Matt Bellamy answers fan questions for the Australian Triple J magazine in 2007.
-------------
Mighty Pomgolian rockers Muse have some of muse’s most hardcore fans, so we let them call the shots. Frankly, we were afraid not to.
WORDS: Samantha Clode
“Salt Lake City tends to be one of those places where people go berserk,” says Matt Bellamy. “Maybe it’s all the salt plains surrounding them…” jmag finds the prodigious 29-year-old Muse frontman in the US, where he’s just finished up a stint with the tour physio. “I’ve got mild tennis elbow, I was playing squash and I think I stretched my arm or something,” he says. “But it’s nothing serious, I’m just sitting here with an ice pack on my elbow. Not too many Pete Townshend guitar swings tonight, I don’t think.”
With a second tour in 12 months heading our way in November, the trio from Devon are bringing their huge, prog rock stage spectacular down under following a stint on the 2007 Big Day Out. Rather than us throw a bunch of questions on Muse’s frontman, we asked you guys to tell us what you wanted to know…
Muse have some obsessive, dedicated fans. Where do you think the line is between being in the spotlight and having your privacy invaded? Bronwyn, 17, Bungendore, ACT
Everyone should be entitled to be at home, relaxing away from it all and not have people knocking on their door. I get a bit, yeah, and that's the place to draw the line. When we're out on the road we try to meet people and generally be friendly, but I'm glad that we're not super famous people where we're chased when we're going to the supermarket. I expect to be able to go there without having any hassles like that. I don't want to be caught buying toilet paper!
Have you seen Museslash? (Fan stories about the band, usually involving sex.) Becky, 15, Woodford, Vic
Museslash? No, I definitely want to check it out though, it sounds good, entertaining. I haven't heard of it until now, but I'll definitely be checking it out now, that sounds very interesting (laughs).
Who's your fave pianist of all time? Lachlan, 16, Ashfield, NSW
Firstly [Russian composer Sergei] Rachmaninoff. It's a close call between Franz Liszt [Hungarian romantic], Rachmaninoff and [Polish prodigy Frederic] Chopin. Some people argue that Liszt is up there, but Rachmaninoff has some kind of weird, dark edge to his music, which I don't think I've heard with any other kind of music before. So for that reason I give it to him - he's got a dark heard.
Do you think your friendship has helped you three guys deal with your success? Rachelle, 23, Brookvale, NSW
I wouldn't say success has been a problem, but I'd certainly say that issues come up with being away from home for eight months at a time. Especially Chris, who has kids and a family. But having a really close friendship helps us through tough times. I wouldn't define success as being a touch problem; I've enjoyed it very much. It's more the touring side.
So, any fisticuffs?
(Laughs) Yeah, well... I'm glad I don't try it because Chris would probably take my head off with one hit. We've had a few chairs thrown around and a lot of drum kits being smashed, I think me and Chris both attacked Dom and his drum kit a few times... but with friendly intentions!
If you're in Australia and you've only got $20, how are you going to spend it? Luke, 16, Devonport, Tas
You should be able to answer that question better than me, what do you recommend I do? Can you get, like, a bus journey to the outback for that much money? I'll pretend to be on the dole and get a rail ticket to the outback and go and live in the wild for a couple of years.
What was your first trip to Australia like? Marina, 25, Brunswick, Vic
It was brilliant. We loved all the sunshine, it blew us away. We're used to the grey, miserable depression of England, so being there was a breath of fresh air really. I remember getting freaked out by all these massive bats that were flying around our hotel. We were staying on the top floor in Sydney, and we were hanging out on the roof having a gathering with a couple of bottles of wine, and we noticed we were surrounded by massive bats. That's the first time I'd ever seen bats in my life - we all shat ourselves and ran away.
Is there any specific place you would want to be at the end of the world? Orri, 18. Reykjavik, Iceland
On a yacht, actually. It would be nice to be on the sea, away from all the chaos, just chilling out an relaxing. Depends... if the end of the world was a massive tsunami, then you definitely wouldn't want to be out on a boat, but if it was carnage and chaos and everyone was going mental, then I think it might be nice just to chill out on a boat. Go round the Maldives or Indonesia, cruise around, swim in the sea and pretend everything's find. You could probably live off fish for a while. Get one of those little water purification systems so you could just chill out and get away from it all...
You've said seeing an image of Hendrix setting his guitar on fire opened your mind to what music could be. What was it about that scene that turned you on? Anthony, 22, Bundamba, Qld
I suppose it was the chaos and the edge, the new idea that you can do whatever you want in your life and in your music. When I was that age, being in a rock band seemed like it was going to give me that opportunity, to be loose and pretty much do whatever I wanted, both on stage in music and in my life. I always loved music, but it wasn't until I saw that that I realised it could actually change your whole lifestyle.
I heard a rumour about the recording of 'Plug In Baby' [from 2001's Origin Of Symmetry]. involving mushrooms, nudity and a sauna. What's the story? Tim, 20, Riverview, NSW
(Laughs) Uh, yeah. It was in between recording takes. In England every now and again, certainly when it rains, loads of mushrooms grow. You take them to open your mind up to a broader dimension - you get to see the world from a different perspective. I'm sure you get them over there as well, but in England they grow in fields, you can find them anywhere. They often grow near cow shit, unfortunately. We found ourselves... not full naked, but definitely partially naked, in a bathtub rolling around. The mixture between that and doing the takes... I can't actually remember recording the songs to be honest, but I remember listening to it and saying, "Whoa, man, this is cool!" But a week later we listened to it and thought it was all a bit crap, so we had to spend a week fixing it up. But for writing and exploring new ideas, I'd recommend mushrooms. God put them there for us to use! It's nature's drug, you shouldn't make nature illegal.
Is it true Muse once supported the Spice Girls? What was that like? Lucy, 27, Blackburn, Vic
I've no idea where this came from! I think someone stuck it on the internet for a joke and everyone believed it; it's completely false. I've never played with them or met them. I wish I did - I would've loved to have supported them... ideally on the same bus as well.
How does it feel to be the biggest little man in music? Andrew, 21, Koolewong, NSW
(Laughs) It's quite good. With the guitar on stage you get to feel quite: "Hey man, I'm not too bad after all! I'm 5'7 but I can play some good riffs so it's all right. Everything's okay." (Can't stop laughing.)
Are you easy to work with? Jesse, 18, Gympie, Qld
(Ponders) Um... no, probably not, I'd say. I'm easy to work with people who know me, but with strangers I'm quite difficult. Just because there are ways I'm used to doing things: it's probably the disadvantage of being in a band for so long, you become very connected together and have certain ways of working. I've noticed that when you bring other people into the equation they can misinterpret the way you are as being very aggressive or very forward. But when you're working with your own bandmates you're used to dealing that way.
Do you crack the whip, then?
We all crack whips with each other, depending what it is. They all crack whips with me when I'm playing the piano too much! I generally crack the whip at them when they're playing cheap drum riffs. Between the three, somewhere we find a balance.
Is the Paul McCartney song 'Mr Bellamy' written about you? (It depicts a delusional 'Mr Bellamy' sitting on a roof and refusing to come down.) Marty, 26, Hawthorn, Vic
I don't think so! I'll check it out. I seriously doubt it's about me but... I'd be very surprised if it was, that would be a funny situation.
Is it true you're thinking of working with an orchestra next? Amelia, 22, North Perth, WA
If Dom and Chris let me! No, I definitely wanted to do the whole "we've blown it and become a total pop band" and I'm sure we'll do some more bits that are a bit more groovy and more dance. More up-tempo. There's definitely a few bits and pieces lying around that have been unfinished for so long that I just think we should lay them down. We certainly wouldn't do a whole album but definitely a couple of pieces that we might be able to release outside of an album might be interesting.
How did your father's band (the Tornadoes) influence you as a musician? Jervis, 18, Mornington, Vic
Dad introduced me to music when I was very young, and played me a lot of '50s and '60s records that I probably would never have heard of if it wasn't for him. I definitely got that more sci-fi... well, not sci-fi, but I guess what people like to call the more "spacey" sound from his band. The band he was in before the Tornadoes did this song called 'Telstar' - that song was the most well known. [The instrumental, named after a satellite, was the first British song to hit No.1 in the US.] For the '50s it did sound very futuristic, and very kind of spacey, so that element of the band definitely came from him.
