Prefacing by saying I have been a hardcore Hazbin fan since mid 2019, pre-pilot release. I am not an embittered anti.
Hazbin's pacing doesn't make me angry, it makes me sad. I think about this show setting up like a normal cartoon, letting us get to know the characters, letting us see them day-to-day and strengthening their relationships with each other and how they cope in different silly or serious situations, and I get... just, upset. This isn't a cartoon, this is a webcomic, and it's a webcomic based off some lady's twitter where she gave us a character sheet for everyone before we clicked on so the comic wouldn't have to waste time explaining it. I'm sad.
Who is this Camille lady and what do I care if she killed an angel? Her daughters? Who? I don't know either of their names and I don't care enough about her or them to check. I just met her today! If she dies, if her daughters die, what difference does it make to me? A random decent character design is gone? Ok??
What do I care if Vaggie has self esteem issues? I don't know her, I just met her! I'd care so much more about her song if I cared about her! I'm just expected to care because, hey, Hazbin had a huge fandom pre-release, so why wouldn't I care? She's had so much fanon and speculation, that practically did all the set up for me, right?
,,,nO. I still need you to do the work! I want to know who these people are before I see all their trauma laid bare, because otherwise all they are to me IS their trauma, and it's tough to get invested in that in a world this bleak with a cast this huge.
Helluva Boss did the same thing - Octavia is introduced in episode 2, and then in that same episode we get some big emotional dramatic moment with her and her father that feels like it should have capped an entire character arc. And yeah, I like Octavia, I like her design and her voice and her relationship to her family, but I sure didn't care when she cried about a conflict I only learned 2 minutes ago I was meant to be taking seriously. She gets another big arc for her issues in s2e2, and I cared a LOT MORE, because not only have I actually met her before that episode, I had the entire episode to develop on her specifically and lead up to the emotional climax! It didn't just play happy dappy with her all day and then make her break down, it was a clear progression. Same with Fizz - I enjoyed his recent episode with Blitzo, because I have had several episodes to build up both their individual characters and their relationship to each other and past tension. If that had been their first episode together, I would have again, not cared one bit.
Man.

So often in myth there's a quest to find the Water of Life hidden away in some obscure Fountain of Youth or Tuck Everlasting-style pool. And it'll be this closely guarded secret that only a few people ever know about: a finite resource.
But what's so beautiful is that in Narnia, there's a whole ocean of it. The Water of Life is boundless and infinite. It's all you can see in every direction. You are literally floating in it.

does it bother anyone else when shippers say that there is “no platonic explanation” for something? like i understand when it’s about kissing on the mouth, cuz like 9 times out of 10 that’s a romantic thing, but when characters say “i love you”, one blushes at the other, they buy each other something sweet, stuff like that. like. there literally is tho? i understand that some people use that as fire to fuel a ship (i get it, i’ve done that too for ships i like) but i just *loathe* when people say that there’s no way it can be platonic. i get that most people don’t mean it to be but it just feels really invalidating to aro people, especially those in close friendships and queer platonic relationships. it just enforces the myth that platonic relationships can’t be as passionate or affectionate as romantic ones.
yes that blush can be romantic. yes, they might be holding hands because they are romantically involved. no, that doesn’t mean your favorite romantic ship is canon. no, that doesn’t mean that those two close friends are necessarily lovers.

thinkin about pern biota again. thinking about the canonicsl time travel. what if the post- ninth pass people broke the continuity by going back in time to seed pern's biosphere with engineered life resistant to thread. or fully just steal pre-thread biota and re-introduce them.

you know I hate marrinete too. When people make like adrien salt, its unrealistic. They made adrien a brat who carves for attention, who believes lila even though he knows she is lying and the stereotype rich boys you know. Meanwhile the marrinete salt is realistic and more canon on what she is doing.
to be fair, not really a fan of either marinette or adrien in canon (they are just poorly written), but marinette gets away with a lot more stuff in both canon and fandom. she can sabotage her love rivals, lie, steal, and abuse her powers, and is called a girl boss at the end of the day. adrien does it, and he's called a stalker and a harasser. plus, we have seen marinette's jealous and how it affects her decisions (bubbler, miracle queen/heart hunter). it's just messy messy writing.

