You found out that there was an universal rule for airports and train stations about five years ago: taxis were waiting for tourists like you. You moved to the front of the line, where a French guy was reading whatever on his smartphone, a cigarette on the other hand.
The sun was scorching as you stepped out of the airport in Marseille. The flight had been two hours long, barely long enough for you to keep your nerves in check, though you had to admit that you hadn’t been very successful at that. Your stomach was still swarming with a colony of bees and your hands were shaking like leaves when you finally set a foot in France. You had never been to Marseille, though you reckoned that the South of France had always been lovely every time you went there for holidays with Tom, but Marseille was a region that you hadn’t explored. You knew you didn’t have much time to visit, but you still wished you could fit in a bit of sightseeing at some point. You had managed to grab an afternoon off from work and Tom had kindly offered to pick you up from work to drive you to the Stansted airport, which, to be fair, had been a bit of a letdown. Not like the Marseille airport was any much better, truth be told.
You knew Charles wouldn’t be able to pick you up because he was deep in his racing Friday, full of free practices, media duties and other work in the garage. But you trusted the pass that he had mailed to you to open the door for you and you hoped you could make it to the track without too much hassle.
“Excuse me, parlez-vous anglais ?”
“It’s your lucky day,” He smiled.
“Do you take clients to go to the Paul Ricard track?”
“Pfew, that’s a long ride, Miss,” The driver exclaimed. “It’s gonna cost you a bunch, not gonna lie,” He grimaced. “Are you sure you want to take a taxi for that?”
“The quicker the better,” You nodded.
“Then hop on in,” He smiled.
He helped you load your weekend away bag in his boot and opened the backseat door for you so you could sit down. While he indicated the Paul Ricard track into his GPS, you checked your phone and allowed yourself to hop onto the airport wifi one last time to let Tom know you had landed safely. You had told your dad that you were going to the South of France for the weekend, but as he had assumed you were just getting on a girly weekend adventure with a few friends, you hadn’t really been able to tell him the truth. You had no idea why telling your dad you were seeing Charles felt like admitting you were doing something wrong. Because nothing in seeing Charles felt wrong, if you were honest. It was so right, in every way, that it could feel wrong, though. Like a too-good-to-be-true experience. Like something you didn’t completely deserve. But your instincts were usually good and you knew waiting to tell your dad was the right solution. You would tell him, at some point. You would tell your mother, as well. But for now, you had made Tom swear on secrecy and as you were clicking your seatbelt on, you smiled at the screen lighting up with a text from your best friend, telling you to have fun with your guy.
“So you’re going to the Grand Prix, I guess?” The taxi driver smiled in the rearview mirror.
“I am,” You smiled back.
“Where should I park? Visitors or teams?”
“Hmm, I guess teams?” You tentatively asked.
“Well, I hate to ask, but do you have the credentials that go with that? Because the gendarmes are going to stop us and ask for it at some point.”
“I think my pass is enough, let’s try and if it goes wrong, I’ll pay for the detour, don’t worry.”
Your monthly budget was crying in the back of your head, but you knew you were lucky to be able to go to a Grand Prix for free and to not have paid your flight tickets yourself. The least you could do was meet Charles halfway on the spending journey and pay an arm for the taxi. You made small talk with the driver for a bunch of the ride, not really letting him know that you were Charles’ guest. You did though confirm that he was your favorite driver, to which he only agreed, nodding and smiling.
“We have French drivers, don’t get me wrong, but there’s something about this guy, having lived right next to us, that feels right.”
Your heart glowed a little bit brighter, knowing he had such support, everywhere in the world, but especially close to his home. You talked about Ferrari’s struggles, about the heartbreak of Monaco, about what you predicted for this race and why you thought Red Bull could get it. You knew it would take some kind of miracle for Charles to win a race this year. Monaco was his big chance and it blew up right in his face. The car just didn’t work like he wanted it to and the team was struggling to find what they could do to make it work. Carlos Sainz was having just the same issues, so it’s not like it was a Charles problem, but more like a Ferrari problem. And it sucked, you knew it, but Charles was always positive and bright, trying to find the brighter side of it all. And most importantly, you were going to be able to see him again after a few weeks of late night facetimes and texts so numerous your thumbs were a bit sore.
The view outside the taxi was stunning, with a mix of hills and the sea that you could see from afar, at first. Then you started an ascension through a mountain-like road, bordered with pine trees and bathing in the golden light of the Sun. Your taxi had A/C but seeing you marvelling at the decor, the driver stopped the ventilation and opened your window, allowing you to take a big gulp of fresh air, smelling like trees and sunshine despite your mouth being behind your facemask still. The cicadas were blasting their lulling buzzing sound and you grinned at the scenery in front of you. You knew you weren’t going to be able to see much, so you took advantage of the journey to the track to make sure you had a couple of pictures to bring back home.
As planned by your driver, the police showed up on the road about two kilometres away from the track and stopped the car. You showed your pass to the police, to no avail. The road your taxi driver wanted to take was barred, with the exception of the cars that sported a certain sticker on the windshield and that were authorized to take it. Your driver apologized to you and promised to find the most effective way for you to get to the track, which actually meant dropping you on the visitors parking lot and having you walk for a solid thirty minutes under the scorching sun. Your bag was heavy on your shoulder but you knew Charles was not that far from you now, barely a couple of kilometres away, and the anticipation started growing back in your stomach, in rhythm with the cicadas and the cars you could hear racing already. The positive point of your hike was that you had had the intelligence of wearing sneakers and not open sandals, because judging by the amount of dust already accumulating on your feet, you would have looked like a cavewoman by the time you’d have made it to the garages.
The passes Charles gave you let you enter the general areas around the track after a quick check of your vaccinal pass and you smiled at the F1 panels and fans everywhere. You were finally back to a race and it felt like coming back to a magical place, even though you knew there was no one really magical on track.
You asked for help from a volunteer who accompanied you to the VIP entrance and made sure you were taken care of. You crossed the track twice, seeing the F1 cars roll past you until you caught a glimpse of Charles’ car zooming beneath your feet. You smiled on your own, the volunteer in front of you oblivious to your antics. Charles had no idea you were already on track. He was supposed to pick you up tonight from the airport, as you had planned first. You were lucky that the flight company let you change your flight without a hassle or asking you to pay for it, actually. For a very long time, seeing Charles back felt like a bit of a fever dream, but now, it was actually confirmed that he was here, close enough that you’d get to breathe in the rubber and gas scent in his hair, mixed with the sweat he undeniably would be wringing out of his fireproofs. You were brought back to Charles and Charles was brought back to you.
Another volunteer flashed the QR code on your pass and let you past the VIP entrance. You were forbidden to actually enter the pitlane, which was fair to you as they were driving now, but you were welcome to roam in the paddock as much as you’d like. You have no idea who to bother to get inside the Ferrari garage and you had no idea if you were even allowed to do so, even though your pass did state Scuderia Ferrari. So you walked around, smiled at the few familiar faces of journalists you’d been watching for years and that you never thought you’d cross paths with, ever. But here you were. Silly little old you. Standing in the paddock, with your weekend bag on your shoulder, trying to navigate this space you had no idea how it worked.
“Hey, are you lost?” A voice rang beside you.
“Hey, hmm, yeah, it appears so,” You grimaced.
“First day in the paddock on your own?” The girl smiled.
“Exactly,” You shrugged. “I thought I could do this but I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do or where I’m supposed to go.”
“Who are you with?” She inquired, raising a hand gently and asking you silently if she could turn your pass around.
You nodded and let her inspect your pass, looking exactly like the one she had around her neck. She whistled at the sight of your host team and nodded without saying anything else.
“I was going to grab some water and go back to the garage, I can walk you to theirs, if you want?”
“Are you sure I’m allowed to enter the garage?” You frowned.
“Absolutely. That pass states you’re allowed to and Ferrari’s garage is nice in the sense that the guest space is separate from the actual garage space. You won’t bother them, don’t worry. Come on, follow me.”
You had no idea who this girl was but her friendly behavior and simple clothing put you at ease immediately. She was clad in a pair of light skinny jeans and a baby blue linen shirt that was so oversized on her it should have looked ridiculous, but she had tucked it inside her jeans and had rolled the sleeves up to her elbows, making her look sophisticated but not too much. She looked like a normal girl, just like you.
“So who are you visiting? Boyfriend? Brother? Cousin?”
“I’m not really sure what we are, actually..?” You offered.
“I see.. A guy you started to see but you haven’t had the talk with, yet.”
“Exactly,” You laughed. “What about you?”
“Boyfriend,” She grinned, walking up to the Red Bull hospitality. “I’m gonna pop in real quick, grab a bottle of water. You want something?”
“Can I get anything?”
“Sure! They don’t really care, to be honest. Journalists come all the time to get coffees,” She shrugged.
“I guess I could use a bottle of water. I wasn’t expecting it to be this hot.”
“Gotcha,” She smiled.
She waltzed in with the ease and grace of someone who’d done that a lot in the past, or at least, way more than you did. You didn’t know if that was something you were actually witnessing or if you were just somewhat admirative of her, at this point. She was so nice to you, it immediately made you her fan or whatever. She came back with three bottles of cool water and a bunch of candy bags that she shared with you with a conspicuous grin.
“So this guy you’re visiting, is he a mechanic or a strategist?” She asked.
“He’s actually.. Driving?” You grimaced.
“Oh wow!” Her eyes bulged out. “You’re with Charles?!”
“I am,” You blushed, struggling with the cap of the bottle of water before she grabbed it and opened it for you. “Thank you for that.”
“It’s okay, I’ve had my fair share of weird bottles I couldn’t open either. Wow, I can’t believe Charles didn’t tell me he was bringing you.”
“You know Charles?”
“I do! I’ve known him since he was like ten or twelve,” She grinned. “I’m Pierre’s girlfriend,” She introduced herself. “Those two are besties, so we’re bound to spend time together,” She laughed. “For the sake of you being in on the joke, everybody calls me Queenie. Don’t ask, Pierre is weird sometimes.”
“Well, I’m Y/N,” You laughed.
“Nice to meet you and welcome to the circus,” She offered. “I’d shake your hand but if I’m caught doing that, they’ll throw me out. They’re a bit strict with the sanitary measures, which is normal but it’s getting a bit tiring, to be honest.”
Your new friend walked you to the Ferrari garage where she entered without a care in the world. She left you at the guest area and wished you a nice time, making sure to tell you that she’d grab your Instagram from Pierre so you could contact her if you needed anything. She made you promise to not hesitate if you were in need of a friend and you swore you’d ring her if troubles appeared. She left you there with your bottle water and candies, and off to the last thirty minutes of free practice you were.
At some point, Charles parked in the garage and the mechanics twinkled with the car a bit, but he didn’t get out and since you weren’t front row, you were quite sure he didn’t see you in his mirrors. He was focused on his car, on the feedback he was giving to the mechanics, on the different data displayed on the screens placed in front of him by a couple of engineers. When the twenty minute deadline appeared on the screens, the tyre blankets were lifted off and away your favorite guy zoomed, leaving you watching him through the screens instead of trying to catch a glimpse of him in his car. You observed him race with a glimmer in your eyes, wondering how the heck human beings could be wired to try and be as fast. You relished in the loud noises of the engines, of the yells of the crowd and the constant buzz of the garage. You smiled as Charles’ times lit up in green, then when he set up purple sectors at some point. You grinned behind your facemask when he slotted himself at the third position, even if it was just free practice and couldn’t mean much yet. But your heart glowed and you were so freaking happy for your guy and to be that close that you didn’t care that Hamilton and Alonso finally ended up above his times.
Charles was P5 and came back to the garage in an even busier team, with mechanics buzzing around like bees in a hive. The garage started to empty down and soon enough, only a handful of people were left in the guest area, leaving you closer to him than you’ve been before. You studied him getting up from the car and wiggling himself out of it, before he unfastened the little clasp of his helmet and slid it off his head, ripping his balaclava from his head soon after. He went straight to the workbench and slid his helmet on the shelf with his name on it, snapping his gloves off and putting them away in the helmet.
And then his eyes finally cleared of the racing fog they were basking in, and he saw you, standing in the guest area, waiting for him to be done.
The initial shock rapidly turned into happiness and a giant grin split his face in two, showing you the beautiful smile you loved so much. He didn’t say a word but lightly jogged around the desk separating you from the rest of the garage and up in his arms you were, before you could even comprehend it. Your feet left the ground as he squished you against his chest. For the first time in your life, you heard a smile. It was audible in his breath, in his heartbeat, in his voice when he finally talked to you. You didn’t have to see it to know it was there. You loved that.
“Hi,” You whispered.
“Hi,” He answered just as quietly. “What are you doing here? I thought I was supposed to pick you up from Marseille?”
“I managed to get my afternoon off and change my flight,” You smiled back in his neck. “Surprise?”
