Opinions of our Horse Trainer
Tumblr media
Twirling the rope in my right hand I held onto the end of the rope with my left. Clicking my tongue I watched the horse quickly running around me in circles. I had been working for the Dutton family for a quite a few months now. Since John Dutton’s youngest son had taken on the position of Livestock Commissioner so they needed someone else to break in the new horses that would come in and I was hired. “Come on, boy. You wanna come at me then let’s go.” I taunted the horse causing the horse to charge at me so I ran climbing up the fence and the horse hit the wooden fence.
“Are you crying to make him want to kick your ass?” Turning my head around I heard a woman’s voice and recognized a girl with her blonde hair. She stood on the outside of the fence wearing a white and grey dress and some heels. “Cause I don’t think you want to piss a horse off sweetheart.”
My hair fell in front of my eyes, and my tan cowgirl hat was close to falling off my head when I was eyeing John's daughter. "You've got to knock the defiance out of him somehow."
"If you say so. I've just decided not to go anywhere near those things...not anymore at least." Beth shook her head at me, pulling out a cigarette.
Swinging my legs over the wooden fence, I climbed back down into the wooden fence, clicking my tongue to get the horses attention again. "Berh, I hate to say this but can you just say what you want to say because I should get back to work here."
"I'm just trying to see what your intentions are with my father." She said quickly before leaving and heading towards the white barn. I saw that John was coming from the barn, but I couldn’t hear their conversation. She smiled at her father. "Hi, Daddy."
John paused in his tracks. "Morning honey, what were you talking with Y/n about?"
"Just trying to see what you see in her exactly." She shrugged her shoulders.
He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Uh! Beth, don't do this. I don't want to have this conversation with you."
"I loved my mother and it just seems odd for you to be with anyone but her. Even though she's dead." His daughter explained hearing footsteps coming towards the entrance of the barn.
John ran his hands down his face, not thinking this was how his morning was going to start. He removed his cowboy hat, running his fingers through his grey hair, finally seeing that it was Kayce coming towards them. "What are you two talking about this morning?" Kayce asked, tugging his horse to a stop in the doorway.
"How dad is trying to sleep with someone else who will never be as wonderful as our mother." Beth rolled her eyes, kicking some dirt with the edge of her heel.
John cursed under his breath. "Shit, Bethany!"
"Beth, I get that you'll still love our mother. But dad should be able to date other women." The youngest son said back.
The Dutton girl scoffed. "Are you serious, little brother!"
"Yeah, I am, sister. Our father should be able to be happy just like he wants us all to be. He shouldn't just be trying to maintain this ranch without having some sort of love life away from all the work." Kayce declared at his sister, wanting her to see his side of things.
She crossed her arms over her chest, letting silence fill the wooden barn for a few seconds. "So what are we just supposed to be okay with this?"
"Yeah, unless it all goes to hell in the end. But let him try and be happy with someone until the day he gets to be with our mother again." Kayce nodded, tipping his hat at the pair walking forward to put his horse in the stall.
John patted his son on the back when he walked past. "Thank you, son." He then walked in the direction of the wooden fence training area to watch Y/n as she had the horse right where she wanted it to be.
Holding one hand on the top of my head so it wouldn't fall off, the horse slowly bowed its head to me. Raising my free hand, I slumped my shoulders, not noticing John just yet. "There you go, boy. You’re a good horse. You'll do just fine now."
"Y/n, he rather likes you. And he certainly ain't the only one." John tells me with a kind smile, leaning his arms against the wooden fence.
Brushing my fingers through the horse's mane he made a noise where I focused my attention back to John. Leaving the horse I leaned my body against the fence sending him a wink. "Are you asking me to dinner, Dutton. I don't quite think you're daughter would like that very much."
John groaned slightly when he began climbing over the fence and dropped down on the other side in front of me. "To be honest with ya, darling. I don't really care what they think. So if you'll go on a date with me then let's just do it and to hell what they think."
Stepping forward I dropped the rope in my hands cupping his face in my hands and kissed him out of nowhere. "To hell with what they say it is then, John." I mumbled before he drew Mr back in for another kiss not bothered by the knowledge that Beth and Kayce were watching.

After the sunset - Lee Dutton (Yellowstone)
The fic i promised like last week!! Whoops but here it is. Not proofread so ignore anything that doesn’t make sense. Requests are open
-
The soft sun peaked through the blinds. Wanting a few more hours of sleep, rolling over when it felt like you hit a wall. Groaning, trying to make more room between you and the wall when you opened your eyes and saw that the wall was your boyfriend. Sound asleep he threw an arm over you, pulling you into him.
“Lee, Lee, get the hell away from me,” muffled in his arms, his grip somehow getting tighter around you. Trying to pry his arms off when Lee finally opened his eyes, groaning. Sleep weighed his eyes, looking into yours, “What’d I do now,” muffled by the pillow.
Burning up as if you were in a sauna. You brushed Lee’s hair out of his face, caressing his cheek while his eyes slowly lowered again, “Nothin baby don’t worry about it.” Lee hummed while you continued to run your fingers through his hair.
Breaking the comfortable silence, “What’s the plan for today cowboy?” Lee sighed heavily before answering you, “ too many things. Got a meeting later with the people who stole my dad’s cattle.” You grimaced at the thought of him going off to meet with people who want him dead. “By the people do you mean Monica’s family.”
“Doesn’t matter who they are, they stole from us and now we have to get them back.” Lee’s groggy voice filled the room. You rolled on top of him, straddling his hips. “Doesn’t matter who or what they took, I just need you back here in one piece.” You leaned down to kiss him. He deepened the kiss, battling for dominance.
Lee broke the kiss, your foreheads touching as your chests heaved, “Be safe, last time you said they shot at you guys. ‘N Lee Dutton if I hear something like that happens I’m done, you’ll never see me again.” You kissed his chest before you laid your head on him.
Feeling a heavy hand caressing the back of your head, “Don’t worry darlin, be here tonight just a little late as usual. I’ll come back crawling to you if that’s all I can do.” He kissed the top of your head, “I’ll come back half dead, always coming back to you.”
Leaning up to kiss him for the last time before your alarms rang. “Don’t make empty promises cowboy.” Getting off of him and heading to the bathroom. “My promises are never empty.”
-
“God damnit Lee! Stay with me” Kayce shouted as he kicked the horse to go faster. Making their way to the chopper, “Dad, Rob-“ John cut him off by getting Lee off the horse. “Help me.” Throwing one of Lee’s arms over their shoulders, Lee’s shallow breathing, legs dragging as the Dutton’s tried their best to get him into the chopper.
“Find Y/n, tell her before the news.”
-
Water droplets on the ground as you looked at the empty bed. Knowing you’ll wake up to him accidentally slamming the door and apologizing. Getting in bed, shutting off the lights and making sure the alarms set for tomorrow, the old clock Lee insisted you used instead of a phone.
Phone ringing on the side table. Seeing it’s Kayce calling, probably calling to bitch about what your boyfriend did, hitting decline and powering it off. Closing your eyes and going to sleep.
Harsh bangs on the front door woke you up. Looking at the clock, seeing it had barely been five minutes since you shut your phone off. More bangs, opening the drawer in the side table, pulling out the gun Lee insisted you learned to use in case of these situations. Moving towards one of the windows, peaking out to see it’s Ryan and Rip.
Gun still in your hand as you unlocked the door. The bewildered men shouted at you to put on your jacket and put the gun down. “Can someone just tell me what’s going on!” Rip threw your jacket at you as Ryan put your shoes in front of you. Ryan made his way out and into the truck. You stared at Rip, waiting for him to say something, “No time sweetheart, explain in the truck, now we gotta go.” Rip said. Throwing everything on, Ryan waiting in the truck as Rip closed the front door behind the two of you.
-
“My god where are we going, you said you’d explain in the truck.” You’re in the back, watching as Ryan and Rip looked at each other. Neither wanting to say anything. 10 minutes is how long you’ve been in the truck and you’re thinking about jumping out instead. Leaving your phone was a mistake, there was a need in you, needing to hear Lee’s voice. Needing to see how he was doing or where he fuck he was.
“Give me a phone, I’m calling Lee and when I get him on the phone he’s gonna have both your asses.” Silence still stood amongst the men. You leaned in to make sure they could see your face. “Rip did you not fucking hear me! I said give me a fucking phone so I can call Lee, might as well call Beth, she’ll get your ass too.” Neither of them so as much flinched at your threats.
Visibly angry you sat back as you realized you were now in town. Speeding the entire way here but Rip’s foot got even heavier, flying through town when you made it to the hospital. Cop cars with their lights on, the personal vehicles of the Dutton family in the front of the parking lot. Ryan turned around to look at you as the truck made a full stop in front. “It’s Lee, meeting went wrong.”
You jumped out of the truck, stumbling as your feet made contact with the pavement. Running in the hospital, the receptionist looked at you with sorrow, reading the scared expression plastered across your face. “I- Lee Dutton where is he.” Fingers tapped on the keyboard in front of her. “ Are you a relative of some sort?” The words tumbled out without a thought, “His wife, I’m his wife.” She looked you in the eyes with a sad smile, “He is currently in surgery on the second floor Mrs. Dutton.” A quick thank you before you made your way to the elevator.
Thoughts raced through your mind as the elevator dinged on the second floor. The Dutton family sitting the waiting room, heads snapped towards the elevator door. Making eye contact with a blood shot eyed Jaime. The tears began falling as you made your over to him. Pulling you into a bone crushing hug, “I’m so sorry Y/n, he’s, he was.”
You could feel your heart drop when Jamie said was. Ringing in your ears as Jaimes mouth continued to move, not hearing a thing. John made his way over to you two. Standing next to Jamie. You cut through the two, heading towards an empty seat next to Beth.
“Can you just tell me what’s going on. Please Beth where’s Lee.” You choked on a sob as Beth’s eyes filled with tears. Taking out a cigarette. You snatched the lighter out of her hand. “God damnit it Beth just tell me!”
“Robert Long shot him over some fucking cattle.” Grabbing the lighter out of your hand before storming out.
You sat in shock, head in your hands as John came over to console you. “He’ll pull through, he’s a tough kid everyone knows it, he won’t leave you like this.”
-
It was hours before someone came and told you guys anything. Lee was alive, breathing on his own, could be seen but only two at a time.
Everyone looked at you and John, signaling you two were the first ones. Making your way to his room. Room 320, stopping right outside of the door. Too scared to go in and see what had become of the man you love. John put a hand on your shoulder, “You don’t need to see him right now, doc says he’ll be asleep for a few hours anyway, go eat something, rest a little.”
“Thank you for the offer but I don’t think your opinion in what I do matters at the moment.” Opening the door to see a pale faced Lee. Hooked up to machines, seeing his heartbeat somehow calmed yours. You moved towards the bed, taking a seat next to Lee, grabbing his hand in yours. You could feel the lump in your throat start to form again. Tears were slowly making their way down your cheeks all over again. You couldn’t be here.
Letting go of his hand and leaving the room. You were met with Jamie standing right outside the door, waiting for either of you to leave. He moved out of your way, calling after you but not following. Once you reached the first floor, asking to use the hospitals phone to call Ryan and get you the fuck out of there.
-
You couldn’t move out of the water. The once hot water that burned your skin was now freezing. Goosebumps filled your body. Feeling guilty for leaving Lee. For not being brave enough to face the situation head on. Leaving with your tail tucked after insulting the man whose son was lying in the hospital.
Your phone had been ringing for two hours now. Getting voicemail after voicemail from Beth. Wondering why the fuck you left. John calling just to check up on you as he put it. Jamie wanting you to come back to help deal with everything. You didn’t want to deal with everything.
Drying off, throwing on sweatpants and one of Lee’s hoodies. Checking your phone again, seeing a message from Beth, telling you Lee had finally woken up.
The front door opening, seeing Ryan standing there,”You have such good timing you know.” He chuckled before ushering you out, “Yeah well, credit goes to Beth, it’s like I can feel her anger through text, come on.” Turing to truck on and heading back to the hospital.
-
Room 320. The bold white letters stared back at you as you tried to go in again. John opened the door, seeing you through the little window. You stood outside in the hallway. Looking at the man you insulted 3 hours ago. “Been asking for you since he woke up. Doc says to not stress him any you know.” You nodded as he left the room. Leaving just you and Lee.
The tip of your nose started to tingle, water filling your eyes again for what seemed the hundredth time today. Except this time you were looking in the eyes of the man you love.
Those big soft brown eyes staring back into yours. Slowly making your way towards him. Carefully sitting next to him, trying to be as close to him as you could without causing any pain. “You’re treatin’ me like I’m gonna break, supposed to be the way ‘round.” He trying his best to put a smile on your face. A tight lipped grin made its way onto your face. You choked on a sob. Lee’s hand wiped the tears that were starting to fall again.
“Told you I’d come back darlin. Would never leave you here, never doing that to you.” Your sobs got louder when he spoke. Inching towards his chest, hearing him wince made you shoot right back up, “I’m sorry I’m sorry I didn’t mea-“ Index finger pressed softly against your lips. “Told you to never say sorry to me, something that’ll never need to happen. Now come here.” Lee moved a little to the side as best as he could. Wedging you between him and the bed guard. Laying down right next to him. Your head slightly resting in the side of his neck.
“Who told you,” Lee asked as you moved closer to his side. It took you awhile to answer him. Still not believing what was going on. Words stumbling out, “Beth.”
