seductively around the most insignificant of letters. Again – did he have some tutor, or was he self-taught? Caroline found herself most intrigued, and despite everything she couldn’t wait to question him.
But all of this simply served as a delay for the actual problem. For she certainly hadn’t forgotten the ardent speech from last night – what he had pledged and threatened, what he had promised.
He wanted her – he said she was his.
Her first instinct was to scoff and dismiss him, it was that ridiculous. This was the twenty-first century, no one belonged to anyone anymore, what was this kind of caveman philosophy? Certainly not something he had learned from her.
And yet… A part of her, no matter how hard she tried to ignore and fight it, was somewhat thrilled. Well, she couldn’t belittle their relationship, by any means: they were linked, and deeply so – she had brought him back from the dead, for heaven’s sake – but was there something more? Perhaps his feelings were simply caused by the fact that she had nursed him back to health, that she had cared for him when he was in his most vulnerable state.
Perhaps it was only gratitude on his part, a gratitude he was misunderstanding because, with his memories missing and his innocent mind, he did not have any other basis for comparison?
Narrowing her eyes, she started stirring the coffee to cool it down a little. How in the hell was she supposed to deal with that situation…?
“You’ll ruin the cup that way,” came suddenly the quiet voice of her guest.
Caroline startled and raised her head, not very surprised that he had managed to come upon her undetected, and she offered a tentative smile. “Would you like some?” She asked, gesturing towards the coffee.
He nodded, and went to sit down in front of her while she fixed him a cup. Klaus murmured a thank you, cupping it with both hands and reveling in its heat, and wisely waited for her to speak again.
The silence stretched for a while longer, however neither of them found it too uncomfortable. With the morning light entering from the window, Caroline could examine Klaus for the first time after a long year.
His hair had grown. The last time she had seen him, he had a short, curly mop that she had loved to comb with her fingers, feeling the tiny scars underneath. Now, his hair was longer and darker, his curls less cherub-like: they looked softer and ruffled, but they didn’t give him the appearance of someone who neglects his look. To be honest, he looked like the first time she had seen him – in prison, about to face the death penalty with a sort of dignified resignation – maybe that’s what the aura of danger was about.
She swallowed the last of her coffee, then put the cup down with a soft click. Klaus seemed to sense that she wasn’t unable to start talking anytime soon – she had so many questions, she didn’t know where to start – so he was the one to finally break the silence.
“Why did you send me away, Caroline?” His voice, for the first time since last night, held no accusation. Just plain curiosity. “Were you so scared of me that abandonment was really the only option?”
She inhaled brusquely, her eyes snapping to his and her lips mouthing mutely some kind of answer. There went her carefully constructed questionnaire. “What…? No, Klaus, afraid of you? I was afraid of me, actually.”
She watched him frowning, his eyes darting all around her face as if there he could find further explanations; his coffee entirely forgotten, he rested his hands on the smooth surface of the table, in a gesture that Caroline knew meant he was deeply in thought. She knew what he was thinking, or at the very least she could guess where his pondering was taking him. He probably thought she was afraid because of the life he led before: she didn’t exactly know how much he remembered about it, or if he recalled anything at all, but it wasn’t hard to imagine that Klaus had berated himself over it after she sent him away. After all, she didn’t have any other reasons to fear him – except for last night, he had never even talked to her with spite or rage.
“What do you mean, you were afraid of yourself? You’d never hurt me, Caroline – and besides”, here he rolled his eyes, a familiar gesture that he ought to have taken from her, “I’ve always been stronger than you, physically. You knew that, you built me that way.”
Caroline frowned, pressing her lips together; she didn’t like thinking of it as her ‘building’ him – it felt even worse, more unethical. She looked away from him, focusing on something over his shoulder.
“I wasn’t… in the right state of mind when I did what I did to you, Klaus. I even went to therapy, after.” It felt so strange to finally admit that out loud, when no one knew except for her and her doctor. “I wasn’t feeling well, and that whole process… it destroyed me, emotionally, you know? I-I even tried to… well. It doesn’t matter now, I suppose. I hated what happened, and I was depressed, and alone, and… honestly, it’s only luck if I’m still here to tell you this.”
Her voice got progressively hoarser as she spoke. Images of the misery she’s been through in the last year – when she was alone, with no Tyler nor Klaus at her side whom she could seek comfort from – flashed in her mind like scenes from someone else’s life, leaving behind a dull feeling of helplessness and regret.
She felt Klaus’ golden eyes burning holes on her skin, but she refused to raise her head and look at him – she wouldn’t be able to keep talking, otherwise.
“I let you go because, in some tiny window of clarity, I realized all of that. I could have hurt you, or worse, and even if I deeply regretted my work, I… I didn’t want you to suffer. You didn’t ask to be brought back, you had no faults in that… Plus, you were still unused to a lot of things; some concepts came to you slower than others. I doubt you fully understood what was going on most of the time, why were you like that, why were you with me? It just felt like the right thing to do, giving you a chance to start over, to move on, away from me.”
The more she talked, the more she felt a weight lifting off her shoulders, as if the last year was spent in waiting of something like this to happen – as if apologizing and explaining herself to Klaus were the only things that mattered, that could save her from a hell of self-hate and desperation.
“I felt responsible for you. You looked up at me with such awe, such trust in your eyes, that I couldn’t… there were times where my feelings got the best of me, and I couldn’t even get up from the bed, let alone take care of you. Do you remember?” She wasn’t waiting for his answer, so he kept silent. “The first time it happened, you were so scared and worried that you couldn’t even speak clearly. You cried, and moaned, and tried your best to make me react, but of course it wasn’t that easy. I think it was the first time I lashed out at you.”
Caroline sniffed, rubbing the palm of her hands over her eyes, trying to conceal her tears. It was harder than she had thought taking it all out like this, laying the whole of her soul bare for the man in front of her to see, scrutinize, judge. Yet she didn’t stop.
“God, you should have seen your face. You just looked so… so betrayed, Klaus”, she swallowed, her voice dying a little. “You were trying to take care of me the only way you knew how, and instead of being nice I went mad.”
