To The Shadows,

I don't usually make posts like this, but it's just something that's been on my mind for a while and I thought I'd share. If for no other reason then to give my gratitude properly to my followers, lurkers and shadowlings.

I wanted to give my thanks to all the Artists, Writers, Memers, Animators and so on out there. Everyone is putting their passion and love into their works, and while not everyone is as fortunate to have gathered a noisy little community like the one I've been blessed with, I want to let you know you are all appreciated.

I can't speak for everyone, and goodness knows I'm not exactly an expert or veteran of our little community's culture, but every contribution I scroll pass by on my feed adds a little more inspiration to my own interests and imagination. I may not personally enjoy everything I come across, but just the color and liveliness and devotion of it all reminds me that there's still so much we all have to give.

I also want to thank all the quiet shadows hiding in the back too. You may not always feel confident or strong enough yet to come forward with your thoughts and passion and own contributions, but you are still part of this community. Whether you prefer to just hit the like button or silently cheer on your favorite content creators, you are just as important to the continuation of our little home away from the world as anyone else. Because you are all bottled up potential wrapped up in human form, growing stronger with each new work what lights up that quiet wonder in your hearts.

We all started out as little lurkers in the background after all. Even the seemingly untouchable content creators who first ignited in us the sparks that may one day lead to our own first works.

So, I just wanted to thank you all, because I probably don't say it enough and so many of our members certainly don't hear it enough. So, while I can't reach everyone, I wanted to let those I can reach know my feelings regarding this.

It actually took me a little bit to get to this, and I fully intend to answer your ask about Piggy as well eventually!

I don’t really know how to introduce this topic, so I won’t, I’ll just say that I liked him mostly because he’s seen as the jokester of the boys. Because of the way people saw him was the “memer” because he made those kids laugh in that one scene. I thought he was funny! One of my favorite lines in the book is so simple and so silly, and it was the one about Maurice having both his legs in one side of his shorts (I actually drew this a couple years ago and never posted).

Initially, I just wanted to make a meme page, and Maurice fit the bill for a suitable mascot for the blog, but having him as the face of my blog made me a lot more conscious of him, and he became my favorite over time.

What I’ve come to realize is that I tend to like more pure-hearted characters, which is also the reason I tend to like children’s media. Because the protagonists are all pure of heart and not as cynical as characters from more mature media. I think I had a positive first impression of Maurice when he was introduced in the book as “grinning all the time.” He’s happy and simply being what he is, just a kid.

I realize that Maurice is eventually lost to savagery like most everyone else in the book, but his appearances in the first fraction of the book depict him as being carefree, and at times, more conscious of others than the other kids and even himself later on. Given, this is only because society had imprinted on him so heavily.

In this scene depicted below, Roger and Maurice walk toward the beach from the woods, and they both kick down sandcastles on their way. But as soon as Percival begins to cry, Maurice stops because someone at home had raised a hand to him for hurting a child sometime before his arrival on the island. It might just be how heavily society influenced him, but it shows that he was raised well and that he was disciplined and conscious enough of others’ feelings the least amount to refrain from making Percival cry more despite there being no one to punish him anymore, unlike Roger. It says something about his personal character, even if it’s not very strong (since he gave in later). I honestly doubt that Roger had zero discipline in his life, so that was an act of him disregarding the respect for others he should have been taught at a minimal level (hence why he isn’t my favorite character, though I still love him).

As for design, even if you didn’t ask about it, the reason I gave him a middle part is simply because everyone else seemed to be doing it at the time too. And the reason I gave him a big purple bow has nothing to do with canon at all. I just wanted a way to set my Maurice aside from everyone else’s. I had just watched Beauty and the Beast’s live action, and Belle’s father, Maurice, had a tiny little bow to tie up his hair, and I happened to incorporate it into Maurice’s design. Actually, his bow was small and off to the side the first time I drew him, but it got bigger over time, until it framed his entire lower half of his head. My association of Maurice and purple was also completely random. Purple was just the first color I saw when I was coloring his bow that first time. I really like seeing people associate purple with Maurice! It makes me happy, even if it is by pure coincidence!

TLDR: I just think he’s sweet and silly! He’s the more lighthearted, inconsequential character in the book, and I like that!

