Chapter 2: Tavern
Nobody had an idea where their large friend had vanished off to. Ironic how, anywhere he went, he seemed to pop out of any crowd like a sore-thumb. Now nobody could see the blonde.
He was in a tavern.
The candles were flickering in the dim, wooded open-planned room. It seemed that despite all the technological upgrades since coming in contact with the outside world, some businesses did not bother (or perhaps were not able) to afford electrical lights. There were vague popping noises still grumbling into the foundation of the buildings centering around the celebration, but luckily they seemed to be more muffled in this direct, tucked-away vicinity.
This must’ve been the lady’s tavern, no doubt. That, or it was her family’s. The blonde’s eyes hadn’t left the small table she had crammed him into, and he barely had more than just a single sip from the mug of tea she had made for him. He was still obviously so shaken up. The tea must’ve been cold, she added in thought.
“I know who you are,” she said quietly. The whole world did. She was sitting at a neighboring table, having found herself drying off some mugs that had been previously washed. She had managed to make a whole set-up for herself, a rag displayed over the wooden framed surface with empty cups alike face down onto it. To him, this must’ve happened in no time at all.
A few minutes of silence. He had simmered down a bit, and for some reason when he was graced with her voice he seemed to relax a little. His arm levered down the mug slowly, only stopping once he felt and heard the clink of the china against the counter. His eyes rolled from looking down, and his hooded eyelids raised to reveal that he was now finally making eye-contact with her. Briefly. He occupied his gaze back toward his mug as if he found it more attractive. The both of them remained placid. “Thank you, Janette,” the soldier spoke quietly to share his gratitude. Adding her name to it was just the cherry on top.
The brunette shook her head, her hand moving yet another glass from the wet pile to the dry, toweled pile. “I can imagine how hard it was- for any soldier,” she soothed. Her hands met at another wet glass and she began to dry it out of any leftover water droplets. “I respect any soul who took that vow.” The blonde heard the brunette’s chair scraping against the floor, and soon after there was a shadow imposing over his frame and a pair of hands to boot to take the mug from the table. “I’ll heat this up.” So he had been here for a while, he thought.
She felt pity for him. “Wait, don’t,” his voice curtled in his throat. The man who was crouched into the table extended out his hand to take the mug. “I don’t mind cold tea,” he added after clearing his throat. Truth is, he usually liked warm beverages to remain warm, but in a fit of petty, he could not afford for someone else to feel sorry for him. Janette’s eyebrow raised curtly, and she handed the man his claimed mug back. Well that made things infinitely more awkward. Now he wished she would’ve just heated it up for him, because every time he took a sip there was a visible, slight wince to his expression that did not need anyone to expound on. He was suffering. Rough night, right? The dark-haired girl popped herself back into her seat and continued her work, and after a muted 10 minutes, she began to speak again.
“You’re welcome to leave when the fireworks end.” “I was planning on it, thank you,” shit. That sounded rude.  “Right,” her eyebrows raised to herself as she wiped a few more droplets out from a glass. “In that case, it was very nice to meet you. I won’t tell anybody about what happened, alright?”  “Thanks..”
—
The fireworks did not end. He was fine enough by now to hold his own without fearing for his life, that is, within the building. Janette’s make-shift cleaning table was long emptied, and she had occupied herself with a few late-night customers who had waded in to get away from the crowd. Reiner had not even drank halfway through his mug of tea all this time, and he was starting to feel a tad bit too awkward for his own taste. If only he had handled this situation better, he thought, maybe he could’ve been less embarrassed.
He felt his nerves tingle, and without thought he scooted his chair back and felt his boots clunk against the floorboards. His feet were sore as his weight bore down against his leather-boot soles, and a slight adjustment of discomfort was all he could do as he approached his evening savior. A rumble in the foundation, again, and he found himself pausing stiffly against a wooden post. That didn’t help much, because it just reverberated the vibrations into his body now. A sharp inhale, and a leg extending out to continue the mission seemed all a bit robotic as he went over to the woman who took him here in the first place.
