Polar Nights: Cast into Darkness - thoughts and author input
Now that I’ve read all of “Polar Nights,” I wanted to make my big thought dump post where I express everything I have to say about the book! But rather than read just my thoughts, author @marimancusi was nice enough to answer questions I had, so I added her input to some of the topics as well.
As I was writing, I felt a structured review wasn’t the way to go, so I simply bullet pointed each of my main thoughts/observations (along with Mari’s answers if applicable) broken down into three categories. I also reference page numbers a few times, but keep in mind that these are the page numbers from the English Amazon Kindle version; the numbers are different in the audio and hardcover versions, as well as non-English versions. Anyway, this post is long enough already, so let’s get to it!
SPOILER WARNING!
---
Established post-Frozen 2 status quo
-The book establishes that Anna and Elsa see each other regularly, even weekly for family game nights (pg.7). I believe this is the first time any official media has explicitly stated how frequent their visits are post-F2. While the storybooks and comics thus far have only made vague implications about the frequency of their visits, in sometimes contradicting ways, for example, the “Anna sans Elsa” book gives the impression that they don’t see each other much, while the epilogue of the Frozen 2 manga says they see each other “often,” “Polar Nights” is the first to use a specific time interval, “weekly,” as well as implying other visits, like the polar nights festival. Of course, everyone is free to decide what books they want to consider canon, but I don’t know why anyone would consider “Anna sans Elsa” more canon than “Polar Nights,” a book that had to get approval by the studio (according to Mari). After two and a half years, it’s nice to finally have some kind of official confirmation that the sisters do see each other regularly even with their new roles, which is something I always suspected anyway
-However, when it comes to what exactly Elsa is doing everyday as the fifth spirit, while “Polar Nights” does give some new descriptions, it’s nothing significant. The impression I got is that Elsa is still learning - she’s learning from the Northuldra about the spirits and studying all the memories in Ahtohallan (pg.52-53). I always figured this is part of what she’s doing, but my main headcanon on this topic that I describe in my fanfic novel is that Anna and Elsa (along with Olaf and Kristoff) are working together to get the Northuldra and Arendellians to like each other again, and Elsa is also helping the spirits reconnect with the Northuldra. In a way, this could still be the case later on: “Polar Nights” does take place only two months after the events of Frozen 2, and the Northuldra are away for the time being. When they return is when they could start to mend the bond between them and Arendelle and the spirits. But I can definitely understand why the authors weren’t allowed to expand too much on fifth spirit lore and Northuldra/Arendelle relationships - it’s obvious that they didn’t have the authority to do anything in “Polar Nights” that would alter whatever status quo was established at the end of Frozen 2. Whenever Frozen 3 happens, it should be able to seamlessly come after Frozen 2, without contradicting anything in “Polar Nights.” Disney has always been pretty restrictive when it comes to Frozen’s depiction in off-shoot media like this, but I think Jen and Mari went as far as they were allowed to with expanding the story post-F2, and I’m grateful for that
-Similarly after Frozen 2 came out, it was also up for debate whether Elsa is still a queen or not. Several times in official Frozen 2 media she’s been called the Snow Queen, and “Polar Nights” reinforces her status as queen even more, with several characters still calling her Queen Elsa (pg.40,134). I was happy that this goes along with my headcanon that everyone still considers her a co-queen of Arendelle. I also liked the fact that Elsa acknowledges that being queen of Arendelle is a full-time job (pg.7) hence why it made sense for Anna to take the role if she was going to spend a lot of time in the Enchanted Forest (this is actually something I also mentioned in my Seek the Truth analysis book!)
-Another hot post-Frozen 2 topic is whether Ahtohallan is Elsa’s new “home” - as in, she spends most of her time there, sleeps there, etc,. While the book doesn't state how often Elsa stays in Ahtohallan and whether it’s her place of actual dwelling, there’s a few passages that touch on the subject of “home” - in one, she considers Arendelle her second home when not in the Enchanted Forest (pg.7); in another, it’s Ahtohallan she considers a second home, or more like a place of peace (pg.81); and in another, she explicitly says that Arendelle will always be a home to her (pg120). So with all this in mind, I think it’s safe to say that Elsa has two homes!
