Okay the actual request. So how would yandere Riddler be with a darling who is a reporter or journalist who always writes about him or tries to get interviews with him (because it’s her job)? Basically, he has convinced himself that she must be in love with him. Dealers choice on how truly interested she is in him. Hopefully this is okay!
(This is heavily based on his portrayal in the Arkham games, where his narcissist behavior is cranked to 11)
He loves whenever psychologists, journalists, really anyone displays interest in him and tries to reach out. Of course, he only ever grants interviews to the ones who earn it with a few riddles; nothing too dangerous of course, but if she's really worthy to meet him then it won't scare her off!
They meet up at one of his old hideouts, and he's surprisingly cordial for a self-centered and smug murderer. Asking if they want a cup of tea, explaining every little detail about the blend and the best way to prepare it, stuff like that. He also shows off his deductive skills by looking at her clothes, their posture, body language, accent, etc and telling her what he knows about her based on that alone--and that's not even what he learned about her after stalking her online presence for the past day or so.
Most of the female interaction he's received over the past few years has come from Batgirl (kicking his ass), Catwoman (somewhat neutral and mostly business), Harley (erratic with poor taste in men, and spoken for by another lunatic), and Poison Ivy (biologically and chemically fascinating, but much too focused on all things chlorophyll). So needless to say, he hasn't been alone with a woman since...maybe Dr. Young at Arkham? But this woman's got an actual interest in him personally, not just as a patient. Plus, she's actually genuine when she's feeding his ego unlike Young.
It's so cute the way she hangs on his every word and is so eager to hear his take on things. He's had people wanting to report on him before, but asking for his opinion? That's new and VERY welcome. And she's so interested too. It almost feels like it's more than a professional interest...ah, that's it! She must be falling for him; no wonder she keeps reaching out for more interviews and follow-up questions. Well, she certainly has good taste.
He's always brushed off romance and sex; to be fair, he was the one being brushed off when he was younger, but he's always chosen to focus more on the things that matter like his intellectual pursuits. Still...you can only repress that sex drive and innate desire for human companionship/contact for so many years without it starting to wear on you.
He'd start leaving little gifts for her, starting with puzzle boxes containing things he knows she'd like inside after stalking her a bit. And he'd send her bouquets using the language of flowers to let her know he reciprocates her affection, and that she's free to come visit him "overnight" for an interview if she's too shy/coy to admit why she really wants to come visit.
At first when she acts confused and/or upset, he thinks she's just trying to have plausible deniability so she doesn't get in trouble with her boss. Then he thinks she's just naturally shy and afraid to come out and confess for real. And if she still acts like that, he gets annoyed and upset with her for not dropping the act. He's got her figured out, he knows the answer, so stop acting like you don't know what this is about!
And then if she rejects him, he gets pissed. He's allowing her to be with HIM, The Riddler, THE Edward Nygma! And she really thinks she has the right to deny him? Is she not attracted to intelligence? Then the smartest man in the world should be perfect for her! Whatever standards she has, he exceeds them a hundred times over. And surprisingly, she measures up to him in kind despite how she's repaying him now. If he wants her, then she doesn't get to reject him. She should be grateful he's chosen her at all!

HELLO, IN THIS ESSAY I WILL TALK ABOUT RIDDLER AND DO A COMPARISION WITH A POP CULTURE BRAZILIAN CHARACTER AS WELL.
.
RIDDLER is a fascinating character. He can be portrayed as silly, or menancing. A gentleman with finesse and complex schemes or a completely mess who doesn’t really know what to do, but hey here’s 10 dolars for solving my riddle! Also Spandex! And Question Marks!
My Favorite Edward is the one from @askarkham. There’s  lot of thing I like about him, but the one that resonates with me the most is this:
Tumblr media
Ronnie, how dare you give me feels!
Because I’ve been there, my anxiety sometimes fills my head with so many things it’s overwhelming.
I am a lot better know with therapy and stuff.
But before treatment I too, soo many times, cried the same phrase.
That really touched me
Sooo
That’s why I’d like to talk about my fave villain who is very similar of another beloved character here in Brazil, who shaped every childhood here. (And I do get a little pride at showing my people’s comics, they’re great!)
A lot of other characters reminds me of the riddler. Like Wheatley!
@canadian-riddler made an wonderful analysis of the two characters.
I’ll poorly describe them: Polite and condescending, friendly enough until he get’s high advanced technology. Then he wants to put you through puzzles and puzzles and if you keep getting it right he will try to murder you with one of them.
But the character that reminds me of Riddler the most is:
Tumblr media
Jimmy Five (English) Cebolinha (little onion) Cebola (onion) from Monica’s Gang/ Turma da Mônica
His main traits is his ingenuity, his five pointed hair and his dysdalia (pronounces R as L)
@drdeath did na wonderful analysis of Riddler and he’s motivations, and both these characters personality and motives matches a lot.
Cebolinha is a kid who gets in lot of trouble. He’s a very smart and clever kid, always bragging about he’s superior intellect, and creating “infallible plans” (who always fail) to defeat Mônica and earn the title of “owner of the street”.
Cebolinha also messes with Mônica to get her attention and for fun, calling her names ( he has a little crush on her, and in Turma da Mônica Jovem they’re dating) and he has almost a compulsive desire to knot the ears of her rabbit plushie.
Mônica’s main way to deal with the boys name calling is hitting them with her blue rabbit plushie (though the also gives them advice and uses other ways) which hurts a lot because she has super strengh!
Even though he has been beated numeours times Ceblinha never gives up. Believing he deserves the title of Owner of the Street, yet a lot of he’s plans fail because he understimates Monica’s own cleverness.
Despite everything the two kid’s consider themselves friends, and don’t hesitate to protect each other. We have a movie about the group of kids helping cebolinha to find his dog, floquinho.
Tumblr media
A lhasa apso that for some reason is GREEN.
Turma da Mônica Jovem.
Tumblr media
These comics are about the characters as teenagers. Cebola grew to be na expert with comouters, games and technology, he went to a professional and now only speaks L intstead os R when his nervous.
Batman notices it (but it’s another comic for another time)
Now he wants to take over the world to make it a better place.
He’s cleverness and plans saves his friends through the many and dangerous adventures they get themselves in.
Yet he’s been called out on his manipulations.
One of the earlie sagas was about the ID Mosters, the physical manifestations of the group worst traits and impulses.
They manifested because it’s in the teenager years that kids start to get more emotional changes, and start to be aware of their impuses and control them better than when as kids by developing their emotional intelligence.
Cebola’s mosters is a Liar and master manipulator who uses his charms and skills to get whatever he wants. And the kid had to deal with his shame and realise he is and can be a better person than in he was in the past.
Maybe Arkham should try the “fight the physical manifestation of your Id” it seems to work.
Important scene in the Saga.
Here Red Monica is Monica’s ID monster disguised. Humilliating Cebola. Later the Real Monica confronts him, thinking he’s sending fake messages  to make her look bad. So he feels he’s being gaslighted.
THEN HE BEGS HER TO BEAT HIM.
Tumblr media
C: Mônica...No... I will do anything...I
Cellphone*Sending to all contacts*
RM: Tomorrow you will make another  sign, and will do my homework too! Or else... I will send your other love notes so everyone will laugh at you.
C: I thought that we...
I thought that...
I thought that you liked me!
RM: And I Like! I like when you do what I SAY!
Tumblr media
M: CEBOLA!
Speak now! What nonsense is this!
Why are you saying such things about me. Did you decide to go back to the old plans?
Why are you lying,Cebola?
C: BEAT ME UP!
Go on, Mônica! Beat me up already! It was better when you beat me up!
C: Because being beated up by you doesn’t hurt s much...
As what you’ve being doing...
NOW! Of course emotional manipulation hurts more than being punched.
And what was the blackmail: Humilliation
Tying it with the Riddler: Edward surely feels that being beaten up by Batman hurts much less than the humiliation of being defeated. That’s also why he goes on and on with puzzles and plans even though if he fails he will physically hurt.
Because he’s already hurt! He already feels humilliated! And that’s the worst pain he’s ever endured and is still going on.
Back To the comics.
Later in the comics, He and Mônica confessed his feeling to each other, but Cebola explained he can only date her after defeating her.
He does get called out on it in later editions.
Tumblr media
C: Mônica...I...
M: Why illusions of grandeur, Cebola? Why do you believe you need to be superior than me?
Tumblr media
C: Superior? I don’t want to be above you, Mônica!
I want to be equal! Sice childhood you’ve been strong... confident...the leader...
While I always was the changing-letters kid who got beaten up at the end.
Okay, Edward Nigma wants to be above Batman. But most of the feelings is the same.
Eddy sees Batman as strong, and confident and a leader. While he’s the one who’s humiliated and beaten up.
Tumblr media
C: You don’t realize it, right? You have no idea how hard it is to stand at your side...
Without feeling small.
I think I’m giving a little fuel to batriddle shippers... oh well.
As you can see, like Riddler, Cebola feels that he needs to prove himself, needs to prove he’s worth, to the point of delaying everything else in his life until heachieves it.
So my analysis is complete. BEHOLD!
HEADCANONS
I found a fic that I still wanna read called “Dinner at Wayne Mansion”, I get Riddler made the highest bidding in Bruce Wayne at the Bachelor Auction.
It reminded me of that comic where Eddie tried to trick Batman into dining with him.
I think this universe riddler would totally do the auction thing just to talk all night long with Bruce Wayne, and his projects and stuff. All happy and giddy. “Oh Bruce, how are the kids doing?”
Edward lowkeys wants Bruce Wayne to adopt him.
Come on DC! Give us na alternative universe where after his first crime and Batman finding out about he’s abusive household, Bruce decides “Okay I’m gonna raise this young man”.
Stephanie LOVES her Big Brother Eddie! He beat up her abusive dad (Cluemaster) and humilliated him with trivia knowledge and stuff.
I think one thing that should be explores is Riddler as na expert magician, he is a master escapist because he loves houdini, and magic employs cleverness and illusion.
He’s a geek for magic tricks.
He shows them to Harley and Jervis who look bright eyed and “Oooooooh”
Firefly asks if he knows fire tricks
He does and promplity shows off his skill.
Then John has to clean out the entire hideout because Edward fell for it and now Garfield knows there are flammable chemicals here.
Final Thought.
Well, there’s ANOTHER brazilian character that he reminds me of.
Tumblr media
Visconde de Sabugosa  (Viscount of Corncob) from  The Yellow Woodpecker Farm
Ginger like lots of adaptations
Soul patch
Green tux
He’s main trait is his intelligence
differences
HE IS A LIVING DOLL MADE OF CORNCOB!

