Fo4 Companions Accidentally Giving Sole A Bad Haircut
➼ Word Count » 0.8k ➼ Warnings » None ➼ Genre » Platonic/Romantic, Hurt/Comfort? ➼ A/N » It's been a few months since you've requested this so I'm praying you're feeling better now!
You know MacCready messed something up when he begins chuckling nervously, rests a shaky hand on your shoulder, and starts talking way more than usual. He tries to stall you looking in the mirror for as long as possible but, when you eventually do, he’s biting his fist in awkwardness. He won’t lie, this is not his best work, but he never promised perfection. Nevertheless, he feels awful for what he’s done and will let you wear his hat to cover it until it grows back.
Nick will tell you flat out when he messes it up. He'll sigh apologetically, saying he should've just waited to have Ellie cut it or, I don't know, taking you to Kathy and John's Super Salon, right across the street from his agency. He doesn't do anything more to it and takes you straight to the salon to see if you can't salvage it. He feels awful about it, and will never touch your hair again.
Cait knows she isn't going to do a good job with it, but she doesn't tell you that and agrees to cut it anyway. Normally, when she wants to cut her hair, she'll just take any shape object she can get a hold of and start chopping away, and that's exactly what she does with you. She'll sit you down, pull out a pocket knife, and slice whole chunks off at a time. The worst part is that she's got no shame in it.
Preston will gasp quietly and cover his mouth with his hand. He refuses to move and will just stand there, completely still until you ask him what's wrong. He doesn't even know where to begin telling you how badly he's messed up and will instead, just apologize, rest his hands on the back of your shoulders, and rub reassuring circles into them with his thumbs. There are plenty of generals who don't have good hair! Nothing to fret over!
Codsworth will let out a silent 'Oh dear' and turn his buzzsaw off. Eventually, he'll begin reminding you of a separate time when you'd come back from the barber with you're hair all fucked, before explaining that he did exactly that. He tries to be light-hearted about it, but he's just as devastated as you are, possibly even more. He's a Mr. Handy, for Godsake! And he can't even do the basics!
Piper isn't even subtle about it. She'll just immediately begin comparing it to Atomites she's met through investigative journalism. She'll tell you that she's just giving you the 'wasteland special' and you shouldn't feel too upset about it. There are loads of people with this style! So, cheer up! It'll grow back!
Curie doesn't even realize she's messed anything up. In her opinion, any hairstyle any person has looks good. She doesn't quite understand the emotional attachment many people have toward it and just cuts it really short to help with mobility and whatnot. When you explain it to her, however, she starts to feel really guilty and will apologize nonstop.
Strong will just shave you bald. Now you look like him! What's there to be upset over? No support whatsoever from him.
Hancock will also just cut it with his knife, although, he's a lot more sympathetic than Cait. He'll hug you out of remorse and tell you it could be worse. You could be a ghoul and have no hair at all! Look at him! He can't even grow hair anymore so, don't feel too bad about it, alright?
Deacon will immediately fall to the ground in a squat, head in his hands as he simultaneously tries not to laugh or cry. He's cut his own hair so many times before with no issue - he cuts everyone in the Railroad's hair! - and it shatters him to know that he messed up on a craft he thought he perfected. He's supposed to be good at this! After a moment, he'll stand again and find you a wig in his collection for you to keep until your hair grows back. At least now the two of you can be wig buddies? Yay?
X6-88 will hum in defeat when he's messed it up before saying that he told you you should've gone to someone who actually knows how to cut hair. He can't comfort you for shit and probably just blames you for asking for help from someone who can't cut hair.
Old Longfellow knows how to cut hair. So, if he's messed it up, it means he was drunk. But, hey! Now you have a story to tell the folks at The Last Plank! So, he'll take you straight there so you can, hopefully, drink it off and laugh with the other regulars about it. No harm done!
Gage will tell you straight out that he's fucked it up badly, but he's not that concerned with it. If you seem upset, he'll just shrug and tell you it's not as bad as some of the other raiders in this place. If it bothers you that much, though, he'll get you a helmet for you to wear for the time being. It's safer for you anyway.

