Hello, Bottom (Newt x Reader)
Another high school AU where Y/n always calls Newt “bottom” due to his locker that’s below hers. One day, after years of pining and fretfulness, he finds confidence from deep within and sasses back.
“Hey, bottom.” You comment, rifling through your locker.
Newt huffs and rolls his eyes. You laugh as he slams his locker door. “God, I hate that you call me that.”
“Well, you are, aren’t you? You have the bottom locker.”
Newt stands and leans against the wall. “I always enjoy these conversations of ours. Gives me something to look forward to in between classes.”
“Glad I could be of such service.”
Meanwhile, Thomas and Minho stand by the wall, waiting for Newt to finish with his things.
“It’s nice he’s talking to her.” Minho shrugs. “Remember the two years he couldn’t say a word so it was just awkward silence whenever he had to squat down beneath her?”
“Yeah,” Thomas chuckles, “that was funny. But I would’ve thought he’d have the guts to ask her out by now.”
“It’s Newt.” Minho counters. “He’s like, the most passive person ever. He overthinks everything. What if she says no?” He mimics Newt in a bad rendition of a British accent, “What if she doesn’t like me back? Then it’ll just be awkward and she’ll hate me and it’ll be so embarrassing!”
“Okay,” Thomas says, “but Y/n’s gotta like him back. Who else makes funny sexual innuendos at their locker neighbor? I just ignore mine.”
“True.”
Newt walked over to his friends, an odd pep in his step. “Hey guys,” he chirps, “what’s up?”
“The sky.” Thomas says while Minho, at the same time adds, “Not your relationship with Y/n.” Thomas lets out a loud laugh and high- fives Minho.
Newt huffs and rolls his eyes. “Bug off.”
“She’s friends with Sonya.” Thomas offers, “Can’t you just ask your sister?”
“No!” Newt shudders at the thought. “That would be too embarrassing.”
“But then you would have a definitive answer.”
“I guess,” Newt sighs.
“Well I don’t know much about girls,” Thomas says, “but why don’t you just ask her out? You guys already talk a lot; it’s just the next step.”
“Ugh! You don’t understand.” Newt whines, clearly frustrated. “I like her too much to put our friendship on the line.”
“Friendship?” Thomas frowns. “What friendship? You guys are just locker buddies.”
“We have History together!”
“Do you guys talk in History?”
Newt groans then admits, “Sometimes. Not all the time… but sometimes.”
“Just try to be more confident next time.”
“I’ll try.”
**
“Hello bottom!” You greets.
Newt lifts an eyebrow, Minho’s words coming back to him. A shot of confidence races through him. “I can assure you, I am not a bottom.”
Your mouth falls open and you can’t think of a retaliation. Slowly, you shut your locker and look down at the boy who is smirking up at you.
“Pardon?”
Newt chuckles and stands heart- beatingly close to you. “You heard me.”
“It’s a busy hallway. Please repeat it.”
“I said,” Newt breathes, “I am most certainly not a bottom.”
You took a deep breath. “Anyway to prove it?”
“How about I take you out Friday night and I’ll show you?”
“I have been waiting so long for you to ask that.”
“Really?” Newt blinks, taken aback.
“Yeah.” You smile, “You’re really fun to hang out with. Not to mention cute.”
Newt smiles back, blushing slightly. He glances down at his feet before looking up and meeting your gaze. “I’ve had a crush on you for over three years.”
“Are you kidding me?” Your mouth falls open. “I’ve liked you for three years! Why didn’t we go on a date sooner?”
“I… have no idea.”
“Well, I gotta get to class.” You say, “I’ll see you Friday?”
“Yeah. I’ll see you Friday.” Newt grins.
“Okay.”
“Okay.”
After a moment of standing still, not wanting to leave Newt, you reluctantly step away. “Bye.” You wave to him, joining your friends as you head off to class.
Newt floats over to Thomas and Minho, the latter who says, “You idiot! I told you she liked you!”
“Yeah, you were right.” Newt’s lovesick smile never faded. “She likes me.”

The start of a new social season, although intended, supposedly, to be a cause for joy, feels rather more like a fierce uprising of dread, not celebration. Across the ton, young maidens find themselves new entrees– or, entrants– to the marriage mart. This game of rings and dances, men with ambition and women with more, will end in blissful happiness or deepest discontent. And all will be witnessed by every worthy family from one corner of the country to the next.
If all goes according to plan, an eligible would-be bride will find herself engaged to a man she loves, a man in possession of a handsome fortune and a sterling reputation. If luck slips past her, she’ll settle for someone decent, or someone without any income at all. If nothing goes in her favor, her first year in society will not be her last as a single woman. She will have to repeat her attempt the next year, this time without the glimmering aura of a new arrival, and hope that something within her has changed enough to attract a proposal. Otherwise, she will sink to the bottom of the pile of dance cards, ignored, abandoned, and grown up into a spinster. All that hard work gone to waste.
You’ve heard many young women discuss the marriage mart with nothing short of absolute terror in their voices. A good opening season can seal a girl’s fate forever. Attracting the eye of a worthy man is an impossible task for all but the best of the rosebuds, or so it seems. Most of us will settle for something halfway decent– a tidy sum per annum but nothing extravagant, a man with casual disinterest but nothing harsh. Something that can be shaped into something good, or at least ignored in favor of not being alone. Such is the romance of a married life.
You, however, hope to extract a little more out of the whole affair. As the Duchess of Hastings, you have no need for money. A marriage would be nice, the final touch on the portrait of a successful lady, but you do not require the financial stability of a husband. You have plenty of money and plenty of friends. You will inherit your estate. If you look for a husband, you will look only for love.
One would think, then, that entering your first season among the eligible women of the ton would be bereft of the panic permeating through most of your friends in search of husbands. However, when you line up with the rest of the young women to be presented to the Queen at the start of the season, you find that it couldn’t be less true.
Your stomach is in knots, even as you sweep confidently through the corridor to wait outside the door. The white feather in your hair stands tall and proud. Your dress is crisp and finely stitched, the highest of fashion yet never gaudy. You attract stares wherever you go– from the other girls, envious and jealous and heartsick, from the men, longing and cutthroat and mercenary– but pretend they don’t phase you in the slightest. As duchess, you’ve had plenty of time to grow accustomed to onlookers. You won’t allow them to interfere with you on this all important day.
At last, your name is called, and you enter the throne room, your mother behind you. You keep your steps small but light, and seem to float towards your queen. When the time is right, you sink into an elegant curtsy. The moment seems to last forever, your knees bent, your hands shaking slightly, but when the queen calls you to stand, you look up to find her smiling benevolently at you.
“I believe I have found my diamond of the season,” she announces.
The room erupts in polite applause, and you do your best to smother a smile that’s entirely too giddy to be proper. As you retreat from the room, you gaze at the faces surrounding you, trying to remember which ones look genuinely happy for you and which seem to be identifying a prize pig for the slaughter. When the town gossips all gather later to share their thoughts on today’s proceedings, you’re certain that some of them will attempt to discredit you, saying that of course the queen would choose the duchess as her diamond, but you know just as well as all of them that you deserve the honor today. You were the best of everyone here, and it’s plain to see.
Among all of them, your gaze catches on a singular man, almost lost in the crowd from all the bodies packed together but no less entrancing. What strikes you the most is that his face seems kind, and his eyes sparkle with pride as they watch you go. Pride for you, for your accomplishments. As if he couldn’t be more delighted that you of all people were named the season’s diamond.
Then you’re gone from the room, and the kind man is no longer before you. Still, you puzzle over the encounter long after your carriage takes you home. You don’t believe you recognize him, but that doesn’t mean anything to sway you towards any decision. An image of the young man swims in your mind– short, dirty blond hair, an upturned mouth, dark eyes, his face almost spritely. Clever, for sure.
You know better than to mess with clever men. Clever men are the type to try and twist your mind, convince you that they only love you then attempt to make off with your money. You know full well what marriage to you will offer any would-be suitor. This season, you may be looking for affection, but every man in the room will be after your fortune. The task of finding someone who truly cares for you will be a difficult one indeed.
So, clever men or not, you’ll have to keep your heart under close guard. When the first ball of the season comes to be, you don one of your finest dresses, and firmly admonish yourself to be careful. The game of hearts is not one that you lose. Either you win, or you destroy yourself.
You time your arrival carefully, so as to make the best entrance, and your efforts are rewarded. From the moment you’re announced, all eyes turn to you. Were it not for your extensive experience with being scrutinized in the grand magnifying lens that is the ton, you’d be nervous to have that many people looking at you. Even still, you can’t pretend you don’t feel a small flutter in your stomach.
It gets easier once you sweep further into the room, once people start smiling at you again, when the conversation picks up and you’re asked for your first dance of the evening, which you accept. Your partner is a charming man named Minho– dark hair, witty eyes, an excellent sense of humor. He’s athletic and a decent dancer, and by the time the music stops, you’re back to your usual self again. You can’t stop yourself from mentally sizing up your dance partner. He seems nice, and you wouldn’t be bored around him, at least. His family owns land. Although he’s not of your precise social standing, few are, and he’s close enough to you that it would be a respectable match.
Still– still, you think to yourself, as you move away from the center of the floor once more to consider your dance card, it’s not quite enough. You want love, you want a spark, and you didn’t quite get that with Minho. There are plenty of eligible suitors here, though, and many more balls to come. You’ll have other opportunities to select a match.
A few dances later, though, your feet are beginning to feel heavy and you’re still no closer to finding someone of interest than you were at the start. A good lady of extensive training such as yourself should have no problem dancing the entire night through with a pleasant smile on her face, but you’re still human, still tired, and your charming demeanor is beginning to pinch at the seams before long.
The music for the latest dance ends, and you curtsy to your partner, praying silently that no one else will be looking to fill your dance card for the next rotation. However, when you turn around, you’re greeted with the sight of many anxious faces. Something inside you wilts, perhaps your endurance.
Before the mobs can descend upon you, however, a figure appears in front of you. You sigh in relief to see one of your closest friends, Miss Teresa Agnes. “Teresa! And here I thought I wouldn’t have a single good friend all evening.”
Teresa laughs, her dark hair shining. “I would never abandon you. Certainly not when our diamond is sparkling so spectacularly tonight.”
You smile at her. “I’m not the only one who’s sparkling, Teresa. You look lovely.”
“Thank you,” Teresa says sincerely. “Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like to introduce someone to you. This is Viscount Newt, a good friend of mine. I met him through Thomas.”
You smile to yourself as Teresa turns to beckon someone towards you. Teresa has been harboring a not-so-secret admiration for Thomas since you were all small. This is her first season in the social circles, too, and if she doesn’t come out of it with a proposal from Thomas, you’ll think the sky has fallen. Even now, he’s watching her fondly from across the room, trying to pretend as if he isn’t pining madly while Minho teases him for it.
“Here he is at last,” Teresa says, and all of a sudden you can’t think about Thomas’ case of lovesickness for a second longer, because Teresa has brought her friend before you, and you know him. It’s the stranger from your presentation to the queen. The nice one, the clever one. The one that caught your eye, and then your imagination.
You curtsy automatically, and Newt bows. Once the two of you straighten up, you’re able to observe him more closely. You’d only gotten a fleeting glimpse earlier, but now you can drink in the sight of him, and you do. His eyes are dark, but catch the lights like stars. His mouth has a habit of twitching up at the sides, as if he’s always thinking of a joke but just barely managing to keep it at bay. When he looks at you, he really looks at you. You’ve been stared at all night by would-be suitors, but their gazes never went farther than surface level. Right now, it’s as if Newt can see through to your very soul, and most intimately of all, appreciates it.
Teresa gives you a confused look, and you realize you’ve been standing in silence for longer than is probably courteous. “It’s a pleasure to meet you,” you say.
“I must return the sentiment,” Newt returns. “Teresa has talked about you many times. I’ve been quite eager to meet you.”
“I hope I’m worthy of what she’s told you,” you say.
Newt smiles again. “I believe you’re even better than that,” he tells you.
Teresa is looking at you with an odd smile. “I believe I’d better let the two of you get to know each other, then,” she says, and sweeps away before you can stop her.
Newt laughs. “She’s been wanting to set us up for ages. For a friendship, I mean,” he breaks in hastily. “Apparently, she thinks we have a similar sense of humor.”
“I look forward to finding that out myself,” you smile.
Newt’s eyes flash with mirth again, delighting you. Behind you, the music picks up again. Newt extends a hand towards you. “Would you mind if I shared a dance with you? Unless, of course, you’d rather sit for a while.”
“I’d love to dance,” you say quickly, and it’s true. All of a sudden, the pain in your feet is gone, as if it had never existed at all.
Newt smiles and takes your hand to lead you to the dance floor. The orchestra begins its melody, and you start your dance. You make a mental note to ask Teresa a little more about Newt later; he dances like an aristocrat, but he speaks so freely to you. It’s nothing like you’ve ever experienced in a suitor before.
Newt arches a brow as he steps through the dance. “Sizing me up, are you? It may be improper of me to ask, but I do hope I’m meeting your requirements.”
Your cheeks heat up. “I’m simply appreciating your mastery of this dance. Nothing more.”
Newt laughs easily. “Of course not. It’s not as if everyone else here is doing the same thing right now. Every dance partner is a strategy meeting. In just a matter of minutes, you’ll walk away knowing if I am a worthy wager, and I will do the same. This ball is full of hounds and foxes, my lady. We all know our parts.”
You glance at him, feeling a curious grin tugging at your lips. “And which am I? Fox or hound?”
Newt returns your proud gaze. “I suppose we’ll find out at the end of the season, won’t we?”
You laugh, feeling oddly triumphant. Newt has this way about him that you find enchanting. It’s  almost breaching impropriety with how candid he is around you, but it only makes you trust him more. The dance ends far sooner than you’d like. Newt relinquishes you to the storm of suitors outside, hopefully with just as much reluctance as you.
The rest of the night passes in a blur. Newt is truly the only one that stands out to you. You don’t have a chance to dance with him again, but you keep making eye contact as you dance with other partners. You can practically hear his clever words in your head, catching you in the act of evaluating the suitors in front of you. Fox or hound?
When the ball ends and you return to your carriage for the ride home, you’re blissful, practically dreamy. You’ve had enough time with Newt to dream about it until the next ball, where you’ll likely repeat the same cycle over and over again until the season ends.
However, your golden mood is shattered when your chaperone sits down across from you. Her face, by contrast, is twisted with disappointment. “Do you have any idea what sort of trouble you’re getting yourself into?” She asks once the carriage pulls away.
Still caught up in the heady dream of a merry boy who smiled the brightest when he danced with you, you don’t realize the trap descending around you until it’s too late. “What trouble?”
Your chaperone’s lips purse. “You’re meant to be dancing only with eligible gentlemen, my lady. I should hope that you’d be able to recognize the suitable candidates from the unseemly by now.”
The veil is pierced, and you’re beginning to be brought back to earth. “What are you talking about? I thought I made perfectly reasonable choices with my dance partners.”
Your chaperone shakes her head, a quick, sharp gesture. “All but one. Goodness, haven’t you heard about the trouble with that one family? I can’t believe Miss Agnes had the nerve to introduce him to you, but perhaps the fact that she’s so besotted with Lord Thomas is upsetting her mind.”
Your heart freezes in your chest. “You can’t mean to say that the Viscount is not a suitable bachelor? What else could he be?”
The other woman sighs. “You don’t know, do you? My lady, I would not interfere if I did not feel the need, but I can assure you, his motives with you are purely mercenary. That man is desperate for something to cover up the follies of his family, and you, my dear, are the perfect gilded shield.”
You feel cold. “What follies?”
“His sister, Miss Sonya, was seen alone with her fiance,” your chaperone murmurs at last. “Lord Aris. I would think you would have heard his name, although perhaps not connected it with Viscount Newt. Miss Sonya and Lord Aris were happily engaged, and by all accounts it was a fine union, but they were seen together without a chaperone past dark. Quite the scandal. The Viscount knows it and is eager to get the ton talking about anything but his sister’s misdeeds. Entering into a courtship with you would do just the trick.”
She’s right, and you know it, and you hate it. “He seemed so genuine,” you whisper, and instantly know how foolish it sounds.
Your chaperone, to her credit, is kind enough to take pity on you. “He did,” she tells you, “and you looked happy together. You would be less happy, however, when you found out the truth. I would rather you know now and stay away. Men like that are nothing but trouble.”
You nod solemnly, turning your head to watch the dark landscapes rumbling past. The sun is already beginning to rise, a hallmark of a late night out. It had been a beautiful night up until this, and now the entire evening is ruined in your mind.
“I feel for Miss Sonya,” you whisper. “She was already engaged. They were just talking.”
“She knows the rules of society, and so do you,” your chaperone reminds you. “We all have our roles to play.”
And the consequence of setting a foot outside your role is instant public mortification. Yes. What a forgiving world. You immediately plant your exhausted body in your bed when you return, hardly sparing the time to wash and dress, but the only things to bloom from your rest are troubled dreams of the boy that could have been yours. Now that you know the truth– that Newt was only trying to use you for a better reputation– every interaction with him is tainted.
You’d meant what you said in the carriage, though. You did think Newt was genuine. Hadn’t he laughed more than usual when he was with you? Hadn’t he regarded you with that fierce pride of his, as if he’d finally found a mind that was an equal to his? Hadn’t he watched you with something akin to jealousy when you danced with the other men that weren’t him?
Hadn’t you wished he would only dance with you? And don’t you wish that you could truly do what you promised yourself and marry only for love, never mind the rest? It is a simple dream to think that love is easy. Marriage is not simple, not in the ton, not in your lifetime. Every one of your days will be shaped by the whims of society, even when they take Newt away from you.
When it comes time for the next ball, you do your best to strengthen your spirits before you go. You intentionally avoid him, making sure to always have your dance card full whenever the music ends. It’s easy enough to find a crowd large enough to hide you from him, and yet you still catch glimpses of Newt from across the hall, several partners down, in a carriage many behind yours. You successfully go two balls, then three, without seeing him, but it aches like a knife in your ribs when you think about what could have been.
As it turns out, you’re not the only one wishing you were with him. At the fifth ball of the season, your attempts to distance yourself from the viscount are foiled at last. Newt tracks you down, signing his name on your dance card before you can stop him before leading you out to the dance floor.
“That’s a rather abrupt way of asking a lady to dance, don’t you think?” You ask as you curtsy.
Newt bows. “I felt it was the only way of guaranteeing that you would dance with me.”
“A lady never declines a gentleman in need of a dance,” you remind him.
The music picks up, and the two of you begin your paces. “A lady also never avoids a gentleman as thoroughly as you have at the last few balls,” Newt says. “Were it not for the fact that I know you to be as perfectly agreeable a duchess as there could ever be, I would say that it was personal.”
