I think the coolest thing about life is how pain and joy come together so beautifully in life. The things that typically bring us the most pain, are often our greatest sources of joy. I learned this when my grandma passed away. She was my absolute best friend in the entire world. I talked to her all the time, about anything. I’m fact, she was the only one I would actually tell how I was FEELING. Along her has been one of the greatest pains of my life, but only because she was one of my greatest sources of happiness. She understood what I go through when no one around me did. She loved the same things I did and was always interested in hearing about them. Losing her, I lost a piece of me, but also found a piece of me too. She lives inside of me. Every scrap of light she gave me, is now my lower to give to my daughter and granddaughter one day. “Take it to the cross.” Such a simple thing, and yet it can be so hard. To continually run to the foot of the cross with everything that you carry and leave it there. Trusting that the word of God is true and that Jesus is there waiting to take it all from you. Not some, ALL. This is something I am working on daily, bringing everything that is heavy for me to Jesus. Sleepless nights and a crying baby... Taking it to Jesus Feelings of worthlessness and un acceptance... Taking it to Jesus Worrying about being good at what I do... Taking it to Jesus Fear of the future, fear of the unknown... Taking it to Jesus Comments about parenting or homeschooling... Taking it to Jesus The bad things that have happened to me in the past... Taking it to Jesus Shame for the life I once lived and all that I did... Taking it to Jesus I’m pretty good at bringing Jesus into all the small areas of my life, all the day to day decisions. BUT I’m still learning how to give my load to Him... and that’s okay. It’s okay that I’m still learning. It’s okay that I don’t have everything right. (Available) What is it like to look, to really LOOK, at the small moments, the cracks and the wrinkles, and to see joy there? This year, my favorite moments have been times spent in the natural world, next to a creek somewhere, with my young children digging in the sand or discovering something new. Or a relaxing conversation with my wife out on the back porch (though those have been hard to come by, since we’re both stressed and overworked, most of the time.) In this piece, “Mystic Joy,” I particularly like the moments of overlap and disconnect. I was trying here to make meaning with mundane symbols, alongside my other artistic project, but I feel that it also has a degree of “deconstructing reality” here. The use of moving pieces around. The multi-media aspects, mixing things together. This was one of the first uses of the sea star, which continues to show up in my work as a reference object. I can’t really tell you why that is. Maybe it has to do with its bigger, identifiable form, contrasted with smaller moments of interesting surface variations. Maybe it somehow reflects my own sense of self to me. Maybe it’s the simple fact that I used it in this early, beloved piece of mine. I still feel the ‘mystic joy’ in this piece, coming from a time when I was just finding my artistic voice and style. It reminds me of an important part of myself. And I need that, especially in these other times and days when my life feels like it has been falling apart.

This morning, I asked the cards "How do I embrace what is joyous in my life?" I drew the 8 of Pentacles from The Wild Unknown Tarot. 💮 I drew the 8 of Pentacles. This spider spins a web not because he wants to, but because he is driven to do so. It is instinct and drive that call it to do so. This card is all about the drive of a creative endeavour and the need to create, the joy to be found within it. 💮 Sometimes, I forget what joy is and what I have to be joyful about. It gets buried under all of the other stuff and can get lost among it. There is joy that surrounds me, much like the web surrounds the spider.
