while i find a lot of criticism of booktok and "booktok books" to be valid, a lot of it seems......very reminiscent of the anti-twilight stuff in the early 2010s. like specifically the parts that were like "TWILIGHT IS THE DEATH OF FEMINISM AND LITERACY" and "VAMPIRES AND BOOKS ARE RUINED FOREVER" and "THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO LIKE TWILIGHT ARE DUMB TEENAGE GIRLS WHO ARE DUMB AND DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER" rather than like. actual critiques of the books. and even some of the more valid claims would sort of position themselves as if teenage girls reading twilight can't tell fiction from reality. like i'm not saying you can't or shouldn't criticize popular books (i certainly have), or saying that it's not fun to rag on a book you hate (it sure as hell is). but treating a book you don't like getting popular (esp with teenagers) as the end of literacy and the publishing industry and good writing is just plain absurd.
like i'm not saying all these books are secretly masterpieces, or even that they're all good. i've read some shit booktok books, just like i read some shit YA books back in 2012. but weirdly, the world did not come to an end and good books are still getting published. many of those books provided me with genuine entertainment, solace, and community, even if in hindsight they weren't the best, and i don't think it's fair, kind, or logical to treat people like they're stupid for enjoying books like this. (not to mention, how many people really got into reading because of Generic YA Fantasy #45 or Fun Mindless Romance #207 or Pulply Trashy Sci-Fi #62? maybe they'll branch out into other types of literature, maybe not. but it's still good that they're reading.)
and, frankly, learning to recognize and critique genuinely problematic tropes and elements in these books has made me a better writer and more attentive and educated reader. sometimes being able to articulate why something is bad is important, and sometimes that requires actually reading the damn book. and i would say that goes double for books you enjoy but contain iffy elements - it's a lot easier to completely dismiss a book that's nothing but 500 red flags in a trenchcoat, but if you're in a place of "wow this book really spoke to me in x, y, z way and i really enjoyed it BUT a, b, c were really poorly handled," it gets trickier.
TL;DR: no, barnes and noble having a booktok table is not going to kill literature as we know it, and no, people enjoying a book you find overhyped and cringe doesn't mean they're all mindless sheep who can't enjoy True Literature. calm the fuck down.

Btw do you think lando got a chance for wdc without a miracle of McLaren building a car with the rb19 level of dominance. Or do you think he's gonna become part of the next silent generation between max-charles(hello lewis?) / ollie-kimi. Because I barely can see him winning even if Max retires tomorrow. And I'm fully aware and admit that he's talented a lot and performing strong. But something about him gives me the impression that he's never gonna actually did it.
Oof what a minefield of a question.
Lando is a talented driver, sometimes I think he is a tad overhyped but that's more down to the britishness of it all. However, I don't think he's likely to ever win a WDC, and it's for the same two reasons I think George won't either–they're in the wrong teams at the wrong time, and the right teams already have indisputably generational racing drivers to build around (Red Bull with Max and Ferrari with Charles).
We've had a killer of a Max Verstappen domination era, and the wind is starting to blow in the direction of a future Charles Leclerc domination era like we've seen with Max and Lewis previously–Ferrari getting good, Charles embracing the insane. I see a lot of people speculating about when George and Lando are going to win their WDCs, when I think the most likely timeline is after our 4-5 years of Max winning everything, we have 4-5 years of Charles winning everything.
I also don't think Lando really has the mentality for a WDC fight currently, he's talked openly and honestly about mentality being an issue when fighting for a win. That's why I maintain that even though Lando and Oscar are evenly matched, if McLaren were a dominant team I think Oscar would clinch the WDC because Lando would psych himself out.
TLDR: I see the next few world champions being something along the lines of Max->Charles->Next Gen (someone not on the grid yet). Oscar could maybe, MAYBE pull a championship between Charles and Next Gen, but I'm much more willing to bet on him than Lando.

Nerdy, sweet, music journo Matty is the actual dream 😍 How about girlie having to interview some notoriously hot singer and Matty feeling insecure about it since they're only just together 😔
oh he is SO flustered - frowns every time the interview is brought up, mutters "it's not THAT good" when someone in the office praises the singer's new album, and is generally just pretty grumpy about the whole thing. and as much as he's cute when he's grumpy, you love like your smiley boyf the most, so you drag him to your designated meeting spot (the stationery cupboard) the morning of the interview like "matty what on EARTH is going on? i'm worried about you. are you alright? you've been so down and i can't stand it :((", and matty just spills his guts about how hot this guy is and how hot you are and how he'll fancy you and how he's just so much cooler and more accomplished than matty which sucks because he likes you SO much and doesn't want to lose you to "an overhyped shit with stupid hair". you're like "i agree he does have shit hair. yours is much better. defo the hair i'd rather play with while watching a film together in my flat with a brew", and matty's like wait what - you kiss him and giggle like "i'd take you over him any day. honest", and matty blinks like "really?", and when you nod he smiles like "can i kiss you now? s'my favourite way to thank you. and appreciate you". of course, you agree, and then after a lovely little smooch you whisper "i think you should do my neck next. let him know i'm spoken for, perhaps?"; needless to say, matty likes that idea, and you turn up at the interview only slightly dazed an hour later with a nice little heart shaped mark under your jaw (and you leave one on matty.... somewhere, when you get back to his place after work. it's only fair!) <3

I found this really cute kiribaku animatic but it’s unavailable in my region now! I clicked it and it directed me to your YouTube page, which is weird. Did you ever perhaps make an animatic with the song “Pulang”?
Yes, that was me!!!
Tumblr media
Unfortunately the video was taken down/restricted because
The music was copyrighted (which is kind of fair, but even with copyright, they'd usually just take all the revenue, maybe restrict the video from SOME countries, but still leave it up! 😧)
Here are some of those copyright instances where theyre still fully public OR restricted from a handful of countries:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so... I think the main reason it got taken down ENTIRELY was because the band is actually homophobic 💀 Don't take my word for it though! I'm just making an educated guess, considering Malaysians are generally super homophobic, especially... men. And this band is a very... man band. 💔 And though my other videos contain LGBT themes, this is the one video that was sniped completely ☹️ so yeah, erm...
I was upset about it at first but after thinking "their music ain't even that good lol they're just overhyped by the popular kids in school" i just let it go. People who take down my videos just because said videos are a bit on the gay side are not worth the time of day.
Have your heterosexual revenue. Have your heterosexual viewers. I do not want them. 😤😤😤

I love WoF!! I love Darkstalker!! I love the dragonet characters such as Mink and Cliff amd Peacemaker!!
I see a lot of hate on this book series and while I do acknowledge that there are flaws, it's really mostly a great concept of a world with interesting characters and fascinating lore. I don't think it got bad after book 10. I don't think the DoD are overhyped. I don't think the plot devices are lazy.
When I say that I love Darkstalker, I do not mean to excuse his crimes. I think his motivation is honestly about 60% being born pure evil, and I'm okay with that. He's a great villain who serves to drive the plot forward on many levels, and I loved his book. I acknowledge that he is a genocidal maniac and a borderline pedophile and a horrible dragon, but that doesn't make him uninteresting! I see a lot of Darkstalker hate simply because he did bad things or was written poorly at times. I personally thing Tui did a pretty good job writing him, and the books he was in were very enjoyable.
There's a lot of content out there hating on the children of WoF purely for existing. Mink is fun and naive and would make a fantastic MC because of her connection to Queen Snowfall and Queen Glacier. Cliff is adorable and brave and is a vital part of Queen Ruby's story. Dusky is traumatized and heroic and would give us a great insight into the Leaf/Silk Kingdom. Auklet will be Queen of the Seawings one day. Bumblebee would make a great sidekick to a main character - I can see her being funny and loyal. And Peacemaker. Oh, Peacemaker. Darkstalker's demise, in my opinion, was well written and has a good conclusion. Peacemaker is not annoying. He is not stupid or a cop-out. He is a child. And the child that Hope deserves. Peacemaker has room to be a really interesting character! Maybe he has visions of the old Nightwing kingdom falling. Maybe he has memories of massive black wings and moving things with his mind. Maybe he's what the Nightwings need to fully accept the Rainwings as their equals. I personally think he should grow up to be a royal advisor. Imagine, if you will, a dragon who was once Darkstalker, actually having power in a throne room. Imagine how much he would hate being a hybrid. Imagine how interesting it would be to see a mostly grown-up Peacemaker having visions of Darkstalker hating his life. In any case, he's exciting, and seeing people hate on him for not being Darkstalker and not being nothing just makes me sad.