Is it true you live in the house of former opera composer Vincenzo Bellini and you're trying to conjure up his ghost? Amanda, 23, Ferny Grove, Qld
I don't actually live there. The band were building a place where we could rehearse and live while we were rehearsing, and it's in the grounds of an Italian opera composer's house. I tried to get some of his vibes going because I listened to some of his music and I think it's brilliant stuff. It definitely feels like it's got some kind of musical ghost hanging around. If I was ever going to get a house and it was haunted, I'd want it to be haunted by a great composer, that's kind of ideal for me (laughs).
Do Muse fall into roles in the studio? Chris, 17, Glenelg, SA
Dom tends to take the role of the pedantic devil for the detail; he goes mental for absolutely every little detail. Chris is more the person who moderates the vibe and says, "Look, this isn't happening, take a break and wait for a day, wait for a few hours until it's going to happen." Dom would play the same song 20 times a day and get it wrong 20 times, whereas Chris would say, "Let's just take a break and come back." Dom would be all, "No, let's keep playing." I pretend to be behind the desk. I'm always drawn to being with the producer. I should be on the other side of the glass singing and playing, but I'm always behind the desk trying to control things - I always end up getting told to fuck off and get back in where I belong!
So are you into recording other artists?
Yeah, definitely. It's frustrating when we're making our own records, because I want to be involved in the production myself but I can't do it when I'm actually playing, you know? It's something I'd like to do when I'm older, too old to tour or something. So maybe in about 10 years when I'm slowing down a bit and I've got tennis elbow - tennis everything! - I'll start producing records instead.
What's one of your most memorable moments visiting Australia? Dom, 22, Preston, Vic
There's been loads. The Big Day Out is always loads of fun, I got to hang out with a lot of great bands there. This year was good: it's a bit of a blur, but I remember trashing someone's house. We had an amazing party in this really expensive flat in Melbourne. Some crazy guy decided he would let a few bands part there. By the end of it I remember seeing Mike [Skinner] from the Streets holding a couch in the air - he was surfing the couch while taking paint off the wall! I feel sorry for the guy whose house it was, but he certainly should have known what was going to happen when he invited us!
If there's a colour for sex, what would it be? Caitlyn, 15, Chirnside Park, Vic
(Pause) Well it's got to be red hasn't it, surely? Blue's a bit too boring.
It's pretty obvious from Black Holes And Revelations you're disillusioned by the current political climate. Does public apathy get you down? Or do you hold out hope for a revolution? Tegan, 17, Banara Point, NSW
I'd say I'm generally optimistic about people, but I'm pessimistic about society, and the way it's all been put together. But generally I'm very optimistic that people will pull through and come out shining at the other side. I think w're likely to see some heavy shit over the next 50 or 100 years, but if you look forward 100 years there's going to be a group of people having a laugh somewhere.
A couple of big bands have joined together lately - Audioslave, Velvet Revolver. If you had to start another band who would you have in it? Josh, 22, Waverton, NSW
Speaking of Audioslave, Tom Morello would certainly be the guitarist; Flea from Chili Peppers on the bass. Drums... who's brilliant? Maybe Jimmy Chamberlain, the guy who played for the Pumpkins. Singing would have to be Tom Waits, I'd say. I think that would be an interesting grouping.
Everyone is impressed by the XY synth pad on your guitar in 'Invincible' Do you do all the work on your guitars yourself? Dan, 19. Armidale, NSW
I've just always fancied something and gone, "I can't believe no one thought of that before." I had this effects unit I was using, the XY controller, and I thought, well, why don't I just stick it in the guitar? Luckily I've got a friend who makes guitars, so I said, "Can you stick this in the guitar for me?" and he worked on it for a while. It took us a couple of goes to get it right but it was quite decent. So it's just a case of imagining something and having a mate who can built it. So a lot is custom made, not personally by me but invented by me, if you like.
How difficult is it to use a jetpack? Kieran, 20, Waurn Ponds, Vic
(Laughs) I wouldn't know, because I've never used a jetpack. I think I saw one once, didn't Michael Jackson use one to get on stage? I've got something that's a bit like that, but it's not actually a get engine. It's a 50cc engine with a propeller attached. You just take a sort of parachute to jump off a hill, and you use the engine to push you higher and higher, It's not really a jet, though - "jet" makes it sound a bit more exciting!
Will you be using this device on stage?
The problem is it's very weather dependent, so it could go terribly wrong. It's 50/50 that I could hit the stage - there's a chance I could accidentally go in to the crowd and the propeller would probably mince up about 100 people! So maybe I'll save save that for when we're playing a super massive outdoor venue. "Everyone stand back!"
Lastly, jmag wants to know what's the question you'd most like to be asked?
You're going to ask me that now, aren't you? I'm trying to imaging someone coming in to an interview and just saying, "Ah, fuck it - do you fancy a pint?" If you ever meet me, instead of doing the interview just say that and we'll go down the pub, have a drink and have a much more relaxed time.
Well, next time, that's what we'll do.
Sounds good to me.

Exploring Stainless Steel Fabrication Finishes: A Comprehensive Guide By Ju Chen Welding Services
Have you ever thought about how a simple sheet of stainless steel is transformed into a functional component?
If so, thanks to stainless steel fabrication, where a combo of science and craftsmanship come together to create structures and objects.
Now, how about adding a pinch of glamour and making them not only sturdy but also aesthetically appealing?
Well, that’s the job of stainless steel fabrication finishes. These finishes aren’t only about being beautiful but also tough. It’s stylish and creative, too.
Are you wondering about the different types of stainless steel finishes? Then, keep scrolling.
This article will help you dive into stainless steel finishes, their types, and their benefits.
What’s Stainless Steel Fabrication?
Stainless steel is also called inox, rustless steel, and corrosion-resistant steel. These names are derived from the fact that it is resistant to rusting and corrosion. To obtain the desired properties, it contains chromium, nickel, and other elements.
Stainless steel fabrication is when you work with stainless steel to make things using it. This process involves cutting, shaping, and assembling stainless steel pieces to create various products and structures.
What’s the Stainless Steel Fabrication Finish?
Stainless steel fabrication finishes refers to the surface treatments or textures applied to the stainless steel products or components during the manufacturing or fabrication process.
You may think that these finishes are more about looks. But they aren’t about looks alone. They easily impact stainless steel’s functions.
As already mentioned, stainless steel has high corrosion resistance and is temperature-resistant. But these factors can be affected by finishes. They can affect things like how well it resists corrosion, how easy it is to keep clean, and how long it lasts.
Welding experts from welding and fabrication in Melbourne state that when choosing a finish for the stainless steel fabrication, it must be based on three things:
What the stainless steel will be used for
The design needs to match
Any specific functional requirements
What Are the Different Steel Fabrication Finishes?
Dull Finish
Why do you need a stainless steel finish? To make the metal shiny and fancy, right? But not every metal needs to be made that way. For instance, factories don’t need the metal finish to be attractive. Rather, they expect it to be strong.
A dull finish for stainless steel leaves it as it is without doing any special work to make it look smooth and shiny.
So, stainless steel undergoes hot rolling to get a specified thickness. This is followed by annealing, a heat treatment process to make the material get its desired mechanical properties. The final output is a rough, unrefined appearance, plain metal. You can find these finishes in applications such as air heaters, gas turbines, baffles, furnace parts, and annealing boxes.
Matte Finish
A matte finish in stainless steel fabrication can be compared to touching a piece of paper. When you touch it with your hands and leave a slight mark, you make it look a bit hazy.
It doesn’t look shiny, and you won’t find any strong reflections. Just a soft and gentle appearance. This finish is again dull or non-glossy.
How is this done? It’s by sanding or brushing the stainless steel, which creates a textured and partially rough surface.
Professional welders who provide welding and fabrication services in Melbourne say that this stainless steel fabrication is a popular choice for industrial, chemical, and food processing applications. In particular, it’s used for process vessels and tanks used in chemical and pharmaceutical processes, dry cleaning equipment, refrigeration units, etc. So, if a low-key, relaxed vibe that doesn’t look too flashy or sparkly is what you prefer, this is the finish.