I'd love a directors commentary for all of "my heart is a fist of barbed wire", but there's so many chapters (really, really good ones gah) so chapter 32 "ring" would be fascinating to hear your take on, it really ties into the last couple chapters and is still so shocking?! I really enjoyed it, thank youu!! ♥️
thank you!  i remember going into chapter 32 i was just so worn down from the fic (as much as I enjoyed writing it) that I was kind of dreading having to wrap up so many major plot points in just one chapter. the chapter ended up being nearly 10,000 words, which at that time especially was brutal for me to try to get through, so it was kind of tiring to get through, but I ended up being pretty satisfied with it. I wrote it in parts and spent about a day on each ‘section’ since it’s divided by months. I still feel like the pacing is pretty uneven, but it got across Amy’s rapidly evolving emotional state as she figures out what she wants to do with her life. ‘August’ was interesting because this is where Amy takes her first real step towards actively deceiving Tom; we see her come to a series of conclusions pretty much all at once. she knows he is going to find out that she came looking for him in Knockturn Alley. either she can confess that she followed up on the Riddles and knows what he’s done, or she can hide it. her decision to hide is largely due to the fact that she’s now realized this is the *only* advantage she has over him. he’s committed a serious crime- murder!- and is convinced he’s getting away with it. the only way she can keep this leverage over his head is to feed into Tom’s sizable ego and play up his cunning and charisma, convincing him that he’s ‘won her back’. fortunately for Amy, she is perceptive enough to realize that she needs to go about this in a manner that is convincing. he has some massive blind spots, but she knows he will be suspicious if she suddenly seems completely forgiving and accepting of his bad behavior once again. with this in mind, Amy comes up with a haphazard plan to reel Tom back in; she’s going to play coy and distant, feed into his desire to ‘prove himself’ to her, and let him do a lot of her work for her. Tom is very smart but he’s also used to being right, and he relies on a ton of assumptions to live his life. his #1 assumption is that no one is cleverer than him or more cunning than him, and Amy is not an exception to this. he might respect her obvious wits and determination, but he certainly doesn’t want to acknowledge that it could ever be used against him, personally. therefore when Amy is reunited with Tom in ‘August’, she puts on a pretty good act, pretending to slip up and reveal that she still cares for him and his well-being; Tom is only too eager to fall for this, and leaps at the chance to convince her that he’s back on his best behavior; when he wheedles her into a date, she lets him, albeit pretending to still have her guard up. one interesting note about ‘October’ is that despite her obvious animosity and desire to get away from Tom, Amy still worries that he might be drafted after he’s turned eighteen. I think it just speaks to her overall compassion. she has plenty of reason to hate him, but she still wouldn’t wish the war upon him. In ‘December’ we see that Tom and Amy are back to their own tricks; on friendly enough terms to exchange holiday gifts once more, albeit in private. Amy is forced to remain back at Hogwarts for the break due to Wool’s closure, leaving her extremely isolated and vulnerable. Tom, of course, senses an opportunity here and presents her with a very expensive gift of pearl earrings (which Amy infamously speculates over the origins of). there is a whole lot of fucked up stuff wrapped up with this present exchange. Amy bakes Tom cookies almost as a ‘test’ experiment to see how trusting he is of her: the answer is ‘very’. he accepts her gift without question, almost as if it were expected and prompted by him. he presents her with what would ordinarily be considered a very serious and romantic gift; genuine pearl earrings (or really any expensive jewelry) was a major status symbol gift in the 1940s. no normal teenage boy would have been giving a girl he wasn’t even ‘going steady with’ such a lavish present. it would have been more in line for a married couple. this is some obvious foreshadowing of what’s to come. the very first thing Tom does after giving Amy this present is not ask if she likes the earrings or tell her he got her them because he cares about her and knows she’s fond of pearls, but instruct her to put them on. I think this is such a textbook example of his controlling and possessive behavior. it pops up throughout the fic and we certainly see it when he has Matthew attacked out of jealousy and a desire to make Amy suffer, but it’s just super blatant here. it’s almost like he doesn’t really care whether Amy likes the earrings or not. what he cares about is that she is willing to put them on, even if only temporarily, thus demonstrating (in his view) some level of devotion that he’s going to rely on later. in his mind, if she can accept the earrings without rejecting them (or him) she can accept something more serious. we then see him immediately try to kiss her, something he hasn’t done in over a year at that point; they’ve had pretty much no physical contact whatsoever since the Matthew Fiasco. what’s also disturbing here is that Amy senses he’s about to kiss her and decides to ‘let it happen’, without much regard for her own consent. she doesn’t seem to care whether or not she actually wants Tom to kiss her- he wants to, and she’s decided that it’s in her best interests to keep him placated. compared to her earlier trend of usually taking the initiative in their romantic relationship and being very clear about what she wants and doesn’t want, I think this is really sad and concerning.  what surprises Amy (and maybe the reader) is that when Tom does go through with it, he almost immediately realizes that she’s not into it, at all, beyond just not reciprocating right off the bat, and backs off. there’s multiple ways to interpret this. we could argue that Tom still cares about her consent and has no interest in kissing someone who clearly doesn’t want to be kissed. we could argue that Tom realizes it’s in *his* best interests to try to *prove* he can be understanding and patient and so he reluctantly backs off. we could argue that the tender and sweet nature of the kiss itself shows a ‘soft side’ to Tom that is really desperate for love and affection, as opposed to him trying to bully her into reciprocating.  in the end, this is from Amy’s POV, and she just doesn’t know. what she does see is that Tom seems visibly disturbed by her lack of reaction, and is genuinely concerned she’s about to cry. he then apologizes (or as much of an ‘apology’ as we might ever see from him in Barbed Wire) and seems to remind himself that she asked him for some space and time.  Amy latches onto this, and tries to reassure him that she, too, wants things to go back ‘to the way they were’. but the cold reality here is that there is no going back. Amy *can’t* go back. the real dysfunction here is Tom’s insistence on trying to turn back time- to him, the reminder that they are graduating and will soon ‘leave behind’ their school social circles is a comforting one. the irony of course is that literally none of that happens. Tom has no intention of moving on with his life or dropping the fairweather friends he’s cultivated at Hogwarts. he intends to exploit as much as possible from them and the reputation he’s built up as an aspiring pureblood elite. nothing really changes for him, but everything is about to change for amy. finally we get to ‘May’ and ‘June’. I seriously debated giving ‘June’ its own chapter and ending 32 on ‘May’, but I decided at the time it would give readers a false impression of the direction the fic was headed in. I figured there were enough twists already without convincing everyone that we were about to have an ‘unhappy happy ending’ or I guess ‘happy ending for Tom, mediocre ending for Amy’. in ‘May’ of course comes the Proposal. I really debated combining this with ‘June’ and having Tom propose right before Amy springs her trap, but it ended up working out better this way. Amy and Tom yet again meet up in secret, this time above the dueling gallery, and they almost seem to have fully reconciled- Amy enthusiastically reciprocates his kiss, and he presents her with yet another gift: an unexpected letter of recommendation from one Oliver Parkinson, a successful healer guaranteed to ensure her a prosperous career at St Mungo’s straight out of graduation. I think kind of the crux of Amy’s character is her reaction to this gift. even while pretending to be won over, she cannot hide her distaste for this method; she doesn’t want anything she feels she hasn’t earned. to Tom, this is a pointless (if endearing) waste of her pride. he is really patting himself on the back here, going, ‘look how enlightened I am, not only being tolerant of you wanting a career of your own, but going to all this trouble to set it up for you!’. but that’s not what Amy wants. she wants a partner who is going to encourage her to forge her own path, not do the work for her. she doesn’t want an easy life, she wants a meaningful one, and her and Tom’s definitions of ‘meaningful’ just don’t align. it also has to do with his own pride- in Tom’s mind, if they’re going to be engaged, *of course* she needs an illustrious career, especially since Amy has no ‘good breeding’ or lovely country estate to fall back on. he knows it will be much easier to work her into pureblood society if she is a respected protege of a man like Oliver Parkinson; than he can arrange for people to conveniently forget about her wild school days and her muggleborn background, and really shape her into a woman he feels will best suit his goals in life; someone successful in their own right, but still owing it all to him and his connections. he then almost immediately shoots himself in the foot by bragging about his blackmailing of Atticus Greengrass to secure his own career prospects, and then, of course, unveils the fateful Ring, the same Ring Amy immediately spotted on him way back in ‘August’, which has conveniently fit very well into her plans. Tom still can’t be bothered with a more traditional propose, and launches into one final sales pitch to Amy. a lot of people have commented on about how earnest and genuinely compelling they found his speech. I felt like it had to be in order to sell the moment. he needs to *believe* in what he’s saying. it has to be the most open and vulnerable moment of Tom’s in the entire fic for it to seem plausible. he puts it all on the line for one split second of faith... and of course it blows up in his face, but the point is that he seeded his own destruction, more or less. had he been like this with Amy from the start, maybe they could have built a much more positive and open relationship, instead of a dysfunctional mess. “you’re alone,” Tom tells Amy, more or less, “you’ve always been alone, and you will always need me to make you feel less alone” but we know that’s just not true. Amy isn’t alone; she has real friends and passions, she has so much to look forward to, an entire life ahead of her. Tom is the one who’s alone, in the worst possible way. the one person who made him feel less alone, he ended up pushing away with his poor choices and selfish desires.  he brings up her background in this ‘gotcha’ moment- but the joke is that Amy doesn’t care! she’s always known, and she doesn’t care. it’s painful, yes, and she acknowledges that pain, but she has moved on from that part of her life. she holds no rage or even resentment towards her mother for giving her up. she doesn’t resent her mother for being an impoverished sex worker with no means to care for a small child. she has no desire to find out who her father was or ‘confront’ her mother- that doesn’t matter to Amy. where she comes from, her origins, they don’t matter. she doesn’t give a damn about her heritage or ancestry, she just wants to move forward.  and now the only thing standing in her way is Tom. I think ‘June’ pretty much speaks for herself, but I will say this; when I wrote I didn’t really feel any vindictive sense of ‘ah, she’s getting her revenge on him now!’, mostly just sadness. It’s really sad that Amy ends up feeling the only way she can even have this honest talk with Tom... is with him incapacitated and literally unable to respond.  she identifies herself as being selfish, and I think this is a good example of selfishness not always being a bad thing, which I think is very important, especially for girls! (not that I’m condoning drugging anyone or blackmailing them, etc). but learning to put yourself and your wants and needs first is important. Amy is mature enough to realize that this relationship with Tom and her cannot work. she cannot be his moral compass, and she cannot turn a blind eye to his actions. his speeches about ‘letting her win’ and them being happy together are pretty and persuasive but ultimately hollow. there is no happy ending for them. he ruined their chances of that a long time ago. she’s not his enemy- he is.  and I think her parting of “I love you” just really speaks to who she is as well. it’s really hard to recognize that someone you love isn’t good for you, that not all loves are necessarily good things. being with him might feel right in the moment, but in the long-term she knows it would be the exact opposite. she’s able to honestly acknowledge her feelings while still finding the strength to walk away.

Confessions
Rating: T (slightly suggestive but mostly fluffy sweetness)
Pairing: Nygmobblepot (Oswald x Edward)
Summary: Born of a desperate desire to FIX IT after first watching the scene where Isabella is introduced. A different way things could’ve played out.
Betaed by the awesome @artemis099 ! 🖤 :D
Read on ao3 if you prefer
Ed doesn’t believe in signs. They’re illogical, fictions people tell themselves to feel better about how out of control life can be. Ed doesn’t believe in signs, but when he sees Miss Kringle in the liquor store, he thinks maybe he should start.
“Kristen?” He stares in shock for a moment. She looks odd. Her hair is styled differently, blonde instead of that gorgeous red, but he’d know her face anywhere.
With a sweet smile, she corrects him, “I’m sorry. You must have me confused with someone else.”
“You look like someone I used to know,” he says, still reeling with shock. How can it be possible? Could she be one of Strange’s monsters? Why? Why bring her back? What purpose could she serve?
“Are you feeling alright? You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” she frowns, brow wrinkling with concern.
“I’m fine, just a little shook up. And there’s no such thing as ghosts,” he replies.
“I’m Isabella, what’s your name?” she holds out her hand for him to shake.
“Edward, Edward Nygma,” he shakes her hand with a frown.
“Pleased to meet you,” she smiles, “so what are you drinking today?”
“Wine,” he shakes himself out of it, suddenly remembering what he was doing, “I’m having dinner with a friend.”
“That’s always nice, who’s your friend?”
“Oswald,” he smiles, “Oswald Cobblepot.”
“The mayor?”
“Yes, he’s a good friend of mine”
“You must be pretty important,” she smiles, “he’s lucky to have a friend like you”
“I’m the lucky one, really. He’s helped me through a lot. He told me he had something important to tell me at dinner,” he frowns lost in thought, “I wonder what it could be?”
What did Oswald have to tell him? He’d been acting rather off all day. It’s not like him to forget his words, could he be hiding something? Then why would he tell him now? That doesn’t make sense. It can’t be bad, Oswald looked...happy, actually. Happier than Ed’s seen him in a while. He’s really taking to his new job as mayor.
Ed smiles, remembering the way Oswald looked at him after he’d won the election. Like he’d never really seen him before. The soft, disbelieving way he said love when he solved Ed’s riddle. Of course the people loved him, why shouldn’t they? Oswald is wonderful, and he truly loves the city. There’s no better candidate for mayor.
Wait. Love! Could that be what this is about? Could Oswald have feelings for him?
“Well, you mustn’t be late! It won’t do to keep a friend waiting. And you won’t find out standing here.”
“Y-yeah, better not. Nice meeting you!” Ed hurriedly paid for the wine and headed out the door.
Oswald can’t have feelings for me, he decides. He would’ve noticed! How could he not notice something that important? We’re friends! We live together! Work together! I see him every day! Oh, Ed pauses.
Do I have feelings for him? Ed stops in his tracks to consider Oswald. He is rather handsome, and if Ed’s being honest with himself, he has admired him for some time. Long before he found him in the woods. Even in that first meeting at the GCPD, he’d immediately been drawn to him. Oswald radiates power and charisma from every pore. The way he waltzed into the GCPD like he owned the place, like he didn’t care at all that he was supposed to be dead. And then, in the woods, he looked like a wounded bird. A poor little bird in need of care. His mother’s death, he’d seen Oswald through it hadn’t he? Even that idiot Jim Gordon had thought he was talking to Miss Kringle when he’d been on the phone with Oz. But, love? Sure they’d formed a wonderful friendship, but he’d never even considered another man that way…
Ah but that’s not true is it. His over dramatic alter ego decides to cut in.
Shut up, that was nothing. A mistake. He was just a distraction. A curiosity is all. I never really felt anything for him.
That’s not what you thought when you had his tongue down your throat. I remember a lot of “uhhh’s” and “please more!”
Mind your business. Besides, Oswald is different.
You ARE my business. My body too, remember? I don’t even see why we’re standing here debating this, Eddie. You want him and so do I. Oh think of how magical it would be! We can accomplish so much together! Real partners in crime. Unlike that goody goody Miss Kringle you had before. She could never accept us like Ozzie does. Never UNDERSTAND us. You just said so yourself. He’s different. Remember how much fun we had together with Mr. Leonard? How pretty Oswald looked with blood dripping down his face? The barely concealed RAGE, the malice in his eyes when he’s plotting revenge. The schemes he comes up with. That murderous penguin was made for us, Eddie. Don’t deny it. You know you can’t lie to me.
We don’t even know that’s what Oswald wants to tell us. For all we know it’s about work. Important business to discuss.
Oh it’s very important business indeed. I wanna hear that little birdy SING.
Ed blushed at the graphic images his alter ego had created. Maybe we should just get home, he thinks to himself finally beginning to walk again.
As he walks through the door he’s greeted with darkness. Nothing but the soft flicker of candles. The air smells heavenly, Olga’s really outdone herself, he thinks. When he reaches the dining room he stops dead. Oswald has never looked so…
Beautiful, his alter ego helpfully supplies.
Oswald hasn’t noticed him yet, he’s busy nervously rearranging the cutlery on the table, muttering to himself.
Practicing? Ed wonders.
“Hello, Oswald. I brought your favorite.” He smiles, holding up the expensive wine.
“Ed! I was starting to worry,” Oswald’s face lights up, mouth curling into a soft smile. The candles make his already bright eyes look almost inhuman.
Ed’s worries start to fade as he slips into his usual seat and Oswald summons Olga to bring their dinner.
“Ed, there comes a time in every man's life when he must make a choice. To be brave and go after what he wants or to be a coward, and never know what could’ve been. I am not a coward, Edward Nygma.”
Ed watched, intrigued by Oswald’s speech. He could tell he was shaking, stumbling over his words a bit. He was having trouble looking in Ed’s eyes and even...is he blushing?
Well isn’t that a pretty sight?
“I’ve been trying to tell you all day. I must confess I don’t have much experience with this sort of thing. It frightens me a little. But, my mother always told me ‘Life only gives you one true love, Oswald. When you find it, you must run to it.’ What I’m trying to say is, I love you, Ed.” He finishes his speech, finally looking up at Ed nervously.
Well, that was-
Certainly something. He must’ve worked hard on that.
...
Say something back you idiot!
...
Any time now.
Oswald begins to look panicked, fear and disappointment shining in his eyes, he starts to ramble, “if you don’t feel the same, that’s okay! I mean of course we can still be friends if-”
Do something you moron!
“I’m needed to live but you can never hold me
I can be shattered in an instant
Taken, without consent
But given, I’m the most precious gift of all
What am I?”
“A heart!” Oswald smiles, looking up at Ed with a sigh of relief.
Ed was out of his chair in an instant, gently caressing Oswald’s face before their lips met.