Oh, Klaus remembered perfectly well what she was referring to: it had happened a few months after his rebirth, when he still struggled to do things on his own, when he still couldn’t talk, when he didn’t even know her name. It wasn’t something he liked to dwell on – especially since he had so many other moments he could choose from, when he came to think of how he and Caroline had spent that first year – but now, in hindsight, he could do it with more clarity and a deeper understanding of events.
That didn’t mean, though, that knowing her reasons made forgiving her any easier.
He did think, at one point when the memories of his past life were starting to flow back to him, that Caroline had discovered some ugly truths about the person he had been before, and that that was what forced her to push him away, to get rid of him. It didn’t justify her, but it did explain her actions.
Of course, that hypothesis got discarded as soon as he remembered that she had been there, during his execution – she had known from the very beginning who he was, and who she was bringing back to life. If the fact that he had been a murderer wasn’t a problem before, surely it couldn’t be the reason why she had decided to let him go. Somehow, that was even harder to suffer.
But now, as he watched her as she forced her eyes to stay dry, as he listened to her voice tremble, as he smelled the sweet scent that always surrounded her like a cloud – he couldn’t, for the life of him, find that loathing that had kept him going for so long.
“Caroline…” He started, undecided. What could he possibly say to her confession? “I- You could have talked to me. You could have told me anything, and I would’ve understood, and… I could have helped you, Caroline.”
The honest pain in his tight voice made breathing harder. “It wasn’t your burden to bear”, she said.
Klaus shook his head, straightening up and pressing his back against the backrest of the chair. “I don’t understand”, he eventually snapped. “Did you think my mind was too simple to grasp the fact that you were suffering, and that your misery was somehow linked to me? Maybe I took my time to reacquaint myself to the world and its mysteries, but you! You, I’ve always known, since the moment I opened my eyes for the second time! If you recall, in those first weeks, I didn’t sleep much; I used to stay awake all night, jumping at the tiniest rumor, uncomfortable in my own skin. And so I heard when the nightmares woke you up, or when they kept you muttering and whimpering, when you spent the night turning and fussing in your bed. I knew you were in pain, I just didn’t know the exact motive, and it tortured me! You always pacified me the next morning, appeasing me with a strained smile, but that didn’t change the fact that I worried for you. Dammit, Caroline!”
He pushed violently the chair back, standing up and starting to pace around the little kitchen. He ignored her gasp at his reaction, passing a hand through his hair with an impatient gesture.
“Do you have any idea how much I worried? I may not have been that eloquent at the beginning, but even then, you should have known what I felt for you; I do like to think my affections were quite straightforward. And then one day, out of the blue, you drove us to the beach only for leaving me on the roadside later with only a bag and no explanation! After a whole day spent together, right when I was beginning to think that maybe you were starting to heal! You left me. Like an old dog you were suddenly tired of. I can’t… You left me alone in a world that was extraneous to me, a world where I didn’t belong anymore, and where the only person I had come to trust and care for had just betrayed me. You killed me a second time, Caroline.”
Caroline was crying silently, now, her shoulders trembling and one hand pressed against her mouth to muffle her sobs. Every word was a knife to her heart, a nail to her coffin – but she felt she deserved it. She wasn’t thinking clearly when she took the decision to let Klaus go – in her mind, she was convinced that it was the right thing to do, giving him a chance to a new start, a blank state, away from her and what she might represent. Of course, it wasn’t completely selfless of her – as she already told him, it was more for her benefit than his that she had left him. She was becoming ill, for heaven’s sake, it had nothing to do with Klaus personally!
God, sometimes it still felt like a dream. As if all that had happened right after Tyler’s death was but a fragment of her tired imagination, something she had dreamt in between shifts at the hospital, that would have disappeared into thin air as soon as she had opened her eyes and the sunrise had eaten away her nightly visions. A hallucination, maybe, caused by her grief.
However, once her eyes opened again, shedding the oddments of her dreams, the heavy burden of reality – of what she had done to Klaus, the horror and the ungodliness of her project – fell on her, leaving her breathless and almost crying on the floor.
Those weren’t the times she loved to remember when she her mind went back to Klaus, in the long year they spent apart. There were fun moments in between all the pain and the remorse, before everything became too much – times that she thought fondly of, with bittersweet nostalgia. Like when she had taught him to read, and he used to listen with rapt attention to her voice as his eyes followed the text; or when he watched her as she cooked, or of the few times, at the very beginning, when he barged inside the bathroom where she was taking a long bubbly bath because he didn’t find her anywhere in the apartment and was starting to get worried.
She cared so much about him, she could even admit in the privacy of her head that she loved him too, somehow – I’m yours, he had said, vowed, only the night before, when he had kissed her with an unrestrained passion that still made her shiver – and finding out how he had reacted at her giving him his freedom… as if she had purposefully done it to hurt him, as if she could possibly be able to… It was heartbreaking.
“I’m sorry”, she whispered after a long silence, wiping the tears with her hands. Her voice was but a shadow, a whisper of air. “I’m so sorry, Klaus.”
He didn’t answer immediately. She felt him watching – always watching, his eyes scorching upon her skin as if he could devour her simply by looking at her, as if he simply couldn’t bear to look anywhere else when he had her to stare – his ragged breath a loud sound in the empty kitchen. She didn’t fear him, no matter who or what he had been in his previous life: he was different now, she hoped, and her reactions from the last night were simply a product of her surprise, and the shock of suddenly finding someone in the darkness of her own home.
Suddenly he moved, and she hated herself for flinching.
Moving slowly as if she were a wild animal not to scare, Klaus bypassed the table and went near her. He kneeled besides her chair, his eyes never leaving her face, then he reached for her hands, carefully holding between his own.
She took a deep breath, then raised her eyes to meet his. She almost started to cry anew when she saw that there was no hate in the dark, inhuman gold of his own – only wariness and a deep fatigue, made easier to bear by the gentleness she found in his expression.
“Klaus…” She started again, her voice broken.
But he only shook his head, gentle yet firm. “The only reason why I accepted to hear you out, Caroline, was because you took care of me when I was helpless, and weak, and dependent on you. You brought me back to life in more ways than one, you taught me how to be human again, and your kindness will forever endear you to my eyes.” He raised a hand so very slowly to cup her face, softening when she didn’t recoil but pressed instead her cheek against his callous palm. “But you did abandon me, Maker, and that it’s not something I can just simply forgive.”