Placing your little bear ears back on your head after your lunch break, you fluff some of the ready-to-purchase bears on the shelves to the right side of the store. You're completely absorbed in your busywork when you feel a gentle tug on your pastel apron.
Looking down to your left, you're met with the sight of a tiny girl; her eyes big and round staring up at you happily. You figure she can't be more than five, if that.
"Hi!" You greet with a smile, watching as the little girl blinks back at you innocently. "And who do we have here?"
"Ji-Ah!" She announces happily, a grin spreading across her face.
You giggle, but a bit of concern for the lone child is brewing in your chest. "It's lovely to meet you, Ji-Ah-sshi! Are your parents here with you today?"
Ji-Ah shakes her head. "Jiwoong Oppa!"
"Ji-Ahya!" You hear a male voice call suddenly as the door to your shop flies open.
"Oh good, here's your--," you start to say, but your voice trails off when you're suddenly face-to-face with the most strikingly gorgeous man you've ever seen in your life. Your lips part slightly in shock, wide-eyed as you stare back at him. "... Oppa."
As the incredibly handsome man approaches, you can see the worry in his eyes. He picks up Ji-Ah quickly and throws her over his hip. "What did I tell you about leaving my side, huh? You could get lost or hurt, Ji-Ah. Then what would I do?"
Turning his head finally, his eyes meet yours and you're embarrassed to admit that you're a bit breathless. Mentally scolding yourself, you ground your feet back in reality. "Hi, how are you?"
He nods, grimacing awkwardly at you. "I'm sorry if she bothered you. She can be kind of slippery."
"Not at all," you reply, shaking your head. "My name is (Y/N). What brings you both to Bear's Life today?"
"Oh, last week it was little Ji-Ah's birthday," the man explains as his sister smiles at you. "Unfortunately, I was working. I'm actually working today, too, but I was lucky enough to get some time off to spend with my baby sister."
You smile as Ji-Ah bites her thumb shyly; her face as perfect as a doll's as her brother sets her back down on the floor. "Well, I'm glad you could make it! So, we'll be opting in for the full experience?"
The man named Jiwoong's lips part as he prepares to protest, but Ji-Ah cuts him off before he can get a word out.
"Yes, yes, yes! Can I?" She begs, jumping up and down excitedly.
Jiwoong sighs, smiling to cover up his opposition. "Ji-Ah, I don't have that much time. We were just going to pick out a bear that's already been made. I thought you wanted to get ice cream, too?"
Ji-Ah shakes her head rapidly. "No, I want to make my bear with (Y/N)-sshi!"
"Don't worry, Ji-Ah-sshi," you say with a smile. "I know the perfect method that your brother could never say no to!"
"You do?" Jiwoong asks nervously.
"Repeat after me, okay?" You prompt as Ji-Ah nods enthusiastically. Slipping into the cutest voice you can muster, you clasp your hands together below your chin and look up at Jiwoong with puppy-dog eyes. "Can I please make my bear today?"
Jiwoong stares back at you with his eyebrows raised-- mouth slightly ajar in shock.
Ji-Ah mimics your actions, clasping her hands together and begging, "Can I please make my bear today?"
"Pretty, pretty please," you demonstrate again, putting your chin in your hands so your cheeks squish up.
"Pretty, pretty please," Ji-Ah follows, squishing her little round cheeks up in her palms. You watch as a reluctant smile begins to form on her older brother's face.
You tap one finger to your cheek cutely as you add your next line. "With a cherry on top!"
"With a cherry on top!" Ji-Ah says, touching her tiny index finger to her cheek and sticking out her lips in her own improvised pout. Jiwoong laughs, shaking his head in amazement.
"Please, Oppa?" You finish your pleading, smiling up at Jiwoong sweetly. He swallows nervously, a quick flash of panic in his eyes as you look away quickly out of embarrassment.
"Please, Oppa?" Ji-Ah repeats, her smile lethally infectious as Jiwoong places a hand over his heart. He holds up his other hand in surrender.
"Okay, fine!" He relents, sighing in defeat while grinning. "I'm too weak; I can't take any more! You've got me: we're making the bear."
~
"Now that our new bear friend is stuffed full of fluff... we need to stuff him full of love, too!" You say, holding the cream-colored teddy bear that Ji-Ah had picked out and helped to fill with cotton. You reach into the large heart-shaped box next to the stuffing machine and pull out an assortment of small, plushy fabric hearts. Each has a different design, color and texture so that the customer can choose the one they like most for their bear friend.
“(Y/N)-sshi? I want Jiwoong Oppa to pick the heart!” Ji-Ah demands cutely, looking up at her brother expectantly.
He blinks at you hesitantly before nodding in agreement. "Okay, I guess I can do that."
You hold out the fabric hearts to the young man which are splayed delicately across your palms for him to choose. He looks at them for a second before looking back up at you, entirely overwhelmed by the task he’s been given as his eyes silently scream ‘help me’.
A small smile creeping onto your face, you use your thumb to indicate which heart Ji-Ah would like most. As you tap the heart quickly, Jiwoong exhales in relief and picks up the little plush heart between his thumb and index finger.
"Let's see which one he picked!" You say, prompting Jiwoong to reveal the fabric heart in his palm.
Ji-Ah squeals happily. "That's the one I wanted! How did you know, Oppa!?"
Her brother smiles at you gratefully. "I just did!"
"Our heart will bring our bear friend to life, but we have to say our magic phrase for it to work," you explain. "Can you both hold our bear's heart and repeat the magic words?"
Jiwoong squats down so that he's on his sister's level, holding out the fabric heart for her to grab onto.
"I wish, I wish..." You begin, nodding at them encouragingly as they echo each phrase of the poem after you.
~I wish, I wish... on this true heart... that one bear's life... with this, will start!~
"And now we'll place our heart inside our bear friend," you instruct, holding out the teddy bear for Jiwoong and Ji-Ah to place the heart inside the zippered opening. As you close the zipper, you press a button to the side of the stuffing machine secretively which triggers hundreds of fairly lights to light up throughout the store.
Ji-Ah's jaw drops in awe as she spins around and around to look at the magical display. Her brother smiles at you appreciatively.
"That was incredible you guys! Your spell was the best I've ever seen," you praise, handing the teddy bear to a very happy Ji-Ah. "Do you come from a magical family?"
Jiwoong laughs. "Something like that."
Stepping over slightly to your counter, you pull out a blank Bear Birth Certificate and uncap your fancy fine-tip pen. "Now, what is our new bear friend's name?"
"Gomdori Oppa," Ji-Ah announces with a smile, hugging the bear tighter to her chest. "Then I can play with Jiwoong Oppa whenever I want and he won’t have to go away!"
Your breath hitches at the little girl's words as you glance up cautiously at her older brother. His eyes are wide as they meet yours; the handsome man's expression suddenly filled with shame. It's none of your business, but you can't help but wonder how important this man's work is that he's never around for his baby sister.
"That's--..." You fumble before quickly forcing a big grin for the little girl in front of you, writing the name down on the certificate. “That’s a wonderful idea! Then you can always have your big brother close to you.”
Ji-Ah smiles, bouncing on her toes happily. You glance up at her brother again to find him attempting to blink back tears. Whatever his reason for not being around more often, you can tell that it deeply pains him and that’s enough for you to want to try to make this a great memory for both of them to cherish.
“Well now that Gomdori Oppa is born,” you transition, giving the little bear a pat on the head, “he needs a bath before he’s ready to go out into the world! Do you want to go put our little bundle of joy in the bath for me?"
Ji-Ah nods, skipping over in utter bliss to the Bear Salon in the corner. You turn to her brother, who is still in the midst of composing himself.
"She really adores you, doesn't she?" You comfort, smiling at the man gently. "I think you bring her a lot of joy."
He nods, smiling sadly. "I'm just away so much. I wonder if that joy's enough, you know?"
"I can see how much you care about her," you reply, meeting his gaze now. "That's what they remember. Not the details... Just the love."
His smile fades, eyebrows raising as if the sentiment surprises him. He studies you for a moment before his eyebrows furrow with genuine appreciation. "Thank you."
"Oppaaaaa!" Ji-Ah whines from the Salon. "Gomdori Oppa needs his bath!"
"Okay, okay!" He concedes as you both laugh. As you turn to walk over to the Salon, Jiwoong stops in his tracks. You look back at him curiously to see he's staring at a shelf to his right. "What are those?"
You step back towards him, following the direction of his gaze. Your eyes light up when you recognize what he's looking at. "Oh! Those are voice boxes. You can record your own message and put it inside the bear."
"I know you said she'll only remember the love," Jiwoong grins at you, shrugging resignedly. "But it can't hurt, right?"
You're compelled to grin back, his entirely charming smile nearly knocking you off your feet. You breathe deeply as you will yourself to get a grip. "I guess it can't."
"That's what I thought," he replies, picking up one of the voice boxes and walking toward the opposite end of the store. "I'll be over there until you need me."
"(Y/N)-sshiiiiii!" Ji-Ah whines again, ripping you from your silly little daydream.
You run over to the little girl; your signature magical smile back on your face. "I'm here! Time to give Gomdori Oppa his first ever bubble bath."
Ji-Ah giggles, mesmerized as the bathtub fills with fake bubbles. You glance over at her brother, your heart warming as you catch him grinning into the voice recorder.
~
“Gomdori Oppa is all fresh and clean for his first day as a baby bear!” You announce, turning the bear around in his salon chair as Jiwoong rejoins you. He slips you the voice box behind your back to keep the surprise for Ji-Ah and you tuck it into your pocket nonchalantly.
“But… he’s missing something, isn’t he?” You ask, eyebrows raising in concern as you pretend to examine the bear you've picked up.
Ji-Ah blinks back at you wide-eyed, anticipation absolutely brimming over.
“Oh no!” You gasp, placing a hand over the bear’s front playfully. “He’s missing his clothes!”
Ji-Ah throws her head back, giggling furiously at your humorous performance. “Gomdori Oppa is naked!”
Jiwoong laughs too as he places a large hand over his sister’s eyes. “Don’t look! He’s shy.”
Another giggle fit ensues as Ji-Ah wraps her tiny hand around her brother’s— attempting to pry it off her to no avail.
“We need to pick out Gomdori Oppa’s first outfit,” you say, hopping over to the Shopping Mall as Ji-Ah grabs her brother’s sleeve and drags him behind you. “Since our baby bear is modeled after Jiwoong Oppa, should we pick something for him that your brother would wear?”
You squat down to the little girl’s level as both you and Ji-Ah look up at Jiwoong to assess his sense of style. You turn to each other, eyes narrowing with judgment as you look back at her older brother.
“What?” Jiwoong asks with a frown. “What’s wrong with what I’m wearing?”
You pout as you consider how to answer. “It’s a bit…”
“Boring!” Ji-Ah interjects suddenly.
Jiwoong’s eyebrows raise in offense.
“I was going to say ‘classic’,” you add.
Jiwoong sighs. “That’s just the polite way to say boring. Well if you dislike the source inspiration so much, why don't you just skip the clothes?"
“The clothes are the best part, Oppa,” Ji-Ah says, shooting him a sassy glare. “Duh.”
Jiwoong meets your gaze, shaking his head playfully in disbelief at his baby sister.
“Duh, Oppa,” you echo Ji-Ah, earning an unamused look from Jiwoong that endearingly resembles his sister’s to a tee. “The clothes are the best part.”
The little girl points up to a garment on the wall and you follow her line of site to a voluminous princess gown. "That's perfect!"
“Ji-Ahya!” Jiwoong scolds. “Didn’t you say this bear is supposed to be like me?”
Ji-Ah looks at her brother for a moment before grinning. “He is like you!”
Jiwoong glances at you, a sheepish smile spreading across his face. “I don’t wear princess dresses, Ji-Ah.”
“Mm,” Ji-Ah considers for a moment. “I guess he’s more like a cooler version of you.”
“Would I really be cooler if I wore princess dresses?” Jiwoong asks doubtfully as you fill out more of the bear's birth certificate.
“To a five-year-old, yes,” you answer his rhetorical question, not thinking as you follow it with, "You're so handsome though, I wouldn't be surprised if you could pull it off.”
He smiles at you amusedly as your cheeks heat up in embarrassment. "Oh yeah? I'll tell my stylist to sprinkle in some more ballgowns then, if the cute Bear's Life employee thinks I can pull it off."
You suddenly bite your lip to keep your jaw from falling open. "Cute?"
"Oh, uh," Jiwoong stammers, clearly unaware that he'd let the word slip. He laughs awkwardly as he walks back over to the wall of the Shopping Mall and picks Ji-Ah up, situating her on his hip so she can look at the clothes better. "You're sure about the princess gown for Gomdori Oppa? What about these little overalls, huh? Or this Hawaiian shirt?"
You watch as Ji-Ah shakes her head firmly at every option her brother poses, a smile forming on your lips. You had to admit he was incredibly cute with her. Then, something dawns on you: Jiwoong said he had a stylist. Of course, he had been joking around, but was that part a joke too? Could he be someone famous? He certainly has the face to be an actor or an idol. More importantly:
Was this the reason he didn't visit home much?
"Gomdori Oppa wants a princess dress," Ji-Ah says and her tone indicates that the decision is final.
Jiwoong sighs. "Alright, alright. Gomdori Oppa will be the most beautiful princess in all the land... per the Queen's orders."
"Well now that Princess Gomdori Oppa has decided he wants to wear the most beautiful gown that he can get his hands on... there's only one question left!" You make your way up to them, Ji-Ah giggling at the regal voice that her brother just put on. "Is that dress pink or blue?"
~
"Here is Gomdori Oppa's birth certificate," you say, handing the thick piece of paper over to Jiwoong. "These are his official records, so hold onto them tightly or he won't be allowed to vote in the Bear Elections or collect his Bear Pension!"
Jiwoong snorts, looking up at the ceiling and whistling when you narrow your eyes at him; though the grin that he keeps having to suppress makes it hard for him to produce any sound.
"And here is Gomdori Oppa," you present, handing the fluffy brown bear adorned in a pink ballgown and tiara to Ji-Ah. "Maybe you can give him a big squeeze?"
Ji-Ah smiles, squeezing the bear tightly to her. Her eyes light up as a voice sounds from the bear:
Ji-Ahya! Are you being a good girl for Eomma? Are you going to bed early and eating well? Jiwoong Oppa will be home before you know it. And in the mean time... Gomdori Oppa loves you very much, Ji-Ah.
"Oppaaa!" Ji-Ah cries, a little pout on her lips as her eyes water. "I love you!"
You would be lying if you said a little lump doesn't form in your throat as Jiwoong places one large hand on the top of his sister's head and ruffles up her hair affectionately.
"I'm so glad you came into Bear's Life today," you say, grinning at Ji-Ah as she sniffs back her tears almost as soon as they arrived. "I had a blast with you guys! Did you have fun, too?"
The little girl bounces up and down, handing her bear to her brother for a moment so she can wrap her arms around your waist in a hug. You giggle at the adorable little girl, patting her back gently before she pulls away.
Running behind your little counter area, you pull up the total on your cash register. "Okay, that'll be 145,000 won."
"Oh," Jiwoong remarks, eyebrows raise in surprise. "That's... that's quite an expensive bear we put together, Ji-Ah."
"Well, you're also paying for the experience... and your time with the worker..." You explain, smirking at the incredibly handsome man in front of you. "Did you enjoy your time with the worker?"
"Yes," Jiwoong answers a little too seductively before coughing to cover it up when he suddenly remembers where he is. After clearing his throat several times, he replies sheepishly, "Yes, I did-- we did, I mean."
"That's what I thought," you reply with a smug smile, taking the credit card he immediately holds out to you. Swiping it through your machine and handing it back to him, he places his card in his wallet and holds out his hand for Ji-Ah to take.
"Thank you, Oppa!" She squeals happily before turning and bowing to you. "Thank you, (Y/N)-sshi! I'll miss you!"
Your heart melts at the pout on Ji-Ah's face as she looks between you and her brother.
"Oh, uh," Jiwoong stutters as he tries to think of a solution. "Well, we'll come back again soon! How does that sound, Ji-Ah?"
"REALLY!?" Ji-Ah screams excitedly, eyes wide with surprise.
"Yes. We can come and get more... accessories," Jiwoong nods, smiling in resign. "... for the bear."
"Accessories... for the bear?" You repeat with a smirk.
"Yeah! I mean, you both agreed: the clothes are the best part," Jiwoong attempts to explain. "So Gomdori Oppa will want another outfit eventually."
"YAAAAAAAY!" Ji-Ah exclaims, clapping her hands together. "And then you can see (Y/N)-sshi!"
Jiwoong's eyebrows raise immediately. "So then I can see (Y/N)-sshi? Ji-Ah..."
"And then you can fall in looooove," Ji-Ah sing-songs teasingly. Impressed, you smile. Kids always know whats going on... even when we think they don't.
"Ji-Ahya, please--," Jiwoong starts, but you cut him off.
"Well, whenever Gomdori Oppa is ready for his new accessories," you say, meeting Jiwoong's gaze. "Let him know he's welcome any time."
Ji-Ah giggles as her brother swallows nervously, a blush tinting his cheeks as he smiles bashfully. Bear in one hand and Jiwoong's palm in the other, your tiny customer Ji-Ah pulls her brother towards the door.
Jiwoong's still stealing glances at you from over his shoulder, grinning at the way you're now biting your lip to keep from laughing. Ji-Ah turns around one more time, taking Gomdori Oppa's hand in her own and letting the little bear wave goodbye to you.
You wave back as they walk out of the doors hand-in-hand, smiling as you know you achieved your goal of making this visit a special memory for Ji-Ah and her brother.
You'd never have guessed that their visit would end up being a very special memory for you, too.