He tastes even better than I imagined.
For once, I agree.
Oswald wrapped his hands in Ed’s hair, deepening their kiss with a moan.
Ed gasped, nipping at his lips teasingly.
They pressed their foreheads together as they broke apart, gasping for air.
“What does this mean for us now?” Oswald asked, blue eyes meeting brown.
“I think it means we’re real partners in crime now.” Ed grinned, laughing at his own stupid pun.
Oswald stared at him in disbelief before shaking his head. “What have I gotten myself into?”

Aftermath
The Phantom right after his failed assassination, recovering and plotting his next move.
The Phantom is laying silently in his hospital bed and blankly looks up at the IV-drip and the small container infusing it with morphine. He does not really need it but he prefers not to tell them why. Tomorrow he would ask them to stop the pain management, though. It slows his thinking.
His game in court went down yesterday afternoon. He was shot and brought to an emergency room in the evening. Since then he laid here, guarded at all times, having been subjected to initial questioning before being allowed to rest for the evening, as matters are being arranged further.
As things stand at the moment, his best option is to submit himself, thinking things out and see where to go from here. The mistake happened and there is no use in lamenting over it. The key to success is to keep moving, to make the best of the situation at hand. It worked in the past and got him out of ALL situations so far. It is not always clear but if you know how to take advantage of any situation without being too picky about the outcomes you will come out on top no matter what. However, the Phantom cannot deny a distinct uncertainty about his future in THIS case because of his unmasking and its relation to what and who he is. He might never be able to accept assignments again and it keeps nagging at his mind, for this is the very core of his existence. Closing his eyes, he forces those thoughts into the background, for now. Much will change, that is for sure, but he cannot skip a step to reach his goal. First, he needs to think over the events, his own actions included, and submit them to careful evaluation.
In hindsight, this particular situation of standing in court, was caused by the unfortunate death of that woman seven years ago. If the psychologist had not interrupted him he would not have been forced to silence her.  And, with her daughter’s unexpected attack and injury to his hand, the cursed moon rock would be left untouched. International law enforcements had NOTHING on him, but this moon rock threatened his absolute perfection of anonymity. He never lost sight of it. Was he afraid of his identity being exposed because of it? Well, yes, of course he was, but he never “felt” the physical clenching of his body to accompany that “theoretical feeling”. It was a mere consequence of protecting his anonymity. He does not want his identity to be known so naturally he “fears” its exposure. So what exactly did they expect when they pressed him on the matter. A yes? A no? There was, and still is, no answer to that, for he feels nothing. Except that he was growing more and more annoyed at their pestering about it. Even HE has his limits, no matter how phlegmatic he is.
The psychological profile was another weak point in this whole business and the Phantom watched Blackquill’s movements carefully throughout the years. All the taunts from within the prison reached him eventually. He knew, however, that unless he made a move towards Blackquill, the evidence being presented would be meaningless. Without a case at hand, the profile posed no threat. Leaving it be was a good strategy and with Blackquill’s death sentence finally executed it would remain meaningless forever. His HAT-2 assignment brought him back here into the vicinity, and thus it bore the risk of becoming the very case Prosecutor Blackquill needed to make his move. The Phantom could have refused the assignment, of course, but since it was a prime opportunity to deal with various loose ends at the same time, he accepted the risk. That Blackquill dared to step into the open as he did was unexpected but it did successfully lure in the Phantom. To his own chagrin, this step by the prosecutor made it impossible for for the Phantom to ignore it any longer.
He had made the decision to combine all his goals into this one assignment long before he came up with an actual plan for the day. So when he in-cooperated his personal agenda into his job, was he already too affected to think clearly? Sabotage the start - destroy the moon rock - destroy the psychological profile - get rid of Simon Blackquill and even pin the blame on the girl that caused him all the trouble in the first place. No, he failed to see how he might have been. However, his contingency plans were not adequate enough, obviously, and his opponents saw and took advantage of that.
Generally speaking his plan was not a bad one as such. It was risky, yes, as it always was, in terms of technicalities and need of contingency plans. It simply did not go the way he wanted and he had to admit that he was up against people cleverer than all of the brains of the global law enforcements together. Their unshaking believe in truth and justice, gave them the power to question everyone and everything. If they had not been so loyal to their friends…. if they had not been so…. rational amidst all the emotional drama… he would have gotten away. But he made the mistake to underestimate Phoenix Wright. Oh, the Blackquills and the police were no deal at all, but he never thought one could possibly have so much trust in someone’s innocence as that defense lawyer. Most people would have thrown the towel by the very moment the girl confessed to remembering murdering her own mother but … not Phoenix Wright.
During the later stages of him on the stand, as his words were doubted more and more, the Phantom was slowly filled with stress. An undefinable, uncomfortable contortion of his being. A “feeling” he wanted to get rid of, badly. Such distraction is undesirable. Thankfully he never really has to endure it much in the first place and that bit he encounters occasionally he can easily suppress with his apathetic nature. This time, however, the situation got out of hand due to the constraints of the situation and all control slipped out of his reach. Too many fingers pointing at him, too much doubt and perseverance in those behind the benches. They kept pounding at him and he was not able to remove himself from the situation, as he would usually do. Stress of that kind either numbs you into a silent confession or tears you apart in an outburst one. He saw that often enough in court as Blackquill’s assigned police detective. In his attempt to deal with the situation, he went beyond the point of no return and he was able to feel the wall of emptiness crumbling and breaking down.
Very well then. Then so it was. He allowed them to get him. He knew full well WHAT he was and with that also, WHO he was. Being an empty vessel for other personalities, his own desires and needs were always “theirs” as much as possible under the encompassing purpose of his being. Trying to give an answer to a question he had no idea could ever be so relevant was stressing him and apparently more than he would like to admit. So he gave them what they wanted. A display of fear. The fear itself was real enough, it just never before really made its way out from his subconscious self into the open in such intensity. It was the combination of annoyance, his patience wading, frustration over the seeming importance of emotions and feelings and the stress of his identity being revealed at any time that made him lose focus. All their hammering made him question himself. He always considered his own apathetic nature to be a quality, not a weakness. It allows him to think clearly and independently from emotional attachments and influences, without fear. Yet, these people put so much importance on the strength of emotions, trust and love, that he began to doubt himself, then and there, again. Did he miss out on something? Was he incomplete?
No, he left all those questions behind a long time ago. He already tried to understand others. While he learned to read and speak emotions by observation, he only barely experiences it himself. He feels empty by default most of the time. His artificial emotions served their purpose but there was never a real understanding, so he left this quest behind for a reason. It just does not work out for him. He naturally cannot not deliver what others seem to take for granted. He isn’t weaker for not responding to emotions. And the success of his assignments and his professional credence are the very proof of that. With a sigh the Phantom accepts, however, that his resolve is not strong enough yet. He will need to work on the endurance of his guard to prevent another such loss of control. For when it all came down, he found himself in a pitiful position, like a dog with its tail between its legs, wincing for mercy. Unacceptable and shameful.
Even though he is just laying in a hospital, he covers his face with his free hand to protect his privacy.
And then there was the shot.
That sniper put him out of his misery. When the bullet hit him, he felt and heard the metal of Bobby's badge give way. His chest grew cold and he fell backwards by the force of the impact. For a moment he was overwhelmed by the intensity of the sound he perceived, people gasping, screams of terror, footsteps like thunder coming his way and the deafening hammering of the Judges gavel under his own voice demanding order in the courtroom.
That moment he let go of everything and gave in. A retreat into his internal emptiness. He did not want to move or talk. No intention whatsoever to do anything else any further, neither as Detective Fulbright, nor as his own vessel. They could do whatever they wanted to do.
As he felt no pain, he was not riddled by an inexplicable fear of death. He might die, he might not. It depended on his actual condition. He could not tell if he preferred it one way or another. And without moving he was not able to ascertain his condition. He didn't lose consciousness, so he just laid there, breathing slowly, his eyes closed. He remembers Blackquill and the Chief Prosecutor ordering an ambulance. The bailiff touching him and pressing a dressing over Fulbright’s white coat to stop the bleeding. The courtroom being cleared from all spectators. The paramedics desperately trying to talk to him, without success and the subsequent transport from the courthouse to Hickfield Clinic. He refused to open his eyes but he knew that Blackquill had personally brought him up to the doors of the ambulance vehicle by the sound of his steps. It was only inside the small cabin, that he at last acknowledged the paramedic’s presence, for he had no interest in being considered unconscious. It did not help, however, as the moment he was being brought into the hospital he was being put under anaesthetics for the surgery. Needlessly in his opinion but he did not mind the passing of time in slumber and opportunity for his brain to relax from the unusual emotional impact.
When he awoke he was in single bed room. His wrist handcuffed to the bed and a police officer sitting on a chair on the opposite wall, reading the papers. When he moved to correct his position, the officer put the papers down and went outside for a moment. He sighed heavily. At the very least, his injury gave him a soft start into his … momentary capture. The effects of the anaesthetic and the pain management dulled his thinking so responding to some initial questions by the police officers was ineffective even if he had wanted to communicate. So the day went by and he only now has the time and mental strength to go over the past events, introspect and formulate a plan.
Thus, secondly, what are his current needs and which one has highest priority?
His most basic needs are covered. Food, water, shelter are taken care of, even if the quality lacks a little and his privacy is somewhat compromised. It does not matter. He himself has no demands beyond the satisfaction of those basics.
The Phantom moves his right hand. It is tightly handcuffed to the bedside. It appears that this is the biggest issue at the very moment. His personal freedom. He is detained and can’t go anywhere without supervision and physical restraints. Coming up with a plan to remove himself from this situation is certainly the most important matter to apply his brain to. This depends, however, on how they choose to deal with him. The local authorities have to go down the conventional route. They must try him in court first and then decide on the nature of his verdict. Throughout all this he is going to be placed in the detention centre. Once his case has been dealt with on domestic level, Interpol might step in. Not that they have much on him apart from the HAT incidents but they would be fools to not try and coax more out of him. Admittedly, he is actually interested to learn how much they suspect, in return. At the same time, however, their treatment of him would not be as law-abiding and humane, and he expects an escape would be a lot more complex to achieve than from the local prison here. So, if possible, keep himself under Blackquill’s wing and in the establishments he knew well. Take his leave from the detention centre…. or the prison. If Interpol takes him away he would have to act on the fly but by the initial proceedings so far he considers that unlikely.
With his free hand, the Phantom gently touches his chest, where the bullet had hit him. He can act despite this injury. The nurse mentioned that it had changed it’s path after hitting the police badge and went past his heart into his lung instead. Recovery should be swift.
Finally, he allows thoughts of his future to reclaim his mind.
The sniper. He must have come from his current employer. They alone have an interest to shut him up permanently to cover their own name. It was to be expected. As long as he is held by the law enforcements they will seek his death and even after he regains his freedom, they will never be sure if he has not revealed anything. Keeping that in mind, his constant supervision may just be of advantage to him. The rocket launch may have been interrupted but his capture broke the contract and forfeit his entitlement to his reward. With another sigh he bids it good-bye. At the very least, Fulbright had offered a comfortable standard of living unlike some of the other detectives and he was not forced to touch his own money during the past year.
His career is founded on word-of-mouth. He is a freelancer, not tied to anything or anyone in particular and he has actually found himself working against his own employers in the past. His absolute anonymity allowed it. His latest employer is a large one with a lot of international influence. If they consider him a failure, they might just be powerful enough to put him out of work, forever. He most certainly will have to get in touch with his contacts and probe how his reputation is doing. It is vital before returning to his underground circles. Before he can ascertain the true spirit of the situation, however, it is and remains of no use to ponder about it.
The heavy feeling of sleep comes over him as he actively empties his mind. One step at a time. Recover. Protect his life within prison walls. Submit to Blackquill. Avoid Interpol’s terror-treatment. Escape. Re-establish his position.
His thoughts come back and try to circle through his mind but every time the Phantom pays them no heed, they become weaker and weaker… until they finally disappear and make way for the silence of sleep.

Your Riddler Oracle Au (that you will never write) seriously sounds amazing. You could even add the tragedy kink in with Eddie becoming more and more enticed with the dark side (a 'personal trap' (description stolen from Norman Bates) because of his abusive upbringing) and both Batman and Foxy end up worrying about him as he slips more and more. Kinda like a telltale thing with John Doe, but dealing with Foxy way more, because of the years of love they had. Sorry, too much nerding of your au. 8P
(Au anon being overly annoying over here) it can even include Eddie becoming somewhat enamored with Ozzie, or the idea of Ozzie, similar to that Harley Quinn parallel post you put up earlier. Basically tempting that part of his mind to the dark side.
HI ANON I AM FINALLY REPLYING!
Firstly I just - god bless you for being so excited about my daydream ramblings
I ramble more OVER HERE with more AU thoughts/plotting that touches on Ed being tempted by darkness a little. Cos in my scenario I imagine him still trying/wanting to kill Tom Doughty - it’s just lucky that Foxy stops him in time. Plus I’d keep the whole bit with Eddie in Arkham torturing Bruce and Foxy, so he’d be tapping into his darker, slightly sadistic desires there (though in my scenario I picture him being influenced/brainwashed by Hugo into doing that - which, hi hi, has now been stolen as a plot by the show perhaps?? :p).
In the link above I stop my imagining at the end of S02, but listen... I HAVE SO MANY MORE FOXMA CANON-AU IDEAS, FOR REAL. IT KEEPS ME ENTERTAINED DURING BORING DAYS OKAY??
So, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, but you inspired me to write them down.
Please forgive me for the insanely extensive ramble!
