You hear thumping in the distance, growing more frantic as they draw near. The door is kicked open suddenly, startling those who occupy the room. I close the distance between you and I and slam v*THIS*v on your desk, face up. Asthma taking over as my lungs wheeze. The clock strikes 10:30 PM. Still time to spare.
I have made it.
The only words spoken for the entirety of this endeavor, are thus:
"Happy Valentine's Day!"

Helloo, I'm really excited to req to you again! (until now I didn't have any req ideas..). May I req HCs of “Man. I was hoping you'd fall asleep in my arms.”, GN reader with Hirako (Bleach), Yato (Noragami), Edward (Fullmetal Alchemist) please? So maybe the movies could be the boring/not interested one he chose/picked but reader become invested in watching it that they ignore him?
Ahh im glad you like my writing :) Sorry this came out late!
Prompt HCs(Shinji Hirako/Yato/Edward Elric)
Prompt: “Man. I was hoping you’d fall asleep in my arms.”
Shinji Hirako
Tumblr media
He really didn’t expect you to be so invested in such a dull movie. He picked it on purpose, expecting you to be bored out of your mind and fall asleep in his arms.
A coward he may be, but clever nonetheless. If he was too shy to tell you how he felt, then why not figure out a way to get you to fall for him?
But, when the fall doesn’t happen, he turns to find you very concentrated in the movie.
That's when he had no choice but to push.
“Man. I was hoping you’d fall asleep in my arms.” He tried to sound bored, glancing here and there at you.
He thought he didn’t get a reaction from you, but after a few long minutes, you’re looking right at him with wide eyes. He returned the look, concerned if what he said was something he shouldn’t have said. He wasn’t expecting such a face from you.
“What?” He asks you.
“W-well…um…I just wasn’t expecting that from you,” you mumble, “w-were you trying to get me to do that?”
Shinji looked away in embarrassment, scratching his chin nervously. “I mean…it was an attempt. Did it work?”
Your face was red, making him smirk in slight victory. “Uh…it does sound appealing.”
He opens his arms for you to rest on his chest. He couldn't be anymore happier, knowing that he managed to get you in his arms.
Yato
Tumblr media
It was selfish, he knows, but he couldn’t keep it to himself any longer. As much as he cares for you, he just never found the time to admit how much he loves you to your face. So, he figured this just might do the trick.
To his surprise, though, he finds you so invested in the movie that was supposed to be boring for you.
He knows you to be the type to fall asleep if you were to get bored, so he for sure knew this would work. Apparently, he didn’t know you as well as he thought.
“Man…I was hoping you’d fall asleep in my arms.” He mumbled to himself. But he didn’t realize he said it aloud to where you could hear. He watched your eyes slightly widen as you watched the TV, slowly turning your head to him.
“H-huh?” You gasp lightly.
He already dug himself, might as well continue. “I mean…that’s uh…if you wanted to…?” Smooth, Yato. Real smooth.
You smiled and chuckled at his weird behavior. But you nodded and instinctively yawned. “Sure.”
He couldn’t feel anymore happier in his life. He couldn’t believe it actually worked, and he forsees his future to use this tactic whenever there was a good opportunity.
Edward Elric
Tumblr media
Television was always something boring in daily life. To Edward, at least. He’d rather go around and chase bad people or train than sit and watch something. But such an opportunity couldn’t be missed.
As often as his little brother nags him for never telling you his feelings, he feels pretty proud of himself at this moment. That is, until you didn’t fall asleep like he was hoping.
I couldn’t stop staring at you as you watched the television so intently. How could you like news on crime going around town on a night like this? He simply couldn’t understand you, but that's why he loves you.
Soon enough, you caught him staring at you. “What? Is there something on my face?”
He quickly cleared his throat, finally taking his eyes off of you. “Well….to be honest…I was hoping you'd fall asleep in my arms.”
“What?” You deadpan. This was not like the Edward you knew. If anything, he’d have training on his mind instead of someone he cares about. “What’s gotten into you?”
Now, he had to think of something. Of course, he didn’t have the guts to tell you his feelings at this moment, so instead, he thought of something else. “I just…I have a lot on my mind and need comfort.” He declares, head held high as if he is proud of something.
You raised your eyebrow. You weren't sure whether to believe him, but it isn’t really too far from the truth. As much as he’s gone through, it’s not surprising that he would need comfort here and there. With a sigh, you let yourself fall onto his shoulder. “Better?” You ask him as you slowly grow more comfortable leaning on him.
He nods slowly, wrapping his arm around your shoulders. “Y-Yeah…”

Alphonse Elric or Wrath (03) for the ask game :)
ALPHONSE ELRIC
favourite thing: I love how nice and gentle and sweet he is despite everything going on, but also in 03 how he has this anger and almost self disregard bubbling as time goes - when he's captured by envy thinking he should have died so many times in the past, when he tries to rip wrath arm off to give it to ed, when he recklessly sacrifices himself to try and save ed
least favourite thing: I feel like cos shortchanges him way too much. we get such a compelling insight into ed throughout the whole series even if much is implicit, but cos doesn't really reckon with either al losing his memory and how he feels about that or have time to deal w him regaining it and what that means for him and ed. and I get it's prob partially intentional because amnesiac al feeling more unknowable deliberately alienates us from him - he genuinely feels different, and we have to wonder if the recklessly cheery attitude is a facade to cope w missing ed. but nonetheless it feels like cos kindve demotes al from the co protagonist position he had throughout the series
favourite line: not fav for any deep content but i love the delivery - the bit in cos where ed lands in the armour pile, sees a helmet that looks just like al - and then its eyes light up and you hear a 'niisan..? NIISAN!!'
brotp: ed and al!!!! I love their relationship so much it is so deep and powerful. but also scar and al is such a nice duo - the way scar vicariously lives through the elrics brotherly love because he regrets letting his crush on human lust get in the way of telling his brother he loved him 😭 also al/wrath post COS bc the film left so much of their relationship unexplored and I need to know
otp: I think al/fletcher could be kindve cute. al/wrath too - I know some ppl find it icky bc of wrath viewing sloth as his mama but I feel like aside from the sloth/trisha distinction it doesn't really create a brotherly relationship btwn the elrics and wrath. and im just as content w it as a brotp too anyway so
random headcanon: not cis and not straight - being trapped in a body you don't recognise and feeling cut off from really living and engaging w the world is dripping w queer subtext! more specifically I like nonbinary gay al but I can really see it going in any direction. (altho I can't think of any girls I would want to ship him with in 03 or fmab)
unpopular opinion: uhh... I don't know how unpopular it is but him and mei as a couple in fmab does not make sense to me lol
song: currently I literally only listen to fma ops lol so I can't answer
fav pic: this is a tough one.... but
Tumblr media
WRATH (03)
fav thing: he is just such an interesting addition into the gaps of the source material?? making izumis baby who she tried to transmute into a homunculus is soo interesting even just in a meta sense, and the whole parent child switcheroo between sloth/izumi and wrath/elrics is so good
least fav things: I need to know more about him post COS and his relationship w al and winry and izumi!!!! especially since he was one of the few people who really knew wtf was going on down in the underground city along w rose
fav line: 'she was your mama too' when the elrics kill sloth. brutal
brotp: as above him and al but also I'm dying to know what his dynamic w winry was. and come to think of iit envy too honestly
otp: al/wrath ig (per the disclaimers above) but aside from that idk lol who do you ship him with
notp: I guess like with any adult I just don't like those kinda pairings. sloth w izumi would be especially yuck
random headcanon: he likes cats too. idk. just popped into my head
fav picture of them: DO I HAVE WRATH PICTURES? I'm sorry... my folder is dominated by the elrics... lemme see... I have this shot from the 4th ED lol

you know im down bad when im actually posting my fics on tumblr.

Lincoln McQuoid/M!MC || SFW || 3900 words :pensive: ||
Fic about two guys with terrible birthday experiences that are trying to do better. Set in a theoretical time after everything's been resolved. Timeline doesnt exactly match up since we're probably like a week away in game from Linc’s birthday but uuuh just pretend ok.
tw; mentions of under (american) age drinking (idk im european and he's 18 so its fine to me)
"Lincooooln." Horus calls lazily from the couch.
"What?"
"You know what day it is?"
Lincoln pads into the living room, his eyes narrowing at Horus. "The day the Elric brothers set their house on fire?"
Horus snorts, "Of course you would say that you weeb. Aaaand...what else is today?"
Lincoln sighs. "Who told you?"
"I'll let you take one guess at who'd be texting me about your well-being."
