#ok what makes a lot of heathers work

So last week liz took me to see a local production of heathers, which was the first time I’ve actually seen the show the whole way through, which was really interesting. The thing is, the production had a Diversity Equity and Inclusion guy listed on staff, which makes sense for a black comedy from the 80s, but ALSO there were several asian americans in the main cast and I think they must’ve been pretty strategic about casting in a pretty interesting way. heather chandler, JD, and martha were the characters in the principle cast that were played by asian americans, and it reminded me of the book ‘Forever Foreigners or Honorary Whites?: The Asian Ethnic Experience Today’—if heather c was the only asian american, that’d have unfortunate implications with ideas of assimilation/privilege (sidebar, I’ve talked to friends who live/have lived on the west coast and they’ve told me ‘yeah asian americans on the west coast are SOOO DIFFERENT from asian americans in other parts of the usa’ which is pretty interesting, but I’d imagine it’s dependent on how high the asian population is in any given place—I’m not on the west coast but my high school was like 30% asam and I’m pretty sure I walk around with less baggage than asam folks who don’t have that experience) and if JD was the only asian american that’d have really unfortunate implications mirroring that whole Yellow Peril Those Barbaric Asian Men Are After Our White Women (which, with an ungenerous reading one could argue that those implications are there anyway, but I think that having heather c as asam it leaves room for that *dichotomy*—while it’s pretty common nowadays in the usa to consider asam folks as ‘honorary whites’ [when it’s convenient], having asam characters that counter that perspective [both JD and Martha] allows room for more nuance). (another sidebar, JD is a character where I feel like the narrative is less difficult to navigate if he’s played by a white actor because it becomes more delicate if he’s played by any actor of color—I think it worked for that production, and of course I’m mega biased [pan-ethnic solidarity] [lol] so this did get me way more sympathetic to JD than I no doubt would’ve been if he had been played by a white actor). and if only JD and heather c were played by asam actors—well imo that dichotomy would be enough for some nuance, but—it’s still kind of in the unfortunate implication zone with them both being primarily antagonists, and having martha played by an asam actor neutralizes some of those implications by being a purely sympathetic character. so to me it feels like it definitely works in a way that the tv show casting Really Did Not. anyway, I’m talking about all this separate from performances, but they were all really good too—heather c was doing high kicks in insane heels??? and ballet in bathroom slippers??? also my bias kicked in for her too, she did a great job playing a severe and ruthless terrible person (lol).

hi! ok so i'm going to talk about one of my top-five favourite things, which is: dyeing stuff! this is going to be specifically about dyeing protein fibres (animal fibres—wool, alpaca, silk, etc) in a pretty low-key way in your kitchen.
to be clear up front: this is not the most scientific, most perfectly reproducible, or most Objectively Correct way to dye things. i get a lot of fibre that i like this way, though, and i think that other people can, too.
fibre i've dyed that i think is neat:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you can also dye yarn like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yes, i like blue a lot. i also really like variegation and heathering, which is why most of the fibre here has patches of white—it's an intentional choice that i've made. you can make different choices.
here is what you need to dye things:
fibre, vinegar, dye, a pot, heat, and some water.
that was so you don't get overwhelmed by the impending wall of text. here is what you need to dye things (it's the same stuff!), but with way more detail:
fibre or yarn. this is the big one, obviously. i tend to dye in 100-200 gram batches, because that's approximately what fits on my stovetop easily. if you're very nervous about felting or harming your fibre, you can use stuff that's been treated to be superwash, start with yarn (which is harder to felt than fibre is), or use a felt-resistant breed like dorset or suffolk. honestly, though, i learned with merino because that's what i had, and it was fine. again, though, this guide is only for protein fibres. it will not work for things like cotton. the only exception to this is nylon, which will take on some colour, but less than a protein fibre will.
a mordant. this is a fancy way of saying a thing that makes dye stick, and for what we're doing here, it's citric acid or vinegar. your grocery store definitely has at least one of them, though if you can choose, i prefer citric acid, because i love wet wool smell but i do not always love wet wool vinegar smell.
dye. i use acid dyes, and am personally deeply loyal to dharma acid dyes, but ashford and jacquard acid dyes work the same way. if you don't want to buy dye or don't have access to it, food colouring will often work, as well, though i haven't tried this with natural food colourings and have no idea how well they'll work.
a dedicated dye pot. ok, if you're doing food dyes, you don't need this. if you're not, it's definitely best practice, though i don't know how dangerous it is not to. any large metal pot will do, but my favourite option is hotel pans, which are those huge metal pan/tray things that hold food at buffets and the like. i have a full-size one that's 15cm deep, and a half-size one that's 4cm deep. they're great because they let you lay out the fibre you're working with so you can see most of it in a single layer.
dedicated dye utensils. as before, i don't know how much of a huge deal this is. i'll be honest and admit that for several years i had a single pair of tongs that got used for all tong-requiring events, including dyeing, and i'm still alive. i suggest that you have at least a big spoon, and a big spoon and tongs are even better.
something to mix the dye in. yeah, i use empty plastic sports drink or soda bottles for this. you can be fancy and get mason jars or little squirt bottles or whatever, and if you get super into dyeing you'll want to mix up dye stocks, but that's way outside the scope of what we're doing here. i like the powerade bottles that have a little squirty mouthpiece, because it's fun to squirt dye onto things.
personal protective equipment. i think this is the part of things that freaks people out. ideally, you wear plastic gloves and a mask (yeah, like your covid masks) when you're working with dye. realistically, i almost never remember to put on gloves and just accept that my hands are going to be blue sometimes. you should wear a mask, because dye is an irritant, but the world is an imperfect place and i have wicked bad adhd and sometimes i forget. this isn't advice. i'm just being honest. you should use some kind of safety stuff. you probably won't die if you don't.
you might also want some little random bits: an old toothbrush or paintbrush, a pipe cleaner, some toothpicks, etc. this is mostly if you like speckles, or if you want very small patches of colour.
so first: there are a million ways to dye things, and i'm not convinced that any of them are objectively correct. i do what i do and it works for me. some of the things i do are the opposite of what most guides suggest, but i do them because i like the effects they create.
ok, that's all the background stuff you need. let's dye some stuff!
the number one most important thing to remember when you're dyeing is this:
you can always add more colour. you cannot take it away.
that's in fancy writing and bold because every once in a while i forget this, and every single time i end up regretting it.
here is how to dye things:
put water, citric acid (or vinegar), and fibre into a pot. add dye and heat. let cool completely. rinse the fibre in cool water, then hang to dry.
like, sure, we're going to go into way more detail, but push come to shove, if you do that, you're going to end up with dyed fibre. there are a lot of tutorials telling you that you must soak your fibre first, or you must add your citric acid this way, or hold the water at exactly this temperature, and i'm here to tell you that while any of these things can give you different results, those results aren't necessarily better.
the only way that you can totally screw this up is by accidentally felting your fibre, so before i get into the way more detail part of things, i'm going to talk about that.
how not to felt your fibre
i feel like if you've read this far, you know how things felt: wool, heat, and agitation. you may also notice that at least two of these things are required for dyeing. this can be stressful! but you don't have to be afraid of it. there's only been one time that i felted something to the point that it was unusable, and that happened because i literally fell asleep for several hours while the pot was on the stove. you can avoid doing this by simply setting an alarm—this is a good idea anyhow, because you'll want to check on your dye pot!
when you're dyeing, use the lowest heat that you can while still keeping the water at a simmer. if your stove, like mine, has one burner that's wildly unpredictable and sort of out of control, you may want to look for some sort of flame diffuser, also called a flame tamer or a simmer ring. i bought one on amazon for about fourteen dollars, and it's literally just a thick metal circle. it works fine.
you can also keep the heat low by using a pot with a thick bottom, though in my experience those are expensive, and if i had one i would be using it for soup, not wool.
avoid shocking your wool—never put room temperature wool into hot water, and never put hot wool into cold water. leave your wool in the dye bath until it's cooled completely, which for me usually means overnight.
finally, obviously you have to move the fibre around some. you'll need to peek under it in the pan, and when you're done, you have to rinse it and squish out the water. try to minimise handling, though. don't run water directly onto the fibre, don't get a wooden spoon and stir your dye pot around, don't wring the fibre dry when it's done.
you're probably never going to be perfect. i often find that i lose a gram or two of wool where fibres have grabbed onto each other, or where parts of the ends clumped up. it's not really felted, just sort of compacted, but it's not great to work with, and i'd rather lose a gram of fibre than fuss with the clumpy bits.
back to how to dye things
let's take it step by step, assuming a hundred grams of fibre.
put your pan on the stove and fill it halfway with water. add either a teaspoon of citric acid or a tablespoon of vinegar. this is going to help the dye strike, or stick to the fibre. the teaspoon/tablespoon is a guideline, but one that it's fine to exceed. adding more will help the dye strike faster, which can be useful if you're trying to create blocks of colour on your fibre. i usually err on the side of a little more than the guidelines, and just eyeball this—if you feel like the dye isn't taking well, you can add more later.
