"GERMAN OFFICER IMPRISONED FOR ASSAULTING CRIPPLE," The Inland Sentinel (Kamloops). December 29, 1913. Page 4. --- Lieutenant Baron von Forstner was sentenced to forty-three days imprisonment by a court-martial at Strassburg, Germany, for having assaulted a lame cobbler during the recent trouble at Zabern in Alsace Lorraine.
The charge against him was wilful assault and causing great bodily harm by the illegal use of his sabre.
The sentence of imprisonment la a penitentiary involves the loss of his commission as an officer by Lieutenant Baron von Forstner.
It was while passing with a section of the Ninety-fifth Infantry regiment through Dettweiler. He wounded the cripple in the head with his sabre for making out expressions regarded as offensive. Top right: THE 99TH REGIMENT OF INFANTRY MARCHING THROUGH THE TOWN OF ZABERN.
Bottom right: THE CRIPPLE SABRED BY LIEUTENANT FORSTNER
[Reporting on the Zabern Affair in Alsace-Lorraine.]

I was held by a young soldier. 'Major', said the poor lad, '"I am dying, and I shall never see my regiment again; but I ask you to tell my comrades that the Yankees have killed but not conquered me.'

[ID: This post has two images. Image one: A bust screenshot of the Unnamed Prussian Officer from Guts and Blackpowder, laying down on a wood floor with a shocked expression and blood splattered on his face from his throat. He is wearing a standard black infantry officer uniform from the Napoleonic Wars, with a black collar and white buttons. Additionally, he is wearing a shako hat with a silver badge on the front and a large white plume on the top. Image two: A digital redraw of the previous image, with lighter colors. The only changes made to the Unnamed Prussian Officer's design here are a simplified uniform and longer black hair. End ID.]

Once, when a bottle of wine had gone over, and the red gushed out on to the tablecloth, the officer had started up with an oath, and his eyes, bluey like fire, had held those of the confused youth for a moment. It was a shock for the young soldier. He felt something sink deeper, deeper into his soul, where nothing had ever gone before. It left him rather blank and wondering. Some of his natural completeness in himself was gone, a little uneasiness took its place. And from that time an undiscovered feeling had held between the two men.
— D. H. Lawrence, "The Prussian Officer" (1914)

First draft of Character designs for Immanuel von Hinden and Büch von Weiß; antagonists from my pre-ww1 Prussian Military drama, 'Moth'. I considered making Büch clean shaven, as he has a secret dislike for the Kaiser it seems strange that he would model his mustache that way, but it is a secret, after all, and he really doesn't look right without it. This style of mustache has been associated with villains for some time, but it was so common in Germany in this period that dear read should be used to seeing it by the time these villains arrive. In Moth this mustache is mostly used to depict the generational divide between senior officers and junior ones.
Here Immanual's sword is pushed against this leg and might look a bit strange because of the angle. My decision to give Büch a dagger, rather than a sword, was a visual experiment which I probably won't sustain, a ceremonial sword is more intimidating.
Here is an excerpt of their introduction in the script so far:

Ok, so this gif from @gifshistorical came across my dash and as Daphne’s turn of the wrong century-looking bloomers fed into my increasingly frequent thoughts of « wow, some of the underwear technology in Bridgertonland is certainly miles ahead » (Kate was wearing what looked more like 1940’s French knickers in s2, their shirts seem to button all the way down etc) and then it came to me:

Bridgerton is set in someone’s game of civilisation!
Whoever is playing has probably given up on a domination victory, so that’s why , even though this is set in the 1810’s, none of the several younger sons in the family seem to be even considering a military career.
And by not prioritising the military technologies they are moving very quickly forwards in certain areas of fashion technology (side note: I really want some sort of fashion history expansion of Civ now where you can actually choose these), so they have access to zippers and knickers and aniline dyes and plastic sequins. They haven’t got any « hair up or down » or « difference between daywear and eveningwear » civics in play, but they there’s some sort of Victorian sex ed for girls thing instead.
This also explains the « oh, no, we totally used to have racism too, but we solved that like 15-20 years ago » vibe - that’s when they got the totally colourblind society-civic!

Kuroda is the type of person to read things like Fight Club and "The Prussian Officer" and wholeheartedly relate to them but only on a very superficial level. Straight up thinks "oh yes I too am so desperate to be physical with men who I consider my equal or even above me that I will abandon morality, this makes sense to me" and doesn't examine it at all.

Learning about the Polish situation after the partitions is so funny because you learn that after one of the Uprisings when everything from language to culture got banned in the Prussian part of the Annexation, (it got banned everywhere but let's ignore that for a moment) some Germans started to get interested in that because "why is it banned"?
And I just imagine the situation where poor Gilbert is just sitting in his study or just some office space doing paperwork maybe, and teenager Ludwig just comes in and is like:
Ludwig/Germany "I wanna learn Polish"
Gilbert/Prussia "You what now?"
It's the greatest revenge of Feliks.