I don’t understand why people are so mad at the season final. Maybe once I get the chance to watch it later today I’ll see, but as far as I can find, they have a pretty happy ending? At least from spoilers
… not at all 😅 watch it and lmk what you’re feeling. i’d be interested to see what you think with the full context!
discussion of spoilers for the final two episodes of s5 under the cut because i've talked enough today and don't necessarily want this in the tags.
if you’re asking me specifically why i found it unsatisfying i talked about it in another ask earlier but my thoughts boil down to this:
while yes the story is clearly continuing from here and there’s big sinister energy hanging over this alternate (?) reality (??) this season was marketed as the end of the first main arc and that being the case having chat noir and ladybug not together fighting off the big bad they’ve been trying to defeat for five seasons just feels… wrong? narratively unsatisfying? incomplete? kind of a let down?
i didn’t need to see heroes from the specials- it didn’t pay off emotionally the way ladybug and chat noir fighting together would have. they’re the crux of the show and there’s only a one off line at the end of the final episode about chat noir being happy to be back while he’s flanked by like twenty other superheroes.
and that doesn’t even touch on adrien’s continued ignorance about his father and lack of agency in the last two episodes. especially when it comes to taking down his abuser who in the end got a statue.
ofc the show goes on from here and obviously there are things set up to be conflict in the next season but there was no closure for a lot of the story lines they set up. imo the finale focused too much on acknowledging an underdeveloped “cinematic universe” giving a large amount of episode time to characters we’ve only seen once or twice before and in the process left the most important relationship (ladybug and chat noir) dangling in the wind. which, for me, left that “happy” scene at the end feeling like so much junk food in a too empty stomach.
maybe if this fight hadn’t been built up for five seasons, maybe if this wasn’t marketed as an endpoint for parts of the story, maybe if they’d at least had both the main characters in the same room for the final battle some of these other things could be overlooked? but because we’re looking at it from the viewpoint of at least some sort of final beat to a story we’ve been watching develop for nearly a decade the glaring holes are impossible to overlook, impossible not to feel.
like i said maybe season six will make this finale age better than it feels right now. but for me, for now, it was just disappointing.

I really don't understand why the show is paced like this, I just don't? Even if they were told at production they would ONLY have 8 episodes, low chance of a s2, that this was all they'd get - I dunno, how is sucking all of the fun and investment out of your plot the best solution outside of, like, writing what you reasonably can and then maybe trying for a comic book or something? Again, I know that's shit feeling, I know it'd suck, I know it'd hurt. But again, even if this is the only medium you WANT to tell your story in, how is telling it BADLY the answer? It's crashing 50k words of fic into a list of bulletpoints.
I don't care about any of these characters. Not because I'm some spurned anti or someone who went in ready to hate - I've fandomed this show since June 2019. I've been obsessed with these characters and world. I have written nearly half a million words of fanfiction for these guys, including all of the background characters they keep giving love like Molly and Mimzy and Rosie. But that's all fanon, and I know how to seperate that in my brain. Which means I love the idea of these characters - I'm thrilled to see even the little cameos, It feels like fanservice in a way that makes me buzz with energy - but I don't love the characters. In canon, I don't care about Alastor, or Husk, or Charlie. I actively feel disinterest in ones like Camille and Vaggie and Adam. They have no depth, only gesturing at interesting ideas and trauma. Angel, I'm STARTING to care about, but they only gave him a real personality AFTER dropping all of his trauma on us. So great. It's discord group chats all over again.
Just.. why. Is doing 3 seasons worth in 1 season really worth it? Is it, frankly, better than nothing at all? I cared more about these guys when I had the privelege of assuming they'd have deep developed arcs and connections, that the hotel denizens would get a chance to bond and interact and flesh themselves out. Now they're pretty png's standing vaguely near each other, occasionally breaking into song or crying about their past. Big whoop.
I wish s1 had developed the hotel solely - no Velvette, no Camille, no Zestial, no Mimzy, no Sera or Emily or Lucifer or Lilith, and then saved that stuff for s2 when we CARE about our protagonists and can afford to care about other characters, instead of all of them being 'cool, I guess'
I'm sad. I'm really sad. I waited over 4 years for a slideshow.

