Mystery Man

Written for Lin Beifong's Week (Day 3: Gossip at the RCPD)

‘Mind your business, keep your job’ was a rule Mako had followed devoutly since his days running numbers for the Triple Threats as a child. But even he had to admit he was curious. 

You see, on Monday morning, a courier delivered a bouquet of fire lilies to the station. The floral arrangement was walked right up to the chief’s office and remained on the side of her desk for the rest of the day.

This was truly significant because Chief Beifong’s office was markedly bare, devoid of the trinkets and family photos nearly all the cops left on their desks.

“Who do you think they’re from?” Meilin asked once she returned to the bullpen after submitting a report to the chief. 

“That’s above my paygrade,” Mako said, barely glancing up from his paperwork. “Yours too.”

“You’re probably right,” she replied, leaning against his desk. “It’s strange, though, to imagine the chief with a boyfriend.” 

On Tuesday, the flowers were gone, but when he went into Beifong’s office to get her approval to launch an investigation, the room smelled of expensive Fire Nation cigars. The scent was vaguely familiar, something from a lifetime ago. He felt his brow furrow as he tried to remember where he recognized it from. 

“Is there something else you need, Mako?” she asked when he paused before leaving her space. 

“Uh, no,” he said, scratching the back of his head. “I just didn’t know you smoked.” 

“It’s a habit that keeps coming back.” The chief’s expression twitched into something like a smile, but it was gone as soon as he blinked. “My advice is never start.” 

“I’ll keep that in mind,” he said, and then left, finally placing where he encountered the smell of those exact cigars when he sat down at his desk. It was back when he was learning to bend lightning on the rooftops and in the alleyways of the Dragon Flats.

On Wednesday, for the first time since Mako joined the force, Chief Beifong actually left work early. 

“I have an appointment,” she said with a noncommittal wave as she made her way out. “Hold down the fort.” 

“An appointment?” Meilin said, once the brass doors shut behind the chief. “More like a date.” 

“I haven’t seen her like this since she was a rookie,” said Old Patel, the unit chief of the organized crime division, who’d been a cop since Toph Beifong led the force. “Wearing perfume, going on lunch dates.” 

“Who has a lunch date?” Bolin asked as he and Opal approached. 

“No one,” Mako said. “Why are you here?”

“Rude!” Bolin said. “After Opal and I came all this way to pick you up for Asami’s kickback.” 

Mako sighed, rubbing his forehead. “That was today?” 

“Yeah, now who’s on a lunch date?” he asked, feeding off of the potential for gossip, as always. “Anyone I know?” 

“Chief Beifong and her mystery man,” Meilin said. 

“Lin’s dating?” Bolin asked. 

“We don’t know that,” Mako said. 

“He sent her flowers on Monday, cigars on Tuesday, and now she left early for a lunch date,” Meilin said, counting off each clue on a finger. 

“Ooh, this is getting good.” Bolin rubbed his hands together, grinning from ear to ear. “Hey, Opal, Lin’s your aunt. Did she say anything?” 

The airbender simply inspected her nails instead of responding. 

“Hey, no secrets!” Bolin said, pouting. 

“It’s not my business to tell,” she replied. 

Later that day, at Asami’s get together, Bolin made the whole friend group aware of Lin’s potential dating situation. 

“Come on, we have a detective, a genius, and an avatar in the house. Someone’s got to be able to figure this out.” 

“Trust me, you’ll never guess it,” Opal told him. “Not in a million years.” 

Something in her inflection returned Mako’s mind to the cigars—expensive, imported. He’d only ever known one person who smoked them.

“You think he makes her happy?” Mako asked. 

She smiled. “I definitely do.” 

“That’s good enough for me,” he said. “Now can we please stop talking about this and go eat?”

Turning Red Defense Post

It has come to my attention that some people think this blog is just me whining. I can see why those people think that, because it is true. I love to whine, and it is what I am good at. But there comes a time when one must venture out of her comfort zone. 

In this post I am praising Turning Red, a movie that I like very much but that many other people seem to hate. My reasons for this are threefold. For one, I am running out of movies to complain about; two, I really like Turning Red; and three, my professor said I can’t just bitch about movies anymore, so my classic complaining style posts are hence extinct. 

 Before I get into my praise for the film, I want to address the common criticisms I have seen people make of it. I perused the one-star reviews on Google, and the most common complaints seemed to be “it’s cringe-worthy," “the characters were annoying," and “it has inappropriate themes.”

