Cryptids & Creatures of Folklore Drawtober Day 19 — Mantis Man

The Mantis Man is a creature reported around the Musconetcong River in Hackettstown, New Jersey. Two witnesses reported encountering the Mantis Man on separate occasions while fishing in the river. Another saw it in the river while they were crossing a bridge. Other sightings continue to pop up from time to time. They all claimed that it was around 7 to 9 ft tall and, as its name would suggest, it had the appearance of a human-like praying mantis. 

One of the witnesses who encountered the creature while they were fishing claimed that it seemed surprised they could see it and it quickly vanished before their eyes. The witness was extremely unsettled by the encounter and claimed they felt like the creature had been stalking them.

I feel like Tumblr would appreciate my ocs Lainey (she/her) and Everett (they/them) better than Instagram or TikTok. They're best friends and queer cryptid hunting podcasters/YouTubers. Everett's shirts are hand made by them and I draw a different one every time. This is my most recent version of the characters design. They're for a webtoon I may never make. If you want to feel their dynamic it's basically Shane and Ryan but neither are skeptics and one thinks they can seduce bigfoot if given the chance.

Day 10: Mantis Man

(Cryptidmaster? Well someone has to give all these guys sapience and language skills. Short description because I have to go soon) Oh? You want to know about the Cryptidmaster? I mean I can’t really tell you a lot. But I can tell you what I do know. It started when I woke up for the first time. I was next to a river but I didn’t really feel like going into the water. That was all I had back then, feelings. I was basically a newborn animal out there. Wandering around the forest occasionally eating any insect I could catch. All I really could do was wander. Then he found me. I was sleeping below a tree when I saw this burst of light. He looked like a human, although I didn’t know what those were at the time. He had long flowing robes and a big hat. But the main thing I noticed was the giant book he carried in his hands. He waved one of them in front of me and that’s when I started to think for the first time. I had words in my head and I could understand them! That was when he started talking to me. He told me that I could permanently gain the ability of language if he could let me record my existence in his book. Don’t worry, I did ask why. He said that he felt an urge to collect and chronicle the existence of every cryptid that is born for some strange reason unknown to even himself. The gift of language was his idea of a generous offer. He did mention his deals weren’t usually that generous, whatever that means. Of course I accepted, I would be crazy if I didn’t. That’s when I was spotted for the first time. I don’t know how but when I was by the river that day, I could feel something boring in the back of my head. Like I was being watched. I asked the Cryptidmaster and he said that that is how I stay alive, by being watched and observed and believed in. It felt weird and wrong so I asked him if there were any other options. He told me to move down here into hell. He guided me through becoming a resident down here and even managed to find the demon that accidentally led to my creation. His name is Bosque, he’s an ok guy. I haven’t met with the Cryptidmaster since. Before he left though, he did tell me that if I ever needed him again, I could call him through my mind. I’ve never tried it myself but the other cryptids I’ve met have said it does work. I guess that would be the end of my experiences with him. I and everyone else owe a lot to him.
