#katara thinks they’re freaks

Can you share any thoughts/headcannons about Ty Lee's sisters?
i’ve talked before about how i think that aang would date one of ty lee’s sisters and it would really freak katara out because she’s terrified of ty lee and she thinks that nothing good can come from involving himself in that family. but aang is actually like best friends with her whole family because of their air nomad ancestry and he’s trying to get them all into embracing their culture more and teaching them about their heritage. and maybe even one of her sisters does have latent airbending powers (ty lee has like, very minimal airbending ability, but her sister can actually move the air and all that) so he’s just overjoyed to help her hone that skill.
also this isn’t really about her sisters but i think that the chi-blocking girl from the legacy of yangchen who gets relocated to yangchen’s air temple for her own safety is a distant ancestor of ty lee’s. not because ty lee like epigenetically discovered the ability to chi-block (if anything i think ty lee discovered it on her own) but because i just think that’s a fun intersection and i do feel like fc yee incorporated it deliberately. anyway back to her sisters.
one of them dates aang, one of them is an airbender (possibly the same one?), at least one of them is also gay (just, statistically speaking), and unlike what the stupid comics will tell you, just because they all look identical does not mean that they wear matching hairstyles and outfits. they definitely each have their own sense of style and a complex about being unique and distinguished in their individual field. if anything i think ty lee incorporates their insecurities into her persona during her confession on the beach because she knows firsthand that the desire to distinguish oneself runs rampant in their family. like she’s clearly exaggerating as a deliberate performance of vulnerability, but it does come from a real place, if only through borrowing the anxieties of her sisters.
one is an accomplished musician, one is an accomplished mathematician, one is an accomplished engineer, one in an accomplished artist, one is an accomplished poet, one is an accomplished architect, and ty lee is the accomplished performer(/acrobat/fighter/liar). she could also probably be good at all those things too if she put her mind to it, but they all tacitly respect one another’s boundaries.
they come from a family that cares about nothing more than entrenching themselves within the fire nation aristocracy, and so their parents never really cared about their wellbeing as long as they were excelling. and ty lee was particularly favored because she’s excessively charming and knows how to get her way in any situation, and also, of course, because she’s the chosen playmate of the princess.
the pressure to always be perfect and provide an “in” for her family gets to be too much for her so she runs away to the join the circus, and she kind of assumes that they won’t even notice because she left behind six identical copies, but they get really worried because what will happen to their family now that they no longer have a direct link to the palace? so they’re really relieved to hear that ty lee is once again working with azula after news of the coup on ba sing se reaches the fire nation. and then they hear that she betrayed azula and got herself imprisoned and they’re furious. they actively consider disowning her, but then they figure if she’s already in prison for life, why bother. but then a few months later, they learn that now she’s friends with the avatar and the new firelord, which is even better than being friends with the princess, so they accept her back.
not that she wants to go home, but aang has suspicions about her ancestry that he wants to confirm so he makes her take him to her house and introduces him to all her sisters and her parents. they all show off their various talents to aang because they’re so nervous to be meeting the avatar, but he’s literally impressed by every single one of them. any time any of them do anything he’s just like “wow that’s awesome!!!” completely sincerely. he thinks ty lee’s family is so cool and has dinner with them whenever he can.
after the war aang gets really intent on finding all the remnants of the air nomad legacy through tracking down the air nomad refugees whose families assimilated into other nations over the past century. and he and ty lee (and her sisters) embark on this really in-depth archival project to collect all the traces of her family and families like hers as a way to honor and commemorate their cultural heritage. ty lee learns a lot about her family and what they had to do to survive (and how that mirrors her own life). and even though it’s nothing like it was before, aang finds a community of people who want to reconnect with their heritage and piece by piece, he slowly rebuilds what was lost.

This is what I think it would happen if Katara and Azula were telling people they’re dating:
.
.
.
—————————[Aang]—————————
Aang:
Azula: I think we broke him.
Aang:
Azula: I mean I killed him once but two times seems excessive.
Katara: I don’t think he needs that reminder right-
Aang: MONKEY FEATHERS WHAT WHY WHY HER OMG KATARA WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU SHE KILLED ME YOU WERE THERE AND-
Azula: I think I’m going to make some tea while he’s letting it out.
Katara: Bring some cookies.
Azula: Sure.
————————— [Sokka] —————————
Sokka [stepping closer to azula’s face]: Mmm.
Azula: What?
Sokka: What are your intentions with my sister?
Katara: Sokka please.
Sokka: Shh, I’m not asking you.
Azula: Sure.
Azula: She helps me to be a better person every day. She taught me how to love and how to love right even though I fuck it up on a regular basis. I want to be with her for as long as she wants me there. She’s strong, smart, caring and beautiful among other things. I just love her.
Katara [on the verge of tears]: ‘Zula
Sokka [crying]: That was…
Azula: Or maybe I’m a psycho and I want to destroy your tribe from the inside pretending I’m in love with the chief’s daughter.
Sokka: And there she goes.
Katara: She’s working on it.
————————— [Suki] —————————
Suki: She put me in prison.
Katara: I know.
Suki: She made our life a living hell.
Katara: She has changed.
Suki: People don’t change.
Katara: She was a traumatized, unstable and unloved child at that time. Believed me she changed.
Azula: Auch.
Katara: Sorry sweetheart.
Suki: …well I guess it’s your call after all.
Katara: Thank you.
Suki: Just one little thing… [looks at Azula] before you put me in that prison did you try to flirt with me?
Azula:
Katara: Azula?
Azula:
Suki: OMG how did you get Katara like that was so bad you had 0 skills
Katara: AZULA
————————— [Ty lee] —————————
Ty lee: Wait wait wait
Azula: For what?
Ty lee: Nonono wait wait wait
Azula: Are you having a stroke?
Katara: Maybe she is homophobic.
Azula: She’s a kyoshi warrior.
Ty lee: No but wait wait wait.
Azula: Agni
Katara:
Ty lee: YOU LIKE GIRLS THAT WAS AN OPTION AND YOU NEVER SAID SOMETHING FUCKING BASTARD YOU KNOW THE MASSIVE CRUSH I HAD ON YOU GROWING UP I TH-[and she kept screaming for a while]
Azula: We make the soft ones yell at us it must be some kind of achievement.
Katara: My turn to make the tea.
————————— [Toph] —————————
Toph: Congrats.
Katara: And that’s it?
Toph: What do you want me to say?
Katara: We don’t usually get a positive reaction at first.
Toph: I’m better than most people but I must say it’s kinda weird that you’re fucking a purple platypus bear.
Katara: What the hell are you talki-
Azula: And that’s why she’s the only one of your friends I respect.
Katara: You’re both so freaking weird.
Toph: Don’t be ableist.
Katara: I AM NOT-
————————— [Zuko] —————————
Zuko: Katara I get why Azula is messing with me but you teaming up with her? c’mon
Katara: It is not a prank.
Azula: Why wouldn’t she team up with me? I make great plans, I conquered Ba Sing Se and I had made legendary pranks.
Zuko: Katara it’s not funny.
Katara: Zuko we’re not joking.
Azula: Do you remember the time I made you think you were a big turtle duck?
Zuko: Katara please.
Katara: Zuko.
Azula: Oh oh or that other time when I pretended I couldn’t see you so I made you think you were invisible and you went into the kitchen naked to steal sweets.
Katara: Wait he did that?
Azula: What can I say? I’m good at pranks, babe.
Zuko: STOP ALL OF THAT.
————————— [Mai] —————————
Mai: You told Zuko?
Azula: Yes.
Mai: And he thought you were joking?
Katara: Yup.
Mai: Ty lee?
Azula: Also yes.
Mai: So between them who is the one who keeps screaming? My bet is on Ty, but Zuko can really get that high pitch.
Katara: Zuko is still in denial and saying that it’s a prank.
Azula: And Ty lee is the one who keeps screaming how much I love woman and why nobody tell her sooner.
Mai: She was unbearable about her crush on you until she join the kyoshi warriors. Now I think she’s dating one of them but I guess she needs to let it out the repressed years somehow.
Azula: I don’t blame her I know i’m gorgeous.
Katara: And very humble.
Azula: You didn’t deny it.
Mai: If you keep flirting here I want to say that I have a new knife I want to test.
—————— [Zuko (Second try)] ——————
Zuko: ‘Zula drop it already. Someone was screaming for a while and my head hurts.
Azula: Zuzu I’m not fucking joking.
Zuko: Yes, you are.
Azula: And they said I’m the stubborn one.
Katara: You know what fuck it.
[Katara takes azula by the collar of her shirt and kisses her hard]
Katara: DO YOU BELIEVE US NOW?!
Zuko: I know Azula would go far for a prank but I didn’t think you would roll with it. Still, I don’t believe you.
Katara: For Agni’s sake.
Azula [looking at Katara]: so… what are your thoughts of public sex to prove a point?
Katara: Azula remind me why I love you cause I’m about to kill you and your brother.