the character everyone gets wrong: Dan. she's not a badass. i mean she is, but she's not. she's a scared little girl who had to raise herself and has no idea what she's doing at any given time and i love her for it
why andrew would never top or bottom: actually he does both, and tends to enjoy it. kind of an agressive top but Neil likes it, and sometimes likes to follow orders when he bottoms 🫣 i think they do anything and everything with each other. Neil could be dominant or submissive at any given time, which gives Andrew space to learn about what he actually enjoys. He finds that as long as it involves Neil, he doesn't mind
worst tumblr take I've seen: that Andrew was a misogynist because he doesn't like being manipulated, and "manipulation is a woman's weapon" like how is THAT not misogynistic be so real
why did you block that annoying person?: kept saying that Kevin abused Riko as much as Riko abused Kevin. don't know how far they had to reach into the depths of their asshole to find that one, i just hope they didn't get stuck
i don't have discord
which ship fans are the most annoying: y'all are going to absolutely murder me for this but kevaaron. 1) where did it come from? 2) what's wrong with Katie?? 3) no hate ship what u want but also, i can ship what i want? and it's fine it's literally fine
what character did you start to hate because of fanon: i hate to say it but Thea. i adored her when I read the books originally, but after 4 years of exclusively fanon content i didn't like her. but i did a reread recently and adore her again so it's all good
common fandom opinion everyone is wrong about: Andrew being a sex god. Neil is his first consensual sexual partner. like yeah he knows how to suck dick like a dying man, which he learned in juvie (when he was 13-16?) but in terms of sex? he doesn't know what he's doing and he's probably really scared and nervous
worst part of canon: kevin and thea turning their daughter into a mini Raven 😔
worst part of fanon: Renee erasure 😔😔
fandom related words you've filtered: as of currently? anything tsc related because I don't have access to it yet and people aren't tagging properly. but I also have Rinee (rixo x renee) blocked because,,, what do you actually mean
unpopular character you like and why people should like them: Aaron. yeah he's an asshole and a little homophobic but he was raised that way and he's getting better
worst blorboification: if this means what i think it means, fucking riko. like wdym "he serves cunt" he needs to serve time
answered prev
answered prev
you can't understand why this is popular: kevaaron, any riko ship, riko himself, ichirou x neil, andreil breaking up in fics ?
there should be more of this: fic: oral fixation. sexual or non sexual idc but let's Freud these bitches. fanart: ANDREW WITH LONG HAIR PLS PLS PLS
it's criminal that y'all have been sleeping on: STUART HATFORD. LITERALLY NEXT TO WYMACK ON THE FATHER FIGURE SCALE. I LOVE HIM
you're mad/ashamed/horrified you actually kind of like: i don't feel guilt I'm Presbyterian
part of canon you found boring: anytime they were in class like wdym
part of canon you think is overhyped: this one is going to get me in trouble so i wanna start off by saying that yes, Riko was a victim of abuse. I'm not disputing that at all. but the part where he got beat by Tetsuji and "was more blood and bruise than skin", while being horrible, was also because of Kevin leaving due to Riko breaking his hand. Tetsuji lost one of his biggest investments because of Riko's petty ego
fav part of canon that everyone ignores: Stuart Hatford man
ship you've unwillingly come around to: Kandreil lol. i didn't like it at first but idk the more fanfic i see I'm like yeah that could be cute
topic that brings up the most rancid discourse: picture this, if you will: Nora Sakavic says something about her own damn characters. yeah that's all
common fandom complaint you're sick of hearing: "it's poorly written" it's not. if you can get over the first chapter of The Raven King, the rest is actually written very well and it's so so beautiful and depicts traumatized characters in a way I haven't seen before that is very refreshing
ty for the ask pinky ily

