We are SO excited to have chatted with Matthew Bassett, the voice actor for Eris Vanserra in the Graphic Audio Production of the ACOTAR series.

Read below for an Exclusive Q&A with Matt ❤️

How long have you been voice acting? How did you get started in the voice acting industry?

I’ve only really worked with Graphic Audio for voice acting, and I’ve been in their roster of actors since 2012. I’ve been a stage actor (with a tiny bit of film) since 2003, and I’ve taught acting in the Washington, DC, area since 2012. When I moved to the DC area after graduate school and started working around here, a number of actors I liked and admired kept mentioning this company that provided steady work on fun material - westerns, fantasy, sci-fi. The comic book adaptations sold me, I’m a huge comics fan. Since 2012, I’ve played countless varmints, monsters, cads, aliens, superheroes/villains, and the occasional good guy. Along with Eris, my larger roles have included voicing The Homelander in all six volumes of GA’s adaption of The Boys graphic novels and Cullen in the World of Lupi series.

Can you describe the process for being selected for the role of Eris (or any other character)? Were there auditions, callbacks, or specific criteria that led to your casting?

Graphic Audio works like a repertory acting company, in that after your initial audition, they maintain your contact information for project directors to pull from when needed. I’ve done a lot of work with Colleen Delaney, director of the ACOTAR adaptations, including several longer character arcs in multiple series, so she thought I would be a good fit for Eris based on similar characters (rogueish, but with hidden depth that is explored over time) I’ve played elsewhere. I’m glad she did! Eris has been really fun.

How did you prepare for the role of Eris in terms of understanding the character's backstory, motivations, and relationships with other characters?

Graphic Audio does a fantastic job of preparing actors and directing us through performances. Colleen sent each actor a brief but rich character description, often quoting directly from the novels, as well as providing a plot description for each specific novel (necessary since the turnaround from offer to recording is very short). During our sessions, Colleen tells me everything I need to know about where Eris has been since the last scene/book and how his relationships have evolved. GA directors also read in as “scene partners,” which, considering they are all performers themselves, makes it very easy to react as I imagine Eris would.

Eris is a complex and morally ambiguous character. What aspects of his personality did you find most challenging to convey in your performance, and how did you approach tackling those challenges?

His vulnerability is very challenging. Eris has had a hard life, despite growing up with every privilege, which is difficult to convey. He hates everyone to some extent, but it all comes from how much he hates his family and himself. The scenes with Morrigan in particular take a while to record - he has all the feelings when talking to her, but he can’t show any of them.

Did you have any creative input into how Eris's voice would sound, or was it a collaborative effort with the production team and director? Were there any specific discussions about the character's vocal tone or style?

Definitely collaborative! His basic vocal character is very close to mine, with the musicality dialed up a bit so he can taunt everyone so well. Where my director really helps is pushing me to find the different levels to his interactions - when he’s teasing (often), when he’s antagonizing (mostly with Cassian), and when he’s speaking from his heart (VERY rarely, usually to or involving Morrigan).

What actors (voice, stage, film, etc) have inspired you? And did any actors or other characters help inspire your performance for Eris?

Hoo boy. Too many to list! For something like Eris, a lot of inspiration from Tom HIddleston’s Loki, Tom Cruise’s Lestat de Lioncourt, and anything Jeremy Irons has ever done. Characters that you can’t take your eyes off of, even as you want to beat the crap out of them.

Were there any specific challenges or unique aspects to voicing Eris compared to other characters you've portrayed in the past? How did you adapt your voice to capture his essence?

Y’know, for all the dirtbags, murderers, literal monsters, aliens, and villains I’ve voiced, Eris is the one with the biggest heart. The biggest challenge is allowing him to have a deep want, hidden from even himself, for some tenderness, the one thing he has been denied his entire life. A character like Eris is easy to just have fun with and play as a smug prick (which he is), but he has moments of aching loneliness that make him much richer. SPOILER: One of my most recent favorite moments was playing Eris’ surprise and gratitude when receiving a “made” dagger for safekeeping. Eris can’t fathom trusting anyone else with something so powerful and important, because he simply wasn’t shown that level of trust or respect. The moment took him by such surprise. It was great to let myself feel that in the playing.

Do you have any advice for aspiring voice actors who are considering pursuing a career in Voice Acting? Any tips for breaking into the business and honing their craft?