He buries his face in his hands and lets out another deep, soul-weary sigh.
"Abel says to tell you 'happy birthday' and to make sure that, quote 'he doesn't spend the whole day moping around his apartment alone watching daytime tv and getting drunk.' unquote. Ouch. You really spend your birthdays like that?"
There's a thoughtful frown on Lincoln's face, a look that Horus knows a little too well by now. He opens his arms invitingly, and a small smile plays on Lincoln's lips as he moves to join him on the couch, resting against his chest.
"Bad birthday memories?" Horus asks.
"Melancholic ones. I told you what happened on my seventh birthday. My mom still tried after that but it just... hasn't been the same since. And then I lost touch with Abel, and she..." his words trail off.
Horus' voice is quiet when he responds. "I know. I'm sorry."
Unsure of what else to say he simply wraps Lincoln in his arms. Instinctively Horus' eyes flicker to the empty spot on the wall where Silvia's portrait used to hang, a pang of guilt lancing through his heart. He must have apologized a thousand and one times already, but it still never felt like enough. Sometimes he catches Linc glancing over too, expecting it to still be there- for her to still be there.
His thumb subconsciously moves to twist at his mother's ring. It was a feeling he knew well.
"Okay I'm gonna be real depressing here," he starts, "but stay with me on this. Every year on my birthday my dad used to take us to this nice Egyptian restaurant. I'd get baklava and chocolate cake and some damn good chicken and then we'd go home and watch any movie of my choice, so we'd usually end up watching A New Hope again."
"And you're calling me a weeb? Nerd."
"Shut up, I'm being genuine here for once in my fucking life. Anyway. Point is. We'd get dinner, watch a movie together, I got some gifts, and it was the best day I could wish for. Then after... everything happened, Amalia and her parents took me out somewhere." He takes a moment to gather himself. Talking about the past five years was still hard at times, actually telling the truth of his hurt rather than lie and say he was fine. "I spent my eighteenth birthday crying my eyes out on the floor of a restaurant bathroom. Told Lia I got food poisoning, but I knew she didn't buy it. Next birthday was barely any better. Amalia was off to college by then, so me and my new best friend 'Fake ID' hit up every bar in town for a free drink for the birthday boy. I vaguely remember making out with some hot girl in a bathroom stall, but mostly I just remember feeling incredibly alone. And, well, nauseous."
"Is this story going anywhere or are you rambling?"
"Right. I'm trying to be profound. Well, tl;dr, birthdays sucked. At 20 I ignored my birthday and 21 I got shitfaced again, but this time legally. Then this year I happened to find myself in the area after a hunt. So I walked into that Egyptian restaurant, I got myself dinner and some baklava, found the nearest movie theater and watched, uh," he falls quiet for a moment, thinking hard, "I don't remember the movie's name, it was pretty forgettable I'll be honest. But it was the best day I'd had in longer than I'd like to admit. Whenever I closed my eyes I could almost feel my family sitting next to me. My dad's lame jokes, my mom's laughter. Annie stealing food off my plate when she thought I wasn't looking..." Horus is quiet for a moment. "Sorry, I'm making it about me again."
Lincoln turns over in his arms to face him. "It's alright. Honor their memory instead of burying it deep, right?"
"Yeah. But, if you do wanne just laze around all day and watch shitty movies I'm down for that too." he tightens his arms around him a little.
Lincoln hums, lying his head back down on Horus' chest, and he wonders if Lincoln could hear how his heart raced. Neither of them would spend another birthday alone if he had any say in it. They lay there a little while longer in comforting quiet.
Lincoln rouses after a while, quieting Horus' whine with an achingly sweet kiss as he heaves himself off the couch. "I think I know what I want to do today."
***
Their first stop was Westchester Elementary. Lincoln hadn't told Horus what exactly they'd be up to, wanting it to be a surprise. It was a warm autumn day, the warmth of summer not quite gone yet.
The sounds of children playing outside  accompanied by a quiet ambiance of rustling leaves and birds' song. It was strange how nice Westchester could be when horrible men and creatures weren't actively terrorizing it.
"So, this is where baby Linc took his first steps into becoming a menace to society?"
He rolls his eyes, but smiles regardless, "You know Russ, I don't actually know much about what you were like as a kid."
"Me? A model student once they got me to stop cutting up my clothes."
"That's what I thought." he holds out his hand, and by now it's second nature for Horus to grasp it as they walk along. Lincoln leads them to the side of the building, stopping before they round the corner.
"Close your eyes for me?"
For me.
The gentleness in Linc's voice over shadows any dirty jokes in Horus' mind. He simply smiles, "Alright." letting Lincoln lead him a little further away with his eyes closed.
He stops Horus, grabbing him by the shoulders and turning him around.
"Okay, now, open your eyes."
So he does. And before him, Horus sees something that was-
Tumblr media
A stunningly painted mural adorned the old plaster, a deep indigo blue of a night sky, swirling into the yellows and pinks of dawn. Against that backdrop was the silhouette of a woman, leading a chain of children of different ages toward the light of a new day under a bright shining star. More stars dotted the dark sky, painted in such a way that they almost seem to shimmer in the sunlight. Among them Horus managed to recognize a few constellations; the Scales of Libra, Aries the Ram, the Eagle Aquila, the Archer Orion-
His eyes flit to Lincoln, who in turn is watching him with searching eyes and a kind smile.
"It's gorgeous." Horus says after another breath. It was hard to put into words, but it felt as if a hopeful wish had been put into every brushstroke.
Having apparently found what he was looking for, Lincoln turns to the mural. "My mother painted this. She told me she started the first draft a few weeks after she found out she was pregnant. The actual mural didn't go up until I enrolled here, and I got special permission to 'help' her out during recess."
They walk up close, where painted in white, surprisingly neat, yet childish letters;
LINCOLN &
and then in a beautiful curling script;
Silvia McQuoid
Lincoln traces his fingers along the letters, closing his eyes, a smile painting his lips.
"There's more murals like these all around town. She'd always say this was her way of giving back a little kindness into the world. Something to inspire people." his eyes open again, looking up at the silhouette. "A couple were painted before I was born, but I loved coming along whenever I could. She always insisted that even if I just painted a single line, that I'd put my name up next to hers."
"She sounds awesome, wish I could have met her."
"She would have loved you, I'm sure of it."
Horus laughs, "Ha! You're just saying that because I'm your boyfriend."
Lincoln bumps his shoulder, "I mean it, Russ. Someone so full of life like you? She'd be making wedding plans after our first date."
Horus was not a shy or bashful man by a long shot, so the blush creeping up to his ears and the sudden stutter in his throat caught him off guard. His eyes flick over to Lincoln, who also seems to realize what he'd said with a start. He didn't want to read into it too much, his racing mind already looking for a way to change the topic, but a small voice in the back of his head tells him that if Lincoln had asked him right here, right now, that he would not mind at all. But then a suitable deflection comes to mind, blurted out a little too tense, a little too fast.
"I already promised to take you out for dinner today, no need to butter me up."
"Maybe I'm hoping to get free dessert too."
"I dunno, you find me a dark and quiet corner and I can get right on that if you're so impatient."
"At an elementary school? Really?"
"Ah, you're right. So are we going to your highschool next? Behind the bleachers maybe."
Lincoln laughs again, "Speaking of dinner, there's a few more murals I wanted to show you. Come on." Linc turns to head back to the motorcycle.
It was like a light bulb flickering to life over Horus' head as he realized exactly what he would get Lincoln for his birthday. He pulls out his phone, sending out a dozen texts as they walk, nearly missing the helmet Linc tosses him.
The last message is off and confirmed by the time they reach the second mural, and hours blur by as they ride all over Westchester. Every painting is somehow more gorgeous than the last, accompanied by anecdotes from Lincoln about inspirations, color choices, meanings. It was something incredibly dear to his heart, anyone could tell.
Horus steps up close to Lincoln, leaving a kiss on his cheek. "Thank you."
"For what?"
"Sharing this with me. But," he reaches his hand into Linc's back pocket, pulling out the motor keys, "I have a surprise for you too."
Lincoln raises a brow, but doesn't make to grab for the keys. "Where are we going exactly?"
"Ah-ah, wouldn't be a surprise anymore if I told you. But it's close by, I promise."
***
It's a short drive over. Horus parks the motor out on the side of the road, walking ahead down an alleyway to the back.
And as his friends had promised, strewn around a blank wall was everything needed to paint a mural of their own.