Brush Finish
Anyone can easily spot a brush finish due to its patterned lines. To get a brush finish, a special brush or abrasive material is gently rubbed on the steel’s surface. This process leaves lines or marks that all go in the same direction, kind of like combing your hair neatly. The brushing begins with 50 or 80-grit abrasives and is finished with 100 or 120-grit abrasives.
This is how this finish produces a distinctive pattern of fine parallel lines across the surface. So, the brush finish is a cool way to give it a unique texture. When compared to the mirror finish, this one looks less shiny. It’s often used on things like appliances, fancy handles, decorative pieces, or railings to make them look stylish and a bit less flashy.
Brushed Finish
No, brush finish and brushed finish aren’t the same. Though they are also characterized by short, uni-directional, even parallel polishing lines, the effects are totally different. For instance, the finer abrasives are anywhere between 120 and 320 grit, which is double that of a brush finish in stainless steel. So, it means that the steel surface has visible lines or brush marks, giving it a distinctive look. You can also think of brushed stainless steel as metal with style.
This finish is common and popular among architects as it suits appliances such as elevators and escalators.
Polished Finish
As you have guessed from the name, the stainless steel fabrication has a polished finish. It comes with a reflective, mirror-like appearance and aesthetics. It’s like taking that steel and giving it a super-duper shine. You can even see your reflection in it, just like a mirror on the wall. The best part here is that the shiny finish isn’t just for looks. It’s also good at being smooth, and in fact, it has a smoother and more reflective surface than brushed finishes.
Welders from the top welding and fabrication companies in Melbourne often use polished stainless steel in fancy places, like high-end kitchens, beautiful buildings, or even cool cars. It’s all about adding that extra touch of class and making things look really nice.
Mirror Finish
If you can see yourself clearly, like when you get ready in the morning, it is called mirror finish. The welder will use a special process to make stainless steel fabrication super smooth and reflective.
The process includes treating the metal surface with a series of abrasives before polishing it a little extra for longer than other finishes. This finish has high corrosion resistance.
It’s unlike your average stainless steel, which might look dull. Instead, it’s so shiny you can see your reflection in it, just like a real mirror. This type of finish is highly preferred in applications that need bright, polished, and attractive surfaces. Some examples include high-end cookware, architectural elements, and automotive trim.
So, next time you see something that looks like a mirror but is made of metal, it will probably have a “mirror finish.”
Each of these finishes serves a different purpose, and the choice depends on what the stainless steel will be used for.
What Are the Perks of Stainless Steel Finishes?
Aesthetic appeal
Mirror finishes and brushed finishes are highly preferred for the aesthetic factor.
Highly polished and reflective stainless steel surfaces are ideal for architectural elements including handrails, sculptures, and interior decorative features.
Whereas, brushed finishes offer a matte finish. It’s suitable for applications like elevators, appliances, and architectural cladding.
Cleaning is made easy
When the stainless steel has a smooth, polished finish, it is easier to clean and maintain. For this reason, it’s suitable for applications in urban environments where pollution and contaminants are common.
Long lifespan
Stainless steel with finishes are durable and has a long lifespan. This factor is crucial in architectural applications where structures are expected to endure for many years without deteriorating.
Versatility
The best part is that these finishes can be customised to achieve the specific design requirements of a project. This versatility allows architects and designers to create unique and visually appealing structures.
Corrosion Resistance
Stainless steel is naturally resistant to corrosion, and it’s further enhanced by various finishes. This ensures that the elements, such as railings, cladding, and facades, maintain their appearance over time, even in harsh environmental conditions.
Hygienic Properties
In industries like food processing and pharmaceuticals, stainless steel fabrication finishes with a smooth, polished surface are essential. These finishes resist bacterial growth and are easy to clean, maintaining high levels of hygiene.
Closing Notes
Stainless steel fabrication finishes offer stainless steel fabricators numerous options to enhance both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of stainless steel products.
Understanding the various finishes available is essential to selecting the most suitable one for your specific application. But what truly makes stainless steel finishes interesting is their ability to quickly blend style with substance. Though some stainless finishes are chosen for their ability to resist corrosion and staining in harsh environments, others are selected to create a modern, sleek appearance.

dropping the reader in the middle of Coming Up Corn
(a mini Deck/KJ thing)
TW for degenerative illness, mentions of death
KJ’s room was perpetually cold. Deck woke up on the floor, shoulders sore as usual, opening his eyes to the blue sky reflecting on the cream-colored tile. He looked up towards KJ’s bed, not really expecting any movement, but hoping he was already awake. A blanket shifted slightly. Cosmo was curled up at the end of the bed, so it couldn’t have been him.
I have to stop doing this, Deck thought to himself, pushing himself up off the floor with aching arms, or at least get an air mattress or something. He approached KJ’s bed with caution, not wanting to wake Cosmo.
“Mornin,’ Ipswich,” Deck smiled as he pulled back the covers, revealing KJ in his off-white Ipswich sweatshirt that definitely must have fit him properly back when he was the badminton champion headed for Olympic stardom. Deck tried to be as gentle as he could as he woke KJ, but Cosmo decided he wasn’t gentle enough. The previously calm husky snapped at Deck, nearly grazing his forearm. Deck stumbled back, catching his balance as KJ flicked his wrist and motioned down.
“Sorry about that,” Deck sighed, cautiously stepping towards the bed, avoiding eye contact with Cosmo but wanting to keep an eye on him, just in case. “You want to go get breakfast with me?”
KJ shook his head, still laying flat on his back.
“I’m just going to run out and grab some bagels. You could wait in the car…”
KJ shook his head again, trying to prop himself up on his elbows, but failing, unable to lift his head from the pillow even when his arms were in position. Deck watched him for a moment, trying not to visibly frown. “Can I…”
KJ nodded, relaxing so Deck could prop him up against the headboard. The wood ridges felt like they were digging into his shoulder blades, but he didn’t mention it to Deck. He had done enough for him already.
“You’re real quiet today,” Deck sighed, running a hand nonchalantly through KJ’s hair, a surefire way to coax him into responding.
“It’s getting… hard.”
“I know,” Deck forced a smile, almost wincing at the weakness in KJ’s voice. “You’re going to get better, though, KJ. You’ve survived before, and you can do it again.”
“Don’t lie.”
“Those fuckers at Luunarc are going to pay for what they did to you and Theo,” Deck abruptly stopped running his hand through KJ’s hair, stepping away from the bed.
“And what… they did… to Matt?” KJ wheezed out, fighting himself to speak.
“Yeah, bud,” Deck smiled, “it’s crazy that you can think about anyone but yourself right now.”
“I don… I don’t have… a lot… of time.”
“Don’t say that.”
“It… it’s… true.”
Deck didn’t respond, attempting to change the subject. “Are you breathing alright? I think it’s about time we put you on oxygen.”
“Deck…”
“I’ll talk to Chuck about it later today, okay?”
KJ nodded, staying silent for a moment to catch his breath.
“Alright, well, I’m off to grab bagels. You’re going to sit in the kitchen with me when I get back,” Deck informed KJ, “and… is it okay if some of our friends join us for breakfast?”
KJ nodded again, hesitantly excited to see his friends for the first time in days.
“Be good,” Deck smiled as he walked towards the door.
Deck wasn’t going to get bagels. Not without going to the historical society first, at least. He hopped out of the car and slammed the door shut, hoping he was loud enough that Chuck and Bea could hear that they had a visitor. He had never been to the historical society without Theo leading the conversation, but his concerns this time were mostly about KJ, so he assumed he could handle it. He flung the front door open and dashed up the stairs, catching himself before stopping to knock on the door of Chuck and Bea’s office.
“Come in!”
Deck braced himself as he opened the door to see Bea at the front desk, her blonde hair braided with purple ribbons and stems of lavender. If they ever need a live-action Angel Cake... “Hi, Bea.”
“Hey, Decklan. Where are your buddies?” Bea asked, looking up from her laptop, but not physically getting up to greet Deck.
“Uh, it’s just me today. Is Chuck around?”
“Yeah; she’s in the back,” Bea answered, looking back down at her laptop after a moment.
Deck couldn’t tell if it was an invitation to find her or not. He stood, frozen, at the front of the office.
“Go on,” Bea laughed, “she’s free to talk to you.”
