Baldur’s Gate 3 in Will Wight’s Cradle (Part 1/?) [SPOILERS!]

Astarion would have a Shadow Path, maybe some Sword or Force as well. Becoming a vampire spawn (a process very tangentially linked to a Blood Shadow) he adds Blood and Hunger to the mix as well. Icons are tough, Blood or Hunger would only fit an Ascended Astarion, but I think the Shadow Icon, or myabe the Bow Icon could potentially work for non-Ascended Astarion.

Gale is the classic problem where Cradle’s Sacred Arts is very limiting compared to pretty much all other magic systems, so this is a tricky one. I’m inclined to put him on a pre-existing Path, the Path Of (The) Holy Wind (Wind, Light & Dreams), but then again he’s associated with illusions quite a bit. That would be a Path of Dream Madra, with other potential aspects as well. Even the Path Of The White Fox isn’t out of the question. He’d also definitely a scriptor, so maybe the Path Of The Last Oath/Path Of The Dawn Oath could be possibilities. I feel like Gale would touch the Scribe Icon, and God Gale is an obvious shoe-in for the Crown Icon.

Karlach quite obviously wields a Path of Fire & Force. The Fire Aspect comes as a Bloodline Ability (being a Zariel Tiefling), but the introduction later on of her Infernal Engine alters the Madra somewhat. Force is there because she hits hard anyway, and I think it works. Icon would be Strength, maybe the Sun Icon as well?

Lae’zel is a pure Sword Path. Was there truly any other option? The Death Icon is pretty well suited for her as well.

Shadowheart is a tricky one, with similar problems to Gale. I think she originally had a Core of Light Madra as a Selûnite, but had it altered by the Sharrans with Shadow Madra. I’m not sure if you can have Shadow and Light Madra in the same Core, if you can then she has both, if not then just Shadow. Dark Justiciar Shadowheart is a shoe-in for the Shadow Icon, whereas Selûnite Shadowheart would probably fit the Life Icon.

Wyll is another pure Sword Path. I feel like, as a noble, his Path would more similar to Naru Cassius Arelius’ Path Of Silver Grace, more of a duellist’s Path than a warrior’s one. That being said, as a wandering monster-slayer, the Path Of The Endless Sword could be a good fit as well. I don’t actually think Mizora’s deal would alter his Core, but if it did it would definitely add Fire Madra to the mix. The Sword Icon natch.

Halsin is a Sacred Bear, a Life Path with maybe Force Madra as well. Life and/or Bear Icons, but I think he’d be a Herald.

Minthara as a Drow she’d naturally wield Shadow Madra, and as a Paladin she’d clearly have Sword or Force Madra added in. Shadow Icon of course.

Jaheira is gonna be Life and Sword Madra, with a good affinity for the Sword Icon

Minsc is a deceptively simple Force Path, mostly focused on Enforcement Techniques for both his body and his weapons. He is contracted to Boo, a sacred hamster of Archlord level, originating from somewhere in the Rosegold continent. The Path has some incredibly strange properties, as if affected by some creature beyond Cradle…

Boo is either a Monarch or a Dreadgod. Either way, his Path is cycled from strange Cosmic Madra, so I couldn’t tell you what it does, but it’s most recognisable Aspect is Force. Many believe he is a simple Archlord level Sacred Beast from somewhere in the Rosegold continent, and don’t pay him much mind. Clearly his Icons are the Strength Icon and the Hamster Icon.

I'm obsessed with the new Disney film Prey (minor spoilers to come) that has been released this month, to the point that i've already rewatched it many times for many reasons, but the most important is it's impossible for me to not interpret it as a passionate and long love letter to BtVS.

I know that the film is a new "opus" in the Predator franchise but the influence of Buffy is so much everywhere (she spent her time killing all kind of predators on BtVS), that this story could have been easily used to completely reboot my favourite vampire show, if the intent to resuscitate it was still in the air.

Let's be clear i'm not usually a fan of crossover, i saw the first Predator film but wasn't into it because there was no reason for me to bother with so much testosterone, when the Alien franchise offered me years before an heroine like Ellen Ripley.

But Prey is a new concept: i watched the gifs on Tumblr and was immediately and intensely attracted to the vibe of the film, without knowing anything about it.