Lee hummed, “My sister’s always been great at delivering shitty news.” You let out a humorless chuckle, “Should find someone else to deliver news, she’ll probably start delivering punches instead of the news.” You could feel Lee laughing, “Yeah well it’s always her or Rip delivering something bad, ‘least Beth won’t whip out her flip phone to call you.” You laughed. “Rip and that fucking flip phone, don’t know how he gets Beth going when he whips that thing out.” Lee groaned in disgust as you continued to laugh, “Alright fun’s over, you ruined it.”
Lying in silence, listening to the heart monitor fill the air. Racking your brain to figure out something to say. Lee beat you to it, “Ya gonna leave me now?” A small grin was on his face. Made no sense to you, a man who was on the brink of death a few hours ago was grinning.
You hummed before answering him, “If I leave you now I think Beth’ll beat me up.” Lee silently laughed, agreeing with you, before you continued, “But I’m thinking you deserve one more chance.” Lee nodded his head, tipping his head towards the ceiling, “Thank you, scared me for a minute.” You smiled at his reaction.
Lee turned his head towards you, “Reach into my jacket pocket and pull out what’s in there.” Complying, getting out of the bed, to reach for Lee’s jacket on the chair near you. Grabbing the jacket, sitting down on the bed and searching the pockets when you pulled out a small black velvet box. You looked at Lee with confusion. Lee had the biggest shit eating grin on his face. “Open it.” Opening it to find a beautiful diamond ring, tears flooding your eyes as you stared at the ring, “Now I know this is probably the worst way to propose, in a hospital. I promise I planned everything out, was gonna have Gator make your favorite foods, go ride Ray and Loco after then propose in a field just somewhere out there but then you know this happened and what I’m trying to say is.“
Lee ended his long speech, grabbing your hand as you sat there in shock, looking into his eyes, “Y/n L/n, will you marry me?”

Ch 6 - As When The Summer Days Were Nigh
“I’d known death since I was a child. It’s everywhere. In every form you can imagine. And a few your worst nightmare couldn’t muster. As if death was not the result of accidents and disease, death was its own disease. But it had never touched me. It had never placed its rotten finger on my heart. Yes, freedom has fangs. And it sunk them in me. ” ~ Elsa Dutton 1883
Lorena's hooves pounded against the slope, carrying Kate down into the valley where a few wagons had come to a halt, isolated from the main caravan. Raiders swarmed around them, gunfire echoing in the night as chaos unfolded. With the sun sinking below the horizon, Kate strained to discern the attackers' numbers in the darkness.
Six horsemen emerged from the west, joined by several more riding over the slope from the north. Kate's mind raced as she tried to make sense of the situation. What are raiders doing this far south in the plains? She asked herself, trying to plan a course of action.
They used the cover of night to their advantage, weaving between trees and shrubs, it was difficult to get a clear shot of them. But she witnessed Charles and Arthur spring into action. Their guns blazed as they lit up the night with each round sending orange sparks into the darkness. As Lorena closed the distance, Kate spotted two wagons left behind: one belonging to John and Abigail, and the other a supply wagon driven by Lenny and Sean. She knew the raiders would target the supplies and likely attempt to steal their horses too.
This left the fighting to Arthur, Charles, and Javier. Who turned back at the sound of the commotion. Lenny and Sean leapt into the wagon for cover as they began shooting blind into the night, the horses crying out in fear. Kate couldn't see Abigail, and she prayed she was well hidden in the wagon with Jack. She made headway to his wagon first.
She pulled her rifle from her saddle and called out to John, who was firing round after round from his revolver, doing no good against the fast riding raiders.
“John!” she shouted, catching his attention, he looked down from his seat in the wagon.
“Kate?” He said, taken back by the sight of her, “you need to find cover!” Concern laced his voice.
She ignored his statement, holding the rifle up for him, “take this, it's a better shot. Aim for the shrubs, they're using them as cover.” She urged.
John nodded and took the weapon without hesitation, quickly counting the rounds in the ammunition, “thanks, what will you use?” He asked, already getting in position to take aim.
“Don’t worry about me,” she answered, determination in her voice, “protect your family.”
Lorena brought her around to the back of the wagon and she peered inside, sure enough Abigail was clutching Jack to her breast, white knuckled and face scrunched in silent fear. As if she was hoping this was just a bad dream they would wake from. Jack, trying to be brave, trembled in his mother's arms. Without hesitation, Kate leaped into the wagon, placing a comforting hand on Abigail's shoulder. She startled at her touch, “easy Abigail, it's just me, you need to take this.” She held out her own revolver. Abigail opened her eyes and shook her head with a sob. Kate's heart throbbed at the sight of her.
"I’m not letting go of him!" she cried, her voice quivering with emotion. "When is this going to end?" Her plea carried the weight of past traumas, threatening to overwhelm her.
Knowing they had no time to waste, Kate pressed the revolver into Abigail's trembling hand. She needed a means to defend herself if the worst was going to happen. Jack whimpered at the sounds of gunfire coming from John at the seat of the wagon. She gave him a reassuring look, “be brave for your momma okay? If anybody comes, you shout for me and I’ll come runnin’,” she added with a smile, placing a hand on his little head. He nodded in understanding.
Lorena waited at the back of the wagon as Kate mounted her and took off towards the fray. She needed to come up with a plan, and fast. She gave her firearms to the Marston family. Which left her with only close range weapons. She reached into her saddle bag and pulled out a tomahawk. It had been a long time since she’s used an old weapon of war.
With determination she nudged her mare in the belly and took off. The familiar leather grip of her tomahawk left her with a sense of bitter nostalgia. Memories of an old friend came flooding back, and old instincts she had long buried bubbled to the surface.
In the distance, she spotted Arthur, locked in combat with a raider. His skill and ferocity were undeniable as he dispatched two foes with swift precision. Kate watched, her heart heavy with unspoken truths.
Arthur is wrestling with a giant, Charles' words sounded in her mind. She had faced her own giants, and kept them at bay like a hunter taming a wild beast. She never got the chance to tell him. She would release her giant tonight, and if they survived, she vowed to share her secrets with Arthur, laying bare the depths of her soul.
━━━━━༻❁༺━━━━━
Under the cloak of night, time seemed to stretch endlessly, though mere minutes had passed. The raiders fell one by one, a testament to their careful strategy. It dawned on the others that shooting wildly was futile; they needed to close the gap.
For Kate, the chaos played to her strengths. While she lacked skill with a gun, in close combat, she was unparalleled. The sickening crunch of bone echoed as her tomahawk met the skull of a raider, sending him crashing to the ground. The scene before her, once familiar yet now unsettling, reminded her of the darkness she had left behind. Yet, there was no joy in the violence; only relief that she no longer found pleasure in such brutality.
With only a few foes left standing, Arthur's gaze found hers, his worry palpable. She reassured him with a nod, urging him to focus on the task at hand.
Scanning the chaotic scene, Kate spotted a lone raider sneaking up on John's wagon, his focus fixed on protecting his brother. With a swift movement, she sprang into action.
She hollered to get the man's attention, as well as Johns. It didn't matter who took him down, as long as he was stopped. Closing the distance, she gripped her weapon high, readying for the strike. The raider turned just as Kate swung, narrowly missing his head as a shot rang out. She was unsure if it was John’s or the bandits until pain shot through her side. The man barely squeezed by her horse and the wagon, and took off in the opposite direction. Ignoring the pain, Kate followed.
Arthur joined the chase, and together they pursued the raider. Lorena surged forward, fueled by the thrill of the chase. Leaning down to her horse's ear, Kate whispered, "Feels like old times, huh, girl?" Lorena snorted in agreement. Despite her clingy and skittish nature. She was bred to be a war horse, and in her blood she fought just as savagely as her rider.
She closed in and brought her mare tauntingly close to the last man. With a swift motion she collided the blade with the man's ankle, nearly cutting his own foot off, causing him to fall out of the saddle. He did not reach for his weapon, as he used his last round in an attempt to kill her, instead he lay on his back and put his hands out in mercy.
Kate dismounted and trudged over to him.
“I-I’m unarmed!” He pleaded, “please miss you wouldn’t kill an unarmed man!”
She tossed the tomahawk to the ground and the man eased for a moment, until she pulled her hunting knife out of her belt. His eyes widened and he tried to stand, but his ankle was only holding on by a bit of flesh.
Arthur finally caught up to them and dismounted, “don’t kill him yet Kate, we need to find out who they are. They could be O’Driscolls.” Kate ignored him, the pain in her side igniting into a blazing fire. The metallic tang of her own blood filled her senses, but she pushed past it with a fierce glare.
“Don’t look like an O'Driscoll to me,” she rasped. Fighting the urge to drive her knife into his belly. Echoes of an old mantra rang in her ears, “our job is to ensure our enemies fear is greater than their greed.”
“I-I aint an O’Driscoll, we’re just a couple of horse thieves. That’s all,” the man pleaded, using his forearms to distance himself from her.
The world felt dizzy, her memories of her past began mixing with the present. “That’s all?” She mocked, “you would take these people’s lives,” her voice hoarse, “just for a few horses?” Before he could answer she forcefully kicked him in the belly, hard enough to break a few ribs. The man rolled onto his stomach and spit up blood.
In a flash, Kate mounted the man from behind, gripping a fistfull of his hair and forcefully pulling back towards her chest. She placed the knife at the edge of his throat, Arthur saw the fire in her eyes as she ended the man's life, sickeningly slow.
As she drew the blade over his neck she muttered the words low in his ear, “what you take from the land will be taken from you. Know that I am the land, and the land is killing you.”
As the raider choked on his own blood, Kate dropped his head in the dirt. The wound was not deep enough to kill him quickly. He would asphyxiate for the next several hours, a combination of bleeding out and choking to death. He would teeter on the brink of consciousness, not knowing if he is alive or dead. It was a slow sentence, a merciless one. It was pure torture.
Arthur stood in stunned silence, his gaze fixed on Kate. He had witnessed his fair share of violence, and dealt with his own. But the intensity in her eyes was unfamiliar, unsettling. She seemed transformed, a wildness emanating from her like a primal force.
“I didn’t know you could fight like that,” he said awkwardly, unsure if it was the right thing to say at the moment. He had seen a different side of her. And he had a feeling it was one that she was clearly trying to keep buried. He couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted between them, and he was left grappling with the uncertainty of what lay ahead.
Kate retrieved her tomahawk and mounted her horse, her movements strained with pain. "There's a lot you don't know about me, Morgan," she replied tersely, her usual sharpness replaced by a somber tone. "We need to keep moving," she added, urging her horse forward. She felt sick to her stomach, the pain mixed with rage and shame and fear. A whirlwind of emotions, it had been years since she killed somebody. She vowed to give that life up. And now, she was riding off with a bunch of outlaws. Leaving behind a bloody battlefield. Arthur watched her ride off, a knot of worry forming in his stomach.
━━━━━༻❁༺━━━━━
They rode past Dewberry Creek and down to Clemens Point. A hidden spot on the peninsula of the lake, only a few miles from Rhodes. It was a decent hiding spot. As the last of the caravan pulled in, the members who made it ahead of the chaos came rushing out to greet them.
As Kate was the last to reach Clemens Point, the weight of the recent events hung heavy on her shoulders. She gazed out at the lake, its surface reflecting the dim light of the moonlit sky. A secluded spot on the beach offered a brief respite from the chaos that had engulfed them, and Kate welcomed the solitude.
Dismounting her horse, she felt the exhaustion settle into her bones like a heavy blanket. Her hands, streaked with dirt and blood, trembled slightly as she reached for the saddle buckles. With a heavy sigh, she removed the burden from Lorena's back, the weight of it suddenly feeling unbearable. As Lorena trotted off to the water's edge, letting out a contented sigh as the coolness soothed her weary joints, Kate couldn’t help but chuckle. Perhaps she had pushed her loyal mare a bit too hard today.
Grabbing a brush from her saddlebag, Kate set to work cleaning Lorena's coat, the rhythmic motion a comforting distraction from the chaos that had unfolded. In the distance, she could hear the other members of the gang recounting the night's events, their voices a mix of concern, exhaustion, and celebration.
As a pair of hooves approached, Kate knew without looking that it was Arthur. Dismounting, he joined her by the water's edge, letting Belle cool herself alongside Lorena. "Mind if I join ya?" he asked quietly, uncertainty lacing his voice. Kate nodded in response, and Arthur settled onto the sand beside her, kicking off his boots to let the water lap at his feet.
The air was thick with humidity, and the sounds of frogs and cicadas filling the night. It felt strange to be going back east, but somehow it didn’t bother her that her journey had been interrupted.
After a moment of silence, Kate broached the subject that had been weighing on her mind. "You wanna tell me what happened in Valentine?" she asked, her voice tinged with curiosity and concern.
Arthur sighed heavily, his gaze distant as he recounted the events of the day. "It started with the train job. The law showed up fast, too fast, and we barely made it out of there," he explained. "Cornwall's men nearly killed John the next morning. We made it out, but not without killing half the town.”
Kate shook her head in disbelief, her heart heavy with the weight of Arthur's words. Before she could respond, Arthur spoke again, his voice filled with remorse. "I'm so sorry, Kate. I never wanted to drag you into all this mess. Especially after what Micah did," he added with a bitter scoff. "I don’t know why you turned back."
"I didn't do it just for you," Kate replied after a moment, her gaze meeting Arthur's with unwavering determination. "I did it for Abigail and her boy. From one mother to another." Arthur looked at her, a flicker of surprise in his eyes. He caught the new information, but his heart fluttered at the idea that she turned back for him as well.
“I’ve never seen a woman fight like that, it was,” he trailed and Kate was the one to interrupt this time.
“I know, you don't have to say it. I’m not exactly proud of it,” she looked down in shame.
Arthur offered a warm smile, “I was gonna say it was real brave.”
She smiled sadly and shook her head, “still don’t make it right.”
