Fictober 1. That 70s Show. October 2022. Until The End of Time.
"It's not too late." Donna leaps onto the marital bed, like an eager child. She tackles her wary husband with relative ease, and he loudly yelps in tepid anguish. "Let's go."
Eric groans, turning to his side. "Yes, it is."
But Donna isn't having any of it, calling a spade a spade. "It's seven!"
"By the time we get ready and drive there, it'll be eight."
Donna loudly scoffs, having learned from the best. "You're such an old man."
"I have many, many gray hairs to prove it."
She lovingly ruffles his salt-and-pepper hair. "At least you have hair."
"I'm more a matinee kind of guy," Eric loudly insists, shaking his head in utter defiance, "And every movie you want to see is a Debbie Downer."
"Every movie you want to see has light sabers or men in tights." She pushes her scarlet hair out of her face, peppered with small streaks of gray, playfully kissing Eric's cheek. "I mean, Tom Holland is kind of cute."
"He's younger than our daughters."
"Call me a cougar," Donna jokes, "After all, I'm a month older than you. But you act like you're eighty-five, sometimes."
He points to a digital clock, its numbers glowing a desperate shade of scarlet. "Look, it's almost my bedtime."
"7:03? You're such an old man," She reiterates, briefly reminiscing about their younger days, "I kinda miss your Spiderman sheets."
"I kinda miss my Daily Bugle days," Eric laments, burying himself beneath plaid flannel sheets, "But then again, I'm pretty comfy."
"You're not convincing me." She dangles the keys to the Toyota, in his waiting face. "You promised you'd take me to see Till, since I went to see that Spiderverse crap with you. Again, after you saw it with..."
"It is not Spiderverse crap!" Eric exclaims, with yet another dramatic yelp, "It's multiple universes, meeting all at once. It would be so cool, to meet other alternate versions of myself..."
Donna springs into action, and leaps off of the bed like a crazy kangaroo. "Like the ones that are willing to go on a movie date with their wife?"
"Those ones aren't canon." Donna glares at him, and he suddenly leaps out of bed, revealing some tightie whities and a Hanes t-shirt. "Fine, I'm going. Can I at least put on some real pants?"
Donna gingerly gestures to the dresser. "Be my guest. And by the way, the movie's at eight."
Eric sighs, admitting defeat. "Yes, dear."

My life with the Walter boys
I was expecting so so much more of this story / tv-show.
It was quite boring and slow actually, just the last five minutes were good, the cliffhanger.
I don't understand why we don't get to have flash-back from Jackie's past and especially her family.
I honestly don't see Jackie living in Colorado at all. I would have much see her in New York, following her life after the death of her family.
And no right mother would send her little girl to leave with eight different boys.
And the triangle love story between two brothers living under the same roof is a bit too much in my opinion.
Nevertheless, the characters in themselves were good and the side characters too.
Btw, at any moment we learned how Cole had his accident? How he hurt his leg beyond repair.
I really hope we will get to see Jackie in New York next season.
ps: Jackie has more chemistry with Cole than Alex that's for sure. Alex got more chemistry with his best friend, Kiley.
Some quotes :
"- Sometimes you have to sacrifice comfort for style." (Isaac - Episode 5)
"- The only thing I know for sure is... what I want is impossible to have." (Cole - Episode 5)
"- You know, I don't remember what you said. You care to refresh my memory? (Cole) - You know what? No. I'm not playing this game where I have to tell you exactly what you wanna hear just to make you feel better." (Jackie)
"- Don't really remember that night. (Cole) - You know what. Everyone uses that as an excuse, but I don't buy it. Drinking doesn't give you a free pass to be an ass." (Jackie - Episode 9)
"- It's gonna take a lot more than a free latte to fix what you broke." (Erin's friend - Episode 9)
"- Why can't you just... just give me the benefit of the double for once instead of always assuming the worst?" (Cole - Episode 9)
"- I'm a burden. - Don't say that." (Episode 9)
"- Because getting attention from Cole was like a drug that I knew was bad for me, but felt so good." (Olivia - Episode 9)
"- It doesn't mean it's not still complicated. I won't break my brother's heart again, but I can't not want you." (Cole - Episode 9)
"- I guess that's my fault. I expected too much of us." (Episode 10)

Hey Jackie!
How do you stop with being too perfectionist about your art and comparing yourself too much to other artists? How do you decide when to stop with a painting? I struggle extremely with bringing myself down and I know I should not set as high standards to myself but at the same time it is of course also what keeps me moving. And also I tend to value my own worth in responses that I get to my art sometimes ...
I am sorry if that is too much info and I know you are of course no therapist for that 😅 But as a fellow artist, do you have any tips for dealing with that?
You know what, anon? This is a really, really great question. One, I think all creatives are confronted with from time to time—or, even, CONSTANTLY. With the advent of the internet and social media, it's actually a problem that extends beyond creative works. But I'll ignore that aspect of it for this post and focus on art creation only.
So, as I’ve already alluded, this is something I also deal with. And overcoming it can be a monumental task at times--even for me (or, rather, people you may view of as more established artists). Though I don’t have a cure for it, I can tell you some of the things I try to keep in mind to keep myself moving.
#1) The first and best thing you can know as an artist is that perfection is your enemy.
What does that mean? It means you’ll never EVER reach perfection-- and not because you’re bad or unskilled, but because it’s IMPOSSIBLE. Literally the only way you can fail is by seeking perfection in your work. What you should try to focus on instead is simply finishing the piece AND THEN STARTING ANOTHER ONE. Momentum and progress is far more beneficial to you as an artist than somehow magically getting one piece of art exactly right.
How do I know? Because that last line in bold is the code I live by. I would not be here with even one single piece of art posted if I’d waited for perfection to post it first--or even sometimes satisfaction! <--this is true of any and all of my art btw. The pieces I think I executed well still fall short of the original concept in my mind. And even those are few and far between.
Which leads us to our next problem: Being hard on yourself as a means of motivation.
I’ve got a sharp pill for us both to swallow. Ready?
#2) Being hard on yourself DOESN’T WORK.
Being hard on yourself, or demeaning your skill will not help motivate or move you.  Note: this is different from being regimented, or strict with your practice.
This kind of thinking brings you to a halt. Case in point: this ask you submitted to me. If it worked, you probably wouldn’t be struggling with your artistic worth right now. Instead, it acts as a slow moving poison in your mind. A constant whisper that what you do is not good enough, and that it might never be good enough. Eventually, it’ll make you lose confidence in your own skill, and the self-doubt will cripple you. Then, as you give up, and go to wallow on social media, looking at other artists’ work, wishing you could be half as talented as they are, that beautiful little art flame inside you will die a little more.
But the truth is, you are already as talented as all those artists you admire. And no, I don’t mean that in some kind of ‘everyone gets a gold star at Jackie’s Painting Palace' kind of way. What I mean is, ART IS A SKILL YOU HAVE TO BUILD. Talent is negligible.
Did I say that loud enough? YOU ALREADY HAVE MORE TALENT THAN YOU’LL EVER NEED TO BE AN AMAZING ARTIST. YOU JUST HAVE TO TRAIN YOUR FLOPPY MEATSUIT TO DO THE THINGS YOUR BRAIN SEES. It’s as simple as that. And as frustrating, and time consuming, and irritating...
*The only way I’ll accept talent as coming into play is if our joint definition of ‘talent’ is to be too goddamn stubborn to be stopped by the overwhelming frustration of learning this craft*
And the only way to learn it is to try, get up if you stumble, and try it again. Over and over and over. And guess what? Sometimes--maybe even a lot of those times--other people will see your art you make for the delicious chocolate rainbow cake it is, even if you can’t. And when they do, soak in the love. But try not to be dependent on it. Make the art because you want to make the art, regardless of its reception, then, make some more.
As they say-- If you build it, they will come. Steadily producing and working on your craft is what will help people find you. And as your audience grows, you get the opportunity for more interaction and feedback! And if the feedback is negative, embrace that spiteful anarchist rebel inside you and make another one just like it. (I mean, how do you think I ended up making so much destiel art??? Oh man. All those Instagram trolls are to thank. Troll: “Dean would never”
Tumblr media
Me: IDK, man. It looks like he’s pretty in to it. I guess I’ll do make another one just to check...)
Anyway... little by little, every new thing you learn from each sketch, painting, thumbnail concept--whatever--will add up and reflect in your art. But you have to be patient and diligent about practicing.
Tumblr media
And
Tumblr media
So, anon, rather than getting caught up in the details or endgame desires, do me a favor. The next piece of art you work on (which will hopefully be the moment you finish reading this), if you find yourself with ‘runaway brain’, take a break. Get some water. Get some space from it. And when you’ve rested, go back to it. Fix anything you can fix with fresh eyes, leave anything you can’t. And then post it. When you do, say something to yourself like, “All right, it is what it is. On to the next”. <-- I’ve done this for every piece of art I’ve ever posted, and believe me when I say it is the sole reason I've had the nerve to publish a lot of the art I have.
Is any of it perfect? HELL NAW. But, it’s finished. Some of it’s fun. And all of it serves as snapshots that prove the incremental improvements we make with each of our pieces do eventually add up. They’ll never add up to perfection, but where’s the fun in ‘perfect’ anyway? The adventure is in the journey, not the destination.
If you can keep these things in mind, I promise you can get over these mind hurdles. Some days will be easier than others, but I believe you can do it. Remember, the only difference between success and failure is a willingness to try.
I sincerely hope this helps.
Happy arting, my friend <3

What do you think Marvin is doing during all of this? Personally, I think Marvin is actively working against IRIS. Either he believes they are up to something shady, or he thinks they are incompetent compared to his magic/connections. I headcannon Marvin as the kind of person who will take matters into their own hands if they think they know best. What do you think? I really enjoy theorizing with you btw.
As much as I wanna figure out what Marvin’s doing rn I’m really trying not to put any concrete thinking into anything rn cuz like I said last night with hen and Jackie this was just the Iris project- which is a smaller part of the ego project. We don’t know how they’ll be connected in the future or if they’ll even be at all- and like I think it’s kinda tiring to try to tie everything to Iris rn cuz we just… don’t know. There were Easter eggs sure but again I feel like if Sean had more planned for these guys being involved with Iris we might have seen more hints?
So far all we know for Marvin is him being involved with the magic circle and notes from Argentum Iridis and like- it’s not much but Imma stick to that till we get more. I really like theories based on way more evidence then just feelings and headcanons you know? And like- obviously I love Marvin… I love him so much- but I know my own headcanon will get in the way of anything until we get more, you know?
Idk I’m glad you’re having fun bro but I’m not really the theorist type… like I love looking at them and learning the facts to try to see where people are coming from but like- I’m not good at coming up with them on my own. Like I said I think I’m just in the theorist server cuz I draw fast and I’m a mega ego fan hgghv so I’m probably not the best person to be asking all this 😅