add your fibre to the pan. this is the first place you have to think about what you want the finished fibre to look like! you can put it into the pan any way you want, but i suggest trying to keep it in a relatively even layer, regardless of what that layer looks like. here are some ways to get specific effects:
if you want a gradient from one end of the fibre to the other, use a rectangular pan and lay your fibre out so that the line of it is parallel to the short sides of the pan
if you want a short, repeating gradient, use a rectangular pan and lay your fibre out so that the line of it is parallel to the long sides of the pan
if you want something that starts with very close repeats that get further apart as you go down the fibre, make an approximate spiral
if you don't want A Pattern (i usually don't) just lay things out in a single layer, more or less
here comes the next exciting part! decide if you want to let your fibre soak or not. again, doing or not doing this gives you some different effects!
soaking your fibre will mean that dye takes more evenly. if you want consistent colours, you'll want to soak.
not soaking your fibre means that the dye takes less evenly. the fibre on top will have less acid available to it, spends less time in the dye bath, and also has to actually get wet before it will start to dye. i actually love doing this, and think it affords a lot of cool opportunities to play with and layer colours.
if you're soaking, leave the fibre there until it's submerged. if not, don't.
now you're going to add dye! decision time, again.
you can add dye when the water is cold, which will give you more even dye coverage, and in my experience gives the colours more time to mix together
you can add dye when when the water is hot, which will give you less even coverage, and tends to encourage the colours to stay more delineated
probably surprising no one, i tend to heat the water first unless i'm starting with a base colour or i'm doing a two-colour gradient.
time to mix up some dye
as i mentioned earlier, i'm assuming that you're using powered acid dyes for this. if you're not, this mixing up part is technically optional—but doing it gives you way more control about how and where you place your colours, so i'm going to assume that you'll do it.
i usually mix dye in some sort of empty drink bottle. regardless of what you're using, before you add dye to anything, put some water in the bottle, wipe off the lip, put the lid on tightly, and shake the bottle vigorously. if there is any leakage at all, do not use that bottle. find a better bottle. if your bottle cap doesn't seal well or if you have an empty condiment bottle that's just a little wonky or whatever, you will get dye all over the kitchen, and your landlord will be really really mad about it, and you will regret your life choices. (if you own your kitchen, you can do whatever you want, but this isn't about you and you know it.)
so you have a bottle that seals tightly! great job. dump out the water and carefully put some dye powder into the bottle. remember earlier how i said you should be wearing a mask? this is the part where you should be wearing a mask.
i know that people are reading this and going, ok, but how much dye do i put in?
my answer is put in the amount that feels right in your heart, and don't forget the number one rule of dyeing things, which is that you can always add more colour, but you cannot take it away.
this isn't a very scientific answer. most dyes have a guideline about how much to use, expressed as a percentage of the dry weight of the fibre, which is what you use to get the whole quantity of fibre dyed evenly. for dharma dyes, it's like 1.5-2%, i think ashford is 1%, and jacquard is more like 2-4%, depending on the colour.
here is the problems with doing that in your kitchen: first, using that much dye will get you an evenly dyed piece of fibre, which—for me, at least—is basically the opposite of what i want. second, and more importantly, unless you have one of those teeny tiny scales used by jewelers and drug dealers, your kitchen scale will not weigh out such tiny quantities with any accuracy. third, if you do it like this, you really have to plan what you're doing ahead of time, because there's a point after which no more dye will bind! the fibre will be like enough thank u that's it i'm good and that'll be it, so you lose some of your ability to decide that actually, you want more green.
you can probably guess, at this point, that i don't weigh the dye. once you've done a couple batches of fibre with a given brand of dye, you'll start to get the vibes for how much you should use. if you really want a guideline, for a hundred grams of fibre, start with a quarter teaspoon of a given colour. you can add more—either more of this colour or a different one—later, as desired.
put your dye in the empty bottle, and then fill the bottle partway with hot water. the amount of water doesn't really matter here, nor does the specific temperature of the water. i usually fill about 3/4 of the way, because that way there's plenty of room for this next step, which is: wipe the lip of the bottle, recap it tightly, and then shake it up real good. the dye powder is going to dissolve into the water, and you now have a bottle of dye!
if you're going for a gradient, you might want to mix up your second colour so you can add them at (basically) the same time for more even mixing. if you're not, or if you only have one mixing bottle, you can do them one at a time.
oh my god we're finally putting dye on the fibre
are you ready? it's time!!
you have basically infinite options for how to do this, and many of them will give you different effects. here are some ideas:
pour the dye all at one side of the pan. and if you don't add anything else, your fibre will fade from the colour of the dye to the natural colour of the fibre
pour two colours, one at either side of the pan. depending on how much dye you use (and remember, you can always add more), this will give you either chunks of colour surrounded by white, or a two-colour gradient
add all the dye to unheated water and mix it gently, then let the fibre soak for a few minutes longer before turning on the heat. this will give you a fairly even colour
pour randomly all over, and you'll either end up with a tonal yarn or a heathered one, depending on how much dye you're using
add the dye to the water under the dry fibre, which will sink in and take up more dye on the bottom of the fibre than the top
if your heat wasn't on before, it should be now, and you're going to let the dye hang out in the hot but not boiling water for a while. how long? well, one of the cool things about dyeing with these dyes is that they exhaust, which means that when the dye has been sucked up by the fibre, the surrounding water will be clear. how long this takes will depend on the specific dye, how much of it you used, how much mordant you used, etc. i try to check every fifteen minutes.
reminder: if you started with room temperature water, the dye's not going to start taking until the water heats up, so don't check it after fifteen minutes and freak out that nothing has happened. it is fully normal for it to take up to an hour for the dye to exhaust. don't turn up the temperature, just give it time.
yay it worked!
at this point, you have a pot of hot water with some beautifully coloured fibre in it! but maybe it's not beautiful enough. maybe you want...more colours.
that's cool as hell and you should go for it. we mentioned two-colour gradients up there, but what if you want something else?
the answer, probably obviously, is adding more dye.
first, a caveat: while you can successfully make multicoloured gradients like this, it's more difficult than you think, and if it gets messed up—all the colours bleed into each other, say—it turns into a muddy mess. my suggestion is to stick to two (or three at most!) colour gradients until you have a much better feel for what you're doing.
let's talk about ways you can add more colour. you have two options: big colour and little colour.
big colour is going to add a lot of colour—you're going to mix up the dye and pour it just like you did before, but paying more attention to places that don't have dye yet. sometimes it's the middle of a gradient, or the white splotches from random pouring, or the half of the fibre that wasn't submerged when you started. or maybe you dyed the whole thing yellow, and now you want to add a blue gradient over top. whatever!
if you don't want to freehand pour, consider buying a couple large syringes, or a bottle with a squeezy top. these are also fun because you can easily get more colour between the laid-out fibre, or even under it.
in the pictures at the start of this post, the red-and-gold top and both yarns were dyed by adding big colour.
little colour isn't going to add big patches, but is going to add speckling, tonal depth, or smaller patches of colour. all of the blue-base fibres and the yellow-and-blue yarn were dyed like this.
if you're still reading this closely, you might have caught that i just said both yarns were dyed with big colour, and that the yellow-and-blue yarn was also dyed with little colour. these are both true! the base colours of the yarn were done to make big colour, but if you look at the full-size image, there are also a bunch of speckles. you can do whatever you want! no one can stop you!
here are some ways to add little colour:
mix up some dye, but use less water. add drops of the dye, either directly onto the fibre (more dramatic!) or in the water (tonal!)
use a toothpick to grab a little bit of dye powder and drop it into the dye bath (similar to the previous one, but a little less predictable)
put on a damn facemask. take a clean toothbrush, paintbrush, or pipecleaner, and just barely touch it to the dye powder. gently flick or tap the brush to add speckles of that colour
find a salt shaker that you're never going to use for anything but this. put citric acid, salt (to make it distribute better), and dye powder into it, and shake it up (with the holes covered, please cover the holes) to make sure they're evenly distributed. gently shake this over the fibre to add speckles, but more of them, and clustered together
put a little dye in a spray bottle and gently mist the exposed fibre, kinda glazing it with colour
another thing is that if you like a natural coloured yarn with dyed speckles, you can do any of these techniques without doing big colour first. the only thing to note when doing this is that you'll want to be very sure to spread out the fibre well, and maybe to consider dyeing one side, then very very carefully flipping it over and getting the other side.
ok, now what?
let's say that you've added all the colours that you want, and you've let your bath simmer long enough that the water is clear, or nearly clear. (if it's not, check troubleshooting, below.)
put the lid on your pan and walk away. if you don't have a lid, just walk away, but it's less dramatic.
the super frustrating part here is that the safest thing to do is wait until the water and fibre is fully cooled before you do anything else.
have i ignored this? yes
has it ever gone horribly wrong? not horribly wrong, but it's definitely caused me to lose an inch or two of roving on occasion
is it way more stressful if you don't wait? absolutely yes
honestly maybe just go to bed and deal with your fibre in the morning
so now let's say that it's morning and you slept long enough that your water and fibre are both room temperature, which often actually feels quite cool on your hands.