“The best one,” He laughed.
As soon as your feet touched the ground, his lips were on your forehead, making you hum with delight. How you missed that contact of his mouth on your skin.
“I still have work to do, I can’t get out before at least 8 pm,” He grimaced. “People are gonna leave soon, but you’re welcome to sit in the garage with us or to go to my room,” He suggested.
“I’d like to stay with you, if that’s okay,” You blushed. “I did take a plane to see you, you know..”
“I know and I’m thrilled you’re here. I missed you,” He confirmed, throwing his arms around your shoulders and bringing you back closer to his chest. “It’s not as nice without you.”
“I’ll go to your room when you’ll go to the brief, is that okay?”
“The brief, huh?” He teased. “Someone studied my schedule?”
“You do send a lot of texts when you’re in those,” You teased back.
“Guilty as charged,” He grinned.
“Where’s your facemask, dummy? Don’t want you to get in trouble.”
“See, that’s why I missed you. You keep me in check.”
You laughed at him and he took your hand to make you walk around the desk that kept the guests away from the mechanics. He grabbed his facemask from his trainer, Andrea, who he introduced you to quickly after. Andrea was a nice guy, you’d learn, who liked to tease Charles endlessly and who didn’t dare do the same to you yet. Though he was easy to joke with, you’d find out that until he was entirely sure he wouldn’t be hurtful without wanting to, he’d refrain from actually teasing you too. Charles sat you on a stool next to the strategists. He told you not to touch any paper, otherwise you’d both be yelled at, but that you were free roam around the garage if you wanted to. You stuck to the stool, though, because you were terrified you’d actually impede on a mechanic’s job or you’d break something in a careless incident. You sat there, with your little bag on your lap, your suitcase having been brought to Charles’ driver room by the same Ferrari assistant that brought you back to the garage in Monaco and who brightened up when you thanked him by his name, as if he wasn’t really believing you actually remembered him. You watched Charles work, fascinated by the amount of information he was able to digest, analyze and process, giving back his own notes. At some point, Charles slipped a notebook in your hands and a pen and you thought he wanted you to have something to do, but you realized, somewhat in horror, that he meant for you to write some notes of what you heard and what he said.
“Can you write that, please?” Charles would ask.
And you looked at him with a distraught glaze, not even understanding a word of what just had been discussed.
“Sure. How do you write it, actually?”
“I have to go to the briefing now, Babe,” Charles whispered in your neck as you were almost dozing off on your stool. “You should go back to my room, lie on the couch, get some rest while you can. This weekend is gonna be tiring and you have work on Monday,” He grimaced.
And the mechanics would snicker, one would come to your help and spell it out, but no one even questioned the fact that you were in charge of taking the notes, like it was completely normal, like you were meant to do it.
Things quieted down after an hour and a half. The last settings to the cars were being made and Charles sat down next to you to discuss with the race strategists and engineers. He grabbed the notebook back, scribbled a few things down, slid it back to you and somewhat forgot that you were there. It’s not that he wasn’t happy that you were sat next to him, because if you trusted the hand on your thigh and the thumb running circles on your skinny jeans, you knew he acknowledged your presence and appreciated it. But Charles was deeply in his zone and you had to respect it. You had to respect that he had work to do and that you weren’t his priority right now, like he was yours. You realized that day that if a real relationship was to blossom between the two of you, then it would never be linear and equal. You would become a “girlfriend of” and you would have to make sacrifices. You would have to pick up the slate most of the time, because he wouldn’t have the time to do it himself. You would have to step up and be the one putting in the work when he was busy, when he couldn’t be the one to lift this relationship on his own.
And weirdly, that didn’t scare you one bit.
You were ready to do the hard work for Charles. You just hoped he was ready too.
“I can do this,” You mumbled sleepily.
“I know you can,” He giggled softly. “I just don’t want you to regret having been tired or even coming here. Go and have some rest, okay?”
“Okay,” You agreed.
“I’m sorry, I don’t usually sleep in here, I have nothing to take a nap,” He groaned.
Charles did walk you to his room, this offensively little room, this ridiculously small room. As soon as the door was closed, you got rid of your facemask, knowing nobody would be able to see you and that you wouldn’t endanger anyone. Charles’ subtle smile didn’t go unnoticed when he finally got to see your entire face and that made your heart soar a little bit.
You barely had enough space to fit three people in here but still, he made sure you were settled on the couch, that you had a blanket in the form of his oversized Ferrari jacket and that the knitted jumper he had come with that morning was rolled up just good enough to make a pillow.
“It’s perfect,” You tempered, kissing his cheek. “Go and have fun at your briefing.”
“I’d have way more fun here with you.”
“I know,” You smiled. “But you have work to do, so go on and be the boss.”
Charles kissed the tip of your nose and closed the door behind himself, letting you doze right back off until he finally would be back and you’d get him for an entire evening.
☀️
When your eyes slipped right back open, you were still draped with a too big-for-you Ferrari jacket that smelled like your favorite boy. The sun had set a while ago and the little room you were sleeping in was quiet, a stark contrast of the state it was about a few hours ago, when everything was noisy downstairs in the hospitality. You knew most of the people had left already and you knew Charles was soon to come back to you, if you trusted the text that lit up your phone’s screen, which had been sent about fifteen minutes prior to your awakening.
Right as you stretched underneath the jacket and brought it back to your face, the door slid open quietly and Charles’ silhouette appeared in the sill, a shadow shaped in the man you liked and your lips thinned into a smile.
“Hey there, sleeping beauty,” Charles whispered. “Ready to go back to the hotel?”
“Yes, please,” You yawned. “What time is it?”
“It’s almost half past nine, you slept for quite a bit.”
“At least I’ll have some energy for tomorrow,” You shrugged, the jacket sliding from your chest as you sat back up.
“I got a small surprise for you,” Charles grinned. “Come on, let’s get back to the hotel.”
The drive back to the hotel Ferrari had booked for the weekend was short but you got to see quite a bit of scenery, just as you did when you climbed the hills on your way to the track. Charles’ hands sneaked on your thigh and your fingers interlaced with his on your denim clad leg and suddenly, the rest of the world didn’t matter. You were driving in a gorgeous Ferrari, with your favourite guy behind the wheels, the warm breeze blowing your hair and with a view that left you breathless. Why would you care about anything else?
The hotel was small but packed with Ferrari personnel. Charles led you to his room and helped you unpack a little, grinning at the array of sundresses you’d picked for the weekend. He handed you the little white dress with a red floral pattern that was waiting for you and kindly asked if you’d wear it tonight, for the surprise he had planned. You laughed at his hopeful look and grabbed the piece of clothing, promising you’d do your best after a quick shower, to which he answered he would take the second round and slip in the bathroom right after you.
You almost offered for him to join but swallowed the invitation, not knowing how well it would be received. You didn’t know whether you were ready or not but you knew you trusted him and you trusted your mind to take you to the right place on this one. When the time would be right, you’d know.
When Charles came out of the bathroom, he was wearing a white button down shirt with the sleeves rolled on his forearms and a pair of jeans that hugged him right in the right places.
“Looking good,” You smiled, rising on your tiptoes to plant a kiss on his lips.
“Said the most gorgeous human I’ve ever seen,” He teased back. “I’m so glad you took that dress in your suitcase,” He hummed, his hands grabbing the material on your hips to bring you closer to him. “You’re pretty.”
You didn’t have time to smile at the childish compliment. You knew the fact that he said “pretty” came from his still tentative English at times, but you loved the idea that he sounded like a little boy in love.
Love.
The idea flirted in your mind for a couple of seconds.
Was whatever this was, it? Was it Love? You didn’t know much about it. You certainly had been infatuated before, you couldn’t lie that you had pined quite a lot over Harrison, though you couldn’t even fathom why, these days. You’d had a few boyfriends over the years, you’d had relationships, some more serious than others. Not that you collected men like stamps, but you knew your last relationships had not been as special as whatever this was.
There was a magic to this that you couldn’t quite place. There was this buzzing anticipation of his fingers meeting any part of your skin that they could find, there was this comfort of knowing that somebody on this earth was happy and excited to see you, that they counted the days before they could get back to you. There was this knowing feeling of belonging somewhere and to someone, in a different way than your family or friends.
There was something more that you couldn’t quite process yet and that you couldn’t live without anymore.
Charles was bringing something new to the table and you loved that.
“So, what are your plans, racer boy?” You grinned against his cheek.
“I’m taking you to dinner outside. Let’s enjoy the weather we have, for as long as we have it.”
“Is there rain forecasted?”
“Quite a bit for tomorrow. I’m not looking forward to that.”
“How wet do you get when it rains?”
“Honestly? The suits are okay and we’re quite compacted into the cars, so not a lot of water gets to us, but the amount that does? It freaking sucks.”
You grimaced, knowing how uncomfortable it must be to drive under the wet conditions for hours, in a damp racesuit. When you’d get caught in the rain, it was already annoying. So to sit down in your own puddle of sweat, rain and spray for the cars in front? Dreading.
Charles had planned this dinner quite well. The restaurant was the one of the hotel, he couldn’t quite justify going out on a racing weekend, but you loved the background of it all and couldn’t care less about it. He could have taken you out to a fast food chain restaurant and you still would have been happy about it. Andrea had studied the menu and he knew what to get. He also had found a way to ask for a table outside, near the pool and you loved that you were sitting in a secluded area that felt like it was a little secret. The night had come and the sun was hiding well below the horizon as you sat at the table, after Charles dragged your chair away from the table and helped you sit. A couple of candles had been lit and a few strings of light bulbs casted a golden glow on the terrace of the hotel, where only a few people were sitting. You smiled at him as he sat in front of you and he gave you the drinks menu, to which you stuck your tongue at him for.
He couldn’t drink during a racing weekend and you knew it.
The meal was simple enough that you didn’t feel like you were out of place but it was good enough to leave you in a food coma by the end of dessert. Charles had been delightful in terms of company and you were glad you’d hopped into the plane earlier than planned, so you could have enjoyed your time together a bit more. You two had talked about the race, about the area you were in and what there was to see but that you wouldn’t see in the end because you couldn’t, because there was no time. There had been touches on the top of the tablecloth and beneath it as well, when your sandal came to graze the leg of his jeans, which made him grin more than you thought could be possible. And when nothing seemed to be possible anymore, when you thought you had exhausted all the happenings of the night, Life reminded you to never expect anything.
You chose a rosé wine and showed him the line that you wanted, which he ordered in French, leaving you breathless and more in awe than you’ve ever been. And you’d seen him race before. But there was something nice about hearing him talk French and you loved that he seemed so much more confident in himself in his native tongue. He carried himself differently in French and that left you wondering if maybe you should pick up a few French words so he’d be able to relax on his days off and just speak whatever language came to mind.
Food for thoughts for another day. For now, you had a nice guy to spend the evening with and to appreciate.
“I thought I’d heard your disgusting laugh,” a voice boomed behind you, making you jump slightly in your chair.
“You’re the worst,” Charles grinned. “Pierre, this is Y/N. Y/N, let me introduce you properly to Pierre, the bane of my existence but also, my best friend.”
“Nice to meet you. I heard great things about you,” Pierre smiled.
“Nice to meet you too,” You grinned. “I can’t quite repay the compliment, the only thing I heard was that you’re pretty weird,” You laughed.
“Let me guess. My girlfriend tattled on me again?” He groaned.
“I’m afraid she did. Lovely girl, though!”
“That she is,” He smiled softly, a loving look adorning his features for a second.
“She’s waiting on me to go back to our own hotel, but we wanted to try the restaurant here.”
“Pierre and his girl have this habit of trying restaurants, even though she only eats pasta and french fries,” Charles explained.
“Don’t even start,” Pierre mumbled. “Leave her alone, she’s fine.”
“I never said she wasn’t, I’m just saying, if you’re testing restaurants, at least have different meals?”
“Hey hey hey, I didn’t say shit when you were all lovey dovey in my texts planning your romantic weekend here, did I?” Pierre teased. “Leave us be, you douchebag.”
“See? I told you. The bane of my existence,” Charles joked.
“I won’t take up more of your time, it was really nice to meet you. Please send me a DM on Instagram, I’d love to chat and get to know you better. Also, I’ve been told to retrieve your username so you could chat with my nutcase of a girlfriend,” He shrugged. “She kinda liked you.”
“I kinda liked her too,” You smiled. “I’ll do that before going to bed, promise. I could use a friendly face in the paddock.”
“I didn’t know you’d met her,” Charles smiled.
“She led me to the Ferrari garage and got me a water bottle,” You shrugged. “She was super nice, while I was just.. Super lost.”
“That’s the usual, don’t worry,” Pierre reassured you, squeezing your shoulder. “You’ll see, by the end of the weekend, it’ll feel better.”
“If you say so.”
“Sorry I can’t stay longer and get to properly introduce myself, I’ll slide in your DMs as soon as I get yours!”