“Thanks,” Deck exhaled in something that was almost a laugh. He turned into the small hallway to the right of the door. Upon reaching the furthest room to the back, labeled ARCHIVISTS ONLY, he knocked. Rather than alerting Deck to come in, Chuck opened the door herself, after Deck heard a cacophony of clattering and shifting sounds.
“Mornin’, Deck!” Chuck greeted him, “Where’s your brother?”
“Couldn’t make it.”
“Ah, that’s too bad. Sit!” Chuck directed Deck to an ancient-looking brown leather office chair behind a just as ancient-looking and brown desk.
“I’m kind of glad he couldn’t come,” Deck added as he found a path through the boxes of old VHS tapes and papers that were more yellow than they were white.
“Why’s that?”
“It’s about KJ…”
“Oh, angel…” Chuck sighed, hopping up to sit on a wooden crate filled with who even knows what. “What about him?”
“I’ve been sleeping on the floor of his room every night…” Deck felt his chest start to tighten, “and… he gets worse every morning. He couldn’t sit up on his own this morning, and he’s gasping for air every two words…”
“You’re a great friend, Deck. We need more pals like you,” Chuck reassured him, “but about KJ… I’m not really sure if there’s much more we can do.”
“There has to be.”
“There’s a couple routes we could go down, I guess,” Chuck picked up a notebook off the windowsill and fished a pen from the pocket of her brown cargo pants. “But I really don’t think we’re going to get anywhere. I’m only a field medic and you’re just an empath. It would probably be best to just… let Mother Nature do her thing… as fucked up as it sounds.”
“Well… what are the other routes?”
“Beg Comstock for a cure, because I know that fucker has one, first off,” Chuck bit her lip as she scribbled furiously in the notebook, “if that evil motherfucker could come up with a seizure epi-pen with a gradual paralytic agent… he knows how to stop it.”
“Right,” Deck nodded, “exactly.”
“And Bea’s doing some research into the Corn Monsters,” Chuck continued, “I think we need to find a better name for them, but there’s a chance that they used to be used for medicinal purposes back when Waval was first founded, and before…”
“Oh god,” Deck shifted in the chair, tucking a strand of his honey-brown hair behind his ear, “I feel like I’m watching the History Channel at four in the morning.”
“Decklan,” Chuck sighed, “I think we should go talk to KJ and see what he thinks about pursuing either of these routes.”
“Alright,” Deck agreed, “but I’ve gotta go pick up bagels first. I promised KJ.”
“He‘a still eating just fine?”
“Yeah,” Deck nodded, “I don’t think his body wants to die. His brain, on the other hand…”
“We’ll talk to him. Go pick up your bagels.”
Deck came back to KJ’s house with Chuck and a bag of bagels.
“Hey, buddy,” Deck knelt down beside KJ’s bed, “we can eat our bagels now, and Chuck’s going to take a look at you after, if that’s okay. Just to make sure you’re all good… or at least as comfortable as you can be. Alright?”
KJ nodded hesitantly, not really wanting to be prodded and looked at. Cosmo sensed this, lifting his head from where he was once again curled up at the end of KJ’s bed.
“Let’s get you to the kitchen, if you’re all good with that,” Deck said softly, scooping KJ up into his arms. KJ held on, leaning against Deck’s shoulder and making small whimpering sounds with each step Deck took.
“Sorry, bud,” Deck sighed, “I know it hurts.”
“H… hurts…” KJ groaned softly as Deck plopped him down in a chair at the kitchen table. He quickly slumped over without any support. Deck shot a look at Chuck, who nodded intently.
“Can I help you sit up, bud?” Deck asked, not even waiting for a response from KJ before grabbing his shoulders and leaning him against the back of the chair. “Good,” Deck patted KJ’s head, “now stay still…”
Deck opened the paper bag and got out a plain bagel with cream cheese. He set it on a plate and cut it up into smaller pieces so KJ could feed himself. “Here ya go,” he set the plate down in front of KJ and reached into the bag to get out the bagels for himself and Chuck. Chuck watched KJ as he grabbed a piece clumsily, struggling to even get it into his mouth. It didn’t stop being a struggle once he did. He immediately started drooling as he chewed.
“Does that happen every time he eats?” Chuck asked Deck as he wiped off KJ’s chin with a washcloth that he kept on-hand in the kitchen.
“If he has to chew, yeah. Doesn’t really happen with stuff like soup.”
“Any other times?”
“If he’s talking a lot, sometimes.”
“Good to know,” Chuck noted.
They finished up their breakfast quickly and got KJ back to his bed as fast as they could. He was tired, and they needed to keep him going for a few simple tasks to assess his condition.
“KJ, can you try sitting up?” Chuck asked once KJ had been lying flat on his back for a few seconds. KJ nodded and struggled to prop himself up on his elbows. “Good,” Chuck sighed and smoothed KJ’s hair out of his eyes as he flopped back down onto the bed. “And… you’re still going to the bathroom alright by yourself? You can still take care of yourself? Brush your teeth? Shower?”
KJ looked up at Deck for an answer. “Uh, I usually have to help him a little if I’m here.”
“KJ… it looks like you need a bit more help than the last time I was here.”
KJ nodded and finally spoke up, “it’s… it’s getting… worse. Fast.”
“I know,” Chuck smoothed KJ’s hair again in an attempt to calm him down. “How are your dogs?”
“Good, I guess…” KJ turned his head towards Cosmo, who was sitting alert by the side of his bed. “Cosmo… stopped res… responding… to his… training. Recently.”
“Well, that’s not good,” Chuck scribbled something in her notebook. “Can we help?”
“I don’t know,” KJ said softly, “I think… I’m scared.”
“KJ, listen,” Chuck squatted down to KJ’s eye level, “we’re going to do all we can to fix this. You’re not alone. You never will be.”
“Can… can you guys… take care… of Cosmo… for me?”
“Yeah, buddy,” Chuck smiled, “if worst comes to worst, your dogs are in good hands.”
“It’s coming… to worst.”
Chuck shot a glance at Deck, who shrugged.
“We’re going to try to fix this, alright? I came up with a few routes we can go down, since… the medical care currently available to us isn’t seeming to do much. Do you want to hear them?”
KJ nodded, weakly patting Cosmo’s head as he curled up against his side.
“Alright. I was thinking we could basically beg Jon Comstock for a cure, or at least a way to stop it before it’s too late… or… we could try to contact the Corn Monsters and hope they can help.”
“I think… do it,” KJ struggled to get the words out. He stared up at Deck and Chuck with wide eyes, but there was a noticeable fleck of determination in them.
“We will, KJ,” Deck leaned over KJ, running a hand through his dark brown hair. “Don’t you worry.”

How would the tf2 mercs wrap gifts?
To anyone who still has trouble getting into the holiday spirit or calming down from the stress around holidays (like me), I present:
the mercenaries gift wrapping headcanons!
Scout
He's bad at wrapping, he gets his fingers tangled in tape, paper is crumpled in multiple places. It's done, it's finally done. Realizes that he left the price tag on. Tears away the paper again, removes the tag, slaps a bow on it. Throws it in a gift bag and calls it a day.
He's got a regular paper gift bag, he didn't have anything particular in mind when he went to pick it, but he found something that he personally liked and thought was nice to look at, one day will just buy a plain paper bag and decorate it himself.
Uses no ribbon.
Gift is accompanied by a really neat completely hand drawn card that he spent hours making and got everyone on the team to sign.
Soldier
Uses too much tape, somehow manages to wrap it. He often uses not enough paper which results in a bald spot where the paper is missing. He repairs it but the pattern is mismatched. There's so much tape wrapped around it that it'll be impossible to open for anyone. He's proud.
Steals borrows wrapping paper from Engie and Pyro, regular plastic duck tape, sometimes uses silver tape when he runs out.
Probably no ribbon. Slaps on one of those pre-made shiny bows if he's feeling fancy!
No name tags, just writes peoples names straight on the wrapping paper in his crooked handwriting. Slides little sweets and Christmas cookies along with gifts.
Sniper
He doesn't find particular enjoyment in the process, but he gets it done quickly and for the most part efficiently.
Uses brown Kraft paper. He likes things simple.
Uses no glue and ties natural twine 2 to 4 times around it to hold the paper in place, somehow it works out for him.
