Netflix Picks Up Starz Series ‘Black Sails’ From January 2024

Netflix will be starting the New Year off strong with the news coming today that the streaming service US will be picking up multiple seasons of the Starz Original series Black Sails from January 1st, 2023.

From executive producer Michael Bay, Black Sails is the historical drama series that serves as a prequel set 20 years prior to the beloved 1883 novel Treasure Island. It ran on Starz as an Original series for four seasons across 38 episodes between 2014 and 2017.

The series scored 3 Primetime Emmy wins throughout its runtime and remains a hit among fans with it currently carrying an impressive 8.2 on IMDb. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a mix of One Piece for its slavish ships and sets mixed with the historical drama and action of The Last Kingdom.

Amongst the vast ensemble cast for the show featured Toby Stephens, Hannah New, Luke Arnold, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Tom Hopper, Toby Schmitz, and many more.

When will Black Sails be on Netflix?

Multiple seasons will be coming to Netflix US on January 1st, 2024. The exact number of seasons coming to the service hasn’t been confirmed, but we suspect it’ll be all four.

The show is expected to continue to reside on the Starz streaming service.

We haven’t found any other Netflix regions scheduled to get the show. We also checked Netflix in the UK and Canada, but they’re not expected to arrive in either. That’s not to say this couldn’t be licensed to others down the road, however.

Netflix in the US doesn’t have access to many Starz titles like it used to. Netflix US has previously held titles like Ash Vs. Evil Dead and Spartacus, while Netflix internationally carried Power. One significant exception is Outlander (although that’s licensed from Sony Pictures Television), with new seasons coming two years after their original air date. Season 6 of Outlander is due to release in 2024.

Resident Lover is a fan game created by Team AVIA. The game is a sapphic dating simulator, focused on the women that appear in Resident Evil : Village.

This project is a fan dub. Specifically, we are going to be hunting for voice actresses for the main cast of the game. Heisenberg's role is already taken care of by a lovely individual, majority of the cast will pretty much be female or feminine, androgynous to a high degree. (No discrimination here! Auditions are welcome from everyone and anyone!)

Basically, we are going to be completely voicing the game. This is the FIRST ROUND of auditions.

The routes we are going to follow are ONLY the Good Route and the Cult Route of a given character. (We are NOT voicing every single dialogue option in the game, as that would be a literal nightmare. Specific routes and choices are already set in stone.)

VA's are expected to be familiar with the game, but it isn't exactly a requirement. But if you are casted, it is practically a necessity for the sake of understanding the character you will play. When the whole of the main cast is put together, for the sake of both bonding and for the people that haven't played the game, everyone will be put into a large Discord call, and we'll have a massive game night! (All routes will be covered and this will be further touched on when the cast is decided upon.)

The Lipless Man: From the casebook of Akechi Kogoro

[His] thirst for revenge had been inhuman. He was either insane or pure evil. A vampire that fed on fear. How could any harbour such hatred, no matter how badly they felt wronged? Tsunekawa, and even Akechi, recoiled at his speech, which sounded like a curse reverberating from the bowels of hell.

People can bear any horror, no matter how terrifying, as long as it remains in sight. But when something dematerialises before their eyes, like white breath on a frosty day, panic can take hold in an instant.

‘I’ve a funny feeling you’ve both been pulling my leg,’ the Inspector said, strolling in the direction of the temple gate. ‘Both of us?’ Akechi asked, smiling in his customary way. ‘You and the lipless man.’ ‘Ha! What an extraordinary idea!’ ‘It’s like the two of you are playing your own peculiar game. Every hunch you’ve had has been miraculously spot on. And as for the ghoul, somehow he knew it would be you who’d dig up that coffin. He predicted as much in his letter. How could that be, unless you’d both planned it in advance?’ It was not obvious whether the Inspector was joking or not. He looked at Akechi with an unnatural smirk on his lips. ‘Maybe we’re the same person. Like in one of Maurice LeBlanc’s Lupin stories. By day, I’m an amateur detective, by night, a murderous fiend. What a set-up!’ Akechi laughed, long and loud, and eventually Tsunekawa had to join in. ‘Speaking of works of fiction,’ the Inspector said at last, ‘This case has had its own cast of bohemian characters. Artists, writers, and the lipless man himself.’ ‘That may well be intentional. Great criminals have fantastical ambitions...'