I get it, live actions aren’t for everybody and that’s totally fine. Not everyone’s gonna like it. But to shit on the stupidest things, or draw the dumbest conclusions??? Blocked. Y’all look dense as fuck. Views will be mixed as they always are, quit clogging up the tags with your negativity and find some chill 😂 The originals are still there to watch or read and enjoy…so go do that…it’s literally on the same app 👏🏻 I’m trying to be understanding I am, but some of y’all are so damn hung up you’re letting it completely destroy something you’d otherwise enjoy
Anyways!! Here’s some of the stuff I loved from the atla live action!
•cinematography, soundtrack, costumes - all on point
•getting to see the airbenders flourishing!!! Also the dude who played Gyatso?! Didn’t think I could love him more!! Even though it was painful as FUCKKKK getting to see the first invasion of the fire benders was an epic masterpiece
•speaking of, the first scene?? With the earthbender soldiers in the fire nation?? Iconic
•Omashu: unpop opinion I’m sure (bc y’all hate change but simultaneously hate when it’s carbon copy????????🤦🏼‍♀️) I loved how they incorporated like 3 or 4 episodes into one, and they flowed really well together. Jet is FOINEEE. Mechanist was perfect & his son is a freaking badass, amazing casting! Even though it was change, the secret tunnel scenes were still really freaking cool and the badgermoles were SICK AS FUCK. Also I love that Bumi was still cooky but not just randomly cooky? Like mans was run down from being king basically the entire war…which FAIR. And it made sense that he was peeved with Aang BECAUSE they were such good friends. Like the other avatars being mad at him? Yea that’s whatever. But for Bumi it was kinda personal. Also CABBAGE MAN WE MISSED YOU 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Oh! And the way they mentioned other episodes like they were lore when Zuko was trying to find Aang? That was an amazing way to tie back to the OG series
•I love how they incorporated the blue spirit, Koh, the fog of lost souls & parts of the ep where sokka and Katara got sick & Aang had to get them frogs - just reimagined it. Oh also Hei Bai! Yea, I loved that whole episode. Koh & Hei Bai were SCARY as fuck, it was awesome!!
•HAHN MY BELOVED…I ADORE YOU! Favorite character that they added/changed. Katara getting the other women involved in the battle?! Tui & La? The oasis?! 😭😭 stunning!!!! I also LOVEDDDDD Aangs avatar spirit that he turned into, literally perfect! And I loved the change that he gave himself over to the spirits wrath..fucking SICK. Also right before aang turned into the spirit/whatever that’s called, I was praying they’d do the line and thEY DIDDDD!!!
•Fire lord Ozai?? 😳😚 nothing needed to be said - perfection
•Kyoshi?! The Kyoshi warriors?! SUKI?! - speechless
•I like that they’re making more of a point to show how smart Sokka is! Mechanist calling him an engineer…I hope they play more into that! Ik they did a bit in the show with the subs (cartoon), but still
•”~hE rAn~” seriously my favorite line, I was DYINGGGG!!! The scenes with Zuko and Iroh, Zuko before the war meeting, the leaves from the vine being in the background at the funeral….ARE YOU FUCKING WITH ME?! Zuko’s crew being the crew he SAVED?! And when they find out they all do the fire nation bows to their prINCE?! 😭😭😭😭
I’m being fair y’all - things I don’t love/hope they change:
•this one I’m 50/50 on - I don’t love that they tried to give Kuruk a reason for disappearing. They tried to pull shit from Korra to make him look meaningful & not useless as an avatar and it didn’t hit for me
•some of the wigs: obviously we won’t see Yue again, but I wanted her hair to be white. I didn’t love the wig but it wouldn’t have been as bad for me if it wasn’t so grey. Also do NOT love Azula, Tylee or Mai’s hair. Ik they look just like the show but whether that’s wigs or their actual hair (I’m clueless) it needs some serious improvement. Azula’s looks great down, I just don’t like how big the side pieces are that frame her face when it’s up.
•Katara, my love, I am PRAYING part of your development is also going to be her becoming more outspoken and badass, bc this season we saw the tiniest of glimpses of it, not a fan (unless it’s a part of her development…she did grow up in a tiny ass tribe so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt)
• IK they’re going with a much more serious Aang, but pleaseeeee give us some actual moments of him being a kid. We saw that like twice 😭
•Dante is the PERFECT ZUKO, I will hear NO slander. However, I need him to be more of a dick. I’m hoping we’ll get that when he gets super desolate when they’re on the run & then we have Zuko alone & he has his inner battle. I need snarky dickhead Zuko, so you can truly see the big differences between what he’s fighting (himself vs. who his dad wants him to be)
Have fun kids!
In case I haven’t made it clear, idgaf if you disagree. I go so hard for these live actions because it’s fun! It’s just supposed to be fun and different and new. If you get so serious about it you’re ALWAYS going to be disappointed, there’s no way around it bc nothing is ever going to be as good as the original book, the original show, the original tale. OG atla is ALWAYS gonna be the winner, nothing will compare! So sit back ~relax~ and find some joy in the little things

Why you think that still so many bash kataang.
I found romance in ATLA way more natural than the annoying triangles in LOK
I can agree that romance is the weakest part of ATLA and LoK. It’s not a romantic show and that’s fine. I also think anyone can ship whoever they want, seriously, if some people think Katara is better with Zuko, that’s great. But there are some people who write essays on how Kataang was terrible and shouldn’t have been endgame and how their ship is the one that should’ve been canon. That’s what I find so freaking annoying, like, enjoy your ship, why do you feel the need to bash another?
I personally think the reason people don’t find Kataang as appealing is because they’re not attracted to Aang as they are to Zuko. A lot of people have said that if Aang had been a couple of inches taller or had hair, there wouldn’t be as many anti kataangs. And I honestly agree.
Again, there are people who make valid points and just enjoy other ships and that’s perfectly fine, enjoy yourselves. But why Kataang has so many haters, I’ll never understand. Like, I get it, you wanted your ship to be canon, but it’s not, and it’s been almost 20 years, so why are you writing an essay bashing the main character of the show you claim to love? Some people need to get a life.
Anyway, that’s my take on these ship wars. I’m not here to convince anyone that my ship is the only valid one or that it’s superior to everyone else’s. Or that you’re not allowed to ship anything else and if you do, you’re stupid or wield. I just wanna enjoy my Kataang content in peace with my fellow Kataangers.

sokka and katara’s eyes actually freaked the fuck out of zuko when he first joined the gaang
like growing up in the fire nation with people you see only having gold/brown eyes
and zuko didn’t pay attention much to their eyes because all his attention was on aang
aangs eye color didn’t shock him as much though bc grey? ok, he can get behind that
tophs? she was no eye color.
it’s only when zuko first joined the gaang is when he can finally relax and have an actually conversation with the siblings
he notices the blue orbs just….staring at him
he doesn’t like the pit in his stomach everytime they make eye contact with him
he actually thinks he is gonna lose it at boiling rock bc they’re dad too?? please i cant do this
he’s going insane until southern raiders
after him and katara’s field trip, when he would look in kataras eyes, the pit in his stomach disappeared
sees hakoda? the pit is gone too
ok we’re good then. no more being dramatic when you see blue eyes again. phew!
until he makes eye contact with sokka is when he realizes something shifted (and sweating more than usual)
he’s in love with him.