Sometimes he ties a little pine twig or other evergreen into the twine bow which adds a really homey touch to his gifts. Doesn't use name tags, he just hands the gift over to the person directly and watches them open it. Doesn't usually do cards but when he does it's always something wacky he found in a souvenir store while travelling and found it funny, so he had to get it and now you have to see it too.
Engineer
Has extremely precise measurement and folds. Never wastes wrapping paper. Never has a single crook or imperfection on the finished gift, looks like a machine did it. He sometimes plays around with elaborate ways to wrap gifts, like wrapping diagonally, combining multiple wrapping papers together etc. Always puts items in a box before wrapping them. Uses paper cutter, never scissors. This man is a gift wrapping god.
Classic wrapping paper with geometric and cheesy holiday patterns of no more than 3 colors. Either uses glue or some sort of advanced origami magic because his wrapping holds together perfectly, and there's never any tape.
Uses classic fabric ribbon to finish off everything. Plays around with the placement, tying it around the corners, diagonally, etc. Gets help with tying the bows from Demo.
Ponders adding name tags because he doesn't want to break the visual composition of his master work. Will hand you your gift with a mug of hot cocoa with cream and a big smile.
Demoman
Demo always wraps gifts straight on without any box, even if it's things like clothes or odd shaped items. He somehow manages to wrap them well on a first try!
Wrapping paper with pressed pattern texture, very pretty and fun to run your hands over. Nobody knows where he got it from, and he seems to have an unlimited supply of it. Uses washi tape and wraps it around the gift as a finishing touch instead of ribbon.
Rarely uses ribbon, but when he does, he hand-ties the pettiest bows.
Expect cutesy colorful name tags. If he gave you a Christmas sweater he's not going to leave you alone until you wear it. Will give long warm hugs that smell like Christmas spices and a hint of eggnog.
Medic
Puts item in a small box then puts that box inside a box then puts it all inside a bigger box, then wraps. Masterful folds and clean cut edges, similar to Engie. Doesn't go crazy inventive with the ways of wrapping, sticks to the simple folding patterns. Indulgent scissor glider.
His wrapping paper has simplistic geometric patterns of 2 colors. He uses that really nice matte scotch tape and places it tastefully without using too much of it
Uses excessive lengths of that shiny thin curly ribbon, plain name tags.
Don't mind the occasional little splatters of blood and bird feathers that might make their way onto the wrapped gifts, he really tries. Sings holiday carols loudly and encourages everyone to join.
Heavy
As of wrapping, he manages. I's not as neatly done as Engie or Medic, but he manages to make it look well-thought-out. Clean folds. Uses paper tape.
Uses dense tissue paper in earthy tones. Occasionally borrows wrapping paper from Medic.
No ribbon.
Gifts have little heartfelt written notes in them. Gifts smell nice, like old wood, herbal tea and beeswax. Heavy gives tasteful minimalist typography cards to everyone. Will talk about his favourite holiday themed literature & plays to whoever shows interest.
Pyro
Uses too much paper so theres a lot of wobbly folds around the wrapping. Wraps gifts boxless. Wraps multiple small gifts individually, they get scattered everywhere, decides to put them in a small bag and adds some colorful shredded filler to top it off. Loves scissor gliding but does it very clumsily.
Wrapping paper with crazy and cluttered patterns on it, with childish motives like cartoons and animals, colorful, will bring a smile to your face just by looking at it
Gets tangled in ribbon and usually decides not to add it. Decorates name tags with stickers!
Gifts are accompanied by small handmade candle holders (decorated with macaroni art, pompoms, glitter!). Gifts are confetti bombs and card may or may not be a glitter bomb, also hand drawn!!
Spy
It's not that he doesn't care, he's a perfectionist and wants things done right, handled by the right people. So he usually pays someone at the store to wrap his gifts for him. Will come to Engie for help if he's running out of time/options, but he'll bring his own paper, and he'll have annoying questions and prompts the entire time. He just wants it to be perfect he's stress on two legs ok.
Solid color wrapping paper that somehow feels expensive, really sturdy and nice to the touch, sometimes with minimal patterns like gold flakes.
Fancy singular ornament placed on top (think pre-tied fancy bow with excess stuff, like charms attached to it).
His gifts smell nice, like an expensive cologne and exotic spices. Doesn't give cards but accompanies his gifts with a very warm speech wishing you a happy holiday and shares long meaningful eye contact.
// I really wanted to request this prompt on a writing blog but I just couldn't decide which one, and I already had so many ideas so I just decided to write some myself. Feel free to add your own stuff/do your own takes on this, I would love to see them!
I wish you all wonderful holidays!

10 Ways To Decorate Your Rented Flat To Make It Feel More Like Home
Rented homes can always come with goods and features that do not belong to us, our likes and dislikes, which can be deceptive if you stay in the house for a long time. It is important that the space you live in feels comfortable and modest, and fortunately, there are various things you can do to renovate the space and make the house feel like yours. Here is a write down of ten things you can do to make sure your rented home feels like your home.
Tumblr media
Combine your drawings with your print
Rented rental buildings often come with unsightly pictures already hanging on the walls. You can take down the art that comes with the house, hide it behind a cupboard or under stairs, and hang your favorite pieces. If you are planning to buy a brand new art, try Etsy with beautiful drawings and beautiful and unique posters - most of which are less expensive. You can also find many free wall art. Help stores are ready to get high-quality photo frames at affordable prices (just remember to take your photo ratings and measurement tape with you to make sure they fit right!) The hookers say they don’t leave a mark when it’s time to move on, which means you’ll be back with the full amount! To fail, you can attach your hooks to the walls and then fill them with Polyfilla and paint over them at the end of the rental. This can be a little dangerous if the wall is painted in any other color except white; it will be difficult to match the paint (top tip: be sure to match the finish of the paint, e.g., matte or satin).
Get a new shower head and shower curtain.
Many rented buildings have small shower heads with no adjustment to do the pressure to do a bigger job than something to rest on. You can change the shower head on your rented area easily. Another great way to renovate your rented bathroom is to install another blank shower curtain, something that suits your liking. H&M and Ikea have excellent materials with beautiful paper and patterns that will brighten the room.
Buy new plants or flowers.
Beautiful green house plants are a great way to add some color to your rental home, and they look great on fireplaces, shelves, and window sills. Plants can bring life to any room in the house- why not try your favorite herbs in the kitchen, following the ivy on clothing and other drinks in the bathroom? You will save money by growing your own fresh herbs instead of buying them at the store. You can personalize your space even further by choosing certain plant pots and hangers to sit on; this can be clay with clay to match the existing color scheme or add texture to space with some raffia or wicker jars. Fresh flowers are also a great way to add some color to a room; flowers can be expensive but find new ones at the local market for lower prices, or simply display some daffodils usually costing one pound and last for almost a week.
Use soft materials to create a color scheme.
Cushions, throws, and rugs help make the space feel organized and are a great way to make your favorite color scheme into a rented home. Using a variety of molded fabrics will surely bring charm to every room; you can try velvet cushions and deep rug rugs to make space live like yours. If your item is already delivered, it may come with certain sets as well, which may not be your preference. You can lower these curtains and keep them in a closet and place them in something more in line with the color scheme you created.
Ask the householder if you would like to make a permanent change in your life
If you desire to make a permanent change to your rental land, ask the landlord to see if they would like to let you paint the walls or permanently add a shelf. Examine your lease contract to see if there are any suggestions that the landlord may open up to an employer who is making some changes to the decoration. More often than not, they’ll be happy to let you upgrade the property, as long as the change doesn’t put other employers in the future. They may want to comply with certain basic rules - perhaps the paint color and the rules that ensure that no furniture or carpet is damaged during the decoration. Many homeowners would be happy to keep good tenants for many years and come up with some interesting decorations to make them feel at home.
Upcycle circuit furniture
Showing off your craft with your rent will make the property feel like home. There is something very beneficial about re-painting the furniture and making it your own; high-quality handmade furniture can be found in bulk in aid stores, local free programs, and hardware. You can transform a bedside table or chest of drawers with some paint and new drawer buttons, giving it a new life and a new home.
Post photos and personal reminders
Nothing feels more like home than finding your souvenirs and photos on the shelves. If your equipment does not come with shelves, you can always invest in a free stand shelf that you can draw with you when your rental is over. Put your holiday reminders, trinkets, books, and photos of your loved ones on display, and you can be sure that space will soon start to feel like yours.