I am going to answer asks before writing anything properly but…
I have some Ghost x Soap nonsense 😭💕
Tumblr media
Imagine hairdresser!Soap with his signature Mohawk and one of those fancy trimmed beards or maybe a moustache! And he would have tattoos too, he’d of course still have his SAS one, but he’d have picked up some more since leaving the forces. Picture him working in a new salon that’s opened up next to Ghost’s flat.
Simon’s recently been discharged from the army because of an injury and he hasn’t been looking after himself. Truthfully he’s a wreck. He’s lost a little weight because he can’t be bothered going out to get food and he feels guilty ordering in again and again, he’s let his hair grow out into a series of wild blonde tangles and his place is a mess, littered in beer bottles and old takeout packaging. He knows it’s bad, how could he not? He just can’t bring himself to help himself.
Eventually though Price comes round to see Ghost and check up on how he’s doing, he’d have liked to have come sooner but he wasn’t able to get any leave from work. However when he finally sees what’s come of his old friend he goes ballistic! In fact he pulls a one man intervention. He yanks open the closed curtains and forces Ghost to go take a shower and get dressed while he starts clearing away all the mess. Ghost, being the lost soul that he is, just sighs and goes along with it. All of his protests keep falling on deaf ears anyways.
When he’s in the shower he scrubs himself up as best as he can and attempts to run his 2 in 1 through his hair but it doesn’t go very well. He can’t get all the tangles out, he tries his best, but that’s not very good these days. When he steps out of his room, Price says he’s dropping him off at the barber down the road and he’s not to come out until he can see without his hair flopping down over his eyes. After that - and only after that - can he then be allowed to join Price and Gaz for a pint and a bit of dinner down at the pub. Price’s treat of course.
Price stops the car and let’s him get out and only when Price is hightailing it to The Broken Spoke does Simon realise that he’s been dropped off at a salon. He’s never been to a salon before - it never crossed his mind, he always thought it was a woman’s thing. However when he looks through the window he can see another man inside getting his hair cut finished off, alongside a gaggle of women, and that gives him enough courage to walk through the door. He can’t be bothered waking away and explaining the situation to Price. He’d probably take things into his own hands then, and end up with his head shorn down like a sheep.
When he gets in he’s almost blinded by all the bright lights and he doesn’t know where to look. The whole place is covered in plants and big golden sprayed statues and gaudy furniture that reminds of something out of a magazine. He awkwardly walks up to the big wooden counter and sees Soap standing there texting, and waits silently, hoping that he’ll look up from his phone and see him.
He looks over Soap, taking in his big thick mohawk and nicely kept hair and feels a twinge of uneasiness. The man in front of him is so well groomed and… quite handsome and looks so neat and presentable in his pressed white shirt and black jeans and there Simon is in his ratty old work trousers and black T-shirt (he’s pretty sure there’s holes in his clothes to boot). What’s he going to think?
Eventually Soap looks up and widens his eyes. Where’d that guy come from? He’d been so quiet approaching him that Soap hadn’t known anyone had even been there until he saw him. And what a sight he was. Tall…blonde…tattoos…yeah Soap knew he was in trouble. His hair was so long too, it was snarled and caught up in a few knots in places, but right off the bat Soap knew that he could craft it into something that’d highlight the handsome man underneath.
“Hey, uh… I don’t really know how these places work but…can I get a haircut here?”
That voice, Soap thought. He felt like he’d died and gone to heaven. It was so deep and soothing, he could listen to that man talk for hours.
“Course ye can,” Soap replied, answering him before he could fall too far into his daydreams. “I take it you’ve only ever gone to the barbers before?”
“Yeah, normally i just keep it short and get a trim, but uh- I recently fell behind on my appointments. I just got dumped off here and told to get back on top of things,” Ghost explained.
He sounded flat as he explained himself. His momentary pause caused him to look down at the floor. Soap hated that. He didn’t like to see those big blue eyes so filled with sadness. It made it wonder what had been eating him up so badly. Soap also couldn’t help but wonder who had dropped him off. A girlfriend maybe? Boyfriend? He couldn’t tell what this guys deal was yet.
“Well, we all have our moments don’t we. They don’t have to last forever though,” Soap said sympathetically. “Let’s sort you out with something that’ll get you smiling again! Come take a chair, then we can talk about what you want. My name’s Soap by the way.”
Simon moved robotically, he wasn’t sure how to act. He let himself be led over to the chair and tried not to cringe when he caught sight of himself in the giant glowing mirror. It was if it were highlighting every imperfection he had, detailing all the parts of himself he hated. Ugh, is that what the hairdresser would have to look at the whole time?
And wait…did he say his name was Soap?
Well Soap had taken him off guard. The way he looked at Simon made him feel… he didn’t know how it made him feel, couldn’t put his finger on it. Soap was so attentive and didn’t seem to be intimidated by him like most other strangers he met, he seemed warm. Ghost couldn’t help but feel taken by his accent as well. He always had a soft spot for Scottish accents.
“So what is it you’re lookin’ for today?” Soap asked, luring Simon out of his haze. “We’ve got a lot to work with here, I can see it’s a little knotted though. We might need to cut some of this out.”
“Yeah, sorry about that,” Simon mumbled.
He’d never felt so utterly fucking useless - not since he was a child anyway.
"Aw, don't be daft, you don't have to apologise! It can happen to anyone. Just tell me what you feel comfortable with and I'll look after ye."
Simon nodded curtly, concealing the rapid thump that was drumming all the way round his body. I’ll look after you. He didn’t know how much he needed to hear that until the words had left Soap’s mouth, but now that they were out in the open he felt like a wilting flower. It didn't help that Soap was being so touchy either. He was threading his hands through Simon's hair and fussing over all the matts and knots. His touch was like aloe on a stinging burn.
"Uh well, Normally I just go for short back and sides. Don't know how much you can leave on top with all that shit going on though. Doubt you can do much for me beyond getting rid of most of it," Ghost said, finally looking back up at the mirror and watching Soap as he fascinatingly played with the blonde strands.
"You'd be surprised," Soap shrugged, making eye contact with Simon in the mirror so that he could wink. "I'll consider that a challenge. Just you wait, I'll get you back to your old self in no time, handsome."
Simon blinked back at his reflection in the mirror and frowned. Did he just...? Surely he must've misheard. Soap didn't give much away. He just smiled and tapped Simon's arm, gesturing for him to follow him. Follow he did. Navigating the salon with furrowed brows. Why would someone that looked like Soap did...call Simon handsome?
Simon, who had barely washed in the past few weeks and who was surviving on such little sleep that his eye bags were getting bags, was not feeling handsome. He put it down to the hairdresser wanting a bigger tip. He was a good looking man after all, Soap could have anyone he wanted - and it seemed unlikely he'd want the trampy looking sad sack that just came in off the street. He was just flattering him because that's the sort of thing you do to customers, plus he thought, he'd never been to a salon before. Maybe this is just custom.
"Ok, if you take a seat down here then I can get your hair washed."
Simon went back to frowning again.
"Oh, you don't need to bother. I washed it earlier."
"Did ye, aye?" Soap smirked. "What with?"
"What do you bloody mean what with?" Simon grumbled.
"I mean, did you use shampoo and conditioner, or did you use whatever cheap crap you've been able to scrounge off the shelves at tesco express and call it a day?"
Simon hardened his gaze on Soap, but Soap wasn't intimidated. In fact, he only stood up straighter and tilted his chin up impetuously at Simon, reminding him of some of the more ballsy recruits that he'd had command of - even then, none were able to withstand his gaze very long. Soap wasn't budging.
"It's two in one so technically it is shampoo and conditioner," Simon groused.
"Steamin' jesus, you're one of those. Why don't you just sit down and let me work. You can trust me, alright?" Soap said evenly. "If I can stick some conditioner through your hair then I can probably remove the worst of those tangles."
Normally if someone that Ghost didn't know spoke to him like that he'd be inclined to deck them one at worst and walk away at best, but for some reason he found himself sinking into the leather chair before him. It was thickly padded and felt like a cloud underneath his stiff joints, all at once his muscles began to relax and he let himself lie back against the sink. Maybe going to the salon's not so bad.
"Lean up a sec for me, kay?"
Simon willed himself up and jolted when he felt Soap place something soft around his neck. His fingers had delicately brushed against Simon's neck and set off a blazing patch of goosebumps.
"What was that?" Ghost breathed, feeling himself start to panic at the foreign sensation.
"Sorry, sorry, I should've said," Soap soothed, his even tone allowing Simon to relax back against the sink again. "Just putting a towel round your shoulders so you don't get soaked. You're good to just lie back now. I'll take care of you from here. If you have any questions about what I'm doing don't be afraid to ask, ok?"
There it was again. I'll take care of you. It made Ghost's heart fill with a heavy pang of longing. When was the last time someone had taken care of him, when was the last time someone had spoken to him so softly and touched him so gently? God he couldn't remember. It was breaking his brain, rendering him incapable of saying much.
"Ok," he said simply.
"Great! Oh, by the way. What'd you say your name was again?"
"I didn't..." Simon replied, trailing as he remembered that concealing his identity was no longer an issue. "It's Simon."
"Simon," Soap repeated, smiling softly down at Ghost as he stared up at him with wide blue eyes. "Just lay back and close your eyes, Simon. Let me help you relax."
Simon bit his tongue, trying to banish the thought of Soap really helping him to relax from his mind. Something told him it wasn't jsut going to dissapear. Not when those eyes were electrocuting him with those stupid tingles that kept running down his back. It helped that he was encouraged to close his eyes at least, shut them out. It helped some.
Well, it helped until Soap started running the water. The spray fizzled out of the shower head and started cold until it warmed up. Only once it was at a comfortable temperature did Soap start to wave the shower head over Ghost's hair, once again drenching it so that he could combat the snarls. From there though his hands were deeply massaging over Ghost's head and as soon as he felt the gentle scratch of his nails over his scalp, all thoughts of trying to hate being washed were gone.
"Does that feel good?" Soap asked, his voice coming out low and breathy.
Fuck!
Simon almost moaned at the question. In an ideal world he'd get to whimper sweetly in reply.
"Yes. Good," Simon replied, voice coming through strangled. "Carry on."
If this was only the beginning, Simon thought, then he was doomed.
-
ok so I wanna write more for this, and I will later when I have more time but eeeeeee 🥰 I just love it so much!
Imagining Simon weak by the end of the encounter is everything 😫 he'd have been so touch starved for so long that all the attention would be tooo much, but also he'd be melting over it and malfunctioning. I think he'd come off so grumpy and awkward, but Soap would know exactly what he was doing and keep pushing anyway ugh 💕