There is a dark side to life. An evil lurking in the shadows. Whatever horrors envisaged by the most demonic poet, they're nothing to what takes place in reality.

For hardcore Edogawa Ranpo fans:

One character in this story appears to be loosely based on Edogawa Ranpo himself! Sonoda Kokkō, a writer of detective fiction, is described in the novel as follows:

It appeared Sonoda Kokkō had written bizarre short stories for a select audience with a taste for his brand of grotesque nonsense. He’d produced one piece of fiction a year, often surprising his editors who’d completely forgotten about him. Nobody had known where he lived or what he looked like; not anyone at the magazine that published his fiction, and certainly not the general public. His manuscripts were never sent from the same post office twice, and his fee had always gone back to whatever post office that had been. His landlord and neighbours hadn’t even been aware he was a writer. He’d no friends, and had always kept his doors and windows locked whether he was in or out. All anyone knew about him was that he’d been a loner. ‘The property we searched was in a very desolate part of Ikebukuro. A small detached house. When we looked inside, it was like wandering around a haunted mansion. There were skeletons hanging in the closets, dolls heads, wet with red ink, left on all the tables, and coloured woodblock prints of the most bloodcurdling scenes plastered on every wall. I’m sure you get the picture.’ ‘Fascinating,’ Akechi nodded keenly. ‘His shelves were filled with books on criminology, criminal history, and true crime stories. In the drawers of his desk were pages and pages of unfinished manuscripts...

At one point in The Lipless Man, a story written by Sonoda Kokkō is referenced and used to discover the hiding place of the book's villain. I won't spoil the surprise entirely, but the short story by Sonoda Kokkō is remarkably similar to a famous story written by Edogawa Ranpo!

The Lipless Man was published in 1930, and four years later Edogawa Ranpo moved to a home in Ikebukuro where he lived for the next 31 years. The building where he lived is now The Edogawa Rampo Memorial Center for Popular Culture Studies (The Edogawa Rampo Residence). some fun facts about Luis and André Peña(his VA)

(from the Nick Apostolides(Leon Kennedy VA) livestreams, because i think Luis is neato and i liked André's performance, especially for a first-time big VA gig!)

UPDATE: NOW WITH TIMESTAMPS bc someone on the part two of this post asked about them lmfao

-André actually auditioned for the Spanish cops that escort Leon to Valdelobos originally, and went through several more auditions before landing the role of Luis Serra. for his first role on a big project like Resident Evil, that's incredibly impressive! (timestamp)

-Both Nick and André did motion capture for multiple enemies, including André calling his "best role" playing a dead body lmao. He and Nick also did mocap for the Verdugos, Salazar's bodyguards! (timestamp)

-Being that it was such a big role, he was very anxious about the game dropping, from the moment he got cast to the day it dropped. He even apparently asked Nick constantly if he had somehow been recast. (poor dude, as someone with anxiety issues and huge imposter syndrome, i feel for him!!!) Nick gives him a very sweet but stern pep talk about how he earned and deserved his role on stream too, it was a cute moment! -André is a big enough fan of the original to remember where all the treasure used to be! i love when people who are fans of a series get to work on it, dude. in addition, he was also very happy with the direction he was given, and felt that he was allowed to explore Luis as a more fleshed out character. (which he absolutely is, and i love it! (transcript: I hope this okay for me to add, but he also said that in the first scene with Leon and Luis, Luis looks away as Mendéz injects Leon with la plaga because he couldn't watch another person be infected by something horrible he had a hand in creating. Which is easy to infer from that scene, but it was nice that it was a conscious decision on André's part, rather than aimless direction.)