Brushes in all sizes, a dozen different colors of paint, lights that illuminated a smooth, blank canvas waiting to be filled. Off to the side lay a cooler filled with drinks, and a bag full of takeout food.
"But how…?"
Horus counts it off on his fingers, "Had Connor call in some favors at city hall for the permit, Lia brought the food, Joss got us drinks, Dee and Noah took care of the supplies, aaand," Horus lets out a sharp whistle, and Abel appears from around the corner carrying a cake, followed by the rest of their merry little gang. A chorus of "Happy birthday, Lincoln." rises from the group. Joss rolls her eyes.
"I'm just here for the cake." she nods her head toward Abel.
Linc's eyes grow wide."Is that…?"
"My mom's recipe? Yeah, I promised, didn't I?"
Horus pulls a lighter from his pocket, lighting the candles.
"Happy birthday to you." Abel starts, and Horus, Amalia, Connor and Dee are quick to join in, "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Lincoln, happy birthday to youuu."
The look in Lincoln's eyes is part horrified, part touched and wholly embarrassed as the song comes to an end.
"C'mon make a wish."
Lincoln walks up and thinks for a moment, and if Horus wasn't head over heels before, then the way that the candlelight flickered in Linc's eyes surely would have done the trick now. The moment passes as he closes his eyes, blowing out the candles in one big breath.
"Let's see if this cake lives up to the hype." Noah walks up, knife in hand, offering it to Lincoln to cut the first piece.
Abel looks offended, "You doubt my baking skills?"
"Cut him some slack," Connor says, "being a ghost for a few years made him forget his manners."
Noah just shrugs, taking back the knife to cut up pieces for the rest as Lincoln takes the first one.
The silence is broken by an incredibly inappropriate moan from Lincoln that almost sets something off in Horus. But that would have to wait until he had him all to himself.
"Just as good as you remember?" Abel says, unable to keep a large, goofy grin off his face.
"Better somehow." he takes another large bite.
Horus is handed a piece next and wastes no time shoving a large piece into his mouth. "Oh shit, this is good." Agreements ring out as everyone digs in. Their impromptu party is however quite short lived.
"As much as I wish I could stay," Abel says, "I was in the middle of grading papers that I really need to finish by tomorrow."
Amalia pipes up, "I should go too, I got a long drive ahead to get back in time for my lectures tomorrow if I want to get any sleep. Cake was totally worth it, though."
Connor walks up to Dee and Noah, slinging his arms around their shoulders. "The three of us promised Harper we'd stop by tonight to check something out, so we should get going too."
Jocelyn grabs another bite off the last slice of cake. "And I'm not hanging around to play third wheel to these two, so bye."
Horus waves her off. "Good night, Joss."
"Night, Red. Keep the old man’s spine intact.”
“Old man? I’m not even 30 yet.” Lincoln replies.
“I make no promises about his ability to walk tomorrow.”
Jocelyn grins, “Nice.” and heads off.
Abel hangs back for a moment, watching the others leave. He walks over to Lincoln, whose eyes still betray his feelings of guilt. Apologies were exchanged a while ago, but Horus could tell that Lincoln still had a hard time letting go of the hurt he caused.
"Abel, I-" but his words are cut off as Abel envelopes him in a hug. Lincoln hesitates for a moment, before hugging him back.
Abel lets him go, a kind smile on his face. "Happy birthday, old friend." he turns to Horus, giving him a nod, and Horus nods back.
And just like that it was only the two of them left again. Horus polishes the last crumbs off his plate, quietly thanking Abel and his mother for what was maybe the best cake he'd had, ever.
Lincoln walks up and hugs him tightly, burying his face in Russ' neck. And now it was Horus' turn to stand there for a moment, unsure of what to do, before he returns the gesture.
"Thank you," the words are a quiet murmur against the crook of his shoulder. "Thank you."
"I'm glad you like it."
"No, I liked spending the day with you. You doing this for me? I love it. I-" he hesitates on the word. Lincoln pulls back a bit, cupping Russ' face in his hands. "It means a lot to me. I just don't know what to paint."
He pulls him in for a kiss, short and sweet. But being pressed up against Lincoln's back all day on the motorcycle has left Horus with a desire for something more than that. He walks Lincoln backwards until his back hits the empty plaster wall, nearly tripping over a bucket of paint in his haste. He opens his mouth, and it was delicious, both of them still tasting of whipped cream and cake.
Lincoln flips them, so Russ' back is now to the wall and pulls back. A groan escapes him as he leans forward after Lincoln,
"Don't move." he places another kiss along his jaw.
"Hm?"
"I just figured out what I want to paint."
Horus stood there, chest heaving, pupils blown wide. "You're just going to leave me like this?"
He laughs, a bright and joyful sound, "I didn't exactly bring lube along."
"I'll run to the corner store and make the most suspicious purchase of my fucking life, I'll even throw in some roses, don't test me."
Lincoln comes back with a bucket of paint and brush in hand. "You can do whatever you want to me back at my apartment. Just keep still."
He opens the can, a deep blue, and gets to work tracing an outline around Horus, lingering around his hands, leaving kisses as he goes along. Up his arm, over his shoulder, a kiss under his ear.
"You're making it very hard to stand still, you know."
"Better keep at it. Don't want to get paint in your hair- hold out your hand a little."
Horus does as asked, moving as little as possible, as Lincoln traces the paint over his head and down his right side.
Lincoln steps back, admiring his handiwork- or maybe admiring Horus. With the way his eyes darted around it was hard to tell. He turns, reaching for a new brush and another can of bright red paint. It doesn't escape Russ that it's the same shade as the color of his hair. Lincoln holds them out for him to take.
Horus shakes his head "I'm not much of an artist."
"Just the rough outline, I'll take care of the details." Lincoln stands with his back against the wall, hand overlapping with the silhouette of Horus beside him.
"Alright, fine. For the birthday boy."
Horus then realized that he probably had not held a paintbrush in his hands in a decade, if not more. He wasn't nervous per se, but still very cautiously went to work, part of him afraid to mess it all up. He kneels down to get started by Lincoln's legs. The red paint stands in stark contrast against the gray wall, overflow dripping down, and suddenly Horus freezes.
His hands shake, breath catching in his throat, whole body tense and ready to spring. Blood dripping down the brush, out of a creature's mouth, covering his hands his eyes seeping into his chest the ground thick in the air-
A hand clamps on his arm and distantly his name reaches his ears -"Russ!"- his father telling him to run, Annie calling after him- he tries to pull away, hand balling into a fist so tight that his knuckles ran white, nails digging into his palm, fight or flight instincts setting in and he was afraid and wanted to, no had to fight there was no one else left-
"Horus!" Lincoln's hands frame his face, forcing him to look into his eyes.
"I'm-" the word comes out as a ragged breath. Adrenaline ebbs out, his heart still racing at a thousand miles a minute, but he was back in the here and now at least. Realizing what had just happened, Horus slaps on his trademark grin, the gesture not quite reaching his eyes. "I'll get lost in your eyes like this."
"You're shaking."
His hands still tremble a bit as he pries himself loose, "Low blood sugar, you know how it is. Maybe we should eat some of the take-out before it goes completely cold." he drops the brush back into the bucket, avoiding looking at it too closely.
"Horus-"
"There's one with chicken and one with beef, which do you want?"
Lincoln wraps himself around him from behind, plucking the beef noodles from the bag. "Talk to me, Russ. You were gone for a moment there."
Horus hops up onto a crate, opening his food up, his voice quiet, but finding its confidence as he talks. "Ugh. It doesn't usually happen, red is my favorite color, and I've seen worse whenever I need to dye my hair again- seriously makes my bathroom look like someone died there." he lets out a breath, combing his fingers through his hair, "but, I guess the paint just… took me off guard. I'll be fine after I eat something."
Lincoln sits next to him, frowning,
"I should have realized-"
"Don't. Don't start pitying me or, fuckin' saying its your fault. We were just making such good progress in getting you to stop blaming everything on yourself-"
"That's not true," Linc says matter-of-fact, "I blame plenty on Matthias."
Horus laughs. "True. But, yeah. I don't want my little episode to ruin this. I won't let it." He nods over, gesturing for Lincoln to go stand at the wall once they're done eating.
His hand still shakes a little as he traces the outline around him, but everything was further from Horus' mind now. Focus on the motions, focus on his warmth, his voice-
"Look at that. You're a natural." Lincoln says as he draws the final line, vaguely linking the hands of the silhouettes together.
"Are you gonna start pulling out gold stars next, or what?" He grabs himself a soda from the cooler, and a beer for Lincoln,
"Is that something I'll need to keep in mind?"