“Your girlfriend will love that.”
“Is that a hint of jealousy I can see coloring your cheeks, Charlie?” Pierre laughed. “Come on. You know I’m taken already, I already told you, I see you as a friend, I’m sorry.”
“Get the fuck out of here,” Charles scoffed. “You’re bothering us.”
Pierre didn’t stay long after that, he had places to be, people to go back to. You laughed at him flipping his middle finger to his best friend and let Charles take a breath back. He looked tired, which you knew was an after effect of the hard day of work he had just put out. His eyes were glossy with fatigue, a lazy droop coming out, and you suddenly felt a bit guilty for keeping him up.
“Are you ready to go to bed, Charles?”
“Yes,” He breathed out, in a small voice.
That night, you slept with the window open, listening to the cicadas and the dull lull of the wind in the pine trees, wrapped in the arms of a guy you couldn’t imagine your days without, anymore.
☀️
Qualis didn’t go well and the weather had been a bit chaotic, to say the least. Charles struggled to slot himself on the seventh line of the grid, while Pierre took out the sixth. As promised, you did send a message to Pierre’s instagram, which got you a nice invitation to let him follow you back, followed quickly by his girlfriend’s. You had chatted a bit with the girl during the morning, while she was stuck in Alpha Tauri’s ground and you were at Ferrari’s, which had got you a string of shocked emojis when she found your best friend “is actually Spider-Man, oh my God”. You laughed at the usual reaction you got when people saw certain of your posts but she didn’t dwell too much on it, only commenting once on it.
“Pierre is gonna freak out when he sees that,” She had sent.
“Why?”
“Because he knows how much I love Peter Parker. The character, I mean. I’m also partial to Steve Rogers AND Chris Evans. I won’t even lie to you.”
You had laughed quite a lot at that, because you couldn’t deny the chokehold Chris Evans had on everyone, you included if you were completely honest. You wouldn’t tell her that you did meet Chris once and he had been absolutely lovely. There was no way you would put Pierre through that too.
Charles had managed to wrap his work a bit earlier than the day before, since the qualis had ended a bit sooner and since the weather had decided to be a bit less dumb, he had brought you to the beach, where you had spent a couple of hours, having a picnic for dinner and walking to the waves hands in hands. He had brought you back to the hotel a bit earlier than planned, which had you in your bathing suit and in the hotel pool, since the weather allowed it now after a good rain pour during the afternoon.
You sat on the ledge, admiring the view of the pine trees around the hotel and appreciating a rare moment of quietness while Charles was floating closer and closer to you in the water, eyes closed and breathing deeply. His shoulders were still sporting the marks of the suit and the hans device, his cheeks were slowly losing the lines of his balaclava, but you could see the stress slowly being washed away by the small waves you kept creating by waddling your feet on the surface of the pool.
“You okay, Charles?” You softly asked after a deep sigh.
“I couldn’t be better,” He smiled, eyes still closed. “Or actually, I could,” He ended up muttering, reopening his eyes and swimming next to you, a grin eating his face more and more as he got closer to you.
Charles finally made his way next to you in the pool and leveraged himself up to sit next to you. Then he slid on his side and without you seeing his next move, rested his back on the ground and his head on your thighs.
“Now I’m in paradise,” He grinned, looking up at you like a little boy.
“I’m glad you’re enjoying your time,” You laughed.
“How could I not? You’re here. And you’re a comfortable pillow, I can add.”
“It’s ‘might I add’,” You teased. “You’re cute when your English is all fumbled.”
“That’s because you keep messing with my brain!”
“I’m not doing anything!” You defended yourself, giggling nonetheless.
“You’re looking all cute and lovely, it keeps distracting me,” He mumbled. “Now shush, I need to rest.”
As he closed his eyes, you observed him and took the time to appreciate the way the sun kept hitting the little freckles beneath his eyes and the shadows casted by his eyelashes on top of his cheekbones. Charles had always been pretty to you, but as the golden hour started and the reflection of the little waves in the pool lit his face up, you wondered what he must have done in a previous life to be that blessed by nature. You knew the entire brotherhood to be nice looking. There was no denying that the good genes had spread amongst the Leclerc brothers, but there was something special with Charles, with all the little flaws that made his face perfect in every way.
“Are you happy?” Charles mumbled from below.
“I am,” You smiled, even though he couldn’t see it. Your index finger traced the bridge of his nose, running to the tip. “You?”
“Incredibly happy,” He confirmed, turning his head slightly so he could drop a kiss on your stomach.
You knew your time with Charles was always running out. You only had less than twenty-four hours with him, including the race tomorrow, and then you’d have to take another plane back to London, back to your grey apartment, leaving the golden light of the South of France to Charles. You already missed him and he was still lying across your lap.
Scrunching over him, you dropped a tiny kiss on the top of his nose and his lips stretched in a lazy smile, before puckering up, demanding a kiss which you offered without complaint. Your left hand came to contact with the ground, supporting your weight, while your right one found its place in his hair, playing with the still wet strands.
“Do you feel confident for the race tomorrow?”
“Not really,” He sighed. “But I’ll do what I can, as always.”
“I’ll be cheering for you from the garage,” You promised.
“That’s all that matters, this weekend. You’re all that matters.”
“Liar,” You grinned.
“Okay, maybe you’re all that matters right now. I can’t promise when I’ll be in the car.”
“That’s more like it.”
“M’gonna miss you,” Charles finally admitted.
“M’gonna miss you more,” You nodded, tracing circles on his scalp.
“Are you coming to Silverstone?”
“I’m trying to find tickets,” You confirmed.
“Can you be my guest again?”
“I’m trying to get my dad in,” You grimaced. “He hasn’t been to a race yet.”
“Seriously?” Charles frowned. “Why?”
“Dunno. It never really happened, I guess? It’d be nice to get him to Silverstone. So if I get a paddock pass, I need one for my dad as well.”
“Done deal,” Charles mumbled again, closing his eyes back. “Consider you and your dad to be my guests.”
“You don’t have to do that.”
“Yes, I do. Because I like you and at some point, I’m gonna meet your dad.”
“You don’t have to meet him during a racing week. You’ll be busy already, you’ll have tons on your mind,” You tried to temper.
“I don’t think it’ll matter a lot whether I meet him in Silverstone or in six months,” He countered. “The sooner the better.”
Six months. You hadn’t really looked past this weekend, taking every day with Charles as some kind of blessing. But he was fully invested, he was fully in. He was planning a future with you. He was thinking about it. And you loved it.
“If you say so,” You smiled.
“So, will you and your dad be my guests in Silverstone?”
“We will,” You confirmed. “I can’t wait to surprise him with that. He’s gonna kiss the ground you walked on, you know that?” You giggled.
“Let’s not do that. Not very clean.”
“It’s an image, you silly,” You laughed. “I meant he’s gonna think you’re the coolest, nicest, most amazing guy.”
“Cool. No need for me to stress about it, then?”
“Absolutely not,” You promised, hunching down again to kiss him. “He already likes you, you know? He thinks you’re the best driver on the grid right now. And you’re with Ferrari. So you’re automatically in his good book.”
“Nice,” Charles smiled. “Can’t wait to meet him.”
“Can’t wait either,” You grinned.
You stayed there, watching the small waves in the pool, while Charles kept one of his legs waddling in the water. Your right hand kept drawing circles on his scalp while his had crept above his head, finding a spot on your calves, gently caressing your skin. The sun was lowering on the horizon line, the warmth of it slowly decreasing as well.
When finally it became obvious that you both were cold, there was nothing much else to do than to pack everything up, grab dinner and find your way back to the hotel room. Charles was nowhere near accepting the fact that it was time to get up, his head still comfortably resting on your thighs and his lips occasionally finding your stomach.
It was up to you to take matters into your own hands.
“Hey, Charles?” You whispered.
“Yeah?”
“I think it’s time you take me back to that hotel room of ours.”
Nothing could match the brightness of his grin when he opened his eyes and looked into yours, finding the confirmation he needed.
“Understood, Ma’am.”

Chapter:  5/ It’s a secret.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
That night, your eyes opened, you had believed they would never do so again.
You were shaking in a sweat and very short of breath. It took you quite long to notice the shadow figure standing near the wall and it nearly caused you to scream.
“You missed the whole day.”
By the sound of his voice, you knew who it was.
“Did paladins die? I hope so.” Your bitterness was stronger than your voice.
The Monk came closer, hands behind his back, witnessing how fragile all the healing had made you.
He had brought a Fey and cursed them to the same fate.
Able to heal anyone but themselves.
A curse or a blessing?
The lasting silence from him felt odd.
“What?” You snapped.
He moved his hands from behind his back and dangled a fresh looking pastry in front of your nose.
Your eyes locked on it immediately, were you delirious?
Your eyes slid to his face, to prideful to ask out loud if you could have it.
He gave a shallow nod and let you take the pastry from his hand.
It tasted so good it nearly brought out tears.
As you ate, he walked around the room.
Crumbs landed everywhere with your hands shaking so much, you did not let them go to waste either and put every single one of them in your mouth as well. “Why did you refuse to let me heal you the first time?”
He hid the compassion he had felt behind the excuse, “It would be a waste to risk your death for a wound that would heal by itself in time. You are too valuable.”
Your eyes narrowed at him at that.
Until he corrected his wording. “Your healing ability is too valuable.”
Again you were diminished to nothing more than the magic you were born with.
“Wow. Thanks.” The sarcasm dripped from you.
For a blink, he looked aware of his poor communication skills.
The shaking was slowly getting better. “That village where you found me, did you find other Fey?”
It drew his eyes to your face, a look of interest in them.
The worry for Squirrel’s safety had kept you up many a night. “You said you do not harm children. There was a boy.”
The paladins had told him of it, and he had told them not to bother catching the child.
“There was only you.” He said.
You laid down on your side, feeling how the exhaustion increased just by eating.
He tilted his head. “Have others of your clan died because of their power.”
“Many.” It was the honest truth. “The pain, we can feel it too when we use it too much.”
The Monk stepped closer and you hated how weak you felt and how healthy he looked now.
There was no fight in you left, not physically.
You forced your eyes shut, feeling the air barely able to fill your lungs who craved it so much because it hurt. “Do not think that giving me something to eat will make me forgive you for this. I will never forgive you, Monk.”
He expected as such. “I do not need your forgiveness.”
“Only your god’s?” You guessed.
By the looks of it, you had guessed correctly.
You fired it at him, “How do you think you can receive the forgiveness of a god, if you can’t even get it from a Fey?”
Even now, you did not fear speaking like this to him…
He was not amused by it. “I do not seek the forgiveness of evil.”
You mumbled between your teeth, “Not evil enough to stop paladins from using me.”
It was a fair retort.
The remainder of small glass shards cracked beneath his boot and he brushed them under the bed with it.
“Why are you still here?” It was keeping you from sleep.
“I am ordered to make certain you survive.” He admitted.
Ugh. They were keeping you alive to torment you further. “So I can serve my purpose?”
It sounded like he had sighed quietly.
The Monk knelt down next to the bed, it had your attention and glare right away. “The more you cooperate, the better your life will become among us.”
It was exhausting. “Obey or suffer. That is what you are offering, do you even realize this? Is that how they twisted your mind?”
He looked off to the side, trying to remain indifferent to what you said.
“Tell me what kind of Fey you are, and I will answer a question you may have.” He used the same tactic you had used on him.
Your answer was as indifferent as he acted, “I am not interested in learning about you.”
The change in his expression was gone not a second later.
But you had seen it nonetheless and wondered what had gone through his head right there and then.
There was one thing you were prepared to trade for, “If you bring me another one of those pastries, I will tell you what I am.”
He had not expected for you to propose a deal. “Agreed.”
“Now.” You added.
His enthusiasm was gone by the time he stood again. “Now?”
It was the middle of the night.
There was no swaying you. “Now.”
The Monk swallowed the protest now that he was so close to getting the information he wanted.
Still, it was obvious by the way he left the room that he wasn’t happy with being rushed.
Good. You weren’t happy either.
As you waited, you played the dangerous game of closing your eyes for ‘just a second’ and lost.
That second lasted until morning, and when you did open them you found the pastry right in front of your nose on the bed.
The Monk had not woken you for his end of the bargain. Odd.
Was it sympathy or pity? And why not exploit it for your benefit?
~~~♡~~~♡~~~◇~~~♡~~~♡~~~
When he came to fetch you in the morning, you were sitting up on the edge of the bed, talking some courage into yourself.
Of course you had eaten that pastry, or risked it being taken from you.
The Monk entered the room, tankard of water in hand, scanning you up and down to get an idea on your health status.
After he gave you the water to drink, he went to stand near the wall, his hands folded behind his back. “There are not many wounded today. I believe a repeat of yesterday will not occur.”
You drank the water, feeling how your body responded in gratitude.