She closed her eyes, feeling as if he had stricken her, trying uselessly to prevent any more tears from coming. “Don’t call me Maker, please”, she whispered.
His thumb started drawing slow circles upon her cheek. “Isn’t that what you are?”
“I…” She snapped her lips shut, because she didn’t actually have an answer to that. What would she even say? That she thought they were friends, at the very least? Partners? Companions?
Could she even dare to think along those lines, after what was nothing less than a betrayal?
But that word – Maker – was dreadfully cold and cruel, it erased everything that had been between them, undermining their story, and most of all – it made her feel sick for what it represented.
“It puts me in a position of superiority that I most certainly don’t deserve, nor do I want”, she said eventually, lowering her teary eyes upon his carefully guarded expression. “Please, Klaus… Say something”, she whispered, raising a hand to cup his own, still solid against her cheek.
Klaus’s eyes flickered briefly on her hand, but he didn’t move – to her secret delight. He took a deep breath, then he fixed her with a grave stare.
“I am so angry with you, Caroline.” He admitted, roughly. “If you could look inside my soul, now, you’d be scared at the depth of my rage. And yet”, he continued, rising a bit more towards her, his voice going impossibly soft, his caress on her face gentle despite his words. “I find that I still love you so profoundly that I can almost feel it in my marrow, and it overshadows that anger. Even when I hated you, even when I planned thousand ways to get my revenge, I’ve never stopped loving you. Maybe that is what made me truly vicious, what ruined me.”
“Klaus–”
“Don’t leave me ever again, Caroline”, he interrupted her, shaking his head. “I couldn’t bear it a second time.” His lips barely touched the soft line of her jaw as he spoke, yet she closed her eyes, shivering. “I wouldn’t forgive you, a second time.”
Caroline couldn’t find in herself the will to avert his touch – his cold skin felt pleasant, his stubby cheek gently stroking her own a surprising comfort. She sighed, her eyes half-closed and tired, and she discreetly inhaled his scent relaxing in its familiarity.
Klaus kept talking, a soothing murmur barely audible over the pounding of her heart. “I know that you’re in love with that other man. I’m not asking you to love me like that, to love me like I do… I did not come here to force your hand. I only ask that you allow me to stay, here, besides you. I would be content with that.”
Caroline was so shocked by that declaration – by the certainty with which he had spoken, as if he knew her feelings better than herself – that she didn’t manage to reply on time, telling him – reassuring him? – that she didn’t exactly love Stefan. God, love was such a misused word. Why would she tell him that, though? Why would she want to? After everything?
She was too emotionally drained to deal with that now, so she pushed it in a corner of her brain and decided to leave if for another day.
“Why”, she asked, confused. “What do I have to offer you, that you can’t easily find anywhere else? You spent the last year travelling, and yet here is where you’d like to end up?”
Klaus’ eyes seemed to warm. “Precisely because of that, because I’ve seen the world and I came to realize that this, here, is where I belong. Where I long to be. By your side. Caroline”, he exhaled, grabbing her hands and holding them tight. “I wasn’t even meant to live this second life. And because you gave it to me, you gave me this second chance… Caroline, my life is yours. I’m yours. Don’t–” His voice broke a little, “don’t send me away.”
Caroline was so dazed by the drastic turn her morning had taken that she couldn’t even manage to feel panic at Klaus’ plea and pledge, and she didn’t know if that counted as a good or a bad thing. She thought he was angry, that he wanted to take revenge; she would be an adult and admit it, she hadn’t been fair with him. She had let her fear and depression take charge and had acted without taking into consideration the consequences, least of all what the abandonment would have felt like for Klaus – a newly reborn man that was just beginning to live again, and that could potentially risk imprisonment for crimes he didn’t even remember. She couldn’t bear to think of how that would have gone down – she had so badly miscalculated, and she could only thank Klaus for deciding to finally pay her a visit before things went worse.
Besides – she hated the idea of him despising her so much more than the one of having back in her life.
Eventually, with her voice hoarse and trembling, she gave him the answer he wanted. And inwardly said goodbye to the quiet, normal life she had briefly considered to have with Stefan.
“I won’t, Klaus. I promise.” She closed her eyes as her creature released a relieved sigh, his hands bringing her own to his lips to cover them with tiny, grateful kisses.
Later, as they sat in front of a fresher, warmer cup of coffee – their knees touching under the table, their shoulders pressing against each other in comfort – Klaus hummed as if he had just now remembered something, and nudged her gently to catch her attention.
With an interrogative sound, Caroline turned to him.
“There is another thing I meant to discuss with you”, he said, suddenly seeming uncertain.
What more could there possibly be? “Yes?”
“I remember you.”
Caroline blinked, perplexed, then – a light sparkled to life in her mind, shocking her into silence. She could only gape at him as she realized what he was referring to, except it couldn’t have been possible – not after the invasive surgery his body had gone through, not to mention the simple fact that he had died. He shouldn’t be able to remember anything from his previous life – he couldn’t. Science didn’t work that way.
Yet, Klaus seemed perfectly confident in what he was telling her, his thumb brushing gently her knee in a soothing manner. “I found out why I’ve always felt so at ease with you after all, why that sense of familiarity – it came to me in bit and pieces, and then I simply knew. You were there, Caroline. When I died… you were one of the doctors. I remember you.”
Caroline stared at him with wide eyes, speechless.

Could I turn the ‘ask me about a fic snippet’ on its head? Because I would love to know what YOUR favourite snippet is from Quicksilver. I adore that fic series more than words can express, and going right back to the first one I would be fascinated to know how it came about, how it evolved and what your favourite part is.
:DDD thank you and what a great ask! I had to think about this realllllly hard. My favourite parts usually feature Will and Bev hanging out (they’re just so fun together and a pleasure to write) or the parts which are, for me, pure Quicksilver - namely, Hannibal being dangerously thirsty, pulled entirely out of his comfort zone, while Will remains just a tiny bit out of reach. Or, shall we say, not quite as much in reach as Hannibal would like.
