Thank you everyone for the love on my previous design! Sharing a portrait piece today I did all the way back in April for my cousin, Deepali, who requested a “bride portrait” in her mehendi. I wanted to try something a bit different so I took inspiration from @harins_mehndi’s fabulous work. If you know or follow Harin, his portraits are incredible! 😍 . . Doing henna for a bride is special no matter what but when the bride is a fellow henna artist, it makes it all that more special ♥️ @mudrahenna . . Nivi requested elephants and lotuses in her bridal henna. She wasn’t too particular about much but just wanted her a traditional look! I was nervous because I generally stay away from doing elephants & peacocks (I’ll be sitting in @bharathi_sanghani_mehndi’s s class during @henna_pro to learn that. Amirite, @hennaforallny?) Nivi also requested that her fiancé’s name, Anuj, be written in Tamil (as that’s her native language) and that her name, Niveda, be written in Gujarati (as that’s his native language) How sweet is that!? That one has to be one of my all-time favourite customizations! 🥰 . . I also had asked Nivi if she wanted symmetry in her bridal henna and she said “I don’t but deep down I know I do” Haha! I knew exactly what she meant. I told her we could keep the overall layout similar but we’ll change up the elements/fills to add a slight twist to it. I hope I did that request justice ;) . . Nivi made the whole process SO easy. She gave space for us to work and sat so still (so kindly apologizing every time she moved even a little even though it wasn’t an issue). Makeup brands utilize content marketing in a way that most companies would not be able to successfully execute. Do they independently produce their own content on their own social medias? Yes. Do they communicate with their consumers? Yes. Is it in a typically manner? No. They communicate with YouTubers that have a substantial amount of subscribers and followers by sending them PR packages. I know, I should not get PR and content marketing mixed up, but I see it as a powerful content marketing move. Aside from packages (of the latest products) these YouTubers are also invited to product launch parties, often times getting the trips paid for.

The demographics these YouTubers bring are young individuals and in the viewer’s eyes, there stars are like their (close) friends, people which they can rely on for product recommendations. So when a YouTuber features, uses, or even talk about a brand/product it usually sells out on the company’s website. This is something that has happened a significant amount of times.

Influencers in the makeup community are of all types of skin complexions, gay, straight, trans and gender non-confirming. So it is easy to find one which we, as  the viewer, can relate to. They also come from different background and from all over the world. 

Take 23 year old Nikkie De Jager, better known as NikkieTutorials. She is a straight female from from the Netherlands, he video style is very friendsly and has callaborted with multiple brands and celeberties (including Kim Kardashian).

Jeffrey Lynn Steininger, better known as Jeffree Star, a 31 year old male. He is a gender non-confirming individual from Orange County. His video style is very real and is not afraid to speak his own mind even if it means he will no longer receive PR packages. 

The review on youtube follow a similar layout. They will introduce the product, the cost, and color which they are using, as well as read what the product promises to do from using it.. Afterwards they test it out, and will follow up with rating it by saying the pros and cons of the product. All of videos, regardless of the YouTuber, follow the same video format, yet some are better than others. This has to do with the personality they portray, and the type of skin they have. You are more likely to take tips from someone with the same skin type as yourself. A major criterial is the video and audio quality of the video. By producing high quality videos, the viewers are able to get a better glimpse of how the product applied to the face and how the packaging actually looks like. This is something the makeup brands want, which is why they always gear towards sending out products to those with good lighting and HD video quality.

To showcase the popularity and celebrity-like status of these YouTube Beauty Gurus, they have (individually) done collaborations with brands and created their own eyeshadow palettes, brushes, and the whole shebang. These special collaborations typically result in sold out products within hours. Among the brands which they collaborate with are Benefit cosmetics. The package (pictures below) came about after Benefit asked select influencer about their holy grail product from the brand. The result is 5 travel size products. 

Aside from videos, these social media influences will also feature products on their Instagram.  They will tagging the brand, mention in the caption, or simply use a hashtag. The Instagram posts are always in high quality and get numerous likes, the best thing about the photos is how universal they are. It doesn't not matter the language as long as the brand is tagged, that way anyone will be able to “read” the post without language barriers.