-I’m sure I’m not the only one who was hoping to see more of the Northuldra and Elsa’s relationship with them in “Polar Nights.” Out of all the post-Frozen 2 storybooks and comics that have been released over the past few years, not a single one even mentions them. This book would have been a great opportunity to finally confirm that Disney didn’t decide to write Yelena, Honeymaren, and Ryder out of the franchise for whatever reason, especially after the Northuldra were such an important part of the prequel novel “Dangerous Secrets”. But unfortunately, while they were mentioned by name in “Polar Nights” (which is more recognition than they’ve ever gotten outside the movie itself), they spent the entire book off on a journey and never made an appearance. Even though I was a tad disappointed about this, I can understand why they were left out for the sake of narrative flow. The focus of the story is Anna and Elsa traveling around trying to solve the mystery of the draugr, with all of the other characters taking minor roles and serving as means to enhance the urgency of the conflict with their amnesia. Adding three more characters to the mix, especially if those characters resided away from Arendelle, would have probably convoluted the plot more than helped. Still, I do wonder if Mari and Jen originally wanted the Northuldra to make an actual appearance and Disney rejected that idea, or they always intended to leave them out from the start. Whatever it was, at least the Northuldra's reason for being away from the forest made a lot of sense - it’s definitely understandable that they’d want to make a journey after being trapped in the forest for so long, and their absence is only temporary (pg.8-9). I asked Mari about this and she said she’d try to find out from her editor. If she gets back to me with anything significant, I’ll update this post!
-Like the frequency of the sisters’ visits, another topic heavily debated about the end of Frozen 2 was whether Elsa actually became a “spirit,” with some interpreting it as her now being immortal, or no longer human in some way. Once again, all other previous post-F2 content has not addressed this one way or the other. But with “Polar Nights” having way more descriptive passages about Elsa’s thoughts, feelings, and actions post-F2, there’s no indication that she’s any different in a physiological way than she was prior to the end of Frozen 2 - she still eats, sleeps, and exhibits self-preservation that any mortal person would, i.e., she almost drowned in a non-magical river (pg.145)
---
A few possible errors/criticisms
-Some fans (I believe you were one of them @annaofthenorthernlights) have mentioned a continuity error with Kristoff saying that it’s his and Anna’s sixth “choco-versary” (pg.10). People are interpreting it as being something the couple has been doing for six years now, which isn’t possible since they’ve only known each other for three years. But I thought it was simply the sixth time they ate chocolate together in some kind of special way, since the word “year” wasn’t specifically mentioned. But then again, I feel like they would have eaten chocolate together many more times than that by now, and an anniversary is usually an annual event, but maybe not always...still I’m not sure about this one. I once again asked Mari and she couldn’t recall the reasoning behind the choco-versary date. So we’ll just have to say that it’s not necessarily an annual event
-Some timeline confusion not exclusive to “Polar Nights” is the name of Anna’s horse. In the novel “A Frozen Heart” (a retelling of the first movie from Anna and Hans’ perspectives) her horse is named Kjekk. However, in “Forest of Shadows” released a few years later, his name is changed to Havski. Then in “Dangerous Secrets,” the horse Iduna gets from the farmer is named Havski, however she calls him Kjekk a few lines later (pg.267 of the “Dangerous Secrets” hardcover). And now in “Polar Nights,” his name is Havski again (thanks to fellow fan ImWaitingForWinter for helping me figure this out!) I asked Mari about this and she said that they were told the horse’s name is Havski. So all I can conclude from this is that someone in the approval department for “Forest of Shadows” goofed and didn’t know that the horse was already given the name Kjekk...though that wouldn’t explain why the name is brought up again in “Dangerous Secrets.” I can understand those "blink and you miss it errors" that most of the books have, but this one is more severe to me since the horses' name are mentioned several times in the novels. I’ll just have to use my headcanons for this one and say that Iduna’s horse was originally named Havski, but she liked the name Kjekk better. Anna inherited Kjekk, who’s the horse she rides in the first movie. However, sometime between then and “Forest of Shadows,” either Kjekk died and she got a new horse, or she got a new horse anyway and can choose to ride either of them. Somehow she had found out that Kjekk’s original name was Havski, she liked the name, and so gave it to her new horse. There, fixed this error I guess, where’s my money, Disney?