Hello, I just wanted to tell you that your work had inspired me to make my own animatics (the first "proper" one is almost ready!), and your art style was the primary influence for my storyboarding. I still remember the first time I watched one of the animatics of yours, and was absolutely blown away by it. Fast forward a year, and I am making my own fan art for another niche, indie game. So, I wanted to thank you personally, and I hope I can share what I did with that inspiration!

I still recall when I first started really imagining animation as it relates to characters in a setting and plot. The animatic of yours is like a knitted blanket, all of the characters go together despite the colour scheme being very different. I was memerized by the coordination - it was like a dance, almost!

So, I started wondering about other games I played, and I thought "Maybe I can try something like that too". It wasn't easy, I suck at art, but I learnt quite a lot. For example, how to blend two different scenes with different rooms in a fluid manner. Or how to protray a character with only a few sketches, as I cannot make every frame colourful.

I deeply recall going back to the"Road Less Taken" video, as well as so many others, and slowing down the speed to 0.5, so I could see every single frame slowly, and trying to figure out how to add movements that won't be too "noisy". In that time, I tried experimenting with art styles, and sort of mixed up a lot of brushes together.

One particular moment was when I tried to make a "dramatic" moment in my badly drawn sketch. I remember seeing that you would take a black and white frame, and then, the next frame would be the same thing but in colour. I thought it was so cool! So, I tried it.

It didn't work out as I hoped (my colouring was messy and poor). The technique I am currently using is by using a black and white sketch, and then the same frame with 3 colours. But I learnt that I could adjust the layers with filters, until the lightening had enough contrast. This way, it would seem "dramatic".

Sorry, that was super long of an ask. My first proper animatic won't be good, but that is another learning experience! If I have the courage, I may post it on Tumblr. Honestly, I really am glad I stumbled upon your videos, else I would not have done all of that drawing and creativity.

I came across this message first thing in the morning and it's made me have so many different feelings.. before I say anything further, I'd like to tell you that I feel this message is wonderful! I'm glad to have you had stumbled upon my videos, too.

Ah, my Road Less Taken fanvideo.. and my other videos too. Being reminded of it really hurts me because I loved everything I put into it, I put in a lot of passion, I put in a lot of love, I bought the artbook, played the game it was based on and went through to do a full analysis, went back and forth through the plot, I just couldn't bear upholding it though, I just couldn't. I'm sad it turned out to be the way it is now since I was really sure I did a great job with it with the skills I had, and I love what I did with it, but I don't regret having it taken down. It took me some time to muster the courage to do it, and I feel lucky that people were very accepting about it too. ^^ It existed and it was able to give a lot of people fun as it did for me, and I'm very happy that was the case. I know that work of mine was really loved, and I'm glad I could create something that could do something like that. I hope I can do that again and I'd probably have a chance to, since I have a life ahead of me.

Enough about me and let's talk about you and your message! Aaaah wow, this is really incredible! Have you seen my channel though? My early videos (and I may still would draw that way) aren't so colorful and proper you know! A lot of them are consisted of sketches of what I want to see in that certain segment. It's very interesting and exciting to hear from your perspective, because I hadn't considered my movies to be so "proper" enough either!! That's why, I can say for a fact, that "Oh you'll do well and do a wonderful job" with 100% sincerity. You came to the right person. I mean look at me! I posted videos like that all the time and just because I thought it'd be fun! If you went to some other talented artist who has these bizarre techniques and astounding professionalism who could create full-fledged CLEAN animations it may not sound so convincing. But i'm someone who starts from scratches and lines and posts those without shame. Drawing colored movies was a huge challenge in my part as well and it took me awhile to feel I'll be skilled enough to do it- perhaps you're already getting a huge head-start compared to how I started out because moving up that one step for me took years to do.

You can do it!! You can!

If there's something I learned from posting my drawings and works out here, it's that you just do what you wanna do. Not everyone will notice you, and your works may not be blown up out there as you wish it to be, yeah, but there's always going to be someone that comes along and appreciates it, which is a miracle on its own. For me, one of those people is you. You'll have someone who comes up to you and does the same thing for you, too if you keep sticking out there. Until then, just continue doing what you love and have fun, without having recognition being your only motive. I made my works for myself (to share, of course, but there were things I was so passionate about I felt I HAD to put this out there and let everyone notice how GOOD and FITTING it is) and although having thousands of people love my works, and tens of hundreds of thousands watch 'em together with me was wonderful.. it all feels like a dream now, the number doesn't matter as much for me. If numbers mattered, I'd have given up a long time ago because there's always people who are so much better than you. However, there's something that only you can do and think of.