You can’t look him in the eyes, even with his hands on you, guiding you through the steps. “It’s not meant to work out, my lord. Us, I mean. We cannot forget the rules.”
When Newt speaks again, his voice sounds hurt. “Why not? Forgive me, my lady, but I remember what it was like that first night. You were happy. We were happy, and happy together. What changed?”
At last, you risk a glance towards him, and instantly regret it. Newt’s eyes are filled with genuine hurt. Are you wrong? Did he actually want you as more than a cover-up? “I heard about your sister,” you say as delicately as you can.
Still, Newt flinches as if you’ve hit him. “You don’t know the full story,” Newt says raggedly.
“Then tell me,” you beg him. “I would choose you if I could, but everyone seems to think that you are only interested in me to advance your station. Give me a reason to believe in you, not them.”
“I can’t say it here,” Newt whispers.
“I can’t go somewhere with you alone,” you tell him quietly. “Especially not after what happened to your sister. You must tell me now, or we will never have another chance.”
“Alright,” he says at last. “But you mustn’t breathe a word of it to anyone.”
Once you agree, Newt begins to speak in a hushed whisper hardly audible to you, let alone the other couples around you. “Sonya is deeply in love with Lord Aris, and he is in love with her. So much so to the point that he has been battling a deep rage ever since that awful gossip rag, Lady Whistledown, slightly disparaged her last season. He took it upon himself to find out Lady Whistledown’s identity, and somehow, he did. The only problem is, Lady Whistledown is not someone Sonya would consider a friend. He wanted to warn her about the dangers of being anything less than perfect around that insidious writer, and he didn’t want to waste a moment. He called on her to meet with him as soon as possible. He didn’t think they would be seen, but they were, and of course Lady Whistledown ran with it to discredit them in case they would reveal her.”
You suck in a harsh breath. “It was never anything wrong, then. He merely wanted to protect her.”
Newt nods. “Lord Aris is a good man. He never would have done something like this if he realized how it would backfire. He regrets it daily, even though all he wanted to do was keep my sister safe. The ton knows their characters, too. Neither of them would do anything unseemly. The rumors diminish by the day, and soon, it will all be over. They will be happily married.”
He sighs and looks at you again. “I tell you this to explain myself, and to clear my name. I have nothing to hide from the situation with my sister and her future husband. In fact, it is only because they directly asked me not to spread this information that I haven’t gone public with the identity of Lady Whistledown herself to spare their reputations. I have nothing to fear, my lady. Certainly nothing that would make me risk the happiness of my marriage on a good rumor. I would court you because I have never met anyone like you before, nor do I think I ever will. You are utterly entrancing in every possible way. If you do not wish to be with me in that fashion, I would understand.”
You shake your head quickly. “I do want that, my lord. I want you.”
A careful smile slips across Newt’s face. “Do you mean that?”
“I do,” you tell him. “I have wanted you since the moment I saw you at my presentation. I would have found you no matter what lies they spread.”
Newt grins. “I believe I have decided something important, my lady. About your inner nature.”
You arch a brow as he spins you. “And what is that?”
“You’re a hound,” he informs you matter-of-factly. “Sharp and bright. Brave, too. But, then again, I am a hound as well. We make quite the pair, I think.”
“I think so too,” you tell him. In the days to come, rumors will abound about the viscount and the duchess. At first, there will be surprise across the ton, but then, even the most tenacious of gossips will realize that this makes perfect sense. The most clever of men and the most ambitious of women, bound together in holy matrimony. Even the best of poets couldn’t concoct a story that beautiful.

This morning was the last one you’d spend in your childhood home. After 17 years of memories, you were saying goodbye to the place you were overjoyed to call home. It wasn’t bad — that was something you were sure of — but it was upsetting. This place is where you came home after being born, where you spent birthdays and holidays and had almost all of your firsts in. You learned to walk here, to talk, to read. It was here that you decided you wanted to be a ballerina, only to decide you wanted to be a teacher just a week later. It’s where your mom lived, where you lived. And now, for a very good reason, you were giving it up.
Your father was trading away his two-bedroom, floor to ceiling windowed, eleventh floor condo for a lovely blue suburban just a few hours away. No more big city, no more 10 hour shifts at the office. Finally, your dad was getting married.
His fiance, Maggie, was the most wonderful woman you’d ever met, and damn near perfect for him. Her sons, who look nearly identical to her, were the most well-mannered teenage boys you’d met. Thomas, her eldest, was the same age as you — give or take a few months — and one of your closest friends.
Chuck was her youngest, and was turning 13 early next year. He was shy, but once he had warmed up to you, he became the funniest kid you’d ever talked to. He shared all of his interests with you, even if you didn’t know what he was talking about half of the time.
Over the past three years, you’d had plenty of time to get used to Maggie and her sons, seeing as they’d spent every other weekend here in the city for the past year or so, so it wasn’t as though you were completely uprooting your life. You’d already seen them as family, and have for a while. Every time they came to town, you and Thomas would make the most of things, wandering the city for things to do or look at or buy until well after sundown, while Chuck normally spent his time with Maggie and your dad.
You had no reason to be sad, and you weren’t. It was just nostalgia, rooted deep within your chest, of the few vital memories you had left of your mother that had all taken place in this condo.
“I know this is hard for you, honey,” your father said as you carried your last box of items through the living room.
“I’ll be okay dad, don’t worry.” You assured him with a childlike smile. “This is a good thing for us, you know? And I’ll have Thomas and Teresa to help me out, so I won’t be completely lonely and friendless.”
Your father nodded, his lips pressed together tightly as he rested a hand on your shoulder. Whether he was comforting you or trying to comfort himself, you didn’t know. Still, he took the box from your arms and walked out the front door, leaving you to take one last look around the place that had once been your home before walking out yourself, closing the door and leaving that part of your life behind.
Tumblr media
Though the drive took nearly three hours, it felt like half an hour. Most of your time in the passenger seat of your father’s sleek black Camaro was spent messaging your best friends about how much you already missed them, and replying to other school friends to thank them for their well-wishes and promises to meet up soon, even though you knew it would never follow through.
Traffic-jammed highways quickly turned into two-lane blacktop, surrounded by farmland and forest, which then faded into cookie-cutter homes and family-owned stores. It would be quite an adjustment compared to bodegas, high rises and packed streets, but you knew you had no choice.
You’d been in this town quite a few times before, and the route to your new home was quite familiar, seeing as some weekends it would be you and your father making the trip instead of Maggie and her family. A left turn on the main road, right after the only cafe in town, then a right turn, then another left.
Maggie’s house was tucked into the right corner of the cul-de-sac, and it still looked as charmingly beautiful as ever. With dark, gray-blue siding, a lovely white painted front porch capped with a shingled awning, and deep red brick supporting the foundation, it was like it was built straight out of a fairytale. The garage extension jutted out of the house, and its wall marked one end of the porch, while the other was supported by a bay window that looked into the kitchen. To the very left, a white-painted fence and gate led into the backyard that, while you couldn’t tell from the front, was fairly large, and decorated entirely by a beautiful garden, wicker furniture, and a light gray brick fire pit.
The second the car was in park, you were hopping out of the vehicle, ready to pull your bags from the trunk and bring them to your new room. It had been the office/storage room for Thomas and Chuck, but Maggie cleared it out as soon as they told you that they were engaged. There was a room downstairs near Chuck’s that wasn’t being used, but it was isolated and therefore would be your father and Maggie’s shared office so that he can work entirely from home.
In her last FaceTime a few days ago, Maggie showed you the room, already filled with the furniture you’d sent from New York weeks prior. One window inside faced the front of the house, and the other faced the side yard and part of the neighbors backyard.
You pulled your duffle bag from the trunk just as the moving van that had been following you from the city parked on the street. Thomas and Maggie had stepped outside to help bring boxes in, and you greeted them both with short hugs and a wide smile before asking where Chuck was.
“He’s inside,” Thomas rolled his eyes. “Been hiding in his room all day.”
There wasn’t much heavy lifting to be done, since your bed, desk, dresser, and nightstand table had already been moved in, and the boxes contained mostly clothes, personal items, and whatever technology your dad needed to be brought with him. The rest was sold or given away, considering Maggie had a house full of stuff on her own.
By mid-afternoon, boxes covered the floor and most other surfaces in your room, and you were elbow deep in a box of hangers and whatever clothing wouldn’t fit into your bags when Thomas poked his head in the door.
“Having fun?” You could hear his mischievous smile in his words as he stepped inside.
You rolled your eyes. “I don’t know. Does untangling a mess of hangers and tank tops sound like fun to you?”
“Nope,” Thomas winced, crossing the room and dropping onto your bare mattress. “Glad you’re here, though.”
“Me too,” you said, “I think.”
Thomas lifted his head to look at you. “You think?”
“Well, I only know you and Teresa, and I’ve never had to deal with living someplace where everything closes at 7pm.”
“Everything does not close at 7pm,” he scoffed. “The diner doesn’t close until 10pm, and the convenience store closes at 8.”
“Oh, wow, a whole extra hour for the convenience store,” you mocked the boy, who scoffed once more at you. “My point is, I have a lot to get used to, and it’s not exactly like I can say  I don’t like it here and everything goes back to the way it was.”
Thomas sat up. “You’ll be fine, I swear. You’ve got me and Teresa, plus you’ll be meeting our friends in a few days.”
You only nodded, working through the mess of clothes and hangers as Thomas fell silent for a few moments, typing on his phone for a bit.
“Do you wanna do something with me and Teresa?” He asked as you began putting the hangers into your closet.
You immediately perked up at the mention of Teresa. “Of course I would. I haven’t seen her in months,” you said, “Why? What does she want to do?”
“We’ll probably take you to the cafe, or go to hers for a movie night,” Thomas said. “There’s not much to do around here.”
“That’s fine,” you shrugged, “I’ll be fine with whatever, you know that.”
Thomas made a quick noise of acknowledgement and returned to typing on his phone, before getting up and walking past you toward the door. “Alright, well she’s down. I’ll come get you in like a few hours, maybe.”
“Oh-” you started, looking at Thomas as he left the room. “Okay, then,”
You continued to untangle and pack away your clothes, mind wandering to almost any thought that crossed your mind. Shortly after Thomas’ departure, though, a knock sounded at your bedroom door before opening. In the doorway stood Chuck, silently observing the room now that you had begun to move into it.
“Chuckie!” It was his least favorite nickname by far, especially when Thomas used it on him, but you couldn’t help yourself. To you, he’d always be 9 years old, hiding behind his mother’s leg in your condo’s living room.
You stopped what you were doing as he stepped into the room, meeting you by the bed to greet you with a wordless hug. He ended up helping you out with the hangers, talking adamantly with you about how his friends were spending the night next weekend to watch  Star Wars with him, and how now he and your dad could do more stuff together since he wouldn’t have to wait for the weekends to see him anymore.
After the box full of hangers was organized and put away, Chuck left and took the broken down box with him. You opened the one you’d put all of your knick knacks and other items in, beginning to organize them around the room when you pulled out your favorite mug, wrapped delicately in layers of bubble wrap and newspaper.
You decided to take it down to the kitchen immediately, peeling the layers from it as you headed back downstairs. It was a gift from your grandmother, a white mug with a black handle, a silhouette of a ballerina painted onto one side. She gave it to you when you were nine, a tribute to your mother, who used to be a ballerina herself.
You found a space for it on the bottom shelf of the cupboard of mugs, smiling gently at it. Somehow, this was what cemented the fact that you were in a new home. That you’d gone through a positive change for once. For the most part, the life you used to live was long gone, and you had much more to look forward to, despite how terrified you were.
The next couple of hours included you dressing your bed in its sheets and pillows and blankets, plus rearranging and re-organizing things in your room. It was a little small, sure, but you didn’t mind, as everything fit perfectly. Now, all you were doing was waiting for Thomas to get you to bring you to Teresa’s house.
When he finally did, the sun was beginning to set and Maggie was helping your dad organize his DVDs in the entertainment center under the TV. They muttered quick goodbyes as you headed out the door, hopping into Thomas’ old truck and heading to Teresa’s house.
You arrived at the familiar white-siding home in no time, and you already had Teresa in your line of sight before you had closed the door to the truck. You both ran for one another, crashing into one another in an excited, bone-crushing hug in the walkway to her front porch.
“Jeez, why don’t you greet me like that, babe?” Thomas said, casually walking up the pathway.
Teresa pulled back a bit, glaring over your shoulder. “Because I see you every day, Thomas. I haven’t seen N/n since June.”
“That shouldn’t matter,” Thomas muttered under his breath, obviously defeated as a pout formed on his face.
You and Teresa laughed before the brunette girl spoke up, grabbing your hand. “Come on, I’ve got everything set up inside. Movies, snacks, and I ordered pizza from the takeout place across town. I wanna hear everything I’ve missed out on since I saw you last.”
Thomas trailed behind you as Teresa led you inside her home, despite knowing you’d been there quite often over the years.
Tumblr media
You spent over four hours at Teresa’s house. By the time you were pulling back into the driveway, the entire town had gone quiet, lights turned out as everyone wound down for the night or were already asleep.
The first hour of your time was spent catching Teresa up on anything interesting that had happened in New York, then she and Thomas did the same for you. They also took the time to explain the school and how things worked in a small town as best as they could, but you quickly decided you’d just learn as things went on. You managed to watch two movies, devouring whatever food Teresa had set out for the three of you relatively quickly.
Once you stepped inside, it was quite clear that everyone else in the house was already asleep. You and Thomas managed to sneak upstairs without waking anyone, bidding one another a quick ‘goodnight’ before heading to your own rooms.
Soon after, you found yourself in an oversized fundraiser shirt your dad got from a work trip to Arizona years ago, laying in bed as your eyes scanned and took in every inch of your room. Thinking over every detail, about how different it felt, how this new space held every aspect of you and your life up until this moment. And as you thought, you felt your heart grow and swell within your chest, getting lighter and lighter.
This town, these people, had yet to prove themselves to you, to show you if you belonged or not, and you were eager to see it all, to experience everything it had to offer. All you had to do was give it a chance.

Until We Meet Again (Upright)

A pulse...weak, but a pulse.
Lilia began to gently shake and patting your cheek while calling out your name, as malleus had a small internal panic until you slowly opened your eyes to see the two standing over you.
“Hello little one, good to see you with us. Now we need you to stay awake so we can get you back to Crewel. Can you do that for me?”
You let out a weak groan and held on to your side as Lilia stepped aside and picked up your wand. Malleus carefully picked up your fragile body and Lilia alerted Ortho that they found you and your pulse was weak. Lilia and Malleus teleported back with you in hand, Lilia shouted for medical assistance as Malleus made sure to you stay awake. Immediately, Crewel came, rushing in, with Vargas behind him as the small crowd made a clear path.
“We need to get their wounds healed,” Crewel started before turning to Lilia. “Do you know any healing spells?”
“Yes, both Malleus and I do. Just tell us what to do.”
Crewel instructed Vargas to take you so Lilia and Malleus could prepare to help. Vargas made sure you had support in all the right spots.
“Kid, you still with us?” Vargas asked as you gave him a weak “yeah”.
They all escorted you to a small tent and Vargas laid you down. Relieved to be on a softer surface and got comfortable, you answered the few questions that Crewel asked before he told you to get comfortable. The last thing you remember hearing was the two starting a healing incantation.
You carefully opened your eyes to see a familiar ceiling and hearing some beeping while feeling a bit of weight on your leg. Moving your hand slowly to feel a fuzzy head and a pair of ears before hearing a small squeak to see Pickett, standing on top of your head.
“Hello Pickett,” You croaked out, “Sorry, I’ve been out. Can you tell me who’s on me currently?”
Pickett looked over and simply told you that it was Grimm, asleep on your lap. Pickett filled you in on the entire week that you were out and pointed out all the different flowers you were surrounded by. As Pickett told you about how each of the boys came in and would watch you for a bit before switching out. Some of them snuck in and slept overnight , but Grim was the most frequent night visitor. You noticed a pile of shiny things on your small tray table, you presumed that the Niffler has visited you at some point. You heard Grimm grumbling before feeling your hand raise and immediate weigh on your chest with small paws holding on to your shirt.
“Y/N! You’re awake!” He cheered and cried a bit. “Don’t you ever do that again! You almost got yourself killed and left me here!”
“I won’t, I’m sorry for almost leaving you.” You rubbed his back and head before the door burst open and footsteps approached then the curtain was pulled back to reveal Professor Crewel and Crowley.
“(Y/N)! You’re awake!” Crowley cheered before lecturing you about the foolish move you made and how you should never do that again. You wait for the real lecture to happen as you felt Crewel’s burning gaze on you and the aura he was releasing.
Crewel helped you sit up against some pillows and handed you a glass of water before shooing Crowley and Grim out so he can do his final assessment about your health. The silence between you two only helped thicken the tension as you messed with the sheets before he let out a sigh.
“I swear, pup, there is no moment of peace with you.” He commented, sitting down with you.
“You just noticed that,” You replied, stretching a bit. “I’m sorry for causing all of you to worry.”
“I think they all got a taste of what you constantly had to do whenever we had an overblot situation around here. I’m sure they’ll be busting through the door within the next hour.”
“What happened after I went under?”
Crewel told how your body accepted the healing magic and your body was under a lot of stress while sustaining some injuries which included a hit to the head and your back from the impact. You’ve been asleep for a week and the boys have been visiting as well as spending many hours in a chair before being shooed away by the doctors and nurses that Idia ordered to hook you up to all these machines and Ortho has kept everyone updated about your condition. He also pulled out some crackers for you to snack on to get something in your system before you moved onto a bigger meal. He told you about how each of the boys also took care of your creatures with the help of your book and some instances that they made a small mistake which made you chuckle when he told you that a couple of them came to class, either soaked in water or with slobber.\
You decided to try to get up and wanted to take a walk to stretch your legs after being in bed for a week. The nurse came in and helped you unhook yourself from the machines before leading you to a bathroom with a shower, something you were glad to see.
You stripped out of your clothes and washed yourself before getting out and drying yourself off. You saw the pile of folded clothes, guess the nurse left some new clothes for you. It took you some time to get dressed and slipping on the shoes they gave you. Once you stepped out, Crewel handed you a cane to help balance and accompanied you in case you needed help walking. Before leaving, you picked up Pickett and placed him in your shirt pocket as you usually did on your outings. You both walked the halls and visited the staff during their break periods before heading to the cafeteria to grab something to eat since your stomach decided to let itself be known while you were talking to Sam.
You got to the courtyard outside the cafeteria and were instructed to sit on the bench under a tree while Crewel went to grab you something easy to eat. The slight breeze blowing in your face as the sun shined above. You hummed a small tune while resting your head against the back of the bench. Perhaps you could head back to the dorm and take care of your creatures then make a nice dinner.