The landscapes alone (the story takes place in the Northern Great Plains in North America in 1719 so a very wild and breathtaking environment, with seemingly endless sweep of prairies, forests and mountains) are to die for.

But it's really the cast that makes it worth: an ensemble cast of almost only native americans (Comanche people) with as main character a teen heroine (between 16 years old and 18 years old), named Naru and her amazing dog Sarii. They are both at the center of a story that focus on her fight to survive and to protect her community/tribe from a monster coming from space.

A predator looking constantly for new preys, acting with the strength and ferocity of a wild animal and the intelligence of a human hunter, while being also equipped with the most advanced technology (heat sensor, an unbreakable field that can cut heads and many more weapons).

The script shows very well Naru's progression: how she develops her real even solid hunting skills and tools that aren't, despite her training, enough to convince her tribe that she could be a hunter like her brother that everyone admires.

The plot is driven by the question of her ability to eventually come at the top of the chain of all the different kind of predators that the film presents. Will she convince her community that she has the capacity to lead them in the many other fights coming for survival, against the european settlers (and possibly more monsters from space), that are deliberately reducing drastically their habitat and their access to the food?

The most exciting part being how i can make connections with Buffy. This story was already more or less contained in the seasons 3 and 4 of the tv show.

It's like Buffy from the episode Helpless - the version of our heroine without supernatural powers but with better coordination than she had in the episode and still ressourceful - had met Beer Bad/cave Buffy for the fashion sense and they both become one and jumped into the world of Pangs.

But instead of fighting the Chumash people, she would be a part of them and would lead them to fight the colonial and patriarcal system of the white settlers (The Initiative) and the cyber monster half human/half demon that they created: Adam.

The monster of Prey The Predator has nothing in common with humanity, but he strangely reacts in very human way sometimes. And of course he shares with Adam the same physical strength, size and weight, same taste for evisceration with sharp blades and a deep need to hunt and be at the top of the food chain, if only to dominate (but not necessarily to eat).

The cherry on the top/the highlight of those endless parallels and patterns: the fact that season 4 is the season that introduced the first slayer Sineya, and brought Buffy to the roots of her power and how the line of slayers was created.

Naru is "born" (as a hunter) from fighting a demon/monster never seen before but unlike the first slayer she's not sacrificed, forced to take the demon blood and become one of them to equal its strength and kill it. Naru chooses to hunt/fight the monster as a part of a ritual that all the hunters of the tribe must follow to earn their place.

Taking the monster's blood in this scenario would be a sign of victory and social prestige (and it's the reason why she at first wanted" to hunt something that could hunt her" before her journey became a revenge tale against the white men and the monster).

Like i said if anyone wanted to reinvent the origin of the entire line of slayers, it couldn't have been a better beginning.

I didn't think it was possible to get me so hooked about a possible reboot but this film raised the stakes to a new level. All of sudden, i find myself wanting a new BtVS prequel (show or film). Desperately. And i'm even ready for a new cast, as long as it's as good as this one (i've seen criticism of Prey cast and all i have to say is that it's pure racism in my book: they totally own their part, and are more real and credible that you can dream them to be).

Prey really deserves by itself all the praise and hype it can get: it's probably the best action film of the year.

But for a Buffy fan, it's a gift and one so much more exciting because it came out of blue, is so completely unexpected. I didn't need a new obsession but i really needed this new obsession and now i need more of BtVS too.

Manga the Week of 4/6/22

SEAN: April, the most important month of the year! What manga could be coming out?

MICHELLE: In which two particular manga reviewers just happened to be born!

SEAN: Airship, in print, has I Am Blue, in Pain, and Fragile, which we discussed last week, as well as Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation 16.

ASH: I much more likely to read I Am Blue, in Pain, and Fragile now that it’ll be in print. (That was a pretty quick turnaround!)

SEAN: For early digital editions, they have Berserk of Gluttony 6 and Classroom of the Elite 11.

From Ghost Ship we have a new debut. DARLING in the FRANXX ran in Shonen Jump + and is coming out here in two-volume omnibuses. Post-apocalypse children pilot giant robots. It has an anime. And it’s by the artist of To-Love-Ru.

ASH: I’ll admit I wasn’t paying very close attention, but don’t think I realized this was a Ghost Ship title until now.