Train your voice! I received excellent vocal training as part of my MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in Acting at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I learned how to care for my vocal health, how to support with my breath, and how to modulate the dynamics of my voice for character differentiation as well as basic performance beats. You may not have the inclination for that level of training, but a regular voice lesson with a singing coach will give you similar techniques. In terms of breaking in: like anything of this nature, it’s relationships. Build a strong resume, but also build strong relationships with your collaborators and a reputation for reliability. Directors know that I’ll prepare so that I can make strong initial choices, but that I am more than happy to adjust my choices as needed to make the overall production its best.

Ian Gulbin, New York inmate 14B3263, born 1982, incarceration intake in November 2014 at age 32, sentenced to life, scheduled for parole consideration November 2037

Murder, 2nd Degree

Ian Gulbin’s murder case should never have been about him, prosecutors said.

Instead, it is about 1-year-old Brayden, who was violently slammed into his crib by Gulbin just because he wouldn’t stop crying.

It is about 8-year-old Mikey Hogan, who doesn’t yet grasp why he’ll never see his younger brother again and fears Gulbin will come after him one day.

And it is about Brayden’s mother, Anastasia Hogan, whose infant daughter with Gulbin will never meet the brother her father killed.

“I always saw greatness in you,” Anastasia Hogan wrote Gulbin in a letter read by First Assistant District Attorney Dawn Catera Lupi in Oneida County Court. “I never thought you could be capable of something so horrific. Who would have thought that you could go from teaching Brayden how to walk to something so terrible and hateful?”

Gulbin who believed at the time that Brayden was his son until DNA tests proved otherwise – was sentenced to 24 years to life. However, this came only after Gulbin pulled the focus back onto himself at the expense of the family members he once said he wanted to spare from any further suffering.

Gulbin previously claimed he was coerced into pleading guilty, allegations another judge recently ruled were contrived. Gulbin then admitted that he had selfishly lied after being influenced by other people.

“I was scared to go to prison,” Gulbin told Judge Michael L. Dwyer, noting that he never meant for Brayden to die. “I tried to extend this thing as far as possible.”

A statement by the father of Brayden’s brother touched upon the future that Gulbin might face behind bars.

“Just know that you are a low-life criminal and are going to jail with the big boys now, as a baby killer," Lupi read from Michael Hogan's letter. “No one there likes criminals that have committed a crime like yours.

While Lupi described Gulbin as a “monster,” Gulbin’s new attorney, Jeremy Alexander, said his client will always be haunted by what he’s done.

“I hope he’s able to find some sort of meaning in life from this point forward,” Alexander said. “There is value in redemption and forgiveness to be had.” Brayden’s mother even wrote in her statement to Gulbin: “I hope and pray that you become a better person, for Brayden.”

Dwyer finished by asking Gulbin: “Thirteen months and 16 days. What do those words mean to you?”

“Everything,” Gulbin said about the length of time Brayden was alive before he was killed through Gulbin’s “stupidity.”

The Smithy, the shortest in their party, looked back to the Traveler. He asked in Mudoran, and Link could pick up a few words from his practice. “Champion complete Rancher vestigia, inquit nose of a lupi?”

The Traveler nodded, confirming the Smithy had caught the gist of the conversation- he was picking up the language faster than Link was picking up the spoken part of the Mudoran tongue. Which wasn't a fair comparison as the alphabet was far from phonetic, but Link wished he had a bit more time to practice and maybe less time trying to not die from monsters in the wrong era.

Though, what he most wished for was whatever magic let the Traveler understand all languages he saw or heard, translating for him. He still had to learn how to speak or sign or write, without magical aid, but it was still something. If they all had something like that, it would be far easier…

But the gods were not what Link would call detail oriented. The more mundane facts of mortal life tended to evade them, no matter the work their oracles did to bridge the gap or the prayers spoken at shrines.

“Vestigia, inquit, lupi?” Link repeated to the Traveler, who hummed, translating the words.

“Tracking, said, and um- like Wolfie is?”

All of those made sense then, except… “And complete?”

“No, like kind honoring word?”

“Compliment?”

“Indeed.”

Truly Mudoran did not have enough distinct sounds like it didn't symbols, but Link did not criticize the language. He just sighed.

“Well. Guess we should press on then, to the next portal. After the translating business is done.”

