Letter from Maria to her friend Olga Voronova

"...There are lots of extra children there now [at the orphanage], such awfully sweet darlings. We gave them all presents and they were so happy with them and each one showed their nanny what they got. They are so appetizing. There are some really little ones there, some are only two weeks old. I love little children so awfully much, play with them and carry them in my arms. Do you love babies?"

In her photograph album, Maria pasted in many photos she took of the little children at the 'Nanny school' (orphanage) that she and her sisters often visited. Sadly, during WWI, the orphanages became even more full. The Romanov children visited several days a week, and cuddled and spoke to the children, and spoon fed them porridge.

Valentine's day (a wee bit late)

I imagine they were terrible gossips together, at parties or elsewhere, when they just got together head to head or side to side mumbling and watching others, gossiping.

Her dress is inspired by the dress of Lou de Laâge as Kitty (princess Katerina Shtcherbatsky) in the miniserie of Anna Karenina from 2013 (with Vittoria Pucini), the one at the party at the beginning, so 1870s ish period, going on 1880s. The whole concept, facial expression, the fan, is coming from a picture of Olga Smirnova and Jacopo Tissi in the ballet Orlando, by Christian Spuck, photo by Natalia Voronova (Talia ballet on instagram). Levi's clothes are a mix of comte Saint Germain, in Outlander, season 2, and Jamie's boots in season 3.

In addition to that, talking about being late I have some Lunar New Year, Imbolc (pagan holiday, 1st of february) arts and a lantern festival OS to publish. I've been pushing it off for a few days now... but I really want to at least put the Lantern festival art and OS out.

The daughters of Emperor Nicholas II, 1914 [supersized].

The four sisters were all very different. The eldest, Olga, was very intelligent and gay and had a heart of gold; but she was also rather timid, so that her sister Tatiana, who was much more sociable, was easier to get on with at first. Marie was kindness and unselfishness personified; but Anastasia was the most amusing; she was always full of mischief. "Anastasia is our family clown!" the Emperor once exclaimed, laughing, to my mother. All four of the girls were essentially Russian, and they suffered at the very idea of marrying outside their country. Each time there was a question of marrying a member of a foreign Royal house, Olga implored her parents to give no serious thought to it as she wanted to stay in Russia. They had an adoration of their parents, and each time I saw them I had the renewed feeling of being in a happy, friendly, very Russian family.

Hello! Of course! I'm going to split this into two parts: this part will be about Maria, and another post will be about Anastasia.

Here are some rare, lesser known quotes, about Maria Nikolaevna (or writings from Maria herself) that capture her personality well.

Letter from Olga to aunt Xenia - "1916 August 26th … Papa brings an attendant with him to dinner, and Mordvinov comes every evening and we torment and scare him. Letter from Maria to Olga Voronova: "Dec 29th 1914 …The other day we were at a Christmas party at Mama's nanny school. There are now many children of the reserves, so awfully sweet! We gave them all toys and they rejoiced in them, and each showed his nanny what he received. They are so appetising. Some are very small, some are even only two weeks old. I really love young children, and play with them, holding them in my arms. Do you like little children?"

Letter from Pierre Gilliard to Maria: "10 December 1916 …Be careful, Maria Nikolaevna, if you continue to tease me, I will avenge myself!!!!"

Letter from Olga to Nicholas II: "16 August [circa 1904] - Peterhof. Dear Papa …Maria went to sleep in the afternoon, and Anastasia crept under the mattress and slept there with Maria on top of her. When she got up we all laughed, and so did she." - Maylunas and Mironenko, A Lifelong Passion

Mama just got you telegram and told us that you saw the 21st Corps. Terribly happy for you and for them, that you have seen each other, were you there alone or with Alexei? Very lonesome [here] without you both. No noise upstairs, and Alexei’s rooms are empty and dark. Tell him that Pyotr Vasilievich wanders around his room and misses him. This morning we were at the infirmary. Mama too. After breakfast we received ensigns from the Nikolaevsky Cavalry School, of our regiments. They were dreadfully embarrassed, the poor boys. How is Uncle Pavel? Is he pleased to be with you? How is Baby, did he have breakfast with You or by himself? And in general, how is he? It’s so funny to think that the little one is by himself and with You. Today is a little warmer than usual. 10 [degrees] of warmth. This is wonderful. Tell Alexei to write to us sometimes. Just returned from Petrograd from the consecration of the infirmary at the Winter Palace. Grandmama was there and a lot of people. Everything was very well arranged. A lot of nurses. Only two that [we] knew, Sister P.A. Voronova and Olga Trubetskaya, Yuri’s daughter. I am looking forward to seeing you darling Papa, and Alexei. He writes to Mama so awfully sweetly. Some roads are covered with snow already and it is very cold. I will bring Ortipo with me. I imagine how she will be happy to see you. I am writing to you before Vsenoshnaya. 

Nastasia is sitting in the room nearby and strumming the balalaika, Maria is in another room [playing] the piano, and Olga is just lying around here and resting before church. We had to stand for so long today, all morning at the infirmary, then at Winter [Palace] at molebna, then walked around all the wards, and then walked around the warehouse and plus now vsenoshnaya. Goodbye, Papa darling. Tight, tight hug and kiss you and Alexei. May God keep You. Your Voznesenetz.”