SEAN: We also get Into the Deepest, Most Unknowable Dungeon 2 and Who Wants to Marry a Billionaire? 2.

Some digital stuff from J-Novel Club. We see Black Summoner 8, the 7th manga volume of Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill, The Emperor’s Lady-in-Waiting Is Wanted as a Bride 4 (the final volume), Infinite Dendrogram 17, Min-Maxing My TRPG Build in Another World 3, Perry Rhodan NEO 7, The Reincarnated Princess Spends Another Day Skipping Story Routes 3, Slayers 13, A Wild Last Boss Appeared! 8, and The World’s Least Interesting Master Swordsman 8.

Lotsa print volumes for Kodansha. We see In/Spectre 15, Lovesick Ellie 3, Orient 8, Peach Boy Riverside 6, Penguin & House 2, Shaman King Omnibus 8, Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie 9, Those Not-So-Sweet Boys 6, and Vampire Dormitory 4.

SEAN: There are two digital debuts. The Abandoned Reincarnation Sage (Suterareta Tensei Kenja – Mamono no Mori de Saikyou no Daima Teikoku o Tsukuriageru) is a sensibly shortened title, and also a manga that runs in Magazine Pocket. Powerful sage reincarnates… and is promptly abandoned, as a baby. Fortunately, he’s found by a nearby tribe… of goblins!

The Angel, the Devil, and Me (Otonari wa Tenshi to Akuma) is a single volume shoujo title from The Dessert. Girl meets her new neighbors… and of crap, they’re hot! Should she make a move on them… or should she SHIP them? This is from the creator of Boss Wife.

ANNA: Ok, this sounds amusing.

SEAN: Also digital: Chihayafuru 31, The Decagon House Murders 4, I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability 5, Kounodori: Dr. Stork 22, My Darling, the Company President 5, and My Idol Sits the Next Desk Over! 4.

MICHELLE: I need to have a Chihayafuru marathon.

ANNA: Me too. I regard it as an indication that I’m a failure as a person.

SEAN: One Peace has the 9th volume of The New Gate.

Debuting from Seven Seas is The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior (Higeki no Genkyou to naru Saikyou Gedou Rasubosu Joou wa Min no tame ni Tsukushimasu), the manga version of the light novel which Seven Seas also puts out. It runs in Comic Zero-Sum.

Seven Seas also has Failed Princesses 5, Berserk of Gluttony 5, Even Though We’re Adults 4, Haganai: I Don’t Have Many Friends 20 (the final volume), Machimaho: I Messed Up and Made the Wrong Person Into a Magical Girl! 9, and Rozi in the Labyrinth 3 (also the final volume).

ASH: I really need to read more of Even Though We’re Adults.

SEAN: Viz has a debut next week, coming from Shonen Jump. It’s Sakamoto Days, the story of a legendary assassin who fell in love, got married, got older, and put on weight. But does he still have the old skills? Signs point to yes.

ANNA: I will usually read at least one volume of an assassination manga.

ASH: Same, really.

SEAN: Also from Viz: Chainsaw Man 10, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: The Official Coloring Book, Jujutsu Kaisen 15, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War 22, Kaiju No. 8 2, Moriarty the Patriot 7, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes 12, My Love Mix-Up! 3, Queen’s Quality 14, Skip Beat! 46, Snow White with the Red Hair 18, Spy x Family 7, and Yona of the Dawn 35. Wow. I am getting a LOT of that.

MICHELLE: Holy cow, that’s a ton of great stuff. My heart, as ever, belongs to Skip Beat!, though.

ANNA: Me too! A new volume of Skip Beat! is always cause for celebration.

ASH: A very good Viz week!

SEAN: Plenty of light novels from Yen On. We see Date a Live 5, Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody 16, The Detective Is Already Dead 3, I Kept Pressing the 100-Million-Year Button and Came Out on Top 2, The Otherworlder, Exploring the Dungeon 2, Solo Leveling 4, and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime 13. Strangely, given my usual reading, I am getting none of these.

ASH: I’ve been meaning to give one version or another of Solo Leveling a try, but I simply haven’t got around to it yet.