See? You're already telling me about your unique style and is thinking of what you could do to make it more effective. That approach you're using is something that I'm unfamiliar of doing. Even if we had the same ideas, I wouldn't be able to create the same things you do and that's what makes yours special! Good luck with that, never did I think what I drew would be able to inspire you to create your own, I should work harder myself to make sure I don't get beaten by you so fast XD, You see, I'm a slow improver. I have artist friends who've gone places and make incredible art. But I can still be one too, as long as I keep drawing. I hope you do that too, as well as keep having fun in the way. I was memerized by the coordination - it was like a dance, almost!"< Ah, I really liked this part of your ask, too. The coordination part is something I really tried hard on when I make an animatic! I sit down and listen to music one day and then something hits me. 'Huh? Isn't this that? And that part works with that and can't this be used to convey this?' Very vague expressions but that's actually how it works in my head. The inspirations come very fast, and when that happens, I sit down and write up a memo to see if the whole song really fits along with the stories I know. And when I'm convinced that it works, I start weaving the two different stories together, the lyrics and the story of the material I wish to make a video out of. That process really makes my heart race because yes, like how you've described it, it feels like a dance, or a knit. Like 90% of the animatics I've made happen like this, so I have no idea when I'll get another inspiration. Till then, I just keep having fun with the fandoms I'm in! Having a good understanding of the source material helps. If you know it well, then everything folds together as one. The song and the story does it for you, and you just follow through its flow.

I don't consider my videos to have the most..how do you put it, creative effects out there, a lot of the effects I put in are something that's built in in the base program or something really simple! You'll be able to learn it in a jiffy no problem. I really look up to vids that have these wacky, shiny and fast-paced effects myself.. One thing I think I could do a pretty good job on, on the other hand, would be the pacing! And that has a lot to relate with the songs you're using. Where the instruments come in, the beat, parts where the vocal stresses, I use the songs I really like, so it makes me think oh, a panel could be added there, and there! and let's make this one drawing show up longer than the others! All that. If you understand the materials you're using (the song, the story, your art) you'll be able to coordinate them well within the limits of your abilities. As I said earlier, that's going to be something only you could do, and what's unique. They say creativity isn't about making entirely new stuff, you know! It's more about putting two different things together in a way no one else has. So movies and fanarts are a great way to show yours :)

I've had others who inspired me to create a video. I've seen lots of fanvids and there were amazing ones, (the fact I was in the kagepro fandom when it was still releasing new songs explains a lot, doesn't it? That surely was a huge inspiration) but I think what's given me the final push to start was seeing my artist friend make a short 6 second one on her tumblr a few years ago. There it hit me that I might be able to do it too, so I asked them what program they were using and made mine right away.

I still have it in fact, it's this video, and I made this one too shortly after. And then I realized that although it wouldn't be perfect, making a video itself isn't something too much of a big deal. You make one and that's it! Because I enjoyed it,(I loved the idea of seeing my own drawings move) I made more.. and I won't be so afraid to, either, because I could always go back to making those simple ones if I wished. Make colored and detailed ones if I wish to push myself further. I'm happy I was able to inspire you to make yours. I hope your experience making stuff would be as enjoyable and exciting as mine!

You know what? The Mario fandom is made out of wall-to-wall toxic people. I like to think they're better than other fandoms, because... well, I just don't know any more, but they're not. Whenever Waluigi comes up there are three main camps, the ones who hate him for no reason, the ones who love memes, and the normal people who like him, and no one can get along with each other. You'd think the normal people and the memers would get along but they don't.

And then there's the Koopalings. Anyone who prefers Junior over the Koopalings, fuck you, why are you even following this blog? First Mario Kart Tour announces "Fuck Every Koopaling Except Larry: You've Been Waiting All Year For Literally Nothing," or Larry will be the only one of you bastards to get an alternate form. Since this and Pocket Camp 'only' made 300 million each, they're just going to stop updating them; because they aren't windfalls like whatever the fuck Fire Emblem game they've got, which is like 51% of their total mobile revenue. No wonder they add so many shitty characters to Smash.

