Question

Mr. Canary -

First of all, thank you for not scrolling past this. I'm sure you can't get away from the questions - questions asked by people who positively suck at art (which accounts for approximately 97.36% of the earth's population), all of which sound more or less alike. I don't suck at art, and I even have pictures to prove it!

HOWEVER, I suck big time at drawing human figures, gestures, and such. I'm sixteen and I may be publishing a novel next year. (The details are still being worked out, and I don't even have a contract yet, so don't get too excited.) Anyhow, I want to learn to draw my characters, and I want to learn how to draw them in your fabulous style.

What are your top 3 tips for aspiring character illustrators?

I don’t think I’ve ever tried Steph Brown before!!! 💜✨ Here she is in an adorable outfit I saw on someone at my local coffee shop. I am currently studying the style of @princecanary , because there are a lot of similarities in my own sketch preferences, and I wanna learn more about what exact stylistic choices make my brain do the Happy Thing. The style of Wayne Family Adventures is so freaking cute; hence the reference practice. (Permission was asked, fear not.)

The splatoon piece (I mention, because I saw your reblog tags on it haha) I actually just looked at the official promo art and tried my hand at emulating that style--with a bit of my own flare added. Who ever does those illustrations is [[chef kiss]] SO damn good, they've got a loose, confident style of mark making that I can only dream of haha!

Here are some things about me.... ✝️ I'm a Christian! Protestant. No particular denomination, just a broken person working to grow and improve. 🙏 😅 I am socially awkward and have social anxiety so please have patience with me. Also working on getting "officially" diagnosed for ADHD. 🎨 As for art, I use clip studio paint, graphite, manga pens, watercolours, and acrylic. For music I use Bandlab, Garageband, and FL Studio 🖌️ 🐉I love drawing my OCs and making my own stories. Fantasy is my favourite genre, but I also love urban fantasy, so you might see a lot of that! (Urban fantasy is like fantasy but in a more modern setting instead of medieval times!) ⚔️🩸I am not afraid to draw "darker" things such as serious subject matter, blood, angst, etc. There will be NO NSFW here, but not all of my art or writings will be sunshine and rainbows :) 🩸 !!MY CURRENT PROJECTS!!:

I really like your art style! Did you draw inspiration from anywhere?

I remember having an incredible love for the art of PrinceCanary and Phobso, I think they were my main inspirations for my art style! Later I got inspiration from many movies, series and animated projects. Even cinematic video games. I love splash art and it was very influential for a while too. Concept art from old Disney movies are also a latent inspiration for style and gesture. At this point, every time I finish a movie I think: "I have to draw something inspired by this!" XD

22. what inspires you

oh. SO much. you, for one. HEEHEE. also, just like...everything..... music inspires me a Lot, so when i'm creating art i have to have a specific playlist going on while i draw. this is why i have 800 playlists on Spotify.

i also have a specific list of tumblr artists who have been very influential to my style, and who inspire me to this day:
