I received some prickly pear jelly as a gift from their trip to Arizona, I guess they heard me gush about how much I love it (it's the closest to saguaro fruit I'll ever get plus it's delicious!) It's 100% better than the one I get from Amazon! It's so good and has more of that prickly pear taste, it's a shame it's in such a small bottle and that it'll be a while before I get my hands on more authentic jelly. Anyways, I wanted to share because I love this stuff, and it pleases the Lesser long-nosed bat in me :]

Sonoran Family Picture - May 2023 If all the cacti, brush, and trees of the Sonoran desert wanted to take a family picture, it would be this. There are saguaro, organ pipe, and chain fruit cholla cacti. The brush includes creosote bush and brittlebush. In the middle of it all is a palo verde tree. And in the background are the Ajo Mountains. Sometimes nature creates all of the composition of your images for you. MWM

Spectember/Spectober 2023 #09: Things With Wings
(Apologies for the abrupt absence – I'm okay, just having everything break down at once. This is fine.)
So— back to the speculative evolution request list!
@thebigdeepcheatsy requested a "cactus-dwelling/germinating evolution of introduced rosy-faced lovebirds":
Tumblr media
While Agapornis cheatsyi is still quite physically similar to its introduced ancestors, this lovebird has developed a close symbiotic relationship with the cactus Carnegiea ornipolis, a descendant of the modern saguaro.
Naturally fasciated, this cactus grows a splaying fan-like crown which the lovebirds excavate their shallow nest burrows into. Feeding on the cactus' fruit in early summer, the lovebirds then disperse the seeds via their droppings – a process that significantly improves propagation chances, both due to the birds commonly foraging and defecating around suitable nurse plants and the passage through their gut speeding up germination.
———
Someone calling themself "LB" asked for some "flying afrotherians":
Tumblr media
Elbeitandraka venenifer is a descendant of tree-climbing Malagasy tenrecs that developed gliding membranes – and its lineage is now just about achieving true powered flight.
About 25cm long (~10"), its proportionally short broad wings require it to fly very fast to generate enough lift for its weight. It mostly only actively flies when traveling between roosts and feeding sites (or when escaping from threats), alternating between gliding to save energy and flapping to recover altitude.
It's an opportunistic omnivore, crawling around in the tree canopy foraging for vegetation, fruits, fungi, invertebrates, and the occasional smaller vertebrate, using its flexible sengi-like nose to probe around in crevices.
Much like modern common tenrecs it's capable of hibernating for months at a time through periods of scarce food availability. It also accumulates alkaloid toxins in its body from its arthropod prey, advertising its unpalatability to predators with bold contrasting warning coloration on its wing membranes.
———
And here's a combination of a couple of anonymous requests for both "flying heterodontosaurs" and "dragons with hind leg wings, a la sharovipteryx":
Tumblr media
Inversodraco rapax is a highly specialized Jurassic descendant of heterodontosaurids that took to climbing and gliding, developing delta-wing-like membranes on their hindlimbs convergently similar to those of the earlier sharovipterygids.
Around 75cm long (~2'6"), it has unusually flexible hip joints for a dinosaur, able to splay its legs out to the sides to deploy wings supported by an elongated outer toe on each foot. Its arms form small forewings for stability, and its long tail ends in a vane of stiffened feathers that aid in steering.
Unlike its herbivorous-to-omnivorous ancestors it's primarily a carnivore, swooping down onto small prey and grabbing it with its talon-like forelimbs.