Quietly you began, “Thank you for the water-..” He instantly locked eyes on you, “-and for the pastries.”
It had had an effect on him. “Uphold your end of the bargain.”
You did so without defiance. “I am Dawn Folk.”
The quick answer was unexpected, he had expected more wit or defiance.
“Dawn Folk…” He was pensive.
It did not make him recall anything.
You stood up from the bed, putting down the tankard, and slowly got closer to him. “I know you have been kind to me and I have not been behaving very grateful.”
Those weeping eyes were sharp as a hawk’s.
You stopped a little to his side. “But, I am.”
With the speed of a snail, you reached out and touched his arm.
A frown creased his forehead, eyes dropping to see your hand curl around his arm.
This man behaved as if no one had ever done such a thing to him before. Good, that confusion and uncertainty worked in your favor.
“You could treat me much worse.” Your other hand hovered not an inch above his chest and slowly moved down to his waist, where the daggers were on the belt.
Suddenly he grabbed your wrist, stopping you.
“I could.” He warned you what the result would be if you tried to take one of his daggers.
Dammit.
Angered by your failure, you tried to step away.
He didn’t allow it to happen. “Consider yourself fortunate that I am not as bitter as you are.”
That earned him a firm push from you and it had you break free. “Bitter?! You are keeping me here like an animal, you arrogant bastard!”
Ah, there was that fire in you again.
The Monk dared to fuel it, “You are acting as one.”
Out of sheer frustration, you picked up the tankard and tossed it at his head.
He gracefully avoided it by leaning to the side, arching a brow as if it proved his point.
Not a minute ago, you were trying to seduce him, and now this.
When he actually seemed amused by it, it baffled you.
The Monk offered a choice, “Either you walk with me willingly, or I bind your hands and take you to the infirmary. Choose wisely.”
You spat at the ground in front of his feet.
Minutes later, with your hands bound in front of you, he had dragged you through the halls towards the infirmary.
He was there to make sure his red brothers did not report missing weapons later.
You felt his eyes on your back constantly and often glared at him over your shoulder.
A paladin came to speak to him for a moment.
The only time you did not watch your back was the moment a hand hit your rear, hard enough for the sound to echo in the infirmary.
It hurt.
The paladin responsible for it was sitting on a cot and received your fist to his nose.
The next few seconds were chaotic.
There was a lot of shouting and threats thrown your way, some had drawn their weapons and were ready to enact vengeance for their red brother.
“Quiet!” The Monk’s voice thundered over them all.
Blood seeped from the paladin’s nose.
You were in a corner, trying to stay out off their reach.
The Monk pushed past them, took your arm and steered you to the door.
The wounded paladin spoke up, “She broke my nose, Brother!”
“Consider it your punishment for breaking the vow!” The Monk barked, shutting the paladin down.
You were out of that room faster than one would think possible.
By the looks of it, he was steering you towards the room again.
And he wasn’t being very alert, probably too distracted by the fact that he would have to explain this to the priest.
He was there in the room and still this had happened. Father would not be pleased in the slightest. Would he think him incapable of keeping one Fey woman in control?
You bumped into his side on purpose and got close enough to steal the short sword from his side.
With the level of skill you had with the sword, you were fast enough to lash out with it at him.
He blocked the sword from getting near his face and the steel cut through his sleeve and skin.
You ran before he could call out for the others, and never heard him do so.
It was a blessing that the ruckus in the infirmary had drawn most of the paladins there.
You heard a group running in your direction, opened the first door you saw and got inside. A set of wooden stairs lead down into the cellar.
Barrels of wine decorated the place and you wished you had a hammer to drown this place in it.
Hurriedly, you cut the ropes from your wrist loose completely with the sword.
Whilst searching for an exit or trapdoor, you heard the stairs creak and hid behind one of the barrels.
The racing of your heart had your blood pumping through your veins.
By the quiet way of walking, you knew it was the Monk who was down there with you.
To your dismay, he seemed to be walking right to the spot you were hiding behind.
With his longsword, he tapped against the barrel you hid behind.
You shot out from behind it and lunged at him with the sword immediately.
He created a distance between you when it was clear you had chosen to fight.
His skill outmatched yours, but that did not mean that you wouldn’t give it your all in a fight.
He was so damn fast and you ruthlessly kept trying to strike at him.
All that build up anger found it’s outlet, the sound of steel clashing with his was deafening
Those at home would be proud of you for standing your ground.
You nicked him on his other arm.
It made him reconsider on holding back, you appeared quite capable with the sword.
One of your favorite moves was to spin and strike, and as you began your spin it was the Hidden that struck.
The pain they brought down on you was debilitating. It felt as if they were crushing your skull from the inside.
They still disagreed with you when it came to the Monk and you felt betrayed by it.
He saw you sink to your knees while your grasped at your head in agony.
You cried out and pleaded for them to stop this, “No! Please! I beg you, stop!”
How could hear the whispers of evil now, while they tore into the one who they had forced to heal him.
The pleas were ignored and their punishment continued without mercy.
It hurt so much that you felt yourself getting closer to fainting with each passing second.
The Monk was saying something but you could not hear him past the overwhelmingly loud voices.
You felt something around your waist, and then you were pulled into him.
He was there, kneeling on the floor and holding you to try and help. “They cannot harm you if you shut them out.”
He spoke from experience. Years and years of it.
Your vision was beginning to darken. How could you shut out something so powerful?
“Help…-” The idea of never regaining consciousness again terrified you.
He readjusted his position, an arm around to support your head, hand on your neck. “Breath.”
The relief began at your neck, as if they only yielded because he wanted them to.
It spread in your body until all that was left was complete and utter exhaustion.
The short sword you had dropped had been kicked to the other end of the room and you were left unarmed in the hands of the Monk.
As if he sensed a line being crossed, he lifted his hand so it no longer touched your neck.
At this point you did not care if the enemy was holding you up in a seated position, it was that or hitting the floor.
Was this what had happened in the forest that forced you to heal him?
Once you felt a bit better, you scrambled out of his hold.
“You hear them…” You breathed out, sitting on the floor, shocked that they would let themselves be heard by someone like him.
He hated that he could hear them try to influence him all the time. “The suffering they inflict on you will lessen in time, if you reject their influence.”
You refused to be turned to the Church like he was. “If they are doing this to me, there is a damn good reason for it.”
He hit the nail on the head, “They are tormenting you to protect me.”
It was unfair. “Why are they protecting a traitor?”
Because of what he was…
It dawned on you that you did not know what sort of Fey he actually was, and the answer to your question could be the same “What…kind of Fey are you?”
From his expression, you deduced he would not answer the question.
Your eyes drifted to the sword at the other end of the cellar.
He did not have to look to see where your attention had went. “Who taught you how to wield a sword?”
Now it was you who refused to answer.
The Monk stood up and offered a hand, blood stained his sleeves from where you had managed to cut him. “I am taking you back to your room.”
You smacked the hand away.
He sighed deeply, and under the sound of your protests he grabbed your arm and brought you up from the floor again.
The weakness of your legs caused you to stumble and land into his side.
A couple of curses flew out, and you almost considered just falling over being anywhere near him.
“Weren’t there more wounded?” You remembered there were tree.
“It can wait.” He brushed the question away. “Now, will you be calm and walk along, or will you continue to fight me?”
Your eyes narrowed at him. “It can wait.”
Slowly his eyes drifted to your face, doubting it was sarcasm.
You would feel more up to fighting after some rest.
On the walk back to the room, you remembered how back in the dungeon you had sensed his presence. All alone in the dark, it was far more simple to focus on the signals nature granted to you.
This man was odd, you wished it was simple and that he was just pure evil, but it was more complicated than that.
He was Fey. He was serving the enemy and you had no idea why he had chosen to do so, it made no sense. What Fey kind was he even? Why did the Hidden insist on protecting him even if it meant hurting you?
There was more than what meets the eye and you wanted to get to the bottom of it.
He caught you staring and send you a look that translated to ‘what?’
You questioned it out loud, “Why did you run to their side?”
The Monk refused to answer and locked you back in that room.
Even though you hated being trapped, you were glad that you could rest now and that there were no paladins around to hit your rear again.
If only the wind did not blow cold air into the room through that window you had broken.
You grabbed your former shirt and trousers off the floor and tried to stuff them in the window.
By being weakened, thanks to the Hidden, you couldn’t manage it.
The idea to drag the bed under the window came fast, and you stepped on it to gain some more advantage. It went easier and you did not have to strain so much.
The door flew open as you were still shoving the fabrics in there.
Quickly you looked over your shoulder to see the Monk looking rather confused.
“I’m guessing you’re not gonna help with this.” You stated.
He approached and stopped at the bed, “What are you doing?”
Wasn’t it obvious? “Shoving my clothes in the window.”
This time he did keep his hand on the pommel of his sword, not taking any risks. “What happened in the infirmary, has that happened here before?”
You faced the window and continued the task. “They’ve tried. Why? Do you believe them to be saints?”
“None of us are.” He had tilted his head down.
Once the wind was blocked from entering, you hopped down from the bed and ignored him to push the bed back where it came from.
He took hold of your elbow. “Come with me.”
“Why?” You quickly asked.
The question went ignored and he proceeded to bind your hands together again, this time behind your back and he kept a hand on the rope while walking you through the hallways.
With his fingers hooked on the rope, he stopped and kept you beside him.
Many paladins were walking in the larger hall and you gravely disliked seeing so much red.
His eyes stayed on the crowded place, “Which ones tried to break their vow?”
It was met with great reluctance, you did not want to answer it at all. “I don’t remember.”
The Monk did not even look at you when saying, “In exchange I will offer a meal.”
Your empty stomach was making your memory return, still…
Why did he want to know? Was this a test?
The doubt must have been visible to him.
He was waiting for your cooperation. “There is no place for sin here. Describe them to me.”
“No.” You weren’t trusting those bastards to not retaliate against you.
A silence fell between you and you could sense he was trying to think of a way to convince you otherwise.
“They are not to touch a woman. Not like this.” He thought it needed explaining.
You deadpanned, “Tell that to my rear.”
Father Carden walked in your direction.
The Monk called out to two paladins before handing you over to them, then he went to speak to the priest.
You could only hear Carden ask why ‘the Fey girl’ was here now. Did the Monk not ask for permission before doing things like this?
From the looks of it, the priest was quite dismissive to what the Monk was telling him.
Father Carden walked away and the Monk was left looking disappointed.
It took a few seconds for him to snap out of it and march to where you were.
“Hand her back.” He was anything but courteous about it.
The paladins released you fast and stepped back at the sight of his anger slipping from under the stoic mask.
You were whisked away by him instantly, he walked fast, very fast.
His angry strut lasted for three hallways, then simmered down.
Something inside told you to be silent and let him come to his senses first.
You were back in the room within minutes, were he took the ropes off from your wrists.
It did not pass you by how bothered he appeared by what had been said to him.
“What? Did the priest scold you or something?” You hoped not to sound too interested.
Father’s reply had come as a shock to him.
~“She is but a Fey.”~
You were there to heal them, not as… entertainment.
That bastard proceeded to push you to sit down on the bed.
Of course you went to stand again but he just repeated the action.
“Sit down and listen.” He was at the end of his patience.
“I’m not one of your paladin dogs that you can order around!” You seethed.
How could he begin to explain the threat you faced?
Only when you saw him visibly struggle to say a word, did it silence you. This wasn’t the sort of person to appear struggling before an enemy.
“What is it?” This time you asked calmer but still annoyed.
The Monk cast his eyes to the broken window. “Avoid being alone with my red brothers.”
That was not your decision to make in this situation. “Are you serious? I am a prisoner here! Why-…”
The reality dawned on you just when you were about to ask.
He looked at your face briefly, then at the floor.
The anger dripped from you. “Does a Fey woman not count as a woman? Are we excluded from the vow?”
He could not even say it out loud that his red brothers would not be punished for taking advantage of a Fey woman.
Here he was, warning you while standing aside, it was infuriating to say the least.
You were on your feet not a second later. “Did you tell me this just to frighten me? Is that why?!?”
To him, it was insulting. “I told you this to warn you!”
To warn you against something you could barely do a thing against because they tied you up all the time?!?
“Leave me alone. You’re just as bad as the rest of them!” It was a sneer.
The door was slammed shut by him as he left.
Why would the Weeping Monk try to help a Fey? This had to be a mind game of his to keep you under control.
You sat down on the bed, still feeling the result of the Hidden’s scorn.
It was hard not to feel abandoned by them, when they preferred someone like the Monk over you.
Why else would they stop you from fighting him and leaving him to die?
Escaping this place proved difficult, but they would not remain here forever. When they traveled again, they would need you. It would be much easier to escape on a wagon.
For now, you would do what you needed to survive.