-Kind of a shame we didn’t get to see any of Elsa’s birthday festivities, but I understand it would have made the epilogue drag on much longer
-At one point in the book it says that Kristoff has blue eyes (pg.12). I actually never pay much attention to characters’ eye colors, but apparently he’s supposed to have brown eyes. I did bring this up to Mari and she said they could possibly fix minor mistakes like this in future prints. We’ll see
-One minor thing I didn’t like is the fact that none of the spirits were given genders, especially Bruni. I point out Bruni specifically because he was given a gender in a book released a couple years’ back called “Bruni’s Big Adventure.” And I know that one of the animators mentioned in a Q&A event I attended a while back that Gale is female, though that could have just been his own personal headcanon that wasn’t officially acknowledged by anyone else. Mari was again gracious enough to answer this question: she said that they were instructed that the spirits should be gender natural, except for the mother spirit Ahtohallan, which should be female (so I guess in this case, the approvers for “Bruni’s Big Adventure” are the ones who goofed!) I suppose it makes sense that spirits wouldn’t have genders, but when they’re given names and personalities like Bruni and Gale, is seems dehumanizing to call them “it” all the time. Also saying “the Water Nokk” over and over is a tad long - the fans have always gone with just “Nokk.” Disney really should have let Mari give him a name! (something she brought up during the Zoom event)
-Another minor thing I have to point out that I didn’t like was the reason given for why Elsa couldn’t take Anna to Ahtohallan to see the memories - that the Dark Sea could only be crossed by riding the Nokk, and the spirit “had a mind of its own” (pg.81). This is a bit contradicting as it seems like the Dark Sea has frozen over in the epilogue of Frozen 2, and Elsa is seen riding Nokk to Ahtohallan without any raging sea to contend with. But even if the Dark Sea was still raging, it kinda makes Nokk seem like a jerk for not letting Anna ride him even if Elsa asks him, especially considering the fact that Nokk was wiling to help the pirates get back to Arendelle (pg170). Personally I much prefer my headcanon for why Anna can’t go to Ahtohallan: the depths of the glacier where the memories reside is simply too cold for a normal human to survive even if they were wearing the warmest of clothes. But at least the story confirms my other headcanon that Elsa tries to bring memories from Ahtohallan to Anna to compensate
---
What I enjoyed/other observations
-I loved the fact that there were so many callbacks and reoccurring characters from other Frozen media in “Polar Nights” - references to “Dangerous Secrets,” “Forest of Shadows”, “Journey to the Northern Lights,” and the Breaking Boundaries comics to name a few. I especially liked having more background on Queen Rita and portraying her as a good person in contrast to her ex-husband
-I thought Mari and Jen did a great job portraying Anna and Elsa in “Polar Nights.” There were a few instances where I disagreed on some word and action choices, but I’d say at least 90% of it felt genuine. Unlike “Dangerous Secrets” which features side characters that were never explored much in the movies, “Polar Nights” had way more hype to live up to, being the first novel to really delve into the post-Frozen 2 world through the eyes of the two main characters. But as far as the sisters are portrayed, I think the authors did well by them
-I also like how Ahtohallan and Elsa’s relationship with its memories were conveyed in the book. I like the fact that she can use memories outside of the glacier, or even conjure memories in places where they didn’t occur as long as she has the memories within her, like how she was going to show Anna the little anecdote with their parents (pg.25). However, the description of the memories in “Polar Nights” gave me the impression that they’re being shown in full color/detail, while in the movie all the memories are shown to be nothing more than animated white/blueish snow sculptures. But maybe I’m just misinterpreting
-Troll magic is still kind of vague in this story, but it seems like they can remove memories but not restore them, hence why they can’t restore Anna’s memories or the memories taken by the draugr (pg.109-110)
-I actually mention draugr in my fanfic novel (though spelled “draug” since there’s different ways of spelling it in English). So it was a pleasant surprise that Disney agrees that they exist in the Frozen-verse! Mari and Jen explained in the Zoom event that Disney presented them with the premise of the two princesses, one of which dies and becomes a draugr, and they worked with the story from there
-I’m not sure I could have forgiven Stig so easily. I know he was a victim too, and it’s easy to say you’d do the right thing when you’re not the person being threatened like he was, but I dunno. It’s not like he had a family to protect who would have suffered if he crossed Runeard...it was just himself he was looking out for. I feel like he could have reached out for help, like maybe got word to Vesterland about what had actually happened. And was he even at the unveiling of Inger and Sissel’s new memorial?