"Everyone likes being told they're doing a good job, no? Don't worry about the drinking by the way, I'll drive us back."
"Sure, but if I start lamenting about Naruto, cut me off."
"No, please tell me more about how Naruto and that black haired guy were totally in love."
"Oh, like you're any better about your space movies."
"I just have a lot of feelings about the Clones, okay!"
Conversation flows and time flies as Horus watches Lincoln get to work. It was mesmerizing to see how the piece came together, stroke by stroke; two silhouettes, hand in hand with a ribbon tying their hands together. Horus' figure set in a royal blue, Lincoln framed by an explosive red, the tie that binds them red on one side, blue on the other. The message rang clear; I’m a part of you, you’re a part of me.
"Now all that's left," Lincoln cracks open a black can of paint, dipping in a smaller brush. "is signing it."
He signs his name in beautiful curling letters;
Lincoln &
Before holding out the brush to Horus, who glady, if a bit messily, adds his name underneath;
Horus Asar

no no, don't shut up, please elaborate
we making a crack fic now? okay we making a crack fic now
Okay so like this is all off the top of my head but what if since New Hyrule is so disconnected from Old Hyrule that the portal he was supposed to go through got a little. fucked up. Idk he drove his train into it or something. And you know all the train imagery from FMA. (He also had Zelda with him at the time because I said so.)
So like he comes out of the portal and almost hits aNOTHER train on the track hes on before wildly swerving to the side and braking really hard. The train he almost hit just happens to have the Elric brothers in it on their way to Central? I think? That happened in the early story right? (sorry im a bit confused on event details its been a while).
So anyway the Elrics come out to see what the fuck was up with the bastard that almost hit them and they find a weird-ass tiny train making its own tracks and you can almost see the stars in their eyes as they gaze upon this wonder of alchemy. (Literally, in Alphonse's case.)(I'm having too much fun with this.)(His eyes operate like Phantom Zelda's because I said so.)
Engineer Link and Zelda climb out of the train after finally getting it to stop and do the. do the crossover fic thing where they lock eyes with the other main characters and each one of them is going "who tf is that" in their heads. Zelda immediately realizes what Alphonse's deal is, Edward is estatic that there's finally someone smaller than him, Alphonse is running threatAssessment.exe, and Link is just hoping he can go home and catch a break all he wanted to do was take a quick trip out with Zelda please-
I just realized I don't actually have a frame of reference for how Ed would act upon meeting somebody Interesting because every time he meets someone in canon it's because they're trying to kill each other—halp

no home audio drama castings teehee i'll list a couple roles they've played before (a lot of these guys are pros that have voiced a lot of chars so i'll just list a few that i think will be the most recognizable to you guys) with links to clips if possible. i also found this youtube channel that compiles voice lines from all the characters that a va has played, which i will also link when available
haejoon will be voiced by 신용우/shin yongwoo! he's voiced jumin in mysmes (sorry about the clip. it was the first one i found that was just him) and milk cookie in cookie run kingdom. here are his comps: p1, p2, p3
child haejoon will be played by 김선혜/kim sunhye. had trouble finding other clips for her, but here are her comps: p1, p2, p3, p4
eunyung's va is 심규혁/sim gyuhyuk who is also the va for yoosung from mysmes and herb cookie from cookie run kingdom. his series has a lot of parts.... p1, p2, p3, p4, p5, p6, p7, p8
juwan will be voiced by 홍범기/hong bumki. i couldn't find any good/notable clips for him but he's also voiced a lot of characters: p1, p2, p3, p4, p5, p6, p7
mari will be voiced by 김하루/kim haru! there was no comp for her on the youtube channel but she voiced cherry blossom cookie in kingdom and smash legend alice's korean version (couldn't find a good clip...)
minju's voice actor will be 강시현/kang sihyeon. she also did not have a voice line compilation but she voiced latte cookie in cookie run kingdom!
hara's gonna be voiced by 김나율/kim nayul who voiced rye cookie in cookie run kingdom as well as octavia from smash legends (couldn't find a clip)
haejoon's mom will be voiced by 문선희/mun sun-hui. she voiced sea fairy cookie in kingdom. there wasn't a comp for her on the same channel as the one i've been linking so far, but i did manage to find a comp video from a different channel!
okay, i'm feeling kind of lazy and since the rest of them are all minor characters from here on out i'll just try to find comps and link those instead of looking for notable character's they've voiced and linking individual clips. sorry ^^
juwan's mom will be voiced by 안경진/ahn gyeongjin. here's a comp for her, from the same channel as haejoon's mom's
mari's aunt will be voiced by 김현심/kim hyeonsim. she actually has a series of comps from the first channel i mentioned: p1, p2, p3, p4, p5, p6
mari's brother will be voiced by 박성태/park sungtae. he has the most comps so far lmao: p1, p2, p3, p4, p5, p6, p7, p8, p9, p10, p11, p12
there was no mention of casting for mari's dad? idk
minju's mom's va is 손정아/son jungah. she also has comps from the first channel: p1 and p2. she dubbed edward elric from fma btw. sorry i just think that's funny
minju's dad will be voiced by 임채헌/I\im chaeheon. i couldn't find any clips or comps for him!!!! sorry :(
hara's mom will be voiced by 김옥경/kim okkyung. here's part 1 and part 2 of her voice line comps
hara's dad's voice actor is 이인성/lee inseoung. his voice line comps: p1, p2, p3, p4
the one teacher's gonna be voiced by 성완경/sung wankyung. here are his comps: p1, p2, p3
kim dongju will be voiced by 이경태/lee gyeongtae. his comps: p1, p2, p3. i found this youtube channel that i'm 95% sure is his. he does a lot of song covers on it!!

oh its spelled psiren ope
like she’s literally a batman villain...
oh my god...............the tiddy grab. my son would never

is this her homunculus tat or just a random alchemy tat
the added plotlines and original content continue to confuse and astound me every single time....

collision moments
hello ppl im back with another FMAB fic this time featuring my best girls, Olivier and Izumi. there’s a chance i do another fic in this series but tbh i’ve struggled with it so who can say whether it’ll happen or not lol. (also on ao3)
~~
Olivier Armstrong prided herself on her refusal to give in to fear.
It wasn’t that she was fearless. To never be afraid would take away the core of her humanity — even the Humunculi, it had been reported, seemed to hold some level of fear, if for nothing more than their own death. Unlike what she let so many men believe, she wasn’t void of the feeling: she simply knew how to handle it. She’d spent a lifetime refusing to allow it to transform into cowardice, to let it debilitate her. Survival depended on the ability to compartmentalize, to fight off paralysis long enough to eliminate the threat. In battle, she would never waver. She would never allow someone to see through her, to let her own feelings fan another’s spark of hesitation into a flame of weakness. She’d stand in front of them like the very wall they compared her to: unwavering and unbreakable.
But compartmentalizing was only effective if there was some form of relief. So it was in the cover of night, when no one was there to follow her lead, that the cracks began to show.
Tonight, she saw the beast. In her dreams it stood in front of her exactly as it had that morning, it’s eyes lifeless and it’s skin impenetrable. She’d beaten it before, but the variables had changed. Central City was too warm, too populated, its men unaccustomed to the survival instincts those at Briggs relied on. And there was Alex, fighting alongside her, and for all her complaints and her irritation, she couldn’t stop her heart from skipping beats with every blow he took. Especially when he took them for her.
She watched her brother defeat it time after time, only for sparks to sew its artificial limbs back together. She could feel the blood dripping down her face, blurring her vision and painting the room red. The pain in her arm screamed, and it took more energy than she’d care to admit to ignore it. Alex held his own scars, blood decorating his face as well, and as it began to charge, a part of her thought that, at the very least, their deaths would be honorable.
A fist of stone punched through the wall, through her thoughts of honor and sacrifice, and for a moment the end didn’t feel imminent anymore. The woman fought with grit, cracked a smile at the sight of the beast before them. As she pieced together her identity, she thought perhaps she was looking at the reason those brothers had lasted as long as they did, the reason they’d managed to hold their own alongside her men. The survivor mentality surrounded her, shined like the glow of the colors they sometimes saw in the northern sky, just defined enough to know it wasn’t a trick of the light.
In an instant, they were on the stairs. Olivier silently begged her mind to wake up, to leave before it happened again, because there was one moment that scared her beyond belief, more so than the monsters and the soldiers without souls, more so than dying alongside her brother in the heat of the city.