Skelly is walking in the park with their toddler. He turns his back for a moment to talk with someone he knows, and when he looks behind again, the kid is gone. He finds them two hours later, hanging out on the playground's swings.
Undertale Sans - When he realises the kid is not there, he's having a panic attack and teleports frantically everywhere in the park, screaming his kid's name and shaking random people to ask them if they see his child. What if they left the park? What if they got kidnapped?! In ugly sobs, he calls Papyrus for help, who calls Undyne, who calls Toriel, and in a blink almost all of his friends are in the park to help him. Papyrus is actually the one who spots the kid. Sans teleports-crashes into Papyrus to hug his kid. God, never do that again, his soul can't take it twice.
Undertale Papyrus - "NYEH?!" He screams his kid name, hopping his loud voice would be enough to make them magically appear again. But he waits five minutes, ten minutes, twenty minutes, and his kid is still not here. Papyrus is slowly starting to panick, and starts looking around. He tries to stay calm at first, but after an hour or so, he loses it and he's shaking every bushes to look after the child. He finds them all by himself, his bones covered with bruises, but he is so relieved. He's not mad, but asks the kid to never do that again.
Underswap Sans - Hum. Well, that happened. Now, Blue is more like "if i can't see the problem, there's no problem", so he just sat on a bench and... Uh... Took a nap, hoping the kid would be here when he wakes up, because time goes faster when he sleeps. When he wakes up, the kid is on the swings, so it worked. Good enough. Pfew, he thought he would have to be a responsible dad for once.
Underswap Papyrus - He goes from frozen in shock to hyperventilating in a few seconds. Honey is panicking badly and this panick doesn't help him to think straight. Instead, he's already imagining a thousand scenariis, each one worst than the previous one. People around are so concerned they called the rescue services to help the poor skeleton. One of the rescuers casually brought the kid back to him. The kid isn't even feeling guilty, just confused about why their dad is screaming on the floor like an angry toddler.
Underfell Sans - Oh, it's fine. He just screams "hey brat, if you don't show up at the gate in five minutes, i let you here!" The kid knows Red is serious so they run out of where they were hiding to go home. Red is satisfied of his little power.
Underfell Papyrus - It doesn't take two hours. Egde is hunting the child down, he's good at this. In less than five minutes, the kid is right in his arms and grounded for the rest of the week because they didn't listen to him.
Horrortale Sans and Papyrus - Willow was cooking when Oak came home. He asked if the two of them had fun to the park, only to be greeting with a long silence. Willow looks at Oak who is looking more and more panicked. "SANS, WHERE'S THE KID?" "uuuuuh" "SANS, WHERE'S THE KID SANS DON'T TELL ME YOU LOST THE KID I SWEAR TO GOD SANS I'M GOING TO CRACK YOUR SKULL OPEN EVEN MORE THAN IT IS ALREADY." Willow chased Oak of the house, throwing shoes at his back. Oak teleports a while later with the kid and terrible puppy eyes because Willow, Willow's S/O and his own S/O are mad at him. He knows you're going to lecture him to death.
Swapfell Sans - He has a long range magic. So he just calls his kid soul and drags them from where they are back to him. Though he maybe didn't think about all the trees on the way. The kid is back, yeah, in mostly one piece, but yeah, the face, arms and body almost entirely blue. Welp. He's disappearing with his kid before S/O finds out.
Swapfell Papyrus - He goes home with another kid dressed in his own kid clothes and just hopes it will works. It doesn't. S/O kicked him out of the house with the help of his own brother who is so ashame and is ready to disinherit him if he doesn't find his nephew/niece back. Rus is going, shuffling along.
Fellswap Gold Sans - That's it, he's pissed off. He's putting the cone of shame around his kid neck. S/O asked what the hell, but he insists the kid keeps it so they learn to stop disobey him. SHAME ON YOU. SHAME ON YOUR COW. Yeah, he's not the best with kids.
Fellswap Gold Papyrus - Uh-oh. He's not feeling so well. Uh... Uh... He goes fetch an ice cream to calm down. He can find the kid later. He's too stressed right now. The kid saw he bought an ice cream and ran to him, offended he's eating ice cream without them. Well, good. At least S/O won't kill him. What a relief.
To Tokyo by public transport, Day 9 - Batumi
Tumblr media
Next day we reached Batumi and wow. SO many skyscrapers! I hate spoilers so I never had looked up Batumi. But this was insane and intense. Frankfurt is a shit against Batumi o.o
Offboarding
To my big surprise we made it pretty much in time. Not bad for a ship that started about 10 hours late. But since they do this trip every week you could expect them to have a good plan.
Sooner or later the Border Patrol will enter the ship. Not by Plane, Helicopter or Boat, but simply after we reached the docks. Some paperwork later you can go down the ship, walk though another checkup and leave the inner Harbour area.
To the left (south) you can reach the inner city. To the Nord the Train Station. I decided to walk this "distance" and hell. Think twice if you really would like to WALK that distance. Really! Burned all over I had allot of regrats.
When I started in Passau it was 2°C ... in bulgaria it was 20°C and in Batumi it was almost over 30. Without sunscreen or trees on that side of the road you end up like an boiled egg.
Schedules
The Train station was an pretty empty Building with just some counters. To my surprise I was able to get Lari out of the ATM. Seems like the V-Pay works in georgia, too? Or maybe just on this sole ATM? Good question. At least there was no V-Pay sticker on it. So I don't know? However.
The schedule on rome2rio was not accurate. Only the late train is in existence. You NEED to buy an ticket. Without a fixed seat you cannot go on board. They will fix it. And the train was nearby sold out, so I had to take the 2th class ticket. 40€ for that.
Tumblr media
(poster on the Trainstation. Only 17km from Batumi!)
I invested the 'more time' to get back into the inner city and catch up Russian Money. Finally I was able to get some. Finally.
I had no time to visit more of Batumi but this 'money change' street. But pfew it was chaotic. Well, its not the best place to visit anyway.
Long long long ...
Tumblr media
The whole Train was west European standard. Same model. Same seats. Same everything and pretty clean.
And yet. It was awfull. Don't know why but for the first time I was not able to enjoy an part of this journey at all. I just felt very exhausted.
In Tbilisi, 22 o'clock, I wanted no more risk and booked on the official Train-Company Hotel right in the train station. Another 34€ ...
wasted. The room was. Below average. The walls were paper thin. The pair on the other side had a lot of fun till 1 o'clock and all rooms share one big balcony separated by some fence where you easily could look into others rooms.
I had not really any time to take a look at Tbilisi. Too bad. But on an journey like this, you cant see them all.
End of the Day
65€ for this. Were back on solid soil so lets get over with how to waste this kind of money. I mean, it was already somehow expensive. But I'm sure there is room for more. 5007112 for example!
Tumblr media
Lego wall knobs for fing 65€!
The Troubadour
Requested: no
A/N: This has to be my longest piece ever! I hope it was worth the wait and that you enjoyed it. There could be a few mistakes in there both in English and Italian, sorry in advance. I loved writing this, it wasn’t exactly what I wanted but I am a perfectionist and I have rewritten this about 5 times. I just needed to post it now!
Pairing: OC!Diana Bianchi & Damiano David
Words: 3k
Warning(s): swearing, drinking, smoking (I mean it’s the 70s…), smoking weed, my Italian (I have been studying this beautiful language for three years now but people make mistakes)
Tumblr media
West Hollywood, California // Mid-January 1972
Red eyes.
Sweaty foreheads.
That is all Diana would see when they screamed at her. “CAN I GET TWO BEERS AND A COKE PLEASE?!”
Working behind the bar was not her dream job. Diana remembered it like it was yesterday, she and her friend Tami had gone to The Troubadour to celebrate the weekend when she saw a “help wanted” poster. It was a godsend. Diana applied there and then and not long after she found herself behind the bar, handing out drinks to people who looked like they were having the best time of their lives. Another plus side was the fact that she could attend the concerts of all the artists and bands for free.
Obviously, there were also downsides to this job. For example, Diana couldn’t go out and live her teenage years. She isn’t allowed to drink (too much) on the job and the hours aren’t exactly great. The pay is okay though and the tips are even better. Half of the people don’t even know how much they are giving and walk off like they didn’t just hand you 20 for an eight dollar drink. She doesn’t complain much about her job but she does feel left behind sometimes. Like when Tami or her other friend chat about some weird adventure they had the night before and who they met or kissed. Diana felt like she missed out on a lot of things but she had no other choice.
Her parents had kicked her out when she was 15. Diana moved in with her grandmother and lived with her for a while until she passed away. She has been living alone in her grandmother’s old apartment ever since. A few friends had moved in with her but then moved out again when they had found a better place to live. So it was just Diana paying the rent for the place.
 “CAN I GET A RUM AND COKE?!” Diana gets snapped out of her thoughts. Shit, what did he want?! She thinks to herself as she stares at the intoxicated man.  “SORRY?!” She shouts back over the loud music. At least she had another reason for not hearing the man.  “RUM AND COKE!” That is all the man yells before turning his band to her so he could face the stage. Some weird indie band is playing tonight. Diana wasn’t really into it and honestly couldn’t wait until her boss would send her home for the night. She puts in a little less rum, the man will probably not even taste the difference.
The band had stopped playing somewhere around two a.m. However not all the guests had left around 2.30 which is something Diana hated the most. It wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy her job but after so many hours standing on her feet, she wanted nothing more than to clean up, go home and get into her warm bed.
 “Diana, can you come here for a minute?” her boss asked. What was that tone, was he going to fire her?! “It’s nothing bad, don’t worry.” Pfew. Diana walked behind him into his office.
 “What can I help you with, Doug?” She asked as she sat down in the very comfortable chair across from him. Doug Weston had somewhat become her parent over the last few years that she had worked here. He was always so kind to her and could always ask him for help if she needed him.
 “I want to get more bands from across the sea. I want interesting people and not just the same bands playing over and over again. New talent that no one has heard of before but will become known because of this place. Inspire new talent, you know?” He was rambling on with his sales pitch as if you had any input, it was his place after all. “And seeing that you can speak more languages than I have ever could, I was wondering if you could write small pieces for newspapers in Europe that will inspire these artists to come here and get all the fame and fortune they want.”
 “Sure, Doug. You know I would do anything to help this place… and you of course”, Diana said while a wide grin spread on her face. She felt like she was moving up when in reality it wasn’t a new job position. She would do anything to not have the same indie bands playing almost every night. Diana would never have imagined that she would change the lives of four individuals barely six months later, and change her own life along with it.
Rome, Italy // Mid-March 1972
 “The Troubadour. The place where artists and bands from all over the world can make it or break it in the United States. It all depends on the crowd. If they love you, you can come back for an entire week! If not you will receive the money for that evening but sadly you won’t be allowed back. It’s always packed with record executives so you could get a sweet record deal out of this experience. Do you have what it takes? Sign up and good luck to everyone competing in the battle of the bands! – D. B.” Damiano finishes reading. “Ragazzi, I honestly cannot wait till we get to play there! It’s going to be veramente stupendo!”
 “Bene Damiano, calm yourself. It’s less than five months away. We still have to play in this dump to even afford to go. We barely have enough money for a motel, we don’t even have the plane tickets yet!” Classic Victoria, always worrying as if she is the mother of the group.  “Calmati Victoria, noi staremo bene”, Ethan jumps in. “Let’s get back to practising before we start another fight, sì?” The rest nods their head and pick up their instruments.  “I was thinking, should we start with I wanna be your slave oppuro no? Is it too much?” Damiano suggest.  “Oh, and for outfits, I have a few ideas?!” Thomas adds like a little kid who is excited for Christmas day.  “Positivo, let’s look at those after practice”, Damiano says. Not even ten minutes later they had many up a little setlist. It was a battle of the bands so they had to at least practice 4-5 songs to play against other bands. Then if they were allowed to come back they had to prepare yet another 6 songs on top of those 5 they had already played. They could do it, they had enough songs in their database but were they going to sing their Italian songs or did they have to translate them? The members of Måneskin weren’t sure yet. Luckily for them, they had four months to think about it.
West Hollywood, California // Mid-July 1972
Diana hadn’t even woken up yet, but on the other side of the city, Måneskin had arrived at the airport.  “Finalmente ci siamo. Ce l’abbiamo fatta!” Thomas exclaims. Damiano chuckles and throws an arm around Thomas’s shoulders.  “Slow down, loverboy. We have not made it yet. We landed yes, but we have a long way to go from here to that stage tonight.”  “How every grown-up of you, Damiano”, Victoria teases. “I bet with Ethan that you would follow the first American girl that you saw in this airport and that we wouldn’t see you until much later.”  “Ha ha, molto divertente, Victoria. Sei una persona così divertente.” They continue their bickering whilst Ethan collects all of their suitcases.   “Addiamo?” He finally asks the group, they all agree and make their way through the busy airport to the designated taxi area. During this, they complain about how crowded it is and how much the air smells. It is nothing like their own country but you have to take chances if you want to become famous like their dream.