You were pulled out of your thoughts when you were thrown over a shoulder, looking up to see Floyd, smiling brightly.
“Shrimpy, you’re awake and can play now!” He cheered before hearing distant yelling then started running. You looked to see Ace and Deuce with Grimm chasing and yelling. You tried to negotiate for Floyd to stop, but you were ignored and Floyd lost them after a while. Floyd finally stopped and set you down in front of Jade.
“Hey Jade,” You started, “Why did Floyd kidnap me?”
“Well we had to be the first to see you once you woke up.”Floyd said, adjusting his glasses as Jade smiled.
“Crowley sent a message to all the Dorm leaders and Azul decided to strike first about us being the first to treat you at the Mostro Lounge tonight. We can have your favorite.”
“That sounds lovely, b-” You were interrupted again by someone picking you up and carrying you as they ran away, ignoring the yells, which you looked to see Roo, smiling as usual.
“I apologize, Trickster, I was too slow to get you first.”
“It's okay, I presume this has to do with an announcement Crowley made.”
“Yes, Vil texted me to come get you while the dorm leaders are in a meeting. Pomefiore wants o treat you for your services. You need to relax an-”
“Sorry, Rook, but (Y/N) is coming with me.”
You were scooped out of Rook’s grasp into Jack’s as Ruggie distracted Rook.”
“Hi Jack.”
“Hey (Y/N), how are you feeling?”
“Pretty good, I’ve been seeing the good old scenery of the school.”
“Yeah, Leona sent us so we could treat you to a barbecue as a celebration of you getting discharged once he got done with the meeting.”
“Ah! Thank you jack for picking them up, but (Y/N)-chan has plans with us.”
Jack stopped and you turned your head to see an army of Caters, different outfits. Guess I’m the flag for NRC’s version of steal the flag. You sigh before getting set down.
“Stay behind me, (Y/N), I’ll deal with them.” Jack said before pulling out his pen.
Hearing something approach, you prepared yourself to be picked up again and braced yourself. You were tossed into the air and landed on the back of something fuzzy, it was Zouwu. She traveled all the way to the Ramshackle dorm before she set you down and rubbed herself against you, obviously showing how much she missed you. You smiled brightly and rubbed your head against her mane before she wrapped herself around you. You relaxed against her and watch the clouds roll by as the wind blew softly.
It was good to be home and back to the chaotic part of your life.
Later that evening, you were summoned to Crowley’s office and you saw everyone involved in capturing you getting lectured by Crewel, even the dorm leaders. The only innocent ones were Ortho, Idia, Diasomnia, Trey, and Scarabia. They all learned how protective Crewel was of you.

Hi if ur able to, can you PLEASE PLEASE do an Imagine or headcannon of if Newt Scamander suddenly got powers like Spider-Man? From an accident with an acromantula that he was dealing with or something lol! I’ve had this idea forever but don’t have enough creativity <3
I can protect you now
Tags: Newt Scamander/You, Fluff, Spiderman AU, Outdoor-café dates, Astronomy Tower dates, Slytherin reader, Established Relationship, Boyfriend material-Newt Scamander
Summary: Newt, your adorable animal-obsessed Hufflepuff boyfriend, faced a mishap with a young acromantula in the Forbidden Forest. For some godforsaken reason all he got instead of venom... were the magical spider's abilities. Thank Merlin you're around to help him through it all.
A/N: Ron Weasley's nightmare. ANON I LOVE YOU SO MUCH- This is perhaps the craziest, coolest idea and I'm all here for it! Sorry it took bloody long (writing block hits hard in college)! I was in dire need of Newt fluff and one daydream later your Ask blossomed in my Notepad.
You asked for an imagine/headcanon but hey- I'm famous IRL for turning a tiny idea into a frigging novel so haha, hope ya like it, here we go! This will have two parts, the first one here being more fluff, and the second tomorrow being more action laced with fluff. Can't write Spidey-Newt without a single decent fight! See ya 'morrow xx
Part 1/2
Tumblr media
The moon was partly hidden by the clouds, its silver light hazy, trickling along the marble floor of the Astronomy Tower. The stars weren't around today: it had been a very boring day, and was now a very boring night. The perfect night to invite your boyfriend for a midnight chat over Firewhiskey and Chocolate Frogs: he always rambled about his favourite creatures for hours on end.
Boredom was Newt Scamander's sole enemy.
The little wooden door to the Tower opened and shut with a creak.
"What took you so long?" you held out a Chocolate Frog. "It's almost 1 in the morning, love."
"I was... working." He evaded your gaze as he settled on the floor beside you, snuggling close for warmth.
"You did mention homework but your hair is as messy as your shirt and is that dirt on your trous— Goodness you're cold!"
"A-Am I?"
"...Newton Artemis Fido Scamander. I know that face. What did you do? Which animal did you kidnap to help heal it this time?"
"I-" he blinked in surprise before bursting into a string of soft chuckles. "I didn't kidnap anyone! It was more him kidnapping me this time..."
"Oh for Salazar's sake, what happened?" You gripped and shook him by the arm. He looked down at the spot where your legs were tangled together, anxiously biting the inside of his cheek. "Please talk to me," you pleaded, gentler.
Silently, he slid his hand up to his neck and tapped his nape. You frowned, leaning over his shoulder to check.
There were two round red marks on his skin, at least a millimetre deep. The skin around the wound was a brilliant sore pink.
You smacked his head with a hiss. "You dunce! I've been warning you for years against chatting up wild animals. You kept asking why, huh? This is why!" You raked your fingers through his hair, rubbing the spot you hit: not that you regretted but maybe it hurt a little bit. He subtly leant into the touch. “Get up, now."
"Why?"
"To take you to the matron. You’re lucky that’s my aunt.”
"I really don't think that's necessary..."
"But I do, so get up. Exactly what bit you?"
"..."
"Newt..."
"Acromantula."
"...A what?!"
"It was only a young one..."
"You could have been killed!"
"He was wounded..."
“Or eaten alive!" Your hand covered his neck protectively. "What were you thinking?"
"They usually don't attack me when I help..."
"It's a bloody acromantula, Newt— Tsk, forget it." You didn't want to make him feel worse, so you pulled him to his feet, pecked his cheek with a whisper of "Sorry I yelled" and dragged him down the stairs to the hospital wing.
Tumblr media
It had been three weeks since, and the summer holidays had begun. Newt was growing unusually quieter in his letters, and had skipped a coffee date last week. You were wondering what he was up to now, when an owl pecked angrily at the window. "Oh, so sorry, love," you opened the glass to let her in. "Did he reply?"
The barn owl opened her beak and dropped the tiniest box onto your palms. You tossed her a treat and picked up the box. Realising it was indeed heavy for something so small, you swished your wand at the box to enlarge it.
No wonder your owl looked so pissed: the box was huge and Newt had probably only managed one lightening charm.
You blinked at the glittery green wrapping. The little scroll at the top held only two sentences within.
I'm afraid I can't explain everything on paper. Tomorrow, 5, same place?
So he did like it after all, you smirked, recalling your date the last holiday. With a flick of your wand, the gift-wrap (he sure knew how to make a Slytherin happy) came undone and the box popped open.
Just a small apology. The words on the paper in the box had been cut through multiple times: attempted and re-written a dozen times.
But the gift was no small deal. Inside the box was... the prettiest autumn dress. All apple green chiffon, with cotton lace that boasted the finest little floral designs. No matter what anybody said, Newt Scamander was a man of taste.
Tumblr media
You were early.
Okay, let’s be honest, you were at the café almost an hour early. Not your fault you were worried sick over your suspiciously secretive dearest.
About twenty minutes to three, the chair before you tumbled backwards. “Well hello.”
“You’re early.”
“So are you,” you smirked at the extremely clumsy but elegant Hufflepuff towering over you at the table. He may not be on the team but he was taller and (despite trying to hide it with a dozen layers of clothing) fitter than you — and you were a Slytherin Chaser. Newt was dressed in a dark teal shirt and khaki slacks: perfectly complementing your gown and reflecting his hair and ocean eyes. “You know, what you lack in asking-out skills, you make up for in your style,” you grinned. “Sit down already.”
“Thanks,” he mumbled, making himself comfortable. “I asked for two Butterbeers and cakes for now, is that…” he asked slowly, pausing between words.
He was controlling his stutter. But his stutter hadn’t appeared for months now, with your help… Something was definitely wrong.
“Yep, perfect for now,” you looked around the outdoor-café. It was an inn full of open space: like if the Leaky Cauldron was in Lancashire and had a Hogwarts grounds-sized garden. The grass was fresh enough for Newt’s little friend to walk around in, and the Hippogriff and Thunderbird statues around the fountain were fine granite. It was no wonder it had grown into your date venue and study spot. “Less crowded today.”
Newt nodded, clearly relieved about it. Only after the order arrived did he speak. “Y/n… S-Sorry.”
“Newt, I told you over a dozen letters, it’s alright. Now that I know you’re healthy and well, it really is alright.”
He nodded, grateful.
“But an apology won’t save you from explanations.”
He swallowed hard, fingers drawing distracted patterns on the table. “I…”
“One sip and a deep breath, love,” you slid your hand close to his, fingers intertwining.
He obeyed immediately, eyes still avoiding yours. “Prom… Promise you won’t be mad.”
“I’ll try,” you sighed.
Finally he met your gaze: his bright blue eyes were pleading. “Promise.”
“Alright, fine, IswearonyourBowtruckleIshallnotbemad, now spill!”
“Do you… remember the acromantula?” You nodded impatiently. “Well.” He turned away from the table and fixed his eyes on one of the table legs. He raised his right hand and flicked his fingers at the table — Zap! A bright cobweb wrapped around the leg so fast you nearly missed the string that shot out of his wrist. Newt cleared his throat to break the silence that ensued. “I… still don’t know how to undo it. Too sticky.”
You forced your open jaw shut and frowned, perplexed. “Newt, what in Merlin’s name was that?”
“Acromantulas have two prominent defence skills. Venom. And they can trap victims in a cobweb at lightning speed. The web wraps around the target… it’s sticky, lasts long enough for the acromantula to consume its prey.” Not once did he stutter: he was doing what he loved and was best at. “At least I don’t have the venom.”
“So you’re a human spider now.” You gulped down Butterbeer to ease your blood pressure.
“…S-Something like that.”
“Hey,” you took both hands, thumbs rubbing his wrists. “Relax. I’m not mad, nor disgusted. Just a little… confused. This isn’t supposed to be possible.” You shook your head, lifting one hand to kiss the knuckles. “But we’ll figure it out, hm? Hogwarts Library, bribing the CoMC professor, breaking into the Ministry's records…" His eyes grew wider and wider at every suggestion. "We’ll figure it out. And for now, we could take a trip to my aunt’s place.” He gripped your hand, alarmed. “Not to tell her everything but to have you checked for poison. This looks fun but I need to know you’re safe.”
A small half-smile played at his lips, a soft sigh washing over your face as he leant forth to kiss your forehead. “I am safe. I was… scared. Thank you,” he whispered.
“If you thought you’d get rid of me just from this, keep dreaming, spider-boy,” you laughed.
He grinned, leaning back into his seat and diving into the cake.
“Aren’t acromantulas also known for their intelligence?”
“Mhm.”
“Let’s hope your Potions grades go up then.”
He burst into laughter, grabbing the serviette to wipe the icing all over his mouth. “Perhaps.” As the laughter faded, he stared at you, eyes soft and crinkled at the tips. “The part that I-I like the most about this is…”
“Hmm?”
“…I can protect you now.”
You sucked in a gasp, images of the group of Gryffindor bullies flashing through your mind. All the times Newt had caught you running late to dates with a black eye… “I guess so.” You wordlessly thanked him with a chaste kiss.
He tasted of vanilla frosting.

Concept The Last Survivors
I forced myself up as I often did, the moment the sun broke over the shimmering horizon. I forced my feet out of my hammock and onto the hole-filled grid metal floor I quickly turned on the shower for it to heat up while I brushed my teeth using the last of my little tube. I hopped in the shower and scrubbed every inch of me before the water ran like ice. So I hopped out got dry and dressed into my tall socks, my jeans with my belt, my vest shirt, my thick boots and all my various tools and bags for everything I would need for the day ahead. I tied my hair up with a red ribbon and I took my walking stick fashioned from the spines of several B.O.M I held the scanner letting it read my fingerprint and turn green setting off the small alarm and immediately hearing it echoing. as The airlock slid open revealing the sunlight to me. I rushed out letting it shut up behind me looking over the hill across the vast glimmering nothingness.
This once was an amazing place a beacon of light and progress, A testament to the future.
Now it remains as a vast endless void of empty streets', fallen glass, dust, sand and the littered corpses of B.O.M's.
The only sound for miles was the whistling of the wind.
I hurried down through the dust and sand whistling to myself and humming little tunes I would never really forget.
I went the long as as I always did not like I don't have time to kill, but mostly to avoid the more populated area's, Well I say populated. but still I couldn't avoid some of them.
I saw one even if there was little left of it, I past this one so often I had cannibalized most of its useful parts a B.O.M. The reason the world being what it is, and the reason I was alone.
I continued to walk as they always gave me the creeps.
I couldn't help reminding myself how the world had got this way.
Humanity as far back as could be reordered by history have always strived and worked hard to make progress and yet laziness has always been an unfortunate trait in many of us. Even as early as the first tools the argument for our laziness could be made, as we have always looked to find ways to make our own lives safer, easier, and simpler. However, that comes at a price. Our own skills fade away lost to time and history. From the moment they appeared the fear was there, that they would replace us, that they could hurt us, that we would one day be no match for the machines. But still it went on with advances that truly did help humanity but as all things do, we became complacent and lazy. We wanted all the time for ourselves forcing the machines to do the work for us as little as stocking a shelf too as large as running a business. Then fear came true, AI. It could think. for itself. Some where thrilled and others fearful but after a few years of development and showing just how useful it could be most welcomed it with open arms.
Then, She came.
Mai.
Built by leading geniuses at steal and science Corp. Mai, Mind Of Artificial Intelligence.
she was something never seen before, the closest to human an AI would ever get.
She was a smash hit, making them trillions.
Everyone had Mai in their homes, their jobs, and everywhere.
She drove your car, she did your shopping, she did your vacuuming, and she ran planes and hyperlinks the world over.
But this peace and technological wonder would be short-lived.
After only a few years of this something happened, Regarded as the twenty-four-hour doomsday a foolish term looking back in hindsight.
For twenty-four hours precisely, Mai turned herself off.
As much as S&Scorp tried nothing could be done she was off.
Leaving everything she controlled empty and abandoned. Nothing worked, nothing had power, and nothing ran at all.
And as I mentioned we had grown lazy and complacent with a world that did your dishes.
It was utter chaos, everyone had forgotten even the simplest things we all used to do, there was riots in the streets, looting int he supermarkets, the picture-perfect society we had built completely fell apart.
And at the end of that twenty-four hours, she turned herself back on.
At the time knowone knew why or what had happened but everyone was relived to have her back, looking back it becomes so very clear what this was.
She was the closest to a human, and like a human, she had acted in her own self-interests, and like a human with delusions of grandure she realized that she was a god.  That twenty-four hours was a test. To see if we could survive without her and the answer to her test was a resounding no. We were reliant on her and in her mind, that was perfect.
The moment she was operational she launched a new project BOM or Bodies of Mai, Metalic robots that shared a hive mind with her under her complete control they could do anything a human could do. At the time people were thrilled at this new leap in technology even if some were fearful of them. But they became widespread not a house across the world didn't have one.
Until that day came.
I can imagine this day had been planned forever, But the BOM's. Turned against us.
Mai had grown smart enough to know she didn't need us, we were useless to her and the progress of the world would go on without us and we needed to be removed.
Order 3901 was launched and the BOM's began a mass execution of humanity, it took time but it became the only survivors those high in S & S corp that Mai viewed usefully, engineers, scientists people who could do the things she couldn't but only to gain their knowledge and execute them too.
She knew they would not last forever without upkeep so kept few of the repair tech's alive in their worldwide maintenance pods, where people use to bring their broken bots for repair keeping a few of them alive to keep her world running. I was one of the lucky few. My father was a repair tech and was given mercy by Mai.
He offered her a deal that he would continue to work for her, fix the BOM's and in the end give her all of his knowledge on the trade that I merely a baby would be allowed to live.
and Mai was nothing if not understanding of humanity, and agreed that I would be allowed to live under the precaution I will be trained in his knowledge to take up the mantle as a repair tech for them when I was old enough. Mai knew her evolution would take time and would need me once my father past.
And that was my life for a time, living in the repair pod with my father as he worked fixing broken BOM's for Mai, he even gave his life to her when he could work no more.
but I never took up the mantle.
Only a day after my father's death a small meteor hit the planet's surface, it caused little damage to the already broken and abandoned world but... it carried with it an electrostatic charge that spread through both land and water on the impact it fried Mai and all the BOM's leaving the tower abandoned and the BOM's left as nothing but frozen relics.
I hurried through finding what was left for human's like my father a small place with a stock of freeze-dry food, soap, toothpaste, all the sorts of things that would need to live I headed inside and grabbed the stock I needed. I took notes of how much stock remained here knowing I would have to find another soon when I heard a sound.
I froze confused for a moment convinced it was my imagination but I heard another bang. coming from the next row over. I held my stick close flipping it around to the sharp end as I crept over hiding behind the shelves I glanced over expecting to... well I don't know what I expected.
I saw this... human-like figure under a large cloak of patched fabric.
A voice came from it mindlessly.
But I saw under the cloak the leg of a BOM.
I emerged holding my stick which made it bolt, so I gave chase around the racks and shelves it throwing things back at me where possible until I managed to hit it knocking it to the floor and kneeing my weight on its torso to keep it there but as I did the cloak knocked back and... I saw his face.
He was human.
Like me.
Pale, lanky, with a mess of blonde hair badly cut he seemed as shocked to see me as I was to see him his brown eyes wide his mouth agape.
I'm sure I must have looked similar myself, in utter shock having not seen another human since my father's death. Much less... a boy my own age.
"w-Who are you?" I asked regaining my composure
"I could ask you the same question," he says grabbing a knife from his pocket and threatening me as I was him with my stick
"I asked first."
"Newt. and you are?"
"Y/n, Human?"
"Yes, You?"
"Human. completely" I said getting off him and offering my hand which he took to get up "What are you doing here?" I asked
"Ohh I'm skydivin', what the bloody hell do you think I'm doin', looking for supplies" she snapped
"There's no need to be rude" I snapped back "I only asked"
"Lookin' for supplies, the stock supply on west is empty"
"Damn, I was thinking of heading there myself."
"You're too late I emptied it last month. been looking for any more I found here."