you have to drain your fibre. there are two ways to do this:
lift the fibre out of the water. this has the upside of not risking dumping your beautiful fibre into your sink, and not needing to maneuver a full pot of water, both of which are admirable. the downside is that wet fibre is fragile, and you'll want to be careful to support it.
dump the water out of the pan. this has the upside of minimising how much handling you're doing of the fibre, as well as (in my opinion) making rinsing easier. the downside is attempting to keep the fibre into the pot while you dump the water into the sink, and also needing to carry around a full pot of water.
secret third option: dump the fibre (and the water) into a strainer. upside: very easy, and you can keep the fibre in the strainer while you rinse, minimising both how much it needs to be handled and the weight on the fibre. downside: i never remember that this is an option until i'm already elbows-deep in acidulated water, discovering every tiny cuticle tear.
you're going to fill your dyepot with water again so that you can rinse the fibre. you want to minimise thermal shock, so keep the water temperature as close to the temperature of the fibre as you can, and don't run the water directly onto the fibre. i like to pull all the fibre to one side of the pan, and fill the pan on the other side.
side note: if you, smart person, remembered that you can use a colander, simply fill a pot with water, put the colander in the pot, and gently agitate the colander.
if you, person who is deeply relatable, did not remember you can use a colander and now have a pot with clean water and fibre, gently move your fibre in the water to encourage any excess dye and also citric acid to get out of there.
drain your fibre again, and this time, you're going to squeeze it dry. you're still trying to minimise agitation, so this isn't a 'wring it out' situation, it's a 'gently squish it between your hands and/or a hand and the side of the pot' situation.
hang your fibre to dry. remember what i was saying earlier about it being fragile? let me suggest, here, that you do not simply drape the entire length over a single hanger or something and hope for the best. if you literally have a single hanger, at least drape it back and forth a bit, but better if you can use more than one hanger, or a clothes drying rack, or that weird metal wine rack thing that came with your fridge that you've never used, or whatever.
important reminder: drip-drying things will make your floor wet! if you live somewhere very clear with no major roads or pollen nearby, you can probably dry things outside, but if you don't, you'll probably want to position the drying rack in a bath, shower, laundry area, or otherwise over something that will catch and/or absorb the water.
how long it takes for the fibre to dry is another unknowable variable. if it's warm and dry where you are, it might literally be overnight. if it's damp and cool, it can take days. the batch i posted a couple days ago literally took almost a full week to dry. spread it out as best you can, gently squeeze out the water you can, and otherwise you just have to wait.
you're done!
when it's dry, that's it, you're done! you might find that you need to pick off some little lint balls or a bit of compacted or slightly felted fibre from the tips, but other than that, you should be good to go.
like most fibre stuff, this is best maintained by handwashing in cool water. you may see a little bit of dye or colour loss the first time you wash it, which is pretty normal and nothing to worry about.
congratulations! you made it to the end of this incredibly long post, and if you followed along, you've just dyed some fibre!
troubleshooting
this isn't dyed enough! i want more colours!
add more dye! i'm not the boss of you.
this is true even after the fibre is all done and dryed. there's nothing that says you can't dye it again—you can, and i have.
some fibre seems to require more dye than others. silk, for example, dyes beautifully with acid dyes, but also needs way more dye than i expect it to.
remember that if you're dyeing something that's a wool/cotton blend, for example, the cotton isn't going to dye. the only exception is nylon, which will kinda dye, but not as dramatically. this guide will not work for plant fibres.
this is too dyed! i want fewer colours!
please refer back to the number one most important thing about dyeing, which—as you know—is: you can always add more colour, but you cannot take it away.
pull out some more fibre and try again. this has a learning curve, just like any other fibre craft.
these colours don't look like i expected!
this can be about a lot of things.
colour guides, especially if you're looking at them online, aren't always very accurate.
colour guides tend to assume that you're dyeing a single colour at the suggested dye percentage of weight, and using less than that will give paler colours.
dyes, especially if you're mixing brands, can interact with each other and behave in ways you didn't expect.
dyes can also break, which is when they split into their component colour molecules. this happens commonly with blacks and browns, food colouring, and anything that dharma trading has marked as 'advanced'. some people find this very desirable and seek it out; some people are very frustrated by it.
the ph of your water can sometimes affect your dye. i've been lucky enough that i've only lived places with lead problems, not weird ph stuff, so i haven't investigated this closely, but if you're consistently not getting the results you expect, even going for a single, solid-colour dye, look at the ph.
my dye water's not clear!
if you used a quarter teaspoon of dye and a hundred grams of fibre, and it's been, say, 45 minutes of actually hot water and your water still isn't clear, you probably didn't use enough mordant, and you should add some more citric acid or vinegar to encourage the dye to get in there and do its thing.
if you used you used more like a teaspoon of dye, or if the citric acid doesn't change anything, you used too much dye for your fibre. you can either shrug and pour it down the drain, or you can add some more fibre and dye that, too.
my rinse water's not clear!
you probably used too much dye. it's ok—just keep rinsing it, gently, until it's more or less clear.
some colours just like to run—you know how every once in a while you get a yarn and it just bleeds a little bit every time you wash it? sometimes it's just like that. i wouldn't worry about it too much.
my fibre has felty/clumpy bits!
a little bit of this is normal, especially at the ends of a fibre that felts easily (this means you, merino!)
pick off the bits that you don't like—this is generally fairly easy, and involves very minimal fibre loss. i don't bother doing it until i sit down to spin, and then just pull off bits as i come to them.
if there's a lot of felty/clumpy bits, more than you can reasonably pick out, you agitated the fibre too much. there's not much for this other than trying to card it out, which may or may not work.
sometimes this happens because your stove got weirdly aggressive and boiled your fibre. especially for wool that's prone to felting, the bubbling and jostling can be enough to encourage more clinginess than you'd like.
i want my dyeing to be reproducible!
this is kinda doable. it's a handmade thing, so it's always going to have some natural variance, but you can do it.
buy a jeweler's scale that measures in fractions of a gram.
start measuring your dye and acid, and take detailed notes about what you do.
follow those notes in the future, and you'll be probably 90% of the way there.
i want to dye with natural dyes!
i fully support this and have played around with it a little bit myself, but absolutely do not know enough about it to advise you.
the internet is very large and full of many people who are much smarter than i am, and i feel confident that at least one of them is desperate to tell you all about how to do natural dyeing.
i am, at this point, not that person.
i want to dye plant fibres!
i am begging you to find another guide, because this one will not work.
you didn't answer my question!
that's what my inbox is for
i have to reiterate that i'm just a person with real specific interests who started dyeing things because i couldn't find or afford the kinds of colourways that i wanted.
i am not a professional
i will do my best to answer questions, but sometimes the answer is 'just fuck around until you find out'
plant fi—
shhhhh
the end
thank you for reading this incredibly long post! i might make another one in the near future, either so i can show pictures or because i took out an entire section about how to choose colours and pick a colour scheme and work with colours, and i kinda want to talk more about that, but this is no joke almost six thousand words long, so i thought, you know. maybe not tonight.
anyhow, i hope that this was useful to someone! thank you for letting me talk about one of my very favourite things.

Ok, so I’m going to finally post this but here’s alenoah the COMPLETE essay: I’m just gonna be talking abt why these two should’ve been canon and showing you my evidence lol. (This is gonna be long so if you’re willing to read this ily)
First of All:
The aleheather plot did not make sense. This is a good ship, I’m not saying it’s bad. But, the volcano scene kinda made it weird. Imagine your confessing to the “love of your life” but then they make you infertile, kick you down a volcano, and are the reason you’re in a robot suit/ traumatized. (Oh but Heather did what she had to do!) LOOK, I’m not saying she didn’t serve in that scene, I’m saying that the fact he was able to brush it off like it was nothing? It just isn’t realistic. Even if he is MADLY in love with her. But then they sacrifice Noah and don’t do anything with him and his unfinished rivalry with Alejandro??
Also I just want to mention the fact that these two would NOT work out after total drama. According to Marco Grazzini (Alejandro’s voice actor, TDWT):
Tumblr media
Which I do agree with 😭 I do think that a relationship with 1 narcissist can work (let’s face it, one person in a relationship is more narcissistic than the other. Or not idk.) But if two people are the narcissists in the relationship, it can eventually lead to a break up. Now, you might be wondering why I’m talking about aleheather (understandable). I just wanted to make it clear that I don’t want the aleheather shippers attacking me and how they just don’t really make sense to me as well. And also I don’t want people saying “BUT ALEHEATHER IS SUP-“ stop. (But wait! Shouldn’t you talk about Nemma then?) I’ll get there dw.
Second of All:
Alejandro and Noah had SO MANY weird interactions. No joke. I know a lot of people like to say they didn’t, but trust me, they did. And here’s some proof:
Tumblr media
THIS IS NOT A NORMAL LOOK PEOPLE. Honestly, that look on Noah’s face kind of reminds me of som..oh right that’s the exact way he looks at Emma (AKA HIS CANON GIRLFRIEND) this entire interaction was out of nowhere. (Oh but what about the fact that this scene is probably showing how shady Alejandro is) well, every single time a scene like this happens with any other character, we usually get a confessional of Alejandro trash talking them. But did we get that confessional for this scene? In fact, did Alejandro ever directly talk about Noah? NO. NOT EVEN ONCE. Even during London, Alejandro never said one single thing bad about him.
