"Millenium Actress": My Farewell to Satoshi Kon
Ok, so I was gonna talk about Serial Experiments Lain and its relationship with the concept of “lost media” through analyzing its transmedia projects… But INSTEAD I’m gonna talk about something much more “simpler”, since I don’t have any time left and I’m doing this past the deathline hour. So, everybody knows Satoshi Kon, right? He was a great filmmaker, and I’ve seen his entire filmography recently. Well, I’ve finished it watching “Millenium Actress”, which by the way, it’s a beatiful movie. And why, you would ask, well, my dearest readers (if you take the time to read this of course), this movie is a JOURNEY through the magic of cinema, crossing Japan’s 20th century history and the personal life of its protagonist (the millenium actress, duh), while blending it with her work as an actress. And oh yes, Satoshi-kun always had a great interest in breaking the limits of reality and fantasy, we can see that in movies like “Paprika” or “Perfect Blue” (which the director himself said was like the twin sister of Millenium Actress, just darker); here we get into the mind of our protagonist through the lens of a cameraman and an interviewer, who will get more and more immersed in this weaving story until finally getting into the point where he himself was part of it (he was in love with the actress, just not corresponded). The reality of her life, and the fantasy of her acting career in the movies she made are intertwined by a single driving force: her wanting to meet an old love, an artist she met in times of war, who promised her they would meet again, planting the neverdying seed of adventure and a better tomorrow in her. She came from a very strict home, with her mother wanting for her only a life of marriage. Instead, she took the train, and then she sailed, searching for the artist. That’s how she gets into acting lately. Now, the magic of this film is inherently in its montage. Its frenetic rythm and its beatiful transitions are reflecting choices which can illuminate us into what was Satoshi’s mind: a dark maze, but an intriguing one, which led us inevitably into wonder. One of the last scenes in the movie has this sequence of the actress crossing all ages of Japan History (through the movies she acted) and her own personal experiences, running, always running, trying to get the spectre of the artist. It’s beatiful, and it may be one of my favorite sequences of Satoshi’s work. The music of Susumu Hirasawa (who made the music for the best adaptation of Berserk for TV, 97’s) is trepidant, and takes your heart out, creating the desire in you of wanting to know: WILL SHE EVER MEET THE GUY, OR ARE YOU GONNA MAKE ME SUFFER MORE, DAMN.Here’s the *S P O I L E R* part: she doesn’t. In one of the most heartbreaking scenes of his filmography, we get to meet the artist has died a long time ago. The detective who has appeared over and over in various forms, tells the truth to the interviewer. He knew the truth all along. Why was he then, listening to all this neverending story as it was the first time he has ever listened to it? Because that’s what life is about. You may know how it’s gonna end, but you want to get immersed into it, you have no choice. It drives you into being part of it, so you can decide if you wanna follow your dreams, so you can finally say goodbye, in a launching rocket to the vast sky, saying it was all for grasping the adventure of the search. It may not have been the last film of Satoshi Kon, but its last line made me think of him getting close to his death, and realizing how important was the art and medium he chose for creating stories, that could resonate with all of us. It was, I think, the search of his life. And for that I give him my applause.

About love and artists: A silly little essay to get things out of my head.
Love in and on itself is hard enough to explain. It's a word that encompasses too many different feelings, sensations, types of relationship and that is only thinking of the use of the words towards other people. We love our family, we love our partners, we love our friends and we love icecream. That's a lot of love, so let me try to explain which one I will be talking about here:
The love towards someone we don't know but still feel like home.
I could write many more words about this kind of love, but I believe it is quite unique and different for everyone, so let's leave it at that. Now, how can we love someone we don't even know? Because we believe we do. As humans, we seek for connection, identification and most of all, we seek to feel. Art makes us feel, music makes us feel therefore, artists makes us feel. When I listen to a song from an artist I like and admire half of me relates to the lyrics, melodies and feelings of my own life and experience and the other half relates it to the image I created of the artist in my head. This image comes from a lot, from articles, interviews and photos to more subtle content, perceptions and feelings I have while listening to an interview or watching a live video. With internet and social medias, content is almost infinite and with every video I watch the image I built in my head grows stronger and more and more real.
There is one important point here: This image is not only aparences, it's a whole person, with their values, beliefs, flaws and personality. This image is the artist, the artist is a image that reflects the person behind it and still protects their personal life. It's like a character in a book or movie. Harry Potter is as much of a person as any of us, even if he's a lot of different Harry's in all our minds. But now that I think about it, aren't we all a lot of different versions of ourselves in everyone we know minds? well, let's leave this for the next rambling.
But the love is as real as it can be. We love them. Because how could I not when I identify so much with them? When I feel their fears and feelings through their songs? When I recognize their voice faster then I would my own family? When I have so much of them to go back to when I'm feeling down? Many people judge us, the ones who love artist with their whole being. The fangirls, delussional and naive. That's not it. I dare say its the opposite. What we feel is pure love and we just want to give it, offer it. Its genuine and simple. Beatiful. If everyone could feel this kind of love inside of them, maybe we would have a kinder world. And that's the point of it all, isn't it? To live and to love? To feel and to respect?
We love someone we don't know because they make us feel. And that's more than enough. There will never be something wrong with loving someone.
So keep on loving without shame, keep on respecting the boundaries between the artist and the person behind it, keep on feeling.
And if you came this far, thanks for reading and I LOVE talking about all of this, so if you want to share something, my DM's are always open.

Stories also display repeating patterns because, when expertly made, they reflect the same ideas, themes and events. But because the patterns in story are far more abstract than the visual patterns of a fractal, to see them you have to take a deep dive into the core techniqes of the storytelller. The best storytelling has a unique quality.
The stories we love almost always share this quality.
They are fractal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fractals are one of the wonders of mathematics.
When you chart certain equations they produce beatiful patterns. And a quality of those patterns is that they have infinite dimensions.
Tumblr media
You keep zooming in and in and in to a fractal, and find the same patterns repeating again and again and again.
“If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is: Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern.” - William Blake's poem The Marriage of Heaven and Hell:
The fractal displays this pattern because it is generated from basic rules.

Creators of all kinds have a love / hate relationship with structure. Some equate structure with formula and reject it. Others see structure as the shortcut to success and let it overwhelm them. The truth, as with most things, is likely somewhere in between.
“Burn me with Fire. Drown Me In Rain.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I use this basic principle to measure structure. STRUCTURE IS BIGGER THAN WE ARE. If I set out to make a car, or a cathedral, or an iPhone app, or a novel, or a movie, these things all have a structure. A structure that has been evolved over time, by creators far wiser and more skilled than I.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In martial arts there is a maxim: Learn the form. Master the form. Break the form. Untrained writers often rush to break the form. They see the work of a master, like Ray Bradbury perhaps, who broke the short story form in many marvelous ways, and assume the key to success is the act of breaking. But they ignore the years of hard work Bradbury first put into learning and mastering the form.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stories seem to exist in a bewildering variety of forms. The 3 Act structure defined by Aristotle is arguably the most widely known.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Modern stageplays often adopt a 4 act structure, while Oscar winning movies like The Godfather spread over five acts. Short stories are commonly based on an Epiphany structure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But all of these structures share that same single quality.
They are fractal.

