my absolute favourite thing about the kirk and spock dynamic is that the whole time you’re watching the show spock is gaslighting you into thinking that kirk is this loose canon and spock is paragon of logic keeping his captain on the straight and narrow when its very clearly the other way round. aside from being turned on by everyone and fighting like an old-timey boxer…. kirk is just like.. quite a logical, stable guy. like yeah he rules with his emotions but he’s rarely reckless or erratic, even in situations of immense pressure he’s always calm and measured. sure kirk is unhinged and insane, but we knew that right off the bat. spock on the other hand tries to hide how insanely balls to the walls crazy he is by standing next to jim and hiding all his derangement with logic. i think the reason bones beefs with spock so much because he is the only one who has noticed that spock is an absolutely unhinged individual. (jim is too busy doodling <3 mr jim spock <3 all over his briefings to notice)

Round 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda Under Cut
Joan Watson
How were BBC Sherlock shippers so rancid about a WOMAN who wasnt even in the SAME SHOW?????
Martin Freeman of BBC Sherlock insulted Elementary and specifically Lucy Liu in the press. He straight up called Lucy Liu a "dog" in an interview APPARENTLY as a joke, because calling female actors ugly is hilarious. Benedict Cumberbatch was more measured about it, but he still said he was cynical about Elementary because it would lose the "male friendship" dynamic, which of course Johnlock shippers used against Joan Watson fans. Even the lead BBC Sherlock actors got in on the yaoi victimization of Joan Watson... 😔
she wasn't even in the same SHOW as the yaoi I've been convinced she deserves to win the entire poll. I was a Johnlocker but I did watch the first season of Elementary and it was fine????? It was totally okay????? Especially in hindsight given how hard Sherlock season four flopped. Also Lucy Liu is a queen and deserved zero vitriol for *checks notes* playing a character???? A fucking fictional character???????? Oh my god we were all SO mean to this show and we (or at least I) thought it was like The Good Fight™️, like we were defending BBC Sherlock against copyright infringement and straightwashing and Jonny Lee Miller's bizarre scarf, (it wasn't a good scarf I do stand by that) but then Elementary didn't make Holmes and Watson a couple either???? And also it didn't insult its audience constantly etc etc we've all seen the Hbomberguy Sherlock is Garbage video. This is really long sorry hashtag justice for Joan Watson
Nyota Uhura
She's Spock's canon partner in AOS, and I get it because they're not a great couple, but she gets villianized in fic so much. They constantly make her an asshole (which totally has nothing to do with her being black /sarcasm) and abusive just for the crime of dating a man headcanoned as gay. And I mean, I think Spock is gay and her being a love interest was unnecessary but still! She's cool!
Oh my god so in the Star Trek reboot she’s Spock’s girlfriend and the fandom has no idea what to do with her??? Like she is ALWAYS either such a bitch or like the mom friend? And there is so much more to her character than that? But they always break down her character AND find a quick and easy way to break up her and Spock. I’m not even mad at that but at least treat their relationship with some weight instead of just being like ‘it never mattered’. People can love multiple people throughout the course of their lives. You know that right? Just because you loved someone before doesn’t make your new love any less special. And even headcanoning Spock as gay… you realize he doesn’t need to be attracted to Uhura for their relationship to have mattered, right? Even if he confused friendship for romantic attraction, him feeling such strong friendship and openly expressing it is so monumental for him!!!
she's dating Spock, who people ship with Kirk, so fans have decided that it's horrible writing and "really, they're just defending her, the movies turned her into just a love interests," which is not at all true. The movies do so much more for her to the point that the fans who have only seen the movies think that the main characters are Kirk, Spock, and Uhura instead of the Kirk, Spock, McCoy of the original series. Also having a black women being shown as being desired and loved in mainstream media, particularly by one of the most popular characters of all time, is a good thing, not making her "just a love interest"

since you are a queerbaiting scholar, I have a question that I don't remember if you've ever covered. Do you think the t'hy'la footnote in the Star Trek TMP novelization could be considered an example of queerbaiting or is it just too iconic to fall under that category?
