Muma Pădurii is a grotesque mischievous hag from Romanian folklore. Dwelling deep in the forest she cares for the native flora and fauna, scaring away those who threaten to harm her wild habitat.

Second Mark Making Workshop 29th September
This second Markmaking Workshop was done to refine our skills as artists and focused mainly on continuous line which I think is a really interesting and creates a good looking effect.
With this workshop, I tried to bring in more helenic-pagan roots to connect my work and I think that I did a good job with it.

I got permission to photograph my statuette of Demeter that sits on (in this photo) my Mabon altar to celebrate the autumn equinox and harvest. I did three similar portraits of Demeter's statuette, the first one being with a ballpoint pen, the second with an alcohol marker and the third using a paintbrush and watered-down ink. All three were done using the continuous line technique, and as I progressed each drawing, I tried to become slightly more 'wild' and expressive, caring less about perfection and accuracy, and more about the main components of her silhouette and shapes. I think this was successful because it loosened my work and made it more expressive. I captured the key components of her figure and icon, whilst making it slightly different each time, means I have three variations to work with in the future.
What is weaker with these studies, is that the more I did, the weaker they look. That was slightly on purpose, but I just don't like them as much as the first. What I like about continuous line is that even if it looks wrong, from far back, it still works together really well, and the fact that you don't take your pen off the whole time, almost gives a feasible excuse for why it doesn't look quite right.

This primary photo was taken on a walk in Bodnant Garden and I think it looks really Greek and works well with my theme so I decided to include it. I think this was the right decision.
This was the first drawing I did and I think it turned out really well. I focused well with the detail and shape of the statue. Some proportions are a bit off but I think it adds to the charm of the sample. This piece was done purely with a ballpoint pen without taking it off the paper. I spent a while on it but it turned out really well and I think it will be easy/ a well produced sample to work into later on.

This piece was more experimental, as it is more nature related but I wanted to develop the idea of scale and light/shadow with this sample. I feel like, in order to improve it, I would add some feeling of spirit into the tree, perhaps at the base where my dog is looking towards, to create a nice story with the visual communication.
I am inspired by the work of Xphaiea (their collection name, real name Tom Cherry) where they created art dolls based on spirits and deities.
This one below was based on the artist's interpretation of 'spring spirits'

Just want to give a special shout-out message to the eclectic witch lady from Oregon that decorated her apartment with sheets of plastic wrap and broken eggshells (and other random assorted garbage) whose blog on here I used to follow before it was unceremoniously deleted. You may have been crazy as shit but your aesthetic was on point.

SPRING-HEELED JACK by XPHAIEA
First witnessed in the early 19th century, Spring Heeled-Jack was a menacing spectral fiend, who delighted in terrorising London especially frightening young women whose clothing he would tear and personages he would maul at, as well as jumping in the pathway of coaches and causing dreadful accidents.
Jack was popularly imagined to be a tall, thin figure in a long black cloak, with clawed hands and fearsome eyes that "resemble red balls of fire" whilst also also commonly depicted as breathing blue or white flame and emitting a maniacal devilish laugh.
This urban prankster was often depicted in Penny Dreadfuls and other sensation fiction of the Victorian period.

DRUSILLA KARNSTEIN by xphaiea
Wild with bloodlust, Miss Karnstein terrorises the local villages under cover of darkness. Resplendent in her disintegrating finery - and her distinct red riding hood, she rises nightly from the mildewed recesses of her majesterial family vault, mounts her deranged werewolf steed Belial by light of the haunted moon and the carnage begins.
Rumour has it that she was turned by her own grandmother - a veritable crone, harridan and vampiric witch - who dwelling in the nearby woodlands, sank her teeth into Drusilla out of spite after she interrupted a clandestine necromantic rite bringing Grandmother some handbaked gingersnap biscuits.
Her feral madness and blind fury knows no bounds! Entire villages have fallen prey to her sanguinary lusts, and that of her steed - who gorges himself on the intestinal tracts and bloody innards of their victims in a carnivorous feeding frenzy!
Beware!!!