-I was lowkey hoping for more ice-bros moments between Elsa and Kristoff, but I can see that there wasn’t many opportunities for that since Anna and Elsa were the main focus of the story while Kristoff and Olaf took on minor roles. I did like the fact that Elsa’s grown to love him like a brother (pg.121) and thinks he and Anna are the perfect match. And I adored the part where she says she wants to be the literal “cool aunt” when they have kids (pg.11)
-Arendelle keeps castle cats! (pg.122) Why have we not seen more of Sassy and other kitties in past Frozen media? The cat lover in me says this better be a trend that starts NOW!
-I know Olaf can be a difficult character to write for in a more serious Frozen story like this (maybe that’s why the author of “Forest of Shadows” practically wrote him out of that book!) but again, I thought Mari and Jen did a good job with him. I loved the running gag of him pretending to be king of Arendelle when everyone lost their memories
-I’m not sure if Jen and Mari took turns writing their respective chapters, but I didn't notice any difference in writing style - the chapters flowed seamlessly, I certainly didn't get any inclination that two different people wrote this book!
-The plot overall as far as the mystery behind the Vesterland princesses and the eventual resolution of the conflict was really good. It was suspenseful, dramatic, touching, and kept my interest all the way through
---
In summary, I think “Polar Nights” is a fantastic addition to the Frozen library. Despite a few criticisms and continuity errors (which happens with most Frozen media honestly), it was a very enjoyable story and it was great to finally have an official, truly fleshed out post-Frozen 2 adventure. You’ll be disappointed if you were expecting some big, Frozen 3-like story that would end with major changes from what was established at the end of Frozen 2. This was meant to be a small scale side-story to give us an idea of the kinds of things the characters are doing in the current status quo (in the Zoom event, Mari specifically said it's like a "monster of the week" story). It’s what I was expecting and I’m actually happy we didn’t get some epic story that redefined the franchise - this makes me hopeful that Disney doesn’t want to continue the Frozen saga strictly through niche media like books and will eventually give us the real story continuation in a potential Frozen 3 or other animation project. Whenever that project may be, since “Polar Nights” is a small scale story, it could fit nicely between Frozen 2 and the new project without any continuity conflicts (it could be another Frozen 2.5, just like my fic!) Despite what many fans thought when Frozen 2 came out, I always believed the ending did not mean Anna and Elsa couldn’t keep having exciting, sisterly adventures together, and now we have solid proof of that in “Polar Nights!”

Scenes in Frozen-verse that will never be the same again because of Dangerous Secrets
This is my second mega post on Dangerous Secrets. The first was on all the in-universe references, and this one focuses on scenes within Frozen-verse that now have a new meaning because of DS. These posts are 100% original.
Again, spoiler alert!
1. Kai, Olinda and Gerda are old!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You knew that they had been there since Elsa and Anna were kids, but did you know they were also there since Agnarr was 14?! The following excerpts are all from the time that he was 14.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since Agnarr is about 21 when Elsa is born, that means the castle staff have been there for more than 31 years at the time of F2! [(21-14) + 24)]
2. “Conceal, don’t feel” didn’t start with Elsa =(
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s Lord Peterssen speaking to Agnarr. In fact, he goes on to say that King Runeard did it too in his time. This is so sad...part of the tragedy of Agnarr and Iduna.
3. Anna/Agnarr and Mattias
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mattias is so fatherly, he was a father to both Agnarr and later, Anna. And Mattias’ father’s wise words, “Do the next right thing”, were passed down to both Agnarr and Anna!