 The reviews that said the movie was cringe-worthy mostly said so because of the main characters. The protagonist of the movie is a thirteen-year-old girl named Meilin Lee, whom many reviews had stated to be very annoying. I don’t know about anyone else, but when I was thirteen years old, I was absolutely insufferable. Cringe would be putting lightly how annoying I was. Comparably, I found Mei to be a sweet, if not dorky, tween with a similarly sympathetically dorky friend group. They were cringeworthy, but so is almost every thirteen-year-old out there, so really, the movie is just realistic. 

Many reviews also found Mei Lin’s mother to be overbearing and weird, which I found to be true as well, but then that was kind of the point. Her mother is not the villain of the story by any means, but she is a flawed character. One of the most touching moments of the movie came in the form of Mei Lin helping her mother overcome those flaws. If her mother had been perfect from the start, we would have missed out on that moment.

Aside from the characters, the negative reviews for this movie took offense to the “inappropriate” themes, namely the fact that periods were brought up and the fact that the protagonist rebels against her parents. The whole concept of Mei turning into a giant red panda is supposed to be a metaphor for puberty and growing up, and as it is such a huge part of puberty for girls, there was a quick mention of periods. This came in a very quick scene where Mei Lin’s mother brought out a stash of pads when she thought her daughter had gotten her period.

It was an extremely brief moment, but evidently, that was long enough to get some people upset. I was personally thrilled to see that periods were being brought up in a normal way, and I think it is a step in the right direction for this movie to have that scene. Some parents want to take the puberty talk at their own pace, but the mention of periods in this movie is brief and vague enough that most parents should be able to sweep it under the rug until they want to discuss it with their children. 

 As for Mei Lin rebelling against her parents, I am truthfully confused as to why this movie specifically is guilty of that message. Plenty of other Disney or Pixar movies have the main characters going against their parents. To name a few: The Little Mermaid, Brave, Mulan, and Pocahontas. I thought that Turning Red handled Mei Lin growing up and learning to be her own person very nicely, while still portraying her overbearing mother as sympathetic.

 I can see why a lot of people don’t like this movie. It was risky, and it certainly was not made to please everyone, but I think much of the hate this movie gets is undeserved. I, and many others, really enjoyed Turning Red. Despite the plethora of negative reviews I read, there were more five-star reviews than one-star reviews by a good amount. 

I do truly understand where the desire to loudly hate a movie comes from; I will crap on The Greatest Showman at any opportunity. But it is necessary to remember that the movies you hate may simply not have been written to please you. There are, for some reason, people out there who really like The Greatest Showman, despite the numerous reasons I have for reviling it. And there are people out there who hate Turning Red, even when I think it was one of the best Pixar movies made in some time.

Sydney Salts!! (she/her) She has a bajillion different haircuts, all done poorly in her bedroom late at night. I primarily draw angst of her because her story is very sad. She struggles feeling emotions for other people and it always hurts those around her, but she can't do anything about it. It's just apology after apology, empty room after empty room. But on her fun days she's super punk and all her clothes is made of hand me downs and trash!! Shes really into classical music and folk punk. She plays banjo, piano, synth, and guitar primarily. Sydney is SUPER FUCKING LOUD!!!! AND VERY IMPULSIVE. Notable things she has done

-gave herself an undercut with a man scaping tool

-tied her laces so tied her feet lost circulation for many hours

-chipped a young teen's tooth accidentally in the pit

-peed herself while playing hide n seek in an abandoned building cause she thought she saw a ghost

Also Sydney's power is super Hella OP. She can rearrange molecules of any connected object (including just like terrforming earth's crust if she connects to it) but it takes alot of strength and focus. Her family was cursed to be one with the earth, it started with them after a certain number of years of living they would start merging with the ground they stood on and become dirt but it's changed alot over the centuries. Sydney naturally couldn't focus her ability, but her mother worked as a power prosehtic designer and created brain plugs so she could directly connect with the objects she wants to manipulate.

Jun Kwak (he/she), Jun is my comfort oc and so I have not given her any life problems. She has it made. She's childhood friends with Meilin, since they both lived in a rich neighborhood. Since then Jun's family started having buisness problems and they moved to the ocean side to live a simpler life. Jun loves fishing, it's sweet and calm and let's him sit in peace. His plan is to build a tackle & bait store one day and spend the rest of his years on the beach. This isn't gonna work out cause plot but it's nice for now :) Jun is just a very chill and emotional but likes to goof on occasion.

Jun's family curse was to have an irresistible aroma. Jun though only produces a very subtle scent, which becomes more active in water. He mainly uses it to attract fish. The aroma he produces is affected by his health and mood so when really healthy or really during intense emotion it can affect people on land.

