A couple of weeks ago I asked about people’s favorite book or books they read this year. Between Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and discord, I have a list of 123 books in no particular order that my friends and family loved this year. If it was a series then I listed the first book. Each star is an additional recommendation. I haven’t read all of these, they may or may not reflect my personal opinions, though my favorite books are on the list too. The most recommended books were How Far The Light Reaches by Sabrina Imbler, one or all of the Murderbot books by Martha Wells, and Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, because if there’s one thing my friends have in common across platforms, it’s that you’re all nerds (affectionate). Enjoy, and I hope you find your new favorite book!

The second factory where he built his cameras was located in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Semmendinger first made his cameras in New York City. Paul Getty Museum, gift in memory of Beaumont NewhallĪugust Semmendinger (1820 – August 6, 1885) was a manufacturer of photographic apparatuses and the inventor of the Excelsior Wet Plate Camera. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, Gift of Gloria and Stanley Fishfader This display explores the evolution of the camera through the Museum’s collection of historic cameras and photographs. Flexible film stocks, built-in light meters, motor drives, and megapixels are a few of the advancements that have transformed the way this ingenious device captures and preserves a moment in time. Once a simple wooden box with a primitive lens and cap for controlling light, the modern camera has undergone enormous change since its invention in the early nineteenth-century. Please click on the photographs for a larger version of the image. Paul Getty Museum for allowing me to publish the photographs in the posting. How does the physicality of the camera, from large format to iPhone, affect how we hold the machine, how we interact with it’s ontology and enact its rationale – in particular perspectives of abstraction, becoming, existence, reality, as well as the basic categories of being and their relations: Substance, Relation, Quantity and Quality Place, Time, Situation, Condition, Action, Passion? How have digital cameras altered how we use the camera and how we see the world, moving us from a viewfinder and vanishing point, to looking at a flat screen on the back of the camera? How does the camera impart its own reality, and how, through looking, do photographers understand how different cameras impart different realities? How do we intimately see what the camera sees, without looking through the machine? How can a box of metal and glass, a machine, capture onto film and pixels, something that so transcends time and space that, at its best, it preserves the spirit of our existence, the condition of our becoming? Although I love the design of the old cameras – when viewed from the outside, through the media images, the exhibition seems to also be a bit of a filler from the Getty. A filler posting from me as I am sick at the moment. © Estate of Lisette Model, courtesy Baudoin Lebon/KeitelmanĪpologies. What would the ROs sing at karaoke?
Anon, the amount that I enjoyed answering this question is absolutely criminal. Here you go dodo
Griff – Footloose by Kenny Loggins, although when he’s out with his sisters they always make him do Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice. He doesn’t need to look at the words for either.
Syd – I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor by Arctic Monkeys
Adegoke – Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder (and he’d kill it)
Ellis – Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood because that’s the sort of high drama shit that they love.
Nyra – Only Happy When It Rains by Garbage
Imogen – How Will I Know by Whitney Houston and everyone is surprised cause Imogen’s got pipes.
Arthur – Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand
Florrie – I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry or maybe Bye Bye Bye by *NSYNC. Florrie has a lot of fun with karaoke.
Vinh – It’s Raining Men by The Weather Girls and only ever as part of a group.
Avery – Murder On The Dancefloor by Sophie Ellis-Bextor because it’s hard to do it that badly and Avery is exactly posh enough.
Charlie – Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go by Wham and he’ll have a great time.
Atticus – has only ever performed karaoke when extremely drunk and when physically dragged up onto the stage with his mates. Usually ends up doing something like I Want It That Way by Backstreet Boys.
Rowan – Genie In A Bottle by Christina Aguilera

irks me that they name-dropped Jill Pole at the end of the movie, when she and Eustace weren't friends until later, and she didn't trust him at first when he tried to be nice to her
but I do like how they used the Pauline Baynes illustrations over the end credits - including showing that originally Edmund and Caspian were blond and Eustace was dark-haired (and the Baynes version of dragon Eustace is so pitiful, I just love him)
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader really is the least of the three movies; although it was one of my favourite books to read, mostly because of Eustace (SCAB REDEMPTION), its rather picaresque plot clearly made it difficult to adapt into a feature, there were odd decisions like changing Caspian's accent and Reepicheep's voice actor, it makes such a difference that Andrew Adamson didn't direct (and what an unusual CV that man has, with three Shreks and two Narnias - and nothing much since 2012, so I hope he's doing well) and the whole texture of the thing feels thinner and less rich, like a weaker broth for soup, while the Carrie Underwood song that closes the film is overly lush and loud and doesn't match the cool ethereal wispiness of the Imogen Heap and Regina Spektor songs that ended the first two. It just makes me happy to see Lucy, Edmund and Caspian again, and everyone looks nice in big blousy shirts with nipped-in belts.