She hadn’t even noticed his approach. Nobody had. The evening visitors were regulars and having a good laugh until the large blonde stuck out like a sore thumb between the group of them. The woman eyed the man in curiosity before she walked from behind the bar-tending counter and toward him. She guided him a few feet back as if to make it a more private endeavor, the man complying without any look of complaint in his eyes.
“We have an extra room upstairs if you need a place to sleep tonight,” she offered. “I don’t know if that’ll help-”
“My room is downstairs, it’ll mute any noise better than any place you’ll find,” she interrupted. Her voice was a bit urgent, but her body language spoke in the exact opposite way. She seemed genuine. It caught the man off guard, and he shook his head carefully. He wasn’t some soldier about to take up and quarter in a home that was not his. He raised a hand up as if to object, his mouth even opening before she spoke again. “You have nothing to owe me for this. I’ll sleep upstairs.”
Would his friends worry about him? No.. Not as long as he showed up bright and early to their meeting with the council. “Thank you..”
The brunette mouthed something muted to her customers as she guided the brawny man to a far corner and down a secluded staircase. What was she saying to those people? Words of pity, he ruminated. Suddenly he felt his chest tighten, and the layers of clothes felt more like heavy weights bearing down against his body. They reached the bottom, and despite the fear of it being pitch black, he kept his arms taut around himself.
“Janette..” “Yes?” The dark-haired woman replied as she stood up straight. Ah, he could see. She had lit up a lantern by her nightstand and had been crouched for easier access. “I don’t need this pity, really..” Was pity the best word he could find?  “You’re not getting any special treatment for saving the world.” Was that sarcasm? He felt his cheeks turn a color of pink. “That’s not what I was implying-” “Good. There’s a bathroom to your right.” She didn’t even give him a second glance. Had he done something wrong? Of course he did..
She was gone without even another moment to spare. She left the soldier standing.

2. Freedom
Enyo's golden hair misbehaved like straw and stuck straight up when she sat with heavy, sleep-creased eyes. Her hair was still sopping wet from her immediate visit to the washroom last night and she had slept awfully. She rolled and tossed and turned and rolled some more with thoughts of the man from the Underground. Yeah, he was messy, but was he really the kind of person who was thoughtless?
Enyo crawled out of bed like a zombie preoccupied by creating a story for the man she saw. He could be a grand miner! Maybe he was rich and hunted for diamonds and gold for his career. Yes, she thought to herself. He wasn't a citizen of the Underground at all! He had papers to live above ground and was only that messy because he pursues his career in the mines! Yeah. That's it. He's actually a really good man for working with his crew in the mines.
She busied herself in the library because she was committed to finishing the book about constellations before the party. Her mind wandered back to the messy man and wondered if he had ever seen the constellations. Enyo had. It was a phenomenon to see them, as they were only visible during the cold months of the year, but still, she had seen them. Did the people in the Underground even know what a constellation was?
"Enyo dear-get your feet off the chair!" Theodora snapped. She scowled at her daughter and cleared her throat loudly, "I expect you downstairs in five minutes for breakfast."
Enyo smoothed her hair and walked downstairs in a light pink dress and watched Theodora plate up an egg and half a slice of toast. The savory scents wafted up Enyo's nose and she licked her lips and took a loud, crunching bite.
"Eat with your mouth shut," Theodora said. "My walls! Are you seriously going to resort to being a whore with no manners the day of your party? Sit up straight!"
Enyo zipped her shoulders back and stared at the toast. Theodora smiled at her daughter's corrections and gushed about the days' events. First, Enyo was to head back out to the Heisman's and seriously convince them to host the party tonight. After that was a waxing appointment, then a shaping appointment, and another lesson in manners before the party began. By the time the night was up, according to Theodora, Enyo would be sharing a bed with the King.
Tobias left for his government job part way through breakfast. He scarfed his eggs and slices of toast like a scavenging dog and stomped out the door. Enyo wished she could show the much beast-like exuberance of her father, but her mother would slap her right away if she even tried.
"Go to the market and hunt down the Heisman's," Theodora ordered.
No one was happier to be away from Theodora's presence than Enyo. She slipped on a pair of tan flats and rushed out the door with her mother's coin purse. When the sunlight breathed against Enyo's skin, a deep breath and a smile donned the girl's face. She walked toward the market with a youthful bounce, free from the judging eyes.