Came upon some things that I posted in the old blog I accidentally deleted a few yrs. ago, and I think they’re worth revisiting. Have you ever heard of a daytime hotel? The Albergo Diurno Venezia was built in Milan, Italy for rest & rejuvenation for people going about their day or travelers needing a temporary respite. It was also buried for years.
Tumblr media
Beneath what is today the Piazza Oberdan, it had been closed since 2003-
Tumblr media
When the last surviving barber was evicted by the council. But the rest of it, the public baths and most of the other services, had been out of operation since the mid eighties.
Tumblr media
Open everyday from 7am to 11 at night, there was a magnificent lounge, public baths, spas, barber shops, ladies’ hairdressers, manicure and pedicure salons, ironing and wardrobe facilities, a shoe shiners, newsagent, bicycle garage, lost luggage office, travel agency, photography shop, all housed in 1,200 square meters of underground art nouveau splendor.
Tumblr media
In the 1960s, the construction of Milan’s Line 1 subway began, & several rooms, a portion of the atrium and toilets were removed and demolished to make way for it.
Tumblr media
From then on, the Daytime hotel shared its access stairway with the subway.
Tumblr media
It was at this point that it began to lose some of its glamour, leading to its eventual demise.
Tumblr media
The closure of the premises and lack of ventilation and maintenance over the years has led to an extreme deterioration of the space. Most of the wood furniture was sold at the end of the 1990s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At some point, the skylight was also covered in asphalt from the outside.
Tumblr media
The Albergo was repeatedly overlooked for restoration projects and city council funding.
Tumblr media
In 2006 there was a proposal to renew the space to house the Italian film archives, but contracts were never signed and the money went to restore the spires of Milan’s Duomo.
Tumblr media
Original photo of the hair salon.
Tumblr media
It wasn’t until 2013 that the Italian environment fund for the preservation of artistic heritage stepped in and volunteered to step in and literally just start cleaning away the dust of time.
Tumblr media
Over several months, volunteers worked hard to bring it back to life for a series of public open days. For a few days in March 2015, the underground Art Nouveau gem opened to the public.
Tumblr media
An agreement was signed with the city committing to design a formal restoration project, the purpose of the open days was to raise awareness and funds to ensure this pearl of Milan’s buried past can shine once again for the public.
Tumblr media
Guess it never happened b/c according to its site, it’s permanently closed.

hi lovey!
after rereading PhD for the idek-what-number time this week, i’ve made the executive decision that this fic is now canon.
i can imagine it so well. like, after dinner at rossi’s, ppl from the bau slowly start making appointments every once in a while.
Penelope goes to the reader’s salon to get her hair dyed a new funky color and get advice on how to keep her hair healthy and smooth while dyed. Penny proceeds to heavily tip her every time and give her little trinkets to litter the front desk with.
JJ goes for a haircut but ends up being convinced to embrace her slightly wavy hair texture brought on by her pregnancy instead of straightening it every day. (JJ ends up bringing Henry in for his haircuts from then on too.)
since reader did such a good job on Henry’s hair, Hotch is convinced to bring Jack in for his haircut. and when he sees how sweet and gentle she is with his son, Aaron makes himself an appointment. he’s struggled with getting his hair cut because he’s not comfy w people having blades near him after the whole Foyet thing (understandably,) but she makes him calm and takes care of him. he goes to her from then on.
Emily goes to get her bangs trimmed one time and the reader gifts her some dark dry shampoo for her go-bag, bc she was complaining that dry shampoo always leaves a white cast.
While Rossi doesn’t go to her (he has his barber he’s gone to for years,) he does get her a very expensive pair of shears for her birthday, engraved and all.
she basically becomes the bau family hairdresser, and everyone loves her. no one loves her more than Spencer, though, who insists she join him in the shower every chance he can so she will wash his hair for him (and if somethin spicy happens too, he’d never complain.)
ugh. so domestic. it’s perfect. i’m using my judicial powers and calling it canon. *bangs gavel*
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!! no one ever really sends me message like this but I've been dying to get them! i can't believe you think about my fic enough to have little hcs for it holy shit this is the best day ever!
and you're so so so right !!
i also like to think Haley went to hair dressing school and that she would cut his hair for him and so he has a hard time getting the style that he liked for so long now that she's gone. but Y/N would've done such a good job with his hair cause she loves spencers family, her new family<3