✨ Oh god that does make it more awkward yeh 😂🙈
I feel like the Ford's are kind of a boy family no? 😆 But I just think he would make the BEST girl dad 🥹🩷
I won't lie I understand the teeth thing as I remember how insecure I was before I got mine done! But yeh if it's the girl I think you're on about - not his cousin btw (just family friends) - yeh she's defo had a boob job. It's a weird one for me because I understand using make-up/clothes/hair styles to feel better about your self but personally, I could never go as far as using needles/surgery/fillers - it's just too extreme for me. [Having foreign objects put in your body & being put under anaesthesia for anything other than life saving surgery just makes me feel ill] but each to their own! 😅
I think that's a great observation of giraffe boy! What I also like is that he clearly wants to be the best, but he does so through purely focusing on himself? Twitter loves to say how much better Keenan is than Fred - does Fred hate on Hugo? no. Keenan himself said how lovely Fred was to him after the whole red card debacle.
I love people who are driven and ambitious but don't trip other people up to get to the top. He's willing to put in all that extra work and study to get to the top rather than cutting corners and cheating others to get there. I genuinely can't imagine just how immensely proud of him his parents must be. What a guy. All whilst getting a bloody degree in economics on the side. Jesus.
I also get what you mean about Jacky though 🥺 I'm not even a scrum half, let alone a rugby player, and I would love to study Antoine Dupont - just because of how truly brilliant he is. What a time to be alive to watch the likes of him play. So whether it's 'laziness' or just plain insecurity that's stopping Jack from doing that I don't know. But he's missing a trick for sure. Sad.
Awww bless you!! The most important thing is your health though - there will always be other games & other trips but your wellbeing is the most important thing 💖xxxx
Please tell me about one moment that haven't been awkward around that man for me...
Tumblr media
I have been his faithful dobby for less than a decade and I Feel exhausted... I know all I can know about him and Yet I am still surprised.
I think fordy gonna have a girlie princess but there is potential for twins in the family so... hopeful ! Addie account has been hacked btw...
Idk why I see her as cousin... yeah I know it is difficult for teeth as it is easily mocked and all but I like some flaws... (say the woman who horribly threw words at J appearance lately ) ... I am about To watch documentary about fillers actually...
As someone who recently had anesthesia and hospital stay I think you must hate yourself and your image a lot to take this path.
U know I cannot unsee the fact his best friend has a giant giraffe in his salon...
Yeah I see what you implies about only pointing on his own flaws and focusing on his strenght. I think he isn't a fool, he knows he is good. I think Jack is terrified to be average and be replaced by someone better like his father was and has faced A LOT More difficulties than Fred could ever think of or will ever face. The size he had to put on the barriers he had to climb because he wasn't supposed to do career he didn't played for premiership title he didnt played for rwc.... The injury well let's face it maybe he will never be the same player he was and Will always have a mental barrier to push into extreme now that he has been injured in such a stupid way.
All in all I think he never watched bigger competition than england pool not because he is a fool but because he thinks it is not even worth his time as he will never reach them? I could be wrong. I also think it is lucid because he will never....It is already too late. I know I might sound hard , he has qualities but he will never be more than average good I can assure you that now. He should have already learn quicker and he didn't step up when everyone was expecting him to so I think it isn't gonna happen. Unfortunately.
I have hope on captaincy later on tho because he has leadership.
I think I am very impatient to see the climb of Freddie because for now they still move him too much from fullback ... Now that he is free of his degree I want to see his new challenges and I think.... unfortunately he will need to move on from Leicester at one point because it is too cosy ? Idk if you see what I mean... I think he needs risk and challenges to be at his best.

Buncha Little Macs! Honestly I initially wasn’t a big fan of SugarMac, having been more on the MarbleMac side, but that couple grew on me because of how wholesome they are TvT That and how the episodes about their relationship have some fairly solid advice on romantic relationships (ie, the whole “small gestures of love are good too” in Hard to Say Anything)
I actually kinda like the design for their canon kid, but the rumored name of “Big Sugar”??? Ehhh not so much haha. So in my next gen, his name is Sweet Apple while his brother there on the upper right (who’s the middle child) is Piney Apple and his sister there on the upper left (who’s the youngest) is Red "Angie" Anjou.
Also for MarbleMac, I’m wondering which direction I’ll take that ship in (polyamory? divorce? Marble moves on? who knows)
Some more info below👇
Sweet Apple was always fascinated with his dad's yoke and would always beg to wear it since he felt it would "make him a big boy." Big Mac told him that once he was strong enough to carry it around for a day, then he could wear it. As you can see here, he did manage to do just that :^)
Each of them have their own nicknames for their paternal aunts. Sweet Apple calls Applejack “Auntie Jacki” and Apple Boom “Auntie Bloomy”. Piney calls Applejack “Aunt AJ” and Apple Bloom “Auntie AB”. Angie calls Applejack “Auntie Jack-jack” and Apple Bloom “Aunt Blooms”.
Angie was named after a type of pear as Big Mac's attempt to connect better with his maternal family. After he and his sisters got to properly know Grand Pear, they met the rest of their Pear relatives, including their maternal grandmother Cinnamon Pear (this is an actual character who appeared in Perfect Pear btw, I'm one of those who headcanon her as being Pear Butter's mother). Cinnamon Pear was even the one who suggested her name, while discussing potental baby names with Big Mac and Sugar Belle (Sugar Belle was pregnant with Sweet Apple at this time).
Of the siblings, Sweet Apple’s the only one who got to meet Granny Smith and Grand Pear :,)
When they were little and told that they would have another sibling, Sweet Apple was excited to be a big brother again while Piney wasn't since he still wanted to be the baby. Though Piney's dislike of the idea was forgotten for awhile when he and Sweet Apple had a bet on whether their sibling would be an earth pony like them or a unicorn like their mom.
Sweet Apple is best friends with Lil Cheese and the two of them often spend time together in Sugarcube corner, which is convenient since Sugar Belle delivers her sweets there whenever she can.
The kids adore their maternal aunt, Fizzlepop Berrytwist aka Tempest Shadow (I like the headcanon that Tempest is Sugar Belle’s older sister who ran away before she was born since it makes for great angst material). “Auntie Fizzy” (only the kids can call her that) loves the kids but she’s awkward around them, lol.
Angie’s enrolled in the School of Friendship, which is where she wanted to study ever since she’s heard about it. Her Auntie Jack-jack even helped convince her parents to enroll her there. She’s noted to be really active in various clubs and extracurriculars but struggles a bit with her grades.
Like his mother, Sweet Apple is interested in baking and alongside his best friend, they apprenticed under the Cakes to learn all the best recipes. Currently, Sweet Apple’s planning on going to college and taking a culinary course.
Piney’s the only one of them who doesn’t have a cutie mark yet, something that he’s insecure about.
Angie often listened to stories from Sugar Belle about Starlight Glimmer and while her brothers don’t think too positively of her (Sweet Apple is scared of her while Piney is wary and always onguard when she’s near), she can’t help but be intrigued with her. She wants to know what the road to villainy then reformation is like and whether powerful magic might have a correlation to emotional instability. It’s this fascination with the Headmare that was part of her reason for wanting to go to the School of Friendship.
Piney struggles a bit with middle child syndrome, mainly feeling that he doesn't have anything great going for him like his siblings.

Some quick (EDIT: This post is not quick at all. I don't know why I never learn that when I say a reaction post is going to be "quick," it is literally never quick) reactions to The Sopranos 3x08 "He Is Risen":
I don't find Ralphie particularly interesting, unfortunately. But at least he creates new situations for Tony, who is interesting. In this regard he's kinda like Father Intintoli (am I spelling that right? I don't care), who is super boring but has the one redeeming quality of occasionally creating new situations for Carmela. Though unlike the priest, at least Ralphie's actor has stage presence (screen presence?), so that's something else he has going for him.
I was really worried that the events of "Employee of the Month" would not come up again, especially after I read that Dr. Melfi's role is smaller from here on out. It would have been ridiculous to put a main character through that and then never let it be apparently relevant to the rest of her arc. So I was deeply relieved when Tony offered to walk her to her car and she thought about it for a moment and then turned him down (fantastically subtle performance by Lorraine Bracco in that moment, btw—you can see her trauma come rushing back to her, you can see her temptation to accept Tony's offer, and when she gives her answer, she's just composed enough that Tony wouldn't notice that anything was wrong, but the audience can see and hear the anguish just beneath the surface). I would honestly have been satisfied if that was all I got, but then on top of that, there's the scene where she rants to Elliot about how exhausting it is to constantly have to be there for other people when she's dealing with her own trauma. God, that scene was great. Probably one of my favorite scenes in the whole show so far. I can't believe how long it took me to realize that Melfi is the best character. Also, I feel like it says a lot about her as a person that she apologizes to Elliot for going on that tirade. God I love her.
At Thanksgiving, when Tony tells Meadow that he loves her and that he'd be devastated if anything bad happened to her, her face sort of softens. It's nice that they seem to be on the path to reconciliation (well, nice in a twisted sort of way, since she had a very good reason to be angry with him), but it's also sort of hard to buy, because Meadow has no clue of the context of that statement (that when Tony looked at her, he saw Tracee), and I feel like if I were her in that moment, I would have been like "what do you mean, if something happened to me? Do you know something I don't know? 😟"
When Tony is explaining to someone (Johnny, I think?) why he had to attack Ralphie, he first says "He disrespected the Bing," and when that's not enough, he adds, "He bashed that poor girl's brains in." When Ralphie apologizes, he does it in the same order (after first apologizing for turning Tony down for a drink): first the insult to the Bing, then Tracee. Pretty telling! Though I do wonder if, in Tony's case, he brought up the Bing first because he thought it was more likely to resonate with Johnny or whoever he was talking to, since we know that Tracee's death truly shook him. Undoubtedly he's mad about the insult as well, but I was thinking about the end of "University": someone (Paulie, I think?) says Ralphie "was way out of line," Tony sadly says "that girl..." and Paulie or whoever it was says, "That, too." There, too, the insult comes first and Tracee is an afterthought, but she's not an afterthought to Tony. King of not being the #1 most despicable person in the New Jersey mob 👏👏👏
I am still very much figuring out how I feel about Jackie Jr. 🤨
Ducks!!! I don't know what to make of them, but they sure are ducks!!!
Long before I started watching the show, I saw (and reblogged, because I thought it was hilarious) a photoset of the line where Tony says he read the Cliff Notes for The Prince and thought it was "okay." But the photoset put a comma between "Prince" and "Machiavelli," so that it looked like Tony was saying "[The] Prince, [by] Machiavelli." But in the HBO captions, and in James Gandolfini's delivery, there is definitely no comma. He just thinks the guy's name is "Prince Machiavelli." Amazing.