Carts bustled by and Enyo stared at the Heisman's Pastry Shop sign, debating whether or not she wanted to go in. A priest begged the people to worship the Walls, and a boy threw a rock at the holy man. Enyo giggled as the boy sprinted off while the priest resorted to cursing.
"I just saw the Wings of Freedom!" someone gasped.
The Scouts were never in the Royal Capital. The only time Enyo had seen the Wings of Freedom was when her school teacher had drawn them on the board. She'd also seen the flags fly on the King's court, but she had never seen a Scout in the flesh. She spun and spun with wide eyes trying to catch a glimpse of the green cloaks and white wings.
"Where?" Enyo quietly turned down the alleyway behind the Military Police's quarters where the recruitment station was located. It was a lame wooden frame with the three insignias represented: the Military Police, the Garrison, and the Scouts.
A cart of fresh fruits pushed past Enyo and she stared at the large figure of Klause Heisman pushing a cart of berries and apples into the pastry shop. She glanced at the recruitment station, and back at the Heisman's.
The recruitment station.
The Heisman's.
The Wings of Freedom.
Captivity.
"Excuse me miss," a member of the Garrison said, "you're blocking the way. Unless you intend to sign up."
"I do."
What?
The soldier stood a little taller and grabbed the pen in front of him. "Name?"
"Enyo Aetos."
What am I doing?
"An Aetos?" The soldier paused to look Enyo up and down.
"I'm fifteen and from here, the Royal Capital."
The soldier furrowed his brows. "Miss Aetos, I feel inclined to let you know that if you choose to back out of the military after you enroll, you will be shipped off to do farm labor. You can't come running home once you've had your fill of the real world."
Mom's going to kill me.
"I know," Enyo quietly said. Everyone knew what happened to flunking cadets.
The soldier scribbled and Enyo's throat lurched. She watched as he filled out her paperwork and she waited patiently for him to hand the pen to her. Her hands refused to move. She stared at the paper with her name at the top. Once she signed, her time would be up.
Two Scouts walked by, Wings of Freedom rushing behind them.
Freedom.

WAIT WAIT HEAR ME OUT
KUNIBRAM BUDDY DADDIES AU‼️( joked about by my friend but i really ran with it)
Tumblr media
- Kazuki = Kunikida, Rei = Bram, Miri = Aya ofc
Tumblr media
- Yuzuko and Misaki would be ocs because i don’t want anything bad to happen to actual characters lmao. Kunikida would obviously have a troubling past he can’t get over and blames himself for. He thinks it’s his fault the woman he cares for died.
We know Aya’s dad isn’t necessarily the best but it would just be her mother instead.
- Karin would be Yosano cause imaging her as an aunt to Aya is adorable
- Shigeki would be Fukuchi. Bram is trying to separate himself from that part of his past.
- Ogino is 100% Fyodor
- Kyutaro i have no idea, maybe Ranpo or even Fukuzawa
- The guy who died while fighting Rei (sorry i don’t remember his name lmao) would be Sigma💔💔 someone from the same organization who found a new life and purpose but then had it taken from him. Bram isn’t going to let that happen to him.
- Two hitman who live together with very different pasts and accidentally end up adopting a kid because they kill her dad💀
Tumblr media
- They met and Bram wasn’t taking good care of himself so Kunikida (very lovingly) yelled at him and helped him eat better and keep up with his hygiene.
- Bram would ofc want to take care of every stray cat he sees and Kunikida would have to keep explaining he wouldn’t be great at it.
- Bram is unsure of taking a kid at first while Kunikida already acts like a mother💀
- Bram would love listening to music (like rei with his video games) and would introduce Aya to his fav bands. She then introduces him to things she listens to and he loves listening to them with her.
