#misa is like ''oh light my wonderful boyfriend~!! we need to go on a date we haven't been on one in so long!''#(i know that when you're dating you're supposed to go on dates. so we have to go on a date every so often to assure me that i'm getting a#good grade in Having a Boyfriend something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve)#and then light is like (internally) 'i would literally rather kill myself than spend time with her but i need her for my purposes so i have#to appease her' (externally) ''ok sure i guess misa''#and then they go to a restaurant and misa waits for him to kiss her the whole night (she does not attempt to herself)#meanwhile light just sits there and goes nonverbal for long extended periods of time while he monologues in his head about how to appear#like a normal (straight) human being (spoiler: he's really bad at this)#and every so often he'll be like ''you look nice. this food is good. other boring pleasantries'' while glaring as if he's poisoned her food#THEY LIVED LIKE THIS FOR 4 YEARS.#again. awful. but also kind of fucking funny. gay aroace guy and aroace girl going through the motions of a heterosexual relationship for 4#whole years. they hate each other for sure dawg ToT obvs misa to a lesser extent but i think she definitely had a lot subconscious hate for#light. that only got stronger the longer things went on#also during this time they definitely had sex a Single Time because they got to a point where misa was like we've been dating for like#2 years normal couples usually sleep together way before then...... and light was like. LOUD SIGH. ok#it was terrible. neither of them enjoyed it and they never spoke of it again#gee wonder why that was (holding the ace spectrum behind my back)#anyways they're so awful im obsessed w them. awful apart and even WORSE together. it's beautiful#then you throw L in this mix and it gets even funnier and MORE awful#(he's bi aroace to me btw. for the record)#serena.txt#death note posting

You stir in your sleep, gradually waking up in the king size bed alone. Mmmm? Where did Koko and Kaku go? Kakucho and you spent the night at Koko’s penthouse, sharing the same bed. Sitting up to rub your sleepy eyes, you look around to see if they were maybe in the bathroom. No one is there, you swing your legs over the bed, wearing the house slippers Koko bought you and head out of the bedroom.
“Oh,” Your eyes light up when you find Koko’s living room is decorated with balloons, flowers, and little presents on the table. You saunter over to the table to find a closed laptop with a note handwritten by Koko.
‘Watch Video’
You open the laptop to find a video file ‘To Our Beloved Waffles’ and you click on it.
“HAPPY THREE MONTHS ANNIVERSARY WAFFLES!” All your boyfriends shout in excitement over the recorded video, Haru being the loudest. You let out the biggest smile on your face, finding this is the most adorable and romantic gesture you ever had from any relationship.
“Sorry, we’re not there with you right now.” Kakucho sincerely apologizes, “We have some things we need to take care of this morning.”
“But we made special plans for dinner tonight.” Ran happily grins.
“For dinner, we book your favorite all you can eat Yakiniku restaurant and for dessert…” Koko waits for the next person to finish the surprise.
“We’re taking you to eat mo-” Haru interrupts Rin’s sentence.
“MOCHI WAFFLES!” Rin glares daggers at Haru.
“You fucker, that’s my line!”
“It was my idea to take Waffles to a dessert place.”
“And I came up with the mochi waffles.” Rin argues back with frustrations.
“Which is a dessert place, so it is my idea.” Haru talks in his own logic, then the video gets chaotic with your boyfriends fighting amongst each other. Ran and Kaku are trying to calm down the two. In the midst of the fighting, Mikey approaches the camera to talk to you.
“I’ll come pick you up, Waffles. Don’t be late.”
“There should be a bag from XX, wear that tonight.” Koko ends the video with screaming in the background. You couldn’t help but to laugh, you always feel lucky to have such loving boyfriends.
“I should do something nice for them.” You come up with the idea to make some bento lunch boxes for all of them. Having fun decorating each bento box with cute rice decorations. Checking the time on the wall, it’s almost lunch time. You safely pack all the bento boxes in a giant tote bag and make your way to the Bonten building. The security guards politely greet you and allow you access. Taking the elevator up to the executive floor and coming to find Misa, the Executive assistant at her desk. “Hello Misa.” You greet her with a friendly smile, she slightly rolls her eyes seeing you approach her.
“They’re not here.” She rudely ignores your greeting and gets straight to the point. Your heart aches a little by how she is treating you. She never seems to like you ever since you started dating the executives.
“That’s okay, I wasn’t planning on staying.” You still remain nice, trying to not let her attitude hurt your feelings. “Can you please give this to all of them? I made them some lunch and it has all their names.” You show her the giant tote bag, she gives you a judgemental stare.
“Why would they eat that garbage?” Your heart is slowly breaking, “They all have refined taste and wouldn’t eat something below their expensive palate.” She smirks wickedly when she sees your expression slowly dissolve into sadness. “You know, I’m just doing you a favor. I heard them talking about you.” You remain quiet, letting her talk, “They’re just using you to pass some time before they find someone else that’s better than you.” There are tears glistening on your lash lines, fueling her to keep talking, “Do you honestly think they like you? You’re not even on the same level as them.” Tears are dripping down your face. “They laugh at you behind your back. You’re basically a charity case and just an easy person to toy with.”
“You-you’re lying.” Your voice is above a whisper and said with no confidence.
She tilts her head to the side, “Am I? I work very closely with them. I know everything about them. Why else do you think they’re not here?” Her wick grin grows wider. “They’re looking to replace you.” You drop the tote bag on the floor, bento boxes spilling everywhere, before running out of there.
“Hello boss.” The security guards bow as Mikey and the other executives are coming back from their morning missions. “[L/n] san was here earlier but…” Mikey’s eyes flicker towards the security at the mention of your name.
“But what?” Mikey questions, normally he is not the one asking questions but anything that deals with his Waffles… he will.
“We think something happened, she ran out of here in tears.” Their bodies tense in shock, hearing their Waffles leaving the building, crying. Who made you cry? Mikey clenches his fists looking at the rest of the executives, they are ready to listen to his orders.
“You four,” Looking at Sanzu, Koko, Ran, and Rin, “go investigate what happened here. Kakucho and I will look for her at her place.”
“Yes, Mikey.” Sanzu, Koko, Ran, and Rin run upstairs to see what possibly could have occurred here. Whoever made you cry will pay. They make it to the executive floor to find Misa cleaning up a mess in front of her desk.
“Misa, what happened here?” Ran scrunches his eyebrows. Misa looks startled, thinking she  had more time to clean up the mess before they came back.
“Oh, well there’s just a little accident.” Misa laughs stiffly, Sanzu’s eagle eyes notice your familiar tote bag.
“That’s Waffles’ bag.” Sanzu narrows his droopy eyes and crouches down to level with Misa. Her eyes avoid his blue eyes. Beads of sweat cover her forehead and he senses she’s hiding something. “Misaaaaa.” His scary childlike tone calls out to her, “You wouldn’t happen to know why our Waffles running out of here crying… do you?”
“I-I-”
“Speak the truth, Misa.” Rin also crouches down to level with her. “You know what happens when you lie.” His lilac eyes are burning holes through her.
“Why did our Waffles cry?” Ran tilts his head with a callous smile on his face, she feels a chill run down her spine.
“Found the video.” Koko was on his laptop while the Bonten Trio cornered Misa. He starts playing the video where you came in with your tote bag.
“Hello Misa.” Your saccharine voice plays through Koko’s laptop, Misa’s expression pales.
“They’re not here.”
“That’s okay, I wasn’t planning on staying. Can you please give this to all of them? I made them lunch and it has all their names.” They all practically melt. You went through the trouble of making them lunch? Rin glances at the spilled content, there was a rice head shaped like a jellyfish. Was that for him?
“Why would they eat that garbage?” The Bonten Trio immediately stare down at Misa, who is visibly shaking. “They all have refined taste and wouldn’t eat something below their expensive palate. You know, I’m just doing you a favor. I heard them talking about you.” Ran arches one of his eyebrows. “They’re just using you to pass time before they find someone else that’s better than you.” Sanzu feels his blood boiling with the poisonous words Misa spews. “Do you honestly think they like you? You’re not even on the same level as them.” Koko’s heart aches when he sees tears dripping down your precious face. “They laugh at you behind your back. You’re basically a charity case and just an easy person to toy with.” Rin is getting close to losing it.
“You-you’re lying.” Their hearts are breaking when they hear you sniffling and trembling.
“Am I? I work very closely with them-”
“I’m done listening.” Sanzu’s voice is dangerously low, his eyes are crazed staring at Misa. “Soooo you know us very well, right?” His smile turns sadistic.
“You know what’s going to happen next, don't you?” Ran matches Sanzu’s smile, Misa freezes, knowing there was no point of running. Fear is last seen in her eyes.
Kakucho’s phone starts ringing to find Koko’s name and picks up. “Yes?” Listening to Koko’s explanation of what happened at the Bonten’s Headquarters and how they need a new executive assistant. “Got it.”
“Did you find Waffles?” Koko asks, hopefully. Kakucho frowns while looking at a distraught Mikey.
“No, she’s not here.” Kakucho and Mikey come up empty at your place. You weren’t here and Mikey tries calling you but it goes straight to voicemail. You leave no clues of where you could possibly be.
“Start the van,” Mikey quietly orders, then looks at Kakucho with the most emotional look in his eyes, “we’re scavenging the city and bringing Waffles home.”
Rin brings the van to pick up Mikey and Kakucho, in the car everyone brainstorms of all the possibilities of where you would potentially be hiding. Koko mentions looking for you at your favorite bookstore, you aren’t there. Ran suggests your favorite bakery that sells your favorite waffle bread, you aren’t there. Sanzu proposes your favorite plushie store as you since you love collecting them, you aren’t there either. Mikey is getting close to having a mental breakdown. Every other suggestion someone comes up with, ends in disappointment. Did they not know you at all? Are they all terrible boyfriends that don’t know you?
“Wait,” Something struck Kakucho of where you could possibly be at, “I might know where she is. Rin, drive to Hotel XX.” Instantly, when Kakucho mentions that, in their hearts, they know you would be there.
In 15 minutes, they arrive at the oldest and one of the most luxurious hotels in Tokyo. Mikey rushes out of the van, Ran follows, then Kakucho and everyone else. He leads them to the entrance of the hotel’s public and famous garden. He finds the red rose garden with the gazebo, running through the center of the garden. His shoulders relax and heart pounds against his aching chest. There you are, sitting alone in the center of the garden, crying silently, wiping your tears away with your sleeve.
“[Y/N]!” They all scream your name, startling the nearby visitors and you. They bring you into their loving and warm embrace. Not caring if anyone sees them.
“We were so worried about you.” Rin wipes your tears from your swollen red eyes.
“Why did you run away?” Haru clings onto you with his big puppy droopy eyes.
“How… did you know I would be here?” You sniffle.
“I remembered,” Kakucho tucks your hair behind your ear, “you said this place brings you happy memories of your grandparents.” Your eyes widened, you didn’t expect him to remember that.
“I… I said that a long time ago.”
“We remembered a lot of things about you, Waffles.” Ran caress your plush cheek.
“But… aren’t I just… something to be replaced? Why would you want to remember something… like that?” Remembering the cruel words from Misa. Mikey cups your cheek and pulls you closer to his, for you to see how much he cares for you.
“You are irreplaceable. No one can ever take your place. We only want you. We need you.”
“Really?” You see the sincerity in Mikey’s raw emotions in his eyes.
“We love you, [Y/n].” Koko confesses all their true feelings for you. This is the first time you’re hearing them. “We love you so much.”
“We love you.” They hug you in hopes you feel their genuineness.
“I love you guys too.” You reply, making their hearts feel warm.
“Let’s go back home, Waffles.” Mikey smiles softly, taking your gentle hand. You nod your head once and they escort you back to the van.
“Happy Anniversary, Waffles.” Haru kisses your cheek and hands you a small basket of mochi waffles, startling everyone else in the van. Your eyes light up in excitement, thanking him and kissing him happily.
“When the hell did you pick up some mochi waffles?” Rin’s eyes are practically bulging out.
“Like I said, it was my idea.” Bringing back to the conversation on the video.
“Oh, you want to go, Pinky Pill Popper?!” Rin is close to beating Haru’s ass. The van gets chaotic and once again Kakucho and Ran are trying to keep the peace in the car. While you, Mikey, and Koko share the mochi waffles. The pain you felt earlier is now gone.  You only feel the love of your boyfriends warming your heart.

Who Said Death Was Easy? [Death Note] Chapter Thirty-Nine
Chapter Thirty-nine: Rendezvous
Keiko’s POV:
Keiko watched as the blonde sitting across from her let out a disappointed sigh. “Man,” Misa pouted, “this has got to be the lamest double date I’ve ever been on.”
The four of them were all gathered in Mia’s quarters. Misa had insisted on sitting next to Light, of course, which pushed Keiko to awkwardly sit next to the raven haired detective. Now, there they were, sitting side-by-side on separate cushions. It was like an invisible boundary, an imaginary line, between them. However, Keiko wasn’t sure if the ocean of space between them was a blessing or a curse.
Perhaps, she supposed, it’s both.
While Keiko wanted nothing more than to be near him, she was also glad for the space. She wasn’t sure she could trust herself to be sitting any closer to him. The closer she was to him, the more his warmth would invite her in and tempt her once more.
We’ve already kissed once… something my ex-boyfriend is clueless about...we don’t need to make it a second time.
Keiko didn’t need the heartache and confusion, not again. She also didn’t need anyone on the Task Force, especially her ex-boyfriend, finding out.
If they ever found out then…, Keiko didn’t want to finish that sentence. She pushed that thought from her mind and attempted to focus on the scene playing out in front of her.
“You know, I did give you fair warning that, given the current situation with Light and I, our options for a date would be sufficiently limited,” the detective commented, gesturing to the handcuffs linking him and Keiko’s ex-boyfriend together. Keiko was honestly both surprised and somewhat impressed that the detective found a chain long enough for them to sit comfortably across from each other.
“Hmph,” Misa slumped back against the couch. “At least I get to spend some quality time with Light-kun.”
Keiko glanced over at her ex-boyfriend. The scowl on his face told her that he’d rather be anywhere else than on a date with Misa, not that she could blame him. Keiko supposed it was in part her fault for their uncomfortable situation, as she was the one who agreed to a double date with L, but she still couldn’t come to fully regret her decision.
She had to admit, a small part of her had been curious as to how a double date with the world’s greatest detective would play out. Keiko knew that there was a chance nothing good would come out of this, but she figured she’d deal with the consequences of that decision later on. Or, hopefully, never, though she supposed that was just wishful thinking. After all, a double date featuring Misa Amane, her ex-boyfriend, and L was probably bound for disaster.
“By the way,” L started, gesturing towards the uneaten slice of cake sitting in front of Misa. “Are you planning to eat that?”
“No way!” Misa cried out, disgust crossing her features. She pushed the plate of cake away from her, “cake makes you fat. I’m not going to eat any.”
Keiko, who had just taken a small bite of her strawberry cake, slowly lifted her plate back down onto the table in front of her. She figured she had almost gotten away with her action, that is, until she sensed that L’s eyes were on her. When the detective saw that Keiko had noticed him, the corners of his mouth turned slightly upwards, and she could feel her cheeks turning a light pink.
How wonderful, he caught me…ugh, how embarrassing. I know I shouldn’t let Misa get to me, but…
“Actually,” the sound of L’s voice broke through Keiko’s thoughts. Keiko looked up, watching as L stared at the blonde girl. “You wouldn’t gain any weight as long as you burned calories by using your brain.”
Keiko covered her mouth to let out a soft giggle, is this his attempt to try and make me feel better? Or am I just reading too much into things?
Across from her, Misa crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing at the detective. “Hmph! So now you’re calling me stupid?!”
Well, knowing L, it’s probably the latter...either way, it’s still oh-so satisfying to watch Misa’s reaction… looks like someone isn’t too happy...
“I never said that,” L responded, calm as ever, as he finished his piece of cake. He looked over at Misa, “however, if that’s what you got from my comment, then so be it. I can’t do anything about that.”
Annoyance flickered across Misa’s features, her lips were now a thin line. Keiko watched as she pushed her piece of cake across the table towards the detective. “Fine…how about this? I will give you my piece of cake as long as you and Keiko agree to let Light-kun and I have a proper date in private!”
“Even if we did leave the two of you alone, I assure you that we would still be watching on the surveillance cameras. So it wouldn’t really make a difference.”
“Surveillance cameras? What a pervert!” Misa shuddered, looking aghast at the detective. “Could you maybe stop it with that creepy hobby of yours?!”
The detective leaned forward, carefully inspecting the blonde girl. “Hmm…you say it’s creepy? You do realize that it’s only for purposes relating to the investigation, right? An investigation that you’re a top suspect in.”
“It’s still very creepy! And, it’s no fair that I’m a suspect! I told you, I don’t know anything about Kira! All I want to do is have a proper date with Light-kun without you creeping around and being a pervert!”
Despite Misa’s persistent name calling, Keiko noticed that L seemed unfazed, it would appear that he’s getting used to it by now.
“So I’m still a pervert in your eyes? Well, Amane-san, feel free to call me whatever you’d like, I’m taking your cake.”
With that, L reached forward, grabbing the plate and taking a bite out of the cake that Misa had pushed towards him. He looked rather pleased with himself. Misa, on the other hand, looked defeated.
“Why would you want to watch Light-kun and I have a date anyway? Why can’t you just let the two of us be alone?” Misa grumbled.
“Who said I wanted to be alone with you? As I said before, you’re the one who ruined my relationship with Keiko. The last thing I want is to be alone with you,” Light responded bitterly, causing Misa to pout once more.
“But Light-kun! I told you before, you two don’t belong together. After all, I’m the one that’s your soul mate!”
“I highly doubt that,” Light responded, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “Anyway I only have feelings for Keiko-chan.”
Keiko ate another bite of her cake and attempted to keep her face neutral as she chewed. She didn’t dare meet her ex-boyfriend’s eyes.
He keeps saying that…but does he truly mean it? However, I suppose…no matter how he feels, and despite my lingering feelings, it’s too late for us. Isn’t it? Otherwise, why would I have let myself have feelings for L? Why would I even let myself go so far as to kiss him?
“I’ll help you forget her,” Misa started, “besides, like I said before, Ryuzaki-san and Keiko-chan would look cute together, don’t you think?”
I’m certain it’s because she wants to keep Light all to herself, but still…why’s she saying all this again? Surely Misa must realize that she’s only stirring up trouble… I know she knows that Light still has feelings for me. So what is she gaining by pushing L and I together? It doesn’t make any sense. By attempting to play matchmaker, she’ll only upset Light more...what’s she planning on doing?
“Them? Together? Yeah, right,” Light had a sour tone to his voice. “Again, that’s absurd. It’s just as crazy as the thought of you and I together.”
Misa, however, didn’t pay any attention to Light’s harsh comment. She leaned forward, looking straight at the raven haired detective, who was still munching on the slice of cake that he had successfully stolen from her.
A sly grin was poking at her face as she questioned, “what do you think, Ryuzaki-san? Don’t you think you two would look so cute together?”
She’s asking him directly?! Wait a minute…
Keiko glanced over at the raven haired detective, hoping to see his reaction, if anything, to Misa’s question. She supposed she could try and piece together how he felt about her. However, much to her disappointment, his expression was neutral. L raised his fork, eating the final bite of Misa’s cake before responding.
“I suppose,” he said after a moment of chewing. Although his response was not negative, Keiko didn’t feel it was positive either.