My favourite so far is the ficlet where Hannibal meets Kyle, Will’s ex-fuck buddy. I think my writing has improved so much since I started began it so it’s hard for me to like the earlier stuff that much but, having said that, I still really like their first meeting in Hannibal’s office too :)
I’d pick this little section because it sums up everything about their relationship in the series so far, and I finally managed to articulate why I called the first fic Quicksilver:
The Bentley - there was only one, of course - was parked at the edge of the lot. Hannibal was behind the wheel, conspicuously not on the phone and listening to opera instead. Possibly Wagner. Will couldn’t be certain but it was bombastic enough.
“Dealt with your patient emergency, then?” Will opened the door and put his bag and book on the back seat. “Must be nice being a doctor - you’ve always got a ready-made excuse to leave.”
“I simply wanted to avoid any awkwardness and let you say your goodbyes.”
Will climbed in beside Hannibal and fastened his seatbelt. “Hannibal,” he said. “Are you jealous?”
“Not jealous, no,” Hannibal replied. “But I do find myself feeling extraordinarily possessive. It’s not a flattering thing to admit to.”
“There’s not much for you to feel possessive about,” Will said. “We had a thing, it was fun. That was all. I hadn’t seen him for ages and he didn’t know about you and then, when he did… Well, he was pleased for me, I think.” Will shrugged. “He’s a nice guy under the jock stuff.”
“I have no doubt of it,” Hannibal said. “You wouldn’t suffer anything less.”
“The night I met him I threatened to punch him,” said Will.
Hannibal turned his head sharply, a flash of angry concern escaping from under his calm veneer. Will was torn between a laugh and climbing into his lap for the hot reassurance of kisses. He settled for pulling Hannibal’s hand into his own, and pressing it to his cheek. Hannibal sighed, and stroked the hair back from Will’s face.
“You are like quicksilver,” he said. “At times it’s hard to see how I can hold on to you. It may not always bring out the best in me.”
Poor Hanners, sulking in his car, drowning his ~feelings~ in Wagner :D
Not to go all mushy but the development of Quicksilver kind of mirrors the development of my friendship with @theseavoices (who you know I now have a very very very good IRL friendship with) so it’s been quite a meaningful experience for me. We’d chatted a little bit and one day I made an throwaway comment about how I was wearing “fem! Will! clothes that day (basically a plaid shirt dress with sensible outerwear). She quizzed me about that for a while, then she said, I’m going to paint him! My response was :0 and I rushed off to find suitable clothes for him. When I saw the first sketch, I was doomed - there was no way I wasn’t going to write something for it and that ended up being the first fic. I had no ideas about writing a series or considering story arcs or anything that complicated.
The three fics which followed came about through our conversations - all of them are, in one way or another, essentially based on prompts given to me by @theseavoices. It’s at a strange stage now where we’ve built this very strong world and I can’t wait for the opportunity to throw all that I’ve learned about writing over the past couple of years at Quicksilver. It’s actually been really good to pause with the series and let it mature a bit, before taking it any further. I know it’s been a long wait, and it will take a bit more time, but I hope it will be worth it :)
Thank again for your ask and letting me ramble on for far too long :)
@theseavoices I want to include you in this - anything to add?? and what’s *your* favourite art for the series?? :D

Finding His Alpha: Part 6
Finding his Alpha Part 6: The Long Wait
Nigel sat in the waiting room beside Bev, growing more and more anxious as time passed. His knee started bouncing as he waited, and he nervously picked at the rip in his jeans. As the two hour mark approached, Jack strolled in passed the nurses station and headed straight into the waiting room where he closed the door behind himself. Nigel instantly stiffened in his seat as he looked up at the other alpha.
"Listen here, I don't know what kind of sick joke this is," he started as he walked closer to Nigel, "but this is going to stop Hannibal. And why the hell isn't he cuffed?" Nigel's jaw clenched and his fingers dragged up his thighs as his gaze stayed locked on Jack's.  "Jack, I let him stay with me. We're still waiting to find out about Will; I couldn't even get Will here without Nigel," Bev spoke to her superior, "And no this isn't Hannibal. This is Nigel, Will's boyfriend." Jack whipped his head towards Bev, as did Nigel. "Boyfriend?" Back bellowed, "He's a spitting image for the man that nearly killed him?!" Jack kept bellowing, Nigel however kept his gaze on Bev. Boyfriend? Nigel didn't know Will had talked about him to his coworkers, let alone the fact that he’d be considered the younger man's boyfriend.
Jack started pacing and Nigel offered Bev a small smile as she turned to look at him. "Can I go check at the nurse’s station for information on Will?" Nigel asked and Bev rose from her seat just as Jack blew again. "No! You're supposed to be in cuffs, not walking around the hospital like a free man!" Bev rolled her eyes, and walked out of the room to head to the nurses station, leaving the two Alphas alone. "Have I don't something illegal to warrant being in cuffs?" Nigel asked calmly, which pushed Jack's buttons all the more. "You kidnapped an FBI agent! You'll see jail time!" Jack spewed, and Nigel crossed his left leg over the other.  "I did no such thing. Stan and Max were the ones that took Will. I stopped them from hurting him, I provided a place for him to recover for the night," Nigel corrected, "I'm sure once you speak to Stan and Max they will corroborate my claims." Jack started pacing the room, as he had already spoken to both men.
Jimmy and Brian were walking down the corridor towards the waiting room when Bev joined them, as they pushed open the door to the waiting room Jack was once again screaming at Nigel that he would see jail time. Jimmy shot his boss a strange look, "Uh, Jack, one of the suspects already told us what happened.  Nigel’s free and clear. He did not kidnap Will, nor did he beat him." The vein in Jack's neck looked like it was about to burst as he yelled once more. "He's not free and clear until I say he is!" Bev took her seat next to Nigel and extended her hand towards Nigel. "I'm Bev. Sorry that we had to meet under these circumstances, Will’s talked about you a lot," Bev smiles at Nigel as he shook her hand, "I will warn you, if you hurt Will like Hannibal did, I will kill you myself." Nigel couldn't hold back a laugh, and shook her hand firmly. "I am glad to hear Will has such protective friends, but to assure you, even without knowing this Hannibal, I have no intention of hurting Will," Nigel spoke honestly, but tucked away the name and every emotion that crossed the FBI agents’ faces when they mentioned Hannibal.  Nigel had been around the block enough times to know this Hannibal person must have been a cruel person.