SEAN: As for Yen Press, the debut is Banished from the Hero’s Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside (Shin no Nakama Janai to Yuusha no Party o Oidasareta node, Henkyou de Slow Life Suru Koto ni Shimashita). We’ve had the light novel, we’ve had the anime, now let’s have the manga. It runs in Comic Walker.

And we also get the 4th and final volume of Little Miss P.

Come on, come on. Decide! Pick a favorite!

A meme taken from @convenientalias and @fucktheg0ds. Basically, ranking all my femslash ships by percentage I’ve written. Only based on AO3. I tried to count the gen fics with femslash pairings too, since they appear in the tags.

Most ships I have written only one time, even if there are exceptions.

Phèdre/Mélisande (Kushiel’s Legacy) : 5% (1/21). Canon kinky foeyay ship! Quite big relative to the size of the fandom.

Reiko/Hinoe (Natsume Yuujinchou) : 5% (1/21). It is an old fic and it has gotten so much bigger now! I should read the new fics!

Pearl/Connie (Steven Universe) : 5% (1/21). An unwholesome ship that antis hate. ^^

Kitty/Illyana (Marvel) : 6% (6/107). Quite a big one, but also one of my favorites, so I’ve written quite a bit of it! I’m glad it got big, really (by femslash standards), it was not that much when I’ve started.

Brunnhilde/OFC (Thor movies) : 6% (1/16). I wish Brunnhilde’s dead girlfriend had a name. I’m sure it would make the ship bigger.

Artemis/Iphigenia (Greek myth) : 7% (1/15). Another creepy ship, that I love.

Retsu/Isane (Bleach) : 8% (1/13). I was deep in Bleach fandom once. I wrote a lot of combinations. Most of them were jossed.

Spinsters (Once upon a Time) : 9% (1/11). They were in only an episode, at the time I hoped we’d see more of them. I know in the fairy tale they’re sisters, but they’re also three, and I will stay persuaded that Rumplestiltskin, after him mother left, was raised by two lesbian spinsters fairies.

Mabel/Candy (Gravity Falls) : 10% (1/10). I’m honestly suprised it’s not bigger. There’s one femslash ship in Gravity Falls and it’s eating all the other possibilities.

Gamma/Zimmy (Gunnerkrigg Court) : 10% (1/10). Lots of people ship them but the fandom and the ship are not easy to write.

Gerda/Little Robber Girl (The Snow Queen) : 11% (1/9). Most people love it, but most fairy tales rewriting are published as original stories.

Te Fiti/Moana (Moana) : 12% (1/8). I’m glad it exists, even if it’s small.

Artemis/Callisto (Greek myth) : 12% (1/8). Canon sens unique, horrible ending canon aussi.

Dawn/Amanda (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) : 12% (1/8). I actually love this one a lot!

Dani/Rahne (Marvel comics) : 12% (1/8). I hope there will be potential in the movie.

Lain/Alice (Serial Ewperiments Lain) : 12% (1/8). It used to be bigger on ffnet, really.

Orihime/Tatsuki (Bleach) : 13% (7/53). Another ship where I didn’t just pass and actually stayed a lot

Leah/Illyana (Marvel Comics) : 14% (1/7). Canon in an AU!

Cassandra/Helen (Greek myth) : 14% (1/7). It was honestly for a challenge but greek myth is so easy for crack ships

Storm/Mystique (X-men movies) : 17% (1/6). The dynamics I like is AoA!Ororo crushing on Raven, and it’s very hard to find, most of these fics are FoeYay for the first timeline.

Natasha (Avengers movies)/Mystique (X-men movies) : 17% (1/6). Quite common for a crossover actually!

Cecile/Merteuil (Les liaisons dangereuses) : 17% (1/6). It’s a friend’s ship, it was nice to write!

Nancy/Yomiko (Read or Die) : 20% (1/5). Another old one.

Dante/Rose (Fullmetal Alchemist 2003) : 20% (1/5). Very visible but so creepy!

Lust/Martel (Fullmetal Alchemist 2003) : 20% (1/5). This one was a random generator.

Maria/Saki (Shin Sekai Yori) : 20% (1/5). Canon but not endgame.

Yuzu/Ururu (Bleach) : 20% (1/5). Bleach phase again. I loved this one for absolutely no reason.

Cinderella/Cinderella’s stepmother (Fairy tales) : 20% (1/5). For an exchange!