ʙᴀᴄᴋꜱᴛᴏʀʏ
Beck had a fairly average life. He had two parents who loved each other, they raised him well, he went to university to get a degree, and then he began to work. But, something about sailing called to him, and Beck took to work on the sea. This meant that despite his desire to settle down at some point, eventually, he never had the chance. He’d meet girls (and sometimes guys) and romance them while he was on land, then he’d disappear for months at a time and when he returned, they’d found someone more reliable. It happened a lot.
He spent a long few years like that, weathering the near-death of his father, and then he met a younger man by the name of Shanks. Shanks was a storm channelled into a body, with more energy than Beck thought he may have ever had, even as a child. Shanks had money, big ideas, and no family. Beck couldn’t ignore the need to bring him close, and make Shanks his business. They’ve been that way ever since. Shanks was there for the death of each of Beck’s parents, and helped him through it, while Beck helped see Shanks through the average hardships of life. They made more friends along the way, but everyone around them knew that it was Beck and Shanks.

Beck works at Shanks’ company. The work isn’t exciting, and can often involve physical labour (Beck refused to climb the ranks to sit in some stuffy office doing paperwork, preferring to be getting his hands dirty and actually see the people that were working hard, making the company’s work possible), but it’s satisfying to go home at the end of the day and know he worked, and that he did it well.

Drinking
Most people would claim that drinking isn’t a hobby, but then most people haven’t encountered Beck, Shanks and their friends. They make it a hobby, a damn dangerous one, but one well worth it.
Shooting
Beck often goes to his local shooting range to practise his aim. His father had grown up in a rural area, and so he’d been capable of shooting, a skill he learned from his father (Beck’s grandfather), and one he passed down to Beck. He doesn’t need it, but it’s a nice way to relax at the end of the week.

Beck’s parents have been dead for a good while. He’s getting old now, and he hadn’t expected his parents to live forever, though they died while he was younger than he would’ve liked. They were much like him in the sense that they settled down to create their family later than most, though certainly not as late as him.

ʜᴇᴀʟᴛʜ
ᴘʜʏꜱɪᴄᴀʟ ʜᴇᴀʟᴛʜ
Beck takes good care of himself. Looking good is important to him, and so he makes an effort to put in the work. Plus, he’s no stranger to manual labour so that certainly helps with keeping him in shape.

ᴍᴇɴᴛᴀʟ ʜᴇᴀʟᴛʜ
Out of all his friends, Beck is likely the most stable. While he would’ve liked to settle down as a younger man, the chance just hasn’t presented itself, and he tries not to dwell on it. That, however, is the biggest thing weighing on him at any moment.
⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅∙∘☽༓☾∘⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅∙⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅
ᴇᴀᴛɪɴɢ
Beck eats fairly well. While he knows people that are far better cooks than he is, his food is always edible. Anyone else would tell you he was a great cook. In particular, he has a secret chilli recipe that his friends have been trying to get their hands on for years with no success.
⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅∙∘☽༓☾∘⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅∙⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅
ᴍᴇᴍᴏʀʏ
Beck has to have a good memory, because he has to remember everything for two men - both him, and Shanks. Shank’s memory is questionable, no matter what the man himself says, and so it’s Beck’s job to keep track of everything.
⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅∙∘☽༓☾∘⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅∙⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅
ꜱʟᴇᴇᴘɪɴɢ
Beck has always been a light sleeper, not for any particular reason he just doesn’t sleep very much, and he’s easy to wake which means he even sleeps less. He’s more than used to being able to function with less sleep though, so it doesn’t much affect him anymore.

Beginning of 2022: Probably the shortest my hair has ever been.
Tumblr media
End of 2022: A friend cut my hair diy.
Tumblr media
2023: First time with mullet.
Tumblr media
And this is my hair rn.
Tumblr media
Okay, no symbol limits for this; let’s go!
2012 – This was the first time I got to decide my own haircut and I went short like my favourite artist at the time, Billie Joe Armstrong. The hairdresser wasn’t keen on it at first so I actually was talked into going from hair down my back to shoulder length. Then I arrived back after two months and asked for it shorter and so I finally got this. I still remember it fondly.
2014 – When I was younger I had a family hairdresser, so this was done by the same person who did my BJA hair two years prior. This time I gave her a picture of Alexander William Gaskarth from All Time Low and I recall this grinning immensely afterwards and taking more selfies I’d ever done. I was so euphoric I get warm inside just thinking about it.
2016 – This was after a long while growing my hair out to shoulder length again and it was a hot summer day. I was getting so tired of my hair so you guessed it: I took yet another bandmember picture with me to the family hairdresser – this time I believe it was Kier Kemp from then Fearless Vampire Killers – and got my first sidecut. I quite enjoyed it and I actually had it for a long while.
2021 – Somewhere between 2018 and 2021 I decided to grow my hair long and only colour it sparely so to let it heal so it was now very long and feminine looking. When I then came out to myself as nonbinary in march 2021 however I started dreaming about cutting it short again when I fooled around with a picrew base one day and really felt connected to this bleach blond short hairdo. Now living in a new city I went to a hairdresser nearby with the same picture of Alex from 2016 and asked for that haircut. After it was cut I went home to bleach it myself. I wasn’t as euphoric as the first time but I felt like myself again with shortish hair.
2022 – Now this one is interesting because I had two different yet similar short hairstyles this year. The first was at the beginning of the year (February) where I wanted to get something even more masculine to see if I liked it. I decided on something between a fauxhawk and an undercut and scrambled lots of pictures for this to give my hairdresser (no bandmembers this time). It was yet again a new place since I wanted to go to a “real” barber yet ended up with a compromise being that I paid for a ‘male cut’ by an all gender hairdresser. I remember finding it so strange feeling the wind in my neck and not sure what to think about it. I was a bit relieved I still had some fringe since up to this point I had never not have some sort of heavy fringe (which of course will make it the first time that has happened if I go with a buzz cut). The second picture is from September when my undercut started growing out again. I wasn’t keen on going back to the same barber so I went hairdresser shopping but quickly stopped again when I was discriminated against this one place (he refused to cut my hair since I wasn’t masculine enough). So I asked a friend I knew cut his own hair and this was what we came up with. I didn’t feel ready for as short a hairdo as last time and missed my fringe so it got a bit more choppy yet I liked it for what it was.
2023 – I needed some change this year so I decided to go for one of two haircuts – either I’d do a mullet or a buzzcut. My reasoning for going with a mullet at the beginning of the year instead was that it would be easier to change my mind and cut the rest of for a buzzcut later than the other way around. You know what – I felt pretty euphoric about this one as well but a bit less so than in 2016. I felt it was a nice change of pace and it has been very nice keeping the mullet up to this point (has gotten it cut twice – was sadly less keen about it the second time). I still have the mullet now (last picture) but it is just brown-yellow-green instead of red-black.