“It was either us or them Kate, don’t beat yourself up about it,” Arthur reassured her. “You know, I’d understand if you still want to leave. But we could surely use some of that bravery around here.”
Kate nodded and took a deep breath, steeling herself to share something important. “I’ll stay Arthur,” she began, “but, there’s some things I think you should know about me.”
“We all come from different places, your past is your past,” he said sincerely, “If you don’t wanna share that I don’t want you to think ya have to.” Her heart warmed at the gesture, he was being considerate. After everything he saw he would still grant her the privacy of her past, but that wasn't her plan.
“No, I want to tell you,” Kate paused, collecting her thoughts, “I think you’ll understand me better. And after what happened at the Downes ranch, I owe it to you.”
Arthur’s curiosity peaked, the conversation from a fortnight weighed heavy on his mind. And he wanted to know how her story tied into that. His mind already raced with assumptions, after seeing the way she fought he couldn't help but wonder if she was on the run from the law too. Or something worse.
“Alright,” he settled back against the sand, giving her his full attention.  “I’m here to listen, Kate.”
With a heavy sigh, she decided to start from the beginning. “I’ve known death since I was a child. It began with a railway accident in Boston that took my mother and little sister from me, leaving behind my father and older brother. At the time, my father owned a ranch where we raised dairy cattle. He didn’t take their deaths well, and fell into a depression. My brother and I couldn't keep up with the work alone, so we were forced to sell and move. Thankfully, a family friend took us in on their farm. It was there I met my husband, and for a while, we were sweet on one another.”
Kate recalled the memories, her heart flooding with grief, “we lived there a few years. And when my brother was old enough he joined a mining company, and it was another accident that took his life too. It sent my father over the deep end, and so he hung himself in the barn. Like he suddenly forgot he still had a living child.”
Arthur's face softened, understanding the weight of her losses. To him, it sounded like Kate had a proper family—one that truly loved and cared for each other.
“I got married the next year, and finally things felt like they were turning for the better. My husband and I built a little ranch together. In a few years, we welcomed a baby girl into our home.” Her voice choked with emotion. “My life felt as perfect as it could get. I miss my family dearly, but I felt like I was carrying on their memory by starting my own.”
Arthur didn't want to think about where her story was going; it was painfully familiar to him. Kate shifted in the sand, wincing as a sharp pain shot up her side. She had forgotten about the bullet in her flesh. The area had gone numb, and the mixed feelings of grief and searing pain caused tears to stream down her cheeks.
“Lorena didn’t even make it through her first summer before disease took her from me, and as if death couldn't have enough, it took my husband from me too.” Her voice shook with pain.
Arthur sighed, his heart full of sympathy as he observed Kate's emotional turmoil. "Oh, Kate," he said softly, reaching out to comfort her. However, his concern heightened as he noticed the sand around her stained red. "Kate, you're bleeding!" His voice rose with worry.
She nodded, wincing as she reached around her side. "I got shot," she answered, her voice trembling.
"Why didn’t you say anything?" Arthur was already getting up to inspect the wound. "Let me see."
Kate untucked her shirt and lifted it up for Arthur to examine. The bullet had entered just above her hip bone, lodged in the fatty area of her waist. "How bad is it?" she asked, her voice still shaky.
With gentle fingers, Arthur prodded at the wound. It was angry and swollen, and she winced at his touch. He concluded that the bullet was still inside, "the bullet’s still in there, but I think I can get it out. I don't think it hit anything important," he noted, assessing the severity of her injury.
Kate nodded and lifted her shirt further, revealing deep faded scars scattered across her back in the moonlight. “Jesus, Kate,” Arthur muttered softly in surprise. He paused before touching her again, afraid that she might break beneath him like an old clay pot. "What happened?" His voice was as soft as a whisper, fearful of what her answer might reveal.
Closing her eyes, Kate winced once again as Arthur’s hands returned to her wound. “I’ll tell ya once you get this thing out of me,” she replied.
Arthur nodded and, with a gentle hand, held the front of her waist while using his other hand to extract the bullet like it was a cyst, squeezing it out agonizingly slow. Instinctively, she grabbed onto his hand around her waist for support, finding solace in his warmth.
“There, got it,” Arthur said, a hint of pride in his voice as he handed Kate the small pebble that had caused her so much discomfort. “Think of it like a souvenir,” he joked.
“I’ve got plenty of souvenirs,” she mused, tossing the bullet into the lake. Arthur understood she was referring to the scars.
“Come back to my tent,” Arthur suggested, “I’ll stitch you up while you continue to catch me up on the last 10 years of your life.” His tone was playful, an attempt to lighten her mood. Arthur could already tell that her life had been incredibly hard, and seeing the marks on her back only confirmed his fears. Kate nodded, and Arthur helped her walk back to his tent.
To her surprise, the camp was put together rather quickly. Most of the members had settled down around the fire or had gone to bed. Arthur’s things were off to the side of the small clearing, offering him some privacy. His wagon had not been completely unloaded, but there was a cot, as well as a milk crate and an oil lamp. It was no hospital but it would have to do. He gently helped her sit down on his cot while he rummaged through his belongings for the right supplies to stitch her wound. Kate took the opportunity to continue her story.
“Funny thing about this land,” she started, “our constitution says all men are created equal. But I’m a woman, a widow. They tell us our land is free, but what freedom do I have? I cannot own land, can’t take out a loan, can’t purchase anything in my own name. Choices come with freedom, but I had no choices at all.”
Arthur gave her a sympathetic look, he wasn't always proud of his sex. Most of the men in his life were not good role models, and he himself couldn't understand why some men treated women the way that they did.
“I had an aunt in Southern California, I never met her but my father had talked about her growing up. So I wrote to her, in a handful of pages I explained everything. And begged her to let me live with her,” she inhaled sharply as Arthur cleaned her wound with alcohol.
“I was a sorry sight,” she remarked, “I was so terrified to be on my own, and travel across the entire country just to avoid being sent to a nunnery or sold to another man as his bride. I had enough money to get me to Virginia, and after that I had to find my own way.”
In the dim light Arthur sat crouched on the ground beneath her while Kate sat in his cot. She looked down at him, working diligently and so tenderly to clean her wound as painless as possible. His gaze was fixed and intent while he worked, but Kate knew he was taking in every word she said.
“So I joined a caravan that was heading west to Arizona. I figured they could at least get me close enough. Only problem was they were all German, and had very little knowledge of how to travel across the American west," Kate said with a bitter chuckle, “there were a few ranchers that came with us, and we tried to teach them what we could. Most of them couldn't even ride a horse!” She exclaimed.
Arthur blew out a breath, “oh they were doomed from the start.”
“It started with 72 of us, and we began to lose people as soon as we hit the Appalachian trail. Their carelessness became contagious; sickness and snakes, bad horses and poison berries. But of all the perils awaiting us, there was one word so feared it was barely spoken and barely whispered… the river.”
Arthurs blood went cold. He couldn’t imagine the fear and terror as innocent families were ripped apart by dark waters. Punished simply for seeking a better life. The land was more merciless than any outlaw he knew. He noticed Kate relax under his touch, he worked gently as he ran the pad of his thumb over the flesh of her scars. Small bumps and lines, like tiny mountains in a cartography map. Like these scars mapped her history. Where she stood tall and brave in the face of danger. He admired her, being young and alone in this world was terrifying. He knew that feeling well.
“The Kanawha river nearly took all of us that day. We came out the other side with barely 15 people,” Kate shook her head at the memory, “I thought we had seen the worst. But it was only the beginning, Arthur.”
He looked up at the sound of his name, her voice trembling with fear. Their eyes locked and he saw a broken girl looking back at him. They shared a silent moment of understanding. He had heard stories from Appalachia, it was something a child could not muster even in their worst nightmares. Reaching for her arm, he squeezed her gently, “Kate,” he said softly, like he was crooning a baby, “you don’t have to tell me if the memories hurt.”
Warmth spread over her cheeks as silent tears fell, her heart was in her throat. It had been so long since she talked to someone about it. For the first time in years she felt like Arthur was the only person truly seeing her.
“We had crossed into Lakota hunting territory,” she continued, “there was a feud over the land between the tribe and the Virginia government. But it didn’t matter for us, the Indians came anyway. They killed all the men, leaving only myself and two other girls. I couldn’t do anything but watch it happen. I was no use with a gun and I had no idea where to go. So they took me.”
“And I knew I was going to die.”

The Rancher and the Pilot PT. 3 (maybe final)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairings: Jake Seresin x Dutton!Reader
Warning: Language, fighting, Beth being a bad bitch, talk of past trauma.
Also in this Lee didn’t die because I said so!
Y/n looked at Jake with angry sad eyes “There is so much more to life than that Hell Jake.” She said as she began putting her clothes back on Jake following her actions. “What do you mean? I thought things on the ranch were getting better.” He questioned as he finished buckling his jeans. “They are, but now that daddy is governor we are under a heavy watchful eye. I mean Rip and I can’t even take someone to the fucking train station without being followed.” Y/n said frustrated pulling her boots back on. “Come on let’s head back inside before they realize we disappeared.” She said grabbing Jake’s hand and pulling him out of the truck. “Plus I already talked to daddy and he agreed it was time for me to get out of Montana for awhile. He also said that being with you in fighter-town would definitely be best.” Y/n said smiling causing Jake to smile knowing that this meant her father wasn’t going to kill him now that he knew. Jake laughed spinning her around. “Ok so does this mean you are coming back with us once leave is over?” Jake asked smiling his million dollar smile. “Yeah I already have some bags packed and I was given permission to take my ranch truck, I know how y’all feel about flying in planes y’all can’t control.” Y/n responded as she leaned up kissing Jake happily. They separated when they heard a fighting commotion come from inside right as Beth burst through the door holding a blonde woman by her hair. “Hey baby sister a little help in here?” Beth said before slamming the blonde’s face into the door then leaving her there and walking back in. The two followed and were surprised to see people trying to break up the fight going on in the middle. They weren’t still long as one woman ran up to attack Jake, but before she could Y/n grabbed her arm spinning her around and slamming her on her back and commenced to beating to fuck out of her. That was all she really remembered while she and Beth were both being put into the back of the police Tahoe. “So…what happened Bethie?” She questioned her big sister that practically raised her. “Some California bitch put her hands on Rip and then came over and told me that they were gonna leave and have some fun with or without me.” Beth said in a straight voice before looking at her sister and both of them laughing hysterically. “Nice hits by the way. Those girls didn’t know what to think when you started beating the shit out of their friend.” Beth said as they both finally calmed down. “Hey Bethie? How are we gonna explain this to Daddy?” Y/n said as she looked at her sister with all seriousness. “You don’t worry your pretty little head about that ok? I’ll take care of it and I’m sure Jaimie is already working on making this all disappear.” Beth said looking at her baby sister who wasn’t a baby anymore she was now a 30 year old woman that had seen a lot of shit in her time on earth. From being kidnapped, shot at, stabbed, and blown up. Beth really didn’t know how her sister was still alive. All she did know was that her sister was one strong motherfucker
After booking they were both put in a cell and made small talk with another woman in there. After a bit they were both bailed out and on their way back to the ranch. “I still can’t believe that happened and that bitch didn’t get arrested.” Beth said walking into the house meeting the eyes of several people including: the Aviators, some of the ranch hands, her other siblings, and their father. “Well why does everyone look so surprised to see us?” Y/n said as she took Jaimie’s whiskey out of his hand. She then walked back over to Beth. “If I remember correctly I made you both promise to stay out of trouble tonight.” John Dutton finally spoke he stood and walked over and stopped in-front of his daughters. Before smiling and walking away to his bedroom. Kayce then stood and walked to Y/N. “You had to date one of my best friends?” He said smiling at his younger sister. “What can I say? He’s the one for me Kayce.” She said looking up at her big brother. “Ok as long as you’re happy than I’m happy.” He said wrapping her in a hug.
“Actually before everyone goes to bed Jake and I have an announcement.” Y/n said as she held her hand out for Jake to hold as he came to stand beside her. “After tonight I will be stepping down as head cowboy. Rip congrats you get to boss these ass hats around.” She said as she smiled at her group of close friends and family that were all family at this point. “ What do you mean your stepping down?” Ryan asked sharing a confused look with Colby. “I mean I will no longer be able to run things for the ranch from fighter-town. I am going to take a least a year off and start my new life with Jake. Yes we will pop in for the Holidays, but I really need to get out of here for awhile.” Y/n said looking at one of her best friends. “I love you all. You guys will be fine without me. Rip is just as much of a hard-ass as I am if not more.” She said laughing poking fun at her brother-in-law who smiled at the comment.
————————Time Skip———————
The next morning they had everything packed into the truck. Everyone was saying their goodbyes. Y/n looked around knowing she was gonna miss her home in Montana. She also knew that it was time to move on. “Hey you ok?” Her father asked coming to lean on the truck beside her. “Yeah I’m just thinking about how nice it’s gonna be not to hear Lee snoring from the other side of the hallway, how I won’t have to hear Jaime bitch about everything, how I won’t accidentally walk in on Beth and Rip anymore, or Kayce and Monica for that matter.” She said looking looking at her father. John laughed and pulled his youngest child his absolute pride and joy into a bear hug. As they pulled back he handed her something. It was her mother’s necklace that her father had given their mother a few days before her death. “Dad…are you sure?” She asked looking up into her fathers eyes. “She would want you to have just as much as I want you to have it.” He said leaving no room to argue. She handed it to him and turned so he could clasp it for her. It was a simple necklace a thin gold chain with a ruby in the middle and tiny white diamonds surrounding it. After it was on she turned around and bear hugged her father again “Thank you for everything. There were times when you could have given up on all of us kids and you didn’t. So thank you daddy thank you so much.” Y/n said with tears in her eyes. All of the other Dutton children stood in a group watching the interaction knowing that after the youngest Dutton was gone he wouldn’t want to talk about it. Everyone finished their goodbyes and the group of aviators loaded into the truck and waited for Y/n to finish her group hug and goodbye with her siblings. After she was done she loaded up and looked at her boyfriend and his friends and smiled. “Alright…let’s head out. Goodbye Yellowstone, Hello Fighter-Town.” She said as they started the drive.