Mei Lin Qin (she/they) Mei Lin is very angry and very emotive. She grew up in a family who cared and loved eachother but did awful things to others. They stepped on the rest of the world to become more and more powerful. She wanted nothing to do with that so her family let her pursue her own career but blah blah plot stuff comes in. Mei Lin was super in love with Sydney but it wasn't healthy and they end up on polite acquaintance term for years. Eventually they grow and develop something of a QPR where they were both happy. Mei Lin is a gamer girl, but she only plays the most evil competitive FPS games. It fuels the menace inside her. Her and Julian have a strong friendship based on both being haters.

Her long ago ancestor was King Midas, which led her family to suffer but eventually prosper from the gold they could create. Since then the market has been overflown with gold so it's not longer so beloved. Still Meilin can produce gold as just excess on her body. Her nails are solid gold (she has a special procedure to cut it), she has natural gold in her hair, and she is very sparkly since she has gold in her pores (just trust me it works shh)

There are characters in Jun, Julian, Sydney And Mei lin's universe such as Alice (Sydney's ex and Julian's art bestie) and Aniel (a high fashion girl who took dance with Jun and Meilin as kids and they just keep running into) but I don't have much on them :P

This is Taylor (he/him) (black haired ghost loving incel) and Alec (any) (angry alien who acts like he knows human culture better than humans) they only exist in the non magic universe. Their whole thing is Taylor and Alec hate eachother through Cartoonishly shenanigans but fall in their own strange form of love. Taylor is really into ghost hunting and being inside all day on his pc setup. Alec is on earth for a personal vacation but is stranded cause he is very incompetent and also an asshole so nobody came after him. It's fun n goofy :] anytime I draw em I don't do them justice so there is little dooble.

Finally Julian Salts (he/him) , I put him last cause he's always the favorite on art fight, to my friends, and to myself. Hes angry and bitter about everything and guess what! It's your problem! Cause he's gonna bitch and moan!!! Hes super pretentious - nobody understands me - kind of artist and his perfered medium is clay sculpting. He acts all mad but he actually adores his sister (Sydney), boyfriend (Jun), and friends (Meilin and Alice) so much and that's what he usually scultps after. He only wears long skirts and sweaters with slight variation. He always has ram horns in the human and non human world. I feel like he'd look weird without them. No explanation it's just how it is. He also worked in customer service for like three months and blames that one why he's so grouchy but he was very much born this way.

His cursed family was just making them goats. Nobody knew his family was human before until the curse started dying out and the babies turned into human goat hybrids. His mom had a bad mutation and ended up dying soon after Julian's birth because of this. Julian is mostly human but he has hairy fricking legs and get scared like a sheep. His head is super tough too and his loved ones just throw shit at him because they know he can take it (he doesn't mind but acts like he does). His dad is totally human but also a dick so Julian is adopted by Sydney's family. He loves his life but will never admit it.

Okay, I know it's been a while, but I've been working on Li-mei's backstory, and here is the first part of it, so enjoy! P.s. don't know how many parts there's going to be in this, so yeah, bare with me on this one, guys...😅

Li-mei's backstory part one

Li-mei's parents were named, Wang Lei Lin and Meilin Lin. Her father is actually a stone monkey, like the monkey king, sun wukong. Who was taken in by a martial arts master, Chih-Cheng Lin, who came from a long line of martial arts masters and ran the family dojo. Chih-Cheng adopted Wang Lei when he was just a cub, taught him all things martial arts, and even taught him to use his powers to help others. Meilin was raised in a humble home with loving parents, unlike Wang Lei, Meilin was human. She met Wang Lei by chance in their early adult hood. Like any other, they fell in love and decided to marry. A year later, they had their first child, Feng Lin. He was born a monkey, and like any child, he was a very bright boy and was gifted with the ability to manipulate nature to his will. Soon, he was also taught martial arts and was training in the dojo. 7 years later, Meilin was expecting their second child, Wang Lei, and Meilin were over joyed and even happier when they found out it would be a girl, but there were complications during the pregnancy Meilin would constantly get sick and end up at the hospital, by the last few months of her pregnancy, the doctor told Wang Lei that Meilin was severely ill and that there is a chance that she and the baby might die. Meilin was determined to let their child live, even if it meant for her to die for her child. Then, the day to give birth came snd Li-mei was born, but sadly, due to complications and being ill, Meilin was dying, and there wasn't much that the doctors could do. Before Meilin died, she held Li-mei in her arms, and her final words to Li-mei were, "I love you, my little starlight..." Broken hearted by their lost, Wang Lei, Feng and Chih-Cheng loved and adored Li-mei to no ends. They all did their best to raise Li-mei and even taught her martial arts as well. Li-mei was a very fast learner and had the ability to heal all wounds and ailments, but it does take its toll on her physically, the greater the wounds and ailments, the more it affects her.