Her brain refused to give her the relief of avoidance. Perhaps this was the cost, the price she’d have to pay for holding herself together when it happened. The eye appeared out of nowhere, opened up as if it was emerging from inside the earth. Izumi screamed as the hands pulled her apart, piece by piece, until there was nothing left. In dreams she often saw reality in brutal slow motion, every misstep spotlighted so bright she couldn’t ignore it, but not tonight. Tonight, it blinked and took her as fast as it had in real time.
The only way she could think to describe it was forbidden; no human should be able to witness what she saw and walk away with a sound mind. Olivier couldn’t tell if it swallowed her whole or simply snapped her out of existence. Worse than the sight of it was the feeling, Izumi’s hand in her own turning into nothing but air. Despite her strength and her unfailing grip, when it mattered most, she wasn’t strong enough to hold on.
In the safety of her subconscious, she allowed herself to give in to the terror she’d buried. It pressed down on her chest like a weight she wasn’t strong enough to lift. Tears fell from her eyes and she let them, just this once, because she truly thought they’d all meet their ends, losing to something she couldn’t even begin to comprehend. And she couldn’t shake the feeling that if she'd held her a little tighter, if she hadn’t needed help in the first place, it could have all been avoided. She wouldn’t have had to listen to the desperation in Sig’s voice, to watch as he searched for someone that may no longer exist. The blame sat heavy on her shoulders, and she let it suffocate her.
Olivier woke with a gasp. The first thing she noticed when she opened her eyes was the lights. The brightness rivaled the sun’s reflection on the snow, a sight that could cost a man their life in the North. She shut her eyes again, a groan slipping out before she could stop it.
“It’s about time you woke up.” Olivier felt the lights dim around her. She hesitantly opened her eyes again, turned her head and found Izumi sitting in a chair, mindlessly turning the pages of the book in her hands.
A hundred questions sat on her lips, but she settled for the important one: “How long was I out?”
Izumi shrugged. “About a day, give or take.”
That couldn’t be right. She glanced out the window, saw the afternoon sun hanging in the sky, and it was exactly as she remembered but...but she hadn’t been inside. She’d been brought up from under the ground, she’d seen the youngest Elric brother stand in his own skin, and then...and then…
She tried to sit up, but her body screeched at the first hint of movement. Every bone throbbed, every muscle ached. Injury and pain had never been a stranger, but this rivalved her worst moments. Holding her breath, she gingerly settled back down.
“You’ll want to take it easy,” Izumi told her. “Doctor said you took quite a nasty blow to the head. He wasn’t sure how you’d survived it, let alone the damage to the rest of you.”
Olivier scoffed. “Then he’s an idiot. It’ll take more than some falling stones and a beast as idiotic as that one to kill me.”
“Yes,” she said with a grin. “From what I’ve seen, I don’t doubt it.”
She turned her attention back toward the window. Her brain tried its best to think back to the fight, to the aftermath, but even trying to think made the pain so agonizing she was forced to shut her eyes again. Damn Bradley, and damn his fucking monsters with their sorry excuse for a life and their outright refusal to die.
“How—“ she asked in between labored breaths, “how did I get here?”
Izumi hesitated. “How much do you remember?”
Normally, she’d refuse to give up anything that could be used against her, especially to someone outside of Briggs. She was vulnerable here, confined to her bed, body broken and bruised and memory ridden with holes. Logic said to keep her mouth shut, but there was something about her. She may not have been one of her soldiers, but her gut told her that Izumi Curtis was someone she could trust. And her gut was never wrong.
“I know about Alphonse. You carried us up to the surface just in time to see him stand. After that, there’s nothing.”
Izumi nodded. “At first, everybody celebrated. It was calm, even after everything that had happened. Al getting his body back...well, it was about as clear a victory as any.”
Olivier watched the way she smiled at the thought, the way her eyes held unshed tears. Truthfully, the boy getting his body back hadn’t been at the forefront of her concerns, but she’d hoped for their sake they’d accomplish it. And hearing her talk about it, about both of the Elric brothers, it became increasingly clear that despite her intensity and her ruthlessness, Izumi cared deeply for the two of them.
“What happened next?”
Izumi laughed. “You happened next. You walked up and demanded someone take Al to a hospital, before his weakened body gave out on him.”
Oh. Well, she wasn’t wrong. The boy had been nothing but skin and bones, the textbook image of malnourished. She would bet that Edward might not have appreciated her interruption, but he’d come to understand her later.
“And did they? Take him to the hospital?”
“Your brother did. Lifted him up and carried him there himself.”
“I assume he cried the whole time?”
“Like an infant.”
Olivier groaned. “My brother’s soft heart and hysterics will be the end of him one of these days.”
“You should have seen him in here earlier, blubbering over you.” She scoffed. “Men and their emotions. They just don’t know how to control themselves.”
She hummed in agreement. “It’s a disease if you ask me.”
Izumi nodded, before adding, “Although, perhaps it was better that he left when he did.”
“And why is that?”
“Once he carried Alphonse off the battleground, you began commanding all the people who were left. You coordinated trucks to take the injured to the hospital, communicated with the soldiers still out in the streets. It was impressive, until you gave your last order and promptly collapsed.”
If her arm hadn’t been bound to her chest, she would have curled both fists in frustration. A leader never showed weakness like that, not even after the battle came to an end. Her reputation would need patching, of that she was certain.
If she noticed her embarrassment, Izumi didn’t comment on it; instead, she shrugged and said, “It could have been worse. Most of the soldiers had already dispersed. Plus, you didn’t hit the ground. Not sure your body could have taken another blow like that.”
Maybe it was the head injury, but she couldn’t fully comprehend the words she was hearing. “How is that possible? That I fell but never reached the ground?”
“Simple. I caught you.”
As if her humiliation couldn’t get any worse. The thought of being caught like an overwhelmed maiden made her want to take her sword and plunge it through her body herself, but instead she sighed and said, “I suppose I owe you an extra bit of gratitude, then.”
“Nonsense. I’m a housewife — I’m meant to take care of others.”
“You’re much more than that. The way you fought that beast was as impressive as any warrior I’ve seen.”
Izumi smiled. “I must admit, it felt nice to fight something that presented a challenge. And I’d been itching to let my alchemy loose ever since Hoenheim healed my ailment.” She laughed to herself as she said, “Vomiting blood would not have been an impressive conclusion to a battle like that.”
Olivier raised her eyebrow. “Vomiting blood?”
“A consequence of my visit through the portal. Physical exertion like that used to leave me bedridden for days.”
She wasn’t sure how to respond. The image of Izumi confined to a bed was almost as unimaginable as the one of her desperate enough to attempt human transmutation in the first place. She’d chalked up the Elric brother’s mistake to childhood idiocracy and arrogance, but she couldn’t fathom what would lead a woman like Izumi to do the same.
“You’re wondering who it was,” Izumi said, her tone attempting neutrality and almost succeeding. “You’re wondering who I tried to bring back.”
“I understand if you want to keep that information to yourself. You don’t owe me any kind of explanation.”
“No, but I think I’ll give you one anyway.”
The answer surprised her. “Why?”
“Because I’ve spent years forced to pretend it never happened. The attempt alone is enough to get me arrested, or worse. But ever since Ed and Al came back, ever since they figured it out...I’m not sure why, but it felt nice. Talking about it. Not trying to hide from it. I’d like to continue to do that, if I can.”
Had she been in a different place, a different time, she may have left it at that. Instead, her thoughts slipped through her mind’s weakened blockade, materialized right in front of her. “I know this topic is...delicate. For all his flaws, my brother is the one who knows how to provide comfort. If you’re looking for sensitivity, you won’t find it here.”
The words felt like a confession. She’d always been this way, cold and callous and short-tempered when it came to matters of the heart. It wasn’t that she couldn’t sympathize with anyone (although, in all honesty, she found many of the so-called problems people claimed to have were weak excuses for pain, and didn’t deserve her sympathy in the first place), but she had never known how to express the feelings properly. Her and her brother could be pinpointed on opposite sides of a spectrum, and while she’d choose her position over his a thousand times over, she could still admit that, outside of the battlefield and the barracks, her lack of emotional expression could be perceived as a shortcoming.
“I’m not looking for someone to cry for me,” Izumi told her. “I’ve spent enough years crying for myself.”
“I don’t mean to be rude. But I don’t know what it is I have to offer you.”
“How about a captive audience?” She said the words with a smile, and despite the fact that Olivier could hear the lie in her voice, she decided not to call her out on it.