Infinite Crisis

Stories within stories.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s another way into the fractal nature of story. All stories are made of stories, and are part of bigger stories. If you pick up an issue of Wonder Woman, or watch the Gal Gadot fronted movie, you’re seeing just one story within that character’s overarching story. If you watch Lawrence of Arabia, and know a little history, you realise you’re watching just one small part of the story of World War One.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
As storytellers, we make decisions about the boundaries of the story we’re going to tell. Game of Thrones is the story of one power struggle for Westeros. But it’s the beautiful weaving of the history that came before, and the smaller stories within the grand struggle, that make George R R Martin’s epic so intriguing to so many.

Whether you call them acts, scenes, sequences and beats…
…or parts, chapters, paragraps and sentences…
…or story arcs, issues, pages and frames…
…all stories exist are within other stories, and hold other stories within them.

Can you see an epic tale in every single sentence of your story? Here is one of the single best questions you can ask to raise your storytelling to a higher level. How does this single scene, or chapter, or frame, or sentence, reflect the whole of the story? And how does this trilogy of novels, or 10 hour television series, or epic poem, relate to the smallest story it contains?

The Supercomputer That Could Map the Human Brain
Bobby Kasthuri has a problem.
In an effort to understand, on the finest level, what makes us human, he’s set out to create a complete map of the human brain : to chart where every neuron connects to every other neuron. The problem is, the brain has more connections than the Milky Way has stars. Just one millionth of the organ contains more information than all the written works in the Library of Congress. A map of the brain would represent the single largest dataset ever collected about anything in the history of the world.
Tumblr media
Making that map seems like a task that could consume not just one lifetime , but dozens. Yet in just three years, it might just be possible.
Kasthuri, a neuroscientist at Argonne National Laboratory, is one of many scientists whose research will use a new supercomputer the lab is building, which is scheduled to be deployed by 2021. The computer, called Aurora 21 , will run one quintillion operations in parallel—a billion billion calculations—putting it on par with the processing power of the human brain. For the U.S., which has lagged behind China in an intensifying supercomputing race since 2013, this milestone—exascale computing power—is both a national status symbol and a scientific game-changer.

Granny Lee Curtis vs The Perv
Tumblr media
Sooooo, I wasn't going to go see this movie. Based off of the trailer, I just didn't think it would be any good. My first reaction to the trailer was "WHY?! Why, Mike Myers?!" Have you ever see the aging athlete who thinks he/she still has it?:
They can't dunk anymore. They can't throw a football further than my grandmother. They don't even see the fastball go over the plate anymore. They're like "What do you mean strike three? He never threw a pitch." It's just embarrassing. This is how I felt about Michael Myers trying to make another comeback.
Plus, I've always been a Friday the 13th type of guy. I feel like Mike and Jason are in the same game, so you have to pick one. It's like Twilight - Team Edward or Team Jacob. The sickly looking Edward that all of the ladies wanted vs the beefcake Jacob who fewer ladies wanted... I never understood that; you always bet on beefcake right?? Idk, but my beefcake has always been Jason Voorhees - he so much better than Mike in every way:
Tumblr media
Jason is an artist with his kills.
Mike just uses that kitchen knife. Every now and then he'll pick up a crowbar or a hammer, but then go right back to that knife. Change it up once and a while, Mike!
Jason wouldn't simply do his thang at camp sites - he'd be adventurous and head to Hell or even outer space to do his art.
Mike just stuck with his old neighborhood.
And I never liked Mike's mask; I always thought it looked dumb. He looked like one of those Trolls.
Tumblr media
And Mike could never catch his main prey (Jamie Lee Curtis). Jason only let people live to get them after the credits or in the first scene of his sequel (cuz he's a showman). Mike has had 40 years to catch Jamie Lee, and nothing! BUM!
Speaking of Jamie Lee, and I have to say this on the front end. Let's look at JLC
Tumblr media
- beatiful.
I say this because this JLC is not the one we're getting in the movie.
This is the one we're getting -
Tumblr media
I looked at the trailer and I was like "Damn, Jamie. That's dedication to your craft." THAT or Judy Greer (who is also in this flick) saw JLC and said to herself "Even kickin 60, she's too good lookin. I need more attention, so I can steal this franchise from her. Hey, producers, let's oldify her... I'm your new star!" People don't know that about Judy; she's cutthroat. She's got JLC lookin like a closet lesbian, hobo, cat lady.
I'm sorry! She doesn't look bad, I just don't know what look they were going for... she doesn't have to worry about Michael, cuz osteoporosis is right around the corner.
I wasn't about to watch a movie where two senoir citizens are fighting to the death - that's simply exploitive. BUT, JLC & Mikey must have gotten tired of me talkin shit, so they got some good writers, good actors, tons of guns... got John Carpenter to dust off his keyboard for the theme music, and word on the streets is that they made a decent flick! I couldn't pass it up -
This flick starts off with two journalist being curious about Michael and JLC's story. Mikey was chillin in a mental prison somewhere far away - hiding from bad sequels, and they had to come along and rattle the bear cage. DUMB!
Not really a spoiler, cuz most of us know that whoever messes with the monster usually gets eaten by the monster... everyone knows this except these two idiots. There's a doctor with them, when these two go to see Michael. You could see it in his eyes, he knew these two were gonna die. Big dummies.
Meanwhile, Granny Lee Curtis
Tumblr media
Sorry... wrong pic.
There she is -
Tumblr media
She has been living a nightmare. Her house (which Judy Greer, her daughter grew up in) looks like something out of those "Saw" movies. She turned it into a giant trap. Forget panic rooms, this is a panic house! She has turned away all community, and even her own family to prep for Michael. She has even been praying that one day Michael would escape, so that she can kill him. And she's ready!
Apparently, God was bored and granted GLC her request. Michael was being transported and somehow (they never explain) the bus turns over and everyone escapes, including Michael. Cue the Halloween theme music.
What I liked about this movie:
It feels like a solid film. They build up characters. They set mood well. There's actual acting. They have a few scenes where they explore trauma and the effects it has on the individual, the abuser, and the family. Good stuff! I also like that this movie has a retro vibe to it without really being old school. But, we ain't here for Oscar Winning BS - we want killing!
Let the battle begin!
Mikey is back to his old tricks - being crazy slow, using that tired ol kitchen knife, and chasing after dumb/clumsy people. He even gets this one woman while she's on the toilet; that just wasn't right. Mike's a perv, man! He's checking in on ladies while they're in the bathroom, while they're showering, while they're undressing, while they're sleeping. Somebody needs to stop this guy!
Maybe GLC - she has the guns to do it. There was actually contro over the guns (being so pro-shoot'em up!); you know how people are...
Wouldn't you want all the guns in the world if Michael were after you. Not to mention the fact that the police in that town are so useless. There's an actor (Will Patton) who plays the lead investigator. I feel like I see this actor play the same role over and over again. He's always playing the cop who's after a psycho... and he never catches him. Just going from movie to movie, show to show, failing miserably.
I'm not exactly a gun lover, but I'll take all the guns I can get if this is after me.
Tumblr media
Mike ain't no joke either - he gets shot up, gets body parts blown off and still stays calm and keeps coming after you.
I have to admit, I was wrong about this movie. I thought it would suck, and it's actually really good! I mean, Mike Myers is still kind of a bore... and too old for this...
Just look at his mask... that hair line is running back scared, and y'all can't notice too much from this pic, but even the hair on the MASK is thinning.
Tumblr media
Someone is trying to send him a message that he's just not getting. But, everything else about this movie works well!
In fact, the only complaint I have (outside of GLC being insanely strong when close up with Michael... like, normally Mike crushes you when he gets his hands on you but... anyway; maybe GLC has been in the gym and juicin). There's things in this movie that they do well, that I wanted more of -
- the sensitive scenes when they were acting their asses off.
- the killing from Mike - he crushes one dude's skull with his boot... more of that!
- and they have a little kid in this movie who steals the show
Grade: A-
Although, I dig this film, I hope the love I'm sure Mike Myers will get doesn't go to his head, and he ends up doing like 3 more sequels. He'll end up like Sylvester Stallone (who's about to do Rambo - at age older than dirt).
It'll never stop. Eventually, we'll hear that Halloween music playing, and see Mike roll out in a wheelchair to catch GLC at the nursing home - still holding that same kitchen knife, with his mask totally bald. The only thing that will stop him is a lack of ramps.