My Best Friend is an Android from Outer Space 🪐🌠
I’m finally developing a story I’ve been sitting on for a while (September 2022) into a webcomic and I thought it’d be nice to document my process and promote it somewhere! I started working on it late last year and plan to launch it sometime this year. This’ll be my first ever webcomic so there’s probably gonna be lots of trial and error.
(btw if you’ve made a webcomic before some advice would be greatly appreciated!~)
Tumblr media
It follows a 12 y/o named Jackie who befriends an android child sent to Earth by aliens from a planet far far away to learn about humans, and it’s set in the early-mid 2000s. I came up with the idea whilst listening to an internetcore/webcore playlist I found on youtube sometime last year.
Here are their very basic character designs vvvv
Tumblr media
I wanted to keep the designs fairly simple since I’ll have to be redrawing them a bunch and also (this is rather ambitious) I’d like to have it in a style similar to pixel art. I think that’ll probably be the biggest challenge as I’ll have to translate pixel art which is usually on a smaller canvas to a webcomic format. But I’ll give it a go!

hi! I'm the anon that asked about sending in the fic. apologies if this is the wrong place to send it, I wasn't sure what was most appropriate. feel free to ignore it btw. apologies for plot holes and mischaracterisation I wrote this while very tired.
When he’s not trying to solve the mystery of kidnapped children or plotting ways to kill a man, Ran likes to walk the halls of the castle.
In the End everything is so similar, the cities, the bridges, the ground, the sky – it all goes on forever, repeating itself over and over again, never anything new.
In the Overworld however, no two cities he’s been to have ever been the same. They bustle under one sky with their own clouds each day and their own constellations each night. They have been built by different minds for different purposes and different people and he loves to study it.
So when he wanders the halls he take notes in his journal of the art and the architecture. Of the style and the purpose and the history.
He’s definitely not hoping to bump into someone. He would never do that.
One night when he’s unable to sleep he decides to go for another walk. At this point he’s sure he’s seen everything so it’s more to clear his head than anything else.
Unlike the other times he’s been out at night, the castle is not silent. There’s a low hum emanating from somewhere, quiet enough that he reckons he’s the only one that can hear it.
He walks towards it and the sound grows louder and more distinguishable.
It’s music.
They don’t have music in the End, not really. However, it had been one of the few things in the Overworld he never had to learn to understand. The second he heard it he got it. He felt it in his bones, the way that the rhythm would drum through his heart and tell him a story. A story just for him. The way that the melody would make him understand things he could never put into words, even if only for a moment.
He follows the sound, or rather it lures him to it. Through a corridor and up a set of stairs. Open a door, shut the door, up another flight, along another corridor. He thinks he’s running now, sprinting to find where the music is coming from, but he stops dead when he sees the source.
It’s him.
At the end of the hallway, facing away from him, Jackie sits in front of a piano.
Ran doesn’t think he’s ever been to this part of the palace before. The ceilings are lower, the walls bare, the windows foggy. Nobody has been here in a long time; he wouldn’t be surprised if Jackie was the only one that knew about it.
He stands stock still at the door to the hallway, not wanting to move, not wanting to shut the door for fear it might disturb him, for fear it might make him stop.
He’s never heard this song before, which is odd because he likes to think he can recognise most Overworld music by now. The same songs are played at all the gatherings he goes to, through all the streets he walks. He had never considered that there would be more.
This one sounds sad, not sad like crying but sad like stillness. It feels like trailing your hand through a river as it flows by, or when you learn as a child that you can’t sleep on clouds, or when you wake up from a nightmare calling for someone only to realise you are alone.
It feels like everything he’s never been able to put into words all at once, it feels like it’s for him but not just for him, like a hand reaching out and saying I feel like that too.
He’s so caught up in all the feelings that he can only think one thing, and that is that he doesn’t want Jackie to stop.
Ran should know by now that when it comes to Jackie, he never gets what he wants.
The last note Jackie plays sounds less like a conclusion and more like a promise. I will be back tomorrow. I still have stories to tell you.
Ran wonders that if he returns at the right time he might be able to listen to him again.
And then kill him when he’s distracted, a voice in his head adds on.
Sure, that too.
Jackie hasn’t moved since he stopped playing but Ran knows that won’t last for long and decides to slip out the door while he’s still unnoticed.
“Whoever’s waiting outside the door better stop and hope to God I’m feeling merciful tonight,” a voice commands. It is not one he recognises. It’s definitely Jackie, but it’s low and tired. It hurts Ran and he doesn’t know why.
Ran’s only halfway out the door and he figures his best bet at staying alive is to reveal himself. He’s done his research. He knows that unlike him, Jackie doesn’t have assassination attempts, only assassinations. A long list of names with him as the last face they saw.
There are worse ways to go, he thinks.
He turns around to go back through the door again.
“Ran?” Jackie says, confused. “What’re you doing here?”
What is he doing here? If the Council knew of this, Ran in a dark room with his target, alone in a hidden in a part of the castle where no one goes, not trying to kill him but instead afraid of him, instead just watching him, instead wishing that he would turn around and continue to play - well - he’d be dead probably.
Definitely.
Oh, he’s so dead.
For once in his life Ran has lost all ability to lie, or tell the truth, or say anything remotely useful.
That’s been happening a lot recently.
“I- um, I was just- I was uh-”
Jackie looks less confused now, instead just annoyed.
“You were what?” he asks.
“I was listening.”
His face seems to fall, like a realisation that drains all irritation from it. His harsh brow fades away and his eyes soften. Here in the moonlight Ran think Jackie looks the youngest he’s ever seen him.
“Did you like it?” His voice is different but in a good way this time, it’s sweet, almost naïve and it strikes Ran once again how strange it is that this kid has enough red in his ledger to anger herds of bulls.
It doesn’t occur to Ran that it’s strange that he does too.
“I did,” Ran replies, and he doesn’t mean to. He really didn’t mean to say that. Why did he say that? Why did-
Jackie smiles and all trains of thought stop. “Good.”
Jackie gets up from the stool and walks down the corridor towards him. Closer and closer. Ran’s heart is getting faster and he has to remind himself that Jackie doesn’t know. He’s not going to kill him.
It doesn’t help.
When Jackie reaches him he stops for a second and seems unsure what to do. Eventually he pats Ran’s shoulder and meets his eye. “G’night, Ran.”
He walks past him and through the door, not expecting a reply, not expecting anything at all.
When Ran falls asleep that night he tries not to think about a life in the future. About a life far away from here. With grassy fields and trees and lakes. With blue skies and a house in the middle of nowhere. Far from everything he’s ever known. Untouchable. Undisturbed. Answering to no one.
He tries not to think about sitting in that house – it’s more a cottage really – simply furnished with the windows wide open, resting in an armchair and listening to music played by a boy with blue in his eyes and red in his ledger. With blonde hair and a laugh that sounds like if seagulls could sing. The most beautiful music he’s ever heard.
He tries really, really hard.
i'm going to cry this is so so lovely holy shit. this is my new favorite thing in the whole world now. i am going to treasure this forever.
it feels so weird to see ran and jackie written by someone else, but, like, you've taken them and made them better... they feel so alive here. they really come off the page.
my writing normally feels grounded and dry, which is intentional, but i absolutely love how yours feels glittery and flowy (like a stream). oh my god.
thank you so much for sharing this!! if you ever want to like put it on ao3, please do!!!

Its me da Brothers au anon back again. I reblogged your post with the link to the story because I think that was easier than linking it in a ask! (I dont think links work in asks?)
I personally think while Porkius isn't the best king by far, he also isnt the worse. And he makes sure to treat the group with some respect and treats them like humans instead of mindless fighters, giving them what they need and taking certain things into consideration (Like Ran's inability to touch water). But because he's not perfect he also tends to hold him to high expectations and is sometimes seen as rude, mean, and uninterested in them. So a friendly boss-coworker relationship is the best way to describe it probably.
Grievous is Sapnaps character! But as far as I know there where no hints about any characters being related to people like Sapnap, Ranboo, Punz, etc. So Grievous is completely different from Sapnap, more hesitant and shy at times, but confident and kind. At first the friendship is slow and seems like it may just fall apart, but it doesn't to their surprise, and its when conversations between the 4 are even going on beyond battles and training they get closer.
Again taking inspiration from a lighthouse is waiting for me, as of now Karl went back in time and saved the fishers, dropping them infront of Ranbob to make their own decision. They keep him in prison for a while until Benjamin starts to suspect something is off, and moves him as far from the Dream room and the closest possible to the surface, where Ranbob starts to act differently. Eventually as Ranbob gets better and they eventually, reluctantly trust him, they decide to move to the fishers shack, even after Cletus and Isaac repeatedly say they want to stay in Mizu but Benjamin and Charles said being so close could set Ranbob back. Ranbob does not become a fisher man, instead he hangs around and tries multiple different things (repair work, cooking, arts and craft, etc) in an attempt to find who he is again and what he's good at.
I imagine a part of Dream somehow managed to latch onto his mask, not enough to have a own body and mind, but enough to get into vulnerable enough peoples mind to manipulation them. And after multiple disasters, and lettibg his mentor down, Ranbob became depressed and desperate for a way to make it all right. And that how Ranbob became so heavily influenced by Dreams remaining presence.
TW FOR BEATING BTW!
When the battle begins Ranbob desperately calls for it to be stopped and that he forfeits, but Porkius and Ran refuse to let him leave without a fight. At first Ran attacks Ranbob, but he lets Ranbob fight back. And makes a show of him dogding and countering attacks, making it known they are truly better than Ranbob in fighting and will win no matter what Ranbob does. Porkius thinks its fine and doesn't notice that Ran is striking to kill (as according to the Tales people are only knocked unconscious in the arena and not killed), until Ran picks up Ranbob and throws him against one of the rocks in the arena, where he starts to beat him and throw him more against the rock. Then Porkius hastily calls off the match and sends people in to grab Ran.
Ok TW gone
I headcanon Ranbob as being less than 25% enderman, not being able to teleport and only sometimes being allowed to pick up blocks.
While I headcanon Ran as being about 70% enderman. Which is very rare. And due to this percentage he is able to teleport (which is highly rare for enderman hybrids, as typically their other side/human side can't handle the teleportation) although sometimes he can't fully control where he goes), pick up blocks, and fluently speak enderman and make noises.
And no, Ran does not recognize Jackie as looking similar to Tubbo. Ran doesnt have the clearest memory of Mizu, only remembering certain moments. One of the things he doesng remember is the paintings/pictures, he knows there are rooms dedicated to multiple Ancestors, but forgot that said rooms tend to have paintings/pictures of the Ancestors. I hope that's what you mean by the last part anyway?
Hello again! And thank you for the link, I’m excited to read it, the summary makes it seem pretty cool.
Okay, so fairly okay King Porkius, even if they aren’t the closest, got it.
Glad I got Grievous right, there. He seems to have an interesting personality. I’m curious about everyone else’s personalities here as well, given certain circumstances, and the bits we got from them.
They become fairly close, huh? That’s nice. Is there anyone who’s particularly close? Watson and Ran seemed to know each other somewhat. And what’s their relationship with the other fighters from the Pit? If nobody died, then I imagine the others are still around. Do they talk or fight with them occasionally?
So Karl saved the fishermen, and they kept him in a prisoner? Where? In Mizu, I’m assuming from what you said, but did they keep in a room or something? And since you said Benjamin noticed something was off, was he able to sense something, or is he just observant?
How do they deal with the Dream mask? Or is that a plot point for later? Do they even figure out that’s what was influencing Ranbob, or just know it’s something in Mizu?
Ranbob’s just kind of learning new stuff, seems like it might come in handy. Maybe he can sew or something? Cletus and Isaac could explore Mizu more, on their own? Or would that make them vulnerable to the mask as well?
Speaking of, how is life with the fisherman, like around the house? Are they fairly well-off, or having some trouble with the new addition? Who’s closest to Ranbob?
And, uh, oof. I can imagine that’s a whole mess to deal with. Not only are the fishers getting themselves involved, but the gladiator gang is probably shocked at what happened. First impressions are less than great, I bet. How does Ran feel once he calms down a bit? And what’s everyone’s reactions to discovering their brothers, on both sides? Since the gang would hear that Ranbob killed hundreds, and the fishermen would realize Ran didn’t know what had been happening to his brother.
Now, the brothers’ different abilities are interesting, and I’m curious as to how it would effect their battle styles. Are they the only hybrids of their respective groups, or are there others?
And I believe there was a picture of the original L’manberg crew in the Clingy Duo room? Do Ranbob or one of the fisherman recognize how much Jackie looks like Tubbo? Does it confuse them, or do they brush it off?
Poor Ranbob. Is he hurt badly? I imagine he’ll need some sort of medical attention, which gives the two groups an opportunity to talk. Do the fishermen stick around, or leave after that shocking display?