Use tile choices in the bathroom and kitchen.
Just one look at Pinterest will tell you that patterned tiles are very popular right now; they can turn a room into something that will never look out of place in Spain. The problem is that, for tenants, changing your tiles is a home improvement that will not just fly with the landlord - not to mention an expensive renovation. However, pattern tile choices are now widely available online and are a great way to renovate plain tiles in your bathroom or kitchen. Tile Stickers are usually made of vinyl and are very easy to use, and are easy to remove without the leftover residue, which means you can have the bathroom of your dreams without breaking the bank OR your lease contract.
Use new storage solutions.
Storage can be deceptive in rented homes; if your home is already furnished, this usually includes a small empty in terms of storage items such as a wardrobe and drawer chest. If you are renting a small apartment in the city, you will have to find a little art if you have a little space and a lot of things to put on. Underneath the bed storage in the boxes out of the amazing storage space, you’ll be amazed at how much you can apt under the bed! This will help you to feel more at home, as you will still be able to hold on to what you have without your home being overcrowded and chaotic. Baskets are woven and are a great way to store items in every room, from toilet trucks to bedding. You can find inspiration to weave a basket everywhere online; it is a budget-friendly storage solution that looks expensive and trendy.
Create an ambiance with lights and candles
Proper lighting can instantly turn a house into a home; you can add lights to bedrooms and living areas to create a soft atmosphere instead of using overhead lighting. Choosing your own table lamps and standing lamps is a great way to introduce your extra flavor to a rented house. Candles are another inexpensive way to change a room's atmosphere, placing a few candles on a coffee table and a cover to create packets of warm light and refreshing air. You can intensify the candles' light by placing them on top of the mirrored area, such as the display shown.

Your fingers wrapped around the car key in the ignition, slowly turning it and killing the engine. Leaning forwards, you took a closer look at the outside of the tattoo shop you arrived at. It looked clean and modern, white letters in a sharp font spelled out the shop name on the glass.
'HERO|INK'
Quirking a brow you couldn't tell if the owners were being clever and using a play on words for 'heroic' or if 'hero ink' was what they were going for. Either way, you shrugged your shoulders and figured it'd be a good topic for small talk during your tattoo session.
Before exiting your vehicle, your eyes scanned the road you were parked on to make sure no cars were coming. Seeing that it was safe, you wrapped your scarf tightly around your neck, nuzzled into your coat and opened the door, taking off into the freezing cold air. The chilly wind and fleeting snow made your eyes screw shut and bones rattle as you ran to the door of the shop.
Once inside you leaned back against the door, underneath it’s ringing bell that signaled your arrival and took a breath from the brief jog. The temperature inside the shop was extremely warm and cozy, making you hum while shaking off the snow flakes from your hair.
Looking around you were in awe at how well designed and laid out the shop was. You've been in plenty of tattoo shops with your past friends and lover, none of them were even close to how nice this place was. It was pristine, sharp and sleek. Art work was framed and hung from the walls, along with traditional Japanese oni masks. The floors were wood and shiny, the front counter was matte black. The tattoo stations were no where in sight, leading you to believe that they were in the back away from the public.
While looking around and unwrapping your scarf, quick footsteps could be heard from a walkway behind the counter. You looked and smiled when a black-haired male popped up, he gave you a triangular smile in return. He wore a black beanie and had his ears gauged. Black ink in a geometric design with a lotus covered his throat and went further down under the collar of his raglan shirt. Both of his arms were sleeved out, they seemed to have the same theme of geometric patterns along with bold sharp flowers. Looking further you noticed just how massive his elbows were, they were really awkward looking and unconsciously you made a not so cute face.
A warm chuckle made your eyes tear away from the mans elbows and you blushed with embarrassment.
"I – I'm so sorry for staring."
"Nah, it's normal I have weird elbows. It's just because of my quirk," he smiled.
Before you could ask what his quirk was, he bent one of his elbows and aimed it at you. Suddenly a ribbon of white shot out from it and wrapped around your waist. You gasped when the material retracted and pulled you closer to the front counter that he stood behind. You couldn't help but laugh from the demonstration and clapped when he released you and bowed.
"It's tape, comes in handy for a few things I guess. I'm Sero by the way."
You nodded and took the hand he held out for you to shake, "It looks practical, I'm (Y/N)."
Sero raised his eyebrows and went to the computer monitor at the end of the counter. He smiled and snapped his fingers before looking at you.
"You're here for an appointment,"  he replied and looked at the clock on the wall only to chuckle, "You're five minutes early, we usually never have customers arrive early."
"Yeah, I've never been late for anything in my life honestly, it's just a pet peeve of mine."
Sero breathed out a warm laugh and walked out from behind the counter, his arm motioning you over to a high table that sat against a wall. He pulled out the stool for you and couldn't help but offer his hand when he noticed that the seat was a little too high off the ground.
"Sorry, we usually have massive guys come in here. Rarely do we ever have many females."
You smiled and mentioned it wasn't a problem and thanked him for his help.
Sero took a seat next to you on the opposite stool after he grabbed a sketch pad and pencil from the counter. The two of you went over the idea you had in mind for your tattoo. As you explained the image, Sero's hand worked at sketching up a general idea of it. What you described was very minimalistic.
A plain ocean wave, curling in on itself, no shading involved just line work. You also added lyrics that curved around the wave perfectly. Once Sero finished he looked it over and smirked.
"It's simple and really easy, but I can tell you have a reason for this just from the lyrics. It's always nice to have someone come in wanting a piece that holds sentimental value behind it. It makes what we do that much more important."
You smiled and nodded but didn't care to elaborate any further on your meaning.
Sero nodded himself, quickly figuring out that you didn't want the topic to go any further, to which he was perfectly fine with. He briefly excused himself for a moment and disappeared back behind the counter. You waited silently and watched the busy street outside until Sero came back in a short amount of time and rubbed his hands together as he approached you.
"Alright, where are you wanting to put this?"
You blushed slightly and lifted your arm, placing your hand on the patch of skin on your ribs that started behind the cup of your bra.
"Here."
Sero raised a brow and nodded, "Okay, that's perfectly fine. You are prepared to remove your shirt and bra for it right? Also, your placement choice may be just a tad bit more painful than other spots."
Nodding, you lowered your arm. "I'm fine with all of that. Pain is of no issue, I have a healing quirk."
Sero chuckled and crossed his hands behind his head, "Well shit then, this should be a piece of cake for you! Your artist is finishing up on one of our guys right now, so we'll go ahead and get your paperwork done."
Quickly, he went to the computer behind the desk and printed up a few forms and jogged back over to you and placed them on the table with a pen. Clearing his throat he rubbed the side of his neck.
"You are older than 18 right? It's just something we have to ask."
You giggled, which seemed to reassure Sero, "Yeah, I'm 22 actually. I know, I don't really look it."
Sero agreed and went over the paperwork with you, it was just simple stuff such as you agreeing and consenting to the tattoo, accepting that a tattoo is indeed like an open wound and is susceptible to infections if not taken care of. The paper also asked that you inform them of any allergies to latex, ink, and other things that would come into contact with your skin. After filling out your paperwork, Sero gathered it and placed it in a file behind the counter and motioned you over behind it and to follow him down a hall.
There were three doors all on the same side, two were closed and one was open, the sounds of buzzing and low-volume music could be heard the closer you got.
"Hey Kiri, Denks, this is (Y/N)," Sero said as you both hung around the door frame.
You peeked in to see a yellow-haired male, he was shirtless and random tattoos littered his skin as he laid out on a tattoo chair with an arm wrapped around the back of it. One of his nipples were pierced and a ring with a lightning bolt charm hung from it. His golden eyes flickered up to you and they sparkled when he smiled wide and shifted in his chair.
"Goddammit Denki, stay still, I do have a needle to your skin!"
Tumblr media
A raspy voice caught your attention and made you look to the male who was hunched over with his back to you, tattooing Denki.
He wore a black muscle shirt; the sides ripped open all the way down to his waist and showcasing the hard-muscled body beneath the fabric. Both of his arms were covered in traditional Japanese tattoos and a thick black headband had his bright red spiky locks held back, not that they looked like they were going anywhere from how hard and sharp they were.
"Sorry, you know how excited I get when there's a pretty girl around," Denki teased and winked at you.