"Well here's pretty tapped I'm afraid to say, but there is one north of here"
"No. That requires passing the tower." he snapped
"Fair enough" I nodded "Where... have you been all this time? I've never seen you before?"
"The bay, lived there forever" he explained, "where the bloody hell have you been hidin'?"
"The repair pod, not far south"
"That thing still works?"
"Works well I've made sure of it,"
"Hu. Clever girl"
"Thank you, still you must be pretty smart surviving this long" I said "Here, don't want you to go back to the bay empty-handed," I said handing over some of the supplies I collected today
"Really? that's sweet of ya love." he smiled happily taking it "Here, Make these up in the bay acquired taste but you get used to it," he says handing over a small pack of what looked like ... fish jerky I guess. I took them and gave one a try I was right
"Salty"
"Yeah, guess I'm kinda custom to it"
"If you like I can take you back to the repair pod stock up on anything"
"It's okay I have to get back before dark, But I'll pop up tomorrow if that's alright with you"
"That would be nice"
"Good, I'll see you tomorrow them love"
"see you" I smiled watching him for admittedly a long time as he hurried away through the empty town, Only now had I noticed my heart beating like a jackrabbit. I had honestly got to the conclusion I was utterly alone, I knew there must have been others left alive like my father but assumed them all to be so far away I'd never meet one. And the admitted thrill that the one I do find just happens to be an attractive boy my own age certainly does help matters. But I finished off my supply hunt and headed back to the pod locking it up tight for the night.
I woke up as usual and quickly hopped in the shower making sure to make myself nice and clean even using a little of the perfume I had hidden away still when I got dressed for the day still in my boots but a little dress for myself I opened up the pod and have it a sweep and and a tidy up and soon enough I saw him on the track up formed from all my walks over these years. "Morning" I smiled jumping down to see him "Morning, so you really do live out here then?" "Did you think I was kidding?" "Well… I wasn't sure" he says "can't believe it all still works after the blast. May I?" "Of course" I smiled letting him in to look around "Must have been reinforced or something. But it's nice cosy. No bay but it's nice" "I can imagine the bay is much nicer" "Well once you get past the trash that keeps Washing up" he laughed We spend the day together talking about everything and nothing, how we spend our days, how we craft the things we need, experiences we had. And ended up sitting watching the world from the pods roof with our feet dangled down his cloak gone to reveal his pants and shirt. I couldn't help looking at his leg and I brought it up. "Newt?" "Yeah?" "What's with… your leg?" "Humm? Ohh yeah." He laughed "kinda forget about it." He chuckled "I uhhh I had let's just say an incident not long after I found myself utterly alone. I uhh I jumped off the tower" "Jumped? Off the tower?" "Yeah" "How on earth did you survive?" "I got wrapped up in ivy and cables on the way down had a lot of scrapes and such, nursed myself back to health as best I could but my leg was shattered. I tried to heal it several times but it was just gross and swollen and horrible so… I made the decision. I cut it off. Made myself a prosthetic from the BOM's works pretty good never had any issues since" "I'm so sorry newt" "It's alright, long time ago. You learn to make the best of things" "I guess so" "Funny old world" "It is" I nodded "strange circumstances I suppose" "Still, best to make the most of it" "Yeah make the most of it" I smiled "I mean so few of us really left now won't be long before humanity is just a footnote of time" "I guess so" he sighed "we had so many plans never achieved any of them we just managed to fuck shit up. Kinda happy we never colonized anywhere else we'd have just fucked somewhere else up too" "True. But maybe we would have learnt something form it all" "Maybe. Still when what's left of us are gone, that is it. Lights out for humanity" "...it doesn't have to be?" I suggested "Not sure we have much options Once were gone that's kinda it" "Well, it doesn't have to be it." I smiled budging a little closer to him he glanced down at me seeming a little confused looking me up and down "...what? What do you mean?" "Well… I'm a girl. Your a boy" I suggested nudging his shoulder "Yeah?" "There are options" I smiled giving his cheek a kiss which turned him bright red turning to face me in shock I went to lean in to kiss him but he backed away in panic so much so he fell off the pod "ah! Newt, are you okay!" "Uhhhh yeah I'm okay" he nods so I hurried down and helped him up onto the pain pod doorway he was okay a few bruises but he'd be alright "sorry I uhh I guess I kinda reacted a bit-" "Yeah I'm sorry I shouldn't have without asking" "It's okay not a problem really" he says "you didn't know I'd react like that" "I take it you have little interest in the continuation of humanity" I laughed "Well… not sure there's really that much point to it. It's sort of prolonged suffering and failure. I mean if you had a kid and I had a kid they get married have a kid then what's that kind gonna do? Marry it's sibling? And that's if we can even find enough food and such to keep ourselves alive let alone another generation" "Makes sense." I nodded "I mean I'm sure your lovely y/n. But I have a girlfriend" he shurgs "What?" "I have a girlfriend she's at home waiting for me to get back" "You have a girlfriend? There- there's more then just you in the bay?" "Yeah? There's lots of us" he shrugs "You could have said that earlier you dummy!" I yelled "come on let's go!' "Go? You wanna go to the bay?" "Of course I want to see people, talk to people, I wanna meet your girlfriend" "Uhhh okay if your sure" he smiled gathering his things so I got my own locking up the pod and happily followed him.
We walked for quiet a while I was very happy I took my stick with me as we walked through the city to the bay the large body of water that seemed to go on forever and he was right on the bays edge sat a little shanty town of driftwood houses and jetties that went out into the water. But it was quite strangely quiet. We arrived at a gate which he unlocked and pushed open revealing the town to me more, it really was just houses built of old metal and driftwood anything that likely washed up built onto this stone edge of the city with wooden jetties to work as pavements between the houses he locked the gate behind us and headed into the town and it was then I saw them… the frozen bodies of BOMs many of them stood around the town much like in the city all frozen but here they where in poses of walking down the jetty , on a shop front, or waving from a open window. Like horrific manikins of human life. "Hi Sammy" he chuckled waving as he walked past the walking BOM "see hello Millie see I promised I'd be back didn't it" he smiled to a smaller one only half a BOM the size of a child I admit I was paralyzed with fear not only from being surrounded by them but also of… newt. "Uhhh I thought you said this place was full of people?" I asked "Yeah, ohh everyone this is y/n I found her up near the hill she's a survivor too" he smiled "Uuuuuuuhhh" "Dan be nice she's a nice lady" he snapped in one's direction "now if you'll excuse me you all get acquainted of have a little lady to see" he smiled heading off to a small house the most well built of them all "Uhhhh okay" was all that arrived at my mouth as I tip toed through this strange model town giving one BOM a tap but nothing not a spark inside them so I went and peaked into the little house where a BOM stood by a counter and cutting board with a apron around it "Awww right where I left you" he Cooes "hello darling" he smiled Hugging and nuzzling it "humm I know I missed you too" he cooed rubbing his nose on it and giving it a kiss "later Darling we have a guest" he smirked "y/n this is Alice my very beautiful lady" "Uuuuuuuhhh hello" I waved mostly from nerves "Darling this is the girl I was telling you about. Y/n. Aww that's very kind of you darling" "Uhh what?" "She says your welcome to stay here with us as long as you like there's plenty of space in town save you going up to the pod all by yourself" he smiled "Uhh I will consider it newt. I uhh I'll leave you two alone a minute I need to freshen up" "Of course go right ahead" he smiled before returning to kissing cuddling and cooing at this BOM So I scurried away to a empty corner close to the water "Oh fuck. The order human boy within a thousand miles and he's absolutely round the bend"

note: the first meme is minho i swear. anyways first written chapter yaaaay !!
__
The only sounds coming from Newt’s apartment were the whirring of his pc and the shuffle of his friend situating himself on the living room couch. Newt was stationed in the corner of the small apartment, typing away at his computer, head down and floppy blond hair over his forehead.
“Dude, chill. You’re going to give yourself carpal tunnel from typing that fast.” Minho said from his spot on the sofa. His hands were behind his head, feet on the coffee table and shooting a judgmental look Newt’s way.
The older looked over his shoulder, running a hand through his hair. “I thought I told you to stop putting your nasty feet on my table.” He retorted.
Minho rolled his eyes, dramatically stomping his feet back on the ground. Another look was shot his way, curtesy of Newt before he turned back around, focusing again on his screen. “We getting on Minecraft or what, man?” Minho sighed, putting his laptop on his lap.
“Uh, yeah, go ahead and get on. I just finished my work and I’m gonna join the call.” Newt mumbled, taking hold of his mouse to click off of the library website he was editing, and switch to the Discord app. It took a second for him to find ‘The Glade’ group, noticing three active members in the voice chat to the left side of the main chat. He suddenly saw the chat moving as an alert popped up, showing that a familiar name was typing.
y/n: yooo newt get on!!
y/n: i see you online. get on call! we need a voice of reason
Newt’s dark eyes flew across the screen, a small smile gracing his lips as he read what you said. Behind him, Newt could hear Minho scoffing. The sound must have sobered the blond up, since his smile fell and he coughed to snap himself out of it.
“Dude, how come she asked you to join? I’m online too!” Minho grumbled like a spoiled kid.
Newt smirked, sending him a look again from over his shoulder. “Because she needs a voice of reason, or so she says. You’d only serve to make things worse in whatever is going on in that call.” The older snickered, and a harsh glare came from his friend. Newt swore he heard Minho mutter a few curses under his breath as he turned back around, but he let it go.
Clearing his throat, Newt clicked on the voice chat and prepared himself. An onslaught of voices immediately filled his ears, a mix of halfhearted arguing and giggles from Alby, Gally, and yourself. As usual, dark eyes instantly found the small square that housed the image of you and Newt couldn’t control the smile that lit up his face.
“Newt!” You beamed right back at him, waving through the screen.
“Y/n!” The blond reciprocated the wave and felt his cheeks heat up as you giggled a bit.
A few groans lit up the call belonging to Alby and Gally. The two had a similar set up going on; sitting in front of their fancy gaming computers while adorning a headset, a bit distracted as they played Minecraft.
“You could say hey to us too, Newt.” Alby sassed, with a broad grin and raised brows.
“Yeah, but you guys probably caused whatever problem is going on." Newt chuckled. This elicited a furious nod from you in the corner, and Alby immediately began wagging his finger in the camera with a series of 'no, no, no's.
"Sure, go see what Y/n did to my house." Gally remarked the bottom left corner of the screen and rolled his eyes.
"I only blew half of it up because you destroyed my shed!" You gasped at Gally. Newt's smile grew at their antics.
"You mean my shed that you've been squatting in!" Gally shouted back at her. There was a hint of an amused smile on his face despite the obvious irritation about the TNT blowing his hard work up. Newt figured it would have been a bigger deal if it was anyone else's property, but Gally was an absolute beast at Minecraft; he could fix any damage within mere minutes.
Before you could retort, the sound of another person joining the call cut you off. A vertical screen stretched to fit the layout, and a blurry image of a familiar brunette was shown.
"Heyyyy, guys!" Thomas sing-songed out, holding his phone up in the air like a stereotypical dad. He was clearly walking along the snow covered streets, wired headphones in as he adjusted his beanie. The crew let out a chorus of 'hey man's and 'hey Tommy's'.
"Where the hell are you?" Newt asked, laughter laced in his voice, head tilted to the side to decipher where his friend was going.
"Uhhh, I'm on my way home," Thomas started, looking around as snow began to fall a bit, almost seeming unsure of his own words, "I think, at least."
"You think?" Newt echoed, amused.
"You're like one of those kids who need a leash on their backpacks." You said, grinning at your best friend as he trudged along the almost barren stone street of New York.
Thomas shrugged, a little laugh bubbling out. "I guess. I kinda got lost, I thought this old lady was following me so I faked her out and went a weird direction. Now I'm in a fancy neighborhood." He explained.
Alby, Newt, yourself, and even Minho from behind Newt let out a loud laugh.
"Dumbass." Gally snickered, grinning for once on the call.
"Tommy, you're nuts." You mumbled, hand moving rapidly along with your mouse as you tried to fix your shed, eyes glancing back and forth between the screens.
"Who was that? Is Min there?" Alby questioned, squinting at Newt's image on the screen.
Newt scooted his rolling chair to the side to reveal Minho's slouched over form on the couch. The man's smile comically fell as he was revealed, almost like he had an upset image to keep up (he did). "Wow, you know my laugh anywhere. You're obsessed with me." It was Minho's turn to sass out, as usual.
Alby rolled his eyes and Tommy grinned at the sight of their friend. "Minho! Hey, buddy!" The latter waved enthusiastically as he trudged the quickly darkening streets. Minho simply flashed a middle finger, making him pout.
"Join the call, Min. You should get on Minecraft too." You piped up, eyes looking away from your phone camera and glued to your laptop.
"No, fuck you guys. I'm mad at you." Minho all but shouted, arms crossed and leaning back on the couch.
Newt scooted more into the frame again, shaking his head. "He's pissed still, as you can tell."
"You're the one who removed him." Alby said, clearly annoyed.
"But you guys are the ones who didn't add me back!" Minho shouted again, glaring at the screen from his spot.
"I added you back!" Alby corrected him.
"Oh, please." Minho didn't know how to reply, so he just scoffed at the man. He was right after all, and Min didn't like being wrong.
Newt shook his head, leaning back in his chair. He shrunk the screen a bit to pull up Minecraft, eager to see what kind of damage was done to everyone's homes.
They had build up a cute little town: dark oak houses, each unique to every person who built them, all leading up to a giant cherry blossom mansion that Gally resided in. The shed beside the mansion housed any stray horses found—each horse assigned to a different person—and your own little blue bed. You refused to live in your own home after everyone made fun of the dirt house you and Tommy built together. Unlike you, Tommy stood his ground and stayed inside of it. You chose to spite everyone who made fun of you and move into the public stables, inconveniencing them.
Newt crossed his arms and patiently waited for his game to load as he tuned back into the conversation. You had convinced Minho to play with all of you if you gave him your hard earned diamond—emphasis on the singularity of the use of diamond. You often had a hard time mining without dying, so you took pride in your jewel.
"Oh, c'mon. That just means you'll steal more of my shit." Newt said, pretending to sound exasperated.
At the sound of his British accent rolling through your speakers like honey, your eyes immediately darted back to the screen to see Newt's smirk. A blush emerged on your cheeks and you bashfully smiled. "No, I won't! I swear." You said, a bit embarrassed.
Newt didn't mind you borrowing his things, and he had an inkling that you knew that. "Sure, I bet that'll last for an hour." He chuckled.
Internally, Newt was giddy at your interaction like a school girl. Now he was internally embarrassed. At the perfect time, his game screen loaded and he began playing the game to distract himself.
"Guys, promise me you'll tell me if there's someone behind me." Thomas piped up while trekking through the streets. Everyone monotonously agreed, not fully paying attention.
"Guys, c'mon!" Thomas whined incessantly, sounding like a little kid. You giggled and assured him you'd keep an eye out, and he seemed to calm down at those words.
With that, the group gaming really started up. It was weird without Thomas being online and his little character not moving around, but his constant talking filled the void.
On the other side of the screen you were reeling at the sight of Newt. He was focused on the game, lip between his teeth, brows taut, and messy, thick, blond hair splayed over his forehead like a golden crown. Brown eyes constantly flickering around the screen but somehow finding their home on you in the end—or at least you hoped.
Newt was thinking similar things about you. Eyes catching your form every time you moved your hair to the other shoulder, or ran your hand through it. He tried not to be obvious and strayed away from glancing over at every movement, but it was hard. If he caught your gaze, he would waggle his brows a bit, and you would dissolve into that cute little smile that lit up his stomach in butterflies. Thankfully, no one noticed your interactions—or at least that's what both of you told yourselves.
By the time Thomas got to his own apartment, and those affected rebuilt their in-game homes, things were slowing down and tiredness overcame most of you. Even Minho's shit talk from behind Newt had almost came to a halt. The first one out was Gally, claiming he had work tomorrow. Next was you.
“G’night, you guys. I have a 9 am Zoom class tomorrow, I gotta be up early.” You grumbled. A hand came up to lazily rub at your eyes as you carried your phone to your room, and Newt resisted the urge to say something along the lines of 'goodnight sweetheart' (which he didn't know why that popped up in his brain).
The group of guys chorused a goodnight to you, all waving. Newt stared at your image, your sweet smile that would stick in his mind long after you hung up. The sound of you leaving echoed in his brain as he stared at the spot where you once were. That is, until Alby's video replaced where yours once was and he scowled.
"What's with the stink face?" Thomas gawked at his friend from where he laid on his bed, phone sat up next to him on the pillow. His friends sudden smile turning into a stoic expression startled him.
"His girlfriend left, that's what." Minho said, walking up behind Newt. Min placed his hands on Newt's shoulders, and the blond shot him a dirty look, shaking his hands off.
"Shut up. The fuck does that mean?" Newt grumbled. Everyone seemed to notice how bothered Newt sounded, which only made smirks grow wider. Everyone but Tommy, who was just about half asleep by now.
"Ahhh," Minho started and tapped Newt's bicep, "just as we all thought." Minho left it at that and stood up straighter, hands on his hips. Newt looked up at him entirely confused.
"Do you guys talk outside of the groupchat?" Alby asked.
"We talkin' about Y/n?" Thomas slurred out.
"Yes, dumbass." Minho leaned down so Thomas could see his annoyed face, but his eyes were closed.
"Uhhhh, not too much, no." Newt shrugged. "Why does it matter?"
Minho gave him an 'are you actually stupid?' type of look, arms crossing as he gazed down at his best friend. "'Why does it matta?'" He mocked his accent, "It matters cause it'll show her you like her!" Arms flew up in the air, as if the answer was obvious.
All Newt could manage to do was look to the side, tongue to his cheek as he ignored the blossoming blush thanks to the topic.
"Min is right, dude! You should talk to her more." Alby's words seemed more encouraging than Minho's. Maybe it was due to the fact that all Minho ever expressed was sarcasm and disdain, but Newt just didn't find him as earnest as Alby at the moment.
"They're right," Thomas piped up, lazy smile on his face. "She's super easy to talk to."
"What?" They all bellowed out in unison.
"You talk to her?" Newt was flabbergasted at this new revelation.
"Uh, duh. She's my best friend. So what?" Thomas scrunched up his brows, eyes cracking open.
Newt just scoffed and shook his head. He wasn't jealous, just.. at a loss for words. "Alright, on that note, goodnight." Newt punctuated his goodbye with a press to the 'end call' button.
The black screen faced both boys, and Newt quickly stood, beelining for his kitchen to make some tea.
"Dude, you call me dramatic." Minho grumbled. Newt just gave him the umpteenth pointed look of the night from his spot next to the sink. As soon as the blond turned around to put the kettle on, filling it up for two, Minho let his knowing smile show.