Family & Bonds AU Headcanons
I an dabbling in a couple of AU’s currently. Primarily what I have posted is a Family and Bonds AU titled....Family Bonds. (original. v crafty. wow.) Anyway, lengthy post under the cut.
I shifted the family tree from Bonds in order to accommodate the incredible characters designed by middlewarnersibling in Family to be the Warner trio's parents, and I love that story line for them.
In Bonds, it seemed odd that Bosko would some how not notice his lover's aging or just how she managed to keep all three kids a secret, but I figured, one was totally possible and that one child was Slakko, their father from Family. So it goes like this:
Oswald and Ortensia have a daughter named Odelia.
Odelia has an affair with Bosko Warner
Culminating in middlewarnersibling’s character Slakko Warner. Odelia still never tells Bosko and before the baby arrives, Bosko’s bleeding heart brother, Kokko offers to marry Odelia so the baby at least appears “legit.”
So Kokko becomes the Warner trio’s legal grandfather.
According to Family, Slakko meets Ophelia, a cat toon who sings and dances. They hook up and reluctantly wind up in a shotgun marriage and eventually all three kids are born.
Yakko is approx 5-6 years older than Dot and 3 years older than Wakko, putting him solidly in the middle.
Their birthdays are all in different seasons; I have decided Dot is mid-late June, Wakko is early October and Yakko is January, so their age gap gets all wonky at certain times of the year.
Babs and Buster were actually about 14/15 respectively at the launch of Tiny Toon Adventures which makes them both a couple years Yakko's senior.
I also think it makes for an excellent joke about Yakko always gunning for older women.
(For future reference, yes this makes Buster a solid 7 years older than Dot.)
The rest of the primary Tiny Toons crew is pretty much on par with the exception of Hampton and Dizzy who I headcanon as younger by about a yearish.
(Why yes, Yakko and Dot both have deep seated parental trauma, why do you ask? Wakko does too but it uh....comes out in a different way.)
I headcanon an interesting arch for Slakko which involves something of redemption? In Bonds while Bosko is on the hunt for the Warners he finds this other Warner and decides to see if he has any information. Slakko is living alone in a bit of a shite apartment and mostly keeps to himself and has been ok at staying out of bigger trouble. So when Bosko and his boys arrive at his door he's suspicious and ready to make it a fight if he has to. But there isn't much of a fight; Bosko demands to know where the trio is, Slakko honestly has no idea but Bosko doesn't believe him. The weasels and whomever else Bosko brought as his cronies beat the shit out of him but he holds true to his story.
So Bosko finally believes him. More or less. He doesn't want to have to come back here so he decides to make sure that Slakko can't ever 'see' his children again and has whomever's with him hold him down and burn his eyes with dip. So Slakko's left blinded, injured and probably should be dead but he's not.
Yakko remembers that his folks hardly ever reported an injury or used a hospital unless they absolutely had to. So, close to the end of the show Yakko finds out his father actually used medical services and decides to figure out how to get himself listed as an emergency contact. Not that he intended to ever come to assist but more so that he can make sure to be notified of anything particularly fatal. In Family, he lamented that he never got to say goodbye to their mother and as much as he disagrees with him, Yakko never wants to miss that chance again. So, post Bonds, he ends up finding out about Slakko's sudden blindness and discreetly, not to the knowledge of Slakko or his sibs, decides to help out. Just this once, is Yakko's reasoning.
Um....some cute things I headcanon....
I kept Wakko's diabetes....not cute but like, it's more light hearted than that other stuff tbh
Also not 100% cute: Babs continues to go to therapy to address things like depression and PTSD but it takes some....convincing for Yakko to see someone again. Especially after being made to on the lot. But after a particularly bad night he agrees to give it a shot.
Basically, they coax each other through episodes and have learned to spot when they're each using coping mechanisms in harmful ways and call each other out on it. They make a fantastic team.
They also don’t totally shy away from the conversations with their daughters. They introduce what’s appropriate and with their age gap that can be tricky.
They both also have a very....interesting time being parents early on. Babs is waiting to see if she'll feel what her mother must have felt that made her leave them in a huff and Yakko's struggling to come to terms with the fact that there was nothing wrong with him, his father just never wanted them. Basically they're looking for when another shoe will drop but it won't because they don't just love their kid, they wanted them.
They got to make a choice their parents didn't.
I do have fankids for Babs and Yakko, both girls, both named after powerful women in art and history. Lucille Ophelia and Jacqueline Madeline. (If any of you know the Madeline namesake I will be impressed AF)
Lucille very strictly goes by Lu, call her Lucy and you die (unless you're Wakko. This kid plays favorites and he is it.) and she is a handful of a teenager. Sharp tongued and sharp witted.
Jackqueline, or Jackie, is 5 years younger and is so naive and sweet it hurts and she is Daddy's Girl capital D. Yes, at first they figured she was just masterful at the cuteness game like Dot was but as it turns out, she's got that Wakko style innocence.
Babs jokes that she's clearly actually Wakko's kid. (There is absolutely no possible way for that to be true. Which is why it's funny instead of suspicious.)
They have both watched Animaniacs and Tiny Toon Adventures and just to piss off her dad, Lu says Tiny Toons is her favorite.
Skippy, like Dot, had a dance focus and so, in a few years' time, she's gonna run into him on the set of a music video. That'll be fun!
Babs and Yakko have pissed of more than one director for going off on what appear to be essentially joke tangents but it's actually the two of them attempting to out do each other until there's a clear winner. They are both spotlight hogging, competitive lil shits.
It's Babs' idea for Wakko to try fronting the band he's in and his bandmate get stupidly jealous and steals his girl....oops.
Dot is stupidly beautiful and very much lovable (wow. shocking.) And some poor poor blue bunny is gonna fall face first into a sitcom level affair....and since he can't tell either of his best bros about it he ends up drunkenly calling Babs who just laughs her ass off the whole time.
Yakko can play chess in his head. Like...he doesn't need the board. He can just keep track of the pieces. (Honestly, having to be so damn smart is a complex brought on the physical and verbal abuse from his father.)
Wakko....honestly, as smart as he can be and as righteous as he is, he has that Warner independence streak something bad after touring. He tries a bit much and ends up starting a fight with someone and long story short, he's caught with that twink stuff from Family (unfortunate name tbh basically, think crack.)
Yakko is obviously beside himself and Dot is more or less oblivious as she's at university at this point. Basically, shit hits the fan and the brothers split.
Dot tries to keep in touch with Wakko but he severs the connection from both his sibs.
Wakko does get clean. He also falls in love with a remarkable human toon named Jesse.
He’s also still friends with Foghorn, who is actually a pretty great support in all of this.
I headcanon Wakko as demi homosexual.
Much to her own surprise, Babs LOVES being a mom.
Yakko struggles with partnership. A lot of what goes into being a parent are things he’s already experienced and he has a hard time NOT being a know it all and actually partnering with his wife....it’s a fun dynamic.
Yakko also still has a crush on Max Goof that he SWORE he was over but after seeing him at random very much IS NOT.
It's not just Wakko making horrible choices btw. Sorry this was meant to be the cute stuff....uh....
Both Yakko and Wakko walk with their sister at her wedding (told you things will circle back!)

Pairings: Jackie/Hyde

This story is complete.
Rated T.
15k words, 2 chapters.
Pairings: Jackie/Hyde
Just Ask Santa by heatherlea75 (post s8, Christmas fic):
This is a two part Christmas story featuring JH from Cliches and Things They Say. Sometimes, adults should believe in Santa Claus, too.
This story is complete.
Rated T.
10k words, 3 chapters.
Pairings: Jackie/Hyde
Miracle by B_August (AU):
To Pam Burkhart, Jackie is the abnormal child that her husband dragged in during their vacation in Hawaii. To her peers, she's the smart and stuck-up princess that graces the school halls. To the Basement Gang, she's the annoying brat that infiltrated their ranks. To Jackie herself, she is a super powered freak who just wants to do her best. But to Jack Burkhart, Buddy Morgan, a pair of higher life forms, and those who she would later help, she is nothing short of a miracle.
This story is a WIP.
Rated T.
47k words, 33 chapters.
Pairings: Jackie/Hyde, Eric/Donna, Fez/Buddy
My Best Friend's Girl by the bohemian flow (AU):