I also love getting to help people through their creative vision and I’m v good at editing work. Also also, I think it’s very important to be responsible when making advertisements, and developing marketing strategies, especially given how exploitative the industry is currently.
16) Dream trip
Europe!!! I wanna see the castles! the forests!!! go to old towns with cobbled roads and buildings so old they predate modern religion!!! it’s just, wowowowow, so much different architectural styles, so much art, so much different foods and culture and animals and plants and I just, it’s so easy to travel across europe once youre there???
17) Favorite food
gosh it’s v v hard, a good burger is hard to beat just at any time of the day. but,,,,,, pasta tho, homemade ravioli in a bolognese sauce?? off the charts.
Also v important, and just superb lunch meal: Aji de gallina! god i love that dish so much.
18) play any instruments
I can’t keep rythim going to save my life (I do enjoy singing badly while i cook or clean)
19) Favorite song
oh no, uhhhhm,,,, i’m not good at favorite things, here’s a couple i really really enjoy:
- Thumbnail - Louie Zong & BDG - Tribute - Tenacious D - Que bonito es ser un loser - Mundo Chillón - Alquitrán y Carmín - El Niño de la Hipoteca - Why do you feel so down? - Declan McKenna
20) Random fact
I have a fuckton of small moles, and most of them are aligned the same as the three marys (orion’s belt), and is something I really love about my body!
21) Describe yourself as aesthetic things Post-its stuck on walls, the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks while you lie in bed just a few meters away, standing in your kitchen at three in the morning waiting for the water to boil with nothing but white noise and your own tired thoughts to keep you company, reaching out and feeling your cat purr beneath your fingers knowing everything is all right, scrapes and bruises and dirt all over as you rest upon the highest branches of a tree, looking down at your phone and smiling to yourself, eyes glowing in the afternoon sun, a glint of silver in their lips when they flash you a smile.
this took me almost 2 hours to complete wow. and now it’s time to tag people!! I don’t think I know 21 people lmao @c0smicartisan, @magmasheep, @lamentableinsomniac, @we-are-the-crystal-gays, @tyrai (Also hey super no pressure if anyone doesn’t want to do this, and if you don’t want to be tagged next time, tell me and I’ll make sure I keep it in mind) Also!!! If you see this and you wanna give it a shot, consider yourself tagged!

#2: Loving Vincent (2017)
Tumblr media
To be honest I didn’t know this movie existed until I watched a Dr. Who episode about Vincent and then went into Tumblr to look for it and this movie popped up on almost every post, so now, a few months later, I finally watched it.
Well, of course I have to comment on the way the movie was made, which was entirely painted and I think that is extremely amazing and very original, however, I was kind of bored at the beginning of it, I felt it was a bit slow, but I kept watching and then almost at the end of the movie, a conversation that happened shocked me so much that it made me change my whole opinion about the movie: I now believe that this movie gives a new perspective to an advice everyone gives, but almost no one follows: words are something really powerful, and they should be used wisely, since it can change the way people view not only the world, but also, themselves. It’s better to not say anything at all, than to say something you will later regret. We don’t always have to win the argument.
Also, there was this phrase that a character said when describing Vincent that I really liked, it went like this: “[…] No detail of life was too small or too humble for him. He appreciated and loved it all.” I absolutely love that phrase; when I heard it for the first time, the only thing I thought was how beautiful it would be to be described like that. How much love do you need to have towards everything and anything to achieve that sense of appreciation?
I absolutely love Vincent van Gogh’s work. The way he perceived life, and how he transmitted, through his art, that there is beauty on the simple things of daily life, it’s just amazing.
“I want to touch people with my art. I want them to say: he feels deeply, and he feels tenderly.” - Vincent van Gogh