So, as I hint in the link, I was thinking -
S03 Eddie as Chief of Staff to Ozzie plot al a canon
For purposes of ~drama I like to daydream that Eddie is on compulsory sick leave from the GCPD because whatever Hugo did to him at Arkham has been fucking him up a little - causing him to have violent episodes, hallucinations..... basically I guess the mental break that happened after he killed Tom in canon
Foxy has been the wonderful, caring, loving, supportive boyfriend we all know he would be and helping Ed as best he can through all this
Oh they are also totally living together now
But Ed is scared to talk to Foxy about all the dark impulses that Hugo’s tinkering has brought to light in him because Foxy is (so he thinks) all pure and stuff and Ed doesn’t want to burden him or risk scaring Foxy away
Plus Ed is going crazy not being able to work
So one day when he turns up at the GCPD trying to convince Jim to let him come back and is refused (politely and with sympathy) he just SNAPS and RAGE QUITS and stomps out... only to be found moping on the sidewalk a while later by Ozzie
Now Ozzie, like in canon, has grown rather fond of Ed due to Ed nursing him back to health after being shot by Galavan and ofc in this world from Eddie going to visit him in Arkham and then trying to save him from Hugo
So on learning that Ed has been, so Ozzie spins it, ‘fired’ for being ‘violent’ or whatever, Ozzie immediately offers Ed a job helping in his Mayoral campaign
Probably Ed and Ozzie end up having a little chat about violent impulses and the like too, because it’s easier to talk to an infamous violent criminal about such things than it is with a seemingly innocent, saintly boyfriend, causing Ed to immediately warm to the idea of working with Oswald and maybe by doing so being able to unburden himself of his troublesome thoughts/feelings and... maybe even find some possible outlets for them...? ie. being enticed towards darker acts like you suggest anon!
When Ed reveals this to Foxy though, Foxy is... NOT HAPPY with the idea of Ed working with a criminal like Ozzie. Partly because he does not approve of the idea of Oswald as a Mayor and partly because he fears it won’t be good for Ed’s mental health
Which leads to a HUGE FIGHT with Eddie claiming that Foxy is being unfair about Oswald and treating Ed like he’s a child who can’t make his own decisions and the more Foxy tries to explain that’s not true the worse it sounds and the madder Ed gets. Plus any defence of Ozzie is met with disdain by Foxy. Until eventually they build up to some kind of ultimatum where Foxy tells Ed that ofc he’s capable of making his own decisions, but if he agrees to work with Oswald then Foxy can’t in good conscious continue with their relationship!
So a furious Ed is just - FINE THEN! And packs up his stuff and leaves.
And you can tell that both of them regret this RIGHT AWAY - Ed hovering outside the door on the verge of returning, Foxy with his hand on the doorknob poised to go after Ed and apologise
But in a tragic twist of timing they fail to make up - just as Eddie is about to return some neighbours walk by and see him with his suitcase and he feels compelled to walk on, then just as he’s out of sight Foxy plucks up the courage to open the door only to find Ed gone, noooo
Leading to Eddie turning up at the Van Dahl mansion suitcase in hand (maybe wet too, let’s imagine it raining!) where he tells Ozzie - yes I’ll take the job, but, I also kinda need somewhere to stay...
This is where the nygmobblepot - enticement towards darkness part really comes in!
Ozzie welcomes Ed in with open arms ofc and his journey to becoming Mayor plays out pretty much as in canon, with Eddie doing his supportive stuff and dipping into ‘lightly’ criminal behaviour to do so
Ozzie completely falls for Ed along the way, makes him Chief of Staff etc.
Ed is maybe, slightly, starting to develop deeper feelings for Ozzie too... and maybe there’s a bit of a ‘rebound’ aspect to it, but maybe not... plus Ozzie HAS been constantly accepting of Ed’s ‘darkside’ without judgement, which endears him to Ed, as well as the opportunities Ozzie may have provided to allow Ed to indulge said darkness (letting Ed help with interrogations and the like)
(also a lot of the warmth we saw build between Ed and Ozzie in S02 would totally have happened here as well - so they’ve got that history)
Meanwhile Foxy has taken over Ed’s job at the GCPD and watches Ed’s advancement on the news with growing concern... but also a little pride? Because... Ed seems happy... and healthy... and... maybe Oswald isn’t doing a TERRIBLE job as Mayor? (since Foxy wouldn’t know about the ins and outs of Ozzie also running the criminal underworld and how ever more deeply involved Ed is becoming with that)
UNTIL
That fateful day Ozzie plucks up the courage to confess his feelings and Ed stops off at a liquor store to purchase a bottle of wine.......
Only ofc it’s not Isabella Ed runs into
So Ed finds Foxy while buying wine. They end up talking through the night. Both of them apologise for past behaviour. Foxy even reluctantly compliments Ozzie maybe. They both admit they miss each other. Feelings are rekindled. Kisses. They agree to try again.
Ed on learning the time, as in canon, rushes back to a frantic Ozzie and reveals that he and Foxy have decided to rekindle their romance and ISN’T IT GREAT?? :p
All the stuff about ‘second chances’ that Ed applied to Izzy in canon now fits rather nicely with him and Foxy :)
Ozzie’s jealousy progresses as in canon... to its inevitable conclusion (maybe there’s even a moment of crisis where Ed tries to break up with Foxy out of fear that he will hurt him, like he feared with Izzy, but Foxy also calms Ed’s fears... albeit without creepy cosplay... but maybe with rough sex though...? Foxy showing Ed that he’s not an innocent snowflake and can handle it if Ed needs to be a little dark...??)
OFC IN THIS SCENARIO OZZIE FAILS TO ACTUALLY KILL FOXY!
BUT - there’s a brief time where Foxy SEEMS to be dead (perhaps a mangled body was found in/by his crashed car that there is enough evidence to SUGGEST is Foxy for everyone to believe it... but actually it was a homeless man Foxy was giving a lift to a shelter or something... look you can’t expect me to think of ALL the details!)
AND OKAY HERE’S THE THING - while Ed thinks Foxy is dead, his whole development into The Riddler PLAYS OUT JUST AS IN CANON after Izzy died
So that’s - going through discovering Foxy was ‘murdered,’ blaming Butch, the whole bit with him and Tabby and the mini-guillotine, learning it was Ozzie who did it, teaming up with Babs etc against him, all the way to the docks and everything
Until we get lost and confused Ed post-Ozzie’s death going on his academic killing spree and sending riddles to the GCPD
Unhappily for Ed he only has poor Harvey to play with, since Jim is off doing important Court of Owls related plot business and Foxy is ofc unavailable
During it all Ed has some AMAZING hallucinations of BOTH OSWALD AND FOXY though... I confess I haven’t thought those through... but they DEFINITELY HAPPEN
How Harvey gets on with the chess and ‘belly of the beast’ stuff idk... maybe Lee helps... but somehow he muddles through to the finale with Eddie dangling him over the stairwell and asking his final three riddles
EXCEPT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GAME A WILD VERY MUCH ALIVE FOXY APPEARS AND BEGS ED TO STOP
Ofc Ed just thinks he’s hallucinating at first until Harvey exclaims his shock at Lucius being alive
Cue an intense, emotional conversation. Foxy, as in canon, twigs that Ed has killed Penguin. Ed counters, desperately - he killed you! Foxy is sympathetic. Loving. Reassuring Ed that he isn’t dead (he’s been in a coma listed as a John Doe or something, shhhh, details), that they can make this right
You can see Ed wants to believe this so badly... but he is torn... he’d built himself up into becoming a criminal, felt like fate had pushed him into it, he’d felt READY to be that man
How? he cries. How can we make this right? It’s not just Oswald. I’ve done things, killed people. I’ve killed people, Foxy, and I liked it!
It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, Foxy would insist. You’re still my Ed. My Riddler. Please, you don’t have to do this.
And Foxy would move closer, reaching out.
And Ed would be on the verge of taking Foxy’s hand.
...but that’s when the rope holding Harvey would snap.
And a pained Ed would shake his head and back away - I’m sorry. I’m sorry, it’s too late!
Leaving Foxy to catch a falling Harvey while Ed runs away
I’m sorry I know this is too long and ridiculous but it’s been on my mind for SO.LONG and I’ve got a whole Court of Owls bit as well
In an effort to slot this whole AU into the canon as much as I can I picture Ed going on to try and be a criminal like he does in the show - green suit, robbing three banks in one night and all that (but I’m vetoing the use of the name ‘Riddler’ at this point)
Meanwhile Foxy is, just, distraught back at the GCPD - INSISTING to Jim and everyone that Ed is not himself, that he needs help, that they need to find him, that if they just find him he can talk Ed down he promises
And Jim is sympathetic probably, reassuring Foxy that the GCPD is doing all they can, that they all care about Ed (which may or may not be stretching the truth some at this point) and will do their best to bring him in without hurting him (Kristen, who is still alive, is also on Ed’s side maybe?)
Then we’ve got Babs drawing Ed into the Court of Owls stuff
And Ed in this AU is... much more obviously conflicted about his current life choices and acting reckless/suicidal (because dramatic death seems like an easy way out of his current emotional struggles)
So, as in canon, he jumps at the chance to poke at a dangerous, secret organisation
The whole thing with the Mayor and Jim at the GCPD plays out and Jim lets the Court capture Ed (which Foxy is PISSED to learn about after the fact because W.T.F Jim you promised you would bring him in safe! why didn’t you tell me? I could have talked him out of it if I’d been there!)
Cue Ed discovering Ozzie is alive and the two of them teaming up to bust out together
Cut to Foxy returning to the GCPD late at night - he’s forgotten a file he needs, he’s been very distracted lately
Only when he enters the building he finds - ED, in full ‘not-Riddler’ outfit, sitting at one of the desks
Foxy assumes Ed has come to see him, but what he doesn’t notice is that Ed is as surprised to see him as Foxy is to find him
But before they can have a real conversation - Jim arrives
And Foxy, like, PANICS and jumps in front of Jim, yelling at Ed to run, to just go, he’ll stop Jim, Ed just needs to get out before he’s caught (Foxy has grown less enamoured of the plan to have the GCPD catch Ed since Jim let the Court take him)
Except Ed just puts a quiet hand on Foxy’s shoulder and tells Foxy he’s sweet... but actually it’s Jim he’s come to see, dun dun!
TWIST - it turns out that Ed has been WORKING WITH/FOR JIM ever since Babs approached him about the Court
Eddie had found Jim and offered to become a spy on the Court if Jim promised to clear his criminal record in return
Meaning the whole ‘letting Ed be captured by the Court’ was really a ruse Jim and Ed had concocted together to get Ed inside the Court
Brief comedy moment where Jim is all - nice to see where your priorities lie though, Lucius - about Foxy trying to help Ed escape justice :p
Foxy is all - ?????? about all this ofc. But focuses on how dangerous it was for Ed to let himself be captured by the Court
Ed just shrugs off his possible death - it’s the only way he could see to untangle himself from the criminal he’d become, to stand any chance of him and Foxy getting back to how they were
There’s a quick debrief with Jim - unfortunately Ed learnt little, only that Ozzie is still alive (which Jim already knew at this point) and that the Court are planning something big
Foxy wants to take Ed home at this point - end the whole thing. But Ed thinks he should go back to Babs etc - that he might be able to learn more while still a criminal
(also secretly Ed is still reeling over Ozzie not being dead and there is a dark part of him that very much wants to try and kill Ozzie again)
Then we have Jervis and his blood being needed to cure the virus the Court unleashes
In canon Ed helps Babs take Jervis from Jim, then Jim bargains with Ed, offering him Ozzie to get him to hand Jervis over....
I’m fuzzy on how this would work in the AU... maybe Ed actually helps figure out that Jervis’ blood is key to the cure?
...I think...he would have to NOT be involved in Babs kidnapping Jervis, because he’d WANT Jim, Foxy etc to get Jervis’ blood, WANT to help cure the virus
But Babs ends up with Jervis anyways
So in this scenario Ed calls Jim to let him know he can get him Jervis..... BUT.... in the meantime Ed has discovered Jim has Ozzie and his dark impulses get the better of him - he refuses to hand Jervis over unless Jim delivers Ozzie
He tried to kill the man I love, Jim, Ed insists.
So Jim, making very sure not to tell Foxy, agrees
We get the warehouse scene (...maybe without the hand grenade around Jervis... maybe not :p)
Followed by Ozzie knocking Ed out, the car, Ed seemingly escaping...
...and on to the second docks scene
EXCEPT EXCEPT EXCEPT
When it comes to the pivotal moment when Ed has the chance to shoot Ozzie again and get it right this time...
...HE DOESN’T
He thinks of Foxy and of the better man Foxy sees in him and realises that’s the man he wants to be
I can’t, he says. If I do this, Lucius and I are over. I can’t be this man and still be with him.
He gives Ozzie back the gun
Ozzie gives him a curious look
You really love him, don’t you?
Ed nods
Ozzie nods back, understanding. Then lifts the gun and pulls the trigger
It’s unloaded ofc - and Ozzie explains about taking out the bullets, nods to where Freeze and Ivy are appearing behind Eddie
Ed asks if Ozzie is going to kill him and Ozzie says he considered it, that he considered worse - it all depended on what Ed chose to do
But since Ed chose to spare him, Ozzie spares Ed as well and tells him to go back to the man he loves - something sappy about life only giving you one true love and Ed is lucky to have found his
Maybe Ed looks at Ozzie thoughtfully (slightly longingly?) for a moment and says something about - maybe, in another lifetime...
Cut to Foxy returning home after... helping with the virus cure... whatever he was doing at the end of S03!
Ed is waiting for him inside. In the dark, so Foxy is surprised by him when he turns on the light. Because Ed is embracing his Extraness now :p
INTENSE EMOTIONAL CONVERSATION
Foxy has discovered that Ed asked for Oswald and Jim gave him up and confronts Ed about it
Ed says he took Oswald to the docks to shoot him... but like, leaves it a little unclear for a bit what actually happened because he wants to know how Foxy would react to him having killed Ozzie, for real this time
And here’s my kicker - Foxy disapproves... but he accepts it. Is willing to still be with Ed, even knowing Ed has committed premeditated murder in what is arguably sound mind (his killing spree after Foxy’s ‘death’ being something Foxy has been justifying as a result of mental illness)
Which is, ofc, a hell of an emotional boost to Ed!
Cue angry, relieved punching when Ed reveals the truth
...some stuff with Ed insisting that he’s different now - they can’t go back to how they were, there’s a ‘darkness’ in him and that’s not going to change
Foxy telling him he understands.
Something like - this is Gotham, living here, you need some darkness in you or you won’t survive...
....some kind of fancy wordplay anyways that shows that Foxy can handle darkness and isn’t exactly all light himself
Which leads to kinky sex
THE END
only not ofc :p
because you have all of S04...
