The Lone Wolf Art Show
I’m having an art show on the 11th of May.
I’ve been fortunate enough to take part in two previous art shows, but they were with other artists. This will be my first solo art show. I’m nervous but really looking forward to the experience.
It’s been wonderful to go through all the art that I will have at the show. The works available will cover years of work and there will be over fifty pieces…

The Thing Of It.
So, here’s the thing.
I had thought that the recent rejection of my novel Minotaur by a publisher wasn’t a big deal, but it kind of was. Last night, I was going to post about not writing novels anymore and just focusing on writing poetry, short stories and painting. The thing of it is, I had written and edited Minotaur with that specific publisher in mind. It took me three long years to complete…

Past Self - A Poem
I’m struck by my past
when I look upon a photo of myself.
In the photo, I’m forever
stuck in the pose of balance
during a time where
I was still trying to learn
who I was and dream of
what I wanted to be.
As I take in my form with the benefit of age,
I speak quietly to who I was,
letting him know there are tough times coming,
years where the darkness will feel all consuming.
I think…

Portals and Other Worlds - A Short Story
“Will it hurt?”
He was surprised by the fear in his voice. He’d been preparing for this for so long and had been psyching himself up for the promised adventure. It had taken him years to get to this point. That kernel of fear in his voice was surprising after all this time when he had been training to feel no fear.
Siobhan gave him a kind smile and she came closer to check the electrodes on his…

Ten Years of Magic - A Poem
When I was a young man,
I wished for you.
Magic was real to me,
even back then.
I wished for a man
who would carry love within him
and that he wouldn’t be afraid
to let that love shine out
through his eyes
and his gentle touch.
I wished for someone
who would love me as I am
and not ask me to change
who I was or who I wanted to be.
Lastly, I wished for a man
who would help me to…

Lessons Learned - A Poem
You are the first woman
that I knew in my life.
Not only did you raise me,
but you taught me lessons
that are more valuable
as the years go onward.
You taught me that kindness
is a very special magic.
Every time you soothed a hurt
with a kiss or a soft touch,
I immediately felt better.
I realized that kindness was like that;
it may seem hard to do,
but it’s the small acts of…

The Unknown Stages of Grief – A Poem
Grief is malleable.
It shifts and moves like water through the mind.
There are steps that have been forgotten.
Grief is a caterpillar in the cocoon,
and it has to completely
lose its form and become nothing
before it takes its final shape,
growing from muck and sorrow
into a being that is able to fly away,
giving colour and hope to the sky.
They speak of denial and anger,
bargaining…

Birds - A Poem
He says one word to me.
“Birds.”
I’ve seen him wandering the halls
of my dreams and when I try
to engage him in conversation,
all he says is that one word.
I wonder what the word means to him,
or if it should mean something to me.
There is joy in his eyes when he speaks that word,
and in my dreams, I look to the sky,
wondering if I can fly into the blue
while I’m in this dream…

Smoke in the Air - A Poem
“I still have that piece you gave me. You can have it back.”
It’s like I can see the words
floating in the air in front of me.
“I put your painting with the rest of the give away pile.”
I think of the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland,
how the words rushed towards her,
sent through the air like projectiles.
I’m reeling from the gut punch,
the metaphorical slap in the face.
Every piece…

An Ocean of Time - A Poem
When we met,
I knew that you had lived a life
beyond my understanding.
There was a wisdom in your eyes
and time immaterial moved within.
When you spoke to me,
it was with the voice of authority,
assurance and knowledge.
There came a time when you read my words.
When you had finished,
you looked at me with those eyes
that contained time itself
and you told me:
“You should never…

Sunlight Through Leaves - A Poem
I
am tired
of looking at life
through the branches of trees,
both my captor and my saviour.
However, it is only when I am here
that I’m able to look up and see the sun
shining through the leaves and I realize that
life shines brighter in the dark so I can
always
find my
way home.

Dear 2023
Dear 2023,
I’m not sure what you had in mind and I’m really not sure what to think about you, even now as the end of the year is a day away.
I think I went about 2023 in the wrong way. I kept waiting for something beyond feeling as if I was still living in 2020 and yet, three years later here we are. There is still Covid around us and the pandemic is still going strong. I think my mistake was…

Best Books of 2023
I don’t know about anyone else, but I had a lot of trouble with concentration in 2023. This took me away from reading a lot. There was just so much going on in the world, both the world around me and the one that surrounds me, that I got lost in my own thoughts. The books that would pull me out of myself were the ones on this list.
Normally, my Best Books list is a lot of fiction and perhaps one…

Three Wishes for Yuletide - A FREE Holiday Story!
Every year for the Holidays, I write and give away a new story. It’s my gift to all my readers that enjoy my work.
This year’s story was particularly challenging. An idea popped into my head, but I ended up writing way more than what ended up in the story. Mayhap there’s a novel there, but for now I want you to enjoy Three Wishes for Yuletide.
I wanted to do something different this year and…

Counting - A Poem
I
used to
count everything. It
gave me control, brought
me a kind of peace
in a world where I had
no control at all. The numbers would
spill over into everything. I began to count
fruit, clothes, shoes, pennies, words, books, vegetables, rings, freckles
until my mind was always filled with numbers mixed into
the words I would write and the paint I
would wield, all in an effort to…

The Sounds of Sleep - A Poem
As he falls
asleep, his breathing
is like radio
static. When I
close my eyes
to let slumber
claim me, I
can hear snippets
of song, the
cadence of people’s
voices, and the
soft salient sound
of snow in
his breathing as
the dial keeps
turning. When slumber
finally comes to
take me, it
is to the
rhythm of his
breathing with the
beat of my
own heart.