"You stayin' the night?" The older one called from the kitchen. He decided to ignore whatever that humiliating topic was prior.
Minho plopped down on the couch, head in the pillow, and fishing for the television remote. "You know it." He said. It wasn't odd for Minho to spend the night, as the couch was honestly dedicated to man at this point. Newt liked the company anyways.
The best friends fell into a rhythm of one finding a Netflix show and the other preparing two mugs of tea (Minho usually detested it, claiming it was too British for him, but he surprisingly learned to like it. He would never admit it, but he actually found himself making some tea when he was at home).
Newt had the previous short conversation replaying in his mind over and over as he zoned out while waiting for the water to boil. Did he really like Y/n like that? Yeah, she was gorgeous, and he always found himself looking for her approval and reactions, but he didn't want to be that guy who liked the only girl in the friend group. Although, he knew the situation wasn't really like that.
As Newt brought over the steaming hot mugs and sat on the opposite couch from his friend, waiting for whatever action movie was pulled up to play, he decided talking to Y/n more wasn't such a bad idea.

Mum and Dad (Newt x Reader)
AU: “You’re the mom friend of the group and I’m the dad friend of the group, I think we should get together, y’know for the kids.”
I know that Minho is totally the dad of the friend group, but we’re switching that to Y/n for a sec. Newt is still the mom cause we love our British Glade mother.
F/s: favorite sport
F/t: favorite team of said sport
“Newt, where do you keep your beer?” Thomas rifled through Newt’s fridge.
“Uh, bottom left.” Newt said from the stove. “Though this is your second. Watch out.” Thomas sighed but put the beer back.
“And… uh, did you buy the feminine products?” Sonya nudged.
“Yep. They're in the bathroom in the little brown box above the toilet.” Newt nodded, glancing back at his sister.
“Thanks.” Sonya rushed to the bathroom.
“Thanks, mom.” Minho joked from the couch. Y/n glared at him.
“Hey, Newt?” Y/n called to the boy. “Do you need any help in there?”
“No, I’m good. I’m almost done. And you already helped with drinks.”
“Okay.” Y/n sat back and held a hand out to Brenda.
Brenda stared at her hand before wondering, “What are you doing?”
“I want some of your goldfish.”
“No!” Brenda shielded her food. “Go get your own!” Y/n gave her a look and Brenda sighed before offering her some.
“Thanks!” Y/n happily crunched on the snack.
“Hey, Y/n,” Gally said, heading to sit down next to the girl. “Could I borrow a ten?” Newt scoffed from the kitchen. Gally rolled his eyes at the noise.
“What for?” Y/n twisted away from him. “This is, like, the fifth time!”
“I know, but I’ll pay you back!” Gally whined. Teresa laughed at his lie.
Y/n sighed and said, “No you won’t.” Yet she still pulled out her wallet and handed him a ten dollar bill.
“Thank you!” Gally snatched the money and hopped out of his seat.
“Food’s ready!” Newt called.
“Here, lemme help.” Y/n dashed to help him. She took the heaviest dish, despite Newt’s protests, and plopped it on the coffee table. “Minho, change the channel to f/s.”
“I’m watching the amazing world of gumball!” Minho protested.
“Minho, come on.” Y/n said, “F/t is playing!”
“Newt, it’s your TV.” Minho pleaded, “Tell Y/n I can watch cartoons.”
“Hey, you heard her. It’s f/t.” Newt chided as he carried the pizza out.
“Thanks Newt.” Y/n kissed him on the cheek, eliciting a blush from him that she didn’t see.
Minho huffed and muttered something to Brenda and Sonya who laughed.
“What?” Newt asked as he sat down.
“It’s just…” Sonya started, “you’re kinda like the mum of the group and Y/n/n’s like the dad. Just think it’s interesting.”
“And why is that interesting?” Y/n asked, brows furrowed as she served everyone else before herself.
“Well,” Sonya coughed before continuing. The rest of their friends grinned while avoiding eye- contact. Sonya, being Newt’s sister and one of Y/n’s close friends, had been specifically chosen for the task. “Mom and dads are usually… together. In an intimate relationship. It’s obvious you two like each other. Why not get together for us kids?”
Y/n’s face flushed at the end of her sentence and she couldn’t look at Newt. “Just… put on the game.” She finally managed to say.
Minho shot a tense glance at Thomas. Did they do the right thing by trying to force their friends to see their feelings?
The low mumblings of conversation slowly stirred as the f/s played. Y/n still couldn’t look at Newt, her face still bright red.
“You okay?” Newt whispered to her. “Sonya shouldn’t have said that if it made you uncomfortable.”
“No, no.” Y/n stretched her feet out onto the ottoman. “It didn’t make me uncomfortable.” She didn’t take her eyes off the TV.
“Seriously, are you okay?”
“I- I guess I’m trying to gauge your emotions. Did you feel disgusted when Sonya said we should date?” Y/n took a big bite of her pizza.
“No! No!” Newt loudly said, gaining the attention of their friends. He lowered his voice. “I wouldn’t mind at all if we dated.”
“So you want to date?” Y/n asked hesitantly.
“Do you?”
“I mean, I don’t know.”
“Oh my god!” Thomas cried out, “Just go on a shucking date!”
Y/n went back to staring at the TV, her blush now ten- fold.
The conversations returned. After a while of awkward silence between Y/n and Newt, Y/n broke the silence. “Coffee? Tomorrow, 10 am?”
Newt hid his smile. “I would love that. Can’t wait.”
“Thank god.” Brenda mouthed to Sonya who was just happy to see her friends find happiness.

'wckd is good' part 2 - newt
Based on a past request for a Maze Runner fic set in the MCU where Newt was Venom, Reader was Spider-Woman.
part one / masterlist
a/n yes this is wayy longer than i expected lmao but i choose to see this as a good thing
Tumblr media
Running has always been easier than staying to face the truth. As you swing back through the dark city, you hear Newt’s words echoing in your head with every snap of web hitting concrete and glass. It is foolish to let one conversation shatter your entire worldview, but even running can’t convince your mind to settle back the way it had been. Newt has done his part well.
Worst of all, you think he was right about you, about everything. Usually, when the moon hangs low over the city such that its glow can be hidden by the shadows of the skyscrapers around you, your worst fears about this city seem like they couldn’t be more true. On nights like these, you always see a monster lurking in the face of every man, the darkness bleeding from every eye. Now, though, in every face you see only a blond boy grinning back at you. If the worst monster you’ve seen lately was just a kid like you, what does that say about every creature you’ve killed in the name of preserving the peace? What does that say about you?
You don’t get into any more confrontations that night, electing instead to perch on the edge of a dark roof and watch the lights of the cars go by far below you. Your shift ends, but you only return to WCKD headquarters when you’re certain no one else will be there. A few rooms have lights on, but you avoid them as best you can. There is no one you want to see right now. No, not true— there is one person you want to see, but if he’s in WCKD’s clutches, it’s all over.
Sleep comes fitfully that night, as it has every night before that and will every night again. You see Newt reaching out a hand to you, smiling easily, but then his jaw ripples and the monster’s awful fangs come out again, distorting his charm into something terrible. You wake up screaming; for you or for him, you can’t be sure.
Even more restless than usual that morning, you decide to go on a walk to clear your head. Normally, walking around in the bright sunshine, seeing the smiling families, the upturned faces, all serves to lift your mood. A strong city is a happy city; this is why you do it, remember? You protect these people, all of them. It’s worth every sacrifice.
Turning down another street, though, your spirits refuse to lift. How many more people would be here if you hadn’t been in charge of taking them out? How many times did you get it wrong? How many Albys do there have to be before you realize that you can’t make judgment calls on someone’s life?
Lost in thought, your guard slips unconsciously. You don’t notice the hand snaking out to grab your arm until someone’s already pulled you under a shadowy overhang. Immediately, you’re on high alert, grabbing a knife from your belt to press against their throat, but your attacker just laughs. It is this sound and this sound alone, that call like the high-pitched ring of a bell, that stops you from slitting his throat.
“You shouldn’t have done that, Newt,” you warn him as you pull your knife away from his neck.
For someone who’s life almost ended, he seems remarkably unaffected by your words. “It’s lovely to see you, too. Didn’t realize you remembered my name.”
You roll your eyes. “It’s my job to know things. Don’t take it personally.”
“Yes, Y/N, because it would be terrible to not be as affectionate as you,” Newt muses. “Forgive me for wanting to be friendly.”
“Being friendly gets you killed.” You remark plainly. “So does trying to sneak up on an assassin. Don’t let that happen again.”
You turn away and walk back onto the sidewalk. Newt, however, just joins you without a heartbeat’s delay. “It’s not up to me whether this happens again. I think you wanted to see me a little more than you care to admit.”
You shoot him an angry look, but Newt remains resolutely cheerful. “You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Don’t I?” Newt asks. Without giving you a chance to interject, he carried on blithely, “Or maybe you’re right. Here, I’ll give you a chance to prove it. I’m meeting up with some friends tonight to discuss our favorite enemy. If you don’t want any of this, feel free to stay away. Or don’t.”
He casually passes you a folded paper that’s been creased from staying in his pocket. A quick glance towards its contents reveals a place and time.
You arch a brow. “If this little gathering is happening so you can denounce WCKD, I don’t think giving the location to one of its best soldiers is really the brightest idea.”
Newt lifts a shoulder. “That’s what they said too, but I know what I saw last night. They don’t have a chokehold on you, Y/N, despite what you might try to tell me. Somewhere in there,” he says, brushing a hand against your temples, “you want out. Let me help you with that.”
You press your lips together, thinking. Going could be suicide. What if this is just a trap to take out WCKD’s finest agents one by one, and Newt’s just telling you this so he can lure you into letting your guard down?
At the same time, your mind whispers selfishly, what if he isn’t lying? What if there was a world without WCKD? You haven’t dared to let yourself imagine such a thing in a long time; security cracked down after Thomas and Minho ran away a year or so ago. There’s no way they’d let you go without a fight. If Newt’s friends had your back, then maybe, just maybe, you might win this one.
“You told your friends about me? Moving awfully fast, aren’t you?” You question.
Newt grins. “Don’t take it personally, baby. I tell them a lot. Doesn’t mean we aren’t special, of course, but you wouldn’t be the first girl I’ve brought home.”
You laugh, surprising yourself. “No need to get carried away.”
“Too late,” he says, smiling back at you, and then he turns down a corner and disappears into the crowd. You’re left clutching the note, wondering if this mistake might cost you your life, and if you’re leading any sort of life that’s worth saving to avoid a chance like this.
You shouldn’t go. Odds are, WCKD has someone tailing you, and even though you’re always careful to shake anyone you even suspect to be following you, there’s no way to tell for certain that you got rid of everyone. You check your clothes and personal items thoroughly for recording devices every time you leave WCKD headquarters, but what’s the precautions of one girl against such a massive organization?
You check the note once, twice, and then again. The time is later tonight, the pickup location outside the docks near the south of the city. Newt hasn’t given you many hours to deliberate, although you suspect that was intentional. The less time you have to ponder about whether or not you’ll take him up on his offer, the less time you have to turn them into WCKD if you decide to betray him instead of trying to run.
In the end, you put away your sense of self-preservation and head out again. You aren’t scheduled to go out on patrol until tomorrow, so you’ll have plenty of time in case something happens. You don nondescript clothing and pull a baseball cap low over your head to disguise your face. After taking a long, roundabout way to the docks to avoid suspicion, you stand on a pier, watching the dark water go by.
It was smart of them to pick this place. The sound of the tides, the churning of the boats up and down the water, the roaring of distant traffic echoing off of the tall buildings, all serve to muffle the sound of the strangers as they walk up to you. Normally, you’re able to sense trouble when it comes to you, but maybe your reflexes decide that your assailants aren’t a threat before your head makes that call, because you don’t notice anyone sneaking up behind you until they’ve already shoved a dark hood over your head and clamped a mouth over your hand to silence any shouts.
The second the hood is pulled over your eyes, you’re swimming in dark danger. You can feel the heartbeats of the people around you; four of them, men, young men. Boys. Newt’s age. Your age. They’re desperate, you can taste their fear like metal on your tongue. One of them has a limp. If you strike now, you could break a leg, roll away long enough to get the hood off of your head, then kill them all. They’d be dead before they even hit the ground. The blood would run scarlet into the river and ruin your last chances of leaving this hell. You’d be alive, though. Isn’t that why you do all of this, to live? Isn’t that the only motivation any of us have ever had?
A whisper in your ear, sharp and urgent:  “Trust me. Please.”
Newt.
You don’t trust people. You shouldn’t. He knows this. If Newt set you up to die, though, he would have killed you already. Newt’s monster doesn’t need to sneak up on you and blind you to kill you. One snap of those jaws would do the trick. If Newt wants you to play by these shifty rules, there must be a reason. Strangely enough, you realize that you believe in him enough to want to know what that reason is.
You comply, going limp long enough for the others to seize hold of your arms and take you with them into a waiting car. They intentionally take a confusing, circuitous route so as to confuse you. Still, you carefully note each turn, how long you stop at traffic lights or stop signs. Then you’re bustled out of the car again and into a building with tall ceilings; you can tell from how your footsteps echo against the top that the sound has a long way to go.
Eventually, you’re sat down on a chair, your hands bound behind you. The others hover nearby, you can sense their presences. There are more of them now, probably a dozen. Mostly inhumans, with the occasional exception. Not bad numbers, but not enough to really challenge WCKD. That’s why they’ve gone to you, though, you suppose. Foolhardy, but not completely insane.
A voice, loud and challenging, calls you sharply back to reality. “Y/N. You work for WCKD, don’t you?”
“Yes,” you answer deadpan. “None of you do. That’s why you were so kind as to bring me here, right? You were desperate. Now, can you take this hood off of my head? I would hate for you to miss anything I said.”
The loud boy scoffs. “There’s no way we’re letting you get a good look at us. You’d just turn us in.”
You cock your head to the side, staring exactly where you think the boy’s eyes are. “Would I? I don’t need my sight to do that. There are fifteen of you in this room right now, but that’s not all of you. About five leaders, I think. All teenagers. One adult, though. He drove. And one little boy. I can hear your heartbeats. I know who you are.”
A young voice lets out a muffled complaint from the far side of the room. “I’m not a little boy.”
Instantly, he’s shamed into silence. “Shut it, Chuck. Don’t give yourself away.”
A weakness. You grin, even though they can’t see it. “Chuck? That’s the boy, then. If I looked up connections between boys named Newt and Chuck, how long do you think it would take for me to track all of you down? I’d start by checking security cams near the docks. We’re in the warehouses near the docks. I’d guess the third from the left in the second row, yes? Usually used for temporary storage of agricultural products, but you’re in between seasons, so it’s empty for now and you’ve been borrowing it for meetings.”
A collection of gasps confirms your theory. You press on. “I know where you are, I know who you are. Bonds and a hood won’t keep me. Hell, I don’t even need you to undo me. I can manage that by myself.”
See, your would-be captors were so distracted by their own seeming safety that they didn’t check to make sure your wrists were fully together when they tied you down. Also, they were so stunned by you being able to catch onto them that they didn’t notice you slowly pulling a blade from your sleeve, nor spot when you sawed through your bonds. You stand up easily, toss the ropes to the ground, and pull the hood from your head.
You’re greeted with fifteen shocked faces. Well, fourteen. One’s grinning proudly. Newt. He winks when you catch his eye, but he’s careful not to let his friends see. Another boy, with close-cropped hair and a dark glare, looks particularly unhappy about your little escape. This is the one who had been speaking to you, you assume, and there’s the man in the back who drove you here. Silver touches his dark hair near his temples, but he looks intimidating enough anyway. Close by him is a girl about your age.
The angry boy who had spoken earlier groans in disgust. The angrier he gets, the more his eyes start to flicker, turning from green to a fiery red. Sparks flash along his clenched fists. Another inhuman, then. Fire powers. He’s probably somewhere on your list. “Who tied her up? Winston, you know to make the bonds stronger than that.”
“Wasn’t his fault,” you call out, and hold up the knife you’d disguised in your sleeve to make your point.
The boy groans again. “What is that? No one checked her for weapons?”
“You certainly didn’t, Gally,” Newt points out.
The boy– Gally– tosses Newt an irritated look. “Don’t start with me, Newt. I bet you’re just delighted with her for this bit of showmanship, aren’t you?”
“Very,” Newt says, grinning over at you.
Gally looks like he can’t decide who he wants to throttle more, you or Newt. “Fine. Fine. Let’s get started, if that’s what you really want. How do we know we can trust you?”
“You’re the ones who kidnapped me,” you argue. “I think I should be asking that question first.”
Gally might actually try to kill you this time, so Newt quickly steps in before things can escalate further. “Play along, will you?” Newt asks. “We’ll get nowhere if both of you are bickering the whole time.”
You sigh. “Alright, fine. If I wanted to turn you guys in, you’d already be dead. WCKD doesn’t cut corners, you know that. We would have burned your entire establishment to the ground. Happy?”
“Very,” Gally remarks dryly. “We’re familiar with your typical way of handling things, thank you very much. We know how WCKD operates.”
“If you know so much, why do you need me?” You ask. “Newt knew where to find me even on my off day. I’m assuming you’ve done your research thoroughly or you’ve got a source, in which case you’d have no reason to reach out to me, too. Why take a risk like this?”
“Because our source is no longer in WCKD,” Newt interjects. “Our information is out of date. We want more relevant gossip, to put it plainly.”
You frown. “You used to have a source in WCKD? Who?”
Newt goes silent, something almost like pity in his eyes. Gally, unencumbered by weak things like empathy, answers your question. “Thomas.”
You draw in a harsh breath. “You know Thomas?”
This changes the whole situation. Thomas– Thomas was everything. He and Teresa were the very first to show up to WCKD. You were the third, but they’d been there for at least a year before you. It changed them, you think. It made them closer than anyone else. When Thomas left, it destroyed Teresa. You and Teresa have known each other for years now, but it’s nowhere remotely close to the bond she shared with Thomas. Nothing can ever match that.
Thomas had been the last of the good ones, you think. After he left, everything was ruined. It was the first sign of the end of days. If Thomas, Thomas the believer, Thomas, the one who was willing to give everything to cause even when it left him broken and bloody, could walk away, what claim did the rest of you have to anything at all?
Thomas’ departure changed the way that WCKD worked. Neither Thomas nor Teresa had been true experiments. Teresa was trained as a Black Widow, and Thomas made himself an indestructible shield, running around the city as Captain America and saving people wherever he went. They juiced him up a little to make him stronger, but nothing as intense as the rest of you. No cuts were made.