JJ, you are our only hope
The problem is that the film destroys the magic, it crushed what people has loved over the years and what made this saga special. It was like watching any other blockbuster. This makes me think of art, for instance, a new style doesn’t need to forget everything the previous period offered, it never does when it is good, it just takes what it needs from the past to innovate and offer something new.
For me, what this movie did was to take away all the magic and trascendence of the past jedi and the Resistance heroes’ glory and give us nothing relevant in its place. Even the Dark Side was less, just felt less powerful and important than it used to be. Snoke needed to be important but we never got to know why. Kylo is not a clear bad guy either, they didn’t even let us see Hux as a menacing threat.
This film makes me wonder if all the promise we saw in TFA was for nothing in all respects. Perhaps all this tale about balance is just smoke, like everything else, and with Kylo they are going for what they call an interesting movie villain but nothing more. We expected more, that he was an anti-villain, an anti-hero or at least a bad guy that didn’t feel like a carboard baddie. Now I am not sure, perhaps they were only trying to construct a new era baddie, a millenial Darth Vader, but a baddie at the end of the day and not the deep complicated character TFA seemed to promise.
Not even Reylo was satisfying in this movie, there were beatiful scenes but devoid of meaning and impact. The story matters and it wasn’t told right. It wasn’t clear if their connection was really important or not because it wasn’t explored at all, not even Kylo’s tragedy ( including how Luke tried to kill him) was given the time and weight it deserved. Why? They let Del Toro explain why he betrayed Finn and Rose, for instance, but they couldn’t waste time showing us what was behind Kylo’s obsession with killing the past, his dependance on Snoke when it was so easy to kill him after all, why Luke never gave up on Vader but thought killing a boy instead of helping him before he went too far into darkness was a solution, why this same man had to remind his sister nobody is completely far gone, to the same sister who firmly believed there was still light in her son, etc.
Nothing made sense. It was true that Leia seemed to have chosen a surrogate son in Poe and liked him despite his arrogance and lack of concern for the loss of lives or setting up a mutiny whereas she didn’t have time to guide her own son before it was too late. I had read it before in some theories but it was too painful to see it on screen. It was as if they were telling the viewers to give up on him too. When a mother gives up on her son, he must be beyond redemption. Anyone who is a mother can tell you this and probably every child can too.
Leia is good and noble, if she thinks her son is not worth it, who will? Rey? Why? The movie doesn’t show us why she believes in him when no one else does only to be wrong because in the end he disappoints her. Those beautiful connection scenes added up to nothing in the end because the story was told badly. It could make sense that she loves a bad man despite herself, I could have bought that, even a tragic ending, but with depth, not like this.
I have no idea what I saw, really. A beautifully made but empty movie. It had no soul and no magic. I saw no structure, just mess of plots and characters and none of them grabbed my interest, and I wanted to like it. I couldn’t. They didn’t destroy only the original trilogy magic, but also what TFA promised. All the characters and themes became irrelevant, the old ones and the new. For instance, Poe was dashing and charismatic and Finn was relatable, funny and endearing in TFA and they feel just less in TLJ, they disappoint and so do their stories.
Why adding new characters if you can’t make any of the ones you have interesting? Is this Rian’s way to show the audience that we should forget the past and its heroes and baddies because nobody is essential? Are we supposed to forget about the caracters we grew to love, incuding Rey and Finn and root for a different one any time? Do we have too root for the nobodys, meaning the ones the writers did very little to let us know?
This doesn’t work, I was ready to root for the new characters and let go of the old ones but the only character that was treated somewhat right was Luke’s. Now I have to wonder whose story we are meant to watch in the next movie. Are we meant to root for Rey or for any random broom boy?
If I hadn’t seen the posters I wouldn’t know who the protagonists were meant to be. I have no idea why Rian said Rey and Kylo are “the two halves of our protagonists”. That’s not what I saw on screen. I saw Luke’s story and secondly Rey’s but not Kylo’s. JJ and also Mark said this trilogy wasn’t about Luke, Han and Leia but in Rian’s movie only Luke shone.
Well, at this point I have to say JJ is my only hope, but I am very disappointed. Only my love of SW that was born so many years ago and how JJ brought back the magic in TFA stops me from giving up on ST like everyone gave up on Kylo. TFA was not perfect but it was damn good. I don’t agree it was a rehearsal of the OT, it did what creators have to do, not unrooting the old magic but letting a new tree with its new branches and green leaves grow up from it.

I literally discovered this anime by mistake and it was the most beatiful mistake I’ve ever made. It make me laugh, it made me cry, it broke my heart.                    Kokoro ga Sakebitagatterunda.
Tumblr media
As a HUGE  fan of Anohana and toradora  there’s no need to say hoe thrilled I was when This anime movie was annunced. Having Masayoshi takana and okada mari working together once again gave me big expetations. No need to say it was worth waiting.
Okada’s character once again made me love them with all my heart. Jun is literally once of the most human characters I’ve seen in anime and I love it so much. I could relate so much to her “being to talktive problem”. Her problem is so real that actually hearts. Loved it.
Synopsis
Jun is a girl whose words have been sealed away. She was once a very happy girl, but because of a certain thing she said when she was very young, her family was torn apart. One day, the egg fairy appeared in front of her and sealed away her ability to talk in order to stop her from hurting anybody else. Since this traumatic experience, Jun lives in the shadows away from the limelight. But, one day, she is nominated to become an executive member of the "community outreach council." On top of that, Jun is also appointed to play the main lead in their musical...

Hotaru no Haka
No need to say I’m not going to trust anymore any anime with fireflies on the title
Tumblr media
This has to be the most heartbreaking and cruel anime I’ve ever seen and yet only a few seems to know it’s existence.  Probably one of the best masterpiece made by ghibli.
This anime movie is so pure in many ways and all the praise il could recieve would be never sufficient to show how beatiful it is. It’s the proof that a masterpiece survives time. Even after 29 years this movie is out it sill remains a gem among anime.
Whatch this anime if you’re looking for:
A great psychological drama impact, very well developed
The best sibiling love
Real catastrophes, the provoked damages, the victims and the ruined lives of the remained people