Basira Hussain/Daisy Tonner (The Magnus Archives) : 20% (1/5). The fandom is growing and this ship too!

Souma/Kendappa (Rg Veda) : 22% (2/9). Another of the very old ships! It was my first femslash fic, but I found only recently the courage to write it!

Suzie/Gwen (Torchwood) : 22% (2/9). Used to be a bit bigger, bu never as much as I wished. I have only one fic, but in French and English.

Gyokumen/Hwang (Saiyuki) : 25% (1/4). For a kink meme!

Kushana/Nausicaä (Ghibli) : 25% (1/4). I actually really love this one and have another in progress

Chizuru/Rika (Yami no matsuei) : 25% (1/4). Characters of the tome; I’m almost surprised not to be the only one.

Kumi/Yuri (Alien 9) : 25% (1/4). Another ship I really love. I wish they ended together.

Sarah/Lavinia (A Little Princess) : 25% (1/4). For an exchange, a very good prompt asking for power games.

Chizuru/Misato (Bleach) : 50% (1/2). Still the same friend

Cora/Anastasia (Once upon a Time in Wonderland) : 50% (1/2). Yeah, rare mentor/protegee ship! I with the only other fic was not so gen-ish, otherwise it’s good.

Mikuru/Haruhi (Haruhi Suzumiya) : 50% (1/2). It’s actually big outside of AO3?

Akira/Shiina (Naru Taru) : 50% (1/2). Very dark fandom, dark ship, I’m still so sad it’s not a Thing.

Rei/Fukiko (Oniisama e) : 50% (2/4). Romantic canon one-sided incest!

Callisto/Karima (X-men comics) : 67% (2/3). It was just so shippy in Excalibur. With tentacles. But well, obscure like all the Marvel pairings with a few brilliant scenes but no long history.

Old God/Radiant Goddess (Lady of the Shard) : 75% (3/4). Yeah! Enemies with a past, and it’s totally canon! So much my kind of ships! It could be so big if the fandom was bigger!

Dani/Hela (Marvel Comics) : 100% (1/1)

Luna/Valeria (Marvel Comics) : 100% (1/1)

Psylocke/Selene (Marvel Comics) : 100% (1/1)

Karima/Monet (Marvel Comics) : 100% (1/1). All Marvel pairings where I like an interaction once and had to write about it (for Luna and Valeria, it’s even only the potential of an interaction)

Tracy Zenkova/Annabelle Chang (Lastman) : 100% (1/1). I had to write it once, it’s canon after all, even if Annabelle isn’t my favorite.

Anlise/Renge (Namesake) : 100% (1/1). Canon mind control! But secondary characters in a small fandom. I still wish I were not alone.

Agathe/Nagîna ( Mesdemoiselles de la Vengeance) : 100% (1/1). Very small fandom, French historical children’s book. THe ending is a bit too heterosexual for my tastes.

Phoenix/Acolyte/Radiant Goddess/Old God (Lady of the Shard) : 100% (1/1). It’s the canon ending, but quite hard to write, especially when you’re more interested in a specific relationship. Small fandom anyway.

Malen/Rue (Princess Tutu) : 100% (1/1). Character of the week with a crush on the dark magical girl!

Nemu/Rangiku (Bleach) : 100% (1/1)

Chizuru/Lisa (Bleach) : 100% (1/1)

Chizuru/Rangiku (Bleach) : 100% (1/1). Bleach crack ships!

Dante/Lust (Fullmetal Alchemist 2003) : 100% (1/1). Just because it was super-hot

Empowered/Ninjette (Empowered) : 100% (1/1). More crack.

Amber/Bai (Darker than Black) : 100% (1/1). This one I really love, and I wish it would be bigger! To me, Amber is as shippable with Bai as she is with Hei, though in different ways. But it’s almost unheard of.

Jheselbraum/Pyronica (Gravity Falls) : 100% (1/1)

Darlene/Shandra (Gravity Falls) : 100% (1/1). These two are crack pairings written for a personal challenge. I’m nor surprised I’m the only one.

Harriet Jones/Astrid Peth (Doctor Who) : 100% (2/2). From whoniverse1000. Once again it’s only one fic, but I translated it, so two versions.