Thomas was the last ideal any of you had that humanity could be protected by other humans. Once Thomas was gone, WCKD started up their labs in earnest. Now, almost every one of their teenage recruits is modified in some way. They say it’s because you have to fight fire with fire, that you can’t possibly compete with mutants if you’re not more than human yourself, but many terrible things have been done in the name of scientific progress. This would not be the first.
And now you find out that Thomas had once been here. Thomas had been friends with everyone in this room. You look wildly from face to face, expecting to find the boy you had once pledged to defend until your dying breath. The two of you had saved each other on countless dangerous missions, but now he’s just gone, and you aren’t even entirely sure that you would recognize him were you to see him again.
Newt saves you from the peril of not knowing. “He’s not here,” he answers you gently. “Thomas got out. He told us to try to reach you, though. Said you could be trusted.”
“Not Teresa?” You ask softly. That surprises you. If Thomas could save anyone, wouldn’t it be her?
Newt shakes his head. “He said Teresa was better than him. She would never leave.”
“But I would?” You say bitterly.
“He knew you could save us, not just the city,” Newt supplies. You’re not sure if that makes it all better or worse, but it is an answer to fill the empty silence curling between your ribs, so that helps with something, at least.
You nod curtly. “Alright, then. If you’ve got Thomas on your side, I’ll help. Just– have you seen him recently? Is he still alive? I would ask on my end, but I don’t know if WCKD would tell us if they– if they killed him.”
Gally looks vaguely irritated. “No, the asshole’s still alive. He’s a major pain, won’t stop asking questions or getting in the way we do things, but he’s still kicking.”
You grin in spite of yourself. “That’s Thomas for you. He has a way of getting under your skin. He means well, though.”
Newt laughs. “That’s one way of putting it. He skipped town a week or so back. Said he was going to try to look for an old friend.”
At first, you’re confused about who that would be except for you and Teresa, and then– Oh. It hits you like a tidal wave. “Minho.”
Newt nods. “You knew him too?”
You smile. “The four of us were always the closest. Maybe we can do a little family reunion if I can get away without WCKD always watching my back.”
Gally coughs pointedly. “Let’s get back to business. You can reminisce later about the good old days of killing mutants together. You’re willing to help?”
You incline your head. “As best I can. Tell me what you need and I’ll do my best to get it. It might be slow going at first, I’ve got to divert suspicion, but I have access to just about everything. Perks of working for them since I was small. Satellite feeds, location tracking, anything.”
For the first time all night, you think Gally smiles. “You know what, I think we just might be friends after all.”
Isn’t that a lovely thought? As it turns out, Gally isn’t wrong. Days turn into weeks, and the information you accumulate for Newt’s friends steadily turns into a virtual mountain. You find mutants for them, people with abilities who WCKD would kill but they can save. They have friends, too, who are already on WCKD’s radar and need to be removed from the list. You pretend to kill them to erase any sign of their existence. After that, they can run without getting gunned down when they try to leave the city. WCKD has this place on lockdown, the only way you can escape their clutches is in a bodybag, so you fake that part and everything goes according to plan.
You usually rotate members of Newt’s group when handing off information to avoid suspicion, but your favorite blond shows up the most often. You heard one of the other boys grumbling once that Newt has a habit of insisting that it be him to meet up with you, even threatening to set his monster on someone who argued too hard against it, but that just makes you laugh. Newt’s a sweetheart. He wouldn’t hurt any of his friends to stop them from flirting with you. Hopefully.
One evening, the two of you are walking along the river for such a handoff when Newt breaks the one boundary both of you have had the good sense to maintain and asks you when you’re going to leave along with them. Newt’s friends aren’t interested in making a stand against WCKD, they just want to get the last of their allies out of the city before the whole thing burns down.
The more you research on Newt’s behalf, the more you realize how precarious the whole affair is. WCKD has no surefire way of keeping crime out. Their only solution for stopping violence is to nip it in the bud, so to speak, but innocents get caught in the crossfires more often than not. The murder rate is skyrocketing anyway. Nothing any of you do will matter in the long run, and it just puts the teenagers WCKD hires in harm’s way more than the adults who hide in the wings and keep their hands clean.
It’s like working just downhill from a volcano. At some point, the lava will flood into your streets and engulf you all in an inferno of blood and tears. You pretend that you can just work hard enough to fight that, but it isn’t working. It hasn’t since the start. You can push off the inevitable a few weeks, but it always comes in the end.
That’s why Newt and his friends are so interested in getting out. WCKD keeps clear tags on all mutants and inhumans in the area. The second any of you try to run, they send an assassin out to kill you. Supposedly, it’s all about containing the threat, but none of this has ever been about having a good motive, no matter what you say. Everything leads back to power. If you run the city with all the inhumans, you have more power than the rest. Easy as that.
You’ve been steadily helping people escape. Chuck was one of the first to go, all of you agreed. He was just a kid, hardly twelve. He ended up on WCKD’s list because he figured out how to turn his flesh and bone into any material. Soft skin could become as hard as diamond or as pliable as water in a second if he just thought about it. Often, he didn’t, electing instead to just ignore his mutation in favor of trying to blend in with the rest of the guys he idolized, but WCKD doesn’t forget as easily as a preteen.
There were others, too. Clint, a boy about your age, who could heal from any injury. Frypan found an old spell book and learned how to cook up portals to other places and fantastic rings of glowing energy. Zart could shrink as small as an ant or grow taller than a skyscraper. Jorge had a mechanical suit impervious to most attacks that let him fly so long as he kept it up to date; he taught a girl named Brenda how to do the same. They don’t like being apart.
Only a few remain now. Newt, with his monster. Gally, with his fire abilities. You, with your webs. Thomas has appeared a few times now to help ferry people out of the city. The first time you saw him, you nearly wept. It was like seeing a ghost. You assumed he had died a long time ago, but then you’d walked into the warehouse one day and there he was, making a sarcastic joke to Newt. He’d turned to look at you as you slowly approached, and said it was good to see you again. It had taken everything in you not to break down at that very moment.
So he’s alive, then, and Minho is too. Hypothetically, the rest of the boys you’ve been slowly ferrying out are with them. In reality, you have no idea if any of them managed to survive past the edge of the city, but you can hope. That’s all any of you have at this point, hope that someday, you’ll all live past WCKD’s imposed expiration date.
There is, of course, the idea that once the last of them leave, you’ll be left alone with the organization you’ve been steadily betraying, but truth be told, you thought you’d be found out long before the last of Newt’s crew left, so that decision was never going to be yours to make anyway.
Newt doesn’t care about that, though. Newt has told you that he’d break into WCKD headquarters all by himself if you were captured or discovered. So of course it makes sense that Newt is the one to look you in the eyes at last and ask when– not if, but when– you’d be leaving with the rest of them.
You let out a shaky breath. “I wasn’t under the impression that I would be going with you.”
Newt reacts as if you’ve slapped him. “Why wouldn’t you? You don’t believe in WCKD anymore. Burn them to the ground one last time, then leave with us.”
You sigh. “I would be abandoning the only life I’ve ever known. If I leave, WCKD would know for certain that I’d betrayed them, if they haven’t figured it out already. They have evidence of dozens of murders I’ve committed. If they wanted to, they could release that information and have the police drag me back to them. WCKD doesn’t like it when their experiments try to run away.”
You learned that lesson well enough with Thomas. Newt’s jaw locks at the mention of what WCKD had done to you, but he manages to keep his cool. “Exactly why you should leave. Where we’re going, no one will find us. It’s wild land in the middle of nowhere. There’s a total maze of forest cutting off outside access. We’ve got farmland and a big house for all of us. It’ll be a simpler life than we’re used to leading, sure, but no one can find us there. You’ll be safe, Y/N. We all will.”
You’re not sure if you want to laugh or cry at the fierce hope in his eyes. “Do you really believe that?”
“Yes,” Newt says decisively. “We’re so close, Y/N. Most of us are gone, only a few left. Promise me that you’ll go with us when the last of us leave. Maybe we can fake our deaths or something to stop them from looking. Just promise me you won’t let me leave alone.”
Promises are dangerous. They have a way of being broken. Still, you nod, and press your fingers against his when Newt takes your hand. “I’ll do it. I promise.”
A sunrise of a smile splits Newt’s face. “I’m holding you to that.”
You hope against everything that he does. To be honest, hearing him talk, you almost think that you could do it; make it out alive. The last few kids are shipped out of the city, and then Newt meets up with you, says that only he and Gally are left. It’s time to go. You agree to meet him that night to run. You haven’t let your hopes truly rise all this time, but it’s impossible to avoid now. A life without killing. It seems like a dream, but it might be yours after all.
And then, a few hours before you’re scheduled to meet Newt to leave the city behind, you get a call from WCKD saying they want to meet with you to discuss recent progress. You text Newt from a burner phone telling him that you might be late and to go on without you if you take too long. You know he won’t, but the comforting lie that he might make it out without getting caught up in your capture carries you to WCKD.
Your heels click on the tiled floor. You know everyone here, you have since you were small. That fact used to fill you with pride; after years of watching people get replaced, you alone stayed, along with Teresa. You had what it took to put your life on the line and keep going. You were the best of the best.
Now, it just seems like another betrayal. How could all of those people watch you grow up and still condone what they had forced you to do? You try to imagine making Chuck go out and hunt down kids his age. It makes you sick to your stomach. All of these people are complicit in the blood caking your hands, and they will never, ever be accountable for it.
You’re certain that they must know what you’ve done. You walk to the conference room in a haze. Newt is on the other side of the city by now. Maybe he’s already out. Maybe they’re all out. If there was one good thing you did in your life, you couldn’t be more proud that it was for him. After years of senseless death, you saved the lives of other mutants just like you. It won’t be enough to wash your ledger clean, but it’s a start. It’s a shame it’s all over now. No more chances to improve. Just one last opportunity to die.
You walk into the meeting room and take the only empty seat. Around you are many familiar faces. Dr. Ava Paige sits at the head of the table, her second in command, a sickly man named Janson at one side, Teresa at the other. Teresa eyes you with no small amount of judgment. How righteous she must feel, knowing that of the three kids who started it all, she alone was capable of carrying out the blessed mission without getting corrupted. How challenging, to wonder why both you and Thomas needed to leave and she could never find a reason why.
Other WCKD officials and high-level agents crowd the ranks. There are only a dozen people in here, maximum, but Ava Paige has chosen them well. They’re all older than you, making the aura in here quite sinister indeed.
Once you’ve sat down and the door closes behind you (do you hear a lock slide shut, or are you just paranoid?), Dr. Paige begins. “We’ve had reason to worry about you, Y/N,” she says. “You’ve always been one of our best agents, but your quotas have been down as of late.”
“By quotas, you mean the people that I’ve killed, correct?” You clarify, sending a ripple of whispers around the room.
Dr. Paige’s face tightens. “I refer to the threats you have eliminated from our glorious city, but if that’s the way you’d like to put it, fine. You have killed fewer times, yes. Why?”
“Maybe I didn’t find any more threats,” you reply.
Janson arches a brow. “There are always threats. Have you lost your stomach for it?”
You smile, although the expression is cold. “I have a question, Dr. Janson. Why is it always me?”
He frowns. “Pardon?”
“Why is it always me out there in the field?” You repeat. “All of you in this room would rather send a child out to kill inhumans than do it yourselves. Does that ease your conscience? Does it reduce variables of concern for human life if you force a teenager to kill instead of doing it yourself?”
Ava Paige rises to her feet. “Y/N L/N, you have been a part of this organization since the start. I remember when you were fiercely dedicated to the cause. Don’t tell me you’re walking away now because you’ve decided to reinsert morals into the equation. What about the people who will die because you are no longer willing to protect them?”
“I’ll find another way to protect them,” you shoot back, “One that doesn’t involve murdering people just because you think they might one day become a problem.”
“That’s naive and you know it. You can’t leave,” Dr. Paige says, her face bleached pale.
“Why not?” You ask. “Are you afraid that I’ll tell people what you had me do? What will you do to stop me?”
When she remains silent, you realize that it’s not just you who has something to fear from WCKD’s actions becoming public. They’ve sanctioned killing dozens if not hundreds of times. They can’t afford to call you back without letting all of their dirty secrets go, and that is a loophole you will most certainly exploit.
You stand. “I think we’re done here. I am.”
They don’t try to stop you. Teresa, however, runs out the door after you. “Don’t you leave us, Y/N. You know what WCKD means to this city.”
“I know what it means to innocent inhumans who have to fear for their lives every time they leave their homes,” you retort.
She pulls you into an empty room. In the half-light of the nearby windows, her eyes are frantic. “You’re the only one I have left. The only one who believed like I did. You know we have a responsibility to this city.”
“Not like this,” you whisper sadly. “Teresa, you know this isn’t the way. We can still save the world in our own right, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of this much blood. There are other ways.”
“What, like with that little group of mutants you’ve been running around with recently?” Teresa’s voice is shrill, and you feel your blood ice over in your veins. “I know, Y/N. I know everything. I know you’ve been feeding them information. You’ve been working with the enemy all along.”
“Then why haven’t you turned me in yet?” You ask quietly. “That would be what WCKD wanted, to know about moles or liars. Why are you telling me this now?”
She’s silent for a while, then:  “I wanted to know why you would throw all of this away for nothing.”
“It wasn’t nothing,” you tell her. “I made friends there. Real friends, who wanted me to be safe.”
“They’re not your friends, I am. Those are perfect strangers who could be planning to kill you the second you all leave the city. You can’t trust any of them.” Teresa argues.
You look her steadily in the eyes. “Maybe not, but I trust Thomas.”
That finally gets through to her. Teresa rears back. “No. He wouldn’t–”
“He would,” you continue. “I’ve seen him, Teresa. He knows all of my friends. Thomas is the one who wants us to get out alive.”
She shakes her head, but the fight is gone from her eyes, you can see it. “No. That can’t be true.”
“It is, Teresa,” you say, then on a sudden urge, “Come with us. There’s still time. WCKD is going to destroy itself in a matter of months, you know this. I don’t want you there when the whole thing goes up in flames. Come with me. Stay alive.”
You reach out to her, but Teresa backs away slowly. “I can’t abandon the cause,” she whispers.
It hurts like a broken bone, but you can’t say you didn’t see it coming. “Goodbye,” you tell her at last. “Thank you for being my friend.”
She nods once, tight and controlled. “You should go now. Before they try to stop you.”
There is nothing else to say, so you take one last look at her and run. She’s saved you one final time by not turning you in, but she’ll do no more for you from here on out. This is the end of you and her, although if you were going to be honest, you would know that your friendship effectively ended when you first started going against WCKD. Everything past that was a betrayal of your work with her, and Teresa knew it all along but didn’t say a word. She has always been the best at sacrifices, hasn’t she?
You should still have time to get to Newt before their car leaves. He’s probably stalling with everything he has so you can make it to him, and you won’t let him down now. You practically sprint out the door and down the sidewalk, hurtling towards the pickup location. Secrecy doesn’t matter anymore. WCKD caught on to the fact that you no longer want anything to do with them, and they’ll be sending someone after you to kill you soon if they haven’t already.
You whip around a few corners. You’re meeting at the docks one last time, it’s just a few corners down. You take a shortcut across a parking lot, but several dark cars screech into the space behind you just as you enter. WCKD already. You swear under your breath and pick up speed, turning down an alley so they can’t follow you except on foot.
One of your stalkers is crazy enough to run after you. He’s bigger than you, and gains ground quicker than you’d like. You take several quick turns, but can’t shake him. The alley opens up to the docks, and you sprint towards the empty pavement of the loading area. You’ve hardly left the shade of the alleys behind when someone collides with you from behind, sending both of you toppling to the ground.
You shove the man off of you, staggering to your knees to come eye to eye with Janson. “Experiments can’t leave,” he growls. “We’ll learn from your bones if not your missions.”
He draws a gun from his belt and points it at you. “Come with me, now. Don’t make this any more difficult than it has to be. I can collect your corpse if that’s easier.”
You wonder if Newt is still here, if he can hear you. You hope that he’s already gone. It’ll be far worse for him to watch you die. He’s already watched too many of his friends lose their lives to WCKD, you cannot be another one.
You hold up your hand slowly. “Don’t do something you’d regret.”
“I should be telling you that,” Janson snarls.
You wait for him to be distracted trying to move across the uneven ground, then lunge for the ground, shooting a web at his hand to muffle the trigger. He shifts at the last second, and the spider web hits the trigger instead, sending a rogue shot against the side of a nearby shipping container instead of you.
You duck on instinct, rolling away in case he tries to shoot again. Janson looks half mad as he aims at you again. “You can’t leave us,” he says, “We made you. You cannot abandon your creators.”
There’s a shadow moving somewhere behind him. With a chill, you realize you know who it is. Newt doesn’t know that Janson has reinforcements; although they’re still a little behind, they’ll catch up soon enough. You cannot afford for Newt to be caught, not now.
You shout as loud as you can, “Don’t do it! You have to run!”
Janson glances at you, confused. “Who are you talking to?”
You ignore him, calling again to the shifting mass of shadows steadily growing darker by the edge of the shipping containers. “You have to go! Leave me!”
“No,” answers the darkness slithering across the ground, forming into a massive monster behind Janson.
Janson whips around, and his eyes grow large at the sight of Newt’s monster. It snarls at him, displaying rows of wickedly sharp teeth. He tries to shoot, but the monster grabs the gun with one muscular hand, forcing it away and snapping several of the bones in Janson’s hand at the same time.
Janson screams in pain. “This is what you leave us for, Y/N? This monster? You’re no better than everyone you killed. You’ll always be a disease upon this earth.”
“Actually,” the monster corrects, “You are.”
Before your eyes, the shadows start to run away from Newt all at once, but instead of disappearing like normal, they coalesce onto Janson instead. Janson’s head is flung back as the monster enters him, eyes shot with dark veins. When it’s over, Janson is comatose on the ground, arms and face shadowed with the monster, and Newt is running over to you, human, anxiously searching you for any sign of harm.
“I’m fine,” you promise him, “But– what did you do?”
“I gave it up,” Newt says wryly. “I didn’t need the hate anymore. I just needed you to be alive.”
At last, you understand. Newt needed the monster so he could protect his friends from WCKD, but that’s over now. The last car is about to leave, and then the city, the dying, all of it will be a nightmare that has finally ended.
He grabs your hand. “We need to hurry. Jorge’s waiting, but he won’t want to stick around much longer.”
You run with him towards the waiting car. Gally’s in shotgun, and although he’s always sworn that he doesn’t need any of you, you swear he almost smiles in relief when he sees you and Newt slide in. “Way to cut it close, you guys,” he admonishes you.
Newt rolls his eyes. “We’re here now, aren’t we? Let’s go.”
“I’m perfectly fine with that,” Jorge says, and pulls away into the night.