ATLA Live Action Stream of Consciousness (Episode 3, Part 1).
This rebel leader sounds like somebody but I don’t know who.
This very small plot twist has been ruined for me because I know what Lizzy Yu looks like.
Daniel Dae Kim as Ozai is awesome! He has a menacing presence that’s much more refined than just “RAAAAAH POWER!” One of the few things I think may have improved from the cartoon. And also what does he know about loss? Could be interesting.
AZULA I WAS ON THE FREAKING FLOOR SCREAMING I absolutely loved this intro. They’ve given her more emotional depth in this short clip than she got in like…all of book 2. And DAMN Lizzy Yu can act! She went through so many emotions so fast and barely said anything. The trolls who are criticizing her for not looking like a cartoon are not welcome on this blog. I hope the actual emotional depth keeps up.
Aang needs to stop teaching Katara waterbending let the girl be good at something.
“I never listened” FINALLY THIS KID GETS TO BE FUNNY
Gordon Cormier is adorable.
Dallas Liu continues to embody Zuko.
Zhao you devious asshole I’m glad he continues to suck. He does not need redeemable qualities.
Paul Sun-Hyung Lee’s lovingly disapproving looks are everything to me.
Omashu looks great!
Istg Katara may crush on this guy but OG Katara would never be this bashful. But who was he? He was hot!
CABBAGE MERCHANT
Wow Teo looks YOUNG!
Teo being desensitized to violence hits hard. I hope that kids being desensitized to violence becomes a theme (it happened in Azula’s scene too).
Gordon continues to do as well as he can with clunky dialogue.
Extended stay in Omashu could be an interesting change.
Sassy Azula we love!
I have already seen this clip so no surprises but I’ll share my thoughts anyway.
I knew this from interviews but Momona Tamada IS Ty Lee. She’s absolutely perfect.
I continue to love Lizzy Yu. She’s striking a balance of snarky but also clever and also you know she could kill you. I like that we get to see her be a little less guarded around her friends, and her feelings around Zuko/the throne make sense. Not sure if they’re going to make her all power motivated (wouldn’t love that) but regardless feeling like your work means nothing to those whose opinions you value is something I can definitely relate to, and it works for her character. Also her line about knowing which pieces to play? Chills!
More coming soon!

Lmaoooo zukka arranged marriage is SO GOOD to think about
Zuko: I have to do what’s right for my country. My entire life is suffering. I will never be happy again.
Sokka: holy shit my new husband is JACKED
(I’m partial to the idea that after they fall in love they like elope which is funny cause they’re already married but they didn’t mean it until now)
Omg yes this 😂😂😂
I can imagine them sitting the rest of the gaang down and being like
“Okay we have something to tell you… we’re getting married”
And everyone else is like ????? We know????
And they’re like “no no no like for real” And then everyone freaks out (in a good way) and chaos ensues
Also I love the grumpy/sunshine trope because it’s just so THEM. All of Atla sokka was like “cactus juice!” “Foo foo cuddlypoops” “This is Katara my flying sister” cut to Zuko “I don’t need any calming tea!” “You’re just a child” “I’m never happy”
I’m soft for them

Krew Gaang time-travel fic where Krew get knocked back in time to like the day after Zuko joins the Gaang because of spirit-power tech shenanigans that went out of control(the experimenting was done by bad people who saw what Kuvira’s giant mech could do and wanted to test further).
Right when they land, Aang realizes he suddenly can’t use airbending and earthbending. Korra and the crew have landed in a random fire-earth colony and she can’t bend water and fire(this is happening because two avatars at one time). Asami and Bolin figure out where and when exactly they are and decide to find Gaang to help them out as discretely as possible without telling everything about the future, and also to find a way back because the only thing better than one bridge between spirit & mortal worlds is TWO bridges.
Sokka & Asami get along like house on fire. They’re both bringing out the mad scientist in each other and there is a reason they didn’t exist at the same time.
Sokka: Are you a non-bender lightning bender???? Asami, shrugging: I guess I am. Maybe we can recreate it here.
Bolin is silently dying and freaking out about everyone. He sees Toph and is trying to be like “hey i got lava-bending!!” and is trying to show-off but also learn he’s just very confused on wtf to do. Toph is like “tf teach me exactly how you did that”. Bolin is very happy that Toph is bossing him around and Toph is living for this. Toph, sitting on Bolin’s shoulder trying to be the badgermole(which Toph said is real earthbender training she’s totally not messing with him): ‘Everyone should treat me with this amount of respect’
Bolin, enthusiastic: ‘Absolutely!’
Korra is calling Katara ‘Master Katara’ all the time and Katara’s so so happy about it. But Korra’s also pinching her cheeks and being like “wow you were so tiny! I mean you still are but you’re so SMALL!’. Korra and Aang are besties and Aang is finally relaxing because Korra’s obviously older and knows more, and she also has a stronger connection to the spirit world so she’s helping him out with that. She never thought she’d be teaching Aang anything. Aang’s seen visions of other avatars but seeing someone else alive is just, different. Makes him feel less alone, especially when Korra airbends(oh yeah Aang obviously teaches her all the games). Korra’s also very conflicted but also kinda glad that they didn’t let her go until she was older because she can’t imagine having to deal with all this when she was 12. She gets super-protective of all of them and kinda wants to stay and finish this for the Gaang but knows she can’t.
Mako and Zuko are being awkward in the corner like “we must be careful, vigilant, the Fire Nation is dangerous.” You think they’d get along but they DON’T. Mako can’t shake that the kid next to him is the former firelord, but he sees Zuko do something utterly fucking stupid w/ zero planning and is like “how did you survive to like 100 years old???”.
It’s always like-
Mako: What’s the plan?
Zuko: I break into a prison
Mako: That’s not a plan
Zuko: It absolutely is you child!
Mako: I’m technically older than you right now twerp