Izumi put her book down beside her, but she let her gaze drop, spoke to her lap instead of her face. “Ever since I was a girl, I’d longed for motherhood. Most people never expected it of me. Those who knew me wouldn’t have described me as the nurturing type, and they wouldn’t have been wrong to do so. I spent so many years wanting. It made me angry, how much I desired, how much I had to fight for every piece of it. The ability to make decisions for myself. Independence and strength. An education. I wanted it all, and I wanted a child of my own. A legacy.
“When I got pregnant,” she continued, “I thought I would finally get to stop fighting. Sig and I, we’d spent so much time trying. I’ve heard some describe motherhood as a gift or a miracle, but to me, it felt like a victory. A battle I’d finally won.” Her tone softened when she said, “I made the mistake so many do when their mind is clouded with arrogance. I celebrated too early.”
A part of her didn’t want to hear what came next. Listening to this story was like witnessing a car crash and knowing you didn’t have the time to avoid the collision. There were only two options: watch it happen, or close your eyes. Either way, the end was inevitable. The only difference would be whether to spare yourself the added pain, to become blind to the indisputable evidence laid out in front of you.
Weaker men often chose to hide. In the collision moments, plenty of strong men did, too. But she’d never been the type to look away when faced with the incoming hurt; she wasn’t going to start now. So she said nothing, showed nothing. She simply waited for Izumi to find her way to the conclusion.
After a moment of hesitation, she did. “Our baby never cried. Never made so much as a sound.”
Every puzzle piece clicking into place only made her regret asking. When the Elric brothers told her about their mother, they’d done so mostly out of necessity. It was all connected — their action, their bodies, their shared enemy. It pained them, obviously, but she hadn’t realized how much of that pain had been clouded by the looming danger. They’d told her, but not like this. Nothing like this.
Izumi stared right through her, like she wasn’t even there. “Silence had never felt so sharp. So present. It was like it was making fun of me, drowning out all my claims of strength by reminding me just how little I could control. Even now, in the quiet, I still hear it. The mockery. It drove me to lengths I never thought I’d go, carried me past lines I never thought I’d cross.” She tried to laugh, but it never stood a chance. Nothing about this was funny. “You can fill in the blanks of what happened next.”
Olivier waited for more; when it became clear there was none, she began searching for words of her own. She wondered, for a moment, whether now would be the time to channel Alex, to speak the way he might. But his words would sound fake coming from her. Even if they were the right ones.
In the end, she settled for sincerity. “Boy or girl?”
Izumi blinked, and Olivier watched as her eyes refocused. She could hear the joy hidden in her response. It was buried underneath the hurt, just barely poking through the rubble, but it was still there when she smiled and said, “Girl.”
She nodded. There wasn’t much else to do. “I’m sorry.”
“As am I.”
Silence slipped back in. Olivier thought about her words, about the noiselessness. She’d never been one to relax in the quiet. Any good soldier knew that the most dangerous of enemies hardly made a sound, but right now it felt almost tangible. The weight of it grew with every passing second. Loss was heavier than any object she’d come across, and while she was no stranger to it herself, this pain Izumi described felt harsher than any she’d ever experienced.
As the seconds passed, she felt a restlessness unrelated to her physical incapacitation. Uncertainty crept up on her, and in its presence she found her thoughts from yesterday’s battle, the observations that now felt increasingly relevant.
“Well,” she told her, “If it’s a legacy you want, I’d argue you’ve already got one.”
“What do you mean?”
“You taught the Elric brothers. Their success is your success. And right now, they have a significant share of it.”
Izumi shook her head. “It’s not the same.”
“I know. But it’s close, is it not?” Izumi hesitated, before nodding. Olivier shrugged and said, “Maybe one day close will be enough.”
She spoke with more confidence than she felt. An old habit from childhood, when she’d learned that faith in oneself could be manufactured, that pretending to have it could make it appear. She may not have her brother’s alchemic strength, but in her mind she’d discovered her own kind of magic, one that had yet to let her down.
“You know,” Izumi said after a moment. “I don’t think you were honest with me earlier.”
Olivier frowned at the accusation. “I’m not sure what you mean.”
“You told me I wouldn’t find comfort here, when in fact, I think you may have told me everything I needed to hear.”
She had to bite back the smile that threatened to make an appearance. “If you ever tire of the warmth, I could use someone like you up North.” Olivier knew the suggestion was nothing more than a courtesy, but she meant it. A spirit like Izumi’s was hard to teach — often, it had to be found. And she’d never found anyone quite like her.
“I appreciate the offer, but my life is here. I’m not ready to give that up just yet. Although,” she said with a grin that could only be described as mischievous, “I won’t lie and say I didn’t enjoy fighting alongside you and your brother.”
She couldn’t help but match her expression. “You should see me fight up North.”
“A spectacular sight, I’m sure. Though I don’t think you’ll be fighting any battles in the near future.”
“I wouldn’t rule the possibility out just yet. Reconstruction is no simple task, and there’s a lot of idiots still hanging around in the military. And that’s not including the ones on our side.”
She groaned at the prospect, at her own reminder of what frustrations lay ahead. Just the thought of having to work alongside Mustang during this incoming period of transition was enough to bring her headache back.
Izumi laughed. “I don’t envy you and your companions for the job ahead of you. The complexities of bureaucracy were never of much interest to me.”
“A necessary evil, I suppose, albeit an annoying one. Governing would be so much simpler if we disregarded the absurd level of formality and politeness demanded by those in charge.”
“The perk of teaching the Elrics on my own — I never had to adhere to such ridiculous standards.”
Izumi looked so much calmer, so much happier, that Olivier almost didn’t ask. But curiosity and boredom formed a crossroad with opportunity, and holding her tongue proved to be much more difficult than she’d expected. “Will you continue teaching?” She asked. “Now that your ailment is healed, that is.”
She hesitated, and for a moment Olivier longed to take back the question. “Maybe,” she finally said. “The future isn’t as clear as it once was.”
“I suppose that’s the beauty of it.”
“Yes,” Izumi said. “I suppose it is.”
Unconsciousness tugged at her brain. Olivier tried her best to resist it. There was work to be done, after all. Their revolution didn’t have the luxury of idle time — there was a country to rebuild, and she would be crucial to its second life. Yet, lying there, conversation dwindling back into the comfort of silence, she found it hard to stay awake. The weight on her eyes wasn’t just from the pain, or the medication, or the head injury; she found herself at ease here. It was a feeling she often avoided in the North, and one she certainly hadn’t known in Central City for quite some time.
Izumi noticed, which didn’t surprise her. “I should let you rest. When you wake again, I suspect responsibilities will be waiting for you.”
“Before you go,” she said, “I wanted to thank you. You saved my life, and my brother’s. That’s not an act I take lightly. I owe you a debt I may never be able to repay.”
She smiled, but this time it was softer, lacking the bite and mischief of the one she’d worn earlier. “Fix this country, and we’ll call it even.”
Olivier couldn’t hide a groan as she put her remaining energy into lifting her free arm, extending her hand out as best she could.
Izumi looked at it, before laughing. “Guess even you aren’t immune to the military’s ridiculous formalities. Is a vow in words not enough? We need to shake on it?”
“It’s—“ she held her breath, gave herself two seconds to let the pain subside, before continuing, “—not about the military.”
Recognition came over the other woman quickly. Olivier wondered how she remembered the moment, her own disappearance. How it might have felt. Part of her longed to ask about it, but so much had been given to her today — it felt insensitive to want more. Not to mention it wasn’t answers she needed: it was confirmation. Indisputable proof of her own that, despite her own failure, she’d truly come back.
Izumi didn’t take her hand; instead, she kept her eyes on it, like it might disappear if she looked away. “I hope you know there was nothing you could have done to prevent that.”
“Had we not needed your help, then—“
“Then I would have been taken somewhere else, and my husband would have been left stranded on the street instead of in your company. Trust me when I say that sticking with you was the best thing we could have done.”
Olivier closed her eyes. The pain still lingered, her outstretched hand dropping slightly with each passing second. She wasn’t one to dwell often, and the logical part of her understood that few people could stand up to alchemy as advanced as what she saw yesterday. But none of that changed what she knew to be true.
She opened her eyes, waited to speak until she caught Izumi’s gaze. “Regardless of the circumstance, you saved me. And I couldn’t save you. For that, you have my sincerest apologies.”
Izumi finally took her hand. Olivier forced her mind to pay attention, to commit this moment to memory, because she knew in the coming nights, when she saw her failures again and again, she’d need it. She’d need to remember.