Bad heir day
Tumblr media
Layla panicked, trying to wrestle the mane of curls in her reflection into some kind of order. She'd tried everything - hot water, cold water, ashes, vine stalks, egg whites, herbs, and every other unguent the apothecary could throw at her - but all had been to no avail. Her hair was a forest that defied the axe, an overgrown jungle that consumed all those who sought to tame it.
It was a lost cause, with only half an hour to go before the royal retinue arrived downstairs. Layla resigned herself to that. She had tried and failed to keep it neat for twenty years, and there was no chance of a sudden breakthrough now.
She eyed the scissors laid out for her visitor, and considered quickly lopping the whole lot off, but that would hardly spare her from embarrassment when the princess arrived. Layla felt a similar temptation roughly once a month, but she knew it would just cause different problems down the line.
Nothing so dramatic, she told herself, forcing her gaze back to the mirror in front of her. She would simply have to move. Today's humiliation was inevitable, but she could sit through the judgement in silence, packing a bag for the journey in her mind, and be on the road before the evening grew dark. A self-imposed exile, and probably all the better for it. It had taken this nadir to spur her on her way, but now Layla wondered if this choice was half her lifetime overdue.
As realms went, Tepaj had many charms, from its acres of palatial parkland to its teardrop lakes, where shimmering shoals painted crystal clear waters with delicate rainbow strokes. It could even be idyllic, at times, as Layla would freely admit. But she knew that it had never held her happily ever after. She had never understood why she'd been born here in the first place, looking like this.
There were kingdoms where hair wasn't important. Realms where it wasn't sacred, just another body part, not the flowing embodiment of a soul. Places that were not Tepaj. Here, hair was everything: the other subjects carried theirs perfectly, with confidence, with flair, a heart they wore above their sleeves. It was their self-portrait, their masterpiece.
Everybody had to style their own: to touch another's hair was seen as intensely personal, reserved for parents, children, lovers, and not the paid touch of a professional. In their absence, everyone in Tepaj had become a barber, a hairdresser, with most single adults left to do their own, as well as that of any dependents. It had become an attractive quality, one sought out in partners: eligible suitors would admire the trim of their potential other halves, knowing that they might be responsible for theirs. At the very least, it was easier to have somebody else to do the back.
But Princess Aseji was breaking that taboo. After generations of tradition, she was defying the edicts of her ancestors, who had played out the same scene in their palace bedchambers: sat before a vanity with pearl-encrusted scissors and a gilded fine-toothed comb, their maidservants dismissed as they performed this task alone. She intended to be a different sort of ruler, one who connected with her subjects; one who touched her people's hearts.
When she had come of age, the Barber Princess had set out on a tour of the kingdom, washing and cutting the hair of one randomly chosen host in every village that she passed. Her legend had spread before her, a rich fruit that grew along the grapevine, a hundred retellings with no need for embellishment. Princess Aseji was an icon, her own hair full and lustrous, a multi-coloured silken tapestry, an tiara woven from copper and gold. She was the complete opposite to Layla, whose frizzy mane would never behave.
But last week, it had been Layla's name drawn out of the crown, and her turn to host the princess in her hair and in her home. A week to prepare, as if there was anything that could be done to get that chaos under control. She had been dreading this moment, ever since she received the letter with the date and time, knowing that the honour others dreamt about would be her nightmare come true.
Meeting the princess at all was daunting enough: besides her title, she was known to be flawlessly beautiful, with what Layla had heard was the most glorious head of hair in the realm, a perfect set of curls to suit a crown. But to sit with her up close, with all of the focus upon Layla's flaws, intimately exposing each and every contrast... it sounded like her idea of torture.
Still, she'd chosen her, and she was on her way right now. With one last glance in the mirror, Layla forced herself to give up on a lost cause and head downstairs, hoping that she could at least prove acceptable as a host in other ways. It was difficult to pull her gaze away, like a painting of some abstract horror that compelled her to keep staring through its empty eyes. As if the picture couldn't get any worse, her cheeks had started glowing red.
Layla was used to the taste of embarrassment. In a culture where hair was everything, she was ashamed to step outside on most days when it stuck out more to the left than the right, or changed its volume or kinks wildly depending on the humidity. She had that monthly temptation to cut it all off and go shaven-headed, with none of the hassle - she imagined it must be so clean, to just trim the stubble evenly - but she'd never had the courage.
She wore headscarves instead: not wanting anyone to see, let alone the perfect princess, up close and personal. But here they were, stepping into her home, Princess Aseji herself ushered over the threshold. She was every bit the legend in the flesh, and in the hair, a flowing veil that followed her in from outside, almost weightless, as if it had a life of its own, but not in the way that Layla's did. Here they were, and here it was.
"I'd love hair like yours," the Barber Princess said, almost as soon as they'd sat down, selecting a brush from her bag. They weren't gold, Layla noticed. Just high quality. "It's so full of life."
"It's resilient, your grace, I'll grant you that." Layla wasn't sure how to disagree with a princess, even when she was clearly lying for her benefit. "Like a weed. It grows on its own."
"I've had many suitors in the past year," Aseji continued, untangling some knots, breaking down some boundaries. "They often bring me rare, delicate flowers, which they have the originality to compare to my beauty. But I can never keep the things alive. It's a tragedy, really, to bloom so briefly in captivity. I think I would sooner be a weed, a dandelion, thriving wild and free."
"You don't need to say that, your grace, honestly. I know what it's like. I'm used to it."
"No, I mean it. I envy you."
Something in her voice suggested that she really did. Princess Aseji, the Barber Princess, envious of her. If she'd started with the scissors, Layla might have lost an ear with the way she turned around.
"What do you mean?" She caught herself. "I'm sorry, your grace, it's just... I've always envied you. Your hair is incredible."
"Ah, that's disappointing to hear. I thought it was fairly credible."
"You've lost me, I'm afraid." This wasn't going the way she had expected at all.
"Can you keep a secret?"
Layla thought about it. "I've been keeping my own hair hidden for half of my life."
"Excellent. I mean, that's awfully sad and all, but I suppose that means that I can trust you with mine."
She reached up and tugged her forelocks, a bizarre role reversal made all the more surprising by the way the whole thing came away with her unveiling hand. Layla's jaw dropped as the princess's flowing mane was discarded on her freshly swept floor, revealing a sleek, bald head beneath. She was still beautiful, but not in the way that people knew her, and not in a way that Tepaj recognised.
"What do you think?" Layla had fallen completely silent, so Princess Aseji took the opportunity to twirl around in front of her, as if showing off a new ballgown. The mirrors she'd set out for their appointment covered every angle, and she stared at the naked skin: so smooth at her crown, or where her crown might sit, but revealing the shape of her skull at the rear, like the shadows that drew faces on the surface of the moon. Layla was hypnotised by both.
"I... it's like nothing that I've ever seen before."
"Do you want to know the rest of it?" She gestured to her hair, the wig, the lie that had fooled a kingdom. "I have several of these, different lengths to mark the passing of time, and different styles for different seasons. It's easier than having to go through the hassle of coaxing them into shape each day, wouldn't you agree?"
"Where do you get them from?" Layla wondered if she could pull off the same trick. Perhaps she could shave after all, and just get away with one of these. "If you don't mind me asking."
"I make them myself." The princess smiled. "It sounds horrifically gruesome when I say it aloud, but I use the hair from my visits. One lock from each person, woven together in a rainbow carpet. See, you all admire the beauty of my hair, but it's yours. It's all of you."
Layla didn't know where to begin with that revelation. There were so many strands to unravel, so many loose ends to tie off. "Is that why you started doing it, your visits? To... harvest material?"
"Fine, it sounds even more gruesome when you say it." She ran a hand across her scalp. "No, I had a wig made for me as a child, my parents wanting to cover up my shame before I realised it myself. I was already covered there. I just took joy in styling hair for others, because I couldn't do it for myself. Then I had the idea to become them, rather than letting all those cuttings go to waste. To connect with my people. To make them a part of me, and let them see the beauty that was theirs all along."
"That's awful."
"I know, it's probably terribly, terribly wrong, but I thought it made it sound quite poetic."
"Not the hair, I mean... your parents. Their graces. They hid you away. You couldn't help the way you were."
Aseji gave a most un-princess-like shrug. "I've been doing it for them, ever since I was old enough to realise."
"I thought I was hiding," Layla realised. "Rarely leaving the house, wearing headscarves to conceal the worst on rainy days. But you've been hiding all your life, just in plain sight."
"And I will always have to. I can walk the streets to showers of admiration, but how could I ever find a partner, without them realising the truth? How can I let somebody love me for my artificial beauty? How could I ever find a way to explain the lie?"
"You showed me."
"It's the first time I haven't felt self-conscious." She paused, considering it. "If you don't mind me saying, I think you were trembling enough for the both of us."
"You noticed?"
"My hands were in your scalp."
"Oh, right." Layla was also thinking. Those nerves had been replaced with shock, and now a sort of warmth that she couldn't quite place, a stirring of emotion that she'd never felt before. She was ready to continue with their appointment. "You know, I've often thought about shaving my hair off. Do you think you could do the same for me?"
"Make you a wig?"
She nodded. "With my own hair, although I wouldn't begrudge you a strand or two for your own, if you really do want it. You're welcome to my look, if only I can have yours in return."
"You genuinely envy me? Still, after all that I've shown you?"
"Of course. I'm happy to keep your secret, if you want to keep it hidden, but I think that you should keep mine too. Hiding alone is miserable. I would much prefer that we hide together."
"I'd like that," the princess said, running her fingers through the back of her unruly mane. Her touch was gentle, caring, as if it was the softest velvet that she'd ever felt. "I think that I would like that a lot."