oh unequivocally like for clarification for people i guess who have a more narrow and specific definition of queerbait i do think it like kind of dodges around the entire central conceit of hoped for "gay representation" or something that is not really the lens i think its viewed thru in 70s fandom the way it was in 2010s as in like the way people frame queerbaiting they want characters to join this pantheon of confirmed gay characters fitting a mold of existing gay characters on tv to some degree and nobody was assuming like from that tease that kirk and spock would be portrayed as a couple in future movies or anything the way the queerbait dance between creator and fandom was portrayed in 2010s queerbait discourse but i think it was probably the first and most high profile attempt to date for a creator to try and mediate the relationship between the media property shippers and ship haters through like a direct communication of like canon material i guess like i would have to go on a pretty big deep dive back into some of the random star trek zines ive looked at to find sources again im struggling to find it right now but i know i read some various responses from fans at the time and kirk/spock shippers did react negatively to the footnote in much the same way people reacted to like ship tease jokes in classic queerbait tv shows on tumblr which i found really interesting people did think it was trying to shut kirk/spock shippers down just as much as people thought it was energizing them and speaking to them it really threads the needle so perfectly by like opening the door to a whole new type of possibility and whatever to the types of people who want that while also in text saying theyre not lovers hah hah isnt that weird which i think some fans also felt uncomfortable about because it was like shining a light on their niche corner of the fandom letting people know there were people who thought the relationship between kirk and spock might be romantic but again ive only read like two accounts of this so i honestly have no clue how widespread each type of reaction was i wonder if it also like re inflamed fights about if they do or dont have sex lol because that was a whole thing which is slash was for people who believed it was sexual vs kirk&spock was like homoerotic friendship to nonsexual romance fanfic and these were bitter fandom divides as well but of course and like this isnt to paint it all in a negative light but i do think the dissenting voices get a bit lost in the history and i thought it was kind of fascinating how similar a lot of the weird mediations felt to like some actor at comiccon 2012 saying well i dont know but it could be romantic you know it creates the perfect vessel for everyone to see what they want thru it so i think in many ways it was groundbreaking queerbait but also tbh did it better than anything else like truly stoking the fires of fan speculation and probably introduced a lot of people to the idea of "the premise" and planted the seeds in their minds to begin with and again few other queerbait texts are out here inventing special words that mean lover for the characters to call each other few people that bold like again somewhat different context but it does kind of feel like a first of its kind broaching into that messy dynamic between fans and the powers that be as they sometimes called them and truly a fascinating iconic piece of queerbait history
ok upon further looking i believe i must have read a scan of "a careful analysis: the roddenberry footnote" by christopher randolph (a pseudonym for della van hise the author of killing time) that was printed in the star trek zine naked times issue #3 but i have been unable to locate an actual link to the full text beyond the excerpts from fanlore here [x]

KICKS MY LITTLE FEETS IN THE AIR FOREVERRRRR 🤭🤭🙈🙈🙈 YAAYAYY MUTUAL OBSESSIONNNN ❣️❣️❣️❣️ILYYYY
Favorite character: tos is spock tng is data ds9 is quark HEEHEEEE 🤭🤭🤭
Second favorite character: tos is jim tng is UHM. IMPOSSIBLE TO CHOOSE. BUT MY SWEET ANGEL WESLEY 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 OR MY SILLY ANGEL WORF 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻 and ds9 i loveeee jadzia… 💙💙💙
Least favorite character: tos i dont dislike anyone on the crew so probably mudd bc even tho i really love his eps hes a good villain hes also a misogynist </3 tng is pulaski like SORRYYY to all the thinkpiece bitches out there saying its not feminist to hate her bc shes basically the same as bones its like. 1. okay so shes kind of badly written bc they just tried to rip off bones and 2. her thing with data isnt the same as his with spock bc spock was bitchy right back but data just didnt get it. so she was just being straight up cruel to him all the time and nobody defended him. YEAH SHE GOT ME HEATED. and ds9 i got distracted by so many other tv shows shes been on hiatus for a bit but kai winn booooo we hate your ass 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
The character I’m most like: now. Uhm. literally fighting one million years with myself to determine kirk or spock and i never fully decided so we will leave it at they are two sides of the same coin and that coin is MEEEE ^_^. tng is hard to say bc i love them all but none of them ever grabbed me by the throat and shoved me into a mirror like so many other shows have done. i think either data geordi or picard (minus his leadership skills) would be the closest fit for me. and well as those who were here for biquark url know. 😏🤭
Favorite pairing: tos is obviously spirk 5ever and always like it changed the world. they are the fucking blueprint for everything they invented gay people. tng literally everything is so fun i think everyone has huge chemistry such interesting dynamics with each other. deanna and riker invented t4t bi4bi love but then geordi and data invented my lovely robot wife but then rikorf invented silly boy and autistic boy love and then qcard invented me and my wet crumpled paper bag weirdo boyfriend. HOW COULD I DECIDE… 💔💔 and ds9 quodo is everythang… i love you sillies ❤️
Least favorite pairing: this has less to do with tos and more the crimes of other trek series using tos characters but. spuhura i guess you had some moments but why did they do both your characters the disservice :(( and tos chapel and spock was so nice and hurting like i love her she crucified herself for the right to love a stoic alien (girl i get ittt) and snw fucking slaughtered her. literally feel sick thinking about how horribly they adapted her. evil and sick and twisted. anyways. tng i didnt love geordis weird hologirlfriend and also barclay stay your ass away from any woman on board. ds9 whaaaleeeee i dont really hate anything at the moment ^-^ i guess when i swing back around to it i may have more to say…. 🧐
Favorite moment: OHHHOHHHHOHHH. WELL. tos pretty much anything with spock he is my beautiful angel. but ill say the entirety of city on the edge of forever its so insanely good and has me vomiting up blood. oh also i love kevin riley when he goes crazy and is singing to the ship :•) tng oh god when data is on that planet with the little girl hes pen pals with. ingrained in my brain forever. but there are honestly so many moments i could name like i think they might be my favorite crew ever like i said the chemistry between each and every character is so fucking amazing. and also horny. i love you deanna and riker 🫶🏻 and ds9 frankly im obsessed with quark and the undercover girl ferengi bc hes so bisexual with her in drag well um. who said that
Rating out of 10: 10/10 fucking all around forever theyre my three beautiful weed smoking girlfriends. We Dont Have To Talk About The Movies.

Things I like/love that have been ruined in canon.
In no particular order:
Star Trek: I was so-so about all the TV sequels/prequels (liked DS9 for about a minute).  But the movies . . .  Fuck Amok Time, they gave us Horny On Demand Spock and Kirk sexually harassing females across the universe.
Tumblr media
Star Wars:  Jar Jar Binks.  Need I say more?
Tumblr media
Doctor Who:  I really enjoyed the original series, even though it fell apart in the last years.  The remake made The Doctor a romantic/sexual being.  No no fucking goddamn no.