Dragons Rising Rant
I WAS NOT READY for season 2 part 1
(I'm spoiling pretty much everything below the cut)
This was everything I wanted and more (not to say it doesn't have its issues, but still)
I know some people were grumbling about Lloyd taking Zane's role of being the vision haver but I honestly like how they handled it. Because it feels an awful lot like a PTSD allegory. Like, Arin is literally like "you've been through a lot, maybe it's catching up to you" or smthn like that, the visions showing up at random and inconvenient times during the day, being unavoidable but they can be lived with, panic attacks, so am I the only one seeing this??? This does some interesting things to my Lloyd PTSD headcanons... another thing is the two people that have had visions are the two most likely people to have PTSD imo, so... there's that...
Lloyd verbally acknowledges having panic attacks which caught me so off guard for a show to sell toys to eight year old boys. It wasn't like puss and boots level of panic attacks, definitely not given that much focus, but it was there. Lloyd canonically has panic attacks!!
I know it's a kid's show, but I feel like they could have handled the sleep deprivation a bit better than "Lloyd is falling asleep all the time," like there's so many other ways you could convey that, at least vary it a bit. They hammer this point into the ground and I feel like kids aren't that dense, and would understand it even with half of the random falling asleep replaced with irritability, zoning out, or other stuff like that idk.
I WAS NOT READY for Kai to get sacrificed. When they were talking about human sacrifices I was like "nah ninjago would never go that far, that pretty much confirms that either the sacrifices aren't actually necessary or the forbidden five don't get brought back," then Kai literally gets sent to the backrooms with no way out.
And Bonzle. BONZLE. Need I say more? Wish she had gotten more focus though. The sorceress felt like a d&d oc shoved in last minute though, and her design was so chaotic it was distracting from the show for me. Probably just me though, I like order. She's fun, I just wish they'd either given her an arc or given that focus to Bonzle.
Internally screaming when Nya says "Jay would never forget me" and when Jay showed up. I really hope they give him enough time to shine.
Ras literally runs and catches up to a moving car and knocks out a dragon in a single hit. Bros insane. I guess the blood moon just makes him physically stronger? They didn't really elaborate what the blood moon does to Ras and why. But he's an actually competent villain, which Ninjago is in short supply of.
Cole literally said "Come at me (bro)" to the Administration.
Speaking of Cole, Geo misses him!! I'm way overhyped for this couple, but this is the closest thing we'll get to a canon gay couple in ninjago. Lego doesn't have the balls to actually show them kissing or being a couple, not with their show that gets aired all over the world to sell legos. I'm gonna go rewatch the land of lost things episode from s1 later.
The timeline is even more messed up now though. If Cole only just returned, when were the Mech Pilot shorts supposed to happen? We'll see what the creators say on Twitter lol.
Ending this off on a positive note, the found family is gonna kill me. Arin literally seeing Lloyd and Nya as his parents was gold. Oh man Ras slammed the poor boy around a lot, physically and mentally. Just let both Arin and Sora realize they're not useless. Nahhh the angst is too good.
Is there more? Probably. But I need to do my calculus coursework...