I don’t have a full plot for that, but I imagine Ed getting involved with Ozzie’s battle with Sofia somehow, because Ed withstanding torture for Ozzie and Ozzie giving up his revenge for Ed is just.... TOO GOOD and I need it to exist in this AU as well...
I have out of context ideas about Ed helping with Martin as well still, and he, Foxy AND OSWALD end up all living together with Martin for a bit (or at least Martin lives with Ed and Foxy and Ozzie comes to visit)
...which ties in to my secret Endgame Scenario where, in the midst of proper Batman times, Ozzie EVENTUALLY (after lots of criminal shenanigans) ends up going (mostly) legit and he, Eddie and Foxy develop a working poly relationship... but that’s in the far future :p
(also I’ve got a whole ~THING where Eddie finds out Foxy works for Batman - cos it’s not Foxy’s secret to tell, right? so I figure he would feel honour bound to keep the fact Bruce is Batman even from his boyfriend... only Eddie is not dumb and notices Foxy working later than he should and maybe Foxy’s excuses don’t hold up and whatnot and long story short Eddie becomes, reluctantly, convinced that FOXY MUST BE HAVING AN AFFAIR, even though it doesn’t fit his character AT ALL and by all accounts shouldn’t make sense... so anyway, yeah, he confronts Foxy, and Foxy CAN’T tell him the truth, so with Foxy refusing to explain himself Eddie is forced to conclude that his suspicions must be correct and it’s all just awkward and upsetting...
...only obviously Ed finds out the truth soon after - I keep picturing a scene where he comes upon Barbara Gordon at the GCPD (which Eddie goes back to work at fyi - teaming up with Foxy there for a bit till Foxy goes back to Wayne Enterprises). He finds her trying to hack into Batman’s radio, because she’s a fan. And because Eddie needs a distraction from his homelife (and is also a fan) he helps her and they succeed, only to listen in to Batman having a conversation WITH FOXY, leaving Ed all - ??????!
and ofc he hijacks the line and is all - FOXY THE FUCK?!
...followed by a shocked (slightly awed) - FOXY OMG ARE YOU HAVING AN AFFAIR WITH BATMAN??
to which Bruce and Lucius are both - aaaaah! wow, omg, fucking NO!
...and yeah, that’s how Ed finds out his boyfriend works for the Bat and ultimately leads to him (and Barbara) joining the team :p)
Soooo... yes... there we go. A more detailed look into my ‘Ed and Foxy were friends at uni’ foxma AU version of Gotham/Batman, including Eddie having an ongoing, complicated relationship with Oswald which involves him constantly struggling with his darker impulses and being tempted to... less than lawful/ethical/moral behaviour.
(I feel like maybe sometimes as well, when Eddie is working alongside the Bat Fam, he maybe... quietly orchestrates things so certainly particularly vile villains end up, um, ‘unalive’ ...but in ways that aren’t obviously deliberate... or maybe even occasionally, secretly teams up with Ozzie to help bump off various people...
oh shit and yeah that’s the other thing - in this AU, when Eddie becomes Oracle!Riddler... mostly I just take it as read that Ozzie 100% knows it’s him from the get go... but he just... never says anything... and even though he knows that technically he could probably go after Eddie and try and torture the identity of Batman out of him, Ozzie just... doesn’t... because - love, you know? ;p)
God this is way too long, I’m so very sorry...

Just Call Me (Ang)el of the Morning | Mileven AU
In the early stages of a November storm that’s set to keep him inside for three days, college student Mike Wheeler wants nothing more than to eat takeaway pizza and sleep the weekend away. But taking it easy proves harder than he first expected when, by chance, he finds a lone girl sat out on his balcony, huddled beneath the string lights his roommate hung up last year. With nothing but an ‘I heart Indianapolis’ t-shirt to clothe her, she’s a strange, beautiful sight to behold, but she’s one Mike isn’t sure he knows what to do with. Bringing her inside to keep her warm and offering her a towel is one thing, but when she starts talking about fate and soulmates and guardian angels, Mike’s in for a hell of a surprise.
Words: 1k+ | Relationship: Mike/Eleven | Characters: Mike & Eleven | Genre: Romance, Humour, Fluff, Mystery | The ‘El is short for Angel’ AU nobody asked for
[Short one-shot drabble below the cut]
“How did you even get here?”
He’s never heard of anybody just randomly, magically appearing on somebody’s balcony - not if they live on the fourth floor of an apartment complex, and especially not if they’re only dressed in a t-shirt, soaked from the heavy downpour outside.
“You let me in,” the young woman frowns, brows neatly, softly furrowing in confusion, “from the balcony.”
“No, no, I know that.” Mike says, and he shakes his head with a resigned sigh, lips pursing, “I meant, how did you get there?” He swallows, and he’s not ignorant to the way she watches him, staring at his throat with wide eyes and a titled head as his Adam’s apple bobs. “Did you… did you climb up or something?”
She only blinks, twice, and her shoulders rise and fall as she shrugs. She takes a tentative step closer to Mike, curiosity clear on her face as she approaches him, slow and steady and almost in a dawdle. “I don’t know.”
“How did you even get here?”
He’s never heard of anybody just randomly, magically appearing on somebody’s balcony - not if they live on the fourth floor of an apartment complex, and especially not if they’re only dressed in a t-shirt, soaked from the heavy downpour outside.
It’s strange, maybe weirder than anything else Mike has ever seen or heard or read about. And, truth be told, he isn’t sure what would of happened to her if hadn’t decided to pull his curtains back at that very moment - estimating how long his pizza would take to arrive due to the oncoming storm. The weatherman on the lunchtime news report had advised everyone to stay indoors and keep warm, so Mike has no possible understanding as to why this girl was outside, in the rain, curled up in a ball halfway up a building, barely clothed and shivering from the chilly November air.
So now, here she’s stood. Inside, in a damp ‘I heart Indianapolis’ t-shirt that’s two sizes too big, with a warm towel thrown over her shoulders because, while he’s confused and amazed and bewildered all at once, he’s also not a complete mouthbreather.
(His mother always taught him to be hospitable to guests. This totally counts.)
Her top is sticking to the tops of her legs, just above her knees, and the towel around her shoulders hangs down her frame carelessly, like it’s just been flung over her for the sake of it, like she didn’t want it but accepted it anyway. He would have offered her his sweater - or, well, maybe not the one he’s wearing - but he’s kind of hoping she won’t be here for too long.
“I don’t know.” She says, melodiously calm and sweet, voice laced with honey the same as her eyes. She’s still wide-eyed as she stops right in front of the young man, hands behind her back as she gawks up at him, unassuming. “I don’t know what happened.”
At that, Mike offers the slightest raise of his left brow, and he gazes down at her - standing about a foot shorter than him - with some semblance of uncertainty, “And I don’t understand.”
(He has half a mind to call the cops and let them deal with her. The other half of his brain is just screaming Mike! Girl! Pretty!, and he kind of hates himself for having been a total wastoid around girls for most of his life.)
The brunette nods, and her hands move from behind her back to clasp in front of her, fingers threading. Her eyes seem to darken, now a soberer, melancholic shade of brown compared to moments ago and she says, “I feel like I know you.”
“You do?” Mike asks, and he regrets his question immediately.
She rests her hand on his shoulders, stretching up on her tiptoes and pulling on his frame until he’s leaning down and she’s just about tall enough to stare into his eyes directly. “You have kind eyes.”
Unable to stop the blush that rises to his cheeks, Mike simply ducks his head, and he can pretend for all of maybe five seconds that this strange girl he found on his balcony isn’t the prettiest person he’s ever seen.
“They told me you’d be kind.”
“What?” His head snaps up then, and suddenly Mike is peeling her hands from his shoulders, temporary daze broken. To her credit, she doesn’t seem to mind. Her arms drop, and she sways back and forth on her feet, bare and sticky from the dirty balcony with her toes wiggling. Mike rasps out a, “Who told you?”, and he stares her down as though he’s trying to force a confession out of her.
“The people.” The girl looks up, eyes focusing on the white paint of the ceiling. She smiles absentmindedly as her gaze lowers back to his face, settling on his mouth, and she whispers, “When they sent me to you.”
“People sent you?” It’s not that he doesn’t believe her, it’s just that the circumstances of her arrival, of her appearance aren’t very clear, and she isn’t exactly doing much to explain herself.
(Does he need to call someone? Is she planning on murdering him? Is his pizza ever going to arrive? Maybe she’s not even real.)
And, though he’s far from being the greatest of samaritans, he’s pretty sure he’s never done anything to merit having a bounty hunter on his case. Either that, or she’s just plain mad. And if he’s being honest with himself, it’s probably the latter. “People sent you to me.” He states, “You’re gonna have to explain this to me a little bit more because I don’t know what to do here.” He tells, earnest and with a shaky timber to his voice.
She nods but she doesn’t reply, and then she dampens her lips with perhaps the slowest flick of a tongue he’s ever seen and Mike is flushed.
“I thought you said you didn’t know how you got here.” He tries, distracting himself, arguing. The space between his eyebrows creases as he contemplates the young woman in front of him.
She’s petite, thin, and, while his biceps aren’t huge and his upper body strength leaves much to be desired, he’s almost certain that he could pick her up with an ease, a smoothness. She just stands before him, all barefoot and tan legs, button nose and chocolate brown curls. She looks at him as though she’s a lost puppy he’s just brought in from off of the street, all curious and thankful and polite. She’s almost ethereal in the way she sways on the balls of her feet, face expressionless save for a small smile.
After a moment, she finally speaks, and it’s with a step closer to him - in his face, invading his space and stealing his oxygen - that she says, I don’t know that. I just know why I’m here.”
“And why are you here?” He doesn’t mean for it to come out so blunt, to sound so sharp, but he can’t help it. She’s strange, and pretty, she’s filling him with nerves, second by second, breath by breath. She’s riddling him with anxiety and making him blush with just a look. “What do you want with me?”
“Don’t you know?” She voices, “I’m your angel, Mike.”
(He can’t have heard that right, surely. And how did she-)
Mike blinks, and he’s stunned into disbelief, voice higher as he squeaks, “You’re my what?”
(She’s definitely crazy, and he’s totally losing his mind.)

Curious Conundrum (Part 4 - Repost)
Prompt: You’re John Watson’s sister. One day you decide to visit your brother for lunch, only to meet the infamous Mr. Holmes…
Word Count: 2381
Warnings: language, flirtation, sexual innuendos (maybe? idfk), murder/crime/case related stuff, angst…
Notes: This is a repost, since some were having trouble viewing. I did not add a keep reading since that seems to be what’s broken. Sorry for the long shit, but gotta make sure y’all can read it.
Beta’d by @carryonmyswansong Not only did she beta, but I literally couldn’t have written half these scenes without her help. She contributed majorly, even wrote some parts of scenes. I am forever in her debt.
Also, this starts AFTER Season 2, episode 1. I don’t follow all the episodes, but it does follow the timeline and hit some major events : )
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“What are you doing?” John wondered nearly two weeks later as he walked into the living room. Sherlock seemed absorbed in his laptop.
Half of his attention on John, he slowly answered, “I am testing your sister.”
“Y/N? Why?”
“I want to know the full extent of her abilities,” he noted.
“Why?”
“Because I very rarely meet anyone who isn’t entirely dull or moronic, so when I meet someone who might even entertain the idea, I embrace it.”
“You mean someone who isn’t crazy like Moriarty or Irene Adler?”
“Precisely,” Sherlock hummed quietly.
“Well, she always appreciates a good challenge,” John remarked.
“That’s what I’m hoping for,” Sherlock idly mumbled.
Sherlock texted you after a few hours of work.
“Are you up for a challenge?”
You smiled, curious at what he was offering.
“Possibly. What’s the challenge?”
“Meet me at my flat. I’ll show you.”
Intrigued, you grabbed your things and nearly made a bee-line over to him, a little embarrassed at how easily you just jumped up because he asked you to. But who were you kidding? You were utterly fascinated by him.
The three of you had ventured together on a few cases in the last few weeks. Every time, you and Sherlock were practically finishing each other’s sentences. He seemed impressed by you, but wouldn’t show it more than a word or two of praise, and the reserved smirk that would dance across his face. His eyes would scan your body, watch you as you worked. You thought it was just him being curious, wanting to observe you and how your mind worked, but it was so much more than that. He felt something for you, something deep, and the only chance he could stare at you without social repercussion was when you were working together.
Little did he know, you were doing the same. You couldn’t help but stare at him. Watch him work. Admire his coat, his sharp cheekbones, the way his hands flitted about when he was thinking, the way his eyes squeezed shut in thought or snapped open in revelation. Your eyes never left his body, wanting desperately to drink him in. Every deduction, every case solved, every detail unveiled, was another way to your heart. Nothing impressed you more than an intelligent man, and God did he have a lot of intelligence to go around.
If the two of you weren’t solving cases rapidly, you seemed to trade music back and forth on the violin. You brought your old instrument out of some cobwebs from home, had the bow restrung, the strings replaced and finely tuned, and the two of you would play. Sherlock liked it to help him hone his thoughts and focus, you liked it for the relaxation. Then it seemed if music wasn’t filling the flat, the two of you read side by side, all myriads of things.
Time with Sherlock was…nice, to say the least. You didn’t have many friends – okay, scratch that, you didn’t have any friends other than John technically, so to find someone on the same wavelength as you was a godsend. You felt utterly blessed that he even allowed you in his presence, as John had made it abundantly clear that if Sherlock Holmes did not like someone, he would make it known. Yet, Sherlock seemed to reciprocate the feelings, always texting you and asking if you were coming by today, asking if you could help on cases, asking how your day was going.
If you didn’t know any better, and you probably did, you’d say you were falling for Sherlock Holmes, if you hadn’t already.
Arriving at the apartment you were more than curious when Sherlock nearly jumped at the sight of you.
“Y/N! Excellent, now we can get started,” he said as he handed you an envelope.
“What is this?” you wondered, taking the envelope.
“Oh, dear, I thought you were brighter than that. This is an envelope, if you open it, there are contents inside you can read,” he stated, his tone saturated with sarcasm.