This story is a WIP.
Rated T.
2k words, one chapter so far.
Pairings: Jackie/Hyde, temporary Jackie/Kelso
perfect matches burn (and baby, so do we) by deartangerine (AU):
One year after their break-up, Jackie and Hyde have finally pieced themselves back together, on their own. Jackie's in school. Hyde's sober. But one fateful weekend stuck together at their best friends' wedding might be all it takes to tear them down again.
Or maybe, just maybe, to build something new.
Another fic where Hyde's genderbent, and it's great! I highly recommend reading the prequel, our fingers intertwined (just like our hearts).
This story is a WIP.
Rated M.
24k words, 9 chapters so far.
Pairings: Jackie/Hyde, Eric/Donna
Play With Fire by ShinyBo0ts0fLeather (s8 canon divergence):
After Hyde comes back from Las Vegas, Sam comes into everyone's life and thus ruining the very last chance he had with Jackie. Instead of the moping around, Jackie is now fueled with fire and a sense of determination to move on and make a life for herself as a strong, independent woman. Instead of turning their back on Jackie and siding with Hyde, Eric, Donna, Kelso, Fez and even Laurie remain loyal friends to Jackie. Hyde is completely broken, but isn't a complete asshole to Jackie. The gang doesn't turn their back on Hyde, but instead support him yet hold him responsible for his actions instead of sweeping it all under the rug. While Jackie is set on moving on, Hyde is set on getting Jackie back and changing his ways for both her and his sake. Whatever it takes.
Eric never left to Africa, and Kelso is in Chicago with Brooke, but is still around. Donna sticks to her feminist values like in the early seasons and is a better friend to Jackie. Jackie is close to the Forman's as well, and her relationship with her father will be prominent and better here as well. Overall positive with some angst.
This story is a WIP.
Rated M.
30k words, 15 chapters.
Pairings: Jackie/Hyde, Eric/Donna
Something Unexpected by crimsinsky (s1 canon divergence):
What if Jackie wasn’t quite so heartbroken over Kelso kissing Pam Macy?
This story is a WIP.
Rated T.
15k words, 11 chapters so far.
Pairings: Jackie/Hyde, Red/Kitty
Spirit In The Night by springsteenicious (s4/s5 canon divergence):
Jackie and Hyde are in the midst of a passionate- and secret- fling. When Kelso's sister lends the six of them her cabin by a lake for a few days, they have to be even more secretive. But secrecy proves to be a difficult thing to maintain, especially when they can't seem to get enough of each other's presence. (Inspired by the Bruce Springsteen song).
This story is funny as hell, and it's a WIP.
Rated T.
4k words, 2 chapters.
Pairings: Jackie/Hyde, Eric/Donna
Take The Money and Run! by MinaSeraphina (post s7):
This here's a story about Steven Hyde and Jackie Blue. Two young lovers with nothin' better to do...
Complete.
Rated M.
29k words, 12 chapters.
Pairings: Jackie/Hyde
The One That Wasn't Canon by samcaponi (AU):
Basically, this is an AU where Jackie never dated Kelso. It's not set in a specific season but will take different aspects from each season.
This has to be one of the cutest stories I've ever read in my life.
This story is a WIP.
It doesn't have a rating.
11k words, 9 chapters.
Pairings: Jackie/Hyde, background Eric/Donna
Things Fall Apart by leoasc (s8 canon divergence):
On one night in a motel room in Chicago, Jackie and Hyde learn a valuable lesson about love and life: Things fall apart. People get hurt. Hearts get broken. Over the course of nine months and a series of events no one saw coming, they learn how true that really is.
Prepare yourself because your heart's going to be crushed, but the author guaranteed that they'll fix it so I'm trusting them.
This story is a WIP.
60k words, 9 chapters.
Pairings: Jackie/Hyde
Too Late by brokenrussiancrawl (s8 canon divergence):
Hyde was not stalking her. It was just, after months of not seeing or hearing from her, finally spotting her in a bar made him realize how much he truly missed her. The only problem is, the tiny brunette wants nothing to do with the gang...even more so him. But he couldn't stay away.
This is angsty. Very, very angsty. But it's great!
This story is a WIP.
Rated T, but the author said that might change later.
23k words, 5 chapters so far.
Pairings: Jackie/Hyde, Jackie/OC, background Eric/Donna
We're Not Broken, Just Bent by SparklingSoul (post s8):
When tragedy strikes and Jackie and Hyde are forced to live up to their godparent duties, they need to overcome their differences and work together. Along the way, they realize that maybe their relationship isn’t broken beyond repair after all...
This story is one of my favorites, I love it so much!! Please read it.
This story is complete.
Rated T.
67k words, 24 chapters.
Pairings: Jackie/Hyde, background Eric/Donna
When Did This Happen? by QueenBookBuff (post s8):
Hyde is stunned when he finds out Jackie and Eric no longer hate each other, and he finds he hates the idea of her having a soft place to land that is not him. What he hates even more is the idea that Eric is protecting Jackie from him.
Angsty and beautiful story, I'm loving it.

Rated T.

Hi, can I request Wheeljack, Knockout and Soundwave reacting to a !linguist human who is curious about the Cybertronian language and interested in learning it. We already know Ratchet taught a little bit, so no need to include him. Btw love your blog and other headcanon blogs like it. Thank you.
Thank you :D I made it as an s/o but I guess it could be platonic too
~Soundwave~
•He isn’t a very talkative mech to begin with, but he is glad to teach you
•Soundwave is very happy that you take an interest in his culture/language
•You have a more deep interest in the cybertronian language than just curse words, but if you happen to want to know some of those too, he just gives you an “are you serious” look, but will teach you anyway
•I feel like some of the words might be hard for a human to pronounce, since it is a kind of electronic language if that makes sense
•But you try your best anyway and Soundwave finds your miss pronunciations amusing
•Also Soundwave speaks a very official form of cybertronian, so you won’t learn any kind of slang words from him
~Wheeljack~
•He has a certain slang/whatever when he speaks cybertronian, the Wreckers have their own kind of shorthands for words and stuff so he is used to speaking like that
•So when he teaches you to speak cybertronian, it might sound a bit funny to the other bots
•Jackie has a ton of fun while teaching you to speak cybertronian, and you both get a good laugh out of it, because humans pronounce the things kinda differently
•Also Jackie’s handwriting is total crap and if you want to learn how to write cybertronian, he’s gonna have to show you the alphabet on a datapad
~Knockout~
•He of course teaches you all kinds of lovey dovey stuff, and you can teach him stuff on your own/secondary language, (whatever is not english)
•Knockout has a lot of fun teaching you totally stupid stuff, like curse words and dumb sentences, which you can then yell at Starscream
•Knockout of course wants to know how to say “fuck” in multiple languages
•Knockout has a pretty chill way of speaking, not formal or anything, like Soundwave for example
•Knockout’s handwriting is usually really neat, but when he takes his notes it’s like any other doctor’s, so don’t even try to read those notes, no matter how good you get at the language