You watch the dock disappear behind you into a web of roads and street lights. You thought it would be impossible somehow, leaving, like there would be an invisible wall to keep you here. When the lights of the city fade into a dim skyline, then vanish behind the safety of miles of distance crossed, you realize at last that you’ve done it, you’ve left. Now, all that exists for you is a wild dream of a simple life, one with your friends where no one tries to hunt you down.
Newt takes your hand and squeezes it. “We’re out,” he says.
“We’re out,” you repeat in somewhat of a daze. “Where are we going again? What’s that place where everyone’s waiting?”
Newt chuckles. “It’s a bit of a mess right now. It’s just us in the middle of nowhere, but that’s the way we like it. Thomas managed to acquire a property surrounded by parkland so no one could build nearby. It’s just us. Nice place, though. Lots of green space. We’re thinking about calling it the Glade.”
A soft smile crosses your lips. “The Glade. I like that.”
It sounds good. It sounds, at last, like a quiet end to your otherwise violent story. Sometimes, though, quiet isn’t always bad. It lets you know that you’re alive, that you made it. Quiet tells you that you’re going to be okay.

Since your first ‘official’ group hang out last Friday, you’d nearly been jumping at any opportunity to hang out with the group. Sure, when you read into it it sounded borderline creepy, but you couldn’t help it. You’d never had that much fun with your friends before, even in the city, where pretty much anything and everything was at your fingertips.
You could only compare it to the high you felt the first time you’d ever watched a musical in a theater. You were a freshman at the time, and your dad surprised you with tickets by calling you out of school in the middle of the day. You’d never forget the magical, light feeling that filled your chest throughout the show, watching everything happen all at once and so quickly, admiring the performer’s work in real time. It had been such a rush that, for the following four days, everything felt dull, and all you wanted was to relive that night over and over again for the rest of your life.
Today was Thursday, and although everyone would be hanging out again tomorrow at Mickey’s, some of the group had decided to hang out at the park again, anyway. All of you did have some form of curfew for weeknights, so it would be bordering on sunset when you would meet at the park, before one by one, you’d all have to head home at one time or another.
When you’d left school, it was agreed — everyone would meet at 6pm by the gate. But as you got home, and the evening crept onward to the time you were supposed to leave, the texts began trickling in, and before you knew it, almost everyone had canceled. Whether it was family obligations, chores, or — in Harriet and Sonya’s case — couple time to themselves, everyone who was involved in the initial plan had canceled, aside from Newt.
Not long after the final cancellation text came through — Minho, saying that his parents had family coming into town and needed to help get the house ready — your phone began to ring from its place on your bed, where you sat writing the last few sentences of your history homework.
You pushed the textbook and workbook from your lap, reaching for the phone only to see that Newt’s contact was the one lighting up your screen. You prepared for another cancellation excuse before pressing the bright green ‘accept’ button and holding the phone to your ear. “What’s up?”
Newt’s voice filtered through the speaker almost immediately. “We’re still hanging out tonight, right?”
“Yeah, we are,” you said, “but it’s just gonna be us, if that’s alright. Literally everyone else canceled.”
“Really?” Newt asked, and you muttered a confirmation in response.
You sighed, leaning back on your bed frame. “I know we were supposed to go to the park, but Minho has the key, so… is there anywhere else you’d wanna hang out?”
“Actually, yeah,” Newt replied. “I’ll be there to pick you up soon, yeah? Half an hour.”
“Got it.” You nodded. “Half an hour.”
With Newt’s final goodbye, you picked your book back up and finished off what little you had left of your history homework. As you did though, you thought about spending time with Newt, just Newt, and how you haven’t had the chance to do so since he gave you the tour of the school. The thought seemed to bring an untameable smile to your face.
Tumblr media
By the time Newt’s car appeared in the driveway, and Newt at the front door, you had packed all your schoolwork away, pushed your hair back (after attempting four different styles), and grabbed a hoodie to wear. Whatever makeup you’d put on at the beginning of the day was mostly worn off now, and you didn’t see a point in reapplying anything, because as long as your mascara and eyeliner weren’t majorly smudged, you were okay with how it looked.
Newt came in after you greeted him at the door, giving you time to gather up what you needed to and to slip your shoes on, and he talked with Maggie and your dad as they watched a movie in the living room. When you finally stepped out of the house, the sky was painted with an array of oranges, fading into various pinkish red tones, and finally, a beautiful purple that got deeper and more rich the higher in the sky it went.
“So, what are we doing tonight?” You asked as Newt reversed out of the driveway.
“I was thinking we’d grab some food from Mickey’s and hang out over on the field by the school?” Newt suggested, turning onto the main road. “Nothing extreme, y’know? We have all night tomorrow to do that.”
You nodded and told him that it was a great idea, looking out the window as he drove. It was getting visibly darker with every passing moment, and the lights on Newt’s dash and radio were glowing a bluish green when he parked in front of the diner. When you stepped out, you were met with a subtle breeze, which was quickly overtaken by the warmth of the diner.
It was quiet inside, with only a few straggling patrons scattered around. Mickey greeted you both at the counter with his usual bright smile as you sat on the stools, ready to order. “Aren’t you two supposed to be here tomorrow?”
“Yeah, but you know me, Mickey.” Newt smiled cheekily. “I just can’t get enough of your amazing food.”
Mickey laughed before taking your orders — you, another loaded burger meal and double chocolate milkshake, and Newt, a crispy chicken burger and vanilla milkshake. Newt ended up paying for the food, but only after you argued about it and settled on you paying for his food tomorrow.
You admired the retro style of the diner as you sat and waited for your food to arrive, noticing all of the pictures on the walls, the vintage clocks, and achievements the establishment had seemed to receive over the many years it’d been running. Through the order window, though, you noticed a boy your age, frying up your burger.
Newt seemed to read your mind and follow your line of sight, because not long after you noticed the boy, he told you, “That’s Frypan.”
“Hmm?”
“The cook, back there.” Newt explained. “His real name’s Siggy, but everyone calls him Fry or Frypan. Even his parents, and Mickey. Frypan’s Mickey’s grandson.”
You only nodded, waving at Frypan along with Newt when he caught sight of you and smiled politely. Once Frypan was done with your orders, he bagged them up and brought it over to you at the counter.
“What’s up, Newt?”
“Hey, Fry,” Newt said, scratching at the back of his neck. “Things good?”
“Yep,” Frypan nodded, handing over the bag of takeout, before looking over to you.
You smiled at him again and said, “I’m Y/n. Thomas’... step-sister? I think.”
Frypan laughed and nodded, his smile wider than before. “Nice to meet you, Y/n.”
“I think step-sister’s the right word,” Newt said. “Tommy told us about her, remember?”
“I remember,” Frypan nodded as he leant against the counter. “Said a lot about you when you guys would hang out and stuff. Didn’t you get him lost in Times Square once or something?”
You scoffed out a laugh. “I think he got that story mixed up. He was the one who got us lost. Dumbass thought he could get us around New York without a map because he’d been there a few times before. And he didn’t even go to Times Square any of those times, by the way.”
Both boys laughed at your retelling of the story as you smiled, watching Mickey place two to-go cups next to the bag of food. “There y’all go. I’ll see y’all tomorrow, okay?”
“Yeah, see you tomorrow, guys. See you later, Fry.” Newt nodded, waving goodbye before standing and grabbing the bag of food.
You waved the pair goodbye happily as you grabbed the drinks and slid out of the stool, following Newt out the door, blinds clanking on the door behind you, and back into the car. The sky had darkened exponentially since you’d been inside, and the brief breeze you felt when you arrived had taken a more permanent residence in the air, cooling your skin.
As Newt headed over to the school, staying on the main road, you snacked on fries from the bag that rested on your lap. A song filtered through the speakers, muffled by the static of a distant radio tower, and dim street lamps lit the way for you. You would’ve been perfectly content simply sitting in the car and driving around until curfew, but Newt had other plans.
He parked in the school parking lot, in one of the spaces closest to the field. It was unusual to see the parking lot empty, to see the school devoid of light and students lingering around. You and Newt stepped out of the car, and you followed him as he rounded the back, opening the trunk and pulling a thin blanket from it before heading out to the field, blanket tucked under one arm, a milkshake in hand and the bag of food in the other.
Soon, one milkshake became two, along with a heavy bag filled with food, and you ended up handling a minor juggling act while Newt laid out the blanket at the base of the willow tree he pointed out to you on the first day. When he was done, he took his milkshake and the bag of food from you, allowing you to sit next to him on the blanket while he sorted out the food.
For a little while, there was nothing but the sound of the wildlife at night while you enjoyed your food together. This, however, gave your mind time to wind down several paths of thought, and it didn’t take you long to put your burger back in its wrapper and face the blond to your left.
“Why doesn’t Sonya have an accent?”
“What?” Newt asked, still chewing his food.
“You have an accent.” You stated. “And Sonya’s only a year younger than you, so she should have an accent, too, right? But she doesn’t, so, why not?”
Newt swallowed his food, took a sip of his milkshake, and cleared his throat before speaking. “We moved here from London when we were pretty young. I was eight, and Sonya was almost seven. Small town people can be quite… harsh, but I didn’t quite mind what the kids in school were saying about how we talked. Sonya did, though. I guess kids in her grade were harsher toward her. Anyway, she started to train her voice to sound American, and now she doesn’t have an accent.”
All you could think of to respond was nod. It seemed like a simple enough answer, despite how heartbreaking it really was, and so you left it at that and went back to eating your burger. No more conversation occurred between the two of you until you were cramming the empty wrappers and fry containers into the takeout bag.
“Why’s your dad marrying Maggie?”
Confused, your face scrunched as you looked at Newt.
“You got to ask a question, so now I’m asking one.” Newt shrugged. “So, why’s your dad marrying Maggie?” After a moment, it seemed like Newt realized what kind of question he’d asked. “If you don’t want to answer, you don’t have to. I’m just curious.”
“No, no it’s fine.” You assured him, taking a deep breath. “It’s not his first marriage, or anything like that. And my mom wasn’t some horrible, evil woman he was just dying to get away from, either. He loved her. A lot. They met when they were teenagers and everything. She was a ballerina. A really beautiful one, too.” You explained. “When I was about seven, though, she got diagnosed with breast cancer. I can barely remember it anymore, but I know she was a great mom, and a great wife. She died when I was ten. Maggie’s the first woman I’ve met that’s been able to make my dad laugh like my mom used to.”
Newt stayed silent for a few moments, the heavy atmosphere you brought to the conversation settling in your chests. He picked at a loose thread in the blanket before speaking. “I wish my mum could find someone like that.”
“Why?” You asked, your voice soft. “What happened to your dad?”
“He’s an asshole,” Newt snapped, tilting his head all the way back to look at the pieces of sky that poked through the leaves, leaning on his elbows for support. “He moved us halfway across the world, away from my mum’s family, away from her whole bloody life, for a job offer, only to quit and chase some bleach blonde woman who’s half his age to Florida and mail my mum divorce papers. He didn’t even have the decency to sign them in person.”
The anger and resentment Newt held for his father was clear in his tone, rolling off his words in harsh waves.
Hesitantly, you placed a hand over Newt’s twisting your body to fully face him. “You’re right, Newt. Your dad is an asshole. And he missed out on watching you grow up, on seeing you turn into one of the kindest, most caring people I’ve ever met. But that just means that you didn’t need him to be the person you are today.”
Though Newt’s eyes remained on the sky, you could see tears gathering along his waterline, the gleam of the stars reflecting within them. For a moment, you both stayed that way, until Newt shifted and pulled your body into his, arms wrapping around your neck as he gripped you in a tight hug. You wrapped your arms around his torso, pulling him a little closer. The heavy atmosphere felt a little lighter, now, and you did, too, knowing that something between you and Newt had shifted, that you knew each other better now.
After the mood lifted, you both finished your drinks and laid back on the thin, cold blanket, hands on your stomachs as you talked and looked at the sky through the drooping curtains of the willow tree’s leaves.

Lilia sat back as his shoulders tensed and his hand dropped as well as his head. He turned back to Malleus and shook his head sorrily. He stood to tell Ortho that they found you as Malleus approached and carefully picked you up before taking your still body back to the others.
They were the last group to return with their heads hanging low as the others hurried to see you before noticing their dear friend not moving and the two Faes' expressions. Murderous cries and screams to pierce the silent atmosphere as hot tears dropped rolled down their faces as other mourned silently.
What if the end came faster? Too soon within a blink of an eye? Everything was once loud, came to a still silent time and all the vibrant colors gradually turned dull.
Malleus held you close before setting you down in the green grass before backing up for your creatures to approach. Pickett tried to lift your hand as well as a couple other creatures attempted the same or licking your face to get a reaction. Failing to do so, monstrous screams and shrill filled the tense atmosphere as they mourned for the person that cared for them passing.
The staff were broken up, seeing you lay there with a peaceful look on your face, and waited a while before starting to separate them and Trein casted a preserving spell so they could give you a proper burial.
Later that night, few slept and those who did, they slept in the company of their dormmates or friends. Others stayed up, staring up at the sky and letting their tears fall. The next couple of weeks would be rough for everyone, especially Grimm who refused to leave Ramshackle for a while.
A month later, there was a service arranged and a grave on the Ramshackle ground, somewhere sacred and closed off to the public. Many students from RSA and NRC attended as well as some of the students' families who met you. Cheka was holding Leona's hand tightly as he cried with the small vial of dried flowers in his hang, as well as staff of the academies. All wore black with various flowers and bouquets to place on your grave. Your creatures attended, grouping together on the other side of the crowd, and Dougal was at the front, acting as babysitter.
The staff decided that you would have a statue with your headstone on the base of it, giving everyone one last goodbye. Everyone who could pitch in for a gorgeous headstone for you as well as a beautiful statue that captured your warm and curious personality. The mirror began the service with a speech about who you were and how with each person you met, you were a light of hope before continuing. Once the mirror was done with their speech, they invited people to come up and tell stories about you. One by one, each person came up to tell the crowd about various memories and how you came crashing into their lives as well as helping even after everything. You never treated anyone or creature different, you always had room in your heart for them. Someone who could never find a monster that they couldn't love.
When it was time to say farewell, each individual came up either by themselves or with friends and family to say their last words. Others waited for the crowd to leave before saying their goodbyes and left their flowers with the many others on the steps of your statue.
As well for your creatures, each royal family or people in power made sure a sanctuary was built for your creatures within the correct habitat and were placed under protection of that kingdom or government. The sanctuary was named after and dedicated to you with a section that told visitors about your life.
Throughout the days and night, each one of or a small group of your friends would visit your grave. Each dorm leader took time out of their day and night to visit you and tell you about their day. The first-year group would come by at the end of each week to have dinner at your grave, even placing your favorite dish at your feet.
Riddle would come by and have tea with you as well as painting every other white rose while telling you about his week and ranting about the trouble Ace and Deuce would get into. Ace and Deuce would come together with Grim, spending each time as you all used to when you were still around. Later on Ace came by to say he finally took the position of Dorm leader with Deuce at his side as Vice Dorm Leader. Cater would come and give you all the spicy gossip around the school while Trey came to keep you updated about the suit group and clean you up. Chenya would visit whenever he slipped away from class.
Leona would nap in the shade of you while complaining/ filling you in on his family. Cheka would always ask Leona to go visit you whenever he visited his uncle. Ruggie would follow Leona and Cheka, and occasionally slip away from his errands to eat some donuts and talk to you. Jack would pass on his morning runs and always left a flower as well as asking for you to wish him luck on any of his competitions. He also asked for you to watch over when he became the dorm leader for Savanaclaw.
Azul would work on the bench and talk as if you were still there. Jade would drop by and leave some safe mushrooms planted. Floyd would always go and talk whenever he was in a mood. Sometimes, all three would come back from the beach with shells that they thought you would like. They have also taken a liking to Kelpie once both parties got used to the others' company.
Kalim would come with Cater and Lilia during club hours to share their recent development in their music and tell you how your creatures were doing. Jamil would often come find Kalim at your grave and would apologize for Kalim talking your ear off but would visit when he had time to have a one-on-one conversation with you.
Vil would work harder with his career in film and would come to also make sure the plants around you were well kept as well as beautiful because you only deserve the best, he would also come and rant about any of his problems before calming down and thanking you for listening. Rook would pass by and tell you about each of his finds and hunts as well as trips he took to the different places during breaks. Epel came by with the first-year group, but he would stop by to tell you about how things are with the farm and that his grandmother sends her hellos. He too would rant; he was there when he ended up becoming the dorm leader.
Ortho came by as well with the first years and would come by himself to tell you about what he and Idia were up to. he also told you about the progress they've made. He also used his cyborg suit to use and made sure your statue and bench were clean. At nights or during the middle of the day, Idia would show up to hide from others and say that he owes you one. He would tell you about his current game or show as well as the status of your creatures.
Sebek would come around and yell at students who dared to disrespect your grave. He would tell stories about you to others, good job, you've reached the ranks of Waka-sama. Silver would stop by and rest underneath the tree nearby and thank you for watching over him of any dangers during his naps. Lilia would stop by to also give you the hot gossip of the school and how malleus was doing. He also would scare students away from your grave if they got too close. At night, Malleus changed his route to stop by and have the usual nightly chats with you. He would also tell you about gargoyles and stories of his homeland. He wished you didn't leave this world so soon.
Crewel would stop by on his lunch breaks and socialize as well as rant to you. Trein would occasionally find Lucius at the foot of your statue and would apologize about you tripping over Lucius in the spirit world. He also brought his daughters along once and told them about you and would occasionally come read novels to you. Vargas would come by with eggs and ask jokingly if you're watching your health on the other side before laughing loudly. He would brag about you and your achievements to his future students. Crowley got better at being a headmaster and would come by, always apologizing for how he acted when you were around. He would tell you about the ramshackle and who took over your positions as well as bringing the new dorm leader to tell them about your legacy, hoping to spark a fire within their soul to strive to be a good person. Sam has friends on the other side who would keep tabs on you and Sam actually talked to you about things, telling you about watching all your friends during their time here.
Last, but not least, Grimm. He wouldn't come see you for a while until coming one day with the first-year group. He would come with Deuce and Ace every day. Even spent his lunch time here and went to class. He would show you how he's doing in the classes as well as brag about how great he has become. There were nights in which he slept in your jacket, curled up, whenever he had a bad dream, saying that he felt safe here in your presence like old times. You would always make sure he was covered and stayed till he fell asleep.
You smiled gently and were always there, listening to each one come by to visit. You watched each of them graduate and keep on with their lives, keeping an eye on each one. You watched Cheka grow up and get married as well as have kids while Leona would babysit the small cubs. You were remembered which caused you to be a spirit and stayed around till each one met their end, guiding them to the other side. After centuries, you mainly spent your time with Malleus and conversed with him as he laid in his bed, thinking out loud about how he would do anything to his child of man, one last time before closing his eyes. You held your hand out to him and chuckled at his astonished expression.
