Hi, thank you for this! So the lyrics have nothing to do with said representing, I chose most of the songs based on style and feeling, however a couple are associated with certain moots* for a specific reason (I didn't pick every song like that bc I felt it'd be too predictable.) I LOVE all these songs so much so my apologies if they're not your taste. I'd also like to encourage anyone who wasn't tagged to send me an ask if you'd like a song! living near and endless night / you'll always be the ghost in these halls i run from...

the voice behind him, the voice of the boy chasing him, cackled with insanity and immeasurable lust for blood... san couldn't get away.

he just fucking couldn't.

so san stopped. he skidded to a stop in the middle of the hallway and turned around, bristling himself. he closed his eyes tight and bowed his head, breathing heavily, ready for the feeling of the knife in seongjun's hand to pierce through his chest.

but when the pain never came, san looked up from the puddle of blood he was standing in. seongjun was standing there a few feet away, an uncertain grin on his face.

he was just...

standing there.

"just kill me already." san spat. "you've killed all my friends, the only people i care about. you've taken everything i love away from me, what more could you want? i have nothing else to give you! you know you want to, you disgusting, blood-starved little psycho."

"i..."

"what?"

"i can't, man..."

it took a moment for san to get over the initial shock of what the other boy had just said. but once the shock faded, san sighed heavily. a song came into his head- one that the crazy little monster in front of him had sang to himself so many times...

"you'll always be the ghost in these halls i run from..."

hold on to hope / take back your soul

wooyoung let loose a broken, tired sigh that unintentionally came out as a sort of half-whimper, half-groan.

"why, san..."

"i didn't mean for any of this to happen, joong, i mean it... seriously, i love you..." san whimpered, "you're my best friend, i love you..."

"if i was your best friend, then none of this would have happened."

san had unknowinglly hurt his best friend.

again.

wooyoung had come home to san crying in a ball on the couch, and being the soft-ass caring little shit he'd always been, wooyoung immediately went to comfort him. they'd sat in silence for a while, san with his head nuzzled into joong's chest, before joong got up the courage to ask what was wrong.

when san confessed to what he'd done, he hadn't planned out how he was going to deal with the backlash...

and now he had to dea with the extra consequences.

san wanted to move over to sit next to his friend, hold him close to his chest...

maybe forget any of this ever happened...?

but he could see that joong didn't want that right now.

so san had nothing else to do but work it out. he had to hold on to that little bit of hope, keep his eyes on what he had left...he had to fight for the man he loved. san had never known someone who was as loving, understanding, and caring as wooyoung, and he wasn't about to let go of him just because of a silly, stupid, idiotic mistake.

"woo... please..."

"san, what else do you want from me?? you've done this two times before, i... i just can't..."

"i can't do this anymore, san..."

so just look into the sky and you’ll become the blackbird...

san's heart skipped a beat as the lyric entered his head.

he could simply...

run away.

it wasn't as if his mother was abusing him or anything, but she wasn't exactly being very much of a mother, either. she hadn't been for just about the last three years now.

they'd never find him. san was a master of hide and seek, he'd gotten it from his childhood. his father had hated him with a passion, and frequently come after him in a blind rage over his own miserable life, up until his mother came home and caught him red-handed one day.

no one had dared fuck with choi san ever since.

san held onto hope, clung onto that one shining thought: he would be eighteen soon. in less than an hour.

the second he turned eighteen, he could join the ravens and soar away in the currents of the wind.

when that split moment came, san all but ran from the house, a maniacal grin smearing his handsome, chiseled features during every second. he'd packed away everything he'd need days before, his possessions were already with mingi and jongho. san's mother had just walked in the door when san woke up; she seemed to know exactly why he was so excited...

she didn't even say goodbye.

but it wasn't like san cared.

san stood in the gravel driveway of his house, the brightest smile on his face that had ever been. he thought gleefully of maybe taking a last look at the place he'd been forced before to call his home, but his face wouldn't move toward the wreck of a house that was no longer his home.

it still wasn't like san cared.

san looked happily into the bright, blue sky and willed his invisible wings to come out of hiding. he let them fly open and grinned once more, the smile on his face and the freedom still shining in his dark, warm, chocolate-brown eyes as he spread his wings, shifting into a blackbird and soaring away into the golden morning twilight.

Etienne’s Top Fives of 2022: Kpop Edition - Boy Groups

We’re on to Boy Groups as I continue down my list from the roundup post. This has in some ways been the hardest category to narrow down, specifically the order of 2nd-4th and who got the 5th spot (there’s a reason I’ve got 2 honorable mentions).

