TOday's flower is Wolfbane, scientific name Aconitum napellus
It is also known as monkshood
Tumblr media
Today's a poisonous plant will be familiar to those who have read Agatha Christie, as it appeared in 4:50 from Paddington. It is native and endemic to western and central europe. it is poisonous both upon ingestion and touch.
i must admit, i chose this flower for two reasons: its symbolism, and the fact that i have an interest in poison.
it symbolises caution, misantrophy and treachery. i first discovered its symbolism due to a story i read ages ago and when the author's note said they used this as foreshadowing, i fell in love with that.
i will try not to skip more days, thank you all for being gracious

On this particular month at the beginning of December, in the year 1138, Brother Cadfael came to chapter in tranquility of mind, prepared to be tolerant even towards the dull, pedestrian reading of Brother Francis, and long-winded legal haverings of Brother Benedict the sacristan. Men were variable, fallible, and to be humoured. And the year, so stormy in its earlier months, convulsed with siege and slaughter and disruptions, bade fair to end in calm and comparative plenty. The tide of civil war between King Stephen and the partisans of the Empress Maud had receded into the south-western borders, leaving Shrewsbury to recover cautiously from having backed the weaker side and paid a bloody price for it. And for all the hindrances to good husbandry, after a splendid summer the harvest had been successfully gathered in, the barns were full, the mills were busy, sheep and cattle thrived on pastures still green and lush, and the weather continued surprisingly mild, with only a hint of frost in the early mornings. No one was wilting with cold yet, no one yet was going hungry. It could not last much longer, but every day counted as blessing.

Monks Hood by Ellis Peters
These are rapidly becoming  comfort reads.
If I'm having a tough week, I reach for one of Brother Cadfael's stories.
This is book three and is interesting because you learn a little more about Cadfael’s past.
When a disagreeable man decides to disinherit his stepson, he gives his estate to the Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul. This has not been set in stone when the man, his wife, and servents come to the Abbey and settle in to live there as guests, as is part of the agreement.
There is a little bit of upheaval happening with in the Abbey itself, the Father Abbot has been called away, he is old and a decision has to be made, whether or not to retire him to be one of the brothers and to put another priest in his place. While this is being decided Father Prior Robert is put in charge and he is sure that he will be made Abbot when the decision is made.
Prior Robert is snobby and generally annoying.  He's the sibling that, when left in charge, is strict just because he can be.
The Prior  wastes no time in moving in to the Abbot's rooms and reaping the rewards of his temporary position.
One of these, is a pheasant that someone caught and brought for the Abbot to eat.
Prior Robert asks that a portion of the meal be given to the new guests in the Abbey.
Not long after, this disagreeable man, after having an argument with his stepson becomes ill and dies. Brither Cadfael is called and it is discovered that the man was poisoned with a monk's hood oil that Cadfael makes, and is used topically for muscle aches.
A couple more things become clear.
The stepson is suspect number one, even though he is all of 14.
And the boy's mother is the girl Cadfael was promised to over 20 years before. The betrothal happened just before he went off to the crusades, and was more or less forgotten, by both parties.
Considering the fact that it has to do with poisoning and the perception of lost love (neither Cadfael nor the woman really feel all that bad about the betrothal falling apart,  but it other people think they do) this book is actually pretty funny! There's a lot of running around and bait and switch. It was a lot of fun to read.

Image 1 : Hooded seal - Cystophora cristata
Fun Fact : Male hooded seals that are sexually mature are able to inflate a large red sac from one of its nostrils, about the size of a balloon. They do this by shutting the other nostril valve and inflating a membrane which comes out of the other. This is done to attract females / show aggression towards other males.(if u wanna see look it up<3) ^ ^
Image 2 : Harp seal (pup) - Pagophilus groenlandicus
Fun Fact : Harp seal pups (babies) are born with long white fur that helps them absorb sunlight to stay warm while they're developing blubber (as in the pic). Once they grow up they turn a light grey with short fur and dark grey spots. So cute! (о´∀`о)
Image 3 : Hawaiian monk seal - Monachus schauinslandi
Fun Fact : Once a year, hawaiian monk seals molt the top layer on their skin and fur. They do this to keep their coat free of algae. They're also one of the most endangered marine mammal species.

Ellis Petersin Monk’s Hood (1980, 1984) luettu:
WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE. Cadfael on aivan ihana päähenkilö, ja vaikka onkin monen tämän genren salapoliisin kanssa samaa maata (kahden kulttuurin väliinputoaja, sosiaalinen ja hyvä ihmistuntija, verrattain joustava moraalikysymyksissä) niin on samalla hirveän kiinnostava tyyppi.
Koko hahmokaarti on muutenkin mestarillisesti rakennettu.

pencil on paper (black photo carton) – drawing – 21 x 30 cm Once upon a time I had a longer transfer between two trains, far, far away. It was a sunny day, I just picked up my pencils and drew while waiting. During that I raised my eyes from the paper. I was in a little circle of travelers, they watched me. Somebody quickly threw a coin, and they were gone.