A handshake could tell her more about a person than any words they might say. It spoke not only to their character, but also to their perception of her. Yesterday, Izumi’s grip had been firm, communicating mutual respect and self confidence. It was looser this time around, more delicate, but Olivier could tell the change wasn’t an insult or an indication of weakness — it was a sign of care. Thoughtfulness, the type only found in nurturers, given to her in perhaps the only way she’d accept it.
“My husband said you refused to stop searching for me.” She spoke softly, kept their hands clasped together. “I appreciate that.”
“Of course. I’m not in the business of leaving my people behind.”
The grin spread quickly, until it took over Izumi’s entire face. “I’m your people, huh?”
Olivier tried to humor her, but sincerity won in the end. She wasn’t entirely sure when it happened. During the battle, maybe, or the conversation on the stairs afterward. Maybe it didn’t happen until today, until she’d woken up and found her sitting by her side. Either way, the truth couldn’t be denied: Izumi was one of hers now. Not a soldier under her command, but a companion she knew she could trust. And that meant there was nothing she wouldn’t do to keep her safe.
“Yes,” she told her. “You are.”
“Do I get a say in this grouping?”
Olivier raised an eyebrow at her. “Would you object to it if you did?”
The standoff only lasted a few seconds before Izumi burst out into laughter, finally breaking their handshake to wrap her arms around her sides. She tried not to focus on how deeply she felt her absence, how cold her palm became without Izumi’s hand to keep it company.
“No,” she said lightly. “No objections here. Although if I’m really part of your group now, I wouldn’t mind a chance to test out that sword of yours.”
Her eyes narrowed, and she fought a grin of her own. “Don’t push it.”
Izumi just kept laughing. She wasn’t prepared to like the sound so much, to feel it echoing in her chest. To feel the desire to join her. A sound like that, after the battle they just had, wasn’t so easily conjured. It took strength to find joy after trauma, to stare death in the eye and laugh, not at it but in spite of it. And for someone like Izumi, with so much heartbreak and hurt in her history, to stand here and revel in it? It was impressive, as much as any display of alchemy or strength in battle. Olivier just stared and tried to resist a smile of her own. Each minute with her revealed a new layer, and she could hardly fight the urge to uncover her completely.
“I’m just saying,” Izumi said, “how else am I supposed to fight off all the military assholes who’ll try to wake you up with their paperwork and other useless bullshit?”
“I think you’d manage just fine without it.” Five seconds passed between them before the rest of her sentence clicked. “What would you still be doing here, anyway?”
Izumi scoffed. “I’m not just gonna leave you by yourself.”
“But I’ll be asleep.”
“Yes. And I’ll be here. Doing exactly what I was doing before you woke up earlier today.”
She should have left it alone, but whatever shame she’d had disappeared the moment she’d heard about the fainting incident, so there really was no point in trying to resist curiosity anymore. “Why?”
“Don’t tell me you’ve never stayed in someone’s hospital room before. As a general, I imagine it’s something you’re quite familiar with.”
“No, it’s not that — why me?”
Izumi stared at her, wearing an expression that managed to combine amusement with confusion. “You really don’t get it, do you? If I’m your people, then you’re mine. And I don’t leave my people alone when they’re hurt. Conscious or otherwise.”
She didn’t know how to explain it. The way it made her feel. Like the sun was shining from inside her, spreading its light through her veins until warmth was the only thing her body knew. She wasn’t one for humility, but she genuinely wondered what she’d done to deserve it, this kindness that felt entirely unearned. Whatever the reason, she decided then and there that she’d fight to hold onto it, no matter the cost.
“Very well.” The words came out softer than she intended. She forced herself to swallow the emotion back before she added, “But don’t avoid seeing the Elrics on my account. I imagine they’ll need you more than I will.”
Izumi waved her off. “Al will be in here for quite a while, I imagine. And Ed — well, I suspect he’ll be desperate for some time alone with his brother. The last thing they’ll want is my hovering.”
“You don’t hover,” she said without meaning to.
Izumi just smiled. She did that a lot, she’d noticed, and Olivier didn’t know how each one managed to convey something different. Amusement, joy, borderline impertinence, all finding their way into what should have been a simple expression. Maybe it was Izumi’s own kind of magic. Maybe they shared more than she thought.
“You know,” she said, “it’s okay to put yourself first once and a while.”
“Maybe next time,” Olivier lied.
Izumi shook her head as she looked back at the book in her lap. Part of her wanted to grab her attention again, to keep whatever this was going, but her eyes grew heavy again with sleep, and she could only hold it off for so long. She caved as she finally closed them. Silence slipped back in, broken only by the slight hum from the turning of pages.
Sleep, the restful kind, had evaded her for the past few months. Even before this war and its revelations, it had always been a luxury she couldn’t afford, a risk she refused to take. But now, accompanied by the quiet presence of the woman sitting next to her, it knocked at her door. And for the first time in as long as she could remember, she let it in, without fear or hesitation.

slow burn
pairing: ed/winry rating: k+? (i dont remember how this works) summary: a slow burn is fine, but winry wonders if he’ll ever catch on (post-promised day)
a/n: ha,,, hahaha im back. look i’ve been listening to a LOT of kacey musgraves in addition to my fmab rewatching hence... a lot of feelings. i’m quite rusty at this, but i’d appreciate any feedback! feel free to slide into my inbox, but as always, thanks for reading :) enjoy!~
Winry Rockbell was aflame, and completely puzzled.
Her life had never been particularly average, by any standard. But, she had managed to sand down and smooth out her life, as admittedly tumultuous as it has been, as much as possible. Always moving, constantly working, relentlessly good-natured. She carried her scars proudly but never allowed them to weigh her down. Her life was a vast web of hardship and trauma, though intertwined with tight bonds and fierce strength. She always managed to keep going.
Perhaps that was why it was so peculiar to her when she noticed a definite shift. Her life up to that point had been just so that things - bad things - usually occured in a raging storm, coming and destroying the constants in her life and transforming everything into a variable. She was used to a definitive, clear, breaking point, an event, a day; a war, a death; something to concretely signal that things would not be what they once were.
Thus, when she found herself considering Edward as more than her childhood friend, her feisty customer, her headstrong ally, it understandably took her a moment to process.
She regarded the brothers exiting the train platform in Central City, and as her locomotive chugged away, she couldn’t help but ponder when and how he had become... she didn’t even know how to shape it in her mind. He was never in her perphiary by any sense, but here he was taking center stage, carelessly flicking at embers beginning to burn in her heart. How long, she wondered, had this flame been growing?
She shrugged, slightly annoyed not at her new disposition, but at what to do next. As focal as he may have been, she decided, she could not (nor did she want to) devote all her time and energy to daydreaming and fantasizing. Moreover, as time passed, she came to understand how much of a liability she could be, when dangled as a hostage at Briggs. So she’d carry on, acutely aware of her feelings, but equally as cognizant of her budding priorities in Rush Valley. After all, she’d be no good if she sat at home fretting about his fate all day. Days were spent with brief interludes but him, about Al, about them, but she chose not to dwell. She decided she was alright. A slow burn was just fine. She’d store it in her pocket, letting the embers grow as time progressed. She’d let them strike when, and more importantly if the time was right.
When she encountered an admittedly taller Ed in Resembool just before the Promised Day, she’d been reminded of how deeply she cared for him. She’d lashed out, unapologetically, when confronted with the uncertainty of the day to come, and he’d bitten back, doing little to quell her anxiety. In the end, he rescinded his earlier words, and assured her that they’d be back. She swore on an apple pie that’d happen.
It was certainly hard to keep faith when she collapsed to the kitchen floor, her life force sinking beneath her and her soul being dragged beyond her reach, but when she’d regained consciousness after what had really been an hour but felt like some odd years, she knew they had done something right. The proof came two months later when she greeted her two boys, almost all flesh and wholly alive. She entangled them in her arms and was content to never again let go.
Amidst the genuine craziness of their homecoming, she’d been able to tame her heart well-enough. After all, she’d gotten more than her fair share of practice.
But soon enough, she felt the heat. She felt it when she’d catch Ed’s golden eyes on her. She’d acknowledge him quickly, offering him a quiet smirk before he darted away from her, face flushing. She felt it when, one night spent stargazing, she carefully rested her head into onto Ed’s shoulder as though it were the most normal thing in the world. He, of course, completely froze like a popsicle, but after 10 or so minutes, his posture loosened. She felt it when she casually entangled her hand with his on a walk to the market. Albeit, it was much more enjoyable once his hand stopped sweating profusely.