‘I suppose’. What kind of response is ‘I suppose’?! What is that supposed to mean? As per usual, he’s hard to read…it’s not surprising, but I was hoping, if he really did care about me...he’d give a stronger reaction to her question…after all, he kissed me back...but I suppose, to him, it meant nothing. Like I thought, I have no chance with him...
Misa frowned, appearing to also be disappointed with L’s lack of a clear response.
“Fine,” she started. The blonde shifted in her seat and focused her attention on her next victim, Keiko, “hmm...what do you think, Keiko-chan? You said you and Light-kun broke up so...that must mean you’re ready to move on.”
“Eh?” Keiko glanced around the room. All eyes in the room were now on her, especially L’s, something she was now becoming hyper aware of. The girl was uncertain how to respond, or if she even should respond, to Misa’s prodding. She bit her lip, anxiously playing with a loose thread on her skirt.
“Hmm, how cute…there’s no need to be so shy, you know,” Misa grinned, “if you broke up with Light-kun then that means you’re over him, right? Isn’t that also why you agreed to a double date with Ryuzaki-san?”
Keiko stiffened at Misa’s words.
That might have been a part of it, but you certainly don’t have to know that! Again, why is she suddenly so interested in L and I?
“T-that’s none of your business, Misa-chan,” Keiko stuttered out, not bothering to meet anyone’s eyes. She didn’t want to accidentally give away her true feelings towards L.  “Besides, need I remind you, there’s an investigation going on right now. That’s much more important than a silly date.”
Even so, I wanted to go on that silly date…with L… what does that say about me? I’m just a girl with a useless crush on a world renowned detective. A detective that made the ‘mistake’ of kissing me.
“But this is much more interesting than some boring investigation!” Misa replied, giggling a little, “isn’t it?”
“Not really,” Keiko mutered. While the girl was more than ready to change topics, she had a sneaking suspicion that Misa would keep pestering both herself and the detective. She watched as the blonde haired girl leaned forward once more, looking between herself and the detective. Sure enough, there was a mischievous look on her face that Keiko didn’t trust. Keiko groaned internally.
What’s she up to…?
“Say…have you ever kissed anyone, Ryuzaki-san?” The question left Misa’s lips with a playful tone, but to Keiko, her question was anything but playful.
K-kissed?! L?! Keiko’s eyes widened at Misa’s sudden question. She gave a violent cough, nearly choking on the bite of cake she had been chewing, she doesn’t suspect anything, does she?! No, wait...think logically...she’s probably just trying to stir things up a bit on purpose, so calm down, Keiko...there’s no way that she knows anything about what happened that night. That’s impossible. She’s just trying to get a reaction out of L.
“Are you alright?” L questioned, giving a quick glance in her direction. Keiko cautiously met the detective’s eyes. As always, he looked as calm and collected as ever. If Misa’s question had shocked him in any way, he didn’t show it. In fact, if anything the L looked rather amused at Keiko’s reaction.
Great…not only is he not affected by this, he’s enjoying watching me suffer! He must know how I feel about him! That must mean that what happened that night really was one big joke to him. I’m one big joke to him…
Keiko could feel her cheeks flushing pink with both embarrassment and annoyance as she nodded, not bothering to meet his eyes again. Her throat was on fire, and she reached for her water. While the cool drink quenched her thirst, it did nothing to quell the raging storms of emotion within her.
“You should be more careful, Kagami-san,” L commented. “I wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to you.”
What’s that supposed to mean?! First ‘I suppose’ and now this? His words make it sound like he cares about me but his actions prove otherwise! As always, he’s so frustrating!
“So...about my question...have you?” Misa questioned once more, still peering over at the detective. It appeared that the girl didn’t connect Keiko’s little choking fiasco to her question, something that she was thankful for.
“What’s with your sudden interest with my love life, Amane-san?” L responded, quirking an eyebrow.
“Aha!” Misa pointed at the detective. “I bet you haven’t! That must be why you’re dodging my question!”
“Is that what you think?”
Misa nodded, “yes. That’s gotta be it. You’ve never kissed anyone. You’ve never been on a real date before, either, have you? That must be why you said you weren’t opposed to going on a double date with Keiko-chan!”
“Amane-san…” Light interjected. “Please stop. You’re acting ridiculous.”
The blonde gave a scandalous gasp as she continued on, not listening to Light. She wagged a finger at L. “You do know that dates can end with a kiss, right? Did you want a kiss from her? You sly dog!”
“I see...so that’s your thought process,” the detective said after a moment. A sly grin entered his face, “hmm, so you’re telling me I should kiss Kagami-san? Is that it? After all, she also agreed to this double date...”
Misa gave a loud squeal as L turned towards Keiko, closing some of the distance between the two of them. Before she could even process what was going on, Keiko found herself face to face with the detective.
“Is that what you want? Do you want me to kiss you, Keiko-chan?” the detective questioned. His dark eyes looking deeply into her own. His gaze was too personal, too intense for Keiko. Panic bubbled up inside her and she could feel her heart hammering away in her chest. She could also feel her face flaming, something she didn’t want anyone in the room to notice, causing her to look down at her lap.
Much to her dismay, L lightly touched her chin, slowly directing her gaze upwards at him. This caused Misa to squeal once more in delight, “it’s like I’m watching a t.v. drama!”
“R-Ryuzaki-san…” Keiko somehow managed to stutter out. She could feel the warmth emitting from his body. Memories of their previous kiss flooded her mind and she couldn’t stop herself from glancing down at his lips. If she wanted to, she could easily kiss him once more, but there was no way she would let herself do that. Not again. Especially not in front of Misa and her ex-boyfriend.
Why’s he doing this to me?! He’s not playing fair!
A part of her urged herself to push the detective away from her, but another part of her knew she didn’t want that.
But I have to! I can’t let him kiss me in front of them! Especially not in front of my ex-boyfriend! It’s far too dangerous!
However, before Keiko even had a chance to free herself from L’s clutches, Light sprang forward out of his seat. He was livid. Her ex-boyfriend briskly walked over towards their side of the couch, roughly grabbing L by the collar of his shirt, forcing him to stand up. As soon as L managed to stand up, Light punched him square in the face with a rather loud thwack. Keiko cringed upon hearing the impact of Light’s fist meeting L’s face, and Misa gave a loud, shocked gasp.
“That’s for Keiko,” Light announced, a smug expression on his face as L hit the ground.
Upon hearing his words, Keiko shot up from her seat, her thoughts running wild.
He did that for me?! What?! Does this mean Light meant it when he said he loved me? Does this mean that Light’s relationship with me was real all along? Does this mean Light was jealous?
“An eye for an eye, my friend,” L stated as he wiped his bruised cheek. Once he had regained some of his balance back, his leg shot into the air, kicking Light in the face with his foot. Light groaned, hitting the ground with a thud. “That’s also for Keiko.”
Light’s eyes narrowed at the detective, a death glare on his face. “How can you say that? Who gave you the right to do anything in her name? You’re just a detective. You’re not anything to her but a co-worker on this damned investigation.”
“Well, if that’s how you see it then I could also ask you the same thing. Who gave you the right to do anything in her name as well? Aren’t you the one who broke her heart? She broke up with you, therefore, you’re nothing but an ex-boyfriend,” L responded, glancing over at him. Despite his cold words, the expression on his face was expressionless, his tone neutral.
“Our relationship isn’t any of your business, Ryuzaki-san,” Light snapped.
“Hmmm...fair enough. My relationship with Kagami-san isn’t any of your business, either, then,” the detective commented. “Besides, why are you being so serious, Light-kun? It was just a little joke.”
A joke?! So he admits it…?! I was right, I never meant anything to him. And to think, he had the audacity to tell me to forget what happened that night! How am I supposed to forget when he keeps teasing me like this! And in front of everyone! And hurting each other in my name?! What is that bull?! How dare they?!
Keiko’s hands balled into little fists and she noticed Light staring at her, causing her to look away.
“From what I observed, your little joke wasn’t that funny to her.”
The detective glanced in Keiko’s direction, a ghost of a smile playing on his lips, “on the contrary, Light-kun, it looked to me like she wanted me to kiss her.”
“Oh, just stop it! Both of you! I’ve heard more than enough! How would either of you know how I’m feeling right now?!” Keiko demanded, her initial shock finally wearing off into full blown anger. Tears of frustration were threatening her eyes, but she attempted to ignore it. She dug her nails into her skin as she continued on, trying to stop herself from having a meltdown. She turned towards Light, “you broke me. And yet you want me to trust you again, all because you say you love me? How am I supposed to believe you?! For all I know, you could be lying to me all over again!”
“I’m so sorry.”
She could see Light’s pained expression, causing her heart to sink lower in her chest.
He looks like he really does mean it..no, Keiko! Don’t melt now! Remember, that still doesn’t excuse his behavior! And...as far as behavior goes...
“And you!” she met the detective’s eyes, willing herself to keep going. “Somehow, you’re even worse! I know by now that I can’t trust Light, that I shouldn’t trust him...but you…you’re the most frustrating one of all! I don’t know how you think or what you’re feeling at all! You say one thing but you do another! Didn’t I tell you to stop being so complicated?!”
“Kagami-san,” L whispered, his voice soft. He looked like he wanted to say more, but Keiko cut him off.
“And for that, I hate you,” Keiko spat out.
I hate your stupid face. I hate those stupid clothes you wear. I hate your sweet tooth. I hate those stupid mannerisms of yours. I hate how intelligent you are. I hate how hard you are to read. I hate how vulnerable you make me feel. I hate how you know just how to drive me crazy. Most of all, I hate how I don’t hate you at all.
Keiko could have sworn she saw a flicker of emotion cross the detective’s face, but she chalked it up to wishful thinking.
I couldn’t have hurt him. He’d have to have feelings for me to do that...which he clearly doesn’t. Otherwise, why bother humiliating me like that?
She took a deep breath, “that being said, neither of you have the right to speak on my behalf.”
With that, Keiko was done with her emotional speech. She gave a cough and an awkward silence filled with tension filtered through the room. This was broken only by the sound of the phone ringing. Keiko watched as L took a couple steps forward, reaching towards the side table for the phone.
L’s POV:
“Yes?”
The detective internally cringed as he heard Matsuda’s overly excited voice on the other side of the receiver, “Ryuzaki-san, I’ve got some great news! I’ve just received word that Misa-Misa is number one in magazine Eighteen’s popularity poll!”
L’s voice was emotionless as he responded. “I see.”
“Oh wait!” L could hear the desperation in Matsuda’s voice. “I’ve got more! Listen to this! She’s going to get a lead role in Nishinaka’s new movie! Isn’t this so-”
The detective had heard enough of the young policeman’s blabbering, so he hung up, setting the phone back in its original resting place.
“What was that?” Light spoke up after a moment.
“It’s nothing. Matsuda’s being stupid again.”
“That is his speciality,” Light muttered, attempting to let out a laugh and relieve some of the tension in the room. It didn’t appear to be working very well.
L glanced at Keiko, whose face was still bright red. It was clear that she was probably regretting how harsh she had been, but he also guessed that a part of her was relieved by venting out emotion she had held inside for so long. While her words had hurt him, he knew they were words he deserved to hear.
I suppose I deserved those words, as it appears my specialty is making Keiko upset. However, it wasn’t my intention to hurt her like that…through Misa’s question, an opportunity presented itself to try and make Light jealous. I only wanted to see his reaction to me getting close to her, to see if he’s telling the truth about his feelings towards her. After seeing how upset he got, I can pretty much safely assume he truly is in love with her. Although I knew Keiko might get hurt in the crossfire, I didn’t expect such a strong reaction from her...I’m sorry for making things so difficult for you once again, Keiko Kagami...the last thing I want to make you do is hate me...

So Close (L x Reader)
A/N: Requested by @god-like-eyebrows (and technically @lilredbird101 who asked me a while back to do more L pieces)! Hope it’s to your liking!
Lately, L’s mind had been mangled with thoughts, not just involving the Kira case...but also of you.
You sat beside him on a regular basis, helping him out with the case. You wrote down everything he said, making multiple discoveries and conclusions from his words when going through it all. He appreciated this, especially because it felt as if someone finally looked passed his peculiar quirks and habits. You even went with his idea of going with a secret identity. He didn’t find this suspicious since he had already interrogated you in the beginning to see if you were Kira, he merely saw it as you staying on the safe side and as an admiration for his way of thinking.
Despite the constant worry of either of your hearts suddenly stopping, you did your best to contribute and refused to be overlooked. Which the detective saw no point in; he never underestimated your potential. And it seemed as though the more you spent time with him, the more it felt like there was something between you two than just work. He wasn’t sure what it was exactly until he began to notice little things about you. Such as the shape of your body, how adorably your nose would scrunch up, the color of your cheeks whenever you’d get flustered.
And your eyes, god those eyes. They always seemed to have a certain sparkle to them.
“Liiiight!”
L’s thoughts were abruptly put to an end as Misa squealed for her “boyfriend’s” attention.
“What? What is it? I’m busy.” Light responded irritated, yanking back his arm from out of her grasp.
“I just wanted to know if you were busy tonight. I rented this movie I’ve been wanting to see with you. It’s a scary movie, so I’m going to need a big strong pair of arms to protect me!”
“No, Misa, I can’t. Ryuzaki and I have a lot of work we need to do for this case.”
Looking down at his hand chained up to Light’s, then sneaking a peek at you going through some papers at your desk, L came up with an idea.
“Actually Light,” he interrupted the couple’s arguing. “A movie night sounds like a good idea. But, how about we make it a double date?”
The pair looked at him, both their mouths open in bewilderment.
“Double date? Are you planning on bringing someone Ryuzaki?” Light asked.
“That’s right,” L directed his attention back at you, still focused on your own stuff. “I was hoping to have {NAME} join us as well.”
You rose your head up at the mention of your name.
“What was that?” You inquired, unaware of what was going on. “Did you need something Ryuzaki?”
“Yes, I was wondering if you’d care to join me on a double date with Light and Misa,”
“A-A date?” You stammered, cheeks reddening.
Was L asking you out?
“I’d be more than happy for your company while Light and Misa spent some time together,”
At that, Misa’s face glowed with delight.
“Oh, yes, please join us {NAME}!” She begged you. “With you there, it’ll definitely feel more like an actual date!”
You shifted your eyes to her, then to the two guys, and then to the rest of the team who were watching this enfold. You were officially on the spot. Biting your lip from nerves, you looked back at L.
“Um, okay,” you muttered. “If you don’t think I’ll be intruding.”
“Not at all,” he told you, discreetly hiding his elation.
Misa squealed once more before grabbing your hand.
“Let’s go find you something nice to wear for tonight,” she suggested.
You grunted as she dragged you up the stairs. L glanced up to watch you leave. He popped a marshmallow into his mouth and went back to work, a tiny smile crawling to his lips.
————
“You know, I always had a feeling that you had a thing for {NAME},” Light admitted to L as the two of them put all their work away and made their way upstairs to join you and Misa. “Just never thought you’d do anything about it.”
L shrugged in response.
“I saw an opportunity, and I took it. Although, I will admit, I don’t exactly have the best experience when it comes to dating like you. Is there anything I should know?”
“Just try to relax. All we’ll be doing is watching a movie in Misa’s room, so there probably won’t be much talking. And she must already like you enough to agree to this, so you don’t really have much to worry about.”
“I guess you’re right,” L agreed. “She does seem to like me, doesn’t she?”
Light hummed to second that. The two soon found themselves outside Misa’s room. After knocking, they were welcomed by the gleeful blonde who practically glomped herself onto Light. While Light attempted to detach himself, L nonchalantly walked to you on the couch. You greeted him with a timid smile.
“Hello Ryuzaki,”
“{NAME},” he said back, eyeing you in wonder.
You were wearing one of Misa’s gothic mini dresses and had your hair stylishly down. You face was painted with some makeup that included Smokey eyes and bright red lipstick. You noticed him checking you out and blushed.
“Misa did it,” you explained. “I told her it was a bit much for tonight, but she insisted.”
“It is a bit over the top for a night in,” he agreed. “But you do look nice.”
Embarrassed, you averted your eyes from him.
“I, um, brought a snack,” You brought up, picking up a medium sized tin bucket. “Since we’re planning to watch a movie, I thought it was conventional to bring popcorn. But given your love of sweets, I decided to bring caramel popcorn.”
You opened up the bucket and offered some to him. He reached out and grabbed a handful. Tasting the snack, he released a sound of approval.
“Mm, it’s quite good,” he commented. “Thank you {NAME}.”
You glanced back at him and giggled, your nervousness washing away somewhat.
“I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Is there any sweet treat or fruit you don’t like?”
“I believe that’s classified information,” he stated. Though you may have detected a lightness to his tone.
Was he trying to flirt with you?
“So, shall we start the movie?” Misa jumped in.
“Oh, um, yeah, sure,” you stuttered, breaking out of the now unhinged thoughts that came to your head…
————
You and L sat yourselves on the floor as Misa and Light sat on the couch. During the climax of the film, Light had pretty much fallen asleep and lied back. Seeing this as an opportunity, Misa had lied down as well and snuggled into his chest. With the pair currently sound asleep, it was just you and L finishing up the rest of the film.
“Do you think she’s going to make it out?” You suddenly asked him, pointing to the heroine on the screen who was running from the villain.
“I’ve actually known since the beginning who’d live and who’d die,” he pointed out. “I can even say who the killer is, but I wouldn’t want to spoil it for you in case you didn’t know.”
“Heh, should’ve known that you’d figure it out. You are the world’s greatest detective for a reason.”
“I suppose…” his voice trailed off, unexpectedly appearing distant.
You noticed this.
“Is something wrong?”
He looked to you. He was silent for a moment, as if finding the right words to say. Which you found strange due to him never seeming to care about how to properly get a point across.
“I still have trouble with figuring out things,” he admitted eventually. “Such as finding out who you really are {NAME}. You are the most closed off person I know besides myself, yet you are the one person, other than Kira, that I wish to know the most about.”
You stared at him in amazement, opening and closing your mouth as you tried deciding how to respond. Collecting your thoughts, you opened your mouth again to speak.
“{FULL NAME},”
“What’s that?”
“My name is {FULL NAME}. I’m originally from {BIRTHPLACE}. My mother is {MOM’s OCCUPATION}, and my father is {DAD’s OCCUPATION}. I’m a university student studying criminal justice and behavioral psychology that came to Japan to study abroad. That’s the gist of who I am. Anything else you wish to know, you can feel free to ask.”
His already big eyes stretched out slightly as he absorbed all the sudden information. You simply stared right back at him with a small smile that included an amused chuckled at his reaction.
“Why are you telling me all this?” He asked in a  mumble.
He brought his folded legs even closer to his chest and kept them in place by wrapping his arms around them.
You continued to watch him, your smile now containing comforting warmth.
“Even if you won’t admit it out loud, I know this case has been getting the better of you. And since I know how big of a sore loser you are, I thought I’d let you have this one.”
He lifted his head off from his knee where he’d been resting his chin and looked at you. Your smile a teasing smirk from your last comment. Timidly, his face formed a smile of its own. He glanced at the floor and placed his thumb over his lips as he began to go into deep thought.
“Grapefruit,” he spat out a minute later.
“I’m sorry?” You asked with a raised eyebrow.
“You asked earlier if there was a sweet or a fruit I didn’t like. Grapefruit has always been too sour for my liking. And don’t get me started on dark chocolate. It’s so...blah!”
You couldn’t help but giggle at his statement and when he playfully shuddered while sticking his tongue out to illustrate his disgust. He really was too cute for his own good sometimes.
“It is pretty bitter, isn’t it?” You agreed.