Tumblr media
OK SHORT ONE:
The fact that Alejandro mocked Lindsay with NOAH. Alejandro throughout this show has had a fake persona, but then this little comment kind of proved that Alejandro can be himself around Noah. They’re kind of like the same person after all. (I mean that in a “judgy” sense.)
I also want to point out that every challenge (except for London) and every occasion, these two are always next to each other. ALWAYS. They’re always close, they’re always giving each other looks, and tbh it makes so much sense. These two are really the only “sane” ones on team Chris. (Sami, are you SURE they’re always giving each other weird looks?Like-) Child here’s the lil collection:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
London 🇬🇧 ☕️:
London was probably the most scripted episode EVER. The entire plot for Alejandro and Noah was so bad, it came out of nowhere. (But Sami, Noah didn’t trust Alejandro in ep 7! Don’t you remember?) ofc I remember Susie. It’s just, after ep 7, nothing was done. Like Noah hates Alejandro. That’s it. Then he bad mouths him in ep 13, Noah’s voted out. A lot more could’ve been done but the writers kill off Noah so more drama can start. After all, Noah’s just a side character, right?
Tumblr media
THIS. LOOK.
This exact look is hurt. Pain. And any other dramatic thing I can think of. This entire scene just shows how much he trusted him. It’s like, when someone you truly care about, who you trust, backstabs you. They TRULY had something. (But Sami-) Before you even say “he was probably acting” lemme just show you something:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right when Noah was abt to jump out the plane, he had a shocked look on his face, then realizes the cameras are on him, and quickly changes into a smirk. HE. WAS. NOT. ACTING. He was HURT. And the wasted potential for the rivalry they could’ve had also hurts. But of course, since this was 2010, there wasn’t any lgbtq couples allowed on CN at all ☹️.
FINALLY:
As much as I do love this ship I think that these two will never see the light of day. (Scratch that, they’re def never seeing the light of day.) These two are both in canon relationships, one of which I actually love! #multishipper. Nemma honestly doesn’t have any flaws and there’s really no reason to destroy a pretty sweet relationship. However, during TDWT I’d like to argue the fact that if CN wasn’t homophobic at the time and neither was fresh tv, then these two would’ve definitely been something. It was like fresh tv was trying to give us clues lol. And if the TD writers would’ve let Alejandro and Noah have a rivalry, then there would’ve been a lot more evidence of why these two should be canon.
Tumblr media
Welp, there you go. There’s my entire essay. If you disagree with something or have anything to add you can comment down below! But keep in mind this took 2.5 hours soo…

Greasers x mean girl/boy/person (think Regina George, Heather Chandler, Bryce Tankthrust) s/o who uses their status to protect their greaser and is kind of nice under all the cutthroat boss bitch-ness. Like the top rank of social that most other socs are afraid of.
(tried to make it gender neutral of my best ability, but it’s hard to fit phrases like “ queen bee” into gender neutral terms)
Inspo:
*socs approach and start making jeering comments* Hey Grease…
*you get in front of them* if you ever talk to them like that again, I will make it my personal life goal to ruin yours, and no one will hire your sorry ass again. Oh, and you can consider *insert secret* spilled.

-you liked his wisecracks, they made the world all the more entertaining and he admired your cutthroat bitch attitude
-yall started dating after a while
-class clown x mean girl/guy/person and it’s SO iconic
-you two are surprisingly healthy for eachother, you both kind of get to see the under layer
-like you get to see what’s beyond his wisecracks and he gets to see beyond your plastic mean girl facade
Steve Randle
-he was suprised
-when you went up to him instead of Sodapop
-but when you pulled up in your red Ferrari with a scratched tire that was totally not just an excuse just to talk to him and started heavily flirting
-he wasn’t impressed, he still thought you were fake
-which bothered you, you didn’t know anyone who didn’t like you or at least pretend to
-so you kept showing up and one day a group of Socs stopped by the gas station, spitting on him
-you got furious and nearly ruined your car trying to ram them
-Steve was kinda in love after that
-he realized you really weren’t plastic
-you guys got together and are sooo cute
-when you go on long rants he listens to you while he fixes his cars
-and you have a free new handyman

as an avid velvette lover, i gotta ask about your hcs for her, give me the silly random shit, smut WHATEVER- i just need more of HER (and ideas to doodle)
AAA HI I LOVE YOUR ART AND THIS ASK WAS SO MUCH FUN TO DO OMFG :3
Theese headcanons are all over the place, they also include a bit of Vox and Valentino, they're everywhere so apologies in advance!! (Bit of NSFW) enjoy!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
~ Velvette can't spell for shit, ok this is random but this poor girl cant help to save her life
~ She is the typa girl to sing I'm the shower (really fucking loudly mind you) and sometimes you cheer her on outside the shower.
~ Her favorite types of movies are musicals, more specifically Heathers (me too girl)
~ As much as she loves extravagant dates she prefers cozy movie dates with you, feeding each other chocolate strawberries and all that stuff.
~ Her favorite season is summer, and her favorite holiday?
~ “My favorite holiday? Well obviously it's my birthday! why wouldn't it be”
~ She likes drawing sometimes, she sketches in her journal, usually outfit designs but sometimes other stuff too.
~ More specifically you. you looked through her journal while she was at work once and there were a hell of a lot of sketches with you, a few of her sketches were both of you with little hearts around them, and a few pages with you modeling her outfit ideas.
~ Velvette used to take you both to clubs, but you got hit on one too many times and she refuses to take you to one ever again.
~ Every year she throws the most crazy halloween party where everyone gets drunk, her last halloween costume was a female (kinda slutty) ghostface costume
~ Her halloween parties usually go south immediately, Valentino is trying to get everyone to work for him and is high out of his mind, he's been staring at the ceiling lamp for an hour.
~ Vox is chugging alcohol and is getting way too drunk, he's glitching out every sentence. He's calling carmilla drunk and telling her what a bitch she is apparently, carmilla Is used to this and ain't amused, she's gonna block his number soon.
~ As for Velvette she's recording everyone's stupidity and mostly sober, had a few hits of weed and about four shots, but she can handle alcohol pretty well so you aren't too worried.
~ As for you, you stay near Velvette's side, watching it all burn. you don't usually leave her side
~ Not that you need to though, Velvette is pretty much anything you'll ever need <3
~ She gifted you a collar once and she gets all pissy at you when you take it off, you don't normally use it during sex but there are a few occasions.
~ The collar is purple and red with a silver lining, it's kinda tight around your neck but, whatever makes Velvette happy I suppose
~ She hosts Christmas parties too, they're a bit more chill because it's less people but Val is drinking the entire bottle of eggnog, vox is asleep on the couch with an ugly Christmas sweater he was forced to put on (I hc him not liking Christmas too much. (request vox headcanons pls) And Velvette's giving people incredibly stupid gifts for the gift exchange.
~ during her breaks she usually eats lunch, and bitches about her day (Mainly just Val and Vox) while you sit in between/on her thighs
~ As for drawing ideas, I like the idea of Velvette painting your nails all these pretty colors :3
~Another idea I like is just velvette pulling the most sadistic pranks on val, bc let's be real he deserves it (as for what the prank is idk)
~ Also istg I'd pay to see art of the Halloween party mentioned earlier (on a side note, I love your art it's really good omfg 😭)
(Word count: 517)
Had a lotta fun doing this, hope you enjoyed too!
-xoxo, Ari

When it had first been announced that Heather was the new manager of the Hawkins Community Pool, Billy had been excited and proud. She put in a lot of hard work, and actually gave a shit about the safety of their patrons, unlike their previous manager, Kevin, who spent all of his time avoiding work and getting high in the storage shed out back.
That excitement had last all of about a week, before she started actually enforcing the rules. Right now, she had him in her office, which was really just a rickety desk shoved in the corner of the equipment room. She’d taped a rectangle around the area to show the parameters. Billy rolled his eyes every time he saw it.
“This is your third one this week, Hargrove. If you don’t stop it, I’m going to write you up and send you home.” She said, folding her hands on the top of the desk and giving him a scathing look.
Billy could feel his face heating up. “It’s not my fault, Heather! I can’t help what my body does!”
“You may not be able to help it, but your little boyfriend can help dressing like a whore in your workplace!”
Billy had no retort for that. While he did object to Heather calling Steve a whore, or saying that he dressed like one, or whatever, Billy couldn’t deny that Steve’s outfits were starting to veer into what one might call publicly indecent territory.
His latest new purchase, a tiny pair of aqua short shorts that if Billy had to guess, he’d say had a one inch inseam, had been driving him wild.
Steve would camp out in the mornings that Billy worked on a pool lounger, ass up and on display, and he’d lay there until Billy couldn’t ignore the temptation anymore, making his way over to ask if Steve needed help applying sunscreen to his back.