Tumblr media
Although Anna didn’t know it, she really takes after her father! She promoted Mattias to General, and she gave Mattias news about Halima (that Halima’s still unmarried)
Tumblr media
4. This is the MAKE-OUT tree!!!
Tumblr media
Ok, there’s no avoiding it, Agnarr and Iduna MADE OUT A LOT!!!!! In the tree, in the secret room, behind other trees and bushes...Elsa and Anna still do not know till this day the hot kisses that took place in these locations!!!
Tumblr media
5. Ariel (The Little Mermaid) “stopped” their first kiss!!
Tumblr media
That’s the “some new Danish author” that Agnarr was reading - the Little Mermaid! You can see Ariel on the front cover.
Iduna and Agnarr were lost in their PASSIONATE kiss inside the Secret Room...until...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No underaged kissing!!
(hey Ariel, you were sixteen too...) JOKE lol
Ariel was also “responsible” for them finding the Secret Room in the first place!
6. Iduna’s Windmills
Tumblr media
The windmill(s) in Arendelle exist because of Iduna’s research and experimentation (credit also to Johan) and maybe a little help from Gale? =)
Tumblr media
7. Iduna and Agnarr stopped at Oaken’s!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also - did you realise that Iduna and Agnarr were in the sauna together? STEAMY!!
8. This was not the first time Iduna and Agnarr met Pabbie
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Iduna and Agnarr met Pabbie years earlier. It is revealed that Pabbie knew from the Northern Lights that one day, the King and Queen would come to him to save their daughter’s life. To me, this actually creates a “Sleeping Beauty” scenario because they knew in advance that their daughter (at least, one of them) is “cursed” in some way.
9. Sir Jorgenbjorgen belonged to Agnarr!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the text below, “she” refers to little Elsa.
Tumblr media
10. Anna’s horse, Kjekk, was Iduna’s!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
11. Iduna was the first to say Elsa is a gift, not a curse
Tumblr media
Anna really takes after Iduna too!
Tumblr media
12. These 2 scenes took place in the Secret Room!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Never knew that we’ve seen the secret room right from the prologue of F1 way back in 2013! Of course, there’s not much to see in this shot.
Tumblr media
“I need to tell you about my past” - this scene took place in the secret room. (not providing the text from the book as it’s too long and spread out over multiple paragraphs) Also, DS clarified that this took place a few weeks before the voyage. My previous headcanon was that this happened on the very same night as Anna’s accident (AKA both prologues) but it’s not.
Thank you @marimancusi !

NO "Polar Nights" for me, says Amazon!
Supposedly I returned it yesterday, although the delivery date of the book, pre-ordered for months!, was only announced for today by email a few days ago. I wasn't even at home yesterday! I'm so pissed at Amazon and will never buy anything from them again, neither from Bookdepository, because they were bought by Amazon in 2011! Everywhere else the book has 3 weeks or more delivery time. Every Frozen fan can read it already, except me! And when i’m ready to discuss the book after i read it in one or two months no one of the Frozen fans cares anymore. Then maybe i also could wait until next year, when i can get it in a near local bookstore. If I order it online again somewhere else, I'm sure I'll be disappointed again. It’s just so sad after waiting for so many months!!!

Hello, Goodbye Dolly
In Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, audiences were briefly introduced to Sir JorgenBjorgen, a stuffed knitted puffin doll that was a toy Elsa owned in her childhood and kept as her companion during the years she and Anna were kept apart. Then when Elsa grew up, Sir JorgenBjorgen was stored away in her trunk, which was later placed in the attic.
When the prequel novel Dangerous Secrets was released in November 2020, it was revealed that Sir JorgenBjorgen had been around a lot longer than fans had thought. Over 40 years earlier, the doll was created by Queen Rita as a toy for her baby son, Prince Agnarr. Sir JorgenBjorgen was Agnarr’s favorite toy and always brought a smile to his face. When Rita fled the kingdom after having her memories wiped by Pabbie, Runeard locked up all of her belongings and anything that reminded him of her. However, he did not know about Sir JorgenBjorgen, and Gerda secretly saved it and hid it from him, waiting for the chance to return it to Agnarr one day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ever since I read Dangerous Secrets and learned that this doll originally came from Rita and belonged to Agnarr, I got to thinking about what Runeard would have done with it had he known about it. Firstly, if he discovered Sir JorgenBjorgen when Agnarr played with it as a child, and with this, I mean before Rita left, I have a strong hunch would have disapproved of the doll, and enough so that he would have taken it away from Agnarr.