Suddenly, you were interrupted by a loud scream from the long forgotten movie. This made you jump a bit from surprise, resulting in your hand grabbing ahold of his. Once you were over the initial shock, you looked over to him with a sheepish grin and slowly retrieved your hand as a blush began to form upon your cheeks.
“I, um, forgot that the movie was still on,” you shyly explained yourself, your attention given to the ground. “Sorry about that.”
With you still avoiding his reaction to the situation, you didn’t expect his hand to grab yours and have your fingers interlock. You looked back at him, your smile returning as you watched him observe your hands with a fascinated grin of his own.
Tumblr media
“Don’t apologize,” he stated, his voice almost a whisper. His eyes returned to yours, giving your hand a squeeze. “This feels nice.”
The two of you continued to stare into each other’s eyes, slowly leaning closer with your hands still attached. Soon your lips were only inches away from connecting, eyelids beginning to shut. Both of you were on the verge of closing the small space when you were, once again, interrupted by the movie. This time, it was the sound of loud rock music that signified the start of the end credits.
“Looks like the movie’s over,” you pointed out in a hush.
Reluctantly, you broke eye contact, released your hand from his, and got up from your spot on the floor to turn off the television.
“Well, it’s getting late,” you breathed out, bashfully brushing some hair behind your ear. “I should get going.”
“Of course,” he complied, now focusing his gaze on his feet.
“Are you going to be okay? You know, considering…?”
You finished the rest of your question by pointing at Light and Misa’s sleeping figures on the couch. Light’s handcuffed hand dangling off of it.
“I’ll be fine,” he reassured you. “I can easily wake them once the situation calls for it.”
You simply nodded and began your walk to the door.
“See you tomorrow,”
You had made it to the door and had your hand on the knob when your ears picked up his soft voice.
“{NAME}?” He called out.
“Yes?” You responded nervously.
He stayed quiet for a few seconds while you patiently, yet anxiously, kept your feet planted and waited.
“Thank you for telling your name,” he finally said.
You were taken aback by this, but your smile had returned. With your heart becoming a beating nuisance, you made your way to where he was seated. His back was still to you, so he didn’t expect to have you bend down and place a kiss on his cheek. He snapped his head up and looked at your grinning form with a startled expression.
“Good night Ryuzaki,” you happily whispered before going back up and walking out.
He watched you leave and kept his eyes on the door with his hand on the pink cheek You pecked.
“I might actually be falling for you,” he softly deduced.

June has been a fantastic reading month for me, I’ve read so much and have a few new favorite books, along with completing some goals I had. I really hope that all of this reading speed, mood, and momentum stick with me for the month of July because I have a massive list of things to read that month.
But lets get into the month of June.
An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon my rating: 4 out of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this, I liked the cameos that came in and it has made me realize how little I actually know about the American Revolution. I was a little annoyed about how jumpy all of the events were, the story was a little all over the place with what was going on, but I can’t wait to start the next book.
Dear Ijeawele or A Feminist Manifesto in 15 suggestions by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie my rating: 4 out of 5 stars
This is probably one of my top favorite feminist books that I’ve read in a while. I love Chimamanda’s words, she has a wonderful way with words and a powerful speaking presence that shows on paper and while I was reading this it made me want to pull up and watch her TED Talk all over again.
Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly my rating: 4 out of 5 stars
It was really interesting to read about these women and I can’t wait to watch the movie.
The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen my rating: 3 out of 5 stars
This book confuses me. I was somehow both bored and interested in the story at the same time. I don’t know how that’s possible but that’s how I felt. I just had this constant feeling of “I need to see how everything plays out,” there were a few plot twists that really took me by surprise but for the most part, I was really bored with them.
William Shakespeare’s Star Wars Volume the Fourth: Verily, A New Hope by Ian Doescher my rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
This was so much fun to read, I was laughing and texting quotes to my friends and mom. It’s a fun way to interact with the story in a really different format.
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens my rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Oh, my heart! I think this may be one of my favorite books of the entire year. I flew through this and couldn’t get enough. My heart broke over and over for Kya and I admired her and her connection to nature.
Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman my rating: 4 out of 5 stars
This is my boyfriend’s favorite book, he loved this series growing up and has talked to me about it constantly since we’ve started dating, so I finally gave it shot and read it. Overall it was a fun adventure fantasy book.
The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry my rating: 3 out of 5 stars
This is a book where I didn’t really get it, I understood some of the themes it was trying to get across but I guess the execution didn’t work for me.
Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
I don’t even know what to say about this because it’s that amazing. I almost regret giving The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance 5 stars because it makes this 5-star rating a little less special but those are amazing books too. The anticipation for book 4 might actually kill me, I really can’t wait for it. I do already feel like I need to reread this series before it comes out and I also feel like I need to take notes on it simply because there are so many plot points to keep track of.
Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman my rating: 3 out of 5 stars
This book left me feeling a little underwhelmed. The story was fine I just got bored with the characters after a while. I would sit down and read about 80 pages every time but then it would take 10 or 15 pages for me to get back into the story. I do plan on reading Retribution Rails since I’ve heard better things about it.
It’s Not Like Its a Secret by Misa Sugiura my rating: 3 out of 5 stars
I’m sad that I didn’t like this as much as I had hoped, this book had been on my wishlist for over a year and then I finally got it and read it. I think I had different expectations for this book, I wanted more LGBTQ+ rep but the main focus on the story was racism. Sana is Japanese American and Jaime is Mexican American and the story deals with the two of learning to handle the stereotypes that are placed on them. I really enjoyed the overall meaning of the story but I also think it could have been deeper. My main complaint is that the writing was a little choppy with sudden transitions. There were several points where I had to flip back a few pages or so to see when exactly did we get to this building?
Written in My Own Hearts Blood by Diana Gabaldon my rating: 4 out of 5 stars
I’m actually debating on taking another half star off for this woman’s blatant refusal to acknowledge Alexander Hamilton and denying me a cameo when it wouldn’t have been implausible to give him a spot in the Outlander light!
Other then my irritation at the lack of Hamilton my only other complaints were about some character deaths that didn’t seem to fully add to the story line, they seemed mostly there to tug at heart strings.
Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman my rating: 3 out of 5 stars
I am so sad that I didn’t like this more but I had a very hard time connecting and staying with the story. The writing style didn’t work for me, the way it kept turning away from the main plot to introduce a side character or focus on the details surrounding it kept pushing me away from the story.
My favorite book of the month: Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson Least favorite book of the month: The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen
June Wrap Up June has been a fantastic reading month for me, I've read so much and have a few new favorite books, along with completing some goals I had.

Part 1:
The case had hit a dead end.
The Kira known as Kyosuke Higuchi had been dead for over two days. His notebook had been in their possession for exactly that long. With nothing else to do, the task force was still filling out paperwork at midday when Soichiro Yagami clasped his son’s shoulder. “I know we’re not quite done here,” he said, “but have you thought about going back to To-Oh University?”
L had been working through the glass dessert bowl of gummi bears set in front of him. Footage from Higuchi’s momentary arrest played on mute on his computer. Reviewing the tapes was his newest obsession, but he turned at the sound of the chief’s voice. Light rubbed his left wrist reflexively. “What do you mean, ‘not quite done’?” he asked, gesturing to the paperwork over on the coffee table. “We’re far from done. Kira’s still out there. All we have is his notebook and his mess to clean up.”
“The notebook is almost irrelevant unless it lives up to its reputation,” L drawled.
Matsuda and Aizawa looked up from the sofas. “Come on, Ryuuzaki,” Matsuda groaned, “not this again!”
“I agree,” Aizawa said. “There’s no point to debating this crap again. If we don’t test it, we never find out if it’s the murder weapon, we’re not doing our jobs as investigators and the notebook is just a notebook. If we test it as Ryuuzaki suggests and a criminal dies, we’re no better than Kira, and if no one dies, then Kira gets the best of us. We stand to lose either way, so unless someone finds a loophole to work out if Schrodinger’s Notebook is the murder weapon, let’s drop it and get back to work.”
Both L and the chief glared at him, and yet Aizawa stood his ground. Surviving the arrest and re-joining the task force had made him brazen. Seeing a shinigami may have made him at least a little bit mad. It did, however, save them about ten minutes of an argument they’d already had.
“As I was saying,” Soichiro said to Light, “as long as you have your freedom and we don’t have a solution concerning the notebook, there’s nothing wrong with you re-enrolling and helping out at headquarters part time. Watari and Ryuuzaki both agree there’s no risk to the investigation if you do.”
“Well, as long as Ryuuzaki thinks so,” Light said. Of course, the detective wouldn’t allow a risk no matter where he was, but it didn’t stop the bristle of irritation he felt that his father brought it up. Ever since he’d regained his memories during the arrest, it had taken a little time for his mind to recover and reintegrate. As much as he knew he was Kira now, even gloated inwardly at the brilliance of his gambit, months of constant prodding and taunting had given him a bit of a complex for proving his innocence. He still saw doubts in all their eyes and he couldn’t blame them; he was only under suspicion to begin with because L knew Kira was utilizing a leak to the NPA’s investigation. As much as he knew his father would expect him to be defensive since he’d seen the constant accusations first hand, he didn’t like how it made him feel – like a child rebuked.
“No one will doubt your innocence if you take up your studies again,” L chimed in. “You’ll need a degree if you intend to be a detective for the NPA.”
At least I only missed one semester,” Light said. He could only guess at what they’d said to excuse his absence.
“You could stay at headquarters,” his father pressed, “if it helps you balance your school work and the case.”
Light nodded and looked over to L. He was back to watching the arrest footage, the screen displaying the cockpit of the helicopter. Only Light’s face remained unblurred in the film. “Sure,” Light said, “but only if Ryuuzaki can spare an afternoon for another tennis match. Right?”
“Mm.” The detective wasn’t paying attention, apparently.
“Another tennis match?”
“Yeah, Dad. It was just a friendly game on campus in April and—” he paused, remembering what had also happened that day.
“Yagami-san was very stressed,” L said. “I did mention it to him, but then, he was on strict bedrest before the–”
“You said yourself,” Light said. The last thing he needed was to be reminded of his responsibility for his father’s health. “College can be fun when no one’s trying to kill you. What would you say?”
“Work comes first,” he said, “but I’ll see what I can do. We can’t all afford to take reduced hours on full time pay.”
“Funny, I wasn’t aware you were paying me anything.”
“That’s not true. We set aside a sum under your life insurance. Of course, that money is for your family, but it covers every eventuality.”
For a moment, Light blanched. “You’re lying.”
“I wouldn’t lie about something like that,” L said around another mouthful of gummi bears. “If you want, Watari can show you – it’s under the folder marked ‘Compensation’.”
“Or,” Soichiro said, shuffling the documents in his hands, “if you want, you could move in with Miss Amane. You’re eighteen years old, and your mother and sister believe we had a disagreement about your relationship with her, so it wouldn’t be unexpected. I… spared the details.”
Light looked to L, to the expression on his face. It was entirely too interested. “I couldn’t do that,” Light said. “I know I’ve said it before, but I was only pretending to go along with Misa’s delusion for the sake of Ryuuzaki’s investigation. Her feelings towards me are completely one-sided, but he suggested I get close to her anyway. Now that the suspicions have been dropped, there’s no point to continuing that charade. It would be cruel.”
“Ouch, Light,” Matsuda said. “I’m glad she’s not around to hear that.”
“Matsuda’s right,” L said, with a tone of ‘for once’, “that’s a little cold.” The others were too busy looking at Light to notice the smirk on the detective’s face.
“Those were your orders,” Light said. From the corner of his eye, he spotted the shinigami Rem floating in through an inner wall. Although everyone in the room could see her, acknowledging it didn’t exactly make them feel at ease with the situation. “Continuing any sort of relationship with her would be wrong because, to be honest, she’s a stalker.”
Within moments, the mood of the room had shifted. “What?” Matsuda stood up from the sofa. “Misa-Misa wouldn’t do that.”
Aizawa rolled his eyes. “So a pretty girl throws herself at you. That doesn’t make her a stalker.”
L considered it. “That’s why she claimed to fall in love with you the day she saw you in Aoyama. Stalkers develop intense feelings for their victims extremely fast. If that’s the case, why didn’t you call the police?”
Light exhaled. “When we first met, it was because she followed me home. I thought she was just a lost Goth Lolita until she threatened my life on the porch step, so I invited her in and told my mother and sister that she was my girlfriend. I didn’t want them to worry or feel unsafe, and Misa seemed appeased when I played along.” He paused, taking in the concern on his father’s face, wondering just for a moment if he was actually concerned or doubtful. “I thought if I kept up the act until she left again, I could phone the police later and, if necessary, keep calling whenever she came back. I didn’t know until she was in my room that she knew who my father was, or that she had anything to do with those occult tapes, and by then she was insisting on making me her boyfriend, demanding constant contact, threatening to kill any girl she saw me with…” he shuddered, appropriately. “Naturally, I feared she might be the type to turn on my sister, so I complied and got her to go home again. I thought I could wait until the morning to file for a restraining order…”
L picked a few gummi bears out of the bowl. “Which was when you found out she was an up-and-coming idol, correct?”
“Right. And whether she was physically capable of committing murder, I realised she didn’t have to. Idols like her aren’t allowed to publically have boyfriends, and if I upset her, all she would have to do is hold a conference, tell a few lies about a boyfriend and drop his distinctive name to the press. It wouldn’t matter to a girl like her if it ruined her career, because if I survived the media storm, the NPA would find it in a background check. I’d be lucky if I got away with moving to Sapporo, changing my name and joining a tech company.”
“That’s specific,” Aizawa muttered.
“So,” Light said. “I asked my mother and sister to keep her a secret from Dad, even though her involvement in the tapes could have been a lead to the real Kira. She knew I was interested in the Kira case, and if it was a lie, the last thing I wanted to do was mislead you. I would have broken it up with her, probably received a few odd parcels in the mail and requested a restraining order, but she had to find me at school and mislead the whole case as a result.” He focused his gaze just above L’s right ear, where he watched as Rem fixed him with her yellow eye, listening almost unseen.
“Light,” his father said. “Why didn’t you say anything about this before? We could have taken measures, moved house.”
“And disrupt everything for Mom and Sayu? Besides, it would have only sounded like a convenient excuse to Ryuuzaki. He doesn’t need to investigate his way out of a paper bag – he’d assign blame until it ripped itself.”
“But Light, I thought I taught you what to do in situations like these. I thought I told you to tell me if a stranger followed you home.”
Light sighed, meeting his father’s eyes. “You were already falling ill over the case. You were already stressed because of all of L’s suspects, I alone fit both Kira’s profile and his movements. If I was Ryuuzaki, and I knew my prime suspect had been spontaneously contacted by a dangerous individual who fit the Second Kira’s profile, I wouldn’t have waited on a cover story or for my prime suspect to confess; I would have brought them in for questioning immediately.”
When he looked back at the detective, he was stuffing a dainty handful of gummi bears in his mouth. He stared at him chewing. “I agree,” L finally said. “Light-kun’s involvement with Miss Amane was the piece that was always the most suspicious. If Light-kun were Kira,” if L noticed the way Soichiro stiffened, he ignored it completely, “and he decided to find an assistant, he would have also known he was being followed from class to class. He would also know that, thanks to the sheer number of young women he was seen with, his signature ‘type’ had been noted and the least suspicious option would be to choose a woman who fit the type. Maybe what they say is true about the rules of attraction being unfathomable, and maybe it’s not unusual for an attractive man like Light-kun to simply date an attractive woman like Miss Amane, but…”
“But what, Ryuuzaki?” Light asked. He picked a couple of gummi bears from the bowl; not to eat, just to let them sit in his closed hand.
“But, Light-kun,” he pushed the bowl slightly closer to himself, “there wasn’t any chemistry, was there?”
“Absolutely none.”
“If Light-kun were Kira, he would never allow himself to be saddled with such a dangerous woman, not unless the pros of keeping her around outweighed the cons and, if you don’t mind me asking, you weren’t interested in intercourse with her, were you?”
“Not even given the circumstances,” Light said. “She would be much happier with someone else.”
“As I thought,” L said. “I’m glad you could be honest with me.”
Light set the gummi bears back on the desk and wiped his hand on a tissue from a box by his computer. L’s sweet tooth had its risks, which tended to triple when handcuffs were involved. “Thank you,” he said, “but tell me – if I was still under suspicion of being Kira, would confessing this have confirmed your suspicions, or contradicted them?”
The glass bowl was still half full, but L smiled and picked up the discarded candy. Light hid his revulsion under his current expression – concerned conviction – as L proceeded to eat them. Light’s face felt warmer at the sight, waiting. “I might have reconsidered allowing her association with you to continue,” the detective said. “But it would have been a pity to lose such a lifeline.”
So it didn’t matter after all.
“If that’s how you feel,” his father said, “then you shouldn’t continue to let her think she’s dating you. You should break up with her soon, as quickly – and gently – as possible.”
“I don’t think that’s an option,” L said. “Anything too subtle and she could convince herself it never happened.” He swivelled the chair round to find Watari wheeling in a large white cake with a pile of marzipan strawberries arranged on top. He just caught the panicked expression beginning to cloud the shinigami’s eye, willing her not to act. “If I were Light-kun, I would rip the plaster off immediately.”
“That’ll work!” Aizawa scoffed, “‘I’m breaking up with you, Misa. I just need some space from you – a hundred square feet of it, to be exact, and if I never see your face again, it couldn’t be too soon.’” He huffed again. “The Chief would fit what’s left of him in a matchbox.”
Matsuda sighed. He’d looked so uncomfortable hearing all this talk about Misa, but he knew where his loyalties lay. “Sorry, Light. At least you’ll save money.  Or, you won’t, you’ll be dead, but that won’t be so bad.”
“Don’t be an idiot,” Aizawa said. “This isn’t what he had in mind when he said he was willing to give his life for the case. It isn’t noble – it’s pathetic.”
“Both of you,” his father admonished, “think about what you’re saying.”
“I’m just saying,” Matsuda said, “there’s no Misa-Misa in the afterlife, right?”
Light sighed. He already knew what was in ‘the afterlife’, and by the look on Rem’s face, he was going to have it confirmed sooner than he had in mind.
Part 2:
Light had been too distracted by the gaps in his memories, by the question of why L would suspect him so strongly without evidence nor knowledge of committing murder, to notice it before. It had taken until that morning of the 31st, watching from the corner of his eye as the crouching detective replayed the footage from the helicopter cockpit, as he requested for the seventh time in two days permission to prove that the killer notebook did exactly as its rule-page suggested, for Light to realise that the way he felt towards him was a little more strong than ‘admiration’.
He told himself it only took so long because his mind was healing, in its own way. It would often throw out thoughts that would make sense once and then never again, and that was just the process. Having traumatic memories ripped from your brain and replaced months later alongside new traumas could do that to you. Which was why his brain had decided to reframe their months handcuffed to one another in such an absurd light.
Well, we were sleeping in the same bed – still sleeping in the same bed actually. We showered together sometimes, ate together always, fought each other. Accidents happened. It’s not like a conclusion like that was completely impossible.
He tried blaming his hormones at first. He was eighteen – still an adolescent. Superior intellect didn’t make things less intense, didn’t make the thoughts flitting through his head at the sight of the detective less confusing, but then it didn’t ebb once he sat down with a clear head to think it through. Even when he told himself that it was just the psychological effect of L’s brand of investigation that made him think of the detective as ‘desirable’ and himself as dependent on it (just that and his curiosity hanging onto the memory of stolen looks in the shower, accidental touches in bed, wondering with a quickened breath how it would feel to have him so close and have him wanting to be so close in turn) it didn’t change the fact that the detective was the closest thing to compatible he’d ever known in a human being.