I REREAD UR INTRO POST. MP100. need to tell u this. consider aslfua mpo au. on one hand. esper cheol. his repression and social anxiety swag. listen 2 me… him playing w his powers in the countryside …. but then he doesnt use them at all anymore ….
ALSO TERU!JINSEOP
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SORRY I AM RESPONDING TO THIS LATW i had to let it marinate sufficiently in my head it was just so good…..
jinseop and teru both had to experience humbling but jinseop could definitely maybe use a little more LMAO free my girl song-i rest she deserves better T_T
also thank you so much for cheol psychic powers bc he has always been so autism to me (avoiding eye contact, extremely awkward, not very good with adults and being formal, struggles to process and express his feelings, shuts down and stops speaking when he’s freaked out, intimidating by accident, prone to outbursts when overwhelmed, quiet, uncomfortable around people, antagonized by the school system and the people around him despite being the victim because of a perceived “threat”, mi-ae is his adhd counterpart) and we all know that mp100 is about autistic people have psychic powers
mi-ae is kind of like tome? the energy and the goof factor for sure. she would be a non psychic who thinks psychics r so cool and her whole arc w cheol would be him thinking she only likes him for his abilities and he’s kind of like god fuck off!!! bc he feels like all anyone cares about is his powers whether they’re scared of him or they want to use him or they’re gawking at him and treating him like a zoo exhibit. everyone being scared of him bc they’ve heard he has insane powers and had an outburst in the past, but she genuinely just wants to be his friend bc she remembers being friends as kids and stuff and he starts using his powers in little ways to protect her !!!!!!! UUUAAAAHHHH
LIKE LIKE the first time it happens it s like he hasn’t used his powers at ALL in like years but one time mi-ae gets into trouble and someone kind of starts to threaten her and suddenly he uses just a little bit of psychic power to freeze the guy and be like hey dude. stop. AAAAAAHHH !!!!! literally thinking abt this in real time oh this post is going to be an essay. and then he starts using his powers to like. catch her when she trips or send a note across their windows or silly little things as he gets more comfortable using it again. ugh. i love them. and her genuine lack of fear of him and appreciation for who he actually is makes him fall in love like in the regular series OTL
and obv we don’t know shit about whatever the hell happened between them back in the country side STILL UGHHH but i would think it would b something like. they are like playing together and he’s using his powers comfortably and freely in front of her and it’s such a bonding moment god i love them <33333333!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and like in the future he likes to float her around to tease her (she also loves it and requests it because she gets to be taller than him and fly like an airplane LOL)
he will put her in air jail when she needs to settle down
i also feel like they might have a fight scene with some sort of “jason this isn’t you :( just look at me jason ok? it’s just you and me right now” kind of moment LMAO but it would actually be good and not corny, more like the scene from avatar with aang and katara in the desert
anyway THANK you for this i am going to think about it forever i hope i was able to contribute and expand upon it

The Big Picture
Vio & Shadow-focused Four Swords Manga Adaptation | Rated G
Chapter 4: Quest Updated
“Can you hear me?” asks the voice of Ganon, projected from some kind of unreachable void. Shadow isn’t exactly sure how Ganon’s remote oversight works. All he knows is that Ganon created him, Ganon’s will is truth, and Ganon will appear to him only when the time is right.
Not that Shadow cares, or anything.
“We can hear you,” sighs Vaati.
“I can’t hear you.”
Read the chapter (and very informative author's note!!) on ao3 or under the cut:
Author's Note: Finally, I’m working on this project again! I encourage you to re-read the previous chapters, because I just did a pretty significant amount of revision. The most notable change is the decision to not use manga dialogue verbatim—I’m still heavily referencing the transcription, but changing some language and phrasing to blend with my own style. Also important to note is the change of Vio, Shadow, Green, Blue, Red, Zelda, and Link Prime’s age, which is now 16 instead of 19. Working so closely with the manga, I’ve concluded that it makes the most sense for them to be around that age—mature enough to resonate with adults and potentially develop complex feelings, but young enough where it’s still believable that they would speak/act in line with the manga. To me, the True Manga Canon Links are 14-16 in the same way that, like, Katara, Sokka, Princess Azula, and Prince Zuko are ages 14-16. They’re not living in a world like ours, attending high school or something equivalent; they have very adult responsibilities, while simultaneously coping with teenage angst and the challenge of developing their own identities. And while Vio and Shadow stand out as the characters least believable as any age younger than 14, I do think the others—while silly in an cartoonish way—are not as a whole believable as preteens either. Like, Mabel and Dipper Pines are written as unusually clever preteens, and even they still seem younger than Red. Side note: cartoons are not my only frame of reference for media interpretation, but I am writing this specific thing like it’s a cartoon. Ultimately, I think that while I personally prefer writing a more mature interpretation, these characters can only be teenagers in something meant to complement and supplement canon. That said, I still fully intend to expand on the queer subtext between Vio and Shadow. Their canon arc reminds me a lot of the confusing, codependent, and ultimately life-altering relationships queer teenagers often find themselves in. This adaptation will explore Vio and Shadow’s journeys of queer discovery, both literally and allegorically, because that’s how I personally interpret the manga. Even if you’re not big on shipping these specific characters, I sincerely hope you can respect my interpretation and still find something that resonates. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this very belated update :)
Pure light transports the heroes to a chamber beneath Hyrule Castle. Link has been here before—very recently, in fact—but to Vio it somehow feels new.
“Are you well, heroes?” asks a soft female voice. Vio looks towards the center of the chamber, where a young woman floats trapped inside a magically crystal. She clasps her hands in front of her chest as if to pray.
“The Blue Maiden!” Red exclaims, his eyes wide.
“Did you save us?” asks Green.
“Link,” says the maiden, “something awful has begun. A terrible ordeal. Darkness once again covers Hyrule, just as in times of legend.”
Tell me something I don’t know, Vio wants to mutter, but decides not to antagonize the minor deity who probably just saved his life. .
“The shadow that took us was a phantom hero,” the maiden continues, “created by an evil demon.”
Vio perks up at that. The more he learns about that freak, the easier it will be to defeat him.
“It is a ‘Shadow Link. A dark reflection of you, but more powerful than any mere shadow.”
Vio attempts to process this. How exactly had Shadow Link been created? It couldn’t have been a similar process to himself. Vio is a fractured piece of a person, while Shadow Link is a dark reflection of a whole. No wonder he’s more powerful than the four of them—although combined, maybe the heroes could still stand a chance.
The maiden sighs, recapturing Vio’s attention. “It took all my might to send even that small light through the barrier. His power is not yet at its peak. You must stop him before that happens.”
“We’re no match for him now,” says Red in a defeated slump. “How can we ever beat him?”
Blue draws his sword. “We’ve gotta smash that barrier first!”
“That isn’t possible right now,” says the Blue Maiden. “The Four Sword has been cursed by Vaati. You must re-energize it, fill it with Life Force and the curse will be lifted. Then you can defeat the darkness for good.”
The four exchange uneasy glances. Finally, Green speaks up.
“Blue Maiden,” he says, “where is Princess Zelda?”
“I don’t know,” admits the maiden. “Weak as I am, I can’t sense clearly. But I can faintly sense her spirit… far, far away.”
Green nods, determined. “She’s alive. That’s enough.” It brings Vio relief, too, that this could all still be undone.
“Hold on, Blue Maiden,” says Green. “We’ll be back to save you soon.”
“Be careful, my four heroes.” The maiden closes her eyes tight, as if channeling the little power she has left. “Travel towards the Eastern Sea. I sense another Maiden within the Eastern Temple.”
Vio finds himself nodding, too.
They exit the castle through the dungeons, careful to remain undetected by Shadow Link’s army of monsters. Eventually they reach a path, which according to the sign leads directly from Castle Town to the Eastern Sea. Vio assumes that it’s meant to be followed by traveling merchants, over the course of days.
Red sighs loudly.
“Losing confidence?” Vio asks, almost playfully,.
“Yeah,” says Red, “how’d you know?”
“Because I am you.”
Green stares into the distance, filled with determination. “If Dark Link is our shadow,” he says, “we need to be better to beat him. Be more like father.”
“Yeah,” Vio smirks. “Right now, I’d give us a 50/50 chance.”
“But if we restore the sword we’ll get stronger!” says Red. “And if we can learn some teamwork—”
Blue scoffs, cutting him off. “I don’t care what it takes, we’re doing it.”
Green’s eyes sparkle in the daylight as he addresses his teammates. Vio can’t help but feel a little inspired. “Then it’s decided,” their leader announces. “Let’s go!”