Why? Because I get the impression that Runeard would have thought that dolls, regardless of dolls being depicted as male or female, were only for girls, not boys. Therefore, I think he would have been outraged by the idea of his own son playing with a doll. Heck, Runeard probably also would have thought that boys who do or once did play with dolls are weak and inept, and thus are not or never would be real men. If he had truly hoped to mold Agnarr into the same cold, ruthless man/king he was, then I have no doubt Runeard would have seen Agnarr as weak for owning and playing with a doll, and taken Sir JorgenBjorgen away from him.
But there’s more to it than just that; as mentioned by a line in the prologue of the Frozen II novelization and an almost verbatim line quote by Agnarr in Dangerous Secrets, during the gathering in the Enchanted Forest, Agnarr knows that his father wanted him to act like a royal figure instead of a boy. In other words, even though Agnarr was 14 and still legally a child, Runeard only saw his son as a prince rather than as a person, and always wanted him to act royally only. He did not want him to act or behave like a normal person, meaning he never wanted Agnarr to act like a non-monarch, and thus, like a child, ever.
Therefore, Runeard additionally wouldn’t have wanted Agnarr to have Sir JorgenBjorgen because he would think that owning a doll is childish and Agnarr was not supposed to behave like a child even when he was one.
However, if Runeard discovered Sir JorgenBjorgen after Rita left, I don't think he would have simply hid it away with everything else; I think he would have burned it or permanently disposed of it through some other means.
Now why do I think Runeard would go such an extreme measure, you may ask? Because it would have been a guaranteed way for him to completely deny Agnarr any memories of Rita and sever anything that tied him to her. Agnarr had said that after his mother disappeared, his father constantly scolded and shouted at him for crying and being sad about her absence. This shows that Runeard had a total lack of sympathy for his son’s sadness (just as he did for Rita when she became so depressed over missing her home) and a ruthless determination, if not obsession, to get Agnarr to completely forget about Rita.
I feel it's one thing for Runeard to have locked away all the things that belonged to or reminded him of Rita so he could forget about her himself, and another for him to immediately banish anyone who spoke her name so that his people would attempt to forget her, too. But if he discovered anything that linked her to their son? Again, based on how he coldly chastised Agnarr for wallowing in sadness over Rita when she was gone, it is crystal clear to me that Runeard wanted Agnarr to forget her, too. Therefore, he would have had Sir JorgenBjorgen destroyed just so that Agnarr would have absolutely nothing left of her.
But luckily, Runeard never knew about Sir JorgenBjorgen, and Gerda successfully hid it from him before returning it to Agnarr when he was an adult.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then years later, Agnarr gave the doll to Elsa to keep her company during her separation from Anna.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While we have yet to know what Rita was like, what she looked like, or what became of her when she fled the kingdom, at least we know there is still a keepsake and reminder of her in Arendelle Castle. And even though Elsa is no longer the queen of Arendelle, I am hoping that Sir JorgenBjorgen will become a childhood toy for one or more Anna’s children and any other future descendants of the former queen of Arendelle.
While Runeard won’t be fondly remembered by his family due to the revelation of his betrayal to the Northuldra, what little they know about Rita will be forever cherished through Sir JorgenBjorgen. 😄😉

HAPPY 1st ANNIVERSARY of Dangerous Secrets!
Remember how it began, back then on Aug 06/2020, with the first announcement of “Dangerous Secrets”. And remember when Mari Mancusi joined us here on Tumblr with her first post to her new book.
The following months have been really exciting with her “Teaser Tuesday“ and the “Win it Wednesday” for us, or the “Frozen Fridays”, She kept us informed about everything around this wonderful book and gave us the chance to chat with her or for a live reading event. She even was in close contact with all Agduna fans, here and on the Agduna Discord server. She even gave us an additional story “A Perfect Night”.
So, thank you so much @marimancusi for being with us fans all this time and for the personal contact with so many from us. And this is still true today. I don't know any author who is so close to his fans, is so friendly to us all the time and makes so much effort for us fans on the social media platforms like Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, TikTok and some others. Thank you!