One by one Jimmy and Brian introduced themselves to Nigel, and Jack rolled his eyes as he stormed out of the room. "Will's heading to his room shortly,  they patched him up," Bev explained, "he has a concussion, several broken ribs, stitches in his lip, and he has a hairline fracture in his right orbital bone." Nigel’s hands clenched on the arms of the chair, his knuckles turning white. He'd return the favor to Stan and Max, there was no question about that.  Bev reached over and rested her hand on Nigel's forearm. "He's okay Nigel, he'll heal. He got a good beating, and the nurse said he has a ton of bruises, but he'll be alright." Nigel offered her a warm smile, and nodded his head, "You bet your ass he will heal, pretty lady, I don’t plan on leaving his side until he does." Nigel's words made the team smile. They were more than happy to welcome Will's partner into their group, especially since he seemed so dedicated and protective, after all Will had been through he deserves no less.  Nigel rose from his seat. "I'm going to go across the road and get some coffee," and a pack or two of Marlboro's he thought to himself, "Before I head to Will’s room, anyone want some?" Jimmy and Brian declined but Bev said she'd take a cup.  "Keep an eye on him until I get back will you? Then I'll take over on guard duty." Nigel asked and it made Bev chuckle. "Of course I will." Nigel ducked out of the room, and could only imagine what they would say about him as he left. He shrugged the thought off as it didn't matter to him what they thought all that mattered to him was Will.
Nigel pulled his phone from his pocket and texted one of his associates as he rode the elevator down to the lobby. "Find me information about a man named Hannibal.  That's all I got. He knows my Will." Hitting send, Nigel dropped the phone back into his pocket and made his way quickly out of the hospital and across the street to the small gas station. Filling up two cups of black coffee for himself, Nigel moved onto fill a third, only then realizing he forgot to ask Bev what she took in her coffee. Nigel grabbed one of the to-go containers and added the three cups in it, using the fourth slot to add creamers and sugars just in case. Stopping at the cash register, Nigel grabbed a lighter and two packs of Marlboro’s. The young cashier made small talk with Nigel, avoiding all eye contact as he did so. Nigel thanked him and ran back across the road to the hospital’s smoking section. Without wasting any time he set the coffee tray down on a bench and opened his pack of Marlboro’s. Popping one out of the pack and between his lips, Nigel wasted no time lighting the end and taking a long drag. His eyes closed for a moment as he blew out a gray cloud of smoke, the nicotine calmed him almost instantly, and Nigel took another long drag.
Knowing he needed to get back upstairs Nigel leaned down and rubbed the cherry off the end of his cigarette on the tar at his feet. Nigel blew on the end making sure it was cold, before he tucked the partially smoked cigarette behind his ear. He picked up the tray of coffee and ducked back inside the hospital. There was a quick pace to his step as he hoped he had not missed Will waking up. Seeing the line at the elevator Nigel opted for the stairs; ran up to the 1st floor; thankfully not spilling any of the coffee on himself. He let out a breath of relief when he saw Will’s coworkers still sitting in the waiting room. Walking towards the waiting room, Nigel pushed open the door and stepped inside. “Any news?” He asked instantly as he sat down beside Bev. He pulled her a cup of coffee free, and then turned the tray towards her, showing the creamer and sugar. “Realized I Forgot to ask what you wanted.” Bev took the offered coffee and popped off the top, “The nurse just left, they are moving him now. We wanted to walk up with you to make sure he was all settled in, and then we have to get back to the office.” Nigel nodded his head, and took a swig off his coffee. “Your boss is a real piece of work huh?” Nigel asked, which made Bev shrug he shoulders as she stirred sugar and cream into her coffee. “He means well, but he can be hot under the collar sometimes,” Bev started, and Jimmy quickly chimed in, “With everything that’s been going on, it is quite warranted. We got a call saying Will was taken from the bar, when we tried to call his phone he didn’t answer.” Nigel set his coffee down as he looked between the three of them when Brian started talking, “Jack drove out to his house, and he wasn’t there, when he didn’t show this morning it threw up even more red flags.”  Bev let out a sigh and shook her head, “Basically we got a call this morning, stating that Will was at your address. We assumed the worst.” Nigel nodded his head, “Pretty lady, I’m not mad. You did what you had to do. The moment Will was brought to my house, I put an end to Stan and Max treating him like shit.” Nigel tried to explain but his attention was pulled away from Bev as they wheeled Will by the waiting room towards the elevator.
Nigel forgot about the coffee and jumped up out of his chair, he was the first person to Will’s side. “Is he alright?” he asked the nurse that was pushing the bed and wasted no time slipping his hand into Will’s. “You’re the boyfriend?” the nurse asked, and Nigel nodded his head. Will stirred slightly and his grasp tightened for a moment on Nigel’s hand. They stopped outside the elevator and waited for it to rise to their floor; Nigel leaned down and pressed a kiss to Will’s forehead. “He’ll be fine; he just needs some rest and some time to heal,” The older nurse spoke softly. Will’s co-workers quickly joined them at the elevator and Brian had grabbed Nigel’s forgotten coffees. “It looks like you four will have to take the next one,” the nurse spoke with a soft chuckle as she was crowded at the elevator. As the elevator chimed open, Nigel pressed a kiss to Will’s forehead once more, “Fourth Floor. Room 432,” The nurse explained to Nigel and he unwillingly let go of Will’s hand to let the nurse push the bed into the elevator. Nigel watched the doors close, and then scanned for the stairs, “You can grab the next one,” He spoke and ducked into the stairwell where he took the stairs two at a time to get to the fourth floor. The nurse was halfway down the hall with Will, when Nigel stepped out of the stairwell. A small smile curved onto his thin lips as he walked down the hall with a quickened pace. The nurse let out a small chuckle as she realized Nigel was right by her side, “Aren’t you quick,” she smiled and headed to Will’s room, “Will you get the door?” Nigel stepped infront of the bed and opened the door, holding it open for the nurse to push Will into the room.