Later that day
Doug had told Diana to come into work later than she usually would. It was going to be a busy night and he’d rather have her work during the performances than during the day and wear her out. So here she was around six-thirty instead of two o’clock. It felt so weird because usually when she arrives there is no line out front and now there was one to the end of the block. She passed all the people waiting in line, hearing them complain and moan as she walks up to Mario, the bouncer. He doesn’t even need to see her worker-id, as she walks in he wishes her good luck with tonight. She liked Mario, he was working here before she came and even then he had told her if she ever needed anything him and his wife had an extra bed for her. Honestly, the sweetest guy… also the toughest guy you will ever meet.
As Diana walked to the changing area to hang her coat and bag, she ran into a few participants of tonight’s show. She greeted most of them but they were too busy with themselves, the fame they hadn’t even earned yet was already rising to their heads. Before she could make her way to the bar, Doug called her over.
 “Diana, come here for a second. I want to introduce you to a few people.” Classic Doug, always introducing everybody to everybody. If he believed you could make it, he would introduce you to all his workers. However, the bands did not know this, the workers would treat them a little extra. “They are from Italy as well!” As if Diana herself had moved for their, it was actually her grandparents. She could speak a little Italian but other than her last name, there was nothing Italian about her. Doug briefly introduced the members of Måneskin to Diana, who couldn’t keep her eyes off a certain member. To be quite honest she had not remembered everyone’s names and she stumbled to get her name out of her mouth. All because she was already head over heels with this handsome, tall, young Italian man.
After a couple of introduction, Diana was finally behind her bar, her safe space. Meeting Damiano had made her weak in her knees, she had never had a reaction like this before. She didn’t really pay attention to the competitors and focused on serving the people but when it was Måneskin’s turn, she started to lose focus on her work.
During most of their setlist, Damiano kept glancing over to Diana and winking at her. Or at least that’s what it felt like for Diana. However, after a rather sexy song (let’s be real most of them are) he kissed one of his male bandmates on the mouth. Now Diana is not one to judge people on who they love. She reasons that everyone should love who they want to love and receive love because of it. It wasn’t that she hated it, it kind of turned her on, but she was very confused. Had she read the signs wrong? Were there even any signs to begin with? At times like these she wanted to ask Tami for help yet she was afraid that if Tami came and tried to help her that somehow Tami’s charm would work on Damiano and Diana would still end up with nothing. No, she had to do this on her own, she decided.
After the battle of the bands was over, a few stayed behind to talk with record labels about future arrangements. Diana started cleaning up, and washing and drying a few glasses, secretly listening in on a few conversations.
 “I liked what I saw out there. Let your agent call me and we will discuss your expansion in the United States.” Well, that sounded very good. Diana turned around to see who the band was that this man was talking to, but when she turned around she looked right into Damiano’s eyes.
 “I have been trying to get your attention all night”, he says shyly.  “Really? I thought so but I wasn’t sure”, Diana responds. Damiano raises his hand and scratches behind his head.  “I was wondering, you know. If maybe- ugh. Perchè è cosi difficile?” He mutters, not looking Diana in the eyes.  “Provalo in Italiano?” she suggests and Damiano’s eyes shoot up to meet hers.  “Cazzo. Parli Italiano?” He looks even more nervous now.  “Si, parlo Italiano.” He laughs at her answer.  “Vuoi uscire domani sera?” Diana nods her head, she honestly cannot stop smiling.  “I’d love to go out with you. Do you want me to pick you up at the hotel? That would be easier than you trying to find my house.”  “Yeah, sure. We’re staying at the Millwood Motel, it’s not too far from the airport.”  “Ah yes, I know that place. I’ll see you tomorrow then.” He leans over and kisses her cheek before leaving her to finish her work.
That night Diana barely slept. Did Damiano know any places here to take her to? Did she have to come up with a place? What if he was some weird guy? What if he was a murderer?! She sure was happy now that she didn’t give him her address. The following day she woke up around noon. She went to the kitchen and grabbed her Cona coffee maker, if she was to get through the day, she was going to need a big cup of coffee. She put water and coffee ground on the lower half of the pot and put it on the stove. She hated having to watch the coffee boil and couldn’t wait for better times when you would just have to push a button to get your coffee.
Seeing that she woke up around noon, it didn’t take long before Diana met up with Damiano. She asked him if he had anything specific in mind. Surprisingly, he did. He explained that he and his bandmates did a little sightseeing and they walked past a roller skating rink. Damiano always wanted to try that and he thought this would be perfect for their little date. Diana absolutely loved the idea and couldn’t wait till they got there.
Both of them were sad that the night had ended so quickly or so they thought. It was in fact 1 a.m. and they had already spend ten hours together. Diana brought Damiano back to the motel with her car and of course he couldn’t leave without planting a kiss on her lips. They kissed for a while before finally letting each other go.  “We’ll be leaving soon”, Damiano said and looked at their intertwined hands in his lap.  “Already? You just got here two days ago”, Diana complained. She just met him and now he is leaving already? She wasn’t prepared for that. She knew he was leaving at some point, he had to he didn’t live in the US, but still she had hoped for a little more time together.  “Maybe we’ll come back soon. We have a meeting with our agent and that record label guy tomorrow.”  “Could we meet up after? We should catch dinner together, I have another day off”, she suggested. Damiano agreed, kissed her one more time before leaving her car and making his way to his motel room.
The next day
Diana waited for Damiano in front of a large building. She was enjoying the sun on her face when she felt two arms coming from behind and hugging her on her stomach.  “Ciao, amore mio. Sei adorabile oggi”, Damiano said into her ear before kissing the side of her face.  “Ciao, you don’t look to bad yourself”, she said as she turned around. She grabbed his face in her hands and kissed him on his lips, his mates cheering them on in the background. “How did it go in there?” With that question Damiano’s face broke out in a wide grin. “What?”  “Amore, we’re staying here in the US. We got a record deal, we will be here for the entire year!” he shouts and all five of them jump in celebration. “I was going to tell you at dinner, but I just couldn’t wait anymore. We can be together, amore.” Diana broke out in tears, nodding her head, for she had never met a man who she loved more than Damiano. Her Italian lover boy.
For your sake (Basil x read x Ratigan) Chap2
Tumblr media
Home sweet home
A strong familiar scent of cheese hit your nose. Ah yes Mrs. Dudson, your beloved mother figure was cooking as usual. You knocked a few times before the door opened slowly from the inside.
The old woman was left sock. "Y/N...my child, you're back!" She cried out happily and leads you inside as quickly as possible, pulling you into a warm embrace. "We missed you so much, it's been three months since our last talk...I bet Mr. Basil knew you would come. That little rascal didn't tell me in propose I know so. You lost weight....you weren't eating well enough, you're all wet and....and-" He blabbing was cut off once you both broke the hug and her expression turned in a terrified one once her glanced down to her hands that were covered with spots of blood.
"For goodness sake! What on earth happened to you!?" She asked in light panic while she helped you take off your ruined coat.
"A stray cat, that's what happened...fortunately I was able to escape" You explained before you let out an exhaustive sight as she helped you sit on the sofa near the fireplace. "Where is Basil by the way?"
"He's been out with his new partner for a job...he'll be back shortly...at least that's what he told me when I saw him this morning. But the most important thing now is to clean up your injury, give you fresh clean clothes and of course something to eat" You smiled as she walked up the stairs that leads to the up floor.
*Time skip*
"Pfew, another case is finally solved. Dear god what a day" Dawson commented tiredly yet you could hear a bit of humor in the tone of his voice as well.
"Right you are, dear Dawson, right you are" The Detective brushed off his coat from the dust while he was walking proudly beside his partner. "Do let the satisfaction make you put your guard down any time soon. Remember, we always have to expect the unexpected at all times"
"Hmm, by the way, you're speaking...it seems you still have plans for tonight...is there something you wish to tell me, Basil?" The kind doctor questioned in curiosity and closed his umbrella as the final drops of rain led against the rocked ground.
"I am afraid you misunderstood me, my friend. We both need plenty of rest until the next case that might come. However, never forget to-'
"Always watch out for any possible trouble" They both finished the proposal, a thing that made them looked at each other with a knowing smile before they continued on their way back home.
*Time skip*
Mrs. Dudson looked outside from the window to see Basil and his partner who were finally back. "Quickly Y/N dear, hide!" The old woman whispered all excited already helping you up from your seat.
"Wait, it's not that easy" You giggled in amusement and made your way to the kitchen.
Once Basil entered inside with Dc Dawson following behind him both greeted Mrs. Dudson politely, in return she welcomed them back in a relieved manner they were all well and unharmed. Basil however noticed she acted more cheerful than usual.
"Oh my, is that blood I see over here?" Dawson asked while pointing with his finger over the small trails of blood against the sofa's leathered back.
There's when you came out from the kitchen slowly with a warm smile across your face. "Hey there, detective"
As soon as his ears perked the nostalgic sound of your voice he turned around to see you standing there with that smile....that smile he was lacking to see for so long and missed dearly.
His feet began to take steps towards you slowly but steadily as he had dropped his coat in the way, He stopped right before you with an unwritten expression while you both couldn't help but only stare, lost in each other eyes.
Your hand reached out to touch the side of his face but gasped as you felt his arms wrap around your waist and bringing you impossibly close against his body. You weren't able to control your actions either though when you found yourself hugging him back as tightly as he did with your face buried to his chest and your hands caressing his back.
His one hand moved up to be placed over the back of your head, which made you glanced up to him only for you to close your eyes and smile in bliss as you feel his slender fingers massaging you behind the ears.
A deep sight escaped from you, eyes still closed but eyebrows raised in surprise, relaxing right after you felt his lips planting sweet, tender kisses on your forehead. You giggle playfully and opened your eyes to see him staring down at you with your noses practically touching.
He moved his arms to pull you in an embrace once again, with his chin now resting upon your shoulder. "I've missed you so much..." Both of you managed to say at the same time witch made you chuckle.
Warm bodied
Here’s my fic for signpainter1 !! I hope you’ll enjoy it, I liked writing it ! :D
- @akuthecactus
                                                                                                                              “Let’s take a hot bath !”
Nezumi rose his eyes from the book he was reading, snuggled in an armchair, right beside the fireplace. It was freezing cold outside and both him and Shion could hear the West block wind hissing under the door and making their noses and fingers cold. Even the fire struggled to keep them warm and they were both wrapped in blankets. The white-haired boy looked at his roommate with big sparkling eyes as he often had when he had, usually not so, great ideas.
“What do you mean ?” Nezumi asked, wondering how Shion could think a bath was a luxury they could afford when their last dinner had been a clear soup.
“Well, we should take a warm bath ! I can take water from the river and fill one of Inukashi’s metal tubs, you know, the ones I wash the dogs in ? And then we can heat it on the fire and have a warm bath !” Shion explained excitedly as he got up from his seat, ready to put his plan into action.
Nezumi really thought it sounded childish and futile of Shion to offer carrying gallons of freezing water only to take a bath, but he had to admit the idea of immersing himself in hot water was appealing. He didn’t even remember when it last happened.
“Mh. Well, if you want to have fun carrying it and taking care of the fire while it heats, why not, I guess it can’t hurt. Try not to freeze your fingers while carrying it.” He said with a sigh and looked back at his book.
Shion grinned excitedly and put his warm clothes on. “I’ll be back soon !”
                                                                                                                              About an hour later, the heavy basement door opened and Shion pulled a metal tub in. He was panting and his nose and cheeks had taken a bright pink color. “Pfew, I made it ! Inukashi let me borrow the tub until tomorrow so we don’t need to worry about giving it back tonight.” The young man explained as he lifted the tub over fire, placing it carefully and standing back with a grin. Nezumi watched the scene unfold, genuinely surprised Shion had made it this far. I really should stop underestimating that boy, he thought. “Be careful not to heat it too much, I don’t want to boil in there.” He remarked, to what Shion nodded. “Don’t worry it will be perfect.” He assured.
As promised, Shion took good care of the fire, frequently plunging his hand in the water to stir it and evaluate the heat. In the meanwhile, Nezumi made some room for the tub. Not that he was as excited as his roommate, but he didn’t want any water on his books. The water took a while to heat properly but Shion eventually stood up and carried the steaming tub in the middle of the space Nezumi had struggled to make in all their mess. “Let’s get in before the water gets cold !” The white haired boy said as he pulled his clothes off without much embarrassment, revealing the red snake coiled around his body. He then carefully sat in the water in order to not spill any and folded his legs to make some room. It was large enough for a big dog, but small for an adult human. Fortunately, neither of the boys were tall. “It’s so warm, come in !” Shion said with a satisfied grin.