“You’re late,” Vaati tells Shadow as he shuts the door behind him. The one-eyed demon waits at the far end of the conference table, as usual, scrutinizing the shade as he plops down into his own seat.
Steadying his heart, Shadow rolls his eyes. Reclines slightly, enough to slam his boots onto the table. Shoots Vaati a self-satisfied grin. “Sorry, I was busy. Doing things, in my body.”
Vaati’s eye narrows. The Wind Mage may now be free in the world of light, but he still lacks a corporeal form.
“You’re welcome, by the way,” Shadow adds. “For breaking the seal.”
“Don’t congratulate yourself just yet.”
The air in the dark room begins to crackle, an occurrence Shadow immediately recognizes. He removes his boots from the table and stiffens his posture.
“Do you have us on mute?” Shadow asks, helpfully.
Vaati scoffs. “He just said he can’t hear you.” Shadow just shrugs.
“I think I have you on mute,” says Ganon. “Hold on, this is—ah. Yes, I see.”
Vaati and Shadow lock eyes, unsure who should speak first.
“I still can’t hear you,” Ganon repeats, frustrated.
“Lord Ganon,” Vaati finally says, “we are both here.”
“There you are. Excellent.”
Shadow preens under his approval. “My Lord, I have good news. The Wind Mage has been successfully freed, and the Four Sword drawn. Princess Zelda is in our clutches. Hyrule Castle has been overtaken by our forces.”
“Our clutches? Our forces?”
Shadow winces. “Yours, My Lord.”
Ganon pauses for a moment. Shadow grips the edge of the table. “It seems you are serving your purpose, Shadow Link.”
Shadow grins. “You should have seen it, Link’s father was so fooled. And the four heroes—”
“Are dead?” interrupts Ganon, and Shadow’s heart falls.
“Not… as such.”
“Explain yourself, Shadow Link.”
Shadow deliberates each word before it leaves his mouth. “They had assistance, my Lord. The Blue Maiden, while contained, used her remaining light magic to repel my presence and transport them to safety.”
“I see.”
Shadow braces himself for his creator’s disapproval.
“Because the heroes survive,” Ganon says, “they pose a great danger to you.”
Shadow hangs his head. “I’m sorry, I can’t control how I—”
“You are not the perfect being I sought to create, Shadow Link. You are inherently flawed, weak to the light.”
And now the heroes know it too, Shadow realizes, ashamed. Despite all of his prior gleeful theatrics, he hadn’t even considered acting unbothered by the light. Not when it scared him so much, not when it caught his so off-guard. Pathetic.
“However,” continues Ganon, “your failure is not in your weakness.”
Shadow’s breath hitches. “It isn’t?”
“Your failure is in your admittance of defeat. You have the power of darkness at your disposal—use it wisely.”
Shadow takes a deep breath and nods. “Yes, my Lord.”
“You will need to travel in darkness to defeat them,” Ganon instructs. “Do not attempt to approach the heroes during the daytime.”
“But then how am I supposed to—”
“Have patience. Observe. Prevent the four heroes from gaining power, but do not make yourself vulnerable again.”
Shadow’s palms itch. He’s not a delegator, and patience is not one of his virtues. There’s no place for theatricality in this mission. It doesn’t sound fun.
“I won’t disappoint you,” Shadow reassures his creator, already plotting ways to disrupt the heroes’ journey. He could still make this fun. He could succeed, despite his weakness. He isn’t a perfect creation, but he can still be the next best thing.
Or would he be the next worst thing, considering the evil of it all?
“Your supervision is appreciated,” Ganon tells Vaati. “And Shadow Link—”
“Yes?”
“I am… proud of what you have accomplished. I look forward to your future successes.”
Shadow breaks out into an almost childish smile. “Thank you, my Lord!”
Ganon doesn’t respond, but his presence still lingers. Vaati and Shadow exchange a tired glance.
“You have to end the call,” sighs the Wind Mage. “Sir.”
“Right,” says Ganon, admitting no fault of his own. “Meeting adjourned.”

I believe the way Sokka deals with his trauma oscillates between; my feelings aren't important, and there is no way anyone else feels like this.
There is also a middle ground where 'I wish someone could hug me so I could break down' but also, the feeling of 'I don't want anuyone to seem me like that' rolling around in his mind, and thus leading to suppress everything that he feels and believing he is doing great even though he is not.
What, no im not projecting my trauma to poor characters. I just resonate with sokka a little!
ok rn the film studies professor who lives in my head is yelling CHARACTERS DONT HAVE FEELINGS. obviously fandom as a discursive mode operates under a very different analytical framework but like. you get it.
anyway i reject this premise altogether because i don’t think sokka would ever think about anything in terms of feelings. if he has an emotion he must then explain that emotion as a thinking action or opinion. for example, he doesn’t say to yue, “i feel attracted to you,” he says, “i think you’re beautiful.” and to him, every action can be classified either as logical or illogical. so katara stealing from pirates is illogical because the benefits (katara getting back a piece of her culture that was stolen and studying it to better learn waterbending) do not outweigh the costs (being chased down and executed by pirates), but toph pulling scams is dangerous yet ultimately logical because the benefits (having more money for food and resources) do outweigh the costs (possibly getting caught if they’re not careful). and of course sokka rationalizes his own illogical actions through faulty logical reasoning, such as “i must sacrifice myself at the boiling rock because it’s my responsibility to fix this situation that i caused or die trying.” his logic is sometimes flawed or biased (as all human subjectivity is), but it’s think “i think this and therefore i must do this” rather “i feel this and therefore i must do this,” which is how katara largely operates, as someone who is also far more in touch with her own emotions (a skill sokka lacks to a truly atrocious extent). sokka cannot locate his own emotions because he would first have to acknowledge that he has emotions, which to him is a completely abhorrent thought, even though of course he very clearly does.
sokka definitely doesn’t want anyone to see him break down or be vulnerable in any capacity (he’s only vulnerable in front of zuko because he doesn’t care about zuko and assumes that both he and zuko will die soon anyway), and he’s normally resistant to hugs except for with his dad (although in the finale he does join their group hug and then hugs piandao later, so yay for growth). but it’s true that he keeps his trauma so bottled up that he basically just completely represses it. forgets his mother’s face as a way to cope with his grief. and also in sokka’s mind he literally thinks he’s normal. he thinks that everyone else is a freak and thank god he’s the most normal one here. so it’s not even that he’s like “my feelings aren’t important,” he’s like “feelings aren’t important.” and it’s not that he thinks “no one else feels like this,” he thinks “thank god i don’t have to feel all those messy complicated emotions that other humans do because i know how to completely detach myself from my emotions. it’s awesome how being less human means being less vulnerable. there are no downsides to this logic and it is very healthy.” not realizing that it’s like. actually a very harmful coping mechanism, and also that if anyone is capable of dehumanizing themselves to the point of objectivity (highly doubtful), he certainly hasn’t. but like. try telling him that.