Hey! I was wondering if you could do promt #3 for Hyde x reader? (Love your story telling btw)
I (fake) love you - Steven Hyde x reader
Tumblr media
a\n: this somehow ended up as a fake dating au but i’m not mad
trigger warnings: cursing, weed mentioning, Hyde and reader are pretending to “do it” as Kelso would say, i’d say it has some angst and fluff but nithing too extreme.
I was always good at reading people. Normally, I could talk to someone for 5 minutes and know everything there is to know about them, for example, the first time I met Michael Kelso, I knew immediately he’s dependable, loyal and likes to be pushed around. Most people thinks it’s his lack of smarts that makes it easy to manipulate him, but the truth is he just seeks attention, he grew up in such a big family, and as just another sandwich kid, he never got that much attention. He’s more than just a good-looking, brainless goofball.
Eric Forman? Smart kid, heart of gold. His father crashed his self esteem and his belief he has no worth sunk so deep into his brain he’s not even trying to prove it wrong. He’s not just a nerdy smart-ass, too bad he’s scared of his potential.
Donna Pinciotti is the girl who will go far. She’ll make history, i can tell you that. She is passionate, and she will not hesitate to fight over what she sees right, yet will admit if she did you wrong. She grew up in a loving family overall, but she doesn't want to end up like her dad: rich, lazy and stuck in a small town. She’s a big city kind of girl.
Fez is sweet, desperate and eats candy to cope with his loneliness. He’s not afraid of his feminine side, and cares about his looks in a different way then Kelso. He might be weird, and have a tendency to say the most inappropriate things, but he never looks to hurt someone or make them uncomfortable, he just wants to feel loved.
Jackie Burkhart was a bit harder to crack, and her first impression on me was semi-wrong. I could tell she’s more than a spoiled brat, I just didn’t know if it’s in a good way - like, she might be smart and kind, with a broken point of view in the world but she’s willing to look at it from a different point of view. On the other hand, she could be a mean, spoiled brat who’s going to succeed big time by manipulating the hell out of everything around her. Turns out it’s a little bit of both - she’s kind, and she learns the world is not all glitter and unicorns, but she manipulates to get things her way. At least she doesn't make a fuss when she doesn't get what she wanted. Well, not as much.
With all that, there was still one mystery in the little group I found myself a part of: Steven Hyde.I could not tell you a thing about him. I knew the basics - his name, the fact his parents are not there, and that he likes weed, beer and Zeppelin. He hid every sign of emotions behind sarcasm, and had walls taller than anyone i’ve ever met.
I started hanging out with them when I moved here. Kelso made a move on me the second he saw me, and he still tries to this day, but it’s obvious our relationship is strictly platonic and it’s not going to change, even though he thinks it’s better. One time I jokingly agreed and he said, and I quote, “ew, no, you’re like a sister to me”, but he keeps on making sexual advances on me for the sake of the joke.
I quickly befriended the rest of the guys (and girls), and even though i learned to love all of them, there was someone i really loved. Not Kelso, he’s practically my brother, it was Hyde i was so into, but i can’t tell you why. Maybe it was his sense of humor, maybe it was his kind heart or maybe it was the challenge.
“Hey, (y\n), penny for your thoughts?” Donna said, breaking the silence. The TV was on, but it was clear my head is somewhere else. “She’s thinking ‘bout Hyde” Kelso was quick to tease. “Shut up” I growled at him, and suddenly everyone’s focus was on me. Hyde wasn’t there, Kelso might have zero tact, but he would never throw me under the bus, cause he knows i will get into the bus and run over him. It was me and him on the couch, and Donna and Eric across from each other on the chairs as a way to avoid them making out instead of hanging out with their friends. “(y\n), do you want to tell us something?” Eric asks. “I- no, it’s stupid. Kelso is stupid, remember the time he ate a blueberry on a field trip and it ended up being the poisneus one we were warned about when we arrived?” i said, hoping it will drive the attention to tease him and not me. “Oh, that was funny, but not as funny as the time he revealed you have a crush on Hyde” Donna said, “but good try”. I sighed. “Look, it’s not like i’m in love with him or something, he’s just a mystery I want to solve. A mystery with a kind smile and great sense of humor. Look, it’s nothing, Kelso is just obsessed with the idea his best friends will date” i said. “oh, Tell them what you told me, come on! It was hilarious” Kelso said, ignoring the last part of my confession, and when I refused he decided to share my words he did it himself. “God, Kelso, his voice is so hot, i can listen to him for hours even if it’s just the stupid car that runs on water non-sense” He said, immitating a high-pitched voice that didn’t really sound like mine. “That is not what i said” i tried to redeem myself, but Eric and Donna were too busy laughing to hear me. “I just said he’s voice is calming” I kept trying.
“Who’s voice?” Hude asked as he jumped over the couch and took the open spot next to me. “Y-” Kelso started, but i hit his chest, “-our mama” he changed the ending of the word, “BURN!”. “I was talking about the weather guy” I made up, but did I lie? “You’re so weird, man” Hyde sighed, stretching and leaving his hand on the couch. “Well, kelso, we have this thing, you coming?” Donna said, “with Jackie, the double date i can’t believe i agreed to”. Kelso looked confused, “it’s tomorrow”. “No, it’s today” Eric insisted, winking at him and nudging his head at me and hyde. “What? Jackie is going to kill me-” “we won’t tell her you forgot” Donna plays along. I saw right through the act, but kelso really thought he forgot.
He left the basement along with Eric and donna. It wasn’t the first time me and Hyde we’re alone, but usually it was Kelso ditching me and Hyde when the three of us hung out to try and get a girl to sleep with. I’m telling you, one day he’ll get someone pregnant.
“What’s with them?” Hyde sighed and got up to get a popsicle. “Who fucking knows?” i replied, trying to think of a way to change the subject. “You saw how Eric pointed at us? Like what, are they trying to get us alone?” Hyde continued, handing me a popsicle as he sat down. “I- yeah” i admitted, “Kelso has this crazy idea, he wants us to date cause we’re both his best friends or something” i explained, leaving out the part i was on board with the idea, and the fact that it was originally mine. “Oh, we should totally prank them!” Hyde said, “like, let’s pretend to date and be the most annoying couple ever”. I looked at him confused. “Like, we can use cutest couple names, ditch them to be alone or just make out in their face constantly” his smile got wider and wider, and I can't say no to that smile. “Sure, yeah, could be fun”.
The next day, I walked in the basement wearing your favourite outfit, ready to annoy the heck out of my friend. The moment you entered the room, Hyde got up and pulled you onto a hug. “Hey, lover boy” I said, kissing him on the lips. We had to practice doing that without laughing. We kissed like, 10 times yesterday when we planned the prank, his reply kept breaking us and we had to do it again. “Hi, apple pai” he said, kissing me one more time. Everyone looked at each other, exchaging “what the fuck?”s with their eyes. Hyde placed his hand on my waist and walked me to the couch, “Steven!” I laughed when he picked me up in bridal style and sat down, resting me in his lap.  “God, babe, you look so hot today” Hyde said, sliding his hand down my side, settling on a not too sexual but not that friendly spot on my thigh. It was all planned, and fake, but the blush on my cheeks was as real as it gets. “Well, lover, I wanted to dress up for you” I said, fidgeting with the collar of his shirt. “Uh, guys, what’s going on?” Jackie was the first to speak. “Oh, well, yesterday Kelso, Eric and Donna, pulled a little trick to get me and Hyde together, and it worked” I smiled. “Yeah, guys, thank you so much for helping me get with the most beautiful girl in the world” Hyde agreed, looking at me through his rosy sunglasses. I took them from him. “Hey!” he said, but before he got them back I put them on. I slide them down my nose and look up to him. “That was hot, so i’ll let it slide this time” he said, taking the glasses off of my face. The script we wrote was absolutely perfect.
The days have passed, and soon they turned into weeks, and our little show kept going.  I’ll admit, kissing Hyde and ditching the gang to hang out with him (we pretended to leave for a different reason, tho), the fake double dates… it was fun. The longer we pretended to date, the more our couple-y behavior stuck with us, like, one time we met up for a pretend-date and he kissed me when he saw me. I kissed him back, it just felt natural. We got a good laugh out of it, but it happened more than once. I knew I had to ask him to stop this, because my feelings kept growing but he had none, plus I know he kept fooling around cause i’ve seen girls flirting with him, and they always left together.
We were in his room now, pulling another trick. “Oh, lover, yes” i called, trying to sound as breathless as i can. “Oh, buttercup, you're soooo hot” Hyde called, and jumped on his bed, making it creek. I had to really hold my laugh as I joined him.
“Oh, babe, you’re so good” I called, adding some moans in between words. “Nice” he whispered. We heard the door knob being messed with. Hyde was quick to push me down on the bed. He took off his shirt, hinting me to do the same as we got under the sheets. He got on top of me and pushed his lips against mine just as Michael opened the door.
“Dude!’ Steven called and pulled the covers over us as he fell on his back next to me. “Dude, we can hear you, that’s so gross. You two are-” Michael started. “Well, you can just take your hangout somewhere else, Kelso” i said, throwing the first thing I could grab in his face. It was my shirt. “Yeah, we are kind of in the middle, man” Hyde said. The moment Kelso left, Hyde and I started laughing like crazy.
“That was..” i said as he got up. “Yeah, i’m so good” he said, mimicking my breathless voice. “K, give me my shirt back” i said, trying not to look at his bare chest, and not luckily, he was already putting on his shirt.  He went up to the door. “Kelso took it” Hyde said, grining. “Well, shit” I sighed, but he had a solution. “Take this” he said, and tossed me a Led Zeppelin shirt. “Thank you, lover boy” I said, staying under the covers. He looked at me, waiting. “Well, turn around, creep” i said, laughing. “As your boyfriend-” he started, but gave up when his eyes met mine, “fine”. He turned around, allowing me to put on his shirt. “You can look now” I said, fixing the shirt. “How do i look?” I asked. “So hot, buttercup” he replied, smirking and wrapping his hands around my waist and kissing me, forgetting that we are not actually dating. “Hyde, we need to break up” the words slip out of my mouth.
“what ? why?” he asked, “i mean, this is the best prank i ever pulled, and the most enjoyable” he said, his lips stretch into his familiar smirk. “Because-” i tried, but couldn’t come up with a good reason other than the truth. “I mean, you have to admit it’s fun” he said, his hands still around my waist. “Well, yeah, but not for the reason you think” i say, and the confused look in his eyes hurts me. “I- Hyde, this is.. Look, I know you’re sleeping around and that’s gonna blow our cover ``I finally find an answer, “you don’t want your friends to think you’re a cheater”. He looked even more confused. “(y\n), i haven’t touched any other girl since we started... this” he replies, pointing at me and at him. “But i saw you-” I insisted. “I couldn’t, every single time” he admits. Taking the sunglasses resting on his cabinet and putting them on. “Why would you do that? You really expect me to think a horny teenager gave up making out, possibly more, with really hot girls because of what? He’s fake dating a random girl?” I laugh sadly. “No, god, (y\n), you are not some random girl” he says, resting his hands on my arms. “Why-” “because i love you!”.
I don’t know who was more surprised at his words - him or me. We stayed quiet. “Are you- are you gonna say anything?” he broke the silence. “How about i’ll do something instead?” i said, taking a step closer to him. As I moved closer, I placed my hands around his neck. “What are yo-” he tried to ask, but I pulled myself up and connected our lips. Even though we kissed before, this time it was different. His lips moved against mine in a mix of relife, passion and love. He tasted like mint, orange flavoured popsicle and weed. “I forgot to mention, I love you too” I said, breaking the kiss. “Whatever man” he said, re-connecting our lips.