If it's okay, could we see how shikaku was with yoshino as his obsession pretty please ❤️
Well, my requests are closed at the moment, but I can give you some quick thoughts.
Warning: injury and blood descriptions (very vague)
His obsession wasn't as strong as Shikamaru's, but he still did some crazy shit of course.
For example, Yoshino heavily used swords when she was an active ninja, but Shikaku never used swords, but really, really wanted to spar with her.
He overhyped how good he was with swords, and invited her to a sword only fight, where she thoroughly trounced him and accidentally stabbed him pretty badly in the thigh. She thought he would be able to block the hit because he hyped himself up too much, so didn't hold back.
(Normally, Nara can't spar with their obsessions but Shikaku was so confident that he'd lose and be unable to even scratch Yoshino, that his instincts allowed it lol)
This idiot tried to convince her he was fine while he was bleeding out, and only agreed to go to the hospital if she came with him.
He spent the entire time intensely fixated on Yoshino seeing his bare thigh for the first time. Did she like it? Did he have good thighs? Maybe he should flex them a bit?
All the while he's literally covered in blood.
Embarrassingly, the mednin had to ask him to stop flexing his thigh.
...
Shikaku is funny because he always downplays how attached he is to Yoshino when he's around others. He's with Chouza and Inoichi, and he's like "it's fine, I'm fine, totally normal about her."
And Inoichi and Chouza just look at each other like, should someone tell him that he's had his eyes glued on the kitchen door for 7 whole minutes, waiting for Yoshino to come back through with the tea?
...
Shikaku also lives for being bossed around by his obsession.
Shikamaru definitely misunderstood their relationship when he was a kid and thought his mother was just nagging extraordinaire. He didn't get the joke of their relationship, where Shikaku actually loves it.
Because if his obsession tells him to do something, the chore automatically becomes 1000x easier because his instincts know he's pleasing his obsession which floods his brain with all sorts of nice chemicals.
Idk, that's all I have for now, but they're cute, these two.

What was Bi-Han's first thought when looking at Shang Tsung for the first time
(am I doing this right I'm still slightly drunk)
no no this is good.
He thought he was hot would be like his beloved arch enemy, and they'd spend all their lives fighting and flirting with each other in an intricate game of cat and mouse. No, but fr, Bi-Han lowkey has the most respect for Shang Tsung out of everyone else. Shang Tsung is his beloved enemy no joke.
After every fight, Bi-Han tells off his adversary and/or disparages them in some way. Even Johnny Cage, who for all his goofyness and bravado, actually did manage to get the upper hand and lay him out.
So when he gets to the Ying Fortress right off the bat, he says, "Finally, we face a worthy foe. Victory will bring us glory."
First up is Nitara, to whom he says, "I heard tales of battles against your kind. I had thought them tall ones." and it's not the words so much as the look he gives her that conveys what he really thinks of the Vaeternians/Nitara herself. They were probably overhyped. At the end of the fight, he just says, "You will end this day hungry." Not too bad, honestly. Just a dismissal with no insult attached. That's about the best anyone can hope for from him lmao.
Then, he almost pays Ermac a compliment by saying Liu Kang had warned them about Ermac and "I had hoped for the chance to battle your dark magic." Of course, he beats Ermac and then says, "You are not so fearsome." Again, not so bad as an insult. Another overhyped enemy, but it's whatever.
When he faces off against Quan Chi, he starts the fight by saying, "Were you told also to expect defeat?" Keeping his expectations low. And he was right because he wins and says, "Your failure was inevitable."
Tumblr media
Then he gets to Shang Tsung, who, much like Dr. Strange, has come to bargain. And Bi-Han wants all the smoke (no pun intended), so he's like, "Unless it's your surrender, I am not interested." (Translation: square up.)
And when he inevitably wins again, he says:
Tumblr media
And that's not really an insult. It's similar to Ermac, as it shows he at least had slightly higher expectations for him than the rest. Maybe also because Shang Tsung beat Kuai Liang right before this. Now, earlier with Ermac, his expectations were already established before their fight, so he follows it up with a dismissal that basically amounts to "bitch you thought." Because before almost every fight, Bi-Han places his bets, and he always bets on himself.
Tumblr media
This isn't to say he thought Shang Tsung could actually beat him. But just to say that he usually already dismisses his opponents before fighting them (few exceptions) and then follows that up with a proclamation that he was right, cause his ops ain't shit. And while this implies Shang Tsung also didn't measure up to his expectations, at least he's not saying that directly to his face before the fight even begins. At least there's no insult added to injury at the end of the fight.
That's respect he isn't shown to give anyone else. In fact, he's usually as disrespectful as he can get away with to everyone, including Liu Kang himself. And Shang Tsung calling Bi-Han "Grandmaster" when literally no one else except Bi-Han himself uses the title in the whole storymode??? Yeah yeah he's a snake, a liar, and a manipulator, but if he's pretending, at least he's putting in an effort no one else does. Like, it's understandable that Kuai and Tomas don't use it because of their close familial bond, but you're going to tell me they didn't call their father Grandmaster? At least when they're in front of non-family as a sign of respect for his authority? The whole time in front of Shang Tsung and the others, it's "brother" and "Bi-Han." Put some respek on his title! And when they're in private, they can't stfu about their dead father either, which could further drive home the point that they don't respect Bi-Han's position.
But anyway, getting back on topic…the way Bi-Han goes in for the kill instead of capturing Shang Tsung like Liu Kang wanted? Bi-Han already feels like the Lin Kuei are being held back by Liu Kang. He's stifling them. Bi-Han himself is in unwanted servitude to Liu Kang. Shang Tsung would have been another captive for Liu Kang to lord over, and so Bi-Han was freeing him from that fate. You know his overdramatic ass would think this and try to pull a stunt like that.
When he said "Finally we face a worthy foe." Turns out he meant Shang Tsung exclusively. No one else lived up to his expectations even marginally. He showed no one else the small measure of respect Shang Tsung had garnered from him, and this was even before Shang buttered him up by playing the "Grandmaster" card.