And ok, maybe his fingers had dipped below the waistband of Steve’s shorts a couple times, in full view of the pool patrons, and maybe he’d had to sit in Heather’s “office” until he’d cooled down, but it was innocent fun, right?
The citation she wrote him for having a public erection two days later said otherwise. Word made its way around the staff quickly, until Billy was being called Boner Boy by lunch. Heather didn’t even have to send him home, he clocked out early, at 2, feigning heat stroke.
But the docked pay was worth it to finally get his hands all the way down Steve’s shorts, on the deck of his own private pool later that afternoon.

The tangled alenoah AU actually makes tons of sense
Let's start with Flinn Rider or Eugene.
Alejandro and Eugene have the SAME PERSONALITY. They will use people often, but it is also easily tricked himself. Uses flirtation to get what he wants (bonus cuz it did not work on Rapunzel and def would not work on Noah) and his character arc a has alot to do with his name (not in the same context but I digress). Both are ok with singing to get what he wants, both like money a lot, and both change that when they meet their partner (cannon partner in Alejandros case).
Also, they are both extremely smart but also just silly little guys. From Alejandro, making a puppet of himself to Eugene fighting with a horse like it's a person to get the crown back. They have the accusational sarcastic whip, like Alejandro teasing Heather by calling her Mrs. Alejandro and Eugene joked with Rapunzel by lying that she begged him to marry her. Convince me that's not the same vibe, is it not?
Now when it comes to Rapunzel, we hit a brick wall.
Because Noah and Rapunzels personalities are miles different, but we do see lots of time we're she very intelligent and hard-headed, which are words you could describe Noah with. But for the majority of the movie, she's up and dancing around smiling and taking in this new world. We can't say if Noah would be the same because, obviously, that's never happened to him.
Though Noah's not so static all the time, in RR we see have a lot of mushy emotions and easily saving Emma from DEATH and stating something after, implying that if it was anyone else he probably wouldn't have. There are scenes where Rapunzel acts on life-threatening situations with a quickness because Eugene's in danger shows a connection. And I wouldn't say it's a stretch, bc if it's and -ALENOAH- AU,,,, then of course he going the like Alejandro in the AU???
Plus, Rapunzel was fully willing to sacrifice herself for Eugene, something Noah's hopless romantic ass would do. Also, Rapunzel likes books, and she has moments that are on the spott BANGER lines (Ex., "Did I mumble, mother?" ) , like Noah. And, in that one scene where Rapunzel is all mushy to Maximus ( the white horse) while degrading Eugene,, WAS SO ALENOAH CODED... and, yes, it's more fandom. But in like 3/4 of Alenoah fics, Noah is having trouble trusting Alejandro, like Rapunzel does with Eugene. ( The last one is a stretch, and I realize that)
If you have other opinions or you feel I messed a point, just tell me.

Hello! I just want ya to know that u are my favorite writer for tdi in all honesty. I love how thought out your work is and how detailed it is. I saw that you wrote for Cody If so, could you possibly write a thing about how they would act if the reader was Chris’s favorite intern, and would sneak free gifts to help them in challenges (not that big just little small things) like a sweater for when they are somewhere cold, or a cookie if chefs cooking was bad. Could they also be confident and funny? (Strong reader supremacy).
I know you have a lot on your plate, it’s ok to deny or take as long as you need. Feel free to use this idea for other charecters :)

I love this gif
☣ Aw that's so sweet to hear, tysm!! I never thought anyone would enjoy my writing so much so that's really lovely to hear 🫶 I try my best to write well thought out stuff bc I honestly enjoy thinking about it lol

Cody really likes being around you.
You emit energy that just gives him that daily boost.
Whether it's your confidence and lightheartedness or a good joke, he usually has a smile while hanging around you.
He also likes to join in on playing the comedian with you if he feels creative, so you're a fun duo!
He's curious why Chris likes you so much.
I mean, he can see why, you're like, the best person ever to be around, (in his opinion) but still.
And you're kind enough to share anything extra with him!
You got him by a surprise when it first happened, as at the time you were friendly, but only briefly spoke to each other.
Next on the trip list was "Yukon". You knew it was gonna be cold. But being the TV host's favorite intern wasn't that bad, you knew you were probably gonna get decent clothing. As you expected, the temperature was freezing. But of course, Chris couldn't be cold, so he got himself a cozy and stylish jacket. You and Chef also got the blessing of getting something warm to wear, unlike the rest of the campers. You felt some hope after Chris announced that he ordered the jackets for the others, but it quickly washed away when you heard his response to Heather that "they should arrive in six to eight weeks". You sighed, but ultimately you were helpless to do anything. You took a liking to Cody, he was fun to be around and you thought his "tough man" was both entertaining and kinda sweet. I mean, at least he tried, right? You started talking in the short moments when you both had a break and a chance to interact with someone in between the challenges. You never went out of your way to help anyone as it was technically cheating, but you felt like you had to do something when you saw Cody freezing after he fell into the cold water and Sierra had to rescue him. You saw her throw him on the land from the floating ice block, thinking he's somewhat safe now, until you heard the abrupt sound of him hitting the nearby mountains which made you cringe from the secondhand pain. Once the camera focused on the other contestants trying to make it through the challenge, you sneakily approached Cody, who was visibly shaking while laying on his back and processing what just happened. "Oof- Dude, you alright?" You hovered above him with a concerned look on your face. "Y-Y/N?" He managed to stutter out while the cold tried to shut up him up. You offered him a hand so he could get up, to which he accepted with a shaking grip. Without a word, you gave him the only thing you had on you, your jacket. "T-That's for me?" He asked, a bit in disbelief for your kind act. "Of course, I can't let you freeze to death." You quickly explained with a smile on your face. "But what about you?" He questioned once more, seeing as you had nothing else to put on. "Hey, I haven't fallen into the freezing water, did I?" You pointed out, although you appreciated him worrying about you as well. "R-Right." He flashed a shaky smile and extended his hand as you passed him the clothing item. "T-Thank you." He tried to keep his teeth from grinding, which stopped as soon as he put it on. The cold was still biting your ass, but at least you felt good knowing he wasn't about to die anymore. Cody started to feel a bit awkward seeing you start to shake, though. "Hey- now that you're the one being cold, I feel kinda selfish here." He admitted, halfly-joking. You took a second before responding. "Well- There's always an option with huddling for warmth" You responded, also halfly-serious. You didn't mind close contact and free warmth, so you hoped Cody wouldn't either. "Unless you got cold feet." You heard a slight chuckle come out of his lips after your words. "Okay. But only to break the ice." He put on a grin which showed his goofy tooth gap. He was pleasantly surprised with the amount of casualness from you, but also a bit lost on how to act, so he resorted to lightning up the mood as well. You reciprocated the giggle and stepped closer, feeling his body against yours. He hesitated a little, but finally embraced you into his arms. "Don't let Sierra see you though, you might make some enemies with her after that." He warned you only slightly serious about it.
Cody was far more casual and friendly with you after that one kind gesture.
And with time, he began to see you as legit one of the closest people he got to meet on the show.
But the thing that made him enamored in you was when you got to his heart through his stomach.
You knew that the teams had to endure Chef's horrible cooking each time they lost, and you were glad when you didn't have to worry about the food being a probable cause of your death when Chris gave you your share of the meals. So, naturally you also wanted to grant that opportunity to your close acquaintance as well. Per usual, you approached Cody after you had a moment to yourself. "Hey Codemeister, what's up?" He turned his head towards you as he heard the familiar tone of your voice. "Y/N, hey!" His face lighted up and he straightened his back to properly look at you while sitting on the crappy, wooden seat, "Had your dinner already?" You asked casually, sitting next to him. "If that's what you call it- yeah." He cringed at the economy class food. "Why?" "Well, I just had this cookie that i conveniently kept for you, so..." You slightly teased as your hand slowly got the packaged, delicious goods out of your pocket. "What, dude, no way!" He gasped slightly as he saw the cookie in it's glory. "It's mine?" "Yeah." You nodded with a smile, already happy about his excited reaction. "You're amazing!" He attacked you with a hug without thinking twice. You felt Sierra staring daggers at you.

The human researchers are canon to better bones now! Yes! Also tunnelers are coming back? How?
BUCKLE UP because Heathertail, Breezepelt, and Brushblaze are going to bring it back. This is how they're going to save a bunch of cats from The Kin.
Its resurrection is going to begin with Heatherpaw meeting Hollypaw in the tunnels. She's drawn to the old stories, to how Heatherstar 'was forced to' sacrifice tunnelling to focus their efforts on ShadowClan. It was curiosity.
I want to write the Po3 Apprentice Generation as generally being really tightly knit, so Heather, Breeze, and Hare would putz around and dig their own in places where they wouldn't be found, so they could get away from everyone. Unfortunately, they were digging with no knowledge, so one day a tunnel collapsed on Harepaw
Lucky for them, Brush was just close enough to hear them and came bolting. He's HUGE for a WindClan cat, and dug him out in a flash. He chewed the group out, but they made him promise to not tell Onestar
Brushblaze: "ok what's this. Why not?"