Tumblr media
Supernatural:  After Season 5, took everything everybody loved and broke it, killed off favorite characters for Shock Value, then faked bringing them back just to kill them again.  Really really hated its fans.
Tumblr media
Sherlock: Second season became super self-conscious that it was A Hit, started mocking women because being written by a gay man and a misogynist.  Really really hated its fans, then whined when fans stopped watching and the series was canceled.
Tumblr media
Sleepy Hollow:  Was just staring to get into the Ship when its creators literally verbally attacked fans on Twitter, then intentionally destroyed Ichabod/Abby by killing off Abby. Really REALLY hated its fans.
Tumblr media
American Auto: Started out clever and funny like The Office, in Season 2 devolved into 4th grade potty humor.
Tumblr media
Clarice:  Gave it a chance even though there was no Lecter.  First two episodes showed promise, then made Clarice a whiny, weak character, then added an incredibly ahistoric 1991 trans “women” FBI agent -- at a time when in reality gay male agents were fired for fear of their being blackmailed -- who literally yelled at Clarice, and Clarice took it.  Thankfully its ratings plummeted after that and it was canceled.
Tumblr media
Grantchester: Watched it for Geordie, then they had Geordie cheat on his wife.  NOPE.
Tumblr media
Foyle’s War: The original series ended perfectly.  Then they dragged it from its grave and made a thin, forced series about the Cold War.  Bleh.
Tumblr media
Inspector Lewis: The original series ended perfectly.  Then they dragged it from its grave, made Dr. Hobson clingy and whiny, ruined the dynamic of Lewis and Hathaway, ended it terribly.  Bastards.
Tumblr media
Endeavor:  Revealed Thursday cheated on his wife during the War, then had Thursday accept bribe money, then the series finale . . .  Don’t ask.
Tumblr media
Shetland:  Perez goes against his ethics and tries to fuck his close friend’s wife.  But especially they had Tosh r*ped.  Fuck that shit forever.
Tumblr media
Once Upon a Time: First season was wonderful.  Second season iffy.  After that turned the series into a promotional vehicle for Disney movies.  Robert Carlyle gained 30 pounds, lost all energy, and mailed in his performance.  They tried to end it well, but brought it back rebooted and godawful, especially by killing off Belle.  Truly, truly awful.
Tumblr media
MCU:  I loved the first Thor, first Captain America, first Avengers, the Ironman trilogy, and especially Spider-man: Homecoming.  Then it all went to fucking hell.  Don’t get me started.
Tumblr media
Miraculous Ladybug: From season 3 on, its creators took it from being a fun, exciting, sweet, enjoyable superhero story to trying to turn it into part of the MCU.  Fucking do NOT get me started about what they did to my man Gabriel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Possible Future Canon Ruin:
Father Brown:  3 cast members have left the series and been replaced.  Haven’t seen Season 10 yet, but I have a bad feeling about this . . .
Tumblr media
Addendum:
Rewatched Seasons 7 & 8 of Foyle’s War and actually liked them quite a lot.  Me having a crush on Tim McMullan helped.
Have seen Season 10 of Father Brown . . .
Tumblr media
The directing is slow and stiff.  There’s no dynamic worth mentioning among the new characters.  All the episodes felt like dress rehearsals, not polished performances.

Final frontier gets a lot of deserved flack, but i love how it looks at our main 3’s dynamic.
They start out saying they are alone, men with no families, and then at the end come to realize they are each others family.
Plus kirks insistence that he cant die while the others are with him, and then when he thought he was going to die, Spock tells him “impossible, you were not alone.”
Its just so, so beautiful

strange new worlds episode 1 onions:
i know so far im riding on the nostalgia wave and i'll probably end up liking the show Less than i do now but . . . this is literally all i ever wanted from a trek show
(well ALL i ever wanted also includes jim but they're not giving him to us for a number of reasons)
on the one hand it feels like they're cramming all the characters want to see into one place but ON THE OTHER HAND !!!!
we finally got to see m'benga im so happy
i really like uhura so far she's so nerdy and enthusiastic which is a welcome change. she's younger in the snw timeline and this is a great way to show it, im excited to see her character develop. (and im so happy we're spared from spuhura even if it means s'pring which actually deserves its own paragraph)
T'PRING MY ABSOLUTE BELOVED she's stunning !!!! the hair the jewelry the outfice she's just as elegant and sophisticated as in tos which is so good to see. idk abt her characterisation yet seeing as she had 2 scenes total in this episode but hhhhhh im not sure if this is my favourite spock/t'pring dynamic ever. ik my opinions are heavily clouded by my existing preferences but i just feel the need to give spock a love interest is... unnecessary. is2g kurtzman is deathly afraid of spock being shipped with m*n there's no other explanation. but yeah i feel like the established relationship takes away a lot from the dynamic, but it also gives opportunity for t'pring to have her own personality and inner conflicts outside of her relationship with spock OR stonn
ORTEGAS??? MA'AM?? i am looking very respectfully . . . i'll be very mad if she's just snw's version of tig notaro's character in dis (snarky butch with a high one liner per minute speed) but she's. very handsome. i desperately want to see more of her
idk about chapel yet and she doesn't really feel Like Chapel to me but <3 . very manic pixie dream girl
THERES AN ANDORIAN FINALLY AN ANDORIAN !!!!! they were in the post credits trailer thing so that probably means they're a significant character!!!! at long last. now all we need is a tellarite
i really don't care for pike's c-ptsd or the whole unavoidable future doomed from the beginning etc etc narrative it's just idk. i know partly it's just a nod to the canon and they had to follow through with dis' bullshit plot but :/ for a main character this is weak motivation
(also im sooooo disappointed by the way pike & spock's dynamic is handled by snw so far give me hero worship !!!! give me mentor figure !!!!! speaking of)
spock.... look how they massacred my boy.... i know it's impossible to satisfy tos/aos fans because it's not The Spock, and im completely biased in this regard, but its just a complete 180 from dis!spock who is literally autistic tormented by vision locked up in an asylum FORCED TO GO ON A UNIVERSE SAVING QUEST BECAUSE DESTINY IS UNAVOIDABLE and snw's straightwashed well adjusted spock. once again this is only the first episode and i might be completely wrong about everything but idk idk . ethan peck is a great actor tho and it's nice to see his interpretation of all the little spock mannerisms. his delivery feels as a kind of in-between between tos and aos!spocks in that he is much less emo than aos but also not the fully established tos!spock who is 100% comfortable in his skin. also the moment on the alien planet where he randomly let out an inhuman (sic!) shriek because he was in a lot of pain and then immediately went back to normal?? what was that about :/
also sam !!!!!!! im so desperate to know how the kirks are doing in this timeline !!!!! i have a very clear characterisation of him in my mind that's 99% fanon but im trying to have an open mind abt him. wheres jim.... how is winona doing....