Your legs were bouncing as you sat in Lauren’s front seat, staring blankly out the window. You were focused on your breathing techniques to settle yourself, settle your pre-outing jitters. It had been a surprise, after all.
Eddie had called earlier and asked if you were available for a rescheduled lunch outing. You’d given the affirmative and Lauren had helpfully offered to bring you downtown to the cafe on the way to some errands she needed to run. You knew that she was offering just to be nice and give you some comfort and more time to transition to being in a social situation, but you appreciated it...even if it felt like your mom driving you to a High School dance.
The car halted at a stoplight and you automatically glanced at your landlady, just in case she wanted to talk to you.
Her finger tapped the steering wheel before she twisted to look at you, signing “Are you sure you’re going to be okay?”
“If I’m not,” you sign back, “you’ll be the first to know. Just keep your phone close. But I think I’ll be okay. Eddie is nice.”
Lauren gave you a meaningful glance as the light turned green. Her thoughts reflected the look, full of a fierce protectiveness, one that all but screamed "if he makes you uncomfortable I will end him."
You fidgeted, tugging at the edge of your frilled blouse. You’d wanted to dress up since it was the first time in a while that you had gone out with a friend, but you were starting to remember why you never wore your nicer clothes: they were itchy and still felt too new. Just the minor friction of the less-than-comfortable fabric was stressing your nerves even more.
You took notice of the anxious energy building and took a few deep breaths before resuming the meditation breathing pattern you had learned in one of your infrequent therapy sessions. After a few minutes of focus, your heart rate slowed and you felt more grounded. You glanced away from your feet and out the window, realizing that Lauren was now looking for a parking space or some free pavement space to drop you off.
You pulled out your phone and started typing.
We just made it. Looking for a spot to stop.
Your phone indicated that Eddie had read the text. You pulled down the sunshade and checked your appearance, fiddling with the microscopic flaws that had developed.
This might be a meeting between friends, but Eddie was still a relatively new acquaintance--he was still investigating you and deciding what labels to give you. It was a time to put your best foot forward. Especially since he'd gotten a glimpse of your...issues.
You glanced at your phone, expecting to see the beginning indication of a return text, but instead you heard some muffled shouting. You automatically turned your head towards the sidewalk and saw a familiar figure waving at the car from the street.
“ EDDIE! SHE SAW US! CAN YOU  HEAR US?!”
The mental yelling rang through your skull, making you wince a little at the invisible volume. You waved out at them and tapped Lauren on the shoulder before she crossed the intersection.
“Eddie is over there,” you pointed out, letting her take the time to follow your gestures and resume looking back at you. “I’ll get out here. I will call your phone if I need to get picked up and text you the details.”
“If it vibrates, I’m turning right back around,” she promised. The two of you shared a quick hug before you unbuckled yourself and stepped out. Careful of other cars, you quickly speedwalked over to the sidewalk where your friends waited.
“Good to see you again,” Eddie greeted you, lifting his hand for a high five. You smiled and reciprocated.
“ DON’T IGNORE ME ,” Venom complained, sounding for all the world like a kicked puppy. You reached up and patted the sleeve of Eddie’s jacket, where you knew the alien was hiding. The preening feeling from Venom’s thoughts made you want to laugh aloud.
“So...lunch?” Eddie asked. “Have you tried this new cafe? They really go hard into the whole ‘sourdough is the food of San Francisco' thing. Probably meant to get the tourists, but the sandwiches still are great.”
There were a lot of things to respond to in that brief sentence and you fumbled with your conversation cards, flipping through them to string together a sentence that made sense.
“No. That sounds interesting. Let’s go.”
“It’s just this way,” he gestured, straightening from bending closer to read your cards. “Stick close; we might hit some of the lunch rush on the way in.”
You grabbed another card.
“I’m not good with crowds.”
“Then we can order to go and find somewhere else to sit. It’s no problem.”
“ WE WERE GOING TO SHOW YOU MY SURPRISE FROM LAST TIME ANYWAY. THE PRIVACY WILL HELP ,” Venom added.
Eddie offered his arm and you blinked at him before you caught his thoughts. He wanted to make sure you stayed beside them since you couldn’t very easily let him know you were being left behind--not like how most people let their friends know. Venom’s feelings were tacked onto the thought, revealing that he liked the thought of you holding onto them because he could protect you better the closer you were.
You looped your arm through Eddie’s.
The walk to the cafe was silent from a vocal standpoint: Eddie and Venom conversed with one another about their thoughts on the food and their past experience, the more deliberate wording telling you that they were actually talking to you without expecting any replies. All the same, you couldn’t help but feel awkward at how every passerby viewed you--both pedestrian and driver. Most thought you were on a date, others were convinced you just didn’t want to get separated. Almost everyone wondered why you and Eddie weren’t having a conversation. After all, wasn’t it the polite thing to do when out for a walk?
“ ARE YOU LISTENING TO US, MORSEL? ”
The symbiote’s question pulled you back. You’d gotten caught up in the overwhelming noise of everyone else’s thoughts, losing your ability to distinguish internal words from external ones with the din of other people’s conversations mixed with their observations of you. But Venom’s mental voice was much louder than the humans walking past and was able to cut through the ceaseless hum.
You immediately reached for one of your cards, feeling the well worn, bent corners and not needing to check it for the words on it.
“Sorry.”
You reached for another, equally used phrase.
“It’s difficult to explain.”
“Hey, no worries,” Eddie replied, tone deliberately soft so as to comfort you. “You just looked like you were spacing out a bit and I wanted to make sure you were okay. We’re almost there.”
You nodded and let your friend resume guiding you, deliberately focusing on his and Venom’s thoughts to let the others fade into background noise.
“ I tried your name a few times, but you weren’t answering. I’m glad you’re okay for now. Do you think you’ll be okay in the shop? Just because it’s closer quarters. ”
“ EDDIE, WE FOUND HER IN A GROCERY STORE. I’M SURE SHE CAN HANDLE A FOOD TRANSACTION. ”
“ Do you remember the spoons metaphor I told you about? ”
“ AND I STILL DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY IT HAS TO BE SPOONS! IT JUST MAKES ME THINK OF FOOD AND I AM ALWAYS HUNGRY. ”
Their banter was comforting. Their partnership might still be relatively new by normal standards, but spending all their time together--literally every waking moment--had quickly built their bond beyond what two ordinary humans could achieve in similar circumstances. They had actually reached a point where words, while convenient to keep their identities distinct, were not entirely necessary. Images, sensations, memories, all were equal communication tools.
It almost made you jealous at how easily they could literally share their thoughts with one another. You were stuck having to pretend you were oblivious to what people really felt.
The cafe was nice and cozy. There thankfully wasn’t a huge line--it gave you plenty of time to pick what you wanted from the menu and look at the carefully selected decor of the shop (mostly to ignore the man standing behind you, who was actively checking out anyone who looked to be of age and was daring to show even an inch of skin). You typed up your order on your phone and showed it to the cashier, who thankfully took it all in stride and smoothly got the process started. Eddie ordered a healthy sandwich and a slice of very rich chocolate cake, which had Venom purring at the thought of dessert.
You slipped out of the cafe, the line having grown significantly behind you and your friends even in just the short time. You could feel a headache forming from the combined vocal and mental chatter as you held on to Eddie and let him guide you away.
“Are you okay with taking a few backroads?” he asked and you saw he’d noticed your scrunched brow. “Just for some peace and quiet away from the main street? It’s probably only going to get louder.”
You nodded vigorously and Eddie picked up his pace, practically pulling you along with his brisk speed. He guided you through an alley onto a much narrower footpath with significantly fewer pedestrians, hesitating as he silently asked Venom to help him remember the way to a green space he remembered eating at before.
You took the break to check yourself over for signs of overstimulation. So far, nothing that some cleansing breaths and food wouldn’t take care of.
And then, like a ping on a psychic radar, you heard a familiar mind call your name.
“ Y/N?! But didn’t the suits snatch her?! ”
Your eyes snapped over to where you felt his thoughts and your heart began to race as you saw a face you’d prayed would never cross paths with you again.
At a first glance, he wasn’t a physically imposing man: barely five and a half feet tall, he didn’t show any obvious muscle or have any “red flags” to his features that might suggest he was dangerous. You almost would have looked right past him--his hair hadn’t been a blonde crew cut when you’d seen him last--but those deep hazel eyes held yours prisoner. You didn’t even need your powers to see the obvious greed ravaging his thoughts.
“Y/N? Hey, are you with me?”
Eddie’s words felt like they came from far away, even with Venom echoing them with his impressive volume. You were just staring at the other man, a silent scream trapped in your mute throat.
Your sight was suddenly filled with brown leather as Eddie stood in front of you, bending over to look you in the eye.
“Y/N,” he repeated. “Are you okay? Are you present? Can you tell me what’s wrong?”
“Excuse me.” The familiar voice made your skin break out in goosebumps as a chill ran down your spine. “Ma’am, are you going to be alright?”
You jolted backwards, throwing your hands up to clamp over your ears. It was a futile attempt to block out the feeling of his mind, his thoughts, the way he felt the world and took delight in your weakness, in your fear, in the worry of the others who were witnessing your distress…
“ EDDIE, MASK? ” Venom asks.
“ It’s too public ,” his partner protested silently even as he verbally stated, “Don’t crowd her please.”
“Let’s go,” you signed frantically, unable to stop fixating. “Please.”
“Come on,” Eddie ushers you,  holding out a hand for you to take--which you did with an iron grip. “It’s not far.”
You kept pace with your friends as you put rapid distance between yourself and your old acquaintance, still highly aware of those hazel eyes on you. The sound of the city faded as your feet hit grass and Eddie sat you down onto a bench, dropping to one knee by the armrest.
“What do you need me to do?” he asks, looking you over.
“ WHAT CAN WE DO? ” the symbiote echoed.
You just kept holding Eddie’s hand, fighting tears as you made yourself breathe deeply, clinging tighter when he tried to retract.
They were concerned. They wanted to help. And that was enough to help ground you to the point where you could pull out your phone.
I’ve met that man before. His name is Mitch. We used to be friends. It didn’t end well.
“ I’M GOING TO EAT HIS HEAD! ” Venom howled. His human counterpart took the revelation a little better: he took a second to process it--suppressing the flurry of questions that flooded his mind--and then he stood to join you on the bench.
“Do you need to talk about it now, or do you just want to put it aside for now?”
Put it aside. Please.
“Not a problem. Shall we eat?”
You were a little surprised he agreed so quickly--especially with how vocal Venom was being--but it was a relief nonetheless. You opened your take-out bag and retrieved your food, setting about enjoying it despite the residual shakiness in your hands.
You were about half done when a realization struck you, making you bite your tongue by accident. You jolted your phone out.
Did you respond to me signing back there?
Eddie read it and then laughed a little.
“Uh, so about the surprise Vee had for you...I’ll let him show you.”
“ FINALLY! ”
You watched curiously as Eddie relaxed and then his hands began to move--and you could see in his mind that he wasn’t in charge of the motions. This was all Venom.
The motions were careful and slow, but you sat straight up as Eddie’s hands started forming familiar words.
“Hi. My name is--” there was some hesitation as they briefly conferred with what name to use but they quickly resumed-- “V-E-N-O-M. It is good to talk to you.”
You gasped and gave them a brief applause. You then returned to typing.
How did you learn that so quickly?
“Vee has lots of free time when I’m sleeping,” Eddie shrugged, smiling as he regained the use of his arms. “He’s been looking at Sign dictionaries trying to string that whole phrase together.”
“ I’M BETTER AT FINGERSPELLING ,” the alien admitted, still basking in pride. “AND I KNOW ALL OF THE BASICS: HUNGRY, EAT, DRINK, YES, NO, GO, STOP, PLEASE, THANK YOU AND CHOCOLATE.”
You laughed soundlessly as Eddie rolled his eyes.
But why? You asked. Why go to the trouble?
“ BECAUSE WE WANT TO MAKE IT EASIER TO TALK TO YOU MORE! ” There is no hesitation in Venom’s response. “ IF YOU ARE IN TROUBLE, WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS WRONG QUICKLY! ”
“Not that we’re expecting trouble,” Eddie adds. “I just figured it would be helpful in general. But you’re gonna have to forgive me if he--” he tapped his temple--“has to do some translating in the beginning since he’ll pick it up way faster than me.”
You could feel tears pricking at your eyes again. They were willing to learn Sign for you? No other friend had been willing to do that for you since High School.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” They’d noticed your watery eyes. They were worried. They knew you had been stressed out during the whole outing and wanted to make you comfortable and safe.
Nothing,” you fingerspelled, taking care to make each letter distinct so they could more easily follow. “Thanks.”
“ EDDIE, I WANT THE CAKE NOW ,” Venom complained, changing gears faster than you or Eddie expected. “ WE HAD YOUR HEALTHY SANDWICH, NOW GIVE ME THE GOOD STUFF. ”
“ You absolute addict ,” Eddie thought back, taking a determined bite of mostly lettuce just to make the symbiote pout. You gave another silent laugh as you too returned to eating, happy to just listen to their chatter for a while longer.