Trying to decide if I want to continue the story, or start a new one.

Steady Heart
Chapter 35: Bad Ju-Ju
* Pairing: Slow-burn Kayce Dutton x OFC Stella Daniels
* Rating: M
* Warnings: language
* Word count: 3,195ish
I would love to give credits to @dameronscopilot and @deanscroissant for being sounding boards for me during this whole process, giving outsider insight, being cheerleaders, and allowing me to screech at them about things that have happened during the writing process. I seriously couldn't have gotten this far without y'all.
Author's note: I hope everyone is enjoying so far! I hope you love this chapter as well!
Tate stood on the fence the next morning and watched his dad train Lucky some more. “Are you gonna ride him today?”
“Probably not today, buddy.” Kayce stepped closer to his son.
“Tomorrow?”
“Can’t be in a hurry with horses, buddy.”
“The day after tomorrow?”
Kayce laughed at his son’s impatience and looked over to Stella standing over by the run up area. They smiled at each other and he went back to running the horse around the ring.
Stella heard footsteps crunching in the gravel behind her. John’s voice came from her right. “Spend most days wonderin’ why I bother, then see something like that, and it all comes back to me.” He paused. “So, what’s going on here?”
“Whattaya mean?”
“Between you and my son.”
“Oh,” Stella chuckled. “We decided to give it the old college try.”
“So that’s why my grandson has been spending time with me.” Stella felt her cheeks heat up. “I can’t have that cloud your judgment when it comes to helping him like I asked.”
She leaned sideways on the fence to face him. “I know, John. Trust me.”
“I do.” He observed her peaceful manner. “How’re you doin’ after the other night?”
“I’m okay for the most part. Trying to settle with myself that if I hadn’t done what I did, I would be the one that’s dead.”
“I’m proud of you.”
Her eyebrows shot up her forehead. “For what?”
“Handling it. Stepping up.”
“Thank you, sir.”
“This new role looks good on you.” He grinned at her and spotted Rip walking to the arena.
Stella saw the lead wrangler at the same time and sprayed gravel behind her as she took off. “Rip!”
“Easy easy easy,” he pleaded with her coming in hot.
Stella skidded to a halt in front of him and placed her arms around his neck standing on her toes. “I’m so glad you’re alive.”
“Me too, Stella-belle.” She let him go, dropping back onto her feet.
“You’re supposed to be in bed.” John joined them in the alley walk up.
“Shit, I’ve slept more in the last two days than I did all last year.”
“Just take it easy.”
“I will.”
“You better,” Stella threatened from beside him.
“Or what?”
“Or I’ll make you regret even coming out here.” The men chuckled at her seriousness. “You think I’m kidding?”
“No, Stella. If there’s one thing I think, it’s not that.” Rip laughed.
When they reached the pen, Kayce continued running Lucky. Rip leaned against the fence and groaned.
“We’re startin’ to have a few too many things in common, big fella.” John mentioned to Rip.
“You got any more of them pain pills left over? If I take anymore banamine I’m gonna fuckin’ whinnie.”
Stella laughed, but it was cut short when she spotted Beth coming down the hill. “Sir,” she nodded to the hillside.
John followed her line of sight and looked back at Rip. “Thank you. I mean it.”
“I know you do, sir. I know.”
John stepped to the side and Stella trailed after him. She figured she would leave Rip and Beth be. John asked Kayce, “you close to bein’ done there? Need a word.”
Kayce saw Stella next to his dad and moved closer. “Well, we were just gettin’ started.”
Rip patted his boss’s arm as he weaved in between John and Stella. “You know what, I’ll take care of him sir, all right?”
John warned his trusted right hand, “I said easy.”
“Yeah well, Tate will look after me, won’t you Tate?” He tapped the boy on his arm. “Go on, run over there.”
“I’ll help him, sir.” Stella offered.
“No, I need you over here.”
Her eyebrows rose for the second time that morning. She trailed behind the men as they got further from Tate and Rip. They paused at a lower fence and John looked around carefully before going into detail.
“The Becks have their own plane.”
“Those slimy motherfuckers.” Stella said, disgusted. Kayce locked eyes with her around his dad.
John caught his son’s gaze. “Is that useful information to a soldier?”
“Where is it?” Kayce asked.
“Private airfield in Billings.”
“Yeah. It’s useful.”
“Then use it.”
“How much do you wanna know about it?”
Stella felt like she shouldn’t be here for this part. “How much should I know about it?”
“For this? You should know everything.” She nodded to him.
Kayce formed a plan. “Set a meeting. Somewhere too far for a man with a plan to drive.”
“It needs to happen where we can control it,” Stella offered locking eyes with her best friend.
Kayce did the math quickly in his head and determined a place for his father to set up. “Set the meeting in Jackson Hole. They’ll fly right over us.”
“Alright.”
“Dan Jenkins has an SF guy working for him.”
“Yeah I met him.”
“I’m gonna need his help on this.”
John shook his head. “I don’t know, Kayce. I dunno.”
Stella defended Kayce’s idea. “With him involved, Dan can’t use our plan against us, John.”
Kayce interjected. “I just want this whole thing to be over.”
“I don’t know that this game’s ever over, son.” A solitary crow cawed from their left. Stella locked onto it sitting about five feet away, and dread crawled up through her belly.
In the lodge, Stella flitted around the house anxiously cleaning the rest of the day. Kayce came to watch from the bedroom door. She’d already done the dishes, cleaned the counters, mopped the floors, picked up and separated laundry, folded blankets, cleaned the bathroom, remade the bed; which he’d never seen her make any bed she’d slept on. Ever.
“Stella.” Her head snapped to him. “What’s wrong? Remember what we talked about?”
“I’m not keeping it from you. I’m just trying to figure out what I need to say.”
Kayce stepped into the main room and made his way to her. He wrapped his arms around her. “Just breathe.”
A wave of calm washed over her brain, and she felt her thoughts line up. She pulled back to look up at him. “I’ve got a terrible feeling.”
“About?”
“This whole situation with Malcolm. He attacked your livelihood, your sister, me. What’s next? He’s evil.” She cuddled her arms in between her and Kayce and looked down at her hands.
“Don’t think about what’s next because you know what’s next. We’re gonna set him up, and he’ll fall.”
Stella groaned. “But we don’t know who’s working for him because he’s clearly not the type to get his actual hands dirty and destroy his precious reputation. So how do we know what they will or won’t do for him? How far they’ll go?You know what I mean?”
“I do, but we’ll take care of it as it comes. Like we always do.” He pulled her back into a hug.
A loud knocking at the door startled them. “Kayce.” John’s voice floated through the wood. Kayce let Stella go and headed for the door.
John knocked again. “Kayce, it’s me.”
Kayce pulled the door open and took in his dad’s appearance. “Where you headed?”
“Is Stella with you?” She peeked around his son.
“I’m here.”
“Hop in the truck. I need to get Jamie. Stella, make sure you’re armed.”
She and Kayce frowned at each other. “I’ll meet you at the truck. I gotta get my gun from my car.”
They left the lodge and Kayce headed toward the truck, but made sure he had an eye on Stella the whole time. Her Subaru wasn’t far from where the truck was, so it wasn’t hard. Kayce hopped into the front seat and watched her through the windshield.
She moved quickly but skittish. Almost like she was waiting for someone to jump out from the shadows. He had never seen her this freaked out. He didn’t blame her, of course, especially after the events of the last few weeks. She looked like she was holding her breath. Her jaw remained tight and her eyebrows furrowed. Kayce knew her mind was racing in a million different directions; processing taking lives, being attacked, diving further into his family’s bullshit. He didn’t have any doubt in his mind that she knew she was safe with him, but there was something hovering over her that Kayce wasn’t sure even Stella could explain. He wished there was something he could do to ease her mind.
She opened the white Subaru’s passenger door and opened the glove box. Her pistol sat there in its holster, reloaded from the other day’s events. Stella shut the white door and made her way to the truck. She fussed with her belt to get her holster on. She undid her belt and slipped the holster along it until it reached her right hip.
As she approached John’s truck she hopped into the backseat behind Kayce. “Do you know what this is about?”
Kayce eyed his dad getting closer to the vehicle. “I’m afraid to guess.”
John got in the truck with a groan. Stella watched Jamie come out of the bunkhouse, swinging his jacket on. He pulled the door open where Kayce sat and looked spooked. He then tried her door.
Stella smiled. “Hey Jame. Other side.” He saw her holster and he looked even more panicked.
They drove along in silence until they reached a security guard box outside of the reservation. It was the place they planned the construction to build the new casino with Dan. Jamie breathed heavily every few minutes.
The cop lights lit up the inside of the car and Jamie looked around. “What is this?”
John turned to face him. “You’re a lawyer tonight.” Jamie’s body crumpled in relief. “Where’d you think I was takin’ ya?”
Stella giggled from behind Kayce. Jamie glared at her. “I’m sorry.” She cleared her throat. He must have thought they were making a trip to the train station. They climbed out of the truck and made their way over to Officer Waters and Sheriff Haskell arguing about who the jurisdiction belonged to.
Kayce put his hand on her elbow. “Back here for a minute.” She huffed, but listened to his direction. She caught sight of the bullet hole in the poor security guard’s head and her mind flashed back to the other night. She gripped Kayce’s forearm tightly.
He whispered, “you okay,” as he leaned closer to Stella to give her some semblance of safety from her own mind.
She gulped. “Yeah,” she mumbled while she stepped closer to him.
Jamie watched the interaction with curiosity. It wasn’t out of their norm, but the way they leaned toward each other was different.
Donnie walked over to John and shoved his hands in his pockets. “I’ll be damned if this doesn’t look like you.”
Stella rolled her eyes at his accusation. Mumbling under her breath to Kayce and Jamie, “this motherfucker always has something to say.” Kayce nudged her, giving her a side eye. “What? It’s true. He did this with Rip and I too.”
John defended himself. “This wasn’t me, and you know it.”
“I’m not sayin’ it was you. I’m saying it looks like you. You’ve been real clear about how you feel about this casino.” Donnie stopped talking as Thomas came to join them.
“Oh we know who did it.” Thomas stated. He glanced between John and Donnie. “Witnesses?”
“No.” Donnie answered. “No evidence other than the bullet hole in his head.”
“So now an investigation.” Thomas prompted Donnie.
“Yeah.”
“That halts construction.”
Donnie sighed. “Look, I know them. And they are not gonna wait around for a reaction. They’re already plannin’ what’s next.”
Stella leaned close to Kayce, facing away from the group of leaders. She whispered through her teeth. “I told your dad months ago during that bear problem, that Donnie was full of shit, he knows more than he’s letting on.”
“Wait.”
Her eyebrows shot up. “Don’t you—,”
Kayce interrupted her. “Stella not now.” She took in his flat face and decided now wasn’t the time. The words she heard next from Donnie made her nauseous.
“I highly recommend you make a public statement saying that you’re halting the construction on your own. Even that’s not gonna stop him, but it’ll slow him down and give you time to figure out a move. Cause right now, you don’t have one.” Donnie pointed at John. “And he’s gonna take a swing at you next.”
“He already took one.” He locked eyes with Donnie.
“Twice.” Stella interrupted with a deadly sounding tone. She was still pissed about almost being kidnapped or killed.
“John, you need to watch out here cause there’s another one comin’. If he sees deputies outside your place, it’ll be me he’s after next. I can get state police—,” John interrupted him.
“Nothing would please me more than them comin’ on my ranch. I’ll leave the gate open.” John marched back over to his sons and Stella.
Stella jumped at the chance to talk to John and didn’t hold back. “I told you he was full of shit and now it turns out he’s fuckin’ buddy buddy with the bastards!” Kayce grabbed her arm to slow her attack down. “Why does he know so well how they’ll move?!”
John stared at her and waited for her to stop. “We’re takin’ care of this right now.”
John made a call to Malcolm to set up the meeting. John, Kayce, Jamie, and Stella hopped into the truck. “Kayce, you’re going with Dan’s man tonight. Be ready.”
When they pulled into the ranch, Stella stopped Kayce on his way to lodge. “Hey,” she grabbed his arm. “I’m sorry for earlier. And it doesn’t matter now. Just please, be careful tonight. I’ll keep an eye on Tate.”
He didn’t bother looking to see who was around. He leaned down quickly and laid a kiss on her that she swore stopped her heart. When she pulled back, she could feel eyes on her and Kayce. She looked to the side and John and Jamie stood there unsure of how to proceed. It was a new sight for both of them.
Kayce pulled her focus back to him. “I’ll come home. Just have Tate in bed by 10, please.”
“Yeah.” She was still breathless. She walked in the opposite direction, past John and Jamie, ignoring them. She wanted to get her brother to see if he would come stay with her while Kayce was gone.
She went inside and the bunkhouse was calm. “Hey Ry,” she called out for her brother.
He poked his head around the corner. “Yeah Stellee?”
“Kayce’s gotta take care of some stuff. Would you mind keeping me company while I watch Tate?”
He could read the message that she didn’t want to be alone loud and clear. He smiled fondly at her. “Of course.” He disappeared around the corner to finish whatever he had been doing.