You couldn't help but blush and smile, only boosting the males ego even more.
Sero moved to stand by Denki and shook his head at the tattoo being placed on his rib cage. "Denki, I really don't understand you sometimes man."
You walked over to look for yourself and covered your mouth trying to hide a chuckle. For some reason this man was getting a tattoo of a hand making an upside down 'ok' symbol.
The red-head glanced at you from the side, deep red eyes looking at you for the first time and quirked a dark brow. You looked back with a smile only to have one of his eyes narrow before he went back to tattooing. You frowned and nervously rubbed your neck.
"Maybe he's just in the zone," you thought.
"So, to what do we owe the pleasure of having such an angelic face enter our shop," Denki asked, batting his exceptionally long lashes at you.
"You mean our shop," Sero corrected and flicked the golden boys forehead as he motioned from himself and Kiri.
He whined and stuck out a pierced tongue making you lightly chuckle and cross your arms while watching the red-head tattoo.
"Well obviously I'm getting a tattoo."
Sero snorted at your straight-forward answer and patted Denki's shoulder.
"Yeah, a tattoo that she's paying for, so hurry it up Red."
Kiri waved off his friend and mumbled incoherently as Sero walked out after giving your shoulder a squeeze and flashing you a reassuring smile. You smiled back and thanked him while removing your coat and sat down in one of the free chairs as you waited for your artist to finish.
You jumped when you caught Denki staring at you all starry eyed. Your brows knitted, a nervous chuckle rolling off your lips.
"You got a man cuteness?"
Kiri's eyes flashed from his task and to you for a brief second before looking back down and smirking. You suppressed the shiver that threatened to run down your spine from the look his piercing red eyes gave. Shaking it off you looked at Denki and shook your head.
"Uh – no. I just recently moved here actually, so I don't know anyone."
Denki excitedly shifted in his seat, digging something out of his pants and making the red-head growl at him. Suddenly, a phone was tossed your way, fortunately you had quick reflexes and caught the device, giving the yellow-haired man a look.
"You can know me, put your number in there, we should totally go out sometime, I'll make sure you have fun!"
You looked at the phone in your hands and hesitated from being put on the spot so quickly. "Uhh, I don't –"
"Just do it so he'll shut up and I can finish this," Kiri demanded with an annoyed voice.
Denki glared at his friend and pushed his shoulder with his palm, "Hey man what's up your ass!"
"Nothing, I just hate wasting time. I have other things I need to do after all of this shit."
You rolled your eyes, already getting sick of the sour attitude this guy was having so far. Without wasting anymore time you unlocked Denki's phone and went straight to entering your contact information.
He seemed pretty harmless and actually funny, so what would it hurt to make a new friend. Getting up from your seat, you walked over and handed the phone back to Denki with a smile.
Once turned around and walking back to your seat, both of the men stole quick glances before you turned back around to sit. Kiri cleared his throat when your (e/c) eyes looked at him and your tongue briefly wet your lips. You bit on the end of it as you quirked a brow at him. He raised his own eyebrow and subtly shook his head, going back to the tattoo.
Denki went to typing away on his phone, seconds later your own phone went off and you fished it out from your bag on the floor.
You opened it to a text from an unknown number that read, 'Just making sure you didn't give me a bogus number' .
Looking up at Denki, who was once again smiling at you made you quietly giggle. After saving his information you spent the next ten minutes browsing random apps to make the time go by. When the buzzing of the tattoo machine finally stopped you looked up to see Kiri place it on the tray next to him and sigh.
He wiped the ink clean with some tattoo soap and a napkin then nudged Denki's leg as if to say he was finished. Denki smiled and hopped off the chair and walked over to the mirror to check out his comical piece of ink. He turned to you and raised a brow. You were able to fully take in his other tattoos which were all literally random and had no cohesive theme to them. It was a mess really.
"What do you think cutie?"
You smiled and chuckled, brushing back a lock of hair. Unaware of the red eyes watching the small movement with interest.
"I have a feeling it really suits you."
Kiri yawned in the background and leaned his head to the side, cracking the bones in it and sighing. He stood from his stool and stretched his arms above his head, your eyes widened as you realized just how massive this guy was. There wasn't a single ounce of fat on him, everything was hard tattooed muscle. You swallowed harshly, admitting to yourself that he was definitely attractive, almost too attractive!
"So, virgin skin huh?"
Your eyes blinked and looked over to see Denki crouched down next to you, it made you jump a little and he chuckled.
"Excuse me," you asked with a smirk.
"I don't see any sort of marks on you, no other tattoos, not even any scars. Even people who live somewhat normal lives have some sort of scars, what are you like some princess that was sheltered from the world?"
Kiri shook his head and tossed an empty ink cup at Denki, "Why can't you mind your own business man."
You shook your head at both men and assured them it was okay.
"Uh – first off, no I'm not a princess. I've had my fair share of scrapes and scratches, but they don't last long because I have a healing quirk. It's not much but –"
"Shit really? So you could heal my tattoo like right now and I wouldn't have to wait two weeks to go swimming?"
You laughed and placed a hand on Denki's cheek, Kiri looked at you with a raised brow and narrowed his eyes, something foreign and totally fucking stupid bubbling up inside of him at the scene before him. Denki however was over the moon and grabbed your hand.
"You do know it's like freezing balls outside right, you can't go swimming!"
"Of course I can cutie, there are such a thing as indoor pools, hot springs!"
"Ah," you remembered and shook your head, "you have a point I guess. But yeah, I could heal you, its small enough."
Denki stood up eagerly and pulled up his shirt, giving you the side of him with the fresh tattoo. He kindly and desperately pleaded to see your quirk in action. It made you laugh, he was too cute for his own good.
With a smile, you placed a hand on his skin. Denki flinched slightly from the feel of your cold fingertips, you apologized softly, earning a bright smile from him.
Closing your eyes you took a deep breath and cleared your mind, a small buzzing at the back of your skull thrumming as your quirk activated. A dim glow illuminated under your hand quickly before disappearing.
Kiri watched on closely as he set up fresh tools, his machine and ink for your tattoo. When you pulled your hand away Denki looked down and felt at the patch of skin. It was no longer warm and raised, it felt as if the tattoo had been healed for months.
"Damn sweetheart, you know you'd come in handy around here," Denki complimented with a devious look in his friends direction.
Kiri glared at the golden boy as if he had said something out of line. Denki cleared his throat and lowered his shirt back down but you smiled at him and he instantly perked back up.
"Well, I should be heading off and letting you get to it Red, thanks again. I'll be back later tonight," Denki walked over and gave his friend a half-hug and grabbed his coat from a hook on the wall.
He sauntered over to you, taking your hand in his and bringing it to his lips to place a kiss to it. You couldn't help but laugh at how unashamed he was, you were really starting to like this guy.
"It was such a pleasure to meet you gorgeous, this definitely won't be our last time seeing each other. I'll hit you up later, maybe we can go for a bite to eat sometime."
You nodded and waved as Denki made his way out of the room.
The moment he was gone the atmosphere suddenly lost all of it's lightheartedness and you were now alone with the not so charming red-head.
You looked to see him standing at the small desk that sat in a corner of the room, the sound of a printer could be heard and his muscular fingers took the sheet that exited from the machine. His free hand scratched at the back of his neck, body turning around and walking back to the tattoo chair to place the sheet on the leather of it.
He smirked and looked at you finally where you stood there almost glaring at each other.
"Alright little one, strip."

Chapter V - 505
Her morning routine had been stiff, to say the least. It had taken her a while to get out of bed and dressed, because she wasn’t sure she even had the courage to present herself in front of the people who she’d had been nothing but trouble to. But when she arrived at the breakfast table, greeted by the soft yet tired smiles of Nick, Jamie, Matt and Miles she thought she’d seen the worst of it.
How wrong she turned out to be.
She took a deep breath after thanking Jamie for her serving of food. “I just wanted to apologize to you all,” she started. They all looked up from their plates and newspapers to give her a look of befuddlement. “I’ve been nothing but trouble to you and the hotel. I see now that it was wrong of me to make the presumption I could write something about it without your full permission and thus I’ve been nothing but selfish. I hope one day you’ll tell me what really happened, and it wouldn’t have to be for a novel. Until then, though, I think it’s best if I finish breakfast and take the next train home.”