Your post about dark urge dying twice is interesting and I agree that denying daddy bhaal at the temple and being resurrected right after is a let down. Anyways, playing a good Durge who never says anything mean/weird feels to me a lot like tav+ which is disappointing, not a lot of durge specific lines there to choose from. Best experience I have had with The Dark Urge is antihero, who chooses bhaal at the temple but does the right thing at the end and destroys the brain and kills themself, you get a nice chat with Withers after game and it feels a way better than what a happened at the temple, while still not being as good as it could be. Let's all hope that Larian fixes act3 eventually <3
See, that's the thing that really annoys me.
The Dark Urge to me is just far more interesting than Tav, who is by design, a blank slate so that you can make them who you want them to be.
And I get that's the fun of DND and BG3.
I just wish they had bothered to give this ORIGIN CHARACTER any of the same amount of depth for the other origins.
Which is not to say that they really have as much depth as they should, Astarion aside, but let's not get into that.
It's just odd to me that the Dark Urge really only has three extra scenes, and everything else is just edgy lines and biting off a toe or an arm here and there.
The pre-amnesia dark urge is FASCINATING to me, but we barely see anything from them.
That's why I was so obsessed with the Prayer of Forgiveness. It's an inkling that there was something to the Dark Urge more than just slaughter, and there's only ONE line in it that does so.
I KNOW I know it's an RPG and it's not trying to tell a story, so much as letting you tell yours.
I just personally find the Dark Urge way more interesting than the Tavs i see out there, and YES, I'm SORRY.
not all of yours OCs are going to be intensely interesting to me.
But the Dark Urge as an origin?
I find them interesting.
I like edgy characters who choose to let their edginess go, and begin the journey of becoming more open and human.
And I simply don't CARE for oh here's someone's hero OC who is a hero, and fucks all these hot people.
You can play the game that way, I don't care. I just personally...wish BG3 had given the Dark Urge specifically more depth.
The Tavs can be boring if they want.
Just, the Dark Urge should not be available as an Origin, if they weren't going to actually give them a well developed and open origin.
You can keep it a secret up until the end, but even when you find out you're bhaalspawn...you're just bhaalspawn.
and nothing else. nothing about your past beside a hasty line or two about it.
plus once you kill orin, it ceases to matter. there is no impact on the story if you choose to be a good dark urge. you are essentially just a tav.
the dark urge also was overhyped for what it was. Everyone is out here saying they're scared to try the dark urge because they might kill their companions - that's a joke.
You have to option to do so ONCE and your entire camp kills you, giving you an immediate game over.
Plus, save scumming.
It's really not that hard.
The Dark Urge really should be a harder option. They should have to wisdom roll for more choices, forced to ACTUALLY grapple with the desire to torture, maim, and kill.
Then your sacrifice would mean even more in the end, because you are tired of hurting people you don't want to hurt.
But alas.
I need to just be happy with what I have, so.
I'm done complaining, I'll go back to talking about burying my face in Gortash's tits again...

Nitpick for today! I know I skipped yesterday, but I'm pretending I didn't.
Anyway, so the nitpick I have is that Pyrrha is meant to be the single best fighter in her year, so super special, totally better than the rest, etcetera etcetera. In the first few seasons they did a very good job with making it clear how much better Pyrrha was than Jaune and we can even be like "yeah she's clearly the best on her team," (Nora is a freaking powerhouse but not as quick or as technically proficient as her other teammates imo and Ren is good but subdued and seems less physically strong than Pyrrha.) But the problem for me is that when you stack Pyrrha against Team RWBY... She doesn't seem all that different in skill level. This is probably just because Team RWBY is the title team and in the first three seasons there was a lot of work done on their fighting styles specifically, whereas Pyrrha was generally treated as existing for Jaune for the majority of her existence so even though some thought definitely went into her fighting style, it would make sense that the main girls would be better.
But like
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not saying they could definitively beat Pyrrha, but the fight would be great because... There's no reason for me to believe that Pyrrha could just beat them point blank without the use of her semblance. Hypothetically somebody could say "well Pyrrha would beat them if she was going all out because she can just control their weapons," but that doesn't matter because nobody but possibly Oz and the rest of the inner circle know about that anyway. Pyrrha keeps her semblance a secret, so why would people act like she's point blank period the best fighter when she isn't actually animated to fight better than lots of other people?
Like I said, it makes sense through a Doylist perspective why the main girls (and Sun tbh) are animated to fight so well that it looks that at the very least they're on the same level as Pyrrha (with specifically Weiss and Ruby potentially outstripping her.) But Watsonian, it kind of feels like people got so fixated on Pyrrha's status of being the best from her old combat school that they kind of just... pretended she still was? Again, I know Pyrrha's semblance is like this OP trump card for people, but nobody knows about it. It's actually really funny to imagine Pyrrha being the person who doesn't overhype herself. Like, Weiss is talking to Pyrrha and calls her the best combatant in their school and Pyrrha is like "I don't know about that, Weiss, I think you might be better at fighting than I am," and she's like "...Pyrrha, you're so humble." XD

HEY FRIEND! Number 1 and 21 for the Violence Ask!
1. the character everyone gets wrong
Tumblr media
I think a lot of people get Saengtai wrong. When La Pluie was airing, a remember seeing a small exodus of viewers who didn't like how upset and angry Patts got during episode 10. I don't think when we talk about how good or bad Patts is that we acknowledge how much of their predicament is Saengtai's fault. Look at him! He bit that man!!
Saengtai is self-centered and moody. He's persnickety and incorrigible. He punishes everyone around him for things that are well beyond his ken. I think this show is excellent and I really love these characters. I just think in the rush to side with the protagonist many of us forgot to ask if the protagonist was a reliable narrator.
21. part of canon you think is overhyped
I don't really get that worked up about positions when it comes to what we see in the shows. I'm gay, so I tend to make up my own mind about how I think the guys would actually have sex.
Thanks for the ask!