BOTD: White-winged Dove
Tumblr media
Photo: Doug Greenberg
"Related to the Mourning Dove, but a larger and bulkier bird, the White-wing is mainly a summer resident in the southwestern states. It is abundant in some regions, and streamside groves or desert washes may echo with the crowing calls of males on spring mornings. In some desert areas, this dove often feeds on the fruits of cactus, and visits their flowers for nectar; it is an important pollinator of the giant saguaro cactus."

oc interview: ✨✨vance✨✨
thank you to @swearingcactus AND @glitchinginthegarden AND!! @v-eats-bugs for tagging me !! finally got to sit down and answer this :3
let's hit it !
Tumblr media
🧡 Name?
"Just call me V."
his first chosen name was penn, but he started going by vance after his medical transition. he doesn't give it out freely bc that was the name arasaka knew him by; he doesn't mention his surname, either, bc it's a pretty prominent one with much of its members still working for the megacorp in question.
🧡 Nickname?
"...Well, last I checked, 's still V."
apart from "mano" from jackie, vance doesn't have much in terms of nicknames. his old netrunning handle was N3tH0und (net hound); it's a retired username that's been largely scrubbed from the net, but sometimes he signs his major hacks with it just to fuck with people. it's a ghost's name, and it's fun to haunt the net only when he knows for certain that it can't be traced back to him.
🧡 Gender?
"Guy! Never been asked that outright before."
🧡 Star sign?
"'s not my scene--can't say I know much about it--but Misty's got me down as a Cancer, whatever that means. Says that's probably why I'm, er, so 'intuitive', as she called it. You ask me, that's just the merc work--bein' able to read a room, that is."
i first drew vance on july 7, 2023, so i consider that his birthday. like vance, i have no idea how being a cancer applies to him, but google says cancers are loyal, domestically inclined, and committed to their loved ones, so that sounds about right!
🧡 Height?
"Six flat. Johnny's pretty sure I'm taller than 'im...but he's slouchin' all the time, so don't think he's got a say in it."
🧡 Orientation?
"Usually go for other guys. But I guess the definition of that is pretty loose these days, 'specially in NC, huh. The hell does it matter to me if you've got certain...parts. If you're a guy, you're a guy, and if you're down, I'm down, y'know?"
vance is a gay man with a preference for masculine-identifying individuals. like he said, if you identify as a "guy" in any form, then that's good enough for him. he's not one to talk about having "appropriate" parts, and he thinks it's dumb that they're gendered in the first place. he's not usually looking for anything serious and he's more than okay with just being an input and having one as well.
🧡 Nationality/ethnicity?
"Nay's Indian. Tay's Filipino. Ya ask anyone, I look more like my mom."
nanay and tatay are the filipino words for mother and father, respectively. vance has a very limited grasp of either language but he at least knows that much from his dad's mother tongue.
🧡 Favorite fruit?
"Oh, man, 's been a while--this one time when I was growin' up, think I was ten or eleven, 'Saka sent Dad a basket of 'ganic fruit. For his 50 years o' service, I think it was. Anyway, had my first apple then. What I wouldn't fuckin' give for one right now."
he likes fuji apples the best :3
🧡 Favorite season?
"Gotta be winter. I got to go a lot of places back in '65--Europe, mostly--an' most of them were snowy. Loved seein' my breath fog up. You don't get that here. You get hot rains and the pavement steamin'--guess it's pretty, in its way, with all the city's neon shinin' through the rain.
"But it ain't a real winter without snow."
🧡 Favorite flower?
"If ya hike it out to the Badlands in the summer, you'll find these little white flowers blooming on the cacti; Net says they're called Saguaro blooms. I like their...tenacity, I 'spose."
Tumblr media
"But if I had to give ya a traditional answer...blue hydrangeas. Maya--she used to grow 'em in her apartment, still don't know how she did it--she gave me some blooms for my birthday back in '70. A welcome home kinda thing. Don't got her green thumb, so they died a week later...but they were real pretty. Somethin' to look forward to comin' home to."
🧡 Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?
"Coffee--can't say it works for me, though."
he likes all three and refuses to drink his coffee black. he will put so much milk and creamer in that cup that it might as well be a dessert. johnny is disgusted (affectionate).
🧡 Average hours of sleep?
"...Hours, plural?"
vance is a champ at power naps and between the relic and an insomnia left over from his arasaka days, he doesn't get to bed much. if you do somehow get him into bed by morning, however, be prepared to not see him until near-evening the next day.
🧡 Dog or cat person?
Tumblr media
note: those 10,000 photos are just the ones he has on his phone; do not look at the cloud where his kiroshi photos are stored.
🧡 Dream trip?
"...Was actually, erm, thinkin' of--well, when we get all this shit sorted out--I was thinkin'...might bring Johnny somewhere colder. Somewhere with snow. Said he hasn't seen snow before, so, I-unno, thought he might like it out there."
please take this time to imagine johnny in his android body nuzzled up to vance in the snow, red-faced and, for the first time in a long time, in awe. they're going to have hot chocolate later in some cabin vance rented out for the season--but right now, they're watching their shared breath cloud together in the air, simpatico even in this.
🧡 Favorite fictional character?
"Oh, oh--there's this real old holovid I used to loop when I was fifteen. 's fucked how they got most of it right. Anyhow, Rick Deckard. I used to think he was so damn cool."
deckard, with his big-collared jacket and general gruffness, was definitely one of vance's transition goals. that, and he watched br2049 right after--with how deckard was treating K, vance started projecting Really Fucking Heavily on K. like wow! you're a total killing machine with a father who just might love you. that's crazay man. could not be me
🧡 Number of blankets you sleep with?
"Run pretty warm as it is already, so just the one. Like the...texture of it, as it were. The weight o' it."
get this man a weighted blanket please god. i think it would fix him. alternatively, just lay on top of him and he'll be happy.
🧡 Random fact?
"I used to klep a lotta shit when I was a kid. Wires, chips, motherboards--mostly tech, really, from the vendin' machines and bus stops 'round the city. Sold 'em for a pretty eddie down in Heywood; got no buyers in the Hill, not when we could all afford the tech those Heywood kids were tryin' to kitbash together in the first place. Don't really know why I did it.
"To strike out, maybe? Maybe I liked the challenge. There's somethin' about makin' a machine give its own parts to you; get a vending machine to dispense its motherboard, a bus stop sign its LED, and ya feel like ya can make anythin' bend to your will."
--
thank you again for the tags!! this was a lot of fun to do :3
tagging @netripper , @knuckle-cluster, @matapang-coffee, and
@nakitengoku AND whoever else would like to do this! no pressure to do so ofc!!

