A massive problem with how fandom - particularly queer rep - is going right now on this website is how quick people are to jump ship onto the next thing and then immediately start trashing the everliving shit out of the old thing.

Steven Universe (not a perfect show by any means) while it was coming out was celebrated constantly. The Garnet reveal? Pearl being in love with Rose? The Rupphire wedding? SU was revolutionary and has been quoted by cartoon creators now for being a big reason people are allowed to bring their stories to life. Say what you want about the show, but it broke boundaries and set precedents for a lot of the shows that you now love. And the show's plot lines regarding the diamonds has been taken in completely bad faith - do yall really think the half Jewish queer person meant for you to get "Let's all forgive Nazis" from the Diamonds redemption arcs??

After Steven Universe ended a large majority of people jumped to She Ra and the Princesses of Power and when they mentioned SU at all it was to put it down as a show with terrible representation and all round bad writing.

During SPOP's run it was massively popular, with a lot of buzz around the main ship, Catradora. I know this is gonna be taken in bad faith so a quick note - while I do like Catradora, I do feel that there should have been another season for Catra to properly acknowledge the harm she did to Adora and actually grow as a person before entering into a relationship. Catra was forgiven too easily, but that was in part due to Netflix not wanting to give the show another season to properly flesh out the redemption arc. The final season was rushed as all hell, and so many story points would have been better with another season to flesh them out further.

But I digress - during the show's run it was constantly talked about for it's representation, having multiple queer characters, including a nonbinary character.

The show ends and again, the fanbase jumps. This time, it's to the Owl House. People start talking about how SPOP was actually horrible representation and, my personal favourite, they "added gay people as a cash grab."

Yeah okay guys, I'm sure a queer nonbinary creator is writing about queer people because they actually dislike the gays and want to wring money out of us. That is definitely the situation here.

And now I'm worried that in a year or two we'll have the next big queer cartoon and the posts will start popping up -

"Amity Blight is the mean lesbian stereotype."

"Raine and Eda's relationship is problematic because-"

"Amity and Luz started out as rivals, which is toxic because-"

"The romance didn't start until later in the show, it was added at the end for a cash grab."

Again, I'm certain there's gonna be bad faith takes on this -- I'm not saying these shows are perfect. They all have flaws somewhere. No media is completely without it's faults and its good to recognise those faults, that what critical reading is. But calling someone an abuser for enjoying SPOP, or a Nazi sympathiser for liking SU (actual accusations I have seen on tumblr.com) is frankly a little ridiculous.

As for the bad rep argument - every show on this list has one thing in common: a queer creator. No one experiences queerness the exact same way - the only thing that harassing queer creators for not showing your experience does is make other queer creators... not want to write queer characters. No one wants to receive death threats because, for example, they based a character with their sexuality off of how that actually affected them and someone on the Internet decided they were feeding into a harmful stereotype.

Little thought on my mind:

So, I'm white. And I've always understood that representation in the media is important, and that everyone should get to see theirself on the screen and in books, all that.

I thought I understood it well enough, because I know the joy I felt watching Catra and Adora kiss on She-Ra, and girls just existing in Moxie. Those were all so important for me, so I could obviously understand how stuff like that would be important for other people, too.

But in English class recently, we were watching a clip from Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. Brown-haired Peter Parker's going on about his life, and his marriage, and it shows him stomping on glass. And my friend and I just whirl around to look at each other because-- if you don't know-- that's a Jewish thing. There's a JEWISH SPIDERMAN.

I'm not sure exactly where I wanted this post to go, but that moment also made me realize how important subtle representation is-- not throwing it in your face, saying, 'see? we represented you!'(not that the previous examples did that). But also how important it is to take well-established, important-to-society characters, and say hey, they're also this. Spiderman's Jewish, or a girl, or African-American. I don't think it's forcing representation on previously established characters, because they're CHARACTERS, and they SHOULD grow and change as time does.

Or at least my fave characters.

The guy with the mic is Sergei Belinsky. He has BPD and is in a queerplatonic relationship with his friend Mikhail, and his dad is also one of the worst people in the world. He used to have sexual feeling for Caleb. (Not a crush, he's aro).

The guy on the floor is Sasha, Morningstar, he's an artist with serious daddy issues, his real name is Alexander Dellville and he's married.