Heather: "If he knows we're using and digging tunnels he'll do something stupid :("
Brush: "ok. You got me there. But I can't let you dig dangerous holes. Ill have a look."
Brushblaze's role in BloodClan was as a SOLVER. It was a job related to problem solving and critical thinking. He couldn't replace the generations of specialized knowledge of dirt, beams, and depth gauging that were lost when Heatherstar killed the ancient practice... but, he can look at a hole and understand,
"There's a lot of dirt on the top of the hole and it's only held up by some weak dirt below it. Breezepaw, fetch some sticks. Make sure they are as tall as you standing plus the tip of your ears."
The tunnels they make aren't as deep nor as impressive as the ancient ones. They can't go far underground or be used for hunting; but they were for fun for a long time. Something the three apprentices had, plus Brushblaze, and they passed it to their apprentices as well.
In AVoS, Harespring watched his best friends join the Kin as he was deputy. Onestar was breaking down and commanding isolation, but Harestar knew they were going to need help.
The specifics will get worked out over time, but tunneling and memories of those apprentice days will be important to the escape in that arc.

(If you feel like a prompt...) Right Hand was hit by the Good/Evil Ray, and has suddenly turned Good. No longer drawn to a life of crime, they now hope to put their long-neglected teaching degree to good use! Villain is trying to be supportive of this sudden career change, but thinks that if their Right Hand MUST become a Substitute Teacher, they could at LEAST avoid the high school that Sidekick attends!
This gave me such domestic vibes, I had to
***
Villain tapped their thumbs idly on the steering wheel, eyeing the stream of ill-mannered youth flooding the high school's front doors. They'd never been a huge fan of children, too wild, too unpredictable, too breakable. Righthand was though, even before this whole mess happened they'd had an eternal soft spot for the messy brats. If this was what they wanted to do next, Villain should accept it, but they just couldn't shake the worry that they should be doing something else. Working to build a new ray, or locating the original, or holding Hero responsible for their ethically questionable actions.
"You know we could just hit you with it again," Villain murmured. They'd been holding it in for a while now as Righthand prepared to return to their old vocation, but now, as it all became real, it slipped past their defenses and their lips. "Turn things back to normal."
"Yes..." Righthand said, also watching the kids leeching across the parking lot, though maybe with a touch more nerves than Villain. "But doesn't it feel wrong? I don't even know what 'normal' is anymore." Righthand glanced over, deep brown eyes making brief contact with the criminal's before quickly averting out the window again. "It's just...I don't feel... I don't feel any different. I'm still me, aren't I? I just don't feel so much hate anymore. And honestly, it's a relief. That feeling was consuming, dictating, and now...I can just do what I want."
"And this is what you want?" Villain pressed.
"I mean...yes? At least it was for a big portion of my life. Before..."
"Before me."
Righthand rested their hand over Villain's clenched knuckles. "It wasn't just you. I wanted to join."
"But now?" Villain couldn't even look at their second. Their friend. Their partner. Their love. They were too scared of what sort of look they might be giving back.
"But now I want to do this." Righthand took them gently by the chin, turning their face toward them and staring them firmly in the eyes. "And that does not in any way change this."
Villain searched their face for any hints of falsehood, any pity, but their gaze was just as intense and coldly determined as it had always been. They really weren't a different person, were they?
Villain swallowed. "Ok."
Righthand smiled, stroking their thumb down Villain's cheek before abruptly releasing them. "I should probably get going, school starts in 15 minutes. Don't want to be late to class on my first day."
"Don't forget your lunch." Villain craned through the gap in the seats and plucked a blue lunch bag from the backseat.
"Thank you, lovie." They accepted the bag and pecked Villain on the lips before swinging the door open to the icy winter air. "I'll see you in a few hours."
“Don’t let the little monsters walk all over you.”
Righthand glanced over their shoulder. “I think I have enough experience keeping people in line."
Then they were gone, walking across the lot with the rest of the masses.
Villain's eyes trailed them all the way up to the sidewalk. Until a mass of loose curls and a patched heather hoodie drew their attention elsewhere. Heroes didn't exactly announce their identities to the world, but they also barely used more than an eyemask to hide their faces. Villain would recognize that little tag-along Sidekick anywhere.
Of all the schools in the city for Righthand to be called into, it had to be this one.
The kid must have noticed Righthand at about the same time Villain noticed them because they suddenly stopped in their tracks. They immediately began scanning the parking lot, eyes narrowed, until they landed on Villain's car. Their arm rose, seemingly involuntarily, into a pointed finger.
Villain waved.
Sidekick stepped forward and then back again, glancing around at their fellow students with a grimace. They quickly slipped out their phone and began rabidly texting something. Probably a heads up to Hero that two villains were hanging around a school building.
Sorry, kiddo, nothing illegal about dropping someone off for work.
As Righthand had disappeared into the building, Villain rolled down their car window and leaned out. “Hey!”
Sidekick’s head shot up.
“You be nice to them, you hear? I better not catch wind of any backtalk or misbehavior!”
Sidekick gritted their teeth and shot as rather juvenile glare in their direction before shoving their phone back in their pocket and whirling toward the school doors.
That little rat better not say anything to the school, not that they could do much to prove anything, not with a pair of master criminals behind their false identity, but Righthand didn’t need any rumors circling around when they were just getting settled.
However, that aside, Villain couldn’t wait to see how this all played out.

7 minutes in hell, or is it heaven? Part 6
-Please Pick Up-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Warnings: eventual smut, fluff, and lots of angst. Billy is an extremely soft boyfriend to y/n
Love confession time from both sides!!!!!
In the Y/n pov, there are some quotes from some of my poetry work, so please enjoy and see how i'm such a hopeless romantic.
Also, it is set several weeks later from the last chapter, so there has been major secret friendship development. Felt if I wrote all that. It would have dragged.
~~~~~~~~~~~
*Billy's POV*
The lawn was trashed with empty kegs and red solo cups, toilet paper littered the trees and house, the smell of sweat, alcohol, weed and throw up was a stale scent everywhere I went while loud music seeps through every corner of the rooms.
Drunken students everywhere, some who I had never seen before making out with each other, random teenagers picking fights with each in the backyard and in the living room. I scoff.
I didn't want to be here. I would rather be with Y/n. Parties didn't feel the same after the last party with her, and her not being here it was boring.
Mumbling in disgust, I avoided people as I best I could, especially escaping from girls that try to throw themselves at me. While I was in thought, a junior bumps into me.
"Watch where you are going, you little shit," I angrily say as I grab his collar, lifting him off the ground with ease.
"S-s- sorry man, I didn't see you there." He says with fear in his eyes.
"Whoa now, Billy, give the loser a break and take a swig of this stuff that Heather brought." Tommy says as he come stumbling through the living room.
"Just don't do it again, nerd." I release him, and he fell to the floor.
"S-sorry again." He said as he ran for his life.
"Tommy, I'm gonna head out, I'm tired of this shit show." I say.
"Dude, you're drunk. You can't drive." He states.
"Fuck off I'll be fine I've done it before remember?" That was the last thing I say to him before I slam the front door.
The drive was longer than I thought. Maybe I should have sobered up some. I pulled to the side, noticing a payphone on the side of the road.
I was thinking about calling Tommy to come pick me up, but he was more inxoticated than I was, so I rang the next best person.
*RINGING*
"Hello?" A tired female voice spoke.
"I'm giving you a night call to tell you how I feel."
"Billy, are you drunk? What's wrong are you ok?" Her voice was filled with concern.
I shook my head like she could see it.
" Yes, I'm drunk, and no, I'm not ok, I have to tell you something that you don't want to hear.... I wanna be more than friends."
"Hargrove, where are you? Do you need me to pick you up? She asks.
"I'm at the old warehouse, but please let me get this out." I plead.
A small "ok" was only said.
"I need your hands on my body, I need your eyes only on me, I need your smell to engulf my senses, I need your lips on mine. I need to be with you physically and mentally. You're my breath. you're my lifeline in this miserable world. I swear my fucked up thoughts get calm when you stand by me. I feel your eyes on me all the time. The feeling always goes down my spin like electricity. Please tell me you will be mine. Tell me are more than overthinking stolen glances." I finally breathe.
*silence*
"We both know I'm just scared to really date you, but you have me mesmerized. I want to be yours." Was the last thing she said before I heard the dial tone.
*Y/N POV*
Hanging up, I run out of my room, almost killing myself on the stairs. Grabbing my dad's spare Ford Escort keys, I'll thank him later, but now is not the time.
"Love can sometimes be painful. Still, it was the only thing I had ever known when it came to him. All my love I had for him, the only person who gave me butterflies was him. Day and night, all I could think about was him. The only person I couldn't imagine my life without..... was forever him." I think to myself as tire screeched on asphalt.
"Please still be there, I'm going." I plead.
Turning the corner, i saw his Camaro still there. He was sitting on his hood with his head down.
"Thank god" I say.
Billy's head whipping up upon hearing my car, screeching to a stop. His eyes were wide when I tackle him to the ground. "Hmpf," he weezed.
Giggling a "sorry" while placing my thighs around his hips. We are lying in the soft grass.