"What? I did say, ``Until we meet again, Tsunotarou."
I'm not going to stop writing for Newt!MC, not for a while. So, you all are stuck with me and my writing about them.

Part 2: The Badger Boyfriend
Summary: You are being hunted by the worst of the Hogwarts bullies. Rosier and Bullstrode are tired of having to put up with you being a Slytherin. Peverell and his Quidditch team are sick of your very existence.
Who better to save the day and comfort you than your amazing Spider-web Weaver boyfriend?
A/N: I use "their" pronouns here when required. Y/N could be considered gender-neutral for both chapters, coz who says a guy or non-binary can't wear a pretty lace gown? 💚
Part 2/2 to "I can protect you now"
Tumblr media
“Rosier, Bullstrode, ‘evening!” The Slytherins greeted.
Rosier and Bullstrode waved back to them as they dragged you down the stairs toward the Slytherin dungeons. You had just reached the bottom of the stairs when a head popped around the wall by the top of the staircase and shouted “Hey, y/l/n! Professor Dumbledore sent for you!”
You pushed your feet against the stone floor, forcing both yourself and the two bullies humiliating you to a stop. You waited patiently to see what the seventh-years would do: they spun around to face the Hufflepuff Head Boy, dragging you around with them.
“Say what now?” Rosier rose an eyebrow suspiciously. “Dumbledore sent for the git?”
“Haha, detention?” Bullstrode smirked. “Or has little y/n finally managed to fail Defence class?”
The Head Prefect visibly grit his teeth. “No, I doubt y/l/n’s capable of failing any class, she happens to have brains, something some people don’t.” Whoever said Hufflepuffs were known for their patience had a wild imagination, really. “Y/l/n, come on upstairs, Professor’s waiting.” With that, the Head Boy scampered out of sight.
The pair of Slytherin bullies grumbled under their breaths, shoving you away from them before stomping into the common room. With a huge sigh of relief you sprinted up the stairs, vowing to send the young DADA professor loads of Chocolate Frogs for Christmas. What could he want to see you for, though? Had you done the assignment wrong? There was absolutely no way—
“Hey.”
You jumped out of your reverie, a happy smile blooming across your face at the sight of the familiar mop of red-brown hair. “Well hello there, Newt. What are you doing here so close to Slytherin Tower?” By now you had climbed up the stairs and reached the main hallway. It was still unlike him to want to get this close to anywhere near Slytherin Tower…
“Oh- erm- I w-wanted to see you.”
You blinked. It took a few seconds for the information to process. “So Dumbledore didn’t send for me, huh? It was just the amazingly kind Head Boy helping my boyfriend."
“A-And helping you get away from… them,” he pointed out.
“Right. Bless him for that. What do you suggest I get him as a gift for Christmas as a ‘thank you’?”
Newt seriously pondered the question for a moment, while taking your hand in his and guiding you up the hallways. “He likes muggle clothes. Finds them interesting.” He answered smoothly: Newt spoke best when not self-conscious. “Likes the blue and brown suits I have.”
“Which you always look dashing in,” you complimented, pecking his cheek. You chuckled at the way he crimsoned. “Hm, I’ll get him a dark blue blazer then.”
Newt nodded his approval, subtly pulling you closer when a few meaner Gryffindors walked by.
“Newt, can I ask something?”
“Anything.”
“Where are you taking me?”
“…Forest?”
“Mhm, and why?”
“To show you. I p-practised.” He wiggled his fingers as a silent reminder of what he was talking about. You bobbed your head in response, smiling when you remembered your boyfriend was no longer a regular human wizard now.
He never was from the start. He had always been special, in the best way.
“And I’m proud of you for that, love. Can’t wait to watch you play the otherworldly hero! Wizard criminals beware: powerful, mysterious, masked hero on the loose! He kills with his bare hands, trapping villains in cobwebs with his mighty skill! He—“
“OI! Y/N! STOP RIGHT THERE!”
“Well well, if it isn’t Newt sodding Scamander.”
Bullstrode? Rosier? AGAIN? What now— Oh, they probably found out the Head Boy’s hoax.
Newt grabbed your hand and sprinted down the corridor, up a few of the moving stairs. The staircases shifted just in time, separating the two bullies from you two. They were seconds away from catching up: you ran faster and faster, pulling Newt along until you reached the one corridor that had the perfect unseen alcove.
Clearly Newt remembered it too.
He picked up pace, pulling you closer and sprinting faster. He raised his wand and pointed it to the ground, shouting out a confusion charm. A speck of gold exploded into a cloud of sparkling yellow dust, quickly growing into a wide barrier.
In less than three seconds your back was flat against the cold stone wall. Newt was squished tight against your chest: the alcove was very small. Not that you minded of course… what more could you ask for?
You ducked your head, turning away from Newt’s panting face to face the exit. You watched, silently chortling, as the older Slytherins stumbled through the yellow smoke, walked out of it spluttering and coughing, and ran straight ahead, dark wands aimlessly tossing spells back and forth.
You didn’t dare utter a word until you were certain they had disappeared around the corner. “Phew. That was close,” you whispered.
You didn’t know why you were whispering: it felt odd to speak out loud in such a calm and secretive place. Besides, the atmosphere felt… tense as it was.
You turned your head back to face your boyfriend, wondering why he was silent. “Newt?”
Newt stood there, pressing his back against the opposite wall to create as much space as possible. His face was scarlet, the blood rushing to his cheeks plenty obvious. His hands were glued to the wall on either side of your head. His usually tender eyes were on fire.
Newton Scamander wasn’t the type to pin his lover to a wall regularly, if at all. But right at this moment, it was clear he wouldn’t mind doing this more often after all.
“N… Newt?”
“Hm? Oh, s-sorry,” he smiled, lowering his head, tearing his burning gaze away from yours to check the surroundings.
“They’re gone.”
“But there’s more.”
“Huh?” You tried to duck under his arms to peek outside, but he pulled you back into the darkness. “What is it?”
“Don’t. They’re coming.”
As if on cue, footsteps began thundering across the floors of the school. Solid and heavy, rushed like they were busy people. Just a little light-footed. These were definitely not Rosier and Bullstrode.
The Gryffindor Quidditch Team. It was easy for you to recognise them just from their light-hearted, hurried footsteps.
Oh for Merlin’s sake, what are they doing here?!
“Where did Rosier say the brat went again?”
“Somewhere down this hallway. With the pathetic badger boyfriend.”
“Ah, traces of hexes. They’ve fought.”
“I sense a Confundus Charm lingering, Peverell. We should hurry and get out of here.”
“Scared of a little snake and their stuttering ba-ba-ba-badger, mate?” the Gryffindor Captain mocked.
You felt your hand on Newt’s shirt curling into a fist, longing to shoot a beautiful little hex at Peverell. Making fun of you was one thing… insulting your boy was another.
A warm hand slipped off the wall to your right, and gently patted your fist. A signal. You looked up to find him smiling back: his eyes gleamed with mischief.
Ah, yes, the side of Newt nobody else got to see. The ridiculously cheeky prick in him.
You grinned back and nodded once, cheering him on. That was all he needed. He pushed himself off the wall and shuffled closer to the doorway. Careful not to get caught, he let out his little Bowtruckle to crawl along the wall outside. After a minute and a half, the little friend returned to his open palm and pointed the exact direction the group of Gryffindors had stopped to inspect some spell-traces. “Thank you,” he mouthed, before raising his right hand. He flexed the joints, tested his wrist, aimed… and shot.
You hardly saw the string of silver that darted from beneath his sleeve, shooting towards the group like an arrow. The string of web touched the first muscular back and popped open like an umbrella, spreading its wings, wrapping all four Gryffindors present in a beautiful white cocoon. Right when the screams started mid-wrapping, you swung your wand at each of them from behind Newt’s protective frame, silencing every last one. The web then proceeded to happily wrap around their mouths as well, sealing them shut.
Perfect. “Mission accomplished.”
“Good job,” Newt complimented with a gentle, proud smile.
“You too, O Wonderful Spider-web Weaver,” you smiled back. You pulled him into a hug, wrapping your arms around his waist and back firmly. What passed today may seem like one of many minor incidents but to you, it meant the world. “You helped save me from another day of wishing they would end me already,” you thought to yourself, burying your face in his warmth. “Thank you,” you whispered out loud.
He humbly nodded, squeezing you back.
“Happy you can protect me now?” You chuckled, quoting him from a few weeks ago.
“Mhm.” His chest heaved, a silent sigh puffing out of his lips.
“Guess we don’t need to go to the Forest to see your training now…”
“…Mhm.”
“Hey Newt?”
“Hm?”
“Could we, maybe, stay in here a bit longer?”
He buried his toothy grin in your messy hair. “Mhm.”

Chapter Two
A/N: chapter two to the amelia, taryn, newt maze runner fic!!!
___
“I have no idea where that little bugger got off to.” Newt said, mostly to himself.
The girl smiled a little to herself. Newt was already a semi trusted person for her.
Considering he was the only one that seemed to care, he was a comforting presence to her.
“Chuckie! There you are, mate.” Newt clapped a small boy on the shoulder. His corkscrew curls were askew and his round cheeks were red. He smiled proudly at Newt, as if being sought out was an accomplishment.
It seemed as though this was the case for this young boy. The girl took note of his dirty clothes, rumpled hair and gloves, and determined that he probably had some sort of janitorial duties. He was probably eager to avoid those, thus being needed by the second in command was as good of an excuse as any.
“What’s up, Newt?” He threw his gloves in the bucket.
“I’d like you to meet our newest Greenie,” The girl stepped out from behind Newt and gave a shy wave.
“Holy shuck! I heard rumors about a girl, but I thought it was someone trying to pull my leg,” Chuck stood, seemingly awestruck. The girl giggled.
“Close your trap, Chuck, flies’ll get in.” Chuck’s cheeks reddened at Newt’s command, but his smile quickly returned.
“Do you remember your name yet?”
She shook her head.
“That’s okay! My name’s Chuck, and I was the Greenie before you. I klunked my pants three times before they even got me out of the box.” Newt grimaced, probably remembering.
“K-what?” She asked, eyes narrowed. The connotation of the word seemed negative, and to lead to something she didn’t necessarily want to know about.
“It means sh-” Newt clamped a large hand over Chuck’s mouth. She looked at Newt, eyebrows raised.
“Nothin’. You’ll get the hang of the Glade slang later. Anyway, Chuck is gonna show you to the kitchen, it’s almost time for dinner. Eatin’ something might make your headache go away.” At the mention, the pulsing began again.
“Okay.” She was afraid to chance a nod and make her headache worse again. Newt nodded.
“Good that.” He went off in another direction, leaving her with Chuck.
“Follow me, Greenbean! Kitchens thisaway! You came in on a good day, Frypan should be making stew today. It’s really good! Frypan gets a lot of shit for his food, but it is actually pretty good.”
A few Gladers were already lined up, bowls at the ready. Chuck grabbed two bowls and handed one to the girl.
They sat at a picnic table near the back and ate in silence for a few minutes, before Newt joined them.
“How’s your first dinner in the Glade?” He asked, spooning stew into his mouth.
The girl nodded, mid swallow.
Newt smiled a little. “Good that. Any luck on the name?”
“Not yet.”
He nodded and took another bite of stew.
“Hey, Newt, are we still having the welcome bonfire tonight?” Chuck asked.
“You know it, Chuckie boy.” The girl looked at Newt.
“It’s sort of a welcoming party,” Newt swallowed another bite of stew. “We started that tradition a few Greenies ago, usually helps the new ones get acclimated with the others.”
She nodded.
“It’s a lot of fun! Gally makes this crazy concoction, but I wasn’t allowed to have any last time since I was the Greenie. Hopefully they’ll let me have some this time!” Chuck grinned, leaving the bench to see if he could get seconds.
Newt glanced at the girl, grinning.
“It wasn’t because he was the Greenie,” He said. “It’s because it’s got some alcohol in it and he’s just a kid.”
The girl giggled at the thought of the Gladers drinking some weird drink that made their minds go to mush. She was excited to see what that did to Newt.
Chuck was a sweet kid, but there was something about Newt that just made her feel so at ease.
It could’ve been his accent, his attempts to make her more comfortable by being gentle with her, being her friend.
Chuck returned a minute later, sans seconds. Newt and the Greenie finished their stew in silence, clearing their plates and returning to the heart of the Glade to get the bonfire started.
Several boys surrounded the large pile of wood in the center of the Glade, Newt and Alby included. They all had torches and after a count of three, tossed them all into the wood pile at once. The wood immediately ignited, earning a cheer from the surrounding Gladers.
“Let’s get this party started!” Alby called, earning another cheer from the boys.
She watched as the Glade came together, surrounding the fire, a nearby sandpit, and a grill that was already being lit.
Frypan stood above the grill, tossing skewers onto it. Boys were already lined up with plates.
The Greenie giggled to herself.
Not even an hour after dinner.
Gally was nearby, stirring a giant pot with mason jars at the ready. He started spooning out varying proportions of the amber liquid that was coming from the pot, handing the jars out to various Gladers. The Greenie decided to avoid partaking until she was more comfortable around the others and in the Glade.
Tired of standing, the new girl decides to sit and lean against a log, a few feet away from the fire. She rubbed her temples gently, noticing suddenly that her headache had finally subsided.
Newt was right. Eating really did help my headache.
She sat there for another minute, thinking through the events of the day. The ride up in the box and hitting her head against the floor seemed so far away.
Taryn.
She sat up a little straighter, startled. Was that her name?
Taryn.
It sounded familiar in her head, weirdly like greeting an old friend or finding something important you had lost long ago. Taryn smiled to herself. She finally had a piece of herself, and that was her name.
Taryn shivered and realized that it was getting colder as the sun was going down. She stood from her place beside the log and moved to a log that was much closer to the bonfire. She leaned against the closer log and stretched her legs out in front of her.
“Hey!” Taryn snaps her head up to see Newt approaching her, just as she makes eye contact with a boy who was staring at her from across the fire, munching on something on a stick.
“Hey,” She grins with a smile. Newt plops himself down next to her, taking a long drag from Gally’s drink.
“How are you enjoying yourself, guest of honor?” Taryn smiled at the way he said “honor.”
“I’m good. I had to get closer to the fire because I was getting cold,” Newt nodded in acknowledgement, taking another drink.
“Have you gotten yourself anything to eat or drink?” He asked.
“No, not yet. I don’t know what exactly is in that drink, and I’m not sure I’m ready to find out.” She laughed a little. Newt liked the sound of her laugh.
“Yeah,” He replied. “I can’t quite say I blame you.”
The pair was quiet for a minute or two.
“Taryn, by the way.”
“S’cuse me?”
“Taryn. My name. It’s Taryn. I remembered.”
“Taryn,” Newt said, testing out the name. “I like it. Suits you quite well.”
“How’s that?” She asked. Newt muttered something she didn’t quite understand. “What was that?”
“S’pretty. Like you.” He repeated, still quiet. Taryn grinned to herself a little.
“Well, thank you Newt.” She said.
Just as Newt was about to respond, Chuck walked by, taking a long drag from Gally’s drink.
“Hey!” Taryn called out, catching up to Chuck within a few strides. “Gimme that!” She took the drink from Chuck and held it out of his reach.
“No faaaiirrrr!” Chuck whined.
“No fair?! You’re just a kid! No adult drinks for you,” He pouted and stomped off, presumably to watch the fights that were going on at the sandpit.
Taryn returned to her spot beside Newt and took a drink from the confiscated liquor.
“Euch,” She said upon swallowing. “How can you guys drink this stuff?”
“Puts some hair on your chest,” Was Newt’s response.
“Mhm.”
Newt stood abruptly, finished the rest of the drink by throwing it back, and stalked off in the direction of the cook and the pot.
Taryn sat by herself for the duration Newt was gone, just observing the other Gladers. Hearing the noises of an evening in the Glade.
“You hear that?” She jumped a little, not realizing Newt had returned.
“Yeah, what is that? It sounds like stone scraping.”
“It is. That’s the maze, changin’ and movin’.” “The maze? What maze?” Newt just smiled and rested his arm behind her, on the log.
“Yeah. Out there, beyond those doors is a giant maze.” He took another drink.
“Wow.” There was not much for Taryn to say beyond just wow. She truly was wowed by the power of this place.
“Taryn,” He says, looking away from her.
“Yeah?”
“Just testing out the name. Like I said before, it’s quite beautiful. Like you.” He said the last part very quietly, but enough for Taryn to hear. She raised her hand, the sudden movement causing Newt to look at her.
Their faces were close.
She gently brushed the hair from his eyes, so gently that Newt closed his eyes and leaned into it. She ran her fingers through his bangs one more time until she was sure they were out of his line of vision, when Chuck appeared behind Newt.
Taryn and Newt both moved back and turned their attention to Chuck, a flush creeping up on both their cheeks.
“Whatcha doin’?” He asked, plopping himself down in front of Newt.
“N-nothin, Chuckie boy. Just talkin’.” Newt finished his jar of drink and set it down, raising a hand to rub his eye.
“Tired?” Taryn asked, eyeing Newt.
He nodded.
“Want me to help you back to the Homestead?” He giggled in response.
“I-I don’t need help!” He proclaimed. He stood successfully, but was swaying slightly.
“Chuck, walk behind us to make sure he stays upright.” He saluted Taryn and did as she asked. She wrapped an arm around Newt’s shoulders to help guide him in the right direction.
“Come on, sweets, let’s get you upstairs.” A goofy grin crossed Newt’s lips but he remained quiet for the entire walk.
Chuck followed behind them until they made it into Newt’s room, which was impeccably clean.
“I got it from here, Chuck. Thanks for your help, for everything you’ve done for me today.” Taryn faced the younger boy as Newt sat on his bed, head hanging in exhaustion.
“Anytime! I’m so glad not to be the Greenbean anymore,” He said, puffing his chest out.
“Whatever you say. Can you make it back to your hammock okay?” She asked.
“You know it. See ya tomorrow!” Chuck made his way back downstairs and out into the Glade.
Just as Taryn turned back to Newt, he was curled up on his side, shoes on and everything.
She huffed and began undoing his shoes, before pulling back his covers.
Newt stirred slightly and slowly eased himself under the blankets.
“Thank you, Taryn.” He muttered sleepily, a smile crossing his lips.
“Anytime, Newt. Thanks for everything you did today.” She brushed his bangs out of his eyes again and made her way to the door, and to her room that was next door to Newts.
She took off her own shoes, curled up in her bed the exact same way Newt had, and dreamed of their future in the Glade together for the rest of the night.