9. Do you remember any specific times when the game made you go “oh shit” in a good way?

The honest answer would be no, but that's memory issues 😅😂

Oh! I remembered one! I was in Orr, and I looked up, and I saw just how freaking high some of those towers were!

I was in Blazeridge, climbing on top of ruins, and the dragons swooped by.

Climbing the sky trails in the Desert Highlands and seeing the palace in the sky.

Glint's Lair, and Istan, and the boiling sea in Draconis Mons.

Doing current events and suddenly everywhere were those sad, shiny, naked dudes sobbing and vanishing.

Hopping into WvW (when I could still be bothered) in the evening to grab something and end up defending borderlands until 5 am with like 5 people.

Soloing the last 25% of Lupi on a build not made for it after everyone died, because I wanted to rub it into the pug's face.

Going EotM to grab a WvW daily, and while capping a reactor, a second player joined, and we looked at each other, looked at the tower (which as also daily) and were like: Wanna try?

3 hours later, the two of us had capped everything on the whole map, single-handedly, including the two enemy keeps. Most epic moment of my gaming life. Never saw them again.

11. What’s your favourite feature that’s been added to the game since you started?

Since I had another 11, this time I'll say gliding. Movement in this game is ON FUCKING SPOT, and I have never felt as satisfied in any game than I did jumping off some high cliffs and going swoosh.

Mounts really are a close second to gliding.

17. Favourite location?

I really do like Divinity's Reach (I'm boring), the district with the carnival and the confetti flying is <3 I also love Bitterfrost, I spent too much money back then on getting the vantage point teleport item and worst of all, I don't even regret it. Just chilling under a cherry blossom tree.

But my fav gotta be Orr. Oh hey *wanders back to question 9*

I don't know what it is. The weird architecture (I mean, cool stone arch, bro, but did you, you know, build houses?), the theme of the gods, the rainbow shimmering corals and glowing orbs, Arah, which I am very fond of.

When One Path Ends was announced, I was SO excited 😂 I do love Siren's Landing as well.

The Best Picture Oscar My Way (2000-2022)

After doing this list, I suddenly got inspired to do this sort of thing for some of the other Academy Award categories. For this project I got the following things to say:

Many of the win/nomination changes will be based more on some infamous or otherwise perceived snubs (i.e. Martin Scorsese needing to wait until The Departed for a Best Director win). In general, the changes are based on what the frequent consensus seems to be from what I’ve seen.

I may STILL keep a few of those same snubs if it simply lines up more with the film’s initial reactions at the time (i.e. Clockwork Orange).

There are some changes that the Oscars applied to certain categories over the years (i.e. Sound Mixing & Sound Editing becoming just Best Sound). For this list’s sake, I’ll apply some of my OWN cases of said changes applying (such as the Best Picture expansion from 5 to 10 occurring earlier since, in hindsight, they probably should’ve done that sooner). In case of that change, I’ll just apply it earlier (starting in 1997).

Said expansion has resulted in no less than 8 nominations in Best Picture at a time, so that’ll be my minimum (until 2021, where it was officially made the set amount no questions asked).

Gonna try to keep EGOTs as best as I can. Luckily for this category, there’s currently only one that’ll matter.

More inclusive wins (POC; LGBT) will be more likely to stay. There may be some exceptions after I’ve already made my own inclusive alternatives.

For the early years where Best Picture went to the studio instead (for some godforsaken reason), I’ll just pretend that’s not the case.

Due to some weird, borderline convoluted rules with Best International Feature Film (Mainly that this category doesn’t require US theater plays, but most other ones do), I’ll often go off of an eligible film’s year of original release unless they managed nominations the following year (City of God; Spirited Away)

For Best Picture, I’m only gonna list the nominated producer for newly added films (here’s the Wikipedia page for the rest). I will mostly go with the ones credited as “produced by” or “p.g.a.” (if the latter is shown) on IMDB as the nominees. Limit is five.

Italicized film titles are the ones I added. Bold ones are winners.

HIKARI NO OU: il primo teaser svela finalmente quando l’anime andrà in onda

Dopo Vlad Love, Junji Nishimura e Mamoru Oshii si cimentano nell’adattamento dell’opera fantasy post-apocalittica firmata da Rieko Hinata.

Ne abbiamo sentito parlare per la prima volta due anni or sono, ormai, ma finalmente ecco arrivare un primo, breve, teaser di “HIKARI NO OU”, che fissa infine il debutto della serie animata per gennaio 2023.

