Made an AMV for The Collector and King set to Kids by MGMT. It was my first time making an AMV using pre-existing video clips and I tried to have them line up and be thematically relevant to the lyrics while also ordering them in such a way to create a sort of narrative. I hope I did a good job!

owl house s1e1 notes

(i was/am a massive gravity falls fan and this heavily influences my first impressions. i have no doubt the show will establish itself as something different and wonderful, while still making me nostalgic. also, i spent like 7 years wanting to go into animation writing, so some of my notes are also influenced by that.

that said, a lot of these notes are just stupid comments and not actually meaningful or insightful.

i watched this pilot when it first came out in 2019, and maybe four or five more episodes until i stopped to wait for the entire show to air, so i remember some things, but not much!)

the good witch azura book cover has characters resembling luz, eda, and king. nice touch!

i like how luz asks to stay in the boiling isles. usually young protagonists are put in Situations (the twins being forced to spend the summer in gravity falls, for example) and then rise to the occasion. luz is given the option to bail and is just like, no, actually i want to see where this goes. it's effective in establishing both positive and negative aspects of her character: confidence in her own weirdness and a refusal to conform, but also being perhaps a little too quick to take the extreme escapist option. i'm very excited to see how she evolves over time!

actually, more on previous note: if you compare it to tourist trapped (gf pilot), the ending moment that sets up the rest of the show is dipper accepting that gravity falls could potentially be an interesting place to spend the summer, while here, it's luz going out of her way to request a place in the boiling isles. i like that.

Amv idea that I'll never make becasue i don't have the tools/skills/know how: MK meeting the Lady Bone Demon, but to the tune of "In the Hall of the Mountain King"

Like the slow beginning is when mk is hiding from spider queen, and then when the music starts to pick up a little/ get a little louder is when he actually runs into lbd, and that moment when the violins start sounding panicky (1:30~) is the moment when he realizes he was about to destroy the furnace , and then those big vBP! .. vvBP! (Starting at 2:11) Sounds are the parts with the bigs flashes and the whole "he chose the wrong successor" bit and at 2:21 is when Spiderqueen interrupts and then mk running away. (And of course the scene probably doesnt overlap perfectly, so the scene might have to be sped.up or slowed down to match. But like. I feel like it fits pretty good.)

I couldn’t sleep so I tried to put together an amv kind of thing for my Good Vlad AU. Sorry for the crappy quality, I don’t have the best video maker plus some audio ended up clipped weird which I had to do to try and make it sound like they were saying things in a totally different context.

Anywho, in this amv Jack and Maddie are feeling nostalgic cause they miss Vlad and they’re relieved things are at least ok between them after the accident since they both apologized to Vlad for what happened, especially Jack who is the most responsible for what happened. Just ignore that the first clip is technically of future Vlad’s hands holding this picture. Oh and when the lyrics sorta match up about Vlad liking Maddie just as a quick disclaimer his feelings are PURELY PLATONIC, aka it’s only admiration for her as a person.

Next up, when they suddenly get an special invite from him to come to his castle for their college reunion of course Jack and Maddie are excited to see their old college friend! As for Vlad, he’s not bitter like in the original series but he is a bit awkward and unsure how to tell them the truth about himself. But then those worries kind of go out the window when he discovers their son Danny is also half ghost. Also, Danny had a better impression of him before he found out about him since Vlad was really acting like the cool rich uncle to Danny and Jazz but they had a misunderstanding the night before the reunion and Vlad had to carry Danny back to his room unconscious after defending himself from the cranky teenage halfa.

Fast-forward to Vlad waking up the Ghost King like a dingus but this time it’s to remove him as a threat once and for all for Danny’s sake, not for some evil plot. Well, not exactly anyway even though he does want the crown and ring for his ghost relic collection. When Danny shows up to see Vlad in his house Vlad apologizes for showing up there unannounced since he had planned on visiting Fenton Works under better circumstances, but it’s nice showing that Vlad and Jack actually do get a along since they let bygones be bygones as he weaves a lie about how he ended up there and says how he appreciates his old friend’s kindness. Also, just fyi Maddie is mad at him for being reckless and getting hurt instead of before when in the show Vlad was a total creep to her and Danny in “Maternal Instinct.”

Still, behind the scenes Vlad has been doing a couple of sort of underhanded things for good reasons this time like making Valerie a ghost hunter too to help relieve some of Danny’s burden. And Vlad is genuinely impressed with her skills and didn’t want to waste the chance to tell her he’s proud of the work she’s done so he pulled her aside to do that.

As you can probably tell the song lyrics don’t really match up for the most part but again, this is just something I slapped together for the heck of it since I needed a distraction. Flawed as it is, I hope you enjoy it!

Do you have any songs you associate with NiGHTS?

Due to AMVs from back in my earlier days in the fandom (lurking and never posting anything or even joining forums because anxiety), A Neverending Dream by Cascada and The King of Lullaby by Eiffel 65 (yeah, the 'I'm Blue' guys). Both of these AMVs can still be found easily on youtube! Both are super old now, from 2007.

From the same time period, I don't exactly recall how I found it (quite possibly lurking on the old NiD.com forums), I stumbled upon Japanese band by the name Sound Horizon. Some of the instrumentation of their songs struck me as very NiGHTS-esque. I made a super rough windows movie maker AMV back in the day to this one here. I do recommend these old albums, they're pretty darn good.

Beyond these, not really anything in particular. Maybe a few songs from Owl City (again, because of old AMVs) but not a whole lot more than that. I did get struck with some inspiration for one of my fics (can't recall which one) while listening to this Pendulum mix, and Isle Unto Thyself was inspired by Hawaii Part II's song of the same name though.