Lesser Long-nose Bat (Leptonycteris yerbabuena)
With tongues as long as their bodies, these pollinators are able to sip on the nectar of cacti and agave flowers.
These desert nectar-feeding bats are true heroes in maintaining fragile desert ecosystems in the southwestern United States and Mexico. They are the primary night pollinators of both the organ pipe and saguaro cactus. In turn, growing up to 50 feet in height, the cacti provide important nesting and perching sites for a variety of birds, such as red-tailed hawks, elf owls, Gila woodpeckers, and gilded flickers.
The National Park Service promotes bat conservation through research, educational projects, and working with multiple private, non-profit, and federal and state agency partners.
Next time you see beautiful saguaro blooms or fruit this summer, make sure to thank a bat!

Random teacher headcanons of mine that I’ll probably never reference again:
Clavell gardens. He has the sun hat and everything, and is pretty proud of the flowers he grows! He’s looking into raising some easier fruits and vegetables too
Tyme could deadlift any of the other teachers and throw them across the room. She looks so strong and she is (she’s a former Rock Type gym leader after all)
When Jacq laughs too hard he snorts. The students take advantage of this fact often
Raifort baby talks her Pokémon/Pokémon in general, but never in front of people. Did you see her cooing in a baby voice? No you didn’t
Salvatore knows nearly every dance known to man, and happily twirls around whatever student begs him to. He’s thinking of starting a dance club or class to teach students
Dendra snores like a freight train. And is fond of naps
Saguaro sadly sucks at baking, so he can’t satisfy is own sweet tooth. On top of that, he prefers home baked sweets to stuff you buy in a store, so he is always suffering
Hassel has a video of Brassius drunkenly singing “Bring Me to Life” on his phone
Miriam has the best poker face out of all the staff members, and often wins at any games that they play together
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