I'll Go Easy On You {Steve Harrington}
Tumblr media
Plot: After the events of Vecna, Hawkins is still finding its feet and with all the hairdressers/barbers in town being closed... Steve needs a haircut.
Character: Steve Harrington x Reader
He was practically hyperventilating as he sat in the dining chair, towel wrapped around his shoulders. You rifled through the bag you had sitting on the table, producing various items such as a comb, scissors, a spray bottle and others. Steve eyed them anxiously, "You sure you know what you're doing?"
You shrugged, "I mean, how hard can it be?"
He didn't like your answer.
He stood up, "That's it, I don't need a haircut!" As he said it, strands of his hair fell across his forehead, covering his eyes. He'd been having issues with his hair for a few weeks but after Vecna, the town was pretty much destroyed which obviously meant that a lot of shops and businesses were destroyed too.
All of the hairdressers and barbers were closed, waiting for refurbishments, so there was no way for Steve to get a haircut unless he travelled miles and miles to a different town which he just didn't want to do. His usual barber, who he trusted with his life, had packed up and left Hawkins after Vecna split the town in two. He decided it wasn't worth trying to salvage his shop so moved elsewhere. When Steve learned about him moving on, he could've cried. Dustin swore he saw a tear in his eye actually.
Steve had put it off and put it off hoping and praying that a hairdresser or a barber would waltz back into Hawkins but they never came and his hair was getting too long, too in the way and too annoying. It was you who'd proposed the idea to him a week or so ago.
"Why don't you let me cut your hair, Steve? It's clearly annoying you."
He had initially refused. He knew that you didn't know how to cut hair and he didn't want to take that risk. However, he'd tried asking around those that were left in Hawkins (which wasn't many) if they had any hair cutting skills, they didn't. So eventually, Steve caved and said yes to you cutting his hair. He wasn't happy about it but he knew it needed done and he trusted you as a person, maybe not with his hair, but it would have to do.
That morning, the two of you had went shopping and had gotten a load of haircutting things. Steve picked some out that he knew his usual barber would use, certain scissors and things, while you picked up some other bits and bobs.
"Steve, sit down," you told him as you picked up the spray bottle and filled it with water, "It'll be fine. I'll go easy on you, I promise."
"You can't promise that!" My god, he was so stressed, pacing the kitchen hands fidgeting, "Do you even know what length is perfect?"
You rolled your eyes at him, "How about I cut little bits at a time and you can check to make sure I don't go too short?"
Steve considered this for a moment before taking a breath, "Okay, yeah. Yeah that sounds doable." He sat down and continued taking deep breaths.
"Aren't half dramatic are you?" You asked as you began to spray his hair until it was damp, "It's okay. It'll grow back if I mess it-"
"Don't even finish that sentence," he said with grit teeth, "You aren't going to mess it up, it'll be perfect."
You laughed at him, it was quite a funny sight to see. He was so anxious about it which wasn't funny but simultaneously you couldn't help but giggle at his discomfort when he heard the snip of scissors and could see the small tufts that fell from them, "Remember a bit at a time!"
He grabbed the mirror from the table and took a long hard look before releasing a long breath, "You're actually doing pretty good... Keep going."
After a while, you were getting bored with how long it was taking, "You know, if you let me use the buzzers, I'd be faster. It would let me get more hair off faster. Means I could shape it at the back properly too."
Steve mulled it over for a minute before agreeing, "Okay... Since you're doing pretty good. Just don't lean too hard or you'll take out a chunk of my precious hair."
You swatted his words away with your hand as you got out the clippers and plugged them in. It started off fine, you weren't leaning too hard, everything was going smoothly until a rogue strand of Steve's hair blew into your face, tickling your nose and-
"ACHOO!" You hadn't meant it, you really didn't. The sneeze gave you no time to prepare and... your hand slipped, "Oh fuck."
Steve's face fell, "What do you mean 'oh fuck'? What happened? What did you do?" He grabbed the mirror trying to see the back of his head, "What did you do?!"
"Good news first... it looks perfect from the front."
"And the back?" His hands flew up to feel the back of his head where there was now an indent into his perfect hair, a patch shaved clean off, short like a buzz cut. It was only about an inch long but it was noticeable, "(y/n)..."
"You should be able to hide it!" You exclaimed quickly, abandoning the clippers on the worktop as Steve stood up, "You know, I think a hat would be a good look for you! A good beanie!"
"In the middle of summer?!" Steve was raging, his eyes were wide as he looked at you, "Did you shave a patch of my hair off?" His voice was tense as though he didn't want to believe what he already knew.
"It looks so good from the front!" You said quickly as you scrambled to collect your things, "Oh, look at the time! I've got to go! See you later, bye!"