im probably forgetting soooo much of what i wanted to say but yeah so far i have no trust in kurtzman & goldman and where this show is going to go but it IS exciting for me as you can clearly see from this fucking essay

Watching TOS for the first time
As someone who has loved star trek for most of my life I thought it’s weird that I have never watched the show that started it all and after watching all the episodes that are on Netflix boy do I have thoughts on the show. Here is just some of the rambling thoughts I have on the show in general.
It is both way better then I expected and also worse? I love that most of the sets were just clearly in a sound stage with sand thrown on the ground and fake rocks and trees and the sky is always just a cloudless sea of bright colour, pink or red mainly. Also the rocks normally has glitter in them and that made me smile. Some of the episodes were definitely better then sci-fi today.
Also so much of start trek lore is clearly not set up in this series and it was funny seeing the ways the different shows don’t match up, especially star trek: Enterprise. It was insane to me that starfleet had never even seen a romulan before Kirk and the crew met them, somehow they didn't have video when the war started???
Also Chekov wasn’t in the first season??? Shout out to the the random other guy who sometimes was the navigator or pilot and in literally in more episodes than Chekov but I literally have no idea what his name was and he never spoke a single line and was sometimes where Chekov was sitting in shots from the back like they just never shot scenes from the back when Chekov was there??? super weird.  And there was a sorta supporting character named Janice who I literally had never seen anyone mention, though she did disappear once I felt the show actually got good. And only existed to get creeped on by the men in the show. So RIP her. Also nurse Chapel, literally had no idea that there was a nurse who was pretty consistently in the show.
Also the way Kirk is perceived in pop culture doesn't really match up with how I feel he was in the show. Like he’s def a ladies man (where women literally fall at his feet in seconds after meeting him) and stuff like that but he was also really strange but I did enjoy he’s over the top acting in literally every episode and that there was somehow always some woman that was needed for an away mission from his past that was highly qualified but he just had no idea worked on his ship??? and that he literally went on every away mission even though it seemed like maybe the captain shouldn't just be putting himself in such dangerous situations. Also Kirk seemed to have a thing for blondes. (Note sometimes all i could think that if Kirk was a woman, that character would be could a Mary Sue literally all the time)[Though the few times in fights he literally just jumped into the air and used his legs to kick the opponent in the chest made me lose my shit, like he just fell straight to the ground afterwards and had to then pick himself up, and somehow this worked? the fighting in this show was amazing and terrible and ridiculous.]
Spock on the other hand seemed the most close to my preconceived thoughts. Stand offish, smart, no emotions, pointy ears, green blood. Also loved that  many episodes just ended with everyone messing with him. Though I liked when he was allowed to show emotions, he had a lovely smile.
Out of what were the main characters I was the most surprised at my thoughts on Doctor McCoy. As great as Spock and Kirk were, he definitely was my favourite. Most of the time his point of view was most similar to mine. Also he did not say DAMN IT JIM as often as I expected, definitely all the characters have been a bit flanderized in pop culture. And him and Spock were definitely the most fun dynamic out of the 3 at least to me.
It was also interesting to see that star trek has always just kinda ... been like that. It enjoyed its fight scenes and sex appeal. I mean Kirk can barely keep his shirt on most of the time and women are literally almost always in some ridiculous get up. So it’s interesting that so much of the modern thoughts surrounding star trek being too focused on fight scenes and sex seem to be wrong just based on how much of that was in the show from the start.
Gotta admit though that a lot of my thoughts are just ignoring some of the yikes stuff in it, as for being made in the 60′s it sometimes really shows it age, while other times takes a stronger stance on social issues than shows today would even dare to. Also the show is very American and you can feel that it was written with the idea that America is the best or at least that is how Kirk feels.
On that line of thought the very last episode of season was definitely the most sexist out of the whole show it felt like. Literally in the last episode it just told us that women weren’t allowed to be captains in starfleet?????? And that clearly this woman is insane and hysterical which was really gross to see. Like she was smart enough to change bodies with Kirk and be a doctor but literally almost instantly lost her shit at the slightest questioning and that she would have just been so happy if she was simply accepted her lot in life as a woman???? Also this is the reason why they broke up in the first place, she was just “jealous” of Kirk because his sex, his gender didn't stop him from his dream.  Like super gross and not a great way to end the show thats for sure.