In other words, he tried telling himself, it was just the relief of finding someone who could properly challenge him. It was an almost classical dilemma. He imagined numerous superheroes and villains had felt that for each other at one point or another. “It’s for more than the fight between good and evil that Professor X and Magneto stay in touch!” He’d laughed it off when Yamamoto exclaimed it back in high school – if Magneto got all hot and bothered for Professor X, he’d have the sense to take it in hand at the end of the day and not let it get in the way of his work – but that was before he experienced it first-hand.
It wouldn’t matter in the end, he knew, not for much longer. It would fade once the challenge was over and Kira won. His perfect victory was so close he could almost taste the soil they’d be throwing on L’s coffin.
That thought had made him shiver visibly. His father had asked him what was wrong, to which he had simply said that he was a little cold. He continued to work, as though he’d forgotten for the moment that if he wanted to go up to the bedroom and find a sweater, there was nothing to stop him. As though he didn’t actually have a hard time remembering that he was no longer limited by a six foot long chain with a human pivot on one end. This was not the moment to let him out of his sight.
It was worse than he thought. It was one thing to find someone – and a deadly opposition to all his plans at that – who was both compatible on a personal level and attractive in a way he’d never felt for anyone else. It was one thing to want someone so badly he’d found himself about to Gentle search ‘Stockholm syndrome’ before he remembered who would be looking through the browser histories, and on more than five occasions. It was quite another to react so strongly to the thought of that same deadly rival no longer being alive.
He thought he knew the risks going in. He was willing to sacrifice his soul, his sanity, even his family if there was no other option, and although he proceeded with his mission holding onto to all of those pieces so close-fisted, he accepted that accomplishing noble goals came with accepting a certain degree of self-sacrifice. He was ready to give up everything if it meant a better world for everyone else.
So it wasn’t exactly welcome news when he realised where exactly he was willing to draw the line. His conscience? His family? Yes, if it came down to the wire. Any hypothetical threat to his ability to act as Kira is a threat to the good of the world and the many come before the few. The obsessed investigator/warden who just wouldn’t get off his back no matter how little evidence he had? The actual, quantifiable threat to his ability to act as Kira? And give up the chance to fuck the world’s three greatest detectives all at once? No, that would be too much! He would lose his mind first.
He probably had. To think, after all he’d done, after everything he’d sacrificed already, he was still exactly as cowardly as he used to fear he was. That had to be why his priorities were so irrevocably screwed.
Light watched as L’s screen displayed the Kira known as Kyosuke Higuchi’s last moments. He saw the man seize up in the officers’ arms and drop, again, again, again. Light knew, ever since he held the notebook in his hands, his memories fully restored, ever since he caused the Straw Man Kira to drop that he could have turned his back on his duties as the First Kira. If he’d allowed L to take the notebook from him, allowed himself to lose his memories again without writing a single name, he could have stepped out of his responsibility as God in a flash. If he’d just done that and let L’s investigation peter out, he could have eventually returned to his normal life. He could have simply joined the NPA with an impressive ‘worked on the task force against Kira’ note on his resume and the Great Detective L’s representative acting as his reference, risen through the ranks. Knowing his own fate – and he’d learned a thing or two about fate in the last year – he would be back to working with L on another great case. (Maybe as the very head honcho of the NPA, he thought).
And there would be another great case, he countered; whenever Kira paused in his judgements, the crime rate only hesitated a moment before rising right back up again. He initially thought his judgements would only make potential criminals think twice before committing crimes, but in reality it didn’t make them think hard enough and it definitely didn’t eliminate crimes of passion. The crime rate would always lower by 70% while Kira was active, but that margin didn’t completely cover the spontaneous. The criminals that continued in Kira’s world were altogether worse than the ones he’d already judged; their lives meant nothing to them and they simply had nothing left to lose. He used to think it was the failings of the criminal justice system that rendered the threat of state-administered execution useless.
In reality, that was only a portion of the truth; capital punishment was never an effective threat to begin with. Now that Higuchi was gone and Misa still lacked her powers and memories, Light was currently the only Kira left – or would be, once he could get himself access to a notebook. Even if he could, the only thing that kept him in this holy justice business was knowing that, without Kira, the crime rate would be higher. Not ‘present’ – ‘higher’. If he stopped, everything he’d done as Kira would be pointless. If he stopped, every person he’d disposed of for the crime of posing a threat to his spotless record would have been killed for nothing. Since the actions of every dead or dormant Kira stemmed from him, that put the deaths of innocent police officers and detectives, scandalous celebrities, numerous businessmen at Light’s feet alone.
If he stopped what he was doing now, his dream of a crime-free tomorrow would not only have been inefficiently executed, it would remain incomplete and completely useless. Since he didn’t stop to take the easy way out while he could still lose his memories, he would know it for the rest of his life. It wasn’t a fate he was looking forward to.
He picked up the thread of this thought later. When he retired to the break room to eat a timely dinner alone at a table laden at one end with slices of Victoria sponge cake slices on bone-white china plates, the question rested on what he was going to do about it all.
It wasn’t all bad news. For the first time in almost a full year, he wasn’t under any formal investigation. He was still at the task force headquarters, this time under his volition, where he could keep an eye on the threats of L’s investigation. Now that the task force had possession of Kira’s ‘killing power’, the investigation had just hit a significant standstill caused by their own lack of conviction to ‘do what it takes’ to capture Kira. Taking into account that they’d lost the one person they had in connection to the original Kira, and this original Kira was apparently taking a break to let the heat die down, the standstill would remain as long as they remained paralysed by the thought of testing the notebook.
Just as Light expected, this was already driving L to boredom, and the detective had exactly two ways of dealing with boredom. If he couldn’t sate it quickly enough, he hit the ground and stayed there. If he didn’t hit the ground, he found his own fun and refused to let go. It was the detective’s worst quality, the one that could halt dangerous investigations or drive them in their own circles.
In other words, re-establishing regular judgements wasn’t at the top of Light’s to-do list. Now that it was no longer part of the plan to dispose of L either, Misa no longer had a use to him. Without her eyes, without even a notebook, she was just a walking reminder of how close L had come to winning, how close he had come to executing the both of them. She was a complete liability, and the sooner he got it squared away, the better.
It wasn’t all bad news, but the situation was a precarious one; L’s restlessness would only last so long, so if there was a time to give him something to latch onto before he found it for himself, this was it.
Light let out a deep breath he hadn’t realised he was holding, and looked up to see Matsuda resetting up the coffee machine. He was filling the top with the bitter French coffee that Light knew the detective would only have immediately after waking up and never in the middle of a work day and smiled to himself. He would have thought a man whose only quantifiable job was fetching coffee would remember a little detail like that, but neither did he get up to show him the milder, inexplicably fruitier blend that could have saved his job. As much as his claims of innocence as well as the investigation were preserved by keeping L happy, as much as he actually wanted to keep the detective happy, he’d done nothing but cause the tension to rise all day.
That settled it. L’s very presence in his life was integral to Kira’s success. Whatever he did from now on, it would be in the interest of pursuing his feelings for him. As much as L would destroy Kira at the first opportunity he had, Light knew that he’d only come as far as he had because he’d had a rival in the Great Detective L. It was a fated part of his rise to Godhood – yes, fated, not conditioned, not at all humiliating – that, if it hadn’t been for those intrusive investigative methods, he wouldn’t have grown into his role as Kira quite so well. So, it wasn’t just about his stupid desires: getting rid of the detective now while he had the upper hand would only ruin him. If he wasn’t under his watch, working closely with him just as much as he was working against him, he’d grow complacent and his progress now would mean nothing. He could already see the writing on the wall: the role of Kira uninterrupted, society eventually moulding to his vision, with no one to try to stop him but a task force he could already lead by the nose… he’d make mistakes, ridiculous ones, and for those he would pay with his life.
That didn’t mean he was necessarily going to wait until they were both in the bedroom they still shared and jump him – as things stood, that would be a suicidal move. That wasn’t to say he thought L would be against his attentions if he did; the detective just needed to learn new ways of dealing with his obsession with Light first, outside of calling him Kira and slapping handcuffs on him. The way he showed affection needed a little work.
No, more finesse was required. Unless he was careful now, L could still find him out and destroy him, and that could not be allowed to happen. If he was to remain free and have L too, it was a matter of neutralising him completely. He had to make him care for Light more than he hated Kira.
It would have to be a lot. He still wondered how he managed to rationalise the same dilemma, even wishing in the back of his mind that the man he wanted was simply ‘this man Ryuuzaki’ rather than the world’s three greatest detectives who wanted him dead most of all. He even considered that it would have made these choices easier to make if he was just his father’s boss; he knew he couldn’t help that this was how he was fated to meet the only person he could ever truly stand for more than an hour, but it was still, well, scandalous. (In which case, it was a good thing this was L rather than someone with a face to show the public – at least it couldn’t reach the media).
If Light was still having these thoughts, how was L going to rationalise being with a former suspect on a major investigation? Light didn’t think he had any illusions of integrity to abandon first, but with Watari looking out for him and the task force (including his own father, of course) who would have something to say no matter how many times Light had them wrapped around his little finger, L would have to believe that Light was worth more than losing a little face with his employees.
Matsuda picked up a slice of the cake and one of the forks left on a little tray on the counter, taking the confection back to the coffee table in the main room while he waited for the coffee machine to brew. He only paused to smile at light quickly, apologetically, as if his sweet tooth was something he ought to apologise for as a man of the law. . Light refrained from rolling his eyes, for the sake of being polite; the older man’s hang ups about performing his own masculinity were not his problem.
As to his own problem, it wasn’t quite as big as he was making it out to be. He would be making his calls to To-Oh starting tomorrow morning, beginning the process of getting re-enrolled. From as soon as next week, his time at headquarters would suddenly become limited. Just as Light knew he was used to finally working alongside someone on his own level, he knew L would begin to rue his absences when he only had the task force for company in an idling investigation. Since the suspicion on him was only dropped so recently, since his innocence depended on a circumstance not a one of them had the balls to disprove, Light was about ninety percent certain he’d put a tail on him just to have something to occupy himself with. ‘It’s just to make sure Light-kun isn’t using his new freedom to set up some Kira business it’s best to be safe than sorry’, as the detective would tell himself.
And that is when Light will use the detective’s one truly fatal flaw: L’s desire for anything positively quadrupled when he thought he might not be able to have it. It was why he took on the most challenging cases. It was why the idea that Light couldn’t be Kira only made him hold on all the harder to the conclusion. And it was why, once Light got back to university, he’d use the oldest play in the book.
Dating other people, right where L’s tail could see him do it, acting intimately, even romantically, with anyone but L himself… it would be just the right incentive to have the detective act on his feelings. And since Kira wasn’t doing anything, the question of his feelings toward his former suspect, his want for him, would consume him above even the investigation. He’d truly regret letting Light scale back his hours. He’d have no choice but to come back to university and watch him personally. Whatever plan he might have to use the notebook against the task force’s wishes would simply have to wait until Light could stop even that.
That left Misa, the Littlest Liability herself. He’d already set up the reasons with the task force why he might want to drop her in the near future – hell, he even had their permission to dump her as soon as he could. It would help, but it wouldn’t be enough. From the moment she’d found him, she’d latched on to a near abusive, definitely dangerous degree; if she wasn’t putting his life at risk with her reckless behaviour, he was risking his life just to clean up her messes. That her very proximity to him was suspicious, it was a waste of his time and effort to say the least. When he thought he could exploit her superior power to kill L, she was just worth keeping around, but now that he’d made his decision to keep him alive…
Obviously, he couldn’t kill her. Rem would never allow it. The shinigami might consider L’s existence in perpetuity to be a threat to Misa’s life, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t extricate himself from her clutches completely either. It would just require something a tad more effective than a harsh break-up: Light wasn’t fool enough to brush off her death threats, and while she knew where he went to university, where he worked, where his family lived, she was a threat to his current plans. If she found out about his plans to seduce L, the detective would definitely wind up dead.
He meant it when he told the task force that Misa would be better off with someone who could return her feelings. But as long as Rem refused to see it that way, he could complain as much as he wanted: he was going to be stuck with her regardless. Which, obviously, was a problem.
Light sighed and lifted his head to see Matsuda heading out with L’s coffee. Setting his empty plate in the sink, he followed behind the rookie with the full pot of sugar cubes he’d forgotten. He knew it was petty, but after months of being accused of murders most foul, after two days of the black cloud of rebuilding his plans and working around L’s restlessness, watching the great detective accuse the rookie of trying to poison him seemed righteous somehow.

Chapter Seventeen:  A Dark World Without Light
Word Count:  3862
Chapter No. 17/37
Notes:  I got nothing.  However, there’s going to be a part that I imagined some of my fan fiction babes being if we were to ever meet in person.
Chapter Sixteen:  Ohayo, Misa Misa
“Alright, children,” I called out to Julian and Paul still in the house, “Into the minivan.”
“I don’t have a minivan,” Julian wrapped his arm around my waist, “And last I checked, you don’t either.”
“You know what I meant,” I rolled my eyes.  I was in love with this moron.  How will forever baffle me, but I was.
“Sorry,” Paul finally came out of the house, “I had to put her back in her case.”
 “Nerd.”
“Hey, Julian,” I spoke meekly from the passenger seat, “You think we could do these somewhere that’s not in town?  I’d hate for someone local to see this.”
“Ok,” he allowed, understanding my apprehension, “You want to do this in Kansas City instead?  The cityscapes would make for a better backdrop than Lenexa.”
“Oh, hell yeah!” Paul chirped, “Cityscapes always make a good backdrop.”
“And besides,” I added, “I’m pretty sure Death Note takes place in Tokyo.  The closest we’re going to get is Kansas City.”
“That’s perfect,” Julian approved, “Look at you being all smart.  Why do you have to be so smart?”
“Because I was cursed with a borderline genius IQ,” I giggled, “Yet, here I am, being Misa Amane.”
“Be nice to Misa,” he scolded, “She tries, dammit.  Light never loves her back.  He just uses her.”
“And look who’s being the Light to my Misa,” I worried, “Are you using me?”
“Not to wipe out the criminal underworld,” Julian promised, “Or at all, for that matter.  I swear to you on my own Death Note…Which I’m hoping you brought one.  Because I didn’t.”
“How are you supposed to be Kira without a Death Note?” I gasped, digging in my bag for a black, leather bound notebook, “Look at that!  Misa not being useless for a change.”
“Again,” he slapped my wrists, “Be nice to Misa.”
“Fine,” I pouted, “But when we get home tonight, I’m losing Misa completely.”
“Will you still tell me you don’t want to live in a world without Light?” he requested.
“How many times am I going to have to say that?” I wondered.
“Until I stop laughing about L making dad jokes,” Julian grinned.
“So, never,” I cringed, “They don’t make enough whiskey to get me through that.”
“L making dad jokes will never get old,” he laughed, then bit his tongue, “Much like L himself…”
“Julian!” my heart stopped, “That was dark!”
“I know,” he cringed, “I hated myself for even saying it.”
“L was my son!” I squealed, “He was my baby and he was killed!  L deserved better!  My little angel deserved the world!  How dare you?”
“I’m sorry!” Julian apologized all over himself, “I’d bring him back if I could, too!”
“We can trade L for Misa!” I snapped, “She can burn in Hell right next to Light.”
“She can’t!” he reminded me, “Once you write a name in the Death Note, you can’t go to Heaven or Hell!”
“Forgive me for not being religiously up to date on the rules of the Death Note!”
“For the love of God!” Paul cut in, “You two fight like a married couple!  We’re in a closed and confined space and I’m still here!”
Both Julian and I broke into hysterical laughter.  Paul made a good point.  Julian and I did fight like a married couple.  It blew my mind that our first couple would be Light and Misa over Edward and Winry, if we’re not counting Sebastian and Ciel.  That’s not necessarily a couple.  They’re a pair, don’t get me wrong, but not a couple. Maybe one day, though.  In fact, I knew it was going to happen one day.  It couldn’t not happen.  If we were doing Royai, we had to do Edwin, too.  At least once.
“Sorry, Paul,” I came down first, “It’s a part of the life.  We get a little heated about our favorite characters.”
“I see that,” he recovered from our shrill argument, “I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone call a character their child before.”
“And the thing is,” I went on, “L is older than me.  But I still love him like my son.  I want to love him and take care of him and give him all the love in the world.  Therefore, L is my son and no one can tell me otherwise.”
“You two were definitely meant for each other,” Paul gave us his blessing, “You’re both on that same level of weird.  Julian, if you two ever break up, I’m beating you with Punchline.”
“Punchline?” I looked to Julian for clarification.
“Harley Quinn’s hammer,” Julian explained, “Paul’s got a thing about superheroes, especially Harley. She’s a little nuts.”
“Excuse me?” Paul squeaked, sounding just as offended as I was with L, “Harley’s not a little nuts. She’s got an extreme case of Stockholm Syndrome!  Never would’ve guessed you went to college for psychology.”
“I know what extreme Stockholm Syndrome looks like,” Julian snapped, “I’ve seen it firsthand.”
All of a sudden, the car fell totally silent.  And only one other person in the car knew why.  I saw a vein rise in Julian’s hand as his grip around the steering wheel tightened a little.  Paul spoke in quick stutters, “Julian…I’m…”
“No,” Julian stopped him, “Not going to bring it up anymore.  Going to pretend this never happened.  We’re going to move on from it.  Agreed?”
“Agreed,” Paul and I harmonized.  No little kid should have to see what Julian’s seen.  As much as I thought L deserved a little better, Julian deserved a lot better.
“Alright then,” he nodded, “Now, someone say something before this turns into uncomfortable silence.”
“Julian,” I asked, “Would you ever be my stalker?”
“I don’t have to stalk you,” Julian assured me, “You’re my girlfriend.  What you do when I’m not around is your own business.  I trust you.  Why?”
“Well,” I went on, “What if other girls were hitting on you?”
“What are you talking about?” he gave me a look, “You know better.  Hell, you covered me in liquid latex, so other women wouldn’t hit on me.”
“Yeah, I did,” I smiled, putting my annoying Misa voice on again.  The things I do for you, Julian, “But I never said you could date other girls.”
“I thought you said it was ok if I used you,” he caught me, “A minute ago, you swore you’d do anything I asked.”
“But those are two totally different things,” I whined.
“Mimi,” Julian took my hand, “Have I told you today how much I love you?”
“No,” I dangled my feet over the edge of the seat, “But please.  Do go on.”
“I love you,” he smiled again, “I love you so much.”
“You’re welcome,” I squeezed him back.
“What the hell just happened?” Paul wondered, questioning our sanity.
“I had to do a quick Misa line,” I explained, “If I didn’t, Julian would’ve drove into oncoming traffic.”
“And I appreciate that,” Julian kissed my cheek as we pulled into Kansas City, “This is why I keep her.”
“Hold onto her and never let her go,” Paul demanded.
“We’ll see how this goes,” Julian shot me a wink, “Where to first?”
“I don’t know,” I thought it over, “Date with Light and Misa?”
“Misa got pissy about a piece of cake,” he reminded me.
“Cake makes you fat,” I quoted her, “I’m not eating any.”
“Actually,” Julian went from Light to L at the drop of a hat, “I found that you don’t gain any weight as long as you burn calories by using your brain.”
“Hold on there, tiger,” I called him out, “You’re Light, not L.”
“L did say he might end up falling for Misa,” he defended.
“Otakus are weird,” Paul attached a new lens on his camera.