The conclusion to the VA/BL reread with Silver Shadows and Ruby Circle (here’s the post on FH, here’s the post on the VA closers SB and LS)
I think I forgot to emphasize this in the last post: it is bullshit that Adrian still had the Alchemist-paid-for apartment after the events of “TFH” and only becomes more unbelievable that Trey has it still in “SS”... I do not get it
Like with SB and LS, I would make a lot of plot changes in the adaptation.
Silver Shadows
Fun fact: her golden lily on this book cover actually flashes a little gold in the right lighting, and I love that
This one, especially the majority of Sydney’s stuff in the first half or so of the book, was much better than I remembered.
Adrian’s stuff had me far less forgiving. I realize he’s struggling with a fictionalized elevated form of bipolar disorder and he developed addictions in trying to self-medicate over most of his adolescence/early adulthood so far, but as far as his actions go... the part where he blackouts for something like three weeks while in Sydney’s chapters she’s so certain he’s going to rescue her... it really frustrates me. Especially because Richelle writes him as self-flagellating over it, but Sydney immediately reassures him “oh, no, I just got the gas turned off, you couldn’t have really done anything...” as if those three or so days weren’t a big deal with the way the time crunch worked out later... it’s one of those heavy-handed things where I don’t feel like Richelle ever actually makes Adrian own up to his errors in the same way the rest of the main characters have to. Including: Wesley Drozdov and his motley crew show up again, and Adrian plays big hero and outs their dabbling attempt on Sydney, and then with Keith later on thinks to himself “at least I’d taken no for an answer from girls” as if he hadn’t insistently pursued both Rose and Sydney (including the scene at Alicia’s Victorian inn in IS) and been revealed to have dabbled at least once. Like, good that he’s trying to make up for past behavior, but again and again it comes off to me as glib or insincere (in the way it’s written- that he’s some model that is exempt from causing harm). This especially pisses me off in the way he treats his mom for sticking in a loveless marriage to his dad (did Adrian forget about his mom’s affair with Ambrose btw?) for financial security, and even with the hypocrisy being pointed out to him and him begrudgingly admitting it in his mind, or he drags Nina to Sonya’s to try and get her compensated for her work and she’s all googly eyes at him, but his acts of chivalry feel empty. And this extends to Marcus, too, to a lesser extent. Look, I love Carly (all the Sage sisters mean the world to me) and I’m glad that she became an advocate for fellow survivors and I get what Richelle was trying to do in empowering survivors with Carly’s character, but Marcus’ star-struck admiration of her (being made speechless by her strength) felt weird and make me uncomfortable.
On to Sydney’s stuff, holy hell her side of the story is dark. And this conversion therapy nonsense in it is part of why I desperately want canon queer leads in the adaptation (preferably Sydney herself, which would yes mean Adrian and probably Rose... that’s my prerogative). Is that potentially triggering? YES. But Richelle took that step when she laid it on so thick with the allegory. In the meantime, I love the supporting characters that Richelle drew up to be in the center with Sydney. Emma, Duncan, and the rest (the fellow detainees- not Sheridan... she can burn) and I want more of them (seriously, Richelle made some great underexplored groups with the Unpromised, the Keepers, the Merry Men, and then these additional Rebelchemists). There is a weird mention of Sydney having arranged some supply closets on one of the floors, despite whatever scene she did that in seemingly having been cut (there was also a line Rose ascribed to Victor at the end of Last Sacrifice about sending Jill away, so it’s not unheard of). When I first read the book (with a long break before), the degree to which Sydney was using magic in there felt illogical, but rereading directly from the other books, it is more justifiable. I think the Detainment, and Sydney’s struggles there, is some of the best writing Richelle managed in the books, and I don’t have any changes to that part.
But the escape... is actively worse than I remember it. There are glimmers of some great stuff in there- I mentioned in the last post how much I love when Sydney wakes up Hopper and sobs over him, and that still is powerful. But omfg Sydney (and Adrian) hold up the stupid stick so many times in these chapters. To be clear, first-off: Adrian should have gotten blood before they ever went into the desert. In the worst case, he and Eddie (the night before the infiltration) should have gone off to the side and done a feeding (doesn’t have to be Eddie, since I imagine he actually has a bad reaction to them since FB, but it does have to be someone willing). Eddie would have enough time to recover, especially with adequate food. Setting that aside, the actual events of the escape work for me. So I guess it’s more the after. Sydney and Adrian should have driven straight to Las Vegas (if they wanted to stop in the other town and change clothes and switch cars that’s fine with me- I even like the senior citizen tour they were on; p.s. we never learn if the Ivashkinator was shipped back to Palm Springs or anything, which is very surprising to me). Their decision to stay in a hotel overnight, even as much as Sydney did deserve that kind of relaxation, was stupid beyond belief. I would have preferred they got to Vegas, were spotted by Alchemists but made it to the Witching Hour without issue, and then Adrian got them a room, and that was the point where Sydney relaxed and slept. Consolidate some of that. Let Sydney have her luxury bath, and a haircut from Adrian, and other stuff there. Let her mention to him that the first photo she saw of him was taken near there, and hey, did he know Rose had bought a car in Russia that Sydney loved. And when Adrian goes down to make some money to further their escape, that’s when he realizes they’re being watched- there are too many yellow and orange auras. Let them have a less exorbitant wedding than in the book- no ridiculous mermaid dress that Sydney can’t expect to move in and that is ridiculously expensive (she can still have a beautiful stunning white dress). Let her start with the blue sneakers. Let Adrian find a place to get the ring made, if that’s necessary (or just use the dang cufflinks as are for the time being and pin them to the fancy attire). And Jill sends the chopper directly to the Firenze for an “Italian” wedding. They can still have the showdown with Sheridan on the roof- just simplify everything.
And then when they get to Court- let Sydney do more of the talking. Let her (righteously) call out the conditions in the reconditioning- the torture because she showed empathy to Renee who couldn’t even eat on her own, the torture they inflicted on Emma to break her- she didn’t betray her own kind, the Alchemists are repeatedly betraying their own kind, pushing them into the darkness of an empty hole. Oh, and this necklace around her neck, that Sheridan took for her own before Sydney reclaimed it, the morning glories were painted by the man she loves. And she rejects the Alcehmists having any authority on her. She’s a witch of the Stelle coven; she’s Sydney Sage Ivaskhov damnit. And when her dad tells her that if she doesn’t come with them, these will be the last words she ever gets to say to him? She gets to ask him if he knew what happened to Carly, if he let it happen under his own roof because he wanted a son like Keith more than the daughters he was blessed with. I want Sydney arguing her case, having her real communion. I said the same for Rose and Spirit Bound, and Sydney deserves the same here.
p.s. there are a lot of structural parallels between this book and BP/early SB- Sydney’s reeducation being like Rose’s time in Novosibirsk, the Tasarov escape from SB (which Eddie directly mentions) immediately followed up with a Vegas trip
Ruby Circle
Dang it. Look, I no longer hate the idea of Sydney and Adrian raising a kid. Their ending in RC was a lot better built-up (and a lot less bitter for Sydney) than I thought the first time. But the road to get there...
I hate the Jill being kidnapped by Alicia part (and I don’t buy the Warriors working with her). Honestly, just let them deal with Alicia during the events of Fiery Heart (when next to nothing else is going on). Like, Adrian and Sydney come off really badly in my head for “causing” her kidnapping because of a personal vendetta against them, when they came there to protect her in the first place (I realize the actual fault was with Alicia, but the feeling stands). Also the pointless scavenger hunt leading them from Pennsylvania (so conveniently, even though Alicia would have had to go there to set her traps after abducting Jill in the first place?) a month after the fact to whatever castle (then to Michigan) then to Palm Springs and the infiltrating the Warriors mission... it’s all too much (also I refuse to believe Sydney cast those stinging demons... that’s so dangerous I can’t even). Given the introduction of the Stelle in FH, and the unnecessary Malachi stuff, it works better to do that all then anyways. (I still want Jackie involved somehow of course) Instead of sidelining Angeline at Amberwood, she should get to be involved in the hunt for Jill (same as Eddie was for Sydney).
In other parts... Wesley Drozdov was never a good character. I really didn’t need even a mention of him in this book. I also... don’t buy how stigmatized Adrian was for marrying Sydney. I can see it being a scandal, or a laughingstock, the source of snarky asides and derision, but Richelle never built it in VA or the earlier BL books to being as heinous as she then tried to make it (so that Adrian could feel suffocated by Court, just like Sydney). I would have been much more interested in trying to see Sydney blend in, and take a stand in the Moroi world (and seeing her try to ally with nonroyal Moroi, but that also still not going super smoothly because they don’t like being on the same level as a human), and maybe her trying out her magic with the Moroi fighters that Mia and Christian had formed (that beautiful, blessed little moment), and then if it integrating there didn’t work admitting that it just... wasn’t going to. Rather than not even trying.
I understand that Richelle was building up with Adrian’s fears of completely losing it with Nina, but she just got screwed over in both of these books. (We’re acknowledging that it was wrong of her to kiss him in SS when he wasn’t even conscious, and moving on). And then Olive got screwed. And Neil got screwed. I said before that I don’t mind Sydney and Adrian raising a kid. But I mind a whole heck of a lot that Richelle killed (essentially) Nina and Olive both (in bullshit, tragic ways) and then wrote Neil off so that Sydney and Adrian would have to raise a baby. Let Sydney be pregnant. Let her be recovering from the most traumatic event of her life, she and Adrian forewent protection on their hectic honeymoon/escape, she’s going to be a mom to a Dhamphir and wow that’s going to be weird for her... and meanwhile this allows her to get through to Olive. To promise Olive and Neil that Sonya and everyone else will not use their baby as a test tube. Nina can still go up to the brink (maybe she passes it and the spirit trio of Lissa, Sonya, and Adrian have to heal her), there can still be a Strigoi attack at the Refuge in northern Michigan, but ffs cut the crap treatment of those three to pass on a readymade kid to Sydrian. It is a trope that I loathe. I also dislike the “ohmigod” fangirl characterization of Mallory, and while the Rand stuff was better than I remembered (that is to say, he is terrible and everyone acknowledges that and no one makes light of it the way I misremembered), I could do without it (especially since I’d prefer that if they keep Dimitri and Adrian cousins, they addres it much earlier).
Honestly, I would do the following:
the start of the season for RC (which doesn’t match its name??) has Sydney and Adrian locked down at Court and they can’t help like they want to, so they try to adapt and do what they can there, including Adrian trying to get Nina to calm down; their friends from Palm Springs and Marcus team up altogether and get an infiltration squad with the Warriors of Light; Eddie gets to participate; they rescue Jill, and get some of the data on the Alchemist/ Warrior collaboration
the Moroi Court finally gets into action on the age and family laws in earnest; meanwhile, Sydney is helping carve out a niche for the rebel Alchemists to work with the Moroi, especially for Strigoi hunting groups like what Mia and Christian wanted to organize; Jill and Sydney are helping each other emotionally recover from their respective hostage ordeals; Sydney realizes she’s pregnant, which helps Adrian realize in a dream with Olive that she’s pregnant, and finally sees her location marker
it’s “rescuing” Olive time; Neil gets to go too- with his presence, things don’t all go to shit; there is a Strigoi attack in retaliation for the new hunting groups, but heroes persevere and protect the commune; the data on the Alchemist/Warrior collaboration, and the Rebelchemists work with the Moroi, gives the perfect leverage now to get the Rebelchemists their freedom and establish Sydrian’s future together
SO, after rereading Bloodlines
I dislike Sydrian less than I did, though I still think Adrian could be vastly improved if adapted as a woman
the second half gave Eddie more to do, but still not enough emotional focus on him
man Amberwood and its supporting characters disappeared; I get that Adrian isn’t likely to settle in California long term, but can I please get more resolution to those characters, whether it comes from more focus in IS, or a graduation ceremony or something?
Abe also disappeared which is strange
man, Sydrian have a lot of daddy issues. because their dads are both abusive jerks. but why oh why did Jared end up collaborating with the Warriors for tattoos? was it because of anger over ‘losing’ Sydney or just greed? I’m glad that Zoe and Sydney at least started to heal things, and that Zoe is ok where she is
we still never got answers on who restored Lee... Clarence only showed up for deus ex machina money and shelter and I guess blood (did Marcus ever get to speak to him again?)
minor grievance: Richelle described the Warrior recruits as being almost evenly distributed between men and women, with a slide toward men, before two pages later saying there were 30 potential guys and 13 potential ladies, and remembering that, oh, yeah, the Warriors didn’t really use women on the front line; I don’t want any of that subplot adapted I just... editing?