It’s just so confusing that the pilot had a woman as first officer and then after that not a single woman is ever seen in a commanding or leadership positions , unless she was called a priestess or some other name. Never captain, and that is because women apparently can’t be captains.
Even though the end was a bit bitter the show was fun and I enjoyed it and i can see why is become the pop culture icon that it is today . Super excited to watch the movies now and I guess I now have to watch all 7 season of next gen, a show I have also not watched.
Though I still have many other thoughts about the show, this post is way too long.

Fic Questions Meme
How do you come up with the titles for your fics?
Is there anything worse than writing a title? Can I interest you in an action scene instead?
2. Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?
cw: abuse (and the fic itself addresses pretty dark shit)
each lovely phrase (E) - Outlast - Eddie Gluskin/Waylon Park.
This is a weird vehicle for it, but this was written in part after my experience losing my abusive father to terminal illnesses without receiving any kind of resolution to my grief and anger. My situation was nowhere near as severe as the POV character's – my experience was entirely verbal/psychological mistreatment – and the fic wasn't intended to be a mirror of reality, but the rage and grief I felt definitely informed the POV character's pretty heavily.
3. What character do you identify with most?
I didn't have an answer to questions like this for a long time, but Kim Wexler from Better Call Saul is probably the closest I've ever come to wholly seeing myself in a character. She's a small town escapee with big ambitions, where her choices early in her life led her to some toxic and morally grey situations. There are innate tensions between competing goals – her desire to do something genuinely good, her desire to make all her work worthwhile by being intensely career oriented, and her desire to get one over on the people who have made her life harder – that really resonate with my early adult experience.
4. If you wrote a sequel to any of your published fics, what would it be about?
I'm satisfied with all of the currently published fics as they stand, actually; if I felt like something warranted a sequel or epilogue I generally wrote it directly after the first thing and posted it.
5. How would you describe your style?
I don't actually know how to answer this; I lack the technical vocabulary to define it. I'm sure someone has an answer, looking at my fic externally, but all I try to do is climb as far into a character's head as possible. Sometimes canon makes this easier; sometimes a film, a tv show, or a piece of written fiction has a very distinct voice to it, either in diction or visually, so its easy to match. Otherwise, I tend to do some exploratory writing from a character's POV to see if I can hit on something that makes me feel good.
6. Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)?
I don't actually believe in guilty pleasures when reading/writing, because its fiction! It isn't real! I'm unabashedly a monsterlover, robot fucker, dubious consent supporter, villain/hero shipper, and a whole mess of other things.
7. What's the angstiest idea you've ever come up with?
I have a half-written fic rotting in my drafts folder where one of the main characters is dead from the start (they eventually get better, see my addendum to MCD fics in question 16 later on) and the whole thing is just a wild ride through grief and love, and not in any fandom or for any pairing you'd probably expect looking at either my reading or writing history.
8. What's the weirdest AU you've ever come up with?
I desperately wanted to write the Dinotopia!AU for SteveBucky where Bucky was a Skybax rider and Steve was a scholar but I couldn't figure out a good plot for the premise.
9. Got any premises on the back burner that you'd care to share?
I have an Inception fic due for a rewrite that was started based off a bunch of dreams I'd actually had, but the plot has changed (it actually has one instead of being a series of set pieces) so I need to restructure it.
10. Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?
I have a few pages of a ST (AOS) WIP that's dom!Spock/mouthy sub!Kirk that explores D/s dynamics in the vein of Spock's enjoyment of having control (after feeling out of control compared to other Vulcans) and Kirk's unresolved issues with authority. Oh – and the entirety of the AOS plot after Kirk's disciplinary hearing doesn't happen, they're still at the Academy, and instead of punting Kirk they assign him to Spock under probation and Spock is actively one of Kirk's professors.
11. How do you begin a story--with the plot, or the characters?
Characters, by asking if there's any story there I'd want to tell for them in the first place. Sometimes that doesn't come along right away, but usually I can cook up a premise. Then it's seeing if I like it enough that I can get a plot up and running.
12. Are you what George R. R. Martin would call an "architect" or a "gardener"? (How much do you plan in advance, versus letting the story unfold as you go?)
Bigtime gardener. Sometimes I plant things that don't ever grow or need to be heavily pruned, but largely I don't write in order OR plot in order. Sometimes I write two scenes on opposite sides of the fic one right after another and use the results of the later scene to fill in the middle.
13. Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?
Robert E. Howard is unquestionably at the top, outstripping any competition by miles.
14. Any fandom tropes you can't resist?
I will make at least a cursory attempt to read any fuck or die fic no matter how much I dislike the writing style. That link will never be unclicked.
15. Any fandom tropes you can't stand?
SO many. I'm one of the pickier readers and both my kudos and bookmarks reflect it. Most in the form of AUs (coffee shop, college, domestic, etc.) are a hard pass for me, but it genuinely varies from fandom to fandom and even ship to ship within the same fandom. If I don't like something generally (i.e. omegaverse) there's almost always at least one very well-written exception to that somewhere.
16. Major character death--do you ever write/read it?
I've only read a handful of 'real' MCD fics. If the canon conceit is that death is actually temporary, I'll go in as long as the condition is guaranteed to be reversed in some way (rebirth, resurrection, reincarnation) for a happy ending. I have a couple sitting in the background that I hope I could turn into something really wrenching (with revival and happy endings!).