Jamie came in and stared at her. He stood next to her. “So that was new.”
“Yeah.” She nodded. “It’ll take some gettin’ used to.”
Jamie smirked. “You sound like him.”
Stella glared at him, hoping it took away from the blush that crept up her neck. “Shut up, Jamie.” They shared a chuckle. Jamie continued by her and started to take his jacket off and settle in.
Ryan strode around the corner and grabbed for his jacket. “I’m ready when you are.”
“John’s bringing him down from the big house. So head for the lodge.” Stella directed him while she stood. They exited the house and began their adventure to Kayce’s place.
It was quiet. Which wasn’t out of the ordinary for them, but Stella needed to tell someone else. “Ry?”
“Yeah?”
“I've got a really bad feeling about all of this.”
He tripped over his own feet a few times not used to hearing her so unsure and stared at her. “What do you mean?”
“I just have a feeling this Malcolm thing is gonna bite back harder than we anticipate.” She glanced at him. “Which is partly why I don’t wanna be by myself with a nine year old to protect.”
“You’re also still spooky from the guys following you, aren’t you?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, I’ll be in the lodge until Kayce comes back.” He scratched his neck and thought about how to tenderly ask the next question. “Speaking of him, have you two had a chance to talk?”
“We have.” Stella stopped walking when she spotted John’s truck in front of the lodge. She didn’t want Tate to catch wind of the conversation.
Ryan crossed his arms as he came to a stop. “Did you guys figure it out?”
“We did. We’re gonna give it an actual try instead of just hooking up and ignoring the topic.” She cringed as she admitted that to her brother. “We actually had a productive talk about expectations and such. I promise.”
He took a moment to breathe. “Okay. The second he pulls any dumb shit, I’ll kill him.”
Stella smiled at his overprotective nature. “Okay, brub,” she chuckled. John walked around the back of his truck looking in their direction.
The sibling pair made their way over to their boss. “If you two need anything, just call me.”
“Okay, sir. He’ll be just fine.” Tate bounced around the truck to them and Stella laughed. “Won’t ya bud?”
“Yeah it’s gonna be awesome!”
“And before you know it, your daddy will be back.” Stella told him with a soft smile.
“Grandson, run inside. I need to speak with them.”
“Okay!” He took off for the door and raced inside, excited for his sleep over with his dad later.
“Thank you for watching him tonight. I know Kayce’ll like coming home to him. I packed a toothbrush from my house for him.”
“Thank you, sir. I used my last one for him a couple months ago.” Stella laughed through her nose. “Oh, did he eat earlier?” Ryan smiled fondly at her maternal instincts coming to the surface.
“Yeah, I had Rip make sure he ate. You two be safe, and keep my grandson safe.”
“Yessir!” Stella grabbed the bag from John’s hand and headed into the house to get Tate ready for bed.
Ryan walked in behind her and he and Tate watched her set to work. She went into the bedroom and placed his bag on his dad’s dresser. She pulled out some pajamas for him. “Tate! Come get a shower buddy.” She heard a little groan from the living room. “You’re gonna hate me even more when I tell you to brush your teeth.”
“Oh c’mon! You’re supposed to be cool!”
She came to stand in the door. “Hygiene is cool, little dude. C’mon. Ryan and I will be right out here if you need anything.”
She plopped down on the couch next to her brother with a sigh. She was ready for sleep. She closed her eyes to enjoy the silence. Well the sound of the shower running, and the silence. The past few days had taken a lot out of her.
“You’re gonna be a great mom, you know that?”
Her eyes shot open at Ryan’s observation. “I’m sorry, what.”
“You heard me.”
“I dunno about all that, now.”
“Don’t you want kids?”
“I do, but I still got time. I’m not thinking about that for a while. I’m not gonna make him run for the hills just yet.” She laughed sleepily. “Do you?”
“If it happens, it would be nice.” He shrugged. “If it doesn’t, I won’t be broken over it.”
“I, for one, know that I would absolutely thrive with little yous running around for me to wrangle.” She smiled wide and her dimples cut into her cheeks.
“Well, it’ll happen for us one day.”
Stella leaned against Ryan’s shoulder and listened to the shower turn off. She groaned and stood. She went to the bedroom door to call out to Tate, “you good bud?”
A muffled, “yeah,” came from behind the bathroom door.
“Don’t forget to brush your teeth, mister!”
“I’m gonna do it right now!”
Stella and Ryan jumped awake on the couch to the sound of the front door. Both of them grabbed their pistols and pulled them up, aimed with deadly precision at the intruder.
The silhouette in the door held up their hands. “Woah, it’s me!”
Hearing Kayce’s voice made her sigh out in relief. “Thank god.” She popped the safety back on and holstered it as she stood. “I’m still jumpy, I guess. Even more so, since I was responsible for your youngin’.” She jutted her thumb behind her to the bedroom door.
He met Stella across the floor and gave her a quick peck on the cheek. “Thank you for getting him to bed.” He flicked on the light seeing that the door was closed to the bedroom and wouldn’t bother his son. He spotted Ryan on the couch as he took off his hat and hung it with his jacket at the door. Kayce glanced at Stella in curiosity. “You needed help?”
“No, Tate was fine. I just didn’t want to be by myself. Like I told you, I’ve got a bad feeling about all of this.”
Kayce walked over to her and wrapped her in an embrace. “It’s gonna be okay.”
She returned the hug and said into his chest. “I hope you’re right.”
Ryan rose from the couch. “That would be my cue. Sleep tight, Stellee. I’ll see you in the morning for winter prep, yeah?”
She looked out from Kayce’s arms. “Yeah, I’ll see you in the mornin’.”

Jamie Does Rodeo - A Crackfic
Tumblr media
Summary: An argument with Beth and an unexpected helping hand from Jimmy leads Jamie Dutton to some very questionable decisions.
Warning: Drinking, violence (no gore though), abuse and lots of profanity. Because Beth lol.
Chapter 1: A Not-So-Empty Threat
Clink!
Ice cubes ratted and whiskey sloshed as Beth Dutton's glass hit the table. Lord knows how many shots she'd had by now.
The woman was thoroughly pissed off. She was pretty sure the ranch was completely screwed, since her brother made a terrible mistake...
...he'd misplaced the deed to the ranch.
"The fuck do you want?" Beth demanded, shooting him a death glare as he stepped into the living room.
"Just letting you know," Jamie Dutton shot back passive-aggressively, smirking as he adjusted his suit and tie. "I was able to find the deed to the ranch, so your attempts at insulting me all week have been pointless."
"Oh, it's never pointless," She warned him, her tone lowering into a hiss. "You lost the deed to the fucking ranch...Everything we've been fighting for."
Jamie was unfazed. "I did not lose it, I borrowed it to back up our case against the developers trying to build an airport over our land, left it in my office drawer, forgot I put it there, and found it."
He pulled out the deed and shook it a few times, as if taunting her with it.
"Thank you for the very, uh, productive conversation." He then said sarcastically, and walked out the door.
Jamie had more important matters to attend to--namely, finding John, and letting him know the deed had been found. Since John wasn't at the lodge, the lawyer decided to check the Bunkhouse instead; maybe John had gone there, to speak with the cowboys.
However, just as he was walking toward the Bunkhouse entrance, Beth caught up to him, grabbing his shoulder and whipping him around to face her. Jamie jumped.
"You think you're gonna get away with this, don't you?" Beth breathed, threateningly locking eyes with him.
Jamie swallowed.
"Beth-" He hesitated, voice trembling. "I found it."
"Yeah?" She quietly mocked him. "You think that's gonna make it all better? You think daddy's just gonna forgive you, because you found it, you piece of shit? You lost it. The family's entire legacy was in your hands and you fucking lost it."
"B-Beth-"
Before Jamie could respond, his sister pressed her palm against his mouth, gagging it shut.
"I want you to listen to me, Jamie," She half-whispered as Jamie's eyes widened with terror, a sadistic smile crawling across her face. She motioned toward a clear patch of land where the cattle grazed. "Tonight, after dinner...you're gonna meet me in the field back there...and I'm gonna beat the crap out of you."
Jamie tried to back away, but Beth yanked the sleeve of his suit, forcing him in place. He could tell she was serious.
"I'm gonna beat the crap out of you...until you're lying on the floor...with every fucking bone in your body broken."
He couldn't answer. All he could do was stare back at her, heart pounding and hands trembling.
"Ya got that?" She hummed.
Jamie remained silent.
"JAMIE."
Frantically, he nodded.
After dinner.
The field.
Got it.
An agonizing few seconds later, Beth released him, sending him tumbling backwards. One more murderous stare into his soul, and she took off toward the lodge, finally leaving him alone.
"God damn it..." the lawyer hissed under his breath after a moment of hyperventilating. "AAAGHH!" In a fit of rage, he punched the nearest fence, the sting of gnarled wood cracking against his fist.
Shoving his face into his cupped hands, he began letting out an agonized groan, until suddenly, he heard someone speaking right behind him.
"Wow." The voice said, lost for words. "I've never seen anything like that. She's terrifying. Like, actually terrifying."
Jamie turned around, and there, watching from beside the Bunkhouse entrance, was Jimmy.
The lawyer shuffled his feet, a deer-in-the-headlights look on his face. "How, uh, how long have you been there?" He stammered.
"Oh, yeah, I saw everything," Jimmy smiled, seeming almost impressed by Beth's fury. "I came out here to train for the rodeo tonight, but..." he chuckled, speechless. "Guess I came at a bad time".
Instead of responding, Jamie sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, a migraine headache overcoming him.
Jimmy's cheerful grin dropped. All jokes aside, he understood Jamie's plight; he knew what it was like to be threatened. He'd never have started doing rodeo to begin with, if his former criminal partners hadn't threatened his family.
The young cowboy approached Jamie and put a hand on the his shoulder. Behind him, the chestnut horse he was planning to practice rodeo with kicked up dust, racing across the nearby riding ring. "What are you gonna do?" He asked the lawyer.
Jamie shook his head over and over again like a caged animal. "I-I don't know. I DON'T KNOW, I DON'T FUCKING KNOW!" He shouted through gritted teeth.
Jimmy was silent for a moment, gears turning in his head. He stared off into space for a few more seconds before reaching a conclusion.
"What if you come with me tonight?" Jimmy offered.
"What?"
"What if you come with me tonight?" He repeated, motioning toward the angry horse in the pen. "To the rodeo. I mean...think about it. Why do you have to be at the ranch tonight? You don't have to stick around and let Beth kick your ass." Jimmy gave Jamie's shoulder a friendly pat. "You can just come along with me and Lloyd. You can help me get ready before I enter the ring, you know? Just brush the horse, take care of the saddle, all that stuff. It'll be like an excuse to leave."
Huh.
The rodeo...
Jamie hadn't thought of that.
It all made sense...
He could ignore Beth. He could blow her off. Get away from Yellowstone entirely...
Yeah...yeah!
Fuck this!
Why not go to the rodeo?
Hadn't he done enough for this family? Hadn't he taken enough abuse from Beth?
Jamie Dutton decided it was time to do something for his own sake, and he knew what he had to do.
"Shouldn't be too difficult. It's not like I'm actually PARTICIPATING in the rodeo," he thought to himself.
Little did he know, he thought wrong.

The Dutton Twins
Tumblr media
Chapter 2  (This has a time to the end of season 1 beginning of season 2)
I was in the bunkhouse with the boys when the door swung open, I looked up from where I was watching Ryan play poker and saw Kayce entering the bunkhouse “Got an empty bunk?” Kayce asked “Top one in the back.” One of the guys said, I watched my brother before getting up and kissing Ryan’s cheek “I’ll see you tomorrow morning.” I said before walking out of the bunkhouse and back to the house, I went up to my room and sat in my window, “Thought you would be down partying with your boyfriend.” Beth said walking and sitting on my bed “Got that wrong.” I laughed leaning my head against the wall “Ryan hurt you?” She questioned me “Fuck no, Ryan would be dead. Three times over.” I laughed smiling “So why you up here, your rarely up here anymore.” She said “Kayce’s down and I still haven’t forgiven him for leaving me.” I said adjusting myself “You two always had your way when ever you two fought. It was either hugging or yelling at each other and I hate to see my little sister be mad at her best friend.” Beth said getting up, I watched her walk out of my room and shut the door. I got up and went back down to the bunk house, when I opened the door everyone looked at me. I walked over to my brothers bunk “Get the fuck up.” I said flicking him “The fuck Bailey?” He questioned confused but getting up “Leave your fucking hat.” I said walking out of the bunkhouse, when Kayce finally came out I punched him the arm “The fuck Bailey?” He asked grabbing his arm “That’s for fucking breaking a damn promise!” I yelled coming back at him, I was ready to beat the shit out of my brother. But he grabbed both my wrists “Bailey the fuck is wrong with you?” He asked me “You left me twice.” I cried, trying to get out of his grip “Twice?” He questioned me “Once when you got her pregnant, the next time when you fucking shot Lees killer.” I spoke, still trying to get away from him “So fuck you Kayce John Dutton.” I said finally getting out of his grip, I went to punch him again but he pulled me in a hug “Kayce let me go.” I screamed struggling against him “Bailey.” He said softly once I stopped fighting him “Look I’m sorry for breaking that promise we made. Dad wanted me to do something I wasn’t going to do that to Monica or our kid.” He spoke, I had no idea what he meant but I nodded my “Let’s get you back to the house.” He said, I nodded my head, both of us walked back to the main house, he took me back up to my room and waited for me to fall asleep
Third Person
When Kayce got back everyone was looking at him they all heard Bailey yelling at him, Kayce just walked back to his bunk and went to sleep “What was that about?” Colby asked, “Those two have always had some sort of fight, nothing a little hugging won't fix.” Lloyd said, Ryan got up, but Lloyd didn’t know was going to happen and he didn’t want to know “Ryan sit back down.” Lloyd said, Ryan sat back down but was done playing cards, he was more worried about what he heard outside, the next morning Bailey was down by the barn or near anything “John where’s Bailey she normally jumping when I’m here.” Travis said “Hell if I know.” John laughed “And she normally takes your Goddamn money.” John laughed shaking his head, when Bailey got up she ran down to the barn where everyone, she saw Ryan already had her horse saddled “What were you going to do if I didn’t come down?” She asked looking at him “I was just hoping you would.” Ryan said kissing her cheek “That’s a new one.” Travis said noticing it “Not really.” John laughed, Bailey rode over to Travis and her dad “When did you become old enough to have a boyfriend?” Travis questioned her “When I found someone that could handle a damn barrel racer.” She laughed, Travis shook head laughing “I’ve seen some of the men you date Bailey.” Travis laughed “The men I’ve dated mostly only cared about one thing Travis.” She said holding up a finger “And most of them only last two months.” Travis spoke “One almost made it to a year.” She laughed “Then he met me.” Travis laughed
Most people didn’t know why Travis and Bailey were close, but John did, it was because Bailey spent two summers on the road with Travis showing horses, he was also the one of the people that was protective over her outside of him or her siblings, so he was used to all this banter, hell she went to college down in Texas and he became some sorta of surgoet brother to her through the year, hell she might be closer to Travis then she was Lee
Ryan was watching the whole thing and had his jaw clenched “Don’t worry they're more like siblings.” Lloyd spoke seeing Ryan “they seem way closer than that.” Ryan spoke “Travis has been there through everything for her, somethings her dad don’t know.” Lloyd said before riding off “Your boyfriend has been eyeing us.” Travis spoke he had noticed Ryan watching them “You should probably tell him why we are so close.” Travis spoke, “I don’t if I’m ready to open that damn can worm again.” She spoke looking at Travis “It’s not a good can of worms but it’s probably the damn reason why we got so close.” Travis smiled at her “Yeah, hell I never thought I would be able to cowgirl again.” She spoke “Scary fucking day.” Travis said, “Hey, I say this a lot but thanks.” She said before heading towards her boyfriend, Travis watched her ride off with a smile “Hey Travis, thanks for being there for her.” John said smiling at him.