“Yes, we are,” Julian wasn’t denying that.  And I couldn’t blame him.  I wouldn’t either.  The three of us finally pulled into one of the parks in Kansas City, “We start simple. We’ll get some Light and Misa holding hands in the park, being adorable action.  Good?”
“I’ve never done this before,” I confessed, “I have no clue what to do.”
“That’s why you’re lucky your boyfriend’s a seasoned pro,” he grabbed my car door for me, “The best way to do this is to completely drown yourself in Misa’s mindset.  All you need is a blinding obsession for me.  The more Misa you are in your head, the more it’ll show on camera.  I’ll be Light.  You be Misa.”
 “That simple?”
“It’s that simple,” Julian assured, sitting with me on the edge of a massive fountain, “Here.  How about I put it in terms you’ll understand better?  Think about it like you’re writing fan fiction.  How would Misa react to Light?  He’s brought her on a date to this beautiful park.  She’s so disgustingly in love with him.  Show me what that looks like.”
Of course, in true Misa fashion, I lit up like a Christmas tree.  She was so head over heels in love with Light.  Sort of like me with Julian.  Only difference was I wasn’t going to help him become the god of a new world order and kill anyone that got in his way.  For the next ten minutes, it was Light and me.  His Misa Misa.  And all while Paul’s shutter snapped away.  When we were all done, Julian finished us off with a soft, gentle kiss. One like Light would give Misa. Enough to keep her happy and keep up appearances.
“You’re a natural, Misa Misa,” he praised, “And you were worried about this.  You are a model after all.”
 “That’s right,” I chirped, “Last I checked!”
“There she is,” Julian beamed, cradling my cheek in the palm of his hand, “There’s my girl.”
“Shut up,” I came back to being me, blushing and all.  For it being my first time, it wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be.  Coming up with poses came naturally and thinking of it the way Julian told me to was a big help.
“Oh my god!” some random girl squealed in the middle of our shoot.  She couldn’t have been more than fourteen, “You’re back!  You’re coming back!”
“Excuse me?” I gave her a look.
“I’m sorry,” she settled down, “Are you Julian Cooke?”
“I am,” Julian confirmed, “Do I know you?”
“I’m a big fan!” the girl freaked, “And I figured since you were taking pictures that you were maybe coming back to the cosplay world?”
“That’s entirely up to her,” he nodded toward me, “If she says it’s ok, I’ll be coming back with her on my hip.  She’s never done this before, so you guys are going to have to go easy on her, ok?”
“That’s fine!” she nodded, damn near giving herself whiplash, “I don’t mean to gush, but you are my senpai.”
“That’s so sweet,” Julian awed, “Thank you.”
“Do you think I could get a picture?”
“Ordinarily, I’d say yes,” he shot her down, “But I’m kind of in the middle of a shoot with my girlfriend, so…”
“Of course,” the girl turned bright red, “I’m sorry.  I don’t mean to break this up.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Julian settled her, “What’s your name?”
 “Karina,” she chirped.
“Karina,” Julian repeated, nearly making her faint, “She and I have to be at the day job tomorrow morning, so we won’t be sticking around much longer, but I tell you what.  If it’s alright with you, Mimi, I’d like for us to come back next weekend.”
“Sure,” I allowed, “That’s fine with me.  We can come back.  It is for a fan.  I know what that’s like.”
“Do you read a lot of fan fiction, Karina?” Julian asked.
 “Tons!” Karina sang, “Why?”
 “Who’s your favorite?”
“My favorite fic writer?” she thought it over, “Easily, this girl named SenshiTenshi.  She writes some of the best fic on the internet.  And so often!  Although, we were supposed to get something this past week, but she never posted.”
“I bet I can make it up to you,” Julian smirked at me.
“Julian,” I glared through him, “What are you trying to get at?”
“Go on,” he nudged, “She did say the whole internet.”
“I’m so writing your name in my Death Note.”
 “You know you love me.”
“I don’t understand,” Karina was thoroughly confused, “How can you make up for SenshiTenshi not posting this week?”
“Because,” I sighed out, mentally preparing myself for what was about to happen, “I’m SenshiTenshi.”
“AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” she let out a shrill squeal that was soon squelched, “Wait.  How do I know you’re really SenshiTenshi?”
“I announced a Free! fic for this week, didn’t I?”
 “Yeah.”
“I can tell you what it’s about,” I explained, “It’s not done yet because I’ve been super busy this week between work and Julian, but I can give you spoilers.”
“No!” Karina looked mortified, “I want to experience it all at once!  Besides, that doesn’t prove anything.”
“Hold on,” I grabbed my phone from my bag, “What’s your Twitter handle?”
“HiImKarina,” she told me as I punched it into my search bar.  Sure enough, there she was.
I tapped the follow button, “There you go.  I just followed you from my verified account.  I’m pretty sure that should give some validation.”
Karina’s phone chimed shortly after with a notification.  And she went back to being all squealy, “You’re a god to me!  I love you!”
“I love you, too, sweetie,” I smiled.  This was cool!  I’ve never met one of my fans before!  I didn’t know there’d be one so close to me.
“I can’t believe my favorite cosplayer and my favorite fic writer are dating!” Karina couldn’t keep the smile off her face if she wanted to, “This is making my little fangirl heart go pitter patter.  This is better than watching the OTP become canon!”
“Whoa there,” I slowed her down, “That’s crazy talk.”
“Are you kidding?” she squeaked, “I’m sorry for going against you here because you’re my queen, but this is real.  Actually real.  This is more than just the stories and the characters we’ve come to know and love.  You guys mean so much to me.”
“And you mean the world to us,” Julian gave her a hug.  I thought she was going to melt in his arms, “Without you, there’d be no us.  I wouldn’t be getting back in the game if it weren’t for her. She’s a cosplayer, too.”
“I see that!” Karina freaked some more, “You make a really good Misa!”
“Thank you,” I awed, starting to fall in love with her a little.  I wasn’t sure who was more excited to meet who!
“Does this mean you two are going to cosplay together?” she hoped.
“That’s the plan,” Julian confirmed, “As hard as this is going to be, I want you to keep my comeback a secret.  You can say you met us today, but other than that, I need you to keep a tight lip. Can you do that for me, Karina?”
“Uh-huh,” Karina nodded slowly, unable to form sentences.
“Good,” he praised her, “Will we be seeing you next weekend?”
“Uh-huh,” she came back into her head, “What will it be next weekend, if this weekend was Death Note?”
“I don’t know,” Julian looked over at me, “We’d have to talk that over.”
“Is there anything you’d want to see us do?” I asked.
“Well,” Karina thought it over for a minute or two, “You guys make such an adorable Light and Misa together.  Maybe another one of my anime OTPs.”
 “Do tell,” I listened intently.
“Do you think…” she suggested, “Maybe you could do Haruhi Fujioka and-”
“Absolutely!” I agreed, knowing exactly how she was going to finish that.  Haruhi and Tamaki have been how Julian and I have been comparing our relationship almost since the beginning.  I’d be more than happy to do that.
“Awesome!” Karina smiled, “I’d love to see you and Julian as Haruhi and Hikaru.”
 “What?” Good feeling gone.
“Yeah,” she reiterated, “Haruhi and Hikaru are so obviously meant for each other.  Much more than her and Tamaki.  She got Hikaru to open up to more than just Kaoru.  And Hikaru’s more in love with her than Tamaki.  I don’t understand why people say yes to TamaHaru more than HikaHaru.”
I did my best to keep my rage under wraps.  Keep your cool, Mimi.  Don’t lose it on a fan.  Don’t go batshit on a fan.  She loves you.  You love her. That’s the way the fans work. They’re more to you than fans. They’re family.  They’re your babies and you love them.  You don’t want to punch them because their ship would make your ship sink.  In the end, the SS TamaHaru sailed.  People are entitled to their opinion, no matter how wrong you make think it is.
“Mimi?” Julian looked over at me, “You look like you’re about to burst a blood vessel.  You ok?”
“Ok,” I settled down, “We can do HikaHaru next weekend.  That’s fine.”
 “Yay!” Karina chimed.
“But until then,” Julian took over, “We have a Death Note shoot to finish.  I’m sure my photographer’s got other things to do today.”
“He really doesn’t,” Paul yelled over to us.
“Well, I’d like to spend some uninterrupted time with my waifu,” Julian clarified, “Before we have to get up at the ass crack of dawn to go to work.”
“My god,” Karina gasped, “What do you two do that makes you get up so early?”
“We work in a café where we live,” he told, “We have to be there by six.”
“In the morning?” she cringed, “I couldn’t do it.”
“It’s simple once you get used to it,” Julian brushed her off, “Now, if you’ll excuse us.”
“Yeah,” Karina let us go, “Go ahead.  It was awesome meeting you guys today!”
“You, too,” he shot her a wink, making her nose erupt, “See you next weekend.”
“Bye…” she swooned, leaving us alone.
“Sorry about that,” Julian apologized, “Not the first time a fan has come up to me during a shoot.”
“Probably not the last either,” Paul scoffed, fiddling with the settings on his camera.
“Now, you,” Julian sat me down, “Are you alright?  For a minute there, I thought you were going to punch her.”
“I’m a TamaHaru girl, Julian,” I explained, “We’re a TamaHaru.  As much as I adore Hikaru Hitachiin, I don’t want a Hikaru coming between us.”
“And there won’t be a Hikaru coming between us,” he held me against his chest, “I promise.  I don’t know any ginger twins.  How about you?”
 “No,” I giggled.
“There you go,” Julian chimed, “We’re good.  Now, can we go back to snapping some pictures of the two of us being someone we’re not?”
“Of course,” I laid my head in his chest, “I really don’t know what I’d do in a world without my Light.”
“Yes,” he agreed, “That would be dark.”
“Goddammit, Julian,” I laughed, “I knew that was going to happen.  I fucking knew it.”
“I couldn’t help myself,” he giggled a bit.
“You’re a dork,” I shook my head, “And I love you.”
“I love you, too,” Julian kissed the top of my head, “Paul, are you getting any of this?”
“I’m getting all of this,” Paul assured, capturing our adorable moments on film.
“Good,” he sat me on his lap, “Now, Mimi, I need the Death Note.  It’s been a while since I’ve done any solo shots.  I should probably update the portfolio a bit.”
“That’s fine,” I allowed, digging in my bag.
“But,” he stopped me, “I want you to kind of hide the Death Note.  Somewhere in the grass, so the pictures look more organic.”
“Ok,” I got up and looked around for somewhere to put the notebook.  Looks like someone was trying to recreate the moment where innocent high school student Light Yagami became the vicious serial killer Kira.  And it all started with him finding the shinigami’s Death Note.  It was really too bad we didn’t have someone to be Ryuk.  That would’ve made these pictures perfect, “Alright, Julian!  It’s hidden!”
Paul got down in the grass, getting his perfect angle while I sat off to the side and watched idly by. It was amazing to see Julian get so into it.  I’ve never seen him so focused.  In a split second, he had gone from Julian to Light and it almost gave me chills.  I wonder if he could go from Light to Kira the same way.  That would’ve been a more terrifying transformation.
Julian and I finished our shoot and left Paul in Kansas City.  It had gotten late and I could hardly keep my eyes open.  I loved being someone else for the day, but it was time for me to go back to being me, for Julian to go back to being Julian, and for us to go back to being us.  Taking off Misa’s knee high leather boots was the current highlight of my day.  Sure, they made me feel like a badass, but after wearing them all day, they were killing me.
“Julian,” I threw myself on the couch in my living room, “My feet hurt like hell.”
“My poor baby,” he threw his keys on the coffee table, “What did we learn?”
“Platform boots were created by Satan himself?” I assumed.
“Probably,” Julian giggled, taking my aching feet.  This angel. He started popping my toes for me.
“Mother of God,” I had half an orgasm, “Julian, I love you.”
“I love you, too,” he continued, “Is it because I’m popping your toes.”
“That’s exactly why I love you,” I moaned as he dug his thumbs into my heels, “And if you keep this up, you may be getting me pregnant tonight.”
“Maybe not pregnant,” Julian slowed me down, “I wouldn’t mind getting some tonight, but let’s wait on the babies, yeah?”
 “Ok,” I sighed out.
“So, this is happening?” he wondered, “You and I are having sex tonight?”
“If I don’t fall asleep first,” my eyelids grew heavier and heavier by the second as my entire body loosened up.
“If you’re that exhausted, baby,” Julian kept rubbing my feet, “I’m not having sex with you.  If we’re going to make the proverbial beast with two backs, I want you wide awake.  It’d be a bit of a wound to my pride if you were to clock out in the middle.”
“Heaven forbid if we have that,” I teased, sticking my toes in his face.  In retaliation, he bit them, “Ouch.  What the fuck?”
“That’s what you get for putting your foot in my face,” he fought, “Next time, I’m biting more.”
“Is that a promise?” I smirked.
 “You are delirious,” Julian chuckled.
And after that, I was out. It had been a long day.  It was almost eleven o'clock when we got home. I was done.  I had enough of the day and I was going to have to wake up bright and early in the morning.  But at least when I did, his arms would be around me.  His body keeping me warm.  And the world was a little less shitty.

Who Said Death Was Easy? [Death Note] Chapter Thirty-seven
Chapter-Thirty-seven: Tension
Keiko’s POV:
“Are you sure this is really necessary, Ryuzaki-san?” Light questioned, bewilderment in his voice.
Keiko honestly couldn’t blame him. Her gaze flitted towards the chains linking her ex-boyfriend and the world’s greatest detective together. She wondered the same exact thing. What in the world was L thinking? He couldn’t be serious, could he? Surely he was just playing a practical joke. However, somehow it didn’t seem like he was joking, which put Keiko on edge.
“Trust me, this is as difficult me as it is for you,” L replied dryly.
So...he is being serious...great...how in the world does he come up with this stuff?! Was there really no other solution that he could come up with?! This means I’ll be stuck watching my ex-boyfriend and my...crush? being chained up together all the time! This can’t lead to anything good...
Misa also looked less than thrilled at the current situation, “is this what you meant by being together twenty-four seven with him?!”
“I told you, I’m not doing this because I want to,” L murmured, studying the handcuffs. He was also clearly uncomfortable with the situation, but Keiko now knew from experience that there would be no easy way to change his mind.
He really thinks this is the best way to keep watch over Light...well, I suppose it is, but at what cost? Does he suspect him that much that he’s willing to go this far?
“That’s not fair! I’ve already had to share Light for so long! Now he’s finally single and I don’t want to share him with you! You’re ruining things!” Misa cried out, despair in her voice, “I never even got to go on a date with him yet!”
Keiko gave an awkward little cough at Misa’s words.
How could Misa accuse L of ruining things when she ruined things for Light and I?! If Light was being truthful with me on the roof, then if she had never meddled in, Light and I would probably still be together now. Keiko bit her lip, however, perhaps it’s a good thing we aren’t together anymore, especially given everything that’s happened recently…
“Oh, you two can still go on dates if you wish, but it will have to be all three of us,” L replied matter-of-factly, breaking through Keiko’s thoughts.
“No way!” Misa crossed her arms, “are you telling me we’ll have to kiss in front of you and stuff?!”
L raised an eyebrow, “I’m not telling you to do anything, but I suppose that would be the situation in that case, yes.”
At the word kiss, Keiko let out an involuntary flinch as she thought back to the moment that ruined her relationship with Light. She could feel Light’s gaze shift towards her and she made a conscious effort not to accidentally catch her ex-boyfriend’s eye. Only a couple hours had passed since the little moment she had shared with him on the roof.
Not to mention, there was also the kiss she had shared with the world’s greatest detective only a few days ago flitting through her mind. That was definitely something to keep quiet about. She was sure, given his confession, if Light found out about the situation, he would be rather upset. Needless to say, it would not end well. That is, if Light was really telling her the truth and not just lying to her again.
“That’s messed up!” Misa cried out, “why would you even want to see that?!
If Light was serious with his confession, then it means that Misa has no chance with Light...which she seems to casually disregard...either that, or she’s unaware of it...from what I know about her, it’s probably the latter.
“Don’t worry, Misa-chan, I can assure you that there will be no kissing between us,” Keiko heard Light respond, much to Misa’s dismay, “you might not want to hear this right now, but I still have strong feelings for Kagami-san...besides, the police have already established that it was you who sent those tapes before, so you’re lucky to even be here right now. They have every right to keep you imprisoned in my opinion.”
“How could you be so cruel, Light-kun!” Misa pouted, “and anyway, I can help you get over her if you’d just give me a chance! After all, I’m your soulmate!”
“Soul mate? Where do you get this stuff?! You’re the one who said you fell in love with me at first sight even though I clearly told you I had a girlfriend at the time, which was something you obviously ignored!”
“So why would you kiss me if you didn’t even have feelings for me?!” Misa balled up her fists and aimed at Light’s chest.
“Did you forget you’re the one who kissed me?! That kiss costed me my relationship!” Light angrily responded, grabbing Misa’s hands and removing them. The irritation in his voice was unmistakable.
“But Light-kun, I thought that-”
“About all of this love at first sight and soulmate stuff...it happened on May 22nd, didn’t it?” L interrupted, looking over at Misa, who had defensively crossed her arms in front of her chest. The question made Keiko freeze a moment as she realized the full implications of L’s seemingly simple question. She didn’t like where the conversation was headed at all.
“Yeah, so what?”
Keiko bit her lip, if she was in Aoyama on the 22nd then...perhaps Light really is Kira or was Kira at some point...either way, it makes him much more suspicious...and that means, if he was Kira, that the two of them conspired together to trick me…but, is Light guilty or not? As L said, he’s in the gray...
“Why did you choose that day to go to Aoyama, Amane-san?”
Misa sighed, “look, you’re not going to get any information out of me because I don’t remember. I don’t know how I decided to go there, or why I went there, or anything. I just went there, happened to see Light-kun, and fell in love. That’s all that I know. Anyway, since when do I need a reason to hang out in Aoyama?”
“Hmm…” L narrowed his eyes at her, “so, what you’re saying is somehow, when you came back from Aoyama, you knew that you were in love with Light…”
Misa nodded, “yes. And that’s all I know.”
“Tell me,” L leaned forward, his dark eyes looking into Misa’s, “how would you feel if Light Yagami were Kira?”
A dreamy look entered Misa’s face, which made Keiko feel sick to her stomach.
“Oh, that’d be wonderful. I’ve always been grateful to Kira for punishing the man that murdered my family. So, if I were to find out that Light was actually Kira, that’d be a dream come true. If possible, that’d make me love him more!”
“Wouldn’t you be afraid? It is Kira, a mass murderer, that we are talking about here. What if he tried to kill you?”
“Light-kun being Kira wouldn’t be scary at all! I’m a supporter of Kira, so why would he kill me? If anything, I’d try to be helpful to Kira,” Misa responded.
While Keiko knew where the conversation was headed, it still slightly hurt to hear the words spoken out loud. Misa had basically admitted everything without even knowing it, I suppose that settles that...if my ex-boyfriend was or is still Kira, then it’s clear that Misa was the Second Kira...which I was oblivious too...
“While I’m sure that’s very generous of you, I definitely don’t think that Kira needs your help. Based off of what you’ve told me, and the other evidence sitting against you, it’s becoming quite painfully obvious to me that you are the Second Kira.”
“But I’m not the Second Kira!” Misa cried out, “why won’t you believe me?!”
Are you seriously asking that right now?
L, despite Misa’s pained outcry, continued on, “anyway, for the time being, you will remain under surveillance. For the most part, your life will return to normal, but from now on, for all private and work related purposes, Matsuda-san will be accompanying you as your new manager. And Kagami-san will be accompanying you as well from time to time as an assistant. But, please for their safety, only refer to them as Matsui-san and Kinomoto-san.”