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love 💙
Ah! Thank you :D <3 Wow this was way harder that I thought. At first I couldn't decide, then I decided on too many, it was so hard to narrow it down, so I'm not saying these are my top five, but I love each of them <3
The One That Got Away
Pairing: Jim Kirk/Spock (TOS)
Rating: E
Words: 30k
Summary: At Starfleet academy Jim and Spock were friends (with benefits), but when Spock left to serve on the Enterprise under Captain Pike, Jim was left heartbroken. Years later Jim was given Captaincy of the Enterprise after Pike's promotion. Aboard he was reunited with his old friend, but how much had changed over the years? Could there ever be more between them, or would Spock forever be the one that got away?
~~~ I've been proud of a lot of my fics, but this one is my one of my most recent bigger fics and I'm actually in love with it. I thoroughly enjoyed writing the entire thing, and I've reread it several times because I just love it so much. I put my heart and soul into it, I did my best, and I'm so happy with it.
2. First Day
Pairing: Balthazar/Lucifer (SPN)
Rating: E
Words: 14k
Summary: It's Lu's first day at a new school as a Math teacher and he instantly falls for the French teacher, Balthazar, who has an affinity for skinny jeans and v-necks. Balthazar's ex shows up and wants to get back with Balthazar, will he go back with his ex or stay with Lu?
~~~ This is an old one of mine (which I'm intending to write a sequel for one day), and while my writing has improved significantly since this fic, I still love it. I love the rarepair, I love their dynamic, and I think the smut is hot (I should, I wrote it, right?). This is an example of me writing a fic purely for me.
3. In Search of the Sun
Pairing: Jim Kirk/Spock (AOS), Jim Kirk Prime/Spock Prime
Rating: T
Words: 7k
Summary: Spock Prime awakens from a dream about his long lost bondmate, but was it really a dream, or was it the answer to bringing his love back?
~~~ I needed a fix it so badly for the Primes cause I just have sooooo many feels about them, so I wrote out my headcanon for Spock Prime getting his Jim back, and I love it dearly. It satisfies my Primes feels so well.
4. When Fantasy Becomes Reality
Pairing: Hank/Connor (DBH)
Rating: E
Words: 8k
Summary: Connor is away helping Markus for the weekend, so Hank thinks he’s safe to do whatever he wants, including an afternoon wank. What happens if Connor comes home early though?
~~~ I'm particularly proud of this one for the way I wrote it, especially the first chapter. It wasn't exactly something I'd written before, but I had a vision, and a strong love for these characters and this ship, and I did my best, and it's one that I go back to time and again because I'm so proud of it (and because its hot AF and I enjoy reading it a lot).
5. Under the Shape of Dessert
Pairing: Greg Lestrade/Mycroft Holmes (BBC Sherlock)
Rating: T
Words: 2.5k
Summary: After his divorce Greg finds himself lonely, so John sets him up on a blind date. When Mycroft shows up at the restaurant Greg can hardly believe it.
~~~ This is one of my favourites out of both of my Under the Mistletoe series' and an unexpected one at that. I sort of struggled for an idea for this ship, and then once it came to me I needed to flesh it out, and a whole story came with it, and sometimes those are the best types of fics. I thoroughly enjoy their whole interaction too, and the way Mycroft is with Greg.
The Mercy of Quality: SNW Season 1 Finale in Review
Finally saw the S1 finale of Strange New Worlds, and other than not liking the actor who played James Kirk[1], it's probably one of the handful of episodes from the season that I'd say is genuinely firing on all cylinders. I didn't much like the previous Aliens riff episode—it's a bad fit for Star Trek (you just had a whole episode about not killing kids but now its okay to kill these kids because they're aggressive and violent and not cute and having adorable line reads of technobabble? The Devil in the Dark is right there, you guys), and killing Hemmer is just the most breathtakingly bone-headed decision possible (let's kill off our only disabled actor!)—but the actual script, from a craft standpoint, is really good. Other than a very awkward reference to station wagons early in the episode[2], it avoids the pitfalls of so many previous scripts, with its too-contemporary dialogue and over-reliance on Whedonesque quippery: the script treats the circumstances with the gravity they deserve without ever dragging it too far into Grim and Gritty Serious Prestige TV tripe (see: Discovery Season 1), and the finale continues that trend. Everyone is allowed to act like a grown-up and a professional: Ortegas especially gets to shine this episode because Melissa Navia's exclamations are sharp and on-point: she's not just cracking jokes on the bridge like the class clown who can't help themselves, she's got worthwhile things to say, and it makes sense for her character in the moment to be unable to keep herself from saying them. Equally, when Pike rightly slaps her down for it—this is not the time and place, lieutenant—it restores to him a sense of authority NuTrek has often undermined: in trying to make him the nicest, most genial, easy-going captain in Starfleet he often fails to get the chance to look and sound like a captain, someone who, when the chips are down, can take command. Anson Mount gets to show qualities other than charm or brooding-on-the-future frowning: he sings this episode, it's great.
Not every SNW episode should be serious—arguable the best episode of the season was Spock Amok—but every episode should sound and feel like the 23rd century, and this episode brought a level of professionalism and—for lack of a better word—dignity back to the cast. It lets them be and sound like the Starfleet officers they are, without sacrificing the personalities the show has done so much to shape over the course of the season—the dynamic, funny, interesting people we know them to be (in fact this is where the fairly-flat Kirk… well, mostly falls flat)/[3] It didn't have moments that took me out of the script, and I got all sorts of gushy over Future Pike's hybrid-alt-future-semi-TWK uniform. (The TWK-TUC uniforms are still Trek’s classiest, along with the Insurrection-onwards white dress uniforms I so adore).