She and Ryan rode next to each other “Sure Travis bring a horse, help us round up some cows.” Travis said, “Travis we’ve done enough horse-trading.” John laughed, soon they got the cattle back and were sorting them, after Ryan caught Bailey as she was putting up her horse “So what’s going on between you and Travis?” Ryan questioned, “Ryan, that's a really big can of worms.” She spoke closing her horse away “Then tell me.” He said softly “Let’s go I ain’t telling you in the damn barn.” She spoke, Ryan followed her to one of the fields near the main house “Okay tell me.” He said “It was a couple years before I came back here, I was rodeoing out in Fort Worth. When my horse at the time got spooked by something, I tried my damn hardest to stay on her but she started bucking and I fell in the dirt. Getting knocked out.” She spoke sighing, getting ready to go through with the next part “Travis one of the first people I saw when I woke in the damn hospital room, told me I was lucky, but my chances of being able to cowgirl again were 50/50, being able to rope again saddle a damn horse myself, I broke my collar bone in two places, took me a damn year to be fucking able to saddle a damn horse again. But Travis was there the whole fucking time I was showing Horse while recovering. We became pretty damn close during that whole year then I packed up, my trailer came back up here to help, and became a livestock agent.” She said looking at him “That still doesn't explain shit.” Ryan said shaking his head “Ryan I wasn’t going to be any fucking help here with only one good arm, can’t fucking saddle my damn horse. I was better at helping show than anything else.” She said she got up “Nothing happened between you and Travis ever?” Ryan questioned, “God fuck no, he’s a fucking brother to me.” She said before walking away “Bailey, I’m sorry for thinking anything else about you two.” He said running after her and grabbing her arm “Ryan, I don’t know why you would think anything different than what it looked like.” She spoke shaking her head “Because it fucking looked different you two laughing about god knows what.” Ryan spoke, “He was surprised I had a damn boyfriend.” She laughed, shaking her head “Why?” Ryan questioned her “Because most of the guys I date are completely dicks, and can’t fucking handle a barrel racer.” She laughed turning back around “Look I didn’t mean for this to be a fight.” Ryan said, “Well you did by fucking questioning me.” She spoke, and Ryan walked after her “I’m sorry I have no right to question who you are friends with.” Ryan spoke it made Bailey turn around with a look of shock “What I don’t.” He said walking up to her “You should be questioning my taste in men before you.” She laughed shaking her head “You ever thought of going back?” He questioned her “Sometimes I loved doing it. I loved showing horses too.” She said looking up at him “I would love to see you do it.” Ryan smiled at her, she grabbed his hand and led him to the house “Where are you taking me?” He questioned, “You said you wanted to see me do what I love.” She spoke,
The next morning Ryan and Bailey were still in her bed “Shit.” She mumbled she didn’t realize she and Ryan had fallen asleep last night watching some of her old rodeo videos “Ryan wake up.” She said hitting him with a pillow “Ow the fuck.” He mumbled “We fell asleep.” She said looking at him “Shit.” Ryan said sitting up, Bailey got ready and Ryan ran down to the bunkhouse to get ready himself, Bailey came downstairs and saw her sister smirking “What?” She questioned “I just saw Ryan running out of here.” She giggled “Sis this aint no walk of shame.” She laughed shrugging on her flannel and grabbing her hat by the door, Bailey walked down and stood next to Ryan “I got so much shit this morning .” Ryan laughed putting his arm around her “Don’t worry baby my sister will give you more shit, since she saw you running out the house this morning.” She laughed, the cowboys were giving Jimmy shit “Jimmy don’t worry this is the best part.” Bailey laughed shaking her head, just as she turned around she saw her dad cappoles on the ground “DAD!” She screamed, she tried running but Ryan pulled her back “Bailey you don’t need to this.” Ryan said bring her head into his chest, Bailey tried to fight against him “Bailey stop.” Ryan whispered into her ear, anyone who wasn’t in the vet trailer was witnessing, what was happening outside, Ryan sat in the dirt leaning against the mental fence, he held Bailey and let her cry it out “It’s okay Bailey.” He whispered “We will follow the chopper to the hospital.” He said soothing down her hair, Ryan looked up and saw kayce “Meet us there Ryan.” He yelled before getting in the chopper “Come on Bailey.” Ryan said, Bailey looked up and her mascara was running down her face “Ryan take her to the hospital to meet the chopper.” Rip said, Ryan nodded both Bailey and Ryan got up, Avery walked over and handed Bailey a package of makeup wipes. The drive to the hospital Bailey was quiet she was wiping off her face with the make up wipes Avery handed her “Nice having a female in the bunkhouse.” Bailey laughed “You do know-?” Ryan was cut off by Bailey “Yeah I know.” Bailey said looking at Ryan “She keeps you guys honest.” Bailey laughed “Oh you already made me an honest man.” Ryan spoke reaching over and grabbing her hand “Tamed a wild cowboy.” She laughed shaking her head, they pulled up to the hospital and met Kayce outside “Kayce what going on with dad?” Bailey questioned “Had an ulcer and apparently it ruptured, but apparently he also had cancer.” Kayce said looking at his little sister “I’m sorry what?” Bailey questioned “How could not tell either of you?” Ryan questioned “I mean you two as of right now seem to inherit it all.” Ryan spoke looking between the two siblings “You might be right.” Kayce spoke looking at the hand “Can I see him?” Bailey questioned “Bailey knowing you will go off if you see him lets wait until he’s home.” Kayce said setting a hand on her shoulder “I’ll see yall back at the ranch.” Kayce spoke
Kayce watched as the couple left and walked back out the door, he liked Ryan he saw how he treated his little sister, oh was Kayce going to have that talk with Ryan. But was Kayce in that position to give that talk to him.

Current State of Affairs|2| Lee Dutton
Yeah, I don't have an excuse other then real life has caught up to me and my life kind of fell apart for a few weeks. Things are on the up hill now.
Two: Truth Be Told
“Well Beth, I am saying never. He had his shot and he never took it.” Spencer returned as she picked up her robe and towel, “he respects Kayce too much.” Beth’s eyebrows knitted together in confusion as she dropped down on the chair that had been pulled out from the vanity. “What do you mean he had his shot?” There was silence as Spencer went into the bathroom and turned on the water for the shower.
“Just that, he had his chance and didn’t do anything.” She went to shut the door to have some sort of privacy but was stopped just as quickly by Beth, this was all news to her.
“Whoa, whoa, you can’t just drop a bomb like that on me and then not say anything else.”
“Remember that weekend that Kayce and I broke up?”
 “Yeah.”
She remembered it all too well, Kayce and their father had gotten into a fight, and Kayce decided that he was done with everything. He had snuck out in the middle of the night and went to the Abbott Ranch and talked Spencer into leaving with him.  They were at the gas station when Rip and Lee found them and Spencer had her choice and she had gotten into the truck with Lee and Rip.  And three days later Kayce showed up with Monica and shattered whatever was left of their relationship.  Spencer had stormed out of the house and Lee had followed her but not after throwing a couple of punches at his brother.
“And how he followed me to the barn?” Seeing her friends nod, Spencer carried on, “We had sex and then the next day, it was just business as normal. I don’t know what hurt worse. Kayce marrying Monica or Lee doing that. And honestly, Beth, if Lee would have said the word, I would have stayed no questions asked.”  Without waiting for a reaction from her best friend, the girl turned to shut the door to shower in semi-peace.
**
Beth waited until the shower was on fully and she could hear Spencer singing along to the Elvis song that was playing on the Bluetooth speaker before she picked up the phone to call her brother with every intention of cussing him out. If he had manned up and done something about it, then Spencer wouldn’t have had to run to the East Coast and stayed away longer than Beth herself had.
Not doing anything right or about their feelings seemed about right with her brothers. Lee threw himself into his work at the ranch. Kayce joined the military and Jamie, well he was a whole different sort that she really tried not to figure out.
She dialed her oldest brother’s phone number, her anger getting the best of her.
It rang once, twice, and then Lee's voice filtered the room. "What Beth?"
"You fucked  Spencer then left her?!"
"She is here?"
"Of course she is idiot! Her dad is getting married! She is the maid of Honor." She had seen the series of pictures from Spencer's Instagram of Spencer, Leighla, and several others going shopping in New York for the bridal fittings and knew that she was taking part in the wedding as the maid of honor, and for once she was happy that her friend was in the same time zone, it was going to make their weekly facetime calls so much easier.
"You need to make this right Lee, her boyfriend is here and he is." The unspoken words about Spencer's relationship hung in the air. The whole Dutton family knew about the man who was with Spencer and how much her father and stepmother hated him. On more than one occasion John had encouraged Lee to go out to Yale and get Spencer.
But for whatever reason Lee refused. Now, though, there was silent hope that he would do something about this. "You need to man up and do something before that son of a bitch kills her." The water shut off and Beth quickly disconnected the call and popped the cork on the bottle. She quickly filled two glasses and was ready to hand one over when she came into the room.
***
Lee was uncomfortable wearing the fancy clothes that his brother Jamie made him put on and even more so when he was surrounded by other people like his younger brother.
"Stop fidgeting.' John ordered in his ear, he  had just  come back in from the barn with Spencer's father and uncle, "We don't have to stay long."
"But I hope you stay long enough to visit with me Uncle John," Spencer's voice came from the stairs behind them and Lee felt his heart leap to his throat, she was even prettier than in his memories or in the pictures that he saw on Jamie's Instagram feed.
"Spence." His father greeted her as she came down the rest of the steps and into his arms for a hug. He lifted her off the ground and pressed a kiss to a cheek.
"The North looks good on you," Jamie added as he pressed his own kiss on her other cheek.
"Sure also raging asshole  does too." She returned before letting Rip greet her.
"Don't start with that Rip." She started as if she knew what the enforcer was going with before he even started. She wasn't in the mood to deal with it and she wasn't in the mood to deal with her boyfriend pouting that he got his ass handed to him by her family.
"Not until after the weddin'."  5 hours back in Montana and she had already slipped back into the old Spencer, she wondered if this was how Ryder felt when she went back to Charming.
Lee could feel almost how she steeled herself as she turned to look at him. "Hey, Lee."
"Hey, angel." He returned, his feet carrying him over to her and to do the same greeting that his father and brother did but her head turned at the last second and their lips met in a brief kiss.
"I am sorry.' She started but he waved her complaints away before looking over her head at the man who was coming down the stairs behind her. "Release her."
"Who the hell are you to demand anything?" Rip asked, from what he gathered from Beth and from what he heard from Spencer herself, he knew who it was and to him, the Abbotts as well as the Duttons were his family now and he would go to any lengths to protect his family.
"I am Lewis. Her boyfriend." Lee's hand tightened on Spencer's hip and he pulled her closer to him and Rip took a step forward standing in front of them.
"Oh come on Grace," Lewis complained, he wasn't smart enough to go towards her in the middle of a group of protectors.
Especially ones that looked ready to kill him at second notice.
"Why don't you and I go and have a talk." John demanded, "And let Spencer and the boys catch up." "Who the hell are you?" The smaller man asked, his hands clenched into fists at his sides.
"Lewis, this is John, he's my father's best friend and my godfather," Spencer answered, all too familiar Spencer Abbott's smirk was starting to form.
"This is Rip Wheeler." She went on, still firmly being held by Lee and Jamie who shifted ready to defend them if need be, "He works for Uncle John and is basically the right hand for him and Lee."