Do you change your Tav's appearance throughout the game? Rn I'm playing with Khal'ian hair getting progressively longer throughout the game and adding scars to Kira
-githzerai anon
I did try but I have a problem of getting too attached to certain looks and everything else feels wrong when I change it.
Which doesn't make sense since I can easily change the companions looks whenever but eh.
That is a cool concept tho. Since most of my Tavs are nobility who never really been in a battlefield before, I might have their hair cut short and remove the make up by act 2 or 3 to show the battle adaption aspect.
Gale's beard gets thicker, his hair would probably get longer.
Karlach has a side shave so it should grow out and become very noticable by act 3.
Shadowheart's bangs need constant trimming too.
It's a hair saloon i swear to god, forget multieclassing into warlock, someone should multieclass into barber.
The scar idea is cool. Also, they could get new tattoos throughout the game. Or maybe have their past tattoos removed If they used to worship a certain god but strayed away.
Act 1 they start all proper and pristine, act 2 they're completely unkempt and half of them have outgrowth while the other half took scissors and went ham one night, by Act 3 their dishevelled looks slowly fades away as they rejoin society and can now get proper clothes, a shower and a hairdresser. So embracing their new style.

Yokohama’s Oldest Covered Market Street
I am not a fan of big shopping malls, Costco, etc. Although I have never been to a farmer’s market, the closest equivalent for urban neighborhoods in Japan might be the classic shopping arcades called “shotengai”. Such shotengai can be found throughout Japan, although their numbers are dwindling as shoppers transition to the shiny glitz of shopping centers with huge parking lots.
Shotengai, on the other hand, are restricted to pedestrians and bicycles, are full of specialty shops including cafes, coffee shops, green tea shops, shops selling traditional bed linen (futon shops), elderly lady’s fashion shops, wig shops, cheap fruit shops, high-end fruit shops, fresh seafood, Korean spice shops, Chinese noodle shops, Japanese noodle shops, pharmacies, liquor shops, Japanese liquor (osake) shops, pachinko (gambling) parlors, barbers, hairdressers, comic book shops, used-book shops, street-food stalls, bakeries, restaurants, bars, and much, much more.
Tourists don’t visit this particular shotengai since it is off the beaten path. The shotengai caters mostly to locals including a mix of Japanese, ethnic Koreans and Chinese, and the occasional westerner who might live nearby.
On this photo shoot I enjoyed chatting with various shop owners who were asked to pet my border collie. In our conversations, I learned that some owners have been running their shops in the family for over 70 years!
This is the side of Japan I love the most: older generations of down-to-earth, hard-working, entrepreneurs with an in-depth knowledge of their particular market and wares, and their open attitude to sharing their wisdom related to the local neighborhood and life in general.
The Yokohama Bashi Street Market organically grew into a proper market over time between 1868 and 1912. The market was destroyed in WWII fire raids, and rebuilt in 1948 with various improvements over the years.