Arcanists are just nerdy Templars.
Don't get me wrong. Arcanist is super fun and I love mine, but it feels like a reworked Templar build. As a templar main, I've noticed a lot of similarities. (Especially "Jesus beam"/"book beam")
Obviously it has its own unique moves, but it handles a lot like Templar (at least dps wise, no idea what tank/healer is like).
I think that's why I love it so much and all of my non Templar friends gave up on it so quickly. Because it feels familiar.
Anyway, just my two septims.
If anyone from ZoS happens to read this,

Miraculous-- Purification Power
I’m sure other people have mentioned this somewhere before, but of the many, MANY things that bug me in some way about Miraculous Ladybug (but for some reason I keep watching because apparently I enjoy hating on the show) is that one of the big powers is to De-Evilize/Purify the Akuma Butterflies. Now in itself having to Purify the Akuma makes a degree of sense, but the reason they have to do so only ever comes up once, in a flashback episode that happens several episodes after the premiere episode. Not only that but the definition of Purification is ‘To Remove Contaminants’ and is often done by destroying or neutralizing the contaminant substances if direct removal is too difficult/impossible.
So two things: 1) Why even make Purification a thing if you are never going to make it an issue? Other than Stoneheart Ladybug never fails to Purify the Akuma and then it was only because of lack of information not ability and the Purification action is apparently very easy and foolproof. 2) Why is Ladybug the one with the Purification power if her power is to Create? I can’t help but feel the inclusion of the Purification requirement was just to give Ladybug more importance and make Chat Noir more dependent on her because without Ladybug’s ability to Purify-- a power that in my opinion lends more to the idea of Destruction-- Akuma Chat Noir can not win any fights... unless he refrains from using his Cataclysm for the entire fight and uses it purely to Purify the Akuma-- which adimittingly is an issue that will be resolved when Chat get’s his ‘adult’ powers and can use his Cataclysm multiple times.
So the Purification aspect never comes up and only exists to increase the importance of Ladybug and decrease the importance of Chat Noir and showcase how the two very much are NOT equals no matter what the lore says.
On Another Note: Ladybug leaves Paris twice in the specials without giving her Miraculous to someone else like in Hack-San. One of those times she just tells Chat to deal with Akuma himself and the other... Okay I never watched Shanghai so I don’t know if she knew Chat wasn’t going to be in Paris but I’ll say she did know. In BOTH of those cases what exactly was she expecting to happen? In the NY special she gets mad at Chat Noir for leaving Paris-- understandable since he said he was staying-- but even if he had stayed he’d have been unable to deal with any Akuma or SentiMonsters because the writers decided Chat can’t fight Sentimonsters (the ONE TIME his Cataclysm doesn’t cause physical damage to the target is when he attacks the enemies he should be able to one shot without moral consequence) and he can’t Purify Akuma or Amoks or fix the damage caused by them. Meaning in the NY special Ladybug just wanted Chat to die basically because remember she didn’t even learn of the Sentimonster attack that happens in that special until like, an hour or more after it ended AND she didn’t bring the Horse with her so she couldn’t have gone back to help anyway. It is only luck on her part that Shadowmoth is also in NY and she ends up being in the right place to fight him. Then in the Shanghai special she KNOWS Chat isn’t going to be in Paris DOESN’T know Shadowmoth is going to be in Shanghai himself, and it is only by pure luck for her AGAIN that she didn’t leave the city to be destroyed by him.
Now, if Chat gets his ‘adult’ powerset before the end of the show he SHOULD lose a lot of his dependence on Ladybug for fights as he has more potential to just brute force wins and can take care of the Akuma himself... it wouldn’t happen like that because Astruc thinks that making your female characters competent means making your male characters useless, but logically that’s how it would work.
What do you all think?