Lee's fingers dug into the shiny black material of her dress, in an effort not to fully lose his temper. "This is Jamie, he is the reason why I went to Yale and became a lawyer." Her hand that wasn't holding onto Lee's wrist squeezed Jamie's free one.
"And this is Lee.'
There was a realization of who Lee was dawning on Lewis' face and that barely held-on temper snapped he took massive steps forward only to be pushed back by Rip who was furious. As far he was concerned, Spencer was family and he was going to do anything and everything he could to protect her.
"Do not touch her!" He spat as Lee slowly moved away from the group, he wanted to defend her and handle Lewis but his first and only concern was Spencer and her safety. "Lee, take her into the dining room." Frank commented, "Leighla and the girls are waiting for her."
"Yes sir." Lee returned as he turned them around and steered her towards the rapidly filling dining room, casting angry looks at anyone who dared to get too close to them
"How bad is it Spence?" He asked as he pulled her chair out for her, he was already sitting at the table but he was going to take Lewis' seat to sit next to her. And the man could deal with it if he even came in from the barn.
"Bad. Rhett almost gutted him like a fish." She answered. The older Dutton son undid the button on his jacket and sat down next to her, his arm settling on the back of her chair. "He came out to the ranch in Wyoming to get me after my visit and lost his shit on me.”  She shifted so she was sitting closer to him, ‘Rhett and Perry talked me into doing a barrel race. And I went down hard. Bruised my hip and thigh.” Lee met his sister’s eyes and saw the furious way that the muscle in her jaw was working, of course, Beth knew more than what she was letting on.
She normally did and now like always it was going to be up to him to get to the bottom of it and save Spencer. Like he should have years ago.

Meggy I swore I wasn't gonna end up taking it out of the pantry until later but this just has to come out (lol). Thank you so much by the way, because I think "Believe" is gonna end up being my favorite little Christmas fic (lol).
I was gonna have this be for Miles but unfortunately, Rhett Abbott has struck at this odd hour and a friend of mine and I have been going back and forth about this idea for a while (lol).
I don't know if you watch Yellowstone at all, but I can't get it outta my head that John Dutton, Royal Abbott, Thomas Rainwater and Thomas's friend, Mo, were all serious neighborhood miscreants growing up. So close were they, that when Rhett was born, Royal asked John personally if he could be Rhett's godfather and the man readily accepted.
Rhett, Kayce, Rip, Beth and Wes Redwood (one of my ocs for Outer Range) all grew up together and also caused a shitload of mischief in their own right. I'm tellin ya, these kiddos were absolute MENACES in grade school, so many noogies, titty twisters, Indian burns and games of "brain damage" on the bus. There were alot more kids in their gang, a whole bunch of ranch and rez brats that took to each other like fish in water. Since Wes grew up on the Nez Perce land over the hill from the Abbotts, he'd always get the feral kiddos from his neck of the woods to join. Perry was always the unfortunate victim of their shenanigans (literally nobody......I repeat NOBODY, will ever talk about the staple gun incident, lol).
They all kinda felt bad for Billy Tillerson because Perry, Trevor and Luke would always pick on him for being the runt of the litter so Rhett, Rip, Kayce and Wes all decided to have him initiated into the group. When they did, Cecelia swore the kids were having some kind of creepy ritual in the basement and regretted it instantly when she opened the door and found Billy strapped to the coffee table and saw Rip spanking Billy with a ping pong paddle and the kids all gathered in a circle around it.
"Roy! Ya'll better come see what the headcases did this time!" (lol).
One time the guys got all weirded out too when Cecelia started her spring cleaning warpath. Rhett went to hide at Wes's place for a good couple of hours but it ended with Rhett, Rip, Kayce, Wes and the other men of the house hiding on the roof with a twelve pack and a bunch of lawn chairs while they were singing John Denver's "Calypso." All Cece had to do was follow the sound of the alley cats screeching and she scared the shit out of'em when she jumped in with the yodeling part (lol).
Oh but it gets even better (lol).
Beth had bought a piece of real estate property from a police auction, thinking she was gonna get a good deal out of it, but when the boys all walked in there, whaddaya know?? It was an absolute floor to ceiling hoarder nightmare! Rip was in charge of filming everybody's reactions and they were absolutely HYSTERICAL.
"Oh my God it looks like Oscar The Grouch just threw up in here," coming from Rhett.
"Uh, why does that cardboard cutout of Carrie Fisher have a hole in it?" coming from Kayce.
"Bro this place is clearly diseased and needs a tetanus shot......maybe like three," coming from Wes.
"Aw man, I don't wanna know what I just stepped in," coming from Rip.
"I don't wanna check the basement, I'm scared a tentacle's gonna slither out and grab me," coming from Kayce.
But oh do the boys love that they can give Beth so much shit because they're the ones working on that godforsaken death trap of a house while she's in the office with John and Thomas (lol). Even Rhett's beloved wifey gets alot of it at work too (lol).
They will literally send her memes, tik toks and all sorts of shit throughout the day just to see the reaction. Rip's personal favorites were when they were demoing the shitty bathroom upstairs and he'd take all sorts of pics of Rhett making weird faces which in turn would become yet another "Elvis died on the toilet" meme (lol).
Meggy I'm just gonna stop right there because I know if I keep going it's just gonna get weirder. I was in a very, very silly mood this evening and just couldn't help myself, plus I figured maybe a good laugh was in order (lol).
aww! Of course Mary :) i really enjoyed your “Believe” fic & love that you chose to write it with Miles! Rhett my beloved :,) yesss! you can send in thoughts/thots about any of Lew’s characters! i’m not opposed & will read them all! besides Owen of course😬 but i’m excited to read what you’ve sent in !!
~ i haven’t seen Yellowstone! i don’t watch many shows honestly. i’m pretty boring when it comes to that haha😅 I’m gonna have to read up on it, but from what i do know about it & seeing how you’ve infused it into the Outer Range universe, it seems like it would be very fitting!!
~ of course Rhett was a little troublemaker growing up, i can so see it!! all of these little shenanigans you listed are making me chuckle & the fact that Perry was victim to all of it! ha i love it!! also love that they have this little friend group where they could cause mishap together! it’s awesome. Billy being the runt just makes so much sense & omg the part about them tying him to the coffee table & spanking him is SENDING ME !!! also Cecelia just yelling to Royal to come witness what these crazy kids were up to again is just 🤣🤣
~ haha i love this part about them singing on the roof !! & love it being a John Denver song too:)) not Cecilia joining in with them !! HAHA! Mary you have me laughing like an idiot over here just trying to picture this😭 also the part about the house & the boys just roasting the shit of it,
"Oh my God it looks like Oscar The Grouch just threw up in here," coming from Rhett.
"Bro this place is clearly diseased and needs a tetanus shot......maybe like three," coming from Wes.
~ these boys ! MENACES TO SOCIETY! they did not hold back one bit, i love it so much🤣 haha not them sending wifey memes & tik toks! also not the elvis dying on the toilet meme too help!! rolling around laughing over this!
Mary your mind! i swear you always have such creative ideas & your thoughts/thots never fail to make me smile or laugh! i’m sorry for not really contributing much to this, but just know that i really enjoyed reading it !! thank you for sending it in 🥰💗

John dutton and reader in bed after shes taken a pregnancy test " im too damn old for kids " John says " not old " reader says
Seven Morming Wake Up Call
Tumblr media
Sliding the bathroom door opened trying to hide the nervous smile across my face. Leaning in the doorway I held a secret pregnancy test behind my back. John shrugged a night shirt over his head and tossed the covers aside and laid down in the bed. “Are you coming to bed, darling?”
“John, what would you say if I told you I had something to tell you?” I asked him not moving away from the doorway.
He slightly sits up against the pillows with his hands in his lap. “I’d say go right ahead Y/n. You know everything about me and I know everything about you. We agreed on no secrets didn’t we?”
“Well what I’m about to tell you is something very big…..Here you go.” Moving away from the edge of the bathroom I felt a nervous twist in the pit of my stomach. It shouldn’t be that much of a surprise since I was old enough to know that you could get pregnant the first time you sleep with someone. But I never expected to get pregnant with an old rancher considering John and I haven’t been dating that long.
John blinks his eyes seeing me reveal the test from behind my back and holding it out to him. He slowly takes it from my hands holding it closer so he could read it better. He gulped mumbling under his breath. “You’re joking with me aren’t ya. Did Tate put you up to this?”
“I wish I was, John. But unfortunately no…it’s for real.” Twirling my thumbs I shifted from foot to foot standing at the edge of the bed.
He ran his fingers through his hair sighing heavily and throwing his head back on the pillows. “It’s Seven in the fucking morning…this can’t be happening.”
“John, please don’t say that. Oh geez what are we going to do?” Pacing back and forth I felt my heart skipping a beat a lot faster than it was a few minutes ago. Eyeing my jacket and boots by the door I rushed over scrambling to get them back on and just get out of here before things go worse. Putting my hand on the doorknob I was about to leave until…
John’s feet hit the floor and he gently grabbed my other wrist stopping me from leaving. “Y/n, don’t leave. I mean I don’t mean to freak out here but it’s just - I’m too damn old to have kids in my opinion.”
“Not to me you’re not.” I blurted out dropping my hand from the doorknob and turned around to face him.
The eldest Dutton before me was taken back by my words. “You don’t. But why not?”
“Cause you are an old rancher who raised four kids all on his own. Yes you may have done some things that weren’t great but no parent is perfect all the time. And I don’t want to raise this child on my own if you want to still be with me. So if you’re with me John tell me now.” Clasping my hands in front of me I tapped my foot nervously waiting for his answer.
He steps forward gently cupping my face in his hands kissing me gently. “It may scare the hell out of me but I would never abandon you and this baby of ours. It will be you and me together.”
“Thank you, John. You’ll be a good father I just know it.” Throwing my arms around his neck laying my head against his chest gently. He wrapped his arms around my waist holding me as close as possible being just as scared as I was yet we had each other and that meant we could probably do anything.

"Momma, are we really gonna ride with grandpa tomorrow?" Elsa asked jumping up and down like she had eaten a bunch of sugar.
Dallas was beside Ryan helping him load up his gear for tomorrow. It was where we would brand the cattle and sleep in just tents like real cowboys. That's what Lioyd told me once. Pulling my brown fur jacket closer around myself while tipping my brown hat up. "Yes sweatshirt. We will be going alongside your daddy. Now why don't you go play with your brother."
"I'm suprised you're letting them get on horses, baby." Footsteps approached from behind me with familiar arms wrapping around my waist from behind.
Leaning into his embrace I sighed in relief just enjoying the moment for a few seconds then turning around in his hold. "From where I stand you got on a horse young. Bree was riding horses at age ten if I remember correctly. I think it's time they start learning. I'll have Dallas ride with me and you can have Elsa." Draping my arms over his shoulders with a small smile.
"Sounds like a deal, Mrs. Dutton." He leans forward whispering in my ear making me blush. "Why don't you and I go spend our last night for a while in the bed."
Hitting his chest I tugged him back inside the main house knowing we needed to start packing our own gear. "We'll have time for that when we get back, Kayc. Let's go." Exiting the main house a few hours later I saw my father in law talking with his daughter and she had a very true point. That they didn't want to live beside him they simply wanted the land and for us to be gone.
"She's got a point you know. They want us all gone, John." I mumbled leaning against the stone wall watching his daughter leave heading towards a storage barn where Rip was getting supplies ready for Carter.
He sighed running a hand down his face staring at me longingly. "I just hope I can keep this for you and your children. I only have one son now and my daughter can't have her own children. So you're children will get all of this."
"I appreciate your work, John.." I trailed off twisting the fabric of my jacket knowing he was expecting me to give him some answer on me becoming livestock commissioner. I wasn't sure that Kayce should completely give it up. But I really wasn't sure if I would be good at the job. I was only used to be following what my husband thought was right for the cattle and horses because he was raised to do the job, not me.
The evening came sooner than I expected and I figured it would be an interesting dinner considering John had freed Summer and put her on house arrest here. Leaving her and Beth to most likely get into it sometime tonight. John was at the head of the table. Kayce and I took the chairs on the end. Carter was sitting next to Bree who had Rip on her other side and Beth beside him. Elsa was sitting on the other end facing her grandfather. Finally there was an empty chair on the opposite side of Dallas that Summer ended up taking being close to the governor like his daughter. Gator entered the room sitting down multiple trays of meat noticing Summer sitting at the table. "Oh I'm sorry ma'am. If I had known I would have made you something else."
"Give her what we feed the horses, Gator." Beth scoffed glaring across the table at the girl.
Biting my lip I forked some food on each of the twins plates so they were distracted with eating rather than watching what was about to happen. "Gator she'll be here for 6 months so could you make something that she can eat in the future?" John asked the cook.
"So uh what we have prepared here is an esuremain of game. There on the left vension-"
Summer interrupts him. "Which is to say a deer you shot that was just minding its own business."
"Yes that's right...beside that we'll have roast duck-" He started again but it didn't matter.
She asked a question intertwining her hands together. "Do you realize duck's mate for life?"
"If it helps I killed them both-"
She scoffed as I covered my mouth with my hands trying to not laugh at how ridiculous she was being. "It doesn't make it better. It makes its twice as bad. And what is this little creature that can't even feed one person?"
Kayce glanced at me then shifted his gaze to Bree and Carter who were just watching like the rest of us. "Actually I serve four per person.."
"So you kill four and what is this mystery?" Summer points towards the plate in front of her.
Gator slumped his shoulders and I felt bad for him that she wasn't being a very good guest. Because she could go back to prison if she liked. "Uh that's a dove."