National Hair Day
Maybe every day can’t be a good hair day but in celebration of National Hair Day, this one certainly can be. Join in and get ready to learn and appreciate everything fun and exciting that has to do with hair!
History of National Hair Day
Hair has been the crowning glory of the human head perhaps since the very beginning of time! In fact, researchers think the comb was used by ancient Egyptians as far back as 5500 BC. The hairbrush took a bit longer to come out though, and the Kent Hairbrush Company is recorded as having started in 1777 in Hertfordshire, England.
While wealthy people have been having their hair done for centuries, early on this was typically done either by a family member or perhaps by a personal servant.
By the mid-1700s, however, the first person to have declared himself a ‘professional’ hairdresser in Europe was Legros de Rumigny who worked for the French court. In fact, he wrote a book on hairdressing that included pictures of the unique hairstyles that he had designed. The book was called Art de la Coiffure des Dames, which can be translated to The Art of Hairstyles for Ladies.
National Hair Day is a bit newer on the scene and is just beginning to develop its own history. Founded in 2017 by NuMe, a hair care company, this day is all about celebrating the styling tools and hair care products that help to make each person’s hair as beautiful as possible.
Whether hair is straight, wavy, curly or kinky, there are a myriad of different products and tools that can help to enhance the natural texture of hair while making it look its very best. And National Hair Day is the best time for it!
How to Celebrate National Hair Day
Wondering how to celebrate and enjoy this delightful day? There are all kinds of ways! Get creative on your own, or try out some of these ideas that can be enjoyed in honor of National Hair Day:
Get a Haircut
Make an appointment at the barber or hair salon in honor of National Hair Day! Get that new ‘do that you’ve been thinking about, whether chopping it short, going for layers, adding bangs or fringe, or turning into a platinum blonde inspired by Marilyn Monroe. Don’t be afraid to go for the full shampoo, cut, color and style. The sky’s the limit when it comes to what kind of fun that can be had on National Hair Day.
Consider a New Hairstyle
Of course, National Hair Day doesn’t mean it’s necessary to go to extremes. Even those who aren’t ready for a new cut or color might be able to play around with their hair a bit on this day. Maybe start by making the part of your hair on the other side!
This is also a great time to learn a new skill that is related to hair styling. Perhaps that might be learning how to make a regular braid, a French braid or a Fishtail Braid. YouTube and other online videos can act as an excellent resource for learning with easy, step by step tutorials on how to create a new hairstyle.
Try Out Some New Hair Care Products
National Hair Day is the ideal time to pop into the beauty supply store and find out what’s new in the world of hair care products and styling tools. Perhaps pick up a new brand of mousse or heat protectant spray. Try out a new curling iron, blow dryer or hair straightener. Or even consider getting a fun new color for hair, whether temporary or permanent.
Buy a New Hairbrush
Some hairstylists say that a typical person needs to replace their hairbrush every six months to a year. Of course, this depends on how often it is used, how much product the person uses, how long their hair is and even how often they clean their hair brushes.
It’s also possible that some people have simply been using the wrong kind of hairbrush for their particular type of hair. Those who are in the market for a new hairbrush might want to consider one of these styles in celebration of National Hair Day:
Curly Hair. Many people say that curly hair should never be brushed, but if it’s necessary for detangling, then use a special cushion brush that has nylon bristles to keep the curls from getting frizzy and knotted.
Frizzy Hair. This is a complicated hair type and the best type of hair brush will tame that frizz and keep it in place. Try using a hairbrush that has bristles made of boar. The natural bristles help to distribute the hair oils more evenly throughout the hair.
Blow-Dry Brushes. People who blow dry their hair on a regular basis need special tools to keep their hair happy and healthy. The best type for blow drying are brushes that are made from ceramic and have ionic properties that repel water to shorten the drying time and keep the hair from getting overly damaged.
Teasing Brush. Looking for more volume? A special boar’s hair and nylon teaching brush gets close to the scalp to get that hair high. Choose one that has a pointed handle which can be used for creating parts or separating strands of hair.
Enjoy Some New Hair Accessories
Pop into an accessory shop or department store and check out what’s on offer these days for hair accessories. Ribbons, ponytail holders, barrettes, clips and so many other delightful products provide tons of different options for wearing the hair in unique ways. Try securing a ponytail in the back, a braid, two buns on the sides, or even a popular banana clip to hold the hair back from the face.
Little girls can get away with a brand new hair bow in honor of National Hair Day! Something colorful like Jojo’s Bows would be a fun and delightful addition to a hairstyle today, keeping things snazzy.

The vintage barber chair is perfect for your salon or barber shop because it has a padded seat that promotes comfort. It also has a lockable hydraulic pump and a footrest, which adds more comfort. Also, the great design and the high-quality PU leather cover make the entire chair wholesome.

Please note that you must never use styling chairs for massaging. It’s mainly because the vibrations can deliberately affect the precision of the stylist. And in return, your stylist will end up providing a crooked hairstyle to your client. Worst of all, it could end up in an unpleasant scissors slippage.
But when you have a pedicure massage chair at your salon, your clients can enjoy a full body massage. These robotic massage chairs can provide a soothing massage, making your clients feel relaxed after a tiring day.

The only advice for hair i can give (which might be obvious but like)
Invest in haircare made by POC. Companies that were started by POC, as its made for thicker hair.
I have 3b hair, not the thickest, but also very curly and unruly. The first time i went to a Black-owned hairdresser, my barber looked at me and instantly knew that i was just using the wrong haircare.
Sorry if this doesn't help at all but my frizz+snarling+discomfort has been alot better since i stopped using Dove lol
No it does, I think my hairs a 3C so not much curlier than yours. But I grew up with white parents so I never learned how to do my hair. They used to have the straighten my hair or cut it cause no salons near me knew how to style curls. I’ll try some of these tips, thanks Leafy ❤️