Instincts and lovebirds (p.1)
Sokka x firebender!OC
c/w: swearing!! this is my first time writing an oc x canon so this may or may not be the worst thing you’ll ever read??, basically Sokka and Zuya making fun of Katara’s crush on Jet. This is also pretty long by the way. Written in third person and I usually avoid using adjectives that have informations regarding looks but I want you to have an idea of how Zuya looks like.
a/n: first time writing in the atla universe<33, english isn’t my first lanuage, please tell me if I make any mistakes
also just like in my previous posts, my way of writing dialogue might be different than what you’re used to.
I haven’t introduced my oc Zuya on this page at all, so maybe I’ll do it in a separate post. I hope you like her.
Tumblr media
This whole encounter was weird. First, Sokka swore on his instincts that they all should walk instead of flying on Appa and then suddenly they’re being saved by a bunch of kids from being ambushed. Yet somehow, even though they were saved, something didn’t feel right. Zuya felt as if they were still ambushed or captured in some way. It was plainly uncomfortable.
Jet, Smellerbee, Longshot, Pipsqueak, Sneers and The Duke. They didn’t seem like a usual vigilante group. More like, wild children mixed with pirates. Zuya noticed some dirt on their necks and hands, they must’ve hardly ever bathed. Only Jet seemed to vaguely know what hygiene is. Even if Sokka’s instincts proved to be incorrect, right now the bad gut feeling he had was shared with his friend, Zuya.
- Psssst. - the brunette hissed to Sokka, while Jet’s friends were looking through the fire nation’s supplies.
- I’m right next to you, idiot. - he hissed back, but louder. - If you wanna talk shit about them I’m here for it, just don’t hiss like a wild animal. - the boy crossed his hands, looking at his friend.
- Okay, okay I just wanted you to get the goddamn hint.
- I know what you’re gonna say. - he begun.
- They look suspicious as hell. - they both said at the same time. Zuya tried her best not to point it out, so that he wouldn’t feel too special about guessing what she had on her mind. That would get into his head. Everything goes right into Sokka’s head, actually.
- Katara doesn’t think so. - Zuya choked out, pointing her head to the girl’s direction. Katara was thanking Jet for their help. Sokka seemed to run out of ideas on commenting this whole thing. He rolled his eyes. - I mean, it’s nice of her to thank him but her voice is high pitched and she’s kinda getting red.
- What? What do you mean? - Sokka squinted his eyes to see better, as if that was supposed to help in any way.
- Seems like your sister has a little cruuush. - Zuya teased, twirling her dark hair around her finger to mock Katara.
- Hell no, why this freak of all? Why couldn’t she perhaps, I don’t know, have a crush on Haru?
- We were in that village for two or three days, it’s better for everyone that she didn’t.
- We’re not gonna be here much longer either.
- It’s best if none of us has a crush. Any kind. It would only slow us down.
- Same thing! This whole Jay, or whatever his name is, isn’t all that. Just look at him. What the hell is that in his mouth? A straw? Grass? Is he a cow? - Sokka tried to come up with a creative insult.
- You’re just bitter because your life-saving instincts didn’t work. We should call them life-ending instincts, cause you know…cause we were ambushed.. - Zuya giggled. Sokka’s glare was digging into her. Even if he wasn’t very intimidating, she wasn’t going to test his limits right now. - No, but seriously. We should get out of here before we even have the chance to meet those guys closer. I know the type of mr. nonchalant, it’s not gonna end well. It’s for Katara’s own good.
They followed the group, because Katara and Aang wanted to see their secret hideout. It was pretty obvious their spot wouldn’t be on the ground, given that the trees were the tallest they’ve seen and tents or houses would be too easy to spot. However, Sokka didn’t really think about it.
- Soo, Zuya, right? Are you from the Earth Kingdom? - Jet asked. She was in the same attire she left her village, Kyoshi. She was taken in by the village’s members when she was just a young child, nobody really expected her to grow up to be a firebender.
- Yeah, I’m from The Kyoshi village. - she replied.
- Are you an earthbender?
- Actually she’s- - Katara begun.
- A non-bender! Just like Sokka. - Zuya corrected her quickly. The rest of the gaang didn’t question it.
- A, nice to know. Explains a lot. Hey, you two, grab those handles. - Jet suggested, turning to the ,,non-benders”.
- What does this thing d- - Sokka was cut off, being plunged into the air. Zuya couldn’t react in time, sharing the fate with her friend and soon grabbing onto the thick branches for dear life.
- Look, shit, look! - Zuya tugged on his arm.
- What?! - he asked, just now getting his head out of the leaves. She grabbed his chin and pointed him to look down, where Katara and Jet where smoothly flying upwards to the hideout. - I’ve had enough, we’re getting out of here as soon as possible. - he commented.
- They’re having their movie moment in there. - she said, noticing how Katara’s face is constantly red from all of the blushing. - How cute.
- You seem to be having a moment too. - Aang startled them. They didn’t notice him flying up. It slips their mind that Aang can literally levitate.
- A moment? We’re having a moment of hanging onto a tree branch. - Zuya said loudly, still recovering from the Aang jumpscare. Sokka turned away and climbed onto the wooden plank attached to the tree that led to the hideout.
They caught up with the group and Jet showed them around, talking about how amazing his ,,freedom fighters” are in being a pain in the Fire Nation’s ass. Sokka looked like he was in agonizing pain the whole time, and even more when they sat around the fire. That’s when Jet did his whole inspiring speech.
He sat down, separating Sokka and Zuya from Katara and Aang.
- Hey Jet! Nice speech.
- Thanks. By the way, I was really impressed with you and Aang. That’s some great bending back there.
- He’s great, he’s the avatar. - Katara explained. - I could use some training. - she was blushing again.
- The avatar? Nice. Very nice. - Jet seemed to be so pleased about that fact, it made them pretty uncomfortable. Sokka’s instinct must’ve worked at that moment.
- Sorry, but we need to leave tonight. - he said, cutting their conversation short.
- Yup, we should’ve left earlier, we can’t slow down. - Zuya added to back him up.
- Sokka! Are you kidding, I needed you for an important mission! - Jet whined.
- What mission? - Sokka’s ears perked up, even if he didn’t get too excited. A mission was enough for him to be convinced, knowing him.
- Tomorrow, we have to do a patrol and make sure The Fire Nation doesn’t attack or anything. - Jet tried to bribe him. - You could use a good night’s sleep for once.
- True. We’ll get to the North Pole, Sokka, let’s just use this occasion. - Aang spoke up.
- Only for one night. We can’t stay longer. - he gave in. - I’m going to sleep now, if you don’t mind. Me and Zuya stayed up all night to guard the supplies. We’re tired, right Zuya?
- Right. Exhausted.
- You can go to the hut on the left. - Jet said. - Goodnight!
- Goodnight. - Sokka spat out, before taking Zuya by the wrist and leading her away from the group.
- There’s no way you agreed to stay just to go on a mission, Sokka. - she hissed at him again. - It’s not even that important!
- Oh shut up, I’ll finally do something for once. Maybe they’ll give us some supplies for that.
- They won’t give us shit.
- Let’s just go. - he said, entering the small hut they were given to sleep in. They tried their best to ignore how annoying the newly met people were and just got ready for bed.
- Why did you tell them you’re a non-bender? - Sokka suddenly asked, when Zuya was brushing out her long hair. She usually wore it in two long braids, but this evening was a good occasion to brush it all out and distract herself.
- Gut feeling. They hate the Fire Nation.
- You’re not from the Fire Nation though?
- And how would they know that? It’s better to tell them the short version instead of explaining myself. I’m not planning on using fire here anyway.
- Good point. - he put his hands behind his head and laid down. - I’d love to see you firebend the hell out of them, though. - he added with a smug grin. It made her smile.
- Maybe I’d do that if I could firebend better. I only know a few moves. I think I might’ve noticed something. Sokka? Can you braid my hair?
- Yea…what did you notice? - he positioned himself behind her. Gran gran taught him how to do Katara’s hair when their mom died, he never really forgot how to do it.
- All of the ,,freedom fighters” have strange outfits. They’re so mixed. Jet has parts of the Fire Nation attire mixed with the Water Tribe’s clothes, or The Duke? He has everything in green and yellow, traditional Earth Kingdom colours.
- So, what are you saying?
- I’m just saying…don’t get into any trouble tomorrow. - she sat while he braided her hair. - Or your outfit might be worn by one of them soon.
- Thieves are the last thing I wanted to encounter. Still, why would I get into trouble? I’ll just pretend to be their friend or somethin’- he asked, already aware why exactly.
- You know damn well why. You’re going without us on that mission, don’t try to act like a smartass.
- I won’t. I’ll try to, at least.
- Promise me you won’t. I don’t wanna have to run to save your sorry ass again.
- Again? Excuse me. - he tugged her hair on purpose.
- Ow! Yes, again. If I wanted go count all of the times where I had to drag you out of someone’s hands I’d run out of fingers. - she grabbed his hand to stop him. Sokka scoffed at that. - Can I braid your hair too?
- No, my head is pounding when you do my braids, they’re too tight.
- I’ll be more gentle? - she smiled, just as he was finishing her own braids. He sighed.
- Just this once. - he finally agreed. - Don’t make them so tight.
- I’ll try.
- You don’t look exhausted. Is Sokka hitting on you again? - Katara asked when she entered the hut with Aang. She was in a good mood, who wouldn’t be if they found themselves a love interest?
- Not today. - she pretended to be let down. Or she wasn’t pretending.
- Just for the record, I’ve never done that. Focus on hitting on Jet, Katara.- he insisted.
- Stop moving so much or else I’m making the braids tight.
- You can’t deny it. Back in Kyoshi, Omashu and when pirates tried to take us. - Aang counted on his fingers and then shoved them into grumpy Sokka’s face. - And that one evening?
- You forgot the boat thing. - Katara reminded.
- Right, boat thing too. - Aang smiled like the cute kid he is.
- It wasn’t intentional. My charm is unbeatable, what can I do about it? Happens on it’s own.
- All of you should go to sleep. - Zuya said, carefully making small braids on Sokka’s head. She finished up and for the rest of the evening, thankfully nobody brought up the topic of Jet and his friends.
Zuya was abruptly waken up by Sokka, right when he came back from the mission. Katara and Aang must’ve already gone somewhere.
- Wake the hell up Zuya, they’re psychos! - Sokka shook her by the shoulders.
- Stop shaking me! - Zuya’s green eyes were barely open and the boy was still blurry in her vision.