Matsuda gave a small but friendly wave in Misa’s direction, “hi, Misa Misa-chan.”
W-what?! How long as he kept this up his sleeve?! Is this some sort of punishment for pushing him to release Light and Misa? And why is Matsuda being so friendly towards her after she just admitted all of that?!
Meanwhile, Keiko narrowed her eyes at the detective, which he pointedly ignored, “your agency has been paid to keep quiet about this. So, please, don’t blow their cover.”
Misa’s face scrunched up, “do I seriously have to deal with Light-kun’s annoying ex and this weirdo?!”
She’s unhappy about dealing with me?! How does she think I feel? L didn’t even discuss this with me! Was he planning on doing this all along?
“Weirdo?!” Matsuda’s voice broke through her thoughts. He seemed a little hurt at Misa’s comment,  “how am I a weirdo, Misa Misa-chan? Is it the tie? I can change it if you’d like.”
“I think I’ve heard more than enough of all this relationship drama and Misa-Misa crap!” Aizawa interjected, balling up his fists, “in case you’ve forgotten, there’s an investigation going on here! I think I speak for everyone here when I say I want to get back to work. We’re wasting time right now.”
“S-sorry, Aizawa-san,” Matsuda said, the color draining from his face.
“It’s fine...just please tone it down in the future. And, anyway, I think I figured out what the main problem is...Amane-san,” Aizawa pointed in Misa’s direction, “I think it’s about time for you to to leave. I’ll escort you to your room. Matsuda-san, get the door for me, would ya.”
Matsuda scrambled towards the door, leaving it open for Aizawa.
“Wha-but why?” Misa pouted as Aizawa took hold of her arm and directed her towards the door. Seeing no other option, she relented, “fine, but Light-kun, you owe me a date! Just give me a chance, okay?”
How could she even say that with me standing right here? Does she really have no conscience? Ugh, I can’t believe at one point I thought she was my friend, even if it was for a short period of time…
With that, the door closed, leaving Keiko alone with her ex-boyfriend and the world’s greatest detective.
L’s POV:
Once Misa had officially left the room, L decided it was time to direct his attention toward Light, “So, Light-kun, have you thought about giving Misa Amane a chance? Or are your feelings for Keiko too strong?”
He studied Light carefully, knowing Light, if he was serious about his confession to Keiko last night then he won’t even consider it...but it’s still also likely that he wasn’t serious, and it was all just an act...either way, Light has to know that, given Misa’s affections toward him, if he were to get close to Misa, it might be beneficial to the investigation.
“As I said before, it’s all one-sided. I don’t have any romantic feelings whatsoever toward Misa…” Light replied bitterly. “Ryuzaki-san, did you perhaps forget about the part when I said earlier that she completely ruined my relationship?”
“Yes, so you’ve said. However, what I’m curious about is...would you at least consider pretending to be serious about Misa Amane? If that’s alright with Kagami-san, that is…” L trailed off a moment, sneaking a glance at the girl, who said nothing. However, her body language told him that she was feeling uncomfortable with the current situation.
Of course...if Keiko still holds feelings for Light, however small they may be, then Light doing this in order to gain information would hurt her. However, at the moment it’s still unclear to me at the moment how strong her emotions are towards Light. Any progress she made during his confinement could be lost if she’s not careful around him.
“You don’t mean-” Light started to say, and L cut him off before he could finish.
“Listen, it would be for the sake of the investigation. You see, there are two things that I know for sure. The first thing being that she pretty much admitted to being the Second Kira, and the second thing being that she’s hopelessly in love with you. It’s clear, given her actions, that she’s infatuated with you. She went so far as to kiss you knowing full well that you had a girlfriend, whom she considered to be her ‘friend’ at the time. It looks to me as if her love knows no bounds. In fact, I’d be willing to bet she’d do anything for you,” L finished.
“You’re serious, aren’t you?” Light narrowed his eyes at the detective, “so, you’re saying you want me to pretend to be intimate with her in order to gain information about the Second Kira?”
“Yes,” L said simply, “I think that you’re capable of doing it without arousing her suspicions. Not to mention, it’s clear that Amane-san might be a valuable source of information for us, if she is Kira, at least.”
“Ryuzaki-san, as much as I want to help you, and as important as the investigation is...well, I can’t manipulate a woman’s feelings like that,” Light took a breath before continuing on, “please try to understand that, to me, exploiting another human being’s feelings like that for personal gain is unforgivable. I would never even consider stooping that low.”
It’s unforgivable, eh? That’s what you say, but if you’re really Kira, then you’re being a hypocrite right now, Light Yagami. You clearly manipulated Keiko into falling for you just because, if she fell for you, she would defend you against my accusations of you being Kira...is this just an act, or do you really mean what you’re telling me? It’s as if you’re acting like a completely different person now.
“I see,” the detective replied, “I suppose you’re right, using Misa would be wrong…”
But, if you’re really Kira, then using Keiko was also wrong.
L watched as Light ran a hand through his hair, looking over in Keiko’s direction, “exactly, Ryuzaki-san, besides…even if she won’t take me back, Keiko-chan is the one that I love. That being said, I can’t believe Misa went as far as she did in order to hurt Keiko and win me over. I can’t forget that she single handedly ruined my relationship.”
Hm...from what I’ve learned recently, it almost appears as if Misa Amane really was fully responsible for the fallout between Light and Keiko. His claim that Misa kissed him without his permission seems to be holding true, meaning that Light really wasn’t willing to cheat on his girlfriend…and without solid evidence to convict Light of being Kira, then...well, it appears that Keiko would have no reason not to eventually give him a second chance at this rate…unfortunately. And their kiss earlier today...well, it provides proof for my theory that Keiko’s feelings for me might be only temporary…
At that thought, a pang ran through him.
Is this what jealousy feels like? No, wait…I can’t afford to be jealous…
Although he would never admit it, the sight of seeing Light and Keiko kissing earlier that day hadn’t left his mind, and he wasn’t sure if it ever would. The detective also still did not trust Light Yagami, not one bit. However, he couldn’t say the same for Keiko. Her feelings for Light, while subdued, still appeared to be somewhat lingering. He needed to figure out for sure what she was thinking and how she was feeling.
While I can’t afford to be jealous...would it be...wrong of me...to hope that any feelings Keiko might have for me lingers? Is it wrong of me to hope that she won’t take him back? Is it wrong of me not to want her to get hurt again…?
Keiko’s POV:
Is Light being serious right now? He says that he loves me, and that he would never use Misa because it’s wrong to use people...but yet...if we find evidence that proves he’s Kira then...Keiko bit her lip, her heart sinking in her chest, then that means he’s not only a hypocrite but he never really loved me in the first place…and that he was attempting to lie to me once again. If that’s true then I’m at risk of falling into his trap…
Keiko looked over at her ex-boyfriend, who gave her an earnest smile in return, however...he seems genuine. If he really is being genuine then that means he meant what he said; he really is in love with me and wants me back...however, while a small part of me still misses Light, it looks like it’s more trouble than it’s worth. I definitely don’t want to face Misa’s wrath…that and...despite my lingering feelings for Light, I’m not even sure if I want to take him back because...because I still can’t forget about what happened between-
The sound of L’s voice broke through her thoughts, “speaking of...what do you think about the current situation, Kagami-san? Is there anything you’d like to say?”
Keiko, who had been studying her ex-boyfriend, looked over the detective. As always, those dark eyes of his gave no hint as what he was thinking or how he was feeling. She gave an uncomfortable cough, suddenly feeling very self-conscious.
Did he somehow realize I was just thinking about him…?
“I, uh...well…” she trailed off. To say that she was frustrated and confused would be an understatement. She supposed she should have been used to the feeling by now but for every step she had taken forward, she had taken three steps back.
Or so she felt.
Either way, she wasn’t sure how to respond. All she could focus on was the fact that she could slowly feel her cheeks becoming tinged with pink the longer L stared at her, and that she was powerless to stop it.
Even though kissing me was apparently a ‘mistake’...I can’t get him off my mind…and the way he complimented me...if he really meant it…then could he possibly care about me? But…if he really cared about me, then why would kissing me be a mistake? Ugh, I’m getting nowhere, it’s like I’m going in circles… although, that being said, I supposed if he truly cared about me, he wouldn’t have stuck me partially in charge of Misa...I suppose it shouldn’t be too bad if Matusda’s going to be there as well but still, how could he just do that to me without asking first?! I’ll have to confront L about that later...though I suppose Light will be there to hear that conversation as well, given the current situation…lovely.
“Perhaps we shouldn’t be putting her on the spot like that, Ryuzaki-san,” Light said, breaking the silence.
You know, for the first time in a while, I can say I agree with you, Light, Keiko thought.
“I suppose you’re right,” L responded, his gaze shifting towards Light once more, “anyway, there’s an announcement I’d like to make. An announcement regarding the new location of the Task Force headquarters…Light-kun, could you please get a hold of your father?”
Light nodded, “sure.”
“Wonderful,” L replied, “and I’ll have Watari inform the others to meet back here.”
/short timeskip/
Keiko’s POV:
“Now that everyone’s here, I have an announcement to make,” L started, looking around the hotel room. He was standing, though slightly hunched, in the center of the room, “given the circumstances of the case, security is a top priority. So, I arranged for a new facility to be made. Construction started soon after first met up with Yagami-san and the others. It’s twenty-three floors above ground, and two below. And, although it’s impossible to see it from the outside, there are two helicopters hidden on the roof.”
With that being said, L opened his laptop sitting on the table below him, clicking on the photo. Keiko was astonished at what she was seeing, and she was sure that she wasn’t the only one feeling that way.
“Wow, that’s amazing, Ryuzaki-san,” Light commented.
“Ideally, I would like everyone to spend as much time here as possible to work on the case, so there’s room for everyone to stay overnight, if need be. And, in the case that the investigation team grows, we can accomodate more people. Now, I was thinking that Kagami-san and Amane-san could share their own floor…”
At that, Keiko crossed her arms, not believing what she was hearing. The detective looked over in her direction, “yes, Kagami-san? What is it?”
Keiko raised an eyebrow, “are you seriously asking me that right now?”
She hadn’t wanted to have this conversation in front of the others, but she supposed she couldn’t hold in her discontent any longer regarding Misa Amane.
“First, you volunteer me, without my permission might I add, to be in charge of Amane-san when she has work-related engagements, and now this! All that space and you want me to share a floor with her?!” Keiko huffed. She knew she sounded bitter, but honestly, she was. It wasn’t fair that L was doing this to her.
“I think you’re misunderstanding, Kagami-san,” L replied, his voice level. “The reason I want you to be around Amane-san is because I trust you. Amane-san, however, I don’t trust. Therefore, if need be, you can be closeby and keep an eye on her. However, if you’re truly that opposed to the idea, then I suppose other arrangements can be made…”
If he trusts me then that’s a good thing right? I’m not happy about the circumstances, however, but...I suppose I won’t have to be around Amane-san all the time…maybe I shouldn’t even be complaining, considering that Light and L are literally chained together for the foreseeable future.
Keiko sighed, “no, it’s alright...I suppose I can deal with it.”
L gave a slight nod, “alright, it’s settled then.” He lifted his arm a little, which rattled the chains connecting him to Light, “also, I suppose it’s clear that, given the current situation, Light and I will be sharing a floor as well.”
“This is truly impressive,” Light commented, “but...to go to such lengths…”
“As you can see, it is my intention to solve this case, no matter what it takes,” L announced. He looked around the room, meeting Keiko’s eyes for a moment. Although it was only a brief interaction, it got her heart pumping slightly faster.
“I’m right there with you,” Light replied, “we need to solve this case, no matter what or how long it takes.”
“You know, if you’re serious about what you just said, you should try to get close to Amane-san…” L murmured. Thanks to his monotone, Keiko couldn’t quite decipher if he was really being serious or not.
“I already told you, I can’t do that,” Light cast a wary look in the detective’s direction, “that goes against my principles. Not only that, but I still have rather strong feelings for Kagami-san…to be honest, though I don’t know how she feels about this, I want her back...”
Is he serious right now? Well, I suppose I never gave him a proper answer the other night...well, even though a part of me misses him, I don’t know for sure whether or not Light is or was Kira and if he truly has feelings for me or not...and when I consider how I feel about L, and how I can’t stop thinking about what happened between us...getting back together with Light doesn’t seem like the best idea.
“Oh, right, you already said that,” L muttered quietly, “hmm...what a shame.”
“Light-kun,” Matsuda looked between Keiko and Light, his eyes lighting up, “are you serious? Keiko-chan, what do you think about that? It’d be great if you two got back together!”
“Matsuda-san,” Keiko sharply inhaled, “please don’t get too excited.”
A sudden cough from the back of the room caught everyone’s attention. Aizawa.
“Yes, Aizawa-san. Is there something you wish to say?” L prompted.
“Uh...oh, it’s nothing...I’m just feeling very motivated. Let’s all solve this together, Ryuzaki-san, chief, Light-san, and Kagami-san…let’s bring Kira together,” Aizawa responded, nodding at each and every one of them individually as he named them off.
Matsuda gave a nervous laugh, “uh, excuse me...but I couldn’t help but to notice that you missed my name…”
Keiko gave a short laugh, which relieved some of the tension she had built up from earlier, “gee, I wonder why, Matsuda-san.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Matsuda questioned, looking at Keiko with a worried expression on his face.
“It’s nothing,” Keiko replied, giving a her hand a small wave, “don’t worry about it.”
Don’t worry about it...if only I could take my own advice...and yet, here I am, overanalyzing everything.

Who Said Death Was Easy? [Death Note] Chapter Thirty
Chapter Thirty: Frustration
Day 8 of Surveillance
Keiko’s POV:
Keiko gave an exasperated sigh as she recalled her little conversation the other night with the world’s greatest detective. She thought a more appropriate name for him would be the world’s most frustrating detective. After all, he always managed to somehow get under her skin. Even worse, his haunting words from the other night had yet to leave her mind. Actually, no matter what, she couldn’t get them out. It was as though his words were stuck on an almost endless loop inside her head.
“If you have no intention of leaving, then face the truth; Light Yagami is Kira, and he’s been stringing you along all this time.”
Was there really any truth to L’s words? Unfortunately, Keiko had to say yes. It appeared that she could no longer ignore the glaringly obvious fact that Light Yagami was probably, no...it appeared that that he was more than most likely Kira, the worst mass murderer that the world had ever seen.
Keiko had been thinking about the detective’s words all night. Now that Light was so close to being convicted of Kira, it made her sick to her stomach thinking of how easily manipulated by him she had been. She had fallen right into his dangerous trap countless times. He had reeled her in, played her a fool.
I am a fool...aren’t I? If my ex-boyfriend really is Kira, then I can’t deny that. I trusted him. I played right into his hands. He got me right where he wanted me…not only did he toy with my emotions, he controlled them.
Keiko shivered, despite the fact that she was wearing a rather warm wool sweater.
No...I let him control me.
Look back at her history with him, Keiko deduced that things with Light Yagami officially started after she had ran into him at the convenience store on that fateful night. That was the start of their friendship, the start of their soon to be romantic relationship. Before then, they had only been rank one and rank two in school, classmates that weren’t particularly close but were still civil to one another.
The fact that the man on the motorcycle, who had been leering and chasing a woman only moments before, had died was now way too suspicious for her to overlook. It was especially suspicious when considering right after that night heart attack victims became more and more common. Keiko hadn’t really thought much about the night at the convenience store, mostly because she just wanted to block it out. It wasn’t like she wanted to remember watching a man die, at least with the bus jacking incident she had looked away when it happened. Keiko shifted slightly on the bed she was sitting on, crossing her arms in front of her chest defensively as she thought back on the night she had run into him.
And, to think, Light had the audacity to walk me home that night!
Looking back also made her realize that she had once used Light Yagami as well. Keiko shuddered. She was thinking that, because she had kissed him that day to get simple revenge on her ex-boyfriend, she had also invited him to use her in return.
If I had never kissed Light Yagami that day, I probably wouldn’t even be in this mess right now...although, now that I think about it, out of all the girls in our class, I was probably the one closest to his type. After all, he and I were the top two students in the grade...meaning that he probably would have asked me out anyway, so perhaps there really was no way to avoid this fate. Well, even if I could have avoided it…it’s useless now. What’s done is done, unfortunately…
Light Yagami had shamelessly used her, not once, not twice, but multiple times. He had used her for months. There was no going back now.
Keiko thought about her first attempt at a date with Light Yagami, and the bus jacking that had gone along with it.
The bus jacking was no mere accident...he had used that bus jacking in order to retrieve that innocent FBI agent’s name. He had then tortured him to somehow get everyone else’s name and face, only to dispose of them all in the end…twelve innocent lives were lost thanks to him. Twelve, and there could have been more that I don’t even know about. After all, L didn’t recruit me for the investigation right away. He waited a while first.
Keiko let out a soft sigh, her mind was now running through all of the other times she had been with Light Yagami. There had been quite a few study dates to make up for their lack of an official first date. Those study dates had easily turned into kissing sessions that had left her slowly wanting even more of him. However, thinking back on that now only made Keiko feel dirty, both physically and emotionally.
After all, those study sessions had paved the way for Light to ask her to officially be his girlfriend. Or, rather, to officially be his puppet, and his asking her out had subsequently led Keiko to fall for him.
And I can’t believe that he used me as a cover up that whole time...how cruel. Once I fell for him, there was no going back. I was lost, no matter how many times L tried to warn me. I didn’t listen....what a fool. Had any of it been real? Did Light really feel anything for me? I suppose it’s possible, but if he’s Kira, then I highly doubt it. As L said, he had to have been just stringing me along. There’s no way that his love for me was real. In fact, now that I think about it, the two of us never said those three little words, ‘I love you’ to one another...
Her stomach, which already had been in knots for a while, gave a sudden lurch. She was seriously worried for a moment that she would actually vomit. Keiko covered her mouth, drawing in a deep and slow breath to help her recover.
It was then that another thought struck her. A thought that she had tucked away in the depths of her brain for a while. At the time, she had deemed it unimportant. In fact, it probably was unimportant, but still, she had to be certain. Keiko didn’t want to be fooled any longer, and she wanted to investigate everything having to do with Light Yagami.
She reached into the pockets of her sweatpants, digging around for her cell phone. Aside from his dad, no one from the Yagami family knew that Keiko and Light had broken up. Light’s father had told Keiko it was because Light didn’t want to raise any more questions, because to him, being interrogated by L and the rest of the Task Force was enough.
Keiko figured that, since his family thought that the two of them were still together, it wouldn’t be weird for her to text his little sister. However, she knew she had to be crafty in order to get the details she wanted out of Sayu Yagami. Luckily it didn’t take Keiko long to think of a plan.
To: Sayu-chan:3
From: Keiko Kagami
Hi, Sayu-chan! It’s Keiko. I was wondering...do you remember the name of the girl that Light-kun was tutoring a while ago? He and I need to fill out applications in order to take a certain class in our study abroad program, and on the application we have to include the names of all people we tutored. But…Light doesn’t remember her name and his phone is dead, so he can’t text you himself.
Okay, Keiko had to admit that her plan perhaps wasn’t the greatest, but it was the best that she could come up with on such short notice. The fact that Light Yagami had a girl come over so soon after the two had met Misa Amane was now suspicious to Keiko. At the time, she hadn’t thought much of it, but looking back, Keiko had a strong suspicion that the girl had been Misa. If Light was Kira, then that would for sure meant that Misa Amane was the Second Kira, and Light hadn’t been tutoring her, but been conspiring with her in secret.