-the first scene André and Nick filmed together was Luis and Leon chained up together! and the first line of Luis's that got revealed was when he said to Leon, "I guess you, me... picked the wrong spot to vacation, eh?" Apparently the mocap for this scene was also very awkward for André, which is totally understandable, considering Luis spends 90% of it getting jerked around by Leon or trying to dodge a Ganado without the use of his hands lol. -André worked very hard to make sure that Luis's accent was as accurate to Spain's Spanish as it could be, which is awesome, especially for someone who doesn't naturally speak that particular dialect. GOOD ACTING, BABEY (timestamp)

-André owns a legitimate Red 9 gun, the weapon that Luis uses in the game. this is a unique gun bc it was manufactured during the first World War, and it's VERY expensive(they can go up to $10k, but André apparently got his for a great deal!). he also has MADE a copy of the RE4 tactical knife Leon uses, and there's a video up on his youtube channel! -OKAY NEW STREAM TIME! This begins part four of Nick's playthrough, and André is a guest once more. All the previous facts are from part one, which is the first one André guested on. According to Nick, André learned how to flip a lighter around his fingers just for Luis, which is awesome. (and he shows off by doing so in stream!!!) (timestamp)

-Ashley's VA, Genevieve Buechner, got asked about her reaction to Luis' infamous "ballistics" line and both her and André aren't sad to see it missing from the remake. André himself makes a comment about how this version of Luis is still flirty without coming across as "creepy" about it. (i find the ballistics line from the original annoying, and it was a huge part of why i didn't care for Luis in og re4, so i too am VERY glad it's gone) (timestamp)

-André jokes about Luis breaking the brake on the minecart: "I react so depressed, like.... 'Guess that's it, bro.' 'Hey man, I tried.'" He really does! it feels like a mix of sheepishness at breaking it in the first place, and just very, resigned and depressed lol. (timestamp)

-when the cast was asked what kind of pet each of their characters would have, André said Luis would be a cat person, and he'd probably specifically adopt a stray cat, probably one that "adopted" him first. I definitely agree! (timestamp)

If nothing else, Crow Country deserves its flowers simply for being one of the very few retro-style survival horrors to not be a case of, “what if we made a shit game on purpose?”

As a huge horror fan, I’ve played a lot of indie games that liberally took their mechanical, artistic, and atmospheric cues from PSX classics like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Most of them are dreadful, learning absolutely the wrong lessons from their forebears - like thinking awkward, outdated control schemes make for a “scarier” experience.

Crow Country not only absorbs the good qualities of old school horror, it’s judicious enough to cast aside most of the bad ones, making for a game that feels authentic without playing like wet garbage.

Leon's not sure how this happened.

Moments ago, he was staring up at the ceiling, the fans blades spinning round and round as you and Luis converse in the dark, unbeknownst to his conscious body. And now, he was hiding in the trunk of a car with the lengthy man, his feet pathetically shoved into his face.

He doesn't pay attention to the mumbling Spanish cuss words underneath Luis's lips, too uncomfortable, too irritated with his posture and the stuffy area to care. Instead, he's attempting to pay attention.

There's voices outside and there's people rummaging around in the front of the car. He can hear their footsteps, the bumping of legs into the sides, the shifting around the contents, pulling things out and carelessly tossing them to the floor.

Two men, and it's obvious from the slang-like Spanish that's escaping their mouths that they're infected. One in particular chattering on about getting all 'these pricks' and throwing them in one big room for everyone to feed.

He wants to vomit.

Instead, he presses deeper into the vehicle, lowering his body further to avoid hitting his head against the top, listening intently to their activity, allowing his eyes to close in the dark, calming his body down.

He contemplates springing out of the vehicle now. The lack of knowing makes him uneasy because you're around here somewhere, hiding, just like them. You're in danger, they're looking for all three of you and here he is, sitting under the armpit of Luis, the sound of spores coming from a distance.

It seems like it's been eons when finally, the shuffling comes to a stop and the grumbling voices grow fainter. He's almost ready to breathe when the footsteps abruptly stop.