If a boy group has had subunits or members doing things solo, I consider that part of the group’s body of work for the year as long as they’ve also done some full group stuff. If only a subunit has been active, they’d probably get considered a boy group for the sake of this, and if only solos have been active, then they’d go in with solos.

The list with representative MVs is under the cut!

There were so many boy groups that did at least something that I enjoyed this year, including some that I hadn’t enjoyed anything from up until now. I think that part of the reason decisions this year were hard was that this was just an outstanding year for releases overall. Here’s a list of groups with songs that stood out for me this year in about the order that I heard them that didn’t make the list below: Up10tion (“Crazy About You” / "What If Love"), Onewe (“Universe” / "Montage" / "Still Here"), Drippin (“Villain” / “Zero” / “The One”), AB6IX (“1, 2, 3”), BtoB (“The Song”), Nu’est (“Again” disbandment song), Kingdom (“Ascension”), Ghost9 (“X-ray”), Just B (“Re=Load”), TXT (“Good Boy Gone Bad”), MCND (“W.A.I.1” < first time I’ve liked one of their songs), Vanner ("Rollin"), E’last (“Creature"), Omega X (“Play Dumb” < first song I’ve liked by them), TheBoyz (“Sweet” / “Timeless” / “Whisper”), Golden Child (“Replay”), Epex (“Hymn to Love”), P1harmony (“Doom Du Doom” < first song I’ve liked by them), and CIX (“458”).

Honorable Mention: Stray Kids

If you’d asked me a few months ago, Stray Kids probably would have been making my top 5 hands down. I saw them live and they were amazing! They did a lot that I liked early in the year musically. I... didn’t like Maxident and especially the MV for “Case 143″ at all though (there’s... one song I thought was OK on the album), and it probably impacted their place here. I still love them! They’re among my top groups, but I was reminded that their music is hit and miss for me. It is good going back and listening to “Maniac” and remembering that I do love a lot of their music. I really wish that Maxident hadn’t felt so rushed for me because it definitely dampened my appreciation of their overall body of work for the year. They are incredible live though! And I appreciate that I’ve gained friends both on here and in real life over them.

Ateez came into this year for me riding the high of “Turbulence” that is probably to date my favorite of their songs, and I had high expectations. Their music so far this year has been interesting, but noting has quite caught me the way some of last years releases did. They were in very tight contention for making it into the 5th place, thus why I have these honorable mentions. I am very interested to see where they take their music and storylines next, and “Halazia” (linked above) was probably my favorite thing that they did this calendar year, it’s definitely an interesting sound and it may honestly grow on me further with more listens.

5) Cravity

This has been a killer year for Cravity! I loved “Adrenaline” and enjoyed “Vivid” earlier in the year. They had a song all in English that I liked with “Boogie Woogie” (a rarity for me, often understanding lyrics impedes me ability to enjoy songs that I like auditorily). “Party Rock” (above) was definitely my favorite of their releases this year! It gets stuck in my head, it’s so catchy. I definitely replayed it a ton right after it came out too! Cravity has flirted with being on these lists since debut, but I think that the last time they made it on one was their rookie year (granted, they’ve not been around that long). I think that they’ve finally started to hit their stride, and I’m really hoping for more of them embracing this sound!

4) Oneus

I’ve liked them since debut to some extent, and I’d properly fallen for Oneus as a group with “Luna” last year, but “Same Scent” and the entire Malus album was kind of what tipped them over from a group that I loved to one of my top groups. I had Malus on repeat for weeks. They’ve had a rough go of the past few months (don’t really feel like talking about this, I do have opinions, but it’s not a conversation I’m interested in having at this time), but they’ve had amazing performances since then. And I thought that they couldn’t make “Same Scent” better than it already is, and then they just recently released the traditional version (https://youtu.be/pIVfLX8zW00 warning has flashing lights), and it somehow makes the song even better. I love how they use traditional instrumentation and sound in their songs somewhat regularly!

Biases: Seoho, Leedo, Hwanwoong (I am aware that’s over half the group, no I will not narrow it down)

3) OnlyOneOf

I’m breaking my own pattern a little bit by putting “ズルい女“ (their Japanese MV) as the representative song, but it was my favorite of their full group pieces this year, and I think that it shows their choreo and how they make music, even covers, their own really beautifully. The real thing that put’s OnlyOneOf this high on the list is their body of queer work with the member solos this year in the “be” / “undergrOund idOl” series. “skinz” was important to me conceptually, but it’s one of my least favorite OnlyOneOf songs, and I feel like “ズルい女“ is more interesting to me than “Suit Dance.” I like their songs as a body of work immensely in general though! They are exquisite storytellers in their MVs, and they have committed to telling compelling queer stories. They have incredible cinematic references throughout their MVs, and I just can’t praise their work enough as a whole! I have made so many posts about their storytelling and queer elements in their work, if you want to see more of my thoughts on them, just go digging through my OnlyOneOf tag.