Keiko’s leg bounced in anticipation. Considering the fact that Sayu Yagami was glued to her phone, she figured it wouldn’t take long for her to respond, but at the moment, every moment felt like hours.
Finally, after a long two minutes passed, Keiko received her response. A response that made her heart skip a beat and her blood run cold.
To: Keiko Kagami
From: Sayu-chan:3
Oh, hi, Keiko-chan! It’s been boring here without you and Light around! I can’t believe I’m saying this but I miss you both! (don’t tell my brother I said that though, I’d never live that down!) Anyway, that girl looked like she stepped out of an old horror movie, so of course I remember her name! Her name was Misa Amane. Is there anything else you have to ask me for Light’s application? I hope he gets into that class, he deserves it!
The phone trembled in Keiko’s hands, and she fought hard to catch her breath. She felt like the wind had just been knocked out of her. Her fingers struggled to type up a proper response to Sayu’s question.
To: Sayu-chan:3
From: Keiko Kagami
No, Sayu-chan, all Light needed to know for the application was her name, so there are no further questions…thank you, you were a big help.
Keiko’s phone beeped yet again a moment later, signaling that Sayu had responded, but she didn’t bother to open it up. She didn’t even think she had the strength to open up the text message. In fact, what little strength she had left had dwindled away as soon as she read Sayu’s text message. The name Sayu had given her, Misa Amane, had more than confirmed her suspicions. She set her cell phone back into her pocket.
This could seriously mean that Light Yagami is Kira...and that Misa Amane is his Second Kira....if that’s true, then the two of them are the worst mass murderers that the world’s ever seen…and I was blind to that fact the whole entire time…
Unfortunately, her little discovery had caused her to lose her composure for good. Keiko was soon unable to stop the sobs from wracking her body.
If it’s true then I can’t believe I fell for it...L was right, I really am naive.
She was glad that she was hiding out in the spare bedroom of L’s hotel suite, as she was sure that she looked like an absolute wreck. There were tears streaming down her face and circles starting to develop under her eyes due to increased lack of sleep.
Not only that, but she had also started to pay less attention to her clothing choices since moving into the hotel, opting for comfort rather than fashion. She figured her current clothing choice, an oversized wool sweater paired with sweatpants, probably only made her look like worse.
“Keiko-chan!”
The sound of Matsuda’s voice made Keiko freeze. There was no way she wanted him to see her like this. Hell, she didn’t want anyone to see her like this. She hated people seeing her cry. The fact that Matsuda had seen her cry when she was at her father’s grave unnerved her...and here he was about to witness her crying yet again!
Keiko sighed, quickly attempting to pat her wet face dry. She knew it was in vain, because one look at her puffy eyes would lead Matsuda to conclude that she had been crying, but she had to do something in order to try and regain her dignity.
She could hear Matsuda’s footsteps getting louder and louder, and soon, she knew that he had entered the spare room.
“K-Keiko-chan,” she heard Matsuda quietly whisper. “You’re thinking about Light-kun, aren’t you?”
Keiko meekly lifted her head up to face the young dark haired policeman at the mention of Light’s name. She could see the worry written in his eyes as he stepped forward and slowly sat down on the bed next to her. His concerned gaze made her feel even more vulnerable.
She didn’t have the strength to speak, so she just nodded her head, and attempted to keep up her cool composure.
It didn’t last very long. Matsuda mentioning Light’s name out loud had only made her feel even more upset, and she was unable to stop a lone tear from escaping her eye. Unfortunately for her, that tear had caused the formation of even more tears, and soon, she was full on crying once again.
Keiko closed her eyes, thinking that it would somehow stop the tears from flowing down her face. Her heart was hammering away in her chest.
Damn it! I keep letting myself get so emotional.
Her eyes snapped open as soon as she felt Matsuda wrap his arms around her back, bringing her up to his chest so that he could envelop her in an awkward hug.
What the…? Oh...he’s probably trying to comfort me...
Normally, she would have brushed her tears back, she would have gently pushed away from his touch. However, this time Keiko didn’t have the will to somehow force a smile onto her face. She didn’t even have the strength to move or be prideful and attempt to save face. It was far too late for any of that.
Seeing no reason to fight her emotions, she let herself relax in Matsuda’s arms, softly continuing to cry as he awkwardly patted her back in an effort to calm her down. She knew that Matsuda wasn’t a threat to her, the young policeman had quickly become a friendly face on the task force. While he sometimes wasn’t the brightest, he was dependable. He was a friend that she knew she could trust.
Keiko wasn’t sure how much time had passed. After all, she felt like once her tears started, they would never stop flowing. However, unbeknownst to them, their little show had an audience.
L’s POV:
Hmm...what’s taking him so long? While he’s not the brightest, it’s not like Matsuda-san to dawdle on a task like this...whenever I ask him to do me a favor, he usually tries to impress me by getting it done rather quickly...it really shouldn’t be taking him this long to go and wake up Keiko though.
L let out a deep sigh, deciding that he had, once again, had enough of waiting for Matsuda to do his job. He stood up from his chair, walking through the living room towards the spare bedroom, which was where Keiko had ventured off to a couple hours ago to go take a ‘quick’ nap.
If Matsuda’s going to just take his sweet time, I might as well go and get Keiko myself. After all, Light’s been in confinement for over a week now...and I’d really like to know what she’s thinking now about the situation. She spent all of this time thinking that her boyfriend couldn’t be Kira, no, even after they broke up, she still refused to believe it. But now, I’m getting all the proof I need to convict him.
The detective stopped dead in his tracks as soon as he heard light sobs emitting from the direction of the spare bedroom.
Well, I suppose I now have my answer...I have to admit, I’m not that surprised. It was only a matter of time before her emotions got to her.
The sobs, though slightly muffled, got a little louder as he took a couple steps forward. He peered into the room from the doorway. He saw Keiko sitting on the bed. She was huddled towards Matsuda, who was gently patting her back.
So that’s what he’s been up to.
L had been feeling fine before, but all of the sudden, his heart gave a slight pang. If he hadn’t locked Light and Misa up eight days ago, he would have sworn that it was either Kira or the Second Kira finally attempting to kill him.
If this isn’t a heart attack then what is this?
The detective brought his thumb up to his mouth, staring at the two sitting on the bed. He knew there was another possible explanation for the way he was now feeling, but he refused to accept it.
I don’t allow myself to feel such things, as they just get in the way...so it can’t be...there’s just no way…is there?
Day 9 of Surveillance
Light’s POV:
“I-I just can’t take it anymore!” Ryuk pitifully groaned, “I’m serious, you know! I’m really about to reach my limit over here! I swear...if...if I don’t get an apple soon...there’s no telling what’ll happen to me!”
Light couldn’t see him from where he was sitting on his bed, but he was sure that the shinigami was contorting his body into all sorts of weird shapes once again.
He raised an eyebrow, a determined look on his face, and ignored the shinigami’s dramatic behavior. It had now been nine days since the start of his confinement. He was sure that L would attempt to interrogate him once more. After all, he was only giving him more proof of his guilt.
Well, not for too much longer, L...soon you’ll see that I’m innocent. Once that happens, you’ll have no choice but to release me.
“Light-kun,” L’s voice came in over the loudspeaker in the corner, interrupting him from his thoughts, “you’ve only been in there for a little over a week, but I’m sure it can’t be easy for you...are you feeling alright?”
The corner’s of Light’s mouth slightly curved upwards into a smirk. He was glad that L currently was unable to see his face because of the angle he was sitting at.
I’m feeling great, L, heh… and hmm...now that I think about it, I’ve come pretty far...it’s probably about time to put part two of my plan into action!
“Yeah, I’m sure I probably don’t look so good...but it’s this useless pride of mine that’s keeping me in here…” Light started, finally looking up in the direction of the camera, “...I suppose I’ll have to just try to…get rid of it!”
“H-huh?” Ryuk questioned, taking a moment to fully process Light’s words. He peered over at the light brown haired human sitting on the bed, “o-oh, yeah. I gotcha, hyuk. Well, looks like I’ll be able to get some more apples soon. That being said, I’ll see you for now, Light Yagami. It’s been fun…”
With that, Ryuk waved his hand in the air over Light’s head, watching as Light closed his eyes, probably waiting for the memories of the death note to fade. Once the shinigami was finished, he flapped his wings, and disappeared from the cell.
Light opened his eyes once more, looking around his cell and blinking slowly. For some reason, he felt a little disoriented. He gave a little sigh of frustration, figuring that it was probably because he was starting to feel the effects of being locked up for so long.
Dammit, why am I even doing this?! It’s pointless, I don’t belong in here; I’m not Kira, I know that! We’re only wasting precious investigation time!
“Ryuzaki-san,” Light started, staring up at the camera once more. His voice was pleading, “I realize that I was the one pushing for confinement in the first place, and I even asked you to put me in here...but I just realized something important! This whole thing is completely pointless because I’m not Kira! You have to get me out of here!”
L’s POV:
L could hear the gasps from the members of the task force behind him, notably Mogi and Matsuda. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Keiko shifting slightly in her chair, she clearly was looking rather uncomfortable with the current situation. He figured she was probably trying to get a grip on her emotions.
The detective, however, didn’t let their reactions distract him. Instead, he narrowed his eyes at the suspect sitting in the cell on the monitor in front of him.
“I’m afraid I can’t do that, Light-kun,” L responded, “if you recall, I promised you that, no matter what you did or said, I wouldn’t let you out until I was personally convinced that you are not Kira.”
“Please, Ryuzaki-san!” Light responded, desperation in his voice, “I wasn’t thinking clearly! Besides, do you honestly think that a serial killer like Kira could commit those crimes without being aware of them?! If I have no memory of killing anyone then it should be pretty clear that I’m not him!”
L let out a soft sigh, “while I’ve never been able to accept this idea that Kira has been killing without self awareness all this time, that doesn’t change the fact that all of the evidence points to you as being Kira...and, since we imprisoned you, Kira hasn’t committed a single murder.”
“Listen, just hear me out...I swear to you that I’m not lying!” Light’s eyes got huge as he looked into the camera, “do these eyes look guilty to you?! You have to believe me; I’m not Kira! I...I must have been framed...that’s the only explanation for this!”
L carefully studied Light’s brown eyes, looking for anything suspicious.
What’s wrong with you, Light Yagami? What you’re saying is completely absurd...but, for some reason, it feels real to me...it feels genuine.
“Hurry up, Ryuzaki-san!” Light continued on, “you have to let me out of here! We’re wasting precious time!”
“What the…” the detective heard Keiko mutter beside him. He glanced at her, watching as her face scrunched up a little, “oh Light-kun…”
“This isn’t like Light at all!” Aizawa grumbled, “this doesn’t make any sense to me, he’s contradicting himself...not only that, he’s getting emotional.”
“I’m sure anyone would be emotional in that condition,” Matsuda responded, “but we can’t release him now, not with the murders suddenly stopping...at this point, it doesn’t matter what he says, even I understand that much.”
Aizawa chuckled darkly, “yeah...I don’t care what anyone else says, as far as I’m concerned, we have all the proof we need to convict him...Light Yagami is Kira, that’s the end of it.”
“Hmm,” L rested his thumb by his mouth, “at this rate, Aizawa-san is right...if things continue on like this, that’s the only conclusion that we can come to...but I suppose that it’s still a little too early to tell for sure...we’ll have to just continue watching him for the time being.”
/timeskip/
Keiko’s POV:
Keiko ran her fingers through her hair and let out a soft sigh, staring at the monitors in front of her. All the other members of the task force had called it a night and left, leaving Keiko and L alone in the hotel room.
It appeared that Light had calmed down from his outburst earlier, as he had actually fallen asleep on the bed. She watched the rise and fall of his chest, thinking over his sudden pleading from earlier on that day.
“Listen, just hear me out...I swear to you that I’m not lying! Do these eyes look guilty to you?! You have to believe me; I’m not Kira! I...I must have been framed...that’s the only explanation for this!”
Given the evidence against him, Light’s words make no sense...however, he seemed genuine...and for a moment, it was like I had a glimpse of my ex-boyfriend. Of course, I obviously don’t want to believe that he was only fooling me again, but…something about it seemed…so real.
Keiko’s heart gave a lurch in her chest.
He really did look innocent...did I make a mistake in choosing to no longer trust him? Perhaps I gave up my faith in him too quickly...
“Keiko-chan.”
She looked up, watching as the detective scooted his chair closer to hers, closing the gap between the two of them.
“Y-yes?” Keiko responded, tucking a strand of hair behind her ears. She had been hoping that L would leave her alone for the night, but after seeing him stare her down, she figured that wouldn’t be the case.
He’s going to rile me up again somehow, isn’t he…?
Her suspicions were confirmed as soon as L opened his mouth to speak once more. His dark eyes were piercing hers, “I know what you’re thinking...but you shouldn’t let his little act fool you…”
“Can you really be sure that’s it’s just an act?” Keiko retorted, crossing her arms at him. She honestly wasn’t sure herself but she didn’t like the way L was making her feel. He had a way of exposing her true emotions, of making her feel vulnerable, “I mean, you saw the look in his eyes…do you really know for sure he’s guilty? It could be as he says.”
The corners of the detective’s mouth lifted slightly, and she felt as though he were taunting her somehow. She supposed he was, it was what he seemed to do best.
“Hmm. Right now, I can’t be too sure but the evidence against him is rather compelling...however…that's not my point, I’m more concerned about you at the moment,” L leaned forward in his chair so that he was face to face with her. He was close, so close that Keiko could feel his warm break on her cheek as he spoke, “are you really sure that you want to trust Light Yagami again? After all, whether he meant to or not, he already broke your heart once before…do you really want to make that twice?”
“R-Ryuzaki-san,” Keiko stuttered out, unable to properly speak. All she could focus on was L’s close proximity to her. His face was getting ever so close to her own, and they were now only mere inches apart from one another. Keiko could feel her heart pounding like crazy in her chest, she felt like she was about to lose control, and she knew she had to get away from him. And quickly, otherwise there was no telling what she’d do. There was no way that Keiko could allow herself to get lost in the detective’s eyes.
She attempted to turn her head to look away from him, but he gently placed his hand on her chin to stop her.
“I guess what I’m getting at, Keiko-chan, is...will you let your feelings for Light-kun get in the way of things again? Or will you finally be strong enough to get over him?”
Before Keiko could reply, or even register what was going on, she felt L’s lips brush over her cheek, teasing her skin ever so slightly. He was gentle, maybe even a little hesitant. Meanwhile, Keiko’s heart now felt like it was about to leap out her chest at his touch, and her brain was going haywire.
The detective’s lips went even lower, tickling her skin as they slowly neared her own lips. The closer he got, the more her body trembled, causing all thoughts of her ex-boyfriend to leave her mind. All she could think about was the fact that L’s lips were dangerously close to meeting her own, but somehow the prospect of a kiss didn’t quite alarm her.
In fact, she had to admit, in that moment, a part of her was almost curious as to how it would feel to kiss the world’s greatest detective. It would have been a nice distraction from reality, and she would be lying to herself if she said that L wasn’t in any way attractive. He was vastly different from Light, yes. L was odd, blunt to a fault, and had a thing for sweets.
However, there was just something about him that drew her in. A part of her wanted a taste, just to see what it would be like. Besides, it wasn't like a kiss would hurt her. She was already heartbroken from Light.
Keiko finally gave in, letting him take control. Her eyes fluttered closed, waiting in anticipation.
“H-hello?” the sudden voice from the doorway of the hotel room caused Keiko’s eyes to snap open. She pushed the detective away from her, and she could feel her face flaming as Matsuda stepped into the hotel room.
“I forgot my…” the words died on the young police man’s lips. Keiko could only imagine how she and L looked to him. Her face was a deep shade of crimson and, because of the sudden intrusion, the detective’s eyes went wide. Although Matsuda had no way of knowing what had been going on, she was still sure that he was sure that he could feel the tension hidden between the two of them.
“I-I forgot my w-watch,” Matsuda finally stammered out after a long moment, reaching out to grab the item from the coffee table. He watched, probably uncomfortable, as both L and Keiko stared at him, “b-but Ryuzaki-san, Kagami-san, what’s going on, did something big happen? Perhaps...did Kira kill again?!”
Keiko awkwardly shook her head as L spoke up beside her, “no. No new criminals have been killed yet...and if you’re sure you have everything, you’re free to go…”
“Oh, alright then,” Matsuda replied, looking as confused as ever. He stood there a moment, glancing between the two of them. It was clear that he was trying to figure out what else, if anything, he could have missed.
“I-I’m, uh, going to go to bed,” Keiko stuttered out. She normally would have stayed with L deep into the night to investigate, but at the moment she was too embarrassed to stay at task force headquarters. The only thing she could focus on was the fact that the great detective had almost kissed her, and she would have let him.
W-what’s wrong with me? There's no way I could like him, after all, I barely know anything about him! So why did I let him get so close to me then? It was almost like I was in a trance. It was almost like...I wanted it to happen...
“Sleeping so soon? What a pity,” L responded.
Keiko didn’t miss the hint of amusement in his voice. She could feel her face flaming again as she  stood up from her chair, heading towards the door that led to her hotel room suite. As she walked, she couldn’t be bothered to force herself to look at either of the guys in the room. Keiko needed to get to her room, and quickly. Not only that, she needed to try and figure out what exactly had just happened between the two of them.
Wait a moment...even if Matsuda hadn’t walked in, would he have really kissed me? Or was that all just an act? With him, there’s no way of knowing for sure...perhaps he just wanted to see how I’d react? ...but it’s not like him to get that close to me, not that close at least! This is all too confusing!
“Have a good night, Keiko-chan!” Matsuda cheerfully called out as she opened the door.
All she could muster back was a short wave in his direction before she closed the door behind her.

Chapter Sixteen:  Ohayo, Misa Misa
Word Count:  4036
Chapter No. 16/36
Notes:  It has been a hot ass minute since I posted a chapter.  And this is why.  The first week I put it off, (and you have to promise not to judge me!) Breath of the Wild had just come out and I’m kind of a big Legend of Zelda fan.  Why I put it off LAST WEEK was because of this.  I was still playing Breath of the Wild, but later that evening, I ended up getting drunk with my brothers and one of them’s girlfriend and my mom and played Cards Against Humanity.  I don’t regret it.  That was a fun night.  But now, it’s time to stop putting it off and I’ll let you read, ok?  If you’re still a little iffy on what happened last time, reread the last chapter.
Chapter Fifteen:  Yes, Mistress
My parents’ room?  I know their bed is massive, but when did I get here?  Even worse, why did I wake up alone?  I could’ve sworn Julian was here, too.  Yeah! We had that talk.  Slumber party proposal.  Sebastian cuddles.  What more could a spastic, little otaku girl like yours truly want?  Julian gave Paul his housekeys and Julian came home with me. If that was the case, where the hell was Julian?
I rolled out of bed and the bright red numbers on the alarm clock nearly blinded me.  Nine in the morning.  Fantastic.  Just a little more sleep.  Was that too much?  Oh well. I’ll live, I guess.  I don’t even remember going to bed last night.  My head’s still fuzzy.  Although, I couldn’t forget last night for as long as I live. Now that I think about it, aren’t certain demon butlers supposed to be here to wake up their young mistress?
Instead of finding said demon, I found a note on the nightstand.  No post-its.  Normal paper. This looked like it came out of one of my good notebooks.  A light mint color.  Some silver border.  Yeah. This came out of one of my notebooks. He didn’t know, but Julian and I would be having words about that later.  My good notebooks usually came from Japan or Korea.  Those little bitches were expensive.  It costs to be kawaii.