Second, there was finding out you fight Junior four fucking times in Mario Wonder... one of which was a water battle, that was literally made for me. If you assholes at Nintendo could have just come up with three more things, you could have used us. But no, now Bowser Junior gets all the "interesting" fights, and the fandom hates the Koopaling just a little bit more than they previously did... which to be fair, was quite a lot, so I guess there's no significant change here.

Then there was that Nick rant yesterday, plus Multiversus shut down, and claimed that retroactively, that was all open beta, and I guess anything you bought... it just sucks to be you? Some Most of these practices should be straight up illegal. If that was the 'open beta,' what was that thing before it launched where you had to sign up for it and they'd email you download codes? Those 2 don't have to do with the Mario fandom, but their respective fandoms also suck because everybody's justifying it, because everyone's cucked and they like the abuse, I guess?

Anyhow, third... I just found out today that they're releasing 17 new Mii Suits to MK8D, but before I can say 'I hope we're in,' the entire discussion is about how stupid/boring/unoriginal the Koopalings are, and how everyone's simping for the Question Mark Block and Castle suits. Bitching about what a tragedy it would be if any Koopaling suits made it in. Is It Really THAT Bad?

Move over MCU. Step aside, DCEU. Get the hell out of the way MonsterVerse. The big boys are in town now, as Sony Picture’s Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC for short) has dropped the finest piece of cinema mankind has ever seen: Morbius. Starring God’s gift to humanity Jared Leto as the titular Living Vampire, this movie is such a morbtastic experience that it’s no wonder it grossed a morbillion dollars at the box office, cured the impotence of everyone who went to see it, and has been nominated for every Oscar imaginable. Truly we live in a society—or, better yet, a morbciety.

...Ok, yeah, I’m not doing the whole review like that.

This movie’s reputation truly precedes it. It’s hard to say people were actually excited for this, but as soon as Morbius hit theaters it became the laughingstock of superhero cinema; it even released after numerous delays on April 1, perhaps the most apt date possible for a film such as this. Not only did this movie bomb, the Sony execs saw the memes and decided to put it back into theaters only for it to bomb again. That’s right, this movie bombed twice. It truly is the anti-Avatar, and is the perfect showcase for how utterly out of touch Sony is with what audiences actually want from their Spider-Man villain spin-off movies.

The movie does have a fandom… kind of. The main “fandom” is generally comprised of people who probably never watched the movie, a bunch of ironic memers who have transformed the film into something of a memetic badass, a film that can unite the world, end poverty, and even take your virginity. A big part of it is obviously the name of the character; Morbius is just a fun name to say. Another part is definitely that the title role is being played by reviled actor Jared Leto, a man only tolerated when he’s being brutally murdered by Christian Bale, beaten to a pulp by Edward Norton, or in a film that contains Ryan Gosling. The film was basically doomed to memedom from the start.

Now that things have cooled down a bit and the memers have moved on to The Rise of Gru, it’s time for me to ask: Is Morbius really that bad, or is there morb to it than meets the eye?

THE GOOD

Sigh… Ok. Jared Leto is alright here.

Look, I hate Jared Leto as a person. I think he’s a creep, I think he’s an obnoxious asshole with his method acting, there’s nothing nice I have to say about him in those regards. But he’s (unfortunately) not a bad actor, and even with what little the script is giving him here I think he does a solid job at making Michael Morbius a decent protagonist. He’s definitely not on the level of Andrew Garfield trying valiantly to save the dumpster fire that was the Amazing Spider-Man duology, but he’s at least in the same zip code.

The action isn’t too bad either, even though there isn’t a whole lot of it. There’s a lot of slow-mo to the point where it’s like something out of a Zack Snyder movie, but the effect with the color trails is really pretty and visually appealing, and there’s also a part where Matt Smith kills half a dozen cops singlehandedly before Fortnite dancing over their corpses. It’s PG-13 violence, sure, but it is enjoyable in its own way.

Speaking of Matt Smith… It’s finally time to

HAVE SEX!

Matt Smith’s Milo is the absolute best part of the film, full stop. Smith manages to channel exactly what is needed for any given scene. When it’s time for drama, he actually gives a pretty heartfelt performance, especially during his character’s death scene; while it’s not quite as strong as it could be, his relationship with Morbius is actually handled fairly decent, all things considered. But the real fun comes when it’s time to play a campy, hammy supervillain. Smith goes balls-to-the-wall, absolutely apeshit, dancing and being smug and just morbing people for shits and giggles. He basically does a 180 in terms of personality, with a tiny bit of foreshadowing early on that doesn’t entirely mesh with his reasoning for killing, but frankly it’s too goddamn fun to care. Smith owns this movie.

