RDR Event Timeline (Canon + Headcanon)

This is the timeline I have constructed and use for all of my Red Dead writings. Canon event dates/ages are taken from the Red Dead Wiki, and headcanon estimations for more ambiguous events/characters are based on their approximate ages in-game by 1899 and what makes the most logical sense to me based on that timeline.

1885 - John Marston and Susan Grimshaw join the gang (Canon); Charles Smith leaves home, aged 13 (HC) (based on est. DOB 1872)

1886 - Arthur proposes to and subsequently breaks up with Mary in the springtime; Arthur meets Eliza (19) later in the year, and Isaac is conceived (HC)

1887 - Lee & Hoyt Bank Robbery, April (Canon); Isaac Morgan born (HC) (According to Arthur in-game, Eliza only knew who he was after she got pregnant. Based on this they most likely met in late 1886 or very early 1887, with the bank robbery in April '87 and Isaac born that autumn.)

1888 - Death of Bessie Matthews (HC) (based on the assumption that she passed some time before Arthur lost his son. Her cause of death is never specified in canon, but I HC it was a fairly quick battle with pneumonia over the winter.)

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu- carmilla (the lesbian vampire story that predated bram stoker's dracula by 26 YEARS CARMILLA SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRST, he could show up with a possible cure to the vampire curse in the current arc?, maybe he or carmilla was even the one to bite and turn stoker)

Lewis Carrol- wrote alice's adventures in wonderland

Mar'i Grayson Titans

I always wondered who the Titans of Mar'i's generation would be (if DC would stop killing off Titans kids). Her generation takes place a few years after Damian's, after he becomes the next Batman. It also happens during Batman Beyond.

The members are:

Mar'i Grayson | Nightstar

Lian Harper | Red Riding Hood

Irey West | Kid Flash

Robert Long | Darkstar

Ceridian | Aqualad

Steven Logan-Stone | Animorph

Cade Wilson | Blackbird

Rhea Beecher-Duncan | Papillon

Corazon Reyes | Pixie

Augustina Thomas | Sunbeam

At first, the team was just Nightstar, Red Riding Hood, Darkstar, Ceridian, and Kid Flash but their members increased over time.

Team breakdown

Mar'i Grayson | Nightstar: Self explanatory. Being the daughter of Nightwing, the original Titans leader, and Starfire, Mar'i is taking up a mantle passed down from Dick. She has her mother's Tamaranean abilities.

Lian Harper | Red Riding Hood: Lian is the daughter of Arsenal and Cheshire. After leaving her previous team the Strays behind, she has joined forces with Nightstar and the other children of the original Titans to form the next Titans team. Like her father Arsenal, Lian is a skilled archer.

Irey West | Kid Flash: Iris "Irey" West II is the daughter of the previous Kid Flash and Linda Park. She inherited the speedster gene and has access to the Speed Force. She's one of the original Titans.

Robert Long | Darkstar: The son of Troia. Robert was raised by his mother and never knew his father. His Amazon powers manifested fairly early, and he was trained as one by his mother. Once he became of age, he was his mother's Wonderboy. He then retired the Wonderboy mantle and went on to join the Titans, taking the name Darkstar.

Corazon Reyes | Pixie: Daughter of Blue Beetle and Faerie. Corazon inherited her mother's Metahuman powers. She joined the Titans after Robert reached out to her. She seems to have a crush on him, but doesn't know if he returns her feelings (spoiler: he does but is shy).

Steven Logan-Stone | Animorph: Middle child and only son of Beast Boy & Cyborg. Steve was originally a lone wolf until him and Mar'i crossed paths again after so long. He has the power to transform into robotic versions of animals.

Cade Wilson | Blackbird: Eldest child and son of Ravager and Raven. They actually wanted to join the new Titans when they first formed, but Rose felt like their powers weren't ready and that they needed some more training. Now that Cade has full control of their powers, they're a member and one of the most powerful ones.

Cade has a lot of Raven's powers including her magical abilities.

Augustina Thomas | Sunbeam: Daughter of the Signal and Fatale. Unlike her brother Blackout, Augustina chose to join the Titans since her and Wade Yates, the new leader of the Watchers, don't really get along. She inherited the light half of Duke's Metahuman powers.

Ceridian | Aqualad: Son of Tempest and Dolphin. He is the prince of Cerdia and next in line for the throne after his father. Ceridian joined the Titans to further establish peaceful relations with his nation and the surface world. He has the same Atlantean powers as his parents do.

Rhea Beecher-Duncan | Papillon: Daughter of Bumblebee and Vox/Herald/Guardian. Her and Steven are good friends so when he joined the team, she also joined so he wouldn't feel like the lonely new guy. Rhea has a supersuit that allows her to reduce her size, fly, and use the scales for various offensive and defensive purposes.

It was over four months ago that I first asked myself, "Where does the phrase 'loop-the-loop' come from?" My initial googling at the time revealed nothing more than a few early 20th century roller coasters. Finally, after months of constantly thinking about it, I convinced myself to dig a little deeper, and I was, frankly, a little let down... At first.

The predecessor to the modern roller coaster, referred to as "Russian mountains," originated in Russia in the early 17th century. They were little more than hills of ice and wood which sleds were pushed down, but they were the spark to a fire which has burned for hundreds of years. Eventually, the Russian nobility and royalty caught wind of these exhilarating machinations, and they began to spread across the continent. Constructors started using wooden and metal carts on wheels to overcome potential safety issues, as well as to account for generally higher temperatures in Western Europe.

Eventually, the craze over coasters began to die down. That is, until the centrifugal railway was created. The first of these proto-loops was implemented in Britain in the 1840s, and they immediately took off. Centrifugal Railways relied almost entirely on centrifugal force to keep the rider in their seat, similar to the modern day loop, although our beloved loop's 19th century ancestor notably took the shape of a perfect circle, putting much more force on the rider, which often caused strain and potential whiplash. The knowledge of this, however, did not dissuade excited Europeans, as many flocked to these new attractions. However, even this excitement died down eventually.

... Until the early 20th century, when the loop was brought to America. It's unclear where exactly the first North American loop was constructed, but it's generally believed that Lina Beecher's Flip Flap Railway on Coney Island was the first of note. Flip Flap Railway, however, suffered from many similar issues to its European counterparts, namely the intense 12 G's it could subject its riders to. Due to its general unpleasantness, Flip Flap was shut down in 1902. It was spiritually succeeded by Loop the Loop, also on Coney Island.

This brings us right back to the beginning. Where does the phrase "loop the loop" come from? Disappointingly, the earliest use I can find for those tantalizing three words are in reference to the Coney Island coaster and the numerous similarly named coasters across the U.S. Additionally, I was unable to find any reasoning on why this name was chosen for the coasters. Obviously the phrase probably refers to the fact that you are looping a loop, but that still gives little insight into the history of the phrase.

While I may never know the origins of the phrase "loop the loop," I do now know that bumper cars were originally called "Dodgem Cars," as bumping was not the intended purpose. Or that the patent for roller coasters in the U.S. registry still reads as "Pleasure Railway," as many coasters were originally utilized largely for sightseeing and had relatively low speeds. Or that horse riders in the Byzantine Middle East would practice both their horsemanship and reflexes by riding in a large circle and tossing balls to one another. This exercise eventually spread to mainland Europe, where it was given the name "carosella" in Italian, or "little battle."

Regardless of my original goal, I have found this an incredibly interesting topic to research. I know more about roller coasters, an old love of mine, than I ever have before. Most of the information I've written here comes from Robert Cartmell's The Incredible Scream Machine: A History of the Roller Coaster, which I'd definitely recommend checking out if that interests you.