How Much Are We Addicted to Our Addictions?
There’s a new sort of addiction that I’ve started to come across in recent years. In my opinion, this is an addiction specific to those interested in spiritual matters, and it’s called spiritual energy practices addiction. People with this addiction feel they must constantly participate in all the up-and-coming spiritual energy practices. After a while, these people never stop speaking about what they gained from this or took from that. As with all addictions, though, the underlying matter is the same... ***** About a few weeks ago, I watched a scene from the spectacular documentary People vs. The State of Illusion. It transformed my outlook on all the existing addictions. Until then, I had looked at all addictions judgmentally, referring to addicts as drunks, weed addicts, sex maniacs, womanizers, gamblers, and so on. I believed them to be sacrificing their families’ sustenance to fuel their addictions. We learn these typical judgments from our parents, our environments, our societies, and TV and movies, and they are likely in most of us somewhere. Sure, all addictions are bad and should be avoided. We judge addicts in many numerous ways. We try to manipulate them. We try to get them to stop by reasoning with them and forcing them to make promises. This rarely stops them doing what they’re doing, because no one thinks to ask, “Okay, but why is he/she doing this?” I also judged addicts, and this question never occurred to me either. While society tells us that these addictions are bad and should be avoided, it also teaches us to label and outcast those who fall prey to them. When it’s a person you love, such as a lover or a relative, you are torn between your love and the pressure to label that person. In short, you get hurt. During that scene in the documentary, I had a moment of clarity. The main character is in jail. He has a guardian he did not get along with in the past. The main character then starts a spiritual development in himself, and he makes it up with his guardian. One day, his old guardian comes and asks, “Can you please help me? I am about to be fired from my job, my wife has left me, and I don’t know what to do...” At first, the character doesn't know how to help him, but he asks the wise jailhouse servant who has also helped him. The conversation is here for you: ***** (Aaron: Man in jail.) Aaron: I got a question for you. If somebody came to you with drinking problem. How would you help? Jailhouse Servant: I would help them to see what was good about being an alcoholic. Aaron: But there is nothing good about being an alcoholic. Is there? Jailhouse Servant: Just like you thought there wasn't anything about this cell when we first met. It is always how you see things. Do you think somebody who drinks so much seems themselves as whole? Aaron: Of course not. Jailhouse Servant: So to help them about their problem is to focus on the idea that something's wrong with them. I'd help them change that view. Because people who sees themselves as whole don't bring that kind of drama into their lives. I'd ask them what might be good about their accessive drinking. Aaron: Nothing. Jailhouse Servant: There always is. When you are drunk what do you thinking about? Aaron: Just, feeling good. Jailhouse Servant: Exactly. No thought for the past, no thought for the future, just being present. The addict desires presence. Sometimes more than rest of us. That is a good thing. Presence is the same value we get from meditation, reading, sports. So i can focus on his problem, or i can focus on his desire to be present. And help him find other ways to do it. Aaron:  I wish i had some way explaining them. Jailhouse Servant: You do, you had it ever since we first met. Aaron: What do you mean?  Jailhouse Servant: Do you have that picture that i give you when we first met?  Aaron: Keep it right my bed every night. Jailhouse Servant: Do you remember what i said when i give it to you? Aaron: Yeah, you were a bit dramatic. And said it had the power to change my life. Jailhouse Servant: Have you ever really looked at that picture? Aaron: Of course. Many times.  Jailhouse Servant: What did you see?  Aaron: A beatiful woman.  Jailhouse Servant: Anything else? Aaron:  It is made up of all kinds of pieces of glass and stone. Jailhouse Servant: Right, it is a mosaic. If you took pieces out of mosaic and looked at them individually, what would you see? Aaron: All kinds of different pieces: Some dark, some cracked, some dirty, some smooth... Jailhouse Servant: How is the picture formed from these pieces? Aaron: Well, suppose from the arragement and the contrast. Jailhouse Servant: Upclose and disected, it is not so nice. But from a different perspective and viewed as a whole. It becomes a work of art. ***** “The Addicted one desires his/her existence.” The key is hidden here. Well, after watching the scene, I found another fantastic example that I have repeated here because it’s also a significant key. But first, to view the underlying cause of the addiction, I’ve brought another perspective with me. Each of us is a part of divine mosaic, similar to the tiny stones of a typical mosaic. Each one of us has an individual structure, and by coming together, we form something more. Just like there is the divine mosaic, we also have our own internal mosaics. These consist of smooth white stones, pieces of glass, fractured pieces of other materials, and other different characteristic features. This all builds up into a whole. However, in the scenarios we live in, we forget our place in the divine mosaic. We feel we are so far from ourselves, so to feel good again, to stop our minds and live like ourselves, we start grasping at alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex, adrenaline, and so on. The real problem comes at the point that we build up tolerance to whatever we’re abusing, and it needs more and more stimulus to excite us. The body always wants and seeks more, but this starts to harm both ourselves and our environments. At this juncture, it is possible to find other ways of feeling our existence with activities like meditation, reading, yoga, sports, and so on. This only helps if we maintain the balance, however. For example, working out at the gym and then progressing to taking steroids is just another kind of addiction. **** Well, now I want to return to the spiritual energy practices addiction I mentioned at the start. Sure, spiritual energy practices can open up some great ways to discover the inner being, but searching for one after another, saying how each one is much better than the last, jumping at each new one, and following anyone who claims to be a guru is just another addiction. Yes, it may ease you for a moment each time, but then to feel the same satisfaction, you need to look for more. Nevertheless, as you bustle around, someone comes and eases you, and you feel the inner being again. In the meantime, though, you are running from something. When you become aware of this, you can find the power in yourself to stand and face whatever you are running from. When you face it and embrace it, you do not need to pursue anything anymore. Of course, you can continue to practice with many mentors and use many methods, but it won’t be because you feel you owe your inner being to them—it will be because you enrich your life experiences with whatever you get from them. ***** Deep down, we are just like the fish in the ocean. We seek the ocean, so we swim around trying to find it, unaware that we’re already in it. This is what our inner being looks like. All we need to do is stop and realize where we exist. At this point, we find the answer to the question of “How much are we addicted to our addictions?” How much are we aware of our inner being? Is it a little or none at all? With infinite love to all addictions, to all my own addictions, to all our addicted brothers and sisters, to myself, and, of course, to the infinite being of all of us... Read the full article