L’adattamento della serie di romanzi fantasy post-apocalittica di Rieko Hinata è in lavorazione presso lo studio SIGNAL.MD (Recovery of an MMO Junkie, Platinum End) e vede una nuova collaborazione fra Junji Nishimura (Ranma ½, ViVid Strike!, True Tears, Vlad Love) e Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, The Sky Crawlers, Jin-Roh - Uomini e lupi, Lamù - Beautiful Dreamer, Vlad Love, Tenshi no Tamago).

In questo caso, a Nishimura è affidata la regia, mentre Oshii si sta occupando di stendere la sceneggiatura .

Il character design è curato invece da Takuya Saito (Monster Hunter Stories: Ride On, Macross Zero), mentre le musiche sono ad opera di Kenji Kawai (Mob Psycho 100, Seirei no Moribito).

La storia è ambientata nel caotico mondo lasciato dall’Ultima Guerra dell'umanità, avvolto da una sterminata e fitta foresta. A causa di una speciale arma speciale usata nel conflitto, gli esseri umani ora scoppiano spontaneamente in fiamme quando si avvicinano anche solo ad una piccola fonte di fuoco.

L'unico modo per procurarsene in sicurezza è estrarla dagli Spiriti della Fiamma, bestie che risiedono nelle profondità della foresta. Recentemente, fra i Cacciatori di Fuoco si sono diffuse le voci su un fantomatico “Re dei Cacciatori di Fuoco”, un individuo che sarebbe in grado di raccogliere l’energia della Scintilla Errante, l’artificiale cometa millenaria che solca i cieli dai tempi della guerra e che ora sta tornando sulla terra.

Touko è una ragazza cresciuta in un villaggio e Koushi è un ex studente della capitale. L'incontro tra i due, che non avrebbero dovuto incrociarsi, cambierà il destino del mondo.

Il primo romanzo è stato pubblicato in Giappone nel dicembre del 2018, corredato delle illustrazioni ad opera di Akihiro Yamada (The Twelve Kingdoms, RahXephon).

Al momento l’opera conta in tutto quattro volumi, più una side story, uscita il 21 dicembre 2021.

Briar and Devin stood back-to-back.

The two were splattered head-to-toe in blood and foul-smelling ichor; so thoroughly covered that they were practically indistinguishable. Devin was favoring his left leg; Briar was gasping for air after a violent blow to the ribs. Neither looked like they would be standing for much longer.

They were surrounded.

Upon first glance, the creatures around them resembled abnormally-large wolves—they were bear-sized monsters with night-dark fur and knifelike teeth. However, their eyes were unlike those of any earthly animal—a myriad of vivid colors swirled in their sockets, bright hues akin to those of supernovae. They were beautiful—or would have been, had the situation not been so dire.

Briar sucked in a breath and tightened her grip on her iron dagger. Devin shifted his weight off of his right foot.

It was supposed to be easy.

They were told to go after a group of Nevermore—and a small group at that. They had prepared for a small group of Nevermore. No one had told them about the Lupi.

Briar scanned the seven creatures that circled them, snarling and creeping closer by the second. A glance at the surroundings told her that escaping was futile.

Not like this.

It had been an ordinary day. She had planned to drop off her library books that night. Had promised her roommates that she would return with enough time to make dinner. Briar hated breaking her promises.

The thought was almost laughable—the Lupi could not have cared less whether she had dinner plans. Against her best attempts, her breath hitched.

Please not today.

She had planned for an ordinary day. She had not planned to die.

There had to be something she and Devin could do. There was no way she was going to perish—not like this. Her story was not over yet.

There is always another choice. We just need to find one.

The largest Lupus growled. It was close enough for her to reach out and touch.

Devin pressed his back more tightly against hers. Both of their shirts were thoroughly soaked with red blood and black ichor.

The Lupus lunged. Someone screamed. She did not know whether it was her or Devin.

There might be another choice—but Briar doubted they would live long enough to find it.

Mary(High-Elf Life Cleric)

A priestess of a church that seems to despise her because of her beliefs and actions. She wants their approval, and wants to go on an important pilgrimage to spread the word of her diety.

Landon(Human Thief Rouge)

A noble turned common thief. His house fell due to an assassination, and the royal treasures of his house were stolen. He aims to find restore his house however he can.