“Oh, gosh, thank you, Mr. Holmes. I had no idea that’s what this was,” you said in an equally mocking tone. You opened the envelope and read the contents, Sherlock staring at you the entire time. “It’s a riddle?” you questioned, your eyes drifting up to Sherlock who was closer than you expected.
“Mhm.”
“And you need help solving it or what?”
“No. I created them, and when you solve one, it will lead us to the next clue.”
“You…made a scavenger hunt for me?” you wondered, a glimmer of joy in your stomach.
“In a sense,” he noted with a head nod. “It’s a test. I want to see how good you are.”
“Good at deduction?”
“Yes.”
You nodded slowly, taking a deep breath. “Okay…Well let’s see here,” you said, reading the riddle. It was almost set up like Clue. There were a list of suspects, the events that took place, and the typical ‘who done it’ at the end. You eyeballed the information for about three minutes before you finally answered, “His sister.”
“And how did you come to that conclusion?” he wondered, his hands behind his back as he assessed you.
“It said he drowned in the bathtub, woman typically drown people, and a men wouldn’t typically attack a nude man. She’s the only one to gain anything from the murder.”
“Excellent. Now, where is our next destination?” he inquired with an excited look.
“I don’t know. How am I supposed to know?”
“The answer is in the answer…” he noted and you frowned at him.
“What?”
“You heard me,” he repeated.
“Okay but the answer was Doyen Noel, how the hell–Oh my god, it’s an anagram. It’s the London Eye!”
“You got that quicker than expected,” he admitted.
“Wow, thanks,” you said with an eye roll.
“Oh, come now, don’t be offended. I at least assumed you would get it, that’s a far better expectation than I had for your brother,” he noted with a coyish grin.
Silence passed between you two for a moment, but then the comment got the better of you two and you began giggling.
Still laughing, you asked, “So we go to London Eye now?”
“Indeed we do.”
The two of you began to leave the flat when John stopped you. “Where are you going?”
“To scavenge London,” you said with a wink, Sherlock right behind you.
“The game is on, Watson,” he remarked with a grin at your brother.
As the two of you got in the cab that he hailed, he asked you, “So why an attorney?”
“Why a detective?” you shot back.
“Come now, I’m not being coy.”
“Neither am I,” you remarked honestly. It was one of your deepest desires to get to know every little thing about Sherlock.
“I asked you first,” he commented.
“Well, if you must know, I wanted to help put people away.”
“But you’re a defending attorney,” he noted.
“I was a defending attorney,” you corrected.
“Was? What changed?”
“My job,” you said with a smirk.
“Clever,” Sherlock dryly remarked.
“I had a change of heart,” you confessed, giving him a real answer.
“What? Why?”
You shrugged. “Well, I thought my job would be helpful. I thought I would mainly get innocent people off or help get some real justice for the guilty ones. You know, maybe if they had a minor offense, I could help get their sentence minimized. But as time went on, I had more guilty clients than innocent ones and…well it made me sick to help get them back on the streets.”
“Sudden change of morality…” he mused.
You nodded. “I suppose so. So now, I can use my power of deduction for good, like you.”
“Oh, don’t make me a hero,” he pleaded, a tone of irritation lacing through him.
“I wouldn’t dream of it, Holmes,” you remarked. You knew him well enough to know that he wouldn’t want you to paint him in some sort of heroic light. “You aren’t a detective for the ethical pragmatism of it. You’re a detective because you love the chase, the game, the hunt, whatever you want to call it. It gets you off.”
“Did John say that?”
“No. I did. I can tell,” you said with a shrug. “I’ve watched you for all of five seconds and I could tell. You get excited at the thought of outdoing anyone, about knowing you’re the best.”
“Does that put you off?”
“Why would it?”
“It does everyone else,” he noted as he looked out the window.
“Well I’m not everyone else. I could give a damn less why you do it…I just love that you do it. So long as you’re right and the bad guy gets put away, who the hell cares what you’re reasoning is.”
He turned back to you, a curious look on his face. “It’s…refreshing to hear that.”
“You’re welcome,” you stated with a smile.
The two of you arrived at the Eye and he directed you towards the envelope that was taped in an unusual, inconspicuous place.
“Oooh, next clue,” you noted as you opened the envelope. You read the note, Sherlock’s eyes locked on you yet again, watching your every move. As soon as you began to think about the riddle, Sherlock grabbed the note from you.
“And that’s all for today,” he noted, holding it in the air away from you.
“What?” you exclaimed, a smile spreading over your face. “Give it back! I need to solve it, dammit!”
“You get to think on it for the night, and give me your answer tomorrow,” he said with a playful smile.
“Sherlock! Dammit, give me the note! What the hell?” you asked, grabbing at the note, but it was futile. He was much taller with a much longer arm.
“We can’t have all this fun in one night. Besides, I wouldn’t want you to over exercise your mind.”
You narrowed your eyes at him playfully. “Oh screw you, Holmes. Give me the clue. I can do this.”
“Oh, I’m sure you can, Watson, but I would much rather see you squirm for it,” he noted, looking down at you. It was just then you realized your body was pressed against his, your chest on his chest, his face only inches from yours. The air between you two was playful but giving way to something else, at least for you. A blush rose in your cheeks as you quickly backed away and turned your face, hiding the signs of your infatuation.
“Uh, alright, I’ll think on it tonight,” you quietly said.
Sherlock nodded, trying to brush away the feelings he suddenly had. “Right. Well…while we’re here, care to ride the giant tourist trap?”
You glanced to the ride and nodded. “Sure, yes.”
The two of you boarded The Eye and it began ascending. Not wanting to miss the view, you made your way over to the edge, where Sherlock joined you.
“Marvelous work on the Johnson case last week, by the way,” Sherlock said. “It was fascinating that they used copper to keep the smell of blood–”
“Work?” you started, cutting him off as you stared at the vast beautiful view before you. A frown formed on your face, as did his. “That’s really what you want to talk about right now?” you questioned, glancing at him.
“Typically yes.”
You smiled at his brute honesty, one thing you admired about him.
“And right now? With me, is that what you want to talk about?” you questioned again, your voice dropping lower.
He looked down at you for a moment before answering, “No. No…I want to know why a successful and brilliant girl like you isn’t a detective, or a scientist. You’re highly analytical but you use those skills to work a courtroom, why?”
A grin flashed across your face as you turned back to the view, but his eyes stayed on your face. “I suppose…I wanted to use my skills to help people.”
“Being a scientist or a detective does that. Something about law must’ve drawn you in, what was it?”
“You’re the greatest detective in the world, can you not deduce it?” you inquired with a teasing tone.
“I find I often have trouble deciphering you, but not to mention deducing peoples motive’s doesn’t always come as quickly as their immediate actions,” he admitted.
You paused a moment, pressing your lips in a line as you thought. “I suppose…I wanted to make a difference, like John. He’s a doctor, and he was in the army. Science…it’s too impersonal. Sure, medicine science, you could be saving someone’s life, but whose? As an attorney, I work with people, I get to know their stories. I got to defend cases I felt like needed defending, I got to help innocent people, and now, I’m going to help put the bad people behind bars.”
“Hmm, I see.”
“Do you? I know you don’t exactly see good versus bad…”
“No, I don’t, but that doesn’t mean I can’t admire those who do?”
“Oh, so you admire me?” you teased with a turned up smile.
He chanced a half smile and said, “I’ll leave you to your deductions. But speaking of admiring, I couldn’t help but notice you’re not married.”
“What? Because I don’t have a wedding ring? You know not everyone wears–”
“Because you spend countless nights at our home, you’re available at a moment’s notice, you are physically fit, and you pour time into your work. You’re married to your work, not a person. So tell me – why.”
“Aren’t you?”
“Yes, but you’re not the one who asked. I am. So why, a successful, young, smart woman like you. Why has no one snatched you up?”
“Perhaps…I didn’t want to be snatched up…” you suggested with a sullen smile.
BNHA Fic Recc List
Ok, so here's my fic recc list (AO3 exclusive) for Boku no hero academia/My hero academia. It's in no order but I order I bookmarked them. I'll probably come back and make edits when I find new stories.
MS- Manga Spoilers, so anything after season 2 in the anime. DFO- Dad for one story
Smile Again AU by Sevi007- a series of stories about mostly Dad Might and Izuku learning to work together and be a little family. Adorable. MS. Platonic/family pairings.
A riddle to guess if you can by PitViperOfDoom- All Might gives the new Number One a piece of his mind. No pairings.
Breach by ForgedObsidian- Toshinori's injury cause bad days but this one just might end up finishing up for good. MS. Family parings.
Solar Flare by jinkiess- The story that spawned my headcanon that young Toshinori was a bitter, angry young man. It's short but man I love this idea for Quirkless Young Might. No pairings.
Getting to Know You by TaurusVersant- The members of 1-A reflect on Midoriya Izuku and their daily interactions. Great characterization and I'm a sucker for people appreciating my boy. MS. Platonic pairings.
Barology by MissAquarius- A beautiful little piece exploring the Izuku/Iida/Urakara friendship. Platonic pairings.
A Shared Consequence by GuardianLioness- The cold causes pain for both Toshinori's old bones and Izuku's injuries. Family pairings.
Reunions, Of A Sort by ForgedObsidian- All Might joins the kids on a trip to a hero museum and reminisces on old heroes with a stranger. MS. No pairings.
Get Well Soon by brickboat- Jirou sometimes eavesdrops on her teachers while bored in her class and hears some interesting things about All Might. Really good, has 2 sequels if you liked. MS. No pairings.
Off Beat by ForgedObsidian- Jirou hears something wrong with All Might's heart. No pairings.
United in the Storm by theslytherinpaladin- The Villain Alliance becomes interested in Izuku and makes a statement by killing his mother leaving Izuku lost and alone. AU. Character death. No pairings.
Out of Character by PitViperOfDoom- Aizawa sees no problem with Endeavor talking to his son after the license exam but Midoriya seems worried. Dadzawa to the rescue. MS. No pairings.
count your blessings not your flaws by PitViperofDoom- probably my favorite Tododeku oneshot. The idea of Izuku thinking that Todoroki would joke about liking and Todoroki thinking that Izuku laughed in his face about his feelings hurts but then becomes sweet comfort
by you gotta get up at least once more by simkjrs- AU where Izuku follows the OPM training regimen and accidently becomes stronger than should be possible for a quirkless nobody. Sounds like crack, is actually about character development and Izuku's incredible perseverance. MS. A couple of hinted pairings (ShinDeku, TodoDeku etc) but nothing outright.
Yesterday Upon The Stair by PitViperOfDoom-  Izuku is given One For All but he forgets to mention to All Might that he isn't quirkless and has the ability to see dead people. Amazing story that twists canon with the addition of Izuku's ghostly friends and enemies. Good depiction of Bakugou's past abuse. AU. No pairings. Some graphic descriptions.
U.A Unsolved by  kabukichou- a silly spin-off of YUTS where the kids at the dorm believe it's haunted by ghosts. Little do they know that it is but because Izuku lives there. Hilarious and a nice break from the stress of YUTS. AU. No pairings
United We Stand, Divided We Fall by CaptainKaruAndTheRedShirts- My favorite of the Mighty Family AU's I've read (All Might is married to Inko and Izuku's biological father). Izuku coping with his father's injury, later being outed as the Number One's son and coping with being a quirkless shame to his dad's legacy. AU. Toshinko.
One Life for Them All (If That's What It Takes) by AthanatosOra- Toshinori comes across a precocious 11 year old named Izuku and considers him for a successor. Little does he know it's actually an adult Izuku who has been sent back to his 11 year old self trying to relive his life, and maybe make a few changes. AU. Family/platonic pairings.
The thin gray line by A_ToastToTheOutcasts-  All Might may have shot down his dreams of heroism but Japan's former #1 vigilante believes Izuku can make a difference. Vigilante Izuku is amazing and wow, yes, so good. AU. No pairings.
know what i've made by the marks on my hands by simkjrs- All quirks are the result of guardian spirits. Izuku is the only one who can see them but he really wishes he couldn't. Sassy Izuku ftw, I love this so much. AU. No pairings.
Mr. Yagi by AoiMikans and Swiftwidget- the men and women who work at Might Tower have come to adore the tall sickly man who serves as All Might's personal secretary. Precious to the max. Minor Tsukauchi/Toshinori.
Erased Potential by theslytherinpaladin- Aizawa has enough going on trying to teach his lazy students but the quirkless middle school who showed up at his door, begging to be trained, shows potential. So so good. AU. Dadzawa.
Daymare by IntrospectiveInquisitor- Izuku lives his whole life pretending to be quirkless because it's better than acknowledging his nightmarish quirk. AU. Platonic pairings and hinted KiriDeku. Warning for graphic horror descriptions and violence.
break your bones not your promises by PitViperofDoom- Look I don’t even like fantasy but I really love Pit’s approach here. It’s a blend of modern life with the fantatsical realm all stuffed into bnha world. The characterization is really good and the worldbuilding captivating. AU
Atimy by milky- Izuku and Yaoyorozu hear a noise in the middle of the night and check it out. The real horror of the story is what's revealed in the notes at the end. MS. No pairings.
Moebius by PitViperOfDoom- Izuku, Urakara, Tsuyu, Iida and Todoroki head to a seaside town for a rest but end up caught in the midst of a deadly attack that repeats itself over and over. Minor Tododeku.
i'm proud to say i got you by taizi- Iida takes notice of the way Midoriya stutters and flinches and draws some unhappy conclusions about the life his friend lived before Yuuei. I'm a sucker for 'Izuku's past abuse is acknowledged and refuted' stories. MS. Platonic pairings.
It's Spelled 'Trader' Not 'Traitor' by JackobolTrades- Izuku is taken in by All For One and given his quirk. Instead of using it for villainy, he sneaks off and opens a quirk trading shop because even AFO couldn't steal his desire to help people. AU. Brief/Unwilling Toga/Deku.
starry eyed and history has its eye on you and another face in the crowd and know who you are and will I ever be more than I’v always been? and who lives, who dies, who tells your story and all the love i dreamt by aloneintherain- beautiful and amazing. Look into class 1-A 10 years in the future as heroes and friends. Various stories told through the eyes of the students and media. Wonderful beyond measure, can't reread enough. Tododeku, Kiribaku, Jiroruzo.
home is just a room full of my safest sounds by aloneintherain- Izuku and Todoroki end up in a cuddle buddy sleeping arrangement for various reasons but end up really coming to enjoy the peace they feel together, super cute.
