hey guys so if you follow me on instagram you know earlier in the beginning of April i read this book that’s totally taken over me, like a full blown obsession!
It’s called Darker by Four by June CL Tan and please please go read it it’s so good!! If I had to convince you with other books/ media that it’s kinda like, i’d say:
•shadowhunters
•legendborn
•jujutsu kaisen
•tokyo ghoul etc
like it’s a mix of everything i love and has so many cool things, great characters and everything.
there’s this guy the author describes like Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle but i know most of my friends here are from the shadowhunters fandom so i’d say he’s also very like our Magnus too hehe he also has a cat!!
Ok this book is just too good yall pls check it out!!

4 stars
Well, this was a delightful debut and such a fun, entertaining read. Jade Fire Gold follows Ahn, a peasant girl with ancient magic, and Altan, a boy bent on getting his revenge. I heard this was a little reminiscent of a Katara/Zuko relationship and had Avatar the last Airbender vibes, along with inspiration from xianxia.
I really enjoyed both Ahn and Altan! I really loved how they each had their own story and purpose while their stories lined up, each stood on their own. So many books now have characters story rely fully on another character or can't stand by itself. It was said this was a slow burn kind of romance but I don't know if I completely agree with that, but I do however like how their relationship is at the end of the book.
Ahn, while mostly a great character, did feel a bit passive and a little eye-roll worthy near the end half when she was like magic is a curse, etc etc. The whole "betrayal" didn't quite feel all like a betrayal but overall, she was a good main character. I love that she was kind of a coward honestly at times and not immediately blessed with sword skills or anything. I loved her constant concern of her grandmother and I hope we get to see more of Ahn's adventures in the future.
Altan's story was very interesting, I liked his struggle about the having to live with the fact your ancestors did terrible things and that kind of generational guilt and need to do better. I also liked his thirst for vengeance and his tea-loving uncle Iroh, sorry I mean Master Sun, was a nice touch. I do think he kind of fell in love quickly and he doesn't completely remind me of Zuko.
The side characters were all so interesting as well and felt well developed and unique. And also I loved both the sapphic and gay representation, although I'd like to see more of the latter because it's hinted but not shown like the former is.
The pacing of this book was super fast and there was a lot of time jumps which is fair in traveling but sometimes it was just to move the plot along. I think I would have liked it to be a little slower so we could have really gotten more of everything. It often felt like a blitz because something would happen and then another and another. I do think the climax of this book gets a little messy and goes everywhere and happens too quickly.
I know the epilogue hints at something mote happening so I'm hoping we do get another book. Overall, while it has a breathless pace and doesn't really have anything super unique, it is fun, has good writing and has good characters.

Jade Fire Gold review
Tumblr media
4/5 stars Recommended for people who like: fantasy, magic, dual POVs, revenge arc, here-to-kill-you plots, reluctant allies, LGBTQ+ characters I'll start by saying there's a lot of moving parts to this book that, for a while, move separately. Ahn and Altan both have their own POVs, and both have only some of the information they need. There's a lot of interplay with who knows what in this book, and I think it plays out well. It can be tricky to keep a good balance of secrets and reveals, and I think overall this book manages that balance. Ahn is the catalyst for a lot of the things in this book. She's desperate to get away from her dying desert town, but she's also tied to her sick grandma. Luckily and unluckily for her, fate has other plans. As much potential as there was here, Ahn is pretty passive. I would've liked to see a bit more agency from her, and not just her generally going along whole-heartedly with what someone else suggests. There were also times when she did or thought things and I was like 'really? are you serious right now?' Like, she has almost 0 questions about some of the stuff that happens in the late-beginning part of the book, she just kind of goes along with it despite the fact that every alarm bell in her head should be ringing. This girl has absolutely no self-preservation instincts until things are already happening. Altan spent an awful lot of time thinking about the Life Stealer, it was almost his entire personlity. He was very much blinded by his own belief and it made it hard for him to see what was right in front of him. While this can make for an interesting character (and character arc), I don't think it fit well on Altan, mostly because he doesn't really have any development from 'stuck in beliefs' to 'I understand I'm wrong now.' Even after things change, even after he gets close to Ahn, he's immediately just like 'I still believe this and even if I seem like I believe different I don't'. I would've liked to see a bit more character development from him, particularly in regards to him changing his mind about the Life Stealer (and preferably before he falls in love with her). This felt a bit like instalove. Not in the sense of 'fall in love as soon as our eyes meet' but more in the sense of 'I don't trust you for most of the book but then you do something and I'm instantly in love' kind of instalove. I'm not a huge fan of either, honestly, but of the two I do prefer the former mostly just because there's nothing standing in the way of my belief. In the latter, I have to get over the fact that these two characters don't really like each other up until they're suddenly 'in love,' which is hard for me to swallow at times. The side characters had a lot of potential, and I think a short story (or stories) about some of them could be interesting. Tang Wei was interesting and I'd love to get some back story on her. Tai Shun was also interesting, and I think Tan used him well. the picture of a coddled prince, expect with less of a spoiled nature. He's just kind of oblivious to the real plight of people, but he's also compassionate and willing to learn. There was some good stuff with him for a conflict and I'm pleased that Tan followed through. I think the setup was there and it made sense based on what each character knew, and it actually paid off. I also enjoyed the plot with the powers of the Life Stealer. It's definitely one thing to think you're magical and another thing entirely to learn you're so powerful you have a title known as the 'Life Stealer.' Ahn has to really adjust to this and deal with the burden of what her power means. I think playing up the ghosts/spirits a bit would've been cool, and honestly I probably could've done without the inheritance/posession/ghost-talk-whatever that went on toward the end, but did find the overall concept neat.