Also, more importantly, I’ve already written at-length about SNW's inability to pick a lane when it comes to canon: too loose with canon for the fans who love that sort of thing, not loose enough to not feel crushed by the weight of it. Additionally, in some sense the S1 finale is just a retread of plot points that felt solved already: Pike coming to terms with his future. We- we did this already. We solved it. But that doesn’t really bother me, because this episode does it better than those episodes before it: for the first time, SNW meaningfully makes a case for why SNW-one-day-becoming-TOS matters, why it shouldn’t drop canon and run off and do its own thing like I often feel it should. Why it’s a good thing that Pike not change his fate. Without ever placing us in TOS, it reminds us repeatedly that the stories told in TOS have value, that there’s more than just cardboard sets and dated hair. That’s there’s more to caring about TOS than just blind fan nostalgia for a thing they like and remember fondly. That Balance of Terror isn't just a TV show with member berries in it: it has a message worth hearing—that, no matter Pike’s qualities as a person, the universe is better with a reality where Kirk makes that fateful rendezvous. That the universe is better with a Spock who goes on to mind-meld with V’ger and the space whales, so that one day there will be a universe for the TNG crew to run around in, Voyager to soar over ice planets, and Deep Space Nine to ask the difficult questions about paradise. In its own way its a gentle rebuke to Abrams’s Kelvinverse’s central conceit: yes, you can take the TOS cast and send them down a whole new path in life, changing their fates±but maybe that’s not worth doing. Maybe their original fates, warts and all, are worth preserving, even if that means that Pike has a countdown timer over his head. Certain aspects of what is to come are avoidable, but shouldn’t be avoided.
I don’t know if I fully agree with it: as I’ve said elsewhere, knowing the flatter, one-dimensional characters Uhura and Chapel become in TOS isn’t great. The TOS ‘future’ is deeply flawed for some of these people it ways far more ignoble than Pike’s heroic sacrifice.
But I appreciate it. I like it. And it really made the case for what SNW can be at its best—it made me want to watch SNW season 2, because I know what the show can be at its best, and hope and pray it will be.
(Also, as addendum, the ending really drove home something someone else noted: Rebecca Romijn’s performance as Number One was one of few good things to emerge from the tattered corpse of Disco Season 2. She also has a truly excellent Short Trek: I was so excited to see her in SNW. And yet she’s barely in it? She sits out whole episodes, all-but cameos in others, has no presence in the finale until the last scene. Where the hell was she? Was there some Covid problems like Tis Notara on Discovery? It was so bizarre - where the heck was the cold, unemotional, controlled Number One of one of the best Short Treks? WHERE DID SHE GO?}
[1] hard shoes to fill, mind, but he really lacks any kind of strong screen presence—he's just kind of some guy, y'know? He's not bad, but he's just… a guy. If you don't feel like your actor playing Kirk counted lines so that he had the most, if you don't feel like he did everything to get all the camera time, steal every scene, it just doesn't feel right. I'm not even joking, it's an attitude - 'I am always the most important person in the scene' and the actor doesn't bring that.
[2] I don't care how folksy and old-fashioned Pike is supposed to be, it's like if I said of a group outing ''welp, time to get the chaise and four'—I'd be being deliberately, obnoxiously abstruse, and 'piling the kids in the station wagon' is a phrase that's already feels extinct in 2023, along with the station wagon. It beggars belief that this phrase is going to survive into the 23rd century. No. No! The writer's just making Pike into their own dad - they're getting 'cute'. Stop that.
[3] To commend the season as a whole, the show did marvelous work in really, truly building an ensemble. Imagine trying to do that fantasy episode with the Disco cast: you don't have enough named crewmemebers with pre-established personalities to make it work. Heck, they visit the mirror universe multiple times and you're left going, 'oh no, not evil that guy! And that girl is evil too, huh. So is that person. And is… is that someone we know, or just a background extra. Who is Bryce? Do we know a Bryce? Sounds like he should be running a surf shop, not serving in Evil Starfleet.'
Day 2: AU get me out of here - places to go when canon is complicated
It’s Day 2 for @roswellnewmexicocreate, time to celebrate those stories that I turn to when I can’t deal with canon, or when I don’t have the emotional energy to untangle all the emotions I have for what’s going on in canon. Alternative universes, the safe harbor for us. Below are a mix of rewrites of canon, remixes of canon, or out right not even set in Roswell- to fill every type distance you want from canon- from near to far.
and the howl of the desert carries me home by @christchex/ @michaels-blackhat (4,334) Alex runs into the desert to escape from his father with his guitar clutched to his chest. He plans to spend one last night playing before his father destroys it. Instead, he meets a cute boy with flowers in his curly hair and a lizard on his shoulder. He exchanges a song for a smile.
why i like it: I love everything about this story. Michael is totally a disney princess, and what a lovely way to save him from foster homes, but have him run away to the desert and use his alien powers to build his own little protective world. Looping in Nora’s plant powers like that, giving Michael a little animal friend, I love it all, but the show stealer is Alex Manes, playing music to coax the mystery boy out. It’s just incredibly soft.