Conversations with a Cryptid by AMournfulHowlInTheNight- After his capture, Izuku begins having weekly meetings with All For One to extract information but can he really handle the revelations? AU. DFO. MS. No pairings. Izuku's brains get the spotlight and hints at one of my favorite theories
Kidnapping of a Cryptid by AMournfulHowlInTheNight- The sequel to the above story. I can't really give any details without spoiling but this whole series is amazing and I recc it so much. I talk way too much about it but it's so good. AU. MS. Pairing I can't mention
Aphelion by ForgedObsidian- Izuku is kidnapped as a middle schooler by AFO due to his quirklessness. Luckily Izuku isn't alone in captivity and has the sickly Mr. Yagi to keep him company. If only All Might hasn't been missing for several years. AU. No Pairings
Patience and I Would Understand and You Found Me (on a summer breeze) and Guide to Getting Your Teacher a Date and Little Talks by yaanchan- The best 'Aizawa takes in Shinsou' fics I've ever read. I have? so many emotions. Made me ship Erasermic. AU. MS. Erasermic.  Try, Try Again is mostly in this series but Shinsou gets turned into a 4 year old.
Switched and Scattered by kazzarole- The typical bodyswap story but it's really well-done also absolutely hilarious. You'd think it'd be easier to impersonate each other when they're crushing so hard. Tododeku.
Conventional Taste by SoAshamed- Todoroki's grandparents are in town and he'd wish to avoid them so he agrees to go with Midoriya to QuirkCon, Japan's biggest hero convention. Queue Deku being an overenthusiastic fanboy and Todoroki being content just watching him. MS. Mild Tododeku
count your blessings, not your flaws by PitViperofDoom- Izuku has only ever been confessed to as a joke so when Todoroki says he loves him, Izuku can't bring himself to believe it. Tododeku.
a beacon in the dark by Nohaijachi- At 4 years old, Izuku woke up one day unable to see. Completely blind, Izuku does his best to survive in a world with both a disability and a supposed diagnosis of quirklessness. Really good guys, updates very often. Family pairings.
Re-Examined Archives by beachbb- 15 year old Izuku is thrust by a quirk 10 years into the future only to find out he was murdered several years previous by a serial killer. Now it’s up to Izuku, plus friends from the past and future to unravel the cold case and maybe prevent it from happening. MS. No pairings.
Save The Last Dance by Lesetoilesfous- Based off the Fantasy AU ending, Izuku lives in the town of Silvia, home to the great All Might. As the All Might’s successor, it is his duty to confront the evil storm that threatens the kingdoms. With his friends, and a few alluring strangers, they set off on a journey to defeat the evil. AU. Tododeku, Momojirou, Tsuychako, Bakushima, Erasermic. I may be missing some but everyone is gay so there.
Izuku is (Afraid) by sleepingugly- this fic haunts me, it’s SO good and it just put me on edge the entire time and I couldn’t stop reading because the tension was mounting and driving me nuts. Izuku is haunted by the ocean, he attends quirk counselling for a quirk he should have but doesn’t, something sinister is rising. AU. No pairings.
Choices by Fayah- Another AFO is Hisashi fic in which Inko dies in childbirth due to Izuku activating the FAO quirk during birth. Hisashi raises his rambunctious boy alone, all while feeding his son stolen quirks and avoiding an investigation into his activities. DFO. Love it.
Fun at Hero Con by wolfsrainrules- Pro hero Izuku at hero convention where he’s so busy being a fan he forgets that he’s disgustingly famous. Any fic in which Izuku goes to hero cons and gives his fans heart attacks is the best fic.
Viridescent by darkfire1220- Izuku’s dad is a well-known villain who passed onto his Izuku his very distinctive green fire quirk. All Might still chooses to pass on OFA but Izuku needs to overcome his hatred of his quirk, his father and deal with everyone else’s suspicions. AU. Some Izuku/Toga
Future’s History by Neehl- I LOVE THIS FIC. It’s a super long shot but man, everything about it is stellar. An examination of captainkirkk’s OFA is known AU where everyone knows about All Might’s ability to pass on his quirk. It centers around Izuku trying to keep under the radar then later embracing his fame as the Ninth OFA user. AU
From Muddy Waters by HLine- Another dad for one fic, Izuku and Inko are trying to hide from AFO who they know is a supervillain. Izuku gets into Yuuei by hiding his AFO quirk behind a normal strength enhancing quirk. Someone give this boy a break, he just wants to be a hero and is so stressed out. DFO. AU
Hero Class Civil Warfare by RogueDruid- man what do I even say about this fic? The hero classes are split into hero/villain teams for a 3 day exercise to test strategy and teamwork, Bakugou the hero leader and Izuku the villain leader. Our green bean turns his brain to wickedness and the heroes sure are glad they got to Midoriya before a villain claimed him. Now has a sequel Hero Class Danger Days
Do What You Will, If That’s What You Want by stanzas- After a few years of being a pro hero, Todoroki, the #5 hero, retires suddenly to follow a new path. He finds himself growing closer to Izuku who is supportive and all too adorable. Terrible description but its really, really good. Tododeku. Momojirou.
Something Borrowed by ThisCat- Izuku has the ability to borrow people’s quirks as long as he is looking at them. He rarely uses his quirk bc it frightens other people but still decides to try and be a hero, applying and getting into Yuuei and working to use his power for good. AU. Lovely idea well executed.
journey to the past by aloneintherain- do you want to cry actual tears and throw up from feels?? This is the fic for you. Izuku has been attacked by villains his entire life but was always saved by mysterious pro heroes who seemed to know a lot about him. He never understood until he reached Yuuei and saw those same heroes as teenagers. I ugly cry every time I read.
Bloom in Winter by e_va- Izuku was taken by his father at a young age used used his insightful analysis for villainy. Izuku is forced to go along with this for years until, at 14, he’s enrolled at Yuuei to be a spy. He’s always wanted to be a hero and now he’s forced to betray his idols. Save this child. AU
Curse of the anime protagonist by masterdipster- Izuku has a quirk that allows him to sense when people are danger and rush towards them, it’s perfect for hero work, if only he wanted to be a hero. Thought this was crack? psych, it’s actually really heartfelt, hilarious with some stellar writing. AU
Victim of Circumstance by Chalcet- quirkless, orphaned and homeless, Izuku lives on the bad side of town acting as a vigilante to protect his crime ridden city the heroes overlook. He begins training to be a hero to try and change the system from the inside out. This boy, is amazing. AU
i am cold, can you hear me by midoizuku- Todoroki runs across a boy at a hero fight and soon realizes he’s stumbled upon All Might’s illegitimate child. They strike up an odd friendship as Todoroki view Izuku as both a potential rival and someone who can maybe understand his situation. AU. Going towards Tododeku.
Known Variables by pockettramblr- Another OFA is known AU fic which explores Izuku gaining the legacy quirk and how having other students and teachers in the know affects his early experiences at Yuuei. AU
Cardiac Arrest by AMournfulHowlInTheNight- During the battle of Kamino Ward, AFO topples a building in his fight with All Might which crushes izuku to death. AFO grabs the boy’s body and flees leaving the heroes mourning but maybe izuku is going to experience something worse than death. DFO. AU
and while we’re waiting by Kemmasandi- and absolutely adorable one shot exploring the early and good days of Nana and Toshinori’s relationship as Toshi grows from a small stick of a boy to a giant young man with enough power and heart to save the world.
Diametrically Opposed by Golden Wooly and Murky Muse- Most likely DFO story in which Izuku wants to be a hero and thinks he can when AM gives him OFA but his over-protective father sometimes gets in the way. DFO.
The Roots the Clutch by Laquearia- Pro hero Deku tries to stay in touch with old friend Todoroki even after he moves to New York and gets married but Shouto still carries a torch for his oldest friend and first crush. SO much angst my friends, so much goddamn angst. Future AU. Tododeku.
I’ll carry the secrets, you carry by the umbrella by ArgentCross- Todoroki starts to notice there’s something weird about Izuku and his quirk and decides to investigate. Also may be realizing that he’s got feeling for his friend at the same time. Tododeku.
Subject: A Comprehensive Report by BonesofBirdWings- AU where young Izuku realizes he can’t be a hero and interns with Nighteye as a hero analyst and shows off his heroic spirit by helping solve crimes with heroes and the police. A fascinating look at Izuku’s strategic mind plus the very hands off writing style interspaced by news articles and interviews is magnificent. AU.
One Shot Wok by AMournfulHowlInTheNight- A crack AU born in the discord where future Izuku is transported back to his younger self and decides to take care of business by wrecking the LOV and other assholes with a Wok. AFO would be proud if he weren’t confused and terrified. AU. DFO.
The Long Way Around by redrobin1989- casually adding by own story cause why not? Izuku never meets All Might during the sludge monster incident but is inspired anyway to become Japan's first quirkless hero. Slow burn, lots of OCs. AU. MS. No pairings.
Hello and welcome to my blog! I’d like to introduce you to the gang!
*Disclaimer: I only follow a handful of newsies ask blogs, so if one of my characters has the same nickname as yours or any other similarities, it is merely a coincidence!
***Potential Triggers Warning! There are some death, abuse, alcoholism, racism, suicide, and attempted murder related trigger warnings in some of the backstories below***
—————– Newsie name: Chickadee Reason for name: She pretended to be a boy for the first six years because the lodging house only allowed boys to stay there. But the other newsies knew she was a girl. So, they named her Chickadee “‘cause she’s a chick.” But if anyone asked why, it was because “'he’ has a beautiful singing voice, like a bird.” Real name: Elizabeth Sanford Age: 16 Sexuality: Heterosexual Face Claim/Outfit: x Personality: fun-loving, scrappy, sarcastic, guarded, flirtatious, loyal, compassionate, will do what it takes to survive, has trust issues, and is still dealing with a great amount of grief  Hobbies: whittling, flirting, singing, and watching sunrises  Background: Her mother died in childbirth along with the baby when she was four. Her father died in an accident at the lumber mill where he worked when she was six. Her older brother Sal was all she had left. He got them both jobs as newsies so that he could keep an eye on her and so she didn’t have to work at a factory like a lot of other little orphan girls. When she was thirteen, her brother got a well-paying job and was going to move them into a small apartment and send her to school, but he caught pneumonia before he could. His death all but destroyed her. She became shut off and never let anyone help her. She never truly dealt with her grief. Shortly after his death, she left Richmond and began selling papes in other boroughs, never staying anywhere for too long. She learned how to survive on her own and convinced herself that she’s better off that way. She did, however, run into her old friends at the strike rally after not seeing them for about three years and will now occasionally visit the newsboys of Richmond.
—————–
Newsie name: Fox Reason for name: he is sly and quick-witted like a fox Real name: Finley O'Connor Age: 17 Sexuality: Bisexual Face Claim/Outfit: x Personality: confident, ambitious, sneaky, smart, determined, understanding, strategic, protective, flirty, and has issues with the concept of love   Hobbies: flirting, poker, pulling pranks, and making out. He is the leader of the newsies.  Background: When he was 7 years old, his parents and him immigrated to New York from Ireland. When he was 8 his mother was killed in a hate-crime. About a month later his grief-stricken father killed himself. When he came home from school that day, a neighbor told him what had happened and took him in for a little while. He soon thereafter found himself amongst the newsies. He was angry and confused and he hated that his father basically abandoned him. He doesn’t like the concept of love because he blames the love his father had for his mother for destroying what was left of his family. In his mind, being Irish made him motherless, but love made him an orphan.
—————–
Newsie name: Duke Reason for name: he’s always getting into fights and is always ready to duke it out Real name: Daniel Carleton  Age: 16 Sexuality: Heterosexual Face Claim/Outfit: x Personality: angry, insecure, sarcastic, always on the defensive, doesn’t know how to express himself, has a short temper, fiercely protective of those he loves Hobbies: boxing, darts, and gardening Background: He was the bastard son of a single mother who hated him. She always blamed him for her life of destitution. She verbally abused him for years and sometimes even locked him in a closet for hours when she “needed some me time” and didn’t want to deal with him. Her words always stayed with him which is way he’s always so quick to assume the worst in everybody. He eventually just had enough and ran away and became a newsie. He sometimes struggles with the guilt of leaving her to fend for herself but remembers that he had to do what was best for himself and get out.
—————–
Newsie name: James Reason for name: He doesn’t like nicknames, he prefers “the name his parents gave him” (If he would have allowed a nickname, his friends would have called him Strings) Real name: James Emerson Age: 17 Sexuality: Bisexual Face Claim/Outfit: x Personality: quiet, observant, judgmental, soft spoken, has a dry humor, thinks he’s more mature than he actually is, pretentious, bitter, actually kind of a romantic  Hobbies: playing his old, beat-up violin, composing, people watching, reciting Shakespeare   Background: He grew up in one of the richest families in Richmond and was given the best of everything. When his parents died in a boating accident when he was 14, he found out that the family’s financial adviser had been embezzling money from them for years, leaving his inheritance as practically nothing. He turned to family friends for support and comfort but once thy found out he had no money left, they turned their backs on him. Everything in his parents estate had to be sold and auctioned off to cover any remaining expenses or debts. Alone and destitute, he then joined the newsies to cover his cost of living.
—————–
Newsie name: Sniffer Reason for name: he’s “part bloodhound” and can find anything Real name: “Gabriel” (( In modern au it’s Gabriel Hernandez))  Age: 16 Sexuality: Pan-romantic asexual Face Claim/Outfit: x Personality: straightforward but not always forthcoming, he’s always honest but he doesn’t always tell you everything, he knows everything about everything, he always “knows a guy”, is a bit of a gossip, good at reading people, a realist, kind hearted but in a more subtle way, was raised Catholic but isn’t very religious anymore   Hobbies: locating and procuring rare or desired items, poker, solving puzzles and riddles, helping others Background: When he was a baby, he was abandoned at a church-run orphanage. He was raised by the nuns and given the name Gabriel. He has no idea what his real name is or if he was even given one. When he was about ten, the orphanage burned down (with no injuries) and all the children had to be sent to other orphanages throughout the city. He didn’t want to go to another one, so he left and joined the newsies. The orphanage has since been rebuilt and he still sees the nuns whenever they feed the newsies or when he comes in for weekly confession.