Breakdown of Linzin's Kids in the "You Are My Life" AU

For any readers who keep up with my Linzin AU called "You Are My Life" and my new storyline for this particular universe, "Choices, Chances, Changes," I always thought that sometimes it can get confusing to keep up with Linzin OC kids.

And mine is no exception. So I finally took the time to break down my OC linzin kids to make easier for the readers to keep up with their names/bending/personalities. In order from oldest to youngest:

Meilin Beifong

Looks almost exactly like Lin, except with grey eyes

Earthbender/metalbender - according to Toph, she's going to be her successor

Talented in the performing arts (particularly music and dance). She's a singer, dancer, and performer. Dance and music has been her passion from a very young age, and Linzin encouraged this talent because they saw that this was a path she wanted to pave for herself. Bends a variety of her metal costumes on-stage as part of her act

Personality - think current Lady Gaga vibes. She's sensual, elegant, badass, brutally honest, yet speaks kindly about others and to them. Has high expectations of herself and especially in her craft, constantly trying to improve as a singer/dancer. As the oldest sibling, she is extremely protective of her family and that might be a trait she inherited from Lin. Due to a particular incident (this will be referenced in a future chapter of "Choices, Chances, Changes") it was the catalyst that made her the strong and beautifully minded woman she is now.

Flaw is that she expects everyone to work as diligently as she does. Clashes with Lin because they have the a lot of the same habits and outspoken nature with each other. She's also extremely particular about the types of friends she has bc she's unsure if they genuinely want to befriend her or if they're trying to get close because of the Beifong name

Also, she's horny. Must have gotten that from her parents. She knows she's hot af and can get any man she wants. Down for a hook-up or long-term. Depends on the person.

Jin Beifong

Resembles Tenzin if he had hair, but with green eyes

Airbender

18 months apart from Mei (yup, the math is pretty easy here)

Very reserved personality, laid-back, enjoys reading, not much of an extrovert. However, he is extremely competitive. No one believes it until they play against him and the siblings in kuai ball. Or hear him yelling at his brother during the school probending competitions.

He is academically inclined and has excellent memorization skills

Although he is an airbender and wants to carry on the Air Nation culture, one of the things he wanted to do was become a professor and teach about his own culture in a more modernized way. This kind of created some clashing between him and Tenzin bc of their conflicting views on how to preserve their own culture.

Flaw - he always has to be right or prove others wrong. It comes off in an arrogant manner at times with people who aren't familiar with his personality. Also, he didn't go to school with two of his siblings so social skills aren't as strong.

Kang Beifong

Earthbender/metalbender

"first twin" by 4 minutes

Personality - a combination of David Rose (Schitt's Creek), Five (the Umbrella Academy), and Toph.

Sassy af, he will tell you what's wrong with your face directly to your face. Anytime he roasts someone or is about to spit straight facts to his opponent, his language becomes academically elegant to reinforce his intellect and sass. Also loves to joke around, especially with Lin. He's very in tune with his emotions and often talks it out with his sisters because they're more willing to listen than Jin. He likes to look sharp and good, so often collaborating with Mei over fashion and presentation when they attend galas with their parents

Flaw - he can be very judgmental of others and is also extremely selective about his group of friends bc of the Beifong name. His sass and extremely outspoken nature makes him intimidating to a lot of people, especially when his voice gets loud.

Has a wide set of interests including sports and also fashion design + tailoring.

Areum Beifong

Airbender

Second twin

The sweetheart, the cinnamon roll of the Beifong children. Definitely inherited Aang's peaceful and sweet-tempered nature. She sees the best in people and is empathetic. Spiritually inclined and always attracting animals or children who manage to wobble away from their parents.

She has a tendency of self-comparing herself to her siblings because she feels that she's not as outspoken or sassy like many perceive Beifongs to be. From her POV, her older sis is a famous celebrity in the entertainment world, her big brother is an academic genius, her twin brother is known for his snappy comebacks and sassy personality, while she's not quite sure what she really brings to the table. Except that she's the sweet one.

Has a good relationship with all of her siblings and parents. Very close with Mei, not just bc they're sisters, but bc Mei saved her life.

Fun Turning Red idea but Miriam and Meilin getting together and Ming having the kneejerk reaction of “No, she’s weird and...” but then she thinks about it and she has a moment of “Oh no I’m recreating that incident.” and she doesn’t want to make her daughter scared of herself like Ming was, not when Meilin has so much happiness over her red panda self. And then she proceeds to try and create bonding moments between her and Miriam.

Just, Ming secretly worrying and Miriam being confused but vibing and having fun with her new girlfriend’s mom.