Nigel followed her into the room, and glanced around as she wheeled the bed into place. Thankfully it was a private room, so he didn’t have to worry about a nosy bedmate for Will. The nurse promptly locked the wheels, and moved her way around the bed to hook Will up to a monitoring system. “He will need rest, I will be in and out every few hours to check on his vitals,” she explained to Nigel just as the team walked into the room, “If you need anything, just hit the buzzer on his bed and I will come in.” Nigel walked over and shook her hand, thanking her. “Thank you,” He glanced at her name tag, “Thank you Sharon, I will keep that in mind.” The woman nodded and ducked out of the room, and Nigel pushed a chair close to the bed. “Shit,” Bev mumbled as she sat on the edge of Will’s bed, opposite Nigel as he sat in a chair, “They got him good.” Nigel sucked in a deep breath, and reached for Will’s hand, holding it in between his two. Jimmy and Brian stayed quiet for a long moment, and Nigel was thankful for that as his mind was swirling with anger and frustration. Stan and Max would pay. Jimmy speaking broke him out of his thought, “Should we do anything? Get him anything?” he asked Bev, who shook her head, “No, he needs to rest, nothing we do can help right now.” She stood up from the bed, and walked to the small nightstand where she found a pad of paper and pen. “I’m going to leave you our numbers, “She explained, as she scribbled down a list, “All of our cells and our office. Please call if anything changes or when he wakes up.” She ripped off the sheet of paper and handed it to Nigel. Nigel carefully folded the paper and added it into the pocket of his shirt. “Will do pretty lady,” he spoke as his hand rested back on top of Will’s, “I won’t be leaving until he is.” Bev smiled and brushed a curl off Will’s eye lid, “I need to go have a conversation with these two scumbags.” Without another word, Bev walked out of the room with Jimmy, and Brian set the coffee down on the stand beside Nigel. “Thank you for staying, Will doesn’t usually talk a lot about the people he dates, but he has spoken a lot about you,” Brian rested his hand on Nigel’s shoulder for a moment, “He deserves a good man in his life. If you need anything call.” With that Brian left the room before Nigel could say thank you.
Nigel slid his chair closer, leaning over the bed he pressed a soft kiss to Will’s forehead, letting his lips linger against his skin. “Hey gorgeous,” he whispered as he rested his forehead gently against Will’s temple, his lips just barely brushing against his ear. “You’ll be alright. You have my word they will pay for this.” Nigel felt his phone vibrate in his pocket, but he ignored it; he let his eyes close as he focused his attention purely on the man before him. In that very moment all he wanted to do was switch places with Will, he would gladly endure the pain just so Will did not have too.

Run ragged
Tumblr media
It didn’t work.  And while I wasn’t surprised by that, I did want to tease out why, at least for myself.
I honestly was openly skeptical of Blade Runner 2049 for a while, so I can’t hide my bias there.  I wasn’t totally ‘salt the earth and never mention it again’ then and am certainly not saying that now.  But each new trailer left me feeling more ‘uh...really?’ and the explosion of immediate praise from many critics even more so.  I wasn’t contrarian, and neither did I think groupthink was at work, but I suspected a massive wish fulfillment was.
So I generally avoided reactions after that and figured I’d wait for things to die down a bit -- even more quickly than I might have guessed, seeing its swiftly collapsing commercial performance over here. My Sunday early afternoon showing near here was about maybe 2/3 full on its third weekend, so it’s found an audience, but I’m in San Francisco -- I expected an audience there. Enough friends have posted theater shots where they were the only person in the room to know this is dying off as an across the board thing, and never probably was.
I’m not glad it failed, but I’m not surprised -- in fact, being more blunt, I think it deserved not to be a hit.  The key reason for me played itself out over its length -- it was boring.  It’s a very boring movie.  It’s not a successful movie except in intermittent moments.
That said, of course not everyone agreed (I’ll recommend as an indirect counterpoint to my thoughts this piece by my friend Matt, which went up earlier today). And boredom is not the sole reason for me to crucify it -- there were a variety of things one can address.  I’ll note two at the start since they could be and in a couple of cases I’ve seen were particular breaking points for others:
* The sexual politics of the movie, however much meant to be in line with the original scenario as playing out a certain logic, were often at least confused or hesitant within a male gaze context, at most lazily vile beyond any (often flatly obvious) point-making.  I often got a mental sense of excuses that could be offered along the lines of ‘well...you know, it’s supposed to be like that in this world, it’s a commentary!,’ which is often what I’ve seen in positive criticism of, say, Game of Thrones. Maybe. That said: not that any sort of timing played into it, but the fact that Harvey Weinstein’s downfall began two days before release, and the resulting across-board exposure and on-the-record testimonials from many women against far too many men, couldn’t really be escaped.  Further, since the fallout was first felt, after all, in the film industry, seeing any film, new or old, through the lens of what’s acceptable and who gets through what hoops -- and who is broken by the experience -- is always important.  It’s not for nothing to note that the original film’s female lead Sean Young got shunted into the ‘she’s crazy’/’too much trouble’ file in later years where male actors might perhaps find redemption; the fact that she played a small part in the new film made me think a bit more on her fate than that of her character’s.  (Another point I saw a few women brought up as well -- having a key to the whole story be pregnancy and childbirth as opposed to infertility wasn’t warmly received.)
* It’s a very...white future. Not exclusively, certainly. But people of color barely get a look in, a quick scene here, a cameo there. A black female friend of mine just this morning said this over on FB about the one African American actor whose character got the most lines, saying:
to have the only significant black character be this awful, creepy man who seemed to be an "overseer" type to the children, was really uncomfortable and another perfect example of scifi using an 'other' narratives or american slave narrative but within a white context. We all know what it's supposed to represent and so it's just straight up lazy writing at the end of the day and exploitative.