Post R. Collated Quotes
Style:
Jim Jarmusch: “A career overview? I’m not a ‘big looking’ back guy, but I’ll do my best. I don’t even watch my films. Once I’m done with them they’re gone for me.” (Post E)
GA: “ It is entirely made up of discreet shots - every scene consists of one shot interrupted by black film - which is quite a formal or experimental way of telling the story. Why did you decide to do it and what is your interest in those formal things?’’ Jim Jarmusch: “I think it comes from really liking literary forms.” (Post G)
Jim Jarmusch:  “The intention was to shoot short films that can exist as shorts independently, but when I put them all together, there are things that echo through them like the dialogue repeats; the situation is always the same, the way they’re shot is very simple and the same - I have a master shot, if there’s two characters, a two shot, singles on each, and an over-the-table overhead shot which I can use to edit their dialogue. So they’re very simple and because the design of how they’re shot is worked out already, it gives complete freedom to play; they’re like cartoons almost to me. And it’s a relief from making a feature film where everything has to be more carefully mapped out. So I like doing them and they’re ridiculous and the actors can improvise a lot, and they don’t have to be really realistic characters that hit a very specific tone as in a feature film. They’re really fun, I want to make more of them definitely. Sometime I will release them all together, but I don’t know when.’’ (Post G)
“I’m talking about a very particular, all too common response to his work – usually from fans, though also in some cases from detractors. It’s the notion that the main thing to say – indeed, perhaps the only thing to say – about Jarmusch and his films is that they are ‘cool’.” (Post I)
Peter Keogh “ You’re often referred to as a minimalist. Do you agree with that label?”Jim Jarmusch: “I think of minimalist as a label stuck on certain visual artists. But I don’t really feel associated with them.”Peter Keogh: “There are also literary minimalists - Raymond Carver, Anne Beaty”Jim Jarmusch: “I think maybe what they’re saying is that the films are very light on plot and therefore minimal stylistically as well. My style is certainly not Byzantine or florid or elaborate. It’s pretty simple. Reduced.” (Post J)
“Jarmusch can’t be easily pinned down to any cinematic wave or category. “I don’t know where I fit in. I don’t feel tied to my time.”He is certainly not on the same time scheme as the rest of cinema, or indeed, the rest of humanity – which is perhaps why Only Lovers Left Alive is one of several of his films, including Night on Earth and Mystery Train, to take place after dark. Tilda Swinton has said: “Jim is pretty much nocturnal, so the nightscape is pretty much his palette. There’s something about things glowing in the darkness that feels to me really Jim Jarmusch. He’s a rock star.” (Post K)
“As a director, too, there are recurring elements: a minimalist aesthetic, laconic but lovable characters (often played by musicians), a cool compositional remove that invites humour without sacrificing sincerity.” (Post L)
“The second premise of auteur theory is the distinguishable personality of the director as a criterion of value. Over a group of films, a director must exhibit certain recurrent characteristics of style, which serve as his signature. The way a film looks and moves should have some relationship to the way a director thinks and feels.” (Post M)
“…postmodernism reevaluates tradition and openly plays with its rich heritage, often in the form of pastiche.” (Post N)
“…modern American independent film, with Jarmusch as one of its leading representatives, presents us with stories that disrupt the clear unified and causal structure of Hollywood films, thus resembling the pattern of Lyotard’s “little narratives” . While Hollywood films fall into specific genres and strictly adhere to its conventions, the leading representatives of the modern American independent cinema (Jarmusch, Hal Hartley, Quentin Tarantino, the Coen brothers, David Lynch) breakup the generic structures, overthrowing the need for closure, one of the main characteristics of classic Hollywood. The temporal structure is distorted, as can be seen in Mystery Train or Pulp  Fiction, while the focus of the films is not on the active, goal-oriented  protagonist, but on the people from the fringes of society, outsiders who oppose the accepted social norms.” (Post N)
“The underlying tendency of Hollywood films is to present the world as ultimately presentable and  knowable, but a more thorough analysis reveals the realism as only partly rooted and clearly distorting external reality. Mark Cousins labels the Hollywood style closed romantic realism, emphasizing the fact that actors seem to live in a parallel universe (494). Emotions are heightened,  main characters idealized and able to over come any obstacle. Although presenting a parallel  universe, Hollywood tries to create an illusion that the events shown on the screen correspond to  the world around us, thus creating a falsified reality.” (Post N)
“Foucault’s and Baudrillard’s analyses are even more detailed, providing the useful concepts of  hyperrealism and simulation. Illustrating his concept of the third-order image, Foucault claims that  “Disney land is presented as imaginary in order to make us believe that the rest is real, when in fact  all of Los Angeles and the America surrounding it are no longer real, but of the order of the hyperreal”  (Post N)
“The concept of time has similarly been disrupted. Hollywood has always concentrated on kairos,  the significant time, while completely abandoning the presentation of chronos, the ordinary time. The difference between these two concepts summarizes the inherent difference between  Hollywood and the modern American independent film. While Hollywood has concentrated on action and dramatic aspects of storytelling, modern American independent films have explored the moments in-between, the events devoid of dramatic tension, which explains why Jarmusch chose  not to present the most dramatic element in Down by Law, when the three cellmates escaped from prison.” (Post N)
“His second feature Stranger than Paradise, gloriously shot by Tom DiCillo in black and white cinematography, is divided into three parts and separated by fade-outs, whose function is to destroy the illusory nature of the Hollywood invisible style. The post-industrial and scapes of modern America are similar to those in Tarr’s Satantango , providing an anticipatory cultural link. The main protagonists come from Europe, which plays a vital  role in many Jarmusch’s films, signifying the impact of the Other.”  (Post N)
“All of this transpires at a pace that may admittedly prove frustrating for some viewers, but for me Only Lovers Left Alive it as its best during such sequences; in fact, it enters far more problematic territory precisely when it deviates from this rhythm.” (Post O)
“It also points to another significant aspect of the film, which is its use of music; this includes original contributions from Jarmusch’s own band SQÜRL, and a diverse list of other artists and tracks (including Charlie Feathers’s rockabilly classic ‘Can’t Hardly Stand It’). The music within the film functions as a soundtrack to persistent musings about the nature of art and the artist, and their resilience (or otherwise) with the passing of time”  (Post O)
“In the end, Only Lovers Left Alive is exactly what you’d expect from a Jim Jarmusch vampire film: meditative and unhurried, wryly humorous and culturally allusive — and utterly beguiling. In fact, it turns out that the vampire makes for a curiously appropriate Jarmuschian figure, isolated and out-of-time. Its pair of undead lovers may have (quite literally) seen it all before, but they’ve ultimately provided a fresh take on the vampire genre.”  (Post O)
Themes:
Jim Jarmusch:  “Adam and Eve are sort of outside type characters, bohemian types, and they probably already were hundreds of years ago. They’re not exactly a representing the square world to start with. They’re kind of eternal. I hate the word ‘hipsters’, but they are certainly on the outsider’s side” (Post E)
“I guess most of my films are road movies’’ (Post E)
“His characters tend to be losers, drifters and strays.’’…’’His films are about communication, or crippled communication. People who love each other (or who will grow to love each other), but who can’t talk to each other. Often, foreigners can communicate more easily than fellow Americans, despite the language barrier.’’ (Post F)
“GA: The film has certainly got a serious side to it, but it is also very full of humour and that’s something that’s coursed through all of your work. Why is an element of comedy so important to you in your movies? JJ: Laughter is good for your spirit’’ (Post G)
“Nearly all of Jim Jarmusch’s 12 feature films to date are centred around a leading man, often playing a character in the midst of an existential crisis, whose sentiments and actions come to define the spirit of the movie.’’ (Post H)
“Now, it’s true that filmgoers hadn’t seen many movie protagonists like the slightly lazy, generally unremarkable Willie” (Post I)
“Time and again, Jarmusch seems to be telling us that love, friendship, respect for others, and an open, imaginative mind are key to answering that question.” (Post I)
“What fascinates Jarmusch in the vampire myth is less the usual blood-guzzling, though there’s plenty of that, than the educational opportunities afforded by supernaturally extended life.” (Post K)
“His films consistently flout the conventions of American screen storytelling. For one thing, their subjects are not always primarily American, and Jarmusch often shows the US from the perspective of foreign visitors: Italian, Hungarian, Japanese.” (Post K)
“The director’s seriousness is often underestimated, says New York critic and festival director Kent Jones: “There’s been an overemphasis on the hipness factor – and a lack of emphasis on his incredible attachment to the idea of celebrating poetry and culture. You can complain about the pretentiousness of a lot of his movies, [but] they are unapologetically standing up for poetry. [His attitude is] ‘if you want to call me an elitist, go ahead, I don’t care’.” (Post K)
“It’s hard not to see the theatrically suicidal Adam as Jarmusch in disguise, the director’s neuroses in almost human form.” (Post L)
