Inspired by Palaeolithic goddess symbolism. The womb, the earth, the nest, the bird, the egg, the snake, the cave. ••• One of a kind art doll with dual bird face and single black glass eye, individually made feathers, reclaimed bead detailing with snake and central womb cavity containing a stone and rusted wire symbolising the great womb or nest of the earth mother. #xphaiea #artdoll #handmade #artdolls #palaeolithic #goddess #goddessculture #matrilineal #mothergoddess #pagansofinstagram #goddessworship #witchcraft #redgoddess #earthmother #witchart #pagan #bird #assemblage https://www.instagram.com/p/CpDKDb6tzFE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hey all!
I want to share some of my latest findings on Paleolithic "Venus" goddesses of Laussel (20,000ish years old--location, SW France) and Willendorf (30,000ish years old--location Austria).
It's looking more and more like the Venus of Laussel was used as a lunar calendar measurement system--perhaps to measure women's menstrual cycles?!?
As for the Venus of Willendorf, it seems she was originally carved in Northern Italy and brought to Austria during the Ice Age! And that's not all....it's very likely she was made as a self-portrait. Before the advent of mirrors. Think about it...

Norsery Rhymes from A to Z Matrons Fachineihis, the Glad Mothers
Happy Thorsday! - Here’s another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic, Celtic) mythological characters. This week it’s the Matrons  Fachineihis  /  Matronis Fachinehae / Fahineiha / Fachineihis, Fachinehis, Fahinehabus / Fachenei.
Three guardian ancestral protective Matron (Mothers) and Goddesses, found mentioned in several shrines and stones around Euthungae, Collogne, Nettershem, and Zingsheim, Westphalia.
Their name has generally been thought to mean to be ‘happy’, ‘glad’, or ‘of joy’ from the Germanic name Fahena and Fahinehae. Though more recently the idea that it’s derived from the Germanic faxa or ‘fish dam’ in a river is being considered. Though more from the want to associate their name to a water related place name than anything else.
On one of the stones dedicated to them there were the inclusion of Laurel trees that is likely a reference to Yggdrasil the world tree. Though it could also simply be an indicator that the goddesses maintained a sacred grove.

Church in St. Niklaus today from Wikipedia. Orally transmitted from #Oberwallis, or #Valais. There was a small stone statue of Mary stands high up on a rough rock wall of the Rätiberg behind St. Niklaus in Visperthal. Her eyes are barely visible. Once it stood at the bottom of the road in a chapel that the passersby could pray before. The chapel is now empty. But once it happened that a profane man, whose desires had been unheard of, took dung and pelted that at the holy image. The image began shedding tears. But when the man repeated the sacrilege again, the image hurried away from the access of people. It went high up in the wall and did not want to go down to pay heed to people’s prayers. Climbing the rock and retrieving it was completely impossible. Rather, the people thought that they could take it down from the top of the summit. They scaled the mountain, entwined a man with strong knots of a rope so that he can float downwards till he come before the image and safely take it down. But while descending, the rope which held him up was getting thinner and thinner towards the bottom. By the time he reached before the image, it became as thin as hair. The situation terrified the people waiting. The man called them to tell that they should pull him for God’s sake, so that he could survive. So the people standing on the summit pulled him again and the ropes became stronger, keeping him safe. Henceforth, people had to stand at the feet of the image of the Holy Mother and never reach her again.  *Story of #miracle. #Rätiberg behind St. Niklaus valley in #Swiss Alps is a rocky area. St. Niklaus, now a famous trekking destination has a population of around 2100, most of whom are Roman Catholic. The valley is also well known for being the home of famous Swiss mountain-guide families. The way people try to scale the high mountain in the story, shows us the practice of mountaineering in this region. The story must have evolved after the spread of #Christianity here, but when? That is difficult to define. #folktale #belief #mothermary #holymother #mothergoddess #romancatholic #switzerland #sagen #grimms #sin #punishment #rockclimbers #regionalhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd7H-rjrj-y/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Fern's introduction to: Nehalennia
Nehalennia is a Goddess associated with sea-trade, prosperity, the harvest, and the North Sea. She is also a psychopomp. She was revered in Zeeland in the Netherlands, near the Rhine in Germany, and in England. We are not sure if Nehalennia was Germanic, Celtic, or Roman. The name points towards Roman, but she was likely a local Goddess that was given a Romanized name.
We know Nehalennia due to altar stones that have been found near Colijnsplaat, Zeeland. Symbols often found on the stones are dogs (symbols of the underworld), baskets of apples, pears, and bread (harvest and prosperity), a ship's wheel or ship's bow, a shell shaped ceiling, and a distinct short cape that Nehalennia wears on all her stones. She is also often depicted in the same style as the Germanic Matronae, or Mothers, and in some stones from Trier in the same triad as the Matronae. For this reason she is also thought of as a Mothergoddess.
The stones were dedicated by seafaring tradespeople as payment for a safe passage, often to England. They sold fish sauce, salt, and wine. The first set of stones were discovered in 1645 when a hug storm eroded part of the coast. There were no museums or historical societies back then, so the stones were displayed in a church. Tucked into the back, they were underneath a leaky roof and covered in moss. A few years later, the church was struck by lightning and burned down, and the stones were lost. Luckily sketches and drawings of the stones were still preserved.
Then, on the 14th of March in 1970 a fisherman found a strange stone in his fishing nets. Instead of throwing it back, he called the historical society in Leyden, and started fishing for more stones. Together over the course of a few months they found over 150 votive stones and fragments, all dedicated to Nehalennia. This is when she emerged again from both the see and from obscurity, and why I celebrate Nehalennia Resurfacing on this date.
Fragments found of the temple itself indicate that there were probably fresh water wells, where the boats could get the drinking water they needed for their journey over the North Sea. A replica of the temple (smaller and without wells) is open to the public on Colijnsplaat.
As stated Nehalennia is a Goddess of trade over sea, of the harvest and prosperity, and she is a psychopomp, bringing the souls of the departed to the Otherworld.
Because of her realm of sea travel I associate with her: lighthouses, storms, the stars (navigation), shells, grey pearls and moonstone, sailing and boating, protection, selkies, merfolk, knotmagic, sea magic.
Because of her realm of harvest I associate with her: apples, baskets and cornucopias, wheat and grain, bread, nature, fields, growth, prosperity both physical and spiritual, bonfires, harvest festivals, fertility.
Because of her role as a psychopomp I associate with her: dogs, the cycle of death and life (see also, harvest), a safe voyage to a land over the sea (for example, Avalon), traveling through the realms, protection.
I see Nehalennia as the Wildmother, (a name I had for her before Critical Role). She is the Goddess of land and sea, of abundance and life. She is a warm and loving parent that protects, but does let you figure things out for yourself. She is a deep tie to my land and the people who have lived here before. Hail the Lady of the North Sea, Nehalennia Hail!

Reminder that Mother Mary loves Her Children very dearly.
She holds us all under Her Mantle.
Have a nice day, or a calm night, knowing She will protect you!
She loves you regardless of "sin".
She loves you regardless of what you've done wrong.
She loves you if you haven't cleaned your room, house, or done the dishes.
She loves you.