- Kunikida would for sure buy her everything she could want or need

Seeing big sister! Aori hold newborn! Katsura was so hilarious & yet so wholesome!! That’s exactly how I looked like when I carried my younger sister for the first time 😭 so excited yet so nervous at the same time haha
How would Aunt! Aori hold her newborn nephew(s)/niece? (:
Little Aori wasn’t prepared for the cuteness or fragility of a new life
As an adult she’s much more comfortable with holding babies, but Katsura and Shino’s baby specifically would bring on a whole new set of issues for her phobia💀

thanks for all your hard work. I’m sending a fun ask: i also play feh occasionally but i’m thinking of dropping it because i haven’t logged on in a while, how would you grade it?
Hmmm:
pros:
some units have genuinely beautiful artwork
not too difficult to gather summoning orbs and materials in a few days
gameplay is simple and easy to understand
some forging bonds are really good (my fave is combo fallen chrobin with brave chrom talking to Lucina)
gameplay is short and good to pass the time with
making themed teams is a lot of fun (my faves are fem dragon avatars and the church of seiros)
The accessories and paradise area are really cute
Very easy to mix match and customise units
neutral:
guy/gal ratio is more balanced than other gachas but obviously still prioritises the waifus
meh event rewards and an event schedule that’s become pretty predictable
Accessories are earned through forging bonds events and you need to earn a lot of points and farmed materials before winning them; skins are paid
top-down grid based view is quite simple
music is alright but doesn’t stand out compared to other gachas, especially because it borrows more from its previous games
Cons:
Story is lazy at best and atrocious at worst; extremely sexist with how often it excuses fem villains purely due to the waifu factor while mostly painting the men as crusty abusive trash; ocs are largely forgettable or annoying or actively make the story worse; narrative is not cohesive at all with nothing to tie back to previous chapters, and the writers clearly have no organisation so they hijack side modes to stuff in things they should have clarified earlier (tempest trials used to be lucina fighting against the eponymous phenomenon, then it just abruptly became paralogue faff plus hasty half-baked story explanations for the ocs getting new alts; details that need to be main story material are stuffed into forging bonds and tempest trials like the game casually mentioning ragnarok)
see above point: game is sliding harder and harder into sexist waifuisation territory, with most players agreeing that book seven is the absolute narrative nadir so far due to shit like the oc du jour asking summoner-kun to have a baby with her “to save the world”, and the main illustrator for that book (who also did book four) is a transphobic misogynist idiot whose incredibly obvious tastes leak into the villain being a sniddies “i can fix her” mess who screwed up this year’s cyl (and the rest of the game is slowly but surely becoming more and more sexualised, and though many may argue that cuboon’s summer rhealeth signalled the beginning of the end, i strongly disagree because maeshima shigeki’s loki was getting clowned on way before 3h debuted, along with misogynist shitbag kusucky breaking summer noire’s spine)—the question is if feh will at least be bold enough to admit they want to become a game like azur lane or are too coy to really push the envelope further
nothing is done much in terms of story with the ocs, but least of all with the main units farmed from other games. They are the main base of characters for summoner-kun’s army yet get very little screen time, and the ones who do is because they are waifus who keep getting alts (lyn is becoming detestable purely because of how much of a creators’ pet she is). The forging bonds mode should have been the main game story but it’s not, and what little we have of it is mostly power of friendship fluff heavily intruded into by annoying ocs (getting fjorm’d is basically a death sentence)
very little side mode variation with the most annoying shit being focused around pvp (pvp in a gacha game is turbo gambling)
farming cannot be skipped and the ai is absolutely useless, making gameplay become extremely repetitive fast
worst case of power creep I’ve seen in any gacha that I’ve played, with units becoming redundant in a matter of weeks and shiny new waifu alts quickly obliterating even 10+ built characters while the devs do nothing to balance gameplay except have to constantly introduce units to nuke threats that become too toxic (like the infamous case of legendary mbyleth debuting as a hegelgard killer)
intsys is extremely lazy so they don’t promote the game outside of its own twitter page; barely any animation except for book prologues, and new stuff is announced with shitty powerpoint style slides and effects; no merch, no livestreams, no collabs (which is hilarious considering dragalia had a feh collab), yet the latest console game was undermined by the devs urging people to use it as a springboard into feh
Final grade: used to be a solid 7, fell down to a solid 5
Would I recommend it? No lol