"Hey. " The man slurs. "I wonder how the others are doing. "

"Oh jesus, Alejandro, keep it in your pants. ”

"Nah, I'm really wondering, " Alejandro continues. "You hear some of 'em shot bullets this morning?"

Leon feels his nerves chill.

"I wonder where that could be?"

"Who gives a fuck? Come on. "

"One minute. I'm just gonna radio and let them know we checked this area out. "

The sound of static and then buzzing.

Then, silence and then, noise.

Gurgling, choking noises. Like someone has water stuck in their esophagus and Leon can only think of one thing that would cause that.

He doesn't move, waiting, listening intently as the radio slips onto the floor with a thud, then the choking sound soon stops and there's no sounds to follow. Nothing. No more footsteps.

He waits a while longer before hearing the rustling of the branches. A deer or a random animal.

Slowly, the hinges of the trunk hiss open and the sunlight blinds him for a quick second, casting a bright glow on his face before your shadow casts over it.

You look exactly as he expected you to be. With droplets of blood splattered over your face, nearly coating your hands.

But your eyes are calm and the only sign of disturbance is your chest moving with a greater heaviness than he's used to seeing.

He looks you over after struggling to get past Luis, taking in the way you stand, which parts of your body slump and he thinks your ribs might be causing you more pain than you've let on.

There's a brief moment when you meet his eyes, Luis is cursing in the background, tripping over his own limbs and at the angle you're standing there's wind whipping into your eyes from the opening of the outside storage shed. So maybe you're not seeing straight, or perhaps, all the hard labor of this job is finally getting to you but– your partner‐ well, you could've sworn there was concern in his eyes.

Leon doesn't get a chance to speak.

Before he can get something out, you're turning away, back around to assist Luis who's still trying to work himself out of the clutches of the compacted car.

Leon feels a pinch in his chest, so rapidly, his hands move, fingers curling at his side. You don't even try to say a word to him, let alone look at him. Like you're still bitter that he's here, lingering in the background to criticize you and your thoughts.

When Luis emerges from the car there's a dramatic hand on his heart, but it vanishes rather quickly and he's the one to talk first.

"You okay?" There's seriousness in his voice as he scans you up and down, his eyes meeting Leon's for a split second. "Not hurt, not nothing right?"

You give a firm nod, your face showing not an inkling of distress.

Leon isn't too sure that the response was feasible. But he watched you as you simply went off, to the dusty work table, shuffling around, grabbing things without a second thought. Papers, files, anything. They were haphazardly tossed inside an old backpack that was laid messily by the bench. You were packing the things like your life depended it, looking for any keywords that signaled "bio weapon" to you.

"We have a leak, Leon. Someone's spilling the information on Luis and other projects, not to mention the one for the US government. "

The man lets out a deep sigh and his voice is careful. The new patches of dirt on your face, the arrow holes that punctured the surface of your vest, blood dripping from your eyebrow, the loose strands of stitches that were hanging from your arm after being ripped out, they were all things that made him wary, tip toeing around you, more heedful than Jack and Jill jumping over a candle.

This conversation could and probably would go south at the blink of an eye.

You don't seem to notice his presence until his hand is on your shoulder.

You're zipping the bag up when Leon begins to approach you, his steps are slow and precise like he's stepping on weak floorboards and the outstretch of his arm is even slower.

"Y/N. " His tone is steadier than the shakes of his fingers as they come down onto your shoulder and he turns your body towards him.

Nothing can stop the agitation that pulses throughout your body when you gaze into his blue eyes, staring at him and feeling about ready to cave in his skull.

You're glaring, you realize this but nothing would make your mood budge.

