It occurs to me that some of you empty spaces robotgirls who like conversion stories, particularly the zoomers among you, may not have seen the stroggification sequence from Quake 4
Enjoy.

The Quake series is weird because it has three different identities (Ranger's interdimensional funtimes (Quake I and its expansions), the Strogg War (II, IV and Enemy Territory), and the multiplayer subseries (III, Live and Champions)), and only one of them (namely the multiplayer subseries) is explicitly connected to the other two.

Quake Soundtrack Collection: “Slipgate”
Tumblr media
I still remember how I felt playing Quake for the first time. Coming from a few years playing Doom and Doom II, Quake was pretty much the same storyline and such, but it just felt... darker. Grittier. More hardcore. And damn, was the movement smooth and the lighting effects next level. Multiplayer was balls nuts.
Quake quickly spun into a massive, well-respected franchise all of its own - Some of the older titles and their alterations are still the go-to for a lot of FPS fanatics!
The original title shipped with an atmospheric, Industrial nightmare courtesy of Trent Reznor. You know, the Nine Inch Nails guy. The wonderfully sadistic nail gun weapon in the game? Yeah, it even had Nine Inch Nails' logo on it.
However, if you wanted to, Quake supported playing tracks from the CD in your drive instead, which was really radical. I often played Quake while listening to White Zombie's "Astro Creep: 2000." Fighting Chthon to "Super-Charger Heaven?" Perfection. DEVIL MAN! DEVIL MAN!
At one point, a group named Sonic Mayhem released an album called "Methods of Destruction." It was meant to be played in this way, replacing the original soundtrack to Quake with a fiercer, harder hitting experience. And it was a hit - Their sound was such a great fit that they got to compose for Quake II and invited their friends Front Line Assembly to help make some tracks as well, culminating in that band also making music for the series. Another notable composer in the mix was the person behind the Quake games for the Nintendo 64, the amazing Aubrey Hodges, who was of course no stranger to FPS soundtracks.
Every official release and Mission Pack is included here, but honestly... Why stop there? I'm also sharing my collection of music from the most famous total conversions, alterations, and unofficial packs. They definitely deserve love too.
As games in the series or related material reaches the 15 year old mark (like "Quake Live" will in 2025), I will add those to this archive as well.

So my crack theory to connect Quake and Quake II (aside from the multiverse of Quake 3/Champions) is that the Strogg are the humans from Quake I.
Tumblr media
That's why they use the same "winged skull" symbol from the Military Base levels in Quake. Humanity dealt with continuing assaults by the Outer Gods by cyberneticizing themselves, but still ended up going mad. Eventually, they threw the entire planet Earth back hundreds of years in time to attack and assimilate their own ancestors to stop them from inventing the Slipgate in the first place.
Tumblr media
Past Earth just saw this as an invasion of suspiciously-humanoid aliens, and found the completely insane cyborgs surprisingly easy to resist and counter-attack.

Quake 4 (2005, Raven Software)
For this playthrough I used a mod called Impacts and Injury, created by Valorin. It's a modified combination of Sikkmod + Rivarez Mod, I'd highly recommend it. https://nexusmods.com/quake4/mods/516

Something i don't think i've posted here was these concept arts for a cancelled Q4 expansion:
From what i heard, they were going to do a lot with exploring the Strogg's background.
In general, some of the designs here are cool.
Not just art, there's even screenshots of models in there too.

My project with the kids for Term 4 2023 - our project brief is 'Monstrification.' We're taking an original or existing character and monstrifying them. I took my OC Kay and turned her into a Strogg Berserker from Quake. - Luke. #fezilla #studiofezilla #digitalart #quake #artwork #anime #arts #digitaldrawing #digitalart #Devildogs #NeonKnights #Strogg #manga #gaming #FanArtFriday #retroshooter #cyberpunk

Good/Great Games That Sorely Needed Expansion Packs/DLC Stories, if not More (And What They Might Have Entailed):
X-Wing Alliance (tying up the loose end that is Uncle Antan, whilst maybe extending to the Liberation of Coruscant)
Quake 4 (eliminating the remnants of the Strogg while fighting what may be fellow humans sent to hunt you down)
Return to Castle Wolfenstein+Enemy Territory (just more B.J. Blazkowicz adventures)
Star Wars: Squadrons (modding, more ships like the Assault Gunboat and E-Wing, and a far better and more expanded story campaign akin to X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter: Balance of Power)
Battlezone II: Combat Commander (probably cleaning up General Braddock's remaining yet fanatical forces, with an alternate campaign showing the full extermination of the Scion)
Batman: Arkham Origins (basically, a singleplayer campaign between Batman and Dick Grayson Robin based on the premise of the now defunct multiplayer)
Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000 (just more missions for the Colonial Marine, Alien, and Predator; maybe even more modding tools)
Original War (an Arab campaign that explains the main game's plot holes, among others)
SiN: Wages of Sin (perhaps an alternate timeline where the elusive Elexis Sinclaire was actually killed, thus preventing the existence of the lackluster episodic sequel)
Valiant Hearts: The Great War (an extension involving the American intervention, the fall of czarist Russia and the rise of Communism, and the end of WW1)
Command and Conquer: Tiberium Wars+Kane's Wrath (basically, Kane's Wrath-like takes for the GDI and the Scrin, with maybe a bonus campaign involving CABAL remnants and an actual crossover with Red Alert 2 by way of a Nod agent about to be sent back in time named Yuri)
Brutal Legend (even I can't think which)
Singularity (mayhaps an interquel involving another time traveller who may or may not be helping the protagonists)
Impossible Creatures (again, I can't think of anything)
Shadowrun Returns (Dragonfall and Hong Kong are great, but really, we need more)
BattleTech 2018 (same as Shadowrun Returns)
Mad Max (more adventures, vehicles, and franchise fanservice, and I don't mean the skin kind)
Halo Wars (just some side stories over the course of the Human-Covenant War)
Total War: Shogun 2 (Mongol invasion, 'nuff said)
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (I don't really need to say more)
Act of War: Direct Action+High Treason (either a campaign that shows us the fall of the Consortium or, better yet, a full blown alternate universe Consortium campaign)
House of the Dying Sun (more intriguing missions and ships, I guess)
Edit: OK, Valiant Hearts actually got a sequel named Coming Home in late January 2023, in a different medium that does show the American intervention and thus the end of WW1. Suffice to say, heard it did well.

Do you have any headcanons or fanart about Kane from Quake 4?
Mmmh sorry got nothing at the moment. Never played Quake 4 by myself, I know the lore, game design, overall art direction (I mean, it's kind of a classic in my interested field) and that Kane is a tribute to John Kane from the Doom 3 novels, but that is about it. I plan to do an actual serious playthrough of the game at some point. I feel pretty bad for the poor guy tho, can't imagine how can he live a decent life in those conditions.

Speaking of Quake, Prime Gaming is giving away GOG keys for Quake 4.
Tumblr media
Ah yes, the Stroggification Quake.
Don't give me that look, it's the big thing everyone remembers about Quake 4, asides from maybe using the Doom 3 engine better than Doom 3.