Nezumi hesitated. Of course, that bath was tempting, of course letting his cold body relax and let go of everything that made him nervous was enticing. His cold hands were already heated by the steam and his whole body longed for a good bath. But this also meant being unbelievably vulnerable, very close to Shion. He couldn’t explain why, but he was scared of doing it. He knew he could easily kill that boy with his bare hands, he was just so fragile and naïve. But Shion also had already managed to reach for Nezumi’s neck with such ease. It was worrisome.
His eyes met Shion’s. What a beautiful color, Nezumi thought each time he saw them. “I can turn around if you don’t want me to watch you.” Shion offered, his eyes still looking right in the silver ones.
Nezumi stayed quiet for a bit then looked down at the water, conflicted feelings fighting within him. Reason told him there was nothing to worry about and that it would be stupid to skip on this occasion. But his instinct told him not to go, that this boy was too weird, to unpredictable, too dangerous. Yet, another feeling, much harder to put a name on, pulled him towards Shion, towards the occasion on spending more time with him and seeing his smile. He rose his eyes from the water to meet Shion again. The latter smiled and closed his eyes. “I won’t open them until you get in. I promise.”
Nezumi stayed still for a bit more until slowly taking his clothes off. As promised, Shion didn’t open his eyes and simply leaned his head back. The black-haired boy considered it again, but the wind wrapped its claws around his naked body and he quickly put a foot in the water, then the second before lowering himself in. He leaned his back against the wall of the tub, fully hiding his scar.
The warmth quickly spread in the young man’s bones. He knew that feeling, he was sure he had already felt it before. But when ? Could such a futile feeling have stuck in the few pieces that were left from his childhood ? But it wasn’t futile. Being warm meant being alive.
“I’m in. You can open your eyes it’s fine.” He said.
Shion opened his eyes and grinned. “Isn’t it nice ?” He leaned back against the side of the tub, sighing with a satisfied look on his face. Cravat climbed up a pile of books and jumped on Shion’s hand, watching the water with curiosity. “It’s been a while since I last took a bath, it’s such a good feeling…” He went on, not waiting for Nezumi’s answer. Both of them had their legs tightly folded but their feet still touched although it didn’t really bother them.
A few minutes passed in comfortable silence. Nezumi kept his eyes open, watching Shion pet the mouse. Eventually, the white-haired boy started talking. “I’m sorry.” He simply said. Nezumi furrowed his brows.
“What are you sorry for ?”
“I know we already talked about it, but… sorry for sometimes being a burden to you. I’m trying to learn and be better, but sometimes it’s not enough. You saved my life more times than I can count and even if you said I saved your life, I only did it once. I’m costing you money, time and I’m dragging you into something impossible. I-“
“Stop.”
“I know, I know.” Shion looked down like a kid who had been scolded.
“I’m not saying this to make you shut up. Look at me.” Nezumi said firmly. Shion looked back up, locking his purple eyes in the silver ones. “Thank you for the bath. It was a good idea.” He said with a soft smile.
Shion smiled as well, Nezumi’s thanks were rare and genuine, which made them even more valuable. But it wasn’t enough to make him stop thinking, a bath couldn’t be enough to pay back what he owed Nezumi. He broke eye-contact to take the soap. “Let’s wash ourselves before the water gets cold.” He said while rubbing the soap in his hands, but was interrupted by thin fingers placed on his hands. Their eyes met again.
“Let me do it.” Nezumi looked serious. Shion’s confusion showed on his face.
“Let you do what ?”
“Let me wash your hair.” He said, still no hint of a smile. Shion couldn’t tell if Nezumi was making fun of him or if he was actually offering something. “Relax and let me do it.” He added.
Shion didn’t quite know what to answer so he simply closed his eyes. He felt Nezumi’s thin fingers slip through the almost transparent hair, gently pushing them away from the boy’s face. He then scooped some water with a bowl they usually used for soup and Nezumi slowly poured it on Shion’s head, protecting his face with his hand.
Even though he knew no water would get on his face, Shion kept his eyes closed. He would feel too nervous if he saw Nezumi’s face so close to his own, and it also helped him relax. The downside being he thought even more about what was happening. Why did Nezumi want to wash his hair all of a sudden ? Was it a West block cultural thing he didn’t know about ? Or was it really just because Nezumi wanted him to relax ? He always struggled to understand his friend so much it hurt. Each time he made a step towards him, it felt like he also took a step back. But this time, a big step had been made by Nezumi.
Once Shion’s hair was fully wet, Nezumi applied the soap, putting a light pressure on Shion’s scalp as he massaged it. Instantly, the white haired boy felt his whole body relax and a soft sigh escape his lips. Was he always so sensitive or was it simply because it was Nezumi doing it ? His fingers were so gentle and precise, slipping streaks of hair between them and covering each hair with soap. It felt like a lover’s kiss.
Shion couldn’t think about what this all meant. He couldn’t think about anything anymore. Nezumi seemed to have switched off his constant train of thought with the tip of his fingers. Now the only thing the boy could concentrate on was the sensation on his head and the warmth of the bath warming his bones.
The silence was only enhanced by the water dripping and the mice squeaking, but it was a comfortable, warm silence. They didn’t need words. In fact, Nezumi’s hands spoke louder. When Nezumi tucked Shion’s hair behind his hear, when he slipped his fingers up, caressed the scalp, carefully separating it in two sides, when his thumbs massaged Shion’s temples, it all said I love you in different ways.
Neither of them had really said it out loud. Of course, there was something between them. But the time wasn’t right. Maybe later. If they both survived in the correctional facility, maybe Shion would tell him.
Eventually, Nezumi rinsed Shion’s hair and got up of the tub. Shion’s eyes opened just a bit later as his friend was rubbing himself with a towel.
“Now there’s another thing I owe you…” He muttered.
“No there isn’t. There isn’t anything you owe me. This was a gift, learn to appreciate it.”
Shion smiled lightly and got out as well, rubbing himself vigorously with the towel before quickly putting his clothes back on. He was glad he had this idea. Next time it will be cold, he would definitely do it again.
Pikassos Island, going strong.
Hello everyone!
Long time no see, but I had adventures. First, I learned there was a tourist version of Assassin’s creed Odissey, which I didn’t know.
So I had to get it.
Not sure it was entirely a good idea... 12 hours of download, people. Yes, I know, just put the thing on and go to sleep, you’ll have your game in the morning. Yeah, no, what I have is small crap karma, so everytime I went to do something else, download f***ing conked. Lemme tell you, at 3 am and 97%, when the thing stopped for 10 good mins, I was VERY rude.
Said a lot of things I probably shouldn’t have, amongst which “I’ll never complain about TS3 again”
And crap karma and the EA Gods went “hold my beer”... And I couldn’t go in EIG anymore.
Which, not cool. I tend to do a couple hours in CAW, terrain painting and the like, and then wind down by building stuff. Tried taking out all the CC I got ince my last EIG, destroyed a perfectly servicable farm and the lot it was on, but no cookies.
Damm.
So, new save (thank the Gods CAW is a separate program!), and I’m incrementaly putting some CC back. I’ll just add the deco stuff and furniture later. Pfew!
Tumblr media
But I did make progress at last. About 1/3 of the big Island is all done and ready to be build on, smallish island is terrain painted.
Tumblr media
I think I’m going to put Dyonisos and Aphrodite there, with the local wine making industry. In short, a place to get hammered, especially if you cross path with  Hephaistos looking for his vagrant spouse.
in other parts, the first fishing hamlet:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this place needs more nets, fish, pots, and alltogether general stuff, but it will come later. For now, just whishing my (future) fisherman and his family a good catch!
Next, Poseidon temple/spa complex, with gymnasium and swimming pool (mermaids optional)
See you soon!
PS: Assassin’s Creed discovery is extremely beautiful, and I’m learning things in the guided tours. But in case you’re interested, be warned, it’s a graphic card devourer.
can you rec the most SMUTTIEST kaisoo fic you’ve ever read?? ;)
This is a list (not all cause the list would be neverending jhgfjh) of our faves that we could think of, but you can also check out smuttiest fics that were previously recced here and here ;)
Admin Teacup
Naughty Boy- Jongin visited his daddy at work ;)
Fly Away- Jongin finds an angel in a church and they do some unholy things
Deep Tissue- Ice skater Kyungsoo gets a massage from Jongin.
Curious- Jongin explores the world of master and slave relationships with his new boyfriend Kyungsoo.
Back up dancer- Jongin is kyungsoo’s back up dancer and his little crush evolve so to something more.
Vanilla- Kyungsoo takes care of hybrid Jongin who may or may not be attracted to him.
Flardull Smorboll. - Soo accidentally summons an incubus while building an ikea closet ;
Admin Cookie
If this part gets suddenly dry, it’s because apparently, smut only works for me if it’s in a gOOD context…
spreading inside of me -  Professors!AU by verseau. Slut shaming and dom/sub. I mean, it’s awesome. Hella witty, Kyungsoo is such a wharismatic mofo and Jongin loves his humiliation. Guiltless freaky times because 15k.
Glucose Guardian (That’s Mighty Big of You) - Uhm, one of the first KD fics I’ve ever read and that kinda scared me away from sugar daddy!AUs. Now that I’m more “mature”, this is actually really hot and kinky.
The Internet is for Porn -  The newest high school!AU addition to my top KD favourites. There are so many smut scenes and Kyungsoo is a camboy and Jongin a really horny dude, yet, it feels balanced? sweet? hilarious? What is that Indigomini soonbaenim, sorcery? GOLD.
Juice Pouch - I extremely love how original and crack-ish this fic is. I think it’s a classic by now, because vampire!Soo and dad!Jongin exchanging favors for survival is just perfectly unsettling, funny, sexy and heartwarming. My go-to work for great (spicy) times.
Lawyer Up My Ass - Legally KaiSoo - Yes, so, the fics that made me realise semi-public sex is superior. And Kyungsoo seduces his hot boss. And they’re both smart and successful (and hella horny).
Amuse-Bouche - Chefs!AU and OCs.This one is really long and I still haven’t finished it, but the amount of smut, pfew. Also, my first open relationship fic. Therefore, actual angst warning and watch out for your hormones, this one’s wickedly addicting.
Admin Moon
(i totally have a thing for pining or hate to love relationships that lead to  smut so the fics here are related to that)
(before the night ends) come see me by seawitcher - After waking up from his century-long nap, the last thing Kyungsoo wants to deal with is a newborn werewolf. Too bad Jongin doesn’t make it easy for him. a classic.
Lay your Hands on me by lotusk - CEO!Kyungsoo just wants to relax when he goes for his weekly massage but masseur!Jongin’s massages are anything but relaxing. a personal favourite;
Water is wet  by celerydragon  - tentacle!au Kyungsoo is an alien; a very hot alien
Admin J:
nothing scares you about me and you - well well if this isnt another gem from verseau :~) roommates kaisoo are just friends, bestfriends, but jongin is so oblivious and keeps hooking up with other alphas even though he loves kyungsoo's scent and kyungsoo also has his fair share of omegas which riles jongin to no end, yet he won't admit they're made for each other. the plot is A+ but the smut is also nice and filthy hehfshf
Flesh to Fabrication - kyungsoo orders a cleaning maid android baek but receives a sexdroid kai instead. tsundere!soo and h0rny kai is always fun to read :oo (top!kai)
Curious - (top!soo) kyungsoo and jongin are dating and jongin just discovers his boyfriend's secret kinks (d/s, bdsm, toys, punishment, spanking :)) but also their rls development is cute :3
Greetings readers...
Despite this blog being about my owner’s voluptuous body, the farm she lives in is still a business that needs to turn on so the residents, I included, can pay their bills and fill in the fridge (and the tummies).
Funny events can happen at times too, often to the dismay of one or another. This lately happened to maud, as her dress often happens to rip and tear due to a little gain of weight that happens from time to time.
But to the people concerned, don’t worry, the incident is long over, as the letter from her joyful sister, pinkie pie, I am about to transcript to you is demonstrating...
(any errors or spellchecks have been kept as it was in the letters to keep the authenticity of the experience for the readers. Only the passages that can be considered out of subject or violating one’s intimacy has been replaced by the word “redacted” between [ ] )
Dear Ms. Pie
After an incident implying our head of service M. Yooper Chevalier Lite, a businessman for our firm and a provocative dress from one of your colleagues reminding the former a “vulgar poor tasted joke that is borderline classifiable as an insulting and racist to a certain minority”. We have decided to cut short our relation with the PIE family rock farm until further notice...
As we are trying to implant our firm based on the commercialization of luxury minerals to multiple parts of Equestria, we’re thinking that your company wasn’t the type we need despite your farm producing a competent quality we need to satisfy our needs. This is why we are now working on a contract with another firm near your location, the Sledge family mine, Rockville, W.equestria. We hope you can understand our change of direction...
We are wishing for your company a good day are we are thanking for understanding our change in direction
cordially...
4. ?, 7.,13.19. ,24. for Hi I'm not from U.S.!