When his aunt got too old, she moved into an elderly retirement community. The only catch was that he was not allowed to live with her there. So, he got a job as a newsie and lives at the lodging house. He goes to visit her every Sunday afternoon.
—————–
Newsie name: Mouth Reason for name: He never shuts up Real name: Isaiah Greenwood  Age: 15 Sexuality: Questioning Face Claim/Outfit: x Personality: loud, obnoxious, eccentric, reckless, competitive, sweet, aimless and a little self conscious   Hobbies: playing marbles, playing horseshoes, playing checkers, basket weaving, and eating  Background: He grew up on a farm outside of the city with fourteen brothers and sisters. When he felt he was old enough, he moved to the city and got a job to send money back to his family, like his older siblings had before him. He goes back to visit about once a month.
—————–
So, in desperation, his father tried to rob a bank in an attempt to save her life. Unfortunately, he was caught and is currently serving 10 to 12 in the pen. The judge, however, was very merciful and took pity and allowed him a supervised visit to his wife before she died. Pockets has been in the care of the newsies ever since. He gets to visit his dad in prison every couple of months. He got caught stealing himself about four months before the strike and got sent to the Refuge. He stayed there until Governor Roosevelt shut it down and freed him. He still occasionally gets nightmares about it.
—————–
Newsie name: Poe Reason for name: he’s a writer and a poet like “that Edgar Allen Poe guy” Real name: Andrew “Andy” Reid  Age: 15 Sexuality: Heterosexual Face Claim/Outfit: x Personality: sensitive, quiet, shy, kind, very creative and quick witted, can be quite sassy, a true romantic at heart Hobbies: writing, reading, playing with every dog that walks by, sewing, and secretly dancing Background: His father died from an unknown illness when was a toddler and he was raised by his loving mother. There was nothing particularly special about his time spent there, but looking back it was some of his favorite times spent with his mother. She eventually took ill and succumbed to the illness. Him and his cousin, Richie, were sent to live with their grandfather, who died about three years later due to old age. They soon found themselves living amongst the newsies, who treated them like little brothers and are raising them as their own.
—————–
Newsie name: Gills Reason for name: he practically lives in the ocean, can hold his breath for up to four minutes, and he can drink like a fish Real name: Jonathan Evans Age: 16 Sexuality: Pansexual Face Claim/Outfit: x Personality: confident, kind, competitive, enjoys the little things in life, kind hearted, protective, thick skinned   Hobbies: swimming, jogging, fishing, poker Background: When he was fairly young, his mother walked out on his father and him. His name was Theodore and he was the sweetest thing. They dated in secret because he was a black boy in the deeply racist 19th century south. Her family owned slave lest than forty years prior, so she knew they would never approve. They kept telling themselves that nothing could happen between them because it was too dangerous, but their love for each other grew and they couldn’t stay away. So they kept their affair a secret for several months until her little sister saw her sneaking out one night and followed her. She caught her sister spying and made her swear never to tell. But the next day her little sister came to her crying and apologize profusely for accidentally telling. Dixie raced to the stables to find her father beating the crap out of Teddy and when she tried to stop him, he knocked her out with a single blow. When she came to, he was in the process of trying to hang Teddy in a nearby tree. She quickly found a shovel and knocked her father out. She helped Teddy out of the rope and stole the family horse. She rode with Teddy as far north as she could before stopping to find a doctor. She traded the horse for his services and when Teddy was almost fully recovered they hitched a ride in a wagon even further north. They then made a life with each other in a small apartment doing odd jobs. But neither one of them fully dealt with the horrors of that day and there was a great divide between them. Eventually, along with other smaller issues, they decided that they couldn’t do this anymore. As much as they tried, they couldn’t look at each other without seeing the scene replay in their heads. So they sat down and said their goodbyes. They promised that they would always love each other in some way and that they would keep in touch. Teddy moved to a small northern farming town and Dixie moved to Richmond where she became a newsie.
Former Newsies
Newsie name: Tommy Reason for name: n/a Real name: Thomas Russo Age: 22 Sexuality: Bisexual Face Claim/Outfit: x Personality: strong, confident, knows how to have a good time, knows when it’s time to be serious, funny, sweet, comforting, romantic, a proud Italian   Hobbies: poker, playing pranks, dancing, cooking Background: He never knew what happened to his mother; it had always just been his dad and him. Most days he felt like he and his father reversed roles, as he was always taking care of his alcoholic father. He became a newsie at a young age as he had to provide for the both of them, his father being unable to work. He’d sell newspapers every morning and then every afternoon he would pick his father up at the pub and attempt to get him home without a fight. He grew tired of this way of living and was almost relieved every time his father went to jail (for various crimes). Through the years he rose up in rank until he became the leader of the Richmond newsies, a feat he was justly proud of. He has had less and less contact with his father throughout the years, he much prefers to focus on his true family, the newsies. After “retiring” from selling, he moved to Manhattan and began working at a bank and fell in love with a colleague’s daughter, who he is now engaged to.
—————–
***He is not available to interact with, but I think it’s important that you get to know him because he was a big part of everyone’s lives.***
Newsie name: Ticker Reason for name: he carried around a pocket watch that ticked very loudly Real name: Sal Sanford Age: 19 at time of death Sexuality: Aromantic Asexual Face Claim/Outfit: x Personality: protective, intelligent, compassionate, valued honesty and integrity, stubborn, made terrible dad jokes, good with kids, got frustrated easily (mostly at inanimate objects that wouldn’t cooperate)  Hobbies: reading, going on walks, chess, playing with and reading to the younger kids, Background: His mother died in childbirth along with the baby when he was ten. His father died in a lumber mill accident when he was twelve. All he had left was his little sister Lizzie, who he was now responsible for. He got them both jobs as newsies so that he could keep an eye on her and so she didn’t have to work at a factory like other little orphan girls. The last thing he wanted was for her to get hurt or worse like their father did. As they grew up, he strived to give her the most normal childhood that he could. He was both parent and teacher to her as well as brother. He adored her and would do anything to make sure she was strong, healthy, and happy. When he was 19, he got a well-paying job and was going to get them a small apartment and would finally be able to send her to school. Knowing that there was a better life ahead of them, he had been the happiest he had been in a long time. His dreams for the future were dashed, however, when he caught pneumonia and died surrounded by his loved ones.
Bookshelf Briefs 8/14/17
The not-so-brief edition!
Akuma no Riddle, Vol. 5 | By Yun Kouga and Sunao Minakata | Seven Seas – How much you enjoy this final volume of Akuma no Riddle may depend on how much you enjoy stories having a happy ending even if they have to pull the logic out of their asses somewhat. The anime finished long before this, but the beats are essentially the same, as is the result. That said, the manga is definitely making things a bit more “yuri,” and since that is the main audience for this series, I imagine fans will appreciate that if nothing else. Also, we have some really hot women in suits on the cover, and that’s worth the price of the book in and of itself. In the end, this is the lesser of the two “assassination classroom” titles, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it—I had a lot of fun.  Sean Gaffney
Assassination Classroom, Vol. 17 | By Yusei Matsui | Viz Media – The first two-thirds of this is fantastic, as we see the class square off against each other to decide whether they will try to continue to kill Koro-sensei, or work on saving him. While lots of people get to show off their previously unseen chops, we’re all here for Nagisa and Karma, and we are not disappointed. There’s some backstory that mostly amounts to “we were good friends but grew apart,” but they also represent two very different kinds of assassins. As you may have guessed, Nagisa wins the day. The last third of the manga is a bit ridiculous, or as ridiculous as you can get in this essentially ridiculous series, but I’m prepared to shrug my shoulders and hum “Pigs in Space” while we power through it. Top-flight shonen. – Sean Gaffney
Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma, Vol. 19 | By Yuto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki | VIZ Media – Central continues its “mop-up” campaign against Totsuki’s various research societies, and the volume begins with the last one of the day, during which Ryo Kurokiba manages to provide the only win out of 33 challenges for our heroes. That battle is interesting, as always, though there seems to be a bit more fanservice than usual, but what’s really fascinating is the cliffhanger ending. After unwittingly helping in a Central-style lesson by serving as sous chef for Eishi Tsukasa (current first seat of the Council of Ten), Soma ends up impressing him so much that Eishi invites him to join Central. Of course that doesn’t go well, and the volume concludes with the challenge: if Yukihira loses, he has to join Central as Eishi’s right-hand man, but if he wins, he gets first seat. Either way, it’s quite a big deal! – Michelle Smith
In/Spectre, Vol. 5 | By Kyo Shirodaira and Chashiba Katase | Kodansha Comics – This is based off of a novel, and I’d be very interested to see what it was originally like. The manga does a very good job of managing to keep things interesting given that this is nothing but talk, talk talk the entire way through. The way this is done is by dramatizing the events that Kotoko is theorizing about as if they are happening (which leads to one of the few moments of humor in the book when Kotoko sets up Saki as the prime suspect) interspersed with Kuro fighting Steel Lady Nanase in the background, which is a well-choreographed if somewhat tedious fight—by its very nature it’s going to last the whole book. The next volume is the final one—will our trio pull it off? – Sean Gaffney
Kaze Hikaru, Vol. 25 | By Taeko Watanabe | VIZ Media – Every year, I am so happy when a new volume of Kaze Hikaru comes out and every year I get so annoyed with its main character. It’s to the point now where the series would genuinely be improved by her sudden demise. But yet, I do so love the deep feelings of love and loyalty between Hijikata, Okita, and Kondo, and those are enough to overlook Sei’s foolishness. She’s once again getting all bent-out-of-shape over bushi discipline which, again, she should’ve known to expect when she joined the troop. But she just can’t help making an undignified scene trying to spare an accountant guy his fate when money goes missing. At least in the end, she sees that Hijikata is not actually cruel, the accountant shouldn’t have been a bushi either, and the real culprit was a creep. If only it’d stick and she’d mature some. Oh well. I’ll still be eager next year, I’m sure. – Michelle Smith
Maid-sama!, Vols. 17-18 | By Hiro Fujiwara | Viz Media – As is appropriate for a two-volume omnibus, this is definitely divided into two halves. The first one shows us Misaki coming to Usui’s rescue, and it’s as ridiculous as you might have expected, complete with her trying to jump off a great height because she knows he would easily do it. (She sustains light injuries herself.) The second half shows us that after all this time the true antagonist is still Misaki herself, and her need to be respected warring with the fact that she works in a maid cafe. Once she gets over this and is able to tell everyone how proud she is to do that, there’s nowhere else for the series to go, so it ends with a wedding, albeit ten years in the future. Far more variable than expected, but overall I enjoyed it. – Sean Gaffney
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, Vol. 4 | By coolkyousinnjya | Seven Seas – And this is where my enjoyment of the lead character and vague yuri is completely overshadowed by my dislike of stupid fanservice and annoying villains needing to be redeemed. Ilulu proved to be even more annoying than her introduction at the end of the last volume suggested, and I also groaned and slapped my head at the ‘let’s give Kobayashi a penis’ chapter. At times the series can still be intriguing, such as the chapter showing us how Kobayashi met Tohru on that drunken night, or the occasional depth Kobayashi receives. But it’s just not worth trawling through endless pages of ridiculous breasts and screaming lolis to get to it. Sorry, but this is the end for me. – Sean Gaffney
My Hero Academia, Vol. 9 | By Kohei Horikoshi | Viz Media – Over the past few months, it’s become clear that we have a new contender to take over the “Big Three” position now that both Naruto and Bleach have ended, and that contender is My Hero Academia, which has gotten staggeringly popular. And with good reason, as reading this volume shows us the author at the top of his game, with several villains infiltrating our heroes’ training camp and attempting to abscond with Bakugo. Things get very rough for a while, mostly as, being heroes, the kids need permission to fight back with all their strength. But once they do, great things happen, particularly with Midoriya, who remains the star of this ensemble. If you haven’t read this series yet, please start now. – Sean Gaffney
Nisekoi: False Love, Vol. 22 | By Naoshi Komi | Viz Media – As expected, Marika is written out, though in the end she’s not killed off OR married off—she’s sent to Pittsburgh, the only place that can cure the unnamed Love Story Disease she seems to have. But not before we get a thrilling rescue attempt with lots of wild fighting and far more helicopters than you’d really expect. Meanwhile, in terms of the only two girls who matter (sorry, Tsumugi), Onodera is still not QUITE ready to confess, but is trying to warm Raku up to it. I doubt that will go well. And Chitoge and Raku have another disaster of a date where she keeps completely misreading what he wants, which isn’t helped by his not really knowing. We’ve got three more volumes after this, so SOMEONE needs to get a clue soon. – Sean Gaffney
Scum’s Wish, Vol. 4 | By Mengo Yokoyari | Yen Press – We’re just about midway through this series, and I’m starting to wonder if it’s going to turn dark and tragic. Hanabi is travelling down a spiral that I’m not sure she’s able to control, and Minagawa is not helping there at all. Probably the most intriguing moment in the manga comes when Minagawa is bored out of her gourd on a date with Kanai… till he accidentally calls her Hana-chan, and it’s as if all of a sudden it matters to her. One thing that the author excels at is showing us the tempestuous fire of desire and sexual heat without ever, ever having it connect into anything resembling love. It’s so sordid, and again, I wonder how long things can go without someone snapping and a murder or suicide occurring. Addicting. – Sean Gaffney
UQ Holder, Vol. 11 | By Ken Akamatsu | Kodansha Comics – There’s a lot of stuff happening in this book. Yukihime rejects Touta as she still loves Negi, we find out Negi was possessed by the big bad from Negima! and has been suffering the last 20 years, Fate and Eva are trying to save and kill him respectively, both thinking they carry out his true wishes, and finally far more of the Negima! cast are still around than we’d previously thought—indeed, Zazie’s even turned into a shipper. But no, at the end of the day this is the volume that tells us that Karin was actually Judas Iscariot, her immortality a result of betraying Christ, who Touta, seeing Karin suffering because of that, offers to punch in the face the next time he sees Him. I… don’t know where to begin. What the what? – Sean Gaffney