“The third and ultimate premise of the auteur theory is concerned with interior meaning, the ultimate glory of the cinema as an art. Interior meaning is exploited from the tension between a director’s personality and his material…It is not quite the vision of the world a director projects nor quite his attitude toward life. It is ambiguous, in any literary sense, because part of it is imbedded in the stuff of cinema and cannot be rendered in non cinematic terms.” (Post M)
“Only Lovers Left Alive is Jim Jarmusch’s latest foray into genre filmmaking, after the equally idiosyncratic ‘psychedelic Western’ Dead Man (1995) and urban Samurai thriller Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999), and casts the vampire as a typically offbeat, world-weary Jarmuschian outsider.” (Post O)
“Shot for shot, Only Lovers Left Alive is visually stunning, and nothing embodies this more than the sight of Adam and Eve standing back-to-back, his black hair and clothes contrasting with her platinum hair and white clothing, as they gaze up at the former glory of the Michigan Theatre.” (Post O)
“With unassuming casualness, Jarmusch’s soundtracks and cast lists have created a cumulative portrait of the US musical underclass, much of it African American, that reflects his films’ interest in the marginal or overlooked – the drifters, dreamers and beatniks who give that troubled nation its artistic character.” (Post P)
Collaborators:
“Joie Lee, the actress who features in one of the early Coffee And Cigarettes shorts, says Jarmusch is the only film-maker she knows who owns his own films. “Very few directors own their own films - Spike [her brother Spike Lee] doesn’t even own his own films. This pretty much puts Jim in a league of his own. What it means is that he doesn’t have to do things for the studio - he’s autonomous and can realise his artistic vision."’’ (Post F)
“‘’Right!’’ says the Coffee and Cigarettes cinematographer, Fred Elmes. ‘’He always asks my advice, collects the information and then makes the decision himself’’’’ (Post F)
Jim Jarmusch: “I’m not a director who says, “Say your line, hit your mark”, that’s not my style. I want them to work with me and everyone I choose to collaborate with elevates our work above what I could imagine on my own. Hopefully, if not it’s not working right. I’m like a navigator and I try to encourage our collaboration and find the best way that will produce fruit.” (Post G)
“The multi talented John Lurie worked on Jarmusch’s first three films as both actor and composer.” (Post H)
“Hiddleston presents viewers with a character who retains a small inkling of affection for the world, but his own skepticism has become an infectious poison” (Post H)
“It may indeed have at least something to do with Jarmusch’s good looks and his musician friends, but it may also be a consequence of the fact that he first caught the attention of many filmgoers (after his 1980 debut Permanent Vacation) with Stranger than Paradise, in which the protagonist, Willie – played by John Lurie of the Lounge Lizards – might be seen as someone at least trying to appear ‘cool’. Willie is keen to conceal his Hungarian roots (not to mention his Hungarian name), reluctant to play host to his visiting Hungarian cousin, and generally appears happiest with a way of life that’s fairly solitary, slacker-like and self-centred, save for his friendship with the more outgoing Eddie (Richard Edson).” (Post I)
Jim Jarmusch: “Usually I write for specific actors and have an idea of a character. I want to collaborate with them on. The story is suggested by those characters.” (Post J)
Jim Jarmusch: “We do a lot of improvisation in the rehearsal process”…”Then while we’re shooting, how much improvising we do depends on the actors. Obviously I prefer to improvise in rehearsals because you’re not burning money. But some actors need a longer leash.” (Post J)
“The more Hiddleston and Swinton share the screen, the better, because the film lives and breathes through their elegant interactions with one another, and in many ways it presents a portrait of a relationship that is as intimate and low-key as Richard Linklater’s triptych of films Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004), and Before Midnight (2013) — just with more blood-drinking.” (Post O)
“The version of Detroit that is featured in the film is shot through a lens that implies it is the ideal landscape both to engender and reflect Adam’s ennui. In this, it clearly recalls the work of Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre in their hauntingly beautiful photography series ‘The Ruins of Detroit’, and the film as a whole boasts similarly striking cinematography by Yorick Le Saux (collaborating with Jarmusch for the first time” (Post O)
“From the start, he used musicians as actors and looked to music to provide the animating vitality that he resisted visually. Songs say what his characters cannot. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’s throat-abrading scorcher I Put a Spell on You blasts from a tinpot cassette player in Stranger Than Paradise, in which the characters scarcely do more than grunt and glare. That film starred the stringbean-thin, cucumber-cool jazz saxophonist John Lurie alongside Richard Edson, the original drummer from Sonic Youth. It made Jarmusch’s reputation in 1984, back when “indie” really did mean “independent” rather than “the boutique arm of a major studio”. (Post M)
“You could assemble a musical supergroup from his casts since then. Lurie and Tom Waits sashayed through New Orleans in Down By Law, with Waits going on to score Night on Earth. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins played a hotel concierge in a spiffy tomato-red suit in Mystery Train; Joe Strummer and the ghost of Elvis also had walk-on parts. Iggy Pop (the subject of Jarmusch’s recent documentary Gimme Danger) showed up as a trapper in a bonnet in Dead Man, and the White Stripes discussed Nikolai Tesla in Coffee and Cigarettes, where RZA and GZA, both of the Wu-Tang Clan, could also be found knocking back the joe with Bill Murray. The RZA also lopes down the street in Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai, a Jarmusch film he scored.  (Post P)
Auteurism:
Jim Jarmusch: “A career overview? I’m not a ‘big looking’ back guy, but I’ll do my best. I don’t even watch my films. Once I’m done with them they’re gone for me.” (Post E)
Jim Jarmusch: “I don’t read good reviews of my films, I love negative ones. Maybe it’s a little masochism, but more of a matter of, ‘’What do they think? They must be very different to me…’’ (Post E)
“Is he a control freak? Yes and no, he says. He loves to work as a team, but ultimately he makes every decision. "Every tiny detail of a film - the design of a cup on a table, all that. I have the ability to create that world, so I’m very fanatical about it. My films are made by hand. I write the script, I’m there to get the financing, and I put together the whole crew and production. All my films are produced through my own company, then I am in the editing room every day, then I’m in the lab, then I’m out promoting the film, so that’s about three years’ work for each film.” (Post F)
Peter Keogh “Since ‘Stranger Than Paradise’ your sensibility and style seem to be dominant in American independent film-making, and also in film-making around the world, such as the Kaurismaki brothers. How do you account for it?Jim Jarmusch “It’s hard to respond to that. I don’t know if my early films have influenced those people or wether it’s a simultaneous reaction to things being glossy and quick cut.” (Post J)
“Of his generation of US independents, Jarmusch has stayed the course, and stayed weird, while others fell by the wayside (Hal Hartley) or learned to work with the mainstream (Spike Lee, the Coens).” (Post K)
“Another thing that makes Jarmusch distinctive is his genuine independence: he is extremely rare in that he has made a policy of keeping control of his own negatives. But his refusal to play the industry game has not made things easy for him. When Harvey Weinstein pressed Jarmusch to cut his 1995 western Dead Man, the director stuck to his guns – later claiming that his refusal had resulted in the film being half-heartedly promoted on release.” (Post K)
“Jarmusch’s unique sensibility doesn’t always appeal to the market. It took seven years to finance Only Lovers Left Alive, with the film finding no takers in the US. In the end, the project was adopted by European producers, Reinhard Brundig in Germany and British veteran Jeremy Thomas. Thomas sees individualists like Jarmusch as an endangered species. "He’s one of the great American independent film-makers – he’s the last of the line. People are not coming through like that any more,” he said.” (Post K)
“Auteur theory is, unsurprisingly, anathema. “I put 'A film by’ as a protection of my rights, but I don’t really believe it. It’s important for me to have a final cut, and I do for every film. So I’m in the editing room every day, I’m the navigator of the ship, but I’m not the captain, I can’t do it without everyone’s equally valuable input. For me it’s phases where I’m very solitary, writing, and then I’m preparing, getting the money, and then I’m with the crew and on a ship and it’s amazing and exhausting and exhilarating, and then I’m alone with the editor again … I’ve said it before, it’s like seduction, wild sex, and then pregnancy in the editing room. That’s how it feels for me.” I tell Jarmusch that I always likened the process to preparing a meal. I see pre-production as listing the ingredients, production as shopping for them, and the pivotal step of post-production as the actual cooking. Jarmusch thinks this over for a moment, his eyes falling back to his empty plate. He stands, abruptly, and extends a big hand beneath a bigger smile: “Cooking is good too, but I prefer sex.” (Post L)
“I will give the Cahiers critics full credit for the original formulation of an idea that reshaped my thinking on the cinema.” (Post M)
“The three premises of auteur theory may be visualised as three concentric circles: the outer circle as technique; the middle circle, personal style; and the inner circle, interior meaning” (Post M)
“…the first premise of auteur theory is the technical competence of a director as a criterion of value. A badly directed or an undirected film has no importance in a critical scale of values, but one can make interesting conversation about the subject, the script, the acting, the color, the photography, the editing, the music, the costumes, the decor, and so forth.” (Post P)
“This creates the illusion that the music is emanating from inside that footage, which feels exactly right. Jarmusch came to prominence in the early 80s, when movies were first being used as tools to sell soundtrack albums, but his were different. Music wasn’t there to shift units; it lived in the fibres of the celluloid.”  (Post P)