4. favourite dish specific for your country?
Hmm, that’s kinda hard. I’m addicted to spaghetti bolognaise. This may not sound very Belgian, but the Belgian variety is my drug.
For more actual traditional meals, I always love “frietjes me stovers”
We all know Belgian fries are the best. This combined with slow cooked meat in a Belgian beer sauce is just a treat for them taste buds.
7. three words from your native language that you like the most?
I’ll try and think of three random ones .. (I’ve almost completely forgotten my language ngl)
“Koddig” meaning cute
“Keppe” meaning dearest / someone whom you like but also wants your affection in return (can be negative like someone who’s a bootlicker) Often used as a word for a loved one.
“Geestig” meaning funny, enjoyable
13. does your country (or family) have any specific superstitions or traditions that might seem strange to outsiders?
Ephron (from another province) thinks that our “grabbing wood” thing is weird.
It’s just like, when you say something along the lines of “I really love this object/thing it has been so good for a long while” Whilst you’re saying this you have to “oet vastoen” (hold wood) to make sure it stays that way. Otherwise it will break down/become bad. It’s a silly superstition but it’s always good to remind oneself that good things can come to an end and it’s better to appreciate them and wish for them to last longer.
I do think the hold wood superstition is also a thing in English?
The best part is when you can’t find any wood in reach so you hold your own head and claim it is filled with sawdust so it counts.
19. do you like your country’s flag and/or emblem? what about the national anthem?
Yeah it’s fine. I love the national slogan “Eenheid maakt macht / L’union fait la force” (unity gives strength) it’s very IDIC of us.
I suppose I like the anthem too. Too much about loyalty to the king but that’s how it goes I guess. I’m one of the extremely few people that actually knows it by heart cause I learned it of my own volition.
24. what other nation is joked about most often in your country?
The Dutch (stupid and loud) and the French (arrogant af), but thanks to Brexit the Brits have taken the new number one spot.  (I’m talking about stereotypes here pls if you’re dutch or french don’t attack me. brittish people: you deserve it)
Pfew that was a lot!! Thank you, my most exquisite jawlined friend!!
Overland to Tokyo Day 3
Hello everyone. After just four hours of sleep I arrived at Budapest yesterday. Even thought the Flixbus did arrive in the end. You still feel like people feel after they arrived in the city.
The next stupid thing was, that the ATM took my "no" as "yes" and transformed 100€ into money that I now had to spend. Without me demanding anything for money. Needless to say that I payd 17€ just as booking fee. Now thats a way to start!
Tumblr media
(stockphoto that I totally own)
I took a cap to the area round the Train station. The Keleti Station itself is amazing and got an modern basement layer that connects smoothly to everything around of it. Also the underground. The people are friendly and so far there was no trouble ahead.
In the end I wasted another 18k for lock up my bags. Thats insane expensive but. Too tiered to bargain... Keleti should have an public shower. But that one was out of order. Urgs.
Tumblr media
(one of the Budapest Keleti entrace Halls. Fancy!)
So I started to kill alooot of time. The smal coffee shops near the station are an nice place to do so. I also walked around till my injured left food told me, that If I continue, I would not fit into the shoe anymore.
I decided to get rid of the remaining Money by changing it back. In Keleti was an Terminal. But before I could speak to them, an young guy asked me if I would like to buy euro. And well. I did. He had by far the best rate in the entire city and since I grew up with euro I was able to be pretty sure, its real money. And if not - I would had to waste it anyway. So I got 40€ of my euros back. Thank you, unknown money laundry man! Too bad he also had no shower to offer :/
Back on track
Tumblr media
(Klumpi in action!)
SO. 4 more Hours till the Train would arrive. I booked my ticket online on the MÀV homepage for bout 35€ with the result that I had not known a Track number. So where to get this number? Well. You can camp in front of the HUGE display and wait till your connection popps up. But I wanted to nap on the right track. Another thing is, that the tracks have ticket-terminals that also allow you to display when trains arrive and depart. And they have an (hidden?) touch feature that allows you to scroll down. It was Track 1. I was even able to see that the train will arrive 2 hours later.
So I went to that track. Yes. It came 2 hours early. But you cannot get into it right now, because they need to change the segments from [locomotive][sitting wagons][sleeping ones] into an order with the locomotive beeing the last one. This took time. So long I tried to find my Wagon by number. Let say, that the sleeping wagons DO have different numbering. You can (or cannot) find it in the windows. It has the size of an Post-it. I decided to take an lower bed in a 4 ppl apartment and seeing how narrow the 6ppl ones are .. Pfew. You did well, past me. You did well!
On board!
I hope you printed the tickets. Sure they have an QR Code and you can see them in the MAV App. But that means nothing. They want, they demand to collect the ticket as a paper. It is generally an good Idea to always print the tickets. Just because an mobile could fail you. Or get stolen.
There are plenty of different Night-Trains from Budapest to Bucharest every day. At least 3. I took this one because I liked the time schedule most, and to my surprise it was a bit cheaper.
NOW I should find out WHY.
Tumblr media
This was not the Night Train from Vienna (Wien) to Bucharest. That one with the dining Wagon. The Showers and new Toilets. That one from all the youtube videos.
No this one was an different one. The older ones ;) So no food Wagon. No water dispensers. No new Toilets. No usb. No Wifi. Not even power plugs and not even light. Yes. Not even light. The 40 years old pulp on the ceiling was illuminating nothing but itself.
Ever had to reject border-policemen asking for more light? No? This is a one in a lifetime chance to get away with it - lol.
But there was Air-Conditioning. It was loud like an main road in the rush hour and you could NOT switch it off. Remarkably there was almost now air coming out of it.
BUT whatever. The first thing all of us did was taking an 3h nap. Looks like really everyone that a rough night before. Then I met Alex. An nice Englishman that lived in Budapest. Since the 3th person, from Poland, was not able to communicate with us, we decided that on night we would open the window, and sleep head on to the opened door. Hopefully having enough air.
We did not. Because it started to rain and blow so hard, that you had to close the window. The tracks got significant worse in Romania. May times the whole train got hit SO hard by something on the ground, that you wake up and believe that this will be the end.
And it was so fucking noisy. Ive seen a v-tuber that complained that suddenly THIS train he took (in Kaszachstan) was very loud and he don't knew why. Okay. Now I understand him.
Still love sleeping trains. In ear headphones ftw. Oh an, the mobile network never went down for longer than minutes. Unbeliveable. In germany you are offline after what? 10 Minutes on track? Gotta love this.
Still alive
Tumblr media
(Still had no cake)
Anyway. I'm on schedule. I'm alive. An little bit exhausted but still not fed up with being on the tracks. Lets hope ill find a shower soon <.<
Oh and, I spend 50€ yesterday (ticket plus foods) this money also could get you an Lego Stitch 43249.
Tumblr media
(cute but stupidly expensive)
10: Inspiration for Muse: watching fanmade videos about the characters on youtube. Yep, bless you all for making those. Also music and some horror movies for my current story.
11: Dream Job: Something with computers ?
12: Meaning Behind Username: Pfew well, I often find inspiration in old dreams I have had and by writing the stories down it's kind of passing along that dream. And the more people read my stories, the longer the dream exists. It's cheesy, I know.
I'm going to tag @fuchsiagrasshopper  @shes-a-plum @marvelmayo@superflashvengers   feel free to do this :) Or ignore it ;)
Great Artwork, but...
I like pretty artwork. I'm shallow like that, but I do - if a graphic novel (or a movie or tv show, for that matter) looks pretty, I'm willing to forgive all sorts of tomfoolery and nonsense present in the writing and the plot. Sometimes I'm willing to accept that something is, like Chris Hemsworth's character in Ghostbusters, so pretty, but so, so stupid.
Tumblr media
Nothing wrong with being a little shallow every now and again! Of course, it's great when a tv/book/show/graphic novel/visual medium of some sort etc. can have be both a) gorgeous and b) have a fantastic story, but for the most part you can have one without the other and be perfectly content. Sometimes, though...
Sometimes you encounter something that looks as though it's going to have both gorgeous artwork and a kickass story, only to realize you've got the artwork and a fantastic concept but...not much by way of story. More than anything, it's just...disappointing.
Which brings me to The City on the Other Side by Mairghread Scott, illustrations by Robin Robinson.
Tumblr media
As you can see, it looks awesome. It has a ton of the elements of stories that I love: parallel worlds, early 20th century San Francisco, the Faerie world having an effect on the real world (like causing the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake), pastel colors, mushroom people...I started The City on the Other Side  with pretty high expectations. I mean, just look at the illustrations!! They're fantastic! Wait...they look kind of familiar...why does Robin Robinson sound so familiar -
Wait.
Wait.
Holy shit, is she The Gorgonist?
The The Gorgonist?
The same The Gorgonist whose artwork makes up 90% of the stuff I have up on my walls at work that I stare at ever day as I count down the minutes to freedom? Whose stuff I've been buying every year at RCCC for the past like, 5 years?! (it's like, four 5x7 prints for $20 and every year I go and buy four more prints and add them to my walls so I can stare at them at work).
I fricking LOVE The Gorgonist! I have so many of her prints! I've got some of her Alice in Wonderland prints, a Hobbit print, her Doctor Who prints, her literary prints, I've got a mini and a giant one of her Sherlock prints, some of her just random cool nature prints and some of her Studio Ghibli prints...Holy...Jesus...what?!
Sorry, I literally did not realize Robin Robinson was The Gorgonist until I sat down to write this post and did some background research into her and Mairghread Scott. Oh God, that just...aagh, that just makes this worse! Nooo, aagggh, why!! One of my Favorite Ever artists and I'm going to sit here and be like "well, here's my snooty non-published-writer-not-even-a-proper-librarian-yet-opinions-on-why-I-thought-the-story-was-sub-par."
Aaagh, forgive me, oh fabulous The Gorgonist! Next year at RCCC I'll up my 5x7 purchases to 8! I've got plenty of wall left at work! I'll buy more prints from the etsy store, I swear!!
Agh, and Mairghread Scott is amazing, too! Just look at her resume! She's written for Marvel and DC in both comics and television! She's written a pretty awesome webcomic!
And the worst thing is, I'm still not quite sure how to pronounce Mairghread. Gaelic names destroy me every time. Gaelic and French, so many letters you don't pronounce! Is it pronounced...Margie? Margred? Is it anything like Margaret?
I am a horrible, horrible, evil human being. I can't believe I'm going to sit here and criticize these two awesome ladies. Forgive me, Ms. Scott. Forgive me, Ms. Robinson. You guys are awesome and I wholeheartedly recommend everything you've ever done to everyone, including The City on the Other Side.
Ok, so...here goes...So technically I'm cheater-cheater-pumpkin-eater-ing here because this is a review I wrote for one of my graduate-level MLIS courses. Yes, I reviewed a NetGalley ARC for school. Any time I can make something work for funsies and for schoolsies, I'm game.
Isabel has lived a very sheltered life - she's expected to be there, but not there, to be a proper little lady. Isabel's mother is distant and her sculptor father doesn't seem to have much time for her. But everything changes when Isabel inadvertently steps through the veil separating the human world from the world of the Fae, and right into the middle of a war between the Seelie and the Unseelie. Isabel must return a magical necklace to the Seelie before the war destroys not just the Faerie world, but her world as well.
The artwork is whimsical, done mainly in soft pastels that give the story a dream-like quality. However, the story is thin and the characters underdeveloped. The plot felt as though it’d been compressed from a longer, multi-volume graphic novel series into just one volume. The story moved too quickly and at no point are we allowed to get to know any of the characters. Even Isabel was a fairly bland character, with very little personality outside of the sadness at her absent parents (who, likewise are not very well developed). It’s a shame, because the artwork is truly remarkable, and the story could’ve been captivating, had it been given room enough to breathe.
Pfew. Writing professional-sounding reviews is exhausting. Thank God for tumblr where I can be as lax with standards as I please.
Anyway - I really do think The City on the Other Side should've been an ongoing series. It felt forcibly compressed into one volume. It should've been a webcomic or a serial, so the stories and characters could've taken as long as they liked to develop. As it is, in one volume, it feels rushed and unfinished.
I have hope, though. The version I read is an advanced reader's copy, which is not technically a finished copy of the book. The real thing doesn't come out until...uh...(frantically looks it up) next April. Perhaps some stuff will be changed by then? Maybe we'll get the multi-volume story that we need rather than having it crammed into one book? We shall see.
RECOMMENDED FOR: Graphic novel fans, fans of The Gorgonist or anyone who just likes good artwork, fans of fantasy stories, middle grade graphic novel readers.
NOT RECOMMENDED FOR: Critics, people who can't appreciate good artwork when they see it.
RATING:
Artwork: 5/5
Story: 2/5
How bad I feel for giving the story a low rating: 5/5
RELEASE DATE: April 24, 2018
