and the thing is, i'm not saying kaz isn't also a serious person. he's very serious. he's deeply committed to the bit, usually at the detriment of everyone around him. he has such an annoying sense of humor. like, what else is he supposed to do? he's a little jewish boy trapped in a dickensian nightmare. what can he do but laugh at himself and this whole situation? he clearly doesn't find it funny at all, but at the same time, is constantly making little remarks only for the purpose of amusing himself. and inej. and also for inej as well. let me put inej here a third time for emphasis. anyway.

like if you think about it, jesper is more obvious with using attention-seeking and humor to run away from reality, but kaz wouldn't be friends with jesper if that really bothered him. he needs that. he's not going to admit it, but jesper sure is still here, isn't he? kaz and jesper undercutting each other and chuckling to themselves is literally how they get through the day, sometimes. this isn't about how jesper makes inej laugh more and kaz is always at least 50% seething about that. he's seething about everything. that's a man who is always at a low, roiling boil. listen. listen.

look. i'm trying to say people can be many things, as i made a funny little post about him doing magic tricks but don't want him to get flattened. so while kaz is very wet and traumatized, he's also surprisingly funny and bombastic. all the crows are like this, but i don't feel like going any further into it. striated. have layer

A cute, random idea I had:

Kaz will do random things to make sure Jesper pays attention when he's explaining stuff (AKA because Jesper has ADHD energy lol.)

He'll spin a coin on the table repeatedly while telling him what he's supposed to do that night at the Club because Jes will get distracted by the table he's at otherwise.

He'll randomly do sleight of hand while he explains an intricate job- something where he makes, like, a pen disappear in one hand and then reappear prob- and do the trick over and over because he knows Jesper will literally stare at him the entire time if he does.

Sometimes he'll tap his cane against something or drum his fingers on it in a weird pattern so Jesper will look back at him when he starts to lose focus in busy places.

(He's ridiculously good at keeping him engaged at this point.)

wesper: eat your young is just perfect everything from symbolism to lyrics is chefs kiss. “putting food on the table selling bombs and guns” “theres money to be made” the whole beginning of their relationship was spent planning a heist to break into the most secure place in the world. they had a lot of their almost moments or almost moments interrupted by something happening with the heist.

helnik: they are the most hozier couple to ever couple. its so hard to just pick one song but im gonna have to go with foreigners god. cause “scream in the name of a foreigners god, the purest expression of greif” “all that ive been taught, and every word ive got, its foreign to me” ??? are you kidding its them.

ninej: like real people do. i dont even have room for quotes because i need to say this. there’s something about listening to that song and imagining two deeply traumatized women healing themselves and helping the other heal. it makes it even sadder to think that if nina wasnt grisha and inej was never taken there would’ve been nothing to “bury” as said in the song.

kesper: from eden is so incredibly them. “theres something tragic about you” “innocence died screaming” “theres something broken about this” its just so perfect because jesper entire fascination with kaz is the fact that hes a complete mystery with an obviously tragic past that he wants to understand.

from what i remember all the relationships in shadow and bone are toxic wastes of drama and meanness (with the exception of Genya and David maybe) horrible with both parties being vile towards each other like Mal and Alina? show and book codependent and in the Mal is the worst (I would not have been surprised if he did something physical). Darkling and Alina? both she see's him as subhuman. and she is an idiot so their ideals don't go together