Meantime, another sharp series of comments elsewhere revolved around how a film perhaps even more obviously drenched than the original in an amalgamated East Asian imaginary setting for the Los Angeles sequences barely showcased anyone from such a background. Dave Bautista certainly makes an impact at the start, but after that? The fact that I can think of three speaking roles for actors of that (wide) background in the original, as in actually having an exchange with a lead character, and only one in this one, maybe two if you count the random shouting woman in K’s apartment building, is more than a little off.  Add in a ‘Los Angeles,’ or a wider SoCal if you like, that aside from Edward James Olmos’s short cameo apparently has nobody of Mexican background, let alone Central American, in it, and you gotta wonder.  My personal ‘oh really’ favorite was the one official sign that was written in English and, I believe, Sanskrit.  Great visual idea; can’t say I saw anyone of South Asian descent either.
Both these very wide issues, of course, tie in with the business and the society we’re all in -- but that’s no excuse. And there are plenty of other things I could delve into even more, not least my irritation over the generally flatly-framed dialogue shots in small offices that tended to undercut the grander vistas, or how the fact that Gosling’s character finding the horse carving had been telegraphed so far in advance that it was resolutely unremarkable despite all the loud music, etc. My key point remains: boring.  A sometimes beautifully shot and visually/sonically striking really dull, draggy, boring film.
The fair question though is why I think that.  A friend in response to that complaint as echoed by others joked what we would make of Bela Tarr films, to which I replied that I own and enjoy watching Tarkovsky movies. Slow pace and long shots aren’t attention killers for me per se; if something is gripping, it will be just that, and justify my attention. Meanwhile, the original film famously got dumped on for also being slow, boring, etc at the time, and plenty can still feel that way about it. Blade Runner’s reputation is now frightfully overburdened and certainly I’ve contributed to it mentally if not through formal written work; it succeeds but is a flawed creation, and strictly speaking the two big complaints I’ve outlined above apply to the predecessor as much as the current film, it’s just a matter of degrees otherwise. But if you told me I had to sit down and watch it, I’d be happy to. Tell me to do the same with this one, I would immediately ask for the ability to skip scenes.
I’ve turned it all over in my head and these are three elements where things fell apart for me, caused me to be disengaged -- not in any specific order, but I’m going to build outward a bit, from the specific to the general, and with specific contrast between the earlier film and the new one.  These discontinuities aren’t the sole faults, but they’re the ones I’ve been thinking about the most.
First: it’s worth noting that the new film brings in a lot of specific cultural elements beyond the famed advertising and signs. Nabokov’s Pale Fire is specifically singled out both as a visual cue and as an element in K’s two police station evaluations, for instance. Meanwhile, musically, I didn’t quite catch what song it was Joi was telling K about early in the film but a check later means it must have been Sinatra’s “Summer Wind,” featured on the soundtrack.  Sinatra himself of course shows up later as a small holographic performance in Vegas, specifically of “One For My Baby,” while prior to that K and Deckard fight it out while larger holographic displays of older Vegas style revues and featured performers appear glitchily -- showgirls, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis in his later pomp, Liberace complete with candleabra. All of this makes a certain sense and on the one hand I don’t object to it.
But on the other I do.  Something about all that rubbed me the wrong way and I honestly wasn’t sure why -- the Nabokov bit as well, even the quick Treasure Island moment between Deckard and K when they first talk to each other. The answer I think lies with the original film. It’s not devoid of references either, but note how two of the most famous are used:
* When Rutger Hauer’s Roy Batty introduces himself to James Hong’s Hannibal Chew, he does so with a modified quote from William Blake’s America: A Prophecy. (This fuller discussion of that quote and how it was changed from the original is worth a read; it’s also worth noting that Hauer brought it to the table, and wasn’t planned otherwise.) But he doesn’t do so by spelling out to the audience, much less Chew, that it is Blake at all.  You either have to know it or you don’t. If, say, we saw Batty clearly holding a copy of the book -- or maybe more intriguing, a copy in Deckard’s apartment -- then that would be one thing...but it becomes a bit more ‘DO YOU SEE?’ as a result. Clunkier, a bit like how Pale Fire worked in the new film.
* Even in the original soundtrack’s compromised/rerecorded form, I always loved the one formally conventional song on the original soundtrack, “One More Kiss, Dear.” I just assumed as I did back in the mid to late 80s, when I first saw the film and heard its music, that it was a random oldie from somewhere mid-century repurposed, a bit of mood-setting. It is...but it isn’t.  It’s strictly pastiche, a creation of Vangelis himself in collaboration with Peter Skellern, an English singer-songwriter who had a thriving career in his home country. It just seemed real enough, with scratchy fidelity, a piano-bar sad elegance -- which was precisely the point. You couldn’t pin it down to anything, it wasn’t a specifically recognizable element. It wasn’t Elvis, or Liberace, or Sinatra.
This careful hiding of concrete details -- even when the original film showcased other clear, concrete details of ‘our’ world culturally, but culturally via economics and ads -- is heavily to the original’s benefit, I’d argue.  There’s a certain trapped-in-baby-boomerland context of the elements in the new film that, perversely, almost feels too concrete, or forced is maybe a better word. It’s perverse because on the one hand it makes a clear sense, but on the other hand, by not being as tied to explicitly cultural identifiers -- whether ‘high’ literature or rough and ready ‘pop’ or whatever one would like to say -- the original film feels that much more intriguingly odd, dreamlike even. I would tease this out further if I could, but it quietly nags -- perhaps the best way I could describe it is this: by not knowing what, in general, the characters, ‘human’ or not, read, listen to, watch in the original, what everyone enjoys -- if they do -- becomes an unspoken mystery. Think about how we here now talk about what we read, listen to, watch as forms of connection with others; think about how the crowd scenes in the originals feature people all on their own trips or in groups or whatever without knowing what they might know. We know Deckard likes piano, sure, but that suggests something, it doesn’t limit it.  We know K likes Nabokov and Sinatra -- and that tells us something.  And it limits it.
My second big point would also have to do with limits versus possibilities, and hopefully is more easily explained.  Both films are of course amalgams, reflections of larger elements in the culture as well as within a specific culture of film. The first film is even more famously an amalgam of ‘film noir’ as broadly conceived, both in terms of actual Hollywood product and the homages and conceptions and projections of the term backwards and forwards into even more work. It is the point of familiar reference for an audience that at the time was a couple of decades removed from its perceived heyday, but common enough that it was the key hook in -- the weary detective called back for one last job, the corrupt policeman, the scheming businessman, the femme fatale, etc. etc. Set against the fantastic elements, it was the bedrock, the hook, and of course it could be and was repurposed from there, in its creation and in its reception.