talk about Collector
WHYYYYYYYYYY okay now that I got that off my chest let's get serious LMAO
Before I dive in too deep, to any other ppl reading, THIS IS YOUR FAIR WARNING IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ ANY CRITICISM OF TOH. Something that is really apparent in this fandom particularly is that a lot of ppl refuse to allow and accept genuine criticism discussions, dumbing it down to personal biases, misinterpretations of the text (or in this case, the show), and proclaiming "It's intentional that the show did that!" every time someone breathes something negative about it. This is ESPECIALLY annoying with the "Blame Disney/the shortening" nonsense -- a key skill in television writing is to be capable of working with the allotted time that the studios give you. After they were told Season 3 got cut short, they still had 11 22-minute episodes of Season 2 and all three 40+ minute episodes of Season 3 to conclude the story in a satisfying way.
Seeking and reading criticism posts outside of the general tags, ignoring warnings on posts that give forewarnings, then getting mad and upset that someone criticized your comfort show is generally an unhealthy behavior, especially if you're not in a good mental state. If you can't take people criticizing something you enjoy, and more-so if you deem it your comfort media, and feel the need to bother them because you made yourself upset reading their posts, you've got a lot of soul searching to do. That, or maybe you should log off until you can handle it.
Also, obviously, spoilers ahead for TOH, as well as Amphibia because these shows parallel a lot more than I want them to. :')
---
I have a LOT to say about The Owl House from a critical and writing perspective, and I feel like the show is EXTREMELY overhyped for what it actually is. I feel its sister show Amphibia executed much of the same/similar themes better, and that's not even a bias thing. Just from the way both shows are written, you can tell which one feels more competently structured from a narrative standpoint (and, let's be honest, which one is actually funny).
Okay enough about general opinion, let's get to Collector. From a character design perspective, GOD I love this little guy, both the reflection/shadow form and the actual form are distinct from the rest of the cast. I'm a big Sun and Moon design/symbolism enjoyer (Sun and Moon from FNAF, Sun and Blake from RWBY, Celestia and Luna from MLP:FiM, etc.) so these types of characters are always welcome. And while their voice annoys me personally it ABSOLUTELY fits them, so no matter how annoying I find it I don't think I'd want them to have any other voice.
But that, unfortunately, is the only props I can give to Collector.
The show is FULL of redeemed antagonists that range from okay (I'd like to think Amity was decent enough and Hunter was alright but definitely should have been introduced earlier so his redemption was a slow burn but this post isn't about them so I'll end this note here) to "what the actual fuck" (Idc what anyone says, there is no excuses PERIOD, Lilith's redemption was the absolute worst redemption arc I think I've ever seen AND I'VE SEEN CATRA'S), and Collector is very much on the lower end of that scale. We hardly see them overall and their character writing is rushed beyond belief -- and again, I'd like to reiterate that that is ENTIRELY on the writing team for the show. Disney and the shortening DID NOT DECIDE TO KEEP COLLECTOR IN. The writing staff were aware of the time they had left and made the decision to shoehorn them in and expect everyone to just be okay with it.
From a writing perspective, they bloat the story exponentially and 100% should have been left in the drafts or saved for future content like what Dana said she might do if she is able to through books and such. If we only get hints of the other Collectors, this one should have STAYED hints with them.
We have essentially no significant amount of time with them outside of Hollow Mind and the season 2 finale before season 3, and what we DO have of them in season 2B is so drastically different I'd consider 2B Collector and 3 Collector as two different characters entirely. And before you tell me, "They're different because sun/moon symbolism!" "They're different because Belos and King influence them differently!" etc. etc., don't waste your time. Yes, those are good explanations as to why they feel so different between seasons, but that does not make the writing of the character inherently good. Allow me to elaborate:
In S2B, of what little we see of Collector, they are extremely sadistic in nature, and while they appear childish the writing of that lack of care for others is ABUNDANTLY CLEAR. And it seemed that way even as Belos first encountered him as Philip in the flashback episode. There, they weren't yet "influenced" by Belos and his plans; hell, he hardly had an actual plan yet.
Skip ahead to Hollow Mind, easily the best episode of Season 2 imo, and Collector is taunting Belos, mocking him and his schemes. Saying things like "Ooh, you were mad!" and "I'm starting to think you make those [grimwalkers] just to destroy them. You have fun with it, admit it!"
I cannot find any reasonable explanation as to how or why Belos would influence Collector into doing such things. Why would he want a little pain in the ass making fun of him for hundreds of years? And by his response to Collector's taunt about the grimwalkers and Hunter, "Of course I don't, Collector. It hurts every time he chooses to betray me," he took offense to their words, but kept his tone from shifting to anger as he does with everyone else because of Collector's power.
Belos doesn't want Collector thinking he doesn't like them because of their abilities, but he does want to stay on their good side for information. For knowledge of spells. And he puts up with Collector's annoyances because of that.
Essentially, that wasn't something Belos taught them or influenced them to do. All Collector knows is to adapt to their friends' behaviors, yes, but Belos is like, over 400 years old. I don't know about you, but I doubt with the way he speaks and how he's written that he would taunt his underlings in the same childish vain as Collector, and do so enough for Collector to pick up and mimic that behavior.
Now to the finale, their appearance is pretty much just them getting duped by Belos and sent into the depths of the titan skull, where King ever-so-conveniently finds them, making the pinky swear that releases them.
They maintain that mocking attitude even after Belos betrays them, calling King "boring" for calling them Mr. Collector and feeling generally disinterested by King before he promises a game to play. And even after they're released, they continue the attitude further with the whole "I remember someone throwing me off a bridge...I'm not angry, though!" bit, only to send Belos to his "death" moments after, deeming it as a game of tag. They've seen Belos kill grimwalkers first hand, fully aware that their lives mean nothing, and replicated the behavior by returning the favor to Belos (or so they thought). Their lack of care continues when they nearly try to do the same thing to the Hexsquad, people who didn't even do anything to them, before King stops them, changing the subject before they can cause further harm.
After stopping the draining spell, Collector continues the destructive maliciousness they have all the way to the end of the episode, and that's the impression of them we're left with. They were sadistic, uncaring and childish, but only learned the behavior of killing from Belos -- even though Belos didn't actually die, the intent was to kill him, and they were fully planning to continue with the Hexsquad.
And then...We get to Season 3.
Just a side-note, I think it's a safe assumption to say the first 2 seasons of The Owl House took place between roughly 2 months, as Luz was outside waiting to leave for a summer camp after the school year ended before initially arriving in the demon realm. Going off of that assumption, in Part 1 Luz returned to school as she returned to the human realm, presumably in late August/early September due to her living in Connecticut. And since Part 1 takes place in the timespan of about 3-7 days, the last day being Halloween, the timeskip only brought us about 2 more months ahead. Keep this in mind.
After Luz and co. return to the demon realm in Part 2 -- objectively the worst episode of the season -- we already see King's influence on Collector since they turned everyone into puppets instead of actively injuring or killing them when they don't comply. Still bad? Yes. But from how it looks in Part 3 with the Hexsquad, it seems more like the puppets' consciences are just comatose or an alternative to sleeping, maybe in a REM-like state. But of course, the show didn't have enough time to explain that further over all the nonsense in Part 2.
Anyway, when we see Collector in Part 2, they're still being childish, which is unfortunately the only thing that stays consistent with this character. They then say two lines that were the most god-awful writing decisions I've seen in a hot minute, and this show is STOCK FULL of really bad "this is peak humor LAUGH" moments like this.
They say that Eda has this "cool aunt vibe" and such, which sounds like one of those "character dynamics/tropes" posts on social media like Tumblr and whatnot. It comes off as really pretentious in the writing, and was shockingly unfunny to hear for a show that calls itself a comedy. Another line that frustrates me, more-so for lore reasons, is when they ask Odalia to make pizza bagels, when it was previously stated that human food is inaccessible to Luz during her time in the demon realm. So not only is it contradicting that whole thing (Eda actively struggled to find food for Luz that she could eat), how would they or King even know what one is or how to actually make one??
It seems like a small point to get heated over, but it once again feels like one of those stupid one-liners that one of the writers thought was the funniest shit they've ever thought up and kept it in because they knew die-hard fans would just laugh it off and brush it off as a joke, and that the writers forgetting about Eda's maternal struggle to feed her adopted kid is Disney's/the shortening's fault because they're at fault for everything wrong with the show...and not the ppl who wrote it.
Regardless, this whole shtick is extremely out-of-character for the way they had spoken in Season 2, and from what I can recall (I'm not gonna rewatch the entire show for the sake of a single post), King never talks like this. Luz does around him, but he himself doesn't talk like this.
I've discussed with friends before about this, including Robin (the one who asked me to talk about this), but from Part 2 onward Collector gets the same Luz-like writing every character that gets redeemed suddenly dawns out of the blue. I started calling it luz-ification, but it doesn't just happen to Collector.
It happened to Hunter, where his more cocky and ego-centric dialogues from early 2A was dropped for a more "comedic" personality and an anxiety-ridden character, though it's later eluded to that his cocky attitude was him masking his true self, so I try to keep it to that perspective.
But this happened to Lilith as well, where she suddenly started acting like "Cool Aunt Lilith" IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING HER ADMITTING TO CURSING EDA AND ALLOWING HER CAPTURE. WITH NO CONSEQUENCES TO BE FACED OTHER THAN THE CURSE SPLIT WHICH IS HARDLY UTILIZED IN THE SHOW.
(Side-tangent: Characters facing little to no consequences for their actions is something that goes on so much in this show but this is long enough already and I really don't like talking about this shit for long 'cause I could be using my time on better pieces of media, I'm sure there's plenty of posts explaining this point elsewhere by ppl who enjoyed TOH more than me)
Hell, it even happened to Amity for a hot minute. For some moments in the show she's written really off-character and saying things that just completely contradict how she's typically written, but then goes back to the more sassy and balanced character later on.
This post has gotten WAY longer than I wanted it to be, but to keep me from spending even more time on this, Part 2 shows a drastically different Collector, to the point that they do not by any means have the same character writing as they had before. They got luz-ified. Using social media lingo they couldn't even have access to in canon, and being written to quite literally just sound like a mini-me of Luz with the more obnoxious undertones of the childish thing.
Point is, they mimic these behaviors of Luz that they wouldn't even have reasonable access to learning from, because she's in the human realm for almost all the time after their release. It only makes sense in Part 3, when Luz is actually there for them to see her behaviors in action, but even that is so contrived and rushed that it feels unrealistic and narratively unnecessary. Remember what I said before about the timeskip only being 2 months? Yeah, 2 months isn't nearly enough time for a character to fundamentally change who they are as drastically as Collector.
Now to the part where I talk about Amphibia really quick and mention how it did the whole "having an alternative threat acting as a mini-boss" thing a million times better than this shit ever could. King Andrias, paralleling Collector for this particular scenario, is shown relatively early on that he's an antagonist to the audience. It's later revealed as a plot twist not to the audience, but to the characters, who least expected it. They don't waste time trying to throw off the audience with red herrings or telling its audience "He's not a bad guy, he's totally not going to be evil later on." They just show the audience he's evil and keep the story moving.
He's given enough time to feel like this ominous, looming threat, and True Colors masterfully showed how messed up this guy is and the lengths he is willing to go to ascend to the Core and cheat death, just as the souls within the Core had. His motive to avoid death and return Amphibia to the world-conquering ideologies from centuries' past is what made him such a love-to-hate villain. And the motive to cheat death in a children's cartoon? Metal as hell. The Core also parallels Belos here, and further on in Season 3, being the one manipulating Andrias through his fear of death in order to make him do what they want him to.
In the third season, Andrias continues his work by the Core's demands, only giving up in the final battle when he's read a letter from someone he had considered a friend long ago, which admittedly didn't have much set-up but it was at least the focus of an entire episode prior to the big pre-finale.
At the end of the series, he's shown to have moved on, allowing himself to age naturally and to stop using technology to keep him in pristine condition for eternity. He accepted the natural cycle of life, and in turn accepted that he will come to pass one day. He wasn't a perfectly written character, but considering what it's being compared to? Leagues better.
Like I said before, TL;DR, Collector is the bloatware of The Owl House's plot. They were shoved in as a last minute addition because they were the writers' "precious bean silly goose little gremlin blorbo" that they couldn't just keep in the drafts with the rest of the collectors. So instead of maintaining what little integrity the show's writing had to begin with and follow through to the end with the Day of Unity plotline being the series finale (Which was VERY OBVIOUSLY WHAT THEY WERE GOING FOR), they essentially made a side quest distraction that dragged the story on for longer than it needed to, wasting the audience's time.
I'm not mad that the Collector exists, I just find that their inclusion in the series did more harm than good for the writing. The show has a serious issue with giving screentime to unnecessary characters like the miscellaneous Hexside students, giving characters too much screentime (The biggest offender for this is Amity, there's more episodes centered around her than Hunter, Willow and Gus combined) and not giving ACTUALLY necessary characters enough screentime (Looking at you, Emerald Trio).
I really want to rewrite TOH, and if I feel the need to rewrite a show, it's usually because there's too much fundamentally wrong with it for me to give it anything higher than a 6/10 overall. But I've already got a whole AU and a whole rewrite in the works for two other series I care wayyyyy more about, so that's gonna have to be left to other writers in this fandom.