“What?!” Nick blurted out; his mouth full of eggs. “You can’t just leave!”
“It’s quite alright. I don’t want to intrude on your privacy anymore than I already have.”
“Miss, you’ve been nothing but a wonderful friend to us,” Jamie intervened, “A curious and at times a bit of a meddling friend, true, but one who I hold nothing but respect for. Because I know you do it out of the good of your heart.”
“Jamie, you’ve known me for less than three days.”
Miles spoke up, “You are a bit of an open book, miss. I’d have to agree with Jamie here, I don’t sense any ill intent from you. Such a pretty visitor.” He winked and she playfully hit his arm in turn.
“You’re all too sweet. But you know I can’t stay. I’m not just doing this for myself.”
“You shouldn’t have to leave because of someone else’s personal issues,” Matt stated plainly.
The conversation quieted down when another figure stumbled into the breakfast hall, clearly looking hungover out of his mind. He’d still managed to wear a suit, but she presumed he’d added the sunglasses to cancel out the bright light and hide the bags under his eyes. He sank into his chair and waved his hand when Jamie tried to plate him some eggs.
It was silent for a while.
Finally, he lifted his shades and his eyes swept over her, almost indifferently. “What are you still doing here?” he asked with a blank undertone that no longer seemed to surprise her.
“She’s our guest, Alex. I don’t see why you have to be such a prick about it.”
“I don’t wish to argue with you about this matter now, Matthew-“
“There is no argument, Alex. She stays,” Matt repeated curtly.
Alex gave him a cold look. It made Miles clear his throat to try and lighten the mood with a switch of conversation. “So, Alex, I was wondering if you’ve continued your plans on the expansion? I’m very curious to see what you’ve come up with this time.”
It was the first she’d heard of any plans regarding the hotel, and her instant wonder was how they would manage it all with their financial problems.
“We’re not expanding,” Nick intervened quietly before Alex had a moment to respond. Miles raised his brows, “You’re not? But what about the layout of the casino-“ “Mister Turner has decided against it, thinking it’s best if we let things settle a bit after all the ruckus in the papers.”
Miles looked to Alex as if silently asking for the confirmation of this info. When Alex refused to meet his gaze, the mayor almost looked irritated. “Let things settle a bit?!” he asked, “You’ve ‘let things settle’ for quite long enough, I think! What happened to our plans of opening that casino we’d always dreamed about? What about the day spa?”
“It’s not that simple, Miles,” Alex tried to reason. He ran a hand through his slick hair, feeling his headache getting worse by the minute. But Miles was having none of it. “This hotel wasn’t just your dream, Alex. It was mine, too. And you’re selfish for not wanting to make a better future for all of us.”
The hotel owner stood up with such a force his chair scraped across the floor and fell backwards. And with the flair of his long blazer he had stormed out of the room.
She found herself in the garden once more. And she wasn’t alone. Miles stood on the front porch, leaning his arms on the stone railing, seemingly just taking in the beautiful scenery in front of him.
“How did you sleep?” Miles asked her kindly. It was as if he’d let the annoyance from before wash off of him like the chilly autumn wind blowing the leaves from the trees before them. She admired him for it, genuinely aware she was always one to retain resentment when she’d been cross. “Surprisingly well, actually. Probably the best few nights I’ve had in a long time.”
Miles looked at her in a silent inquiry for her to elaborate. “I’ve had migraines since I was very little. They usually peak at the end of a long day or during stressful situations. Yet for some reason, I haven’t had one since I arrived here,” she explained.
“Even though you’ve had some long days and stressful situations,” Miles probed gently. She huffed, “You could say that.”
Miles seemed to mull it over for a moment. “No matter what happens at this hotel, it’s always been a very peaceful environment,” he said, “It’s the main reason we chose this particular location to open it and deem it as The Grand ‘Tranquility’ Hotel.” She hummed with interest.
“Of course, we would’ve named it something ridiculous otherwise,” he joked, “Like ‘Les Cactus’ or something. And we’d only ever pronounce it with a horrible French accent. That would be the rule.” She laughed, “Would you really have named your hotel that?” “Oh, for sure. Alex and I had it all figured out, no matter what the outcome would be.”
“Which is why you were so upset when you found out about him cancelling the casino,” she mused. He nodded, “We used to talk about everything, all the time. Now it’s like he’s always too busy to have a bit of fun. I feel like I don’t know him as well as I used to, and it worries me.”
She’d spent the rest of the afternoon strolling around the scenery with Miles, and he told her all about his ideas of a grand casino and a renewed Tranquility Base, instead of just a hotel. The sparkle in his eyes showed his excitement and she was happy to be a vent for him and his crazy dreams. She hoped it would all work out for him one day.
She hoped she wouldn’t be the one who would have to tell him about the hotel’s impending bankruptcy, because it was evident that Miles didn’t know a thing about it.
They’d all had a pretty late brunch, so dinner couldn’t come soon enough for them. But when the hotel owner himself failed to turn up, Miles seemed to sink in his seat more and more ever so slightly as the minutes passed by while they waited.
“This is bullshit,” Matt growled, getting up, “I’m sick of him running away from his shit.” “Wait,” she called out, catching up to him as he was about to talk through the doorway. “Let me speak to him first.”
She gave Matt a questioning look when they’d arrived in front of her room and he’d halted to a sudden stop. He nodded his head in the direction of the door she’d only ever glanced at through the corner of her eye, never thinking anything else of it. “Room 505,” was all he’d said, before he left her in the corridor and went back in the direction they’d come from.
The door was opened ever so slightly, and she would’ve knocked if the eerie creak of its hinges hadn’t made her presence known already. She stepped into the room, and it was a lot for her senses to take in.
There was no lavish wooden floor, no king-sized bed with drapes hanging from the ceiling and surely enough it wasn’t the grand apartment complex she’d thought him to have within the hotel. It was just a simple room, arguably a minor downgrade from hers.
There were a few things that were possibly his own additions, such as the strange pattern on the carpeted floor and the white sofas. Other than that, however, the room was plain. A bed with a wooden headboard adorned with white sheets, illuminated by the standard glass in lead lights that could be spotted all over the hotel as its trademark.
He was sat on the bed with his back turned to her, his elbows resting on his knees with his head hung low. His shoulders were tense, and his usual slicked hair was now a greasy mess, evidently caused by the stressed fingers that had run through it. His jacket was strewn across a seat, leaving him in his white shirt, which happened to be the exact same shade as his bedsheets.
“What are you doing in here?” he asked, rubbing his chin in his hand. “I wanted to see if you hadn’t collapsed from a stroke just yet,” she replied cynically. He let out a bland hum, not really seeming to care. It was a cue to her that he might be more willing to fix the boundaries they had so blatantly steered away from when they’d made their bad start with each other. “I did come to see if you were okay, though,” she began. He turned his head for a bit, and she could see his raised eyebrows. “Why?” he asked.
“You were put on the spot. They’re asking a lot of you right now, and while I can see that they only wish to help you, there’s still a lot of things you need to work out before you can even think about remodelling or expanding. The casino, the day spa, all of it. You need more time, and they’re getting too impatient.”
He eyed her curiously. “After all I’ve said to you, after all the things I’ve spat in your face, you’re still being sympathetic? I’m sensing ulterior motives for this one, writer.” She rolled her eyes indignantly. “I’m pretty sure you see ulterior motives behind everything and everyone, mister Turner.” He gave her an amused smirk, and it made her almost instantly relax. How just one quirk of a lip could give her so much relief was beyond her. She’d taken a big step in the right direction, and that was enough for tonight.
Stepping out into the hallway, she nearly ran into Miles. “Oh, sorry, love. I was just about to knock-“ “Could I speak with you for a moment?” she interrupted him. His expression showed his evident confusion at her directness but nodded anyway.
When Miles told Alex the next day that he’d be off to deal with ‘unforeseen business’ and would no longer be staying at the hotel, Alex seemed relieved. He thanked him for the statement in the paper and apologized for his outburst however, which made Miles more content. While Matt was loading his suitcase in the car and Alex was having a smoke off to the side, he gave the writer an unexpected but welcomed hug. “You’re good for him,” he muttered in her ear, “and he needs someone like you now more than ever. You have my thanks.” It had left her speechless and all she could do was wave him off as the car disappeared behind the treeline.