I honestly don’t think they’re gonna do Kataang. Unless they decide to shove it into later episodes ( and even then I’d be worried if they’d do it right cause the buildup in season one was the freaking foundation!
I remember staying up LATE (9pm was late for little kid me, but I digress) on a school night watching the series finale, just hoping to see those two FINALLY get together after seeing them grow with each other was the best thing in television history to me.
And it’s not just the romance for them. The friendship. The familyness ( with Sokka too) and all of it is just gone
The heart, of the show is gone and I hate that
Same... I'm getting the vibe that they're not gonna go through with it. If they do, it'll probably be in season 3. If it gets two more seasons, that is. And by that point Gordon will probably be like 16 or older, while Kiawentiio will be 18 or older. I still don't know if that would work either.
Part of me wonders if this (among many other things) is one of the big reasons Bryke left the project - they've always staunchly supported Kataang.
I also remember watching the series finale the summer after my fifth grade year (with the little Sozin's Comet logo in the corner on my square TV and everything) and just sitting on the edge of my seat praying for Kataang to become canon lol. I had a crush on Aang as a kid and always kinda projected myself onto Katara because of this (and because Katara is just a great character and role model), so I was very much an avid shipper of them haha.
You're very right that it feels like it doesn't have the same heart that the original does, especially when it comes to all relationships. The Gaang doesn't feel like family at all, even though that's what they're supposed to be. It just feels like they're all friendly acquaintances at this point. Zuko and Iroh seem to be the only characters who have a realistic and fleshed out relationship that gets you invested.

is it just me or does the majority of atla's fandom care about mostly about FN esp zuko and azula while completely discarding the other characters and themes of the series
It's not just you, and it's not just the fandom either. Bryke, and some of the other writers, clearly have a preference for the Fire Nation stories, Zuko's in particular.
It was a combo of “Give the people what they want” and “The people want what they are given” and that came to be because of a few things:
Good planning and the quality of the writting
The writers changed MANY things from their original idea for the story, and Fire Nation, while still affected by it, seemed to never lose it's main focus: Zuko rebelling against Ozai and joining team Avatar.
The Gaang meanwhile went through plenty of changes. Toph was originally a super tough guy, not blind, and would be in a love triangle with Katara and Aang. Suki was meant to be a one-off character. Katara went from struggling with waterbending to suddenly being able to do some serious damage while fighting Pakku. The episode that would be based on Aang's parents was completely scrapped.
So many changes, many of them at least minute, led to some storylines of the Gaang being more truncaded, rushed, botched, or just not living up to their potential. Again, that applies to the Fire Nation and Zuko's arc as well, but not to the same degree as the rest (at least not until the comics and Korra, when any quality was long gone from any storyline of any character and nation).
Aang's connection to Zuko and to the Fire Nation
There were plenty of parallels between Aang and Zuko throughout the seasons, and we later even found out that Aang is the reincarnation of Zuko's great-grandfather. Naturally, that gives Zuko A LOT more screentime - he is basically a villain protagonist from the start of the show. And since people tend to think of the more complicated, or sometimes straight up evil, character is the most interesting one, it led to most of the audience thinking the Zuko side of the dynamic was the better written one by default.
We can also not forget that Aang's most recent past life, Roku, is the one he interacts with the most, and he was not only part of the Fire Nation and of Zuko's family, but he was directly involved in the start of the war - which is the main plot of the show.
And on top of all that, Aang also genuinely LOVES the Fire Nation and is one of the few people alive who remembers a time when the war was not a thing and the Fire Nation was radically different. The comparisson is important for the story and it's protagonist, and thus it draws even MORE attention to that part of the story.
Villain bias
The Fire Nation are the bad guys in the story, but we know that’s something that can get people’s attention and spark their curiosity. Why did the Fire Nation attack everybody else? How big is the list of horrible shit they did? How powerful are they really? Is there even a way for Aang to stop them? What’s gonna happen to them once/if they are defeated? Can they really dominate the world? Can they really live peacefully with the other nations once the war is over?
It’s natural for the audience to be intrigued by the bad guys, even without agreeing with or liking them. The fact that Fire Nation is also invading other places and chasing the hero means they’re part of the conflict of nearly every episode, and views are constantly waiting to see what they do next - regardless of them being excited for it or dreading it and wishing the fuckers would go away.
Antagonists usually get a lot of screentime, and the very plot of Avatar requires the Fire Nation to constantly be either shown or talked about for the level of threat to the heroes to be made as clear as possible.
The lack of development of the other nations
That one is pretty self-explanatory. The Water Tribes and the Air-Nomads weren’t given much screentime, which kind of makes sense considering, ya know, the freaking genocide. However, the writers could have used some “flashback episodes”, simmilar to The Storm, to help the audience be more invested in them and care about what is at stake. The conflict is more centered around the Fire Nation attacking the Earth Kingdom - to the point that the war is pretty much considered won once Azula and Zuko conquer Ba Sing Se.
Familiarity
This is likely the most important one.
1 - While writing about an abusive, dysfunctional family and about a war isn't exactly easy (read the comics to witness how badly that can be screwed up), it is still easier than writting about how the last survivors of two genocides get by and deal with their trauma. The villain seeing the error of his ways and changing sides, and the brave hero rebelling against the injust system are popular tropes and did NOT start with Zuko's redemption arc, no matter how much the fandom tries to convince itself that it did. Brian, Myke and the other writers likely grew up with that kind of story, as did most of us, so naturally they'd be better at writting it, and most people could understand it, since we saw it a million times before.
2 - The Fire Nation is heavily inspired by Japan, and Japanese culture is more "mainstream" than Inuit or Tibetan culture, thus the writers were more familiar with it - to the point that Avatar had WAY more simmilarities to anime than most western cartoons. And once again, what was the non-fire nation arc people seemed most invested in? Ba Sing Se. Which is famous for it's great walls, having the most people and a culture that is fucking ancient, and when Iroh took a knife from a general during his siege and gave to Zuko, said knife had a "Made in earth kingdom" joke. Doesn't it sound some other asian country that most people have at least some surface knowledge of?
3 - The writers are americans, and the Fire Nation has some american inspiration. While it was not at the level of "Let's make Not!New York a thing in this pan-asian world!" yet, the writers said they based many things about the Fire Nation off of the US - most notoriously the military shit, and the habit of "We know what's best for everyone, the rest of the world should be like us." Once again, being familiar with what you're writting makes it more likely that you'll do a better job at it than at writing about something you don't really know much about.
Conclusion
Zuko and the Fire Nation became as popular as they did because of a perfect storm of very especific factors - some that were inevitable due to the narrative itself, and some that were caused by flaws in the writting.