MY FIRST THEATRE EXPERIENCE
Tumblr media
Well, I know that I'm not the artistic lot. The only musical instrument I can play is pianica and my body is so rigid that I may look like a robot if I try to dance, and don't ask about my singing (not so different with the sound of dying whale). But, I love arts, even though I know so little about them. Believe it or not, my eyes became teary every time I got to listen "Gaudeamus Igitur" sung by the choir in those graduation days. Yeah, vivat academia! (Some people might think it's "lebaaay", but I don't care, because vivat professores! Haha).
Yeah, yeah, I know, it's getting away from the title, this writing. Let's back to the point then.
So....hurray! Last night on 10 of March, I have to put it in my important moment in life: MY FIRST THEATRE EXPERIENCE! I'd watched some theatrical show carried out by the fellow students back in my hometown, but what I mean is the professional theatre. It is "Billy Elliot". I don't think it is famous in Indonesia, although this act was adapted from a movie in same title. But, it is really really awesomely terribly famous in the UK. Last month, my housemate introduce me this movie, so that was the first time I heard about it too. This is a story of a Durham miner's son who wanted to be a ballet dancer, which was not quite right that time because boys were supposed to do boxing rather than dancing. Not only that, somehow the story writer managed to put some political and cultural aspect of Durham miner community. The movie is incredible and after watching it, we (my housemates and I) continued to watch the musical DVD. I was amazed, thinking that an 11 years-old boy was able to dance and sing the whole 2.5 hour show!
But, the DVD is not enough, no of course! We want to have the live show. So, we got our tickets (which was quite hard to find at the first time, because they're almost all booked, even tickets for next months!). Fyi, this musical is conducted annually, so, the main character (Billy) is always changed every year. I reckon the production house does a kind of audition to look for a boy aged from 10-12 to play Billy. Interesting fact is Tom Holand (the new Spiderman) was playing Billy a few years ago! Yeah, it is like a starting point for boys who want to be an actor in the future. But, it is only presented in some cities in the UK. That might be why the tickets were sold out so fast, as people from another West Midlands cities would choose Birmingham.
After finishing the lab work last night, we took the train to the city center and grabbed some fries before getting to the Hippodrome (this is where they do the musical the most in Brum). When we entered the building, we both looked like an alien (I bet we're the only Asian there, plus the only ones who wear hijab), so we got some weird stares. But, that's fine because Billy was all we wanted! And, know what? Even though we had watched the musical in DVD, it was like we did it the first time last night. I literally had my jaw dropped. They're super duper incredible! Oh right, because they show this annually, they will do something new every year. So, it was more than the DVD. Much more!
I didn't even realise when the first part of 1.5 hours had passed. I was really amazed. One thing about story telling in the UK (through TV serial drama, theatre, novel) is that it is not the plot that is very special in my humble opinion, it is how the writer and producer telling us the story through beatiful words in the narrations and dialogues and if in musical act, the song lyric (well yes if you are a melancholic-phlegmatic of course words can burn you or melt you down, they can do everything to mess up your brain and soul).
And now, I can't stop playing the songs in my head! I really love them!
But I have one more thing to say. If any of you guys are planning to continue study abroad, I suggest you to visit places and learn from them. If you only wanted to get pictures in front of all those attractions, well that will do. But, the only thing you get is a picture for instagram, no more than that. And what will it give you? Hundreds or even thousands likes of course. But, will that help you sharpen and enlighten your mind? I am not quite sure. So, by visiting places I mean learn. Take everything positive. Well, of course studying abroad means you have to be great in the academic pursuit, no excuse for that. But that's not the only thing that is important. We may be an expert in nanotech for example, but we can do that in Indonesia too, I mean some Indonesian institutes are recognised worldwide for their research in that field as well. But, we got to learn. Look, especially for those who are studying in the Europe, has it ever crossed your mind on how they become powerful countries in the world? What is so different about them and us in Indonesia? Why is it? Why? What? How? There are lot of questions needing answers. So, visit places not only for pictures but also answers to inspire your mind (I will try to make a writing about what I've learned so far). Cheer-io! :)
With love, Rifka (the one who only know to express this kind of thing in words, not videos)