The guy in jail is Caleb O'Lynn, as mentoned previously. He's a communist with even more trauma than all of these people put together, and he's the one Sasha's married to.

The woman praying is Adora Stalevna. She's married to the guy throwing money (His name is Nikolas), her maiden name is Dellville, and she's Sasha's sister. She homophobic and a bisexual in denial.

The guy having a mental breakdown in the background is called Vlad Lee. He's a mix of Crimean Tatar and Chinese (I may have gotten his skin tone wrong), he has social anxiety and he loves to bake.

And I've saved the best for last!

The guy in the bisexual t-shirt is Joshua Nevsky, real name Yeshua Bronstein. He's Jewish, very nervous, and he's dating Nikolas.

(Yes, I know Nikolas is married to Adora, but that was long before he even realized he liked Joshua).

He's a widower and spends most of his time on old fanfiction forums because he loves to look back at the horrendous things he used to write as a kid.

And then there's Nikolas Stal. He's half Indian, half Geogrian, and his name used to be Vazha Borisovich Khurana, but, as you can see, he changed it. He's polysexual, lowkey an anarchist and is trying his best to divorce Adora on the grounds of him being in love with Joshua, but she is adamant that there is no way that he can like Joshua 'because there is no way a person can like more than one gender'.

I told you she was in serious denial.

I've had a lot of fun making this and I hope you like the terrible quality of my art.

things that would absolutely be canon if everyone in shera and the princesses of power was jewish:

- Adora grew up thinking she was just like everyone else, only to find out about her jewish heritage when she gets the sword and starts rethinking her whole life

- Catra knows she's jewish but pretends otherwise and keeps it a secret, telling no one until one night she quietly tells Adora when they're in bed together and Adora swears to keep her secret

- Sea Hawk gets VERY into Purim. he's that one guy on your block who goes ALL OUT. costume, props, decorations, all of it.

- Mermista surprises everyone by getting really into Pesach re-enactments. she's bored all of pesach prep but the instant the seder starts she is the one who makes everyone follow along with the story and makes sure they hit every point.

- Swift Wind is very happy with the prevalence of apples on Rosh Hashanah. he insists on taking a bowl of apples with honey to the other horses.

- Bow and Glimmer have a blast building the sukkah together. Glimmer is able to drop the schach on from above, and they decorate the sukkah within an inch of its life.

- Perfuma is a shavuos gal. she makes the most beautiful plants line the hallways just so, flowering in the perfect places, with trees blooming all over. the flowers and pollen make everyone sneeze incessantly, but everyone agrees that it looks beautiful.

- Double Trouble is the monarch of purim. an entire holiday dedicated to disguising yourself and good-natured trickery? they're on it. okay maybe they take the trickery a little too far but can you blame them?

- Entrapta figures out the best way to build a sukkah, then figures out a better way, and then an ever cooler way, and ends up with like fifteen attempted sukkah projects behind the castle

- Frosta is the best at hiding the afikoman, hands down (she encased it in a block of ice in the freezer). she also finds the story of the makot very entertaining, and insists that Pharoah get punched at some point.

- Scorpia really really loves chanukah. she can't really hold a match or candle because of her pincers, but she adores the food and camaraderie. she wants everyone to sit down for a game of dreidel every single night, and she buys everyone the best, most thoughtful presents.

ok so i hope this doesnt seem like a weird question and u might not really have an answer but in pcybt do catra and adora learn russian and spanish for each other?

this is a wonderful q!!!!!! honestly i always assumed that adora learned a bit of shaky spanish just from being around catra & columbia has a language requirement, so take from that what u will ;-)

as for catra? she probably knows phrases n stuff when it comes to russian & tho i don’t think i specify her undergrad, it’s p likely she had a language requirement as well, but she would definitely look to a “useful” language for her career choice (lawyer & hopefully eventually, politician), so it’s unclear if she ever properly learned russian. but i think she would end up knowing some cause mara & adora might talk abt her in russian and catra would Know cause adoras a terrible actress and blushes So Easily, so she’d at least complete duolingo on it

all this to say maybe! it’s partially up to you regarding how much of the other’s language each girl learns. since it’s not in the fic, keeping it open feels Right. it’s up to you! thank u for such a good question that i wrote so much on lmao