2) Enhypen

It’s funny to me looking back that Enhypen didn’t make it onto these lists earlier. I was aware of them, and knew that I had some connections to them that made them appealing to me. (The one that I talk about more is that I watched Sunghoon and followed his career as a figure skater, I think that he actually made onto one of my figure skating lists when he was in juniors. There’s another one that’s more important, but that I don’t talk about as publicly.) I love the sound that Enhypen’s been living in recently, but they’ve overall had a sound that I’ve enjoyed from the start. I am very excited to see how they keep developing in the future! While I linked “Blessed-Cursed” above as my representative song for them (I’ve been going back to it consistently since it came out in January, it well deserves the spot), I want to also emphasize how much I loved “One In A Billion” (https://youtu.be/_ATqY9GFRh0) and “I Need the Light” (https://youtu.be/Pfq37N3eA7g) both of which are (at least kind of) OSTs.

1) Seventeen

Seventeen have been my favorite boy group since they debuted, and they show no signs of stopping that trend any time soon. I’ve loved their releases this year, among them another solo from Junhui with “Limbo” (https://youtu.be/k0sKWlEhVRk) which was a change from his usual emotional ballad fare, but let him show off his dancing and make an MV that was just incredibly gender. I also have a new favorite Seventeen song, dethroning “Home” in it’s long rein, with “Shadow.” I got to see them live this summer, and Redeim only partially managed to capture me losing my mind over them performing “Shadow” live. Their albums this year have been spectacular, and as always, I cannot wait to see what they decide to do next. I hope that I get to see them live many more times in the future (and if you get the chance to do it, they’re an experience).

I would love to chat about any of the groups on this list! I had such a hard time narrowing this down to 5 this year, and it probably would have been easier to do a top 10. There was so much good music this year!

favorite time of the year? : hmmm…. probably spring !! but more specifically toward the end as it’s usually like . the perfect temperature outside to sit outside and it isn’t too terribly rainy — that, and all the flowers & trees being bloomed/awake…. shows a new beginning for life that’s really just so lovely <3

comfort food? : my momma’s chili !! something about is just so <3 warm(outside the obvious jfbffj) <3 either that or fudge brownies <3 i learned how to make them quite a few years ago, so the process of making them also helps me feel better ^^

do you collect anything? : ahhh, i casually collect quite a lot of different things, but for the sake of simplicity … jdbfjf — i collect albums, bracelets/scrunchies/hair-ties, and flannels <3 spending money on myself isn’t like . really fun to me rn unless i really, really want something jfbjf — so i’m picky about what albums i wanna buy when i have the opportunity ! gotta really like the album / concepts for the album for me to really wanna spend the $25(or more) on them <3 so, i don’t really collect for specific members / albums. just having the album by itself is fun for me — will say it’s super cute to see others collect like . certain members & such ^^

favorite drink? : right now it’s sweet tea !! and lemonade — particularly strawberry lemonade <3

current favorite song? : hmmm…. because i’m me and can’t pick just one, i’ll share three which are: wat.1(mcnd), burning bridges(sigrid), and loved you(bae173) <3 [special mentions: bottom of the ocean(golcha), humph!(wsjn), & love you when you’re gone(daya)]

last series? : going to b real honest & say i don’t watch like … a whole lot of tv these days but . i got halfway(i think anyway) through the first part of the new of stranger things season (before the second part came out) & then just . didn’t really wanna watch it anymore for reasons / i just forgot 😵‍💫😵‍💫 ( i have been slowly watching / catching up on right! just THAT! on yt .. but i don’t think that counts djdbdbd )

last movie? : uhhhhh…. i think it was the new batman movie months upon months ago ?? though it could’ve also been the exorcist — a watch which i very much regret giving my time to as like . i actually hate that movie 💀 i get why it’s a classic but also… relied too much on shock factor + was also too slow-paced for me :< ( i don’t watch a whole lot of movies either .. in case you didn’t notice fjfbjfn )

sweet, savory, or spicy? : sweet !! i have a big sweet-tooth … not quite to a fault as i do try to keep myself in check here lately, but .. a lot of foods i often crave / want have a bit of sweetness to it(somewhere ….) .

current craving? : really, really craving some type of apple cinnamon / just cinnamon treat — like apple pie or a cinnamon roll <3 & i really miss my friends rn :( i haven’t seen them in person since like . the s..kz tix debacle :,)

thing you’re currently working on? : one/two of the other prompts for the vity gtkm thing !! and also editing ciiphrs teasers for blind <3