"Lets find a space to sit. " He can tell by the flickering of your eyes that things aren't exactly steady, your mind is at a rapid pace. He saw the way you nearly killed yourself jumping from that landing, running down a hill with a few men on your heels and ripping into people like the idea of humanity no longer interested you. You're worse than normal and it's not just the stress, it's a lot. "There's some empty storage units down the road. We can take advantage of that and you can rest. "

"Rest?" Your voice is hard enough to cause a tremor to jolt inside his body and your face is twisted into something wicked. "Aren't you the one that was so urgent to get out of Luis' hotel room. " You gesture towards the man who's looking on at the two of you, his face contorted into concern. "And suddenly, I'm weak? You want to take a fucking breather?"

"You've done more than your fair share, " Luis throws in. "We're not in a rush anymore. "

"We are in a rush. " You insist. "There's people after us. " Your eyes flee back to the door as if they may suddenly appear. "They're after you. I won't let it happen. You nearly died last time the three of us found ourselves together. "

Something in his face softens ever-so-slightly at your declaration, the worry that twists in your tone. And you feel a small sense of relief flutter around in your chest when he takes your hands in his, the warmth, the reassurance.

"And we'll find 'em. It just means you need to recharge. "

Leons grip tightens on your shoulder but you don't seem to notice as Luis holds your attention. He almost wants to say 'I don't want you getting hurt' but there's a sense of vulnerability in that, so he stops himself, not crossing that line. Not in front of Luis, not in front of anyone.

"And we'll be dead if they find us first. All of us. " You quickly look back to Leon, a huff through your nostrils and a hardness to your stare. But then, Luis gently says your name, bringing your eyes back to him.

"Do you trust me?"

For a moment, you don't know what to say or how to even react. It's been so long since someone has outright asked, knowing the lengths of your career.

After a long beat, you respond. “Yes. “ Your voice is slow, low but there isn’t hesitance and there isn't uncertainty.

Leon seemed to be holding his breath as much as you were and when you finally let it out– he thought you were stupid. Just stupid.

Stupid, not intelligent. Stupid.

Out of all of the people you had to trust. Out of all the people in the world, why would you go out of your way to trust him.

His hold falls. A slight loosening.

To gain someone's trust is hard, to keep their trust, even harder.

Your partner didn't mean to do it, not really. It was such a fine line he walked with you every day. You couldn't tell if he had crossed it or not, even when Luis watched the two of you, the same thing on his face as your own emotions swam around in your body.

Guarded.

Unsure.

If I can trust you with my life, then why can't I trust you with the things that keep me up at night?

Genuinely a shame that resident evil doesn't really go into food that much, but I also completely understand since the "food" you see being eaten 99% of the time is people and rot. However, this will not stop me from food related headcanons, so lets talk about eating traits for the recurring (3 or more separate RE appearances) cast:

Chris Redfield- Never been a picky eater. Before RE5, he pretty much let his metabolism do all the work along with his "stay in shape" workout regimen, so he ate whatever he wanted and most of the time it was junk food, fast food, and meals with a lot of bread and potatoes. When he started working out more, his diet shifted to eating more fats and proteins since they give him a steady flow of energy instead of quick bursts. It doesn't mean he's stopped eating junk food or eating out. His palette simply changed from eating bags of chips and a roll of cookies everyday to maybe a large bag or two of chips and a large pack of cookies that he slowly finishes over the span of a few weeks. Beer and water are interchangeable depending on the meal.

Jill Valentine- She's the pasta person that will use a fork and a spoon underneath to twirl her noodles before eating them. Loves anything covered in a good savory sauce, and she will tear bits of bread off to swipe the rest of her plate clean. She prefers chicken over beef and pork over tofu. Entered a hot wing eating contest once on a dare, and she lost, but she made sure to find out what hot sauce they used so she could keep a bottle in her pantry. She drinks a lot of water, and she likes the taste of it. Not a fan of tea unless it's iced and sweetened heavily. Otherwise not really a fan of sweets when it comes to candy or baked goods unless there's some tartness or sourness to it.