do you lile the comics or do you think the characters or are they OOC
Aang in the promise reminded me of zuko in season 1.
Hotheaded, even kinda nationalistic with no social awareness. How comes he completely forgets katara
Oooh I love that question.
First of all, starting with the Promise. Yeah, they are mostly out of character in that comic. Aang agreeing to kill Zuko after we spent the whole finale establishing he refuses to kill? Like, that’s baffling. Plus, Zuko acting like a child, going to his father for advice and marching his army to Yu Dao, instead of sitting down with Aang and talking it out? We spent 3 seasons watching Zuko grow into a mature young man and he just goes back to his old ways in the first comic? That wasn’t great. Although I did like the overall conflict of the series, the characters were not done right.
But, I wouldn’t call Aang a nationalist. You have to remember, Aang lost his entire culture and he’s the only one who’s left to preserve it and to pass it on. Seeing people blatantly disrespecting his culture and using it as a costume made him see things differently. He was just afraid that his way of life would be lost if he let the nations clash. Yes, his way of thinking was wrong but it was also justified in the context of the comic. Of course he came to a realization that he cannot gatekeep his culture and people from different nations should be able to live together. I think it was a good character growth for him. Which is a lot more than I can say for Zuko, at least.
Now, I’m not sure I understand what you mean by saying he forgot Katara? Are you referring to the first comic? Cause they were together the whole time and I feel like her opinion and counsel were what mattered the most to him. In terms of Kataang, I think they were written really well in the comics. They have cute little romantic moments and also moments where they realize they’re pretty much the ones responsible for the fate of the world and really sit down and think things through and reach a decision together. I love that.
I could say Aang kinda forgot about Katara in the Rift for a while there, but it’s kinda minor. Other than that, in every other comic, they’re always together and written well so I like Kataang in the comics a lot.
Overall, the comics are not for everyone but I do enjoy them, I think they’re cute additions for the universe if you don’t think too hard about them. They’re pretty entertaining, for the most part.
My favorite one is definitely Imbalance, it just balances the characters perfectly, everyone gets a moment to shine and the main conflict is actually really ineteresting and sets up the main conflict in Korra really well.
My ranking of the comics if you’re interested
1. Imbalance - like I said the main conflict is awesome and the characters feel like themselves, Toph is a freaking badass in this one.
2. The Rift - I love Toph in this, she really gets to shine and again, Aang’s inner conflict is what makes this comic for me. The way he wants to preserve his people’s memory and culture in middle of all the inevitable progress.
3. The Search - it’s cute. Just the Gaang on an adventure, that’s always fun.
4. The Promise - it has its problems but I like the conflict after the war, I think it’s very nuanced and interesting.
5. Smoke and Shadow - Kinda boring
6. North and south - it was a bit repetitive and the main conflict seemed a little bit silly in my opinion. Katara is also a little out of character.

The Headband Re-Watch
This is a funny episode. I don’t think I have anything too groundbreaking to say about it, & I wouldn’t call it a favorite, but I always have fun with it. I know it’s a rip off of Footloose but I’ve never seen the real Footloose lol. I do kind of like that Aang rebels against the Fire Nation culture through something as universally human & expressive as dance - it’s a nice antithesis to the repression the Fire Nation seems to encourage. This is also the first & only time we get a look at regular Fire Nation culture & the indoctrination they grow up with. It’s an interesting glimpse at the everyday life of Fire Nation civilians.
Aang humiliating Hide is hilarious. +500 iconic behavior points. I also think this episode presents interesting evidence for those of us who like to write modern high school AUs. Aang’s role is clearly a bit of a class clown & also very much a popular kid. He instantly gets the entire class to like him enough to want to come to his illegal dance party AND to cover for him when they get caught. This kid has a very high charisma score. I’ll also admit that this is kind of a cute Kataang episode. I still don’t personally ship it but I can’t say anything against it in this episode. The party scene is funny & cute. The best thing about Kataang in this episode is that Katara is shown reciprocating Aang’s feelings. It’s obvious she has a bit of a crush here.
Katara & Sokka disguised as Aang’s parents will never fail to crack me up.

Sapphire & Waang Fire my beloveds. They’re so funny & dramatic. I always cast the Fire Siblings as theatre kids & I stand by that ‘cause there’s a lot of evidence for that too. But have you considered? The Water Siblings are also theatre kids. +500 iconic behavior points each for Sokka & Katara for their hilarious disguises.
Zuzu is a hot mess (affectionate) in this episode. I feel like for a while I was trying to pretend I wasn’t a blatant Zuko apologist but I totally am & I think maybe I should just embrace it. This is probably the episode where Zuko is the most asshole he’s been yet but I still feel bad for him. It’s just…. Is he a complete jerk for melting down while visiting Iroh in prison - a prison Iroh is in because of him? Yes. But also…. I mean, the thing is, you guys, he’s a teenager trying to undo a lifetime of freaking indoctrination. Iroh didn’t tell him to join the Avatar until it was literally showdown time. Iroh had already started to question the Fire Nation & consider the importance of balance, but he & Zuko didn’t talk about any of this! From Zuko’s perspective, siding with Azula is the exact thing that always would’ve been expected of him. I just feel bad for him. I still feel awful for Iroh too though, rotting behind bars because of his nephew who he views as a son… ouch. And honestly, I feel like the thing that hurts the most about this for Iroh isn’t even that he’s suffering personally it’s that he hates seeing Zuko choose his father & the Fire Nation after everything they went through.

Huge fan of shots that put a character outside of bars behind the bars so it’s unclear who’s imprisoned.
I love cinnamon topography.
Also, I love Mai & Zuko’s little picnic.

After watching Wednesday, Mai calling the color orange disgusting as they watch the sunset reminds me of something Wednesday would say. They’re just so cute.
I like how Azula gets Mai to go away by telling her Ty Lee’s braid is tangled. Hey, ladies gotta have their priorities! Also, once again Zuko’s inability to lie pops up. Azula is literally being such a considerate little sister by warning Zuko about visiting Iroh. I don’t see how anyone could view this any other way. She’s looking out for her big brother & I think that’s really cute.
I have nothing else to say about this episode. Tune in next time for more rambling recaps!