***
Heartbeat series by @adiwriting  (133,000 - in progress) During the lost decade, Alex gets Michael pregnant and Michael doesn't see or hear from him again for the next four and a half years. When Alex comes back to town, he discovers he has a daughter with Michael and they all have to figure out how to be a family.
why i like it: it has it all, installments with angst, installments with fluff, I can find whatever mood I am in by just pouring over this incredible series. I really don’t even like mpreg, but in RNM, with aliens it seems a little more probable to me and bless Britt, she goes light on the details but heavy on the kid aspect of it. I absolutely love Alex in this story, he’s richly characterized as a man who is trying hard while wandering unfamiliar territory like aliens, like being a dad, like being Michael’s boyfriend, and he doesn’t always get it right, but he’s loved regardless.
***
tonight we are young @skinsharpenedteeth (8,137) Alex and Michael ditch the Evans' New Years Eve party to find their own fun and Alex gets his New Years kiss...(the underage tag is because they're both 17 in this.)
why i like it: I’m a sucker for teen!Malex, especially stories that take place before the shed. I love this little AU where Alex is thinking about making a move, but hasn’t yet. They are both adorable nervous babies, this feels very much how a softer teen!Malex first time would go. Perfectly characterized here, you can just feel the hopeful vibes they have at 17. I like to believe nothing bad ever happens to them again.
***
you shift on a gear (it’s been a long year) by @backinmybodymp3 (28, 362) “Good morning,” Michael says. “What the hell did you do?” Alex asks, exasperated. (or: There were times, in some of the lower moments of the past however-many-days it’s been, where Michael had thought about what it might’ve been like to share this time loop with someone. He never imagined— well, he never imagined it’d be Alex.)
why i like it: I love time-loop stories! And this is just superb. The friendship dynamics of everyone involved, the Liz/Max wedding, Michael being a good brother, Michael trying so hard to keep this bullshit from dragging Alex in and then Alex being his usual reckless self when it comes to Michael, I absolutely dig this canon-divergent au. you can feel how much the author cares about everyone on the show in this story, and they really nail the Malex dynamic. This story came along just as season 3 did and it’s a true antidote to the malex drought on screen.
***
the library by @arielana (9,657)  Alex had stopped too far away to hear exactly what they were saying, but their voices did carry over to where he was standing. The guy’s drawl had a melody to it that was vaguely familiar, but much deeper than the voice it reminded Alex of. God, that and the hair really brought some memories back.  Just as Alex told himself to stop secretly staring like a creep and walk over there, he turned slightly so that Alex got a glimpse of the side of his face.  Fuck!  Fuck, fuck, fuck! Twelve years ago Alex left Roswell to join the Air Force, nursing a broken heart and promising to never return. When work brings him back to New Mexico he runs into someone he’d been sure he’d never see again.
why i like it: the first kiss in the UFO emporium was groundbreaking, but I have to admit, I love stories that explore the almost-happened, where Malex reconnect as adults without the shadow of Jesse’s attack. I love how sharp Alex is in this story, he has all these walls as an adult built from that first rejection, but then he’s so completely unprepared to reconnect with Michael again. The clownery in this story by both of them is perfect! I also totally love Forrest as a gay best friend for Alex, trying to wingman Alex, that cracked me up.
***
stellar light based life by @jocarthage (30,651) It’s not a memory if it’s something you see every day. It’s a trigger and it’s not one Alex wants to ever let go of.Alex saw Michael disappear into a blinding blue light, soft 17-year-old body pulled back into some kind of impossible vortex -- one hand, outstretched.
why i like it: another submission from 2020 RNM Big Bang, this story just wrecked me. I can’t even really put into words about how it hooked me and basically lives in my head now to the point I often mumble the first line to myself. Anyway, this AU takes a right turn at the shed attack, and goes full force scifi and tragic separation, I love it. In so many ways it reshapes Alex’s life but the core of who he is never changes, there’s so many great science geekery details about Michael’s planet and the astronaut journey that Alex takes, plus SANDERS... anyway, this is a fandom classic for me.
***
Crossed Wires by @beautifulcheat, @ladynox (15,351) Michael's been kicked off more than one Starfleet posting. So when he learned he was reassigned to the USS Roswell, he decided that he would keep his head down and behave. This decision is immediately thwarted when he meets her hot Vulcan captain.This might be the first time Michael got kicked off a posting for flirting with a captain.
why i like it: Star Trek AU? I’m pretty easy. Seeing elements of Kirk and Spock’s tragic backstory blended into genius mechanic Michael Guerin and ice prince Alex Manes was amazing. I love how it’s serving with his family that brings Michael to the Enterprise, his bond with Max and Isobel was chef’s kiss good. The blend of Michael’s powers and Alex’s biology - I loved the balance even if it came with its own misunderstandings, but hey, this time it was cultural! lol
***
I’m still here by @vague-shadows @pippsmcgee  (35,928) Treasure Planet AU in which Michael is the gifted young delinquent who found a treasure map, and Alex is a space pirate pawn in his Father's obsession with riches and legacy.
why i like it: I’ve never seen Treasure Planet, but I didn’t need to thoroughly enjoy this AU. This was the perfect mix of angst and sci-fi adventure, where the authors managed to make the shed even more horrifying. Jesse Manes is the absolute worst in this story, the levels of obsession he goes to find a treasure, and then Michael on his own collision course - the ability to write tense action is a gift, and it’s on display in this story. Cyborg!Alex took up a place in my heart and still lives there, where he only gets the nicest things.
If you like any of these recs, please leave a comment on the story or a kudo- a  ‘this was awesome’ is enough to propel an author into the stratosphere with happiness, so don’t worry about coming up with a unique, never before shared insight- sometimes a keyboard smash and emoji makes all  the difference!