If this post is how you've stumbled upon my page, hi :') Feel free to ask me about more or to elaborate on smth I said here if you want clarification, but if you check out my intro post and see another mutual interest we have maybe ask me about that instead of TOH please and thank you

Sam, you’ve talked a bit about the anger that comes with going undiagnosed for so long, and with having parents that dismissed your struggles. I’m about your age and I recently told my mom that I am relatively sure I have ADHD and that I was looking into getting a diagnosis, and I was at least 60% expecting her to disagree. And instead she said. “Oh yeah, I always thought that.”
Like. ????? WHAT. WHY DID SHE NOT EVER SAY ANYTHING???? Also, she was a teacher for years, and she knows how much I struggled in school so I am just. I’m honestly not sure if this is better or worse than her trying to say I couldn’t possibly have it. Like, at least she acknowledges that I struggled I guess? :/ Anyways, how’s it going with you?
I mean, I'm a big fan of repression.
That's only partially a joke. I'm not a big fan of repression but I do believe in trying to correct negative/damaging thoughts when they can't lead anywhere productive. I'm not a "think positive" person per se, but...
Yes, I am angry I didn't get a diagnosis earlier, particularly since it's not like my family was ignorant about the issue. But meditating on that just makes me more upset, and discussing this with my mother is not going to be cathartic for me or productive for either one of us. Even if I just wanted to take out my anger on her, which is a childish but understandable impulse, it's not like she did it maliciously. She was doing the best she could alone with three kids to raise and she desperately needed at least one of them to be "normal", for reasons that have much more to do with her upbringing and mental health than anything to do with me or my siblings.
And that's all a fucked up situation, but there's nothing to be done about the past. So when I feel annoyance or anger, I stop and think, okay, but there's no point in lingering. Get it out if you have to, but then let's move on to how you can repair that damage. Then I talk about it on here so other people will feel okay about it, and I try to practice compassion, to remember that my parents tried to give their kids a good life with the tools they had and with their own disabilities to deal with.
It sounds like you're in a different place than I am, so I don't know how helpful this is. Not that you really asked for help, it's sweet that you just asked me how I'm doing, but I like to be helpful anyway :) I think the anger you're feeling is normal; the "oh yeah I assumed you had a disability and DID NOTHING" situation is actually quite common, you're not the first person I've spoken to who's had that experience. But part of managing the anger is making a conscious decision about what to do when you feel it.
Pema Chodron, a Buddhist nun, wrote a book called Start Where You Are that I read about five years ago and which I've found useful in managing emotions about things I can't change. I think it gets overhyped as a self-help book, but that's not really how it functions; it's more about explicating a specific line of Buddhist reasoning and using Buddhist practice to accept the difficulty of the world without buying into helplessness over it. Part of that is learning to sit in the pain of unhappiness -- to acknowledge an emotion, experience it, and move into either using it for a productive purpose or letting it go. It's a practice that doesn't come easily, but it does seem to help, at least for me.
Funnily enough, I started writing the Shivadh novels before I had a diagnosis but I knew from the first novel that Jerry was neurodiverse. Writing him with ADHD, even as a supporting character, has been very helpful for me because like me he can't really talk to his parents about it, with a father who has passed and a mother who is in denial. But he's still a fundamentally likable person who gets to demonstrably mature over the course of the books, to achieve things he couldn’t before and be praised for it. It's very satisfying to write about someone who got a late diagnosis and that made his life measurably better. Because it has, for both of us! I would rather have this diagnosis at forty than never have had it at all.
So yeah I'm sad, and angry, and struggling, but crucially I'm not taking it out on myself or others, and I know that this is a temporary situation. These are feelings that will fade in time because they arise from grief for could-have-been, and it's worth the sadness and the anger to have the diagnosis and to finally have help. I can't help the failures and bad relationships and mistakes I made because I had a disability I didn't know about, but I didn't know about it -- and now that I do I can improve my life going forward. What I'm feeling now is passing; what caused those feelings is permanent, and from now on I'll understand myself better (and, at least in theory, have access to bomb-ass medication to help raise my quality of life).