Hi Leanne! Happy Monday and it's been a couple of weeks 💖 Amongst the 2024 fantasy releases I'm looking forward to reading (to name a few):
Goddess of the River by Vaishnavi Patel
A Feather So Black by Lyra Selene
Faebound by Saara El-Arifi
And I'm also intrigued about the premise of Darker By Four by June CL Tan!
I don't really have much luck enjoying ebooks lately, but I've recently picked up a copy of The Circus Train by Amita Parikh and really enjoyed it! How about you? What's your favourite read of the 2024 so far?
P.S. Your take on Guts and The Good Witch is perfectly valid!! Astrologically they're just not very compatible to earth dominants (bc too much fire / water)
P.P.S. Ahh I'm glad you've enjoyed Laufey's Letter to My 13 Year Old Self — I highly recommend the entirety of Bewitched: it's a very soothing and comforting record (and instrumentally it's a very Earth sign album to me) 💖
thank you for that list, i just added goddess of the river to my tbr - i remember kaikeyi is by the same author and i loved it. and same, darker by four is one of my most anticipated reads and i hope it lives up to expectations! i'm going to stalk your tbr, i trust your taste 100% <3
so far this year, i've enjoyed:
the fox wife by yangsze choo (i think you might like this one - check it out)
clytemnestra by costanza casati (i also think you'd like this??)
the tainted cup by robert jackson bennett
daughter of the bone forest by jasmine skye
root magic by eden royce
and yes haha guts is just way too loud for me and the good witch is so bleh, idk!!

Do you have any other celebrities you vibe with as much as BTS? For me, while I do have a general roster of green flag and red flag celebs, I've never actually stanned anyone until BTS. In fact I actually learned a lot about the music industry - bundling, charting, streaming, mediaplay plus the entire industry of KPop - after becoming a fan of BTS.
Nope. I enjoy plenty. But I don't have blogs dedicated to any other celebrities or idols. I don't follow them as closely. I don't keep up with everything they do/tell us about. Lol BTS are special for me. 💜 I don't even really follow any others on social media.... I DO follow plently of authors though and keep up with the book releases and what they muse about online for some of my favorites. Lol I DID buy a book once though simply because the other thanked BTS in her acknowledgements and told everyone to go stream Epiphany 😂 I love when my worlds mix like that! (Book is Jade Fire Gold by June CL Tan btw. It is published by HarperCollins though, whose workers are currently on strike, so please dont buy this book if you were going to until that is resolved to respect the picket line how we are able to)
Lol I do also generally have the same celebrities that are green/red flag vibes too.

18. do you like historical books? which time period?
i don’t particularly like historical fiction, tbh. i like classics written in a lot of time periods, but contemporary authors writing it don’t compel me.
19. most disliked popular books?
ok, founder of my chapter of the madeline miller hate club.... questions you definitely don’t know the answers to....
so i just googled ‘popular books on tiktok’ and the song of achilles, circe, a court of thorns and roses, and carry on by rainbow rowell seem to be the worst offenders.