2049 is not a film noir amalgam.  Instead, it’s very clearly -- too clearly -- an amalgam of exactly the wrong place it should have gotten any influence from. By that I don’t mean the original film -- above and beyond the clear story connections, its impact was expected to be inescapable and as it turns out it was inescapable.  Instead it’s an amalgam of what followed in the original’s wake -- the idea of dystopia-as-genre -- and that’s poisonous.
Off the top of my head: Children of Men. The Matrix. Brazil. Her. Battlestar Galactica, the 2000s reboot. A bit of The Hunger Games, I’d say. A bit of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (not a direct descendant of the original at all, of course -- George Miller always had his own vibe going -- but I caught an echo still). The Walking Dead. A fleck of The Fifth Element. Demolition Man, even, if we want to go ‘low’ art.  But also so many of the knockoffs and revamps and churn. There could be elements, there could be explicit references, there could be just a certain miasma of feeling.  But this all fed into this film, and made it...just less interesting to me.
Again, the first film is no less beholden to types and forebears.  But the palette wasn’t sf per se, it was something else, then transposed and heightened and made even uneasier due to what it was.  2049 has to not only chase down its predecessor, it has to live with what its predecessor created.  But did it have to take all that into itself as well? It becomes a wink and a nod over and again, and a tiring one, a smaller palette, a feeding on itself. And it’s very frustrating as a result, and whatever spell was in the film kept being constantly rebroken, and the scenes kept dragging on.
This all fed into the third and final point for me -- the key element, the thing that makes the original not ‘just’ noir, the stroke of genius from Philip K Dick turned into tangible creations: the replicants, and the question of what it is to be human. Humanity itself has assayed this question time and time over -- let’s use Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as a start if we must for the modern era, it’s as good as any. We as a species -- if we individual members can afford the time and reflection at least -- seem to enjoy questions of what makes us ‘us,’ and what we are and what we have in this universe.  This much is axiomatic, so take that as read.
The replicants in the original film -- famously thought of differently by Dick and Ridley Scott, to the former’s bemusement when they met and talked for their only meeting before the latter’s death -- set up questions in that universe that are grappled with as they are by the characters in different ways. Between humans, between replicants, between each other, lines always slipping and shading. Their existences are celebrated, questioned, protested against. But we don’t live in these conversations for the most part, we tend to experience the characters instead; it’s often what’s unsaid that has the greatest impact. And if the idea of a successful story-teller is to show rather than tell, then I would argue that, again, flawed as it can be, the original film succeeds there be only telling just enough, and letting the viewer be immersed otherwise. (Thus of course the famous after the fact narration in the original release insisted upon by the studio, and removed from later cuts to Scott’s thorough relief.)
By default, that level of quiet...I would almost call it ‘awe’...in the original can’t be repeated with the same impact. The bell cannot be unrung, but that’s not crippling. What was crippling was how, again, bored I was with the plight of the characters in 2049. How unengaged in their concerns I generally was. One key exception aside, I never bought K’s particular angst outside of plot-driven functionality, and frankly they often felt like manikins all the way down from there. Robin Wright’s police chief had some great line deliveries but the lines were most often banal generalities that sounded ridiculous. Jared Leto’s corporate overlord, good god, don’t ask. As for Joi and Luv, Ana de Armas and Sylvia Hoeks did their best, and yet the characters felt...functional.  Which given the characters as such would seem to be appropriate, but their fates were functional too. Of course one would do that, of course the other would do that, of course one would die the one way, of course the other would die that way, and...fine. Shrug.
So, then, Deckard? Honestly Harrison Ford had the best part in the film and while I found him maybe a bit more garrulous than I would have expected from the character, he did paranoid, wounded and withdrawn pretty damn well. Not to mention comedy -- the dog and whisky combo can’t be beat, and it’s worth remembering his nebbishy ‘undercover’ turn in the original -- and, in the Rachel scene, an actual sense of pathos and outrage. I bought him pretty easily, and it made everyone else seem pretty shallow. When K learns about the underground replicant resistance and all, the bit about everyone hopes they are the one was nice enough, but the rest of it, clearly meant to be a ‘big moment,’ was...again, dull, per my second point about the limited palette. A whole lot of telling, not much showing, and such was the case throughout. It was honestly a bit shocking -- but also very clear -- to myself when I realized how little I cared about humans or replicants or any of it at all towards the end. It all felt pat and played out, increasingly unfascinating, philosophy that was rote. It could just be me, of course -- maybe this is an issue where the stand-ins of replicants versus realities of robots and AI, along with the cruelties we’re happy to inflict on each other, means the stand-ins simply don’t have much of an imaginative or intellectual grip now.
Still, though, I’ll give the film one full scene, without Ford. As part of his work, and to answer the questions in his own head, K visits Ana Stelline, a designer of replicant memories. This, more than anything else in the film outside of certain design and musical elements, felt like the original, or something that could be there. It introduced a wholly new facet -- how are memories created for replicants? -- while extending the idea that instead of one sole creator of replicants there are multiple parts makers with their specialized fields in an unexplained (and unnecessary to be explained) economy. Stelline’s literal isolation allows for space and the limits of communication to be played out in a way that makes satisfying artistic sense, and Carla Juri plays her well. It builds up to an emotional moment that sends K into an explosive overdrive that is actually earned, and Juri’s own reaction of awe and horror is equally good.  But -- even better -- the scene ends up taking a wholly new cast later in the film, when more information reveals what was actually at play, and what K didn’t know at the time, and makes the final scene a good one to end on in turn (and by that I mean back in her office, specifically).
The problem though remains -- one scene can’t make a film. One can argue that it’s better to reach and fail than not at all, but it’s also easily argued that one gets far more frustrated with something that could have worked but didn’t. I don’t think an edit for time would have fixed the film but it would have made it less of a slog while not sacrificing those visual/sonic elements that did work; it still would leave a lot of these points I’ve raised standing, but it would have gone down a little more smoothly, at least. But sometimes you’re just bored in a theater, waiting for something to end.