"William Hargrove, let me explain... your hair, muscles, and body were never that I fell for you harder than before. Sure, they helped, but it was your personality that you've shown me these several weeks. The personality that lies beneath these ocean blue eyes, your captivating voice that melts my insides. The life behind your smile was the reason I fell in love with you all over again. It's like I'm walking into heaven when I see you." I say, breathing heavy.
"I love you, you asshole." I laugh.
Staring up at me, his grip on my thighs with his large hands tightened slightly with my words.
"I love you too, baby girl." His voice breathy as he leans up to capture my lips with his. The kiss was soft but slightly possessive.
"Will you be my girlfriend?" He officially asks.
Nodden my head shyly "yes"
"Use your words, princess." He smirks.
"Yes, I would love to be your girlfriend." I say.
He captures my lips once more, feeling the love pour into the kiss leaves me lightheaded.
As I got off of him I stuck my hand out for him to take. "Let's get you into bed, baby"
"Ugh, don't look at me like that, you idiot, you know what I mean." I scoff.
"Not my fault you look so good right now in your sleep clothes." He laughs as he heads to my car.
"He's unbelievable." I thought following behind him.
ok so I see where you're coming from. Aleheather and Alenoah are both enemies-to-lovers ships in which a character sees past Alejandro's facade. Duncney and Gwourtney are both like... bad kid x good girl. But the thing is, you're looking at the character's as their stereotypes and dynamics rather than their relations in canon? Like:
Aleheather is canon. It has a lot of good chemistry throughout the season. The season revolves around this ship and they actually interact romantically in canon. Alenoah has a similar potential (basically the plot of Slippery Slopes), but is very different. They don't have chemistry in canon, Noah honestly just knows Alejandro is manipulating people and that's all he has in common with Heather. Other than being an asshole. Noah has like, barely ANY screentime actively about his and Alejandro's relationship except for in I See London, where he's just talking shit. And still, if you replace Heather with Noah, the dynamics are still different. Noah and Heather are different people.
Duncney is canon too, at least in island. Duncan and Courtney have a lot of screen time together. Duncan teaches Courtney how to actually be a rebel and have fun. This one honestly makes even less sense than your Aleheather/Alenoah one, because the ENTIRE POINT of Gwourtney is that they are friends, have a mutual hate for Duncan after breaking up with him, and Gwen is trying her best to be friends with Courtney even though she hates her. And it WORKS. Duncney was nothing like that, Duncney was just a really good relationship in island. Plus, Duncan and Gwen are completely different people they're not really alike. Duncan is a wannabe punk who gets into trouble and Gwen is a goth girl with hella determination.
Like, there's nothing wrong with these ships of course. There's nothing wrong with liking ships for their dynamics. We should never ship hate. People who hates on ships that aren't proships or toxic are asses. But saying Aleheather and Alenoah are the same is just wrong? Same with Duncney and Gwourtney. They are not the same.
SHIPS ARE NOT LIMITED TO THEIR DYNAMICS! People a lot of times like ships because they canonically have chemistry, or canonically dated. There's nothing wrong with only liking the canon ships, as long as you don't hate on the other ones. It's YOUR life. And if you want to ship things for their dynamics? GO THE FUCK AHEAD! It's YOUR life.
My point is, these ships aren't the same. I just don't understand what you're saying.
Good Things In 2023
It’s that time of year again! Time to remember all the good things that happened in 2023. I’ve done this since 2017, and highly recommend doing this as a fun way to reflect (and to have something for future reference when you are feeling Down.)
woof ok here we go
PERSONAL
I visited two countries I haven't been to before: the Netherlands and Iceland!
The Netherlands: mostly Amsterdam but did also pop down to The Hague for a day. Did the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, the Bloemenmarkt, a canal boat tour, the Royal Palace, the Mauritshuis.
Iceland: I was there for less than 48 hours but I saw THE NORTHERN LIGHTS!!!! they were subtler than I expected but so cool. also did the Perlan Museum and a Lava Show, which ruled.
Related: I turned 30 this year!
My dear friend Sam came to visit me in Dublin in June! The highlight of her visit was going with her to see Hozier at Malahide Castle.
Speaking of which, Hozier dropped UNREAL UNEARTH which isn't personal, per se, but is very personal to me
My sister visited me in November! We squeezed a lot in her time here, but highlights were Glendalough, the Hill of Tara, and the Galway Christmas Market.
A few aunts went on a trip to Ireland this fall and I joined them for a bit up in Donegal, as well as a day trip to Derry, which I'd not been to before.
Completely fucking forgot about this but I did write a 158k word long ROGUE ONE / FRINGE AU, ENDLESS FORMS MOST BEAUTIFUL. it was a real fuckin bitch to finish, let me tell you that
I got really into MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE over the summer (don't ask) and wrote a couple short pieces inspired by the most recent movie, DEAD RECKONING - PART ONE: LADY LAZARUS and WORTHY THE NAME OF SIR KNIGHT.
I jumped back on my bullshit in October and wrote a long, extended epilogue to my BINARY STAR SYSTEMS trilogy: TWO DESERTS. the way the series ended was always correct and good but it was fun to write this extended epilogue focusing on the fallout, the question of what it's like to live past the end of your myth.
Anything bolded below is something I particularly enjoyed and recommend.
"Eurydice" by Adrienne Su
"What Happens to a School Shooter's Sister?" by Jennifer Gonnerman for The New Yorker. A high school student murders his parents and several students at his school, and his sister is left to pick up the pieces. really powerful story on unconditional love.
"Fuck you, I don't know?"
Werner Herzog pronounces Eeyore.
this story about Jimmy Buffett I loved
"She Wasn't Able to Get an Abortion. Now She's A Mom. Soon She'll Start Seventh Grade" by Charlotte Alter for Time. the cruelty is the point.
had a pilot named Ken yesterday and he introduced himself by saying his job is plane
this obituary for the great Sinéad O'Connor.
Kiké Hernandez returned to the Dodgers!
this behind the scenes video from the filming of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING - PART ONE where Tom Cruise's co-stars watch him drive a motorcycle off a cliff.
"How Christopher Nolan Learned to Stop Worrying and Love AI" by Maria Streshinsky for Wired. good interview with Nolan, one of my favorite filmmakers / artists. (anyone who's ever read anything I've written is probably like yes, this is very obvious.)
"The Perils and Promises of Penis-Enlargement Surgery" by Ava Kofman for The New Yorker. an absolutely BONKERS but super important piece!
a new ending to RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, lmao
"The Return of Ryan Gosling" by Zach Baron for GQ. really great profile writing going on here!
"LOST Illusions: The Untold Story of the Hit Show's Poisonous Culture" by Maureen Ryan for Vanity Fair. LOST is one of my favorite shows and has been super influential on my work. (again, this is probably very obvious). this piece is devastating in how it reveals the terrible racism and sexism behind the scenes of a show I have loved. important.
Henry Kissinger died this year (GOOD THINGS BABYYY) and this piece by Nick Turse, which came out in May, is a good explainer on why that's such good news: "Kissinger's Killing Fields".
"Talking With 'Swiftie Dads' at a Taylor Swift Concert" by Eileen Cartter for GQ. I thought this was very sweet.
The New York Times had an interactive feature about Connie Chung and her impact on young Chinese-American women, particularly the ones named after her. I love this video of her meeting some of them.
"Will A.I. Become the New McKinsey?" by Ted Chiang for The New Yorker. Chiang is best known as the writer of STORY OF YOUR LIFE which was adapted into ARRIVAL, so it's wise to listen to him when it comes to tech and science.
Loved this speech Mark Hamill gave about Carrie Fisher at her Hollywood Walk of Fame induction ceremony.
Accents white people can still do.
this absolutely incredible slapstick esque unintentional comedy scene.
As always, tagging anyone who’d like to do this!
Tumblr media
I'm literally only making this so I can feel just a slight bit of order in my life
This is my YouTube channel where I try to post some stuff sometimes
Yeah its just the same as here but with way less stuff. BUT I SWEAR I'm working on it
This is my cohost! which is essentially my backup plan for if I leave tumblr.
Not much there yet since I'm still getting used to it
Hmm, I have an AO3 account I guess, but I haven't actually posted anything on it yet. Still figuring out how to customise it and stuff. Same name as all my other stuff: Bogos_Bint3d✨️
I like a lot of things, but I'd say the things that really have me in chokehold are: Undertale/Deltarune, Infinity Train, Ena, Spider-Man (just in general, but mostly spiderverse specifically), Murder Most Unladylike, Heathers, Sonic a little bit, Gorillaz, Sexyman Descendants (does that even count? Whatever I like it). So if you ever want to talk about these things know I would ABSOLUTELY love to. I especially love finding out new things about them so if you know something about these I don't I will eat that UP. So yeah you can follow if you're interested in any of these. I just KNOW there's a ton I'm missing but there's not really anything I can do about that
I am not in any way normal about Undyne from Undertale so I guess if you want to see me talk about her constantly that's a good reason to follow
I sometimes spam reblog if I see something that really makes me feel stuff I am so sorry about that so you might not want to follow if you don't like it
I tag my own art with #bogos I binted (hehe, get it? Photos I printed, bogos I binted... no? Yeah ok)
I tend to tag undertale art with #hotland art club, but I mostly only tag my own art. If I remember tho I'll tag other utdr art,, just don't count on it
Sometimes I tag art with Miles, Gwen, Hobie, and Pavitr as #these four are literally the besties ever, which I haven't actually done in a long time but, hey! Never know when I will again!
