There's this organization called Chunka Luta Network, currently they are directly helping the traditional families on Porcupine get wood delivered and fill their propane tanks, and to make sure that happen they are working with tribes in Oklahoma.
For background, this org is founded by Sungmanitu, an Oglala Lakota person, their family is from Pine Ridge reservation, after years of making sure their family survive every winter by sending wages back home, they decided to start a winter drive to get coats, hats, a uhaul, wood, and hotels. Now the momentum has been rolling and they are making more tangible impact and carrying out more and bigger projects! <:)

“This week, temperatures on the rez will be dropping below zero and won't return to positive for several days. It is forecasted to get as low as -27 BEFORE wind chill is considered.
This is expected to be a very difficult time, especially for those who are without proper heating sources. Most homes rely on wood-burning stoves but firewood is in short supply and hard to acquire. It can also be very expensive. We have already begun to receive many calls looking for assistance - but we need your help.
One truckload of firewood costs about $200 - that is all it would take to get a family through these incredibly cold days ahead and prevent serious injury.
Thank you for supporting One Spirit and the Lakota people of Pine Ridge Reservation.”

Just realized that the 50th anniversary of the Wounded Knee Occupation started like a week ago. (Feb 27 - May 8, 1973) For 71 days, 200 Oglala Sioux and AIM activists occupied the town of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in opposition to the corruption of tribal chairman Richard Wilson and centuries of failure by the US Government to honor treaties with native peoples. The town would be besieged by federal forces (US Marshals, FBI, SD National Guard) and GOON (a paramilitary force run by Richard Wilson). 5 people were killed, and 16 wounded during the siege. On May 5, an agreement was reached between leaders of the occupiers and the feds. By May 8, the town had been evacuated, and the US Government seized control. The occupation saw significant public support and helped bring light to issues facing indigenous peoples within the US. Issues they continue to face and fight to this day, 50 years later. (For example, there are around 4200 to 5700 unsolved cases involving murdered or missing indigenous women, as of 2021)

Nicholas Black Elk: Medicine Man, Missionary, Mystic
Author: Michael F. Steltenkamp
Book: 1/1
Genre: biography
Summary: Nicholas Black Elk: Medicine Man, Missionary, Mystic, tells the full interpretive story of Black Elk. Steltenkamp shows that Black Elk was not the native traditionalist others have depicted him to be, but rather a religious thinker with a positive outlook that merged Lakota ideas with Christianity. This text tells of Black Elk’s travels, visions, experience in the Battle of Little Big Horn, and the way he led his people along the path of God.
Review: I immediately pulled this book off the shelf when I saw it’s title. Quick fun fact: I attend school in the Black Hills area of South Dakota and I have personally hiked Black Elk Trail in Custer State Park. It is absolutely gorgeous. Since I have been in some of places that Black Elk has walked, I was eager to learn about his story. Steltenkamp’s telling of Black Elk’s story provided in-depth details, as well as parts of his story that many authors did not want to tell. Previous biographies about Black Elk only tell of his pre-Christian life while practicing Lakota traditions. However, Black Elk wanted his story as a missionary and his family’s involvement in their church to be told. Steltenkamp gives the reader the background of other authors’ stories and this lack of truly understanding Black Elk as a Christian. Steltenkamp fully immerses the reader into Black Elk’s life as a medicine man, heyoka, missionary, and an important figure in the church. This book contains lots of information, some parts more entertaining than others; I would recommend this book to anyone who loves history, non-fiction, and learning about other cultural experiences.
I included photos I took at Black Elk Peak, enjoy the view!
Rating: 5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