"Dove, the bird of peace."
Beth sat down her napkin eyeing the girl. "Summer, let's you and I take a walk. Maybe I can educate you on our different ways of life."
"Our different cultures.." She snarled back letting her lead her out of the house.
Tate reached forward alongside my husband taking some of the duck from the plate. I forked some deer on mine about to take a bite until Elsa and Dallas both showed their empty plates. "Can we have seconds?"
"How about you let others get some first you two." Kayce chuckled through a bright grin.
Rip focused his attention back on his boss asking softly. "Sir, do you want me to go after them?"
"I think that's a terrible idea, Rip." John chuckled shaking his head getting some meat on his plate. I couldn't hold in my laughter anymore so I just start hitting my fist on the table hearing him tell Gator I'll have four.
Carter watched Bree raise her hand asking like she was in school. "Is there any cake tonight?" Everyone at the table just smiled and laughed at her innocent question.
"Yes granddaughter, Gator is making cupcakes tonight don't you worry." Her grandfather replied as Rip got up to go check on them outside. When he came back both girls were beaten pretty bad and you could see blood on their faces. Summer ended up just eating some mashed potatoes until John returned with a first aid kit.
After dinner I slowly sit down in the porch swing just looking up at the stars in peaceful silence until the front door gently closed. Turning my head that direction I smiled seeing my husband who sits down beside me. "Woah...I'm sorry about tonight. I didn't exactly want the twins to see that tonight."
"You've got nothing to apologize for, Kayce. You couldn't have known those two were gonna butt heads again." I smiled up to him running my fingers through his hair since he wasn't wearing his hat at the moment. He had put the twins to bed and told Tate and Bree to go to bed once they finished packing for tomorrow morning.
He sighed enjoying the feeling where he rests his head on my shoulder intertwining my freehand with his left. I crossed my fingers that tomorrow would just be about us and the family. Riding horses and doing what we loved and teaching that spirit into our four children. "If Carter and Bree try to share a tent I'm gonna punch him."
"He's a kid, Kayce." I scoffed not taking him seriously.
He lifted his head up not changing his facial expression meaning he was dead serious about this. "I ain't kidding darlin'. I'm not comfortable with the idea."
"Overall your just not comfortable with her growing up." I replied tucking hair out from in front of his eyes where he nodded softly yes.
We allowed the familiar silence to surround us again just watching for any shooting stars. He wrapped his arms around my waist tugging me to sit on his lap. Laying my head against his chest he put his chin on top of my head until I start giggling thinking back to our children all covered in chocolate from the cupcakes and how the twins were bouncing off the wall wanting to have more meat. "I can't believe our twins were eating like wild dogs. Tearing all that meat apart so easily."
"Yeah that was pretty fun. Summer would have probably thrown up at the sight. Don't you think Y/n?" Kayce chuckled with a huge smile and my heart swooned seeing him happy again.
Lifting my head up I softly kissed him. He leans into it resting one hand to cradle my cheek in his hand. "I agree with that, cowboy. I wonder who they got that instinct from hmm?"
"Don't act you wouldn't tear up my mother's biskets exactly like that." He teased me while twirling some loose strands of my hair in between his fingers.
Wrapping my arms around his neck I smirked when he leaned forward kissing me deeply. I moaned into the kiss twisting my fingers in his brown curls. But he broke the kiss before we got too heated and ended up making love tonight. "Let's get to bed darlin'. We've got a long ride on horse back tomorrow."
I am pretty sure it was four in the morning when we woke and everyone was there for breakfast including Summer. But nobody really talked and headed to saddle their horses. Tate and Bree were riding Lucky and Holly since they were old enough. Throwing my saddle over I tied it off quickly allowing me to pick up young Dallas and sit him in front of me on my horse once I climbed on. Moving my brown hat up Kayce was holding a sleeping Elsa against his chest riding his own horse. Glancing over my shoulder I saw Summer just standing off in the distance watching so I moved my horse to walk her way. "We could saddle you a horse if you've changed your mind."
"I already told John I don't want to ride a creature he forced into submission...but thanks for the offer Y/n." She grumbled giving me a weak smile crossing her arms over her chest.
Dallas yawned snuggling into my chest where I brushed hair from his face letting him sleep. "Summer, there's something you should know. I didn't know that I would enjoy working here, living here but I do. And do you know how I discovered that?"
"No." She shook her head staring up at me.
Tilting my head a little I wrapped one hand around the reins of my horse as he made a noise. Swinging his tail a little bit. "Because I tried something new to see if I would like it or not. You're parents may be vegans but it doesn't mean you are completely right. You have to try and see both sides of something. Just keep that in mind." Kicking my horse in the belly she walks over to Beth who I was joyed to see was coming with us even though she didn't like horses.
"I don't know what to do while he's gone...I don't know what to do when he's here." Summer bends her head down dropping her hands at her sides.
Beth glanced my direction where I nodded tipping my hat to her following to ride alongside Kayce. "Well I think you got that part figured out. Why don't you take a walk around this place. You'll understand us better. Tell me if there is a forest in America in better shape or more loved. Then tell me we're the enemy."
"You ready for this, Y/n." Kayce asked kicking his horse in belly starting the ride off.
Kicking my horse John lead the charge with Rip. Bree and Carter were riding in front of us so we were the last two on the riding trail. "I'm ready for anything so long as you and our family are with me Kayce." The wind blows through my hair as we focused our eyes on the land ahead of us.

oh gosh another oc? how did that get there………..yeah i have an issue…
am i making too many and no one even knows who they are? yup. do i care? no cuz i’m obsessive and i need a version of myself to ship with the men i simp for from various shows/games
on today’s episode of who am i simping for: it’s ryan from yellowstone, so low and behold another cowboy oc, ronnie can have a cowboy friend now😌
Tumblr media
i used this beautiful and amazing doll maker, i love it so much it’s so cute and it’s literally my favourite thing ever
there she stands, wearing her fancy rodeo clothes, her lucky hat and her boyfriend’s coat. this is Lucky Annabelle Bonnie, notorious barrel racer of the Dutton Ranch and ward of John Dutton. well that’s her stage name anyway, she goes by anne or annie by family and friends.
as sweet and humble as she is, she’s a fierce barrel racer, fearlessly winning many championships all around north america travelling from one competition to the next during rodeo season. she earns big bucks for herself and the dutton household with her skill in barrel racing. big shows and rodeo princessing aside, she’s a hard worker, helps around the ranch any time she can. she doesn’t like to feel like just another pretty face earning money a few times a year from racing 15 second races per competition. she’s done her fair share in heavy duty work on the ranch, helping out the hired cowboys with chores, herding and more.
she was brought into the Dutton Ranch as a ward under John Dutton’s care as a favour to her late mother who was close with the Dutton family. through her years living on the ranch since her pre-teens, she’s grown close with all the cowboys working on the grounds. she likes to make friends with them even if everyone else doesn’t bother much. she enjoys their company more than the rest of the houses’ if she’s being honest. lucky for her she gets her own private cabin not too far from the main house, within walking distance but far enough that she doesn’t need to spend much time there if she doesn’t need to (or want to). one thing leads to another, one friendship with a certain cowboy ends up flourishing a different kind of bond, one John Dutton isn’t too fond of. perhaps it’s her fearless barrel riding instincts that risked it all to stand up to the big shot Dutton to keep her relationship alive.

Advent Calendar: Day 24 @onlydevilsleft
Tumblr media
It wasn’t like she didn’t know the blizzard was coming. Of course she did. So did everyone who’s ever been bucked off a horse, been kicked by one, got a bit of age on them, or been shot or otherwise injured. Which is pretty much every single soul over the age of ten between the Yellowstone and the Five Oaks. The storm has been heralded for a week by plunging temperatures, that bitter cold that bites deep and doesn’t let go. That’s why she’d done her best to prepare. In the backseat of the cab she’s got thick, insulating blankets, heat packs, gallons of water, a dry change of cold, a first aid kit, and high protein snacks. A lighter, matches, couple of high end flashlights, road flares. Everything she could possibly need. Except for chains, and jumper cables. A fully charged phone. Beth’s ignorance of auto mechanics rivals her knowledge about horses. She stands there, face reddening by the minute, fingers stiffening in her gloves as she lets out a strangled, scarf muffled scream as she kicks the tire once, twice. This does not convince her engine to turn over, and if anything, the truck sinks sullenly into the first five inches of snow. She has two choices then. Be stuck on the road out while the temperatures dip down her age or more below zero…or she swallows her pride and makes the two mile hike back up to the Duttons’ door.
~*~ She doesn’t feel her hands as she rings the doorbell. When Kayce opens the door, there are snowflakes pale like reverse-freckles against the strands of her peeking out from her knit cap with its bright colours and soggy bobble. Her lashes are just about iced, and her panting breaths create fog in front of her near-blue lips. All of her aches, and she’s almost too tired to shiver. Still, she tries to smile. “S-s-sorry t’ int-intru-intrude on Christmas Eve and all…but t-t-truck broke dow- She doesn’t get any further than that before he’s ushering her in. It all happens so quickly she barely has time to register that the whole house looks like the North Pole. Jamie’s slumped by the fire that John’s just adding another log to. She doesn’t see the other Beth, but a hint of cigarette smoke says she’s been here recently. Arm wrapped around her waist and muttering things she can’t quite hear because she’s not really able to watch his mouth, Kayce doesn’t exactly smuggle her to his room so much as he guides her. And once there, with the door closed? “Take off your clothes.” “...’scuse me?” She’s absolutely certain he could incinerate her with the gaze he shoots at her and she laughs even if it hurts her chest to do so. She manages to get her gloves off, then her coat and regrets doing it. “You’re hypothermic,” he tells her, though there’s a huskier edge to his tone. “Need to get into some dry clothes, and come sit by the fire, getcha warmed up. He’s grabbed one of his flannels and she’s sure she’s plenty warmed up when he lays it on the bed and starts unbuttoning her shirt.

this is one shot for Ryan and Bailey I came up with yes it rewritten from my The Dutton Twins series
I woke up at 4 am because I was meeting Ryan at the barn for a sunrise ride as I like to call it, I had already told Dad me and Ryan might not be back for a while once we left
Third Person POV
Rip was looking for Ryan until John came down “Boss, Ryan is missing.” Rip said running over to John “No he’s not, he went for a ride with Bailey beside it being their 1st anniversary so don’t expect Ryan or Bailey to be anywhere near work today.” John laughed knowing his daughter too well. “Also Bailey left me a note saying she packed them lunch.” John walked away after that shaking his head
Ryan and Bailey were still riding to where Bailey wanted to go “Bailey how where the hell are we going?” Ryan questioned riding beside her “A special place only me and my brother know.” She smiled looking at him “So how old were you when you found this place?” Ryan asked making small talk “It was before my mom died so like seven, but kinda whenever things went south I would come here by myself. Especially the day she died, every year for the last 21 years.” Bailey said looking over at Ryan “Her death must have hit you hard.” he said with a sad smile “Yeah I was closer to her than my siblings and she would always tell me that one day, I would have kids one day probably before my siblings. God now rambling about kids and you probably don't want any.” Bailey said shaking her head at herself “Actually I love kids and don’t care if we have a kid nine months from now as long as I get to have that with them.” Ryan said smiling at her “We haven’t even had sex yet.” Bailey laughed shaking her head “We have just not since we have been dating.” Ryan said with a shit-eating grin on his face “You want to have sex in front of our horse?” Bailey asked raising an eyebrow at her boyfriend “I mean we can have them look away.” Ryan laughed with a smile
“Well it’s not that, I’m just… how do I put this… I want kids I really do but I guess I’m scared because I didn’t grow up with a mom. I mean seven years yeah, but I don’t know the first thing about it.” I said playing with my saddle
“We can figure it out together.” He said smiling “But let's revisit this topic later.” She smiled, and soon she was running off “Bailey.” Ryan yelled chasing after her, she finally slowed and brought her horse to a stop “Wow.” Ryan said looking around him “I know, when I found out my mom died, I practically ran to my horse, by one of the cowboys stopped me.” She smiled at him “You were going to come here?” He questioned, “Yeah so the next day I came out with Lee.” She said, “You said brother I thought you meant Kayce.” He said, “Nah, Lee’s my best friend.” She said “But enough sad shit. This is supposed to be about us today, not my family.” She said smiling “Have I told who much I love that damn smile?” Ryan questioned moving his horse closer to her “Only a couple hundred times.” She smiled leaning over to kiss him, Ryan pulled back after the kiss “Why did you do that Ry?” She questioned him “Because I would rather be standing.” He smiled starting to get off his horse, he came over and then helped Bailey off hers “You know I can get off my horse Cowboy.” She smiled looking up at him “I know but my mom taught me how a lady should be treated.” He smiled leaning down to kiss her, she hummed into the kiss “She did good.” She whispered against his lip “Maybe we should eat that lunch you packed before we move further.” Ryan laughed  into the kiss “Make the horses look away?” She questioned pulling off the flannel she was wearing “I think last time this happened it was in the damn loft.” he laughed “I think your right.” She laughed pulling away from him, and grabbing her horse rains “Let's tie these two up so we don’t have to worry about them running back to the barn.” She laughed, Ryan grabbed his own horse and they tied up there horses, Ryan grabbed her waist once they were done “Now where were we?” Ryan questioned taking her hat off and setting it on her saddle horn “Think we're about to the part where you lay me down.” She giggled and Ryan did just that, when the couple got back to the ranch the sun had just set “I feel I’m gonna get yelled at tomorrow morning.” Ryan said as they brushed down their horses “I don’t think you will baby.” She smiled, putting her horse away