Rebecca Chambers- Her diet leans more into foods she doesn't need utensils to finish like sandwiches, wraps, tacos, and the classic pizza fold with thin crust. She has a sweet tooth, but this is mainly for drinks and hard candies. She loves soda. She doesn't like how gummy candy sticks to her teeth due to the texture. Baked sweets are okay as long as they aren't super sticky to handle, but she'll make an exception for things which have a heavy amount of chocolate. She has a bag of mini-muffins on her desk for breakfast in the mornings. People know not to take any unless they desire her wrath. She knows when Chris has eaten them when she see's a package of snack cakes and an apology post-it note in her drawer.

Barry Burton- Before the gun incident, Barry was the guy who ate primarily meats and very little vegetables unless his stomach was fighting him. After the incident, he opened up his palette more to show he appreciated the hard work put into the meal. Ask him what his favorite food is and his answer changes every time cause it's always what his wife cooked for dinner the night before. He's a dinner guy. He's either too tired in the mornings or too in a rush to go to work, so breakfast is a no-go, but dinners are spent with his family, and post Revelations 2, he cherished them even more. Only drinks water from the tap.

Albert Wesker- Eats expensive looking food because it has the least amount of mess during consumption, and is an ego boost to his god complex wherein everything has to be prepared exactly to his taste. If during his time with S.T.A.R.S they managed to drag him out to eat, he would get a drink and nothing else. He doesn't like limp vegetables no matter how much dressing people cover them in to compensate, and he hates greasy food. His taste towards sweet things are minimal. He enjoys sweeter cheeses like cream cheese or mascarpone, and he tried to like tiramisu, but he didn't like how soft angel fingers are. He will also only eat macarons with a dark chocolate filling sandwiched between. Neutral about water and enjoys teas and wines.

Claire Redfield- Was the pickiest eater as a kid. Hated it when the food on her plate touched, or the juice from one part of her meal touched the other. She had the special disposable plates where each part of her meal was separated so that she'd actually finish the food she was given. She was also disgusted with canned vegetables. As an adult most of those hang-ups are gone. She'll eat almost anything now, and she loves trying new foods from the places she travels to. Flatbreads are her best friend. Pita, naan, chapati, and so on, she can make a meal out of bread and butter alone. She still hates canned vegetables, but she buys fresh or frozen vegetables and incorporates them into her meals where she can. She also hates the taste of water. She'll go for coffee or tea first.

Leon Kennedy- Allegedly is relaxed with all foods except when there's one thing on it he doesn't want to eat. No pickles on his burger. No red onions in his guacamole. No sliced fruit in or on his cake. It's not even that he hates these ingredients or has a texture discrepancy. He just has preferences on where they should be and where they shouldn't. He'll put those same pickles on his club sandwich, or ask for red onions on pizza, and he loves a good fruit pie. He also eats so many of those pre-packaged fruit cups. Neutral about regular water but treats flavored sparkling water like a treat and sometimes hides it in his flask. It's a fun prank to play on Claire.

Ada Wong- Eats more vegetarian style meals, but is not a vegetarian. This isn't done on purpose or for any particular reason. Simply a lot of the meals she favors tend to have an equal amount of vegetables and grains to a lower amount of meat, and some cooks are much more scarce on the meat than others. This resulted in a palate shift where she's fine if there isn't meat on her plate. She's not a big fan of greasy, deep-fried foods, but her guilty pleasure is shrimp toast, and she only has it off the clock when she finds someone who makes it well. Her other guilty pleasure is cinnamon sugar donuts, and she has that more often as a snack to finish off her lunch. Neutral about water and has an iced coffee preference.

Ingrid Hunnigan- She likes rice more than bread and will eat several bowls of rice with whatever the main food is if they go together. Seasoned and spiced long grain rice or plain sticky short grain rice, she'll enjoy them all as long as it's prepared correctly. Loves eating tofu. She'll trade any meat for tofu except for seafood. She's the one ordering surf and turf or the dish with shrimp in it if the option is available. Yet, she cannot eat anything with a face. She doesn't care how pretty the presentation is, there shouldn't be a shrimp or lobster head on her plate when she gets it. She always orders dessert unless she's eating with others, and likes anything cherry flavored. Enjoys drinking water and has to drink water between her energy drink refills.