THE BAD

Almost every bit of writing in this film just falls completely flat. Aside from Milo and Morbius, every single character is underbaked. Morbius’s girlfriend? Morbius and Milo’s mentor? The two cops investigating the vampire killings? All of them are rather flat and not explored to any great extent, and considering one of the cops flippantly admits to not caring about murdered mercs because they might have done something bad and thinks you can call a cat by shaking its litterbox, I need to know more. What the fuck is wrong with this lunatic? Please explain, movie.

The story is a mess too, and is shockingly low stakes and features things happening solely to happen. Morbius catches all those vampire bats at the start offscreen, because fuck showing us that. Morbius gets a boat full of illegal mercs to do his bat research because fuck it, plot contrivance. Like yes, there is little bits of dialogue that set these things up, but they’re so baffling and confusing and downright stupid that you can’t really care if the movie justifies them. For a movie that was continuously delayed, it’s pretty obvious no one thought to go and run the script by an editor a couple more times.

Of course, the single worst thing in the movie by a country mile is the credits scenes featuring Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes.

Literally everything about his appearance is the biggest load of bullshit imaginable. Now, he is ostensibly here because of the spell Doctor Strange cast at the end of No Way Home, that much can easily be surmised. And yet, nothing about that makes sense. The spell sent people like Andrew!Peter, Tobey!Peter, and their villains back to their home universe and made everyone forget who Tom!Peter is, so by the actual rules of the spell the only thing that should have happened with Toomes is that he should have forgotten Spider-Man was Peter. That’s it. Why he got teleported into the Sony-verse is anyone’s guess, as is his complete lack of care that he is now likely never going to see his beloved wife and daughter again. He makes some comment about hoping the prison food in the new universe is better, and that’s it for angst from Mr. Toomes despite the fact he is now separated from the very people he turned to crime for in the first place.

And somehow, some way, they manage to make this even worse and stupider. Morbius meets up with Toomes in his full Vulture suit, which he somehow acquired despite Tinkerer and the Chitauri scrap used to make said suit not even existing in this new universe, and Vulture drops this wonderful gem of a line: “I’m not sure how I got here. Has to do with Spider-Man, I think.” This is it. The “Somehow, Palpatine has returned” of superhero cinema. Just an astounding, insanely lazy way of establishing something that spits in the face of logic and reason. Why is he blaming Spider-Man for this, when last he remembered Spider-Man saved his ass to the point where Toomes willingly protected the guy’s identity in prison? Hell, there’s no indication Spider-Man even exists in this universe!

And even that isn’t the worst part! The worst part is how completely nonsensical Leto’s replies to Keaton are, showing that this whole thing is just a bunch of greenscreen and ADR bullshit that was slapped together to set up another (likely ill-fated) attempt at a Sinister Six movie. The whole scene is just jaw-droppingly embarassing.

Oh, and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but he never says “It’s Morbin’ time!”

Is It Really THAT Bad?

Honestly, it’s not that bad. It’s not good, but it isn’t awful. It is essentially a throwback to early 2000s superhero films… with all the good and bad that entails. Most of the characters are one-dimensional, the plot rarely makes sense, and its attempt at setting up a sequel is so idiotic that it makes the Dark Universe look dignified in comparison. And yet, there’s still some fun to be had when it’s Morbin’ time, and Morbius morbs all over some bad guys. And Milo is definitely a fun antagonist, despite how utterly stupid and nonsensical his turn to villainy is.

If I’d compare it to anything, it would be the Ben Affleck Daredevil movie, and honestly how well you like or can tolerate that movie will likely be an indicator as to whether you can like or tolerate this one. Frankly, this just seems to be the angle Sony is going for with its cinematic universe: Trashy, early 2000s superhero throwabacks that feel like they belong on the shelf at Blockbuster. I’m okay with these kind of schlocky films existing, because frankly I’d like a few superhero films that are hilariously dumb as opposed to being genuinely awful. This is nowhere near the fun stupidity of the Venom movies, but I think if you get on board with the Morb, you’ll have a decent enough time. I think it’s a bit too low, I’d bring it up to a 5.7 at least, but it’s definitely no higher than a 6.