SV nickname scheme headcanons
I’m a sucker for team nicknames that fit a theme so I’ve been thinking abt the ones the SV characters might use!
Nemona: Fruits in Spanish (Níspero the Pawmot, Tamarindo the Dudunsparce)
Arven: Food (Rockefeller the Cloyster, Guindilla the Scovillain)
Penny: Anime references (Luna the Umbreon, Mewmew the Sylveon) though she’s a little embarrassed about it and often uses alternative names when strangers are around
Rika: Breakfast Foods (Benny the Donphan, Pancake the Clodsire)
Poppy: short generic names a four year old would give (Princess the Tinkaton, Sparkles the Copperajah)
Larry: Excel Commands (COUNTIF the Flamigo, ACCRINT the Staraptor)
Hassel: Mythical Dragons (Fafnir the Haxorus, Druk the Baxcalibur). His Flapple (an engagement-esque present from Brassius) is named Puff tho. Cutie dragon!!
Geeta: Gemstones in Spanish (Esmeraldo the Gogoat, Zafiro the Glimmora). In private though, she calls her Glimmora चम चम (cham cham)
Giacomo: Classical composers (Monteverdi the Honchkrow, Beethoven the Mabosstiff)
Mela: They’re academy Pokemon, so she didn’t name them! She does have cute nicknames for them (Archee for Arcanine, Lolo for Charlos)— though you’ll never hear her using these cute names in public
Atticus: Samurai (Kojiro the Skuntank, Masamune the Revaroom)
Ortega: Fashion designs (Dior the Azumarill, Coco the Daschbun)
Eri: Lucha Libre moves (Plancha the Lucario, Huracán the Annihilape)
Katy: French Pastries (Madeleine the Spidops, Charlotte the Ursaring)
Brassius: Famous sculptures (David the Sudowoodo, Venus the Arboliva)
Iono: She lets her highest paying subs pick the names of her Pokémon so they’re all random
Kofu: Edible Seaweed (Nori the Crabominable, Wakame the Veluza)
Ryme: Stage names! (DJ Hellraiser the Houndstone, D3AD-END the Toxtrixity)
Tulip: Princesses (Cleo the Florges, Anastasia the Espathra)
Grusha: Clouds (Cumulus the Cetitan, Nimbus the Altaria)
Clavell: Classical Literature (Dante the Houndoom, Darcy the Oranguru)
Raifort: Historial Spanish Houses (Savoy the Zoroark, Trastámara the Gengar)
Jacq: Biological Root Words (Soma the Swalot, Telet the Firigiraf)
Tyme: Numerical prefixes (Deca and Deci the Lycanrocs)
Saguaro: Pet names! (Honey the Pachirisu and Sweetie the Hatterene)
Salvatore: Hello in different languages (Merhaba the Persian, Annyeong the Raichu)
Dendra: Punches (Haymaker the Hariyama, Bolo the Medicham)
Miriam: Combining her Pokémon’s species with a common medicine (Priligurchin the Pinchurchin, Toxapexapro the Toxapex)

Some from Sunday, cholla-centric edition.
Waiting for a bird.
The desert is bone dry this time of year, and even though we haven't yet hit long streaks of days in the 100-plus range, resources as stressed. The wind feels like a hair dryer and wise men seek shade. I wore the biggest hat I currently own, long sleeves, long pants, sunblock, and yes, I mostly huddled in the shade. Less an indication of wisdom than experience.
I mostly stuck close to the area where I'd found that giant bird's nest a while back, hoping the occupant might swing by around sunset. The tenant of that sofa-sized nest never showed but in the changing of the light, many other things invited a closer look. And a little while to listen to the wind and the occasional bird (and absolutely nothing else), and to feel that deep heat from a shady spot.

Where The Heart Is (2) (3) by photocles
Via Flickr:
(1) Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, southwestern Arizona. (2) A typical vista from the Tonto National Forest in Arizona. This elevation marks the transition from Sonoran Desert (indicated by the presence of saguaros and palo verdes) to the higher desert which has more agaves, cholla species, and shrubs like manzanita. The electrical lines off in the distance carry power generated by the Roosevelt Dam to eastern Arizona. (3) A curve-billed thrasher (Toxostoma curvirostre) working the top of a fruited-out barrel cactus.