 Good morning, beautiful
In the kitchen.  I got a surprise for you.
All my love,
Julian
I think he likes me. I zipped my onesie up some more and stumbled out to the kitchen.  My god…Something smelled like Christmas morning.  The overwhelming cinnamon and nutmeg and fresh coffee.  Just like Christmas morning.  Like when my grandma would bake in excess like she was feeding the entire world.  Either way, I needed to find the source of it.  And I had a feeling deep in the pit of my heart that my boyfriend was the one.
“Well,” Julian chimed, “Ohayo, cutie.  Sleep ok?”
“Like a rock,” I rubbed my eyes, still not entirely sure if a Disney marketplace opened up in my kitchen or not, “Julian, what are you doing?”
“Making breakfast,” he grabbed a pan of cinnamon rolls out of the oven, “If that’s alright with you.”
“Super,” I jumped onto a barstool, “But you realize this is our day off.  You don’t need to be doing any of this.”
“I want to, though,” he defended, “Let me do nice things for you!”
“I’m not going to stop you,” I scanned around the kitchen for the sweet smell emanating from the coffee pot.  I might have had the best sleep I’ve had in years last night, but all the sleep in the world couldn’t take away the half dead feeling I seemed to always have, “By the way, when did we go to bed?”
“You fell asleep in the middle of Dramatical Murder last night,” Julian filled in the gaps, “I carried you to bed and I just got up a couple hours ago.”
“You do understand the concept of a day off, right?” I teased, nuzzling my face in his shoulder blades, “That whole sleeping in, sitting around in your underpants, not having to leave the house, video game and anime binges thing?  That’s a day off.”
“If I remember correctly,” he reminded me, “You and I are taking pictures today.  I should probably make sure my house didn’t burn down last night. God only knows the shenanigans Paul got into.  He better not have touched my Miku-chan…”
“I’m sure everything was fine,” I assumed, “I didn’t hear any sirens when I woke up.”
“We can always call him, right?” Julian got his phone out of his hoody pocket and dialed Paul’s number. While he got back in the oven, his phone hummed from the speaker.
“Morning, princess,” Paul chimed on the other end, “What can I do for you?”
“Get the hookers out, Paul,” Julian told him, “There’s only room for one princess in my house and that’s me.”
“Mother of God,” I rested my head on the island, “What did I get myself into?”
“You knew,” he kissed my forehead, “You knew I wasn’t conventionally normal.  You knew what Paul and I have is special”
“Yet, here we are,” I mumbled into the granite.
 “Good morning, Mimi!” Paul chirped.
“Hi, Paul,” I mustered up as much enthusiasm as I could.  Where did I put my…?
 “Coffee?” Julian assumed.
“Yes, please,” I sighed out. That’s why I don’t kill him.
“Would you like a handful of amphetamines in it, too?” he giggled.
“If it’s not too much to ask for.”
“Wow,” Paul worried, “Are you ok?”
“She just woke up,” Julian answered for me.  And that’s the other reason I don’t kill him, “If you want, Paul, I’m making breakfast.”
“Hell yeah!” he squealed, “I’m down.  Where are you?”
“Mimi’s house,” Julian started drizzling the frosting on the cinnamon rolls the size of my head.  My god, it was mesmerizing, “It’s four blocks down, three houses in.  My car’s out front.  You can’t miss it.  That is ok with you, right, Mimi?”
“Fine,” I allowed, getting off my barstool, “I’ll be back.”
“Where you going?” he pulled me against his chest, “You just got here.”
“Shower,” I submitted, reveling in his embrace, “I’m gross.”
“You’re not gross,” Julian assured me, “You’re perfect.”
“Oh, honey,” I chuckled a bit, “I’m far from perfect.  For now, I’m going to take a shower.”
“Alright, baby,” he let me go, “Paul, call me if you have any problems finding the place.”
“Ten-four!” Paul confirmed, “See you soon!”
 Click.
“That asshole can never say goodbye, can he?” Julian ran his finger over his phone screen.
“Apparently not,” I shook my head, running upstairs.  I really didn’t want to be Misa longer than I had to be.  So, instead, I decided to be something a little simpler and much more intelligent.  Had to be smart to be an alchemist.  Becoming Edward Elric was easy.  Black tank top.  Black jeans. Silver cuff bracelet to simulate his automail and a red cardigan for his coat?  Didn’t get much easier than that.  Except for maybe L, but L was also a simple creature.
The hot water was sorely needed.  Nothing better than a good shower when one was still half asleep with zero coffee in her and had a big day ahead.  If I didn’t have plans with Julian today for our Death Note shoot, I would’ve gone back to sleep.  Oh no! He had to make my kitchen smell like the Pillsbury Doughboy and the Keebler elves had an orgy in there.  I couldn’t say no to that.
I got out of the shower and ran a wet braid down my back.  I didn’t want my hair in my face and I could always straighten it later. I wasn’t out to impress anyone right now anyway.  Not yet. Not until Mimi had gone away from the late morning, early afternoon, and Misa Amane was slowly killing my brain cells. I didn’t have to like her, but I had to admit, girlfriend had a killer sense of style.  No pun intended.  When I got back to the kitchen, Paul had joined Julian at the island.
And I knew Julian was a keeper when he handed me a massive cup of coffee, “Sorry.  We’re short on amphetamines and I don’t have a guy for that. I have a photography guy.  That’s it.”
 “This will do,” I assured.
“And I’m trying to figure out who you are today,” Julian looked me over, “Could you give me a little hint?”
 “When’s my birthday?” I asked.
“Don’t answer it, dude,” Paul warned, “It’s a trap.  Trust me. I’ve been down that route before.”
“It’s not a trap,” Julian promised, seeing right through me, “Do you also have a girlfriend that’s not your girlfriend, but she’s only your mechanic.”
“You know who I am,” I cuddled into his chest.
“I’m confused,” Paul gave us what the fuck face, “What’s that got to do with anything?”
“She’s a casual cosplayer,” Julian explained.
“That’s right,” I squeaked, feeling much more awake, “My hint was asking him when my birthday was. My birthday is October third, a major date in the Fullmetal Alchemist universe.  Therefore, someone was smart and pieced it together that I was Edward Elric.”
“I don’t get it,” Paul scratched his head.
“Sorry, Mimi,” Julian apologized, “I may have neglected to mention that Paul isn’t exactly one of us. He’s not an otaku.  He just takes my pictures for me.  I don’t think he’s ever seen an anime in his life, have you, Paul?”
“Not that I remember,” he thought it over.
“Really, though?” I gasped, “You’re not our level of nerd?”
“Nope,” Paul shook his head, “I’m a gamer, though, for what it’s worth.  Self-proclaimed sci-fi junkie.  Hopeless romantic.  Chocolate connoisseur.  Pisces.”
“Settle down, sport,” Julian stopped him, “My girlfriend, not yours.”
“So,” I got back on my barstool, “Last night.  You don’t understand the significance of what happened?”
“Not a bit!” Paul smiled, “But last night wasn’t for me.”
“I know that much,” I blushed, “Julian, can I ask you something?”
 “Sure, Mimi,” he allowed, “Shoot.”
“What made you pick Sebastian?” I wondered, “Out of all the options I gave you, why did you go with a demon butler?”
“It had been a while since I had been Sebastian,” Julian admitted, “I missed him.  And I could write the post-its better with J. Michael Tatum’s voice in my head instead of Travis Willingham.”
“Mustang was your second choice?” I whined, “I like a man in uniform!  Why didn’t you go for him instead?”
“When I was in your closet the other day,” he went on, “and I had Ciel’s dress in my hand, I wanted to know what you looked like in it.  I know I probably could’ve asked, just like this situation with your underwear, but this seemed like a better idea.”
“I still have to hang that back up,” I remembered, “It’s in a pile on my bedroom floor.  I also have a fan fiction to finish and post sometime this week.  My fans are going to be pissed.  Finicky bunch.”
“I’m sure they’d understand,” Julian comforted, “You had other things to do.  You had work from Monday to Saturday.  You had a photoshoot on Sunday.  Your boyfriend took you out Saturday night.  You’re a busy girl.  How much do you have left for it?”
“I don’t know,” I shrugged, “It could be another couple paragraphs or I could end up having to turn it into a miniseries.  Wouldn’t be the first time I did that.  I have a hard time writing one-shots anymore.”
“I’ve never written fan fiction before,” he kissed my cheek, “If it makes you feel any better.  Maybe we should write one together.”
“No,” I shook my head, “I love you, Julian, but I work alone.  I tried writing with someone once and I couldn’t do it.  I’m too much of a control freak.”
“Well,” he mulled it over, “Since I’m so inexperienced, maybe you being a control freak would be a good thing.”
“No,” I put my foot down, “I refuse to come out of this hating you.  I’m very set in my ways.  I have my system.  I wouldn’t get in the way of that if I were you.”
“Speaking of getting in the way,” Paul chimed in, “When did you want to do this shoot?”
“I have to go get my Light,” Julian spun me around, “And you, young lady, need to go become Misa Misa.”
“Why can’t you be Misa Misa?” I pouted, “We could do a genderbend.”
“Do you have a genderbend for Light?” he asked.
 “No…”
“That’s why you have to be Misa,” Julian grinned, poking my nose, “I’ll be right back.  And you know you’ll have to do it again.”
“Don’t make me do it,” I begged, “If you love me even a little bit, you won’t make me do it.”
“I don’t love you a little bit,” he clarified, “I love you a lot of bit.  And you’re doing the thing.”
I held back any gagging, “I don’t want to.”
“For me?” Julian batted his eyelashes.
 “I hate you,” I growled, “If I had a Death Note…”
“I love you, too,” he beamed, “Paul, you’re coming with me.  You don’t need to be left alone with her when she’s naked and you have your camera. I know how weird you are.”
“I wouldn’t be taking naked shots of her!” Paul promised, “I have a little bit of decency, you know. I’d only do that if she asked me. Or if you asked me with her consent.”
“Thank you!” I squeaked, keeping that in mind.  I never wanted to do naked pictures, but maybe some suggestive shots wouldn’t be a half bad idea for a certain someone down the road.
“We’ll be back,” Julian grabbed Paul and dragged him out of my house.  Meanwhile, I had to do something I knew I was going to love and loathe at the same time.  My IQ was about to drop at least thirty points.
Once Julian and Paul left, I dug through my closet, looking for my Misa Amane cosplay.  And there she was, hanging between my genderbend Ryuk and my Winry Rockbell.  I didn’t want to be Misa.  I’d rather be L and do a yaoi cosplay.  Hell, Julian and I could even be handcuffed like L and Light were.  I had those handcuffs.  But alas.  I was going to be Misa.  I could do it.  I could handle it.  I’d be fine.
I pulled my hair out of my braid and started getting redressed.  I could’ve picked anything for Misa.  She was a model/actress.  I could’ve been that weird angel thing she was in one episode, but instead, I went with her usual stock goth Lolita.  Besides, I can pull off a leather jacket like nobody’s business.  And I could stand to feel badass from time to time.
Alright.  Now that I had her outfit down, I needed to get my hair and makeup right.  I grabbed my tablet and pulled up a reference picture.  Every other cosplayer did the same thing.  Maybe I could just mix some of the looks together.  Misa was a simple creature.  Pale, porcelain skin (which I had in spades).  Big, false eyelashes.  Blood red lips.  Excessive eyeliner.  And I couldn’t be completely Misa without her tiny pigtails.
I gave myself one last glance over in the mirror.  Damn, I hated admitting this, but I made a hell of a Misa.  Leather and black lace suited me.  I looked just like her the first time she met Light.  All I was missing was my own Death Note.  That was on the top shelf of my closet.  I looked super cute!  This was a good idea!  And Death Note was what brought Julian and me together in a way.  If I wouldn’t have quoted Kira, Julian never would’ve known about this.  And I wouldn’t know he was the same.
After a quick spin, I started heading toward Julian’s house.  I’ve only done this once.  Even then, I had no idea what I was doing.  I still had no idea what we were doing.  I’ve never done a photoshoot before.  Even taking selfies made me squirm.  How the hell was I going to manage a semiprofessional photoshoot? Just don’t think of it that way. Something tells me Paul isn’t exactly professional.  He night have been, but I doubt this will be a formal feeling shoot.  Last night wasn’t.  Why should today be any different?
“Julian!” I called from his front door, “Are you ready yet?”
“Just about!” he yelled from his bathroom, “Paul had to run back up to Kansas City.  He wanted to grab more lenses.  He should be back soon.”
“Ok,” I jumped up on the counter, “That’s fine.  I can wait.”
“Wow,” Julian giggled, “Awfully patient for being Misa Misa.
“If you call me Misa Misa one more time today,” I threatened, “I will write your name in my Death Note.”
“Misa Misa’s bitter,” he teased, “I like it.”
“I hate you,” I chuckled a bit to myself.
“I’ve heard otherwise,” Julian pointed out, “Hey, Mimi, could you do me one little favor?”
“What?” I had a feeling I already knew where this was going, “Don’t tell me.  You want me to go full Misa, don’t you?”
 “Please?” he begged.
 “No, Julian.”
“I went full Sebastian for you!” he reminded, “I watched anime porn with you!”
“Dramatical Murder doesn’t get porny in the anime!” I retaliated, “Now, if we were playing through the game, that’d be a different story.  That shows actual pixelated dingle dongle.”
 “But…”
“It’s bad enough I’m practically her doppelganger,” I cringed, “I’m not going full Misa.”
 “Please…?”
 “No!”
“Fine,” he whined, coming out of the bathroom, “Well?  Good? Yeah?”
“Good enough for me,” I got up.  Hot damn, he was a good Light, “What about me?”
“Like Bonnie and Clyde, baby,” Julian gave me a kiss, “But, you know…If Clyde had suppressed feelings for the detective trying to take him down and used Bonnie to kill a whole lot of people.”
“Just like Bonnie and Clyde,” I took his hands, “You really could pass for Light, though.”
 “Better than the Netflix casting?”
I glared a hole through the place where his soul should be, “We don’t talk about the Netflix casting for Death Note.  That’s a sensitive area for me.”
“I hear you there,” Julian agreed, sharing my disdain, “Now…All I want is to enjoy a long life with you in an ideal world.  That’s just how I feel.”
 “What?” This sounded familiar…
“Let’s create a new world together,” Julian smirked, “It’ll be a place with no crime.  Where only kind people live, ok?”
Wat a second…This was the conversation Light and Misa had after Light regained his memories.  I knew what this asshole was trying to do. And as much as I was going to hate myself for it, I was going to indulge him.  If I got into character, I’m sure it’d show up on film, right?  If that was the way I had to justify it in my head, then so be it.”
 “Light…” I spoke softly in Misa’s sandpaper enema voice, “I’m so happy…”
“That’s my girl,” Julian pulled me tight against his chest, “You think I could get a little more Misa out of you before the end of the day?”
“Pushing it, Julian,” I snapped back to being me, “But I’ll think about it.”
 “Yay!”
“Honey!” Paul came in with his bag on his shoulder, “I’m home.”
“How was your day, sweetheart?” Julian asked, sounding like a fifties housewife.  This was my life.  Caught between my boyfriend and his photographer.
“Never better!” he sang, “The stocks are up, the crime rate is down.  All in all, can’t complain.”
“You two are weird,” I opened Julian’s fridge in search of a bottle of water.
“You’re not truly best friends until people start questioning your sexuality,” Julian shot Paul a quick wink, “But you know who I come home to at the end of the day.”
“Excuse me?” I turned it around, “I’ve been coming home to you at the end of the day.”
“True,” he nodded, “But you understand what I’m trying to say.”
Then, Paul let out a high-pitched wolf whistle.  Assuming it’s for me, “Looking good, Mimi…Julian, you are a very lucky man.”
“Avert your eyes,” I demanded, “It’s only for today.  Then, Misa goes back in the closet, never to be let out again.”
“Hey,” Julian wrapped his arms around me, “What if I want you to be Misa again?  Like…Sometime in the near future?”
“Then, I’ll half assed consider it,” I assured, “Until then, we forget this ever happened.”
“These might be the prints that put you on the map,” he figured, “There’s no forgetting that.”
“Hold on,” I stopped him, “What do you mean, put me on the map?”
“I told you I was getting back in the game,” Julian explained, “I’m going to drop your name in the description box.  You and me, remember?  This is a partnership.  We’re going to be that cosplaying power couple and this could be the photoset that gets people to look at you.”
“Um,” I winced, “You didn’t think to run this plan past me first?  See if I was ok with being more internet famous than I already am?  For the world to see my face in the cosplay community?”
“It’s not like anyone from around here would be looking at cosplay sites,” he assured, “You’ll be fine.  But baby, you’re so much more than the weird girl with the Japan obsession.  You’re the second Kira.  You’re the Queen’s guard dog.  For our con debut, you’re the most badass lieutenant and the greatest sharpshooter in Amestrian history.  Who cares what everyone else thinks?”
“I do!” my heart started racing, “I don’t know if I’m ready for that kind of thing, Julian.”
“You know what?” he comforted me, “If they do judge you for what you love, fuck them!  you’re better than that.  It’s not their life to live.  It’s yours.  If you don’t want to do it, that’s fine.  I won’t force you.  I’ll do this myself.  But I won’t post anything from last night or today without your permission first.  We good?”
“Of course we’re good,” I rested my head on his chest, “It’s just…”
“I know,” he cradled me, “It’s a lot to take in.  I’m sorry for dropping this all on you at once.  I should’ve eased you into this.”
“Maybe,” I compromised, “We could release the ones from last night first.  I look less like me when I’m Ciel than when I’m Misa.  Depending on the reactions, we’ll see if I go on from there.”
“Alright,” Julian agreed, “I can do that.  Are we still doing conventions together?”
“Oh, hell yeah,” I scoffed, “I’ve made peace with that long ago.  I can’t wait for our first stop!”
“That’s my girl,” he beamed, “You ready to do this shoot then?”
“Let’s do it!” I hyped myself back up for it.
However, Julian dropping that kind of bomb on me was a bit much.  I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do this on a grander scale, but me? Professionally cosplaying?  My parents thought I had given up my otaku life. They wrote it off as a phase. What if they ended up finding my pictures online?  Not only would that out me, but Julian, too.  They don’t even know we’re dating!  I mean, Mom has speculated it, but aside from that, they’re clueless.
Even more disturbing, what if Griffin saw my pictures?  Being Misa was just the beginning.  I had some cosplays that rendered me half naked.  Granted, I didn’t have much chub.  Some, but not much.  And I carried most of my weight in my thighs and my boobs!  I didn’t want him seeing me like that.  God only knows what those pictures would be used for.
Then again, Julian did have a point.  If they couldn’t accept me, they didn’t deserve me.  Dressing up like a cartoon was something I loved to do.  I loved seeing my favorite characters come to life. More importantly, I loved being my favorite characters!  Even though I shit on her and she’s considered as one of the most useless anime characters to ever exist, I had a soft spot for Misa Amane. As dumb and ditzy as she is, she’s hopelessly in love with Light and willing to do anything to support him.  I can’t fault her for that.  Even though, her way of showing her love and affection is killing people in the name of Kira’s crusade to make a better world.
Maybe I could do this. Maybe professional cosplaying was in the cards for me.  And Julian did make a mention of doing cosplay crack.  I could actually put my fan fiction to good use!  And if we start posting that online, we’d get ad revenue from that, too.  It sounds completely batshit insane, but maybe, just maybe…This could work.