Bambi. Look, I was four, and Drip Drip Drop Little April Showers had thunderbolts and lightening.

Kingdom Hearts! This was actually back when FF.net had a good amount of fic, but a lot of it was hosted outside in other websites (there were no tumblrs).

I like to collect pretty rocks and other interesting nature-y things, like shells and small pieces of driftwood and feathers.

ART & COPYRIGHT

Aaaaah! I think I won't gonna make a lot of artist friends with this.

But whatever, I need to say what I have in the heart... to share it, even if I may be wrong.

Just keep in mind that it's just a personnal point of view, and that I respect the fact that you may think differently of me.

Copyright... is not a PROTECTION for the artists... not any more.

Copyright is just a right to allow the artists to complain at the first - silly - reason.

What makes me think that?

Well, there is one question to ask first: what is the point of making art? What is the point of posting art on Internet?

For me, the answer is simple and can be resumed in one word: SHARING.

- We, artists, post art to "share" our work, our passion. Sometimes, some arts or specialities need to rely on other artworks. We can need references, sometimes. We can need a music for animations, if we are an animator... or an animation, if we are a music maker and want to accentuate the theme of our song with the help of an AMV montage. Whatever we are, a simple drawer, a musician, a singer, an animator, a Youtuber... we ALL need to WORK a lot on our creations.

- We, artists, also "share" our imagination. And, wether we like it or not, we can corrupt or act on the imagination of our watchers.

We, of course, need to be protected, as artists. We have to be protected against TRUE plagiarism (or TRUE art theft, if you prefere and don't know the real definition of plagiarism).

By "true", I mean the kind of plagiarism, when someone else save your work, publish it elsewhere and say "Hey! See that pic! It's mine! All made from me!".

BUT, in my point of view, we also have to respect the 2 points I mentioned above.

And copyright protects you against plagiarism and art theft, indeed... and happily... BUT it also gives to the artists the right to not respect the points I mentioned above.

We can talk about a very big japanese video game studio, for example, which propose since several dozens of years the same game series because they have popularity and can do it. They make you dream, with fantastic lands and creatures, give inspiration to a lot of artists. But, when some fans want to thank them and to honor them, with, for examples, some small fan games, that can't even have the potential to surpass the original games, then, the big japanese video game studio simply say: "Listen kid, we make you dream, alright, but we don't care. You're using what we made, we didn't allow it, so go f**k yourself!". I'm sorry for the fans of the studio who understood which studio I'm talking about, but that's what they say when they don't allow this kind of thing.

We can also talk about YouTube, maybe?

Back in 2010, it was great. I was a flash animator, I animated 2D stickmen animations and was watching great other flash animators like Terkoiz, Stone, dbs-1029, miccool, etc... Most of the time, when we were making an animation, of course, we needed a music to come with it, and with the theme. Sometimes, when we change the scene, we needed to change the music, so we could need 5 musics for just one animation (or more). Back in 2010, we COULD do this! And the fair use was working... most of the time. Now, how is YouTube? How animators can share their passion? We come on YouTube to submit our work, we don't monetize the video, because most of the time, young 2D animators didn't do it (and don't have the popularity to do it and gain enough money by the way)... but we sometimes have to pay for the musics, while we work sometimes as long if not more than the musicians who made the music(s)... all of this to gain nothing... Yeah. Great.

And can we talk about the "adopts" contest? Or the copyright about the new species artists are making (and which sometimes are not very extraordinary to be honest). WOW! I'm so glad that wyverns, dragons, elves and dwarves are not copyrighted species. Tolkien and other great authors would have been so doomed! And the "adopts" contest... I mean... What the f**k? Well, of course, it is easy money, but... Let 1 artist selling 6 dragon designs, Ok. Why not 20 artists selling 10 dragon designs? But once we'll have a million dragon artists who will sell 20 dragon designs, will it still be possible to make a dragon from our imagination and to avoid another artist coming, shouting: "HEY! Your design is far too close to the one I sold, you f**king thief!!!"?.

With ideas like the "adopts design", I'm not surprised any more when I learn on an artist beware blog that an artist came to another, complaining that their 2 own anthro tigers have the same number of stripes and that it is a character theft. Seriously... How can we be mad against this kind of artist who complain against a simple number of stripes and a tiger character when thousands of artists propose to sell character designs?

This "adopt" thing is just an aberration.

And yet, this is just a small part of what I'm thinking about copyright and arts on Internet in general. But I don't want to give you too much text to read. It's already awesome if you have read everything and have reached these last lines.

As a conclusion, as an artist, I have just one thing to say to the other artists who read this. Don't be selfish. Use the copyright when your arts are really stolen, let your watchers take some inspirations from your character(s), from your world(s). Ideally, if the art in question is not accessible for your Patreon's patrons or to people who sold it only, put a CC-BY licence instead of a Copyright. Show to your watchers you're not an intolerant uptight artist.

Art is a way to express yourself, to share your ideas, your opinion and your imagination. It can't be simply resumed as a possession which belongs to you... and sometimes to the person who paid for it.

If you have another point of view, want to discuss about something I say or simply have a question to ask me, then, do not hesitate to do it by comment.

And if you agree with me and want to share this journal, do not hesitate, as long as you credit me for it. This journal has to be shared as much as possible. I'm really disgusted to see how art is viewed by some artists nowadays, and I have difficulties to stand it day after day.

Looking for song suggestions!

Like the title says, I am looking for suggestions on songs. I'd like to put together an MMV for my favorite series Kingsmaker and love to see what everyone suggests. It'll be a little present to myself and if anything a gift to the fandom as a whole since most of my MMVs started around that time.