She especially felt it at Solstice Festival that June, when she’d ardently persuaded him into joined her in a dance. After a moment of sputtering (“W-Win, I can’t - I’ve got two left feet I - Oh, c’mon you know Granny and Al will give me hell...”) he’d tentatively placed one hand on her waist and the other in hers. To the gentle strumming of a guitar, she’d set her head gently against his chest where she’d heard his heart rate going in double time to the beat. As the music swelled and faded into crickets, she’d gingerly given him a kiss on his beet-red cheek.
This was how their summer progressed, small steps until they grew more and more normal, followed by another bound forward. Little, defining moments, like she was used to, encompassing one large shift. She was alright with the slow burn, but, geez for the prodigal, overly-confident, hell, even annoying Fullmetal Alchemist, she wondered when he’d catch on (if ever).
She got her answer with the arrival of fall. Carved pumpkins and warm cider marked the end of a summer’s harvest, and unmistakable new territory.
The moment the leaves began to fall from nearby trees, Al was unstoppable.
“Brother! Winry!” He exclaimed one particularly fruitful afternoon. “We have to go play outside!”
Winry smiled from her book; his joy was jubilant. How could she deny him this simple pleasure? “I’m in,” she grinned.
Ed snorted, “Isn’t it a little kiddish? Plus I just raked them all up.”
Winry and Al rolled their eyes, “Perfect for jumping in, then!” They countered. Ed moaned, but couldn’t help but loosen up once Al began frolicking happily among the seasons colors.
The three jumped about, tossing the foliage into the air and kicking piles at each other. It was Winry’s idea to begin a friendly game of tag, but knowing the Elrics, it did not remain light-hearted for long.
Al was “it” and pondering his choices carefully. Ed was panting about 35 yards to his right, Winry 10 yards closer to his left.
Al made a run for Winry, who immediately yelped and dashed towards Ed with a smirk. The elder brother hadn’t been paying quite enough attention; Winry darted behind Ed. nAl grasped the hem of Ed’s hoodie and breathlessly hollered, “You’re it, Brother!”
Ed fumed, “Damn it, Winry! I’m not your bait!” But the blonde was already spiriting away, blonde ponytail bobbing and unmistakable laughter chiming in the wind. She turned around to flash him a wicked smile that made this tongue go dry.
Without a second thought, Ed ran after her. He chased her around the yard in circles, completely missing his worn-out brother secede for a water break and head back inside.
For a moment they both stopped, about 20 yards apart. Both breathing heavy, Ed resting his arms on his legs. God, he was out of shape after a summer off. They caught their breath, both staring at each other intently. Ed could feel his heart practically thumping out of his chest, something he attributed to the intense game and less to the ever-intoxicating woman he was grasping at. He flashed her a look she couldn’t quite decipher before lunging after her.
Winry whipped around, laughing and trying to evade him. Winry ran in a zig-zag, trying to ward Ed off, but he had years of combat training on her. She shrieked as he closed the distance between them, closing his hand around her forearm.
In one fluid motion, he spun her around to face him,, stopping their forward motion and pressing her directly onto him. He became acutely aware of many things in one moment. Her sweet breath was sticky on his face, reminding him they were a hair’s length apart. His grip on her remained tight. Her blue eyes were wide with surprise, delight, and... was that anticipation? Her chest moved against his as they both struggled to normalize their respiratory systems, though he reminded, with Winry this close to him, there was little chance of that.
A summer flashed before him, a summer of stolen moments, chaste touches, nights spent together. Of course, she had taken the lead, him attempting to follow behind but continutely he allowed himself to be surprised by her. Their relationship, he remembered, was a long, drawn-out burn, but now more than ever, the distance seemed to be closing.
She spoke him out of his reverie, “Ed?” Her voice was patient, even beckoning.
Damn it all.
He pressed his lips into hers without a second thought. Pounding heart and swirling thoughts aside, all he could do was melt. She smiled against him, slipping free of his grasp and holding his face between her hands while his hands dropped to her hips, trying desperately to eliminate any remaining space between them. Tentatively, he moved his lips against hers trying to block his heartbeat in his eardrums. She responded positively, teasing him with her tongue and snaking her arms around his neck.
After an eternity that was somehow not long enough, they break, breath as uneven as when they began. Her eyes met his and she laughed at his flushed complexion. “Finally,” she breathed and he grimaced.
“S-sorry, I was just...” he stammered “I w-was. Look, I’ve never-”. She rolled her eyes, briefly kissing him once more and he forgot his momentary embarrassment, lost in the burn that is Winry Rockbell.
She relinquished, untangling herself and opting instead to slip her hand into his as she dragged him towards the house. He blinked a few times, following her blindly before she whipped around to offer him one more dazzling smile. “It’s okay,” she admitted, nuzzling her head into his neck. “I’m alright with a slow burn.”
“We’ve got time,” he concured. She hummed in agreement.
“And you’ve got a lot to learn,” she teased, letting go of him and sprinting toward the porch steps.
Ed frowned, completely miffed. “H-hey, what’s that supposed to mean! Win, come back here!”
It wouldn’t be the last time he tried to catch up with her, but at least now he was closer than ever.

The boys jerk to attention, and Alphonse gives his brother’s hand a tight squeeze. The elder Elric is holding it together, but Alphonse can sense the shaking that’s happening hidden away inside the grip of glove.
Edward’s face twists as he’s told the news and he tries to think of what could have happened. Does that mean the Lieutenant’s hurt? Was she out on mission or an errand for the Colonel? Well Hayate is what’s important right now and he needs to do what he can to help calm him down.
“Can you take me to him? Hayate knows me, he should settle a little bit for me.”
The man nods and leads the young alchemist back to where they’re keeping the poor thing, and honestly it hurts so much to see Hayate with that thing covering his mouth. He knows this dog and the only thing he’s deadly for is pounces and kisses. He just can’t imagine him being truly dangerous - despite knowing his station as a military animal.
“Hey buddy.” he sounds, crouching down in front of the kennel they’re keeping him in. “You know me. It’s Edward. I’m sorry I spooked you buddy. I’ll give you all the scratches you want when we can take you home, okay?”
But Hawkeye trained this dog and that means he probably could get some kind of information from him. Maybe... he almost wonders if he’s too spooked to response to much of his questions or commands. So he trades out the idea to slide two of his automail fingers through the bars and hook them into the dog’s furry and give him a good scratch along his collar.
“I’m sorry buddy. I’m gunna stay with you, but I gotta go tell Al what’s going on, okay? We gotta figure out what happened to the Lieutenant. i don’t want her freakin’ out when she can’t find ya. I’ll be right back, okay? Can you be good for me? I’ll let you pounce on me if you are okay? I know how much you love knocking me over.”
There a sad frown as he slides his fingers out of the cage before he stands.  Turning to the doctor his expression grows to that of an actual soldier, serious about his duty and what needs to be done.
“Do you have a phone I can use? Privately?”
It catches them a bit off guard but the doctor nods and leads him to his back office. If anyone would know what the hell was going on, it’s the Colonel. He keeps tabs on all his men, most of all Hawkeye and judging from the time if he dialed fast enough he should just catch him before he leaves for the night.
His fingers are turning the dial as fast as he can and it’s in moments  like these that he really hopes that some time in the future someone invents a phone with buttons because this is ridiculous.
Tumblr media
“Hello? Central Command?”
“This is State Alchemist Edward Elric, I need to speak with Colonel Roy Mustang.”
“Can I have your code please?”
“Stripe Apple Mouse two eight four.”
“I’ll connect you through, please hold.”
The phone came to life and there was a groan on the other side of the phone before anything was said. Of course he’d answer, if he recalls correctly he’s used this damn code of his only a handful of times and more often than not it was an emergency when he did.
“Colonel, before you yell at me, I need ta know where the Lieutenant was last. Al n’ I found Black Hayate messed up in an alley so we took him ta a vet n’ they got him patched up but he’s freakin’ out real bad n’ I can only keep him so calm. If you can get a hold of her can you tell her ta come ta the clinic on South Williams Street? Im gunna send Al back out ta look fer her but I gotta stay here cause Hayate gets real cross without me cause he doesn’t know anyone else.”
The words fell from his lips in one jumbled mess as he panicked and prayed he wasn’t about to get yelled at for this, but there was a knock at the door and the sound of his name. He grimaced for a moment.  “Um sorry Colonel. I gotta go... they’re callin’ fer me. Sorry! Bye!”
The receiver was back on the hook and the blond was back out the door in seconds, ready to see what the was matter.