I tag my queued posts with #despite everything, its still queue. Yes I know the "its" should grammatically be "it's". No I don't have the energy to change it
🫨-> cool comma that will work normally in post tags: ‚ <-?! Yep! That comma WILL work if you use it in tags, it's very cool! I don't know why I mentioned that... I like it!
Well that's all there really is to me... I know there's stuff I'm forgetting to add but there's literally nothing I can do about that I'll just fix it later or whatever
Houses on Berk
OK so I've been wanting to do a series of posts, of sorts, that outlines what we canonically know about each house of Berk, and then go into my own headcanons for how houses and families work.
This is basically going to be an overview post, going over various rites of passage within Berk and what houses there canonically are. This is really for anyone who wants to use it as I'll be adding links to all these posts to the fanwiki.
I'll be putting everything under the cut to make sure it doesn't clog up anyone's dash :)
What known houses are there?
Stated as houses we have:
House Haddock - Wiki Link - Post Link
House Hofferson - Wiki Link - Post Link
House Ingerman - Wiki Link - Post Link
House Jorgenson - Wiki Link - Post Link
House Thorston - Wiki Link - Post Link
House Larson - Wiki Link - Post Link
To my understanding, house names are surnames and you would might move houses if you got married when you changed your name. The only other mentioned surname I can find for a character placed on Berk is Hardacre which is in reference to a character who appears once in the comics. Because of this, I like to include House Hardacre as another house when I want to and sometimes put some other named characters in it [Wiki Link - Post Link].
I do have a few other houses that are entirely headcanon:
House Witchwood - Gothi's House - Post Link
House Broksen - Gobber's House - Post Link
House Eretson - Eret's House - Post Link
House Hartwell - Valka's House Pre-Marriage - Post Link
And then some honorary, non-Berk houses, as I am a firm believer in the house system being widely used throughout the archipelago:
House Grimborn - Wiki Link - Post Link
House Beserk - Dagur and Heather's House - Post Link
Why do some people use their house as a surname and some people don't?
There are going to be Doylist explanations for why, I'm sure, but here's my Watsonian one (with a healthy dose of headcanon):
So in the case of a lot of minor characters, they do have surnames, we just don't ever hear about them because the characters are so minor it doesn't matter.
I'd say the most likely explanation is that epithets are considered more important than surnames. Surnames (or house names) are sort of a placeholder for a future epithet [think Phlegma the Fierce] or title [think Silent Sven]. I imagine that if someone overlapped with names and epithets/titles, you would stick of House X on the end.
I don't necessarily think that this House system is a Berk only system, mostly because my idea of the History of Berk (and my film variants of Hiccup I and II).
What is the purpose of a House?
Politics, mostly. The heads of each of the houses will have a say at Berk's meetings - such as the one we saw in the Great Hall in the first film, discussing the search for the nest - and would have priority to speak over the rest of the people at the meeting.
If your house is better beloved and more powerful (have control over resources, land, etc.) then you are going to be able to speak more freely at these sorts of things as no-one wants to be the person who spoke over you.
It's also a way for the chief to maintain order. It's far easier for them to have about thirty/forty people (I haven't yet decided what number of houses is reasonable) to keep order within their own house and the different branches.
Inter-house marriages would probably not be entirely weird either as houses are like very widely spread. After four hundred years, you're going to end up with a house that has a lot of branches that are really not so genetically similar anymore (the exception to this is probably the Thorston's which I'll get into in that post).
I don't like to think about it too much because it is a little bit weird but there doesn't seem to be much immigration and emmigration on Berk, so I'm just imagining that this is just a thing that happened and felt it was probably worth mentioning.
Houses also tend to have traditional roles within them beyond being a warrior (you would have the warriors of the house and also those going for a more traditional role) - for example, the Hoffersons are traditionally tailors and work with fabric; the Jorgensons are hunters; the Ingermans are historians and bookkeepers; the Thorstons are devotees (devote themselves to the gods, although it tends to be different for each Thorston); etc, etc.
Rites of Passage
This is just a general section on Rites of Passage that may change between houses or may be consistent. I can think of four that have been mentioned in canon:
Naming
Coming of Age
Marriage
Funeral
My headcanons for this is that all rites of passage (apart from coming of age) can be done by the Chief, the Village Wise Woman and the Head of the house (or a proxy) of whoever is doing the rite of passage. There also appears to be a need for witnesses, since Gobber accompanied Agnut when she went to do the twins' coming of age.
Naming
Naming in the films and shows is shown to have been done by the chief (as in A Viking For Hire) and chosen by the parents (I believe it's mentioned throughout the show that parents had chosen names). A Viking For Hire also shows that the name the parents chose is more like a consideration for the person doing the Naming as Gobber decides to use a different name - not sure how appreciated that was.
This is so that there are options - if you are Stoick, you can't ask either the Chief or the Head of your house to do the naming as you are both, so you can then either have a proxy or have Gothi do it (my headcanon here is that Gothi named Hiccup using Prophecy because Stoick and Valka were struggling with a name).
It also means that you can have the ceremony as big or as small as you want - if the chief does the naming, it's probably going to happen in the Great Hall so there would be large crowds, but if the Village Wise Woman did it, it would be in her poky little hut up on the mountain so barely any people at all.
Coming of Age
I think there are two mentions of coming of age ceremonies in the shows - there's the Thorston Induction and there's Snotlout's own coming of age.
The Coming of Age is the one that is really house dependent and so my headcanon is that it can only be done by the head of the house or a proxy (but needs to be witnessed by the chief or the wise woman or another member assigned by them, hence Gobber coming with Agnut for the twins' initiation test).
I think it needs not be said that killing a bear at nine months is nigh on impossible for even the greatest of the Jorgensons, although their initiation is something similar (due to their whole hunting thing going on) but it's more like hunting a bear at thirteen which is a much more reasonable age to go bear hunting.
Each coming of age ceremony/rite of initiation really depends upon the historical context of their trade, and some houses are more about doing tasks to prove yourself and some are more symbolical welcoming you into the house once you turn into an adult in their eyes.
Weddings/Union Ceremonies
Weddings!! We all love them.
There are only two that we really see/hear about in any detail (that I can remember anyway) - the Hofferson/Jorgenson marriage that fell through, and the Hiccstrid marriage in the third film. Here is what I can gather from those:
There are ceremonial items for each house that are somehow used (think, the Jorgenson Axe) - I imagine that these are probably used in coming of age ceremonies as well as they're symbols of the house
Weddings can be political as there are things exchanged (think the hundreds of boars (???) Spitelout had) - possibly just a bride price but I like to believe that the Vikings exchange resources both ways and often the gifts are more from each house to the newly weds as they set up their new life
There are three parts to the actual ceremony - the Feast, the Vows/Union Words and the Dance. The Feast appears to be before the vows (or, at least, Fishlegs did it before the vow for shits and giggles) but I'm putting it after because it's Vikings, they probably feast well into the night. The Union words probably change between couples, the ones Fishlegs chose being very very old and traditional and newer ones involving a bit more participation from people in the Union. And the dance is just kinda some fun, I don't have much for that other than that Vikings are always up for a good party.
The Bride and Groom traditionally wear white or creams (at least pale colours, possibly using undyed fabric - I like the idea of undyed fabric as if it's to signify the start of something new)
There is a Berk Officiator - this one I take with a pinch of salt. I much prefer the idea of it being the chief, the wise woman or the head of the house that the married couple is joining that does the ceremony just because of stuff I've previously established, but I did create a Berk Officiator for the sole purpose of the Hiccstrid Accidental Marriage AU
Other marriage traditions change depending on what I'm writing but I usually take historical or quasi-historical influences for marriage headcanons here.
Funerals
And then, Funerals. We have a few examples of funerals - Stoick's being a big example, but also a few others. This is the only rite that I could find a wiki page for (as seen here).
Between each, the eulogies slightly differ which I imagine is due to each house having their own slightly different words. I also can't work out if the vikings of the HTTYD world only believe in Valhalla (and maybe Hel), or if we only see the funerals of people they consider fallen warriors.
Again, under normal circumstances, it's probably done by head of the house, chief, wise woman, etc - it's probably done by Gobber for Stoick because it's such a small funeral and Hiccup has literally just lost him.
Final Thoughts
So, this is the first post in what I'm hoping is going to be a series, we shall see if I manage to keep the momentum up. I have all the thoughts but getting them onto paper takes Time.
I'll be adding the links to posts when I make the posts and hopefully because this is under the readmore it should update even with reblogs.
And yeah! That's pretty much it - I might also make some history posts at some time in the future about Hiccup I and Hiccup II, and the Wilderwest and the Dragon Eye (and the tribe before the dragon hunters). If I do that I'll probably add some links for them down here.
